Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I complained about my apathetic feelings toward voting in this election. It was an unusual feeling for me, since—despite all the efforts to change this point of view—politics are a hard news journalist’s idea of sport. But there wasn’t a single race or question that I could get heatedly behind— Question 3 came closest—and there were far too many races where there was either only one candidate listed or the candidates were mirror reflections of banality: “You want chocolate or vanilla?”

I seriously considered not voting in this election. It would be the first one I missed in my 30 years in Nevada.

Well, it’s Election Day as I type this. I voted, but I’m not even wearing the little sticker.

It’s waiting in my car for some ironic purpose—too late to sneak it onto the Emancipation Proclamation.

This election, I voted with a strategy. I’ve long disliked that canard, “If you don’t vote, you don’t have the right to complain.” My feeling is not voting is as strident speech as protesting the results of an election. I don’t give up one right by not exercising the other. And anyway, those races where there is only one candidate aren’t voting anyway; they’re just signing onto the Big Brother ticket. All that means is some judges got together and decided who gets to sit on the bench this time.

It boggles my mind to think that I’m supposed to believe there’s no collusion in all those races in which there’s only one candidate.

So my strategy this time was not to vote in races in which I was offered only one choice, and I didn’t like the one choice I was offered. I also didn’t vote in races where there were two bad choices. (The voting machine’s programming really doesn’t like it when you refuse to pretend to make a choice.) Finally, in two instances in the state constitutional races, I voted, “None of these candidates.”

I’ve got to be honest. I felt better walking out of the polling station than I have in years.

Re “The market goes up in vapor” (Let Freedom Ring, Oct. 16): What the author says is incorrect.

Thalidomide has not been cleansed of the terrible side effects, it can and does still cause severe birth defects in children if their pregnant mothers take it at the wrong time. Please correct this error. There is a whole new community of young thalidomide babies who’ve been born in Brazil because the mothers and fathers are illiterate and can’t read the instructions.

Empire battle I Re “Age of Empire” (Feature story, Oct. 9): Jake Highton’s rambling article is not only poorly written, it is an incredibly ignorant piece of revisionist history.

His gross generalizations, myopic view of history and just plain nasty perspective of American and world events strain all credibility. Any event, person or country even tangentially associated with America is evil, motivated by evil and guilty of war crimes, while nations instigating conflict and ruled by despots are justified in offhand asides.

More troubling is that such a piece of inaccurate propaganda is prominently featured in your paper. Who vets your articles and performs your fact checking, Vladimir Putin?

Disinformation formation Re “The market goes up in vapor” (Let Freedom Ring, Oct. 16): One wonders what Brendan Trainor was smoking when he penned his rant on the public health merits of e-cigarettes and purported threats to civil liberties posed by smoking bans. Let’s start with his claim that the “rationale for banning second-hand tobacco smoke is largely based on politicized junk science.” In fact, the public health impact of second-hand smoke has been settled science for close to three decades, including multiple reports from the U.S. Surgeon General documenting a wide range of disease and disability, such as lung cancer and heart disease, caused by involuntary exposure to second-hand smoke among non-smokers. As for the harmreduction potential of vaping, if there is a public health benefit to e-cigarettes, then certainly those products can withstand the scientific scrutiny required any device or food making medical claims under the purview of the Food and Drug Administration. The science on e-cigarettes, to put it mildly, is anything but settled. It is worth noting that the three tobacco giants—Altria, Reynolds and Lorillard—now control a majority of the market share in the e-cig business. Among other things, if big tobacco had the public’s health in mind, it would immediately stop making the world’s deadliest consumer product.

It appears that even if you remove the addictive chemicals, a sizable group just get off on blowing stench in the direction of other people. I have always suspected this to be the case, but now vaping has provided conclusive proof.

I generally agree with many of the libertarian principles espoused by Mr. Trainor, however on this subject he has forgotten that one person’s right to do something does not negate the rights of their fellow citizens.

Let’s say that a woman decides that spraying Lysol disinfectant provided her with a lot of pleasure, and she liked the smell. If this person sat across from Mr. Trainor in a restaurant and she blasted him with Lysol every time he vaped, even he would eventually get the point. He might say, “Lady, stop, I am eating here!”

She could then use the standard vape logic, and reply, “But I like the smell and spraying Lysol relaxes me.”

It does not matter if vaping is safe or not. It stinks and in our community, no citizen has the right to stink up the shared air. Vaping has been quickly banned in stadiums, shopping areas and most public spaces, not because your fellow citizens are worried about your health, but because you stink.

Seems that the screamers for change want instantaneous law enforcement changes, but totally ignore the needed changes in civilian populaces’ out of control conduct. For the most part, states and municipalities have in place policies and personnel for handling officer conduct problems. It seems there is only the police officers that are doing anything to correct civilian law and order problems, definitely not in churches, home or schools.

There is no epidemic of police violence when you consider on a whole the wanton damage civilians have caused to neighborhoods and the families within those neighborhoods. There are more black on black and Latino on Latino deaths in our major cities that go unanswered— primarily due to civilian refusal to get involved—than questionable police violence. Civilian review boards do nothing to combat the threats to law enforcement officers, which are real and deadly. Only an educated, ethical and moral populace will solve the problems facing law enforcement officers and society, and this starts in the home and rearing of our children, to promote and respect law and order.

Unlawful conduct seems to be the norm for a large segment of the minority population. More than likely, considering the situation and facts, a civilian review board would have had very little to no effectiveness in preventing Mr. Brown’s shooting death or the wanton destruction of property and loss of lives following the shooting of Mr. Brown.

Based on world history, I do not expect a change in attitudes toward law enforcement officers from the ethnic, religious or minority populations, but continued civil unrest.

The thugs and uneducated should not rule our lives. By the way, I believe that Mr. Brown was a thug and bully. I do not believe he should have been killed, but surely he should have been physically weathered into submission by whatever non-lethal methods were available at the time that would not expose the officer to physical harm.

Racist police violence is citizens’ fault Re “Eyes wide open” (Feature story, Oct. 16): Let’s remember that law enforcement officers possess the same human frailties that all “civilians” possess, but must keep theirs under check 24 hours a day, and in some of the most mentalitystressing situations imaginable.

Civilian police oversight personnel are, as your article clearly points out, personal agenda-driven to the extent they are ineffectual, for the most part. Wouldn’t it be better that they apply their ideologies and intellect to oversight and correction of deleterious Afro and Latino American conduct toward lawful police conduct?

Get out of the way The First Amendment has been taking a beating in Nevada during this year’s political campaign.

In June, Nevada Judge Patrick Flanagan issued an order at the request of candidate Ben Kieckhefer taking one of Republican state senate candidate Gary Schmidt’s campaign commercials off the air on grounds that Flanagan and Kieckhefer believed it contained false information. As we noted at the time (“A judicial outrage,” June 12), under federal law, political candidates can put any ads they want on the air and it is the job of voters, not judges, to decide whether they are accurate.

And the only way a television station can refuse to sell time to candidates is to refuse to sell to all candidates. Both the U.S. Supreme Court and the Federal Communications Commission have issued rulings that tell local judges to butt out of these disputes. Flanagan’s order was an undeclared in-kind contribution to Kieckhefer’s campaign.

In September, District Judge David Hardy foolishly approved a legal settlement between the Washoe County School Board and superintendent of schools Pedro Martinez that contains—at Hardy’s insistence—this gag rule: “The parties agree that they will not disparage or malign one another with respect to any matter relating to their employment or service, their professionalism, ethics, work ethics, character or integrity.”

There was a campaign for school board going on.

Superintendent Martinez and the school board are principal campaign issues in this county. The members of the school board are elected officials. This is a matter involving pure political speech, and Hardy’s brainless order prevented voters from hearing about it from those most directly involved.

I would like to hear more good news and less about all the negative things in the world. Give people something to smile about.

In the case of Adam Laxalt, the situation and the law was a bit different. He went to television stations and asked them to take advertisements for his opponent off the air because he didn’t like their content. Now, these were ads put on the air by groups supporting his opponent, and the law is different for independent groups than for candidate ads. Laxalt had the right to pressure TV stations.

But both he and his opponent had groups supporting them with big money, and every indication from campaign disclosures was that Laxalt was getting much more—by at least a million dollars—than his opponent. Dick Cheney, John Bolton, Newt Gingrich, Tom Ridge, Ed Meese and a Republican lawyers group were among those pouring money into Laxalt’s campaign.

So what does it say about Laxalt that he was willing to scurry to local businesspeople and try to get them to censor his opponent instead of simply enjoying his financial advantage and standing up, making his case to the voters and letting them decide whether he or his opponent were right? How much trust does he have in the voters he was asking to elect him?

Voters should hear everything about candidates and people like Kieckhefer, Flanagan, Hardy and Laxalt should get out of the way. If they don’t want to obey federal law, or trust the voters’ judgment, they could try the Nevada Constitution: “Every citizen may freely speak, write and publish his sentiments on all subjects being responsible for the abuse of that right; and no law shall be passed to restrain or abridge the liberty of speech or of the press.” Ω |

Remember the golden rule The publishing deadline prevents me from writing about Tuesday’s election results, but there are already some obvious and painful lessons to be learned from the 2014 cycle.

The endless money unleashed by the Citizens United court decision that gave corporations a person’s by right to free speech has overwhelmed Sheila Leslie our election process, reducing it to an obscene advertising blitz funded by shadowy billionaires. Candidates are now more prone to do the bidding of the moneyed class lest they be denied critical funding or worse, face an opponent with the resources to bankroll relentless attacks. This dynamic has produced an even more apathetic and cynical electorate than we ever thought possible. Even inveterate voters are disgusted.

A compounding problem is that many natural leaders now refuse to run for public office, not able to stomach what must be done in order to compete. Look no further than the Nevada governor’s race for proof where the absence of a credible Democrat at the top of the

ticket was a powerful disincentive to vote.

Democrats in the Legislature didn’t help the situation by embracing Gov. Sandoval and his policies so completely. It’s one thing to legislate in a bipartisan manner. It’s another to offer no alternative vision.

If there’s no articulated difference between the parties, why vote? There’s a pervasive attitude this year that it doesn’t really matter who wins the election since “they” are all the same.

Legislative Democrats had many opportunities to present an agenda for the working person. They could have campaigned as economic populists by supporting Questions 2 and 3, making corporations pay their fair share and promising a reduction of the tax burden on working Nevadans. They could have run against corruption in government by banning gifts from lobbyists and demanding real-time campaign finance reporting. They could have offered a serious plan for reforming Nevada’s revenue structure to strengthen education from pre-K to college.

Instead, campaign mailers were filled with platitudes and the same empty promises to “fight for you in Carson City” that hasn’t produced much of anything in the last few years. It’s no surprise young people saw little reason to rally. Minority voters, still mad about the national stalemate on immigration, voting rights, and the minimum wage weren’t willing to engage. Voters, tired of gerrymandered districts that limit their candidate pool, stayed home. Not such a mystery, really.

Tuning out tired campaign themes and messages is increasingly easy.

Watch taped television and fastforward through the commercials.

Don’t answer your phone if you can’t ID the caller. Filter out the mailers with the other junk mail that goes straight to the recycle bin. Don’t answer the door.

And ask any candidate about the voter forums where there are more candidates than people in the audience.

Meanwhile Republicans dumped, or hid, their Tea Party inclinations

and effectively muzzled their most extreme members. They also turned out their more reliable base in early voting, with devastating precision.

But they’re sure to overreach in the months to come, and hopefully voters will react in time for the 2016 elections when presidential and U.S. Senate races in Nevada will provide the contrast needed to motivate progressives to vote.

But it still is mostly about the money.

In the week before the election, former President Bill Clinton came to Las Vegas to try and inspire Democrats to take the trouble to vote. He had just one thing wrong when he told the crowd at the rally a week before the election, “What’s really on the ballot is whether we go back to a trickle-down economy and whether only the rich get the benefits or whether we have shared opportunity and shared responsibility and the same rules apply to one another.”

There’s no going back. We’re already there. Ω

When banks lend money from checking accounts (demand deposits), what happens if depositors suddenly demand their money?

There is a “run” on the banks. The banks shut down. Depositors lose their savings.

While banks are lending this artificially created money, there is a “boom” of investment. When the people want their money back, then there is a “bust” or recession.

When money is cheap and comes largely from demandable accounts, businesses invest in projects for which there is no real consumer demand. These projects are the first to go under. The housing booms in the “sand states” of Southern California, Arizona, Florida and Nevada were the hardest hit in 2008. Government mandates to finance homes for those not credit worthy led to “subprime mortgages,” which were then bundled into securities and traded. When the bust began, markets had no idea what these bundled assets were

really worth. They turned to the government to get bailed out, but libertarians insisted the bailouts will only start the boom and bust cycle over again. These “toxic assets” should have been liquidated and the monetary and banking system reformed. A bill to audit the Federal Reserve is in the Senate. Dean Heller supports it, but Harry Reid is sitting on it.

There are two ways to reform the system. One is Andrew Jackson’s way. The other is the progressives’ way. We have tried the progressive approach of a central bank with monopoly control over a monetary system based on debt since 1913. Ron Paul got more people to think maybe we should try Andrew Jackson’s way.

Jackson waged war on the national bank of his day and won.

He destroyed the Second Bank of the U.S., and after a sharp recession America prospered. During the gilded age, the crony capitalist Republicans created a National

Banking System, which in 1913 was converted to the Federal Reserve System.

The U.S. Constitution states, “No State shall make any thing except gold and silver coin a tender in payment of debt.” Obviously, every state makes fiat paper money created by the Fed its tender in payment of debt. So, every state is in violation of the Constitution.

When Jackson was president, the states were powerful and corrupt, and he forced them to pay their debts in gold and silver.

Now the federal government is powerful and corrupt. The states could force the federal government to put its house in order by refusing to pay debts until they can do so in gold and silver coin.

Unfortunately, we would need 50 state level Andrew Jacksons, or at least 10 or 20, to do that. Since Jackson was the last president who left office with the federal government debt free, that is not likely to happen soon. Ω

Emancipation gesture History cop Guy Louis Rocha was no doubt pleased by the reporting on the arrival of the original copy of the Emancipation Proclamation in Reno. Most reports avoided saying that the document, signed by President Abraham Lincoln, freed the slaves.

In the Reno Gazette-Journal, for instance, Susan Skorupa carefully wrote that the document “opened the way to abolishing slavery in the U.S.” The proclamation did not free slaves. A U.S. president did not have that power, and Congress did not authorize Lincoln to use wartime powers to do it. The proclamation was signed as a gesture to discourage European leaders, who did not know the extent of a U.S. president’s powers, from allying with the Confederacy.

The document is in Reno as part of an exhibit at the Nevada Museum of Art on Nevada’s 150th anniversary of statehood.

The proclamation has nothing to do with Nevada, but helps draw visitors to a larger exhibit that includes other documents with greater linkage to the state.

For instance, the locally famous telegram that wired Nevada’s entire proposed state constitution to Lincoln in October 1964 is on display, taken down by hand by telegraphers at the U.S. War Department. There is a message to Congress dealing with Nevada that bears Lincoln’s signature, plus documents recording Nevada’s approval of the Thirteenth Amendment, which did abolish slavery.

Reid trials: personal and political U.S. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada had some difficult days leading up to the election, including a personal tragedy that did not stop political problems.

At the Nevada Governor’s Banquet marking the 150th anniversary of statehood, Reid failed to appear as scheduled. Gov. Brian Sandoval told the crowd Reid had flown back to Washington, D.C., to be with his daughter Lana who was headed into surgery and asked for a moment of silence for the Reid family. Reid’s office declined to disclose the nature of the surgery.

Lana Reid was injured in a March 2010 Virginia traffic accident in which the senator’s wife, Landra, suffered a broken nose, broken back and broken neck.

A few days before the surgery, Reid was the subject of speculation on whether he could command the votes of two female Democratic senate candidates for reelection as Democratic leader.

Those candidates are Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Michelle Nunn of Georgia.

Landrieu, a third-term incumbent in a three-person race so close that it posed the possibility of a runoff, distanced herself from the Democratic Party generally and President Obama and Reid in particular. After saying she would vote to reelect Reid as leader, she changed to, “We’ll see. I think Harry Reid gets beat up more than he deserves. And I’m not saying yes and I’m not saying no.”

Nunn’s father, former Sen. Sam Nunn, took a wildly offmessage shot at Reid on Oct. 3. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, “Michelle Nunn’s father also said his daughter, the Democratic nominee for Senate, has little obligation to support Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., should Democrats maintain the chamber in November—given that Reid, in the spring of 2013, asked her not to run for Sam Nunn’s old seat. ‘They said they had their eye on another candidate,’ Sam Nunn said. Presumably, that other candidate would have been U.S. Rep. John Barrow, D-Augusta, whom many Democrats were attempting to lure into the contest at the time.”

In 2006, Reid helped force Iraq war veteran Paul Hackett out of the Ohio U.S. Senate primary race in favor of competing candidate Sherrod Brown (“Friendly fire,” RN&R, Feb. 23, 2006).

Stepping down Bob Cashell’s office is nearly vacant, but his record is not Reno Mayor Bob Cashell was term limited out of office this year, so his name was not on this week’s election ballot. by Anyone following him around the Dennis Myers day before the election, though, would have gotten the impression there were a lot of people who wanted it to be.

“Thank you for your service,” said one woman in a breakfast circle at the Gold ’N’ Silver Restaurant, reaching for his hand to shake.

“You did a good job,” said another customer.

Both husband and wife at one booth thanked Cashell.

Cashell refuses to claim any accomplishments for himself.

This is not an age when politicians get much positive feedback from the public. But Cashell is a throwback to an earlier kind of politics, when competing politicians worked together even while disagreeing. And he was able to bring other members of the Reno City Council to see the value in that way of doing business.

One of the reasons he ran for mayor—and one of the reasons he was recruited for the job—is that Reno’s City Council then was riven by disagreements. In addition, it

had alienated many residents by its high-handedness toward citizens in getting rid of the Mapes Hotel and funding the train trench.

Cashell’s skills at working with people came into play quickly after he took office. Councilmembers still disagreed, but they stopped letting those disagreements interfere with getting things done, and Cashell wanted inclusiveness toward the public. Some of his stances were not popular, such as his support for lowering the railroad tracks into the trench (a project already partly underway when he became mayor), but his insistence on everyone having their say defused ill will.

Cashell’s predecessor, Jeff Griffin, was heard to say that the way to revitalize the downtown was to get people to move back there to live. During Cashell’s tenure, the Comstock, Sundowner and Golden Phoenix casinos were converted to residential properties and new residential structures were also built on Sierra and State streets.

But the progress of most of them was damaged by the recession that began in 2007, and hopes for a full fledged grocery store seen as essential for fostering downtown residential living never came to be.

“A couple of majors talked to me before, but there just wasn’t enough market, there wasn’t enough residential,” Cashell said. It was something of a chicken-and-egg thing.

Residents are difficult to lure until there is a grocery, and a grocery company is reluctant to come in until there are enough residents to support a store. Cashell said a new purchaser of the Woolworth building at First and Virginia may open a small grocery, such as already exists on West Street, but it won’t be the kind of full-fledged market needed.

Many such projects had good and bad sides. A downtown ballpark was built and a minor league team came in, generating community excitement. But the financing in hard times was shaky and a refinancing included the city dipping into the general fund annually and taking back ownership of the ballpark in 30 years—meaning the city will get back an aging hulk about the time it needs major repair or demolition.

Other failures and disappointments that happened on Cashell’s watch included his inability to keep county/city fire services consolidation together and the fact that the King’s Inn is still standing.

In coming into office 12 years ago, Cashell named the demolition of the long-vacant Third Street casino hotel as one of his principal goals.

“They built over leased land,” he said this week, explaining why the city was never able to get control of the property to tear down the derelict. “There’s a [separate] piece of property right in the middle of it. Say 50, 60 feet by 150 back to the alley.”

As for rebuilding fire consolidation, he kept trying for months after the county pulled out of joint fire services. He blamed that county decision on the desire of some county commissioners to break the union. Cashell said he finally had to give up trying soon after the 2012 election, though he still made stabs at it from time to time. “We just kept running into roadblocks,” he said. He remains convinced that in terms of response times, consolidation beats separate operations.

City leaders did not stay ahead of sewage capacity, which in the 1970s reached a crisis point and forced a Reno-Sparks sewer plant expansion. The plant was already receiving clean water fines when, in the closing months of Cashell’s term, Tesla Motors decided to move to Storey County. The nearest communities for its employees are Fernley and Sparks, the latter joint operators of the plant with Reno.

bring up to 6,500 new workers, and the plant has fewer than 4,000 additional hook-ups to parcel out.

City government and the Reno-Sparks Convention & Visitors Authority stayed focused on gambling well after it became clear that tribal gambling in California was slowly eroding Reno’s principal group of customers. Meanwhile, under private entities, arts programs had slowly been growing and creating a new identity for the city. It took too long for the business community and government to embrace that new field of tourism, but eventually they did. It was something that worked for Cashell, who had long had a leg in the arts community. In a book he wrote in 2010, Cashell describes attending a 1970s meeting at his wife’s request of the board of directors of the Nevada Museum of Art. Part way through the meeting, happily seated anonymously in the audience, Cashell—then a truck stop owner—heard board member Howard Rosenberg nominate him for board chair. The two men had once worked on a budget problem together and apparently Rosenberg had been impressed.

“Well, the members voted for me to chair their board,” Cashell wrote.

Cashell didn’t want to retire as mayor. He would have run again if the law allowed it. “I’m probably getting to the age where I should think about retirement, but really I don’t want to retire,” he said two years ago (“Action figure,” RN&R, July 19, 2012).

And he is not retiring after he leaves office next week. He said he’ll be deciding what to do soon, but it will include new work. “I’ve seen people who lie around on the couch after they retire die, and that’s not for me,” he said.

He didn’t want to retire, but term limits require it.

Some of the things he says sound kind of hokey on paper, but coming from Cashell in person, they ring true because he does mean them. “There is no I in team and no I in we,” he said. “I had a great council, and we did good things together.”

To this day he adamantly refuses to name his accomplishments, saying that only by working together did the council get things done, and that took all of them. Ω

Picking pigs Heritage breeds may help small farmers succeed Heritage livestock breeds are animal breeds that were raised by farmers more frequently prior to big, industrial agriculture. Many of these breeds have gone extinct, and in sustainable agriculture, there’s now a movement to preserve by Sage Leehey those that remain.

Wendy Baroli of GirlFarm/Grow For Me Sustainable Farm believes that s age l@ heritage breeds present a great opportunity for small scale Northern Nevada news review.c om farmers.

“Hopefully, everyone will pick a breed and help bring it back,” Baroli said. “It would be wonderful to say that Northern Nevada farmers have cornered the market in unique, heritage meats and things like that because that’s what we can do here.”

Nevada has some challenges with agriculture, but it also has one asset that could help make local farmers succeed with heritage animals.

“One thing we do have is land,” Baroli said. “Even if we don’t always have a lot of water, we have land. And that gives us the opportunity to do animal husbandry a little bit better. … We have challenges with produce because of our shorting growing season, but there’s some things that we can do with heritage animals that could really tie us to this local food and heritage breed preservation. It could put us on the map in terms of food if we stop trying to compete with big ag and make our own niche.”

Baroli preaches this to local farmers whenever she can. On her own farm, she raises all heritage breeds—pigs, turkeys, laying hens, cattle, sheep. And several local farmers are doing similar things. Sunny Day Organic Farms in Stagecoach raises heritage pigs and Nevada Green Barn Farm in Dayton to find out more about raises heritage turkeys, for example.

Baroli raises Berkshire boars on her farm. One of these heritage pigs—a runt named Inch—is currently being raised by Urban Roots Garden Classrooms for a friend of the farm. Berkshire boars are especially great for Nevada because they need to graze—and Nevada grows a lot of alfalfa and hay—and they’re black and don’t sunburn like the pink pigs of big ag do.

Pink pigs often need more antibiotics as well, which is a growing concern in our meats.

“And we’re assuming that it’s just randomly happening, and no one’s really paying attention, but the reason that they use antibiotics in a lot of these animal feeds is because pink pigs sunburn, and they get diarrhea,” Baroli said. “When they get diarrhea, it’s called scours. When they get scours, they die. So to prevent that, it would really be smart to bring back these heritage breeds that are adaptable to certain climates or certain regions. …

“There’s an amazing opportunity, and you don’t have to raise 500 of them to do well if you pick your market. So for small farmers, it’s a great way to make a name for themselves. Restaurateurs understand it. Consumers who actually care about flavor are starting to understand it. And it’s something that can differentiate us in the big market where they compete on pennies, we can actually compete in dollars.” Ω OPINION

1. Our oceans are acidifying—even if the nightly news hasn’t told you yet.

As humanity continues to fill the atmosphere with harmful gases, the planet is becoming less hospitable to life as we know it. The vast oceans absorb much of the carbon dioxide we have produced, from the industrial revolution through the rise of global capitalism. Earth’s self-sacrifice spared the atmosphere nearly 25 percent of humanity’s CO2 emissions, slowing the onslaught of many severe weather consequences.

Although the news media have increasingly covered the climate weirding of global warming—hurricane superstorms, fierce tornado clusters, overwhelming snowstorms, and record-setting global high temperatures—our oceans’ peril has largely stayed submerged below the biggest news stories.

The rising carbon dioxide in our oceans burns up and deforms

the smallest, most abundant food at the bottom of the deep blue food chain. One vulnerable population is the tiny shelled swimmers known as the sea butterfly. In only a few short decades, the death and deformation of this fragile and translucent species could endanger predators all along the oceanic food web, scientists warn.

This “butterfly effect,” once unleashed, potentially threatens fisheries that feed more than 1 billion people worldwide.

Since ancient times, humans fished the oceans for food. Now, we’re frying ocean life before we even catch it, starving future generations in the process. Largely left out of national news coverage, this dire report was brought to light by a handful of independent-minded journalists: Craig Welch from the Seattle Times, Julia Whitty of

Mother Jones, and Eli Kintisch of ScienceNOW. It is also the top story of Project Censored, an annual book and reporting project that features the year’s most underreported news stories, striving to unmask censorship, self-censorship, and propaganda in corporate-controlled media outlets. The book is set for release in late October.

“Information is the currency of democracy,” Ralph Nader, the prominent consumer advocate and three-time presidential candidate, wrote in his foreword to this year’s Project Censored 2015. But with most mass media owned by narrow corporate interests, “the general public remains uninformed.”

Whereas the mainstream media poke and peck at noteworthy events at single points in time, often devoid of historical context or

analysis, Project Censored seeks to clarify understanding of real-world issues and focus on what’s important. Context is key, and many of its “top censored” stories highlight deeply entrenched policy issues that require more explanation than a simple sound bite can provide.

Campus and faculty from more than two dozen colleges and universities join in this ongoing effort, headquartered at Sonoma State University. Some 260 students and 49 faculty vet thousands of news stories on select criteria: importance, timeliness, quality of sources, and the level of corporate news coverage.

The top 25 finalists are sent to Project Censored’s panel of judges, who then rank the entries, with ocean acidification topping this year’s list. [Editor’s note: This newspaper’s project, Fatal Encounters, was named No. 18 in the top 25 most censored stories.

“There are outlets, regular daily papers, who are independent and they’re out there,” Andy Lee Roth, associate director of Project Censored, told us. Too many news

outlets are beholden to corporate interests, but Welch of the Seattle Times bucked the trend, Roth said, by writing some of the deepest coverage yet on ocean acidification.

“There are reporters doing the highest quality of work, as evidenced by being included in our list,” Roth said. “But the challenge is reaching as big an audience as [the story] should.”

Indeed, though Welch’s story was reported in the Seattle Times, a mid-sized daily newspaper, this warning is relevant to the entire world. To understand the impact of ocean acidification, Welch asks readers to “imagine every person on earth tossing a hunk of CO2 as heavy as a bowling ball into the sea. That’s what we do to the oceans every day.”

Journalism tends to be more “action focused,” Roth said, looking to define conflict in everything it sees. A recently top-featured story on CNN focused on President Barack Obama’s “awkward coffee cup salute” to a Marine, which ranks only slightly below around-the-clock coverage of the president’s ugly tan suit as a low point in mainstream media’s focus on the trivial.

“Seething Depths” continued from page 13 As Nader noted, “‘important stories’ are often viewed as dull by reporters and therefore unworthy of coverage.” But mainstream media do cover some serious topics with weight, as they did in the wake of the police officer shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. So what’s the deciding factor? As Roth tells it, corporate news focuses on “drama, and the most dramatic action is of course violence.”

But the changes caused by ocean acidification are gradual. Sea butterflies are among the most abundant creatures in our oceans, and are increasingly born with shells that look like cauliflower or sandpaper, making this and similar species more susceptible to infection and predators.

“Ocean acidification is changing the chemistry of the world’s water faster than ever before, and faster than the world’s leading scientists predicted,” Welch said, but it’s not getting the attention is deserves.

“Combined nationwide spending on acidification research for eight federal agencies, including grants to university scientists by the National Science Foundation, totals about $30 million a year—less than the annual budget for the coastal Washington city of Hoquiam, population 10,000.”

Our oceans may slowly cook our food chain into new forms with potentially catastrophic consequences. Certainly 20 years from now, when communities around the world lose their main source of sustenance, the news will catch on.

But will the problem make the front page tomorrow, while there’s still time to act?

Probably not, and that’s why we have Project Censored and its annual list. Here are the remaining top 10 underreported stories: 2. Top 10 U.S. aid recipients practice torture Sexual abuse, children kept in cages, extrajudicial murder. While these sound like horrors the United States would stand against, the reverse is true: This country is funding these practices.

The United States is a signatory of the United Nations’ Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, but the top 10 international recipients of U.S. foreign assistance in 2014 all practice torture, according to human-rights groups, as reported by Daniel Wickham of online outlet Left Foot Forward.

Israel received over $3 billion in U.S. aid for fiscal year 2013-14, according to a Congressional Research Service report. Israel was criticized by the country’s own Public Defender’s Office for torturing children suspected of minor crimes.

“During our visit, held during a fierce storm that hit the state, attorneys met detainees who described to them a shocking picture: In the middle of the night dozens of detainees were transferred to the external iron cages built outside the IPS transition facility in Ramla,” the PDO wrote, according to The Independent.

The next top recipients of U.S. foreign aid were Afghanistan, Egypt, Pakistan, Nigeria, Jordan, Iraq, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. All countries were accused of torture by human-rights groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

Kenyan police in Nairobi tortured, raped, or otherwise abused more than 1,000 refugees from 2012 to 2013, Human Rights Watch found.

The Kenyan government received $564 million from the United States in 2013-14.

When the U.S. funds a highway or other project that it’s proud of, it plants a huge sign proclaiming “your tax dollars at work.” When the U.S. funds torturers, the corporate media bury the story, or worse, don’t report it at all.

3. Trans-Pacific Partnership, a secret deal to help corporations The Trans-Pacific Partnership is like the Stop Online Piracy Act on steroids, yet few have heard of it, let alone enough people to start an internet campaign to topple it. Despite details revealed by Wikileaks, the nascent agreement has been largely ignored by the corporate media.

Even the world’s elite are out of the loop: Only three officials in each of the 12 signatory countries have access to this developing trade agreement that potentially impacts more than 800 million people.

The agreement touches on intellectual property rights and the regulation of private enterprise between nations, and is open to negotiation and viewing by 600 “corporate advisors” from big oil, pharmaceutical, to entertainment companies.

Meanwhile, more than 150 House Democrats signed a letter urging President Obama to halt his efforts to fast-track negotiations, and to allow Congress the ability to weigh in now on an agreement only the White House has seen.

Many criticized the secrecy surrounding the TPP, arguing the real-world consequences may be grave. Doctors Without Borders wrote, “If harmful provisions in the U.S. proposals for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement are not removed before it is finalized, this trade deal will have a real cost in human lives.”

4. Corporate Internet providers threaten net neutrality This entry demonstrates the nuance in Project Censored’s media critique. Verizon v. FCC may weaken internet regulation, which Electronic Frontier Foundation and other digital freedom advocates allege would create a two-tiered internet system.

Under the FCC’s proposed new rules, corporate behemoths such as Comcast or Verizon could charge entities to use faster bandwidth, which advocates say would create financial barriers to free speech and encourage censorship.

Project Censored alleges corporate outlets such as The New York Times and Forbes “tend to highlight the business aspects of the case, skimming over vital particulars affecting the public and the internet’s future.” Yet this is a case where corporate media were circumvented by power of the viral web. John Oliver, comedian and host of Last Week Tonight on HBO, recently gave a stirring 13-minute treatise on the importance of stopping the FCC’s new rules, resulting in a flood of comments to the FCC defending a more open internet. The particulars of net neutrality have since been thoroughly reported in the corporate media.

But, as Project Censored notes, mass media coverage came only after the FCC’s rule change was proposed, giving activists little time to right any wrongs. It’s a subtle but important distinction.

5. Bankers remain on Wall Street despite major crimes Bankers responsible for rigging municipal bonds and bilking billions of dollars from American cities have largely escaped criminal charges.

who, while working for GE Capital, allegedly skimmed money from public schools, hospitals, libraries, and nursing homes, according to Rolling Stone.

Dominick Carollo, Steven Goldberg and Peter Grimm were dubbed a part of the “modern American mafia,” by the magazine’s Matt Taibbi, one of the few journalists to consistently cover their trial.

Meanwhile, disturbingly uninformed cable media “journalists” defended the bankers, saying they shouldn’t be prosecuted for “failure,” as if cheating vulnerable Americans were a bad business deal.

“Had the U.S. authorities decided to press criminal charges,” Assistant U.S. Attorney General Lanny Breuer told Taibbi, “HSBC [a British bank] would almost certainly have lost its banking license in the U.S., the future of the institution would have been under threat, and the entire banking system would have been destabilized.”

Over the course of decades, the nation’s bankers transformed into the modern mafioso. Unfortunately, our modern media changed as well, and are no longer equipped to tackle systemic, complex stories.

6. The “Deep State” of plutocratic control What’s frightening about the puppeteers who pull the strings of our national government is not how hidden they are, but how hidden they are not.

From defense contractors to multinational corporations, a wealthy elite using an estimated $32 trillion in tax-exempt offshore havens are the masters of our publicly elected officials. In an essay written for Moyer and Company by Mike Lofgren, a congressional staffer of 28 years focused on national security, this cabal of wealthy interests comprise our nation’s “Deep State.”

As Lofgren writes for Moyers, “The Deep State is the big story of our time. It is the red thread that runs through the war on terrorism, the financialization and deindustrialization of the American economy, the rise of a plutocratic social structure and political dysfunction.”

This is a story that truly challenges the mass media, which do report on the power of wealth, in bits and pieces. But although the cabal’s disparate threads are occasionally

pulled, the spider’s web of corruption largely escapes corporate media’s larger narrative.

The myopic view censors the full story as surely as outright silence would. The problem deepens every year.

“There are now 854,000 contract personnel with top-secret clearances—a number greater than that of top-secret-cleared civilian employees of the government,” Lofgren wrote, of a group that together would “occupy the floor space of almost three Pentagons—about 17 million square feet.”

7. FBI dismisses plot against Occupy as NSA cracks down on dissent Nationally, law enforcement worked in the background to monitor and suppress the Occupy Wall Street movement, a story the mainstream press has shown little interest in covering.

A document obtained in a FOIA request by David Lindorff of Who, What WHY from the FBI office in Houston, Texas revealed an alleged assassination plot targeting a Occupy group, which the FBI allegedly did not warn the movement about.

planned to engage in sniper attacks against protestors (sic) in Houston, Texas if deemed necessary. An identified [DELETED] had received intelligence that indicated the protesters in New York and Seattle planned similar protests in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin, Texas. [DELETED] planned to gather intelligence against the leaders of the protest groups and obtain photographs, then formulate a plan to kill the leadership via suppressed sniper rifles.”

Lindorff confirmed the document’s veracity with the FBI. When contacted

by Lindorff, Houston Police were uninterested, and seemingly, according to Lindorff, uninformed.

In Arizona, law enforcement exchanged information of possible Occupy efforts with JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, according to a report by the Center for Media and Democracy titled Dissent on Terror. The CEO meant to evade possible protests, and local law enforcement was happy to help.

Law enforcement’s all-seeing eyes broadened through the national rise of “fusion centers” over the past decade, hubs through which state agencies exchange tracking data on groups exercising free speech. And as we share, “like,” and “check-in” online with ever-more frequency,

8. Ignoring extreme weather connection to global warming In what can only be responded to with a resounding “duh,” news analyses have found mainstream media frequently report on severe weather changes without referring to global warming as the context or cause, even as a question.

As Project Censored notes, a study by Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting found extreme weather events in 2013 spurred 450 broadcast news segments, only 16 of which even mentioned climate change.

National news outlets have fallen on the job as well, as The New York Times recently shuttered its environmental desk and its Green blog, reducing the number of reporters exclusively chasing down climatechange stories.

Unlike many journalists, ordinary people often recognize the threat of our warming planet. Just as this story on Project Censored went to press, over 400,000 protested in the People’s Climate March in New York City alone, while simultaneous protests erupted across the globe, calling for government, corporate, and media

leaders to address the problem.

“There is a huge mismatch between the magnitude of the challenge and the response we heard here today,” Graca Machel, the widow of former South African President Nelson Mandela, told the United Nations conference on climate change. “The scale is much more than we have achieved.”

and consumers in the Eurasian region, its large transit network, and its available underground gas storage capacities,” highlighting its economic importance to the U.S. and its allies.

10. World Health Organization suppresses report on Iraq impacts The United States’ legacy in Iraq possibly goes beyond death to a living nightmare of cancer and birth defects, due to the military’s use of depleted uranium weapons, a World Health Organization study found.

Iraq is poisoned.

Much of the report’s contents were leaked to the BBC during its creation. But the release of the report, completed in 2012 by WHO, has stalled. Critics allege the U.S. is deliberately blocking its release, masking a damning Middle East legacy rivaling the horrors of Agent Orange in Vietnam.

But Iraq will never forget the U.S. intervention, as mothers cradle babies bearing scars obtained in the womb, the continuing gifts of our invasion. Ω

9. U.S. media hypocrisy in covering Ukraine crisis The U.S. battle with Russia over Ukraine’s independence is actually an energy pipeline squabble, a narrative lost by mainstream media coverage, Project Censored alleges.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has drawn fire from the media as a tyrant, without complex analyses of his country’s socioeconomic interests, according to Project Censored. As the media often do, they have turned the conflict into a cult of personality, talking up Putin’s shirtless horseback riding and his hard-line style with deftness missing from their political analysis.

As The Guardian UK's Nafeez Ahmed reported, a recent U.S. State Department-sponsored report noted “Ukraine’s strategic location between the main energy producers (Russia and the Caspian Sea area)

Love it or loathe it, ‘cosmetic gynecology’ may be here to stay STORY AND PHOTO BY GEORGIA FISHER

N

ever heard of cosmetic gynecology? Well, gird your loins.

For the most part, this niche medical specialty—which some liken to mutilation—is exactly as it sounds: plastic surgery to improve the appearance of one’s vagina. It’s also fodder for a story that’ll reference genitals constantly, so here goes.

Years ago, when a mentor encouraged her to learn about the practice, “I was like, ‘Eh, I really don’t know about that,’” said gynecologist Elizabeth Hutson. “I don’t want to do anything just to make money. I want to help my patients.”

But because she’d always respected the doctor in question, she took one of his classes.

“He was so meticulous,” Hutson said of gynecologist Red Alinsod, whose practice is in Laguna Beach.

Just as stunning was feedback she began to get from her clients in Reno.

“They’re among my happiest patients,” said Hutson, who seems to be the only local gynecologist offering cosmetic work alongside standard OB-GYN care. “They’ve had something that’s bothered them their whole lives,” she said, “or they’ve had babies, and things [haven’t been] the same. It’s really a cool thing.”

or outer labia, is a common request.

So’s vaginoplasty, which can involve tightening the area after childbirth.

“People don’t know who to go to,” Hutson said. “They’re told by everyone that everything looks normal—it’s fine, it’s in the normal range—and that’s true, but it’s not functioning the way they want it to if they have long labia, or if their vagina is kind of lax.

It’s pushing or pulling or rubbing, and it’s driving them crazy. So who am I to say it’s normal?”

Practical benefits are part of the picture, in other words, which is why some of Hutson’s cosmetic work doubles as standard medical care.

Plastic surgeons offer “vaginal rejuvenation,” too, including Reno doctor Phillip Dahan, who’s apparently been at it for 17 years. If that’s surprising, maybe it shouldn’t be.

“People go to work and say, ‘Oh, I had a nose job,’” said Dahan’s assistant, Madison Wilson. “It’s watercooler talk. But ‘I had my labia done’ isn’t really the same thing.”

Eye of the beholder Female genital mutilation has made headlines for decades, generating nonprofits and new legislation, including in Nevada. According to the World Health Organization, FGM “includes procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female

genital organs for non-medical reasons,” such as removal of the clitoris, and all but sealing the vaginal opening. It’s chilling, violent stuff steeped in old-world traditions, usually endured by girls younger than 15.

The W.H.O.’s definition of mutilation is also broad enough to cover piercings, and could technically include cosmetic gynecology, depending on how it’s read. (The organization’s media office didn’t respond to a short-notice request for comment on this story.)

Meanwhile, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has published a committee opinion on vaginal plastic surgery—and you can bet it’s not sunshine and rainbows.

“We aren’t fans,” an ACOG spokeswoman said in an email as she forwarded the information.

Understatement.

“Over the past several years,” reads an official press release, “an increasing number of physicians have been offering various types of vaginal surgeries that are marketed to women as ways to enhance genital appearance and sexual gratification. Some of these procedures, such as ‘vaginal rejuvenation,’ appear to be modifications of traditional vaginal surgical procedures for genuine medical conditions.”

Treatments for pelvic prolapse and chronic irritation are on the go-ahead list, as is the reversal of FGM and

drawing out the word. “That’s how I trained. How can you go against that sort of thing?”

You can hear a little smile in her voice, though. She always seems to have one.

“Many women don’t realize that the appearance of external genitals varies significantly from woman to woman,” added doctor and committee member Abbey Berenson.

“As OB-GYNs, we know this to be the case from years of experience.”

Art is everywhere, from fashion photography and modern décor in the lobby-to-ceiling decorations you’ll only see if you’re face-up on an exam table. Hutson shares the space with gynecologist Pamela Netuschil, her

business partner and longtime friend.

Seemingly at random, their office also includes a med spa with “injectables” such as Botox for the face. Nurses Neece Boyden and Rina Netuschil run this area.

Nurse Netuschil is rather outspoken about the whole pretty-privates thing.

“I had [labiaplasty],” she said outright. “Snip, snip. I didn’t want to see it when I was standing there looking in the mirror.”

She may get more work done, she said, as she’s now single for the first time in years.

“I’d love to put filler and laser [work] down there, and puff up the plump parts, too.”

Her voice got softer.

“You do feel sexier,” she said.

“You can let them look at you naked.”

Another patient—an avid runner in her late 50s, who asked not to be named—went to Hutson because her anatomy was pinching when she exercised.

“It’s not about cosmetics,” she said. “It’s about comfort.”

Some patients are young, late teens to early 20s. Others have had one or more children, and though they’re not in any medical straits, they hope to reverse birth injuries and the like.

Once in a blue moon, someone will ask to have her hymen reconstructed before her wedding night.

Most operations are outpatient procedures, without general anesthetic.

There’s a popular labiaplasty look known as “the Barbie,” which might be described as minimalist (or severe, depending on where you stand) that heals especially well. If you’ve ever watched mainstream porn, we’re guessing you’ve seen this one.

But porn has no sway in her office, said Hutson. Cosmetic patients usually just arrive for routine care, then start bemoaning the quirks and folds that have annoyed them for years.

Any post-surgical scarring is undetectable to the eye, she said.

“Do it correctly, and you’d never know you’ve been there. It’s the way [the area] heals; it has great vascular supply, so the healing is fantastic.”

Elective surgeries are just a small fraction of her practice, for the record—around 5 to 10 percent. And they’re a cash business, because insurance won’t step in.

The industry “is in its infancy,” Hutson said, “but it’s one of the fastest-growing areas of cosmetic surgery.” Ω

An artist with a scientific mind: Megan Ellis.

Megan Ellis Essential Qualities, Innate Disposition, the title of Reno artist Megan Ellis’ current exhibiby tion at The Hub Coffee Co. on Riverside, Brad Bynum is taken from a definition of the word “natura,” the Latin word for nature. It refers bradb@ news review.c om to the traits that unite a biological species, and the variations that allow that species to continue to propagate.

Growing up, is Friday, nov. 21, she kept her scientific and artistic interests from 5 to 7 p.m. separate, but two years ago, while taking an evolutionary biology class, she discovered a way to unite the two.

“At the same time that I got interested in the subject matter, I got interested in the colored pencil medium,” she said.

She likes colored pencils because she enjoys the challenge of taking a medium that many people might associate with juvenilia and using it to make something more sophisticated.

“The only way to make it not seem juvenile it is to put in hours and hours and hours, and detail and detail and detail,” she said.

Her illustrations are loaded with meticulous precision, all of which she plans out carefully in advance. She carefully plots out each drawing, choosing to lay out different insects, plants, fungi and animals in nearly mandala-like symmetrical patterns.

“I got into the symmetry because I was doing a lot of butterflies,” she said.

“Often what I’ll do is make it almost 100 percent symmetrical, and then I’ll take a butterfly and he’ll be flying away or something. And it throws it off just enough to make it artistic.”

Many of the pieces focus on a large animal skull—a mountain lion, a ram, a fox or a bear—and living creatures, butterflies, snails and mushrooms, surround it.

“That is all math,” she said. “I like the idea of the mandala, especially because if you have just the skull, it’s a biological illustration, but when you add life to the skull, like butterflies … it’s more aesthetically pleasing than just looking at a picture of the skull.”

Usually, the butterflies and things included in the patterns of each drawing are life forms that exist in the skeletal animal’s own ecosystem, but Ellis will sometimes include something from outside of an ecosystem—a moth, for example—just because she likes its colors or patterns.

Again, she primarily approaches her artwork with a scientific perspective, but

with occasional variations just for aesthetic pleasure.

She thinks her work has the potential to appeal to people who enjoy it as visual art as well as viewers with more scientific minds, who might enjoy it as scientific illustration.

And, of course, some folks might enjoy both aspects.

“It gets away from the dichotomy of science versus art,” she said.

The exhibition is almost entirely the biological drawings—with one exception: a painting, titled “Three-eyed Crow,” which depicts a fantasy animal—a three-eyed crow. Fans of the Game of Thrones TV show of the A Song of Ice and Fire books might catch the reference to the mysterious creature that haunts Bran Stark’s dreams.

Essential Qualities, Innate Disposition is exhibition that consists almost entirely of scientific illustrations done with colored pencils, depicting animals found on Earth, but with the one variation of also including a painting of a fantasy creature. There’s consistency throughout the exhibition, but just enough variation to throw everything off, make the world more intriguing. Ω

Sitting next to the train station, at the end of a long, green building, is this little 28-seat, plank-floored, funky, hodge-podge of tables eatery. People were waiting for a table since it’s first-come, first-served. In all my years of tucking a napkin in to chow down, people waiting has always been a good indicator of the food to come, especially since there are so many restaurants within a stone’s throw—why wait?

Marty Carlton opened this place about two years ago. He has a pretty impressive background as a chef.

He started cooking at the age of 15 at a restaurant in Los Angeles, and after graduating from a Los Angeles culinary school, he worked in several restaurants including Peninsula Hotel of Beverley Hills, L’Orangerie, Ma Maison Hotel of Beverley Hills, and Brentwood Bar and Grill.

After a decade in Southern California, Chef Carlton picked up his bags and moved to the East Coast where he became the executive chef for a renowned restaurant, Seascapes in Kennebunkport, Maine. And he just happened to be the preferred chef of President and Mrs. Bush 41.

Marty's Cafe is a breakfast-lunch joint, and the menu for breakfast ($3-$14) has some standards, some classics and some originals. Lunch ($9-$16) has a sandwich theme— hoagies, sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs—covering the gambit of classics, up-scale, themed and originals. All

items are served all day, and the sandwiches have a choice of sides of potato salad, Italian macaroni salad, mixed green salad or kettle chips.

If you’re looking for stick-to-yourribs, plentiful food, this is the place.

I studied the hoagies ($12 half, $16 whole). The Philadelphia Evening Bulletin reported in 1953 that Italians working at the World War I–era shipyard in Philadelphia, known as Hog Island where emergency shipping was produced for the war effort, introduced the sandwich, by putting various meats, cheeses and lettuce between two slices of bread. This became known as the “Hog Island” sandwich; shortened to “Hoggies,” then the “hoagie.”

Katie’s was a leading contender.

It was built with mortadella, Genoa salami, pepperoni, fresh mozzarella, and house-made sun-dried tomato spread on a Truckee sourdough roll, but then my eye wondered and beheld a house-made meatloaf sandwich ($14), which got the call. It was loaded with caramelized onions, chipotle ketchup, topped with cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato on a nice, long house roll.

It was my grandmother’s meatloaf all over again, with the added touch of the caramelized onions that gave it a nice touch of sweet with the southwest flair of the chipotle pulled together by the cheese.

My buddy went for the green chili and chorizo breakfast burrito ($14), a Mt. Rose of a meal. Two eggs, Spanish rice, tomatillo salsa, guacamole, sour cream and green chilies rolled into a 12-inch flour tortilla.

Everything was very fresh, and the flavors were tart with the savory acidity of the tomatoes smooth out by the avocado and sour cream. The green chilies definitely tantalized the taste buds.

The ladies of the wait staff are super nice and very accommodating. The drink list is simple and all breakfast/lunch quaffs, OJ, coffee, tea, lemonade, and Pelligrino. Things like brie are used in omelets, there’s a house-made Granola ($9), Israeli couscous ($9), and Chicago-style hot dogs ($12).

Carlton reveals that the secret of cooking at Marty’s Cafe is about “simplicity at its finest—using common ingredients that the everyday customer can recognize, while still trying to be innovative.” Ω

Dear White People

Nightcrawler Jake Gyllenhaal is the very definition of serpentine in Nightcrawler, a scathing look at TV news and the lengths producers and stringers will go to for ratings and a payday.

Stealing wire fences and manhole covers for a living and desperate for some real work, Louis Bloom (Gyllenhaal) happens upon a car accident where an invasive cameraman is filmby ing bloody footage for a quick buck. Bloom, Bob Grimm an isolated man who spends his days studying like mad on the internet, pawns a stolen bike, bgrimm@ newsreview.c om gets himself a crappy video camera and scanner, and thrusts himself into the business of crime footage videography.

He starts small, grabbing footage at auto wrecks and butting heads with Joe Loder (Bill Paxton), a seasoned videographer who doesn’t like newbies treading on his territory.

of Nina (Rene Russo), a bloodthirsty TV news producer struggling to find her way on a lowrated station. She pays Louis a couple hundred bucks for his bloody footage. Against the wishes of her co-producers, Nina leads with Bloom’s video on the morning news, and an unholy alliance begins.

Bloom hires an assistant in Rick (Riz Ahmed of Four Lions), who clumsily navigates as they race through the streets of Los Angeles looking for carnage. Things escalate from filming car crashes and fires to filming shootings and other crime scenes. When things start to slow down, Louis becomes unrelenting in his attempts to find stories. In short, there is nothing he won’t do to get ahead and get the footage. Nothing.

He’ll move bodies to frame a better shot.

He’ll withhold footage from the cops after entering a residence to film murder victims.

And none of these actions even compares to what he will do in the event that an employee tries to negotiate for a raise. He’s a far cry from the puzzle solving, earnest news investigator Gyllenhaal played in Zodiac. He represents the complete degradation of media into something beneath sensationalistic into something that is pure evil.

Russo’s Nina is, in many ways, as psychotic as Louis. On the tail end of fledgling career, she is reckless, encouraging Louis to dig deeper and pushing him into more deranged territories. Russo hasn’t been this good in years.

Paxton, who used to specialize in wild man, gritty roles before Twister and Titanic, relishes the chance to get down and dirty again. He only has a few scenes in the film, but those scenes are true standouts.

Ahmed gives the sidekick role plenty of dimensions. He gets the laughs when they are supposed to come, but he also manages to create a frightening tension in his showdowns with Gyllenhaal.

This is the directorial debut of Dan Gilroy, who also penned the screenplay. Gilroy clearly doesn’t have a positive opinion of the broadcast news machine.

The folks putting together the news in this movie are something akin to cannibals and vampires waiting in the dark for a vein to be severed. Louis is a genuine movie monster.

Gyllenhaal lost a bunch of weight to play the greasy Louis, and he achieves a physical creepiness to go with his character’s infected soul. Louis is darkly funny, especially when he berates Rick or blackmails Nina. He’s also sinister and deeply scary in a very Travis Bickle/Taxi Driver sort of way.

Gyllenhaal is excellent here, his second great 2014 performance after playing twins in Enemy.

The guy is really stretching out.

According to Nightcrawler, gone are the days of dignified anchormen and heroic news gatherers. The tie-wearing talking heads and scrappy field reporters have been replaced by bloodsuckers and sycophants, with the likes of Louis Bloom leading the sick charge. The baser instincts that may’ve been a small part of an intrepid news reporter’s makeup have taken over and, unfortunately, they appear to be delivering what the people want. Ω

Writer/director Justin Simien makes a memorable debut, as good a comedic film about race relations that American cinema has seen it the last 25 years. Set in the fictional, predominantly white Ivy League college of Winchester University, the movie recalls the weeks leading up to a “race party” thrown by a white fraternity encouraging attendees to show up in black face. It’s a movie where the laughs come with a lot of stank on them, a biting, sometimes nasty satire that can never be accused of playing things safe. The film is named after a college radio show emceed by black female student Sam White (the mesmerizing Tessa Thompson).

White plays music, occasionally speaking over the tunes with stinging observations about black and white student interactions. She’s a media major who, quite convincingly, argues “Gremlins” is about suburban white fear of black culture with her professor. Fellow students suggest she might be the pissed off baby of Spike Lee and Oprah. Sporting a massive, epic Afro that white people can’t help but run their fingers through, black and gay Lionel Higgins (Tyler James Williams) is trying to figure out his place on the campus and in society. Thompson, who has been acting for about a decade, is a contender for breakout performer of the year. The movie might not hit the mark with every observation, but it hits a lot more than it misses. Simien throws caustic barbs at Tyler Perry, reality TV, Cosby and Tarantino. He is far more successful with his satire than he is with the film’s romantic relationships, which feel a little false and forced at times. That’s OK. With dialogue this sharp, I can forgive a few boring scenes with people who lack any real chemistry.

Gone Girl

David Fincher set out to make the nastiest, most poisonous movie about marriages gone bad ever made, and I think he succeeded. Fincher and Gillian Flynn, the author of the novel and screenplay, came up with a toxic cocktail, laced with dark humor, scabrous satire and blistering performances. On the day of his fifth anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) returns to his home after sulking at the bar he owns with his sister (a funny Carrie Coon) to discover his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), is missing. Nick calls the police and the in-laws, and quickly finds himself sucked up in a media circus that leaves him dazed and confused.

His demeanor in public is a strange combination of a malaise and ill-timed smiles. Yeah … he’s a suspect. Through a series of narrated flashbacks, we hear the story of the Flynne marriage from Amy’s perspective, chronicled in her diary. Then, at about the halfway point, the movie goes completely, wonderfully insane. For those unaware of the plot twist, my best advice to you is that you should accept it—even though it’s totally bug nuts—sit back, and enjoy the rest of this messed-up ride. Anybody who goes to this movie thinking they’re going to see something grounded in reality will be setting themselves up for disappointment. Gone Girl is nightmarish fantasy, a hyper-sensationalized “what-if” that thrives on its implausibility. Had this movie tried to stick closer to reality, it would’ve killed too much of the fun. Pike, a British actress perhaps known best for Jack Reacher, gets the role of a lifetime with Amy, and she devours it. Affleck shows what’s been true all along in his career: He’s a fine actor capable of great nuance and a movie star of the highest order.

Horns

Harry Potter goes over to the dark side in Horns, a nasty little movie from director Alexandre Aja, maker of Piranha 3D and the decent remake effort, The Hills Have Eyes. Danielle Radcliffe plays Ig, accused of killing his girlfriend Merrin (Juno Temple) after an ugly breakup. Not too long after this event, Ig starts sprouting horns out of his head, much to his chagrin. When people see these horns, they behave rather badly, but they also have a hard time lying. So Ig uses the horns to not only bring out the worst in people, but to start solving the mystery of his lover’s death. Radcliffe is great here, using a strong American accent and getting a nice chance to let his nasty side come out. Temple is adorable as Merrin, her story told in flashbacks and leaving no mystery as to why Ig is so messed up after the loss. Joe Anderson is good as Ig’s musician brother, strung out on drugs and hiding a few secrets. James Remar, David Morse and Kathleen Quinlan all make their marks in supporting roles. The movie is a hard R, with crazy violence. Mommies and daddies, don’t let your

kids watch this one, no matter how much they want to see the new flick from the Harry Potter guy. As a mystery, the movie is a complete failure in that it is obvious early on who did the killing. It doesn’t matter, because the film is very strong as a horror comedy. It’s Aja’s most fully realized film to date, and it’s arguable that it contains Radcliffe’s best performance. (Available for rent on VOD, iTunes and Amazon.com during a limited theatrical release).

John Wick

The latest Keanu Reeves vehicle is a true stunner. It boasts a high body count, and offers cinematic proof that you shouldn’t mess with a man’s best friend. In the film’s opening moments, we learn that the title character (Reeves) has lost his wife, and he’s taking it justifiably hard. After a member of the Russian mob kills his dog and steals his car, we find out that Wick is a former assassin with guns and gold buried in his floor. The loss of his ride and canine friend are enough to make him spring back into action, and he does so in spectacular fashion thanks to Reeves and directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, both making their debuts. Stahelski has actually been a Reeves stunt double many times, including the Matrix films, Constantine and Point Break. The familiarity with each other pays off, because the stunt sequences and choreography are flawless. In the pantheon of action movie directing debuts, this one stands very tall. Willem Dafoe makes a nice mark in a few scenes as a double-crossing hitman. Adrianne Palicki, the actress who was supposed to be Wonder Woman until NBC saw the pilot and puked, shows action movie chops as another gun-for-hire that can’t be trusted.

This is a great-looking movie that mixes in some strong emotions with its awesome set pieces.

It’s nice to see Keanu Reeves back in the saddle.

Now, with the success of this film, perhaps somebody will finally greenlight Bill and Ted 3.

Ouija

Hasbro gets another movie touting one of its products (along with Transformers and Battleship), and this is by far the worst, if that is even possible. Laine and Debbie (Olivia Cooke and Shelley Hennig) have been playing with a Ouija board since they were kids. Debbie plays solo in her house alone when they get older, and winds up dead, hanging herself with a string of plugged in Christmas lights that, mysteriously, don’t unplug under the stress of her weight pulling on them, but we won’t go into that right now.

Laine and her friends start playing with the Ouija after Debbie’s death, and they discover that there are spirits living in Debbie’s house, and they had something to do with Debbie’s death.

Maybe one of them pulled on the middle of the strand of Christmas lights while she was hanging herself, thus relieving some of the tension and preventing them from becoming unplugged? Oh wait, I’m sorry, I pledged not to go into that. The wannabe scares in the PG-13 outing consist of fake-outs and people behind doors, the kind of stuff you will see coming if you’ve seen, say, one horror movie in your lifetime. If that is in fact true, don’t make this your second one, for you will wind up disappointed.

St. Vincent

Vincent (Bill Murray), a reclusive, crotchety old guy, reluctantly finds himself interacting with his new neighbor, Maggie (Melissa McCarthy), and her son, Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher), after her movers break his fence, tree and car. Vincent eventually winds up babysitting Oliver, which leads to them bonding at the racetrack and inside bars, and hanging out with a “lady of the night” (Naomi Watts), much to the eventual chagrin of Maggie. Murray and Lieberher are great together, which allows you to forgive the sometimes schmaltzy direction and writing from Theodore Melfi. Vincent is the meatiest role Murray has gotten in almost a decade, and it’s exciting to see him firing on all cylinders. Recently, I have been complaining about McCarthy getting stuck in mostly insulting slapstick roles. This movie gives her a chance to show off the fact that she can really act, and she makes the most of it. Lieberher is one of those child actors who seems like he’s been acting for 30 years, well beyond the amount of time he has spent on this Earth. Watts takes the pregnant Russian prostitute role and runs with it, getting some good laughs through a wildly overdone accent. They all put this one over the top with their performances.

Makes perfect Up Against It Chuck Reyome is the manager of the Musician Rehearsal Center (MRC), a place where local bands and musicians by Marina Palmieri go to rehearse. The Sparks building is open for rehearsals 24/7 with video surveillance around the clock.

MRC has 50 practice rooms with sound-dampened walls, as well as a 2,000-square-feet room, known as “Center Stage,” with a 26-by-16 feet stage, equipped with professional lighting and sound.

“There are a lot of places that are like this, but we have heard none of them are as clean,” said Reyome. “We’re not the be-all, end-all, but we like to think we’re the top of the line here.”

Four years after opening, MRC is at capacity and is home to nearly 50 bands. One of these bands is the punk/metal band, Up Against It. The band consist of five guys—Reyome on lead guitar, Randy Granata on vocals, Jonathan “J5” Hodges on guitar, Steve Freeman on bass, and Oscar Ozuna on drums. The musicians have been playing together since June 2012.

Just two weeks after Reyome and Granata joined the band, the group played its first show.

Up against it performs with Buckcherry and Seasons of insanity on thurs., nov. 13, at Cargo in the Whitney Peak hotel, 255 n.

“The Alley actually gave us our first real venue break back in the day,” said Freeman. “Our first show was a little off the hook a little bit— actually the first show was not too bad at all for these two only being with us for two weeks.”

The band members have worked well together from the start—from playing their first show with little rehearsal and new members, to everyone contributing to the songwriting process.

“The beautiful thing about it is we all like different styles of music, so we have this huge collage of music,” said Granata.

They try not to turn down anyone’s ideas during the writing process, despite their different tastes in music. They play everything from punk rock to heavy metal to melodic metal.

“The best way you ever learn how to play is you play every fucking style,” said Hodges. On top of writing and playing their music, they’re also in charge of their own promotions and tickets sales.

“It’s harder that way, but I think it’s better—it’s the nucleus of us all,” said Reyome. The band members say they’re willing to put in the time and extra effort needed so that no outsiders are involved in promotion and ticket sales. They say no one tells them what to do or where to play.

“Who knows us better than us?” asked Freeman.

Up Against It will perform on Thursday, Nov. 13, at Cargo in the Whitney Peak Hotel with Buckcherry and Seasons of Insanity.

The band’s set will be a collection of original songs. This will be one of their last shows for a while so they can focus on writing new music.

“I think what has happened, though, is on this promotion machine, it has been practice, show, practice, show for the last year,” said Reyome. “We really haven’t had time to make new shit up.”

They plan to be back with new music and shows in Spring 2015.

In the meantime, the band will be working on new material at the MRC in Sparks. Ω

Scold rush I try to be direct, but my girlfriend often sees this as meanness. For example, when we’re out to dinner, she sometimes takes forever to order when the server is standing right there. I’ll call her out on this—tell her she was rude to keep the guy waiting. Personally, I think it’s unhealthy in the long run to keep quiet about issues, but my girlfriend gets upset whenever I give her constructive criticism. How can I convince her that she’s being too sensitive?

There are times when directness is best. Like if you’re an air traffic controller. What’s important is not that you make the pilot feel supported in his life goals but that he brings the plane to a stop on the runway instead of in some lady’s pool.

It just depends. As long as you don’t run into any issues with things, you can usually have one built in three to four hours. We go by the request of the customer. If they are like, “Oh, my god, my computer is completely dead. I’m dying without it.

I need this quick hurry, hurry,” we can usually bump it up a little. It also depends how busy we are, so if we are really backed up with jobs, we’ll tell you. We will never take on a job until we tell you, ‘Hey we got this many people ahead of you, and it could take a few days.’ You also have to consider time to order the parts if needed, so it could take about a week for a customer. What does the business offer?

We can fix any computer, PCs or Macs. We can build any computer, we do costume builds, we usually ask the costumers what they plan on using the computer for, then give them recommendations for a build. As for the gaming, we have PlayStation rooms and Xbox rooms.

We have 8 to 10 games for the computers.

We have 12 for the PlayStation4. The Xbox1, unfortunately, doesn’t have as many. That’s because a lot of these are specific for the PS4, but it looks like we have eight for the Xbox1. We do plan on investing in more games as we move forward with the business.

Three month paradise Any of you fine funky Neon Babylonians remember a sinful little hot spot back in ’83 called the Voodoo Lounge?

Ah yes, the Voodoo. These days what used to be the old Voodoo is a Christian establishment called Faith Alive at 120 Hubbard Way just east of the Peppermill. But back in ’83, Faith Alive was a hedonistic performing arts place called The Space Theater, and its director was a wonderful cool cat named Ed Gilweit. The back half of the building was this huge empty barn of a warehouse, and Ed wanted to do something positive with it. I suggested it would make a great place to have dance parties, sell drinks and ogle lithe young females.

Ed, mischievous rascal to the core, didn’t need much of an arm twist.

My partner in DJ crime was the late laughaholic Harry Reynolds, our GM was a gent who still has a decent reputation in this town so I’ll just call him Zeppo, and our sound man was a guy named Mike Smith who had a monster system that he loved showing off. Bingo. In March we opened. In

Not generally, because most of the people that come in here have PS3 or Xbox 360 and the games are not backwards compatible.

How long do kids usually come and play for? Do you have a time limit on it?

Why did you get started with this business?

We actually decided to start this business because we are all gamers, and we love playing games, and we are also a bunch of computer nerds. We wanted to give parents a break on the cost of gaming because it can become expensive. Most kids in this day and age can beat a game in a few hours, and those games are $60 a pop. Some of them are a little more than that—it just depends. We wanted to cut them some slack and provide a gaming environment for the gamers in this town.

We did the computer side because these computer shops in this town are ripping people off with their $95 labor rates.

Why are you raking people over coals?

Just because they can’t fix their own computer? That’s not right.

Do you allow people to bring in their own games?

May we closed. It wasn’t due to lack of interest.

After the third weekend the crowds got respectable. The buzz was good about our new place— spacious room, cheap drinks, crazy loud music, and a parking lot where … well, remember this was ’83. There were a lot of snowstorms in that parking lot. Quite frosty out there with Bolivian nostril spackle being liberally applied to proboscoid membranes of those seeking enhanced dance thrills and such.

Harry and I wanted to bombard folks with all this swingin’ new wave energized Talking Heads, Blondie, Elvis Costello stuff. Very quickly we outhipped every other club in town.

No brag, just fact. The modern scene was there for the taking. We took it.

Reno’s punks would show up—all 9 of ’em—wanting the Dead Kennedys and The Clash. We gave it to ’em. The hot babes would show up and they wanted Thriller. Always the Michael.

Harry and I weren’t proud. If it got the girls on the dance floor we’d fire up the goddamn “Billie Jean.” WTF.

YOUR HEALTH SHOULDN’T DEPEND ON YOUR INCOME.

By the end of April we were one smokin’ club rollin’ til 5 a.m. every Friday and Saturday night.

Draggin’ our bones outta there at dawn, headed to Landrum’s to do battle with Daisy and her toxic omelettes. But Zeppo saw the writing on the wall, that sooner rather than later we were going to attract some attention. Some RPD kind of attention. He suggested that we calmly and quietly just kinda shut the place down. For a while, anyway.

We knew he was right. And so just as the VL was beginning to make it, we faded to black in a very proactive way. “A while” became … forever. But for those three months, man, we did indeed conjure up a bit of voodoo. In a completely unrelated coincidence, the Rolling Stones released an album in ’94 called ... Voodoo Lounge! Always nice to get Keithoid validation. Ω
