America’s tiny empire

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

OK, I’ll admit it. I could not give less of a damn about this midterm election.

I shuddered as I typed those words. The vast, vast majority of decisions are a comparison of brown to tan.

The most exciting race we had this election was the mayor’s primary, and it was just exciting because it was a kind of a freakshow. Pretty obvious even at the time that the “people’s” candidates could never compete with the business candidates or professional politicians. And it wasn’t just fundraising, it was ego. There can be no coalition or compromise when the ego is the fundamental engine driving a movement. “Oh, yeah, just back me, and we’ll accomplish our goals” never works.

So watch. I’m going out on a limb here, doing something that journalists should never do. I’m making a prediction. In every decision that matters, the side that has the most money will win. For example, I’ve got very little hope for Question 3 because the money that benefits both from a less educated populace and from the marginal profit increase got behind its defeat. Corporations fought pro-education reform all across this country.

I just don’t get it. Honestly, I’ve been thinking about the reasons for intransigence for 52 years now. Why do we let the nuts rule us? Why do we let the most close-minded, uneducated ... nuts ruin our children’s lives and futures? Ours? My kid went to a good school, but the majority of people’s kids in Washoe County did not.

Elon Musk’s five kids will get good educations, but it’s unlikely they’ll go to Nevada public schools. Likewise, when all those rich businesspeople were complaining about the Washoe School Board, I’ve really got to wonder how many of their children are in Nevada’s public schools.

There’s no individual finanicial profit in the greater good, and thinking consumes resources. There’s a fundamental social law in those two facts, and if it weren’t so depressingly banal, I’d figure out a way to say it succinctly.

Re “Age of Empire” (Feature story, Oct. 9): It’s hard to take seriously anything that Jake Highton has to say when the very first sentence of his “Age of Empire” article is wrong. And not just by a little bit. The largest empire the world has ever seen in terms of land area is the Mongol Empire, which dwarfs anything seen in the last 500 years. The largest in terms of people and land under one leader is easily the Victorian era British Empire, the one famously commemorated by the phrase “the Sun never sets on the British Empire.” It controlled Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, huge tracts of Africa. Yes, the U.S. has “bases” all over the place. They don’t hold a candle to countries, though. It is interesting to see his progressive dogma come to the fore. His assertion that the effort to stifle the Soviet and Chinese revolutions were “thankfully” foiled.

I submit the 20 to 40 million people murdered under Stalin’s rule, and the 60 to 80 million murdered under Mao’s rule would not agree.

American war machine Re “Age of Empire” (Feature story, Oct. 9): It seems that the author of this article left out the European wars against Germany.

In 1914 the U.S. found it profitable to sell war material to England and France on credit. When it seemed that Germany could win, the U.S. had to send in American troops to make sure the alliance—U.S., England and France—would win. After the investments were secure the U.S. troops left Europe. The peace treaty was left to England and France. The following Polish Corridor, which isolated East Prussia, became the cause for the war of 1939 because Poland would not grant access to that province. As for the damage done to Germany in the two wars, we count 10 million dead, including 4 million noncombatants, and the loss of one third of territory, which crippled German industry and left

Not all Boomers Re “Your generation” (Editorial, Oct. 9): As a member of the so called “boomer” generation, I take issue with the editorial “Your generation.” Maybe the editorial board should consider that for the past 30 years, wages have been stagnant for 99 percent of our citizens, with almost all of the economic gains of the country going to the top 1 percent. The vast majority of boomers are not 1-percenters. The 99 percent, including both boomers and millennials, are pretty much in the same boat. When Congress and the media have been, for the most part, bought by the power brokers of the U.S., the system is rigged. The guiding principle of the economic elites as been “A rising economic tide lifts all yachts.”

Internecine conflict, one generation pitted against another, is being used as a tool by the 1-percenters to divide voters and deflect hostility from themselves; Don’t drink their Kool-aid. The boomer generation is not the enemy.

The problem with tenure Re “Age of Empire” (Feature story, Oct. 9): I enjoy reading the Reno News & Review and appreciate the variety of opinions it presents. However, I was shocked and appalled by the anti-American, pro-communist article “The Age of Empire.” I looked at the end of the piece to see who the author was, and was even more horrified to see it was by a professor emeritus of journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno. Lying liars Re “Just say yes” (Editorial, Oct. 23): There is a critical flaw in the sample ballot concerning Question 3, the Education Initiative. The opponents’ argument against the Initiative includes a quote, “This 2% ‘Margin Tax’ would be on gross revenues.”

This is not true. Section 22.1 of the Initiative refers to “2 percent of the taxable margin.” No business would pay 2 percent of its gross revenue.

The taxable margin is the amount remaining after subtracting generous exemptions and deductions from gross revenues.

The opponents’ consultant, Applied Analysis, estimates that average tax liability would be 0.35 percent of gross revenue, considering exemptions, deductions and the Modified Business Tax credit. Opponents’ language overstates the impact of the tax by a factor of six (2/0.35).

The erroneous language has caused businesses and voters to unjustly fear the measure. One relieved Nevada business owner says, “I now support Q3, knowing that the tax is 2 percent on taxable margin, and not on gross revenue.”

Q3’s opponents have used this erroneous language in their debates, on their website, and in their literature.

Voters should consider the correct amount of the tax and the lack of truthfulness in the opponents’ campaign.

World War II as the sole example of a 20th century war in which U.S. leadership was on the right side. The reality is a lot less clear-cut than most of us would wish.

In the interval between the world wars, most of the powerful capitalists here and abroad openly sympathized with the European fascist movements, due to fascist suppression of labor unionism. In the 1930s, there was an attempt to engineer a coup that would have replaced FDR with a businessfriendly dictator. Another capitalist effort was far more successful. In the immediate aftermath of World War I, Wall Street founded and bankrolled the American Legion. Legionnaires were told that union organizers threatened “the American way of life,” were issued baseball bats, and sent out to beat—and on occasion, lynch—striking workers. As late as 1930, the Legion invited Benito Mussolini to speak at the Legion’s annual convention.

Tellingly, when the Legion was founded there, was already a legitimate organization of veterans—the Veterans of Foreign Wars. It is important not to confuse the two organizations. The 1918 Legion was what we today would recognize as an “astroturf” movement.

Currently, there are efforts to rehabilitate its image—and Legionnaires no longer attack strikers—but the historical record is quite clear.

As the possibility of massive U.S. involvement in a Second World War loomed, well-connected businessmen realized that involvement on this scale would offer enormous profits from immense government military contracting and other spending. With the prospect of reaping these enormous “cost-plus” contracts, on the eve of war the large capitalists changed their tune and became strident anti-Nazis—at least publicly.

As for the war in the Pacific, it was never about anything more profound than a contest for the “right” to dominate Pacific and East Asian trade.

Certainly the U.S. had no interest in promoting democracy or self-determination in the region, as the hapless citizens of Hawaii or the Philippines had already learned the hard way—Hawaii in 1893, the Phillippines in 1902.

Election Endorsements (Again) Every election, the Reno News & Review makes recommendations for voters who are too lazy to do the minimum of research for themselves. We base our recommendations on our own coverage, other media reports, and in some cases, information the candidates submit to be included on our voters page. It’s all about the kids. Yeah. Right.

It’s likely the most under-appreciated elected position in our community and yet it has the most direct influence over our children’s lives.

In 2014, the Washoe County School Board had a very bad year. Its trustees were caught up in a controversy of their own making when by they ousted Superintendent Pedro Sheila Leslie Martinez, incurring the wrath of the business sector, Latino organizations and many parents. It all stemmed from a one-day emotional debacle on July 22 with little regard for transparency and the open meeting law, resulting in a $500,000 separation agreement with Martinez and hefty personal fines for trustees.

Now it’s time for voters in District C and District F to choose their representatives on the school board for the next four years. Unfortunately, the controversy has overshadowed the most pressing issues in public education: bottom-of-the-barrel funding, school safety, and ensuring our children are prepared for the future.

the school board, Barbara Clark, and her challenger, Nick Smith.

Clark has been demonized by defenders of Martinez, including the Reno Gazette-Journal, for her role in the fiasco. She refuses to talk about the details, citing the mediated agreement between Martinez and the school board to avoid “maligning” each other.

Meanwhile, we don’t know much about Nick Smith beyond his graduation from a local high school in 2004.

He does have two young children attending school in the district, and a job as the manager of a Sizzler restaurant.

As the board president, Clark bears extra responsibility for the actions taken on July 22 and the costly aftermath. It’s disturbing that her comments don’t seem to indicate she’s taken responsibility for her role in the madness. She’s defensive and emotional, insisting “the day got out of control for both parties.”

At the same time, the selfrighteous indignation of business leaders is offensive, as they throw

less the candidates’ positions on any of them.

In District F, the choice is clearer.

Veronica Frenkel is a strong candidate with a relevant background and a daughter in the district. She’s run a solid campaign, offering sophisticated positions on school safety, workforce readiness and student achievement.

Former County Commissioner and Sparks City Council member Jim Shaw is the other candidate in District F. He has a long local history as a professional educator and elected official but has said little about any issue of significance in education.

If I lived in District F, I’d happily vote for Frenkel, and give the School Board some much needed new energy from a tenacious and articulate education advocate.

If I lived in District C, even though I’m disappointed in her leadership, I’d choose Clark over Smith. I’d vote against the business bullies and their arrogant attitude that only they know what’s best for our kids. Ω

a never-ending collective tantrum, following Clark to voter forums to verbally harangue her. They threaten to fund a recall effort if voters don’t follow their directive and boot Clark out. They’re backing Smith for no discernable reason except that he’s not Clark.

The Reno Gazette-Journal has sided with the Chamber of Commerce, calling—in a front-page editorial—for the six members of the School Board involved in the debacle to resign and dedicating their coverage of the election to this one issue.

In a recent article profiling the four candidates, the picture of Michonne Ascuaga nagging Clark at a candidate forum is more than twice as big as the candidates’ photos. The article focuses heavily on the open meeting controversy, neglecting to mention the candidates’ stands on issues of major importance to public education. Charter schools, vouchers, capital needs, collective bargaining, bullying, school violence, sex education, common core—none of these issues are mentioned, much

Beware election fear-mongering Every day is Halloween around Election Day. There is a monster under every bed, and only Republicans or Democrats can save you. Politicians are at their fear-mongering best around elections, and this election is being painted as even more scary than most.

KKFT talk radio host Rick by Brendan Roberts in the last few weeks has Trainor advocated, among other things, putting every Muslim in America on a watch list, banning all air travel from West Africa, linking a Midwest upsurge in back-to-school flu to the refugee children from Central America, calling for further militarization of the police, and sealing off the Mexican border because we are being infiltrated by ISIS terrorists infected with Ebola carrying Korans and prayer rugs. But, not to worry, he does not believe in black helicopters. That would be so 1990!

If you are going to call yourself a constitutional conservative, at least mention you mean the North Korean constitution.

The incumbent Democratic candidate for governor of Colorado is alienating voters by calling the legalization of marijuana that over 55 percent of them voted for “reckless.”

In California and elsewhere liberal anti-male animus has led to politically correct Salem witch trials where students accused of rape have to prove their innocence to a hostile academic tribunal. The only way to do this with a notarized consent form (YES MEANS YES) signed by the accuser acknowledging that she affirmatively said YES in advance to every sexual escalation from first base to home. The new Scarlet Letter is expulsion from the overpriced institution they went into crippling debt to attend.

Global warming alarmists in 2014 continue to predict worldwide calamity from economic activity despite there being no measurable warming for 18 years. Liberal scientists and politicians declared the debate over and call skeptical fellow scientists “deniers.” Once smeared as Nazi traitors to the planet, the next rhetorical

step is to send these skeptics to prison after a “Nuremberg trial.”

Harry Reid led Senate Democrats on a vote to repeal the First Amendment out of hatred for the Koch Brothers and the Supreme Court who upheld the right to political speech without advance permission from the state. The only exemption was for “the press,” defined as organized and mainstream.

Bloggers, YouTubers and mavericks like myself who speak out would do so at their own risk. Fortunately, their proposed Constitutional Amendment did not pass.

The Center for Disease Continuance and Proliferation (CDC) is under fire for its lack of training for the nurses in Dallas who contracted Ebola from Thomas Duncan, who arrived there on a flight from Brussels, not Liberia.

When one of the nurses told the CDC she had a fever but wanted to fly to Cleveland, they said, “Sure, go ahead.” The CDC has more procedures preventing secondhand smoke in hospitals than it does on what it

is supposed to prevent: the spread of actual infectious diseases. The politician’s solution: create a CDC “swat team,” and appoint a political hack with no medical background the new “Ebola Czar.”

American faith in government is at an all-time low. Government promises to protect us from every inflated threat largely of its own making but continues to fail miserably. After every failure, from 9-11 to ISIS, from campus rape to teenage sexting, from economic collapse to the slowest recovery since the 1930s, they demand (and usually get) more power and money that comes at citizens’ expense. Go ahead and vote red or blue, but remember if elections could actually change anything, they wouldn’t be legal.

SOS race highlights voter ID issue Republican secretary of state candidate Barbara Cegavske still supports requiring Nevadans to present identification at the polls in order to vote, a proposal she offered as a state legislator.

Her opponent, Democrat Kate Marshall, opposes the idea on grounds that voter identification systems are expensive and unnecessary.

In 2007, Cegavske sponsored Senate Bill 385 to implement such a program. She also cosponsored a similar 2009 measure, S.B. 315.

In the years since, voter ID programs have gained a reputation for preventing pro-Democratic voters, like senior citizens who no longer drive and low income people, from voting. In public meetings this year Cegavske said she still supports such a proposal.

Cegavske said in 2007 that her reason for introducing her bill was, “I talked to poll workers who say they have no idea if the person that comes forward is who they say they are. No checks and balances.” (“A solution without a problem,” RN&R, March 29, 2007.)

Poll workers are volunteers who work on Election Day for a one-day stipend. But election officials, who are more familiar with the voting process, said that voter fraud is very rare in Nevada.

“The underlying truth is we don’t have people sneaking in and trying to vote, whether they’re citizens or not citizens,” said then-Washoe voter registrar Dan Burk when Cegavske’s bill was being processed.

“And the last thing that a person who is not a bona fide citizen of our country wants to do is possibly get themselves in a felony situation.”

His successor, Luanne Cutler, also says fraud is nearly unknown.

Voter fraud is usually committed on the counting end, not the voting end, and there are no studies that show wide fraud of the type that would be prevented by voter identification (“The fraud of voter fraud,” RN&R, Oct. 25, 2012). Virtually all instances cited as evidence of voter fraud are rare individual cases, not studies showing widespread fraud or patterns of fraud, which is why most voter identification advocates rely on anecdotes. In most of those examples, fraudulent votes were prevented, not cast.

Nevadans must provide identification to register to vote. After that, election officials say, the real problem is getting people to vote at all.

Nevada’s secretary of state has nothing to do with running elections, but can prescribe the rules for county officials who do.

Currently in Ohio, there is an ongoing scandal over Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted using rulemaking authority to implement “every rule imaginable to impede the voting of people not like him,” as Newsweek’s Kurt Eichenwald put it.

Panic attack Gov. Brian Sandoval last week appointed a Nevada Ebola Virus advisory task force. It was scheduled to hold its first meeting this week, by north/south teleconference. There is apparently no budget for the group. The task force is advisory.

Meanwhile, Vox reported that the Consumer Product Safety Commission says 30 people die each year in run-ins with their furniture, making household furniture a greater threat to life in the United States than the Ebola virus.

In a YouGov survey of 1,000 US adults interviewed October 15-16, 2014, 45 percent said they considered flu a more serious threat than Ebola. Forty percent named Ebola as the more serious.

A Washoe County Health Department statement reads in part, “People should remain calm. Ebola is not airborne and cannot be passed that way. It requires immediate contact with an Ebola victim, or body fluids. Because influenza symptoms are similar to Ebola symptoms, the more people [who] get a flu shot and reduce their chance of catching the flu, the fewer people will be reporting flu symptoms and causing potential strain on our healthcare system and possible concerns about Ebola. In the U.S., we’ve had one Ebola death and two additional cases, but every year tens of thousands of people die from flu or complications due to the flu. There is no vaccine for Ebola, but there is for flu.”

A report last month by Passport Health said that Nevada has the worst vaccination rate in the nation.

The party’s over Assembly candidates uncomfortable with political parties When reading the campaign material of the incumbent Democrat, Mike Sprinkle, in Assembly District 30, by the thing that jumps out is what’s Dennis Myers not there—the words Democrat or Democratic. He said he’s heard about that absence from people when he walks door to door in the district.

“It’s not that I’m embarrassed, but for me, when I’m an elected official, I’m representing everybody, and I’m open to everybody’s views,” Sprinkle said.

If he feels conflicted about his party, he’s not the only one.

His Republican opponent, Lauren Scott, has posted an explanation of where she is on the matter:

Sprinkle: Higher education has a role.

“In 2009, I became disenchanted with both political parties, and I registered as non-partisan.

Non-partisan candidates rarely win election and I could not, in all good conscience, run for office as a Democrat. Although we share many of the same ideals when it comes to social issues and human rights, I tend to disagree with the Democrats on issues of taxation and business development. I registered as a Republican for the first time in 2011. I will work with

both parties to identify and reduce wasteful government spending and pursue initiatives to give small business owners the tools they need to get Nevada working again.”

In other words, the candidates feel a lot like most voters when it comes to political parties. But when asked what would be their priorities at the legislature, the candidates have different interests.

Scott has an endorsement from Nevada’s Republican governor and her issue stances tend to be right of center. She is supportive of alternative energy sources but objects to some of the approaches used in Nevada, as when the legislature required power companies to supply certain percentages of power from alternatives.

“In our energy policy, I would have mandates removed,” she said.

“We have mandates pushed by Democratic policymakers.

“We’re paying higher energy rates as a result, and that drives away business to states where rates are cheaper. I’m a supporter of alternatives but not of mandates.

Let the market decide what is the best mix. Mandates are a big mistake.”

In education, she believes that “vocational is more useful,” in part because it is a way of supplying the kind of workers corporations moving to the state seek.

“There are faster ways to get people working,” she said. “We need to get them retrained, retooled and back to work. We have faculty at UNR making over a million dollars a year. That has little effect on my district, which has working people and skilled labor.”

Besides energy and vocational training, Scott said she would hope to do something about tax fairness.

“Looking at fiscal policy and taxes, we have an outdated tax base, very narrow.”

She said studies like the Price Waterhouse/Urban Institute study of Nevada taxation have called for changes.

However, state legislators have been relatively indifferent to issues of fairness in taxation in the past, preferring to focus on something that can get through the Legislature and will work.

“And I think that’s changing,” she said. “I think the governor is taking the lead. But my primary focus is to get the economy moving and get the economy moving through business development and job creation.”

Incumbent Sprinkle said he had “a pretty successful session last session” that helped him build relationships with other legislators, which will aid his district.

“Every single one of the bills I sponsored went through,” he said.

“That’s a 100 percent score.”

He said he will continue an interest he already followed in his first session.

“Human trafficking is an important personal issue for me that I’ve seen as a paramedic,” he said. “I want to establish an account that funds services for victims.”

He has asked the bill drafting division of the legislature to have a measure drawn up for him creating new increased penalties for crimes associated with human trafficking.

In another field, Sprinkle said he wants legislation to shift emphasis from subsidizing new corporations to come to Nevada to helping already existing businesses.

“Any existing business willing to come into the community and give money to the local higher education system should be able to get a tax abatement,” he said.

He puts greater value on higher education as a way of helping the economy than Scott, talking about a “more educated work force” that can fuel economic growth.

Finally, he has plans for a program to deal with cruelty to animals—using counseling to intervene with people who hurt animals because “it’s frequently a precursor to them going on to hurting humans.” The existing penalties against cruelty to animals would still be in place, but a counseling requirement would be added on.

(Those penalties were increased at the 2011 Nevada Legislature.)

Sprinkle pointed to SPRINKLE the case in August of a man killing several dogs at a south Reno motel, and Las Vegas animal advocates point to Carroll Cole, the first person executed by lethal injection in Nevada (for a double murder/rape), who reportedly abused animals as a child. But the scholarship may be less conclusive. A review of the available studies for the Bulletin of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law found, “Research reports in the literature

are inconsistent and inconclusive regarding a possible relationship between animal cruelty and aggression against people. Although a single act is not predictive of another act, a pattern of substantial animal abuse may conceivably be associated with a pattern of recurrent violence directed against people.”

Scott: Vocational will help the district more In any event, the counseling might help prevent further abuse of animals, no matter the effect on human interactions.

Sprinkle’s incumbency seems not to bother Scott, who said she has been at the last three legislatures as an activist. She also sits on the Nevada Equal Rights Commission, appointed by Gov. Sandoval.

District 30 takes in a portion of Sun Valley in the north, then drops down to include the Rock/Oddie area in Sparks. From there it sweeps east taking in Sparks from downtown all the way to the eastern edge of the city.

It also drops farther south to include neighborhoods that nearly encircle the airport. Ω

Local environmental nonprofit celebrates 25 years Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful has been cleaning up trash, removing invasive weeds, and improving the overall quality of outdoor spaces in the Truckee Meadows for a quarter century this year, and they’ve got no by Sage Leehey intention of quitting anytime soon.

Saturday, Oct. 25, was Make a Difference Day—the nation’s largest s age l@ community service day—and it’s annually one of KTMB’s larger volunnews review.c om teer events. This year, KTMB had over 200 volunteers remove about a ton of trash, and seven tons of weeds in six parks located throughout Washoe County. Volunteers also restored trails, cleaned a beach and pruned trees, among other tasks.

In previous years, KTMB’s cleanups have focused more on trash pick up, but the current drought has altered their focus slightly.

“Of course, volunteers were still picking up trash, but our concentration this year has been on removing weeds,” said KTMB communications manager J Merriman. “With the Truckee River so low, water quality has been an important issue, and weeds have a detrimental effect on water quality.”

In celebration of their 25 years, KTMB launched a campaign called #25for25. They’re asking volunteers and community members to ask 25 friends to donate $25 to the organization, and they hosted 25 events throughout the year. They also celebrated with their 25th Anniversary Silver Celebration at Great Basin Taps & Tanks Wednesday evening.

KTMB also hosts clean-ups of illegal dump sites and combats illegal dumping in the area with education projects throughout the year. This year, they were able to expand their Adopt-A-Spot program to help with this. The Adopt-A-Spot program allows businesses and other groups to “adopt” an area to keep clean. Previously, this program was available mainly for park and roadway areas.

“Including river areas in our Adopt-A-Spot program will really allow businesses and organizations to get hands-on in maintaining this vital community resource, and raise awareness about the issues we face at the same time.”

In the education category, KTMB is adding a river unit to their Waste Warriors curriculum used in area schools.

“We’re really excited to be working on educating all facets of our community about the importance of river health, as well as doing the cleanups,” Merriman said. “Clean-ups are wonderful, but our goal going forward is to make those clean-ups unnecessary because no one’s letting their trash escape or dumping because they know the hazards and alternatives.” Ω OPINION

James Hulse has written. White ignorance of the Great Basin in which the newly arrived lived is indicated by the fact that the mob probably attacked the wrong tribe, since the rescue party was likely Bannock, not Paiute. At Pyramid, the tribe let the group trap itself, then decimated it.

WhiTe r ighTs On May 7, 1860, white men at Williams Station on the Carson River kidnapped Native American girls, raped them, then imprisoned them in a dirt cellar. Tribal members rescued them, then burned the station to the ground. A ragtag white mob— led, sort of, by William Ormsby— then attacked the Pyramid Lake Paiutes, the nearest tribe. “In many cases, the ‘soldiers’ were simply overzealous young men, ready to steal horses and kidnap women,” historian

After that defeat, the whites were bailed out by regular U.S. Army troops, who followed the Powell Doctrine and used overwhelming force to put down the Paiutes, whose warriors held off the soldiers while elders, women, and children escaped, all of them possibly still wondering what it was all about.

Thus ended the battles to protect the right of white men to molest tribal children. But in another sense, it did not end there. As Hulse wrote, “The events of Pyramid Lake had decisively established the domination of the white man in the western Great Basin.”

Tribes had spent a millennium hunting, fishing, gathering around the Great Basin. In the mid-1800s they found themselves confined to reservations.

Food became a problem. Whites settling the West believed in farming with an intensity that resembled an organized religion. Nevada was a desert state, but whites were not dissuaded. A pseudo-science invented by believers in desert reclamation (creating farmland by diverting water into the desert) claimed that “rain follows the plow”—that is, rainfall increased where agriculture was introduced. Geological and Geographic Survey of the Territories filed an 1871 report: “It is believed … that the planting of 10 or 15 acres of forest-trees on each quarter section will have a most important effect on the climate, equalizing and increasing the moisture and adding greatly to the fertility of the soil.” It was silly, but whites were not inclined to listen to the experts—the tribes—about the land of the Great Basin. (White geologists also told reclamationists the water was inadequate, but people of faith and dogma did not listen to science about reclamation any better than they do now about climate change.)

It wasn’t that tribal members didn’t know how to farm. In 1872, wheat grown on the Pyramid Lake reservation had 7-inch-long heads, and there were plans to display them at the California State Fair.

In 1883, a Paiute rancher named Naches harvested the wheat at his Lovelock ranch and had it milled at Kemler’s mill, receiving 40 sacks of flour, which he distributed among his tribe’s members who assisted him.

The Mormons”—what is now Nevada was then a part of Utah—“now settle where they please in the Utah and Pah-Utah country, without extinction of Indian title, and without objection from the Government; but I prefer to follow the old policy of buying from the Indians, as being more just in itself, and more for the peace and safety of the settlers.”

Native Westerners held land in common, no one member holding title. Of course, leaders could always be bribed, or killed, or—worst of all—ignored into impotence.

he first known white to enter the Great Basin, Jedediah Smith, arrived in 1826. Mountain men like him were not much of a threat to residents. Like the residents, they lived lightly on the land and brought only the weaponry they used to feed themselves. But their arrival was a warning of things to come.

John C. Fremont was not as benign. He did bring weaponry. In fact, when some residents north of the present site of Nevada displeased him, he and his force attacked a local community, Dokdokwas, and wiped it off the face of the earth, akin to Hitler’s destruction of Lidice. Fremont probably targeted the wrong community—Modoc instead of his intended Klamath—but war crimes were not prosecuted in those days.

If communications then had existed as they do now, Great Basin residents might have seen what was coming. Seven years after the massacre, U.S. Rep. Thomas Hart Benton— Fremont’s father in law—penned a letter to his fellow Missourians calling for a highway from his state to California, cutting straight across Nevada: “The Indian title should be extinguished where necessary, and the preemption system universally

Basin did not sustain farming. More than a century after it was created, the whites’ vaunted desert reclamation showcase, the Newlands Project, has yet to reach half the acreage originally planned.

Other problems with food involved pine nuts and fish. In desert terrain, both were not just food sources but, after the whites came, tribal industries.

The pine nuts were essential to the tribal diet, and soon after the arrival of the whites, the sources were under attack. Mining consumed pine trees rapidly. “Cut down all pine nuts” was a complaint heard by whites in an angry September 1864 confrontation with armed and mounted men in the Reese River country. In 1880, a Grand Council of the Washo asked state and federal officials to stop the destruction of the pine nut trees. During a particularly hard winter in 1885, the New York Times reported, “Almost their sole means of subsistence has been pine nuts, fish from Pyramid Lake, and rabbits, latterly the only game on the reservation.” Sarah Winnemucca told the Times, “My people are utterly destitute, and numbers of them are famishing in the snow.”

White indifference did not deter the tribes, which kept plugging away and both fed their own people and marketed to whites. In 1883, tribal shipments of pine nuts from Carson City on the Virginia and Truckee Railroad reached 75,000 pounds, and the harvest was believed to be only half finished, with San Franciscans a big market. (The sale of pine nuts may have benefited from a report that they were good for lung trouble.) As late as 1931, a Depression year, Nevada tribes were expected to earn $22,500 ($340,209.34 in 2013 dollars) for the year’s crop, shipping upwards of 1,500 sacks from Reno alone.

The trout and the prehistoric cui-ui (pronounced coo-ee oo-ee by tribal members, kwee-wee by whites) were another basic part of the tribe’s diet. When Nevada boomed, tons of fish were shipped to mining camps around the state, creating jobs on the reservation. Tourism boomed—movie stars and other celebrities traveled to Pyramid to fish for the extraordinarily large Lahontan cutthroat trout. Then the whites destroyed the industry.

Still chasing the siren song of desert reclamation, Derby Dam was built in 1903-1905 to divert water into the desert and create the Newlands Project, impeding the upstream spawn.

Though Pyramid trout even tried leaping the dam, the lake’s fish population and the lake level both began dropping. By the 1940s, the trout died out entirely, and the lake had fallen dozens of feet. Winnemucca Lake, a shallower body of water parallel to Pyramid, dried up—not even personal attention from Franklin Roosevelt saved it.

Some whites later claimed that no one realized what the diversion would do to Pyramid. That’s not true.

A tribal hatchery in the 1950s used trout of the same species but a different variety brought from Sierra lakes to repopulate Pyramid, but they never reached the same size of the earlier population, nor did the celebrity trade return.

B a c k wa r d c u lt u r e Tribal members not accustomed to staying within inked lines on a map kept on the move, often to the whites’ towns. Their contact with whites was not especially beneficial, white culture being destructive to tribal ways. And white leaders didn’t want race mixing.

Lovelock tribal members lost their land to gambling, the Walker Lake tribe lost the lake to encroachment, the Pyramid Lake tribe had squatters for a century. Then there was alcohol.

Like whites who blame Chinese for the opium that was forced on them by the whites’ Opium Wars, Native Americans were disparaged for falling victim to the booze whites brought.

Washo leader Captain Jim wrote to the Reno Gazette in 1902, “Now on account of not having homes the Washoe Indians wander from place to place and learn these destructive habits which the white people have introduced. … Some white men say that we have no business to drink whisky if we know it to be dangerous, but they do the very same thing yet they are supposed to be civilized men.”

Newspapers ownerships and managers came and went, sometimes having humane editorial policies toward the tribes, other times hostile, but nearly always disdainful.

Throughout white society for decades there was an undercurrent of condescension toward the native residents of the Great Basin, and it was frequently voiced most strongly—but not exclusively—in the press.

1870: The Sacramento Reporter observed of the Fourteenth Amendment, “[I]t makes every Digger in California and every Pi-ute in Nevada a citizen, beyond all question; and now comes the Fifteenth Amendment and gives them the right to vote. Indian Jim ... has as much right to vote at the next election as [Sacramento Bee editor] James McClatchy. ... And that he will vote at the next election, we have not the slightest doubt.”

1883: The Nevada State Journal carried an optimistic report on the 4-year-old Carlisle school for Native Americans in Pennsylvania, though it was full of patronizing language: “It is evident that some Indians can become thoroughly civilized.”

1911: Native American Jack Macini was hit by the Overland

Limited, mangled, decapitated, and killed—all of which was a source of amusement to the Reno Evening Gazette, which published a long supercilious story filled with racism and a white person’s version of tribal lore—and elsewhere in the same edition there was a one-inch death notice on a second, apparently less interesting “buck Indian.”

1919: Native Americans installing a pipeline for the Winnemucca Water and Light Company struck for 50 cents a day or more, and the contractor D.O. Church agreed to the raise for fear the ground would freeze.

Other details of the strike are lacking because the Silver State’s report was mostly devoted to trivializing the Sarah incident and belittling the Winnemucca gave tribal members—“Heap Big her people a public Indian Union. No. 1,” etc.

Month after month, identity, writing and decade after decade, a drumlecturing about them beat of this kind of dialogue across the nation. conditioned white thinking, creating a mindset of scorn for Native Americans throughout the Great Basin.

U.S. Senators Key Pittman and Patrick McCarran sponsored legislation granting the land to the squatters, which failed to pass. McCarran was particularly vigorous, sponsoring at least nine measures over the years.

Incredibly, decades passed—even Cliven Bundy was tolerated for only 20 years—without anyone evicting the squatters.

In 1955, author A.J. Liebling— who came to Nevada for a divorce— discovered the dispute and wrote a carefully documented, witty four-part series about it for the New Yorker magazine. It was more attention than the matter ever got from local newspapers. (The Liebling articles are now available as the University of Nevada Press book A Reporter at Large.)

One reason Native Americans were treated thus was that tribes had little political power. Then in the postwar period things began to change.

The influence of New Dealers, the advent of the civil rights movement, and the activism of baby boomers led to cultural changes, as with the portrayal of tribes in film. Tribes

And while journalism still covers Native American conflicts while giving short shrift to tribal accomplishments, the tribes now were players with power of their own.

Tribes today are stronger than they once were, often through their own efforts. The Pyramid tribe cut a deal in the Truckee River Settlement that has strengthened their legal position and given them resources for economic development.

But Fremont’s name is the one on the main street of downtown Las Vegas, and the name of his confederate in the destruction of Dokdokwas, Kit Carson, is all over western Nevada. Carson City was once located in Ormsby County.

Perhaps the best symbol of the conflict in the state’s history was the March 9, 2005, unveiling in the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall of a statue of author and Native American leader Sarah Winnemucca as one of Nevada’s two statues. In spite of the call of some Nevada leaders for its removal, the other statue is of Patrick McCarran. Ω

found themselves with new allies, such as the U.S. Department of Justice.

In the 1940s, some of the squatters were finally moved off the Pyramid reservation. The displaced whites then cut off the irrigation ditches into the reservation, prompting a court fight, with McCarran interfering by trying to remove the tribe’s attorney.

In 1950, the Washo filed a claim of $43,811,985.84 before the Claims Commission, based on the 1862 value of Washoe land, mineral, timber, fish and game rights, plus interest as a result of findings by professional assessors. Twenty-one years later, the U.S. settled the case by paying $5 million to the Washo.

L egacy Over the course of white history in the Great Basin, Native Americans had often aided whites or been used to make white commerce more interesting. Tribal guides had been brought to the Donner Party in 1846.

Nevada was represented at the 1873 California State Fair by 20 Nevada tribal members, men, women and children. They told Jim Butler a good place to camp where he found gold and silver in 1900, helping set off Nevada’s second great mining boom (whites concocted a story of a burro

tracker Dan Paschal in 1918. A Native American died fighting a wildfire in Kings Canyon west of Carson City in 1926. At parades and festivals, Native Americans performed.

But the more common experience of Nevada tribal members was an audience member at a 1932 public meeting asking a question of attorney George Thatcher about the failure of the Wingfield banks. Thatcher answered in part, “If that happens, we might as well give the country back to the Indians”—only to learn then that his questioner was a tribal member.

Changing cultural attitudes in the second half of the 20th century slowly gave the tribes influence to add to their indominability. If there were still struggles—as when a grand

or Halloween, I’ve compiled a list of the great monsters

that have scared me the most. This is not a list of the typical monsters that would generally show up on such a compilation (Dracula, the Mummy, Shia LaBeouf).

These are the monsters that gave me, specifically, the heebie-jeebies. I am weird, so, consequently, some of my selections are weird.

B ruce

(from Jaws): Bruce, the pet name Spielberg gave to his great white shark star, is unrelenting, unhinged and totally unsympathetic. There’s a friendly nude lady swimmer helplessly alone? He’ll eat her. How about a little boy minding his own business on his inflatable raft thing?

Lunch. Dogs? Brunch. Some crusty dude who amazingly survived the shark apocalypse that was the Indianapolis? His date with a shark’s gullet has finally come. Bruce is my winner for all time movie monster.

K ing K ong :

The original King Kong was just a puppet, but, man, that thing was nasty when you took a bunch of pictures of him and edited them together. The dude was biting people’s heads off and smooshing them into the ground with his feet all the way back in 1933! I’ll also

give props to the Peter Jackson incarnation, a tremendously effective use of CGI. Rick Baker’s ape suit in the 1976 remake was OK, but that giant robot one in the same movie was stupid.

M ichael Myers

(Halloween): Some white spray paint, a storebought William Shatner mask, some overalls; put them together, and “Voila!” you get the all-time greatest psycho stalker. John Carpenter’s slasher movie has never been topped in the genre, and I doubt it ever will be. His take on this monster is the only one that matters. Rob Zombie should be ashamed of himself.

Wilford B riMley

(The Thing): John Carpenter’s creature took on many guises in one of the scariest movies ever made, but none was more terrifying than the infected

oatmeal spokesperson, Wilford Brimley. Remember that moment where he shoved his hand in a friend’s mouth and just started melting his face? I do, and I wish I didn’t. When I watch The Firm, I like to pretend that the evil security guy played by Wilford Brimley is actually the Thing-infected Wilford Brimley.

The X enoMorphs

(The first two Alien movies): Acid for blood, extending teeth things, those big-assed heads.

Structurally, these things are everything you wouldn’t want to encounter at a party. Also, basically, they are not very nice at all.

(The Descent): The cavemen who never left the cave. They are an ancient race of bat-like cannibals who eat girls and ruin their spelunking expedition.

B ill paXTon

(Near Dark): This is my choice for scariest vampire, although the original Nosferatu and those things in Salem’s Lot score high for me. Gary Oldman was a little too romantic as Dracula, and Bela Legosi always made me laugh. Nope, Paxton’s punk rock vampire in Kathryn Bigelow’s forgotten classic gets my vote for creepiest bloodsucker.

The r ancor

(Return of the Jedi): It almost ate Luke Skywalker, and it definitely ate the Gamorrean Guard.

Bit that sucker’s head right off.

Scared me a lot more than the stupid Sarlacc Pit.

(Twin Peaks): Great monsters sometimes appeared on TV first. The actor who played the murderous Bob (Frank Silva)

P iPPi L ongstocking :

I’m putting it in the middle of the list, but the reality is that this monster gives me the willies more than most. I’m not talking about the American version of Pippi that came out in the late ’80s, although she was kind of spooky. I’m talking about the Swedish one dubbed in English.

She’s a thousand different maladies thrown into a blender for a disgusting nightmare frappe. That hair … those teeth … that voice that didn’t match up to the way her mouth was moving. She’s evil. Pure evil.

(Hellraiser): Pinhead and the lot are about as freaky as it gets, putting nails in people’s heads and pulling skin off with chains. They also, as my editor Brad Bynum pointed out, have a bite-sized snack named after them at your local Cinnabon.

F reddy k rueger

(A Nightmare on Elm Street): I’m talking the Freddy from the original flick, and not the Groucho Marx wannabe he became in later installments.

F rankenstein’s M onster :

My editor got on my case to include some of the classic Universal monsters. Honestly, while I enjoyed the films, they didn’t really scare me at all. Upon reflection, I suppose Boris Karloff’s stitched together concoction throwing a girl to her drowning death because he ran out of flower petals is quite chilling.

(Jurassic Park and The Lost World): A combination of great animatronics and CGI, the nastiest dinosaur ever to grace screens made a triumphant, horrifying entrance in the original, terrorizing two kids and Jeff Goldblum. The monster went to San Diego in the sequel, where he ate the screenwriter and somebody’s dog.

(Marathon Man): The dude looked sweet and meek, like a grandpa who would give you a dollar and let you pick something out of that gross hard candy dish.

I don’t care if it was a fake giant spider, or a real spider crawling across some actor’s face. I’m not even going to pick any movies in particular. To me, all spiders are living proof that monsters do indeed walk amongst us. They must be stopped!

Sadly, Silva died in 1995, so he won’t be part of the planned third season of Peaks due to air in 2016.

There have been a lot of zombies over the years, but none beat the Romero zombies of Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. I especially like the zombies with mint chocolate chip ice cream colored skin in Dawn.

(Creepshow): While we are on the subject of Romero, I must give props to that Crate Monster in Creepshow. Those teeth and the way they took a bite out of somebody’s head will always stand as an all-time great movie gross-out (the drool!). Walking Dead fans, did you see the crate marked “Ship to Horlick’s University” sitting around Terminus in the season five premiere? That was a tribute to the Crate Monster!

The artists have complementary exhibitions at the Holland Gallery through Nov. 7. Kaplan’s portion of the gallery is carefully hung with vast seas of white gallery wall between panels—the way it’s a.L. Kaplan’s Water: hung resonates with the story’s deep sea Pictures, Words setting. It’s a story set at the bottom of the ocean, an environment just as foreign and frightening as deep space.

“It looks like outer space, but it’s completely different,” she said. “You’re not just boundless in this void with no gravity. You’re being completely pummeled, and it’s loud and so hostile. ... It’s a neat environment to explore because it’s so close but so weird.”

She’s from Oregon, but lives in Reno and works as a designer for Custom Ink T-shirt company. She and Nawbuntat both grew up reading mainstream comics, Marvel Comics—Spider-Man, The X-Men, The Avengers and the like—and got into independently published comics later.

“It’s a medium all to itself," said Kaplan. "It’s not just words and pictures, it’s a melding of the two and it becomes its own language. It reads so differently than just prose or just pictures.”

She draws with pen and ink and adds digital colors. Her works in the gallery are

all digital prints. Some panels stand out as individual compositions even without the larger narrative context.

“It changes the pacing, and allows you to really play with how the story is read,” she said.

Nawbuntat’s exhibition, Starmaps & Other Stories is packed with images—zinestyle copies, some of which he handcolored for the exhibition. (He has work for sale at the Mixed Message zine shop near Midtown.) His work includes a number of standalone panels and pages and three complete issues of a comic called The USO. “It stands for the Unregistered Sex Offender,” he said. “It’s about a serial killing time lord. And it’s set in Reno.”

The local band Registered Sex Offender is featured, and the Silver Legacy acts as a portal to another dimension.

Nawbuntat's exhibition also includes the prologue and first chapter of Starmaps, a comic series he says is inspired by manga, Japanese comics, specifically One Piece and Fist of the North Star.

“It’s about the future after a cyborg destroys the planet with a huge sword, and eugenic beings occupying planets out in space,” he said. “I have quite a few story arcs planned for it. This is going to be my life’s work, I guess. It all started in high school when I got this super stupid, juvenile image of a giant sword crushing the Earth. … It was probably because I hated school.”

Despite their mutual interests, Kaplan and Nawbuntat didn’t know each other before the Holland Project decided to link them together.

“In science fiction, usually the antagonistic force in a story is an ideology,” said Kaplan. “That’s much more interesting than ‘this guy is evil.’ I don’t like that. I don’t like that plot and I don’t see that reflected in the world, but I see battling ideologies heavily reflected in the world. So it’s a fun story form.” Ω

It’s worth the effort.

The decor is spartan but very clean and welcoming. Curtains and the backs of refrigeration equipment create “walls” separating kitchen from dining room—however, I admire the focus on food rather than excessive effort spent dressing up humble surroundings. It’s definitely the food you should focus on.

We started with tacos al pastor ($1.25 each) and a small order of barbecue chicken wings ($5.50, 6 pieces). An order of wings shouldn’t take longer than 10 minutes from start to finish, and these were right on time. Perfectly cooked, crispy yet not dry, finished with a sprinkle of dry rub and dollops of the house sauce on each drumette. The tacos were excellent, featuring housemade tortillas and tasty filling. Both made for a great start to our meal.

My wife’s combo plate included baby back ribs, chicken and beef brisket ($14.95), served with coleslaw, and hand-cut, seasoned potato wedges. The slaw was pretty standard, and my wife enjoyed mixing it with the brisket. The potatoes were tossed in the same seasoning blend we enjoyed on the wings. Everything was definitely housemade and tasted fresh.

If you’re a fan of slow-cooked meat that can’t wait to slide off the bone, you’re going to like this.

No joke, both the ribs and chicken bones slipped out without a fight, as if they’d only been there to lend shape to the meat. The brisket and pulled pork were among the most tender you’ll find, and the sauce—though sweeter than my own—had enough zip to satisfy.

My only criticism might be that I prefer ribs with a little fight left in ’em, but I know I’m probably in the minority. The brisket was served in large, thin slices that was a bit odd to me (being used to chopped or torn chunks), but my wife really liked this preparation. Slow-smoked for 14 hours, you could cut it with a wooden spoon.

I couldn’t decide between meats, so the combo sandwich with brisket and pulled pork ($10.95) was just the ticket. A large, fluffy sandwich roll was stuffed with meat and sauce (lettuce on the side), which I enjoyed with baked beans and potato salad ($2.95 for the extra side). Both sides had great flavor, though the potato salad was less chunky than I prefer.

Smart barbecue joints feature rolls of paper towels on the tables.

At worst they’ll give you horrid little “wet naps,” wherein you attempt to tame handfuls of sticky sauce with a damp postage stamp.

Texas Soul BBQ surprised me with finger bowls of water and lemon peel accompanied by a stack of napkins. This is a really nice, practical touch, although you have to keep the bowl to the side after use, lest you gross out your wife.

A slice of warm, housemade sweet potato pie a la mode ($3.50) rounded out our meal, much to my wife’s delight. I don’t normally care for sweet potato anything, but this was not hard to enjoy. Don’t leave without trying it.

The owner is pleasant and courteous, eager to share his years of experience and love of making people happy with a good meal. As we left a family entered, the youngest girl nearly shouting, “Oh, my gosh, it smells so good in here!” Just wait till you taste it, kid. Ω

Just in case you didn’t get your fill of people being dispatched en masse in Fury, along comes John Wick. The latest Keanu Reeves vehicle is a stunner. It boasts a high body count, and offers cinematic proof that you shouldn’t mess with a man’s best friend.

In the film’s opening moments, we learn that the title character (Reeves) has lost his by wife, and he’s taking it justifiably hard.

His wife has given him a gift of companionship from the beyond, and it’s a very sweet moment. The few scenes of Wick and the dog bonding help to build an instant likability for the Wick character.

While putting some gas in his sweet Mustang, a young Russian man (Alfie Allen) asks if he can buy the car. Wick groans that it is not for sale. His unwillingness to part with the car results in tragedy as the Russian mob comes to his house, beats him to within inches of death, kills the puppy and takes the car.

Well, they’ve messed with the wrong guy.

Wicks is a former hired assassin with a bunch of weaponry and gold buried in his floor. He’s known around town as the Boogeyman, and the asshole that stole his car has a father, Viggo (Michael Nyqvist), who once employed Wick. Viggo lived in confidence that Wick was retired and out of the game. Now, his son has killed the Boogeyman’s dog, and all involved, voluntarily or not, are going to face his wrath.

That wrath consists of some of the greatest choreographed carnage in recent movie memory. Wick shoots bad guys in a way that evokes a ninja, with a precision that protects

the innocent but anybody in the surroundings with a criminal background is going to die, no matter what they do.

The film is co-directed by a couple of stunt guys, David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, making their directorial debuts. Stahelski has actually been a Reeves stunt double many times, including the Matrix films, Constantine and Point Break. The familiarity with each other pays off, because the stunt sequences and choreography are flawless. In the pantheon of action movie directing debuts, this one stands very tall.

Reeves is an actor who has taken a lot of shots over the years. True, he can be pretty darned bad in some films, but I think the guy has strong command of himself in front of a camera. There’s a scene in this movie that may very well contain the best acting of his career.

Wick doesn’t exactly wear his emotions on his sleeve. He’s a simmering sort, but once pushed to a certain level, he shows some mighty powerful rage, and Reeves is very much up to the task.

It’s also clear that Reeves does much of his own stunt work in the film. There’s a lot of rolling around and gun dances.

He’s always been a capable action star, and his physical outing here is as impressive as his work in The Matrix. The first one. Screw the sequels.

The screenplay adds some nice touches, including an exclusive hotel for assassins run by Ian McShane. The place is like some sort of artist’s loft, except for the fact that the inhabitants paint with blood and brains. When Wick gets his stay violently interrupted, the calm calls from the front desk and fellow criminals sleepily sticking their heads out of doors to see what’s going on are quite funny.

Willem Dafoe makes a nice mark in a few scenes as a double-crossing hitman. Adrianne Palicki, the actress who was supposed to be Wonder Woman until NBC saw the pilot and puked, shows action movie chops as another gun-for-hire that can’t be trusted.

John Wick is a great-looking movie that mixes in some strong emotions with its awesome set pieces. It’s nice to see Keanu Reeves back in the saddle. Now, with the success of this film, perhaps somebody will finally greenlight Bill and Ted 3. Ω

Fury

David Ayer has come up with a genuine horror show in Fury, his take on a World War II tank crew trying to survive in the last days of the war. This film goes full bore in showing the horrors of war, with its very first scene depicting a brutal act of violence that shows Ayer is not playing games. His intentions are to show the effects of war on a group of men who are clinging to the last threads of sanity after years of claustrophobic, blood-soaked terror inside a tank. Brad Pitt leads the crew as Don “Wardaddy” Collier, a grizzled, scarred up individual resorting to arguably insane behavior as he treks across Nazi Germany. When he’s saddled with new recruit Norman (Logan Lerman), his behavior becomes a strange mix of paternal and completely unhinged. Other members of the crew include Boyd “Bible” Swan (Shia LaBeouf), Trini “Gordo” Garcia (Michael Pena) and Grady “Coon-Ass” Travis (Jon Bernthal). Much of the film takes place inside the tank, with a few breaks, most notably a scene when Wardaddy introduces Logan to a nice German girl while he has some eggs. The carnage in the battle scenes is unrelenting. A sequence where a group of U.S. tanks go up against a superior German tank is as harrowing as moviemaking gets. Stay away from this movie if you don’t like onscreen gore. It’s quite vicious right out of the gate and straight through its entire two-hour-plus running time.

As action films go, it’s a real winner. As war films go, it’s one to be remembered.

this means? Court drama! Downey Jr. and Duvall try their best to make something out of this, but their work is attached to a lame script that wants to be too many kinds of films at once. It’s overstuffed, boring, mawkish crap.

David Fincher set out to make the nastiest, most poisonous movie about marriages gone bad ever made, and I think he succeeded. Fincher and Gillian Flynn, the author of the novel and screenplay, came up with a toxic cocktail, laced with dark humor, scabrous satire and blistering performances. On the day of his fifth anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) returns to his home after sulking at the bar he owns with his sister (a funny Carrie Coon) to discover his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), is missing. Nick calls the police and the in-laws, and quickly finds himself sucked up in a media circus that leaves him dazed and confused.

His demeanor in public is a strange combination of a malaise and ill-timed smiles. Yeah … he’s a suspect. Through a series of narrated flashbacks, we hear the story of the Flynne marriage from Amy’s perspective, chronicled in her diary. Then, at about the halfway point, the movie goes completely, wonderfully insane. For those unaware of the plot twist, my best advice to you is that you should accept it—even though it’s totally bug nuts—sit back, and enjoy the rest of this messed-up ride. Anybody who goes to this movie thinking they’re going to see something grounded in reality will be setting themselves up for disappointment. Gone Girl is nightmarish fantasy, a hyper-sensationalized “what-if” that thrives on its implausibility. Had this movie tried to stick closer to reality, it would’ve killed too much of the fun. Pike, a British actress perhaps known best for Jack Reacher, gets the role of a lifetime with Amy, and she devours it. Affleck shows what’s been true all along in his career: He’s a fine actor capable of great nuance and a movie star of the highest order.

The Judge

The prospect of Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall sharing a movie together is, in a word, awesome. So what does director David Dobkin, with Downey as producer, do with such an opportunity? He gives us a movie so cliché-ridden that the occasional inspired moments scream out at us like a lost puppy yelping while being swarmed by rabid bats.

Downey plays Hank Palmer, one of those typical movie lawyers who gets bad guys sprung free in Chicago and pisses, literally and figuratively, on lawyers trying to put bad men in jail. Just before he gets another baddie off the hook, a call comes in from home. It turns out his mom died while tending to her flowers, so Hank is off to his hometown for the funeral. In that hometown is his lousy dad, Joseph (Duvall), the town judge and a major league prick. Hank hates his dad. Oh boy, oh boy, does he hate him. Joseph hates his son. Gee willikers, does he hate that little son of a bitch. The reasons for their mutual hatred are slowly revealed, and not a one of those reasons comes as a surprise. Hank does the funeral, and is all ready to bolt and go deal with his newly developing divorce when he gets called back to town. Turns out dad’s Cadillac and, consequently, dad are being investigated in a possibly intentional vehicular homicide. You know what

Hasbro gets another movie touting one of its products (along with Transformers and Battleship), and this is by far the worst, if that is even possible. Laine and Debbie (Olivia Cooke and Shelley Hennig) have been playing with a Ouija board since they were kids. Debbie plays solo in her house alone when they get older, and winds up dead, hanging herself with a string of plugged in Christmas lights that, mysteriously, don’t unplug under the stress of her weight pulling on them, but we won’t go into that right now.

Laine and her friends start playing with the Ouija after Debbie’s death, and they discover that there are spirits living in Debbie’s house, and they had something to do with Debbie’s death.

Maybe one of them pulled on the middle of the strand of Christmas lights while she was hanging herself, thus relieving some of the tension and preventing them from becoming unplugged? Oh wait, I’m sorry, I pledged not to go into that. The wannabe scares in the PG-13 outing consist of fake-outs and people behind doors, the kind of stuff you will see coming if you’ve seen, say, one horror movie in your lifetime. If that is in fact true, don’t make this your second one, for you will wind up disappointed.

Based on the real actions by gay activists to support striking miners in 1984 Great Britain, this is an enjoyable showcase for some fine actors, as well as a fun springboard for good British humor. Sporting a particularly awesome Morrissey haircut, Mark Ashton (Ben Schnetzer) is fronting a gay activist group in England that’s having a hard time getting respected. Mark notices that the miners union is taking a real beating with the public and with the government, and suggests to his group that collecting money for the miners would be a solid publicity ploy with charitable rewards. Young Joe (George MacKay) goes for a walk on his 20th birthday and encounters Mark and his group marching in a gay pride parade. He joins in, eventually hearing of Mark’s plan to support the miners. He decides to eschew his collegiate responsibilities and join the fight. An eventual meeting with the miners brings some great actors into the show. Paddy Considine is terrific as Dai, one of their leaders, a grateful man who stands up for the gay support while many in the town shun their existence. A speech given by Dai at a gay establishment is genuinely warm and rousing, and pretty much sets the tone for the film. Bill Nighy is equally wonderful as Cliff, a meek loner who seems a bit skittish at first but becomes one of the activists’ staunchest supporters. Imelda Staunton delivers as Hefina, a woman who has had just about enough of the useless prejudicial tactics coming from some of her friends. Sure, Pride is a little predictable at times, but the cast is undeniably brilliant. It has the feel of some of the great British comedy-dramas of recent years like The Full Monty and Billy Elliot. Because it’s actually telling a true story, it has a little more heft than those cinematic bonbons.

St. Vincent

Vincent (Bill Murray), a reclusive, crotchety old guy, reluctantly finds himself socially interacting with his new neighbor, Maggie (Melissa McCarthy), and her son, Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher), after her movers break his fence, tree and car. Vincent eventually winds up babysitting Oliver, which leads to them bonding at the racetrack and inside bars, and hanging out with a “lady of the night” (Naomi Watts) much to the eventual chagrin of Maggie. Murray and Lieberher are great together, which allows you to forgive the sometimes schmaltzy direction and writing from Theodore Melfi. Vincent is the meatiest role Murray has gotten in almost a decade, and it’s exciting to see him firing on all cylinders. Recently, I have been complaining about McCarthy getting stuck in mostly insulting slapstick roles. This movie gives her a chance to show off the fact that she can really act, and she makes the most of it. Lieberher is one of those child actors who seems like he’s been acting for 30 years, well beyond the amount of time he has spent on this Earth. Watts takes the pregnant Russian prostitute role and runs with it, getting some good laughs through a wildly overdone accent. They all put this one over the top with their performances.

Feel dirty Rocky Horror Extravaganza “Once we had a family come in with a 3-yearold dressed as Frank-N-Furter,” said Bruce Ganye, referring to last year’s by Anna Hart Rocky Horror Extravaganza. “She asked me, ‘Can I hit you in the head with my ice pick?’”

The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a film adaptation of a stage production, was released nearly 40 years ago, and it paid a hilarious homage to the science fiction and horror B-movies that came before it. Not long after the film’s release, The Rocky Horror Picture Show rose to the status of cult classic.

The audience varies from people who watched it when it first came out in 1975 to some younger audiences. Even a family or two has been known to come out. But you still might want to call a babysitter for the kids.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show has everything you could want in a horror film: a spooky castle, a murder, even cannibalism. But it’s also tinged with comedy, replete with musical numbers, and has a fair amount of sexuality that bends rules of gender completely out of whack.

While elements of the movie, along with the bizarre culture of viewer participation, may be a little overwhelming to a first-timer at the event, its founders feel that the live music creates an atmosphere that makes it all a little more palatable to more audiences. “[Last year] we saw that because of the live music, all the guards dropped,” said Danger. “It allowed people to be comfortable, especially with the overt sexuality.”

For those who are familiar with the antics that are part of the tradition of watching the film, this event won’t disappoint. From throwing toast to yelling obscenities and dressing in drag, it’s all become a standard that the members of Pinky Polanski have held on to, while adding a rock music backbone.

“Part of what we do with bringing in the energy with the rock music … is appeal to those who didn’t have a connection to the cult flick and who didn’t have a connection to Broadway show tunes,” said Humphries. “We draw people in, where we can all enjoy the strangeness and the inclusiveness that this show represents.”

With a live band singing about the classic time warps and sweet transvestites, Reno’s screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show is sure to be a unique experience for traditionalists and newcomers alike. Ω

While many public showings of the film have shadow casts, where people dress as the characters, acting out the movie as it plays behind them, a Reno group offers something different.

Dressed as characters from the film, local band Pinky Polanski has teamed up with Cargo, a musical venue in Reno, to put on a screening of the film, along with a live performance of all of the music.

“We combine the narrative of a movie with the energy of a rock show,” says John Mendecino, who plays guitar for Pinky Polanski.

Nevada day Parade

Nevada became a state on Oct. 31, 1864—150 years ago when the former Nevada Territory entered the Union during the American Civil War. The “Battle Born” state not only provided votes in support of President Abraham Lincoln’s reelection, but the silver that was mined from the Comstock Lode near Virginia City helped finance the Union’s objectives in the Civil War. Of course, that’s just one of the many interesting aspects of our state, which also has a fascinating history dating long before its admission to the United States of America. After a year of events across the state observing Nevada’s sesquicentennial, the celebration comes to a head this weekend for the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday, Nov. 1, in our state capital Carson City. The festivities get underway at 8 a.m. starting with a hot air balloon launch on Carson Street near the Carson Mall (weather permitting). Then at 10 a.m., the parade begins with a flyover of military aircraft, followed by groups of local law enforcement, public officials and community leaders, floats and marching bands heading down Carson City’s main street. The procession starts at the intersection of Carson and William streets and ends at the intersection of Stewart and Carson streets. The parade wraps up between 1-2 p.m., but the celebration continues at various events across town, including the Nevada Day FamFest on Curry Street, Nevada Day Pow Wow at the Carson Colony Gym and the RSVP Nevada Day Carnival at Mill Park. In case the weather turns frightful on Halloween, there are some indoor alternatives for little goblins and ghouls to get their Halloween fix. Circus Circus, 500 N. Sierra St., holds Trick or Treat Street inside the Midway offering treats, appearances by Archie from the Reno Aces and music by Caravan. The free event starts at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31. Call 329-0711. Nevada Humane Society, 2825 Longley Lane, Ste. B, holds its free Safe Trick or Treating featuring treats, adoptable pets in costume, spooky music and other Halloween fun starting at 3 p.m. Trick or Treat Safely at Scheels, 1200 Scheels Drive, at the Outlets at Sparks offers treats, a scavenger hunt and free rides on the Scheels Ferris Wheel. The fun starts at 3 p.m. The National Automobile Museum, 10 S. Lake St., offers Trick or Treat in the Streets of the Museum featuring candy stations, a “book walk,” a magic show, games and access to the galleries featuring themed street scenes and more than 200 cars on display. The MS Dixie II transforms into a haunted “ghost ship.” Each level offers a different style of music with its own creepy Halloween theme. The Bottom Gallows level of the boat will be a black light extravaganza featuring go-go dancers, live black light art, light shows, jugglers, free body paint for guests and music by DJs Theory, Irieyes and Hephay. The mid-ship level theme is “Heavy Smoke” featuring two smoke machines, strobe, laser and disco lights from all angles and live music by Jelly Bread.

The top deck offers “Sanity,” a weatherdependent level in which house music rules.

DJs Jami Deep and Zach Rawlinson will spin to keep spirits warm and positive. The party take place on Halloween night on board the MS Dixie II at Zephyr Cove Marina, 760 U.S. Highway 50 on the south shore of Lake Tahoe. Boarding begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35-$55. The Latino Research Center hosts this event to celebrate the Mexican holiday of Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. There will be food, beverages and music, as well as arts and crafts for children, including mask making, face painting and decorating sugar skulls. There will also be an exhibition area for altars where food offerings and other items will be displayed to honor the lives of those who have passed. Let It Grow Saturday, Nov. 1, marks the start of Movember, a month-long event to raise awareness of men’s health issues and money to help fight diseases like prostate and testicular cancers. During Movember, men on a participating team must begin clean-shaven on the first day of the month and grow only a mustache for 30 days in an effort to raise funds. Under the Rose Brewing Company will host a party to sign up volunteers for its Reno Mo-Men Team and to raise funds and awareness of prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health. The party features special beer releases, food and ice cream, hot shaves and music

The agony of delete I just had the humiliating experience of being dumped via email. I’d been seeing the guy for three months. Just days before, we had a romantic date, and he kept saying things like, “We’re so good together” and was very lovey-dovey. In the email, he said he realized that we aren’t compatible, because I’m too driven and careerfocused, and he needs a more traditional woman. Why did he never mention this before? How does a guy who was very affectionate for months suddenly take to the computer to send you a quick note that it’s over? I’m so hurt and confused by how he handled this.

Unfortunately, personal disasters like getting dumped get none of the funding and attention of natural disasters.

There’s no early warning system to make that annoying sound on your TV, and FEMA doesn’t show up the day after with pallets of Kleenex and vodka.

Making matters worse, this guy didn’t just dump you—he robo-dumped you. It’s OK to take to the internet to break up with your cable company or somebody you’ve gone out with twice. But once you have a relationship with a person, you owe it to them to sit down with them and tell them it’s over. You don’t get to shove your dirty work off on their phone, their computer or their vacuum cleaner.

Being willing to put yourself in misery’s way and break up face to face preserves the other person’s dignity—their feeling that they have value. “Subj: we r thru,” on the other hand, suggests that they don’t matter, and their feelings don’t matter. All that matters is discarding them in the most expedient way.

Eventually, the hormone high wears off, and incompatibilities get highlighted instead of blurred. It’s normal to feel guilty for not noting them sooner. Favorite daughter Dawn Wells As Nevada begins its 150th year, we thought an appropriate interview for this space would be Miss Nevada 1959, who held that title just five years before Nevada’s centennial. We caught up with her during a break from her meetings as a member of the board of Reno’s Wells Discovery Museum, named for her cousin. She is seen in this photo with a small member of a Reno family outfitted like Gilligan at a signing for her new book, What Would Mary Ann Do?

What is your role in the museum?

Well, I’m chairman of the Terry Lee Wells Foundation. And we give grants, and we fund it. … So it’s one of our big priorities.

And I haven’t been here in a year. So all the new things that are coming in this summer and this fall are very exciting.

So that’s what we started with this morning. We have meetings the rest of the afternoon with whatever else we’re going to support. It’s kind of nice coming back to your hometown. Terry Lee Wells was my cousin and left me in charge of her foundation money when she passed away, so I really have an opportunity of coming back to my hometown and helping out.

Were you close?

Oh, yes. We were like sisters, the only girls in the family. I mean, I had a halfsister but there was Howdy [Howard] and Jim and Clinton and Frankie and me and Terry. And she was three or four years younger than me or maybe even more, but the older we got, the closer we got—not necessarily in school, but we were very much like sisters. ...

Gilligan’s Island has always been connected to comedy. Even you have never treated it seriously.

Now, with the book, you’re connecting it to values. What made you do that?

Well, because the character of Mary Ann, I think, was really the moral compass of the show. And even though it was silly and trite, she kept everybody in line. We didn’t bully Gilligan. He got us there, in the first place. She always helped the Skipper

Bring back Nixon?

You know, I kinda like having slightly long nails. They’re not just handy, they’re nifty, too. And scratching various erogenous zones, like the upper shoulders, while sporting some decent nails becomes its own kind of low level erotica. For that matter, so is scratching poison oak. I now realize that I truly do need to keep my land line, if only to act as an effective decoy in this world of raging phone farms. These calls are an unfortunate and constant reminder that our political system has been completely corrupted by King Kaish. Mongo millions is now just so entrenched and so overtly gross as to give a feeling of true despair when contemplating how its excesses might one day be truly trimmed and made more sanely European. The whole game is really pretty friggin’ rotten, and it seems as though the rottenness has not abated a whole lot in recent years.

What a shame. Not that it’s unfixable.

But it will be so harrowing as to be daunting. Big Money has a habit of putting its self-preservation way up on the list of Shit To Do.

And I’ve had fathers say to me, “I wish my daughter were a Mary Ann.” What is it about—we all had crushes on Mary Ann when we were young. Ginger was a little too high maintenance, you know?

And I realized that there’s something to say here. And I laugh and say, my mother raised me with Mary Ann values in a state of legal prostitution, gambling and divorce. How did that happen? Mary Ann came from Kansas. But I was really raised by a mom who knew where I was every single second. And my parents were divorced—I was raised with my mother here. My father was in Las Vegas. They were friends, so I had two families that loved me. But my mother kept her eye on me. Now it’s too hard for families.

Both parents have to work, there’s mixed families with divorced kids and all of that. … So it’s much harder to raise a 13-yearold daughter. And I think there’s some values that I talk about in the book about manners and what’s your work ethic and things that are important to deal with that I don’t know that families have a chance to even talk about. Ω
