Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Pets bring a lot of joy into people’s lives, don’t they?

My pets, on the other hand, are like children—somebody else’s children, those obnoxious, whiny, undisciplined children that actually make you avoid their families.

That’s a truer simile than I intended when I typed it, since my beloved cat, Prometheus, finally got fed up with my dogs and moved next door to the Polahas. Kelly’s cats moved in with a pack of coyotes to avoid them a year ago.

I have two dogs, Alice and Charlie. Alice is around 15 years old, still spry, but she’s been as dumb as a bag of boxes since the day she was born. She was always the sweetest thing, a rescue dog, but she’s 15 years old, and she’s still surprised at her own poop’s spontaneous generation. At least she’s surprised outside.

I don’t believe that old saying that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Alice has learned a great new one. She calls it, “Harassing the skunk.” She doesn’t get close enough to this skunk that’s been hanging around the neighborhood to get sprayed. I think she learned from the first time that that’s an extended and painful experience. No, she likes to get close enough that she can just run through the wafted spray. It’s not quite bad enough—in comparison to the greater cloud of fumes the skunk emits—that I can quite tell that she got got. Until the next day, that is, when the microscopic mist has filled the lower half of my house. She’s performed this act two out of the last four times that the skunk has shown up.

She got me again this morning. The living room smells like the aftermath of an electrical fire.

I’m all out of Summer’s Eve, and since it’s 5 a.m., I can’t just run up to Scolari’s to grab some feminine product. (In my experience, Summer’s Eve and a shampoo is the only treatment that actually eliminates the odor; it’s far better than tomato juice or lemon.)

I guess I’ll run up before I go to work, but I didn’t really need my Monday to start like this.

And did I ever ever tell you about the time that it cost me $150 to find out that Charlie was sad?

I have enjoyed your paper for many years, usually reading it from cover to cover, and over again too. You have more in your paper that relates to my life and area then any TV news I have ever seen. Now my guilty little pleasure, the place I go to first thing, is the horoscope. I smile now just thinking of it. I could write a whole letter just about my enjoyment of the horoscopes you print but the point of this letter would suffer. To get to that point ... I have signed up for your newsletter as I find I am house-bound for hopefully just a small amount of time. The same stories and such I have found, but imagine my horror at my horoscope!

What has happened to the horoscope that seems to be written just for me?

Please give me the same horoscope all the other readers are getting?

Although they’re not in business yet in Nevada, Sheila Leslie should add the auto industry to that list, more specifically, Tesla. She should start nagging now how the tax breaks they’re going to get are unfair to Nevadans.

Double action Re “Return of the Messenger” (Feature story, Oct. 2): After reading your article on Gary Webb, I was saddened to see his cause of death once again listed as suicide. Really? this man uncovers a drug-running scandal that winds up implicating two former presidents and our intelligence-gathering apparatus and then takes his life by shooting himself twice with a .38 revolver?

Again, really? The Mockingbird machinery is obviously still in place and well oiled. I’m sure you’re aware the first shot exited through his lower left jaw. Please show on a diagram an angle how this is possible without it being a ridiculously counter intuitive way to hold a weapon. To the other readers out there, stand in front of a mirror pretending to hold a revolver and try to find a believable way to to make that first shot. It doesn’t work.

What more can be said, other than “the mighty Wurlitzer plays on.”

My biggest problem with swear words in newspapers is that they set a bad example for young readers, who should be encouraged by example to seek more graceful and less boorish ways to express themselves in writing.

Alan Moore Reno Editor’s note: Making the claim that they aren’t concerned about what is said but with how it’s said is nearly as hallowed a tradition among censors as restricting civil rights to “protect the children.” You should know this because both have been used so effectively against reggae music because of its promotion of drugs. You’ll also remember how conservatives tried to undermine women’s arguments after the Hobby Lobby decision by complaining about their “tone.” If Fred Speckmann wants to maturely complain and call us names to support his argument, that’s fine by us, but it certainly can undermine his ability to make his voice heard by the people he hopes will publish his complaints.

Since CO2 has climbed like a homesick angel since 1997, yet global temperatures have not, isn’t it time he started to wonder if those “world’s leading climatologists” might not be wrong. Or (worse) know they’re wrong but cannot now climb down and admit it—and pass up all the “green” research money being showered on them?

A painting worth a thousand words I thought it was a joke.

At first glance, the painting, “Nine Cheers for the Silver State,” looked like a photo-shopped satire involving Nevada’s past and present governors and U.S. senators, merrily toasting each other in a gilded setting, with former First by Lady and Assemblywoman Dawn Sheila Leslie Gibbons resplendent in a period costume thrown in as a glamorous counterpoint.

Turns out the joke is on us.

Any Nevadan who follows state politics would instantly recognize Gov. Sandoval, Sen. Bryan, Gov. Miller, and Sens. Heller and Reid in the painting. Govs. Paul Laxalt and Bob List are also depicted along with Congressman Mark Amodei and former first lady Dema Guinn.

But who is that man sitting across the table from Gov. Sandoval, signing a document meant to commemorate Nevada Day, October 31, 1864? And who is standing next to Sen. Reid?

Last week, in a fascinating piece

by Sandra Chereb published in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, two

mining company executives from Comstock Mining sheepishly admitted they were in the painting, but insisted it was at the painter’s request.

The company is currently engaged in a pitched battle with residents in Silver City who feel their very homes and tourist livelihood are threatened by the renewed effort to find gold on the Comstock Lode.

The painting symbolizes everything that’s been wrong about mining from the beginning of statehood, when Nevada’s original constitution was rejected because the mining industry didn’t like it. You can easily picture the mining barons in a room just like the one in the painting, partying with Nevada’s fledgling political class, deciding how the constitution should be rewritten to treat their industry more favorably. Drinks all around, and let’s bring in those pretty ladies to celebrate!

While the Storey County Commission approved the expansion of Comstock Mining’s activities, the Comstock Residents Association members feel the painting depicts the “clubby” and exclusive atmosphere that has allowed mining companies to treat Nevada as a colony for 150 years.

George Jetson drove his air car The coming of Tesla Motors to Northern Nevada is all the news, but a totally different, free-market approach to transportation could make a much greater impact on our lives and environment.

In 2011, Nevada became the first state to legalize Google’s experiby Brendan Trainor mental driverless cars. Since then, Gov. Sandoval has been a passenger, so has a legally blind man who rode in one for some errands.

Despite serious concerns about government surveillance and personal privacy, digital technology has opened new possibilities for human flourishing. Futurists believe there will be many benefits if, by 2040, 75 percent of cars are driverless.

Studies show that 90 percent of accidents are caused by human error. If the driverless cars are proven safe—and they have already logged over 700,000 miles without causing an accident—the number

of automotive deaths and injuries can be dramatically reduced. The cars use a light radar system guided by lasers and detailed digital maps to program their routes and make adjustments as they move. Most of the experimental cars have been dual use, with the option for manual driving available. Some of the latest cars being tested are completely autonomous, without a steering wheel or brake pedals.

In a world where you can summon a car to your home with your smart phone, get in and be driven to your destination where you will not have to park the car, the very concept of car ownership could become obsolete. Why keep that car in your driveway depreciating in value while at the same time incurring expensive insurance and maintenance costs?

There will be no need for laws against texting while driving.

Family and friends could have more enjoyable driving/riding experiences. There are concerns about liability. Will the driverless

car company assume all liability, or will the individual who programs his route be partly responsible?

Many experts believe these issues can be resolved through the common law without the need for much more regulation. Some laws will need to be revisited as many of our traffic laws go back to the early 20th century.

The elderly, disabled and children will be obvious beneficiaries.

So will urban planning, as there will be much less need for parking spaces, opening up new possibilities for more productive use of scarce land resources. While this will make inner cities more livable, reduced costs could also enable longer commutes to work, and a better quality of life for suburbanites. The debate over the tradeoffs between fuel economy and vehicle weight can be resolved as improved safety will allow for lighter cars, reducing pollution dramatically.

Law enforcement has expressed some concerns. If crooks are not required to drive, will they be able

to more easily shoot at police? The FBI has speculated that terrorists might be able to program these cars into explosive delivery systems without the need for a suicidal driver. These are issues, but they are not deal breakers.

What to do about displaced labor? Since there will be decreasing needs for car salesmen, taxi and bus drivers, possibly truck and forklift drivers, will that mean enormous unemployment? Obviously, there are no more horse and buggy drivers except as tourist attractions.

There is also no need for cleaning up fly-infested piles of horse dung on every street corner. Humans adopt to changing economic conditions readily, provided there are no artificial government imposed bottlenecks. Human needs are endless, and as lower order jobs are replaced by technology, higher order jobs can emerge to satisfy those needs. Twentieth century futurists predicted flying cars, but it seems driverless cars on Nevada’s roads by 2018 will be the reality. Ω

Get ready for the storm As University of Nevada, Reno officials headed to the Reno City Planning Commission to present their vision for the heart of Reno, several things became almost immediately apparent.

While the plan is indeed ambitious, radical even—for example, it eliminates new gaming licenses in the university district annex—it seems to lack some crucial housekeeping details, like how the university proposes to remove ongoing business concerns. There are pawn shops, T-shirt shops and tattoo parlors that exist in the space where the university wants to install more Norman Rockwell-friendly businesses. (It also hopes to exclude a medical marijuana dispensary that has already applied for use on the outskirts of the district.) The ability of government and quasi-government to remove going businesses is often limited to methods the public dislikes, like eminent domain.

Another proposal that seems almost certain to raise eyebrows is that the university is asking permission in advance to close streets: “9th street and public streets, alleys and easements between 9th and 8th streets bounded by North Virginia Street and Evans Avenue may be abandoned and/or closed to public vehicular traffic to facilitate the objectives of the [University of Nevada Regional Center Plan].”

Reno Little Theater is 80 years old. The octogenarian theater company is launching its new season with a birthday party scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 11, at 6:30 p.m., at the company’s still relatively new building, 147 E. Pueblo St., which opened in 2012.

“It’s really exciting for us to celebrate milestones, and when we were in our 75th [season], our focus was on getting this building open, so we really didn’t get to party as much as we were hoping to,” said McKenzi Swinehart, RLT’s director of programs and development. “So we decided for the 80th to make sure we had a good celebration.”

The event will begin with a cocktail hour, including champagne and hors d’oeuvres. At 7:30 p.m., there will be performances from scenes and musical numbers from what Swinehart describes as “shows that have some kind of significance in RLT history that people might not know about.” This includes a duet from The Boyfriend, which, in 1958, became the first musical produced at RLT. The theater’s lobby will be decorated with items from RLT’s archive housed at the University of Nevada, Reno’s special collections, including dozens of old photos and newspaper articles and reviews.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture recently announced awards for 14 projects to promote specialty crops in the state totaling just over $301,000. The funds come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and NDA public information officer Bob Conrad said that the goal is to “enhance the competitive nature of specialty crops” and to “increase the consumption of specialty crops at the local level.”

There are a variety of efforts that will be funded through these grants, including a study to increase pumpkin production in the state with Lazy P Adventure Farm in Winnemucca; a project to increase online presence of Nevada specialty crops with videos featuring producers, growers and retailers; and a project to help specialty crop producers with food safety, farm planning and marketing. He’s the sheriff Only a few weeks till early voting. Here’s how the race for Washoe County Sheriff is shaping up.

If recent history is any indication, the margin of victory in the Washoe County Sheriff’s race will be lopsided. by Winners have trampled over their Riley Snyder opponents by an average of 40 percentage points on Election Day. But after a 20-point primary victory for former Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen over establishment-backed Tim Kuzanek, the stage is set for what could be one of the most competitive sheriff’s races in recent memory.

Kuzanek has played up his establishment credentials, often referring to his institutional knowledge and relationships with key local political players.

Add in a renewed interest in police conduct and ethics after the recent protests in Ferguson, Missouri, and the normally staid sheriff’s race has taken on a much more noticeable role than past years.

“Allen’s victory, and the margin of that victory, really surprised the status quo set of candidates,” University of Nevada, Reno political science professor Erik Herzik said.

Much of the attention comes from Allen’s unusual candidacy—the former Highway Patrol spokesman and Nevada Air National Guard veteran successfully challenged a

history of establishment candidates steamrolling their way to victory with his primary night victory in July.

(Sheriff Michael Haley, for example, won 80 percent of the vote in 2006 and ran unopposed four years later.)

Allen touts his experience with community-oriented groups like the Special Olympics and the Nevada Humane Society as evidence of how his administration would be run.

He said the sheriff’s office needs to be filled by someone interested in being a community leader, not just a bureaucrat.

“The only way I can make a difference is to hear concerns from the public,” he said. “And I’m not going to do that by sitting at 911 Parr Boulevard [the sheriff’s office and regional jail] every day.”

His plans include forming a “green-ribbon” commission with deputies, community leaders and other interested parties to talk about important local issues, as well as assigning individual deputies to local advisory boards to better foster community relations. He’s also considering an annual “State of the County” address to improve the department’s visibility and transparency.

Allen’s plan to alleviate lost positions after numerous budget cuts is to recruit around 60 community members and former deputies to volunteer and reduce workload.

But Allen is without a doubt

the race’s outsider, especially when compared to Kuzanek. A 21-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, Kuzanek has worked his way up from patrolman to undersheriff, and wields a much wider array of endorsements, including state lawmakers of both parties, local advocacy groups, Reno Mayor Bob Cashell and Sheriff Haley.

It’s understandable that Kuzanek has played up his establishment credentials throughout the race, often referring to his institutional knowledge and established relationships with key local political players. He’s noted his involvement in managing the department’s $83 million dollar budget, and his past as the department’s liaison to the state legislature.

Kuzanek’s campaign has made him seem like the “boring, safe choice,” according to Herzik.

By no means has Kuzanek shied away from his résumé, which includes helping the founding of a Reno counter-terrorism fusion center and overseeing the development and execution of the department’s current crime mapping and tracking system.

Unlike the dramatic changes promised by Allen, Kuzanek argues that by electing him, voters will have a steady hand in place to continue the work of the sheriff’s department.

“If there’s any desire to change for the sake of change, I don’t see that as being a benefit to the citizens of Washoe County,” he said. “I bring stability, and I bring the experience that provides the opportunity to be decisive in my role.”

In terms of issues facing the sheriff’s office, Allen and Kuzanek are similar—both have similar views toward the sheriff’s office accepting surplus military equipment through the Department of Defense’s 1033 program, both share similar cautious views about medical marijuana, and both repeated rhetoric about the importance of community-oriented policing.

Kuzanek and Allen additionally favor implementing a body-camera program for the sheriff’s office that would record police conduct and behavior. Though both signaled caution about the legal and budgetary issues that need to be worked out before such a program is implemented, both agreed body cameras are necessary for the future.

The difference is in how each sees the role of sheriff. Allen sees it as a more prominent and public role, while Kuzanek sees it as a more bureaucratic and administrative-heavy job balanced with community outreach.

“You have to know what the rules are,” Kuzanek said. “You have to lead the men and women of the agency

in the appropriate direction, and you have to work with sister agencies in the region as well.”

Allen said that he’s heard from a number of people—not only in the sheriff’s office but also in the community—who are ready for change.

“There’s some value in bringing somebody with new perspectives and new ideas and a new way of doing business,” he said. “And that’s what I bring to the race.”

During a recent debate hosted by the Reno Gazette-Journal and KNPB Channel 5, the two traded barbs over what they perceived to be their opponent’s weakness: Allen with a lack of budgetary experience, and Kuzanek lacking community involvement.

Allen said he’s had plenty of experience in handling the $4.1 million budget as the vice-president of the Nevada Humane Society’s executive board, and that he would want to delegate primary budget duties to another deputy in his administration.

Kuzanek points toward his involvement in the “Guns and Hoses” charitable golf game between police and firefighters that has raised several thousand dollars for the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation.

A victory for Allen would buck historical trends, as the majority of elected sheriffs have served as the undersheriff, like Kuzanek, before being elected. Only two—Richard Kirkland and Robert Galli—since

1952 have been elected without previously working in the sheriff’s office, and both served as local chiefs of police before being elected.

Herzik said after Kirkland’s election to sheriff in 1995, suspicion and trust issues came from deputies wary of working with the “outsider” Kirkland. Allen said he’s already selected an undersheriff, John Spencer, who retired from the department in 2013, to help manage internal affairs and play the role of “CEO” for the department.

National protests over alleged police misconduct and brutality could help Allen, who is viewed as a change from the status quo, but Herzik questioned if general attitude changes would be enough to drive Nevada voters to the polls in a presumed lowturnout, midterm election year.

Despite Allen’s name recognition and larger margin of victory in the primary, Herzik said the longer march to the general election gives Kuzanek a chance to make up the 18-point gap.

Voter recognition only goes so far, even in down-ballot races, he said. Ω

Research to convert manure into fuel

If there’s one thing in abundance at a dairy farm, it’s cows, and those cows produce quite a bit of manure—more than 80 pounds per day, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. And by Sage Leehey what to do with that manure can be a problem.

Many farmers use it as fertilizer, but runoff from the fields when it rains s age l@ means a lot of it ends up in our waterways and causes many issues, including news review.c om algal blooms. University of Nevada, Reno chemical engineering associate professor Charles Coronella is the principal investigator on a research project to convert biomass—the manure—into a solid fuel that can then be used to generate electricity.

“What we are doing now is trying to build a continuous prototype for doing hydrothermal carbonization, so that’s the first step of this process— converting manure into power,” Coronella said. “In hydrothermal processing, what we do is we take—I’m going to call it biomass; it’s a nicer word than manure—take biomass and cook it in hot, compressed water. This is at a temperature of about 250 degrees C, about 500 degrees F. If you keep the pressure high enough—the pressure is about 50 atmospheres—the water will stay as a liquid. So we have liquid water at very high temperature and pressure, which converts the biomass into something that looks an awful lot like lignite or a type of a coal.”

The project is funded for two years by a grant from the Western Sun Grant Consortium. Researchers from the Desert Research Institute, UNR Cooperative Extension specialists, a California-based company that specializes in biomass-fueled generators, a small business interested in commercializing the process, and other UNR researchers are all involved with the project. Coronella said they’re working with biomass from cows at the UNR Cooperative Extension, but he hopes to work with local farmers later on so that they can contribute their experience to the research as well.

Coronella said that university researchers have been looking into hydroFor more information, thermal carbonization for five or six years now and are optimistic about the visit www.unr.edu/ cme. results of this project.

“We have the idea of using it for different kinds of wastes,” Coronella said. “My first favorite biomass is wastewater sludge. Definitely can be used there. For example, in Reno, the wastewater treatment plant, they make about 120 tons a day, every day, of sludge, so this could be used to process that instead of sending it out to the landfill. It can also be used for a lot of different kinds of food wastes, so for example, restaurants throw out an amazing amount of food. ... This would be an alternative to composting it.”

After the biomass is made into a charcoal-like fuel, it will be put into a gasifier—a partial combustion process that will turn the solid fuel into a fuel gas. That can then be burned in a combustion engine to generate electricity.

The goal is to produce 10 kilowatts of electricity. Coronella said that the solid fuel could also be burned and used for cooking, but he doesn’t imagine many people would be interested in using a fuel made from manure for cooking purposes, despite it being odorless.

Anytime you burn something there are emissions of some kind, so the researchers will measure those throughout the project. They will also be doing a life cycle analysis, which will identify any potential environmental impacts, but Coronella said that, if they are successful in generating a renewable fuel, there will be a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The U.S. Empire today is the largest in world history with 1,100 military bases and outposts spreading over the globe, dwarfing the Alexander, Roman, Ottoman, Hapsburg, Spanish and British empires of yesteryear.

President Obama has urged Americans to shift attention to Asia but surreptitiously has increased militarism in Africa from A to Z (Algeria to Zambia). Africa swarms with U.S. military.

Tom Dispatch, social media critic, reports, “Base construction, security cooperation engagements, training exercises, advisory deployments, special operations missions, and a growing logistics network, all undeniable evidence of expansion.”

Above all, the ever-expanding American empire is the most destructive in history and the greatest disturber of peace in the world—a warmonger without parallel.

William Randolph Hearst, who epitomized yellow journalism, boasted that the 20th century was the American Century. It was. And it will doubtless be the same in the 21st century, too.

William Blum, historian of the U.S. Empire, published a book in 2000, Rogue State, recording the terrible military history of America since World War II. America has: • Dropped bombs on 30 countries.

• Tried to oust 50 governments.

• Tried to kill 50 heads of state.

• Messed with democratic elections in 30 countries.

• Tried to suppress populist movements in 20 nations.

The list of Blum’s examples is too long to mention all of them, but the major ones are cited in this article.

To begin with, U.S. empire building is nearly as old as the Republic. The “sainted” Thomas Jefferson, slaveholder, coveted all of North America for the United States. When the War of 1812 broke out, the great imperialist wrote to a friend: “The acquisition of Canada this year, as far as the neighborhood of Quebec, will be a mere matter of marching, and will give us experience for the attack of Halifax, the next and final expulsion of England from the American continent.”

No one hates monarchies or denounces religion more than I do. I agree with the great polemicist Diderot: “Men will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest.” But Jefferson’s comment is a frightful example of the expansionist spirit that has so often gripped America.

Forty years later, it became known as Manifest Destiny, the notion that American settlers were destined to expand across the continent. Its twin themes: • The American people are exceptional and their institutions unique.

• America’s mission is to spread that superior civilization to the West.

Prominent Americans like Lincoln and Grant rejected Manifest Destiny. So did the Whigs, an important political party in the 19th Century. Historian Daniel Howe writes: “American imperialism did not represent an American consensus. ... Whigs saw America’s moral mission as one of democratic example rather than one of conquest.” The Whigs were right, but the “losers” don’t determine history.

The rhetoric of Manifest Destiny was used by Democrats to justify the U.S.-instigated Mexican War (1846-1848). America won that war, seizing California and other vast tracts of land in the West. The seizure fulfilled the Manifest Destiny boast to stretch the country from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

Other manifest destinarians wanted to grab a large part of present day British Columbia with their slogan “fiftyfour forty or fight,” referring to the 54/40 north parallel across the Pacific Northwest.

President Polk, abandoning his earlier position favoring 54/40 because he declined to fight two wars simultaneously, accepted a compromise at the 49th parallel. (The boundary of Canada and the United States today.)

Comedian Dave Barry cracked about the meaning of the Monroe Doctrine: “Other nations are not allowed to mess around with the internal affairs of nations in the hemisphere. But we are.” Or, as William Blum notes, “The U.S. operates an intervention machine.”

To Native Americans, the colonists and their American successors stole the vast territory of their ancestors.

Roger Williams, great Rhode Island exponent of the separation of church and state, wrote a tract in 1632 questioning the right of what became the state of Massachusetts to the land “without first buying it from the Indians.”

The Philippine-American War (1899-1902) predated World War I, but the U.S. role was expansionism.

America acquired the Philippines from Spain after the SpanishAmerican War. The Filipinos, happily seeing Spanish shackles thrown off, now wanted independence from the United States. America brutally suppressed that desire.

The United States led the western invasion (1918-1920) of the infant Soviet Union “to strangle it at its birth,” as Churchill phrased it. The alliance sought to prevent the Russian Revolution from removing one-sixth of the world’s land surface from capitalist exploitation. Fortunately, it failed.

The U.S. intervened in the Chinese civil war after World War II, taking the wrong side by backing the corrupt Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalists against Mao Zedong’s communist social welfare revolution.

The Korean War was fought between North and South Korea from 1950 to 1953. It arose from the division of Korea at the end of World War II and the start of the Cold War between the United States and Russia.

It was an “era of corrupt, reactionary and ruthless governments in the South and the huge, war-crime filled American military intervention,” Blum notes.

One of the major cases of U.S. meddling abroad occurred in Iran in 1953. The CIA engineered a coup, overthrowing the leftist Mossadegh and installing the reactionary Shah of Iran as absolute monarch.

Mossadegh rightly wanted to nationalize the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (now BP). The United States wrongly did not. So Operation Boot booted Mossadegh. Iranians have hated America ever since. The OPINION

indiscriminately, have caused more casualties in the Syrian civil war than in the 2006 Lebanon conflict when Israel’s heavy use of the weapons hastened the treaty banning them two years later.”

Another appalling U.S. intervention occurred in Cuba during the anti-communist jihad. It was engineered by the bogus liberal President Kennedy whose CIA invaded Cuba in 1961 to topple the communist Fidel Castro. Justice prevailed. The Bay of Pigs invasion was crushed in three days.

Never mind that Castro produced a better and more liberal society than America. Cuba enacted universal health care. America did not and probably never will in this obscenely capitalist country.

original Cabinet name was the War Department, which it obviously was, but euphemistically renamed the Defense Department, which it obviously is not.

The next U.S. meddling folly occurred in Vietnam, part of the anticommunist crusade. It was a war that never should have been fought yet lasted 21 years, from 1954 to 1975.

It pitted the government of North Vietnam (Viet Cong) against South Vietnam. North Vietnam, which defeated the French colonial administration in 1954, naturally wanted to unify the north and south into one communist nation.

That conflict was none of the U.S.’s business, yet it sent 500,000 troops there with 58,200 of them killed. In one of the most gratuitous assaults in history, America destroyed hundreds of North Vietnamese villages while dropping napalm and subjected Cambodia and Laos to vicious carpet-bombing.

Death toll: hundreds of thousands of civilians. Martin Luther King summed up the U.S. role in Vietnam: “The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today: my own government. I cannot be silent about it.” He wasn’t. “If America’s soul becomes totally poisoned, part of the autopsy must read Vietnam,” he declared. “A nation that continues to year after year spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”

••• Ever-new technology rendered obsolete the mustard gas used by the U.S. in World War I. Cluster bombs, nerve gas and Agent Orange are modern lethal devices. Cluster bombs, dropped from U.S. planes, would break open in midair and scatter 200 bomblets. These exploded, shooting out shards of jagged steel shrapnel.

U.S. cluster bombs were dropped on Yugoslavia in 1999, laughably titled “Operation Bomb for Humanity.” President Clinton unleashed the cruelty to prevent Slobodan Milosevic from withdrawing the province of Kosovo from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The fact that Milosevic was a dictator was of no concern to America.

follow U.S. orders.

Washington’s point of view, of nationalizing U.S.-based United Fruit and legalizing the Communist Party. The takeover regime slaughtered 200,000 indigenous Guatemalans. The U.S. backed Guatemala death squads. In one province a “silent Holocaust” operated on military bases. They maintained crematoriums, chopped off limbs, singed the flesh and administered electric shocks.

• Sukarno of Indonesia was an excellent president in the late 1950s. This the U.S. could not abide.

Sukarno made the “mistake” of traveling to China and Russia. Another “bigger mistake”: He nationalized private holdings of the former Dutch masters. So the CIA plotted to assassinate him. He was blackmailed with a phony sex scandal. Fortuitously, Sukarno survived all the chicanery.

• Patrice Lumumba became Congo’s first prime minister in 1960 after independence from Belgium. Because he justifiably wanted economic liberation from Belgian injustices heaped on the natives, he was labeled a communist.

Lumumba was assassinated with CIA connivance on orders of President Eisenhower.

• Juan Bosch was elected president of the Dominican Republic in 1965.

He called for land reform, low-rent housing and modest nationalization of business. This was “creeping” socialism leading to “dreaded” communism. So the U.S. sent in 23,000 troops to crush efforts to keep him in office.

• Prince Sihanouk of Cambodia refused to be a client of Washington.

So his country paid the price: secret carpet bombing in 1969-1970 ordered by war criminal President Nixon at the urging of fellow war criminal, his adviser Henry Kissinger. Sihanouk was overthrown in a coup engineered

by Washington in 1970. Five years later, Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge took power, inflicting even greater misery on Cambodia. Nevertheless, the U.S. supported the Khmer Rouge savages.

• Leftist Maurice Bishop took power in minuscule Grenada in 1979 after a coup. The Reagan administration began destabilization tactics with outrageous lies and disinformation.

Then in 1983 the U.S. invaded the powerless and impoverished nation and installed leaders who would

American economic sanctions were imposed on Iraq 13 years before the war, depriving families of vital medicines. Then America invaded with “shock and awe,” killing and destroying. After 10 years of war, it decamped, leaving a frightful legacy of death, destruction and despair.

America is left with the shame and stain of one of the least justifiable wars in history. It was illegal, unconstitutional and genocidal.

Saddam Hussein was a dictator, but he controlled the sectarian tensions and hatreds in Iraq. His ouster and the departure of Americans left the country at loggerheads: Shiites vs.

Sunnis, Arabs vs. Kurds, Islamists vs. al-Qaida. The tattered country has been left with deadly suicide bombings, car bombings and blown-up buildings.

The war toll was high: 4,500 Americans killed and 30,000 wounded. About 100,000 Iraqi civilians were killed and hundreds of thousands were displaced. Cost to U.S. taxpayers: $2.2 trillion. Since President G.W. Bush and his evil Vice President Cheney ordered the invasions, they are war criminals.

The corporate press urged the war. The Washington Post and New York Times led the cheerleading.

Republicans and Democrats in Congress overwhelmingly passed a resolution authorizing use of military force.

While presidents bear the burden of this lengthy indictment, never forget that Congress has played a horrendous role in the U.S. mayhem.

It is packed with cretins who are unacknowledged terrorists.

Above all, the everexpanding American empire is the most destructive in history and the greatest disturber of peace in the world—a warmonger without parallel.

America’s anti-communist madness reached an apogee in 1973 when the murderous General Pinochet overthrew Salvador Allende, the highly popular and democratically elected president of Chile. No matter to the U.S. Allende was a Marxist.

The CIA led the charge. Secretary of State Kissinger exulted.

On and on it goes. The U.S. invaded Panama in 1989, sending its mad bombers to blast a large tenement barrio in Panama City. Some 15,000 citizens were left homeless. Why? To oust Manuel Noriega on trumped up charges of drug trafficking.

For brevity’s sake, let’s summarize these atrocities: • In 1954 a CIA-backed coup ousted the democratically elected president of Guatemala, Jacobo Arbenz. He made the mistake, from |

President Obama heaps irony on irony. The Nobel Peace Prize winner has re-invaded Iraq and is trying to topple the government of Cuba.

The Great Liberal Betrayer returned to Iraq with air strikes, ground troops and advisers. All of Iraq’s immense problems were caused by the United States. They will not be solved by re-entry into that cauldron.

His aim is to thwart Sunni (caliphate) rebels with drones and fighter jets by destroying their positions in Iraq.

The ground troops are what Obama calls “a humanitarian effort” to protect the U.S. consulate in Erbil.

Maureen Dowd, New York Times columnist, sums up the absurdity: “Our boneheaded meddling just creates ever-more-virulent monsters.

years, the ultimate mission creep in a country smaller than Texas on the other side of the world.” Obama has dispatched hundreds of soldiers to fix something that couldn’t be fixed with hundreds of thousands of troops.

Yet Obama says it is “a long-term project,” which means the U.S. could be there for years. Re-entry into Iraq destroys what little moral authority he had left.

Obama is also casual about torture. At a recent press briefing, he admitted, “We tortured some folks.”

That is a terrible way to describe a disgraceful policy. As William Pitt wrote for Truthout: “Torture is a stain on the soul of this nation.”

Meanwhile, Obama is scheming to overthrow the government of harmless Cuba. An investigation by the Associated Press revealed that since 2009 his administration has secretly been dispatching young Latin Americans to Cuba to foment rebellion. Venezuelan, Costa Rican and Peruvians pose as tourists while scouting for potential agitators.

Surely the Obama administration has better things to do for the American people like pushing passage of the Equal Rights Amendment for women, stopping clandestine spying on Americans, urging universal health care and demanding the end of corporate tax dodging at home and abroad.

It is hard to match the bleak vision of war written by Chris Hedges in the online TruthDig. He wrote a scathing indictment of senseless wars and their senseless perversities. Hedges, as correspondent for the New York Times for 10 years, has seen war up close. Here is his biting truth:

Civilians and combatants merge into one detested, nameless, faceless mass.

The psychological leap to murder is short. And murder happens every day in Afganistan. It happens in drone strikes, artillery bombardments, airstrikes, missile attacks and the withering suppressing fire unleashed in villages by belt-fed machine guns. “... Robert Bales, a U.S. Army staff sergeant who allegedly killed 16 civilians in two Afghan villages, including nine children, is not an anomaly. ... We kill children nearly every day in Afghanistan.”

Hedges related the “constant search in all wars to find new perversities, new forms of death” in an “effort to ward off the boredom of routine death. This is why during the war in El Salvador the death squads and soldiers would cut off the genitals of those they killed and stuff

them in the mouths of the corpses.

This is why we reporters in Bosnia would find bodies crucified on the sides of barns or decapitated. This is why U.S. Marines have urinated on dead Taliban fighters. Those slain in combat are treated as trophies by their killers, turned into grotesque pieces of performance art.”

The United States supports Israel with large amounts of money and weapons to kill Palestinians and destroy their homes, mosques and buildings.

For Israel’s latest assault on Gaza, President Obama signed an act of Congress giving Israel $225 million in emergency aid. On top of that, the Americans give Israel a $3 billion gift every year. With a powerful friend like the U.S., Israel can ignore worldwide denunciation of its multiple invasions of Gaza.

Marjorie Cohn, law professor in San Diego, is blunt: “U.S. officials abet the commission of war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity

by Israeli officials, battle commanders and military forces.” Israel, a nation of eight million, deals violence to a small strip of Gaza packed with 1.8 million people living in dire poverty.

Gideon Levy, columnist for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, writes: “Israel should be condemned and punished for creating insufferable life under occupation” and for continued abuse of an entire people. In another article, Levy writes: “The slogan of the Mafia [killing] has become official Israeli policy.”

Yes, Palestinians fire rockets.

But Israel continues to build illegal settlements and infrastructure on Palestinian land. As Noam Chomsky notes, it does so to “integrate into Israel whatever might be of value, meanwhile consigning Palestinians to unviable cantons and subjecting them to repression and violence.”

Aside from all his brutality and terrorism, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu sets the tone for his people who cheerfully call savage Israeli invasions “mowing the lawn.” l i byA

As with Hussein, Colonel Qaddafi was a Libyan dictator, but he held together the fractious tribes and militias. Today, three years after his ouster, Libya seethes with violence, threatening a civil war and a portending long-term destabilization in North Africa.

Qaddafi’s crime? He had overthrown a rich ruling clique and instituted a welfare state. So the U.S. declared that he had to go. In 1981 U.S. aircraft shot down two Libyan planes in Libyan air space.

Five years later, a Qaddafi

residence was bombed. He faced assassination attempts, economic sanctions, efforts to overthrow him and a disinformation campaign full of enormous lies. All deservedly failed.

••• Eugene McCarraher, Villanova history professor, wrote: “Creation of a post-imperial identity could be a liberating thing for Americans. To do so, however, they will have to forsake the dreams of empire and the hallucination of manifest destiny.”

Unfortunately, President Obama will not forsake that dream, a dream for the greater good of America and of mankind. He hasn’t got the wisdom to do otherwise. Moreover, reactionary advisers surround him. As Edmund Burke knew: “A great empire and little minds go ill together.”

The United States, except for World War II, has almost always been on the wrong side of history when it comes to war, gratuitous invasions, bombings, assassinations and toppling of governments.

America badly needs a Truth Commission such as South Africa, Guatemala and El Salvador created to reveal the crimes of their governments. A truth commission would expose outrageous claims like that of President Clinton: “Americans are targets of terrorism ... because we act to advance peace and democracy.”

As Barbara Tuchman wrote in “The March of Folly” in 1984: “Rejection of reason is the prime characteristic of folly … to recognize error, to cut losses, to alter course, is the most repugnant option in government.” Ω

health, and the like, rather than with levitating feathers, imitating someone else’s appearance and “obliviating” someone’s memory.

Unsurprisingly, like so many other subcultures, Paganism depicted in Hollywood is a product of misconceptions and vicious ignorance. From the bubbly, occasionally evil witch Willow on Joss Whedon’s television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer to the three spirit-stealing sorceresses from the 1993 cult-favorite Hocus Pocus, the storm of falsehoods has run rampant.

Though magic is a common instrument in Paganism, it isn’t a required one. The use of magic, as well as methods of worship, and motivation varies between different paths and individuals.

“Some do it for the magic, others the healing, and some people just like to get together and find fellowship,” says Shadow of the Nine Grays, a practicing Pagan.

While many Pagans in the area prefer to worship alone, others gather to gain kinship.

The Northern Nevada Pagan Pride Day gives an opportunity for Pagans to meet others in the community and celebrate their culture together. But the event also does philanthropy, with a food and coat drive this year to benefit the We Care Volunteers, a charitable organization that provides meals and shelter to the homeless and working poor.

The annual Pagan pride event held in the fall is in conjunction with the Pagan Pride Project (often shortened to PPP), an association that assists in coordinating similar events internationally, within a specific time frame. PPP works to bring Pagans together with each other and with the rest of the general public. The festivities differ from place to place, but each one partakes in a public ritual and a food drive, to support the local citizens and give a more accurate depiction of Paganism to the masses. The 13th annual Reno and Sparks Pagan Pride Day event occurred on Sept. 6. While the turnout was modest, whatever it lacked in attendance was certainly compensated in spirit.

From the perspective of someone outside of the practicing Pagan populace in Reno, the pride festival was easily overwhelming, sparking sensory explosions from the wafting smells of incense, multiple symbols prevalent around the booths, and, notably, the good deal of people dressed in medieval attire.

But, if you were brave, you could venture to the main table, situated next to a stockade and surrounded by a band of pirates and find a warm welcome from Nancy Davidson, a member of the event’s planning committee who was armed with information and an eagerness to

open up the world of Paganism to an uninitiated audience.

“Paganism has been a homecoming to me,” said Davidson. She began subscribing to Paganism in 2005. “It has taken my awareness in life one step further, by helping the planet to sustain itself and be a good force in the world, while realizing that there is something bigger than ourselves out there.”

The same attitude exuded throughout the rest of the crowd, a homogenous, open-minded mix of Pagans, Christians, witches, and those simply along to foster support for diversity.

What exactly is paganism? It really depends on who you ask.

Some individuals categorize pagans as anyone who doesn’t identify as a follower of the “big three” religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam, while others prefer a more specific definition that addresses those who worship pre-Christian deities and also have a reverence for the Earth and natural forces.

If the whole idea sounds hazy and ambiguous, it’s because it is.

Like the term “Christianity,” Paganism acts as an umbrella term that encompasses numerous directions or paths of worship, such as Wiccan, Greek, Druid and Celtic, and can also act as a term for those who prescribe to Paganism and don’t wish to isolate themselves on one specific denomination.

Several of the paths that fall under Paganism deal with casting spells, making potions and general magic (or magick). But the practice commonly deals with blessings, good

Unfortunately, this progressive approach isn’t exactly the norm for Pagans in dealings with the general public.

From confronting individuals belittling Pagan beliefs of students in public schools to distributing a pamphlet at their own festival of a guide for employers with Pagans in the workplace, it’s clear that there is still a battle being fought to gain acceptance of Paganism in the Reno area. But that doesn’t mean that times haven’t improved.

A prime example of this comes from Sarah Serpa, who has found healing with unconventional techniques as a way to bridge the gap between Pagans and non-followers.

Serpa, a healer and third-degree high priestess, practices chi gong healing, a technique used to pinpoint and correct underlying disharmony, balance life energy, or chi, and improve health. Through her healings, she’s formed connections with a variety of people from different backgrounds.

One friend of Serpa’s who received treatment was Catholic, and began working with Serpa a few months ago to help alleviate issues with her pain and diabetes, much to the unsurprising disapproval of her Catholic relatives. However, once positive results became evident, her family gradually developed a much less judgmental, accepting attitude, breaking down barriers between convictions that were supposedly in direct opposition of each other.

Moreover, as Paganism has become farther-reaching and its principles more widely taught, the abrasive discord between its followers and their opponents has slowly started to dissipate.

“It’s not just the people who practice Paganism who are open to this stuff anymore, and it’s all becoming more and more accepted over time,” says Serpa.

Chalk it up

Nathaniel Benjamin Chalk art is a public, and somewhat overlooked, artistic medium. For a long time, chalk by was the tool of choice for creating signs Ashley for eateries, markets, cafes and other Hennefer community spaces. That style is making a comeback through artisan businesses or companies who favor a rustic aesthetic.

As such, there’s now a demand for artists who have a mastery of chalk. Great Basin Community Food Co-op, where you’ll see his work on the signs inside and outside the store. He also creates signage for Too Soul Tea Co., Caliber Salon and Brewer’s Cabinet, among other establishments around town. He has used chalk to draw murals on buildings, too, like the outside of his home.

Benjamin traveled around for several years before deciding to stay in Reno, where he’s been now for two and a half years. “It started to feel like home,” he says.

A forestry major at the University of Nevada, Reno, Benjamin likes the flexibility that being a working artist provides.

“I wanted to work outside,” he says of his chosen career path. “This dream job just fell into my life.” He plans on merging forestry and art once he’s completed his degree.

Benjamin is an artist in “a variety of mediums,” he says, including painting and photography. Until recently, he didn’t “self-promote,” instead choosing to explore different styles and techniques. His first gallery art show, Calibration, opened on Oct. 8 at A an Art. After originally studying graphic design in college, Benjamin found the digital aspect of it restricting. He prefers making tactile art, including wood carving and printmaking. Regardless, he says that “in order to do anything, you have to be able to draw.”

He uses the produce at the co-op for reference—“this is why people have always painted bowls of fruit,” he says—and finds fonts online to use as inspiration for his typography. Before starting a piece, he does a bit of informal planning. An entire blackboard ends up being filled with words and images.

“I have the process down now,” he says.

“I pick where the words are going down and where the drawings are going to be.”

He uses tools to hold the chalk and ensure that he doesn’t smear his work as he’s drawing.

As a result, the signs have a pleasant and controlled ruggedness to them, and the texture of the blackboard emerges through

the chalk. The bright colors and white chalk stands out starkly against the black, and it’s easily readable both near and far.

Benjamin uses an array of chalk colors to create gradients, and says it takes practice to “divide objects into colors, and to transition from light to dark.”

Benjamin creates at least one new sign a week, but it often turns out to be more. On Tuesdays, he makes a new produce sign at the food co-op, and he’s frequently called in to work on other pieces elsewhere in town.

Due to the nature of chalk, it’s a “temporary” medium, Benjamin says. He takes photos of his signs to document them, and posts them on his Facebook page.

“It’s a gift and a curse,” he says of working in this medium. “It’s really beautiful to be able to work on one board for a year and see it change over time.

It’s constantly evolving and changing. It’s totally impermanent.” Ω

Traditional Thai cooking methods are stewing, baking or grilling. Frying, stir-frying and deep-frying techniques are a result of Chinese influences on Thai cuisine. Thai curries are a modification of Indian curries and another example of the Thai way of adapting foreign food by mimicking cooking methods and substituting ingredients.

Lanna has a good variety on its menu, with traditional appetizers ($6-$8), salads ($10-$15), curry ($11.95-$15), and soup ($10-$15), and a good selection of traditional entrees ($10-$15). A proper Thai meal will have several dishes and a bowl of rice, creating a harmony of tastes and textures with each bite.

A noodle salad ($10), just coming on the menu, was my first adventure: thin rice noodles with fresh ginger, Thai chilies, green and red bell peppers, green onions, a little tofu and chicken, and a light brown sauce that was a bit tart but also finished savory—these are signature Thai flavors.

Goong Opp Woon Sen ($15) is a traditional dish: bean noodles with shrimp, scallions, peppercorn, garlic, green onions, ginger and cilantro root.

It’s a medley of textures and flavors, defining the elegance and flavors of this food. It congealed with aromatic tastes and textures ranging from smooth to chewy, satisfying as well as intriguing to the palate.

Salmon bites ($12) were next and the most unique dish I tried. Little morsels of salmon rolled in corn starch, pan fried and steamed and served with Pim’s homemade Thai “Teriyaki” sauce, Korean mushrooms, garlic and ginger. Again, aromatic flavors with a hint of sweet caused these salmon bites to almost melt in my mouth, turning somewhat creamlike with the thick sauce.

Since I like heat, curry was the next obvious choice, and I went for the “five star”—the hottest.

Panang beef ($11.95) carries with it flavors and aromas of Malaysia, India and Burma.

Served over white rice, it starts with a coconut milk base, then adds garlic, ginger, cumin, turmeric, coriander, red chili, cayenne pepper, chili flakes, onion, soy sauce, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and lime juice for a typhoon of flavors that builds in intensity with every bite. Death Valley in mid-July is cool by comparison.

There’s a simple wine list with a few wines by-the-glass ($7-$8), two Thai beers and a couple of Chinese beers in the bottle ($5).

GM Glenn Marshall offered me a glass of Cabernache ($60) from Daviana Vineyard in Napa. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, 57 percent, and Grenache, 43 percent, shows lush aromas of licorice-infused raspberries, violets, strawberry jam, cinnamon and pepper. The well-balanced mid-palate is dominated by black cherries, mint, pomegranate, mocha, smoky oak and a well-structured savory finish.

For dessert, mango sticky rice ($6) is a popular dish in Southeast Asia in countries such as Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. It’s a dessert dish where sticky rice is cooked by steaming, and sweetened with coconut milk and sugar. Slices of mango are put on the plate, and then you enjoy.

For anyone with a sweet tooth, this is nirvana.

Thai food is harmony. It is a blend between centuries-old Western and Eastern influences that make it into something unique. Ω

A Walk Among the Tombstones

Gone Girl David Fincher set out to make the nastiest, most poisonous movie about marriages gone bad ever made with Gone Girl. I think he succeeded.

Fincher and Gillian Flynn, the author of the novel and screenplay, came up with a toxic cocktail, laced with dark humor, scabrous satire and blistering performances.

Anybody who has suffered through a bad by relationship, or doubts aspects of the one Bob Grimm they’re in, will equate Gone Girl to a bound stack of tabloid magazines hitting you bgrimm@ newsr eview.c om square on the chin.

On the day of his fifth anniversary, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) returns to his home after sulking at the bar he owns with his sister (a funny Carrie Coon) to discover his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), is missing.

Nick calls the police and the in-laws, and quickly finds himself sucked up in a media circus that leaves him dazed and confused.

His demeanor in public is a strange combination of a malaise and ill-timed smiles.

Yeah … he’s a suspect.

Through a series of narrated flashbacks, we hear the story of the Flynne marriage from Amy’s perspective, chronicled in her diary. Everything started sweet enough, with the two of them being impossibly perfect for each other. Family deaths, money troubles and lapses in moral judgment leave them stricken with loathing and regret by the time the “wood” anniversary has arrived.

Nick is skewered on TV by a Nancy Gracetype journalist (a snooty Missi Pyle) and the detectives investigating his case (the deadpan Kim Dickens and Patrick Fugit) have little faith in his innocence. The evidence against Nick is quite daunting, and it piles up. The whole thing plays a lot like the Scott Peterson case of 12 years ago involving a husband who killed his pregnant wife and dumped her body in San Francisco Bay.

Then, at about the halfway point, the movie goes completely, wonderfully insane.

For those unaware of the plot twist, my best advice to you is that you should accept it— even though it’s totally bug nuts—sit back, and enjoy the rest of this messed-up ride.

Anybody who goes to this movie thinking they’re going to see something grounded in reality will be setting themselves up for disappointment. Gone Girl is nightmarish fantasy, a hyper-sensationalized “what-if” that thrives on its implausibility. Had this movie tried to stick closer to reality, it would’ve killed too much of the fun.

Pike, a British actress perhaps known best for Jack Reacher, gets the role of a lifetime with Amy, and she devours it. We see many faces of Amy, some of them a pure, divine delight and others as monstrous as Godzilla. What we see early in Amy’s story doesn’t prepare us for what comes later. Pike makes the earthquake-like shifts in Amy a wondrous cinematic feat.

Often the victim of unjust tabloid garbage and internet slagging, there’s nobody better cast than Affleck as Nick. When Nick is required to show media fatigue, Affleck need only pull from his personal Battfleck or Bennifer experiences to hit the right notes. He has an eerie resemblance to Scott Peterson, which helps. Most of all, he shows what’s been true all along in his career: He’s a fine actor capable of great nuance, a movie star of the highest order.

With this effort, Fincher erases the waste of time that was his adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and gets back to the business of being one of the world’s finest directors. As he did with his take on Fight Club, Fincher gets to the heart of the novel he’s working with, and does the book more than justice. He makes a helluva good-looking movie, and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross put together a score that amazes.

So, all of you married folks approaching the wood anniversary, beware what shows up in your gift box. If it’s Punch and Judy dolls, you need to head for the hills. Gone Girl will make many of us laugh (especially the single and divorced folks), a few of us cringe, and cause nightmares for those unsteady couples with rings on their fingers. Ω

Liam Neeson plays a former policeman and recovering alcoholic in director Scott Frank’s sometimes interesting and always unpleasant serial killer drama. Neeson’s Matt Scudder, after accidentally killing a civilian during a shootout, has gone rogue since his days on the force. Eight years have passed, and while he’s quit drinking, he’s doing some pretty unsavory jobs as a private investigator.

He gets pulled into the world of a drug dealer after his wife has been kidnapped, and a lot of bad, bad things start happening. Neeson is very good in the film, but the script, written

by Frank and based on the novel by Lawrence Block, has too many cardboard characters.

Worst of all is a homeless kid sidekick (played

by Astro). There’s also the strung-out heroin addict, the whispery-voiced abductor of women, and the creepy guy who tends the cemetery and keeps pigeons on the roof … and he knows something. I liked Neeson here, and I wouldn’t mind seeing the character again.

Hopefully, the next film with this character—if there is one—trims the fat.

Dolphin Tale 2

Call this one The Empire Strikes Back of Dolphin Tale movies, in that it is slightly better than the original (not much— just slightly) and it has Tauntauns (actually, that’s not true). The likes of Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr. rejoin annoying child actors Nathan Gamble and Cozi Zuehlsdorff (yes, the Cozi Zuehlsdorff) for another round of gooey sentimentality involving dolphins. This time out, and probably due to all of those current issues involving whales and dolphins in captivity, the story spends a lot of time on rehabbing and releasing animals rather than confining them for human amusement. In addition to Winter, the dolphin with the prosthetic tail, there’s a pretty awesome sea turtle and a kooky pelican that kids will love. The movie kind of works as educational fare, but when it drifts away from the aquarium tanks it’s a real hell ride.

It must be said that Harry Connick Jr. can’t act for beans, Ashley Judd’s career has really hit the skids, and Morgan Freeman just has no business being within a million miles of this film. Gamble and Zuehlsdorff (yes, the Cozi Zuehlsdorff) are, I’m sure, a couple of exquisite human beings, but watching them in a movie is an annoying, tedious task. I love the dolphins and aquatic life in this film. It’s the humans who drive me crazy.

The Drop

This film features the final performance by James Gandolfini, and it’s a beauty. Luckily for the viewer, it’s not even the best thing about the movie. That would be the central performance delivered by Tom Hardy as Bob, a seemingly meek bartender of questionable intelligence who works for Cousin Marv (Gandolfini). Hardy disappears into this role, and will have you in awe that this is actually the guy who played Bane in The Dark Night Rises. The bar that Cousin Marv and Bob occupy is a drop bar, where many of the gambling winnings in a seedier part of Brooklyn wind up in a safe. One night, the bar is held up, and Cousin Marv has to hand over five grand. This puts Marv in debt to scary Chechen mobsters, now proprietors of the bar Marv once owned. Bob and Marv must devise a plan to pay the mobsters back, and when they do, they find themselves in an even deeper dilemma. Gandolfini’s Marv owes plenty to his Tony Soprano. He comes off like Tony after his power has been taken away, and his wife has abandoned him. The screenplay even gives him a nagging sister and a father in a rest home.

Hardy delivers a character that’s always sympathetic, even when he reveals himself to be a bit more complicated than he first seems.

It’s just another great performance in what is starting to become a rather impressive list of achievements.

The Equalizer

Based on a TV show from the ’80s that I never once watched, Denzel Washington plays Robert McCall, a quiet employee at a Home Depot-type store. Robert likes to go drink tea at a local diner and read his book, and it appears that there is very little to him.

When a young prostitute (Chloe Grace Moretz) gets into trouble with Russian mobsters, Robert springs into action, and major details of his past are slowly revealed. Washington is pretty

damn great in the role, playing a sweet, gentle man who can tear your face off in an instant without blinking an eye. The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), and while Fuqua resorts to a lot of visual clichés (slow motion, rain) he totally owns those clichés. Marton Csokas is good and scary as Teddy, the film’s main bad guy. His confrontations with Robert are quite memorable. The movie doesn’t offer much when it comes to new things, but it does provide solid entertainment through and through. I’m hoping Washington gets a franchise out of this one, because I’d like to see more about the story of Robert McCall.

The Maze Runner

The maze in the title is a fun spectacle full of shifting walls and weird spider robots. When the movie is in the maze it is good. When it’s out of the maze, it kind of stinks. Dylan O’Brien plays Thomas, a teenager transported to a camp surrounded by a large, constantly shifting maze. The camp is inhabited by other teens, including Alby (Aml Ameen), Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) and Gally (Will Poulter). They are all clueless about why they have been put there and how to escape, but they do send a squad of “runners” into the maze to map it out and search its outer reaches. The searches are fruitless until the mysterious Thomas takes charge. The mystery of the maze is intriguing, but the payoff is blah. The Lord of the Flies drama between the leads is typical, boring stuff. I liked the design of the maze, and the maze turns out to be the film’s most interesting character. Second place goes to Poulter, who is a long way from the comic territory he staked out in We’re the Millers. Too bad the rest of the movie feels like a patchwork of many movies before.

The One I Love

A husband and wife (Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss) struggling in their relationship visit a retreat on the advice of their therapist (Ted Danson), and they make a startling discovery in one of the guest houses. That discovery results in something that is beautifully clever in addressing the problems that plague many relationships, while also playing like a really cool Twilight Zone episode. The big twist results in one of the better romantic comedies in years. Calling this a romantic comedy is almost an insult, but it has romance, and it is funny, so I suppose it falls into that genre. I do think it’s a movie that many therapists will hate, because it could save some couples a bunch of money.

Duplass is making a name for himself as an understated, offbeat romantic comedy lead.

He’s actually the star of another of the more recent great romantic comedies, Safety Not Guaranteed. Moss, star of TV’s Mad Men, has a movie career spanning over two decades, but The One I Love makes it feel like she’s just arriving. The Skeleton Twins

Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader take their respective careers to the next level in this film, with both spreading their dramatic wings and proving their talents go well beyond things that are just funny. Craig Johnson’s second directorial effort has some intermittent laughs, but it gets a lot darker than one might expect for the Target Lady and Stefon.

The movie should do a lot for both Hader and Wiig’s careers, and stands as one of the year’s best family dramas. The two play brotherand-sister twins, long estranged, who wind up back in each other’s lives. Milo (Hader) tries to commit suicide in L.A. after breaking up with his boyfriend. His twin sister, Maggie (Wiig), had been trying to do the very same thing back in New York when the call comes in that Milo is in the hospital. After an awkward reunion in a hospital room, Milo is heading to New York with his twin sis to lay low for a while. As Milo adjusts to life back on the east coast, Maggie conducts an affair with her scuba instructor.

Luke Wilson is sweet and funny as Maggie’s affable husband, and Ty Burrell is memorable as a man from Milo’s past. Wiig and Hader make for a very convincing onscreen brother and sister, something that’s surely the result of all those years they spent together on SNL.

Eight is enough The Lazy Eights After a nearly 10-year run and spending 13 years apart, local band the Lazy Eights are back for a one-night-only by Marina show on Oct. 11 at the Silver Peak Palmieri Restaurant and Brewery. They played the grand opening of the restaurant 15 years ago and agreed to come back and play in honor of Silver Peak’s 15-year anniversary.

The show will take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Silver Peak on the corner of Holcomb Avenue and Wonder Street.

The band’s sound started as straight bluegrass, but bluegrass doesn’t traditionally include drums, so the sound morphed into a bluegrass-rock hybrid.

“My favorite description I’ve ever got was a guy who said our band was like Paul Simon slamdancing with Buck Owens,” said Wilborn.

Although they didn’t fit the typical look and sound of the ’90s in their peak years, they were playing about 100-150 shows a year and produced three CDs in their time together.

The Lazy Eights played everything from weddings to festivals.

They played because they loved to play, but they didn’t try to push the band into being big and famous.

“A lot of times in the beginning, people would want to book us, and the clubs would say, well the Lazy Eights play this, and you look like you’re looking for this,” said Smith. Clubs wanted cover tunes or bands looking and sounding like the hottest stuff at the time. But people still wanted to book them at bars and weddings.

“If you’re trying to say we were chronically unhip, then yes, we were chronically unhip,” said Wilborn.

The Lazy Eights will play two sets of their original tracks from their peak years in the ’90s. The members are excited to play for the Silver Peak anniversary and to get together for one last show. The Derailment will open the show. In addition to hosting the Lazy Eights the event will have a beer garden, food specials and drink specials.

“Everyone who is going to be there already knows who we are,” said Wilborn. “It’s going to be more of a nostalgic fest than a criticpleasing show.” Ω

Chronically unhip?

Mike Tilton, Derek Smith, Ben Wilborn and Joey McKinney are the Lazy Eights.

The band includes Ben Wilborn on vocals, guitar, violin and mandolin, Joey McKinney on bass, Mike Tilton on guitars, and Derek Smith on drums. The band decided to call it quits in 2001 because they were tired and wanted to start families and careers. There was no animosity among them when they decided to split.

“It was like a good divorce,” said Smith.

They have remained friends and are excited for this 90-minute show comprised of two sets of all original songs.

Music has stayed in the band members’ lives in the 13 years the band has been silent. They expect to have most of the music come back to them while they rehearse, but they know that they have some practice to do before showtime.

They’ll be getting together a week early, so they’ll have some time to work in the studio.

“It has been 13 years since we have played any of this music, and a lot of it is pretty arranged, pretty complicated,” said Wilborn.

Pre-Opening Tour of Challenger Center The Challenger Learning Center of Northern Nevada, along with educational partners Washoe County School District, will hold a pre-opening tour of Nevada’s first Challenger Center. The center will open its doors at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, for a tour of the facility and its Space Station and Mission Control simulators Advanced Spaceflight Laboratory Shuttle. The event includes a screening of a large-format film featuring the first American woman to walk in space, Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, who will also be the keynote speaker at a dinner at the Grand Sierra Resort on Saturday, Oct. 11.

Challenger Centers were started by the families of the astronauts who lost their lives aboard the space shuttle Challenger, which broke apart midair on Jan. 28, 1986. Using space exploration as a theme, Challenger Centers aim to foster interest in mathematics, science and technology and motivate students to pursue careers in these fields.

Redrun II: A Zombie Sequel Eldorado Great Italian Festival

Fasten your bible belt My boyfriend and I are spending Christmas with his family.

I like them and get along well with them. However, they’re very religious, and he wants me to join them in going to holiday church services. I grew up secular in a conservative town, and I developed a deep distaste for religion. His family knows I’m an atheist but doesn’t know the extent of my aversion to religion. I explained to my boyfriend that the idea of sitting through church and going through the motions is downright upsetting to me. Though he’s no longer religious, he doesn’t share my aversion, and he insists I go out of respect for him and his family. Should I just grin and bear it as a favor to him?

Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time religion has caused tension in the world. And sure, there’s something to be said for doing things to please your partner. However, going to somebody’s religious service as an atheist who’s seriously upset by religion isn’t quite the same as “grinning and bearing it” at the opera. You probably aren’t opposed to Verdi on principle, and it’s unlikely to call up childhood memories like “My mommy says your mommy is in bed with the devil.”

The problem started when your boyfriend decided to use the “respect!” argument to guilt you into giving in. This is low-blow, crush-the-competition arguing. Of course, when two people partner up, there will always be disagreements. But in a relationship, winning really isn’t everything.

When you find yourselves at odds, instead of hammering each other with what you want, explain why you want it. Focusing on each other’s feelings—really focusing, not 28 | RN&R |

just pretending to listen until you can get back to selling your points—should lead you to be moved by each other’s fears or distress. This, in turn, should inspire a more compassionate and constructive response. For example, if instead of telling you “You have to go with us to church!” your boyfriend says something like, “I just want my family to like you,” his push to get you into a pew sounds more like something he’s trying to do for you than to you. This allows you to respond lovingly to him, reassuring him that his family already likes you (despite not quite understanding your blase attitude toward burning in hell).

For this mode of conflict management to work, you have to accept that some differences just can’t be bridged.

Still, discussing them in a way that makes you both feel respected and understood should at least leave you feeling good about each other and the relationship. In this situation, the reality is, you being a nonbeliever could ultimately be a big problem for his parents. But you show your respect by acting respectful to them—maybe welcoming them back from Mass with a punchbowl of your famous eggnog—not by disrespecting your own beliefs and going to church “just this once,” which sets a bad precedent. Ω

Now is an excellent time to purge the savage mementos from your heart, and clean the whole place up as best as you can. You don’t have to get all OCD about it. There’s no need to scour and scrub until everything’s spotless. Even a halfhearted effort will set in motion promising transformations in your love life.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): I hope you will learn more in the next eight months than you have ever before learned in a comparable period. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Three times

a week, I take a hike along a rough path through an oak forest. I say it’s rough because it’s strewn with loose rocks. If I don’t survey the ground as I move, I’m constantly turning my ankles. Or at least that was the case until last week. For two days, with the help of a rake, I cleared many of those bothersome obstacles off the trail. It took several hours, but now the way is smoother.

According to the Internet Movie Database, 240 films have referenced themes from his work. British writer Aldous Huxley wasn’t a fan of Poe, though. He said Poe was “too poetical—the equivalent of wearing a diamond ring on every finger.” Judging from the astrological omens, I suspect you may be at risk to lapse into a diamond-ring-onevery-finger phase yourself, Leo. Jody Hice is running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Georgia’s 10th Congressional District. To bolster his authority, he repeats quotes by revered figures from American history. One of his favorites has been a gem from the sixth U.S. President, John Quincy Adams: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” The only problem is, those words were actually written by country singer Dolly Parton, not

by Adams. Don’t get fooled by a comparable case of mistaken identity, Virgo. Be on the alert for unwarranted substitutions and problematic switcheroos. Be a staunch factchecker. Insist on verification.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “I am naughtiest of all,” wrote poet Emily Dickinson in a playful letter to Maggie Maher, dated October 1882. In accordance with the astrological omens, I authorize you to let that same declaration fly frequently from your own lips in the coming week. Feel free to invoke other variations on the theme of naughtiness, as well: “I am exploring the frontiers of naughtiness,” for example, or “You need to be naughtier” (said to a person you’d like to get naughty with), or “Being naughty is my current spiritual practice.”

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “There’s a

way not to be broken that takes brokenness to find it,” writes Naomi Shihab Nye in her poem “Cinco de Mayo.” I suspect this describes your situation right now. The bad news is that you are feeling a bit broken.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): In

a competitive game show on Japanese TV, 13 people had slabs of meat tied to their foreheads. They then poked their heads up from below, through holes in the floor of an elevated platform, where a hungry lizard was stalking around. But not one of the contestants stuck around when the lizard came to nibble the meat; they all ducked down out of their holes and fled to safety. That was probably wise, although it meant that the prize went unclaimed. Now I’m wondering, Sagittarius, about what might happen if a similar event were staged in your neighborhood. I suspect there’s a chance you would will yourself to stand calmly as the lizard feasted on the meat just inches from your eyes. As much as I admire that kind of poised courage, I want you to know that there are better ways to express it. Be on the lookout for noble challenges with goals that are truly worthy of you.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19):

Director Michael Bay makes big, loud, fast, melodramatic action films, including Armageddon, Pearl Harbor and the four Transformers movies. The critics hate him, but he’s unfazed. “I make movies for teenage boys,” he says. “Oh, dear, what a crime,” he adds sarcastically. I love that stance.

He knows what he’s good at, and makes no apologies for doing it. I recommend that you cop some of that attitude right now.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): While

walking in San Francisco, I passed the Pacific Heights Health Club. The sign out front said, “Birthday suits tailored here.” It was a witty reference to the idea that working out at a gym helps people get their naked bodies in good shape. I’d like to interpret the sign’s message in a different way and apply it to you. The time is right for you to get back in touch with your raw, original self, and give it the care and the fuel and the treats it has been missing. Who did you start out to be?

Did you go to school for production?

No, I’m completely self-taught. I started drawing at like 6, and then I became a musician and played the drums. I’ve always had that creative bone in me. Towards the end of high school, the Art Institute came and did a 3-D animation demo. I was like, man, if I can take my creative ability and learn the computer, I could probably make a living off this. My parents couldn’t afford to send me to school so I got a hand-me-down computer and a hacked version of Photoshop and started teaching myself graphic design and web design. Then for my band, I started making little music videos and just fell in love with video production.

What sparked your career?

I moved to Reno in 2007 and got a job with Charter Media. That was pretty much my education and work experience all in one.

They saw the creative ability in me and knew they couldn’t teach that, but could teach me how to shoot and edit. I did about 300 commercials while I was there. It was definitely a good base because doing 30-second spots teaches you how to cut the fat and get to the message. I got to write, shoot and edit, so it made me a well-rounded producer.

I’ve been on my own for two years now as a freelancer.

Does your music background help you with music videos?

Absolutely, 100 percent. It made me a good editor, too. You can be a great shooter and shoot awesome stuff but if the audio sucks, it sucks. I think having the ability to pick music that fits the subject helps. Being a drummer and knowing the beat and timing has also helped me. I’m really happy that I have a musical background.

You specialize in commercials, music videos and documentaries.

What’s your favorite?

Probably documentary-style storytelling. I mean, I love it all. Commercial advertising is fun, especially when there is a crazy concept.

But I have a filmmaker in me, so documentary style stuff and telling an interesting story is definitely my favorite.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Still in Reno?

In five years, I’d really like to see myself doing more independent films, personal films, more documentary-style work. Producing more content and trying to get it out to some of those distribution platforms like Netflix or iTunes. Even just continuing to grow as a filmmaker. I’ve got to be honest—Reno has been awesome to me. It has allowed me to be a little bit of a bigger fish in a smaller pool.

I don’t know if I could pull off this freelancer thing if I was in San Francisco or a bigger city. I think Reno is cool as a home base. We have an international airport, and if I could live here and still fly and produce around the world, then I’m happy. Ω

Who have you done music videos for?

I’ve done two videos for Bassnectar. A couple years ago, I directed a six-camera shoot for the song “Infinite.” We only had 15 minutes to shoot. I directed five-camera guys.

We ran six cameras, and I put a GoPro right in front, on his deck so the shot was right at him. I’ve also done videos for Whitney Myer, Greg Golden and other locals.

What are you most proud of?

I did this personal piece where I got to travel

Tower of power Back in March, I wrote about the gigantic solar power project being built just outside of Tonopah, the Crescent Dunes Project, which will use 17,000 sun-sucking mirrors to heat salt, circulate it through a 540-foot “power tower,” generate steam, and then make electricity. This unit, when finished, will make about 12 percent as much annual electricity as Hoover Dam, enough to power 75,000 homes.

It’s a spectacular project, notable because the molten salt aspect will allow it to supply electric power even at night, a first for solar installations.

The project was supposed to come on line this summer, but now it’s autumn, and I didn’t hear a peep about some fat cat or dignitary throwing the ceremonial switch out there. As it turns out, things are a bit slow, but not too bad. Now, latest estimates have Crescent Dunes becoming operational sometime before the end of the year. Nevada should milk this development for all the glowing green pub it can. Between this thing and the

I made a little short called Land of Beauty: A Journey Through The Republic of Georgia with some of the footage I was able to keep.

It’s very personal ’cause I’m on camera, and I’m used to being behind it. People have told me it’s my best work. It is my most played video online. It got a bunch of views in Russia and Georgia. People commented and said, “You did a great job showing our country, thank you. You make it look beautiful.”

OK, so shouldn’t it be quite easy to not come into contact with an infected persons’ blood, urine, feces, saliva, mucus or semen? Especially if you’re wearing that anti-viral suit. But, as it turns out, there are other bodily fluids to consider. Namely, breast milk, tears and sweat, the latter being not exactly a rare commodity in Africa.

The CDC itself said, “but if infected sweat, mucus or saliva gets on doorknobs or countertops, the Ebola virus can be spread for several hours by someone touching those surfaces and then touching their eyes, nose, mouth, or open cut” (italics mine). Which would explain a lot about why this virus is being somewhat stubborn.

And how trained professionals are getting sick. And how it may not be all that tough, in the end, for people to spread it. Ω

Tesla story, we are rackin’ up some much needed 21st century progressive-type mojo. And not a moment too soon. * Up until now, I was willing to accept the government line about Ebola being difficult to transmit. But lately, questions of contagiousness are popping up and not going away. For one thing, if the virus is so hard to catch, why can’t they corral it once and for all in Africa? If our doctors over there were so conscious of being in a “hot” zone, how the hell did they get it? How do you spend all day in a hazmat suit and still get Ebola? Why don’t reporters ask hard questions of people as to how exactly they got this bug? Honestly, this line of “difficult transmission” is starting to remind me of those old sci-fi flicks where the government will say just about anything to prevent everybody from flipping out.
