Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I’m writing the editor’s note this week because Brian is on vacation—partly because, as I’m sure he’s told you if you’ve seen him recently, or you follow him on social media, or if you regularly read this very column, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart recently flew him out to New York for an interview.

We just had a big weekend: Friday night, Sept. 19, was our annual party with the winners of our Best of Northern Nevada contest over at the club Edge in the Peppermill. It ended up getting a little wild—not too wild, but just wild enough.

Then, Saturday night was the awards ceremony for the Nevada Press Association awards. We won a bunch of stuff among the urban weeklies.

Re “Shakedown” (cover story, Sept. 11): I appreciate the willingness to look at the opposite side, but it would have been nice if that was done in a more balanced manner. The piece followed the Fox News structure of have an opinion and using arguments to support it vs. journalistic standards of reporting all details. This story and the comments (after the first one) make it sound as if the taxpayers are writing Tesla a check out of our treasury. We are not. We are agreeing to a specific set of tax deductions. So it’s money which might have gone into the treasury, but won’t. The contractors, employees and vendors Tesla pays will add their taxes to the treasury.

The reason so many states were so hungry for this plant is that it is an export industry and thus an economic foundation. The plant is funded with national and international investment money and will be selling what it produces to a worldwide customer base. Over the next 20 years, dozens of companies who are part of the Tesla supply/sales line will move here, and hundreds of companies that are involved in similar technologies will move closer simply for the logistics and conveniences. That’s not to mention the value of the workforce being trained in industry which will result in a local mindbloom from ex-Tesla employees starting their own company with X, Y, Z invention. The 22,000-plus number of final jobs from the economic impact of this plant is not a guess ... as long as Tesla gave real numbers it is science.

We have clear studies about how economic impacts work.

Five states didn’t go into a bidding war because they were stupid. They went into a bidding war because history is filled with examples of what happens to a local economy when a large export industry manufacturer arrives. mistakes, take shortcuts, and engage in questionable backroom deals?

We are talking politics—of course such things were done, and good job reporting some of them. Just please don’t spit on the good stuff as part of revealing the challenges.

Damn those statists Re “Betting on the come line” (Left foot forward, Sept. 11): It’s an interesting environment to live in when an entrepreneur who has built successful ventures like PayPal and SpaceX gets a pile of vitriol from the left when he successfully makes a deal to expand his “green” business.

This is the difficulty with statist philosophy.

Elon Musk already operates under California environmental law which has probably slowed the ability for his company to innovate at the speed it is truly capable of because of an over abundance of tax-revenuedriven environmental legislation that even environmentalists claim is not as effective as it should be—the California Environmental Quality Act, for one.

The fact that Nevada has provided a new opportunity for Tesla to create new and innovative battery technology inside its borders should be something celebrated by all sides of our political spectrum, as we have had the country’s most dismal economy since the ’08 collapse. It’s not surprising that business owners who will gain the fringe benefits of a massive project to improve infrastructure are the ones being given harsh treatment by this column. $50 million dollars in public to private stimulus sounds like Democratic economic strategy 101. that the governor’s office can waive any requirement for transparency, judicial review, or even the 50 percent quota of Nevada hires. Tesla will be a tax credit capture zone, and can even get tax credits for any of its suppliers, such as Manpower.

That’s money that won’t go to our already starved schools. (So vote yes on Question 3 in November and make corporations pay!) This deal demeans Nevada. But as long as we have reporters like Dennis Myers telling the truth, we have a chance to fight back and build a state that attracts great jobs like Tesla without prostituting ourselves.

legislators had a problem with brothel owners in Nevada they could have easily pulled a Raggio and burned them all to the ground (allegedly).

This so-called “gamble” is being undertaken by a company that pulled in nearly a quarter billion dollars in its IPO. I predict that we will gain tremendously from this venture, but only if we can avoid so much nay-saying about the murky future of the company. Avoiding risk is not a guarantee of safety. Increased sales tax revenue from 6,500 wage earners, not including the wages of workers employed to build new infrastructure, will be a shot in the arm to our community, including our schools.

I would theorize that a lack of challenging opportunities in Nevada has led to the minimal amount of emphasis placed on education. It’s hard to head in any direction when there’s no where to go. The mere presence of the company and its jobs will inspire parents and students to consider STEM education. If students have to move out of state to receive their education, at least they have a reason to come back. How about we all embrace this opportunity and responsibly move forward with a project driven by innovation and sustainability?

Damn those typos Re “150 things for 150 years” (cover story, Sept. 18): Thanks for tossing together the “150 Things for 150 Years” trivia feast on Nevada! I circled lots of entries to check out referenced books, movies and songs I hadn’t known about.

No list is complete without eliciting peevish quibbles: • No. 2, on The Misfits: Marilyn Monroe’s character doesn’t toss her wedding ring into the Truckee.

• No. 32, on The Shootist: It was released in 1976 (your typo said “1986”).

• No. 144: You call The Killers a “mediocre” band. The Killers have sold an estimated 25 million albums worldwide, and have six or seven times that many video views.

“Somebody Told Me” has more than 45 million views — and the visceral Richard Cheese cover has nearly 90,000. Whatever The Killers are — bombastic, overly earnest, offensive to hipsters — “mediocre” is the wrong word.

Back to nature The U.S. Forest Service has made the right decision in leaving the former site of Incline Lake empty and moving ahead to restore it to its natural state.

Because the Nevada Department of Wildlife does a good job for our environment and also supported re-establishing Incline Lake, there were those who felt that bringing back the human-made lake was an environmentally sound decision. We don’t agree.

The lake was created by a 1942 dam. The 754 acre property that included the lake was a remnant of the years when Lake Tahoe was a playground for tax residents and wealthy celebrities. The 20-acre lake was accompanied by several buildings, including a clubhouse and a lodge plus an indoor swimming pool and deep space telescope. The telescope, housed in the last standing structure, was removed to the University of Nevada in Reno in July 2008. It was in that same year that the Forest Service acquired the property for $43,500,000. The lake is now dry.

The dam is adjudged to be seismically unstable and a federal study said it would “liquify” in an earthquake.

But that was only one problem. That same study said the watershed has been harmed by the lake: “Water was diverted out of Third Creek to supply the man-made lake, but this diversion was shut down prior to the Forest Service acquiring ownership. The addition of Third Creek water and ditching led to stream erosion. The creek has cut down through surface soils and continues to do so currently. This erosion front is located just beyond the rim of the old lake bed, where water plunges 6 feet over the head cut from

Too often human-made lakes have been kept in place because they are there. A notable example is in California, where enormous effort has been put into “saving” the accidentally-created Salton Sea. That body of water has come and gone for eons, but its existence in the memory of everyone living was caused by humans— a sloppily constructed irrigation project resulted in headgates giving way in 1905 and the Colorado River pouring for months out of its channel. As Marc Reisner wrote in his Cadillac Desert, “the Salton Sink had once again become the Salton Sea.” Nature, of course, slowly returned it to its relatively dry state and humans are now foolishly trying to interfere with that natural process by restoring the results of that accidental disaster.

The Incline dam was a product of an era when the population of this region was small and tampering with nature could be done with little widespread impact.

Today we have to plan better and use everything we have more carefully, water most of all. We understand the desire of anglers to fish Incline Lake and of the Department of Wildlife to have a fishery for cutthroat trout, but there are also competing interests, such as hikers and birders and wetlands.

We prefer to let nature re-take its course and for the Forest Service to return the site as close to its natural scenic state as possible. Ω

Lethargy is the leading candidate Nevada’s 2014 elections are shaping up to be the most apathetic in memory.

Few activists work the phones or the doors, there are barely any TV commercials, and the feature contest in the ho-hum cycle is a governor’s race that is embarrassingly one-sided.

In Northern Nevada, there are no by competitive state Senate races and Sheila Leslie only one slightly contested Assembly match-up.

There’s also a general feeling that it doesn’t much matter who controls the Legislature anyway, since nothing ever gets done to solve Nevada’s most pressing problem, an unreliable and outdated revenue structure. Arguing over the crumbs is discouraging and depressing.

Many Republican candidates, including the governor, have wised up and are no longer spouting the Tea Party anti-everything philosophy.

Instead, they’re going out of their way to cultivate women, gays and young people, although not very successfully—yet.

Democrats, on the other hand, should be worried that disillusioned

and unsatisfied voters are not motivated to actively support a legislative candidate slate that seems to have lost its vision, succumbing to a so-called bipartisan go-along and get-along approach that mostly gets things done the governor’s way.

Senate Democrats produced nothing but talk on taxes last session, except for a rightly ridiculed feeble attempt to “study” the revenue structure for the umpteenth time, a bill that was quickly submitted and withdrawn in the waning days of the session. But when the Democratic senators refused to take a vote on the sex education bill promoted by progressives, while finding plenty of time to push a so-called “freedom of religion” bill taking away individual rights, they alienated progressives to the point that some are wondering if losing the Senate to the Republicans this year would be such a disaster.

At least chameleon Republican floor leader Michael Roberson of Clark County ensured the passage of Senate Joint Resolution 15 to finally eliminate the sweetheart

tax protections enjoyed by the mining industry—Question 2 on November’s ballot. You never know which of Roberson’s multiple political personalities will show up at a legislative session, but there’s no doubt he will lead.

And then we had the Tesla special session where Senate Democrats’ biggest battle was not over school funding or prevailing wage but outrage over the governor’s decision to move $70 million in Hollywood subsidies to Tesla, decimating the Democrats’ signature corporate giveaway program.

Never mind the film subsidy hasn’t produced many jobs, and multiple studies show it costs more than it earns, the Democrats put up a noisy fight for it—and quickly lost. They did wring a promise from the governor to “talk” about those subsidies early in the 2015 session.

One thing no one wanted to talk about during the giga-giveaway session—we’re already at least $120 million short going into the new biennium.

But progressives won’t be voting Republican and the Democratic leadership knows it. The real danger is that the disillusioned base and the growing number of independent voters decide to sit this one out, allowing conservative voters to sway the outcome in races for lieutenant governor, secretary of state, and attorney general, where the choices couldn’t be clearer.

Nevada’s destiny really depends upon the most important item on the ballot this year—Question 3, the Education Initiative. Most elected Democrats have panned it, missing the opportunity to motivate their base with a ready-made economic populist issue to make corporations finally pay their share to fund our schools.

The margins tax isn’t perfect, but legislators can adjust it in three years.

If it fails, we’ll have to depend on the 2015 Legislature to come up with a better solution. There’ll be a lot more talk, but reaching a 2/3 consensus on anything of significance is unlikely, given our history.

Early voting begins Oct. 18.

Nevada’s future is up to you. Ω

It’s time to step back On the eve of the thirteenth anniversary of September 11, President Obama addressed the nation and committed the United States to war in Iraq again.

In the tradition of Clinton and Bush, Obama is wagging the dog as the U.S. economy sputters. There is no defined goal except for vague promby Brenden ises to “degrade and destroy ISIS.” Trainor There is no limit, except to assert that there will be no “U.S. boots on the ground.” But limiting our involvement to air strikes won’t be enough, and Obama’s plan to cobble together a new “Coalition of the [un] Willing” is already falling apart.

There is no talk of a UN mandate as that would involve Russia. Nobel Peace Prize winner Obama is getting his wish to bomb Syria through the back door. The Terrorism Industrial Congressional Complex keeps raking in our tax dollars.

Thirteen years of a fruitless War on Terror has only resulted in more and deadlier terrorism. ISIS is the most evil example of terrorism we

have seen so far, committing numerous atrocities against Christians and other religious and tribal minorities.

Crucifixions, beheadings, mass executions, rape, kidnapping and extortion are terrible no matter who perpetrates them. That includes our ally, Saudi Arabia, which regularly beheads and mutilates Sharia lawbreakers. The beheading of two Americans, who bravely assumed the risk of war journalism, is despicably evil. But the idea that ISIS will be beheading the mayor of Phoenix next is absurd. Don’t the ranks of ISIS grow in direct proportion to U.S. attacks?

Libertarians in Congress are against the escalation, and demand a Congressional vote before Obama acts. But the Emperor of the Fairways and Sand Traps believes he doesn’t need Congress. Congress will likely slink away, afraid of a vote before the election. Once again the Republic dies while Democracy reveals its Janus face.

A true Constitutional Conservative understands that force is to be used only in the most extreme circumstances. Those who claim otherwise ignore our founders’ warning not to “go abroad in search of monsters to destroy”.

Long involvements in war lead to factionalism and repression at home.

Neoconservative war hawks and neoliberal “humanitarian” interventionists pump up the dangers we face in the world while downplaying the financial and personal costs that will be borne by the young people in the military and all U.S. citizens.

No, Senator Cruz, the world is not aflame with war. Most of the world is at peace, and real progress is being made through economic development rather than state ideologies. It seems the only places where there is conflict are those where the U.S. is militarily involved. Libya, as Rand Paul said, is a “jihadist wonderland.” Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia have all been

invaded and droned with no tangible results except dead innocents and more terrorists.

The sad truth is that America has not “won” a war since World War II, and even that was a pyrrhic victory, as we lost China, Eastern Europe and later North Korea to Communism.

We did not win in Korea, we did not win in Vietnam, and we did not win anything worth winning in any major military adventure since.

Despite our gargantuan war budget we are ill-equipped to fight foreign wars against insurgents and tribal terrorists. The irony is we were the insurgents in 1776 when we used irregular guerrilla tactics against the British. Now, sadly, we are the British. It is time to stop being the world’s policeman and allow people around the world to work out their problems without Big Brother’s “help.” It is time to let go and put America first. Ω

Assembly Democrats met in this closed room off the actual legislative hall during the special session of the Nevada Legislature. Because it was technically a political party meeting instead of a legislative meeting, the public could be excluded, even though there was legislative business being done there. The sign on the door reads, “STOP/ CAUCUS IN SESSION.”

Kill switch smart or not?

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto’s office is drafting legislation to require “kill switches” on cell phones sold in the state.

The switch allows the owner to remotely disable the phone if it is stolen, creating a disincentive for thieves, but it also allows others— such as the police—to do the same.

The Cortez Masto draft may be unnecessary by the time it is submitted to the Nevada Legislature. Given the huge size of the California market—the state makes up just over 12 percent of the population of the United States—it’s possible that phone manufacturers will build the kill switches into all models rather than provide switch-free versions to states that have no such requirement.

The attorney general is allowed to request up to 20 drafts of legislation from the legislative bill drafters. But Cortez Masto is termed out and will be out of office by the time the legislature goes into session next year, so it will be the decision of her successor whether to continue with the kill switch measure. Candidates for the job are Republican Adam Laxalt and Democrat Ross Miller.

Mobile carriers say the switches will make smart phones more susceptible to hackers and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, in a letter to California legislator Susan Bonilla, opposed the legislation, saying the technology was already available on an optional basis and the legislation “is not explicit about who can activate such a switch. … [M]andating a solution through legislation is not the right approach.”

But Consumers Union supported the legislation, less for theft prevention than because the smart phones contain so much private information. The organization conceded that kill technology is already available but said its inclusion in devices should be mandatory by law. “Every smart phone should be required to have a ‘kill switch’ that lets you wipe personal information off your device,” it said in a prepared statement. “What’s more, you should be able to disable your phone remotely to make it inoperable to thieves. And if you’re fortunate enough to get your phone back, it should be easy to reactivate.”

On Aug. 11, 2011, during protests on Bay Area Rapid Transit stations against a police killing of a homeless man, BART disabled cell service to four stations to hamper coordination of the protests. That angered some residents who joined the subsequent day’s protest. It also sparked a Federal Communications Commission investigation of BART and prompted the California Legislature to pass a law limiting official interference with cell transmissions.

It’s not just community groups whose work could be disrupted.

The Columbia Journalism Review described the problem for photographers and reporters: “You’re a journalist covering a street protest, and the local police chief doesn’t like the photos you’re tweeting from your iPhone. One shows an officer arresting a minister. Another shows a protester surrendering as an officer chokes him. Yet another shows a teargas canister landing near a group of young people. The batons and rubber bullets come out, and the chief remotely disables the journalist’s iPhone, rendering it useless.”

The blockage may not stop reporting of a news event, but it slows things down until law enforcement gets all its ducks and spin doctors in a row and may well get its account of an event out before onthe-scene observers. In California, that would likely be illegal under the post-BART protest law, but what are the chances that local prosecutors will charge the police with a crime? The Nevada fund for film incentives was slashed from $80 million to $10 million, with the abatements then diverted to the planned Tesla car battery plant in Storey County.

Closed to the public Nevada Legislature ignores voter-enacted open meeting law If the Nevada Legislature fell under the state’s open meeting law, the attorney general might now be investigatby ing both the governor and the Dennis Myers legislature.

The open meeting law requires three days notice of a public meeting and also requires that it be posted to a public body’s website. The Nevada Legislature did not provide that notice of the special session last month. This was because the governor didn’t call the session until a few hours before it was supposed to start, and only he can write the agenda for the special session. So that

The state’s open meeting law does not cover the Nevada Legislature, but there is open meeting language in the Nevada Constitution that does—but the lawmakers ignore it. It was contained in a constitutional amendment approved by voters 20 years ago this coming November.

The amendment originated with Assemblymember Steve Coulter, who had been working for legislative open meeting since 1975. He and other legislators initially wanted to simply bring the legislature under the regular open meeting law, but a legislative lawyer said that because of existing constitutional language allowing the Senate to close its sessions, only a constitutional amendment would do the job.

In his last legislature in 1981, Coulter’s latest measure was changed from an amendment to open legislative meetings to a measure that would do exactly the opposite.

It was rejected by voters. There the issue lay for another eight years.

But then, in 1989, the part-time legislators voted themselves an increase in their legislative pensions, a step that rubbed raw the nerves of rank-and-file voters. The public reaction was fierce, the lawmakers begged the governor for a special session where they repealed the hike, but the issue still took a toll, prompting a number of election defeats.

Legislative leaders at the next legislature, in 1991, seized on reviving the constitutional amendment requiring open legislative meetings as a way to repair their tattered reputation. It was approved and then given secondround approval by the 1993 legislative session. Voters approved it as Question 2 in the 1994 election, 78 to 22 percent. No recount was required.

The legislators who had embraced open meetings so desperately then took a wholly cynical step. They ignored the new law.

To this day, no rules such as time requirements for posting agendas have been adopted. The only mentions of meetings in the legislature’s joint rules deal with the date of first joint meetings on budgets of state agencies, committee meeting records, and conference committee meetings. And much legislative business has been moved out of legislative bodies and into groups that do not fall under the law.

The language now in the constitution reads, at article 4, section 15, “The doors of each House shall be kept open during its session, and neither shall, without the consent of the other, adjourn for more than three days nor to any other place than that in which they may be holding their sessions. The meetings of all legislative committees must be open to the public, except meetings held to consider the character, alleged misconduct, professional competence, or physical or mental health of a person.”

In the years after its enactment, legislative leaders moved to two new techniques for doing business behind closed doors—party caucuses and leadership meetings.

The caucuses were not solely a product of the new law. They were also fueled by the increasing polarization of politics in the United States. As the public became less partisan, politics became more so.

Legislative bodies—national, state, and even local in some jurisdictions—were riven by partisan splits and the camaraderie and congeniality that once characterized legislative politics left the scene.

In the Nevada Legislature, as lawmakers of opposing parties stopped lunching together, they retreated into party caucuses to meet and plan strategy, enforce discipline, and try to scrape every possible bit of party advantage out of any development.

When Spike Wilson, who had stepped down from a Washoe County Senate seat in 1986 after a widely admired 16-year tenure, returned to visit in the late 1990s, he was astonished by the number of caucuses.

“I don’t think we ever had a party caucus when I was there,” he said.

The advantage to open meeting opponents—who seemed to include all legislators, since no

one objected—was that these were technically not legislative meetings, nor meetings of any public body.

They were meetings of the members of political parties. As such, they did not fall under the constitutional amendment.

That doesn’t mean the legislators necessarily had to close them.

Years earlier when caucuses were rare, party caucuses were open. For instance, when in 1975 Gov. Mike O’Callaghan vetoed a bill repealing the motorcycle rider helmet law requirement (coincidentally also sponsored by Coulter), Assembly Democrats met in caucus in the Assembly lounge to plan how to uphold the governor’s veto. It was open to anyone who wanted to attend. Reporters were there taking notes.

But those days have passed as politics have become cutthroat.

Caucuses have become a way of excluding the public from legislative business.

Business in the Assembly and Senate halls is frequently interrupted as snags develop on votes and the two sides withdraw into their closed quarters to decide—out of public view—how to respond and then come out singing in unison. The public often never knows what hit it.

Leadership meetings, too, serve the same purpose of keeping the

public at bay. These gatherings might feature, for instance, all the committee chairs and floor leaders, who do not actually constitute a public body and thus are not covered by the law.

“It makes sure the full legislative bodies themselves are open,” he said, referring to the daily floor sessions. “It sends the message the committee meetings have to be open. But … the tendency to go into caucuses and come out knowing what they are going to do means there’s still a lot of the process going on behind closed doors.”

He has tried to interest legislators in writing a chapter of the open meeting law to cover the legislature in ways that deal with the special problems it has that other public bodies don’t, but so far, he said, “They seem happy with what they have.” Ω

Smoking gun Air pollution from the King Fire If you’ve left your home at all recently, chances are you’ve been greeted by the lessthan-welcome smoke from the King Fire throughout the valley. At midday on Sept. 23, the air quality index was at 156.

This level is considered unhealthy for everyone, not just sensitive groups.

“It impacts, at the levels that we’ve been seeing, everybody, but especially children, elderly, and those with heart and lung diseases,” said Brendan Schnieder, air quality specialist for Washoe County Health Department Air Quality Management Division (AQMD). “You’ll get anything from minor irritation in your throats, itchy eyes. You could get headaches. It can also be very severe where it can cause asthma attacks, affect people’s circulatory systems for their heart conditions. It can really inflame conditions that you could otherwise manage under clean air.”

And the only real way to stay healthy at this time is to avoid the smoke.

“There’s not much you can do, other than staying indoors, reducing activity, closing all windows, staying hydrated,” said Schnieder. “If you have to be outside, take frequent breaks. I’m doing the same thing. I have a threeyear-old and my wife. I pick him up from day care, and we just stay in the house all day. We play inside.”

The worst day for air pollution in the valley was Wednesday, Sept. 17.

“Normal for this time of the year, in sort of technical terms, is anywhere from four to six micrograms,” Schnieder said. “[Sept. 17] we saw as high as 270 micrograms, which is very, very high, very unusual. And on an hourly For more information, visit ourcleanair.com. basis, it’s very, very bad for you.” “[Sept. 17] was something to note because we had our worst air pollution levels,” said Daniel Inouye, chief of the Monitoring and Planning Branch of AQMD. “And [the King Fire] grew 50,000 acres that day, so it produced a lot of smoke and that smoke came to our area.”

The air quality in the area has been mostly unhealthy during the King Fire, but we are also getting some good levels throughout the day as well. “[The smoke] seems to kind of roll in whenever the wind shifts, which has been predominantly in the evening and late afternoon,” Schnieder said.

The Reno area isn’t new to smoke from wildfires in nearby areas causing issues for residents, and many will remember the Rim Fire last year causing similar problems. The King Fire, though, is slightly different.

“The Rim Fire was a little different in that it impacted us constantly,” Schnieder said. “There were no breaks like we’re seeing with this. We get really good air quality with this fire, and then in an hour, in an instant, it will shoot up to unhealthy conditions. … All together we had a higher one hour for this fire, and [Sept. 17] beat the worst day of the Rim Fire. The Rim Fire was kind of consistent at some level, with some peaks. This one is kind of good, high peaks; good, high peaks; good.”

Firefighters are making some headway on containment of the King Fire, and on Tuesday, Sept. 23, it was reported to be about 35 percent contained. Ω OPINION

HOW bizarre

BIZARRE GuItAR , a 40-year-old music shop on a stretch of Oddie Boulevard that many residents incorrectly assume is Sparks instead of Reno, presented a clinic in contest-winning in the RN&R’s 2014 Best of Northern Nevada readers’ poll.

It was an impressive showing, with the store racking up wins in a variety of categories, some of which might seem surprising for such a niche business. Bizarre Guitar was voted Best Local Place to Work, Best Place to Buy a Musical Instrument, Best Local Non-Casino Business, Best Place for Music Lessons, Best Business Facebook Page, Most Female Friendly Business, and Best Local Website. It was voted Best Place to Buy a Firearm and second place for Best Place to Shoot Firearms, wins that should more properly be attributed to Bizarre Guns, the store’s conjoined-twin sister business, next door, owned by the same folks and closely intertwined. Bizarre was voted second place for Most Female Friendly Company to Work For (first place—and take from this what you will—was a brothel). Bizarre Guitar owner Greg Golden was voted Best Local Musician. His band, the Greg Golden Band, won Best Local Band. Greg’s wife, Shanda Golden, the “queen bee” of Bizarre Guitar, won Most Innovative Woman.

A year earlier, in the 2013 version of the contest, the business won Best Place to Buy a Firearm, and came in second for Best Place to Buy a Musical Instrument. The business appeared nowhere else among the winners and runners up, and neither did the Goldens. Bizarre Guitar’s strong showing in so many categories in this year’s contest seemed surprising to some readers, with at least one reader joking on social media that the paper should change its name to the Sparks News & Review— making that common mistake about the store’s location—or even the Bizarre News & Review.

None of this is necessarily to say that those awards were not deserved. Bizarre Guitar is quintessential of a certain kind of wild Nevadan aesthetic—a libertarian place where you can buy your shotgun and your Stratocaster at the same spot, where questions aren’t asked, where bluesy pentatonic guitar riffs still reign supreme. It’s a place that seems unique to Northern Nevada, a guitar shop with rows and rows of instruments and a legendary “vault” in the basement with vintage instruments and

amps, and displays of 1950s Les Paul guitars as well as Civil War muskets. It’s hard to imagine it anywhere other than Northern Nevada. That alone puts it in the running in some of those categories.

But the various wins in the Best of Northern Nevada contest are just a symptom of Bizarre Guitar’s online dominance. On social media, the Bizarre-affiliated businesses rack up surprising numbers that tower over comparable local businesses’ social media presence. At press time, Bizarre Guitar had 154,493 likes on Facebook. For comparison’s sake, Nevada Humane Society, which came in second behind Bizarre in the votes for Best Business Facebook Page, had just 12,430. The Greg Golden Band had 78,968 likes. Second place band Jelly Bread had 3,830. Third place Moondog Matinee, just 2,072. The video for the Golden Band’s “Long Way Home,” a straightforward performance shoot of a hard rock tune, had more than 3.6 million views.

Guitar slinger “I’ve been playing guitar since I was seven,” said Greg Golden recently. “I’m 61 this year.

This is my 54th year of playing. It’s all I’ve ever done. I know every guitar shop, every guitar player, every kind of instrument, everything in the music industry. I’ve probably seen just about every major band there is.”

He has a lot of confidence and an air of deliberate machismo. He wears his black hair slicked back and rocks a Wild West mustache and goatee. He looks like a guy who prides himself on his knowledge of guns and blues guitar licks.

“I played on the road for years,” he said. “I played for Floyd Rose who invented the Floyd Rose tremolo. Several different bands. All kinds of different bands. And I toured, and just as I was making money on the road, making pretty good dough, I’d go to guitar shops and pawn shops, check ’em out, and I’d send those home as pay. Started paying money for guitars I knew would be valuable.”

Golden played for years in the Chuck Ruff Group, alongside the well-known drummer formerly of the Edgar Winter Group, and he’s proud of his many current musical associations with musicians like Paul Holdgate, formerly of Montrose, Bud Gaugh, formerly of Sublime, and Frank Hammond of Tesla. Holdgate and Gaugh will be among the guest musicians joining the Greg Golden Band for the group’s next performance, Friday, Sept. 26, at Chester’s Reno Harley-Davidson. It’s at the odd time of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., but is a tie-in to the Street Vibrations festival. The band is signed to a record label called Premier Records.

“Greg is unique in the fact that not only does he have a really bitching store, he can play like a motherfucking riot,” said Shanda.

“My man can play.”

Golden opened Bizarre Guitar in Aug, 1974, at a location in Sun Valley. The business moved into its current location in the borderland between Reno and Sparks in 1978.

the construction of the building specifically for their businesses.

Since then, Golden has sold many, many guitars and built up quite a collection of rare and vintage guitars, including a 1954 Fender Stratocaster that’s serial number six, but that Golden believes is likely the first one actually constructed. He says he’s sold guitars to many high-end collectors, including some legendary guitarists, like Carlos Santana and B.B. King, and their autographed albums adorn the walls of Bizarre’s downstairs vault.

Golden girl That vault is the primary setting of In the Vault with Shanda Golden, a YouTube web series in which Shanda conducts informal interviews with touring musicians.

“I interview rock stars,” she said. “I typically grab them from manufacturers, so I’ll interview endorsed artists. But I’ve become independent press somewhere along the line. ... It’s not just an infomercial anymore.”

She’s interviewed people like Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead, David Ellefson of Megadeth, and the guitarist Zakk Wylde.

In the interviews, she loves to play the role of the vivacious, bodacious blonde, and also does some modeling under the name Goldie Golden. In that guise, she’s often seen in Bizarre Guitar’s advertisements. In the Vault is self-produced with Shanda’s own cameras and equipment, usually with just one cameraman, and she edits it herself.

She’s originally from Orange County, but moved to Reno, which she calls her “adopted hometown,” in her 20s, during the ’90s.

She’s worked in the corporate world, doing escrow, and done different kinds of modeling, including classic pinup styles and modeling for life drawing classes. But even before she and Greg got married in 2009, music was a constant force in her life.

“I love music,” she said. “I really do love music. It’s been a saving grace for me my whole life. I don’t want to get too personal, but I had a really, really tough childhood.

There’s kids that have it worse, believe me, but I had it pretty bad. And music has always been my saving grace.”

Of the slew of awards that she and her husband won in this year’s Best Of, the one that stands out for her is the one attributed directly to her, Most Innovative Woman.

“I thought that was really special because my mother would have loved that I got an award like that,” she said.

She also advocates for the local Food Bank, and always makes sure there’s a food bank barrel in the store.

“People who know me know that the Food Bank is a passion of mine,” she said. “It’s important to me because I was a hungry teen, a homeless teen, and that was important. There’s all kinds of really great little organizations out there and they help you get coats and all this stuff. I think there’s nothing better than having your belly full.”

Social life Shanda compares Bizarre Guitar’s social media success with tape trading, a culture she says she saw a lot of growing up, wherein music fans would record and share

their favorite albums and make each other mix tapes.

“Heavy metal was started by tape trading,” she said. “I saw the boys doing that. I saw that culture kind of develop itself. For me, this is what we’re doing now with the internet. We can do that in a positive way. People put down the internet—oh, there are so many bad things on the internet. There are bad things if you look for it, but there are a lot of really great positive things. So we started a Facebook page for the store, and we slowly started to develop it.”

She said that part of that development was just sharing information and asking others to share it as well.

“For instance, I’ve got this kid in Japan that shares all my stuff,” she said. “They take that link and then they share, hey, like this page, or share, share, share. It’s going back to that tape trading thing. Everybody just shares it.”

She said that Greg does a lot of that development himself.

“He spends about three hours in the morning doing that on his own,” she said.

“He belongs to all kinds of different Facebook groups. If you get into Facebook and you really want to work it, and you don’t want to air your dirty laundry, and worry about what other people are doing, you will do very well with Facebook. And because he’s been around for a long time, we know a lot of people.”

They focus on cross promoting the store, the band, the web series and the modeling.

“She has her own site, cross promoted with Bizarre Guitar, Greg Golden Band, and then I go through and invite her friends to like my fan [pages],” said Greg. “It takes time. You have to have guys for certain tasks, buddies that you show them kind of what to do, if they want an extra thing, OK, this is what we need done. Ask those people to like our page.

Send those guys a promo or something. It’s not rocket science, man. But it takes fucking time, and [Shanda] and I are very aggressive about it.”

Greg says he currently has two employees he’s hired and trained to work on social media promotion.

“We’d be happy to help people with that if they need help,” said Shanda. “Or just contact Greg on Facebook and say, ’Hey man, will you share my page?’”

In addition to the informal “tape trading” development, however, there’s also paid

promotion on Facebook, which the Goldens take advantage of for all their endeavors.

“If you have a page and you have 100,000 people on the page, Facebook limits it now where you only hit 6 or 7 percent of those people total, but it’s how you do things,” said Greg. “There’s a lot of tricks to the trade, man. And it’s amazing, but I do know a lot about that. … I’m going to advertise my page, so instead of like seven percent, they make it like 12 percent, so you get that much more exposure. So, what I do that’s smart is that I go back through, and I have a programmed computer, and it’s just a stock thing, but I go back through and invite those people who are going to the event or respond in any way or comment on anything, to like the page.”

This kind of promotion requires dedication and a bit of an obsessive attitude.

“When ‘Long Way Home’ came out, I posted it on 400 walls once a week for six months,” Greg said.

Austin Pratt, the singer of the Reno punk band Spitting Image, has a different attitude about aggressive promotion on social media.

“We have used social media—Facebook, Instagram—to get people to come out to our shows, and when we put out our seven-inch [record], the label that did our seven-inch, Broke Hatre, did a national press release, so we got some coverage,” he said. “We do things like that, where it’s a natural progression—not being more than we are in terms of our press and media outreach. We try to be as straight-ahead and straightforward as possible, which means that if we’re not doing something, if we’re not playing a ton of local shows, then we’re not

ballot-stuffing and trying to be best band in Reno in the Reno News & Review. … I would only reach within my means. I would feel weird if people were voting me best band and they didn’t see me play a show. … I would prefer to have some authenticity or credibility.”

“Local bands don’t do shit to promote themselves,” said Greg. “And to be honest, they don’t have the right stuff to promote. It’s when you have something to promote and you have a great show, and you’re organized, and you’re on time, and you’re playing exactly what you’re supposed to be doing, and you let the people know who are interested because they’re your buddies. I’ve kept the mailing list since I started this freaking business. That’s how come I’ve survived, because I’ve got mailing lists that go back to the very beginning.”

Yelp, a consumer review website with user-generated content, is kind of the opposite of Facebook as far as control of presentation. Most business owners hate it. Yelp currently lists “37 reviews that are not currently recommended” and no “recommended reviews” for Bizarre Guitar.

Bizarre Guitar’s unrecommended reviews tend to be extreme—positive or negative. The negative, one-star reviews complain about customer service problems and some even claim that Golden sent them threatening, profanity-laden emails or Facebook messages. The positive reviews are almost all gushing, typo-heavy, fivestar reviews written by reviewers who, perhaps suspiciously, have not written any other reviews.

Many of them make very similar comma splice grammatical errors. (A Yelp user named David Ian B. claims that Golden sets up dummy Yelp

profiles.) The page also lists 16 reviews that have been removed from Yelp for “violating … content guidelines or terms of service.”

Despite their strong social media presence, the Goldens say they did no actual, specific promotion to help their success in the RN&R’s Best Of Northern Nevada contest.

“Just being honest, I thought it was rigged or something,” said Golden. “We always got second or something. And my band never got nominated. I don’t know if it’s just because of seeing us on Facebook or what, but we didn’t say vote for us—not a fucking thing, but we just ended up being voted. It kind of blew our mind. … But how could it not be for the gun shop? Or the guitar shop? Or even my band?

I mean, we smoke, we’re a fucking awesome band. Her being most innovative female? That gets my fucking vote and I know everybody in this fucking town, too. What else? Best place for women? We’ve got four or five gals, a rock ‘n’ roll gal, a heavyset gal. We got people who work here—women who work in kind of a men’s environment, guns and guitars, but they dig it.”

“Maybe some of our friends did it for us?” wondered Shanda. “Because there was a certain thing when it would come out, where people would get really upset—how did Maytan or whatever win over you guys? I don’t know.

Maybe it was just happy luck.”

“It was more than happy luck,” said Greg.

“The guys from Premier Records sent me a note saying that the News & Review thing had come out and that they had voted for me in a number of categories.”

This past summer movie season had some great movies ( Boyhood, Edge of Tomorrow, Guardians of the Galaxy ), some really good ones ( Godzilla, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ) and a lot of crap ones ( Transformers: Still No Megan Fox, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Oh Wait, There She Is ).

The equalizer

(Sept. 26): Denzel Washington stars in this adaptation of a TV show nobody really remembers. That said, he looks kind of badass in this thing.

Jimi: all is by my side

(Sept. 26): A Jimi Hendrix movie with no real Hendrix music in it. Andre Benjamin of OutKast is supposed to be really good in it, so watch the movie and then listen to your Jimi album in the car on the way home.

Gone Girl

(Oct. 3): David Fincher adapts another bestseller after The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Tattoo was my least favorite Fincher film, but I have high hopes for this one. I think Ben Affleck is a terribly underrated actor, I love Rosamund Pike on a level that could get me arrested someday, and the story involving a missing woman looks like the sort of eerie stuff Fincher thrives on.

I haven’t read the book, but I hear the ending blows. Rumor had it that Fincher changed the ending, but word out of press screenings says it sticks close to the book. I say, trust no one, everybody associated with this film and marketing is a liar. Go see for yourself. Take some initiative, damn it.

The end of the summer has been ungodly bad ( The Identical, The November Man ), so I am more than ready for the usual good stuff this time of year brings to cinemas.

This isn’t a complete listing, but a chronological summary of highlights presented to you because we love you and I just enjoy doing this kind of thing.

(Oct. 3): Nicholas Cage, who starred in a very good movie this year (Joe) replaces Kirk Cameron in what most certainly couldn’t possibly be anything resembling good. Even so, I can’t wait to see Cage as an airline pilot who must deal with the Rapture mid-flight.

Those eyes are going to bug out, those teeth are gonna show. I hope that there are lots of bees on his plane.

(Oct. 10): Robert Downey, Jr., plays an attorney who must come to the aid of his mean old dad (Robert Duvall) in this film that just looks mighty derivative to me.

(Oct. 17): Brad Pitt rides in a tank with Shia “I don’t wanna take a shower!” LaBeouf. That’s a lot of stank musk in a small, confined space.

Don’t even have to shoot mortars to kill the enemy. Just flip the lid on that sucker and the stench will kill ‘em all.

(Oct. 17): Nothing sounds cooler than this movie.

Michael Keaton stars as a guy who once played a superhero trying to star in a Broadway play. Directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel, 21 Grams), it looks like an insane acid trip that is oddly semi-autobiographical. It also has Naomi Watts in it, so I’m all about this thing.

(Nov. 7): A Disney animated movie about a boy and his robot that will make sickening amounts of money. You will buy the shirts, you will buy the action figures, and your wallet will hate you. Your wallet will constantly shift in your pocket towards your crotch as a painful reminder that you are a slave to film merchandising. Your kids, on the other hand, will think you are a God, so it all works out in the end.

(Nov. 14): An unrecognizable Steve Carell aims to show off his dramatic chops as all time psycho John du Pont in the latest from the ever reliable Bennett Miller. Also features Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo. Major awards buzz coming off of this one.

(Nov. 14): At long last, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are returning as the two dumbest guys to ever grace a comedy. This one looks to be a lot nastier than the original if the trailer’s grandma scene is any indicator.

(Nov. 21): I really liked the first Hunger Games sequel after not liking the first film at all. Here’s to a continuation of the good mojo as Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) continues to shoot arrows at fellow teens.

At the closing reception on Sept. 19, each piece on display was sold for $100, with all of the proceeds going toward Holland. “[Artists] were told that all of the donated work would be selling for $100 as opposed to being a part of a silent for more information, auction,” said Nick Larsen, curator of All visit www.hollandreno.

“If the artists were interested in participating, then they could determine what a $100 piece meant in relation to their work. There was no guidelines in terms of medium or size.”

Artists with some stake in Reno were asked to participate, according to Alisha Funkhouser, who manages the gallery at Holland.

“Some of the artists are from out of town but are from Reno or have participated in Reno art in some way,” she said.

This included artists like Audrey Love, a former RN&R contributor who currently resides in San Francisco, and Christina Lee, who lives in Long Beach.

Many of the other artists are current Reno residents.

“The artists in the show have all contributed to the visual arts side of Holland and helped define the character of the Holland Project Gallery in some way,” Larsen said. “The majority of the artists in the show have either exhibited work in solo or group shows at Holland in the past or have worked on the gallery curatorial committee to help select exhibitions for the space. They are artists who are invested in the Holland Project Gallery’s success and were willing to donate artwork for the sole purpose of sustaining and building on the level of exhibition programming happening in the gallery.”

The result was a unique show featuring art from across the spectrum, much of it mixed medium. Abstract paintings, tiny paintings, large photographs and floor-toceiling installations were all on display, and the result is an interesting perspective on the value of art.

This is the first time Holland Project, a nonprofit organization, has done a fundraiser in this format, but both Larsen and Funkhouser consider the event a success. Larsen doesn’t yet know how much money they raised, but most of the pieces were sold.

“We’re still doing the final counts on everything, and there are a few pieces that are tentatively sold that I’m reluctant to count until we actually have the money in hand,” Larsen says. “That being said, it was definitely an overwhelming majority of the work that was sold, and the event was very much a successful fundraiser for the Holland Project Gallery.”

Larsen says that it’s likely they’ll do a similar event next year.

“I think this show will become an annual event for Holland, though I may not be the one organizing it next year,” he says. “I have benefited greatly from the resources, exhibition space, and community support that Holland has provided, and things like this are a small way to give a little something back and do my small part to help keep Holland around forever. I know most, if not all, of the other artists in the show feel exactly the same way.” Ω

The menus are fun, exciting and chic. Chefs Josh Berreman and Adam Bronson are the co-conspirators in this eatery. They’ve taken their potentate-of-pans gig to new levels.

With Estee, they are a trio of gastronomic gonzo epicureans. I was there for a late lunch and the start of the happy hour.

I had basque braised beef tongue ($8) in a red sauce with new potatoes, tomatoes and pimento, a.k.a. paprika made from ground dried red chili peppers. This was savory with a smoky taste and a hint of heat. Stuffed cherry peppers ($9) filled with goat cheese, wrapped in applewood bacon and drizzled with saba—a liquid much like balsamic— had creamy centers which created a savory, tart explosion in my mouth finished with satisfying bacon and a hint of rich, tangy, dark vinegar.

Herb-roasted mushrooms ($10) sat atop a chunk of toast in a creamy, brandy sauce that was drawn in butter. Fungi never tasted so good, and every ingredient comes from local suppliers as often as possible.

(wheat) noodles and chicken in a savory broth with a few fresh veggies and some hard boiled eggs was satisfying without being filling.

There’s a decent wine list ($32$130) and a couple of dozen wines by-the-glass ($7-$12). I saw a 2012 Miner Rosato ($9) from Mendocino that worked with everything I tried.

It has a Sangiovese grape, and it’s made using the traditional saignée method of bleeding off juice from freshly crushed red grapes. This dry, medium-bodied rosé shows crisp cherry-pomegranate flavors on the palate with outstanding berry concentration.

Now let’s transition to happy hour. Barkeep Nicholas Stanton had me to try new original cocktails.

Camino Harvest was fresh Bosc pear juice, Tahoe Blue vodka, lemon juice, house made maple syrup Amaro, and Italian herb liqueur usually has a bittersweet flavor produced by macerating herbs, roots, flowers, bark and/or citrus peels in alcohol, homemade ginger beer and a sprinkle of cardamom on top. And you think Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga made music together? This was an amazing symphony of flavors that just kept building and building.

Number two newbie quaff was a Winnemucca Coffee. It's simple, Meletti Anisette Liqueur, a wonderful, elegant, licorice-flavored liqueur, almond-flavored honey, and a float of heavy cream. There are other handcrafted cocktails like a Passion Fruit Mimosa or Sangria Punch for $6. A pint of Session Larger and Porter from Hood River will cost you $4, mixed drinks for $5, and wine for $6 a glass.

I wouldn’t leave without dessert.

Baked Nevada ($10) includes lemon sage ice cream, vanilla sponge, meringue and crispy sage. But the piñon tart ($8) was to be my downfall: Pine nuts caked into a caramel honey loaf in a butter tart shell drizzled with créme Fraiche with a side of Lavender ice cream atop graham cracker crust and a beehive comb chip of Al’s Honey from Carson City.

In this 150th year of the Battle Born, it’s seems appropriate that Estee and his crew shape a cuisine to echo our past by forging a future and creating a nouveau repast.

Meet Megan Lee:

SIERRA GOLD GIRL Megan has been a part of the Sierra Gold team since August 2012 and says the thing she likes most about her job overall is how nice all of the guests are. Megan recently graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in speech pathology and audiology and is currently applying for a master’s program. In her spare time, Megan enjoys staying active by hiking, running and working out, and also volunteers her time in support of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

If these walruses could talk Tusk I was in the San Diego Comic Con audience last year when Kevin Smith, doing his annual thing, told the audience the story of the movie Tusk.

He shared how it started as a discussion about a strange personal ad he and producer Scott Mosier, his longtime friend and sometime producer, spotted while doing a podcast. The discussion turned into an improvised, jokey by horror film scenario where an old man takes Bob Grimm in a boarder and slowly transforms him into a walrus. Soon after the podcast and a call to his b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m audience to say “yay” or “nay” for a film of this scenario, Tusk went into production.

The finished product adheres rather closely to Smith’s original podcast plot line, with a few changes. It’s amazing that this movie was able to get made, let alone get a theatrical release.

Wallace Bryton and Teddy Craft (Justin Long and Haley Joel Osment) are two geeks who run a podcast called the Not-See Party.

They like to cover strange stories, and their latest is some dude in Canada who chopped off his leg while filming himself doing samurai tricks.

Wallace, who is somewhat of a dickhead and treats his girlfriend Ally (Genesis Rodriguez) like total garbage, heads to Canada for an interview. When that falls through, circumstances lead to him visiting the rustic and alienated abode of one Howard Howe (Michael Parks).

Howard regales Wallace with stories of meeting Ernest Hemingway, and having his life saved after a shipwreck by a friendly walrus. Wallace sips his tea and throws in the occasional crude comment. Then he hits the floor, unconscious.

What follows isn’t as disgusting as I hoped it would be, but it’s still gross and outlandish.

Howard starts amputating Wallace’s body parts and puts the finishing touches on a

permanent walrus suit. Before long, Wallace, sans tongue and certain limbs, is covered in a patchwork of human skin, with tusks fashioned from his leg bones jutting out of his face.

The resultant monstrosity is more of a goofy-gross laugh than a purely horrific visual, but it works on your basic horror/comedy level if you are a genre geek. Credit Long for going “Full Walrus” in this movie. Never has an accomplished actor achieved such a realistic vision of walrus characteristics. Actually, I think he might be the first to ever try.

Parks is masterful in this movie, transforming from a lonely, old, wheelchair bound man to a menacing, terrifying abductor in the time it takes him to sing “The Itsy Bitsy Spider.”

While Long goes Full Walrus, Parks goes totally insane, and the moment where the two share their first dinner together is blissfully creepy.

Things get progressively silly as Howe trains Wallace on how to be a walrus and eat fish with no hands. The film’s tone shifts even further into silliness when a well-known actor, in heavy makeup, shows up playing an investigator that helps Ally and Teddy search for Wallace.

Long does a great job of garnering sympathy for a real douchebag. Credit Smith for a flashback scene that shows Wallace being ridiculed by two store clerks. It’s essentially Wallace’s last normal human interaction before his transformation, and it assists in making you feel truly sorry for the guy.

As with his superior Red State, Smith loses it a bit with the ending. I like part of what he was trying to do, but it’s a bit too serious for this film, and somebody in the scene needed to be acting it with a knowing wink. There’s a point in the movie when Smith commits to unabashed lunacy, so a touching payoff seems a bit out of place. Stay for the credits, because you’ll hear some of the original podcast, and you get an extra scene.

As a glutton for good horror-comedy, I appreciate Tusk, even if it stumbles in parts.

It’s a movie that has Justin Long and Michael Parks battling to the death while wearing walrus suits made of human body parts. That’s enough for me to recommend it.

Tusk is bombing big time at the box office so, if you are a Smith fan and you want to see Justin Long get tortured, get to a theater fast before it leaves. Ω

A Walk Among the Tombstones

Dolphin Tale 2

Call this one The Empire Strikes Back of Dolphin Tale movies, in that it is slightly better than the original (not much— just slightly) and it has Tauntauns (actually, that’s not true). The likes of Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr. rejoin annoying child actors Nathan Gamble and Cozi Zuehlsdorff (yes, the Cozi Zuehlsdorff) for another round of gooey sentimentality involving dolphins. This time out, and probably due to all of those current issues involving whales and dolphins in captivity, the story spends a lot of time on rehabbing and releasing animals rather than confining them for human amusement. In addition to Winter, the dolphin with the prosthetic tail, there’s a pretty awesome sea turtle and a kooky pelican that kids will love. The movie kind of works as educational fare, but when it drifts away from the aquarium tanks it’s a real hell ride.

It must be said that Harry Connick Jr. can’t act for beans, Ashley Judd’s career has really hit the skids, and Morgan Freeman just has no business being within a million miles of this film. Gamble and Zuehlsdorff (yes, the Cozi Zuehlsdorff) are, I’m sure, a couple of exquisite human beings, but watching them in a movie is an annoying, tedious task. I love the dolphins and aquatic life in this film. It’s the humans who drive me crazy.

The Drop

This film features the final performance

by James Gandolfini, and it’s a beauty.

Luckily for the viewer, it’s not even the best thing about the movie. That would be the central performance delivered by Tom Hardy as Bob, a seemingly meek bartender of questionable intelligence who works for Cousin Marv (Gandolfini). Hardy disappears into this role, and will have you in awe that this is actually the guy who played Bane in The Dark Night Rises.

The bar that Cousin Marv and Bob occupy is a drop bar, where many of the gambling winnings in a seedier part of Brooklyn wind up in a safe.

One night, the bar is held up, and Cousin Marv has to hand over five grand. This puts Marv in debt to scary Chechen mobsters, now proprietors of the bar Marv once owned. Bob and Marv must devise a plan to pay the mobsters back, and when they do, they find themselves in an even deeper dilemma. Gandolfini’s Marv owes plenty to his Tony Soprano. He comes off like Tony after his power has been taken away, and his wife has abandoned him. The screenplay even gives him a nagging sister and a father in a rest home. Hardy delivers a character that’s always sympathetic, even when he reveals himself to be a bit more complicated than he first seems. It’s just another great performance in what is starting to become a rather impressive list of achievements.

The Identical

This is one of those faith-based movies like God’s Not Dead, Heaven is For Real, and Jesus Loved Jellybeans. It’s a take on that whole “What if Elvis’s twin brother, the one born stillborn a half hour before his arrival, had survived?” It replaces Elvis and Jesse Presley with the fictional Ryan Wade and Drexel Hemsley, both played by real-life Elvis impersonator and heinously terrible actor, Blake Rayne. Obviously, getting the rights to Elvis music would cost more than three

new Cadillacs, so the producers of this dreck wrote some crap Elvis copycat music and a shameless script that stars Elvis without really starring Elvis. I would encourage the likes of Lisa Marie Presley to sue the makers of this movie for obviously stealing her dad’s likeness, but then she would have to actually see this movie, and I wouldn’t wish that fate on anyone.

Somehow, this aberration attracted the likes of Ray Liotta, Ashley Judd, Seth Green and Joe Pantoliano to star in it. I watched this movie in complete disbelief, totally aghast, mouth agape, and laughing out loud at its wretchedness while sitting in a completely empty movie theater. The music, with such wannabe hits as “Boogie Woogie Rock and Roll” and “Sunrise Surfin’” is inexcusably awful, and the “Jesus Loves You” undertones are the equivalent of somebody walking up and smashing you in the face with a Bible and then shoving its pages down your throat while you are lying on the ground unconscious and bleeding.

The Maze Runner

The maze in the title is a fun spectacle full of shifting walls and weird spider robots. When the movie is in the maze it is good. When it’s out of the maze, it kind of stinks. Dylan O’Brien plays Thomas, a teenager transported to a camp surrounded by a large, constantly shifting maze. The camp is inhabited by other teens, including Alby (Aml Ameen), Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) and Gally (Will Poulter). They are all clueless about why they have been put there and how to escape, but they do send a squad of “runners” into the maze to map it out and search its outer reaches. The searches are fruitless until the mysterious Thomas takes charge. The mystery of the maze is intriguing, but the payoff is blah.

The Lord of the Flies drama between the leads is typical, boring stuff. I liked the design of the maze, and the maze turns out to be the film’s most interesting character. Second place goes to Poulter, who is a long way from the comic territory he staked out in We’re the Millers. Too bad the rest of the movie feels like a patchwork of many movies before.

Recycle this paper

Liam Neeson plays a former policeman and recovering alcoholic in director Scott Frank’s sometimes interesting and always unpleasant serial killer drama. Neeson’s Matt Scudder, after accidentally killing a civilian during a shootout, has gone rogue since his days on the force. Eight years have passed, and while he’s quit drinking, he’s doing some pretty unsavory jobs as a private investigator. He gets pulled into the world of a drug dealer after his wife has been kidnapped, and a lot of bad, bad things start happening. Neeson is very good in the film, but the script, written by Frank and based on the novel by Lawrence Block, has too many cardboard characters. Worst of all is a homeless kid sidekick (played by Astro).

There’s also the strung-out heroin addict, the whispery-voiced abductor of women, and the creepy guy who tends the cemetery and keeps pigeons on the roof … and he knows something.

I liked Neeson here, and I wouldn’t mind seeing the character again. Hopefully, the next film with this character—if there is one—trims the fat.

The November Man

Pierce Brosnan stars as Devereaux, a former CIA guy who winds up in places like Russia shooting people like nobody’s business and getting himself mixed up in their politics. For starters, there’s no way any American would get away with the crazy crap this guy does in this film. The film is rife with spy movie clichés. Devereaux has a wife and child who create “complications,” he has a former trainee he shepherded (Luke Bracey) on his trail, along with a couple of CIA heads of questionable character (Will Patton and Bill Smitrovich) messing with him. Yes, there is also the mysterious damsel in distress (Olga Kurylenko) who Devereaux must protect while dealing with his own serious drinking problem.

It’s your basic “who’s the real bad guy?” film, with everybody doing something relatively nasty at one time or another to keep things confusing. Brosnan’s character offs a lot of people, and even cuts an innocent woman’s femoral artery to make a dramatic point.

It’s all nonsense, directed poorly by Roger Donaldson.

The One I Love

A husband and wife (Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss) struggling in their relationship visit a retreat on the advice of their therapist (Ted Danson), and they make a startling discovery in one of the guest houses.

That discovery results in something that is beautifully clever in addressing the problems that plague many relationships, while also playing like a really cool Twilight Zone episode.

The big twist results in one of the better romantic comedies in years. Calling this a romantic comedy is almost an insult, but it has romance and it is funny, so I suppose it falls into that particular genre. I do think it’s a movie that many therapists will hate, because it could save some couples a bunch of money.

Duplass is making a name for himself as an understated, offbeat romantic comedy lead.

He’s actually the star of another of the more recent great romantic comedies, Safety Not Guaranteed. Moss, star of TV’s Mad Men, has a movie career spanning over two decades, but The One I Love makes it feel like she’s just arriving. (Available on VOD, Amazon.com and iTunes during a limited theatrical run.)

Foos When you see the name Foos, don’t picture a viking screaming at a dragon on top of a mountain, elongating by Kent Irwin the S. Instead, picture a group of much smaller men impaled on long poles, so that the word rhymes with “booze.” That’s right, the band name is not a reference to a move in a popular video game about dragons, but to foosball, a sport for which the members declare themselves “avid enthusiasts.”

When asked who the best foosball player among them is, they offer lead guitarist Luke Fuller and guitarist/vocalist Jake Mosling, the two senior members of the band.

“It depends on who’s had more to drink,” said Mosling. “But for the most part I’m better.”

It was beer that brought Foos together, one fateful night of drunken jamming in a basement.

The guys bonded over some of their preferences, which found them mostly in the same camp. Beer over weed, ass over tits, denim over leather, Sex Pistols over The Clash, Buddha over Jesus. They’re an even split between The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, a foot firmly in each camp.

They’re also divided over what to call themselves in terms of genre, as many labels could fit the bill— garage rock, punk rock, alternative, skate punk or alternative punk are all styles that go into the stew of Foos’ sound.

“I just call it rock and roll,” says Fuller.

Fuller originally joined Foos as a drummer. His dad introduced him to Led Zeppelin, and the legendary drumming of John Bonham inspired GREEN

him to practice and develop his own rhythmic style. New recruit Arlis Meyer sits the drum throne these days, with Fuller moving over to guitar. Meyer says he always looked up to his older brothers listening to punk and alternative rock albums back in high school.

As for Mosling, he recalls an old boyfriend of his mom’s, who he describes as a “washed-up punk.”

He bought the young Mosling his first Ibanez bass.

“I just went crazy with it,” says Mosling.

Foos play with a grungy, distorted tone at a brisk, high-octane pace. They agree this adrenaline is fueled in no small part by their passion for sports. When he’s not bouncing his sticks on a drum, Meyer bounces a basketball on a court. Fuller’s fast guitar work is a match for his deadly speed on the soccer field. As for Mosling and bassist Graham Dickinson, their preferred sport is hockey, their favorite player Bobby Orr. Foos’ sound also imparts the rebellious spirit of skateboarding on its listeners, boarding serving as a common ground for their disparate athletic preferences. The shredding guitars, tumbling drums, and driving bass of the band’s music feels a lot like watching a competitive sport, like watching them play foosball, trying to one-up each other. But Foos manages to channel the chaos into a powerful sonic assault at the audience.

As for lyrics, Mosling tries not to be obscure, preferring the everyday to the ethereal. Dickinson and Meyer also prefer to leave the high-mindedness elsewhere, studying at University of Nevada, Reno to be mechanical engineers. When they get together as a band, they just want to rock.

Mosling distills his philosophy through an athlete his dad introduced him to, the long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine.

“He was a total douchebag— Prefontaine, not my dad,” laughed Mosling. “Well, maybe my dad too.

But he just showed me that you gotta be out there.”

Mosling further ponders the thought over a cigarette for a moment, and then hammers the point home.

“Yeah, that’s how I’d say it. You just gotta be out there.” Ω ART OF THE STATE

Evil Dead: The Musical Good Luck Macbeth presents the campy hit musical based on Sam Raimi’s 1980s cult classic horror films. Evil Dead tells the tale of five college kids who travel to a cabin in the woods and accidentally unleash an evil force. The hapless youths are turned into demons, save for one young man who fights off his friends until dawn to stay alive. Sounds terrifying until you hear the characters belt out numbers like “All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons,” “Look Who’s Evil Now” and “Do the Necronomicon.” The musical opens on Friday, Sept. 26, and runs through Friday, Oct. 31, at Good Luck Macbeth Theater, 713 S. To leech according to her needs My roommate’s girlfriend is unemployed and just hangs around our place all week, even when he’s at work.

(She has her own place but is never there.) She’s very wasteful with our utilities. Yesterday, after work, I found her in the living room watching TV with the air conditioning on full blast—even though she also had all the windows open and, for some reason, had turned on our gas fireplace! When I muttered something to my roommate about her kicking in for utilities, he retorted that my girlfriend isn’t paying any extra. Well, she is here a night or two a week, has a job, and doesn’t run up our electric bill.

Your problem started with going into a roommate situation without rules—without a written document spelling out how things would work between you and how they’d work if something weren’t working. Signing a roommate contract (like this example from Nolo’s “Every Tenant’s Legal Guide”: bit.ly/roommatecontract) might sound unnecessarily formal. However, it’s wise to do whenever you’re rooming with anything more animated than a cactus. Remember, to be human is to be annoying—as, for example, by letting another human move in and cause climate change in your living room.

The fair thing is to get Jackie Brownout to start forking over for the utilities—before it occurs to her to run the dryer all night because the white noise helps her sleep. But the fair thing isn’t always the smartest thing. Consider what this is costing you—and what it could cost you. Compare bills from the previous year to get an idea of how much 32 | RN&R |

she’s actually sending the bill up. No, putting every power source in the house on full blast isn’t free, but her usage probably doesn’t add more than $10 or $20 to your monthly bill. And no, it isn’t fair that you’re paying half of that.

However, getting into this with your roommate might lead to your putting the $10 or so you’d be saving on moocher energy charges toward doughnuts for the movers you’d be paying hundreds of dollars to haul your stuff to storage until you could find your next apartment.

If you decide it would eat away at you too much to be paying for her, say something to your roommate, but in a mellow way, over a beer. Tell him you really like his girlfriend (because diplomacy, not truth, is life’s little lubricant). As far as you’re concerned, she’s welcome to stay over as much as she wants, but you’d like a new house policy: Girlfriends who stay over four or more days a week need to kick in for utilities. Stress that this applies to your girlfriend, as well, and add that the particular roommate, not the girlfriend, should be responsible for the payment.

The last thing you need is to be going all collection agent on this woman—preferable as it might be to asking her to cut to the chase and heat the house by burning stacks of your money on the coffee table. Ω

The wealthy one percent of the population has been getting progressively wealthier.

Meanwhile, the poor are becoming steadily poorer. I’m worried there is a metaphorically similar trend in your life. Am I right? If so, please do all you can to reverse it. Borrow energy from the rich and abundant parts of your life so as to lift up the neglected and underendowed parts. Here’s one example of how you could proceed: For a while, be less concerned with people who think you’re a star, and give more attention to those who accept and love your shadow side.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “I choose

a lazy person to do a hard job,” says Bill Gates, the world’s second-richest man, “because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.” That’s good counsel for you right now, Taurus. Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) was an influential French photographer, a pioneer of photojournalism who helped transform photography into an art form. verb “cicurate” is defined as “to tame or domesticate” or “to make mild or innocuous.” But it once had an additional sense: “to reclaim from wildness.” It was derived from the Latin word cicurare, which meant “to bring back from madness, to draw out of the wilderness.” For your purposes, Scorpio, we will make cicurate your theme, but concentrate on these definitions: “to reclaim from wildness, to bring back from madness, to draw out of the wilderness.” In the coming weeks, you will be exploring rough, luxuriant areas of unknown territory. Moore is the British author who wrote the graphic novels Watchmen and V for Vendetta. He is now nearing completion of Jerusalem, a novel he has been working on for six years. It will be more than a million words long, almost double the size of Tolstoy’s War and Peace, and 200,000 words longer than the Bible. “Any editor worth their salt would tell me to cut two-thirds of this book,” Moore told the New Statesman, “but that’s not going to happen.” Referring to the author of Moby Dick, Moore adds, “I doubt that Herman Melville had an editor. If he had, that editor would have told him to get rid of all that boring stuff about whaling: ‘Cut to the chase, Herman.’” Let’s make Moore and Melville your role models in the coming week, Aquarius. Mark Gibbons At a meeting last week of the Nevada Judicial Historical Society, there was a discussion of how well Nevada students are taught about the judicial system. One of the participants in that discussion was Nevada Supreme Court Justice Mark Gibbons, currently serving in the rotating post of chief justice. We spoke with him after the meeting.

Given all we’ve just heard, does the judiciary in Nevada have a program to educate school children about what it’s all about?

You know, it doesn’t, and I think it’s a good idea that we maybe do a videotape [with] brief introductions to courses of how it works and how it relates to the students. I would support doing that.

Do the members of the Supreme Court go around to schools now?

Yes, we do. We go around to schools all the time. And we try to do oral arguments at high schools and pick subject-appropriate cases for the high school students. And they ask questions about how the court works.

So we do that several times a year. Our next high school will be Oct. 8 in Las Vegas.

We’re going to do Palo Verde High School oral arguments.

Tell me an example of what an appropriate case would be.

Well, it would be usually—we’d want to get cases they’re interested in, such as criminal cases, or drug cases maybe with sniffing dogs and all like that. But not really involved with sexual abuse or those types of more sensitive materials—more general interest to the students.

Have you ever picked historical cases and retried them?

What’s the response been like?

The response has been great. I mean, the students loved it, and we keep getting invited to come back to the high schools.

We’re trying to spread it out and try to go all around the state and go to different schools when we do this.

You know, we haven’t, but that may be a good idea to do that. But right now we just do, actually, current cases that are pending, for the high school students.

And then we usually sit and we usually have lunch with the student officers and all, and answer questions about how the court works. Ω

Does this cost, and how do you pay for it?

The big march of the People against Climate Change took place in NYC earlier this week—Sunday, Sept.

21—not that you would have seen any mention of it in the press. I looked in the Gazette for a mention of the march on Monday morning. Nope.

The Chronicle? Negative. LA Times?

Zilch. OK, fine and whatever. I’m sure they have their reasons. Mustn’t let anything get in the way of the latest story about ISIS banning topless oil wrestling in downtown Mosul.

So I’ll just inform you that the march was quite the gathering, with estimates of anywhere from 300,000 to 400,000 people in the streets of Manhattan to proclaim their concern for the way things are going here in the Golden Age of CO2. When I first wrote about this event a few weeks ago, I may have been a tad hyperbolic, predicting this thing would attract a mill or more (OK, OK, so I got a little breathless). Still, 300,000 is nothing to sneeze at, and a figure I reckon will be noticed by those who

Lake City? Yep, in an SLC burb called Saratoga Springs, where 22-year old mulatto Darrien Hunt was killed by a pair of cops who flipped out when Hunt waved his three foot long sword at them.

Why Hunt was brandishing a sword will never be known, since he, like so many other young black men, ended up permanently unable to explain himself. The officers say Hunt lunged at them with his sword, frightening them so very, very much that they had no choice but to swiss cheese him with a six pack of slugs as he fled. Yes, Hunt didn’t attack the cops—he ran away. Or tried to. The fatal shot hit him square in the back.

Once, just once, I’d like to read about a black male suspect not shot dead by trigger happy cops living out their Dirty Harry fantasies. When did this country’s police decide to revisit Alabama 1906? Ω
