The Unfair Tax

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Sometimes I hate this weekly deadline. Paper comes out on Thursday, right? Well, it was about noon that I got the word from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart that they’re flying me out Monday to be on air Tuesday.

So while I’ll know how it has gone by next Thursday, I’m writing from ignorance right now.

On the other hand, by some measures, I’m the boss, and maybe I’ll just have this column in place in case the plane goes down. I should have enough of my wits about me next Tuesday afternoon to tell you all about how it went.

How did this go down? Well, on Aug. 28, I got this email: “I’m a senior producer with The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and I’m working on a story about the difficulty with finding accurate, objective statistics on fatal police shootings in this country.

I’ve read about your work, and I was hoping to see if you had some time to talk about some of the challenges you’ve faced with your Fatal Encounters project.

Feel free to call me at your earliest convenience.”

I was so floored, I didn’t even realize he asked me to call him.

I certainly lose some cool points there because I waited for him to call me. That’s kind of hilarious. It’s also peculiarly arrogant I didn’t ask where he heard of my work. “Of course, those New York guys know about the RN&R. They probably fly in just to pick it up.” Anyway, we had several conversations, back and forth emails, too, and on Sept. 4, he wrote, “If we wanted to fly you in for an interview (on us, of course), what would your availability be next week?”

I told him I’d check my calendar, but I thought I could work something out, as long as it didn’t make me late for my classes at the university.

At any rate, they left me hanging fire for a whole week, until today, a few hours ago, in fact. Anyway, I hope you’ll feel free to mock me mercilessly if I screw this up.

If I can’t get a column in on deadline, I’ll tell you all about it next week. What’s the proper etiquette, anyway? Am I supposed to take gifts?

Re “Ticked off” (Feature story, Sept. 4): It’s great to see articles like this coming about as the controversy continues about the people who suffer from “chronic Lyme.” It is also a shame that the Centers for Disease Control, the holder and recorder, of what they deem are “all” of the Lyme patients really have no idea just how far reaching this disease is. The doctors who treat patients with “chronic Lyme” are scrutinized by the American Medical Association so they choose not to use the diagnosis of “chronic Lyme.” For instance, no where on my medical records does it state anything about my disease because I am being treated with alternative methods by my “medical” doctor, and she is afraid of the repercussions.

So when the CDC throws around these numbers, we “Lymies” just laugh. This problem is much greater than anyone really knows. It’s real and needs to be faced dead on. The AMA and the alternative medicine practitioners need to learn how to play nice in the sandbox.

Our current national debt is around $17,742,849,500 we owe China and others. Far from Jacksonian democracy, I’d say! To date, Andrew Jackson is the only US president ever to retire the nation’s debt. Though criticized for his treatment of native Americans, the ideal he promoted was to let the people govern themselves rather than government govern the people.

He eliminated the Bank of the United States and returned the funds to banks within the states. During a huge real estate bubble, he sold off western federal lands, took the profit and paid off the debt. You have to wonder if it would be better today if the feds sold off Yosemite, Yellowstone, and other federal lands to private investors—with land use regulations, of course—take that money and at least make a huge dent in the $17.7 trillion debt.

Re “10 things I hate about Burning Man” (Feature story, Sept. 6, 2007): It’s pretty hard to take someone seriously when they say something as ignorant and childish as this: “Rave culture is for losers and idiots.” Oh, I suppose I’m a loser for enjoying raves and techno music. Man, I’m such an idiot for expressing myself! Burning Man isn’t the same experience for every person. Claiming it’s one big party may have been primarily how you interpreted it, but everyone is free to give/take from it how they please.

Complicit Re “Compliant” (News, Sept. 4): They are so compliant that a teacher not once but twice walked out of an IEP [individualized education program] meeting and bullies my son on a continual basis as well as not following his IEP. Want to know what the result has been for this teacher? Not a damned thing. I have repeatedly phoned the superintendent for special ed as well as her principal and not a one thing was done. She is still teaching students.

Great system, isn’t it? Sure, close to federal compliance, especially in regards to IEP’s and the law that it is illegal for a teacher to get up and walk out.

This land is our land Re “Land of the lost” (Letters to the Editor, Sept. 4): Robert Kessler of Las Vegas asked why the “Feds” own up to 85 percent of Nevada’s land.

The answer is water. Most of the state receives less than 10 inches of rainfall per year. There is not enough water to farm or develop most of the state’s land. Based on this fact, the “Feds” determined the best allocation of the land would be multiple use. Cattle ranching has always been marginal in Nevada, but the Bundy Klan and other so called “Sovereign Citizens” believe the federal land should be turned over to the state or its 1,500 private ranches.

There are 2.8 million people in Nevada. It would be unfair to allow these 1,500 ranchers to lock up the millions of acres of public land that we all now share in Nevada. It’s true that wildfires and drought have made it necessary to cut back on ranchers’ subsidized grazing allotments. But the ranchers are often compensated by the Bureau of Land Management for this reduction.

Ranchers would likely fare worse under state ownership because of higher and more realistic grazing fees. What this small, vocal antigovernment minority of ranchers and corporate elite ultimately really want is to see this public land (that belongs to all of us) privatized and put into their hands.

Police need review Re “Police psychology” (Feature story, Aug. 28): I would like to comment on police homicides. As long as police departments review their own—or even are reviewed by different police departments—police homicides will continue. We need independent reviews of all police shooting in order to ensure objectivity in the review. Perhaps then police homicides—I read 405 in the U.S. last year—will decrease.

Interesting to read that other civilized countries — the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, etc.—have 0-5 or so police shootings a year. Yet the U.S. had 405! Of course it helps that in those countries their citizens aren’t

Government props up free market A reader comment on Sheila Leslie’s column last week on Telsa begins, “It’s an interesting environment to live in when an entrepreneur [Tesla CEO Elon Musk] who has built successful ventures like PayPal and SpaceX gets a pile of vitriol from the left when he successfully makes a deal to expand his ‘green’ business. This is the difficulty with statist philosophy.”

Hardly. If there is a statist in this situation, it is Musk.

As a car maker, he was invented by corporate welfare. He owes his life to statism. Otherwise, why are free enterprisers across the nation—Breitbart, Forbes, Human Events, Fox, Wall Street Journal, Business Insider—scoffing at what Tesla and Nevada did to Nevadans?

Tesla is kind of an artificial corporation, less free enterprise and more a government agency—unprofitable and funded by government. Both the federal government and California pay customers big to buy its cars, taxpayers paying the tab. It has been kept afloat by taxpayer subsidies of various types from the federal government, California, Illinois and now Nevada. Nevada taxpayers are now privileged to be burdened by the welfare tab at both state and federal tax levels. And it will linger on for a generation.

Tesla would not exist if it weren’t for government, to the point that Forbes magazine has suggested the public would benefit most if Tesla would stop selling cars. “Tesla didn’t generate a profit by selling sexy cars, but rather by selling sleazy emissions ‘credits,’ mandated by the state of California’s electric vehicle requirements,” the magazine observes. Nevada is now in on this scam.

“The bill for last quarter was $68 million,” the magazine went on. “Absent this shakedown of potential car buyers, Tesla would have lost $57 million, or $11,400 per car.”

I like spring, just because I like to see all the flowers.

In an editorial titled “Nevada gets Musked,” the Wall Street Journal observed, “Tesla will be exempt from property taxes for 10 years and sales taxes for 20 years at a cost of $1.1 billion to taxpayers. Tesla will also get $195 million in transferable tax credits that it can sell to other businesses. Since Nevada has no personal or corporate income tax, Tesla will effectively operate tax-free in the state. … Not so smart are the Nevada politicians who seem to have no idea how thoroughly they’ve been fleeced.”

How bad does corporate welfare have to be when the Wall Street Journal finds it offensive?

Then there is our Great Basin, a precious Western resource. The moment the California Legislature adjourned this month without providing Musk relief from environmental protection, Musk turned to Nevada government, which knows something about how to abuse the land.

Gov. Brian Sandoval has become the Merv Griffin of governors. In his last years, Griffin spent his fortune buying properties at outlandish prices, as when he bought Paradise Island from the wily Donald Trump for more than three times its value. Tesla wanted half a billion dollars.

Sandoval gave them twice that, and then added another $300 million for good measure. The cost of each of those 6,500 Storey County jobs, if they develop (Tesla only promised “up to” 6,500) to taxpayers is in the neighborhood of $150,000 each. Guess who’ll pay? One Las Vegas columnist said Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California dodged an expensive bullet.

The worst player in this whole mess is Nevada journalism, which so swooned for Musk and Tesla that it reversed Finley Peter Dunne’s famed description of journalism’s mission. For months, our calling in Northern Nevada has comforted the comfortable and afflicted the afflicted. Ω |

Our board is not boring The script read like a bad reality show, full of “he said/she said,” people storming out of rooms, tears and recriminations. The scenes were repeatedly described as chaotic and uncomfortable, with an unbelievable plot revolving around a series of “non-meeting meetings” and a cast of by elected officials gone rogue.

Sheila Leslie In the end, the Nevada Attorney General concluded the Washoe County School Board of Trustees violated the Open Meeting Law six times on that fateful day of July 22, and suggested that six of the seven trustees each be assessed a fine of $500 per incident. Last week, the six trustees agreed to settle the case by paying half that amount, $1,500 per person, from their personal bank accounts.

The attorney general’s complaint impassively documented the secret meetings, but it was the transcripts of interviews of each participant in the drama by the AG’s investigator that captured my attention. All viewed the day’s events through their personal lens, coloring their perceptions of the

actions of others while describing their own roles in the debacle in the best possible light.

Here’s how Trustee Howard Rosenberg explained the varying recollections of the day’s events: “In every situation, there’s three sides to every story: your side, my side and the truth. It doesn’t mean anybody’s lying. It simply means we’re seeing things differently.”

It all started with an anonymous tip, apparently from one auditor to another, that Superintendent Martinez was not who he held himself out to be in terms of an academic credential.

The allegation quickly became murky, an obvious smokescreen for the real issues lying just under the surface. At least some of the trustees were clearly anxious to seize on a perceived opportunity to separate the superintendent from his duties.

Reading the transcripts is captivating, as the drama escalates quickly to the point of no return. Trustees are emotional, upset, and in one case, “almost catatonic.” The superintendent is described as agitated,

Just like any reality show, there are lots of loose ends and potential for more conflict in the weeks ahead.

But I won’t be signing any recall petition, an effort led by self-appointed leaders from the business community who want to replace the board with their cronies whom they presume will right the shaky boat.

Change will arrive without a recall. There’s an election in two months that will bring one or two new members to the board and an additional member has indicated he will resign by the end of the year for health reasons. The ship will steady itself through hefty personal fines, a renewed spotlight on the board’s actions, and hopefully a Superintendent who increases communication and improves relationships.

One thing is certain: this reality show will have another season.

Viewers can only hope for less drama and more attention on what really matters, our children’s education. Ω

Talk quickly turns from the arcane details of Illinois CPA regulations to the need for an immediate resignation, the size of a potential severance package, and whether school police should escort the superintendent off the property.

There are no fisticuffs but plenty of hand wringing about how quickly events are transpiring.

There were lots of hurt feelings and a superintendent who felt ambushed. One trustee believed Martinez had treated him with contempt for some time, whining that “Human beings make mistakes.

When they do, you put it right as best you can, but you don’t go after them with an ax. He [Martinez] tends to do that. He doesn’t know as much about education as he thinks he does.”

Both sides bludgeoned each other with threats of public exposure, not realizing that it would quickly become too late to escape the swelling media frenzy that would result in everyone looking petty and unprofessional.

Take from the poor and give to the rich On Sept. 7, a beaming Gov. Brian Sandoval announced that Nevada won the derby to bring Tesla Motors to Northern Nevada. In exchange for the usual tax breaks used to lure specific businesses, Nevada is promised 3,000 construction jobs and then a state of the art automobile battery by Brendan Trainor factory with over 6,000 well paying, permanent jobs. This is definitely a big deal for Northern Nevada, which has been trying to diversify its economy with tech and science jobs for decades.

Forgive an incorrigible libertarian for pointing out that Tesla Motors is a heavily subsidized corporation supported by the very tax dollars that Republicans claim to want to reduce.

Their RNC website says they want to “abolish the IRS.” Luring Tesla Motors to Nevada with special tax breaks when the corporation is also drinking at Uncle Sam’s tax tit is a trifle shabby even by Republican Party standards.

Part of the reason Tesla chose Nevada was the promise to modify existing law—the Legislature had to be called into special session—to make it safe for Tesla to market its cars direct to consumers, instead of through car dealerships. In Gov. Chris Christie’s state of New Jersey, the car dealers formed a lobby and got laws passed requiring Tesla to sell through the dealership model. I am proud that Nevada is more libertarian than New Jersey, but that's like saying Las Vegas is superior to Atlantic City—a no-brainer.

In Las Vegas, there is growing opposition to the city’s plans to finance a new soccer stadium with tax dollars. Sports stadiums are a losing proposition for taxpayers with almost all the benefits of the tax subsidies going to billionaire team owners. The realized economic benefits of stadium deals by local government is consistently disappointing. Economic impact studies with a “multiplier effect” claimed

for tax dollars spent are consistently biased for public investment that never works out as planned. Good for Bob Beers and other Las Vegas councilmen who at least are putting up a fight.

Always the forgotten man is the ordinary taxpayer, whose money is constantly swiped to support public/ private giveaways by the political class he has no interest in. Crony capitalists live in the best houses and drive the best cars because they can persuade a government to rig the market for their benefit. The left complains about CEO salary disparities, but they seldom discuss the role of the state in creating those disparities through its myriad interventions in the economy. Both major parties are composed primarily of representatives of large monied interests who fight each other to a bloody pulp to keep the tax spigots open to their pals.

The immediate environmental benefits of electric cars is negligible.

The electricity has to come from somewhere, and coal is still king in most of the country. Battery life is too short, but the big breakthrough is always just around the next corner.

Greens have been pushing electric cars as the only best solution to pollution for decades. They are using the state to forcefully guarantee a profit for a non-profitable product, while proclaiming their moral superiority over the subsidizers of Boeing and Haliburton because their tax rip off is more enlightened than the other tax rip off. In politics the ends always seem to justify the means.

No one considers the classical liberal ideal of a state that dispenses justice instead of favors, and attracts investors to it through policies that benefit everyone not just the privileged few. Perhaps that ideal is unattainable. But someone should at least bring it up once in a while. Ω

And across town The Nevada Legislature wasn’t the only place in Carson City where public moneys found their way into private pockets.

The Nevada Commission on Mineral Resources gave $2,500 to the mining industry political organization, Nevada Mineral Exploration Coalition, to go to a trade show.

In an email message, a Commission spokesperson said, “NMEC staffs the booth at these trade shows and hands out geologic maps and publications done by the Division of Minerals.

The intent is to attract companies to invest in mineral exploration and development in Nevada, which is consistent with the statutes for the Division of Minerals. The donation is made directly to the trade show for the booth, not NMEC. The funds used come from mining claim fees collected annually by the Division of Minerals.”

The Coalition came to notice in 2012 as one of seven mining industry organizations that poured money into a state senate district in Nevada to elect Republican Greg Brower over Democrat Sheila Leslie. As a state legislator, Leslie, now an RN&R columnist, sponsored a measure to repeal a mining industry tax loophole from the Nevada Constitution. Leslie’s measure will appear on the ballot in November.

Constitutional amendment fails A proposed U.S. constitutional amendment failed in the Senate Aug. 11, and Nevada’s senators split on the issue.

The measure, sponsored by Sen. Tom Udall, would have carved out an exception in the First Amendment in order to negate the effect of U.S. Supreme Court rulings that in campaign finance, money is speech, that corporations are persons entitled to First Amendment protection, and that aggregate limits on campaign contributions violate the first amendment. Those rulings have turned a flood of money loose.

Democratic Sen. Harry Reid supported the amendment and Republican Sen. Dean Heller voted against it.

The measure had no chance of winning approval because constitutional amendments require a supermajority, but Reid brought it up for a vote to force Republicans to cast an unpopular vote during an election campaign.

The measure is opposed by the American Civil Liberties Union, which issued a statement after the vote: “But history has taught us to be wary of proposals that would empower the government to monitor, regulate, and ultimately criminalize political speech. For instance, with the McCainFeingold bill in 2002, Congress made it a criminal offense for groups like the ACLU or Sierra Club to even mention a candidate in certain communications paid for by general treasury funds in the crucial run-up period to elections and primaries. The constitutional amendment under consideration in the Senate is even broader in some ways. It would allow the federal and state governments to limit spending, including spending by private citizens, that lawmakers say could ‘influence elections.’”

Time warp The campaign of Kate Marshall, who is trying to move from state treasurer to secretary of state, sent out a fund-raising message that read in part: “[S]tarting at midnight tonight, lawmakers cannot accept campaign contributions during the special session or for 15 days after it ends. With the midnight deadline looming, Kate’s opponent [state legislator Barbara Cegavske] has kicked her fundraising efforts into overdrive to raise money by the end of the day. We need to keep up the pace to make sure Kate has the funds necessary to win this election in November. We have a goal of $1,000 before midnight tonight. Can you contribute $5 right now to help reach our $1,000 goal?”

The message was dated Sept. 9 but apparently didn’t get mailed on time. It arrived on Sept. 12, the day after the special session ended.

Tesla triumphs Sandoval signs off on $1.3 billion untax package Carole Vilardo stalked the legislative halls during the special session of the Nevada Legislature. She represents by the Nevada Taxpayers Association, Dennis Myers a business group. Except possibly—and only possibly—for state budget directors, she knows more about state taxation than anyone.

One of her concerns with the Tesla deal was that green energy abatements have a history in Nevada, and they were not always successful. She recalled one abatement that was created in the early days of energy alternatives when the state was trying to encourage their use. An abatement was provided on the assumption that businesses would use it for their buildings. One casino used it for its entire footprint—parking lots and all—and ate up most of the abatement provided. Drafting legislation can be tricky.

Speed and secrecy prevailed So can the makeup of the legislature. Term limits have seldom had an impact because there is such heavy turnover. Few legislators stay long enough to be termed out. This means that there are few legislators who have much knowledge of how past legislation was handled. That casino eating up most of an abatement is institutional knowledge that

few people—least of all legislators—have. So Vilardo was putting it in their ears.

“A lot of these legislators have been spoken to about it.” she said.

“I know because I have done some of it.”

That was her principal concern with the Tesla deal. If that was handled, she was satisfied.

That was true of most players at the special session. Their main interest was to tinker with the deal, not to stop it or alter it significantly.

With northern journalists serving as cheerleaders, little scrutiny had been done and so the public had only a rosy projection of what the Tesla deal meant. In the handful of hours after the deal was announced and before the legislators went into special session, the two Las Vegas dailies quickly turned out some rigorous analysis of the Tesla deal, but by then the juggernaut was rolling.

Gov. Brian Sandoval worked hard to keep the public from being involved and a debate from getting started. The negotiations with Tesla were secret. Once the governor announced the deal, he raced to get the lawmakers into special session as fast as possible so critics would not get traction and debate would not get underway. The actual language of the legislation was not available for the public to examine until

the last possible moment. Indeed, the governor didn’t get around to actually calling the legislators into session until the night before they met, when many of them had already arrived. Since the governor’s call to the legislators contains the legislative agenda, the agenda, too, was withheld from the public. Information was held closely, preventing anyone from raising questions or slowing things down.

Once the legislative session was underway, a good deal of work was done in political party caucuses barred to the public.

The governor suggested there was nothing to debate, a notion seconded by supporters of the Sandoval deal like Washoe County Commissioner Marsha Berkbigler, who said, “I can’t see a downside to it” on Nevada Newsmakers.

When there was rare scrutiny by journalists, Tesla backers complained. Assemblymember James Hardy of Clark County, a Democrat, complained that the press was misrepresenting the legislation as Tesla-specific, and columnist Steve Sebelius answered him that Tesla was the only corporation that would be affected by two provisions in the then-existing bill drafts, and Tesla was getting its own $103 million highway built for it by the state.

Tesla itself had five lobbyists registered, though there may have been others behind beards like public relations firms. They kept their heads down to avoid giving anyone a target.

There were plenty of lobbyists representing other entities. Water districts and private water corporations, chambers of commerce, the Burning Man festival, teachers, real estate salespeople, contractors, the state’s courts, hospitals, vineyards, law enforcement and casinos all had their lobbyists on hand.

So did the automotive world, including General Motors and the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. And so did insurance companies and theatrical production people, who were directly affected, their existing corporate welfare reduced to help pay off Tesla.

Democrats, who early on had talked tough and skeptical about corporate welfare, ended up fighting to protect a slightly larger portion of welfare for the film industry that was supposed to go to Tesla.

Most of the lobbyists were there to watch and report back to their clients. Only a few felt any direct impact, but the implications of the legislation were sweeping, so they needed to be on hand. They’ll be affected down the road.

Though nowhere near the size of the Hoover Dam project— some legislators have made the comparison—the Tesla plant will likely trigger a growth spurt unlike any this region has seen since the summer of 1978, when, in a dazzling display of bad municipal planning, six new casinos opened in Reno. People poured in from around the nation looking for jobs, which were plentiful—indeed, some could work two or three jobs, and did—but there were few places to live and the sewage treatment plant was running out of capacity and had to be expanded by a quick bond issue. People lived in their cars or at a roadside rest stop east of Sparks. Traffic problems became endemic. The impact hit the valley like a sledgehammer and overnight a controlled growth faction gained legitimacy and public office. So real estate and developer lobbyists had a lot to watch last week.

The people imported to work at Tesla will put new strain on water and schools. The workers are expected to live mostly in Washoe County and Fernley in Lyon County. While taking out $1.25 billion in abatements, Tesla will put $7.5 million in for schools, which is not expected to come close to paying its way. Lawmakers sought to guarantee that half the hirings would be of local residents, but lawyers who specialize in employment law said such a provision would be unlikely to survive court scrutiny. One said citizens are free to cross state borders in their search for work and must be treated equally and not burdened in

their search for work by local laws.

The principal case law in the field involves government employees, not private workers—though given the federal and state funding tied up in Tesla, it’s difficult to determine which applies here.

A few legislators like Richard Segerblom of Clark County noted that the state never has money for things like schools but manages to find mammoth abatements for Tesla. Labor unions who sought wages at the prevailing regional level failed.

The financial community is not impressed Sen. Joe Hardy got attention for saying of Storey County’s rapid local approval of Tesla, “That’s a lesson we could learn in southern Nevada.” The fact is, if Tesla had said it wanted to manufacture meth, the county might have waved them through just as quickly. Nevada’s small counties are notorious for approving dirty industries, as with a one time Lincoln County plan to allow two hazardous waste incinerator projects to be built (subsequently disallowed by the state) or Nye County’s willingness to welcome the now-defunct Yucca Mountain high level nuclear waste dump.

Given that one of Gov. Sandoval’s goals was to increase Nevada’s credibility in attracting new companies to Nevada, the reaction may not have been what he anticipated. The special session’s work was denounced in the major organs of the financial community, such as the Wall Street Journal, Business Insider and Forbes. Ω

Building healthy soil and keeping it that way has been a prominent concern in farming ever since the Dust Bowl in the ’30s, but in Nevada—the state with the lowest annual precipitation in the country—it’s a whole by Sage Leehey different battle.

Cover crops are used to “cover” the soil between growing seasons of s age l@ whatever crop—or crops—that particular farm might be selling. They’re news review.c om important because they help to avoid erosion, and they help restore nutrients to the soil. But with little to no rainfall, cover crops cost much more in the Silver State than in other parts of the country.

“Cover crops are really hard for Nevada,” said Albert Mulder, the state agronomist for the National Resources Converservation Service. “It’s extremely hard because there’s no dry land farming in the state. So where does that put us with the rest of the country? It costs us money to grow cover crop. There are a lot of beneficials, but the producers want to see it now. I planted it yesterday, and I want to see my profits tomorrow. And it doesn’t happen that quickly.”

Dry land farming is farming that uses natural precipitation to water the fields. Nevada farmers must use irrigation to water their crops, which greatly increases the cost of growing a cover crop. There are benefits—for the soil and in the long-term—but most farmers want, and even need, the profit now.

“We grow cover crop [in Nevada],” Mulder said. “It’s called alfalfa or hay. The problem is we mine it. The idea is to put it right back in the soil. … What’s nice in the Midwest is that they have rainfall, so really, the only cost is seed and the equipment and there’s a lot of benefits. In Nevada, we have to turn on the water. We also have a really short growing season, so we can’t really grow two crops. We can do it, like in Fallon, with the corn and then they come in with the rye. I would cut it.”

And that essentially defeats the purpose of the cover crop. So what’s the solution?

“That’s the million dollar question,” Mulder said. “Big pockets. Putting a lot of money out front and not seeing a return for a long time. We’re trying to get that mentality for those guys to think that far ahead. Again, most people want to see profit immediately, and I really don’t blame them.”

Getting farmers into the mindset of conserving their soil and building or keeping it healthy is the idea behind an upcoming workshop Mulder will be speaking at, along with Ben Bowell from Oregon Tilth—a nonprofit organic certification and education organization. Western Nevada College’s Specialty Crop Institute is hosting the workshop titled “Building Healthy Soils” on Sept. 22. The cost is $35 to register. It will also include lunch and a tour of Holley Family Farms in Dayton.

The workshop will discuss Nevada soil health and struggles in depth as well as cover crops in organic systems. Information about financial and technical support available will be included, too. Much of this support comes from NRCS. Ω OPINION

1. Gold Canyon Switch Nevada’s first known newspaper, Johnstown’s Gold Canyon Switch of 1854, was handwritten, one of several handwritten mining camp papers over the years.

2. The Misfits The Misfits is a 1961 drama featuring Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe and is set mostly in Reno. Monroe’s character is recently divorced and even throws her ring into the Truckee River.

3. “Little Motel” by Modest Mouse music video This unconventional music video shot by Reno native Justin Francis with all local actors in 2007 was filmed entirely in Reno. It shows a young boy dying and his mom taking him from the hospital to die in a little motel, but the visuals are played in reverse.

4. “Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash The most famous pop cultural reference to the city of Reno is in Johnny Cash’s lyric, “I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die” in “Folsom Prison Blues,” from his album Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison. The song, appropriately enough, opens up this live album actually recorded in the prison in 1968.

8. KOJ radio On May 1, 1922, Nevada State University in Reno was issued a federal license for the state’s first radio station, with call letters KOJ. It was later revoked without going live.

17. “Take Me Home Tonight” by Eddie Money music video If you look closely, you might notice that the 1986 “Take Me Home Tonight” by Eddie Money music video was shot in the University of Nevada, Reno’s own Lawlor Events Center.

18. “Loser” by Beck “Baby’s in Reno with the Vitamin D/Got a couple of couches/Sleep on the loveseat”: What do these lyrics from Beck’s 1993 song mean? Who knows? Who cares?

19. Shanghai Noon This 2000 Western/Kung Fu mishmash with Jackie Chan, was shot elsewhere, but it’s set in Carson City.

20. One Sound State In 1936, the Nevada State Journal and the First National Bank of Nevada sent out this magazine-format booklet to 10,000 millionaires around the nation.

21. Pink Cadillac The 1989 Clint Eastwood film, Pink Cadillac, is about a woman running from a bounty hunter and a group of white supremacists in her husband’s pink Cadillac. There are several Northern Nevada locations in this film, and she’s finally found in Reno.

22. Reno 911!

About a decade ago, if you were a Renoite traveling anywhere outside the state and you happened to mention where you lived, people would almost always ask, “So, what do people in Reno think about that show Reno 911!?”

(The show aired from 2003 to 2009.) The answer, of course, is that it’s a funny show that has basically nothing to do with the real Reno.

On May 29, 1922, Broili’s Nevada Machinery & Electric was issued a radio station license and call letters KDZK and went on the air July 21 —the state’s first on-air radio station.

In 1986 John Wayne played his last role in The Shootist, about an old gunfighter with terminal cancer who goes to Carson City for his final days.

In September 1954, Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour, which ran on four television networks during its 12 year run, was held in the University of Nevada gymnasium.

Campaign papers and more dating between 1958 and 1990 from Nevada activist, preservationist and legislator Jean Ford are safely stored at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

34. Sister Act Released in 1992, Sister Act is about a lounge singer in Reno who is put into the witness protection program and has to pretend to be a nun in San Francisco to hide from a mob boss.

35. Television and child care In 1947 University of Nevada electrical engineering professor Irving Sandorf told the Reno Kiwanis Club that television could be used for child care.

36. Stained Class by Judas Priest This 1978 Judas Priest album has long been a Northern Nevada favorite. Be sure to crank it up during “Better by You, Better by Me” so that you don’t miss any of the subliminal messages.

37. “Reno” by Bruce Springsteen This song from Bruce Springsteen’s 2005 album Devils & Dust contains the lyrics, “‘200 dollars straight in/250 up the ass,’ she smiled and said/She unbuckled my belt, pulled back her hair/And sat in front of me on the bed.” Yep.

38. The Green Felt Jungle

The Green Felt Jungle, a 1963 national best seller on mobbed-up Nevada, hit way too close to home for Nevada’s promoters, politicians— and mobsters.

39. “New Year’s Eve in Reno” by Hal Swift

Two Nevadan pop culture symbols intersected: Former Miss Nevada Dawn Wells made the first of two appearances on Bonanza in “The Way Station,” Oct. 29, 1962.

“I’m settin’ in the station in Reno, Nevada,” muses poet Hal Swift in this poem, “waitin’ for m’bus t’come in.”

Walter Van Tilburg Clark’s first novel, The Ox Bow Incident, was published in 1940, the first of the Nevadan’s three novels, now considered a classic. A movie version was made three years later, and it was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.

41. Friday Night This 2011 remake of an ’80s vampire flick is largely unnecessary, but it sinks its teeth in the old idea that the suburbs of Las Vegas are the perfect place for the soulless living dead.

42. Twins The “Which twin has the Toni?” advertising campaign for home permanent kits began in 1950 with Nevada’s Eleanor and Jeanne Fulstone as the first set of twins.

43. “Reno, Nevada” by Fairport Convention Folkie Richard Farina, best known for being married to Joan Baez’s sister, wrote this song, but the definitive version from 1968 is by the great English folk-rock band Fairport Convention, feauturing some amazing, virtuosic but tasteful guitar playing by Richard Thompson.

44. Microwave stations In Aug. 1951 a string of nine microwave stations across Nevada began carrying telephone calls, and started carrying television signals in September.

45. The Hangover After all the sequels and rip-offs, it’s easy to forget what a comedic revelation this movie was in 2009. And great fucking branding and promotion or whatever for the state’s biggest tourist trap.

46. The Professionals

The Professionals (1966) is one of a dozen movies made in Nevada’s Valley of Fire, and the one that makes the best use of the scenery.

This book by Will James—a real Washoe Valley cowboy—has stayed in print since 1926 and been made into several movies.

This 1970 Grateful Dead tune is one of the many songs that characterize Reno as a destination for sketchy, drugged-out, crazy people.

“Reno,” a 1993 ditty, thoroughly covers gambling, whiskey, romantic despair and other country staples.

57. “Wrong Side of the Road” by Tom Waits Tom Waits, the great, iconoclastic songwriter, has several songs that mention Reno—including this one from his 1978 album Blue Valentines, which mentions “Spendin’ someone else’s dough/And we’ll drive all the way to Reno/On the wrong side of the road.”

Local professionals in the design and creative community are invited to attend DICE 2014, a multi-disciplinary design conference in northern Nevada demonstrating that great design empowers individuals, inspires the masses, and enriches entire communities.

This year, DICE 2014 will dive into the intricacies of the idea of “craft”: its history, misconceptions and future in the world of design.

96. Strangers by Dean Koontz The characters in this 2002 horror novel are all brought to the Tranquility Motel in the Nevada desert outside of Elko to figure out what was done to them and why.

97. Winnemucca by Willy Vlautin Before he was known as a movie-inspiring novelist, native son Willy Vlautin was known as the leader of the Uncle Tupelo-influenced alt-country band Richmond Fontaine. The group has released 10 studio albums, all littered with Nevada references, but this 2002 record has the most undeniably Nevadan title.

98. “The Sorry State of Nevada”

The March 18, 1955, issue of Collier’s magazine inquired into “The Sorry State of Nevada,” describing many problems which remain unchanged today.

99. Fallout: New Vegas Few places seem to invite being recast as a radioactive post-apocalyptic wasteland quite as readily as Las Vegas. There aren’t quite as many mutants in the 2010 video game as actually live there now.

100. Sagebrushed: Coming of Age and Working in Nevada edited by Alan Deutschman This book is a collection of 12 personal essays by students of the University of Nevada, Reno’s Reynolds School of Journalism about growing up in the Silver State.

101. Magnolia This 1999 film takes place mainly in the San Fernando Valley, but the opening casino scene was shot in Reno. It revolves around interrelated characters and their quest for love and meaning.

102. The Cooler This 2003 romantic drama is set in a fictional Las Vegas casino called the Shangri-La, but the film was actually shot in the Golden Phoenix Reno—now the Montage—and used employees from the casino in the movie.

103. West of Carson City Boomtown lawlessness sets the tone in this 1940 Western starring Johnny Mack Brown.

104. Girlchild by Tupelo Hassman Tupelo Hassman’s first novel, published in 2013, is about a young girl who comes from a line of “biblically fertile” women living in the Calle—a trailer park in Reno—and is determined to break the chain.

In 1918 Lightnin’, a play about a divorce hotel straddling the Nevada/California line at Lake Tahoe, began playing on Broadway, lasting three seasons and 1,291 performances.

War Elephant, Deer Tick’s 2007 debut album, is a solid slab of alt-rock country, and a song that references our state in the title is one of the best on the album. But the band’s live show, as evidenced by their appearance at the Knitting Factory a few weeks ago, sure is a mess.

You’re doing well if you remember this 2002

124. Bad Move Space Cadet by Zoinks!

The 1995 record from the long defunct Reno band Zoinks! is probably the best-ever pop punk album to prominently feature the words “Ryland Street.” It’s wild that it’s almost 20 years old.

125. “Reno” by B. Raffetto “This is the place, and ‘X’ marks the spot, where lawyers untangle the marital knot.” Thus begins a romantic, undated poem written for a Reno postcard.

126. The Aviator A storied 1920s airmail route between Elko and Pasco was remembered in the 1985 Rosanna Arquette/Christopher Reeve movie The Aviator.

127. Trafficked No More documentary This is an emotional documentary about sex trafficking in Nevada that originally aired on every television station in the state on Jan. 22.

131. Live in Las Vegas Besides Memphis, Tennessee, and Tupelo, Mississippi, no city can claim more ownership of Elvis Presley than Las Vegas. This 2001 CD box set documents live performances in Vegas from throughout Elvis’ career, 1956 to 1975.

132. “Send the Pain Below” by Chevelle music video The 2003 song “Send the Pain Below” by Chevelle revolves around a snowboarder and his struggles. It features shots of Reno including the famous arch.

133. Godzilla In the 2014 Godzilla film, there are three big, scary monster things. One is Godzilla, and the other two are called MUTOs—mutant unidentified terrestrial organisms. One of the MUTOs emerges from a Nevada nuclear waste facility and then goes on to destroy the Vegas Strip before a showdown with the other MUTO against Godzilla in San Francisco.

144. Battle Born by The Killers Somehow, mediocre Vegas wuss rock band The Killers has become the biggest rock band to ever come out of Nevada. The group’s 2012 album title references the state motto, and it sucks.

139. “Road, Nevada Desert” by Ansel Adams This 1960 Ansel Adams photograph is steeped in quiet emptiness.

The soundtrack was a huge part of the film’s production, and Ramirez and Sutherland hope to make the soundtrack available as part of the movie distribution. Music acts from Nevada were approached to make the music, so the soundtrack features bands like Weapons of Mass Creation, Merkin and the Schizopolitans.

To make something so locally inspired receive accolades from other filmmakers is “validating and awesome,” Sutherland said. “The movie shows a contrast of Reno having little to offer.”

But there’s plenty for locals, too. “If you’re from Reno, there are a bunch of Easter eggs,” said Ramirez, many of which might take multiple viewings to notice.

Because of the positive response to the movie, Ramirez and Sutherland anticipate more national and global exposure for Reno’s film scene.

“We know the talent is here,” Sutherland says. “We want others to know it’s here.” Ω

Nowhere Nevada Winning an award as a first-time filmmaker is rare.

Winning several across the country is by hard to fathom, according to Brian L. Ashley Sutherland, producer of Nowhere Nevada.

Hennefer As the name might imply, Nowhere Nevada is a Nevada-made film, and it’s been more than three years in the making.

Recently, it won the top award—Best Feature Film—at the San Francisco Global Movie Fest, and has been accepted in other festivals around the country.

Several years later, Ramirez and his friends decided to make the film a reality. The name of the production studio, Marianarchy Productions, is an homage to Psota.

“Mary would have been amazed at the response we’ve gotten,” said Ramirez.

Making the film was a healing process for Psota’s loved ones, says Sutherland.

Nowhere Nevada is a feature-length film that takes place in the state, and offers no shortage of drug use, sex and crime. A trailer can be viewed on the website. When the film was shown at the San Francisco festival, it was paired with a short film, which just happened to be about the negative impact of drugs.

But Sutherland insists that Nowhere Nevada isn’t endorsing reckless drug use.

“It’s about choices, and how drugs affect those choices,” he said. Regardless, he says, it’s also a “fun, rock and roll drug movie.”

In another film festival, Nowhere Nevada was placed in the “Crime Films” category.

“We’d never thought of the movie in those terms,” Sutherland said.

The film has a very “Reno vibe,” says Sutherland. When asked what that means, “It’s a little bit dirty,” Ramirez said. “We’re not plastic.”

“Reno is gritty and real,” Sutherland agreed. “You have to take the good with the bad here.” He brings up the lack of competition among Nevada artists. “We’re not in this big pressure cooker. We don’t do

The film is full of the quintessential Nevada imagery—featuring casinos, open roads and mysterious figures with ulterior motives. This perspective on Reno has drawn a global audience for the movie.

After receiving the award in San Francisco, Sutherland said viewers were fascinated by Reno’s culture, and he was approached by Indian filmmakers who want to distribute the film. Finding a distributor that helps get the movie to the right channels is the goal, Sutherland says, and he has several possible deals in the works.

“Where it goes next is extremely important,” he says, acknowledging the efforts of the cast and crew, which consisted of more than 97 people.

Established in a Reno strip mall circa 1997, the family-owned quasi-Italian restaurant is fondly known for good food and an eclectic collection of kitschy decorations. I’m not entirely certain whether the goal was more room for customers or knickknacks, but the 2011 move to a new two-level building on South Virginia provides plenty of space for both.

I say “quasi-Italian” because the recently-retooled menu is a mashup of pasta dishes, pizzas, steak and chicken entrees, burgers and sandwiches, salads and bar munchies. A great place for newcomers to start is the fresh, house-made ravioli of the day ($11.95-$13.95).

Shortly after our group was seated, a basket of deliciously warm bread arrived with a bottle of 2011 Bell’Agio Chianti I’d selected from the wine wall ($11.99). The selection is pretty impressive, and the prices more so compared to the mark-up usually added to wine in a restaurant setting.

Bottles are available for sale to take home or enjoy in-house, with pricing on par with the best retail shops in town (including big box stores known for great deals on wine). Affordability shouldn’t be the sole motivation to enjoy wine with your meal, but it certainly helps.

For starters we ordered grilled polenta ($10.95) and deep fried calamari steak strips ($11.95).

The humble texture and flavor of

cornmeal combined quite well with melted mozzarella cheese, sauteed mushrooms and house-made marinara sauce. The menu says it comes with blue cheese, but I couldn’t detect any in the dish and didn’t really mind. We scarfed it right up.

The battered calamari was served with marinara and lemon wedges, but was a bit chewy compared to similar examples. Chewy squid usually indicates either being left in hot oil for more than a couple of minutes, or perhaps having sat on the plate too long prior to serving. It wasn’t bad, but left some room for improvement.

My daughter and I each ordered a cup of clam chowder ($3.95) which was full of chopped clam, potato, onion, carrot, and a slightly spicy, herbal-seasoned broth reminiscent of chowder served on Martha’s Vineyard. Definitely above average, not the usual flour-thickened fare, and my hard-to-please daughter finished her entire serving.

My wife ordered the big ass salad ($8.95) with the grilled chicken option ($3.25). Tossed in a tangy house vinaigrette and loaded with greens and goodies, they aren’t kidding about the size. My daughter and I each got a taste, and you could easily split this salad between two people.

The meats on both specials sampled were outstanding, including the 16oz prime rib ($21.95) and pork loin ($16.95), both applewood-smoked to perfection. The loin was lightly drizzled in a “drunken bourbon sauce,” served with a surprisingly spicy, truly tasty capellini primavera (steamed garden veggies with long, thin pasta tossed in a tomato basil sauce). The menu indicates scalloped cheese potatoes, but the prime was served with steamed veggies and mashed potatoes with brown gravy. Nothing wrong with that, but compared to the fantastically medium-rare, smoke and beef delivery system on the plate, the sides felt like stand-ins for something lost in translation.

With wine still left to finish, we capped the meal with a shared brownie sundae ($8.95), featuring vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, rum sauce and chocolate syrup topping a molten-hot, plate-sized chocolate fudge brownie. The dry chianti paired perfectly with the gooey, creamy, chocolatey chaos, and both were cleaned up in short order. Ω

The Drop features the final film performance of James Gandolfini, and it’s a beauty. Luckily for the viewer, it’s not even the best thing about the movie. That would be the central performance delivered by Tom Hardy as Bob, a seemingly meek bartender of questionable intelligence who works for Cousin Marv (Gandolfini).

Hardy disappears into this role, and will have by you in awe that this is actually the guy who Bob Grimm played Bane in The Dark Night Rises. He is one versatile actor. b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m The bar that Cousin Marv and Bob occupy is a drop bar, where many of the gambling winnings in a seedier part of Brooklyn wind up in a safe. One night, the bar is held up, and Cousin Marv has to hand over five grand. This puts Marv in debt to scary Chechen mobsters, now proprietors of the bar Marv once owned.

Bob and Marv must devise a plan to pay the mobsters back, and when they do, they find themselves in an even deeper dilemma. Their drop bar is to be the money spot for Super Bowl Sunday. That makes it a prime candidate for another robbery.

In the meantime, Bob finds a bloody pit bull puppy in a neighbor’s garbage can. That unknowing neighbor is Nadia (the wonderful Noomi Rapace), who befriends Bob and helps him with the dog. It turns out that the dog was intentionally put in the garbage by Nadia’s ex-boyfriend Eric Deeds (Matthias Schoenaerts), a creep who brags about having killed somebody, and starts using the dog for blackmail.

The bar and dog plotlines eventually converge for a finale that’s both tense and completely shocking. The Drop is a slow burn for sure, but when things come to a head it explodes with surprising power.

Gandolfini’s Marv owes plenty to his Tony Soprano. The character, once a big man in the neighborhood, has lost power to another entity, and it’s screwing with his pride. Marv looks like Tony after a decade has passed, and he no longer cares about appearances. He comes off like Tony after his power has been taken away, and his wife has abandoned him. The screenplay even gives him a nagging sister and a father in a rest home.

Gandolfini plays the role as if it will remind us of Tony, with many of the same mannerisms. Much of what Gandolfini did since The Sopranos (including his wonderful turn in last year’s Enough Said) seemed to try to make us forget that legendary character, but Marv definitely possesses Soprano traits. It’s a great performance and one that makes the loss of Gandolfini all the more painful. It’s a little tough to watch the movie knowing it is the last time we will see something new from him, but it’s also a blessing in that it’s very good.

Disappearing behind some bad sweaters, flat hair and a Brooklyn accent, Hardy delivers a character that’s always sympathetic, even when he reveals himself to be a bit more complicated than he first seems. It’s just another great performance in what is starting to become a rather impressive list of achievements that includes The Dark Knight Rises, Inception and Warrior. If you pay attention to the internet, you probably know Hardy is Mel Gibson’s replacement in next year’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

The supporting cast is a powerful one. In addition to Rapace and Schoenaerts, there’s John Ortiz as a nosy detective who sees Bob every week at mass and questions him frankly about his refusal to take communion. Michael Aronov is appropriately spooky as Chovka, the man who wants his money.

The Drop was directed by Michael R. Roskam (Bullhead) and scripted by Dennis Lehane, the man who penned other similarly dark neighborhood crime stories with novels Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone. Lehane also wrote Shutter Island, further proof that the man knows how to tell a great story.

I will say the ending of The Drop seemed to be tacked on and a little happier than it should’ve been. That’s a small quibble for a movie that contains a last, great dose of Gandolfini and a remarkable Hardy. Ω

A couple of 30-something buddies (Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans, Jr.), bored with their humdrum lives, dress up as cops for a masquerade party and discover that things are pretty cool when people think you are the law.

Pierce Brosnan stars as Devereaux, a former CIA guy who winds up in places like Russia shooting people like nobody’s business and getting himself mixed up in their politics. For starters, there’s no way any American would get away with the crazy crap this guy does in this film. He’d get squashed like a bug the second he stepped out of his hotel room. The film is rife with spy movie clichés.

Devereaux has a wife and child who create “complications,” he has a former trainee he shepherded (Luke Bracey) on his trail, along with a couple of CIA heads of questionable character (Will Patton and Bill Smitrovich) messing with him. Yes, there is also the mysterious damsel in distress (Olga Kurylenko) who Devereaux must protect while dealing with his own serious drinking problem. It’s your basic “who’s the real bad guy?” film, with everybody doing something relatively nasty at one time or another to keep things confusing. Brosnan’s character offs a lot of people, and even cuts an innocent woman’s femoral artery to make a dramatic point. It’s all nonsense, directed poorly by Roger Donaldson, who also directed Brosnan in the junky Dante’s Peak.

The One I Love

A husband and wife (Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss) struggling in their relationship visit a retreat on the advice of their therapist (Ted Danson), and they make a startling discovery in one of the guest houses. That discovery results in something that is beautifully clever in addressing the problems that plague many relationships, while also playing like a really cool Twilight Zone episode. The big twist results in one of the better romantic comedies in years, one with a big brain and strong insight. Calling this a romantic comedy is almost an insult, but it has romance and it is funny, so I suppose it falls into that particular genre. I do think it’s a movie that many therapists will hate, because it could save some couples a bunch of money. It’s an eye-opener, for sure. Duplass is making a name for himself as an understated, offbeat romantic comedy lead. He’s actually the star of another of the more recent great romantic comedies, Safety Not Guaranteed. Moss, star of TV’s Mad Men, has a movie career spanning over two decades, but The One I Love makes it feel like she’s just arriving. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Legions of Michael Bay haters have been jumping all over this Turtles reboot before it even hit the screen. It’s actually not a Michael Bay film; he only served as producer on this one.

Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans, Battle Los Angeles) is the director here, and he’s put something together that is far more coherent than the latest Bay-helmed Transformers movie.

This is not to say that the movie is any good, because it actually isn’t, but it is markedly better than most of Bay’s output. Megan Fox plays April, a wannabe reporter who stumbles upon a vigilante force protecting Manhattan from an evil terrorist group. The vigilantes turn out to be the infamous turtles. The turtles, the result of scientific experiments, were raised in the sewers by a rat, and now they are ready to rise above the street surface and kick some ass. The film has some good moments, and the turtles eat some pizza and get some laughs. Fox is a bit of a bore in the central human role, Will Arnett is virtually wasted as her cameraman, and I’m sick and tired of William Fichtner playing bad guys.

The special effects are OK, but the story offers nothing special. A sequel is already being prepared. A director with a better sense of wonder and humor could do the franchise well.

This is one of those faith-based movies like God’s Not Dead, Heaven is For Real, and Jesus Loved Jellybeans. It’s a take on that whole “What if Elvis’s twin brother, the one born stillborn a half hour before his arrival, had survived?” It replaces Elvis and Jesse Presley with the fictional Ryan Wade and Drexel Hemsley, both played by real-life Elvis impersonator and heinously terrible actor, Blake Rayne. Obviously, getting the rights to Elvis music would cost more than three new Cadillacs, so the producers of this dreck wrote some crap Elvis copycat music and a shameless script that stars Elvis without really starring Elvis. I would encourage the likes of Lisa Marie Presley to sue the makers of this movie for obviously stealing her dad’s likeness, but then she would have to actually see this movie, and I wouldn’t wish that fate on anyone.

Somehow, this aberration attracted the likes of Ray Liotta, Ashley Judd, Seth Green and Joe Pantoliano to star in it. I watched this movie in complete disbelief, totally aghast, mouth agape, and laughing out loud at its wretchedness while sitting in a completely empty movie theater. The music, with such wannabe hits as “Boogie Woogie Rock and Roll” and “Sunrise Surfin’” is inexcusably awful, and the “Jesus Loves You” undertones are the equivalent of somebody walking up and smashing you in the face with a Bible and then shoving its pages down your throat while you are lying on the ground unconscious and bleeding.

Everybody’s equal, there is no war, all aspects of life are predestined. Lois Lowry’s novel had an interesting premise, but Phillip Noyce’s film simply feels and looks wrong. For starters, it comes off as a rip-off of Pleasantville, with the film slowly changing from black and white to color, while elements of the dystopian society come off like a dated Disney ride. As for the casting, it’s good to see the likes of Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep on hand in pivotal roles, but the young leads (Brenton Thwaites and Odeya Rush) seem like they are overreaching. Taylor Swift shows up for a couple of minutes in a cameo, a cameo that is being marketed as a starring role and is mighty misleading for her fan base. Bridges is at least interesting as an old wise man storing all memories of past societies in his head. He’s tasked with passing his memories on to young Jonas (Thwaites), as if that isn’t going to cause some sort of problem. Noyce gives us some pretty pictures and a halfway decent cast, and basically doesn’t know what to do with it.

Call this one The Empire Strikes Back of Dolphin Tale movies, in that it is slightly better than the original (not much— just slightly) and it has Tauntauns (actually, that’s not true). The likes of Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr. rejoin annoying child actors Nathan Gamble and Cozi Zuehlsdorff (yes, the Cozi Zuehlsdorff) for another round of gooey sentimentality involving dolphins. This time out, and probably due to all of those current issues involving whales and dolphins in captivity, the story spends a lot of time on rehabbing and releasing animals rather than confining them for human amusement. In addition to Winter, the dolphin with the prosthetic tail, there’s a pretty awesome sea turtle and a kooky pelican that kids will love. The movie kind of works as educational fare, but when it drifts away from the aquarium tanks it’s a real hell ride.

It must be said that Harry Connick Jr. can’t act for beans, Ashley Judd’s career has really hit the skids, and Morgan Freeman just has no business being within a million miles of this film. Gamble and Zuehlsdorff (yes, the Cozi Zuehlsdorff) are, I’m sure, a couple of exquisite human beings, but watching them in a movie is an annoying, tedious task. I love the dolphins and aquatic life in this film. It’s the humans who drive me crazy.

So they take the masquerade beyond the party and start chasing criminals and busting perps.

Wayans, Jr., is the spitting image of his dad in every way, and it feels like this is a movie starring his dad after he’s time traveled from the past into the present for the shoot. Johnson, who has been making a name for himself in smart indie comedies (Safety Not Guaranteed, Drinking Buddies) tries to go big time with this vehicle, and fails miserably. The premise is insulting—not to mention a little dangerous—and it’s delivered with stale humor and bad performances all around. Director and co-writer Luke Greenfield (The Girl Next Door) has a made a movie more ugly than funny, and makes Johnson and Wayans, Jr., two funny guys, look like amateurs.

A rock band that eats fresh muffins at practice: Carla Baptista, Rick Charles and Carolyn Gates are Betty Rocker.

The band that Gates and Baptista started together is called Betty Rocker, which they half-jokingly describe as Betty Crocker meets Black Sabbath.

Gates sings—with a melodic but occasionally sneering voice—and plays the bass. Baptista plays guitar, with a crunchy, fuzzy, grungy tone, swinging and punching with classic rock power chords. And drummer Rick Charles ties the sound together with solid, unwavering backbeat.

The lineup came together in 2012. Gates and Baptista had been writing songs together and jamming with a different drummer, but when it came time to start playing shows, they recruited Charles.

“It made every single song we’d ever played sound giant and awesome,” said Gates, of the first time they played with Charles. “It gave us a big fat train to ride for our magical four-chord combinations.”

The band is based out of Carson City. Gates played drums in the great rock band Blunderbusst, but, other than that, no one else in the band had previous experience playing in performing ensembles.

Charles learned to play along to records and Baptista had to overcome some shyness.

“The first time I said, ‘Would you like to play some rock ‘n’ roll?,’ she said, as she backed away, crossing her arms in front of herself, ‘oh, I could never play in front of another person,’” said Gates.

And for Gates, it was her first time stepping out from behind a drum kit to both play an instrument and sing.

The women in the band split songwriting duties about 50-50.

Gates does the majority of the singing, even of Baptista’s lyrics, although Baptista herself has a great rock ‘n’ roll singing voice that pops up occasionally in concert and on the band’s full-length CD album, titled Couldn’t Look Away. Charles has the classic drummer attitude—he just wants to rock and lets his band mates worry about the frivolous stuff, like song lyrics and the name of the band.

The two songwriters have very different approaches. Gates writes with a focus on storytelling and wordplay, whereas Baptista focuses on guitar riffs and shorter melodic phrases.

“Carla writes really great riffs, and because she’s not a veteran guitar player, there’s no inhibition about writing a three chord riff,” said Gates.

“When we bring a new idea together and the three of us are working on it … we each bring a different idea of what this rock sound should sound like,” said Baptista. “My observation is that each of us were born in a different decade, so each of us came to age listening to different ideas of rock.

It just colors you, no matter how many years later it is. It just comes out. ... But when we’re playing together and having a good practice or a good show, it’s weird, the age and the gender just disappear. But it does make a difference.”

The results are swaggering, heavy rock that draws from different influences, but seems to find a happy center around an early ‘90s alternative tone. The music often feels aggressive.

“I think anger sort of personifies the genre we like to play,” said Gates. “It captures the tone, the guitar tone and the tempos we like.

It’s quite angry. But we’re not angry people. We’re all quite pleasant.

We hardly ever swear and rarely imbibe.”

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Performing Arts Series kicks off its 2014-2015 season with a performance by the a cappella group comprised of five female vocalists. The Grammynominated collective is rooted in African-American history and culture and celebrates the inspirations of a variety of genres, including spirituals, blues, folk, gospel, jazz, popular and world music. They also accommodate hearing-impaired audience members with a sign language interpreter during their performances.

Doody bound You printed a letter from a guy who doesn’t want to be a father and wanted to know how to be sure his girlfriend is on birth control. You said, “The single worst form of birth control is trusting that a woman … longing for a baby” is taking hers (with whether she’s ethical being a “mitigating factor”). But you forgot to tell him the magic word—abstinence! In addition to preventing pregnancy, it also guarantees that you won’t get STDs or suffer the physically or psychologically damaging effects of premarital sex. Also, where’d you get the idea that women are conniving to get a bun in the oven without informing their partner? Right, we’re all babyhungry, unethical hopeful breeders.

I like to offer “Don’t have sex!” as a form of practical advice—usually just as I’m getting into my flying car.

Yes, abstaining from sex will eliminate the possibility of producing offspring, getting STDs, or breaking a leg after somebody cheaps out on the home dungeon installation. But there’s a reason they call it a sex drive, not a sex parked in the garage. Also, the advice “Just don’t have sex!” is especially impractical for guys in their hornitoadinous early 20s, like the author of that letter.

As for where I got the idea about (some) women “conniving to get a bun in the oven without informing their partner,” well, in email I’ve received from dismayed men paying child support to these women and from research by therapist Dr. Melinda Spohn.

pregnancy—surreptitiously going without birth control or sporadically using it when they had sex with men with desirable qualities.

horoscopes I write for you aren’t primarily meant to predict the future. They are more about uncovering hidden potentials and desirable possibilities that are stirring below the surface right now. When I’m doing my job well, I help you identify those seeds so you can cultivate them proactively. Bearing that in mind, I’ll pose three pertinent questions: 1. What experiments might stir up more intimacy in the relationships you want to deepen? 2. What could you change about yourself to attract more of the love and care you want? 3. Is there anything you can do to diminish the sting of bad memories about past romantic encounters, thereby freeing you to love with more abandon?

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The old

Latin motto Gradu diverso, una via can be translated as either “Continuing on the same road, but with a different stride” or “Going the same way, but changing your pace.” I think this is excellent advice for you, Taurus. By my reckoning, you are on the correct path. You are headed in the right direction. But you need to shift your approach a bit—not a lot, just a little. You’ve got to make some minor adjustments in the way you flow.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): For years,

Donna and George Lewis used a 33-pound, oval-shaped rock as a doorstop in their Tennessee home. Later they moved it to their garden. England Journal of Medicine published a study with a conclusion we might expect to see in a tabloid newspaper or satirical website. It reported that there is a correlation between chocolate consumption and Nobel Prizes. Those countries whose citizens eat more chocolate have also produced an inordinate number of Nobel laureates. So does this mean that chocolate makes you smarter, as some other studies have also suggested? Maybe, the report concluded.

Since it is especially important for you to be at the height of your mental powers in the coming weeks, Leo, why not experiment with this possibility?

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): I rarely waste

my time trying to convert the “skeptics” who attack astrology with a hostile zeal that belies their supposed scientific objectivity.

They’re often as dogmatic and closedminded as any fundamentalist religious nut.

When I’m in a tricky mood, though, I might tell them about the Crawford Perspectives, a highly rated Wall Street investment publication that relies extensively on astrological analysis. Or I might quote the wealthy financier J. P. Morgan, who testified that, “Millionaires don’t use astrology; billionaires do.” That brings us to my main point, Virgo: The astrological omens suggest that the coming weeks will be a favorable time for you to put in motion plans to get richer quicker. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): When Libra-

born Mohandas Gandhi was 19, he moved to London from his native India to study law. Soon he got caught up in the effort to become an English gentleman. He took elocution lessons and learned to dance. He bought fine clothes and a gold watch-chain.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You are entering a phase when you will reap rich rewards by nurturing the health of your favorite posse, ensemble or organization. How is the group’s collective mental health? Are there any festering rifts? Any apathetic attitudes or weakening resolves? I choose you to be the leader who builds solidarity and cultivates consensus. I ask you to think creatively about how to make sure everyone’s individual goals synergize with the greater good. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The

good news is that America has more trees than it did 100 years ago. Aggressive efforts to replace the decimated old-growth forests have paid off. The bad news is that the new forests have a far less diverse selection of tree species than the originals. The fresh batches are often crowded into smaller spaces, so wildfires are more massive and devastating. And because so many of the forests are young, they host a reduced diversity of plant and animal life. All in all, the increased quantity is wonderful; the lower quality not so wonderful. Is there a lesson here for you? I think so. In your upcoming decisions, favor established quality over novel quantity.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): If Pope

Francis isn’t traveling, he comes out to meet the public in St. Peter’s Square every Wednesday. During one such event last January, he took a few moments to bestow tender attention on a talking parrot that belonged to a male stripper. I foresee a comparable anomaly happening for you in the coming days. A part of you that is wild or outré will be blessed by contact with what’s holy or sublime. Or maybe a beastly aspect of your nature that doesn’t normally get much respect will receive a divine favor.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “My defini-

tion of a devil is a god who has not been recognized,” said mythologist Joseph Campbell. “It is a power in you to which you have not given expression, and you push it back. And then, like all repressed energy, it builds up and becomes dangerous to the position you’re trying to hold.” Do you agree, Pisces? Zine it all Ron Rash Mixed Message is the name of a new zine and small press bookstore within the Never Ender Boutique and Gallery, 119 Thoma St. The proprietor of Mixed Message is Ron Rash, a popular painter and tattoo artist who works out of Aces Tattoo, 681 S. Tell me about Mixed Message.

Well, basically it’s a little zine and small press book shop. There’s also art and prints and things like that. That’s one of the future goals of it. It’s an idea I’ve had for a long time to have a little place to sell people’s zines and small press books and things like that. It’s something Reno doesn’t have, and I always seek out when I go to bigger cities, so I thought why not do something like that here?

What are some of the books and zines you carry?

Right now we’ve got some stuff from local people, handmade photo zines, zines about feminism. We’ve got stuff from out-of-state, handmade books, basically, about whatever the person is into that’s making it—art, anarchy, politics, cats. That’s the thing about zines—you can make one about anything. If you have some sort of passion or information that you want to share with somebody, then that’s the power of a zine. You can just put it together, and it can be crappy or it can be super well put together. It doesn’t

matter. It can be $1 or it can be $20. It’s really just about sharing information and ideas or sharing your heart or sharing your photographs or sharing found stuff. There’s just no limit of what a zine can be.

Beheadings. Beatings. Murders.

Hassles. Friction. Ever broiling, ever toiling, it’s a ball of confusion. Which gives me all the excuse I need to lay down, close my eyes, and go escapist, back to that enchanted afternoon in the perfect blue water of the Caribbean Sea, just off Ambergris Caye, the playground of Belize.

There were six of us on this snorkeling tour, and we had parked in an area known for its sharks and rays. We were in the water, which was all of maybe five feet deep. The bottom was covered with grass, and in the grass, hundreds and hundreds of living conchs. The Conch Garden.

Pretty neat. Captain Chuck told us to just hang around the boat, because he was going to load the chum bucket and throw it out there. He promised that things would get interesting soon after.

In two minutes, three nurse sharks showed up to have a look.

Better than ever. I’m always busy.

Any other art projects?

Off the top of my head, of course we have Denali [Lowder]. … She caught wind that I was doing this and just said, hey, let me be involved. It was really perfect because not only does she make stuff that’s incredible, but she’s also very connected with that whole genre. I’m definitely not as young as I used to be, and I’m not out at shows, and I’m not out at a lot things where you meet people who are making this stuff, so she’s got a great network already established and knows a lot of people. So it was a no-brainer to say, hell yeah, come help me out. And she’s been doing great.

I’m getting back into painting. Painting is something I’ve been doing for the last 25 years or so, and it took a back burner to tattooing the last six years. I’ve been doing nothing but tattooing. But I had a desire to get back into painting, and that’s what I’ve been doing. I have a piece in a group show at the Holland Project [All In on Sept. 19].

And I’m working on some other paintings that I hope to get some prints together and start selling some prints online as well as in Mixed Message. That’s the other part of the Mixed Message concept—to have it as a press publication type thing, not only for myself to get prints and stuff made and sold through that outlet, but also do it for other people, like Denali, doing collaborative things and selling it through the Mixed Message brand. Ω

Voices from the Past

The Virginia City Cemetery comes alive with the 19th century Comstock residents. They share their stories, lives, and deaths. The performance will last 90 minutes as you walk through the cemetery with the widow of Silver Terrace as your guide.

They are also completely cool with people, and we could swim near them without fear, which was nice. It was dramatic and fascinating watching them go after the free food in the bucket, unbothered and unfazed by our presence.

And then, coming in from the open ocean was a creature who was a bit more charismatic. He casually approached the group, also interested in the prospect of free food. There was no mistaking this guy. Three feet long, about as thick around as my forearm, gleaming in his silver sheen and showing off his telltale teeth, protruding visibly from his pugnacious lower jaw. Well, looky here, now joining our little gang was none other than a big ole barracuda.

Captain Chuck said it was fine, no problem, 'cudas are cool, just don’t do anything stupid. Check. Got it.

What was extraordinary about this fish was how close he got to us. At

Yeah, in Never Ender. That’s kind of what sparked it. I’ve had this idea for a long time, but I’m busy. I work a lot—doing tattoos and doing art. So it’s not something that I was just able to come out and start. But this space became available in the Never Ender and Melanie [Crane, owner of Never Ender] approached me and said, “Hey, do you have any use for this space?” and I thought immediately, yeah, I do. It’s just a perfect fit.

I don’t have to be there every day. I can still do my day job. … All of the zines and books can get rung out through the front register at Never Ender. It’s great, just like a little side project. It’s fun to go out and research new zines and books to bring in.

one point, he just kinda casually swam in between me and another snorkeler, cruising in front of my face at a distance of no more than two feet. Way cool. And very, uh, well, very charismatic. I sure as hell wasn’t watching the damn sharks anymore. And I had very little urge to reach out and pet him, which I assumed would be a move that would definitely qualify as “stupid.”

Mr. Cuda was a gorgeous, impressive sonuvagun, and he hung with us for a half hour, lurking on the outer fringe of us snorkelers, occasionally swimming among us, on the prowl for some scraps, and adding a bit of thrilling, low level menace to the scene. Just by being there, he livened things up. And god bless him, he minded his manners, as did all of us highly respectful humanoids.

And then the damn phone rang ... Ω
