Nevada HumaNe Society ’ S duck Race & FeStival

Twenty-thousand rubber ducks will race down the Truckee River during the annual race and fundraiser for Nevada Humane Society. Visitors can adopt a rubber duck for $5 and help homeless pets. The fastest rubber ducks will win prizes, including a cash jackpot, travel packages or a new car. Even if you don’t adopt a duck, you’re still welcome to watch the race and enjoy live music, carnival attractions, food and more from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, at Wingfield Park, First Street and Arlington Avenue, in downtown Reno. BeSt iN tHe WeSt Nugget RiB cook-oFF

The scent of barbecued flesh will waft across downtown Sparks during the 26th annual rib cookoff presented by the Nugget. More than 500,000 people are expected to visit during the six-day event, which begins on Wednesday, Aug. 27, and ends on Monday, Sept. 1. In addition to ribs and food booths, other highlights include the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off World Rib Eating Championship on Aug. 27 and headlining musical acts, including LIT on Aug. 27, Eric Hutchinson on Friday, Aug. 28, Joan Osborne on Friday, Aug. 29, Joe Diffie on Saturday, Aug. 30, Jefferson Starship on Sunday, Aug. 31, and Robert Randolph & The Family Band on Monday, Sept. 1. There will also be continuous live entertainment, arts and crafts vendors and a kids’ area during the festival. Gates are open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m Wednesday through Sunday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 1. Admission is free. Call 356-3300 or visit www.nuggetribcookoff.com.

miSS giNgeR deviNe uNdReSSed: a oNe Weave SHoW

Miss Ginger Devine, who was again voted “Reno’s Best Drag Queen” by RN&R readers in this year’s Biggest Little Best of Northern Nevada poll, shares stories and insights from her 10-year career and how the fine art of drag “queenery” has shaped and altered the course of her life. Her one-person show includes anecdotes, musical numbers and a costume change. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, at Good Luck Macbeth Theatre Company, 713 S. Virginia St. Other performances begin at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 23, 28-31 and Sept. 5-6. The show contains strong language and adult themes. ReNo-taHoe gReek FeStival

The 27th annual festival features Greek food and spirits, pastries and coffee, authentic Greek music and dancing, imports from Greece, a silent auction, raffle and kids’ entertainment. Advance tickets are $12 and include $10 worth of food. Admission is $5 at the gate but does not include food. The festival takes place from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, at St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Church, 4795 Lakeside Drive. Will you be one of more than 65,000 burners participating in the annual gathering in the Black Rock Desert? If yes, you already know that the gates open on Monday, Aug. 25. Visitors from around the world will help create a small city in the desert and witness people from all walks of life find (or lose) themselves as they’re immersed in art, music, nature, community and spirituality. The party on the playa reaches fever pitch on Saturday, Aug. 30, when the wooden structure of the Man is consumed in flames, but the memories linger long past the conclusion of the event on Monday, Sept. 1, when thousands of vehicles will make up a mass exodus from Gerlach to Reno and parts beyond.
