Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Well, hell. Why do I always get to be the guy with the weird medical crap?

Lounging around the house Sunday, I noticed my left eye was dry—not that unusual, particularly during wildfire season.

As I added Systane, my favorite artificial tears, I noticed some things weren’t working right.

My eyebrow wouldn’t arch. I couldn’t close my left eye without closing my right.

Thinking in the back of my mind that these seemed very much like stroke symptoms, I raised my arms and stuck out my tongue straight and to the sides, because I’ve read that these are ways to determine if someone is having a stroke. Since I had a photograph to take, I blithely hopped in the car, and went to take the photo. During the small talk preceding pushing the button, I mentioned my peculiar issue. It made for a few pictures in which the subject had a concerned look on his face.

“You’ve got to get to the hospital now,” he said. “If you’ve got brain trauma, your brain is not working right, and you should not be making health decisions.”

That seemed logical. He followed me back to my home where my girlfriend was kind enough to take me to Saint Mary’s emergency room. Let me tell you, when you say, “I’ve either had or am having a stroke,” you don’t have to wait in line.

Turns out I’ve been stricken with a not-all-that-rare disorder called Bell’s Palsy. It’s a virus that infects a nerve on the face, sort of like chicken pox or herpes. So the left side of my face is paralyzed. There’s a good prognosis. Most research says 85 percent of people have full recovery without treatment in three weeks to six months.

Sucks. Most people can’t tell just by looking, but the left side of my mouth is turned down, I can’t smile with the left side of my mouth or left eye. I have sort of a constant sneer but since my right eyebrow is expressive, an interested look. Sort of like Spock but pissed off.

But if I run across you on the street or at school, please understand that I’m not actually angry with you. It’s just my face.

Re “Zoom. Zoom.” (Left Foot Forward, July 31): These schools sound like segregated schools like in the old days, only instead of segregating blacks, Hispanics are being segregated into zoom schools (with a few other kids thrown in so that the appearance of segregation can be denied). It is common knowledge that children learn to speak the language they are surrounded by, and they learn some bits of other languages they are taught, but these taught languages rarely develop into competency like that one sees in the mother tongue.

According to the article, the zoom schools have “high populations of English language learners and struggling students.” So the kids would be surrounded mostly by Spanish speaking children, or does someone claim this is not the case?

Guess what language is spoken on the playground. Segregating Spanish language speakers does not help Hispanic kids master English. They need more than classroom rudiments to function well. Asking the people who got the taxpayers’ $50 million dollars whether they are succeeding is like Eric Holder investigating himself. Isn’t de facto segregation illegal, not to mention immoral?

Same old renaissance I was driving back to town the other weekend and passed a billboard probably three hours out, near the Bay, for the Silver Legacy Resort.

It was advertising the typical things, a washed-up rock band, a stand-up comedian, and some sort of $10,000 slot tournament. Also on the billboard was the “Official Renossance Approved” stamp, something that I have been noticing more around town. I am all for some sort of cultural Renaissance here in Reno, especially after the recent conversations about our image problem. The name of this movement is even pretty catchy. It really seems like a great thing that needs to happen around

here. However, as I looked into it more I discovered it’s basically just a marketing campaign for the Silver Legacy, which hasn’t really reached out into the real community that is bringing change to this place.

In order for a real Renaissance to happen, it needs to happen with all of our new and interesting businesses.

It needs to happen with our music venues and art galleries. It needs to happen with the community, and not with the casinos advertising three hours outside of town for the same old shit that people already associate with us.

They might construe that as negative Re “Government is not the answer” (Let Freedom Ring, July 31): It would help your pitch to the new demographics to clarify the relationship between Republican and Libertarian. You should explain that the Republican party is owned and controlled by Libertarian billionaires; Republican office holders merely roll out their “liberty” agenda as ordered.

When Republicans can’t defund or deregulate, they just obstruct, broken government being almost as desirable as no government. Assure Millennials and Latinos that once enough of them squeeze inside the angry, white, shriveling tent that is this party, it’ll seem much less crazy in there. And don’t forget the rugged individualist appeal. Tell them they can be just like those plucky Koch brothers (the aforementioned owners). Armed with nothing more than a dream, some elite private schooling, multiple degrees from MIT, an inherited oil fortune, a great tan and perfect teeth, they built an empire—all by themselves. For Latinos, pitch a little more Jesus, a little less billonario.

Mexicans come from a place that has both a $0.60 per hour minimum wage and one guy who has $80 billion. Don’t tell them you think the minimum wage should be $0.

Eyes wide open Re “10 things I hate about Burning Man” (Feature story, Sept. 6, 2007): I read your piece and find it well-written and fascinating. I am an interested party just now trying to put together a mental picture of me and a Burning Man experience.

No tickets for this year, but who knows what the future will bring. I’m handy, mildly creative and willing to immerse myself in BM culture, but articles like yours here are a good basic guide to the trolls of all stripes on the playa. As a hiker and climber, I have often run into Sierra Club groups with an overdeveloped sense of exclusive, aristocratic ownership, much like your participation snobs.

I’ve read through most of the BM website, looked at innumerable pics, and then decided I needed to hear about the dark side of BM, during which search I found your article.

All the talk of freedom and radical self-expression sounded good, but I kept wondering how that ideal plays out with 70,000 people. The perverts, cougars, participation snobs, yahoos and tourists were all predictable, as was the ambiguous public/private space boundaries, etc., as soon as the floodgates opened in ticket sales. The Borg wanted a city, and they’re getting one, unfortunately.

But I just want to say thanks for the well-worded descriptions. They help me to more realistically, and virtually (at this point), knit my spirit into this tapestry with open eyes.

You embody the biker culture and you are how you are not to appear tough, but because you are tough. You have my respect.

To the Harley riders out there with $60,000 bikes, fresh leathers, a private law firm, and a grand total of 20 days per year spent on your motorcycle: You suck. You leave your hybrid in the garage and tool around high-visibility parts of town in force to feel tough for a week during Street Vibrations, but we all know you are poseurs. You are renting a time-share of a culture that you’ll never understand. Each night when you’ve finished pretending, you blaze through my neighborhood at midnight on your overpriced, lowperformance Harley, waking up my family and reaffirming to me that you are a poseur. No true badass Harley riders live in my neighborhood; it’s too Pleasantville. I will frequent a dive bar packed with rowdy, authentic, possibly problem-drinking bikers over a casino lounge filled with phony dentists or CPAs or contractors gallivanting in their leathers with their “brothers” for one week a year.

Goodbye, Ramsey I can’t believe this time has come, where I must sit down and try and cobble together my thoughts, feelby ings and memories about my son, my first born Art Farley son and the person who held the largest space in my heart. His unabashed joy at the simplest pleasures, which we as adults are so quick forget: a balloon, a ball, going for a stroll, spraying himself with the hose when helping me wash my truck, or going for a drive and listening to Fats Domino or the Beach Boys, were joys never lost on him. He loved everyone, and everyone loved him back. It was impossible to know him and not be deeply touched, as if he was just there to OPINION

make you feel love, deep and true, and to remind you how trivial most of our problems are.

His life was not easy, more hours in a hospital room than anyone should have to spend, let alone someone his age, but he took it all with grace and would even comfort me or his mother in moments where I felt like I was going to wither up and die. There would be hoses and wires everywhere, and he’d reach over and put his hand on my leg and give a smile and a look that said, “I’m all right, you’re all right, we’ll all be all right,” but I’m not all right, because that comfort and joy has left us and left a gaping hole in my heart.

I will carry on, as I must, but I will miss him beyond words. He was the best in all of us, robbed of the ability to take a walk, run, or just say in words all the love and joy that emanated from his big beautiful brown eyes. I see him everywhere and in everything, and I probably always will. He’s still teaching me things right now. Ramsey—a.k.a. Bubba, Scam, Ram Jam, Penguin, Buzz, Buster and so many other nicknames that only a truly loved person could have—I love you with all my heart and treasure the time you gave us.

The start is only the beginning Watching you grow up seems like a lifetime in a minute.

You always wanted to go wherever we traveled, getting lost briefly in a Guatemalan village on the shores of Lake Atitlan and playing with the children of Spanish friends along the walls of Avila, like a medieval child.

You used to beg me not to file for re-election, knowing it would mean another winter when I’d be gone before you woke up and arrive home well after bedtime. Yet, after college you became involved in politics at a much higher level, working in the U.S. Senate Cloakroom and now as a leadership advisor for an important female senator. You say you’ll never run for political office, having witnessed the bitterness and toll of campaigning all too closely, yet people wonder if it’s not your destiny.

Your wedding to a gentle, brilliant, politically astute young man gives the many progressives in your circle of family and friends such hope. If we are ever to move toward solving the world-threatening problems of climate change, religious warfare, and figuring out how to use our budget for the common good instead of further enriching the few, it’s educated, committed people like you who will do it. Our generation clearly has failed to lead by example.

Ken Cuccinelli, former Virginia attorney general and head of a group called Senate Conservatives Fund, has sent out a fundraising message attacking U.S. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, the Senate Democratic floor leader: “[Iowa is] one of the most competitive races in the country, and it could determine whether the Democrats continue to control the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) knows this, which is why he and his liberal allies are on the air right now attacking [Republican U.S. Senate nominee] Joni Ernst ... with negative, dishonest TV ads. The ads claim that Joni supports shipping jobs overseas because she signed a pledge not to raise taxes. It’s completely bogus. ... Even the left-leaning Politifact rated these attacks as ‘false’.”

Politifact, a Tampa Bay Times website that fact-checks journalists and politicians, has also been denounced by Reid on occasion. The claim against Ernst rests on her having signed the “Taxpayer Protection Pledge” circulated by a special interest group, a claim made against a number of candidates over the past several years. But Politifact, FactCheck and the Associated Press have all adjudged the claim to be false.

What’s not clear is what all this has to do with Reid. The Iowa TV spots are being run not by a Reid political action committee, but by the NextGen Climate Action Committee, which Congressional Quarterly says is funded by billionaire Democratic figure Tom Steyer.

Should local police be outfitted for war?

Ace in the hole Citing major league baseball’s “long, infamous history of labor exploitation dating to its inception,” several former minor league baseball players have sued the commissioner of baseball and Major League Baseball Inc. (MLB Inc.) to try to do something about the pay of minor leaguers, who earn less than fast food workers.

Because of a 92-year-old court ruling and the early-20th century congressional belief that MLB Inc.—which now takes in $8 billion a year—is only a game, not a business, commercial baseball enjoys an anti-trust exemption that allows team owners to conspire against their own players by jointly agreeing to hold down wages. No other professional sport enjoys such privilege.

So Missouri attorney Garrett Broshuis, instead of suing owners for colluding against their players, is trying an ace in the hole—suing for violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act and state laws on grounds that the teams are paying minor league players less than minimum wage and fail to pay overtime. Broshuis played six years in the minors for the San Francisco Giants and also writes for the Sporting News and Baseball America.

That the class action suit is being brought as a minimum wage claim is an indication of how little minor league players can make.

Some of them are reportedly supported financially by parents and live in penurious circumstances. The suit charges that players start at $1,100 a month, paid only during the season, which can be as short as three months. They are unpaid during the off season when they are expected to stay in shape. Only about onetenth of players go on to the majors.

The lawsuit quotes congressional testimony by former Giant and Texas Ranger Dan Peltier: “[It is] very much like the indentured servitude of the 1700s. When you first sign, you are owned by that team for basically seven seasons. A team can buy you, sell you, send you to another country, or fire you whenever they want. They can cut you if you get hurt. A player, on the other hand, cannot try to play for someone else. He can’t try out for his home team. You have to play for the team that drafted you even if they are loaded at your position. ... [T]his obsession with making the majors should not be a justification for the current treatment of minor league players, and I certainly hope it would not be used as an excuse to give major league and minor league owners a legal blank check.”

Military force Fueled by events in Missouri, Seattle, Salt Lake City, and the past, the nation has seen rising concern over the by “militarization” of hometown police Dennis Myers agencies.

Mike Haley Washoe County sheriff One former servicemember who said he served in Iraq, Brandon Friedman, posted a tweet that showed two photos—one of a police officer outfitted like a Ninja Turtle, the other of himself in the war zone wearing his military gear. “The gentleman on the left has more personal body armor and weaponry than I did while invading Iraq,” Friedman pointed out.

The story was pushed to a new level when U.S. senator and undeclared presidential candidate Rand Paul penned an essay for Time magazine: “When you couple this militarization of law enforcement with an erosion of civil liberties and due process that allows the police to become judge and jury—national security letters, no-knock searches, broad general warrants, pre-conviction forfeiture—we begin to have a very serious problem on our hands.”

Clearly, it was an approach to the Missouri story that took on a life of its own. The principal specific remedy FRIEDMAN TWEET proposed, however, has not been action to do something about any alleged military culture in police agencies but rather cancellation of a Defense Department program that has turned over billions of dollars in surplus military hardware—M16 assault rifles, grenade launchers, mine-resistant ambush protected vehicles—to state and local agencies.

Georgia Democratic U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson said he would

introduce a “Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act” that would reduce or end—the language of the measure is not yet available—the Pentagon program.

“Our main streets should be a place for business, families, and relaxation, not tanks and M16s,” Johnson said in a letter to other congressmembers. “Our local police are quickly beginning to resemble paramilitary forces. This bill will end the free transfers of certain aggressive military equipment to local law enforcement and ensure that all equipment can be accounted for.”

As it happened, however, while concern about police agencies was being expressed, some police officials said they agreed.

“What I would say is that not every sheriff’s office or police department around the country is similarly prepped,” said Washoe County Sheriff Mike Haley. “I am not a proponent for militarizing our police agencies beyond what their missions are. We are citizen soldiers, not armies of occupation.”

He said he would limit the use of heavy armament and military tactics to “SWAT [special weapons and tactics] situations where we know the suspect is armed, we have concerns for the safety of our employees, and we know we have to protect them.”

Paul identified the spread of military practices in police work with the drug war, but while that certainly fueled the problem, SWAT-style approaches to police work date back to the 1960s, when police developed them during the civil rights and antiwar movements that sometimes saw civil disorders and rioting—by police themselves, in one instance. Bike on water New water bike model said to be more efficient Water bikes aren’t new. People have been making them for years, but the sport has never really taken off. Judah Schiller, chief executive officer and founder of Schiller Sports, Inc., believes his new X1 model can help to change that. by Sage Leehey Schiller got the idea to make a water bike during a tour of the Bay Bridge.

He later made a water bike—a rough one that was basically a road bike on a s age l@ flotation system—and biked from Oakland to San Francisco across the Bay. news review.c om Since then his company has released the X1. Its design is a bit more complicated than Schiller’s first water bike, but it’s made with traditional bike parts, can be put together in less than 10 minutes, and weighs less than 50 pounds.

“One of the best things about this bike is any bike mechanic can open this up and identify every single part and know how to fix it,” Schiller said.

Schiller said it’s very efficient, too. It has no right angle gears or rudder.

As the rider works the pedals, it turns the propellers, and the handlebars control the direction the propellers are aimed, basically acting as thrusters for the bike. It can also go in reverse easily so the rider can back out of a dock.

The bike transmission is held in a water tight compartment, and the saddle, pedals and handlebars are almost—if not completely—identical to those of a land bike, too. The actual structure is a bit different, though, mostly because of the pontoons on each side. Both are twin-chambered for safety and they allow the bike to float about 400 pounds.

“You can put 50, 70 pounds of camping gear on the back and really be able to go out and explore and find beaches and take your bike to places where other bikes and cars wouldn’t be able to go,” Schiller said.

Schiller said they can customize bikes and have add-ons—like fishing pole mounts and tethers for snorkelers—that customers can choose.

X1. He was recently at Lake Tahoe and said that people seemed intrigued by com. water biking. He’s also talking to water-side hotels to gauge their interest in having these for guests and said many have expressed interest.

“They would love to see something that’s clean, human-powered, that doesn’t pollute sensitive beachfront areas, that’s sustainable,” Schiller said.

At a price tag of $6,495, it isn’t the cheapest bike you could purchase. But many hard core mountain bikers spend much more on their rides, and it’s less than half the price of a jet ski or wave runner, according to Schiller.

Schiller believes water biking will hit the biking world hard, just like mountain biking did when it became popular. But it will take some time.

“The vision is that water biking will have the same impact on the world of cycling as mountain biking did 40 some odd years ago when it first started,” Schiller said. “Road bikers laughed at the idea. … Ten or some odd years later, mountain biking sales were on par with that of road biking sales. … There are about 1 billion bikes built for land on a planet that is two-thirds water. We live on a blue planet, why not bike across it?”

The biggest difference—and advantage, according to Schiller—of a water bike to a land bike is the way you experience nature.

“When you’re mountain biking, you might see a bird, a squirrel,” Schiller said. “Here, you might see thousands of birds sitting on the water. … You see fish coming up, jumping out in front of you. Where I live in San Francisco, I have been out with dolphins and sea lions.” Ω OPINION

AmericA is being invAded by Aliens!

I’m not talking about foreign children crossing our southern border or malevolent beings from outer space. This is an invasion of tiny plants and animals from around the world that threaten our waterways and even our way of life.

I should know. I was a boat inspector in the front lines of the war against aquatic invasive species.

I saw the job posting last winter as I was considering what to do for the summer. The idea of hanging out on a boat ramp by a mountain lake was very appealing. I applied for and got a job with the Truckee Regional Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Program—TRAISPP. TRAISPP covers several reservoirs in the Truckee River Watershed, including Boca, Prosser and Stampede—water bodies popular with boaters wanting to avoid the hassle and expense of launching at Lake Tahoe.

Last year, the program was voluntary for boaters, so being a boat inspector was more about education than enforcement. We would normally be on station at first light to ensure thorough screening of OPINION

all vessels before they launched. Only a few hardy fishermen would already be afloat.

Mornings can be quite cold until the lake fog burns off, and the boaters begin to arrive. Until then, deer, eagles and the occasional hot air balloon rule the dawn.

When the boaters arrived, I would direct them to a coned-off area and hand them a clip board with a screening application for them to fill out. While they were completing it, I would ask them a few casual questions to determine if their boats required an actual inspection, decontamination or even the extreme measure of quarantine.

Most often a screening application was all that was needed, so I would explain about aquatic invasive species and how to guard against them. At that point, I would issue the vessel a sticker for the season, good throughout the watershed and at Donner Lake, which has its own inspectors.

During training, a lot of emphasis was placed on dealing with difficult boaters, but it is my experience that most boaters were at least patient with the process, and many expressed sincere gratitude that we were there to protect their water.

Alien Origin Whatever you may think about the merits of globalization, one thing is certain: All that global trade is helping transport foreign plants and animals to places where they don’t belong.

Quagga mussels are one of the greatest threats to North American waters. They are no threat to their native Ukrainian lakes and rivers, thanks to natural predators and other factors, but having no such restraints here, they are free to multiply without constraint.

Scientists believe quaggas made their way to North America in the ballast tanks of ocean-going ships headed for ports in the Great Lakes. Quaggas were first spotted in Lake Erie in 1989.

Even though quagga mussels are the poster children of aquatic invasive species, they are not the only ones.

Zebra mussels pose another threat similar to that of quaggas. There are also Asian clams, New Zealand mudsnails and Eurasian watermilfoil to contend with. The latter two have already found their way into Lake Tahoe and Donner Lake and are making their way down the Truckee River into the Reno area.

Eurasian watermilfoil was first spotted years ago in the Tahoe Keys where it probably arrived on the hull of a boat. It spread rapidly and officials brought in threshers to chop the stuff up. All that was accomplished was to spread it more widely.

New Zealand mudsnails are tiny enough to hide in a clump of mud and are probably spread by fishermen who may not clean their gear well enough.

The main educational duty of a boat inspector is to acquaint the public with these various threats and inform them about ways to identify and destroy them before they are spread to other water bodies.

Quagga Mussels may be small individually, but as a species, they are the greatest threat to North American waters after humans.

Quagga mussels are prolific breeders. A single mature female is capable of producing up to 1 million eggs a year. Within a few days of fertilization, microscopic larvae called veligers emerge. These are free-floating creatures that quickly develop shells while looking for a hard surface to attach themselves to. This period can last up to four weeks and, although 99 percent of veligers perish before they become established, there are plenty of survivors.

Where quaggas become established, they quickly ruin the ecosystem. The mussels are coin-sized bivalve filter feeders. Each one can filter one liter of water a day, stripping it of the plankton that sustains fish and native mussels.

Since the veligers will attach to any hard surface, they can clog the filters and screens of power and water treatment plants, costing millions of dollars to remove them. They also foul marinas, boat engines and beaches.

They only live for three to five years, so some beaches on the Great Lakes have drifts of the smelly sharp shells several feet thick in some places.

Since they were first discovered, quaggas have spread rapidly around the Great Lakes and nearby rivers and now infest many watersheds in the East. By 2007, they had infested Lake Mead and parts of the Colorado River.

This dramatic expansion is the result of human activities. That’s where I come in.

Quagga mussels are surprisingly resilient. They can live out of water for as long as 30 days under the right conditions and even longer where moisture is present. And because the veligers are microscopic free-floaters, 14 | RN&R |

Quaggas have not been found in the Truckee River watershed or Lake Tahoe yet. Boat inspection programs are particularly targeted at keeping it that way.

One of my first questions during screening was to ask where the boat had launched in the last 30 days. If the answer was Lake Mead or another water body thought to be infested such as Lahontan Reservoir, I would not issue a sticker until a complete inspection or decontamination was carried out.

This does not apply to non-motorized vessels such as kayaks or paddle boards, but all other vessels including sailboats would need to be closely inspected. The first step would be to board the vessel and look for standing water or mud in lockers, bilges and boat systems.

Next would be an examination of the hull, screw and trailer. Veligers may be invisible, but they can be felt, having a texture like coarse sandpaper.

Any time any evidence of infestation is found, decontamination is necessary. Wakeboard boats with ballast tanks are always decontaminated if they have been to another water body.

My program was voluntary last year, so any boater could launch if they wanted regardless of the risk to the environment. However, most boaters complied and had their boats decontaminated. This involved taking the vessel to a decontamination station at Northstar or Alpine Meadows ski areas and paying a fee for the service. Decontamination is achieved

by flushing all internal systems and pressure washing the exterior with 140 degree water for 30 seconds.

Alternatively, an obviously infested boat could be impounded and quarantined even under the voluntary program. I know of no instance when that was required last summer, though.

The mantra of the boat inspection program is for boaters to arrive clean, drained and dry: bilge plug out, hull wiped off and various lockers and water toys dried out. Observing this mantra can often mean the difference between a quick inspection and a full decontamination. At mandatory inspection water bodies such as Lake Tahoe, that can mean the difference between waiting in line for up to an hour and being on the water.

Aliens in AmericA Invasive species prevention programs can be quite expensive. The program at Lake Tahoe alone costs nearly $1.5 million a year, but according to a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers study, should quaggas become established in the Tahoe Basin, the tourism industry could lose $22 million.

However, the program is not without its critics. Truckee was poised to approve mandatory inspections last summer but decided to postpone action until more scientific studies could be conducted.

One of the program’s most vocal critics is long-time Donner Lake resident and retired civil engineer Steve Urie, who contends that invasive mussels cannot successfully colonize Tahoe or Donner lakes because their calcium levels are far too low to sustain the animals.

He points out that only one local study supports the belief that quaggas can survive in these waters. In 2008, the Environmental Protection Agency gave Dr. Sudeep Chandra, a University of Nevada, Reno scientist, a $20,000 grant to conduct a limited experiment to test quaggas’ survivability in Lake Tahoe.

Chandra’s team transplanted eight adult quaggas from Lake Mead to his Reno lab where they were placed in water taken from the Tahoe Keys.

One mussel died and the rest were losing body weight when the experiment concluded, but Chandra wrote that it is possible for adult quaggas to live and reproduce in Lake Tahoe. He suggested that mandatory boat inspections are prudent.

According to Urie, the study was inconclusive at best. He believes it a waste of scarce financial resources for the town to fund the inspection program based on such weak evidence.

Another criticism of the program in Truckee is how permeable it has been. For example, inspections at Donner Lake take place only at the public boat ramp. Two other ramps are unmonitored. Boaters at any of the reservoirs can and do launch from the shore instead of the boat ramps.

That wasn’t much of a problem when the program was voluntary because of its educational component.

But, this year, the program is mandatory with decontamination fees expected to pay half of its expense at Donner Lake.

In response to critics, program officials point out that their efforts include prevention of the spread of all aquatic invasive species.

Thanks to the ongoing drought, many nearby water bodies are drying up and that means more boats heading to the deeper waters of Alpine lakes such as Tahoe and Donner. Tahoe boat inspectors saw a 17 percent increase over the Fourth of July weekend, and the season was still young.

Ironically, despite increased demand, funding is going to decrease dramatically. About half of the Tahoe boat inspection program’s $1.5 million comes from a federal program that will expire next year.

According to Dennis Zabaglo, AIS Program Coordinator for the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, cuts are being enacted this year in anticipation of next year’s shortfall. The inspection station at Homewood has been closed, hours of operation at the other stations have been cut and fees have been increased.

“We are actively pursuing publicprivate partnerships to make up for the loss of funding,” Zabaglo says, “but we’re also seeing a lot of buy-in from the boating public and that makes our job much easier.”

Zabaglo estimates his program, jointly operated with the Tahoe Regional Conservation District, has intercepted more than 20 infested boats so far this season.

By contrast, the Truckee watershed program is seeing an increase in funding, according to TRAISPP director Teresa Crimmens. This program is primarily funded by grants from local governments, environmental groups and the Truckee Meadows Water Authority. It is also part of the Tahoe Regional Conservation District.

Last summer, TRAISPP employed a half-dozen boat inspectors. This year, there is only one part-time inspector even though boat inspections

are now mandatory in Nevada and Sierra counties.

Crimmens says the program is moving toward encouraging selfinspection programs through increased use of informational rack cards and signage.

“There are lots of places to launch, any time of the day or night and we can’t police them all,” Crimmens says.

“That’s why we’re moving toward mandatory self inspections.”

The new approach is modeled after a similar program in Utah where boaters must fill out and display a questionnaire that mirrors what information would be asked by a boat inspector.

Kim Gorman, program director for the Tahoe Regional Conservation District, says her organization never intended to “own” the inspection programs in Nevada and Sierra counties, just get them started. It is now up to the counties to develop their own programs.

But, aside from unintended consequences brought about by the fish themselves, there was also the fear that toxins collected by the mussels would work their way up through the food chain.

Zabaglo says the TRPA has been experimenting with plastic sheets to kill New Zealand mudsnails and manual removal of Eurasian watermilfoil in Emerald Bay. He says the program is highly successful, but critics say the plastic sheets also kill native species.

Another alternative is to eat invasive species ourselves. Farming crayfish in Lake Tahoe is one example of turning an invasive species into food. Invasive Tiger Prawns are a big problem in Louisiana but are now a popular delicacy there. Even quaggas can be eaten by humans, but the toxins they contain are a problem.

A radical new approach was unveiled in a paper published in Science magazine earlier this month.

Invasive species are not just aquatic, and they are occurring everywhere.

Noxious weeds are endangering the Nevada desert even as bark beetles are devastating Sierra forests. Alien snakes, bugs and birds are upsetting the ecological balance in other parts of North America even as North American plants and animals endanger other parts of the world. Some scientists classify cats, wild horses and even humans as invasive species.

Although prevention is the most effective policy to date, scientists are looking into other ways to address this global problem. One approach is to simply do nothing. For example, in some lakes long infested with quaggas the water is cleaner now than before infestation. That’s because the mussels effectively ate everything edible and then starved to death, but that took many years.

Scientists have also considered introducing alien fish that eat quaggas.

genetic engineer Kevin Esvelt, one of the paper’s authors, gene drive technology could potentially cause local extinction of invasive species and restore the original ecosystem.

The idea is to identify a genetic alteration that could reduce pesticide resistance, hinder a population’s ability to reproduce or have some other desirable effect on an invasive species.

Scientists could then insert that alteration into the genome of an invasive species, but there is no guarantee that it will take because there is only a 50-50 chance the altered gene would propagate.

Esvelt says gene drives make it much more likely the altered gene will be dominant thanks to new technology that gives genetic engineers the ability to target very specific elements in the genome.

The new tool can be applied in a variety of ways, says Esvelt. One scenario is to alter a sex-determining gene to increase the likelihood that progeny are male. Another could be knocking out genes that are important for fertility.

However, scientists have yet to consider possible downsides such as altered genes further altering into something else once introduced or spreading to similar but non-targeted species.

Even Esvelt urges scientists to make sure the technology is being used responsibly, but with invasive species causing $120 billion in

economic damage in the United States alone, there are plenty of incentives to push forward.

In another recent development, researchers in the United Kingdom and Germany have developed a model to predict the likelihood of a bio invasion at locations around the world.

They studied two years worth of shipping data involving millions of voyages to map which areas are most at risk from aquatic invasive species.

They found that the animals are less likely to survive long voyages than previously thought, but the proliferation of shorter trips makes some areas more prone to successful invasions.

These include the Suez and Panama canals as well as major ports such as Hong Kong and Singapore.

Their hope is to spur the shipping industry to spending money on ways to purify their ballasts before animals escape into local water. Shipping companies are reluctant to take such steps, but the model could give local port authorities more power to enact stricter rules in the future.

In the meantime, boaters will have to be the ones who arrive clean, drained and dry. And if they don’t, hopefully, there will be a boat inspector as a last resort against the invading aliens. Ω

It’s true that music is not the most profitable venture, so there’s something to be said for this megalith’s business model, which is aimed toward both beginners and pros. Any local guitarist would be lying if they told you they haven’t shopped here, because sometimes Guitar Center will genuinely offer the best deal in town on a brand new instrument or accessory.

Once you find something that fits, and if you’re between the ages of 7-14, you can sign up for Camp Fuze during fall, winter or spring break.

If you’re outside of that age group, they have a program called Rock Starz that puts you in touch with like-minded people to get your act going. If you’re curious about music, or have always wanted to start a band, Music Fuze is a great first step.

Chess When I first heard about the musical Chess, I thought to myself, “Wow, is there also a musical by about doing your taxes?” Because I couldn’t Jessica Santina imagine a more unlikely, and less interesting, subject to sing about.

Despite having never seen or read about the show until I attended Rising Tide Productions’ debut performance of Chess at Reno Little Theater, I wasn’t too far off the mark. The musical, a pop opera, takes place during the international chess championship played between the United States and the rising tide U.S.S.R. during the Cold War—and was Productions’ chess is about as exciting as I’d expected. at reno Little theater, The chess championship takes place 147 E. Pueblo st., on in Bangkok between reigning champion aug. 22, 23, 29 and Anatoly Sergievsky (Jeff Chamberlin), 30 at 7:30 p.m.; aug.

Chess is their Cold War-torn love story.

Tim Rice conceived and wrote the lyrics for Chess; Rice is noted for his collaborations with Andrew Lloyd Webber (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita). Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA wrote the maddeningly tuneless, often chaotic music. The only memorable song is “One Night in Bangkok,” which Murray Head, who played Freddie in the show’s premiere, first made famous.

The show has repeatedly earned scathing reviews since its debut in 1988, for the reasons I’ve cited here. It’s a damned-nearimpossible show to do well, both musically and dramatically, because the book and music both contain so many problems.

Rising Tide Productions, a new Reno theater troupe, couldn’t have selected a more challenging piece to launch with, so I applaud their temerity. Chess is directed

by David Tolles and Nicole Dzadek Tolles, with musical direction by Neal Dluzak Long, and choreography by Jeanette

Conkey. They’ve done a fair job, and obviously put in hard work, with the material.

However, a lack of across-the-board tightness in performances, numerous troubles with sound and overly complex staging created problems from the get-go.

The standout performances are by Chamberlin, whose Anatoly has the most emotional depth of any character and whose singing is the most consistently strong (although not entirely), and Lenz, a trained soprano who also is one of the show’s best features. However, her excellent voice is actually far too powerful for this chaotic material, which unfairly makes her seem screechy in places, even when it’s clear she isn’t usually.

And this leads me to probably my biggest complaint: the sound.

Clearly, the directors never sat in the audience to hear how the voices and music worked together. Either the piano (the only musical accompaniment, which gave the songs a repetitive flatness) completely stepped on the voices, making them impossible to understand, or the singing was blaringly loud in order to compete. And at one point, the chorus sings from the hallway a folk song that’s meant to be background but which was so loud that no one speaking on stage can be heard at all.

Members of the chorus seemed occasionally to forget lyrics or choreography, and their movements were often clunky.

And then there’s the set, made up of what seemed like a dozen chairs, all of which needed to be moved, distractingly, between every scene. Though the set design was ambitious and seemed an intelligent take on the chess theme, it was too complex and yet lacking in color. That actually could be said about the show overall. Ω

Virginia St., 580-7770 Perhaps luck matters as much as anything in the restaurant biz, giving the Lucky Beaver an edge in a building that has by Todd South housed everything from a family-style diner to a “breastaurant” since the 1970s. Currently, it’s an adults-only sports bar decorated with classic pin-up artwork and a high-tech rotating grill on display with chefs firing high-end steaks, burgers, etc.

My wife and I visited with a group of friends. We started with 10 jumbo wings ($11.50), available in a variety of sauces, served with celery and ranch dressing. We chose the classic hot wing sauce, and though not crispy or particularly “jumbo,” the wings were adequate if a bit overpriced.

Calamari fries ($9.50) were a better deal and enjoyed by all. Eight breaded, deep-fried strips were served with lemon wedges, cocktail and tartar sauces. With a crispy coating on tender, perfectly cooked squid, even the mollusc-challenged enjoyed them.

“Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors,” is prominently displayed, claiming, “humanely raised, small-farm beef, free of hormones or antibiotics fed a diet of grass, hay, then finished on corn.” Do the research, and you’ll find that “finished on corn” ends any benefit of starting with “grass and hay,” and the purveyor is a factory venture serving hundreds of hotels and tourist destinations. Having said that, the 10-ounce filet mignon I sampled ($43) was expertly medium rare, among the best I’ve ever enjoyed, despite the fact the sides offered were identical to those for burgers. Is it me, or is it weird to feature a top-dollar filet and pair it like a cheeseburger?

The premium price seems odd in this context.

Speaking of which, sides sampled included fries, tater tots, parmesangarlic fries ($1 extra), battered onion rings ($2 extra), side and Caesar salads ($2.50 extra). The fries were skin-on and covered in goodies, but barely fried, limp and disappointing.

Both salads were crisp and tasty, if annoyingly overcharged for substitution. The onion rings were quite good.

Tater tots are currently a hipster food truck trend, and these seemed like they came out of a freezer bag. We had to remind the server we ordered them; they were served at the end of the meal with no charge.

The “steak burger” section claims, “You’re about to enjoy the best burger ever!” To be fair, they weren’t bad.

But from the $12 half-pound “Beaver Burger” ($1 extra for cheese) to the $2 Double Down full-pounder (or another $7 for the triple), the Beaver’s pricing indicates something special. I’ve enjoyed locally-raised, truly grass-fed beef, but I couldn’t detect anything extraordinary about these burgers.

The bun is so thick that—combined with toppings—you completely lose the flavor of the meat. There are better deals in Reno for high-quality burgers, and one of my local favorite full-pounders is literally half the price and twice as tasty.

I did sample some of the seared, sesame-encrusted, “sashimi grade Ahi tuna flown in directly from Hawaii to our front door” ($18), and it was damned good. No complaints, other than you can spend the same for a full AYCE sushi dinner anywhere in Reno.

There are hot dogs and breakfast sandwiches and desserts and other stuff on the menu, but it’s a bar, so let’s talk beverages. The Lucky Beaver Pale Ale ($5) was a fine, full pint. The Horni Beaver ($10) and Bloody B….. ($9) were acceptable if not exceptional examples of a margarita and bloody Mary, heavy on the ice for the price. “Bloody B…..” is how that drink is listed on the menu.

Apparently they’re OK with making you think “Bloody Beaver” but not with actually printing it.

Service was friendly and fast, unsurprising since the place was mostly empty at dinner hour on a weeknight. Still, they’re new on the scene and will likely take some time to find their footing. This location near the convention center might just be the lucky break they’ll need to succeed. Ω

Act your age The Expendables 3 Sylvester Stallone and his admittedly awesome band of old crows take some major missteps in The Expendables 3, an unfortunate leap backwards for the aging action star franchise.

For No. 3, Stallone and company jettison the smarmy Bruce Willis in favor of the growly Harrison Ford, and this is a cool change. It also adds Wesley Snipes as Doctor Death, Antonio by Banderas as fast-talking comic relief and, most Bob Grimm notably, Mel Gibson playing himself (translation: The World’s Biggest Asshole).

Stallone and director Patrick Hughes should’ve stopped right there as far as casting, and given the group—which also includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and many others—a decent script

to go by. This is a sufficient enough cast for any action movie, so get cracking with the pyrotechnics and focus in on a story that makes sense.

Instead, and probably because the production could only afford the big guys for a minimal amount of shooting time apiece, the script has Stallone’s Barney Ross putting the old guys on ice after the first 30 minutes in favor of a new, mostly younger crew.

Most of the new crew is, in short, completely uninteresting and lacking the charisma of their older counterparts. Too much screen time is given to the likes of mixed martial arts superstar Ronda Rousey, who can most certainly kick the shit out of most men but can’t act for squat. Marquee names like Kellan Lutz (The Twilight Saga) and boxer Victor Ortiz round out the boring faction of the new cast.

Yeah, I’d rather see this crew instead of Ford, Schwarzenegger, Snipes and Statham.

Sure.

The plot is a mish-mosh of action movie clichés, as Barney finds himself gathering the new team to go up against Stonebanks (Gibson), a former Expendable turned arms dealer and bad guy. Gibson gets a couple of scenes to show off his catcher’s glove face— seriously … stop smoking, Mel!—and act all crazy. There’s a scene where the older guys show up looking all sad because they want to kill Stonebanks instead of the young dudes getting to waste him. It’s heartbreaking stuff.

Prepare to cry.

After some tedious scenes introducing the new crew—and featuring Kelsey Grammer of all people—Barney does eventually let the old guys back into the movie, and this results in a halfway decent finale where many things blow up. It also has that typical showdown between Barney’s good guy and Stonebanks where the villain gets the upper hand, yet throws away his weapon in favor of hand-to-hand combat. I’m sure Mr. Gibson can fight with the best of them in his weight class but Gibson vs. Stallone is a bit outlandish, even if Stallone is something like 95 years old.

I did like the sight of Harrison Ford piloting a helicopter with Han Solo style, and Snipes is fun in his few scenes. The screenplay has a lot of inside jokes about his tax evasion jail sentence that aren’t exactly clever, but do warrant a chuckle or two.

Dolph Lundgren’s “Sore Loser” T-shirt also put a smile on my face, as did Terry Crews once again letting loose with his really big gun.

I still don’t understand the Jason Statham phenomenon. He’s been OK in a couple of films, but most of the stuff he slums in is trash.

I guess I’m sort of grateful that this movie puts him in more of a background role.

In an effort to make more money, the movie is PG-13 (the previous installments were R-rated). Dumb move. The target audience for this sort of stuff likes their movies filled with bloody carnage and F-bombs. This boneheaded move, along with a pirated copy of the film being downloaded by millions, has resulted in The Expendables 3 being far from a box office darling.

Unless this movie catches fire overseas, I have to think the franchise is in jeopardy. By my count, the franchise has only one decent movie, The Expendables 2, and a couple of mediocre ones. If you can’t get it done in the third installment, you are usually toast in Hollywood. Ω

A lot can go wrong when you film a movie on and off for more than 12 years with the cast aging naturally. Cast members could die, the director could lose his drive and quit, etc. Writer-director Richard Linklater’s cinematic undertaking doesn’t have the ring of experimental or stunt filmmaking about it. It’s just a great looking, terrifically acted, tremendously moving film made progressively over 12 years. It’s an amazing thing to see young Mason (Ellar Coltrane, who we first see set to the joyous strains of Coldplay’s “Yellow” on the soundtrack) go from a wide-eyed 5-year-old boy staring at the sky to an 18-year-old college student dealing with girls and big life decisions.

It’s equally fascinating to watch Ethan Hawke, playing Mason’s father, go from Training Day Hawke to The Purge Hawke in the course of three hours. We also see Linklater’s daughter Lorelei playing Samantha, Mason’s sister, and Patricia Arquette as Mom, putting in her best performance since she graced the screen as Alabama in True Romance. All of the performers go through beautiful and awkward stages, aging before our eyes without the aid of special effects makeup. This is a movie that will only be made once. Nobody will ever pull anything like this off again. Linklater has made a permanent, monumental mark on cinematic history.

The Giver

In a post-apocalyptic society, humans are being drugged into a state where they feel no emotion, are completely submissive and see no colors. When they hit their late teens, they are assigned their job for the rest of their life. Everybody’s equal, there is no war, all aspects of life are predestined.

Lois Lowry’s novel had an interesting premise, but Phillip Noyce’s film simply feels and looks wrong. For starters, it comes off as a rip-off of Pleasantville, with the film slowly changing from black and white to color, while elements of the dystopian society come off like a dated Disney ride. As for the casting, it’s good to see the likes of Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep on hand in pivotal roles, but the young leads (Brenton Thwaites and Odeya Rush) seem like they are overreaching. Taylor Swift shows up for a couple of minutes in a cameo, a cameo that is being marketed as a starring role and is mighty misleading for her fan base. Bridges is at least interesting as an old wise man storing all memories of past societies in his head. He’s tasked with passing his memories on to young Jonas (Thwaites), as if that isn’t going to cause some sort of problem. Noyce gives us some pretty pictures and a halfway decent cast, and basically doesn’t know what to do with it.

Guardians of the Galaxy

This is a goofy, dazzling, often hilarious convergence of inspired nuttiness. You’ll probably hear comparisons to the original Star Wars, The Fifth Element and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, and all of those comparisons would be plausible. It’s a blessedly new and crazy direction for the Marvel universe, and director James Gunn (Super, Slither) has taken a huge step towards the A-list. Also taking a giant leap toward the upper echelon of Hollywood royalty is Chris Pratt, who mixes great charm, rugged action hero bravado and premium comic timing as Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord.

After a prologue that shows the Earthly origins of his character, Pratt sets the tone for the movie during the opening credits, grooving to his cassette-playing Sony Walkman on an alien planet and using squirrelly little critters as stand-in microphones. After unknowingly stealing a relic that could have the power to take down the entire universe, Quill finds himself in serious trouble. Events lead to his joining forces with a genetically enhanced Raccoon named Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper), a gigantic tree person thing named Groot (voice of Vin Diesel), an angry, muscle-bound alien named Drax (Dave Bautista) and an ass-kicking green woman named Gamora (Zoe Saldana). Together, they become the Guardians of the Galaxy, an unlikely troupe of mischievous outcasts that plays like the Avengers meets the Marx Brothers. The cast, buoyed by a spirited script cowritten by Gunn, keeps things zippy and always funny. Visually, the movie is a tremendous feat of special and makeup effects. If you see it in 3-D, you’ll be happy with the results.

Boyhood

Schwarzenegger, steps into the role of Son of Zeus. Actually, this film suggests that the title character might not be immortal, and is part of a scam. It’s one of the many sly touches that make this movie enjoyable. Johnson is good in the lead, and his band of battle disciples includes Ian McShane and Rufus Sewell in fine form. It’s directed by Brett Ratner, the man who got himself into trouble with legions of rabid fans for screwing up X-Men: The Last Stand. (I didn’t think it was that bad.) Ratner does a lot with a medium-sized budget. (Yes, $100 million for a blockbuster is medium these days.) The movie looks good, and is quite clever at times. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting this to be much good given its pedigree, but the results are kind of enjoyable. Johnson has developed into a fun movie star, and Ratner can make a decent movie, even if he is the guy responsible for the Rush Hour films.

Let’s Be Cops

A couple of 30-something buddies (Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans, Jr.), bored with their humdrum lives, dress up as cops for a masquerade party and discover that things are pretty cool when people think you are the law. So they take the masquerade beyond the party and start chasing criminals and busting perps. Wayans, Jr., is the spitting image of his dad in every way, and it feels like this is a movie starring his dad after he’s time traveled from the past into the present for the shoot. Johnson, who has been making a name for himself in smart indie comedies (Safety Not Guaranteed, Drinking Buddies) tries to go big time with this vehicle, and fails miserably. The premise is insulting—not to mention a little dangerous—and it’s delivered with stale humor and bad performances all around. Director and co-writer Luke Greenfield (The Girl Next Door) has a made a movie more ugly than funny, and makes Johnson and Wayans, Jr., two funny guys, look like amateurs.

Lucy

What starts out as a potentially great movie winds up being a merely good one in the end. Scarlett Johansson stars as the title character, an American living in Taiwan who gets mixed up with the wrong people and winds up not only a drug mule, but a drug mule with a highly experimental drug placed inside her lower stomach. When the drugs start to leak, Lucy winds up using her brain to full capacity, not only resulting in her ability to control her body but also the forces around her. Luc Besson directs with his usual visual competence, and Johansson is great in the title role. The problem keeping the film from greatness is that it feels as if it’s going to some great place, and then suddenly ends at 89 minutes. Granted, it’s a good 89 minutes, but I was left feeling a bit unfulfilled. Morgan Freeman shows up as a scientist who knows a lot about brains, while Min-sik Choi (the original Oldboy) plays a true bastard of a bad guy. Surely, the premise is total bullshit, but the resultant mayhem is fun bullshit at that. I just wish Besson had a more complete story to tell.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Legions of Michael Bay haters have been jumping all over this Turtles reboot before it even hit the screen. It’s actually not a Michael Bay film; he only served as producer on this one. Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans, Battle Los Angeles) is the director here, and he’s put something together that is far more coherent than the latest Bay-helmed Transformers movie. This is not to say that the movie is any good, because it actually isn’t, but it is markedly better than most of Bay’s output. Megan Fox plays April, a wannabe reporter who stumbles upon a vigilante force protecting Manhattan from an evil terrorist group. The vigilantes turn out to be the infamous turtles— also, coincidentally, the turtles April had as a child. The turtles, the result of scientific experiments, were raised in the sewers by a rat, and now they are ready to rise above the street surface and kick some ass. The film has some good moments, and the turtles eat some pizza and get some laughs. Fox is a bit of a bore in the central human role, Will Arnett is virtually wasted as her cameraman, and I’m sick and tired of William Fichtner playing bad guys. The special effects are OK, but the story offers nothing special. A sequel is already being prepared. A director with a better sense of wonder, and a better sense of humor, could do the franchise well.

Metal heart Walk Away Alpha “It’s stupid—there’s this connotation with metal that you have to be born in a demon lair, and be into skulls, flames and the by Anna Hart devil to be a metal musician,” says Donovan Spellacy, guitarist for Walk Away Alpha. “But in our music, we try to bring light into dark places.”

While metal might not be the first genre you think of when searching for social criticism, existential questions or observations on the human condition, these are the subjects you’ll find in Walk Away Alpha’s lyrics.

Founded in 2004, Walk Away Alpha is a four-piece metal band whose aggressive rhythm and vigorous electric guitar-driven sound unites with lyrics that ask you to question the status quo, find your purpose, and stare into the face of your mortality and yourself.

allowed them to explore more harmonic, rhythmic and technical complexity in their songs, while keeping mindful of the line between enhancing and detracting from story told between the melody and lyrics.

While fans have sometimes compartmentalized the group under the label of “Melodic Deathcore” or otherwise, the music of Walk Away Alpha isn’t molded to fit the form of one sub-genre or another.

Instead, it encompasses elements of the whole gamut of metal, and takes inspiration from a wide span of its musical history, from older bands, like Pantera and Deftones, to more current ones, like All Shall Perish and Between the Buried and Me. Sometimes, there’s an age disparity between the band and the teens who come out to see their shows. Some audience members aren’t even old enough to have seen Pantera.

Nevertheless, Walk Away Alpha continues to use their music to bridge the gap.

Over its 10 year span so far, Walk Away Alpha has performed countless shows in the Reno area and all over the West Coast, as well as three national tours.

They have also come out with an LP and shared the stage with well-known bands like Norma Jean, All Shall Perish, and Born of Osiris.

This past May saw the release of a new, full-length album, titled Destroyers of the Earth.

Jamie King, a producer who has worked with metal bands like Glass Casket and Scale the Summit, mastered the tracks for Walk Away Alpha, and thanks to his connections, Destroyers of the Earth features talent from one of the band’s biggest influences.

The track, “Divinations” contains a guitar solo written specifically for the album by guitarist Dustie Waring, from Between the Buried and Me. While Walk Away Alpha is currently playing local shows in Reno, as well as continuously searching for a label to sign with, their main focus now is writing music for their next album. Ω

Since guitarists Trent Odneal and Spellacy formed the band, Walk Away Alpha has seen its share of members come and go. But they’ve had their current lineup for two years, adding Josh Mathis on drums in 2010, and Eric Iglesias on vocals in 2012.

The change of members over time has also contributed to a change of style in the music.

In its early years, Walk Away Alpha was a five-piece progressive rock band. But after the departure of three of the members in early 2008, Odneal and Spellacy were left to their own devices and began reinventing the group with a harder, heavier sound.

“We just got tired of playing the same old riffs and chords,” says Odneal.

Transitioning to metal afforded Walk Away Alpha the opportunity to venture into territory that

Under new anger management When my boyfriend and I started dating, he was kind of a hothead. His first encounter with my friends was a game of touch football on the beach. He and another guy collided, and he lost his temper. There was a good bit of yelling, and I think people were pretty shocked. To his credit, he realized he had an anger problem. Over time, he has worked hard on it, and now he doesn’t blow up anymore. He really is a changed man, and I thought people would recognize it, but I’ve recently learned that they all still see him as the scary-angry guy. Is there a way to change that?

Sure, in the months following that friendly Sunday afternoon death match, your friends had various opportunities to see that your boyfriend’s changed. Sadly, this probably hasn’t made the slightest dent in their opinion of him, thanks to our brain’s penchant for energy conservation.

Once we’ve figured something out—some bit of information or how to do something—our brain creates a cognitive shortcut, shrink-wrapping and storing the knowledge so, the next time around, we’ll react automatically instead of having to think the thing through. These cognitive shortcuts work great when you, say, want more light to read by. You know to reach over and switch on a lamp; you don’t have to figure out what a lamp is or whether yanking the dog’s tail might make his eyes light up the room.

Unfortunately, this autothink makes undoing first impressions like trying to unspill red wine on a white rug. The next time we see a person, our brain shoves us our mental flashcard on them—“Oh, right, Explody McSploderson.” There’s no mulling over whether that view 32 | RN&R |

of them might be due for revision. Researchers, predictably, call this cognitive laziness “first impression bias.” It’s a form of confirmation bias, our tendency to favor information that confirms our beliefs and ignore any that suggests we might be mistaken. Information updates are especially easy to overlook when they’re subtle, like an explody guy shrugging off a small affront, which is far less visual and memorable than that time he turned into Conan the Touch Football Barbarian.

A way to overcome first impression bias, suggested by research by Kai H. Lim, is presenting new information about your boyfriend in such “unambiguous” and “vivid” ways that it becomes hard to ignore. Tell friends straightout that he’s changed, and explain his motivation—ideally while walking past him meditating on a park bench with the Dalai Lama or running a rescue for hummingbird single mothers. At the very least, tell stories—true stories—laying out how differently he now responds. Information presented in story form tends to be stickier, and “vivid” mental pictures of his transformation may quash the ambiguity that helps maintain first impression bias. Finally, add a call to action—a request that friends give him a second look through the lens of this new information. Ω

A few weeks from now, I don’t want to have to be comparing you to him. If you hope to hold your new position or continue to wield your added clout for longer than just a little while, you should take all necessary steps. How? Nurture the web of support that will sustain you, for example. Don’t burn a single bridge. Cultivate real empathy, not just the showy kind. Avoid manipulative behavior, even if you think you can get away with it. Be a skillful gatherer of information.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

Golda Meir was the prime minister of Israel from 1969-1974. Jonathan Bascom There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth when the old Dreamers Coffee House under the Riverside Artist Lofts closed down (even more than when the famed nightclub and dive DelMar Station shut down years ago). Dreamers Coffee House & Deli is having its two-year anniversary this month at its new location at 701 S. Virginia St., 322-8040.

You ran Dreamers on the river for how long?

We were on the Riverwalk for eight years.

And when did you come here to Virginia and St. Lawrence?

We came here to Virginia and St. Lawrence in the Midtown section in August of 2012.

Is there a big difference between the two locations?

Yes. The big difference is down on the Riverwalk, there were lots and lots of office buildings, the court houses, lots of professional people that had law offices and the courtrooms and bank buildings that were surrounding us, as well as City Hall across the street and the post office.

We do a lot of students in the evenings coming down to study. We have a number of people who come down to sit and relax and hang out and dates, but there are a lot of bars in the area, and it seems like the bars do pretty good in the evenings. It seems like the people do more bars than anything else in the evenings.

How do you attract the artists who display here?

We display local art like we did before. I just don’t have the same square footage for wall space. I do have artists who are wanting to display, wanting to show off.

That’s a plus. People walk in to see the art that changes every four to six weeks.

I’ve been getting more and more people inquiring, as well as the reputation that we had at the old place of hanging local artists.

Here in Midtown, it’s more of a residential area, so I kind of paint myself more as a residential coffeehouse. On all four sides of us, we basically have residential areas, with just a few businesses scattered in.

And how does that work for you, is that more traffic and better money for you?

I think it’s a little bit slower because we don’t have the lunch crowds that we had down on the Riverwalk, where we were feeding so many professionals lunches and getting them breakfasts as well. Here, we are getting people who are getting coffee on the way to work or I get a number of people walking down from their residences to get a cup of coffee and then go home, so I don’t do as big of a lunch crowd as I did at the other place. But the coffee is getting more and more popular, and the breakfast sandwiches are starting to grow. That’s the nice part of that.

Prescription for what ails us It is indeed possible to get bad publicity. Not all pub is good pub.

Case in point—Ferguson, Missouri.

Who’d ever heard of this burg? And now, after our recent crash course introduction, I have to journalistically conclude that my first impression is not exactly Sandals-esque. Town appears to have an issue or two. Then again, what town doesn’t?

That’s when Bruce Van Dyke’s 32,594th dream kicked in, taking troubled Ferguson and folding it into—a fantasy screenplay. The screenplay of the new movie of the life of James Brown, inspired by Get On Up, mentioned last week in This Space. In this new flick, it just so happens that The Godfather is scheduled to have a show in St. Louis this week, and this is the version of James who is positively a freaky force of nature with his band in the early ’70s. The Minister of the New Heavy Funk, and this shit is down. The band gets stone cold wicked all night long, featuring incendiary jams that are relentless,

What about evenings? Midtown has a huge kind of hipster evening crowd around.

Is there anything else we should talk about?

I like how Midtown has grown up. I like to see all the variety that’s coming down here.

I like that. I like how it brings people to the corner because there’s a lot of stuff going on here. I’m glad I’m a part of that. Ω

thing—encourage and exhort the players a little as they take their solos and stuff. But then, as the final solo winds down, JB will make his play. Feelin’ the band locked in, James slowly begins to raise his hands over his head. Slowly, with a real sly, smartass grin on his face while he’s doin’ it. Hands up, don’t shoot!” Within a couple of minutes of this brand new torrid communal funk, 16,000 people in the St. Louis Music Palace are gettin’ it on, hands dancin’ in the sky, and makin’ a party out of a bummer, making a wake out of a funeral, makin’ a craze out of crazy. Ω

merciless, and capable of revving up pure crantastabules of raw funk that have been unseen and unfelt ever since the Ragin’ Nubian Maniacs blew it up at Caligula’s Caboose one night in downtown Rome a couple of thousand years ago. Since then, nothing has come along to touch that legendary and hallowed night in terms of planet-threatening seismic funk events. Not until this night with JB and the Boys in St. Louis.

In this dream scene, in the middle of the first set, James turns the band loose a little; lets ’em wander off and get into a groove somewhere. He knows that, sooner or later, that groove is gonna get pretty good. That’s what he’s hopin’ for, because tonight, he’s got a little surprise for everybody when the jam starts to make it. When that jam starts to jell, and the place begins to burn as one on point soul power ultra force, James is gonna be ready. He’s gonna do his usual

Nugget Rib Cook-off will run Wednesday, August 27, through Monday, September 1, 2014. This must-attend culinary, music and craft festival is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday. Admission is free!

More than 500,000 visitors and 100 tons of ribs were served in 2013. The wide variety of activities within the event, including the Nugget World Rib Eating Championship, a carnival area with rides and activities, and top-notch entertainment – not to mention the best BBQ in the country – all come together to draw thousands of people to Victorian Square every Labor Day weekend.

Similar large crowds are expected for 2014. Twenty-three of the country’s most decorated and talented rib cookers will feed event goers, while competing for a total cash purse of $14,500 and the title of “Best in the West” – a designation many cookers consider to be the ultimate prize in high-volume competitive BBQ. Last year, Famous Dave’s Bar-B-Que was the top winner, their third time winning including the 2006 and 2007 top prizes at the event.

Another top honor- the 2013 People’s Choice Award was given to Chicago BBQ Company.

Co-owner Lee Rice was looking through newspaper ads for a car when he found himself looking through the personal ads, one of which caught his eye - about a sassy redhead who soon became his wife and partner, Donna Rice.
