A chance encounter

We’re not really short

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I don’t know if I’m coming or going. I write this on the day our Biggest Little Best of Northern Nevada came out. In that weird deadline-temporal-fugue state, you’ll be reading this Editor’s Note beginning the day the extra newsprint copies get taken away.

In years past, the day it came out was always both a triumph and a failure. A triumph because it’s such a major undertaking, just getting it on the street was a major undertaking. A failure because there would always be a deluge of calls from people who believed they should have won, or from businesses where we got a phone number or apostrophe wrong.

But today, and it’s not yet noon, I have yet to receive an angry email or phone call. So that’s the going. The coming is that I’m hip deep in reporting the next Fatal Encounters piece.

This one is about the psychological, financial, emotional effects on officers who kill in the line of duty.

The coming and going is not as unrelated as you might guess. In fact, our Best of Northern Nevada was part of the inspiration for the Fatal Encounters series. One of the glories and frustrations of working for a small local newspaper is that it’s hard to do an in-depth examination of anything.

Way back when, before I became editor, investigative reporting used to be my personally most rewarding work.

So last year, I decided if we could marshal the complicated organization to do our Best of Northern Nevada, then for one year, I could also apply that sort of effort to something less frivolous.

Police violence is an issue that’s growing across the country, and I thought if we could get ideas about training, protocol and outcomes into the national dialogue, maybe our little RN&R could make a difference beyond our stature. Spreading it out episodically was simply the strategy to keep from putting off readers by focusing on one thing too intensely for too long.

We’ll see. We’ve already got quite a bit of national recognition. Maybe we’ve helped.

Thanks for printing my letter a couple of weeks ago! I feel honored. If you find yourself short of letters: Weird Al is great! Suffering from a family drama produced and created by my child, I turned to Al Yankovic for solace, and it was forthcoming in a form all can realize if they are partly weird like I am. First was his “Foiled,” parodying “Spoiled,” in which he summarizes his plan for placing an aluminum foil over his head to prevent his brain waves getting into the atmosphere and being killed by a governmental drone attack by the head of our CIA. Secondly, he pretends to be a drum major, heading out onto the playing field of a football team with his band, singing to the opposing team, telling them how stupid and weak they are; i.e. the German soccer team could have assembled and sang, “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina,” in that they won the world title. (Wonder if this would have interested Ann Coulter, conservative columnist who is bored by soccer?)

Feel free to add, subtract, or even write the same letter twice if you still have empty space.

Hot-blooded Re “Corporations are people, just like us” (Left Foot Forward, July 10): I agree with Sheila Leslie. The Hobby Lobby decision allows closelyheld corporations to potentially claim religious exemption from covering any medical treatment. Some “people” have religious objections extending to in vitro fertilization. Try paying for that benefit out-of-pocket. What about “people” whose religion prohibits any medical treatment? When medical treatment is an “out-of-pocket” expense, the cost can be prohibitive.

According to a New York Times June 30 article, “How Hobby Lobby ruling could limit access to birth control,” an IUD implantation and follow-up care cost a minimum of $1,000. Even if an employee manages the four-figure bill, Hobby Lobby might have religious objections to her using sick-leave.

Re “Or, do unto others” (Letters to the Editor, July 17): The fourth article of the U. S. Constitution states, “credit shall be given in each state.” There is more, but by choosing carefully which words I use, I can make any hare-brained point. Fred Hinners’ partial quote from Thessalonians proves my assertion.

Is Hinners not getting enough freebies from the feds? What an individual (or commune) work for and save should be theirs without some benefit-sucking drone taking away their hard-earned treasures.

His misrepresentations are reprehensible but typical of partially educated individuals who would rather destroy what others have than to actually work to support themselves. If you insist on talking out of context, sooner or later we’ll hear B. Bunny stating, “Ehh, what a maroon.”

teacher can pick a time for the assessment when the student is ready to succeed and observe their performance to verify that it correlates with the student’s normal classroom ability. It is usually a very accurate assessment vehicle. The standardized testing that is used to evaluate each individual student’s learning in the other areas of the curriculum is not as accurate and their results are often misleading.

There are many reasons for poor test performance. Unfortunately, it is the standardized testing that determines Nevada’s national ranking and will in all probability determine the fate of zoom schools. We do need to allow more teacher time per student. Zoom schools show the way. We also need to expand our measurements of learning to include additional assessments, like the reading level assessments.

Standardized testing is not the whole answer. We need a paradigm shift in order to succeed in education.

hoist the red flag of reality check, to ask the “Yeah but ...” questions before a photon torpedo was launched into the court of public opinion.

In these situations the organization contends with the classic quandary of balancing advice from the legal side versus the communications strategist. In a crisis, the astute PR type will hopefully lean toward full exposure, explanation if a mistake was made and a promise to do what it takes to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

But the lawyers warn that contrition, or exposure of a mistake, can be construed as an admission of guilt in a potentially expensive lawsuit.

What we can learn from this curious case of Mr. Martinez is that context does matter and in this day and age the communication counselor may be as important as the legal one.

For the community and the media folk, the school district is an important element of our collective psyche—and it shouldn’t take this crisis of confidence to point that out.

News coverage should be more rigorous and circumspect, voters need to pay more attention, and at minimum the upcoming election should warrant as much limelight as the mayor/council races. Day-to-day, more people in this community are personally touched by or in touch with their schools than they are with any city-county government, and matter how much we beat our breasts over this issue we will move on; teachers will still teach, students will still be students and school lunch will be served around noon. Ω

Shouldn’t the Constitution formalize equality?

I asked three women in their 20s if they knew what the ERA was. One said “No,” the next said “The what?” and the third guessed “Earned Run Average.” It was amusing but sad.

Women of a certain age remember the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) quite vividly. We grew up by during the feminist era, and the Sheila Leslie politics of change inspired us. We thought the ERA was a giant step towards equality and freedom, along with reproductive rights and breaking the glass ceiling of politics and employment.

The wording of the constitutional amendment was succinct and just.

It made sense. “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” But it was not to be. Thirty-eight states needed to ratify the ERA by 1979, and it came up three short.

The United States is hardly a constitutional leader on behalf of its female citizens. As Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has pointed out, “Every Constitution

written since the end of World War II includes a provision that men and women are citizens of equal stature.

Ours does not.”

During the ’70s, Phyllis Schlafly was ubiquitous, warning the ERA would mean women could be drafted into combat duties. Alimony and child support would be eliminated.

And she wasn’t above using the specter of shared public bathrooms to frighten women into the opposition camp.

The ERA was never ratified in Nevada but not for lack of effort. In 1975, the Assembly passed it, but it died in the Senate. In 1977, Lt. Gov. Bob Rose broke a tied vote to ensure passage in the Senate, only to see it fail in the Assembly.

A background paper prepared by the Legislative Counsel Bureau in 1977 reveals the paternalistic thinking of that time, stating it “will take away rights and privileges which are important to women and substitute additional unwanted responsibilities. In their (opponents’) opinion, passage of ERA will deny women

their present superior position in the home and family and remove legislation which protects women.”

In recent years, Assemblymember Kathy McClain, D-Las Vegas, who led the effort to have Nevada ratify the ERA, spearheaded legislation in 2005 and 2009, but the idea never caught on.

No votes were even taken.

Fast forward to 2014 as ratification is on the table once again. State Sen. Pat Spearman, D-North Las Vegas, who chairs the Committee on Legislative Operations and Elections, has requested a Senate Joint Resolution to ratify the ERA in the 2015 legislative session. It needs a simple majority of both houses to pass and cannot be vetoed by the governor.

Although the Congressional deadline for ratification expired long ago, there is legislation pending in Washington to set a new timeframe although action in the states is needed to bring the issue to the forefront of a stalled Congress.

Nevada could become the first

state in the 21st century to boldly pass the ERA, a move that would partially redeem our slow crawl towards marriage equality.

What is there to be afraid of, really?

In today’s political climate, ERA opponents are sticking with the “meddling federal government” argument, invoking the issue of states’ rights, appealing to Nevadans’ libertarian side. But without the enforcement arm of the federal government, the concise words of equal rights will hold little ability to promote the economic security that comes from equal pay for equal work.

It really boils down to whether we believe in the core principle of equality. As Spearman recently told the Las Vegas Review-Journal: “It’s time for us to say unequivocally that equal rights are just equal rights.

There is no caveat. There is no asterisk. There is no exception.” Ω

The EPA gets it right, for once Even a stopped analog watch is right twice a day. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took time off from destroying the jobs of poor Appalachians in the coal industry and regulating puddles on a ranch as “navigable waterways” to propose new regulations that could help jump by Brendan Trainor start the nuclear power industry and even Nevada’s Yucca Mountain nuclear waste depository.

The EPA is considering raising its radiation exposure limits by 350 times. While this may sound scary to some, it is actually sensible. Strict regulations during the Fukushima nuclear power plant incident in Japan triggered the evacuation of 130,000 residents. Over 1,600 elderly and sick Japanese died as a result of the evacuation, while no one died from the actual incident.

The problem is that environmental regulations have become more onerous as our technological ability to measure increasingly microscopic levels of contamination has increased. Sophisticated environmental tests can detect radiation

and pollution at levels not detected even a decade ago. New technologies that could have made the Gulf oil spill cleanup cheaper and faster were banned because they left a microscopic 15 parts per million of oil in the water, an amount not even detectable until recently.

The cost of these regulations is lost jobs, productivity and higher prices in our poor economic environment that hurts both workers and consumers. Cleaning up the first 90 percent of pollution is relatively cheap and effective. But now that pollution can be measured and regulated down to infinitesimal levels, removing the last 10 percent can be astronomically costly. The EPA asserts its mandate does not require them to do economic cost-benefit analysis. The agency has been under increasing criticism over regulations that take risk aversion to ridiculous limits without considering economic tradeoffs that do more actual harm than the minute levels of pollution can. Over-regulation kills, because inefficient mandates on economic

activity lower the standard of living for everyone, putting the most vulnerable people at risk.

The opposition to Yucca Mountain is based on these old regulations. If the EPA regulations that mandate radiation be as “low as reasonably possible” can be changed to “as high as reasonably safe,” there could be a revival of nuclear power. Extreme environmentalists would no longer have government backing for their absurd claim that no level of radiation is safe. We are constantly surrounded by natural low level radiation that does no harm.

In fact low levels of radiation can have positive health benefits. If the regulations are loosened, it could upgrade Yucca Mountain’s safety rating as a storehouse of low-level waste. Worries about shipping low-level waste to the site could be downgraded. California’s San Onofre nuclear plant could come back on line, providing carbon-free energy to Southern California and Nevada.

Freedom demands common sense. Unfortunately, bureaucracies often put mission creep and expansion of their power over a duty to make reasonable regulations for the public good. Let’s hope the Environmental Persecution Agency moderates its regulations and permits to more reasonable levels of radiation, sulfur emissions and other targets of its crusade to scrub every microscopic speck of dirt from the earth. Progressives often have a desire for petty orderliness and cleanliness with a puritanical obsession that mirrors the obsession with purity and hierarchical authority you can find in conservatives. When these factions organize the instruments of state coercion to impose their values on one another, the results can be nasty for everyone.

How about a diverse society not constantly organized for political battle but rather for personal choice?

A freed up world becomes cleaner and more efficient without the need for state coercion. Ω

Drought watch A couple of days of rain does not a drought defeat.

Mormon Crickets—which are actually katydids, not crickets—are appearing around the state for the first time in several years, fostered by the drought. The same with bark beetles, and damage from such insects is a risk in some of the state’s most beautiful places, like Lamoille Canyon and Jarbidge.

The white band on the wall that surrounds Lake Mead, reflecting its falling level, is now 130 feet tall. The lake is at its lowest level since it was created by the construction of Hoover Dam. A NASA water scientist, Jay Famiglietti, told Arizona’s Desert Sun that the problem goes beyond the drought—that the Colorado River Basin has lost enormous amounts of groundwater—but that the drought is certainly a factor.

The impact of the drought on Nevada is getting wide attention, mostly recently in an Al Jazeera piece on a new milk processing plant in Churchill County that is troubled because of the length of the drought.

Fox feted Lawson Fox, general manager for nearly a quarter century of Reno’s KTVN, received the lifetime achievement award of the Nevada Broadcasters Association on Aug. 9.

Broadcasting tends to be a job jumper’s field, with its folks moving from market to market around the nation, seldom becoming involved in each community. Fox has been an exception to that pattern. He is a member of Reno South Rotary and has served on the board of Renown Health.

Bundy aids grazing reform Cliven Bundy’s tantrum over his unpaid grazing fees has accomplished one thing—there are more people paying attention to how low the fees are for ranchers grazing livestock on public lands.

Credo, a liberal telephone services company, sends out letters in its customers’ names each month to their members of Congress. Two issues each month are offered.

In July, Credo sent out letters urging increases in grazing fees. All customers had to do was check a box on their phone bills.

Studies have indicated that federal grazing fees are well below competitive market prices. That’s because Congress, instead of the executive agencies, sets the fee level, which does not cover the cost of damage to the land. Ranchers respond that they make improvements to the land that increase its value.

With ranchers agitating to get wild horses off “their” range, American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign director Suzanne Roy put out a statement saying, “The hyper-focus on mustang numbers is a concerted effort to scapegoat wild horses and distract attention away from the massive level livestock grazing that is occurring on our public lands at great expense to the environment, wildlife (including wild horses) and taxpayers, who subsidize the below-market grazing fees that ranchers enjoy.”

“The biggest thing to understand here is that the grazing fee is not a cost-recovery fee,” BLM spokesperson Tom Gorey told the Fiscal Times. “If you want to blame Congress for that, go ahead, because they created the formula that we use.”

It’s spilling over onto the state level, too. In Idaho officials are considering raising fees for grazing on state lands. Not surprisingly, a ranching lobbyist, Jared Brackett, told the Twin Falls Times News that ranchers might then switch entirely to grazing on those bargain-rate federal lands.

Pristine The Wilderness Act at 50 “It’s a work of joy,” said Marjorie Sill of Reno.

“There’s so much negative going on in the world right now. I love the by positive.”

Dennis Myers She was referring to her ongoing work on the Wilderness Act, a piece of federal legislation that turns 50 years old on Sept. 3. In 1964, when it was enacted by Congress, Sill and her scientist husband Richard Sill had been working on getting the bill passed since 1958.

For its first quartercentury, the Wilderness Act was all but ignored in Nevada The Sparks Heritage Museum, assisted

by Friends of Nevada Wilderness, last week opened an exhibit on the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act. It will be in place until Oct. 4. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 adults, children and members free.

When enacted, it broke U.S. policy away from merely “conservation” of the land. Conservationists believed in protecting the land for use—for dams or parks or reservoirs or irrigation projects to be used by municipalities or campers, hunters, and others. But the Wilderness Act protected the land in its pristine condition, with no specific use in mind except to create “an area where the earth and community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.”

It’s a notion the famous conservationists like Gifford Pinchot and Nevada’s Francis Newlands would not have understood. And there were many conservationists who opposed it.

When Sill began working on the wilderness issue, she lived in New Mexico and spent time in Washington, D.C., lobbying her senator, Clinton Anderson, a former secretary of agriculture in the Truman administration.

“My husband and I went up to see him to encourage his participation,” Sill recalled this week. “He was a very strong supporter of wilderness.”

Sill attended a lot of wilderness conferences in those years, and there was considerable opposition to the concept in and out of Congress. But in 1964, just two months before the 1964 election, the bill passed.

It provided for a legal category of land “protected and managed so as to preserve its natural conditions and which (1) generally appears to have been affected primarily by the forces of nature, with the imprint of man’s work substantially unnoticeable; (2) has outstanding opportunities for solitude or a primitive and unconfined type of recreation; (3) has at least 5,000 acres of land or is of sufficient size as to make practicable its preservation and use in an unimpaired condition; and (4) may also contain ecological, geological, or other features of scientific, educational, scenic, or historical value.”

The Sills had moved to Nevada in 1959 when Richard, a physicist who had previously worked for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Lick Observatory, took a position at the University of Nevada. Marjorie and her husband continued their work on environmental issues. On arrival,

Marjorie Sill quickly learned the local terrain of the wilderness issue.

When the measure was passed, Nevada’s U.S. senators—middle-ofthe-road Democrats Alan Bible and Howard Cannon—were supportive of the wilderness concept, but its only U.S. House member, right wing Democrat Walter Baring, was not. As a result Nevada, for the first quarter century of the Act’s life, got only a token amount of wilderness—64,830 acres in northeast Nevada near the Idaho border called the Jarbidge Wilderness Area. It was nothing if not successful—in 2005, a project by the Center for International Earth Science and the Wildlife Conservation Society to identify the places on the planet that are least disturbed by humankind put Jarbidge Wilderness at the top of the list. But still, as other states were creating millions of acres of wilderness land, Nevada was not.

In 1972, Baring was defeated and replaced by a Republican for a term, then by a moderate Democrat who called himself “Mr. Minerals.”

Nothing much changed on wilderness. But change was coming. The Sills were emblematic of what was happening in Nevada. Newcomers, not natives, were becoming dominant.

In 1981, the state received its second U.S. House seat. The two House districts were split between Las Vegas and the rest of the state, and urban residents tend to be more supportive of environmentalism than small county residents. In addition, the state was now mostly made up of people who were not born in the state.

Previous approaches to land and water issues were falling away.

Elected to the new southern House seat in the 1982 election was Harry Reid. He was only one member of the delegation, but he made himself felt, winning creation of a Great Basin National Park that had been blocked for decades. Meanwhile, elected to the House in the north was Republican Barbara Vucanovich, who did not care for wilderness areas. “She told me there was no place in Nevada where she couldn’t drive her RV,” Marjorie Sill said.

On moving up to the Senate in 1987, Reid was replaced in the House by another pro-environment Democrat in the southern House seat, James Bilbray. Then in 1989, they were joined by Richard Bryan, another Democratic senator. In just a few short years, the state’s congressional delegation had gone from mostly Republican to mostly Democratic.

In that year, a major new Nevada wilderness measure was passed. It was preceded by a trip to Nevada by a D.C. contingent headed by U.S. Rep. John Seiberling of Ohio. For Easterners who thought of Nevada as a big desert where unattractive federal projects like ammo dumps could be sited, the visit was a revelation. They saw stunning vistas in places like Jarbidge and Arc Dome. Vucanovich wished the trip had never happened.

“There was a gathering at the end of the trip, and Seiberling said he ‘has seen some beautiful areas here in Nevada,’” Sill recalled. By this time she had been joined by others. Until then, the Sierra Club had taken the lead, but state supporters wanted a Nevada group, and Friends of Nevada Wilderness was formed in 1984 (“Friends of Nevada Wilderness turns 25,” RN&R, June 4, 2009), putting the face of locals on the issue and creating political pressure for more wilderness.

In 1989, Seiberling, over Vucanovich’s opposition, won House approval of Reid’s Nevada Wilderness Act, hiking Nevada wilderness to 700,000 acres, including a doubling of the original Jarbidge Wilderness. Vucanovich— herself a transplant to Nevada— tended to blame the expansion of wilderness on Easterners, but the truth was that a different group of Nevadans, transplants like herself, were supplanting earlier leaders like Paul Laxalt who had been born in the state and were oriented to employing the land for whatever human uses were possible, certainly

including mining. (Nor should it be overlooked that Bryan, Bilbray and Reid were raised in Nevada and Vucanovich was not.)

Even with the 1989 act, Nevada was still one of only two Western states whose wilderness acreage was not in seven digits. Reid began a strategy of expanding wilderness a county at a time, an odd plan that was later imitated by a Utah senator. Reid also employed a process he was using at the time to negotiate an accord on Truckee River water, of pulling people from many groups together to work out an agreement. In most counties it worked well, though in Lyon County a rancorous 2008 fight occurred when groundwork was not well prepared.

There were many fights—in Washoe it was over Black Rock/High Rock desert acreage—but the process helped reduce ill will.

Some wilderness advocates worry that Reid, on his way to becoming a D.C. wheeler-dealer, started giving up too much on wilderness, cutting compromises that undercut its whole purpose. In the case of the Black Rock designation, language was included that allows the use of vehicles, aircraft, bikes, mining, and special events like Burning Man, so the protestors who used signs like “Traitor Dick [Bryan] and Dirty Harry [Reid]” may have exaggerated their case a bit.

Nevada has long since passed the seven-digit mark. There are now 2,056,545 acres of wilderness in Nevada. Another similar amount is being studied for designation. Ω

Save the lake Labor Day weekend of geotourism events at Lake Tahoe When you think about Lake Tahoe, what do you think of? Skiing, gaming, partying, boating and beach days? And how do you get there and get around the lake?

Drive? This is exactly what nonprofit organization Sustainable Tahoe is by Sage Leehey trying to change with Tahoe Expo on Aug. 30 and 31.

Executive director Jacquie Chandler wants to change the way people s age l@ think about the lake. She thinks the Tahoe Expo can help do this by demonnews review.c om strating what a geotourism-based economy could look like in the region for one day a year. This is the third year the organization has hosted this event.

“It’s one day until it’s every day,” Chandler said. “[Geotourism is] visitation that does no harm. It’s stewardship of the geography, the art, the culture, the heritage, the environment and the local well-being.”

She explained that the current “visitor’s menu” for Lake Tahoe—which includes the activities listed above—is too limited. She wants to expand it into a geotourism economy that benefits every party involved, including visitors, business owners and the environment.

“If you had to live off the water in your bathroom sink, would you be careful what you put on the edge of your sink?” Chandler said. “Well, that’s Tahoe. We’re not careful about what we put on the edge of the mountains.”

The Expo will have about 20 “geotracks”—fun and meaningful, lowcarbon footprint activities that connect to Lake Tahoe. They are located throughout the region on both days and include activities like yoga on standup paddleboards, a tour to learn about our feathered friends at Spooner Lake, and an electric bicycle test drive and tour to monitor storm drain water.

These activities are located near bus stops so participants can help reduce their carbon footprint. Biking, hiking and water transit are options, too.

What both Hara and Chandler are most excited for, though, is at the event’s center stage at Sand Harbor from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.: a Washoe laka’lelup. This will be a gathering of Washoe people with various cultural activities, like making moccasins, rabbit blankets and arrowheads, and ceremonies to honor the water throughout the day. The Washoe have not done this kind of ceremony at Sand Harbor since 1840. This event will help the Washoe, too, because they’re racing against the clock to teach their ceremonies, arts and crafts and culture to the younger generations.

“A long time ago, and even today, our coming together as a people is part of who we are as a distinct people and as a community of people with related identities,” said Washoe Tribe language teacher Herman Fillmore. “Many times we come together for big ‘gatherings,’ but often these are done when it is time—when things are meant to be—not as an event.”

The Washoe are the original guardians of the lake because the area is their homeland. Chandler believes this is “a rare opportunity for the past to serve the future” because we need their guidance to help preserve the lake.

There will also be a variety of performances on the Shakespeare stage at Sand Harbor starting at 3 p.m. on Aug. 30. There will be plays and dance and musical performances that each tie into the performer’s love for the water. Ω OPINION

So, you’re itching to get outside and away from civilization. With fall quickly approaching and school starting, time is getting short for 2014.

Don’t forget the Spatula We wanted to feel insignificant. And few things dwarf us mere humans like the redwoods.

The towering trees—as tall as a 35-story building—exist all over California. But Humboldt County is known for holding the grandest and oldest. We reserved campgrounds at Richardson Grove State Park, the southernmost option still technically within the county.

Disclaimer: I’m not much of a camper. My parents weren’t very outdoorsy. My friends in college weren’t, either.

My proud Eagle Scout of a camping partner chose the campsite, but I don’t think either of us expected such luxury.

Running water, sure. But such impeccably clean bathrooms? With intense diagrams explaining how to flush the notcomplicated toilet? And recycling? Showers?

Sure enough, the other campers seemed keen on the luxury.

There were enormous, multiroom tents and elaborate stoves everywhere. And children. I overheard one adorable little boy tell his mom, “I think that tree is old.”

We thought we were getting crazy by bringing a large cooler with beer and cheese and stuff. Alas, we forgot a spatula. Our burgers fell into the fire, and our calzones escaped their foil encasings. Luckily, the Eagle Scout was prepared with a backup supply of salami. Four meals later, I have zero interest in eating salami for the foreseeable future.

The mosquitoes devoured me each night.

We saw a rattlesnake. As we tried to fall asleep at 9:30 p.m.—don’t judge—we could hear what must have been a rave at a neighboring campsite. I felt old, lame. Another neighbor gave us a half-bottle of port that read “Dumpster Diver 2013.” It was sweet, syrupy and delicious.

saved the weekend from failure. The park’s visitor center sits in the middle of a cathedrallike grove of redwoods. Their stark uniformity gave them an air of nobility, with the late afternoon light creating lovely refractions in between.

A 4-mile hike brought us through two more impressive groves and up an ear-popping 1,000 feet. I sweated disgusting amounts, but I don’t exactly hit the gym. I think most physically fit people would call it “moderate.”

What was most astounding about that hike, and subsequent hikes, was the complete silence and emptiness. We came across one other couple on the trails over the course of the entire weekend.

Later, we realized that the hundreds of campers were at the swimming hole on the Eel River. In this drought, it was more like a dipping hole, but still entirely pleasant in the heat. Though without children—or floaties— we quickly felt out of place.

By day three, we were ready for a change of scenery. Since we were already so far north, an extra hour to loop around the coast felt more than worthwhile. Highway 1 wound through forests, rugged cliffs and 200-person towns.

Cars frequently stopped to admire the impossibly blue ocean and mysterious North Coast fog.

We ended our detour in Fort Bragg, at the Glass Beach. Legend has it that residents would dump bags of household garbage onto the beach in the early 20th century. After decades of waves crashing onto shore, the trash has broken down into sea glass. Lots of people come and collect the prettiest, brightly colored pieces of glass, to the point that white and brown dominate the current landscape.

Still, that mandatory long walk on the beach feels way more epic when said beach is made of glass.

of less than two-dozen spots, but they have all the frills (fire grills, picnic tables, toilets, water), and the nearby 15-mile trail is great for a weekend adventure. Plus, rock jumping in the Yuba is legendary.

beRlin-ichthYosauR state PaRk: This old ghost town is

probably the only reason to head out of Reno and into central Nevada. Named after sea-monster fossils, the camping is cheap, and it’s open year-round.

salt Point state PaRk:

This busy car-camping destination, about 95 miles north of San Francisco, is great for families and folks longing for a little bit of nature and a dose of the Pacific Ocean. Visitors can sleep amid the trees, then trek along the coast during the day.

This is the only (legal) place to camp within the city of San Francisco. Atop a hill in the Presidio near the Golden Gate Bridge, it’s cheaper than a hotel or Airbnb—but there’s a curfew. Not for party animals.

Point ReYes national seashoRe:

Camping here, just north of San Francisco on the coast, is like snagging good seats at a Giants-Dodgers game in AT&T Park: You’re going to have to pay and plan ahead with a reservation.

But it’s worth it—just be certain to get one of the coastal campgrounds, such as Sky Camp.

There are a lot of great reasons to go camping, but one of the best is male bondage. Not bondage in the sexy sense, but bondage in the sense of a bunch of dudes getting together in the wilderness, drinking too much, stripping down, piling into a dirty wet hole in the ground and talking about their feelings.

I went camping recently with a group of friends who I don’t get to see that often. We eventually settled on renting a cabin at Mono Hot Springs, deep in the Sierra Nevada, almost five hours southeast of Sacramento.

I got a late start, so it was after dark by the time I was driving up California State Route 168. It was kind of an intense drive, so I was relieved when I finally reached the hot-springs area, tucked in a little valley, and found my friends—Ali, Alec, Dave, Mike and Ross—who immediately handed me a much-needed beer.

We hung out around the fire for a bit, imbibing, before trekking out on foot to find some of the natural hot springs. We crossed over a little river and followed a path over rough and wet terrain. After a bit of hunting, we found a pool large enough to accommodate the six of us.

Just before stripping down and climbing in, Mike, a gracious cat if ever there was one, stumbled and fell fully clothed into a nearby stream of very muddy water. He fell in headfirst with the frightened, panicked yelp of a cow about to stampede.

The pool was more like a comfortable bathtub than the sulfurous scald some hotspring enthusiasts might crave. But it was large enough for all us to stand comfortably with the water up to our necks as we stared up at the stars, undiminished by light pollution.

When it was time to go, Mike ran out and grabbed what he assumed were his muddy clothes, and then he started running back to our cabin, buck naked, carrying a pile of random clothes, including, as it turned out, my pants. So I walked back to the cabin like a proper shirtcocker, balls gently caressed by the summer breeze.

The next morning, I checked out the place a little more, and it’s an actual resort. There were several cabins like ours, as well as tent camping, a small general store and restaurant, and a spa building. There were a lot of people around, including families with younger kids. I was

surprised to find so many signs of civilization considering how remote and treacherous the road in had seemed.

The surrounding area was impressive.

Between the John Muir and Ansel Adams wilderness areas, it’s the kind of scenic High Sierra beauty that stirs the frontier spirit within even the most hardened urbanite. We checked out more of the dozen or so hot springs in the area. None of them were mind-blowing in temperature or water quality, but they were all decent.

That night, we sat around the campfire. At one point, in the middle of discussion, I noticed somebody at a nearby cabin flashing their flashlight in our general direction, a friendly shut-the-fuck-up gesture. It reminded me that although it felt like we were out in the wild, bonding with our cavemen ancestors and staring down the fire, we were actually surrounded by people, most of whom were trying to sleep.

So, yeah, not necessarily the best place for drunken male bonding. We had a great time, but we might have traumatized some innocent bystanders by walking around with no pants.

no. 2 on the moon Is this what a lunar landing feels like? Only wearing a 40-pound camping pack with a pint of whiskey in it instead of an astronaut suit?

I sometimes ask that when I arrive at one of Desolation Wilderness’ many alpine lakes. Such is the case with Lake Aloha, just southwest of South Lake Tahoe—there aren’t any trees near the water, just massive, monochromatic granite expanses, which give off a serious moon vibe.

Aloha is one of Desolation’s bigger lakes, and it’s a perfect entry-level camp spot for a debut foray into the 60,000-plus-acre region, which is located at the base of the Sierra Nevada. From the lake, you can hike for days, hopping through the wild and diving off jumping rocks.

Part of the fun of visiting Desolation each summer is figuring out which water spot is your favorite. Is it the sleek rock jumping at Fontanilis? Or venturing off-trail to the secluded Lower Velma, what with its Lord of the Rings cliff drops?

Unfortunately, this is the outdoors, so there are rules. Desolation is not car camping.

You will need to dig a hole to shit. Then, you

will wipe your ass with BYO toilet paper and haul it out in a Ziploc bag. Bear canisters and water-purifying pumps are more important than your iPod. And forget about that campfire: It’s a $300-plus fine.

But let’s focus on the positive. Every summer, my crew of friends enters Desolation for a handful of nights. Last year, three of us started near the more touristy Emerald Bay entrance, via the Maggie’s Peak trail. The switchbacks out the gate are enough to send you back to your car’s A/C, but the route is generally less strenuous than the bay’s other entrance at Eagle Lake. If you don’t want to have knee surgery at 50, this is a good thing.

Echo Lake is less busy and, if you’re a baby, you can take a boat cab to cut off 2 miles of the jaunt. Wright’s Lake is a shorter day-trip.

And, if you really want to crisscross the entire Desolation expanse, consider entering through north Loon Lake—which is not part of the wilderness area—then head toward Spider Lake to enter the valley. Bonus points for anyone who knocks out that multiday trip; I hope to do it one day.

My favorite memories of Desolation are the alpine lakes. That snowmelt water, those pop-up granite islands—swim out to one, take a nap, get lost in the silence.

Isolation has its place, but I do recommend Desolation in a group, especially for your first time. On a recent visit, we hiked the easy trail along Echo toward Aloha. After a few hours of midday sun face-melt, the trail gives way to cooler forest cover before descending onto

Aloha. Jumping into this lake after a killer hike is like diving into one of those freezers at Costco.

But don’t stay at Aloha too long. Keep on the trail for another 45 minutes—it has to be like trekking on the moon!—then tiptoe along the cliffs near Heather Lake and chill in the shade surrounding Susie Lake.

Our movie critic has had some wild times at the drive-in

A

fter a lot of research—two minutes on the internet—I’ve learned that there are fewer than 360 drive-ins left in the United States of America.

I’ve been writing these movie review things for 19 years now, and I’ve never really touched upon the topic of the drive-in movie theater.

Heck, I had only been to the El Rancho Drive-In once since 1994 (when I saw “Keaunu Reeves is Speed!”).

I did go last year to watch The Purge, and I don’t remember much about the experience other than the snack bar had a lot of waxy candies and the movie sucked ass.

So I decided to go back this summer and truly absorb the El Rancho experience.

Before I talk about that, I would like to reminisce a bit about drive-in movie viewing back in my home state of New York during the first half of my life. Some of those memories are nice and pleasant, and some … not so much.

Young Bobby Grimm goes to the drive-in While I’m sure my parents took me when I was a baby, my first real memory of attending the drive-in was for a double feature of American Graffiti and The Sting when I was 8 years old. I loved it. It was crazy. I was watching a movie in a car.

Despite my excitement, I fell asleep after American Graffiti and missed The Sting. My little sister Kathy managed to stay up the whole time, and she held that over my head throughout my adolescence. She kept talking about the fake blood capsule that Robert Redford bit at the end.

This really upset me.

The horror!

I lost my virginity at a drive-in under traumatic circumstances. It was 1986, and Police Academy 3: Back in Training was playing as my amateur sexual antics were on prominent display in the front seat of my ’73 Cadillac, parked right next to the damned snack bar.

Everything was viewable through my windshield, but it didn’t matter to the girlfriend. It was time to get the whole thing over with and commence sexual things, even if people were watching us.

There was finger pointing at my naked ass … there was laughter… and yet, because I was a teenaged hormonal monster, I finished the deed while looking over my shoulder in complete terror at the taunting passersby.

To this day, the mere sound of Bobcat Goldthwait’s screech causes a complete erection reversal. That

has nothing to do with the losing my virginity thing. He’s just really annoying.

The job In 1990, I did a stint working at a drive-in after graduating from college—hooray for college degrees!—somewhere near Plattsburgh, New York. My most vivid memory was cleaning the place up after the off-season and finding stuff like raccoons in the snack bar.

We played crap like Robocop 2 and Beaches. (Godammit … I hate that movie.) It was a relatively unpleasant experience for me in that I was broke, and the owner paid me by supplying a hotel room near the Canadian border. It was a flophouse occupied by Canadian refugees, prostitutes, bugs I never did quite identify, and a depressed me.

All of the drive-ins I frequented as a child through young adulthood are now closed.

El Rancho Drive-in I chose to attend El Rancho on the Monday night after Hot August Nights. I had a friend (we shall call her the Drive-In Ninja) all set to go with me. She was going to show me how to smuggle in my dog and all sorts of alcohol, shop for snacks, start a campfire, shoot off fireworks, boil lobsters, and view from the truck bed at the drive-in. She had a master plan.

Then it rained, and she blew me off, so I went all by myself.

I bought my ticket for Guardians of the Galaxy as droplets continued to spot my windshield. The place was pretty damned empty, compounding my sense of loneliness. I parked my car and made my trek to the snack bar.

I got a churro, some yesterday’s popcorn, a yucky hot dog, a pretzel, some Red Vines and a bottle of Sierra Mist. The folks working concessions were really nice. The food didn’t look great, but I kind of want the food at a drive-in to be a little trashy for some reason. It just feels right.

Yes … I sat alone at the El Rancho Drive-In, in the rain, watching Dane Cook voice an airplane.

BOB GRIMM was that stupid Pixar rip-off Planes: Fire & Rescue. Guardians was playing on two screens, but my attendant directed me to the screen that played the Dane Cook flick first. Since I hadn’t seen the film, I stuck it out and watched.

Yes … I sat alone at the El Rancho Drive-In, in the rain, watching Dane Cook voice an airplane.

I had to work in the morning so I left before the Guardians late show.

In truth, I didn’t get the full drive-in experience because you are supposed to stick it out for both features. Only pussies leave early.

I’ll go back to the El Rancho on a nicer night this summer, perhaps with the Drive-In Ninja. Maybe she’ll show me how to build a blanket fort while viewing movies in the out-of-doors.

Yes, rain and that rat bastard, Dane Cook, tainted my El Rancho experience. Still, it sure did beat the time my deflowering was observed by popcorn chomping Long Island monsters.

I will never forget their laughter viciously mocking me as Steve Guttenberg mugged aplenty on that gigantic, soon-to-be-extinct screen under a star-filled sky.

As my lonely self was waiting on my shriveled up hot dog, some kid was getting himself a soda. Out of nowhere, this kid turned around, faced me, and with a big grin on his face exclaimed, “Best place … ever!”

With these words, I drifted back to the innocent days before high school when going to the drive-in brought about that very same sentiment. The little dude put me in a good mood, and I didn’t feel so alone anymore.

Then his mom came and got him, quickly directing her son away from the strange dude lurking all by himself in the corner of the snack bar.

I got my food and drifted back to my truck, splashing in puddles along the way. The movie hadn’t started yet, so I settled in and sampled a little bit of everything I got. It was all pretty bad, but, once again, for some reason, I found this soothing. The pretzel was the best, followed by the churro and the popcorn. We will not speak of the hot dog again.

The previews started, and I tuned in my radio to the right station. Yes, I used to go to the drive-in back when you had those clumsy speakers on poles that you hung on your windows, your dad cursing as he tried to make them work. The radio sound, while not IMAX quality, was quite crisp.

A few minutes into the previews, I noticed some mean-looking guy walking toward my car from a great distance. As he got closer, he looked more and more pissed off. He didn’t come from any car, so I figured he either worked there or just felt like killing a random person at the drive-in on this rainy night.

As he drew closer, I could make out more of his bearded face, and he looked really deranged. Then, I realized I could actually see his face because I left my headlights on. I switched them off, and he returned to wherever the hell he came from.

So, the movie started and it wasn’t Guardians of the Galaxy; it

you can actually get a chemical burn (a.k.a. “Playa Foot”) if you’re not careful .

This will be one of the most unique & memorable experiences of your life. Use common sense, go with an open attitude, a list, be overprepared and your memories of the Playa will be those of good times, rather than those of nasty sunburns, chasing shade structures during a windstorm and lungs full of dust. When they say “radical self-reliance”, they mean it!

You might find people willing to “gift” you an item or two - if you forget something - but don’t rely on this. It’s much better to be the one in the position of gifting. The only things for sale on the Playa are ice and coffee, so get everything you need – and more – before you leave. Most of these items are available in grocery, sporting goods and surplus stores. Even the “big box” stores stock up on Playa goods this time of year, but we suggest you try locally-owned businesses first.

“I tried to capture these moments when you see someone or maybe a couple of people … and they’re kind of isolated against these huge structures that humans build,” said Domagala. “I’m fascinated that people are intelligent enough to build these structures. These are our cultural artifacts. Wherever people go, buildings will be erected eventually. Buildings are a dominant part of our everyday landscape.”

The show features different kinds of urban environments: narrow, old European streets, new, high-tech modern buildings, and dirty American alleyways, including some in Reno. One image features a Reno alley with the sign for the shuttered Old Reno casino. The alley is split evenly—half in shadow and half in light—and a newer building looms in the background, with a lone figure walking in the gap. Another Reno image features City Hall, a retooled bank building, the building reflecting clouds, as a lone individual sits in the nearby plaza in what appears to be quiet contemplation.

Domagala is originally from the Detroit area, but launched his photography career here in Reno. He was active in the local art scene, doing photography professionally, exhibiting his work, and serving on the city’s arts and culture commission, before moving to the Bay Area last year.

Much of his professional and commercial photography work is documenting architecture for architecture firms and other businesses.

“I really love architecture,” he said.

Most of the commercial work is focused on documenting specific buildings, the aesthetics of particular projects, with little regard to the surrounding buildings or the urban context. Any people in the photos are incidental or perhaps just present to demonstrate the scale of the building.

But in the context of People vs. Structure, each isolated person becomes a focus point for the viewer’s attention. By themselves, some of these photos would seem like photos of buildings, but the series showcases the contrast between people and buildings. Domagala said that this is partly why he primarily chose photographs with only one or two people in them.

“If there’s a crowd of people, it’s kind of a mass of humanity, and you lose a lot of that focus,” he said. “You’re not focusing on one person because there’s a crowd there.”

But when there’s only one person in a photograph, the human eye is naturally drawn toward the figure, even if that figure seems to be overwhelmed next to some massive man-made structure. Ω

In the neighborhood El Rincon 668 Greenbrae Drive, Sparks, 355-1569 When a friend calls and says he wants to take me to a small Salvadoran and Mexican restaurant because it has by Dave Preston the best chile rellenos in the valley, and he happens to be a restaurant owner himself—not Salvadoran or Mexican—I won’t argue.

When Ernesto and Estella Figueroa came to town from San Francisco almost two decades ago, all they wanted to do was open a nice little neighborhood place. This simple 40-seat casa comida in the Greenbrae Center, run by the family, fills that bill.

They serve breakfast ($5.49$8.99), and a combined lunch and dinner menu ($7.99-$12.99), most served with white rice, beans and handmade corn or flour tortillas. There are a dozen authentic Salvadoran items, like pupusas, thick, handmade corn tortilla filled with meat and/or cheese and/or rice ($1.69 ea.); yuca frita ($6.49); fried cassava—the starchy tuberous root of a tropical tree—topped with pork and cabbage salad; and salpicon ($8.49) chopped roast beef with beans and rice.

The pupusa revuelta ($1.69) was handmade and filled with beans, pork and cheese. It seemed to melt in my mouth with an inviting flavor of warm maize coming through, creating a savory, multi-textured, satisfying sensation to my taste buds.

Pasilla peppers are used for the delectable relleno ($8.99). The flavor is reminiscent of raisins and bell peppers, and there’s just enough heat to make it interesting but not overwhelm the dish. They use a combination of Monterey cheese—not Jack—and queso fresco, with its

mellow, creamy flavor and texture that complements spicy foods. It's made with a little egg batter, pan fried and then covered with a housemade red sauce with tomatoes, onion, bell peppers and Mexican spices. It lived up to my friend’s boast.

Estella wanted me to try the camarones a la diabla ($10.99).

These were shrimp about the size of a 50 cent piece cooked in a spicy red sauce and served with white rice and beans. She uses a Japanese dark red pepper, and roasts it, then chops it, and cooks it down with tomato and other spices to create a sauce with a nice bit of heat. The zip carried through my mouth and hung on to remind me why the word diabla describes the dish—devilishly hot.

Menudo ($6.99), sopa ($7.99), and tamales Salvadoreños ($1.50) are offered on the weekends.

I had a couple of other Salvadoran treats. Platanos ($5.49) are similar to bananas and are used specifically as a sweet treat. This fruit was simply panfried with a little oil, and the natural sugar caused the outside to create a caramelized crust yielding a warm, soft banana flavor inside, nice finish to the meal.

Next came a bebida ($2.75), a berry drink. This one was actually more of a fruit drink. It had fresh everything: pineapple, cantaloupe, apple, watermelon, and cashew apples.

Cashew apples go by the Spanish name marañón, and they can be made into juices, jams, and even a liqueur called fenny.

All these fruits are put into a blender with water, liquefied and then little chopped pieces of each fruit float on top. It was a meal in itself and extremely refreshing—not to mention the vitamins and fiber you get with drink. They offer plenty of other soft drinks ($1.75): Horchata—cinnamon rice milk—Jarritos, Mexican Coke and Pepsi—these are made with sugar instead of corn syrup—as well as two domestic ($2.50) and three Mexican bottled beers ($3) plus Regia ($6.50) beer from El Salvador.

There was a steady stream of folks in and out while we were there, and everyone seemed to know everyone.

The true neighborhood restaurant is frequented and treasured by locals. It feels essential to the fabric and soul of the area. That’s what the Figueroas wanted, and it feels like that’s what they have. Ω

Boyhood A lot can go wrong when you film a movie on and off for more than 12 years with the cast aging naturally. Cast members could die, the director could lose his drive and quit, etc.

Boyhood, writer-director Richard Linklater’s amazing cinematic undertaking, doesn’t have the ring of experimental or stunt filmmaking about it. It’s just a great looking, by terrifically acted, tremendously moving film Bob Grimm made progressively over 12 years.

It’s an amazing thing to see young Mason bgrimm@ newsreview.c om (Ellar Coltrane, who we first see set to the joyous strains of Coldplay’s “Yellow” on the soundtrack) go from a wide-eyed 5-year-old boy staring at the sky to an 18-year-old college student dealing with girls and big life decisions. It’s equally fascinating to watch Ethan Hawke, playing Mason’s father, go from Training Day Hawke to The Purge Hawke in the course of three hours.

We also see Linklater’s daughter Lorelei playing Samantha, Mason’s sister, and Patricia Arquette as Mom, putting in her best performance since she graced the screen as Alabama in True Romance. All of the performers go through beautiful and awkward stages, aging before our eyes without the aid of special effects makeup.

All of this would mean relatively little if it was at the service of a bad screenplay.

Happily, Linklater has delivered the sort of observational, honest, enlightening screenplay that made his School of Rock and Dazed and Confused such endearing films. While there have been great films about adolescence, family turmoil and growing up (Linklater having been the architect of a few), never before has one film captured the essence of “boyhood” quite like this.

Mason has three different dads in this movie, the first being his biological father played by Hawke. Hawke brings a bohemian charm to the well-meaning but somewhat flaky dad, basically a good man who didn’t have what it takes to last with Arquette’s mom. While he isn’t there every day, he remains an important force in Mason’s life.

As Mason’s first stepdad, Marco Perella delivers a chilling depiction of alcoholism, unlike any I have ever seen on screen. We first see him as Mom’s charming college professor, and ultimately see him in a visceral, frightening sequence involving a man out of control in front of his family.

Perella worked on the film for three years, and his snarky disintegration into alcoholic madness is deserving of Oscar consideration.

Arquette is brilliant as the mom who makes a few mistakes along the way—her third husband isn’t much better than the first two—but keeps on chugging. She has a breakdown scene when Mason heads off to college that I’m sure many moms can relate to. It’s fun to see both Hawke and Arquette at Mason’s high school graduation party. While they surely aren’t Coltrane’s real parents, they probably attained some sort of honorary aunt and uncle status, having known Coltrane most of his life.

And what of Coltrane as Mason? How did Linklater know he was casting such an interesting kid when he signed him up? Every moment that Coltrane spends on the screen feels real and possesses the sort of depth many actors can’t muster. I especially liked young Mason’s face when he was getting an unwanted haircut. Coltrane does a great job showing the pain and tragedy of a haircut no boy wants to display at school.

It must’ve been a crazy day when they wrapped shooting on Boyhood. A cast and crew working together on the same story for over 12 years hugs and says goodbye as the whole thing heads to post-production. The resulting product is one of amazing foresight, almost impossible visual consistency, and rewarding performances.

This is a movie that will only be made once. Nobody will ever pull anything like Boyhood off again. Linklater has made a permanent, monumental mark on cinematic history. Ω

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

to take down the entire universe, Quill finds himself in serious trouble. Events lead to his joining forces with a genetically enhanced Raccoon named Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper), a gigantic tree person thing named Groot (voice of Vin Diesel), an angry, musclebound alien named Drax (Dave Bautista) and an ass-kicking green woman named Gamora (Zoe Saldana). Together, they become the Guardians of the Galaxy, an unlikely troupe of mischievous outcasts that plays like the Avengers meets the Marx Brothers. The cast, buoyed by a spirited script co-written by Gunn, keeps things zippy and always funny.

Visually, the movie is a tremendous feat of special and makeup effects. If you see it in 3-D, you’ll be happy with the results.

The motion-capture apes take another step toward world domination in a sequel just as good as its predecessor, and certainly a step forward when it comes to pure, unadulterated ass-kicking ape action. The movie picks up 10 years after a well-meaning doctor played by James Franco first shot an experimental drug into a chimp and unintentionally initiated the end of the human race.

Caesar (Andy Serkis doing his motion-capture best) is leading a group of genetically modified apes in the redwoods near the Golden Gate Bridge. Life is good, and the humans have seemingly disappeared thanks to the Simian Flu brought on by the Franco character’s experiments. As it turns out, some humans have survived, led by Gary Oldman’s frustrated Dreyfus, who fears the humans will soon run out of fuel for their generators. There’s a chance for some hydraulic power via a dam in the woods, a dam that just happens to be near the apes compound. A band of humans led by Malcolm (Jason Clarke) sets out to repair the dam, stumbles upon the apes, and those apes aren’t happy to see them. Koba, an ape who figured prominently in the first film, returns, and he has no interest in a peaceful existence with humans. So, they fight, and they fight in glorious and exciting fashion.

Matt Reeves, who directed Cloverfield, Let Me In and the vastly underrated The Pallbearer, proves a more than ample choice for this movie. He’s already been announced for the sequel, due two years from now.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Legions of Michael Bay haters have been jumping all over this Turtles reboot before it even hit the screen. It’s actually not a Michael Bay film; he only served as producer on this one. Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans, Battle Los Angeles) is the director here, and he’s put something together that is far more coherent than the latest Bay-helmed Transformers movie.

This is not to say that the movie is any good, because it actually isn’t, but it is markedly better than most of Bay’s output. Megan Fox plays April, a wannabe reporter who stumbles upon a vigilante force protecting Manhattan from an evil terrorist group. The vigilantes turn out to be the infamous turtles—also, coincidentally, the turtles April had as a child. The turtles, the result of scientific experiments, were raised in the sewers by a rat, and now they are ready to rise above the street surface and kick some ass. The film has some good moments, and the turtles eat some pizza and get some laughs. Fox is a bit of a bore in the central human role, Will Arnett is virtually wasted as her cameraman, and I’m sick and tired of William Fichtner playing bad guys. The special effects are OK, but the story offers nothing special. A sequel is already being prepared. A director with a better sense of wonder, and a better sense of humor, could do the franchise well.

This is a goofy, dazzling, often hilarious convergence of inspired nuttiness.

You’ll probably hear comparisons to the original Star Wars, The Fifth Element and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, and all of those comparisons would be plausible.

It’s a blessedly new and crazy direction for the Marvel universe, and director James Gunn (Super, Slither) has taken a huge step towards the A-list. Also taking a giant leap toward the upper echelon of Hollywood royalty is Chris Pratt, who mixes great charm, rugged action hero bravado and premium comic timing as Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord. After a prologue that shows the Earthly origins of his character, Pratt sets the tone for the movie during the opening credits, grooving to his cassette-playing Sony Walkman on an alien planet and using squirrelly little critters as stand-in microphones. After unknowingly stealing a relic that could have the power

What starts out as a potentially great movie winds up being a merely good one in the end. Scarlett Johansson stars as the title character, an American living in Taiwan who gets mixed up with the wrong people and winds up not only a drug mule, but a drug mule with a highly experimental drug placed inside her lower stomach. When the drugs start to leak, Lucy winds up using her brain to full capacity, not only resulting in her ability to control her body but also the forces around her. Luc Besson directs with his usual visual competence, and Johansson is great in the title role. The problem keeping the film from greatness is that it feels as if it’s going to some great place, and then suddenly ends at 89 minutes. Granted, it’s a good 89 minutes, but I was left feeling a bit unfulfilled. Morgan Freeman shows up as a scientist who knows a lot about brains, while Min-sik Choi (the original Oldboy) plays a true bastard of a bad guy. Surely, the premise is total bullshit, but the resultant mayhem is fun bullshit at that.

I just wish Besson had a more complete story to tell.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Dwayne Johnson, following the likes of Steve Reeves, Kevin Sorbo and Arnold Schwarzenegger, steps into the role of Son of Zeus. Actually, this film suggests that the title character might not be immortal, and is part of a scam. It’s one of the many sly touches that make this movie enjoyable. Johnson is good in the lead, and his band of battle disciples includes Ian McShane and Rufus Sewell in fine form. It’s directed by Brett Ratner, the man who got himself into trouble with legions of rabid fans for screwing up X-Men: The Last Stand. (I didn’t think it was that bad.) Ratner does a lot with a medium-sized budget. (Yes, $100 million for a blockbuster is medium these days.) The movie looks good, and is quite clever at times. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting this to be much good given its pedigree, but the results are kind of enjoyable. Johnson has developed into a fun movie star, and Ratner can make a decent movie, even if he is the guy responsible for the Rush Hour films.

The Godfather of Soul gets a rollicking but milquetoast biopic with Get on Up, showcasing a dynamite Chadwick Boseman as James Brown. The movie is entertaining, and it does flirt with the more controversial aspects of Brown’s life, but it plays it a little too safe. A true telling of James Brown’s often insane life would command an R-rating and be a real powder keg of a movie. Director Tate Taylor (The Help) doesn’t avoid the domestic violence, drugs and brushes with the law that were mainstays in Brown’s life, but he does treat those aspects as a bit of a side note. The film’s focus stays primarily on Brown’s tough upbringing and his music.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it does result in what feels like a missed opportunity for greatness. The movie, which is not told chronologically, starts promisingly as we see the events leading up to the infamous police chase that landed Brown in jail for three years. Boseman is nothing short of amazing in these scenes as the somewhat crazy older Brown, brandishing a shotgun and seeking out the person who dared to use his bathroom to take a dump. The film then commences to bounce around in time, showing Brown as a young child in Augusta, Georgia, all the way up to his latter years as a performer. This narrative technique is certainly fun, giving the movie a sense of “anything can happen” and making it feel far from routine. Boseman even breaks the fourth wall to chat with the audience, something that’s a bit jarring at first but eventually works. If you go to this movie to see somebody kick some major ass with the James Brown dance moves, Get on Up definitely delivers. If you’re looking for a biopic that captures his amazingly crazy life, you’ll just have to keep waiting. I’m no James Brown expert, but what I do know tells me this movie doesn’t even scratch the surface.

One in the chamber Argenta Trio There has been an Argenta Trio, in some formation, for over 40 years. Founded as the University of Nevada, Reno by Kent Irwin Faculty Trio by Ron Williams in 1961, the chamber music ensemble is the university’s answer to the Dread Pirate Roberts: not one group, but a revolving cast.

James Winn, pianist, is the senior member of the current incarnation of the Argenta Trio. He recalls discovering his family’s piano at age 4, and not being able to keep away from it.

“There’s a stereotype in movies of the parents that want to force the kid into music, when he really wants to be outside playing ball,” says Winn.

“I was the kid that didn’t want to play ball.”

Pianist James Winn, violinist Stephanie Sant'Ambrogio and cellist Dmitri Atapine are the current lineup of the Argenta Trio.

Violinist Stephanie Sant’Ambrogio’s introduction to music was less voluntary. Her father was a professional cellist who had to prod her every day to practice.

“Then in ninth grade, something just clicked,” says Sant’Ambrogio.

She traveled with the St. Louis Youth Orchestra to some of the most sacred sites of classical music, including Austria and Italy.

“I turned 16 in Vienna with a beer,” she laughs.

Though the current members of Argenta Trio, Winn, Sant’Ambrogio and cellist Dmitri Atapine, have worked with orchestras, they agree that chamber music is where their talents are best spent.

“Chamber music has always been my favorite,” says Winn. “It allows for the most individual intensity. It’s a very intimate musical conversation.”

“It’s like a dinner party,” says Sant’Ambrogio. “Everyone has their own opinion to bring to the table.”

The smaller setting also allows Winn to explore his own compositions. When his parents realized their child wasn’t going to stop playing piano, they decided to get him lessons.

His teacher was an apprentice of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. This imparted a lasting impression of Finnish culture and music on him. In his latest composition, Winn draws from the epic Finnish book of poetry, the Kalevala.

The concerto, divided into three parts, is a mix of eclectic influences both musical and literary. The first, a nocturne, is inspired by a satirical novel by Thorne Smith, in which a group of amateur occultists try to summon Venus for an orgy. A botched translation instead summons the goddess of the hunt, who also happens to be the goddess of chastity.

The second movement draws inspiration from Winn’s own Celtic heritage. The piece is inspired by “The Legend of Tomlin,” in which a married man is seduced by a Fairy Queen. A Celtic-influenced melody is introduced to represent the earnest love of his wife before the music descends into a wild and strange detour. The piece ends with the Celtic theme—the wife’s love—returning.

The final movement is an ode to a Finnish legend from the Kalevala that explains why the sea is salty. A magical mill that grinds salt is stolen by an evil witch. To represent the grinding, the violin plays rapid, jarring tremolo. The witch can’t figure out how to make the grinding stop, so she puts the mill by the sea, where it continually dumps its product.

Argenta Trio’s passion for music extends to organizing festivals both locally and abroad. Atapine has been bringing international names to UNR’s stage for three years, and Sant’Ambrogio organizes the Cactus Pear Festival in San Antonio annually.

Despite their success, the members agree that times are tough for musicians of all kinds. Many orchestras around the country aren’t finding the right budgets. Winn believes that intellectual endeavors are increasingly considered effete.

In the face of this musical recession, the members of Argenta Trio advise young musicians to stay multifaceted, and to leave themselves open to diverse opportunities. Ω

I’m with stupor A close friend has a drinking problem. His wife kicked him out, he lost his job, and he’s been a lousy father to their 1-year-old son. He begged to stay with me, his only single friend, and has been sleeping on my couch for months.

Despite my lecturing him a thousand times, he’s still going out and getting wasted—while trying to talk his wife into taking him back. She called to ask how he’s been. I said “pretty good,” though the truth is I just want him out of my apartment.

Welcome to the dark side of empathy: empathy that backfires, ultimately causing harm. Dr. Barbara Oakley explains that empathy is a knee-jerk emotional response rooted in our fast-responding intuitive thinking system. Empathy jumps right in, shoving us into action. Our slower rational thought system often isn’t given the chance to say, “Will you maybe be helping a drunk stay a drunk by turning your living room into the Schlitz-Carlton?”

Addiction is adult baby behavior. As clinical psychologist Dr. Frederick Woolverton explains in Unhooked, addiction involves ducking into a substance or activity to avoid experiencing uncomfortable emotions that are a normal part of adult life. Take a new father’s feelings about the ginormous responsibility ahead of him. Understandably scary. But rather than try to figure things out, your friend resorts to child abandonment in liquid form.

You can’t lecture a guy out of addiction. To overcome one, a person needs to realize that it “interferes with their deepest values or goals,” explains addiction expert Dr. Stanton Peele in Recover! Peele gives the example of Phil, 32 | RN&R |

a lifelong smoker who’d made numerous failed attempts to quit. After a heart attack, Phil woke up in the hospital longing for a smoke. His daughter said that if he had another cigarette, he’d never see her again. That moment was the end of Phil’s smoking. Peele notes that “Phil’s core life” was about being a father, not a smoker.

Peele says that even someone who isn’t a therapist— you, for example—can remind an addict of what he values through “motivational interviewing,” a sympathetic, nonconfrontational questioning technique Peele details in 7 Tools to Beat Addiction. First, draw out what matters to the person—in your friend’s case, maybe how it felt to have a child born, what he wants for his son, etc. Then, gently inquire about how his goals and dreams square with his current life. Don’t push; if he’s resistant, pull back.

It’s also time for some healthy kindness—the sort that feels bad in the moment but, in the long run, may get him on the road to contributing to a college fund. Give him some deadlines. First, he has to tell his wife the truth, or you’ll at least tell her you weren’t completely honest. Next, inform him that your apartment is retiring from its stint as the Motel 6-Pack. Give him a move-out date, and be prepared to stick to it. Ω

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Near the

end of his career, the painter Henri Matisse created a paper-cut composition he called “Le Bateau,” or “The Boat.” It is an abstract piece that does not depict a literal boat.

That’s why the Museum of Modern Art in New York should perhaps be forgiven for mistakenly hanging it upside-down back in 1961, upon first acquiring the piece. Fortunately, after a month and a half, a knowledgeable person noticed, and the position of “Le Bateau” was corrected. I’m wondering if there’s a comparable phenomenon going on with you right now, Aquarius? Is it possible that a part of your life got inverted or transposed? Rockin’ shots David Robert has been photographing in the area for more than 25 years, and his favorite thing to photograph is rock ’n’ roll concerts. The opening reception for his 25-year retrospective exhibit The Last of the Rockstars is Saturday, Aug. 16 at 5 p.m. at Rock City Posters, 1286 S. Virginia St. It will be open for 30 days. There will be about 30 printed photos and a slide show with about 500 more.

What is the exhibit going to be like?

It’s going to be 25 years plus of rock ’n’ roll photography, every band from Alice Cooper to Frank Zappa, to David Gilmore to U2, Led Zeppelin, many, many, many bands. … I can’t remember who said it to me, but they were comparing my photography to music. ... But they said that my photography has the crazy creativeness of Pink Floyd and the tight looseness of the Rolling Stones.

Why are you having this exhibit now?

Because I’ve been compiling this for the past few years, and Scotty Roller and Rob Brooks at Rock City Posters asked me if I’d put on a show. I’d been looking for a venue to put on a show for years. I’ve been offered quite a few venues, but this

having trouble with this. I have some beautiful shots of the Flaming Lips. There’s one of my heroes in here, David Gilmore from Pink Floyd. My other hero, Daniel Ash from Bauhaus, is in here. It’s all over the place. … It’s hard to pick, but there is one. It’s from a gothic band called the Crüxshadows, and the reason I like that one is it’s a slow shutter photo. It’s very cool. It’s a photo of a girl playing a violin.

And I’ve always been known for my slow shutter photos, kind of my signature photography.

You used to photograph here at the Reno News & Review. Where else have you photographed?

Yes, I was photo editor there. I have my own business right now called Biggest Little City Photography where I do a variety of photography, mainly commercial photography. Everything from architecture to portrait work. I do a lot of bands. What else? An occasional wedding. I’m doing magazine work now. … I’ve shot for Pollstar, an international music trade magazine. I’ve been in Guitar Player magazine, Gig magazine, Fernandes Guitar Catalog, Epiphone Guitar Catalog.

I’d imagine you’ve got a lot of options to choose from. How did you go about choosing what would go into the exhibit?

It was very pleasurable but painful at the same time. There was a lot of painful omissions, and there was a lot of stuff that I found that I had forgotten I had, too. … It was a two- or three-year process because, even before this exhibit, I had it in mind that I was going to do an exhibit. In my spare time, I would go through thousands and thousands of photos.

And this exhibit is called The Last of the Rockstars, why?

$200 of prevention I recently ran into a friend who had a tale of pain and woe to share. He had just been tagged with a nasty slash of those bleepity bleep shingles, running from his rib cage to his belly.

He was not thrilled with this development. In fact, you could accurately describe him as miffed. Even peeved.

Hell, there were some times where it would be totally fair to describe his mood as pee-owed (or, as the infamous Butthole Surfers spelled it for the title of one of their ornery little albums in the ’90s—Pioughed).

The point here is simply that his tale of discomfort was such that he was completely honest in confessing to me that, had he known the shingles were gonna be this much of a pain, he would have forked out the $200 for the preventative shingle vaccination booster in a freakin’ heartbeat.

There’s been a campaign on the idiot box lately with this very message. Those of us who had the chicken pox as a kid are all vulnerable to getting nailed with a blast of shingles. I got ’em two years ago, and my case wasn’t all that bad. I was OPINION

lucky, with a relatively mild patch of blisters on my side. But them blisters were touchy enough and sensitive enough to where the best plan of relief I could give myself was just to simply go shirtless, because even a Tshirt making the slightest contact on those suckers was enough to launch forth a steamin’ stream of blue, blue expletives. So, yes, the shingles vaccine. Still not cheap. I know, I know. But just remember this simple reality—everybody who gets shingles would write a check on the spot for $200 to make those little bastards go away.

• I went to see the new James Brown biopic called Get on Up. I thought it was pretty darned good, but then again, I’ve read James’ bio and I’ve got his definitive box set (the four-CD collection Star Time—$40 bucks on Amazon and easily the best 40 you’ll ever spend on music), so I was pretty much up on the story of the guy’s rather zesty life. I’m not so sure that anybody seeing this movie without knowing much

about JB would like it as much as I did because the movie seems to count on its viewers to have at least some background on his story and songs. But I will tell you this much. The kid with the starring role, Chadwick Boseman (who first came to national attention as Jackie Robinson in the film 42) is Mr. Dynamite in this film. The dude absolutely kills it. I always leave the Oscar chat to our celluloid hero, Señor Grimm, but after seeing Boseman as James Brown, I don’t think I’m out of line at all in guaranteeing that this guy is gonna get a nomination. And what really seals the deal here—dude can move! As in, he has some ants in his pants, and he needs to dance! The performance scenes in this flick are stellar, and Mr. Boseman really did his homework in gettin’ down with that timelessly badass footwork of The Godfather. Ω |
