Refugee crisis

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Well, all right. All right, all right. I’ve seen the art for our Biggest Little Best of Northern Nevada, and I can tell you, it’s monster. Without actually adding dimensions, I’m not sure how we’d top that 3-D thing we did last year, so we decided to go big on two of our favorite dimensions.

Is that too opaque? I’m sorry, you know how it is—I don’t want to give anything away, but I’m really excited.

I can tell you, from this moment, July 23, until publication on Aug. 7, things are going to be frightening around here. So don’t expect me to return your emails or phone calls. In fact, I should start seeing spreadsheets sometime tomorrow, and I can’t wait!

Dennis Myers just walked past my doorway, and I could tell from the spring in his step he’s ready to get this thing on, too. Man, it’s going to be awesome.

Should be only one glitch.

I’ve got to be up to Sandpoint, Idaho, on July 31 for a family reunion. I wish they’d consulted me before they decided on the family reunion dates, but well, you know, I think much of the family believe that either I was adopted or switched at birth.

You’d just have to see a family picture, though, to know that this nut didn’t fall far from the banana tree.

I also wish they’d consulted me before they constructed the city of Sandpoint. We’re planning on driving because we’ve never seen much of Idaho, but that’s way the hell up there. We’ll probably bring our passports just so we can stop up in Canada to pick up some T-shirts or maybe some health care.

I’ll probably be counting votes for the whole drive so it won’t be time wasted, but I’ll bet I’ll be all strung out on one of those energy drinks. We had a record number of voters in Best Of this year, more than 5,093 to be exact.

But it’ll all soon be over.

We’ll take our little trip. I’ll have some great memories of the summer, and I’ll be ready to start planning for the next big thing.

The influx of illegal aliens streaming into our country in the last few months has created an economic crisis, but more importantly, a national public health crisis has now developed. We now know that those masses of illegals are carrying multiple contagious diseases—tuberculosis, Chagas disease, dengue fever, hepatitis, malaria, measles, according to Dr. Elizabeth Lee Vliet, who has worked on medical projects in Central and South America since 2009. It is imperative that both main political parties work to have all the illegals quarantined to protect the public and to protect the illegals from each other as well. Public safety supersedes any immigration debate.

Our abandoned military bases can facilitate much of the needed facilities for the quarantine and detention of these illegals till they can be deported.

Re “Does Reno have an image problem?” (Feature story, May 22): I don’t understand why Reno continues to generate negative comments. I’m sick of the Reno bashing. I grew up in California, but have also lived in and visited many other areas. Reno has much to offer, from unlimited recreation and events to its convenient size. buying contraception, it just makes it unaffordable. Also it’s a simple medical fact that there is no overlap between contraception—including emergency contraception—and abortion. Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy, and a viable pregnancy can only exist after a fertilized egg implants in the uterine wall. No form of birth control can undo this condition, including the forms cited

by Hobby Lobby. Birth control works by preventing fertilization in the first place. That’s not abortion.

There’s nothing to abort. Birth control reduces the need for abortion.

If you want to reduce abortion, you should actually promote birth control.

This was a bad decision enabled by a bad law. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act should be repealed, and Republicans should stop treating women like breeding stock.

We meant “Commandant” Re “Put school district under glass” (Editorial, July 10): What part of “at-will employment” don’t you understand? Senior administrators like Mieras serve at the “pleasure” of the superintendent. Pedro Martinez, unlike his predecessors, is actually holding these administrators accountable.

Unlike that awful Paul Dugan, he’s actually forcing people who are administrators out the door instead of giving them jobs for life. I know through personal experience my life was destroyed by bad principals who were given a slap on the wrist instead of fired like they should have been.

I am glad he’s created a “climate of fear” by those who thought they could step on teachers and classified workers and get away with it forever.

These administrators are not entitled to lifetime jobs, understand? I hope more of them are fired and forced

You are to be complimented on seeing the real issues and discrepancies behind the actions and words spoken by the superintendent. It is so very rare in our day. Just tripe Re “Corporations are people, just like us” (Left Foot Forward, July 10): I’m keeping this letter as short as possible so as to contain my frustration. Why is it that when most individuals comment on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to side with Hobby Lobby some very pertinent facts are left out. First off Hobby Lobby’s corporate overlord does not “come between a woman and her doctor when it comes to personal health decisions.” Company owners feels that they should not have to pay for certain forms of contraception. Another fact that gets left out is that Hobby Lobby doesn’t want to pay/provide for contraception that kills a fetus. Come to think of it, isn’t it too late to “contracept” once intercourse is done and baby’s on the way? This leaves at least 16 other contraception methods that the

company does approve and will pay for. Which is more than enough for any woman or man for that matter; the company should probably add abstinence classes to make it 17 methods. As for Sheila Leslie, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and anyone else arguing that the court’s decision might extend to things such as blood transfusions, pig derived medications, anesthesia and certain pill coatings is just fear-mongering tripe. The fact that Ginsburg goes off on a tangent about things other than contraception proves that she doesn’t have a leg to stand on. Go look up the companies owned by the likes of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Scientologists, certain Muslims, Jews and Hindus. Have they imposed restrictions that I don’t know about yet? Lastly the highest court in the land spoke. Doesn’t the buck stop there? As a man—the other half of the species needed to make a child—I find this decision liberating. Lately, a lot of our rights have been pushed aside. It’s about time freedom rang. If Leslie and Ginsberg believe what they say, they should put their money where their mouths are: Boycott all the products and the services the above religions provide and let me know how life is. As for me all my Christmas gifts are coming from Hobby Lobby.

Bungled It was no shock or even surprise that the Washoe County School Board took disciplinary action against Superintendent Pedro Martinez. His high-handed behavior, his indifference to the poor morale in the school district workforce (“healthy tension,” he called it), his contempt for the notion of explaining himself to the public practically invited discipline. So something along these lines could be expected. What was not expected was the board’s mishandling of it.

Where do we start? No public notice. No public input.

No proper agenda. From out of nowhere, in a process that appeared casual and unofficial, the board allegedly put the superintendent on paid leave without giving him an advance opportunity to respond to accusations. It seemed very much like his behavior in removing the school district police chief. How could the school board members, with his example immediately before them, imitate him?

The board needed to make a case to the public before it acted, not spring everything with no advance word. As the board should know from the reaction to the police chief’s firing, this school district belongs to all of us in this county.

Martinez’s certified public accountant credentials, the purported basis for his suspension, seem to us to be more a subjective call than the board is letting on. So far, no one has challenged his training in the field. That leaves the issues of whether he is, or was, a licensed or practicing CPA, and what he told the board in interviews during the hiring process. Memory is uncertain, and some current members of the board weren’t even on the board when Martinez was hired. The dispute is so nebulous that a lot of people think Martinez is being given a $50 penalty for a 50 cent crime. And why has the board failed to address the serious questions about Martinez’s other failings?

Oh, gee. Is there a good hangover? I fell down the steps at Cadillac Ranch. And that was the start of the hangover. Black coffee, water, oatmeal. The oatmeal absorbs the alcohol.

At the same time, if the CPA dispute is more nuanced than we have heard, other issues are more nuanced than they are being portrayed: • Board member Estella Gutierrez objected that she was not present for the board meeting and some Latino leaders are reading a race factor into Martinez’s firing in Gutierrez’s absence. But Gutierrez chose to absent herself to attend an Oakland conference as a favor for a friend instead of attending the school board meeting as a favor to the voters who elected her. The agenda did not list the superintendent as a topic, but it listed other matters.

• The Reno Gazette-Journal editorialized that because former longtime members of the Reno City Council and University and Community College System of Nevada Board of Regents serve on the school board, they should have known the open meeting law in detail.

This is nonsense. We’ve known public figures who served capably in office for decades without knowing that law fully. (The same is true of some longtime reporters.) Elected officials must deal with innumerable statutes. The open meeting statutes are just some of them, and they cannot be expected to know them all in detail. That’s why public bodies have legal counsel, which brings up another question—what was the school board’s lawyer doing all the time the paid leave drama was unfolding? We are told he was present.

One week ago, public focus was on the superintendent’s behavior. Now it has shifted to the behavior of the school board. Parents, police officers and others who wanted Martinez’ earlier behavior addressed may never have that opportunity now. Ω |

Zoom. Zoom.

It turns out throwing money at a problem actually works sometimes.

Case in point: zoom schools.

The 2013 Legislature approved $50 million in extra funding to invest in elementary schools with high populations of English language learners and struggling students. These “zoom by schools,” located in Washoe and Clark Sheila Leslie counties, used the funding to decrease class sizes and provide additional prekindergarten classes, reading centers, and extra school days.

And it worked.

School administrators told the Legislative Committee on Education recently that preliminary data from the first year of operations is very promising. When the school year began, just 10 percent of the prekindergarten students spoke English, but by the end of the year 80 percent of them had acquired the skill. Only 35 percent of the pre-kindergarten children had the expected level of reading during the fall, but almost 100 percent were reading at grade-level by the summer.

Kindergarten class size decreased from 40 students in many classrooms to a maximum of 21 children.

Eighty percent of the kids in those classrooms met the end-of-year benchmarks in writing skills and articulating letter sounds.

There’s no magic, really, about the zoom schools. We’ve known for a long time what it would take to improve our educational system.

Serious class-size reduction strategies were prioritized by Govs. Richard Bryan and Bob Miller, along with early childhood learning programs.

But during the “taxes are evil” era, kindergarten was denigrated as “babysitting” and education champions like Speaker Barbara Buckley were chided, publicly and privately, for spending so much energy on advocating for full-day kindergarten.

Funding pre-school programs was out of the question. Republicans only compromised a little by allowing a few more schools in poorer areas to have full-day kindergarten along with some “pay as you go” programs for more affluent schools.

But in just one year, the zoom schools have proven their worth. The program has money for the upcoming school year and both school districts hope to add additional zoom schools and use every penny. It will be up to the 2015 Legislature to reauthorize or possibly expand the funding.

Just a few days after the great zoom report, this year’s national Kids Count study was released, more in line with the usual education news in Nevada. Once again, Nevada’s public school system ranked 50th in the country. It’s the third year in a row we’ve been dead last.

Dale Erquiaga, Nevada’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, noted progress has been made despite the poor ranking, telling the Las Vegas Review-Journal, “Nevada continues to gain ground, but we remain in 50th place. That’s unacceptable.” He went on to imply it’s less about money, and more about reform, stating, “We’re changing the way the state department (of education) works and expect districts to do the same.”

Kids Count reported that Nevada still has the worst high school dropout rate in the nation, double the national average, and the lowest percentage of children in preschool.

It seems obvious you can’t be the worst at both ends of the preschoolto-high school graduation continuum and expect to be anything but last.

Erquiaga acknowledged that Nevada’s children need help, noting the poverty rate where one in two children qualify for subsidized school lunch. But he said, “There’s no excuse for us to be 10 to 20 [percentage] points behind the rest of the nation.

Districts have to continue rethinking their efforts before students fall so far behind they can’t catch up in time.”

Exactly. That’s why the extra $50 million spent on zoom schools needs to be expanded to every elementary school with struggling students. The way students “catch up” is through smaller classes, extra services, and more time in school. It’s all possible, but it takes money.

Government is not the answer Nevada state Sen. Tick Segerblom’s frank discussion of Democratic Party strategy in recent interviews included the perennial progressive wish for annual sessions of the legislature.

The progressives obsess over problems they believe can be solved by more politicians creating more laws. by Brendan Unconsidered are the laws they pass Trainor having unintended consequences that lead to more laws and then more unintended consequences and so on with a constant loss of freedom. They see government as the solution, not the problem. They forget what the great classical liberal Mark Twain once said about the newly created Nevada Legislature: “The Nevada Constitution says the legislature shall meet for 90 days every two years. After watching them in action, I believe they should meet for two days every 90 years.”

The Legislature is not the solution to Nevada’s problems. The people of Nevada are.

Ending term limits is another goal. According to the progressives,

there is now no chance for “leadership” with so many newcomers every session. In other words, there are fewer political debts to call to get votes in line. The days of the strong Assembly Speaker like the late Joe Dini are over. To many this lack of leadership is a feature, not a bug. Society is becoming less hierarchical because networking in the shared economy is growing. If you live by the initiative, you can also die by the initiative. The people have signed on to term limits, and the progressives have got to live with it at least for now.

Progressives believe that the changing “demographics” in Nevada include the rise of the Millennial generation. But aside from the social issues, are the Millennials really on board with the progressive agenda?

Recent polls indicate otherwise. The Millennials never experienced the Cold War. But they are growing up experiencing diminished expectations from the old progressive institutions like Social Security. When

Millennial say “liberal” they mean socially liberal, period. When they say “socialism” they mean a basic safety net, not government ownership of the means of production.

Segerblom is riding a wave of social liberalism because he is on the right side of history with medical—and now recreational—marijuana, and overturning the ban on gay marriage.

But he is doing this with the help of libertarian Republicans like Reno Assemblyman Pat Hickey who helped get the medical marijuana establishments law passed. I hope that this same libertarian streak will enable some Republicans to break ranks and support the legalization of gay marriage in this upcoming session. Then it is up to Republicans to get out the message that there are economic downsides to progressives despite their social tolerance. A majority of young people want to own their own business someday.

They also say they do not want big government telling them how to run their business. They believe in

free markets, although they identify the word “capitalism” with crony capitalism.

Although many Millennials are registered Democrats, more are nonpartisan. Even the proportion of registered Democrats is lower than other age groups. The Republican numbers are weak among Millennials, largely because of the party’s social intolerance.

The Libertarian Party may be able to capitalize on this but always face the two-party bias baked into our electoral system. Republicans can, if they are willing to concede the social changes while vigorously protecting religious minorities and emphasizing the downsides to a hierarchical, heavily taxed and regulated future for Nevada. When Millennials say “fair,” unlike progressives like Segerblom, they are talking about everyone getting their due, not necessarily about income redistribution through progressive taxation.

This generation holds Nevada’s political future in their hands. Ω

Sorting it out On July 22, media outlets began reporting that the Washoe County School Board had fired schools superintendent Pedro Martinez.

That was not what the school board had said. In a prepared statement it used a different phrase—“relieved of his duties.” This term usually refers to a step short of termination, as when Nevada Highway Patrol chief David Hosmer was relieved of duty in 2006 while an inquiry into his conduct was conducted. In addition, if the school board intended to say termination, it presumably would have used that term.

On the morning of July 23, the RN&R, our interest piqued by the wording, made some calls and by noon felt certain that Martinez was still on the district payroll. We posted a report on our Newsview blog at 12:38 p.m.: “Sources tell the Reno New & Review that Washoe schools superintendent Pedro Martinez has not been fired, but has been placed on paid administrative leave. They say no vote was taken last night. Rather, the board acted by consensus without a vote, whatever that means.” School district lawyer Randy Drake told us he would be putting out a statement shortly to clarify what had happened the night before. (He never did.)

As the afternoon wore on, the firing story kept gaining ground.

KOLO, KTVN, KRNV, and the Reno Gazette-Journal all posted stories repeating that Martinez had been fired. Finally school board chair Barbara Clark said that he had not been, and that he was on paid leave. The Reno Gazette-Journal put that story online at 4:50. Meanwhile, Martinez was trying to gather support and giving interviews. At 6:38 that evening, a KTVN story on one of those interviews went up, and it still used the term “firing” more than an hour after Clark had spoken.

After Clark’s statement, Martinez kept insisting he’d been fired. But he had no way of knowing what action the board took because, he himself had said, he was asked to leave the room while the board took MARTINEZ action. (“Took action” is a term used advisedly. Some sources say no vote was taken either in open or closed session.) Clark, not Martinez, was the authority on what had been done. But some media entities seemed reluctant to let go of the firing story or were uncomfortable admitting they had gone beyond the school board’s original statement.

On July 24, some outlets were still treating the matter as a firing. One fortunate newspaper was the Sparks Tribune. Its publication schedule meant its next edition was after Clark’s statement, so from the start it reported paid leave instead of a firing. But the Gazette-Journal continued to use terms like “removal” and even challenged the notion of paid leave in an editorial on the ground that school board chair Barbara Clark had spoken of preparations for seeking a replacement—which, however, would have been a normal precaution even if Martinez had only been put on leave.

(Hosmer ended up leaving his post.) As late as July 29, the RGJ was still referring to the board’s “attempt to dismiss.”

A school district spokesperson said school board minutes “take several months to get approved.” These minutes may have to be hurried up this time, given the level of interest in them and the open meeting complaint filed by the RGJ. If they show the board did not vote, then not only was Martinez not fired, he wasn’t put on leave, either. In that case, he is still superintendent of schools with full authority. The board cannot act without taking a vote. One source said another vote was planned to cover that eventuality, but an agenda item for its upcoming July 29 meeting that could have been used for that purpose has been withdrawn. If the board did not vote, that may reduce some of its open meeting problems.

Why did the board’s original statement say Martinez had been relieved of his duties but not that he was on paid leave? According to some sources, that was done at his insistence. Why didn’t the board correct the record more quickly? Harder to say.

The abortion candidate?

“I see it as a very settled issue in Nevada.”

Fred Lokken Political analyst Salon’s July 8 article by Katie McDonough didn’t get it into the headline (“The left’s new hero emerges: Why Lucy Flores’ candid advocacy is so important”) but that’s what its story was about: “When any woman shares her abortion story, she creates space for others to do the same.”

Flores described her experience with abortion on April 1 last year in Assembly Education Committee testimony supporting changes in sex education law. She described being

raised in adolescence by a single father after her mother left the household.

There was nothing like sex education in their home, she said, and all of her sisters, she said, had become pregnant before her.

“One was 14 years old when she got pregnant with twins,” she said.

“That is what I had to learn from. ...

I always said that I was the only one who didn’t have kids in their teen-aged years. That’s because at 16, I got an abortion, and it was a very difficult thing for me to do.”

She approached her father for help in obtaining the abortion, she said.

“I wanted to do better and I knew I couldn’t do that if I had a baby, just like everyone else [in the family].

My dad gave me the money, and I went with a friend of mine, and I will never forget that, having that done. …

And so how do we prevent this? We prevent by education. We prevent by giving them the information and the resources that they need, so they don’t have to go to their dad and say, ‘I need $200 for an abortion.’”

After that teen experience, Flores went on to get a general equivalency high school diploma, graduated from the University of Southern California and then law school. She is now in her second term in the Nevada Assembly.

While the Weekly Standard says she “talks up” the experience

on the campaign trail, she has not.

The word abortion does not appear on her website, certainly not on the page devoted to issues. It features an MSNBC story on her, but ends the text before it reaches the portion that mentions the abortion. And Flores seems aware that the matter could overwhelm her other messages, because far from talking it up, her staff is discouraging it. When the RN&R sought an interview with her on the subject on July 23, we were told she was busy the rest of the day. When we asked about July 24, we were told she was “booked solid” that day too, and also “through the weekend. She’s spoken at length publicly about this issue. Sorry we can’t accommodate you on this occasion but do let us know if you have other topics you would like to cover in future.”

Rather, it appears that it’s reporters who are more preoccupied by Flores’ year-old committee testimony. And some of them want to see it spun in certain ways as it plays out during the campaign. McDonough at Salon objects to the way the abortion issue is incessantly filtered through the lens of opponents.

“If more women like Flores started coming out with their own experiences about abortion care—how far they had to drive to reach a clinic, how much it cost them, the protesters they confronted on their way, their experience with the doctors and clinic staff—it would demystify the experience for the many Americans who are getting their information about reproductive healthcare from caveman fools like Lindsey Graham and Rick Perry,” McDonough wrote. “We’re long overdue for some common sense and reality checking in our debates about reproductive health care. Lucy Flores was willing to step up. Who’s next?”

A lot of the national coverage may be affected by a lack of understanding of the Nevada view of the abortion issue.

“I think that in Nevada the abortion issue is not as emotional as it is elsewhere,” said political analyst Fred Lokken.

Nevadans voted on the issue in a 1990 referendum and approved the state’s Roe-style abortion law in a landslide, 71.3 to 27.2 percent. That more or less removed it from politics and made it difficult to raise the issue against candidates who support abortion.

“I see it as a very settled issue in Nevada, more so than in other states,” Lokken said. “It would only be some portion of the right in the Republican party that is brooding on it.”

Word choice Lokken said he thinks the Flores staff is falling down on the job by not giving reporters something else to cover. “They should be artificially creating stories that turn reporters’ attention somewhere else,” he said.

“Her staff should really get off the dime.” But that’s not easy to do with the national reporters. To them, Flores’ abortion story is new and unusual, and they’re not likely to be diverted by her stands on Nevada economic development.

Lokken said he thinks Flores will get credit with some voters for candor.

But in practical campaign terms, he said, the main concern would be fundraising.

“The only thing they have to worry about is whatever affects the money flow and in the Democratic party that’s not likely to happen because of this issue,” he said.

Another problem for Flores is that a lot of the abortion coverage she’s getting is relatively unsophisticated, akin to what it would have been like 20 or 30 years ago. Abortion is not the novelty it once was. And some writers use it to define candidates’ overall political stances. Flores is a pro-business attorney with a middleof-the-road voting record, yet Salon characterized her as the “left’s new hero” solely based on a single issue.

One indication of the way Flores is at the mercy of the way some reporters cover the abortion issue is in the use of a particular term in much of the coverage of her experience.

In a July 16 Huffington Post piece

by Ryan Buxton, the lead sentence was, “Lucy Flores, an assemblywoman in Nevada and candidate in the state’s lieutenant governor race, made a splash when she admitted to having an abortion at the age of 16 during a debate about sex education” (emphasis added).

But abortion is legal. What about her statement makes it an admission?

When was the last time a politician was described as “admitting” to being married or owning a business?

Lokken read that sentence at our request and responded by email, “The reporter’s personal bias—or political slant—on the issue of abortion clearly affected the selection of ‘admitted,’ as though the candidate was confessing to something. The judgment-free appropriate word should/would have been ‘acknowledged’ or ‘indicated’ or ‘said.’ The intent by the candidate likely was to confirm through her own personal experience that she fully understood what a woman goes through in making the decision to have an abortion.”

“It clearly should be ‘said’,” agreed (or admitted) Jake Highton, author of the McGraw-Hill textbook Reporter.

Slate, Huffington Post, the New York Daily News, MSNBC, and innumerable minor online sites have used “admit” or a variant to describe the statement Flores made disclosing her abortion. Interestingly, Catholic Online is not one of them—not even in its reader comments. Ω

Lake invaders Invasive species prevention and control at Lake Tahoe Invasive species have been intercepted on about 30 boats this season by Lake Tahoe inspectors.

Quagga and zebra mussels are two invasive species that officials are by Sage Leehey trying to prevent from entering the lake, according to Julie Regan, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s chief of external affairs. Quagga mussels, s age l@ specifically, could pose a huge threat to the ecosystem of Lake Tahoe news review.c om because they change the chemistry of the water.

“While they’re filter feeders, and there could be short term boosts in clarity, the long-term consequence is a huge negative impact on the fishery, on the food web of the lake as a whole and of scenic and resource degradation where they attach to piers, they attach to any structure, rocks,” Regan said.

There are four inspection stations where boaters can have their vessels checked before entering the lake. After a clean inspection, the boater receives a wire seal that must be broken in order to launch the boat and marinas check for this. They receive a new seal when leaving the lake.

Lake Tahoe already has a few species established in its depths, including Asian clams, Eurasian watermilfoil and curly-leaf pondweed.

Programs to manage and attempt to rid the lake of these species have been largely successful, and TRPA is researching more ways to handle them. The biggest issue is funding, though, because the federal funding is drying up, and boater’s fees cover about half of the overall cost of the inspection and control programs.

Regan said the presence of quagga mussels in the lake could harm or destroy various aspects of the region’s economy as well.

The tendency of quagga mussels to attach to just about anything poses a threat to water infrastructure, too, because they can clog water intake lines, forcing water purveyors to pay to chisel them off.

Other areas have already seen the effects of invasive mussels, including Lake Mead, Lake Havasu, Lake Pleasant, the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River system. According to TRPA aquatics resources program manager Dennis Zabaglo, boats coming from Lake Mead in Southern Nevada to Tahoe are the most common boats to be carrying mussels. Regan said Lake Mead has trillions of mussels and the problem is more difficult to handle there and in other places than in Tahoe.

“We’re fortunate where we have a watershed where we can see all the access points going into the lake and we can manage that with our problem versus other places, like Lake Mead, where there are multiple entry points, where it’s almost impossible to have an inspector present at every possible inspection site,” Regan said.

The best way to prevent carrying invasive species into the lake is to clean, drain and dry your vessel immediately after leaving a body of water. This will also speed up the inspection process when re-entering Lake Tahoe. Ω OPINION

What’s the best Way to cure a hangover? ome people, like those who don’t drink alcohol for health reasons or religious reasons or whatever, go their whole lives without ever suffering a debilitating hangover. They don’t know what they’re missing. Other people might drink to excess a time or two during their wild youth, wake up feeling terrible and then decide the whole binge drinking thing just isn’t for them. Other people might only endure a bad hangover or two a couple of times a year, after their birthday, maybe, or on New Year’s Day. For some of us, hangovers are a regular part of life. Maybe you work in a bar and your customers are always buying you drinks in the hope of seducing you or just because you’re damned likable. Maybe you’re a sommelier who doesn’t like to spit. Maybe, like me, you’re the host of a weekly drinking game at a local bar, and you always end up drinking more than any of the actual players. Or maybe you just like to drink.

For the uninitiated, a hangover is the uncomfortable feeling that accompanies the morning after a night of heavy drinking.

Symptoms include lightheaded-ness, nausea, fatigue, slowed down cognition and memory, and overall weakness.

So, yeah, maybe you wake up with a hangover on a semi-regular basis. For me, it’s about two or three times a month. Hell, we’ll just call it once a week. Which is fine by me. My inner werewolf needs to be taken out for a walk about once a week.

That, for me, is the ideal cycle of the

ancient saying, attributed to various sources, and sometimes called Petronius’ paradox: “Moderation in all things, including moderation.” I can impersonate a normal person for about five days a week, do all my grownup stuff and behave relatively civilly, but then once a week or so I need to cut loose, get buck wild, and make some bad decisions.

That means that then, the next morning, on the seventh day, I have a hangover day, or, what some deities call it, a day of rest. I actually see some value in hangovers. I’m a busy guy, and usually have about 30 projects in the works, and am rarely able to find time for quiet reflection, to just sit there and vegetate. Hangovers can prompt personal reflection on some of life’s big questions—like, why did I drink so much last night?

Is there some suppressed, deep-down personal misery that I’m trying to run away from? Where did I leave my wallet? Who is this person sleeping next to me? When I run into the bathroom, like I’m going to need to do here in a minute, should I kneel before the porcelain altar so I can vomit comfortably or should I sit on the toilet in case I get diarrhea, and just puke into the bathtub?

I recently asked Daniel R. Spogen, the chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno’s medical school and a director on the American Academy of Physicians board of directors, to explain the cause of hangover symptoms.

“Alcohol is a diuretic, and as you drink alcohol, you lose fluid volume,” he said. “This affects the hydration in the brain area, so basically the brain gets dehydrated. The symptoms that you get the day after are really caused by lack of hydration of the brain.”

Spogen said that there’s a lot of genetic variation in the effects of hangovers.

“There are a group of people who do not get hangovers, and the next day, they feel pretty good,” he said. “Whether or not their body can tolerate that amount of dehydration, it’s not quite understood, but one of the thoughts is that those are people who are more likely to become alcoholics because they don’t pay for it the next day.”

This is why some people get hangovers after one drink, and other people can drink 10 drinks and feel fine. It’s still not clear why some of us have been known to drink like the hangover was a goal rather than a side effect of the endeavor.

There are many schools of thought about the best ways to cure a hangover. Although I’m only 34, I’ve already done about 20 years of research on this subject. Here are my findings on the effectiveness of some of the most prevalent techniques for curing a hangover.

More alcohol Sometimes this is called, in one of the more bizarre and disturbing idioms still in common use, drinking “a hair of the dog that bit you,” having a little bit of alcohol in the morning to ward off the hangover. The Bloody Mary is the classic hangover cure cocktail, I think just because it has vegetables in it, so it seems healthy or something.

I’ve never been particularly fond of hair-ofthe-dog hangover cures. It always just feels like postponing the inevitable. You’ll get a little drunk in the morning and then need to take a nap at lunchtime.

2. Greasy food Another common suggestion that’s never been particularly effective for me is eating greasy food, like tacos from the regional fast food chain Jimboy’s or plowing down on an Awful Awful burger from the Little Nugget, or hitting up one of the valley’s finer greasy spoon diners, like the Gold Dust West, Big Ed’s Alley Inn or the Gold N Silver during the hangover.

Spogen said he’s never seen much merit in these kinds of solutions either, and that it’s probably just a case of using food to occupy space in your stomach while your

3. healthy food According to Spogen—and my own life experience—there’s a bit more merit to eating healthy food to help cure a hangover, especially bananas and other fruits and vegetables high in potassium and other electrolytes.

“Whenever you have a diuretic, you’re going to lose all your electrolytes as well, so having just plain water, you could become deficient in one of your electrolytes,” Spogen said. “In fact, there are people who will significantly get low on potassium if they have too much to drink.”

He said that drinking electrolyteenriched beverages like Pedialyte or Gatorade can also help by alleviating some of those deficiencies.

Unfortunately, “hangovers” are not among the ailments covered by Nevada’s medical marijuana program, so as effective as this hangover cure might be—and I’m not saying I know for a fact from years of extensive personal research and experimentation that this is one of the most effective cures, but supposedly it works pretty well— the big problem is that it’s still illegal. We at the RN&R support total decriminalization of marijuana, but, in the meantime, the decision whether it’s worth breaking the law to break a hangover is between, you, your god, and the state of Nevada.

“It definitely works, but it slows down the rest of your day, also,” said Rueckl.

“Taking it easy is a great hangover cure, and pot is a great way to take it easy.”

“Exercise is good because it helps you metabolize alcohol,” said Spogen. “If you’re not too wasted—you don’t want to get injured—it can help metabolize the alcohol more quickly if you’re active.”

And, as everybody knows, sex is the best form of exercise. Of course, there are those who suggest sex as the solution for everything.

However, in some ways, masturbation might be even better than sex for curing a hangover, because, you’re less likely to get lightheaded or accidentally puke all over another person. But if you’ve got a sympathetic partner, you might as well go for it.

Spogen points out that alcohol has historically been known to help with sex, helping people drop inhibitions and get comfortable. Shakespeare, in Macbeth, has the best line on the relationship of alcohol to sex: “It provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance.”

body metabolizes the alcohol. But, that being said, if you’re going to cram some food into yourself to keep it occupied while it processes the alcohol, you might as well eat whatever food you find most comforting.

Spogen says that ibuprofen can successfully help block some of the discomfort caused by dehydration, but he’s less enthusiastic about the effects of another drug often used to counteract alcohol: caffeine.

“People think that you’re drinking alcohol, which is a depressant, and caffeine is a stimulant, so they counteract each other, but it doesn’t work that way,” he said. “Basically, you get the worst effects of both. A lot of people, once they’ve had too much to drink, will brew a pot of coffee, so they’re not as drunk when they get back on the road, and the reality is you’re just using the coffee to occupy volume while your body is withdrawing from the alcohol.

It really does not help you come out of it at all.”

7. BinGe watchinG I have a friend who always likes to go to a nice air conditioned movie theater whenever he’s hungover, buy a Cherry Coke and a giant tub of popcorn, and watch the most gruesome, disturbing horror movie available. There is something oddly cathartic about seeing people disemboweled when your own bowels are in turmoil. Like, “Ah man, my guts hurt but at least they’re not spilling out all over my clothes and getting gnawed by zombies or mutant hamsters or whatever. Sure, my skin feels slimy, but at least it’s not covered in pig’s blood or alien mucous.” Or maybe you just want to stay in bed and marathon through an entire season of Arrested Development or Archer or something else funny. I’ve also noticed that hangovers shut down some of the

hyper-critical parts of my brain that prevent me from shamelessly enjoying maudlin entertainments like Barry Manilow albums, Meg Ryan movies, and Budweiser commercials. The problem with the binge-watching technique is that it’s pure escapism. You’re forgetting about your own horrible life for a minute to focus on somebody else’s, probably somebody imaginary. And, like the hair-of-the-dog approach, you’re often still hungover when the show ends, but now you feel even worse because you’ve just been sitting there for hours, staring at a screen. But sometimes this technique works well to complement another cure. It can be good to watch a movie, focus on something other than your own inner turmoil for a couple of hours, while pouring down the water, Gatorade and ibuprofen, and eating whatever comfort food works for you.

Rueckl said he helped cure a lot of hangovers during a year he worked as acupuncturist on a cruise ship.

“There’s actually a point just at the tip of your nose, the part of your nose that sticks out the furthest, there’s a point right there that helps to increase your alcohol metabolism,” he said. “Rubbing on that helps, but makes you look silly.

Acupuncture will get rid of a headache like that, 1-2-3. If you do come in with a hangover, that’s definitely something we could treat.”

9. Water The best way to prevent a hangover is to drink water alongside the alcohol. Spogen suggests 8 oz. of water after every couple of cocktails.

“Keep ahead of your hydration, but realize that the more water you drink, the more you’re going to be using the bathroom because you’re taking a diuretic at the same time,” he said. “So it’s not exactly a replacement, but it helps. … It’s better to be proactive instead of reactive, so start thinking about hydrating the night before when you’re actually doing the drinking.”

But getting into water is also very helpful, if just to wash off that gross alcohol sweat. (Quick aside: As a nonsmoker, I’m so glad that most bars are nonsmoking now; hangovers are so much worse when my hair and clothes stink like cigarettes.) Take a long shower or bath, or, even better, take a quick sojourn out to some hot springs or your favorite swimming hole.

I recently asked my Facebook friends for their hangover cure recommendations.

My buddy Ben Clyne won the thread with the most popular suggestion: “Go to Tahoe. Jump in the lake. Get out and drink a bloody beer. Go to T’s [Mesquite Rotisserie] and get a chicken burrito with guac. Eat that shit. Wash it down with beer No. 2. Take nap in sun. Wake up and be happy.”

like a sane person the majority of the time if I’m able to go out and get crazy on a semi-regular basis. And yeah, I can appreciate good, clean fun, but I’m always a little bit suspicious of people who don’t drink.

If you don’t trust yourself to lose control every now and then, it seems like you must be hiding something. But whatever, we can still be friends.

It seems like most regular drinkers like to employ some combination of these various cures, usually in a very specific order executed in a ritualistic way. So it might take some experimenting to find the combination that works best for you.

Find your personal threshold for hangovers, and be careful. As Spogen said, everybody’s metabolism is different and the quantity and quality of hangovers that might be acceptable to one person could be misery for somebody else. And, honestly, if this is a problem you’re dealing with on a daily basis, you might want to rexamine your lifestyle choices. Not that I’m one to judge. I realize that there are people out there who’ll say weekly hangovers are too many.

Drink up. Tip your bartenders. Enjoy your summer. Be safe. Don’t drink and drive. Try not to puke on anybody.

10. life cHange Of course, the greatest of all hangover preventatives is to quit drinking. Kind of square, sure, but super effective. People who don’t drink rarely, if ever, get hangovers. Even after 40 years, the game Dungeons & Dragons remains popular.

We explore the local scene.

“Y

our own imagination is more powerful than anything you can play on a screen,” says David Tolles, who’s been playing Dungeons and Dragons since 2002.

January saw the 40th anniversary of Dungeons and Dragons, a tabletop role-playing game created by Gary Gynax and Dave Arneson in 1974.

Dungeons and Dragons, or D&D for short, is essentially a collaboratively told story. Each game is made up of players who control one or more characters and a dungeon master, or DM, who acts as a referee, determining the consequences of players’ choices, enforcing the rules of the game, and creating the details and challenges of the current campaign.

While the basic premise hasn’t changed, D&D has grown and evolved over the years.

With the advent of a system with a 20-sided die, along with multiple publications to supplement the core books necessary for game play, and the integration of a gridded playing surface and figurines, the game has been perfected to a science.

Since its inception, multiple editions of Dungeons and Dragons have been released, with the fifth edition materials coming out on staggered dates that began in early July and will continue until early fall.

Currently, the fantasy genre seems to be at the zenith of its popularity. With the fanaticism over George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire books and the Game of Thrones TV show based on them, the craze over the video game Skyrim, and so many other examples of fantasy

works becoming fully integrated into mainstream culture, it’s difficult to see why Dungeons and Dragons hasn’t come close to garnering the same status.

One reason may be that since its release, D&D has fought a harsh social stigma against it, attracting negative publicity at one time or another over accusations of promoting devil worship and witchcraft.

Felix Danger, who has been playing Dungeons and Dragons for a couple of decades, says, “D&D had to go through the worst witch hunt since rock ’n’ roll because parents believed that their children were dumb enough to think these games were real. [It was] an insult to children and imagination.”

Another reason for the aversion to the game might be the stereotype of the kind of people that participate in role-playing games.

“When Dungeons and Dragons was released, it was kind of a way for social outcasts to come together and create their own world,” says Sierra Rambeau, another D&D player who works at a board game store in Reno.

However, the presence of D&D in current pop culture seems to help in breaking down the negative boundaries surrounding the game and widening the spectrum of where the players are coming from.

There are quite a few celebrities who are known to play, who bust through any molds of what a D&D player is supposed to be like or look like.

Political satirist and comedian Stephen Colbert has made several references to Dungeons and Dragons while hosting The Colbert Report and has even credited the game with helping his success in improvisation.

Actor Vin Diesel, who probably looks more recognizable in a tricked-out car that shoots flames than he does rolling a 20-sided die, is such a big fan of D&D that 10 years ago, he wrote a foreword to a book commemorating it, 30 Years of Adventure: A Celebration of Dungeons & Dragons.

-Nikki Dzadek Also, the game has made appearances on popular television shows, like Community, The Simpsons, Futurama and other programs.

While some of these shows might perpetuate the stereotype (thanks, Big Bang Theory), seeing D&D being played on television in any way really helped spark the interest in tabletop roleplaying games.

“Here at the store, we have people come in from all walks of life who ask about [Dungeons and Dragons] and want to play because they’ve seen it on Big Bang Theory or something like it.”

In any case, the reputation of Dungeons and Dragons is progressing.

“ You get to step out of your real life and do something magical.”

“[The social acceptance] has definitely improved since the media campaign of the ’80s that said D&D was a demonistic tribe. Not to say that no one says that now, they’re just laughed at more,” says Tolles. “But it’s had that stigma for a while and old habits die hard.”

One prime example of the change in sentiment towards Dungeons and Dragons is the story of when Nikki Dzadek, now Tolles’ wife, first learned that Tolles played the game, after going out for about a month.

“I walked in, and he was playing D&D and I said, ‘What! This will not do,’” says Dzadek. “How are they so out of touch with reality? I thought I was going to have to break up with him.”

However, that was in 2005, and now Dzadek, like her husband, is a dungeon master.

While there might not be a line around the block to buy the new D&D fifth edition books, it doesn’t mean that Dungeons and Dragons is not doing well. In the 40 years that the game has been around, it’s made over $1 billion in profits and has boasted over 20 million players.

PlaYing roles In a generation so fixated on technological advances, tabletop roleplaying games seem almost anachronistic in the midst of movies, smartphone apps and video games. So how does D&D manage to keep itself relevant?

First, some players who began playing 20, 30, even 40 years ago are still playing and are introducing the game now to younger generations.

Chuck Robinson, 41, remembers receiving Dungeons and Dragons as a gift years ago and playing with his father and brothers on his 12th birthday.

“I remember begging my parents to stay up late so we could just go a little bit further in the adventure,” says Robinson. “Even now, playing with my wife and 11-year-old daughter, I find myself wanting to stay up and finish just as much.”

There’s also so much to gain from playing D&D. All dragonslaying, treasure-hunting, and princess-saving aside, Dungeons and Dragons is more than a refined game of pretend amongst adults. It gives opportunities to hone some real-life skills in addition to just being something fun to do with friends.

D&D fosters and encourages thinking on your feet, public speaking, and, frankly, just using your imagination.

“It’s [also] a great way to learn teamwork, problem-solving, moral codes, and consequences for your actions,” says Danger.

But the biggest strength that D&D has going for it is exactly what sets it apart from modern entertainment–it takes your eyes off a screen and makes you interact with people, face-to-face.

“What are the perks of a movie?” says Danger. “Now add interaction.

Take the fun of watching a great show and then include your friends, and not just as other viewers.”

In Reno, there are several ways to get involved with Dungeons and Dragons if you endeavor to look for them.

In Meadowood Mall, the store Games Galore has a Dungeons and Dragons group that meets up every Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m., and UNR Dragons Club is a D&D club on the University of Nevada, Reno campus for university students.

But the most popular way to play is to join a group of friends who play or start your own.

After 40 years, Dungeons and Dragons continues to break players out of their shells and encourage them to explore the realm of imagination.

“You get to step out of your real life and do something magical,” Dzadek says. Ω

Anthony Arevalo “I didn’t do any work for five, six years,” Anthony Arevalo said recently. “I was at the Bike by Project. I’m not good at balancing multiple Brad Bynum things. So when I was there, I was all in.”

The artist was so dedicated to the Reno bradb@ news re view.c om Bike Project, the local bicycle-oriented nonprofit organization, that, for that time, he put all of his energy into the nonprofit and made no artwork. But, when he stopped working at the RBP, he decided it was time to dive headfirst back into making art.

He went from creating no artwork to We Share a thing is on display at the hub a sudden ubiquity in the valley. It’s been about 18 months since he left the RBP, and like an athlete getting back into shape, he said it took him about a year to get back into practice.

The title We Share a Thing is a reference to a song by the band Cloud Nothings, but it also refers to the autobiographical inspirations of each of the dozen mixed media assemblages in the exhibition, each of which was inspired by a particular person and an experience that Arevalo shared with them. Viewers with an eye toward art history might be reminded of the American sculptor Joseph Cornell’s boxes, in which carefully composed collections of found objects create singular dioramas.

Arevalo’s sculptures combine found objects with sometimes heavily crafted and sanded wood. A recurring object found in most of these sculptures are trophies, often inexpensive ones given to child athletes— for things like “most improved” on the second grade soccer team.

“I found a bunch of old trophies, and I was just going to throw them away,” he said. “But then I thought, I really like these forms. I think I can use them.”

The trophies include birds and winged figures making unmistakable gestures of victory and triumph.

“That worked with the idea of paying homage to people that I had these experiences with,” he said. The trophy was an accessible symbol, a way to commemorate and celebrate the people honored in each sculpture.

The piece “She Covered Her Eyes and Turned Away” features three motorcycle trophies, toy-sized motorcycle riders, with front wheels kicked up and appearing to drive into and destroy a wooden plank. It’s an immobile assemblage that creates the illusion of loud, violent motion. The title is a reference to Arevalo’s mother’s terrified reactions to his grandfather’s motorcycle races in the 1970s. Arevalo’s grandfather was also a carpenter, who worked with power tools, and that career is honored by the action of the motorcycles in “She Covered Her Eyes,” as well as in another,

more serene piece, “Papa,” which proudly displays lumber crayons, stacked wood and a motorcycle trophy in a very Cornelllike fashion.

Another piece, “Tim Blake is an Audiologist,” an ode to the Reno audiologist and musician, contains very rough, jagged, splintery wood, with nails poking out of it.

“I find it interesting that Tim has this very professional job, but then I see him at rock ’n’ roll shows, or hang out with him at his house, and that rawness is there all the time with him, but Monday through Friday, 9 to 5, he goes to his real job,” said Arevalo.

Even though the work is intensely autobiographical, Arevalo hopes that viewers will appreciate the work aesthetically, and perhaps be intrigued by the narrative titles and hidden symbolic importance, or at least enjoy the contrast between carefully crafted sculptures made from seemingly haphazard materials, and the precious, loving presentation of rough and raw objects. Out by the pool is the lunch restaurant, by Dave Preston featuring traditional barbecue, woodfired oven-baked pizzas and seasonal beverages. The executive chef is Stanley Miller and this potentate of pots and pans is a thoroughbred in the chefdom world.

Starting at age 13, working in his father’s butcher shop, he followed his passion for baking and graduated from Johnson and Wales in Charlotte, North Carolina. His resume reads like a fine dining Americana tour: CreoLa in New Orleans, Bacchanalia in Atlanta, Marriott Marquis Time Square NYC, Vix at South Beach in Miami, the Ritz-Carlton Orland, and now this jewel at Northstar.

a backyard picnic feel. There are 10 custom libations at $14 each, including Zephyr Refresher with Grey Goose, St. Germain, cucumber and lime juice, and Lady Lavender with Hendricks Gin, Cointreau, lavender, orange marmalade and lemon juice.

A few wines by-the-glass ($12$16) and some interesting beers on tap, in growlers and bottled. Since I ate at the barbecue, I tried one of the beers, Take-a-Hike IPA 16 oz. ($6) from Block 3 Brewing out of Ontario, Canada. It wasn’t too hoppy with a citrusy finish. There’s a frozen drink machine and shaved ices with, of course, house-made syrups—blueberry, strawberry and others.

The meat fell off the ribs (half a rack $21). Apple-wood smoked and four house-made sauces, from tangy sweet to bitter, allow you to create your own flavor profiles. I tried a dab of each and all had distinctive, flavorful tastes.

The Carson Sausage Factory make them a jalapeño cheddar sausage ($16) which is smoked and topped with ale—soaked sauerkraut and amazing grain mustard mixed in to give your palate a ride in flavors and textures. Sharp-tart, smoky heat and a rich finish backed by the cheddar makes this link memorable.

The pulled pork sandwich ($18) is over the top with flavor. It’s a bone-in pork butt smoked for 18 hours until the bone pulls out. The rub includes paprika, cayenne, black pepper, garlic, chili powder, oregano, brown sugar and salt. All sides are extra at $5 each, and I tried them all. The slaw was memorable, purple cabbage marinated in an apple cider vinegar, sugar, celery seed and mustard powder dressing, tart with a savory zing.

For those who are coffee aficionados, the coffee shop serves Blue Bottle coffee ($4.50). For those who have never heard of this quaff, it’s the single-cup-at-a-time brewed liquid black gold standard of java.

It’s summer, and it’s an easy drive to Northstar. Have an adventure and find this new place to eat. Know that the prices are not for the faint of wallet, but you pay for a memorable foodie experience with excellent food and super service—where you’re made to feel special, and in a magnificent Sierra setting. César Ritz and Georges Escoffier would approve. Ω

Arguably America’s great luxury hotel chain—its parent company is Marriott—everything is at top shelf level. I was shown the custom-built meat smoker from a company in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and then the custom-built pizza oven. Then I got a sniff of the three proprietary rubs for the meats and poultry. I got a tour of the on-site herb garden and root vegetable garden. Are you getting the picture? The Ritz has a standard, creates and meets expectations, and yes, has a bit higher prices. These accoutrements make the Ritz’s kitchens the epitome of restauranteuring.

That being said, all the food they served me, I ate with my hands. The menu ($14-$29) includes sandwiches, burgers, brisket, pork, chicken, ribs, salmon and flatbread pizza ($18 each).

Guardians of the Galaxy Guardians of the Galaxy is a goofy, dazzling, often hilarious convergence of inspired nuttiness.

You’ll probably hear comparisons to the original Star Wars, The Fifth Element and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, and all of those comparisons would be plausible. It’s a blessedly new and crazy direction for the Marvel universe, and director James Gunn (Super, Slither) has taken a by huge step towards the A-list.

Bob Grimm Also taking a giant leap towards the upper echelon of Hollywood royalty is Chris Pratt, b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m who mixes great charm, rugged action hero bravado and premium comic timing as Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord. After a prologue that shows the Earthly origins of his character, Pratt sets the tone for the movie during the opening credits, grooving to his cassetteplaying Sony Walkman on an alien planet and using squirrelly little critters as stand-in microphones.

4 Very Good

After unknowingly stealing a relic that could have the power to take down the entire universe, Quill finds himself in serious trouble.

Events lead to his joining forces with a genetically enhanced Raccoon named Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper), a gigantic tree person thing named Groot (voice of Vin Diesel), a muscle-bound angry alien named Drax (Dave Bautista) and an ass-kicking green woman named Gamora (Zoe Saldana).

Together, they become the Guardians of the Galaxy, an unlikely troupe of mischievous outcasts that plays like the Avengers meets the Marx Brothers. Well, if the Marx Brothers had a green sister. Hey, it’s a decent comparison.

Quill is Groucho, Rocket is Chico and Groot is Harpo. Groot only has one line, “I am Groot!” while Harpo only had the honking horn. I’d say Gamora is Zeppo, but that would be slagging on Gamora.

The cast, buoyed by a spirited script co-written by Gunn, keeps things zippy and always funny. Visually, the movie is a tremendous feat of special and makeup effects.

If you see it in 3-D, you’ll be happy with the results, because every shot of this movie seems meticulously constructed to benefit the medium. As for the makeup, just as much energy has been put into the practical effects as the digital work.

Michael Rooker, playing bad guy Yondu, looks especially cool with his blue skin and ragged yellow teeth. Josh Brolin shows up briefly as Thanos, a major villain in the Marvel universe, while the likes of John C. Reilly, Djimon Hounsou, Glenn Close and Benicio Del Toro also chip in.

With her presence here, and her work in Star Trek and Avatar, Saldana has officially inherited the Queen of Science Fiction mantle from Sigourney Weaver—and, let’s admit it, she’s incredibly hot when she’s blue or green. Pratt establishes his leading man status here, something that could be fully cemented with his turn in a Jurassic Park sequel next year.

While Guardians is a terrific visual spectacle, it also packs an emotional punch. Rocket delivers a speech about alienation that’s far more moving than anything you’d expect to see in a movie like this, while Quill’s mommy issues also fuel some surprising emotional moments.

The cast does some real acting, with Cooper’s feat being especially impressive in that we only hear his voice. Heck, even Vin Diesel packs a sentimental punch in the many ways he delivers his “I am Groot!” line.

It must be noted that the use of classic rock on the soundtrack is a brilliant touch. Quill’s old school Walkman, which is still working decades after he left Earth, churns out the hits like “Hooked on a Feeling, “Moonage Daydream” and “Cherry Bomb.” Like Wes Anderson and Martin Scorsese before him, Gunn is quite adept at using great music in unexpected places.

Note for note, Guardians of the Galaxy rivals Edge of Tomorrow and Godzilla for the summer’s best blockbusters. As for its place in the Marvel universe, I’m going to put it right alongside The Avengers as the company’s best.

A sequel has already been greenlit for 2017, so this blissfully bizarre story shall continue. Ω

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Hercules

Dwayne Johnson, following the likes of Steve Reeves, Kevin Sorbo and Arnold Schwarzenegger, steps into the role of Son of Zeus. Actually, this film suggests that the title character might not be immortal, and is part of a scam. It’s one of the many sly touches that make this movie enjoyable. Johnson is good in the lead, and his band of battle disciples includes Ian McShane and Rufus Sewell in fine form. It’s directed by Brett Ratner, the man who got himself into trouble with legions of rabid fans for screwing up X-Men: The Last Stand. (I didn’t think it was that bad.) Ratner does a lot with a medium-sized budget. (Yes, $100 million for a blockbuster is medium these days.) The movie looks good, and is quite clever at times. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting this to be much good given its pedigree, but the results are kind of enjoyable. Johnson has developed into a fun movie star, and Ratner can make a decent movie, even if he is the guy responsible for the Rush Hour films.

Lucy

What starts out as a potentially great movie winds up being a merely good one in the end. Scarlett Johansson stars as the title character, an American living in Taiwan who gets mixed up with the wrong people and winds up not only a drug mule, but a drug mule with a highly experimental drug placed inside her lower stomach. When the drugs start to leak, Lucy winds up using her brain to full capacity, not only resulting in her ability to control her body but also the forces around her. Luc Besson directs with his usual visual competence, and Johansson is great in the title role. The problem keeping the film from greatness is that it feels as if it’s going to some great place, and then suddenly ends at 89 minutes. Granted, it’s a good 89 minutes, but I was left feeling a bit unfulfilled. Morgan Freeman shows up as a scientist who knows a lot about brains, while Min-sik Choi (the original Oldboy) plays a true bastard of a bad guy. Surely, the premise is total bullshit, but the resultant mayhem is fun bullshit at that.

I just wish Besson had a more complete story to tell.

The Purge: Anarchy

Last year’s The Purge was a good premise backed up by a boring slog of a movie. This sequel, delivered just a year later, is a better movie. Now, I’m not saying it’s a good movie, for it is not. It’s a better movie with a lot of problems. It starts mere hours before the annual Purge, a one-day holiday where citizens of the United States are allowed to put their cherished arsenals to use. Yes, murder is legal for a day in this universe, although certain types of explosives are strictly prohibited. This is sort of the Magnolia or Crash of Purge movies, in that we see a lot of story lines involving multiple

characters eventually converging. Frank Grillo plays the most interesting of those characters, a vengeful man gathering up some heavy artillery and taking to the streets on Purge night. The whole affair feels like a bit of a John Carpenter rip-off, and not the good John Carpenter, but the fair-to-middling John Carpenter. Now, that’s better than watching Ethan Hawke mope around his house and having tense conversations through his front door for an entire film, but it still doesn’t feel fresh.

Sex Tape

Once upon a time, there was a director with a very promising career. In 1998, Jake Kasdan made his directorial debut with the excellent Zero Effect, one of that year’s best movies. It still stands as one of Ben Stiller’s best efforts, and Kasdan even wrote the thing. Since then, I’ve been following all of his releases and they have gotten progressively worse (Orange County, Walk Hard, Bad Teacher). Now comes this mess starring Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz, an ugly comedy that tries to get laughs out of people being very, very uncomfortable. The two play a husband and wife who don’t know how to have sex with each other anymore, so they make a video using an iPad. Then, that video syncs up with a bunch of other iPads that they gave away as gifts, so a bunch of friends and family are at risk of seeing them naked and sweaty. Somehow, Kasdan manages to work in an overlong bit of Segel getting attacked by a dog, while supporting stars like Rob Corddry and Rob Lowe labor for laughs.

The film feels like a flat, dated and shameless piece of advertising for Apple—who must be seriously regretting the decision to allow their product placement in this movie—and internet porn. Let it be known that Diaz and Segel look and sound absolutely disgusting when they are making out.

The motion-capture apes take another step toward world domination in a sequel just as good as its predecessor, and certainly a step forward when it comes to pure, unadulterated ass-kicking ape action. The movie picks up 10 years after a well-meaning doctor played by James Franco first shot an experimental drug into a chimp and unintentionally initiated the end of the human race.

Caesar (Andy Serkis doing his motion-capture best) is leading a group of genetically modified apes in the redwoods near the Golden Gate Bridge. Life is good, and the humans have seemingly disappeared thanks to the Simian Flu brought on by the Franco character’s experiments. As it turns out, some humans have survived, led by Gary Oldman’s frustrated Dreyfus, who fears the humans will soon run out of fuel for their generators. There’s a chance for some hydraulic power via a dam in the woods, a dam that just happens to be near the apes compound. A band of humans led by Malcolm (Jason Clarke) sets out to repair the dam, stumbles upon the apes, and those apes aren’t happy to see them. Koba, an ape who figured prominently in the first film, returns, and he has no interest in a peaceful existence with humans. So, they fight, and they fight in glorious and exciting fashion.

Matt Reeves, who directed Cloverfield, Let Me In and the vastly underrated The Pallbearer, proves a more than ample choice for this movie. He’s already been announced for the sequel, due two years from now.

Tammy

Having co-written this movie, Melissa McCarthy can take a lot of the blame for yet another bad comedy featuring her playing an uninteresting mess of a human being. She stars as the title character, a fast food worker who wrecks her car, gets fired and finds out her husband (Nat Faxon) is having an affair in the same day. She winds up hitting the road with her alcohol-swilling, diabetic grandma (Susan Sarandon), and virtually nothing works as far as laughs are concerned. McCarthy and Ben Falcone’s script (Falcone also directs) tries to mine laughs out of grandma being a trashy party girl and Tammy eating too much pie. It wastes the talents of everybody involved, including Gary Cole as a philandering barfly and Mark Duplass as Tammy’s love interest. When Tammy holds up her former burger joint employer, it’s almost funny, but most of that scene was covered in the preview trailer.

McCarthy can be hilarious—her best film moment may always be the outtake during the This is 40 credits—but she can also be tedious as she is in this and last year’s Identity Thief.

Her next film is St. Vincent co-starring Bill Murray, a film that will hopefully erase this one from our memories.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Director Michael Bay seems to be taunting his haters at this point, employing all of those things that sicken his detractors, and cranking everything up to disgusting levels. Replacing Shia LaBeouf is Mark Wahlberg. He plays Cade Yeager, a crazy robot inventor living on a farm with his smoking hot daughter, Tessa (Nicola Peltz).

After inadvertently buying Optimus Prime from an old guy at an abandoned movie theater (yep!), Yeager and his daughter wind up fighting alongside the Autobots as they battle an evil race of American-made Autobot clones courtesy of a Steve Jobs-like mogul (Stanley Tucci). The movie is a billion hours long, and none of those hours are ever any good. Some of the visuals pop, but you won’t care because you will be glazed over by the time most of the big action kicks up. If you should choose to see this one, make sure all of your bills are paid, and you’ve winter-proofed your house before you sit down, because you aren’t getting out of that theater for a very long time.

Super friends The Bonfire Set Life, the longest amount of time available to us, is framed by an eternity of nonexistence. A small window encompasses by Kent Irwin all we will ever know or experience.

Music, as with all forms of artistic expression, is an attempt to saturate each moment of our passing lives with meaning and feeling.

The Bonfire Set approach this concept in the first words of their new EP, the Jack Kerouac-inspired On The Road, by singing: “In a few years, we will all turn to dust.”

This meditation on impermanence is the prologue to the EP, which, far from a morbid elegy, is instead a celebration of life and love–our brief moment in the sun.

band. Anti-war protest, themes exploring the survival of love in an increasingly bleak geopolitical landscape, and guitar solos are The Bonfire Set’s currency as much as the melody and songwriting focus of indie folk.

On The Road was recorded by local heavyweight producer Tom Gordon, and mastered with his help

by Ed Brooks, who has worked with big names like Pearl Jam and Bright Eyes. The Bonfire Set’s fascination with '60s and '70s rock ’n’ roll is evident in the recording process, as they used vintage equipment to forge their own retro sound. Vintage microphones and recording equipment, and a bonafide Hammond organ are a few artifacts the band employs on its recordings. The idea behind the recording style is to meld past and present, to bring new meaning to some of the past’s most memorable sounds.

“I wanna redefine our generation’s view of music,” says Apostol. “We have to think about how pop music affects our culture. Everything is mass-produced and cheap. I think our music has the potential to be a breath of fresh air.”

The Bonfire Set was formed when a group of friends from high school decided to take a road trip together to Coachella. Inspired by the energy of the festival, they decided to start their own band.

The songwriting is influenced by indie rock and classic rock, but several members are also admirers of hip hop, which influences the band’s hierarchy. The Bonfire Set often feel more like a collective than a band. Members Denise Julian and Casey Frasca often provide the lead vocals of the songs. The ego distribution of the band is communal, as opposed to the traditional structure of “frontman and back-up players.”

Songs explode in choruses of many voices, like a choir, giving the impression that you’re listening to a big group of friends making music together. Ω

Singer and songwriter Jamil Apostol recalls his first time reading On The Road as a lifechanging experience. The Beat Generation classic has inspired many generations afterward to live in the moment and see as much of the world as possible, and it still finds relevance today in the hands of young musicians.

“I read it, and it just made me wanna tour, travel, live the life, you know?” says Apostol.

Apostol admits the members of The Bonfire Set are rookies as far as extensive touring is concerned, but the band is optimistic about their prospects abroad. Their music is joyful and adventurous, with the drive of rock music making it a perfect companion for a long road trip of any kind.

Lake Tahoe SummerFeST Under the direction of Maestro Joel Revzen, top players from some of the nation’s best symphonies gather at the annual classical music festival, which kicks off on Friday, Aug. 1. The opening concert on Aug. 1, features Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture “Fingal’s Cave,” Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 and Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horns and Strings featuring tenor Matthew Polenzani and Erik Ralske of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra on horns. The festival continues through Aug. 17 with concerts taking place at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 4 p.m. on Sunday. The performances take place in an outdoor acoustic tent on the campus of Sierra Nevada College, 999 Tahoe Blvd., Incline Village. Tickets range from $12.50 to $75. My girlfriend and I are mostly happy together, but we have this ongoing fight where she accuses me of wanting to cheat whenever I so much as glance at a woman she perceives to be my “type” (any woman roughly her age and ethnicity). Even flipping through a magazine that shows a woman in an ad is enough to set her off. She says I need to eliminate all contact with other women, or I’m being unfaithful. But I don’t see how I can stop doing things like talking to the checker at the supermarket.

It’s normal for a girlfriend to expect her boyfriend to “keep it in his pants.” Only yours wants your eyeballs in there, too, as she considers crossing the street with your eyes open a form of cheating.

When you love somebody, it isn’t exactly outrageous to fear losing them. And the suspicion that a partner is cheating can often be an instinctive response to subtle signs that they are. But such signs include flimsy excuses for working late or ducking into the hall closet to take phone calls—not merely daring to open a magazine that includes pictures of females who lack beaks, paws and tails.

There’s a good chance your girlfriend behaves this way because she has a giant crater where her self-worth is supposed to be. To be human is to have a tendency toward ridiculous, overblown fears, but we also have the capacity—gone unused in your girlfriend—to follow them up with a chaser of reason. The sad thing is, you might have compelled her to work on changing if

only you’d told her “enough is enough” instead of just wagging your tail while she tightened your choke collar.

Thanks to your enabling, there are now 300 of you in the relationship—you, your girlfriend and her 298 fears.

If you’d like to change that, wait for a moment when you aren’t being prosecuted for something and ask to talk about the relationship. Explain that you love her and want to be with her but that she’s increasingly pushing you away with her irrational and insulting accusations and behavior. Tell her that she’ll need to see a therapist and show meaningful improvement if she wants to keep you around. Cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps people use reason to solve emotional problems, is probably the best bet.

Give yourself a deadline, and reassess—maybe at the three-month mark—so you don’t keep getting used to crazy little by little until crazy becomes the new normal.

That’s how a guy ends up being the one apologizing when he comes home to a bonfire of his clothes, computer and Xbox after his girlfriend catches him in the act of smiling and thanking the supermarket checkout lady instead of staring at his shoes and wordlessly extending his palm for his change. Ω

American author James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) wrote 32 novels. In those pages, he crammed in almost 1,100 quotations from Shakespeare. What motivated such extreme homage? I suspect he regarded Shakespeare as a mentor and wanted to blend the Bard’s intelligence with his own. I invite you to do something similar, Gemini. What heroes have moved you the most? What teachers have stirred you the deepest? It’s a perfect time to pay tribute in a way that feels selfempowering. I suspect you will benefit from revivifying their influence on you.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Was there

an actual poet named Homer who wrote the ancient Greek epics The Iliad and The Odyssey? Or was “Homer” a fictitious name given to several authors who created those two master works? Whatever the case may be, we know that Homer plagiarized himself. The opening line of Book V in The Iliad is identical to the opening line of Book V in the Odyssey: “Now Dawn arose from her couch beside the lordly Tithonos, to bear light to the immortals and to mortal men.” So, should we be critical of Homer? Nah. Nor will I hold it against you if, in the coming days, you imitate some fine action or brilliant move you did in the past. It was great the first time. I’m sure it will be nearly as great this time, but in a different way.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): The Earth has been

around for almost 4.6 billion years. But according to scientists who study the fossil records, fire didn’t make its first appearance on our planet until 470 million years ago.

Only then were there enough land-based plants and oxygen to allow the possibility of fires arising naturally. Do the math and you will see that for 90 percent of the Earth’s history, fire was absent. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

Broadway is one of New York City’s main streets. It runs the length of the island of Manhattan. But hundreds of years ago, it was known by the indigenous Lenape people as the Wickquasgeck Trail. It was a passageway that cut through stands of chestnut, poplar and pine trees. Strawberries grew wild in fields along the route. Is there a metaphorical equivalent in your own life, Sagittarius? I think there is: a modest, natural path that you will ultimately build into a major thoroughfare buzzing with activity. Part of you will feel sad at the loss of innocence that results. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The

heavenly body known as (6178) 1986 DA is a near-Earth asteroid that’s 1.4 miles in diameter. It’s packed with 10,000 tons of gold and 100,000 tons of platinum, meaning it’s worth more than $5 trillion. Can we humans get to it and mine its riches? Not yet. That project is beyond our current technology.

But one day, I’m sure we will find a way. I’m thinking there’s a smaller-scale version of this scenario in your life, Capricorn. You know about or will soon find out about a source of wealth that’s beyond your grasp.

But I’m betting that in the next 10 months you will figure out a way to tap into it and begin the process.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “‘I just

sort of drifted into it.’” According to author Gore Vidal, “That’s almost always the explanation for everything.” But I hope this won’t be true for you anytime soon, Aquarius. You can’t afford to be unconscious or lazy or careless about what you’re getting yourself into. You must formulate a clear, strong intention and stick to it. I don’t mean that you should be overly cautious or ultra-skeptical.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Members of

the industrial band Skinny Puppy are upset with the U.S. military. They discovered that an interrogation team at America’s Guantanamo Bay detention camp tortured prisoners by playing their music at deafening volumes for extended periods.

That’s certainly true of a very small honey operation in Sun Valley that, after four years, produces enough to supply two stores that carry its product. Bee Buddies honey has an unusually wild taste and a different-from-store consistency.

What got you into this business?

Eight years ago or so, we were making honey wine—mead—and we made it for about three years, and I was buying honey from other beekeepers, and I thought, “Why don’t I try this myself?” And that’s what got us into doing the bees. I read every book in the library and bought the one that I thought was the best, that I could understand, and read it, and started keeping bees with two hives. Four years ago?

I noticed that your honey has a different taste from what I’m accustomed to with honey. What affects the taste of honey?

By now, we’ve all learned to take these future projections with monster doses of sodium. We’ve all experienced, repeatedly, how wrong they turn out to be. But why is this?

Why can’t we do any better with our carefully examined and prepared prognostications, backed as some are with substantial amounts of current and verifiable data?

Because they’re attempting to do something that’s basically impossible. Projections try to forecast how things will be based on how things are now. That’s all swell, but what projections can’t take into account are those things that will have happened by then, but haven’t happened yet. The curveballs of the unknown and unknowable, ruthless destroyers of all predictions. The one thing we can know for certain is that something unforeseen and unimaginable will happen between now and then that will completely mess everything up. I was reminded of this recently when I heard a noted and respected golf writer opine that Rory McIlroy just really doesn’t look to be much of a factor in the British Open. The writer gave his reasons for making this call, all solid and well-founded. And then McIlroy goes out and positively buries everybody, winning in fairly easy fashion.

On a grander scale, the same is true for the vast majority of our projections of life in the future. Whether these projections are for 2030, 2050 or 2100, in the end, they usually are nothing more than much-needed filler for media outlets that are constantly hungry for product of even mild interest. The actual veracity of this filler is completely inconsequential. Who gives a bleep if this jive is true? Who’s going to actually bother to check back and keep score? Here in the insanely demanding Information Age, news cycles need to be fed

that in 24 years, the computer gizmo revolution would stampede its way around the globe, making huge lifestyle changes in not just the U.S., but Venezuela and Mongolia?

So take it to the bank—something will be discovered or created that will be a game-changer on a planetary scale. We have no freakin’ idea at this time what it will be. Right now, millions of brains are working on millions of ideas, concepts and projects, many of which are bold, daring and mind-blowing. Sooner or later, at least one of these will hit. And stick.

And flourish like mad. When that takes place, nothing will ever be the same. And you’ll be able to go back, read the projections for 2030 written in 2014, and have a very nice chuckle indeed. Then, you’ll pop into your photosynthesis chamber and have a nice lunch of HNL (Human Nourishment Light). Ω
