Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I’ve complained about this before, but since we’re about to start tabulating the votes in our Biggest Little Best of Northern Nevada, I figure I’ll bring it up now before I have something real to complain about.

I had a pretty good, balancedif-hectic life until I started pursuing the second concurrent master’s degree. I had my reasons for doing them at the same time, but needless to say, I had to cut some things out of my life—gardening, drinking to excess, and going to the gym—in order to advance my plan.

Well, I’m sure all of you know what happens to people who lose balance. I grew gradually more stressed, and with me anyway, the stress increases gut fat. So I’m up to 235.

I’m putting the English master’s on hold for a semester, at which point, I hope to apply for the MFA in writing, using the stuff I have so far, as much of it as applies anyway.

We’ll see, though. There are no guarantees.

But to restore that balance that was stressing me out, I’ve added gardening and lifting weights back into the mix. Truth be told, I also added drinking to excess for a minute, but that was more of a “I’m on vacation!” sort of thing. Since I’ve got to lose about 30 pounds to feel comfortable in my skin, the booze will have to go about the time the semester starts.

Have I ever told you my theory of fat storage? My body can use four things for fuel—carbs, protein, fat, alcohol—and if I limit any two, I’ll lose weight.

Almost every diet is based on this premise, even those that claim to be based on calorie restriction, because they usually cut down fats and alcohol.

I’ll lift weights three times a week until school starts, and then I’ll drop to two. I hope to get back down to 205 by Thanksgiving.

I work out at SportsWest since the newspaper has trade there. Anyone who feels like focusing on their waistline for a few months is welcome to join me. Let’s make a plan.

Re “Save your money, dump the union” (Let Freedom Ring, July 3): If it wasn’t for unions, the average worker would still be working for the “company store,” with children in sweat shops and labor camps. The average wage would not be enough to pay for the room and board owed to the company. When the richest 1 percent of the world already control the majority of the wealth, the only thing that stands in the way of “monetary slavery” is a strong representative with a collective voice.

In ancient Egypt the Pharaohs, didn’t enslave the people with whips and chains. They kept the people poor and needy and used the whips and chains to punish the ones that rebelled.

Child development is economic development Re “Act accordingly” (Letters to the Editor, July 3): President Barack Obama has proposed and is fighting for a comprehensive early learning strategy to promote safe, quality settings to foster healthy child development for young children from birth through preschoolage. For many of the 11 million children under the age of 5, child care is their early learning setting. Yet, several studies have shown that state child-care policies are weak, and the fact is that most states earn a failing grade on basic protections such as health and safety. Fixing child care should be the cornerstone to any early learning vision for America. Parents need child care in order to work and a strong economy depends on working parents. The Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG), the federal law that allocates funds to states for child care and sets the framework for state child care laws, has not been reauthorized in 17 years.

This is an absolute disgrace. As Congress considers any early learning strategy this year, fixing child care needs to be the cornerstone. Safe, quality child care is an economic development strategy for every

Martinez has lost faith Re “Put school district under glass” (Editorial, July 10): I agree with your article. Mike Mieras has done an outstanding job for 20 years. He proved himself over and over again with the Sparks Middle School shooting. Parents, staff, students and even Martinez along with Barbara Clark praised him. If the school board knew about this then they have also lied to the public as they have said they knew nothing about this. And voters should remember to not vote for them. The board should rehire Mieras and take a long hard look at what Martinez has done. He stated he was going in a new direction with the department! Why wasn’t the board informed of the new direction? Parents and community members should voice their opinions to the board members and show up to the next board meeting! We want Mike Mieras back.

The gateway food Re “Lost Dowd in high weeds” (Notes from the Neon Babylon, July 10): Great column regarding marijuana edibles. Just as most people have to suffer the seriously unpleasant effects of alcohol poisoning before they truly understand how to use that well known drug, so do people need to learn how to dose themselves on edibles.

As one who suffered an MJ overdose more than 40 years ago, I have been absolutely gun shy around pot munchies. One of the best things that should come out of legalization is an understanding of dosage, regulated content and potency of edibles.

I can’t wait. I would love to be able to eat just enough to relax me to sleep.

Know yourself

Re “Corporations are people, just like us” (Left Foot Forward, July 10): The U.S. Supreme Court did not rob women of their rights, but protected the rights of closely-held corporations, like Hobby Lobby.

Some reporters have chosen to “spin” the ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby. Female employees still have access to and the privilege to use contraceptives, but not on company dime for private, for-profit corporations whose owners morally object to abortifacients.

Truly, this wouldn’t be an issue if Americans had stopped President Obama from enacting health care reform. Health care reform is more costly and in more ways than previously disclosed, as this case demonstrates. Cases such as this are inevitable now that the government has been allowed to decide that every citizen is required to be insured, all of which of course requires oversight and regulation. State-mandated health care threatens to burden the budget and the effective operation of the government in manifold respects.

We’ve been fighting a war on poverty with welfare since 1964, and all we’ve managed to do is burden the state and foster a poverty mentality among what was previously the most entrepreneurial and innovative people society in the modern world! Health care reform is simply more government when America needs less! Truly, less is more!

The court decision is not a tragedy.

You’re being dramatic. It’s worth repeating: Female employees still have access to and the privilege to use contraceptives, but not on company dime for private, for-profit corporations whose owners morally object to abortifacients.

That over one million unborn children are murdered annually and only 1 percent are a result of rape is tragic.

Re “Lost Dowd in high weeds” (Notes from the Neon Babylon, July 10): Let’s remember that dumbass Dowd gobbled an entire edible that was clearly marked as a 16-dose edible. Hell, that kind of edible dose would would have given Rasta Bob Marley heart palpitations. I have been a California medical cannabis patient since 1998 and now, after recent heart surgery and a complication or two, I can not vaporize flowers ever again, and I depend entirely on edibles and tinctures for pain medication. Kiva Bars used to be one of my favorites, and I could handle half of a rectangle regularly. My problem with Kiva was they couldn’t produce a strain-specific product. I can only use Indica strains as Sativas make my heart race, and I don’t like the feelings Sativas produce.

Indicas have the pain relief qualities I need. My usual daily dosage is 20-25 mg three times a day. Any knowledgeable cannabis user knows that you start with a very small piece of whatever edible you chose, wait at least an hour to 90 minutes then adjust accordingly.

The labels are already accurate, you just have to know your tolerance ahead of time. Even knowing your tolerance may be high to smoked or vaporized flowers has no relation to your tolerance to edibles. I hope Nevada finally gets its act together, gets some dispensaries open and starts helping patients get access to the excellent medicine they need.

Educational principles People without children are probably wondering why in the world we’d have our annual Back to School issue on July 24. It’s because the school year changed! The first day of school is Aug. 11 this year.

That’s right. Remember how you used to get so bored during those last weeks of summer when there was nothing left to do except swim, play video games, meet new people, experiment with drugs and alcohol, go to the mall, read Jacqueline Susann, and fall in love? With the new schedule, those days of mindnumbing freedom are over, and kids can get right back to school to learn their place in society.

Really, while the extra days off during the school year are great, there are those of us who believe life is not just about becoming competitive in the world workforce, and those final days of summer chillin’ are among our best memories of childhood and young adulthood.

Public education has become very politicized. As much as liberals hated George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind, conservatives hate Barack Obama’s Common Core. The hatred is to some degree misplaced in both instances.

Many people argue that kids on average lag a bit after getting a long summer break. And that may be true, but as is often pointed out, children in Asian countries like Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong have up to 20 percent fewer instructional hours, and they still out-perform us in areas of math and science. So it’s not all about the hours spent in school.

My fourth grade teacher. Her name was Miss Costello. She was just really energetic, and she really cared about all of us. … Teachers like that really take the initiative to get to their students.

This doesn’t prove any kind of causation—less school makes kids smarter—but it does suggest something about U.S. society and our approach toward education. One of our biggest problems is that many of our people don’t value education for education’s sake.

We treat education like it’s all about learning things so we can get a job so we will be productive. But that mindset goes a long way toward creating a society that doesn’t encourage us to continue our educations after the day’s work. We treat education like a job.

Therefore, our children have earned entertainment when they’re home with the family.

The way we spend our evening hours when school is in session is a good illustration of why children seem to take a step back in learning after a long summer break. We treat summer break as a reward for a hard school year. Again, we act as though we’ve earned a reprieve from the horrible task of learning—not thinking is a reward for thinking.

We aren’t suggesting that Washoe County School District go back to long summer vacations, although many of us will remember them fondly. What we are suggesting is that parents who take an active interest in their own educations are sure to inspire a child’s interest in learning. Education should be a lifelong pursuit, both to improve the mind and to have a better society. It’s fun to learn a new skill or to enrich your knowledge about things you enjoy doing or knowing.

Back to school doesn’t just have to be about the kids.

Finally, don’t speed in the school zones and watch out for children in the crosswalks. Ω

How about strength through quality?

Riding a bike along the Truckee early on a weekend morning is one of the best reasons to live in west Reno. The air is cool and crisp, the river is alive with wildlife and fishermen, and joggers, dog walkers, hikers and bikers amicably share the winding narrow path under the cottonwoods. by Everyone seems happy to live here.

Sheila Leslie Critics say Reno has a seedy reputation. and if you find yourself in one section of downtown Virginia Street amid the array of cheap souvenir shops and aggressive panhandlers with yesterday’s trash blowing into the gutter, it’s hard to argue with that characterization.

But it doesn’t take much effort to find beauty and serenity along the riverbank, framed by the nearby Sierra and the promise of Tahoe just over the hill. Local coffee shops like Dreamers and Java Jungle are filled with an eclectic clientele sharing conversation and free wifi along with a strong cup of joe. And during Artown, there’s a creative energy around every downtown corner.

“Seedy” is a word that would never be used to describe this Reno that most of us experience every day. Yet we’ve convinced ourselves that outsiders just see the less attractive parts of the city and will only consider moving their businesses here if we give them a big chunk of our tax treasury.

Nearly every candidate running for office talks about strengthening the economy by promoting Reno as a tax haven for business. Hardly anyone speaks of improving the quality of life for the citizens already here by enhancing public transportation or creating opportunities for young people through subsidized apprenticeships.

You hear about incentivizing businesses to grow Midtown but not much about revitalizing neighborhoods a little further from downtown where rents are cheaper and many houses still have the blue tape of foreclosure slapped on the front door.

Instead of promoting Reno’s natural advantages to new companies, business leaders focus on secret

deals involving bigger and better tax incentives to compete with surrounding states, ignoring the fact that the absence of a corporate tax in Nevada hasn’t yet succeeded in drawing these businesses here.

One has to wonder if it makes sense, or if it’s even fair, to subsidize one business over another in the name of job creation.

In reality, the race to subsidize corporate profits doesn’t work very well. It seems the RenoSparks Convention & Visitors Authority is already dialing back its efforts to recruit moviemakers to Washoe County after a fruitless two years of effort and a $150,000 investment.

As reported by Anjeanette Damon of the Reno Gazette-Journal, the RSCVA reduced its film budget by 65 percent, dedicating just $28,000 to the cause this year.

The quasi-governmental agency, dedicated to drawing more tourists to town, hasn’t enticed any film projects despite the $20 million Hollywood giveaway approved by

the 2013 Legislature on the advice of actor Nicolas Cage.

The RSCVA’s special film consultant insists he has three projects in the works, but can’t give specifics since they’re competing for the state subsidy. Presumably, if they don’t get enough of our tax dollars, they’ll make their film elsewhere.

If we’re going to use our money to create jobs, why not invest in jobs that benefit society at large, instead of corporate shareholders?

Teachers, construction workers and firefighters will spend their salaries locally and their work will strengthen our community.

Proponents of the movie subsidies point to a decision by the producers of Mall Cop 2 to film in Southern Nevada as proof the program works. But in a state that can’t fund its schools or universities properly, not to mention such basics as mental health, programs for autistic children, or repairs to an aging infrastructure, is Mall Cop 2 worth $4.2 million of our taxes? Ω

Question 3 is bad for business Freedom lovers owe Democratic state Sen. Tick Segerblom of Las Vegas for steering the new medical marijuana law through the Legislature.

However, in recent television interviews he revealed his other more rigidly progressive side that doesn’t much care for property by Brendan rights, low taxes, or Nevada’s Trainor future as a business-friendly, small government state.

Segerblom supports the teachers’ union margin tax initiative because, you know, Democrats can’t get a real tax bill through the Legislature with that pesky three-fourths super majority constitutional amendment that tyrannizes the majority, etc. etc. What he overlooks is that the Democrats had that three-fourths super majority vote in recent years but failed to get any of the tax raises he loves. I guess a Nevada Democrat doesn’t always vote like a California Democrat.

around the Nevada Legislature. If Democrats can’t get tax increases through the Legislature, they will just get their progressive army to do the heavy lifting with an initiative.

Initiative drives, a Progressive Era invention, were originally conceived as a way to make government bigger when the old liberal order legislatures wouldn’t.

Segerblom is more confident this initiative will pass than other tax increases on business schemes the teachers’ union has backed because the “demographics” are changing, and he sees Nevada transforming into something resembling the social democratic paradise that is California. Why, he can see Los Angeles from his balcony!

“Demographics” is politispeak for Latinos, of course. Fiesta Las Vegas has a growing Latino population, and Segerblom thinks that means Democratic policies forever. He has a point, as the Republicans have gone out of their way to insult, ignore and threaten Latinos in recent years. Even

today the Unaccompanied Minor Childrens’ Crusade has brought the worst nativism out on the right.

Local talk show hosts and callers are in agreement: Of course we can build that wall on the border!

The Russkies built the Berlin Wall, didn’t they? Republicans in a few decades have stopped proudly quoting Ronald Reagan’s famous challenge: “Mr. Gorbachov, tear down this wall!” to instead parrot Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s: “Godgang it, Obama, build up that wall!”

But even as badly as they have done so far, there is still time for Republicans to mend, rather than build, some fences with Latinos.

Because, after all, we are all Americans, and even more, all human beings. If Republicans are correct that most Americans are inherently center right, then it is up to them to fashion a center right message that attracts Latinos.

Studies have suggested that the bright red line they cannot cross is talk of mass- or “self” deportation.

Latinos, like everyone else, want fair and just laws. But if Republicans think that Latinos will support a party that will take a father from his family and send him back to his country to get back into a queue that actually doesn’t exist, they are playing right into Democrats’ hands.

Rising Democratic Latino star Lucy Flores, running for lieutenant governor this fall, is on record opposing the margin tax. Latino immigrants, like all immigrants to America, have a high percentage of entrepreneurs. More taxes and regulations will not necessarily make their lives any better. They can be pitched with the liberty message, if it is sincere and respectful enough.

Republicans who really want a color blind society, open to newcomers as well, will have to change their rhetoric, stop obsessing over closing the borders, and figure out a marketoriented, limited government, Constitution-based immigration system soon. Ω

After a Utah criminal prosecution accused him of nothing, commentators on the right have implied U.S. Sen. Harry Reid is being protected by the Obama administration.

Good news/bad news Joblessness in Nevada is up to second in the nation, at 7.7 percent. Only Rhode Island has a higher percentage of unemployed.

That actually represents a gain by Nevada, in the sense that joblessness in the state in June fell by .02 percent since May and 2.3 percent since the same month of 2013. The national figure is 6.3.

Congress has been deadlocked on an extension of jobless pay for long-term unemployed for months. U.S. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada last week told a Capitol Hill newspaper, “Well, there’s a chance,” about the possibility of attaching the extension to an emergency spending measure.

Larry Wissbeck 1939-2104 Larry Wissbeck, a western broadcasting legend who reported from the Pacific Northwest, Pacific Coast, and Nevada, died July 17 in Colorado.

Wissbeck was raised in central Nevada, in the now-abandoned mining camp of Nevada Scheelite and Fallon. He recalled watching a 1950s atomic test flash from Scheelite.

He worked as a reporter, field producer, commentator, photographer and in other roles at the Fallon Eagle Standard, KTVN and KOLO television stations in Reno, KGW television in Portland, KRON television in San Francisco, and also served as chief deputy secretary of state of Nevada and town board member and mayor pro tem of Paonia, Colorado.

At KRON and KTVN, he was a member of what some now characterize as the strongest news teams of those operations’ histories.

In Nevada, he is particularly well known for the reports he filed from KTVN’s Northern Nevada WISSBECK AT KOLO Bureau. He traveled the state in a small Courier pickup with a camper on the back, bringing colorful human-interest stories back to Reno from places like Tuscarora or Baker. He once returned to Nevada Scheelite to report on its abandoned state. The term “Northern Nevada” was defined flexibly, as Wissbeck reported from Laughlin to the Oregon border.

Ed Pearce, who as a news director hired him at two different stations and gave him the Northern Nevada Bureau, once noted that Wissbeck did well in the human interest reports because he fit right in when he showed up in small county settings. He was instantly at home in a dance hall in McDermitt or a bar in Tonopah.

He also handled hard news, including a long-running series of investigative pieces on the bankruptcy of a Reno investment firm and bombings of the U.S. Capitol in 1983 and Harvey’s Hotel Casino at Lake Tahoe in 1980. His diverse skills showed up when, as one of a two-person bureau covering the Democratic National Convention in San Francisco for KTVN in 1984, he repaired equipment himself when it failed.

He owned and lived at Hardscrabble Farm on the bank of the Truckee River in Lockwood where he lived. Peggy Phillip, who began her television career at KTVN, and her family were tenants on the farm for a time. She went on to become a distinguished television news director at stations in Kansas City, Baltimore, Syracuse and Memphis and is now a managing editor in Miami.

She said she learned a lot from Wissbeck.

“Larry seemed to have all the answers from storytelling to Nevada history, animal husbandry to art,” she said after hearing of his death. “I was fascinated with his knowledge and loved to listen to his tales of TV news coverage in San Francisco and Portland. ... I sometimes felt like a sponge around him, trying to absorb all the great qualities that made him such a complex human being.”

Media target Utah criminal case used against Reid U.S. Sen. Harry Reid’s name is figuring in a developing courtroom battle in Utah.

On July 15, former Utah attorneys by general John Swallow and Mark Dennis Myers Shurtleff were arrested and charged with crimes like destruction of evidence and acceptance of bribes.

Swallow was further accused of receiving $23,000 from Richard Rawle, who he introduced to federally indicted businessman Jeremy Johnson as someone who could assist in getting Reid to help with a Federal Trade Commission investigation into

Simarjit Gill salt Lake district attorney Johnson’s marketing company. “I talked with John Swallow, and he said you might have some connections to Reid that might be helpful to us,” Johnson wrote in an email to Rawle cited in the indictment. Rawle is now deceased.

In a statement in January released by his office, Reid said, “The allegations of bribery by Mr. Johnson, a man with a background of fraud, deception and corruption, are absurd and utterly false.” A Reid aide reiterated that posture last week.

The court filings describe Reid as essentially a passive figure in the case—as a target of wrongdoing, not a wrongdoer. He was so portrayed in most mainstream news coverage. But he could still be damaged, because some opinion entities and an occasional mainstream source—in reports filled with emotionally loaded terms and suggestive language—projected the available information far beyond its actual meaning. For example, an Associated Press story on the case included the line, “Reid has not been implicated in the investigation.” But a Washington Times story that tried hard to build a case against Reid did not include a similar description of the indictments.

The indictments followed months in which the case was shuttled around in the Beehive State. While the crimes being prosecuted are state offenses, local district attorneys did not initially act, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) took itself off the case in September, and the current Utah attorney general also declined the case. So the Utah Legislature mounted an investigation. It was not explained why the lawmakers didn’t leave the case to the local district attorneys—who ultimately were forced to act—but partisans were quick to suggest that the Obama administration refused the case to protect Reid. The issue has become prominent enough that the National

Law Journal did a story on that aspect of the case.

There was wide comment on alleged inertia on the part of the DOJ in joining the case. In a state whose officials normally object to federal authority, local prosecutors have been critical of the failure of the U.S. Department of Justice to step into the case.

“I’d be less than honest with you if I didn’t say to you that I have actually been very disappointed with what the DOJ did or didn’t do,” said Salt Lake County District Attorney Simarjit Gill, a Democrat. “Really, this case should not be something that we should be prosecuting as local prosecutors.”

The charges were announced

by Gill and Davis County District Attorney Troy Rawlings at the Salt Lake City office of the FBI, which itself drew comment since no federal prosecution is underway. One report suggested the FBI was trying to give its imprimatur to the case in spite of the DOJ’s stance.

A considerable amount of media coverage tries to link Reid negatively to the case. Not surprisingly, a lot of that kind of coverage was produced by conservative opinion sites, such as NewsBusters (“ABC Investigates Bribery Case Ensnaring Harry Reid...”) and Washington Free Beacon (“Harry Reid Tied to Corruption Investigation”).

Contrasts Reid’s role, if any, has received considerably more attention in national and D.C. media entities than where the case is happening—Utah.

In a lengthy Salt Lake Tribune story describing the case, Reid’s name received a single mention in paragraph 19 of the story, a paragraph dealing with the one count of the indictment that mentions him. In an ABC News story, by contrast, Reid is referenced in the first sentence—and nine more times throughout the story.

The Unification Church’s Washington Times newspaper allowed its editor John Solomon— long faulted by press critics for his factually challenged stories on Reid (“Solomon-like reporting,” RN&R, Nov. 23, 2006)—to cover the Utah story.

The Columbia Journalism Review has reported that journalists working for Solomon say “he often pressured them to mold the truth to his vision of the story” and that in one story accusing Reid of serving

disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff on two legislative issues, Solomon “failed to mention … that Reid stuck to his longstanding position on both issues—meaning that any implications of influence peddling were bogus.” When working for the Washington Post, Solomon targeted Reid on major alleged exposés that failed to close the deal—“‘gotcha’ without the gotcha,” the Post’s ombudsman put it.

Solomon put Reid in the lead sentence of his story: “Utah prosecutors on Tuesday filed criminal charges against two former state attorneys general in a court filing that makes tantalizing references to a possible pay-to-play influence scheme involving U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.”

By contrast, another churchowned newspaper—the Deseret News in Salt Lake City, on the scene of the story—left its first mention of Reid to paragraph 23, one of just two mentions of the Nevada senator in the 60-paragraph story. The newspaper is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Solomon story mentioned Reid in the headline (“Harry Reid’s name surfaces in Utah bribery case against two former attorneys general”), but not Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, referenced in a similar

context in the court filings, who actually met with Johnson.

While Reid is not accused of anything, he could end up being nibbled to death by ducks in the dispute. He faces the kind of situation that plagued another Nevada senator in 1982. A Teamsters Union president and four other men were on trial for trying to bribe U.S. Sen. Howard Cannon of Nevada, who chaired the Senate Commerce Committee and—until Reid’s rise—was the most powerful senator

Cannon was never accused of wrongdoing, but the steady drumbeat of daily news coverage of the sordid testimony from the trial in Chicago was lethal to his reputation. He lost to a much lesser known Republican, Chic Hecht, whose subsequent Senate career became legendary for its oneterm exposition of his limitations. Ω

Teens working on environmental, conservation projects

For about a month, four teens from South Central Los Angeles are giving up summer vacation time to work with the Nature Conservancy in Nevada on environmental and conservation work in the Carson Valley. by Sage The four students are from the Environmental Charter High School Leehey in Lawndale, California, and were selected as interns in the Leaders in Environmental Action for the Future (LEAF) program. This program is s age l@ news review.c om a partnership between TNC, the Toyota Foundation and environmentally themed high schools across the country. The students and teachers come from the schools, the majority of the funding comes from the Toyota Foundation, and TNC provides staff and the locations for the students to work on.

“LEAF supplements the environmental education that is going on in the classroom with experiential education or real world experiences for the, usually, urban high school students,” said TNC Eastern Sierra Nevada program project director Duane Petite. “It’s designed to increase their awareness of environmental and conservation issues, but it’s also to increase their awareness of higher education opportunities and careers in related fields.”

The interns first completed a specialized wilderness first aid certification course. After that they began improvements on a schoolyard habitat at Gardnerville Elementary School that acts as an outdoor classroom. Then they rerouted a hiking trail to reduce soil erosion near Evans Pass in Noble Canyon. They also work in the Carson Valley and Markleeville assessing the conditions of meadows and help to determine the population of young Lahontan Cutthroat Trout at Independence Lake.

The interns also visit area colleges that have environmental and natural resource management programs. About 40 percent of LEAF alumni have applied to at least one of the colleges they visited during the program. Petite said they learn other real world skills, like budgeting, during this program.

“Not only is this conservation oriented, obviously, but they’re also learning some real life skills because they have to use a budget to plan their to learm more about meals and shop for their food,” Petite said. “They have to use that budget to the LeaF program, prioritize their off-duty, off-work recreation activities.” visit www.nature.org/ Intern John Paul De La O has done the program two summers in a row about-us/careers/ and said he enjoys experiencing nature outside of the “concrete jungle” of leaf/index.htm.

Petite said the reason TNC does this is to try to prevent younger generations from not caring about the environment and world around them as the world becomes increasingly urban and digital.

“What we’re trying to do is find ways to connect people with nature,” Petite said. “Many young people seem like they’re growing up without a meaningful, personal connection with nature, and the more disconnected they are from natural landscapes, probably the less likely they’re going to be to care about them later in life. And certainly the Nature Conservancy believes that trend poses a serious threat to the future health of our world.” Ω OPINION

Remember that strip of pictures and letters that wound around the top of the chalkboard in first grade? It had a picture of an apple for an Aa and a Dd for da-dog and a goose for Th—“The goose says, ‘Tttthhhh,’’ which was pretty much the end of school enjoyment for those of us children who were missing our front teeth. “No, honey, not ‘Ssssssss,’ let’s work on it during recess.” (OK, maybe you had a mother for “Th.” Will the humiliation never end?)

Obviously, school left some of us deeply scarred, so we thought we’d try to come up with a better alphabet to help parents and students better prepare their minds for heading back to school in a matter of days. We’re sorry, it’s just something we do every year. You’ll be all right. It gets better.

These are the targets at which students will aim, or be aimed at by their parents, from nursery school to 12th grade.

As the students become aware of the importance of these be-all and end-all objectives, they will learn other important things about the world—that one size fits all, and assembly lines are the way the world works. And when the tests are behind them, they will be introduced to that empty feeling that will keep coming back when things of importance don’t live up to their billings.

B ook S . While textbooks seem to be a fading

medium for the dissemination of knowledge, we know students will still be carrying backpacks around that weigh up to 30, 40, 50 pounds. Still, the move to e-textbooks is far from a perfect transition, as those of us who prefer e-books can attest. While e-books can broaden and deepen discussions with outside links to databases or websites, sometimes charts and graphs don’t render correctly, the internet is not yet ubiquitous, and its spottiness may in fact help to reinforce the cycle of poverty. And nobody ever forgets to charge their textbook.

C l A S S . Go to class. That’s pretty easy

to do when you’re in elementary school and your mom drops you off in front of school or the bus pulls up right in front of your house, and you can’t really think of anywhere else you could be, but it’s tougher to remember to go to class when you’re older and you have friends with cars and drugs. But go to class.

You can fake your way through a lot of stuff at school, but you can’t convince anybody you’ve been doing the schoolwork when the teacher doesn’t know what you look like.

d ropou T S . This is a deadly term, one

with such formidable negative power that some students stay in school just to avoid it. So, naturally, the powers-that-be stopped using it, opting instead for at-risk. (In Tennessee, “The term ‘school leavers’ is preferred here over the more pejorative ‘school dropouts.’” Tennessee Youth Community Needs Assessment, 1994.) Just two months ago, an arm of Tufts University issued a report, Don’t Call Them Dropouts. So dropping out becomes easier when the term being faced is the less stigmatizing at-risk. As it happens, though, as time goes on, education folks are now also trying to redefine at-risk.

National At-Risk Education Network: “There is some serious debate over exactly what the term ’at-risk’ means.” It’s hard to keep up.

E duCAT ion . Let’s be honest. Kindergarten through 12th grade is

filled with hours of unadulterated boredom, better things to think about, and nuggets of things worth knowing. Now, let us put one notion to rest: You will use algebra after high school. You will use it in college, and if you can neither do algebra nor get accepted into college, you can expect to earn around $20,000 a year less than someone who got a bachelor’s. Do you know how many fewer dollar meals that is a year? Well, first, you’d have to figure out what amount 12 | RN&R |

of tax at 7.725 percent plus what number of dollar meals is equal to $20,000. That’s why we all have liberal arts educations.

It doesn’t matter if you’re kicking your first little darling off into the me at-grinder th at’s kindergarten or shooing your angsty 17-ye ar-old into her last ye ar of high school; you’re going to h ave questions.

Fa i lu r e . Most teachers, even the

bitterest, cruelest, most child-despising ones, don’t like to fail students, if for no other reason, than that it makes the teachers look bad, too. The point is not to despair. Even if you’re really struggling with the material or personal problems, the teacher still wants you to succeed. Even the shitty teachers want you to learn. (And there are shitty teachers out there. You’ll have to suffer through some no matter what. If it’s possible to be great at something, it’s also possible to be terrible at it.) Generally, as long as you show up to class, complete every assignment, and at least attempt to learn the material, you’ll be able to at least grab that D-.

of education to categorize and label every student is at play here. This would be the opposite number of special education students.

Unfortunately the labels usually come before consideration of the impact of labels. “Family therapists, school counselors and school psychologists should anticipate immediate difficulties for siblings, and to some extent parents, when a youngster is identified as gifted.” (“Labeling Gifted Youngsters: Long-term Impact On Families” by Nicholas Colangelo and Penny Brower, 1987). Be careful what you wish for.

H om ewor k . There are so many

better things to do once a person gets home than to crack those books and make home life as soul-suckingly dull as the time spent in those hallowed halls. We’re not advising draconian methods for motivating students to shut down the cell phones, social media and gaming, we’d just like to point out that the difference between an ‘A’ and a ‘C’ for a child who doesn’t have other social or emotional issues almost always boils down to completing homework and handing it in on time. We know it can be burdensome, but it’s got to be done.

Gnor a nce On the one hand, ignorant is what you’ll be if you don’t get a good education. But on the other hand, it’s somewhat amazing how much ignorance you encounter while obtaining an education. Some of it comes from know-it-all students who just need to sit down, shut up, and quit spouting their ignorant ass opinions. But grown-ups can be just as ignorant, and many of them have surprising gaps in their education, like a PE teacher who can’t name a Shakespeare play or find Gaza on a map. The greatest ignorance, though, comes from the proto-fascist hall monitor types, the school police and vice principals of discipline and the like, who often seem to think that power is knowledge, rather than the other way around.

Sixty years later, Robert Mitchell Elementary School in Sparks has mobile homes in the playground as supplementary classrooms. Nor has much changed as technology became as important as buildings. “Thirty minutes a week in a lab with old computers to practice math facts is not going to cut it,” a Washoe teacher said this month.

Sometimes, summer is an opportunity for kids who prefer their own company to chill without any social pressure. Mark Twain once said, “I never let my schooling interfere with my education.” It’s really easy to think of yourself as a prisoner at school, as an inmate being directed and told where to go, when to go there, and what to do once you get there. And that’s even how a lot of the teachers and administrators might see you: as a subject in their educational kingdom.

But that’s not how it is, really. Those people actually work for you. They’re there to serve you. It’s your education. They’re just there to facilitate it. Figure out what actually interests you and make sure that’s what you learn, whether it’s organic chemistry, operational support systems or origami.

It had to be organized. Now many schools and school districts have mentoring programs. That’s how mentor turned into a verb, which added a side lesson to the process for students—that it’s OK to convert nouns into verbs, the language be damned.

This was, of course, a delightful interlude in the lives of students, a new and inexperienced teacher, and the bravado of students was always on full display: “We’ve got a new teacher, and we’re driving her to tears every day.” The truth was more practical. Students don’t realize it at the time, but these are often some of the best weeks of a class. They see the course work through a new set of eyes, always knowing that the regular teacher—who may be sitting through some of the student teacher’s sessions in the back of the room—will be back. Even some of those regular teachers say they get a lot out of the process.

We’re talking about the meaningless stuff that has come to define the education circus in the United States: sports, cheerleading, cliques, basketball shoes, cell phone quality, proms and senior pictures. And it’s a mistake to spend your high school years fixated on some dreamy university, as though your teens years were some mortal coil on which to toil in order to reach some divine collegiate afterlife. There are unique things about elementary school and high school that are to be cherished. And some people even have a good experience in middle school—or so we’ve heard. But all that said, here’s something to keep in mind: college is much, much better than high school.

Sometimes, at school, it might feel like you’re some kind of weirdo, some kind of mutant who doesn’t fit in with the rest of the students.

It might seem like you’re about to start shooting lasers out of your eyes or something.

Well, there are more options than ever as far as private schools, charter schools, vocational academies and other alternatives to traditional public schools. Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, also sometimes known as the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, depending on the continuity we’re talking about, is a fictional school for young people born with extraordinary abilities like telepathy, superhuman strength, or blue fur covering their body, and helps them hone and develop their skills so that the students can join the school’s resident crime-fighting team, the X-Men. The point is sometimes the right school can be all the difference between feeling like a freak and feeling like a superhero.

education that acts like a Rorschach test.

Some people disdain it, others see marvelous things in it, some people go all through school barely aware of it. In real life, except for poor teachers, there is virtually nothing about it that doesn’t contribute to a good education. Students who are really into a life of the mind but find themselves in woodshop can suddenly discover skills they never dreamed they had. Students who feel oppressed by academic subjects nevertheless know they are competent because of what they learn in more practical classes. Don’t dismiss shop.

children into adulthood used to be the norm.

But the Reagan and Clinton years put the burden for increased productivity in the world marketplace on the school system, and thus on students. “Let’s be like Japan” was the fad under Reagan, and Clinton claimed the nation had to be “like a big corporation competing in the global marketplace.” Billionaires like Bill Gates and Eli Broad started steering education toward treating school systems like businesses, getting quantifiable results to meet business needs. The legacy of all that pressure on students has long since been documented, but hasn’t resulted in reforms because the money that the Broads and Gates hand out comes with strings. So the education systems serve business instead of students through techniques like year-round schools.

oology Sure, if your child ends up in one of those high end, Bill Gatesfunded, Ivy League prep schools, maybe he or she will get to study some zoology. We’re talking more prosaically than that. How about that moose who’s going to tell him how to dress? Or that snake who’s going to hiss its gossip about her out of jealousy? Maybe you or your child will get a chance to study that ass who disrupts the class for everyone. One of the greatest things about K-12 is it really teaches you about life—both the parent who is trying to help the child negotiate those dear old golden rule days and the child who can only hope it’s over soon. Ω

Hopefuls show up to audition for the blockbuster TV singing competition

O

ne of the highest rated shows in the history of television, American Idol’s audition tour bus drew local artists to Reno’s downtown City Plaza on Saturday, July 12, alongside perpetual tryout hopefuls who

rabidly pursue the mobile audition behemoth in their quest for stardom.

The RN&R found an eclectic group of competitors who ranged from serious musicians and colorful entertainers to random tourists wandering by. The show, now headed into its 14th season, set up tents with the “American Idol Audition Bus” as a colossal backdrop for the producers, who relentlessly endured eight hours of lyrical assault by participants crusading to be the next American Idol phenomenon.

A first-time audition city for the pop culture mega-machine, Reno served up blistering triple degree temperatures along with a few hopeful contenders for the iconic entertainment apparatus, which has struggled in the last few years to maintain its ratings and early prestige as a megastar-producing entity. Some contenders waited in line for up to eight hours while others arrived the night before to ensure they had a spot in line to present their skills to the judges, even though the show openly states under the audition section of their official website that, “there is no guarantee that we will have space or time to accommodate every person.”

Hannah Sloan, 17, was one of the many local high school kids who showed up to try their luck. The Damonte High School student said she wanted to audition to “prove to herself” that she could accept the challenge of competing against so many people.

First in line and also the first contestant to make it past the judges’ table, 26-year-old Jordan Rasmussen drove 10 hours and arrived at the tryouts at 3:30 a.m. in order to secure her spot. She was one of many non-Nevada residents who tried out on the Reno stop.

Part time burlesque dancer and full-time Lake Tahoe resident Ashley Kepler was able to sing her way into the next round at age 26. She failed to make it through the first time she auditioned when she was 18, but got lucky in Reno eight years later.

24-year-old Renoite Destiny Jo Pike attempted her chance at fame for a second time. The local hairstylist braved extreme temperatures and long lines for her chance to show her skills to the judges. Unfortunately, after seven hours in line, the crooner was disappointed and rejected by the judges.

Destiny will continue her pursuits though, traveling to San Francisco next for another attempt at idolation.

Local street musician Wyatt Smith stayed positive after his rejection. “It was a lot of fun, and I am not upset because there are so many talented singers out here today. Although, it was nerve-wracking!” The 18-year-old singer-guitarist felt the main reason he did not advance was because he “sang a little flat.”

Even though the Reno native had made it past the first round for the show X Factor, and has been attempting to impress the Idol judges since she was a student at Hug High, she has been stopped in the first round almost every year since 2006. The judges suggested vocal lessons in her quest to become America’s next idol.

McNamara uses beer packages, often covered in unnatural silvery foil, and recasts them in collage format to evoke natural environments and landscapes.

McNamara and Yuroff have been partners in life and art since 1978, although they rarely, if ever, collaborate directly. They’re both well respected, even beloved, local artists who have exhibited work extensively throughout the valley and the region for the last five or six decades. McNamara was the curator of the University of Nevada, Reno’s Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery from 1964 to 1992. The couple didn’t necessarily conceive of these works with the intention of integrating them, but they agree that the works hang together with unusual harmony.

“This work is more interrelated than what we’ve done in the past just because of the materials and using found objects,” said Yuroff.

“For years and years I’ve been collecting collage materials, and I had collected a lot of earlier beer materials,” McNamara said. “Cartons used to be—back a few

years, 15, 20 years ago—they were much richer. I think they were obviously spending more money making them.”

His collages are laid out in a grid pattern, and the titles and some of the imagery also relate to drinking beer. In “Keep it Cool in the Pool,” for example, images of golden beer, flowing like a river, are intercut with images of swimming pools.

“Rockey Mt. High at the Lake” depicts a landscape with a silver and red sky made from old Coors packaging. In one corner is the top of an unidentifiable person’s head, what McNamara calls an “anonymous forehead,” a way to include a human element without representing a specific individual.

Yuroff focuses on another material a less attentive eye might dismiss: dead wood.

“I’ve noticed that old, dried sage wood often has the same texture and movement as water or clouds,” she said. “Our show is called Out of Context. By taking these things out of their environment and putting them into the context of a painting, your imagination works in the context of what you see, and it’s transformed.”

Her piece “Big Fish” includes a magnified depiction of the Devils Hole pupfish, sometimes called the world’s rarest fish, which is only found in one tiny geothermal pool in Nevada just east of Death Valley.

The attached pieces of sage wood seem to drift across the fish like waves.

For McNamara, there’s an added attraction to exhibiting work at McKinley, a place he was familiar with in its previous incarnation.

“I actually went to school here,” he said.

“This is the second time I’ve shown here and when we were asked to do a show, it was just kind of automatic, because it was a very pleasant school.” Ω

Don’t mess with Texas Brothers Barbecue 463 Roberts St., 384-3547 Barbecue. The primal nature of barbecued meat sparks something deep inside, perhaps a genetic memory of by Todd South prehistoric grill masters who discovered that “low and slow” roasting combined with wood smoke is pure, delectable wizardry. A vegetarian friend once said the only thing she missed about eating meat was her dad’s 12-hour, hickory-smoked baby back ribs. It was as if confessing a mortal sin, the desire to fall off the wagon and dig into some pig. I felt a brief twinge of omnivorous guilt, but a stop for smoked brisket on my way home cleared that right up.

isn’t fancy, just basic tables and chairs with paper towel dispensers in easy reach, and plenty of down-home Texas kitsch for decoration. The service is friendly and efficient, and they’ve got both Lone Star and (my favorite) Shiner Bock in the cooler.

Sandwiches and mixed bowls are available, but my wife and I went with a couple of plate meals ($7-$13, including two sides and a roll), as well as a couple of orders of “barbecue by the pound” ($5-$24) to sample and take home. The barbecue pit beans were simple, savory, and the mustard-based potato salad was fair enough. The “kicked-up slaw” had a slightly spicy, seasoned dressing I really liked, even though I’m not a huge fan of coleslaw (usually too sweet). The “traditional slaw” was something of a puzzle in that it appeared to be chopped cabbage and little else. Not a lot of flavor, but it worked OK as a garnish for the brisket. Speaking of which, Brothers’ beef brisket is among the best I’ve had from a Reno smokehouse. Chopped and moist, with just enough bark to add flavored texture, and plenty of smoke.

The pulled pork was less dramatic, with little bark and less smoke, yet perfectly pulled, moist, and with plenty of porky goodness. The St. Louis-cut pork ribs were just plain perfect, at least in my book. Great dry-rub bark, and though totally tender had just enough hang-on-the-bone to provide nice “bite and pull” action.

Some folks think ribs should slide off the bone, but I think they’re best when they have just a bit of fight left in them. All three of the meats we sampled were perfectly delicious as-is, but the two house-made finishing sauces sent them over the top.

The milder sauce was tangy without being too sweet, full of flavor, yet the habanero sauce was something special. I’ve been told my homemade barbecue sauce is pretty good, but Brothers’ spicy sauce is damned near perfect. Hot, but not too hot. Complex flavors that match just right with the dry spice rub cooked into the meat. If Brothers’ bottles and sells that sauce retail, I may quit making my own. Ω

There are literally hundreds—if not thousands—of barbecue styles and methods in practice around the globe, and just within the U.S., there are dozens of regional varieties. Brothers Barbecue claims to be serving “Texas style,” and I’d say it’s akin to that of Central Texas: dry-rub spice blends (with finishing sauce on the side), plenty of hardwood smoke, chopped rather than sliced meats, and simple, minimal side dishes. I’m a big fan of Deep South sides—collard greens, fried okra, hush puppies, oh my!—but Central Texas is all about the meat.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Brothers Barbecue is a family affair, drawing on two generations of grilling and smoking expertise.

Having operated a catering and food truck business for several years, the family recently decided to take the plunge and open a sit-down smoke shack. Taking over a converted house previously home to a couple less-thanamazing barbecue operations, they’ve completely remodeled the joint and it’s never looked better. The ambiance

Gun show The Purge: Anarchy

Last year’s The Purge was a good premise backed up by a boring slog of a movie. The Purge: Anarchy, a sequel delivered just a year later, is a better movie.

I’m not saying it’s a good movie, for it is not. It’s a better movie with a lot of problems.

The film starts mere hours before the annual Purge, a one-day holiday where citizens by of the United States are allowed to put their Bob Grimm cherished arsenals to use. Yes, murder is legal for a day in this universe, although certain b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m types of explosives are strictly prohibited.

This is sort of the Magnolia or Crash of Purge movies in that we see a lot of story lines involving multiple characters eventually converging. While the first Purge gave us Ethan Hawke and his family moping around inside their house as the annual blood fest took place outside their doors, this one takes the action outside and into the streets. Admittedly, this is a better move.

In one plot thread we get the mysterious Sergeant (Frank Grillo) gathering up some heavy artillery and taking to the streets on Purge night, looking for some revenge on a dude who did him and his family wrong. In another, we get a mother and daughter, Eva and Cali (Carmen Ejogo and Zoe Soul), who must leave their apartment after they are attacked. They get close to death via big machine gun when Sergeant, passing by, chooses to interrupt his vengeful mission and lend the ladies a hand.

Another scampering couple (Kiele Sanchez and Zach Gilford) joins the fray, and the band of strangers join together to face off against gangs of masked marauders and, eventually, agents of the very strange government.

The government here is depicted as the New Founding Fathers, a clear jab at the current Tea Party by writer director James DeMonaco. The New Founding Fathers have concocted the Purge as a means to get rid of the poor and elevate the rich. Only the rich can afford the heavy artillery, giving them the upper hand on Purge night by virtue of their wallets.

While the first Purge had far too little going on, this one suffers a bit from overkill.

Some of the characters and their boring problems get a little too much screen time.

Additionally, everything that happens in this movie feels glaringly obvious. It offers little in the ways of genuine surprises or scares.

The set pieces, which often consist of dark city streets, have the look of art design done on a miniscule budget. Granted, action on a larger scale is welcomed in this franchise, but there’s something very flat about the look of this movie.

When the band of survivors eventually finds themselves being hunted for the amusement of an elite dinner party, the attempts at dark humor fall flat.

It’s an interesting idea to have a sequence like this, reminiscent of The Most Dangerous Game, but it comes late in the film and feels like it is an element being shoehorned into the movie.

Grillo (so good in The Grey with Liam Neeson) is the strongest link in the movie, although he overacts a bit in his attempts to elevate the script he’s been given. I also liked Michael K. Williams as Carmelo, leader of an underground force standing up to the New Founding Fathers.

The whole affair feels like a bit of a John Carpenter rip-off, and not the good John Carpenter, but the fair-to-middling John Carpenter. Now, that’s better than watching Ethan Hawke mope around his house and having tense conversations through his front door for an entire film, but it still doesn’t feel fresh.

No doubt, there are more Purge movies on the way. If The Purge: Anarchy is indicative of the franchise improving gradually from movie to movie, then perhaps we will finally get a good Purge somewhere around 2017. Ω

22 Jump Street

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, an unlikely duo if there ever was one, basically repeat the same steps of their very funny 21 Jump Street, and they do it in a way that keeps things fresh while knowingly recycling the same plot.

This film acknowledges what it is, a run-of-themill sequel, for its entire running time. It’s a selfmocking technique that works well thanks to its stars and the deft comic direction of returning directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are on a roll, having also directed this year’s The Lego Movie. This one picks up where the first film left off, with Captain Dickson (Ice Cube in serious comic overdrive) assigning Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) to college. In college, they will do exactly what they did undercover in the first movie: Infiltrate the dealers, find the supplier.

They get the laughs the same way, through Hill’s self-deprecating, rat-a-tat delivery, and Tatum’s dumb lug shtick. It worked well the first time, and it works well again.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

The motion-capture apes take another step toward world domination in a sequel just as good as its predecessor, and certainly a step forward when it comes to pure, unadulterated ass-kicking ape action. The movie picks up 10 years after a well-meaning doctor played by James Franco first shot an experimental drug into a chimp and unintentionally initiated the end of the human race. Caesar (Andy Serkis doing his motion-capture best) is leading a group of genetically modified apes in the redwoods near the Golden Gate Bridge. Life is good, and the humans have seemingly disappeared thanks to the Simian Flu brought on by the Franco character’s experiments. As it turns out, some humans have survived, led by Gary Oldman’s frustrated Dreyfus, who fears the humans will soon run out of fuel for their generators. There’s a chance for some hydraulic power via a dam in the woods, a dam that just happens to be near the apes compound. A band of humans led by Malcolm (Jason Clarke) sets out to repair the dam, stumbles upon the apes, and those apes aren’t happy to see them. Koba, an ape who figured prominently in the first film, returns, and he has no interest in a peaceful existence with humans. So, they fight, and they fight in glorious and exciting fashion. Matt Reeves, who directed Cloverfield, Let Me In and the vastly underrated The Pallbearer, proves a more than ample choice for this movie.

He’s already been announced for the sequel, due two years from now.

Life Itself

Roger Ebert saw a lot of documentaries during his reign as the world’s most renowned movie critic. It’s only fitting that one of the last things he did in his life was take part in a documentary that will certainly stand as one of 2014’s best. This gives us the full story on Ebert, retelling the days before he started writing about movies for a living, his Pulitzer Prize-winning career as a critic, and his painful, yet amazingly graceful, last days. Director Steve James had permission to film Ebert in his hospital rooms as he battled cancer. It’s hard to watch what he’s going through, but it’s inspiring to see how Ebert handled his obstacles.

Oh sure, James probably shows us some of the more pleasant, upbeat footage, but Ebert’s passion for life was a most genuine one, and no trick editing is required to show us that. The film touches upon two very important partnerships in Ebert’s life: his marriage to Chaz Ebert—who appears often in the film—and his work with the late Gene Siskel. While watching the movie, it seems as if Roger Ebert is narrating, but the voice is that of an impressionist named Stephen Stanton. The resemblance is incredible, as if Roger somehow found his voice again in time to tell us his story. This is sweet, scary, funny, sad and surprisingly entertaining and uplifting. It’s also revealing (I didn’t know he was an alcoholic), uncompromising (some of the medical moments are very hard to watch), and brutally honest.

While I give it my highest endorsement, I think Ebert would’ve given it 3 and a half stars out of 4. Hey—he was a tough critic. (Available on VOD, Amazon.com and iTunes during limited theatrical release.)

Maleficent

Angelina Jolie plays the title character, the infamous horned villain from Sleeping Beauty. There’s a little bit of revisionist history here, with Maleficent portrayed as more of a fallen angel rather than a straight up baddie.

The whole thing almost works because Jolie is

damned good in this film, especially when the script allows for her to bellow curses and just act devilish. It gets a little sleepy at times when it deals with, well, Sleeping Beauty (Elle Fanning), the young woman who stands to have a very bad 16th birthday thanks to a Maleficent curse. Jolie has a creepy getup that I thought would bother me, but I kind of liked looking at it after a while.

It’s the world surrounding her that I found a bit pedestrian. Director Robert Stromberg worked as a production designer on films like Alice in Wonderland, Avatar and Oz the Great and Powerful. I didn’t like any of those movies and, in the end, I don’t really like this one. At this point in watching Stromberg’s work, I’m just not taken by his weird visual worlds. They put me off for some reason, and have a choppy pop-up book feel to them. On the plus side, it is better than Alice and Oz, and perhaps even Avatar. On the negative side, it’s still not all that good.

Sex Tape

Once upon a time, there was a director with a very promising career. In 1998, Jake Kasdan made his directorial debut with the excellent Zero Effect, one of that year’s best movies. It still stands as one of Ben Stiller’s best efforts, and Kasdan even wrote the thing. Since then, I’ve been following all of his releases and they have gotten progressively worse (Orange County, Walk Hard, Bad Teacher). Now comes this mess starring Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz, an ugly comedy that tries to get laughs out of people being very, very uncomfortable. The two play a husband and wife who don’t know how to have sex with each other anymore, so they make a video using an iPad. Then, that video syncs up with a bunch of other iPads that they gave away as gifts, so a bunch of friends and family are at risk of seeing them naked and sweaty. Somehow, Kasdan manages to work in an overlong bit of Segel getting attacked by a dog, while supporting stars like Rob Corddry and Rob Lowe labor for laughs. The film feels like a flat, dated and shameless piece of advertising for Apple—who must be seriously regretting the decision to allow their product placement in this movie—and internet porn. Let it be known that Diaz and Segel look and sound absolutely disgusting when they are making out.

Tammy

Having co-written this movie, Melissa McCarthy can take a lot of the blame for yet another bad comedy featuring her playing an uninteresting mess of a human being. She stars as the title character, a fast food worker who wrecks her car, gets fired and finds out her husband (Nat Faxon) is having an affair in the same day. She winds up hitting the road with her alcohol-swilling, diabetic grandma (Susan Sarandon), and virtually nothing works as far as laughs are concerned. McCarthy and Ben Falcone’s script (Falcone also directs) tries to mine laughs out of grandma being a trashy party girl and Tammy eating too much pie. It wastes the talents of everybody involved, including Gary Cole as a philandering barfly and Mark Duplass as Tammy’s love interest. When Tammy holds up her former burger joint employer, it’s almost funny, but most of that scene was covered in the preview trailer. McCarthy can be hilarious—her best film moment may always be the outtake during the This is 40 credits—but she can also be tedious as she is in this and last year’s Identity Thief. Her next film is St. Vincent co-starring Bill Murray, a film that will hopefully erase this one from our memories.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Director Michael Bay seems to be taunting his haters at this point, employing all of those things that sicken his detractors, and cranking everything up to disgusting levels.

Replacing Shia LaBeouf is Mark Wahlberg. He plays Cade Yeager, a crazy robot inventor living on a farm with his smoking hot daughter, Tessa (Nicola Peltz). After inadvertently buying Optimus Prime from an old guy at an abandoned movie theater (yep!), Yeager and his daughter wind up fighting alongside the Autobots as they battle an evil race of American-made Autobot clones courtesy of a Steve Jobs-like mogul (Stanley Tucci). The movie is a billion hours long, and none of those hours are ever any good.

Some of the visuals pop, but you won’t care because you will be glazed over by the time most of the big action kicks up. If you should choose to see this one, make sure all of your bills are paid, and you’ve winter-proofed your house before you sit down, because you aren’t getting out of that theater for a very long time.

Punk rock bible Donkey Jaw If you take away the anti-establishment, politically-driven messages in some punk rock music, what are you by Anna Hart left with? Songs about life that are stripped-down in instrumentation, but continue to bring the relentless, unadorned, pulsing edge that defines the genre’s sound. This is the area where Donkey Jaw works.

Formed in 2013, Donkey Jaw draws its main influences from bands inextricably linked with the punk rock of the late 1980s to mid-1990s, like Operation Ivy, Rancid and Alkaline Trio.

“Friends, family, life, love,” says Ryan. “Reno is so clouded with politics. We needed something that wasn’t ... political. Our music is something you don’t have to think too much about. You just feel it.”

Outside of making music, all four men are good friends, bonding over Pokémon, video games and a love of fried chicken. But it was punk rock music that started their friendships.

In regard to meeting McKinley, Ryan says, “When you see someone wearing a [Rancid] shirt, you make a beeline.”

With Lund, however, meeting him was a different story.

“They met me on Craigslist and thought I was a murderer,” laughs Lund. “So they strategically hid clubs and weapons all around the room.

But we played 'My War'

by Black Flag, and then I knew it was OK.” While Donkey Jaw is made of relatively young musicians, all either 20 or 21, they represent a small demographic of the Reno punk rock scene. While the community of bands and fans have been welcoming, the members sometimes find it difficult to connect to older punk rockers.

“Sometimes it’s hard to relate,” Ryan jokes. “We’re not feeding our kids or paying our mortgages.”

But the group hopes the age disparity changes. Marche says, “I wish we could just convert people.”

“Can we tell you about our lord and savior, Sid Vicious?” laughs Timmy Lund.

While punk rock music doesn’t enjoy the same popularity as its start in the 1970s or its revival in the 1990s, Donkey Jaw thinks it will continue to endure.

“There are certain kinds of people that punk rock resonates with,” says Ryan. “That will always happen, because there is nothing else like it.”

Currently, Donkey Jaw has been playing shows in Reno. They hope to set up concerts outside of Reno and would like to plan a tour in the future.

They are also in the midst of making their first album, Donkey Jaw Lives, which is being recorded by Lund. It will feature 12 original songs, with the release date not yet set. Ω

The official band consists of Zack Ryan on guitar and vocals, Josh Marche on bass, and Kodeus McKinley on drums, with close friend Timmy Lund often rehearsing with them on guitar. While the band does collaborate creatively on fleshing out their music, Ryan is the principal songwriter.

But the name came from McKinley.

A few years after “Donkey Jaw” was rejected as a name for McKinley’s previous band, it finally found its place.

“It’s actually biblical,” says McKinley. “There’s a story about [Samson] in the Bible. He kills a thousand dudes with a donkey’s jaw. I thought that was sick.”

Donkey Jaw’s sound encompasses the driving beat, the tastefully simplistic chord progressions, and the aggressive vocals that are characteristic of punk. But unlike a lot of punk rock, the songs are basically all sans political underpinnings.

The content of the songs instead focus on topics you’d find in everyday life, through the eyes of a 20-year-old in Reno.

Kodeus McKinley, Josh Marche, Zack Ryan and Timmy Lund aim to convert people to punk rock.

Highlights include the Drag Olympics at Harrah’s Reno, 219 N. Center St., and the Official Pride Kick-Off Party at Tronix Nightclub, 303 Kietzke Lane, on Friday, July 25, followed by the CommUNITY Pride Parade on Saturday, July 26. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Lunsford Park, along Riverside Drive and First Street, and heads for Wingfield Park, 300 W. First St., for the Pride Festival. The festival begins at 11 a.m. and features a day of music, arts, entertainment, games, food and vendor booths.

Hot August NigHts Arguably the region’s biggest special event of the year, Reno, Sparks and neighboring cities take a nostalgia trip to the 1950s and 1960s during this celebration of classic cars, rock 'n’ roll and Americana.

The festival features more than 5,000 classic vehicles, show ’n’ shines, drag races, controlled cruises, concerts, a swap meet, sock hop, prom and classic car auction. Hot August Nights events take place across the metro area with most public events centered

Tales from the cryptic My boyfriend of two years got an early birthday present from his sister and her husband: a really expensive, second-row ticket for a major sporting event next year.

The trouble is, it falls on my 30th birthday. He knows I usually don’t care about my birthday, and I confess that I also judge people who care about theirs. Still, I can’t help but feel that my 30th is a bit of a milestone, and I wanted to spend my birthday weekend together somewhere with my boyfriend. I understand that he doesn’t want to seem ungrateful for his sister’s gift, and he’s courteously told me about this conflict well in advance.

Do I need to just get over myself? Or should I raise my concerns?

As a child, I was not one to turn down birthday loot, but around age 8, I developed a sort of jadedness about birthdays that continues to this day. The way I see it, if you are over 12 and not a cancer patient, do we really need to throw you a party and give you prizes for surviving another year?

It seems you communicated some similar thinking to your boyfriend. Bizarrely, he believed you. Yet, apparently out of love and consideration—and perhaps the suspicion men have that all women are at least a little nuts—he let you know a year in advance that hockey or auto racing or whatever’s special day coincides with your usually-not-so-special day. What more was he supposed to do—well, other than travel back in time and ask your mom, “Hey, can you hold the baby in one more week? There’ll be a scheduling conflict in 30 years.”

Wait—were you expecting him to turn down the ticket? If so, what’s that really about? Maybe a recent public service announcement from your ovaries? “Hi, we’re also turning 30, as in, it won’t be long before we retire, move to the countryside, and take up scrapbooking.” You may also be looking for what evolutionary psychologists call a “costly signal”—some show of commitment requiring such a big outlay of money, effort, or forgone opportunity that it’s likely to be sincere. (In the absence of a proposal and a diamond, maybe it seems the least he could do is light that ticket on fire.)

If you do want more from the relationship, you may be able to get it, but expecting a man to read your thoughts is like expecting your dog to understand algebra. Tell your boyfriend you’re feeling sensitive about your birthday, your future, or whatever else, and you’ll at least find out where you stand. Assuming you get the reassurance you need, maybe you can do the loving thing and put your partner’s interests up there in importance with your own, perhaps by celebrating your birthday the weekend before the actual day. Ω

ARIES (March 21-April 19): A report in the

prestigious British medical journal BMJ says that less than 1 percent of young pregnant women in the United States claim to be virgins. They testify that they have conceived a fetus without the benefit of sex. That’s impossible, right? Technically, yes. But if there could ever be a loophole in natural law, it would happen for you, Aries, sometime in the coming weeks. You will be so exceptionally fertile, so prone to hatching new life, that almost anything could incite germination. A vivid dream or captivating idea or thrilling adventure or exotic encounter might be enough to do the trick.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): As you

weave your way through the next chapter of your story, I suggest you take inspiration from the turtle. You may even want to imagine that the turtle is your animal ally, a guide that helps you access the gradual and deliberate kind of intelligence you will need.

Moving quickly will not be appropriate for the leisurely lessons that are coming your way. The point is to be deep and thorough about a few things rather than halfknowledgeable about a lot of things. There’s one other turtlelike quality I hope you will cultivate, too: the ability to feel at home wherever you are.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): America’s

biggest winery is E.&J. Gallo Winery. It sells more wine than any other company, and has been named the planet’s “Most Powerful Wine Brand” four different years. Ernest and Julio Gallo launched the enterprise in 1933 after studying the art of winemaking in pamphlets they found in the basement of a public library in Modesto, Calif. I foresee a less spectacular but metaphorically similar arc for you, Gemini. Sometime soon—maybe it has already happened—information or inspiration you come across in a modest setting will launch you on the path to future success. There is one caveat: You must take seriously the spark you encounter and not underestimate it because it appears in humble circumstances.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): In the latter

part of the 18th century, American rebels and rabble-rousers used to gather regularly in the basement of the Green Dragon Tavern in Boston. There they plotted the Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere’s ride and other dissident adventures that opposed British rule. That’s why the Green Dragon became known as the “Headquarters of the Revolution.” I think you and your cohorts need a place like that, Libra. It’s high time for you to scheme and dream about taking coordinated actions that will spur teamwork and foster liberation.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “When one

has not had a good father, one must create one,” said philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.

What does that mean? How might you go about “creating” a good father? Well, you could develop a relationship with an admirable older man who is an inspiring role model. You could read books by men whose work stirs you to actualize your own potentials. If you have a vigorous inner life, you could build a fantasy dad in your imagination. Here’s another possibility: Cultivate in yourself the qualities you think a good father should have. And even if you actually had a pretty decent father, Scorpio, I’m sure he wasn’t perfect. So it still might be interesting to try out some of these ideas.

The coming weeks will be an excellent time to get more of the fathering energy you would thrive on.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “If I

seem free, it’s because I’m always running.”

So said Sagittarian musician Jimi Hendrix, widely regarded as one of the most inventive and electrifying guitarists who ever lived.

Does that prospect have any appeal to you, Sagittarius? I don’t, of course, recommend that you keep running for the rest of your long life. After a while, it will be wise to rest and ruminate. But I do think it might be illuminating to try this brazen approach for a week or two. If it feels right, you might also want to mix in some dancing and skipping and leaping with your running.

dile slams its jaws shut, the energy it summons is powerful. But when the beast opens its jaws, the force it exerts is weak. That’s because the muscles used to close are much more robust than the muscles used to open.

I’m wondering if an analogous story might be told about you these days, Virgo. Are you more prone to close down than to open up? Is it easier for you to resist, avoid and say no than it is to be receptive, extend a welcome and say yes? If so, please consider cultivating a better balance. You need both capacities running at full strength in the coming days.

Cezanne’s painting “The Artist’s Sister” was on display at a museum in Aix-en-Provence, France. Then, a lucky event occurred: It was stolen. When it was finally recovered months later, it had been ripped out of its frame.

An art restorer who was commissioned to repair it discovered that there was a previously unknown Cezanne painting on the back of the canvas. As a result, the appraisal of the original piece rose $75,000. Now both sides are on view at the St. Louis City Art Museum. I foresee a comparable progression in your life, Pisces. An apparent setback will ultimately increase your value.

It’s only a paper moon The Management Jill Bryant has worked at Paper Moon for nearly three years. Recently, the store moved from a plum spot in Plumbgate Shopping Center to a new location at 1413 S. Virginia St. It’s a much larger location. The range of eclectic products hasn’t changed much. There’s just a lot more of it and more room to move around. For more information, call 827-9923.

What was the motivation to move Paper Moon from Plumbgate Shopping Center?

First and foremost was Midtown. We thought it would be a better fit for us. As much as we liked our old location—it was great for us, we liked the neighborhood—we thought Midtown was an artier place for us. We really needed to expand. We were a little “landlocked” on either side of us on that other building. We have a store that’s bigger by almost 50 percent.

Right. And it seems like you’d have more drive-by, passers-by traffic.

Yes and no. At certain times of the day.

For example, at the old location we had a Starbucks, and we had a lot of morning shoppers. Midtown is more of an afternoonevening area, so we get most of our traffic a little bit later now.

Have you changed hours? What are you doing to adjust?

We’re open a little bit later now. We used to be 9-6. We’re now open at 10 and we’re going to push it back to 7 or 8 to accommodate the later crowds. That’s not official yet.

Some of these things look more Burner-oriented.

Has the demographics kind of changed?

I’m looking at the feathered coats.

Especially the fur coats behind me?

We’re bringing that in. One of my boss’ friends, her daughter was diagnosed with stage four cancer, and she makes Burner costumes, and we’re selling them here to help her. We’re also going to be doing a fundraiser. My bosses still need to pick a day for that. My bosses are Burners.

It has. It’s definitely a younger crowd, but we still get our tried-and-true customers from our previous location in that other neighborhood, but we now get a lot of the indie kids.

I also note that you’ve changed some of the stuff that’s available in here. Is that because of the younger people?

Oh, that’s right. You used to sell the kilts.

But I was wary, for some reason, of his new book, Tibetan Peach Pie, which isn’t a novel, but a collection of memories from his long (the man is 82!) and bodaciously colorful life.

He openly declares that TPP ain’t no damned autobiography, but just him waxing on some of the episodes and circumstances that he (1) actually remembers, and (2) finds notable.

I don’t know why I was wary.

Robbins, as usual, gets warmed up, gets a groove on, and rocks it in a way that is still unique, hilarious and way, way cool. So if you’re a T.R. person, don’t worry about it. Buy it.

Download it. Dig it. His recollections of being an oddball performance artist in Seattle in ’66 are worth the price of the download alone. Ω

• Something I need to clean up is my ever-wavering position on Keystone XL. A few months ago, I declared myself to be officially on the fence of indifference about the Keystone XL Pipeline project, since the oil from Alberta tar sands is already flowing to Texas via the Keystone Pipeline. So the whole thing seemed done and moot.

Since then, I’ve acquainted myself with the position of the Sioux tribe of South Dakota, who passionately hate XL since that pipeline would be built upon their property. OK, so I’m down with the Natives, and off the fence. No to XL. All XL does is make it possible for more glop to get to Houston. But there’s already plenty of glop getting down to the Gulf. So screw it. And since the Koch Brothers will be gigantic beneficiaries of XL, well, as always, screw them, too.
