US Open Of WatercrOSS
The ninth annual event features some of the world’s best watercross riders, including those from the United States, Australia, Columbia, Kuwait and Indonesia. Competitors will vie for the title of Sparks US Open of Watercross Champion. This internationally recognized event will be one of the highest paid events in the country. Watch, play and/or take home a variety of board games at this convention dedicated to board games. Participants can try their hand at various board, card, role-playing and miniature tabletop games. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to teach games to new players. Prizes will be awarded at some of the gaming venues. Vendors include local game shops. The gathering takes place at Circus Circus, 500 N. Sierra St. Doors are open from noon to midnight on Friday, June 27, 8 a.m. to midnight on Saturday, June 28, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 29. This year’s hot rod show and celebration of rockabilly music and culture moves to John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Sparks. The event features contests, drag races, outhouse races, live music and entertainment, tattoo artists, vendors, a poker walk and the Rockabilly Beer Crawl along Victorian Avenue in downtown Sparks. Gates are open from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, June 26-27, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 29. Admission is free. The proto-punk legend visits Holland Project this weekend. With his group The Modern Lovers, Richman influenced countless punk rock and alt-punk bands on both sides of the Atlantic with songs such as “Pablo Picasso” and “Roadrunner.” The singer-songwriter will share the stage with Tommy Larkins, who appeared him as part of the musical duo/Greek chorus seen in the 1998 comedy film There’s Something about Mary. This celebration of roots music, Americana, folk art and wild horses features performances by Strange on the Range, The Refiners, The Third Wheelers, Josiah Knight, Todd South, Ten Dollar Pony, Lucas Young and the Wilderness, among others. Advocates and rescue groups for Nevada’s wild horses will be in attendance. A percentage of all profits will go towards the protection of wild horses. Tickets are $15 in advance for one day and $20 at the gate and $28 in advance for a two-day festival ticket and $40 at the gate.
