Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I hope y’all enjoy the feature story I wrote for this week’s issue. I’m pretty happy with the way it came together. But there was one small bummer. During my interview with the three Georges Pickard, they decided that the three of them—representing three generations of Reno music—needed to perform onstage somewhere together.

They approached a venue about the possibility, but that particular venue, which serves alcohol, had to turn them down, because young George isn’t yet 21.

That just pisses me off.

To be clear, I don’t blame the venue. I realize it’s a question of law. They’ll probably still be able to put something together at an all-ages venue—and situations like this are exactly why all-ages venues, like the Holland Project, are important—and that’s all fine and good, but many of us like to have a drink or two while we enjoy live music, which isn’t an option at many all-ages venues.

Personally, I feel pretty strongly that the drinking age should be lowered to 18, as it is in most civilized countries, or even all the way down to 16.

You’re a fool if you think that underage drinking never happens or is something unusual that only happens among the most troubled kids. Teenagers drink. And 20-year-old college kids certainly drink. And because of our stupid laws, they have to do it illicitly.

One great thing about drinking, in moderation at least, is that it can break down personal barriers, helping people—even family members from different generations—bond and connect.

But our drinking laws create a barrier between those over and under 21. A lowered drinking age will help young people learn healthier, safer drinking practices rather than cultivating a culture of illegality among them.

On the flip side, I think the driving age should be raised to 18 or older. In my experience, driving an automobile is far more dangerous than drinking a beer. But then again, that might be because I am, by all accounts, a terrible driver.

If all the talking heads who are advocating a return to Iraq want any credibility, they will include in their statements complete support/ advocacy for raising taxes to fund the effort, and the start of a draft to make sure that we don’t keep sending the same set of troops into harm’s way over and over and over and over again. But of course, this won’t happen because the real meat of their intent is just bad-mouthing this president and anything he does or doesn’t do.

Judge Flanagan’s order Re “A judicial outrage” (editorial, June 12): Thank you very much for this editorial. It came on the heels of Schmidt’s defeat in the primary, which I found very disheartening.

Schmidt is a candidate who would have brought the foundation of our national and state constitutions to his office, had he been elected. Why Kieckhefer prevailed so strongly, I felt was a direct reflection of the bogus decision by Flanagan that was splashed over the front pages of the area’s newspapers.

While “dirty pool,” it’s just politics as usual and to be expected.

But, this decision by Flanagan should bring into doubt his qualifications for the bench. A judge who doesn’t know the first thing about the First Amendment? Even though Kieckhefer has now dropped his lawsuit—imagine!—I hope that Schmidt prevails in his counter suit.

Cynthia Kennedy Virginia City I was pleasantly surprised to read this because everyone must be concerned about our “rights” and for some reason Judge Flanagan determined he could overstep his lawful authority and now—hopefully—could be charged in his personal capacity. This Judge should also be sanctioned.

known better but they somehow determined and were able to do this after 5 p.m. on the Friday prior to the election. Gee, wasn’t that convenient? How could any other lawyer or law firm be able to pull that off? The good ol’ boy network and Nevada politics at its best? Maybe Schmidt was right?

This decision has not only been the talk of Nevada but there have also been national stories that have great concern with violations of Case Law (the Doctrine of Prior Restraint). I guess when one unconstitutional illegal decision is made, it should be a concern of all Constitutionalists and law activists in the United States. Thank God for these watchdogs and for your spoton opinion.

As a person who finds research and facts to be helpful both when voting and when making any other major choice in life, I greatly appreciate the effort your team must have done to obtain these facts so quickly.

district reported the judge’s order on their front pages—the Reno Gazette Journal and the Nevada Appeal in Carson City put it inside, the Sparks Tribune ignored it altogether—suggests that the judge’s order was no determinant of the race. We suspect that few voters even knew of the judge’s order. But whether that is the case or not, our concern was not the candidates but the voters, and whether information about the candidates is allowed to flow to the voters without interference by government. The United States Constitution and the nation’s traditions say government has no power to prevent the expression of any candidate statement, true or false, to voters just because some official considers it unfit for the public discourse.

Re “Hot days, hotter nights” (cover story, June 12): We enjoyed your calendar for summer fun for there were lots of different ways to enjoy each day.

Thanks for the clever, out-of-the-box ideas for my family will grab one and go on some of your suggestions.

One of your ideas about visiting the porno shops in town struck a chord in our house for we are finding out that pornography isn’t a harmless, fair weather industry.

It involves women who have been exploited, abused by family, friends in their lives and then works in the sex industry because that is the only work they feel worthy of. Then a pimp will get hold of them to exploit them in human trafficking industry.

Your encouragement of using pornography as innocent entertainment keeps thousands of women in a cycle of emotional, physical dysfunction and addiction. I hope you look at the bigger picture of what this business does to vulnerable women, men and families instead of offering it as a cheesy, cheap way to get off on a horny day. Up with bikes I grew up in Reno and remember being able to reach Wells Avenue from Fourth Street. Now, there’s no pedestrian/bike path on the Wells overpass. Why is that? I am now grown and live downtown. I walk the streets often and realize the Fourth Street corridor is being cleaned up, so why not improve it for pedestrians?

These two issues have been plaguing me for quite some time. I hope if we can get this idea out to a broader range of people, it will catch on.

Down with bikes I say no more [being] conscious of cyclists until they are mandated to pay for registration and licensing, and provide vehicle operators insurance coverage and install a special use tax to cover the cost of all of the special traffic modifications for their use of roadways, along with cyclist training and certification of repair shops.

The cost of some bicycles is as much as a car and the cost of treating and rehabilitating an injured cyclist is the same if not more than people that are injured in auto accidents.

Still offensive One year ago we editorialized about actions taken by government to make roads less safe (“Traffic offenses,” June 6, 2013). We commented on how stoplights at the bottom of on-ramps make it impossible for drivers to get up to speed in order to safely merge into freeway-speed traffic and how this hazardous situation is going to get someone killed. And we drew attention to the way traffic officials distract drivers from the road. It’s this last problem that we return to now.

Go to the website of the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles and you can read this: “With more portable technology now than ever, driver distractions have risen to unprecedented numbers. But cell phones aren’t the only problem. Drivers can be distracted by eating and drinking, grooming, tuning the radio or even talking to passengers. Anything that takes a driver’s attention from the road is a potential hazard.”

Such as, for example, those digital reader-boards the state puts up on area freeways.

First, there is the problem of those boards along the side of the freeway that tell drivers how many minutes away from various places they are. We repeat, how much value is there in a valley this compact to know that we are three minutes away from the airport?

Enough value that it’s a good idea to draw the driver’s eyes off the road?

Second, and worse, there are the reader-boards over the freeway. These can and should serve a good purpose when there is urgent information to post to drivers about road conditions such as hazardous winds or chain requirements. But they are seldom used for that purpose. Here are some of the much more common messages they have borne: OPINION

Yes. Yes, I have noticed. It’s going to be a dry, hot summer. I worry. I like the change of seasons. I mean, I like the heat if we don’t get a whole bunch of it.

They are barely messages. They are advertising slogans, of limited utility, and dangerous when they haul the eyes of drivers away from the rear end of that about-to-brake car ahead.

Some of them messages actually require time to absorb and understand and, perhaps, to grab a pencil and write down:

Then there’s this one: BE ALERT/ BE AWARE/ BE ALIVE. That may not be possible with these messages overhead to keep drivers alert to the wrong things and put them in life-threatening situations.

These messages, whatever good purpose they are intended to serve, do serve a very dangerous purpose and they should be done away with. Unless there is a genuinely pressing message needing attention on these reader-boards, leave them dark. Ω |

Jim Rogers, higher education advocate No one suffered fools less gladly than Jim Rogers. But it’s difficult to think of another person who valued education more, or contributed so much of his wealth to back up his words.

Rogers died from cancer on June 14 at the age of 75. He was a self-made businessman, amassing a by huge fortune through the creation of Sheila Leslie a regional media empire spanning five Western states. At its height, he owned 14 television stations, including Reno’s KRNV. Jim was a serious philanthropist, donating hundreds of millions of dollars to educational institutions in the West. He gave so much to the University of Arizona College of Law—$137 million—that they named the school after him. He gave $20 million to the Idaho State University Foundation and $28.5 million to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas law school. Altogether he contributed over $60 million to Nevada schools.

As a legislator, I encountered Rogers when he was appointed to

serve as the chancellor of our higher education system in 2005. He worked for nothing, insisting his real salary be donated back to support education.

He followed me back to my office one day after a Ways and Means (budget) Committee hearing where he sat patiently in the audience listening to testimony about the holes in the higher education budget. He asked me how the budget could be increased to fund more of the enhancements he believed were necessary for student success.

When I told him not much was likely to happen unless he could help us figure out how to get the other party to have a serious discussion about creating a corporate tax in Nevada, he unleashed a tirade of four-letter words so loudly his staff hurried to shut the door before a lurking reporter could capture them.

“Do you know how much I pay in taxes on my television stations in Montana?” he railed. He quickly drew me a diagram of the Western states, explaining the kind of taxes

he paid in each of them and then placed a large zero over Nevada.

“Tax me, please!” he shouted.

I was taken aback by his abrasive and confrontational style, something that’s frowned upon in the legislative building where persuasive efforts are usually hidden behind closed doors or over cozy expensive dinners or golf games. I told him I was supportive of his goals and even his proposed method of raising the necessary money, but he’d have to convince the “no new taxes ever” contingent if any of it were to happen.

That statement produced another spout of foul language, but then he thanked me and abruptly left in pursuit of others who needed more convincing.

He expected people to listen to him not because he was rich, but because he was right.

Rogers stepped down as the volunteer chancellor in 2009 after a very public fight with Governor Jim Gibbons. Many felt he overstepped

professional boundaries when he wrote an op-ed criticizing Gibbons for proposing a 36 percent decrease in higher education funding referring to the Governor as “a greedy, uninterested, unengaged human being whose only goal, and I mean only goal, is to see what Gibbons can do for himself and his greedy friends.”

Rogers kept up with the times, embracing Twitter enthusiastically, a communications medium no other multi-millionaire his age could imagine. His daily tweets featured his vigorous advocacy for education right up until his death. I chuckled reading one unfiltered message posted on June 6 because I could hear him saying it out loud: “I can’t say the Board of Regents accomplishes nothing, but it must invest 10 dollars of its time for each dollar it gets from the Nevada legislature, which has done more to stifle Nevada’s growth than any other organized group of incompetent people.”

Jim, we miss you already. Ω

Lone wolves strike again On June 8, Jerad and Amanda Miller entered a Las Vegas pizza parlor. Amanda, 22, walked up behind 31 year old Las Vegas Metro Police Officer Igor Saldo and shot him in the back of the head, killing him instantly. Officer Alyn Beck, 41, was also shot by the couple and died later in surgery. by Brendan The Millers then walked into a Trainor nearby Walmart and told everyone to leave. Joseph Robert Wilcox, 31, a concealed-carry permit holder, tried to sneak up on Jerad but apparently lost sight of Amanda, who shot him dead. More police arrived and in the ensuing gun battle Jerad, 31, was shot by police and Amanda then shot herself as he lay dying.

Early reports say that the couple shouted something about “the revolution starts here.” They had their duffel bag wrapped in a Gadsden flag, the “Don’t Tread on Me” coiled snake flag that was flown during the American Revolution and is often flown at Tea Party events.

Then later, other narratives came forth. Jerad voted for Obama in 2008, and his conservative father was not happy. But the most significant thing in his record are two felony pot busts. Jerad’s rants blame these convictions for selling marijuana for his radicalization. Perhaps due to his conservative father’s disapproval of his vote for Obama, Jerad turned to the right, especially right wing conspiracy radio, for his inspiration. After a while his conversations were “rambling” and the neighbors thought the couple was “weird.”

The Millers tried to join the militia at the Bundy Ranch, but after a couple of days they were given some money and asked to leave. Jerad blames his felony record again and the militia confirmed they were wary of his criminal record. They likely thought Jerad seemed unstable.

Obviously the Millers’ act was not going to incite an armed revolution. They were delusional and irrational. They killed and died

senselessly. Police confirmed they were “lone wolves” with no ties to any organization.

On the Jon Ralston Reports show of June 12, Progress Now Action executive director Annette Magnus declared to the skeptical host that some kind of gun control action was needed if only “it would save even one life.”

What progressives overlook is that the possession of a firearm is now a recognized right, not a mere privilege. The courts will apply extra scrutiny to any law that deprives a law abiding citizen of his rights.

Guns are used far more often to prevent crime and protect lives and property than to murder innocents.

If a felon like Jerad can obtain weapons, what good did any background check do? Outlaws will always get guns. Jerad may have been a sympathetic outlaw due to his conviction for a victimless crime, but he lost all sympathy when he decided to randomly kill police officers.

Being radical does not equate with being violent. Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King were radicals.

Our founders were radicals for establishing a republic based on limited government.

Involuntary mental health commitments, more background checks and other anti-liberty proposals will prevent people from exercising their right to self protection. Government databases are notoriously error prone and many innocent people will be deprived of their rights due to data errors alone.

Here is an idea: Why not recognize the violence that lies with the state? Jerad Wilson and his star-crossed wife Amanda’s tragedy began with the government’s violence against them for selling plants to people who wanted to buy them. Instead of gun control, let’s talk about more government control.

If it would save even one life! Ω

Election office uses ’Publican Party tactic Washoe County Democratic officials are considering seeking legislation to deal with the county voter registrar’s office using Republican language on official election materials.

Republicans like to use the term “Democrat” as an adjective instead of a noun, as in “Democrat Party” or “Democrat Convention” because it grates on the ear and because they claim the party is not democratic. Republican pollster Frank Luntz, a leading party strategist who specializes in manipulation of language, has urged GOP candidates like Newt Gingrich to use “Democrat Party” in their speeches.

As a result, the term has been defined as an epithet or denigrating use in reference sources like Garner’s Modern American Usage. Some Republican leaders such as Jack Kemp have criticized the tactic as juvenile or loutish.

It’s unusual, however, for this kind of political language to make its way into official materials, as with “Democrat ballot.” This year’s Washoe 1988 LANGUAGE County primary election ballot, in effect, listed a nonexistent political party. “Democrat” appeared on both ballots and sample ballots. At the top of the viewscreen when Democrats voted this month it read, “OFFICIAL DEMOCRAT PRIMARY ELECTION BALLOT.” There is no Democrat Party in the state. The party is incorporated with the Nevada Secretary of State’s office as “Democratic Party of Nevada.”

Washoe County Democratic chair Janice Flanagan said she is prepared to seek legislation to correct political use of election language “because it’s being used as a slur and if we don’t stop it now it’ll never stop. It’ll be considered accepted usage.”

It’s uncertain when the practice began, but the RN&R inspected Washoe sample ballots for 1980, 1986 and 1988 issued by registrar Dianne Cornwall. All used the term “Democratic.”

When the incorrect usage was brought to the attention of registrar Dan Burk in 2008, he said it would not happen again, but it did (“Limbaugh’s dream ballot,” RN&R, June 3, 2010). One Nevada blogger, ZekeSaysSo, posted an August 2008 message about Burk that read in part, “Is he or isn’t he? ... A Republican.”

One legislative option is to mandate that political party officials inspect and sign off on the form of their party’s representations on the ballot. Or election officials could be required to use the legal names of parties.

A month before the primary, the RN&R asked Washoe County Voter Registrar Luanne Cutler whether the term “Democrat” would appear anywhere on primary election materials. After looking them over, she said no. Whether that was an oversight is unknown, but the registrar office’s website contains this language: “In Nevada, only the Democrat Party and Republican Party are [legally] designated as MAJOR Political Parties.” This week she said she would be happy to cooperate with the party to get rid of those misbegotten adjectives. “We want to use what is correct and will do whatever needs to be done.”

Last month in Oregon, Clackamas County Clerk Sherry Hall, who had previously been accused of favoritism toward tea partiers, got in trouble again for labeling an official ballot as a “Democrat” ballot.

According to Richard Nixon biographer Earl Mazo, there is no adjectival form for democrat: “The Greek adjective is demokratikos, which becomes in English ‘democratic.’ There is no Greek source for the adjective ‘democrat’.”

Good works stumble over a humdrum need Maria was great at the play part of being a teenager, not so much with the student part. She didn’t graduate by from high school.

Dennis Myers “At the time, I just didn’t want to study,” she now says. “I was being a teenager. I was just doing things, and going with my friends, and I didn’t think education was important. So I stopped going to school.”

She was 16. Her brother got her a job at a Taco Bell, where she worked for two years. She got married and had children. As she and her husband

provided for those children, the value of education began to make itself more apparent. She wanted to start school again, but now it was more difficult.

“It was harder for me to go back because of the day care,” she said.

She worked for several years, both as a mother and outside the home. Child care was always a stumbling block, but she kept yearning for a general equivalency diploma (GED), sometimes also called general educational development, so she could attend cosmetology school.

“What we used to be able to do is extend [diapers] to people that were really trying and just needed a couple of months or someone who’s [just] gotten a job … we can’t do that any more because we just don’t have the diapers.”

But the current students must come first, Russell said, and the diapers actually help keep them in classes.

“Women that come in to take our classes—and that runs from our computer classes, our high school equivalency prep, and English as a second language classes—all qualify for weekly diapers if they come in to class,” Russell said.

“This is a huge help, because, as Maria just told you, if you’re not working because you’re moving forward and going to class, having that boost with diapers really, really helps. And it’s a good incentive.”

Then she heard about the Women and Children’s Center of the Sierra. The Center helps young parents get their GEDs while providing child care and associated assistance. In her mid-20s, she started taking classes. Six months ago, she took her GED and also received computer training. The cost for cosmetology school is stiff, but she’s a little closer now.

Center director Pam Russell says Maria is the kind of person who, when confronted by obstacles, will find a way around them. The Center has seen women like Maria succeed.

Since September, 11 young women have received GEDs through the Center. Ten of them now have jobs.

It’s just the kind of program that left and right can agree on as a way of breaking cycles of poverty. That’s why it’s frustrating for Russell that the program is getting bogged down in a rather ordinary problem: Diapers.

The Center has provided diapers for the students. It’s one of the things that make the program work, diapers being a huge cost.

“A child in its first year will use about 2,700 diapers,” Russell said.

That number goes down a bit in subsequent years, but it’s a big ticket item through several years.

Previously, the Center was able to continue helping recent graduates of its classes until they got back on their feet.

When Russell took over as director, it wasn’t a problem. Some large businesses were providing regular contributions of enough diapers. But as the economy allegedly improved, “their corporate policies have changed and so now we no longer get donated diapers.

We get a few.”. The Center had to start buying more and more diapers as time went on. Also as the economy improved and more jobs became available, more young people with children wanted to get better jobs and so want their GEDs. The number of students grew. In January 2013, the Center provided 6,500 diapers. In January 2014 it was 17,000.

“The number of women seeking our services has grown monumentally, as well,” Russell said.

Community organizations and churches have occasionally done “diaper drives” for the Center, but those are usually supplementary or stopgap solutions.

Saying no to students needing diapers sets in motion very difficult outcomes, Russell said.

“If a mom can’t afford diapers … there’s a huge health risk to children, because moms will have to clean out a diaper and re-use it, which can lead to hideous diaper rash, urinary tract infections, and babies that are just cranky and unhappy and not well and that prevents them from thriving.”

That’s not the only consequence.

As her clients struggle to get their lives together, Pam Russell struggles to hold the program together.

“Additionally, the emotional impact on the moms is incredibly tough,” Russell said somberly.

“Moms that come to us for services are going to classes and when you talk to them, they’re doing it for their kids. They want to get out of poverty for their kids. They want to be able to provide for the kids. And if you can’t provide diapers for your kids, that takes an awful toll because you want to be a good mom.”

So Russell is spending an absurd amount of time not on curriculum or fund raising for equipment but on acquiring diapers. It’s not the kind of task she expected to dominate her days when she took the position, but lack of enough diapers is threatening to eat the Center’s mission alive.

“Right now we are paying 18.3 cents a diaper, which is the next to lowest we’ve found,” Russell said.

“And that comes to between $3,000 and $3,500 a month,” she added. Ω

The first commercial fracking project on public lands in the state of Nevada has just been approved by the Bureau of Land Management and will be four miles northwest of Wells, Nev. The project is Noble Energy’s Mary’s by Sage Leehey River Project.

“Right now, there are two exploratory wells that have been fracked on s age l@ private lands, but there has been no fracking done yet on federal, public news review.c om lands,” said Rob Mrowka, senior scientist at the Center for Biological Diversity. “But the approval of the environmental assessment means that they are going ahead with developing wells on federal lands as well.”

The land included in the project is a mixture of both private and public lands, but 20 wells are planned to be drilled on public lands.

Mrowka said that the CBD does not believe the project should have been approved at all but are also concerned for the manner in which this project was approved.

“There’s a number of shortcuts they’ve done, and none of them seem very appropriate,” Mrowka said.

BLM’s decision to do an environmental assessment instead of an environmental impact statement for this project and other fracking projects is a point of concern to Mrowka. Environmental assessments are not as thorough as environmental impact statements and do not allow for the same kind of public comment.

Nevada’s CBD is currently evaluating the situation to figure out what their next step will be, but because California’s CBD was recently successful in challenging the use of environmental assessments in fracking projects, they may resort to litigation.

Mrowka said he’s also worried about this project’s approval because a recent report by the United States Government Accountability Office stated that BLM has not been very effective in overseeing the oil and gas industry. Many new wells that are identified as higher pollution risks—about four in 10—do not get inspected.

The land included in this project is also priority habitat for greater sage grouse, meaning that the project could endanger a species which is awaiting listing under the Endangered Species Act. This is a concern that CBD has expressed in earlier issues with fracking in Nevada as well because BLM and the state are currently in the process of developing plans to handle greater sage grouse, their habitat and their conservation. Mrowka believes it is “shortsighted” of BLM to approve a fracking project in priority habitat when they haven’t made a decision about their greater sage grouse conservation plans yet.

“It just seems like, given the inability of regulatory agencies to control the industry, given the concerns about sage grouse, given the concerns that we’re already part way through a planning process, it seems like a rush to judgment, that we ought to be waiting until some of the pieces fall better into place,” Mrowka said. if you say the name “George Pickard,” many Reno music fans will nod with recognition and approval. But which George Pickard do they know?

College-aged music fans might know George Pickard, 19, the lanky, rich-voiced lead singer and upright bassist of the Americana band Farewell Belladonna, often spotted busking along the Truckee River in downtown Reno or performing at all-ages venues.

Every music fan worth his or her salt who lived in Reno during the ’90s or early ’00s has a good story or two about different George Pickard, 42, the charismatic singer, guitar player and whiskey baptismal preacher of the Atomiks, the high-energy rock ’n’ roll band that taught a generation of Renoites everything they needed to know about UFO conspiracies, alcohol-fueled religion and stage presence.

And older, casino-going Renoites probably know yet another George Pickard, 68, the gregarious, piano-playing, multi-instrumentalist singer and storyteller, who has worked the showrooms and lounges of Northern Nevada to charming, cabaret-style effect for decades.

Together, the three Georges Pickard represent a local family tradition and family industry of songwriting craft and showmanship. And through their music and recollections, it’s also possible to glimpse how being a songwriter and a performer in Reno has changed over the years.

For the purposes of this article, we’ll refer to them as George I, George II and George III—eldest to youngest—but the name George Pickard goes back even farther than that.

George II, of Atomiks fame, said that his grandmother told him he was the fourteenth of his name.

“ThE 3 GEOrGES” continued on page 14 These kind of “Are you related to—?” interactions are common occurrences for the Georges. George III, for example, sometimes receives Facebook messages asking if the Atomiks can play various events.

Atomiks performances are now relatively rare—just once or twice a year—but George I remains prolific, performing regularly at places like the Sands, the Carson Valley Inn, and the Carson Nugget, or venues in Yerington and Dayton.

George I is originally from Antioch, Calif.

He’s performed as a professional musician for his entire adult life, around the Bay Area, in Nashville, and touring around the country with various groups, often having brushes and near misses with fame.

“My dad always made a living playing music,” said George II. “He’s been successful with a career in music. How many people can say this? So that gave me a lot of innate confidence to say, You can do this and make money at it. I think that a lot of people go into music without that. … It was always a profession in my eyes. I was trying to be a professional musician and entertainer. I saw it as a skill set versus something that you just do for fun. My role model was a professional musician.”

Most of the bands that George I performed with predominantly played cover songs, but he was also always writing songs. He co-wrote the song “What Did You Do With Your Old 45s?” for singer Bobby Vinton. His music career touched on several pop genres, including disco and country. He recorded several funny novelty songs about topical subjects, like “Humphrey the Humpback Whale,” about a whale that had been trapped in the San Francisco Bay, or “The Jar,” a song about tracking down a clean urine sample.

One novelty song that George I wrote was “Coke Was It”—a song written in protest of the reformulation of the iconic soda in the mid ’80s. George I was inspired to write the song

by George II, who was then a cola-loving, 12-year-old boy who felt devastated and betrayed by the change in Coke.

After recording the song, George I hired a manager who booked him at the opening of an Albertson’s grocery store in Livermore, Calif.

Young George II came along to help with the live sound.

“We sat there by the stacks of beer and potatoes and dog food, and sang to people checking out,” said George I. “It was the worst gig in the whole world. We sold one tape, and the manager says, ‘Well, you made 10 bucks.’”

In the last few decades, George I has carved out a niche for himself as a locals’ favorite performer in the lounges all around the region.

“What’s really fun now is that I’m just observing it, like I’m not there,” he said.

“There’s this robot going forward, and I’m Oz behind the curtain going, OK, let’s do this!

And my body says, I don’t think we can do that anymore. But the brain works great.”

and I and our sister would help Dad load in and what not into the nightclubs, and they would give us endless Shirley Temples and Roy Rogerses, and we felt so cool hanging out at the bar while Dad set up,” he said.

Before long, he was running the lights or sound fixtures for the shows. Then, when he was about 14, George II started playing the piano onstage with his father at venues like the Fitzgeralds Club, the MGM and the Ormsby House in Carson City.

“I hear the chords happening, so he’s playing piano,” said George I. “He’s playing piano—then we got to pay him.”

One night at Fitzgeralds, George II begged his father to let him play the catchy, instantly recognizable keyboard solo of Del Shannon’s early ’60s hit “Runaway.” George I eventually agreed.

“And I totally screwed it up,” said George II. “It was off-time and it was my one part. I felt so bad. Dad let me have that solo, but what was true love was letting me have it again the next set.”

His father gave George II a shot at redemption.

“I did better,” said George II. “I don’t remember nailing it. But I felt a lot better about things after that. If I couldn’t have done that, I would have just carried that—it would have been like the dropped catch at the end of a game or something. I’d have to live with it forever.”

Eventually, George II started the Atomiks, a band that consistently put on unforgettable, whiskey-fueled live performances, toured the Three generations of music, and of musicians.

country on multiple occasions and recorded several classic records—the band’s 1995 debut full-length, Pontiac, deserves a mention in any discussion about all-time great Reno rock records.

With the band’s upright bass, rollicking drum rhythms, perfect coifs, and George II’s crooning vocal style, the band was often classified as shockabilly or rockabilly revivalists.

But George II always bristled at the easy genre identification.

“From the band perspective, they expected you to deliver that tribal message,” he said. “I found that stifling.”

Onstage, between songs, George II would deliver impassioned, satirical sermons with the fire-and-brimstone cadence of a country preacher before dropping shots of whiskey down the gullets of audience members.

Atomiks shows would often spiral into decadent rock ’n’ roll insanity.

“That guy needs to get out once in a while,” said George II of his stage persona.

“As long as he’s allowed out once in a while, then the rest of life is good, but if he doesn’t, then bad things happen. He needs a venue. The demon needs a sacrifice, a tribute.”

He said the Atomiks are actually working on a new album, which takes a psychedelic direction.

“The 140-character elevator pitch is, the band born out of a mushroom cloud has a mushroom trip,” he said. “We made a pact that we wouldn’t gig until we had another album in the can. It’s been a long time. It’s easy to go out and play the same stuff again. We don’t

even need to practice to do the same songs.”

And just as George II made his concert debut performing with his father, so too did George III first appear as a young teen onstage with his father’s band, subbing for Atomiks bassist Luke Hoffman for a gig at the Zephyr Lounge.

“I thought this is going to be a really cool experience,” said George II. “How cool is it that your son can fill in for the bass player?

And when it was actually happening, I was brought to tears—this is just so amazing, watching your baby’s hands play that instrument. And this sort of fractal mirror seeing your dad and your son all at the same time.”

The next generation George III just finished his freshman year at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he’s studying environmental engineering.

“I look at science with a creative perspective, in a less organized way, and that helps me to understand it,” he said, adding that his scientific training helps him to more easily grasp some of the finer details of music theory.

George I describes his grandson’s band, Farewell Belladonna, as “kick-ass bluegrass.”

“I’ve never heard Alison Krauss say, ‘shit,’” said George I. “That’s pretty cool. My grandson says ‘shit.’ I could have never said that on a record. We had to do that real clean stuff.”

George III himself is fairly reticent. Like his father, he comes alive onstage in an energetic way that can be difficult to reconcile with his soft-spoken presence in casual conversation. He describes his band as “playing rock music, but looking for a new way to express it.”

That new way of expressing rock music is through acoustic guitar, banjo and bass—no drums. But it’s still rock music in the lyrics and delivery. George III is often a vocal dead ringer for his father. For Atomiks fans, listening to Farewell Belladonna’s self-titled album from last year is like hearing some great, longlost Atomiks “unplugged” album—especially when a lyric like “He just got out of rehab with a bible in his hand” pops up in a song like “Place to Go.” But a recent Farewell Belladonna gig at the Holland Project was billed as the band’s last show.

“We’re kind of in transition right now— not really sure where we’re going, what we’re going to continue,” said George III. “We’re wrapping things up as they are right now. I’m not totally sure what direction I’m going to take it.”

“It’s interesting to see your son’s band go through all the challenges that you went through,” said George II. “Especially when you’re starting off, and you’re idealistic and optimistic. And a band is like marriage—sometimes even more intense than that. So, I’m watching him go through those things and working out relationship issues. They grow up together, and you can’t save them. You can try to offer some helpful advice and be encouraging, but they got to go through it. It’s his thing.

He gets to go through it. As much as I want to parent him in that moment and be a dad and protective, there’s no way to escape the cosmology of being in a band, the dharma of being in a band. You have to go through it on your own.”

Earl Grey, hot George I came to Reno, years ago, because it was a place where musicians could come and sustain a career, and even support a family on a single income, playing in casino bands.

That career model is largely gone. There aren’t bands playing multiple sets six or seven nights a week on various stages all around the casinos.

“Through my entire childhood, Dad never had another job,” said George II. “It was just playing music.”

“I got the tail end of it,” said George I. “When George started, they got the door and that was it. And they did well—they did really well. And now, Georgie plays a lot of venues, and I think the most money he gets is probably when you play out there on the street.”

George III acknowledges that’s probably true. His band makes more money busking on the street than playing in some of the proper venues. So, there’s the music industry in Reno in a nutshell—in just a couple of generations, a career in music has gone from making a living and supporting a family playing on glitzy casino stages to making pocket change out on the streets.

The plus side of this change, however, is greater creative freedom.

“Nowadays you go into any venue, and you play your tunes,” said George I. “You don’t play ‘Proud Mary.’”

“We played ‘Proud Mary,’” said George II, with a laugh.

“Well, you’d do some covers, but they’d be your choice,” said George I.

Live concerts are now, for many people, primarily a place to see touring bands with familiar recordings. The music in clubs and bars is often prerecorded stuff. The practice of just going someplace comfortable, having a beer, and enjoying an unknown band isn’t as prevalent as it once was.

“Most cover bands were wannabe writers and wannabe album groups, they just hadn’t been signed yet,” said George I. “We were playing everybody else’s songs, but we were writing our own songs”—but only rarely playing them in concert.

Another, more recent change in Reno music has been the advent of above-ground all-ages music venues, probably best epitomized by the Holland Project.

“The all-ages thing now is accepted,” said George II. “It’s sanctioned by the city in a way.

But when I was in high school, and in my first bands, and when the Atomiks were first starting out, the police would show up and it would be over. Nobody wanted you to play if you were under 21.”

“One common thread, even in my time, everyone said, you better have a back-up plan because you won’t make it in music,” said George I. “They just humored you. You better study in school because when this doesn’t pan out you’re going to need something to fall back on. Go to work in the factory.”

Another thread running through the three is a compulsion toward songwriting.

“It always comes from a title for me,” said George I. “Somebody will say something and then there comes the song. Boom. One day, we cowrote a song with Bobby Vinton years ago, who was a crooner in the '60s, and this

girl and I were sitting in the studio one day and she said, ‘What did you do with your old 45s? ’And I said ’What Did You Do With Your Old 45s’? That’s a title. That’s how it comes. I love stories.”

sort of rhythmic guitar and kind of voice out from there until it comes together. It’s all in the words, but they sort of just come out of nowhere. It’s like accessing a trance, like chanting. It’ll start without any meaning and then the meaning will come together as the words work out.”

“It’s like writing with a Ouija board,” said George II. “You take away the filters of ego and just let this stuff come out and then go back and try to arrange it.”

“We love writing, performing—all three of us,” said George I. “We all want to do it because of DNA structure, I think. My father and mom did it. They didn’t do it full-time, but they played the weekends, played the Elks Club and the Moose lodge and the bars. Dad, with a cigarette dangling, would play guitar, mom singing, they’d collect their tips and money and come home. It’s always been for the love of the craft.”

“For me, it’s like a religious practice,” said George II. “It’s the only sure way to connect to the greater thing. When music is good, there’s nothing better. For me, feeling connected, feeling that I’m in the right place, doing the right thing, when it works.”

“I don’t know what else I would do,” said George III. “Even when I was young, it was just part of me. To have something to say and go out there. It just feels right to have a guitar or a bass in hand and sing to the crowd.”

If you’re a vegetarian, you’ve been there: Everyone wants to go out to eat and they take you to a place where your options are between a bowl of lettuce, a side of fries, or eating beforehand because even the salads are covered in bacon and apparently entrees without meat don’t exist. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Here are some unexpected restaurants

Miguel’s has been a local favorite and landmark for ages, opening in 1959. It’s a family business known for authentic Mexican dishes. I ordered the cheese enchilada and chile relleno lunch special ($9.50), and I wasn’t disappointed. There was a sinful amount of cheese and it was a glorious thing.

The enchilada was pretty mild, and the Ortega pepper was savory. It also came with a side of rice and beans that really tied together the meal. Miguel’s is great because they have a few enchiladas, appetizers and even a vegetarian burrito that you can order without having to ask for changes to make it vegetarian.

Since going vegetarian, BJ’s has been one of my favorite restaurants. It has a ton of vegetarian options, and it’s a chain, with locations nationwide that I’m often able to find when I travel. It has a diverse menu, with plenty of meatless choices.

The avocado eggrolls ($10.50) are a great way to start off a meal. The creamy, mild taste of the avocado really balances the bolder flavors of the spices and chipotle. BJ’s also has spinach stuffed mushrooms ($5.25) that are perfect for no-guilt snacking. The last time I went, I had the garden vegetable baked potato and tomato bisque lunch special ($8). The bisque was creamy and thick, which made it really satisfying, while the baked potato was equally good. It had loads of vegetables and was smothered in cheese, which made it the perfect comfort food for a chilly afternoon.

Just because you’ve stopped eating meat doesn’t mean you’ve stopped watching sports. At Bully’s, you can watch the Giants without having to eat the obligatory hot wings with your beer.

There are several locations around the valley, but I like the one in the northwest, off Mae Anne Avenue. For your finger foods, there’s a classic selection of fried foods ($4.50-$10) like shoestring fries, mozzarella sticks and fried zucchini. Or if you’ve got a hankering for a bigger meal, you can also get a veggie burger ($8). I had “The J” sandwich along with a side of steamed vegetables. While the steamed veggies were a little on the soggy side, the sandwich definitely made up for it. Layered with spinach, artichoke hearts, avocado, tomatoes and onions, and drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette, “The J” ($8) was actually pretty tasty, and definitely not something I’d expect to find at a sports bar. The great thing about Bully’s is the menu has a varied selection, so there are vegetarian options whether you want to carb-load, have a big meal, or want something lighter.

Kei is a little gem in Carson City. It’s got a chic ambience with great service to boot. I got the lunch all-you-can-eat special ($17.95). Normally I stop at three rolls, but I had to try the tempura asparagus, tempura veggie, two of the veggie heaven rolls, and two of the garden rolls. Of course, there are only a few rolls that are vegetarian, but they were delicious.

The veggie heaven roll and the tempura asparagus rolls were

crunchy and fantastic. Normally, asparagus is way too potent and stringy, and just offends my senses, but in the roll, it was savory and tender. Compared to the cooked rolls, the garden rolls with raw veggies really held their own. They were crisp, fresh, and the flavor from the vegetables really popped because of it. I had Michael as a sushi chef and on my last garden roll, he topped it off with pico de gallo. Mind blown—that’s allowed in Sushi? It definitely put an unexpected twist on a regular roll.

With burgers in the name, you might think it’s a safe bet that you shouldn’t take a vegetarian there. But at Red Robin, any burger they make can be substituted with a Gardenburger or Boca vegan patty for no extra charge. From there, you can order one of their creations or build your own. To start off, I had an order of guac, chips and salsa ($5). It all tasted really fresh and I wouldn’t dare complain about endless warm tortilla chips. Then I had the ‘shroom and Swiss burger ($10) with a Boca vegan patty. Now, I knew what I was getting into.

A veggie patty will never be the prettiest sight and will also tend to look pale and uncomfortable. But that just doesn’t detract from the taste. The burger as a whole was a winner.

The sautéed mushrooms were really flavorful and the garlic Parmesan spread really took the burger to the top. I also had a side of steamed broccoli ($1.29) that was tender, but firm enough to stay away from being a soggy mess. To tie it all together, the bottomless fries that came with the burger made sure there was no way I was going home hungry.

I knew that finding a steakhouse with meatless dishes would be the ultimate challenge. But then I came across Old Range Steakhouse and I wasn’t disappointed. It’s on the pricey side, but you can have dinner in a cozy, rustic ambience with a killer view of Lake Tahoe. All of their salads ($14) are huge and can be a meal in themselves. The Greek Spinach salad was my personal favorite. It had such a fresh flavor that was amped up by the tanginess of the feta cheese. They’ve also got vegetarian sides ($8-$9) and you can order a few of them to make a meal. The sautéed mushrooms I ordered were earthy and flavorful, and I swear I could live off them.

I also ordered the cream spinach, which normally isn’t my style, considering I leave creamed vegetables for infants and the elderly. But I was pleasantly surprised by how good it tasted and how it complemented the whole meal. For the main course, I had the artichoke sauté ($24). It was full of artichoke hearts as well as broccolini, red peppers and other veggies. It wasn’t overly seasoned, which really let the natural flavors of the different vegetables blend and speak for themselves. The dish also came with a side of garlic mashed potatoes which were the perfect amount of rich and chunky. Old Range Steakhouse also offers gnocchi ($22), a potato pasta dish that is ridiculously popular and incredibly filling. With plenty of options, for once, taking a vegetarian to a steakhouse isn’t the start to a bad joke. Ω

Shell of a good time

The Desert Tortoise There’s a stretch of Main Street in Fernley, the little bedroom community of less than by 20,000 people about 30 miles east of Brad Bynum Sparks, that contains first-rate public artworks—large roadside-attraction bradb@ news review.c om sculptures, which inspire passersby to stop the car, step out, walk around and gawk.

These sculptures were brought to the town by the Burning Man-affiliated Black Rock Arts Foundation and a National Endowment for the Arts grant for bringing large artworks to small towns. Most of the art will rotate out, but one sculpture is a "the desert tortoise" permanent installation, partly because it’s is on main Street in Fernley. essentially too heavy to move.

“It’ll be here forever,” said Reno artist Pan Pantoja. “Long after this town blows away, this thing will still be sitting here. It’s over 70 tons. There’s no way to move it. No way it’s ever going to go anywhere.”

The sculpture, called “Desert Tortoise,” is just that—a large desert tortoise made of intricately carved granite boulders. Pantoja led a team of about 20 artists who worked on the project. In

addition to the many artists who worked on it, Pantoja and company also involved the community of Fernley, recruiting thousands of kids from all the schools in the city to contribute paintings on small square tiles, representing classic Nevada imagery like bighorn sheep, wild horses, Highway 50 and Mark Twain, as well as personal imagery, like personal photos and memorials to fallen friends. The artists collected so many of these tiles that they’ve decided to build another piece, a snake shaped bench to accompany the tortoise.

Pantoja chose the image of the tortoise partly because it’s the Nevada state reptile, and also because of mythological references to the mystical powers of tortoises, but also because it was an image he was able to create with a simple mock-up of rocks he found near his own home, with a limited amount of time to submit the grant proposal.

“I walked out into my front yard and I grabbed six rocks and put them into a shape and called it a tortoise,” he said.

“It’s more than just a public art piece,” said Aric Shapiro, another Reno artist who worked on the sculpture. “It’s literally a monument. It’s unmovable.”

Pantoja and the other artists spent hundreds of hours going to schools to collect the tiles, negotiating for transportation of the granite, as well as actually creating and installing the sculpture.

“You’ve got to pick the right rocks,” said Shapiro. “We spent a good three weeks driving from quarry to quarry to quarry.”

With the involvement of the school kids and its installation in a relatively small town, “The Desert Tortoise” is an

unusually communityoriented sculpture.

“We had such a huge amount of community support,” said Shapiro.

“Everybody really wanted to be involved and was really happy about it. …

The whole time we were installing, just putting these tiles in place, there was a constant stream of people.”

It’s the rare sculpture that catches the eye from the road and also reveals its personal details up close.

And with its recognizable animal shape, it has all-ages appeal.

“It’s kind of a blessing from the public point of view because we’ve never had anything like this,” said Bill Keever, building inspector for the city of Fernley. “We have regular parks that serve the public, but this is something new. This is something that the city grasped their personalities around. They can see what the artists are trying to portray and their ambition.” Ω

Located in the heart of Midtown, the new restaurant Mari and Chuy Gutierrez have created is very different from that which is now dust. Paired with hipster-approved architecture and design—sparse decoration, roll-up “garage doors” that open to patio dining, and a somehow classic-yet-modern color palette—is a stripped-down menu that I think could be the smartest decision made by this family of seasoned restaurateurs.

Gone is the 100 item list of a la carte fare and combo platters typical of Mexican-American cuisine, replaced by a single page presentation of dinner categories. Appetizers, soups, salads, desserts, and separate sections of pork, beef, seafood and vegetarian specialties are listed, each with five or fewer dishes. Even more brief is the lunch menu on the flip side. This style of service indicates a chef who has chosen to perfect and focus on each dish until it’s exactly how he wants it. He’s selected dishes

he most wants to share with his guests.

Right from the start, my wife and I were made welcome by Chuy and his staff, and the service throughout our meal was top notch. Even the water got special treatment, with slices of lemon and cucumber lending an extra zing of refreshment on a summer evening. My wife loved her Mango Margarita ($8), despite a dash of buyer’s remorse upon discovering a cilantro version on the specials board. She and Chuy apparently share the same affection for that pungent herb.

With drinks came complimentary chips and a delicious pico de gallo.

We prefer light, thin chips served warm. Though fresh and warm, these were pretty thick. However, the queso fundido con chorizo appetizer ($6) would be impossible to scoop up with a less-stout bit of fried tortilla, so I’m guessing those chips were designed with that in mind. Served on a small cast iron skillet, this mix of melted cheese and homemade pork sausage is stupid good, with a touch of cinnamon sending it over the top.

Brilliant. We also enjoyed the aguacate relleno con camarones starter ($7), featuring half an avocado overflowing with “special secret shrimp salad” on a bed of romaine lettuce.

For entrees, my wife ordered tacos de pescado ($13) and I chose the carnitas ($15). Both were served with rice and (whole) beans, artfully presented with a leaf of romaine, slice of tomato, chunk of fresh cheese, radish floret, and lime wedges for the fish. All garnishes were fresh, the beans and rice tasty, and the homemade flour and corn tortillas above-par. The texture of the fish was a bit soft, and I found the pork carnitas to be fattier, larger pieces than I normally expect. Aside from this, we both enjoyed the flavors of each dish, and the portions were quite decent for the money.

Bellies full, we shared the homemade caramel flan ($4). With a texture more akin to cheesecake than custard and great flavor, this dessert could convert non-fans of the traditional treat. The inclusion of a large, sliced strawberry on the side and a splash of coffee liqueur added tableside by Chuy himself sealed the deal. Coming and going, this chef and his crew demonstrate the meaning of hospitality. Ω

Jersey Boys Director Clint Eastwood continues his creative slump with Jersey Boys, a drab adaptation of the Broadway musical which further proves something that Eastwood established 45 years ago with his appearance in Paint Your Wagon: Dirty Harry has no business being around a movie musical!

Oh sure, he’s musically inclined. He’s by been composing scores for some of his Bob Grimm movies as of late, but I’d like to point out that those scores kind of suck, especially that bgrimm@ newsreview.c om stupid “Gran Torino” song. His musical taste travel towards the meandering and sleepy.

Jersey Boys tells the story of Frankie Valli (John Lloyd Young, who performed the role on Broadway) and The Four Seasons, and how they went from being small time hoods in New Jersey to big time rock stars. I’ve never seen the Broadway show, but I have to think its success means it was somewhat enjoyable and lively. The movie version is neither of these things.

As they did in the musical, each member of the Four Seasons breaks the fourth wall to address the audience, Ray Liotta in Goodfellas or Ferris Bueller style. It’s a gimmick that feels forced the way Eastwood stages it. Every time somebody faced the camera and started gabbing in this movie, I found myself getting annoyed.

Much of the focus of the film falls on Tommy DeVito (Vincent Piazza), an early leader of the band and a bad influence on Frankie. Over the course of time, DeVito gets himself deep in debt to the point that he has to be bailed out by a friend in the mob, represented here as Gyp DeCarlo and played by Christopher Walken in a thankless role.

The movie follows the band through their early session musician days, and even includes a brief appearance by Joe Pesci (Joseph Russo) before his Hollywood emergence. Pesci apparently had a real life role in getting the original band together.

The Four Seasons have some great songs, including “Rag Doll,” “Walk Like a Man” and “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night!).” Young gives it a good go belting out the hits with something akin to Valli’s signature falsetto, and it’s admirable that Eastwood and his performers opted to have the music performed live on set rather than lip-synching.

I don’t know if it was the theater I was in, but something happens in the final mix that flattens the overall musical presentation.

The songs, although competently performed, lack a certain spark. They just feel like pale copies of the originals.

The timing for this film seems a bit odd.

It arrived with little to no fanfare during a drab week of the summer movie season, where it was pitted against Think Like a Man, Too. It’s almost as if Warner Brothers knew they had a stinker on their hands, and tried to dump their movie in a week with little competition to give it a fighting chance.

Clint Eastwood films usually get high profile, awards season releases, but this one was snuck out there for an unsuspecting, unresponsive public.

Let it be said that this is the second Eastwood movie in a row—after the terrible J. Edgar—to feature brutally bad makeup.

As the movie travels from the ’60s into the ’70s, it’s a parade of bad wigs and hilarious mustaches. By the time The Four Seasons reunite for their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1990, they look, well, silly.

I’ve concocted better old man makeup on Halloween using flour and baby powder.

The movie does come alive during the closing credits, where all the members of the cast gather for a triumphant musical medley finale.

It’s the only time that Jersey Boys feels like a legitimate, joyful movie musical and has a real pulse. It’s much too little, way too late. Ω

22 Jump Street

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, an unlikely duo if there ever was one, basically repeat the same steps of their very funny 21 Jump Street, and they do it in a way that keeps things fresh while knowingly recycling the same plot. And by knowingly, I mean this film acknowledges what it is, a run-of-the-mill sequel, for its entire running time. It’s a self-mocking technique that works well thanks to its stars and the deft comic direction of returning directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are on a roll, having also directed this year’s The Lego Movie. This one picks up where the first film left off, with Captain Dickson (Ice Cube in serious comic overdrive) assigning Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) to college. In college, they will do exactly what they did undercover in the first movie: Infiltrate the dealers, find the supplier.

They get the laughs the same way, through Hill’s self-deprecating, rat-a-tat delivery, and Tatum’s dumb lug shtick. It worked well the first time, and it works well again.

Edge of Tomorrow

In the future, Earth is fighting a crazed, vicious alien force that’s shredding our armies with little effort. Tom Cruise plays Cage, an armed forces officer who serves more as a public relations man than anybody who belongs on a battlefield. After a publicity tour, he sits down with a hard-nosed general (a cold Brendan Gleeson) and finds out that he is going into battle. Cage is justifiably terrified, and his first taste of battle doesn’t go well, and he’s killed in especially gruesome fashion. For reasons I won’t give away, he instantly wakes up after his death, transported back to a moment shortly after his meeting with the general, and before the battle that will take his life. Cage is in a seriously messed up situation. He starts repeating the same day, and dying every time. He does his best to change that outcome, but he always winds up meeting a grisly death and waking up in the same place. He eventually comes into contact with Rita (Emily Blunt), the military’s poster girl for the perfect soldier. By repeating days with Rita, Cage starts to build himself up as a soldier, discover secrets about the enemy, and increasing life longevity chances for himself and mankind. The film’s handling of this situation is thrilling and even funny, thanks to Cruise’s strong performance and nice direction by Doug Liman (Swingers, The Bourne Identity). It will easily stand as one of 2014’s best.

The Fault In Our Stars

I will not lie to you. Sometimes, I walk into a movie theater with drooping shoulders, generally uninterested in what a movie might offer due to advance trailer previews or press that failed to generate my excitement. I walked into this one feeling that way, fearing I was in for a sap-fest. Boy, was I wrong. Shailene Woodley is downright incredible as Hazel, a 16 year-old struggling with thyroid cancer. After being sent to a support group by her mother (Laura Dern—I just love her) she meets Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort—so charming it’s almost disgusting) a basketball player who lost his leg to cancer, but sure as hell hasn’t lost his lust for life. The two hit it off, and the result is the best teen romance since The Spectacular Now, which also starred Woodley. The film handles its subject matter with enough grace for a thousand movies. When Gus, Hazel and her mom travel to Amsterdam to meet Hazel’s favorite author (Willem DaFoe—on freaking fire), their meeting will stand as one of the best scenes of 2014. Much praise goes to director Josh Boone for making a supremely entertaining film, and to author John Green, who wrote the 2012 novel the film is based on. You could call it a tearjerker, but that seems a little insulting to me. There’s nothing manipulative about Boone’s direction, or the performances by Woodley, Elgort, Dern, Nat Wolff and everybody else in the cast. They all won me over in a big way.

Maleficent

Angelina Jolie plays the title character, the infamous horned villain from Sleeping Beauty. There’s a little bit of revisionist history here, with Maleficent portrayed as more of a fallen angel rather than a straight up baddie.

The whole thing almost works because Jolie is damned good in this film, especially when the script allows for her to bellow curses and just act devilish. It gets a little sleepy at times when it deals with, well, Sleeping Beauty (Elle Fanning), the young woman who stands to have a very bad 16th birthday thanks to a Maleficent curse. Jolie has a creepy getup that I thought would bother

me, but I kind of liked looking at it after a while.

It’s the world surrounding her that I found a bit pedestrian. Director Robert Stromberg worked as a production designer on films like Alice in Wonderland, Avatar and Oz the Great and Powerful. I didn’t like any of those movies and, in the end, I don’t really like this one. At this point in watching Stromberg’s work, I’m just not taken by his weird visual worlds. They put me off for some reason, and have a choppy pop-up book feel to them. On the plus side, it is better than Alice and Oz, and perhaps even Avatar. On the negative side, it’s still not all that good.

A Million Ways to Die in the West

Seth MacFarlane’s second feature directorial effort after the breezy and hilarious Ted is a lumbering, only sporadically funny enterprise. It’s not awful, and it does have its share of giggles, but it can’t be classified as anything near a good movie. That’s a kick in the balls, because some slicker editing and “Whoa, Nellie!” pulling back on the gross-out reins could’ve kept this thing closer to 90 minutes instead of nearly two hours and gotten rid of the moments that go too far in a bad way. Like Mel Brooks before him with the classic Blazing Saddles, MacFarlane tries to make a satiric Western that truly looks and feels like a Western. He gets the shots right via decent cinematography, but his tempo is way off. While Blazing Saddles had the exuberance of a grand western, MacFarlane’s dependence on comic violence and often slow pacing feels like he’s trying to make something like Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven in a funny way. It just doesn’t work. MacFarlane plays Albert, a snarky, aheadof-his-time sarcastic guy trying to survive in the great American West. He’s trying to make a go of it as a sheep farmer, but he’s terrible at it. He’s always getting into trouble with his wise mouth, and his inability to stand up for himself in manly gunfights has earned the ire of his girlfriend, Louise (Amanda Seyfried). Charlize Theron is a nice presence as the new girl in town who gets Albert smiling again, but she isn’t enough to make this worth seeing.

The Rover

In a post economic collapse Australia, Eric (Guy Pearce) stops for a drink in a dirty bar and promptly has his car stolen. He gets a truck in exchange for that car, but he doesn’t care, and immediately begins a relentless pursuit of his vehicle. Along the way, he picks up Rey (Robert Pattinson), an injured brother of one of the car thieves. They form a strange alliance that results in many deaths in the pursuit of an automobile and retribution. David Michod (Animal Kingdom) has made a moody film using a mighty uncomfortable-looking Australian Outback. Pearce delivers some of his finest, fiercest work since the underrated The Proposition, while Pattinson is extremely good as the simple, messed-up Rey. The film also features Scoot McNairy, an actor piling up the great performances, in a small role but very noticeable role as Rey’s brother. The film is full of stark imagery, sudden violence, and dirt. Everything is covered in dirt.

The grime suits the story, a story that proves that you don’t need a heavy, complicated plot to make a good movie.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Director Bryan Singer returns to the XMen franchise with this ingenious chapter that includes both the main X-Men casts, time travel and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine holding everything together. The movie starts in the future, where robotic monsters called the Sentinels are giving the Mutants a truly hard time in a post-apocalyptic world. All hope seems to be lost until Charles Xavier/Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and his crew figure out a way to time travel. The hope is to cease the production of the Sentinels, which were created by Dr. Bolivar Trask (the always excellent Peter Dinklage) and take Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) off a dangerous destructive path. Jackman’s Logan makes the trip the 1970s, where he wears a cool leather coat and still has bone claws. The action is terrific, especially in a sequence where Peter/ Quicksilver (Evan Peters) foils a gun attack, and another where young Magneto (Michael Fassbender) uses an entire baseball stadium for nefarious purposes. The cast’s true standout would be James McAvoy as young Charles, still messed up after the events of X-Men: First Class. He adds a truly dramatic dimension to the proceedings. Having Singer back proves to be a good thing. The franchise surely suits his talents.

Ragged time CW & Mr. Spoons Do chicks dig ragtime?

According to CW, guitarist and singer of the duo CW & Mr. by Kent Irwin Spoons, ragtime has always been about getting the ladies off their feet and dancing.

“In the early days, women used to have to take off their corsets to start dancing,” says CW. “It wasn’t always the most respectable music.”

The other half of the band is Mr. Spoons, a barrel-chested man with an easy smile who plays an eclectic smorgasbord of percussion—a crash cymbal, a bell, a tambourine, a woodblock, two cowbells, a pair of tin cans, two halves of a coconut, all of it arranged on a pipe, anchored at the bottom by a wooden bucket. He calls it “The Contraption.”

Before becoming Mr. Spoons, he dabbled in guitar and mandolin. He was a bit stage shy until a guitarist in a friend’s band had suffered a heart attack just before his slot at the Virginia City Bluegrass Festival, and Mr. Spoons was called to fill in at the last minute.

He wouldn’t have imagined playing spoons until the rest of the band signed him up for a live jam session in front of the festival crowd. They handed him a pair of spoons and shoved him on stage, where he tried to pick up the instrument as he went along. It came to a point in the song where the frontman started calling out solos.

“Guitar!” he called. “Mandolin!”

“Fiddle!”

Then, “Spoons!”

“I started whacking the spoons on my knee, and the crowd went wild,” says Mr. Spoons.

Although he provides the percussion for the band, Mr. Spoons doesn’t claim to be a drummer.

Listening to the band, it’s clear that he doesn’t play a beat, he plays the song. He knocks on the tin cans, then hits a bell, then blows his whistle. He rarely plays a song the same way twice. The iconic ragtime rhythm is instead provided by CW on guitar, playing with a thumbpick, parlor style.

CW & Mr. Spoons play on the upbeat side of the folk spectrum, with a sound that aims to make its listeners get up and move their feet.

An accomplished musicologist, with a book out about the music of the Gold Rush, CW identifies ragtime as the father of a long lineage of American dance music, including jazz and eventually, rock and roll.

“A lot of different bands try and do ragtime,” says CW. “Bluegrass bands play ragtime at 90 miles an hour, jazz bands play ragtime cool.

We’re not cool. We’re hot.” Ω

For 50 years, CW has been following Wild Wanda’s siren song, leading him west. He started playing music at twelve, after receiving some disconcerting news.

“My orthodontist told me my teeth were too crooked to play clarinet,” he says. “So I picked up guitar.”

In the ’60s, during folk music’s revival in the states, a divide was formed between those who aimed to follow the traditional masters, and those who wanted to burn a new path forward. Singers like Bob Dylan took the form of protest songs and brought it new meaning, while others sought to preserve America’s musical roots. CW fell into the latter category, aiming to recreate the atmosphere of his heroes, including Blind Blake and Blind Willie McTell. He moved west, with the goal of mastering Western ragtime guitar.

Carbon dating I am a single 58-year-old woman with a one-year subscription to eHarmony. In the six months I’ve been on, only two men have contacted me. Of the dozen men I’ve reached out to, only one responded, and nothing came of it. I’m stumped as to why I’m getting such a sparse response. I am attractive, very fit, have a career, and own a home. Is my online dating experience typical for women my age? Sad to think I’ll face the next 20 to 25 years without a partner. And I am not just sitting at home waiting for a man to fall into my lap. I’m in a cycling club, a wine group, a music lovers group, and a craft beer group. Yet none of it has produced a boyfriend.

On dating sites, where the face-to-face embarrassment of overstepping the bounds of reality has been removed, 70-something men are hitting on 30-something women as fast as their wrinkly fingers can hit “send.” In other words, the youngest guy to even include 58-year-old women in his search criteria will likely want to talk about Titanic—not the movie, but the boat wreck he survived.

Sure, dating sites promote themselves as a bonanza-inwaiting for people of all ages, but the truth is, online dating is heavily skewed toward younger people. It works like dog years. You may be 58 on your passport and driver’s license, but in Match.com years, you’re 406 going on 407.

Also, men on dating sites care first and foremost about your four or five profile pictures—in which you’re competing with pix of women in their early 20s, typically the height of female hotitude. Musical interests? Favorite hobbies? You may as well list them in Cantonese.

But there is hope for you, and it comes from behavioral economics research by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky. It turns out that we decide the value of things not out of the blue but rather by comparing them with similar alternatives. In other words, you need an “anchor” to make yourself look more attractive to men, and no, I’m not suggesting you start accessorizing with the big iron thing from a ship. An anchor is a reference point for comparison.

As a 58-year-old who takes care of herself, you’ll look far more appealing in a neighborhood filled with 58-year-old reference points than 20-something ones, such as. for example, on a dating site specifically for singles over 50, such as OurTime.com. The same goes for activities. The best groups for you are those where you aren’t the anchor making some 22-year-old of average attractiveness look hot. It may also help to acknowledge and try to laugh about how hard dating is for women your age. Seeing this simply as an annoying fact of life after 50 may help you take it less personally.

It could also lead you to a greater appreciation of later life’s small victories, like when sex ends with a man rolling over and snoring—as opposed to being zipped into a bag by the coroner. Ω

Well, I’d been in the restaurant business for years but didn’t like the hours, and sometimes customers are not always so nice in the restaurant business. But in the candy business, all of our customers are so nice.

They’re either buying a gift for someone or treating themselves, and it’s just a pleasure to be here all day.

Why candy making?

Well, I actually got a job—my husband got transferred to Reno—and I got a job in another candy store and I always felt that I could do it better. One of the people I was working with, who has now worked for me for 24 years, and I thought that we could do it better and use better ingredients. And when we had the chance we opened up our store in Truckee.

Is it still there?

Oh, yes—just hit 19 years.

You’re a chain?

Yes, we’re a chain, chain of two [laughs].

And this one hits 15 years this year.

Well, for a while, things were pretty slow. But we have some amazing regular customers who keep coming back to us.

They come for every holiday, every anniversary, every birthday, and they’ve kept us afloat. And now we have Nordstrom Rack going in next door, so things should pick up a little bit.

You’re very thin. How do you manage that in a candy store?

What kind of custom orders do you get?

We walk in and take a seat at a circle table ringed with padded stools. We settle on down, order the first round and try to get a read on what we’ve got ourselves into. It’s Saturday night at The Roadhouse, and we’re here to catch a dose of its prized and powerful medicine.

There are differences between nightclubs and roadhouses. A nightclub is urban; a roadhouse is relatively rural. A nightclub is surrounded by curbs; a roadhouse is often surrounded by weeds. A nightclub will be jazzy and bluesy, while a roadhouse will inevitably drift toward country honk. A nightclub will sell lots of cocktails, while the roadhouse sells tons of beer.

A roadhouse is at its best on Saturday night. That’s usually when the juke-joint medicine flows abundantly.

We can do anything that we already have in one kind of chocolate, say we only make it in milk chocolate right now, we can make in dark, white. If there’s no sugar in the center, like a nut, we can make it in sugar free, milk or dark. There’s some things that we enjoy the challenge of. We can do certain kinds of molded items for any kind of holiday. If somebody gives us, “I would kind of like to have such-and-such that my mother used to make years ago,” we will

Then there are the young male superfans at the front table who are there to watch every note being picked by the guitarist, and the semi pie-eyed codgers in the back who would be drinking and playing video poker no matter who was on stage, and the band manager at the bar who nurses a drink and started off into the night wondering where the hell everybody is.

They’re all players in The Roadhouse Show this Saturday night, and all headed for a multi-Bayer Sunday morning. Ω

groove are here and in perfect combination-- elements like a good bar, a good band and enough people so you and your date are never solo on the dance floor, but not so many people that your space gets violated.

An hour after our arrival, the hullabaloo comes together. Two couples cracked the dance floor a couple of tunes ago, and now there’s a lively little dancefest going in front of the stage. The band, a rockin’ blues outfit, is very good, and their guitar man is solid. He’s a swinging hep cat all dolled up in a black suit that tells us the man is very serious about playing party blues music. Those of us on the congregational dance floor have to say, “Right on, brother and “May your sweet ringing tones motivate in ways that will lead to our various thirsts being quenched.”

We go back to our station for fresh beer. At a nearby table, we spy one of the classic characters of the Roadhouse Experience, a Stranded Sister of the Night. She’s wriggling in her chair and obviously dying to get up and dance with her male com-

t’s about to be July again, and that means it’s time for Artown.

For the entirety of the month of July—and actually the first day of August this year, too—there will be arts events each and every day as the annual festival takes over the town. Artown has become a huge celebration since the first festival in 1996, and about 300,000 people attend its events throughout the month each year. With so many days and events in various categories to choose from, it can get a bit overwhelming, so we’ve put together our annual Artown guide to help get you into the Artown mood and navigate through the 32 days of art all over town.

Each Friday of the month of July, the RN&R puts on the Rollin’ On the River concert series with a different headliner each week. This year they include: Los Pinguos, Brad Wilson and The System: The Bob Seger Tribute Band. On the Fourth, the Reno Municipal Band

and DG Kicks big band will be putting on an Independence Day performance. We’ve included stories on each of these performances and also a rundown of who’s opening for each. red, white & blue he Fourth of July celebration at Wingfield Park will feature the Reno Municipal Band and DG Kicks, a local jazz band, as well as fireworks, food and drinks, a salute to veterans, and watermelon and apple pie eating contests.

DG Kicks will start off the musical performances for the night with Cindy Sabatini as their vocalist. The Reno Municipal Band conductor and program director A.G. “Mack” McGrannahan III is also a member of DG Kicks and said the band has a lot of fun playing together.

“We call it a kicks band, like we do it for kicks,” McGrannahan said.

The Reno Municipal Band will perform after a short intermission with a patriotic performance.

“Our concert is going to be much like seeing or hearing a service band, any of the service band concerts you would go to if they were in the area, like the United States Marine band,” McGrannahan said.

“We’re gonna play a lot of patriotic stuff and we’re going to have a lot of marches as well.”

Throughout the day there will be a Veterans Honor Wall available for visitors to write down veterans’ names, branch of service and dates served. And the Reno Municipal Band will also perform a salute to all the

armed forces near the end of the concert. Just before the fireworks begin, they will perform “Stars and Stripes Forever” as a salute to our nation, too.

In addition to the patriotic songs and salutes, the municipal band will also include some more contemporary songs including selections from Frozen and Les Miserables.

recent obsession that’s seemed to take hold of kids of all ages—and many adults, too.

“We have a new arrangement of that that is hot off the press,” McGrannahan said.

“I know all the kids will love that. I’ve got a granddaughter who’s five who sings the songs all the time. … I only hear it eight, 10 times a day.”

McGrannahan is looking forward to this performance more than some others because of the amount of people expected to attend in comparison to the municipal band’s other concerts.

“We’re going to have the chance to play in front of five, six thousand people. We’re really excited about that,” McGrannahan said. “It’ll be the biggest crowd that we’re playing in front of because it’s July Fourth and because it’s in the evening. All of the concerts that we do in Wingfield Amphitheater are always at 12 noon, and we do these concerts on Wednesday and Friday throughout July.”

McGrannahan said that both groups play for the sake and love of playing, and many of the members are long-time musicians in the area. A few even played with him in the Harrah’s house band—back when the casinos all had house bands.

The Reno Municipal Band has quite the history to it. It started back in 1882 and has had various names throughout the years but only eight directors in its 134 years. The director prior to McGrannahan—Glenn Little, the namesake of Wingfield Park’s amphitheater—conducted the band for about 35 years, and the director before him conducted for about 40 years. McGrannahan has been the director since 2010.

The youngest member in the municipal band is 21, and the oldest is 88. One member has even been in the band since 1942.

The members seem to enjoy playing their instruments.

“People start playing this band because they just love playing their instruments and some of them continue doing it for years,” McGrannahan said. “It’s great. So there’s quite an exchange of ideas from young and old. It’s just a great experience to be involved with it. I just love it.”

Los Pinguos will play at Wingfield Park on July 11 at 5:30 p.m.

esides letting audiences have a good time listening to their music, Los Pinguos love to travel. And they’ve done a lot of it.

“We’ve been traveling around the world for many years,” said lead singer and guitarist Adrian Buono. “We were in Europe, Bali, Indonesia, Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, South America. Always traveling, that’s what we like to do the most. That’s why we’re excited to keep on traveling and making the people happy with our music.”

They’re coming to Reno on July 11 for the Rollin’ On the River concert series in Wingfield Park from 5:30-9 p.m.

“We’re gonna do a big show for the people that want to dance and have fun,” Buono said. “They’re going to have a great time because our music is up, very happy. They’re going to have a good time for sure.”

Los Pinguos was formed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, back in 1999, but they moved a year later to Los Angeles and are still based there. The band also consists of vocalist, guitarist and songwriter José Agote, bassist Santiago Lee and percussionist Julio Ledezma. They also use six guest musicians periodically: Juan Manzur, Juan Manuel Leguizamón, Arturo Solar, John Roberts, Rocio Marron and Pablo Correa.

The group plays a mix of genres and mostly in Spanish. Buono said that about 95 percent of what they play is in Spanish.

“We do a mix of like kind of rumba flamenca, reggae, rock songs—basically Latin music with different rhythms,” Buono said. “We use Spanish guitars, bass, we do vocals in harmony, and it’s happy music. Normally when we play live, we play happy songs and happy music.”

They’ve been called a South American version of the Beatles by the Los Angeles Times. They often play some Beatles

covers in their sets in English partly because of this comparison. On their website they’ve self-described themselves as “a mixture of Manu Chao’s energy and electrical live performance, with the skill and rhythm of the Gipsy Kings.” They also do covers from the Gipsy Kings and the Bee Gees, according to Buono.

Los Pinguos are continuing doing what they love—playing their music and traveling—with their current touring schedule.

“We are recording and playing around always,” Buono said. “We never stop playing. We travel. We have a festival in Mexico. We are going to Utah, Washington, Oregon, Reno. We are playing around always and making new songs, getting it together for the new album also.”

Buono said the group is currently recording their newest album, called Regardel, which should be ready to go in about two months.

“I’m going to the studio because we are working on a new project,” Buono said.

“It’s tango reggae, and we’ll probably do a song or so in Reno. So we’re finishing this new album. It’s kind of a Bob Marley style with tango songs, Gardel songs.”

Carlos Gardel was an important tango singer-songwriter who also came from Buenos Aires.

Buono said that “Fumaza” is a favorite because it’s a very high energy tune that audiences love.

Buono also said that the group is excited to come to Reno. They played here once before for the Rollin’ On the River concert series back in 2009 and are thrilled to play the series and see the Reno crowds again.

“We want to go back [to Reno], of course,” Buono said. “We got a great response. It went great. We loved it. The people were very nice to us, dancing, having a good time. And we love to travel always. And hopefully a lot of people show up to the concert and everybody has a great time.”

“They rock, and they rock hard.”

Wilson is excited about his upcoming performance at Rollin’ On the River because he loves the audiences in Reno.

“The crowd in the Reno-Sparks area—this includes Carson City and a little bit of Tahoe, and we’ll throw Fernley and Fallon in there, too—the crowd is very outgoing,” Wilson said. “It’s not a shy crowd.

Everyone likes to get loud and have a good time. And you know, that’s what I’m looking forward to and this is what we experienced last time. … They get loud. They have a lot of fun.”

Wilson prefers crowds like these because he loves interacting with his audience when performing, and Reno does it well.

Wilson has performed in the Reno area a few times, including Rollin’ On the River a few years ago. He especially enjoys the Wingfield Park location for performing.

“Gosh, to be out under the stars with the Truckee River running right along there, and I remember last time we were playing there, the kids were wading in the Truckee and enjoying the water there, and people were just kinda stretched out,” Wilson said.

He said there’s a different atmosphere to outdoor concerts that he prefers to indoor concerts as both the performer and the audience member.

“We play a lot of casinos, so it is nice to be outside in the summertime,” Wilson said. “And I know it’s going to be a beautiful night in the Reno-Sparks area, and so being outside where people can bring a blanket or a chair and they can stretch out, maybe bring family, all ages. … I enjoy going inside the concerts, but it’s actually more relaxing and casual to be outside in a park on a beautiful summer night. To me, that’s the ideal situation to enjoy music with friends and family.”

Wilson is also excited to come to Reno because he grew up nearby in Fernley, so in addition to being a

great concert in general, he will get to visit with some family who live in the surrounding areas.

He’s also excited to play his European top 30 hit “Blues Magic” during the performance.

The concert will include mostly original songs but will also have some covers from the great blues musicians as a kind of tribute to the genre. “Blues Magic” is the third single on Wilson’s album Hands on the Wheel.

Wilson is a solo artist, but his band has been with him for a long time—since about the mid ’90s. It consists of Tumbleweed Mooney on the harmonica, Amrik Sandhu on the drums, Kirk Nelson on boogie woogie piano and Brian Beal on bass. For this particular concert, John Dees will be filling in for Beal.

They play blues rock with Wilson on guitar and vocals and Wilson explained their sound as having a great deal of “high octane guitar playing,” which he said is a draw for audiences.

“I would say a lot of people buy a ticket or go to see the guitar played like Stevie Ray Vaughan or Eric Clapton or Jeff Beck,” Wilson said. “As much as a lot of people do like the songs, they also go to see me play the guitar.”

Wilson is currently on tour with his band and album Hands On the Wheel. This album has 14 songs written by Wilson and is doing well in Europe—with two singles in the top 20 in addition to “Blues Magic” in the top 30—and the United States.

“Our U.S. hit is a song called ‘The Ballad of John Lee,’ which is in rotation on a lot of radio shows in the United States, but it’s a solid hit on B.B. King’s Bluesville on Sirius XM playing daily,” Wilson said.

“We’re getting a great response, and we’re thrilled to be playing on such a big XM radio show.”

Wilson added that his album is a great one for listening in the car while driving.

Wilson will play on July 18, 5:30-8 p.m. at Wingfield Park.

uring Artown, Reno will get a taste of old time rock and roll.

The System: The Bob Seger Tribute band will make their debut in Reno.

Coming from Michigan, Seger’s home state, The System will perform at Artown’s Rollin’ On The River event, and their goal is to lift and captivate the audience with their talent.

Throughout the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, Bob Seger’s lyrics and rock tunes earned him at least 13 platinum albums and classic songs such as “Turn the Page,” “Hollywood Nights,” and of course, “Old Time Rock and Roll.”

Lead vocalist George Nichols has pulled off all of Seger’s features and his voice is so similar, you might be mistaken that he could be Seger. The band has been performing for more than a decade, and Nichols hopes the band’s performance will bring a musical movement for those who attend—and little bit of the ’70s—all just for this one night in Artown.

“Personally, one of the reasons we did this is because we all liked the music,” Nichols said. “It seems like everywhere we went, there were people who liked at least one of Bob Seger’s songs. His music seems to connect with a lot of people.”

That’s the kind of vibrancy The System will bring to Artown this year. Although Reno is a city full of youth, Nichols said Seger’s lyrics about working for a living, taking that one motorcycle trip and relationships would connect the audience together.

Nichols has been performing at Midwestern clubs with his band for 13 years. He said he’s been listening to Seger before the world knew about his

music. They performed his late ’60s songs such as “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” and “Get Out Denver,” which he thought were just local hits. After Seger’s Beautiful Loser album, Nichols said it all just skyrocketed from there. He performed Seger’s songs in clubs and then in 2001, he formed the System through people he met at a music store he owned.

“The musicians I’m working with have pretty much been in place for a long time,” Nichols said. “I feel really lucky I’m playing with a talented band and this is the best band I could be working with.”

Nichols has also been a volunteer vocalist for other Bob Seger tribute bands when they were in need for a singer. Not only does Nichols have similar features, but he represents Seger’s energy and talent with instruments.

“People aren’t going to see the guitar player for Bob Seger, they’re coming to see Bob Seger as accurately as possible,” Nichols said. “That’s what we concentrated on—to be accurate and present the band with a lot of energy.”

Nichols also said he looks forward to meeting the Reno community and hopes he and the band will get to tour Reno and check out local restaurants.

Nichols said it’s all about the music and without Seger’s work, they wouldn’t have much to do.

“There aren’t quite that many shows out there, and we don’t work quite that much but the opportunity to get out there in Reno, a high profile city— it’s great to visit someplace we’ve never been to and show them what we’re all about,” Nichols said.

etting the party started and the mood set for the remainder of the night is the job of the openers for any concert. Rollin’ On the River has some great openers to start the show. The first night of Rollin’ On the River is a little different this year because it falls on Independence Day, but here are the openers for the rest of the nights.

July 11: The NovelisTs The Novelists perform lyrical rock and are based in Reno. They formed back in July of 2011 and have toured extensively since then. The band consists of vocalist, guitarist and mandolinist Joel Ackerson, vocalist and pianist Eric Andersen and vocalist and bassist Zack Teran. Their first album was titled Backstory, and they released Book 1 back in April of this year. They have plans to release another fulllength album later this year, too.

The Novelists have played throughout the U.S. and have upcoming tour dates throughout the region, which can be found on their website at thenovelists.com. They will play at Wingfield Park on July 11, 5:30 p.m.

July 18: GuiTar Woody aNd The Boilers Guitar Woody and the Boilers are veterans to Rollin’ On the River. They opened for Janiva Magness during last year’s series. This group plays bluesbased R&B and funk music and have been playing in Reno for more than 20 years. Guitar Woody—or Woody Soules—started the band after taking a break from music for about four or five years in Reno. He befriended some local musicians and soon enough Guitar Woody and the Boilers became a reality.

July 25: FirsT Take FeaTuriNG rick MeTz First Take featuring Rick Metz performs vocal jazz from popular and important American popular songs of the 20th century.

The members of the band vary from performance to performance, which is why Metz calls the group First Take. No matter who plays with him, they have to get the song correct on the “first take.” It was also the name of his college jazz group. Metz plays the saxophone most frequently, but also plays a variety of instruments in different performances. The band plays selections from artists including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Mel Torme, Harry Connick, Jr. and Duke Ellington. Metz will stick around after this performance to play saxophone with the headlining band, The System, too.

hristine Fey is the current resource development and cultural affairs manager for the City of Reno, but she’s been around Artown since the very beginning.

My job entails working with anything to do with the arts and culture that the City’s involved in. So that would be public art programs and projects and installations, our grantees, being the staff liaison to Artown for instance, Pioneer Center, that sort of thing.

What do you do as staff liaison to Artown?

I direct their contract and manage their contractual obligations. We have other staff that works with them in the park, although I’m there most nights.

Why does the City work with Artown?

Well, the Arts and Culture commission started Artown back in 1995 with the first festival, of course, being ’96. So they did the first several years and then spun

it off as a 501(c)3 in 1999. So it’s really our baby. We’re sort of the grandparent of Artown, so to speak, and I was the staff member at that time. I was the boots-on-the-ground doing the work in the beginning with a contract person we had hired to help run the festival. And then as it grew and grew and became more prominent and it became its own 501(c)3, they established a board and so I continued to be the staff liaison to their board. I served in that capacity for about 12 or 13 years. It was a long time—over a decade, certainly. Then as they matured, our involvement didn’t have to be quite as much hands-on, so now we have a city councilmember who serves as a city liaison to their board and then I do sort of the nuts and bolts work of it.

And why is this important to the City of Reno?

It’s very important to the City of Reno because of several reasons. One, because

when we first started it, our goal was to bring our citizens back downtown because they had kind of disinvested themselves in the downtown back in ’95.

Anyone who was here at that time will remember that. And so our goal was to showcase the arts and invite people back to the living room of our community, which is our river corridor and Wingfield Park. We had a nice amphitheater and the only thing happening in there at that time were the municipal band concerts, which were wonderful, but we knew it could be much, much more. And so the City also receives a great deal of international and national visibility for Reno from Artown because there’s so many people that come here for it, there’s so much press coverage all over the place. And so anytime we can show Reno in the vibrant, positive light—and featuring the artists and art of Reno is certainly one way to do that—it shows us as a really mature, interesting place,

an interesting city people want to go to and attend something.

How about personally?

Why do you like Artown?

Well, again, I was there at the beginning, and, to me, Artown serves a very important place in my mind in this community. It does showcase the arts. It brings together so many different arts organizations, all of whom put on their own shows. Sometimes people don’t realize how Artown actually works. Artown is really much more of a marketing arm for the arts, for what happens during the festival.

They certainly produce a number of events, and they do it beautifully, but there’s so many organizations that also produce events and at their own cost. The City of Reno gives grants to those groups that are a part of Artown, not every single one certainly, but many, many of them. And we consider that to be important because, for me, anytime that we can give people a reason to come down to their own living room and we can give them an excuse to investigate and discover some absolutely fabulous entity or group or genre of art that they’ve never experienced. They may become an opera fan, for instance, if they get to see an opera in the park, little tidbits of an opera because they would do the opera in blue jeans. It’s more low key. If they get a chance to see a painter out there, they may decide to not buy posters, but buy paintings. And if they get chance to see ballet, they may be surprised and say, “Wow, I thought ballet was kind of something different and this is really fun, and I’m going to go to the ballet.” I’ve always seen Artown as a way for local arts organizations to really present themselves that are not currently their audience in a really safe, condensed environment where there’s a lot of hype and it makes it really hip to go do it.

So, for me, Artown serves a really important role in continuing to showcase the arts and the amazing art offerings that are here as well as bringing in artists who then stimulate our local artists and our local organizations. It’s really a win-win.

Since you’ve been with Artown since the beginning, how has it evolved?

The first year of course was very tenuous, and people weren’t quite sure what to expect and we were lucky to manage to do one thing or two things or three things a day. And it was only three weeks long. As it has progressed, people have expected—it’s almost like a Good Housekeeping seal of approval—people have come to expect really high caliber, high quality, innovative, interesting things to happen during Artown. But that evolved over time. So at the beginning, we kinda took all comers, and later, they kinda became more discerning in what really constituted art. They don’t jury it based on whether they think it’s good or bad. They jury it based on, Is this

really art? Because sometimes there’s things that want to come in that really aren’t art.

They’re something else, and there are other places for them to be. But Artown really does strive to make sure that they are continuing to hit a high caliber in art and so the ones that maybe weren’t as high a caliber in the past have kinda dropped away because it’s such a big field now and there’s so much happening.

It’s really sort of a Darwinian thing. The best are rising to the top, and they’re the ones that

in July.” And now instead they say, “Oh, I’ve rearranged my vacation schedule. I never miss July. I don’t leave Reno in July.” That is a change of mindset.

The goal was to bring people downtown and stimulate the downtown area. How do you think that has worked?

But several hundred thousand people are coming downtown over the course of 31 days every night and are going to other events and are eating in restaurants—I think the proof is in the pudding. Look at all the restaurants and things. I think it’s had a tremendous impact. And it’s not just Artown, it’s arts and culture in general. It’s the Pioneer Center. It’s Brüka Theater. It’s Good Luck Macbeth. It’s the Reno Philharmonic, and the Chamber Orchestra, and the two ballet companies. It’s the Museum of Art. It’s such a combined effort. Artown is one of the arts and culture groups, but Artown shines such a spotlight for a condensed period of time that it really has a lot of impact.

Are you specifically excited for any particular events this year?

Opening And clOSing nigHTS Are gOing TO be AmAzing. i WOuldn’T miSS THOSe. are continuing to be able to perpetuate and go. At the beginning, it was purely a local thing. Now, I’ll be in the park and see the same people year after year who will wave and say hi because they recognize me from years ago and as well as all the Artown staff.

It’s like coming to meet relatives. And then we find out that they vacation in Graeagle every summer and they pick their vacation for July, and there’s certain nights that they make sure that they drive down here, without fail, for those events. Wednesday nights especially.

There’s this couple that I don’t think they’ve missed a year in 15 years. I mean, they’re just always there front and center. And when you start hearing about locals saying back in the day, “Oh well, I usually go on vacation

The Reno Arts and Culture Commission … they were hoping to help revitalize downtown.

Now, I’m not gonna suggest that that’s the only thing that did it. It’s sort of like a threelegged milk stool. You had redevelopment efforts, you had arts and culture which brought people downtown, and then you had the casinos and business owners that really were ratcheting up what they were doing. But when you look at what’s happening in that corridor and you see the number of restaurants that have opened and you see little business and you know that hundreds of thousands of people come down—approximately 300,000 people come down—to various Artown events, not literally all downtown. a special supplement to reno news & review

Opening and closing nights are going to be amazing. I wouldn’t miss those. Wednesday nights, I always love the World Music Series.

It’s just always fabulous. The dance series, they just get better and better every year. And the family series, I mean, I don’t have any young kids anymore, but I like to go to the family series because it’s always innovative and fun, and you get home at a decent hour, which is nice. But they’re adding a new series at Bartley [Ranch Regional Park]—they already have several series at Bartley—but they’re gonna have some really big headliners, like Don McLean and Judy Collins. There are several that are going to be amazing down there. I think that that’s a nice addition—having a few gated events as well as the free events because that shows people that there’s a lot that’s for free but you can also go to some that have an expense and they aren’t necessarily in a show room or casino, you get to be out in the beautiful weather. So I’m looking forward to a lot of things, actually. And then there’s the visual arts day. And the Cortalina Art Auction. … But I’ll be taking [my Artown book] home this weekend with a highlighter and I go through and I highlight everything that I plan to do. And they do their own work now, I really just manage the City side of it. But I do, we do get presentations. The Arts and Culture Commission is one of the sponsors of opening and closing night, so we saw the tapes and the videos and listened to the music that’s going to be opening and closing night. It’s going to be just phenomenal. And I’m very excited about that. I go through and highlight what I want to see, but I will be at something everyday and most days I’ll do two, three or four things because there’s that much to do. … And the nice thing is that our community is compact enough that you can do that. So you kind of get your fill for a little while.

Sounds like one busy month for you.

It’s a very busy month, but I love it.

espite local officials’ frequent cries that “Reno is Artown,” tourists might dispute this based on the appearance of its downtown corridor. But one event in the 2014 Artown festival, the Circus Circus 24-hour Mural Marathon, is intended to help address this problem.

The idea stemmed from a conversation between art professor Howard Rosenberg of the University of Nevada, Reno and Richard Bartholet, president of the Regional Alliance for Downtown and director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at UNR. “We met one morning at the corner where City Hall sits and took a walk from there up Virginia Street to UNR,” Bartholet says. “At Circus Circus, we commented on how much more attractive the new parking garage structure was than the façade of the actual casino. And then Howard said, ‘We could paint something on it.’”

That spark of an idea inspired Bartholet to reach out to Circus Circus management, who took the idea and ran with it, bringing in casino marketing director Debbi Engebritson, who set up a series of meetings with local artists, architects, festival organizers and prominent local citizens to solicit input on how to get the casino’s seven, 19-by-14-foot panels fronting Virginia Street painted. Chad Sweet, public relations and gallery director

for Sierra Arts, and local artist Pan Pantoja suggested the winning idea: a competition.

Beginning on July 13 at 10 a.m., seven artists will each begin painting on one of the panels. Artists will each receive a stipend of $750 for materials, much of it spray paint, and will be responsible for their own equipment and labor. The work will be completed—before a panel of judges and any local spectators who pop by—over a 24-hour period, with live tweeting taking place throughout the marathon. When time is called at 10 a.m. on July 14th, the five judges will go to work. Cash prizes will be awarded for the first ($2,000), second ($1,000) and third place ($500) winners.

Interested artists should submit an application and work samples to Engebritson before June 27. The seven artists, and two alternates, will be selected July 3, with a minimum of three spots reserved for locals.

“I love putting such a short tap on it,” says Chad Sweet. “It gives it a sense of urgency. They’ll have a little prep time, but nothing makes artists work harder than seeing it get dark out and realizing, ‘We have to turn on the flood lights, and we only have a few hours until morning!’”

The panels will remain up for only one year. The competition is meant to be an annual event, with the previous year’s work being covered and repainted.

The public is invited to drop in anytime during the 24-hour competition and cheer on (or heckle) the artists.

Artist who speciAlizes in portrAits of cAts And wine group of colorful cats, traveling around the world getting drunk from red wine all started out with a woman. Well, two women to be exact.

Michele DiFonzo, a spontaneous palette painter of Reno, is known for landscape portraits. She gave her creativity a bit of a twist one day and ended up painting a woman drinking a glass of wine, and called it “Cheers.”

This portrait then inspired her to paint people’s faces drinking wine until she decided she wanted to try this theme with animals.

“I just wanted to do a bunch of cats,” DiFonzo said.

That’s how the Wine-ing Cats were born. These furry and vivid cats have partied it up from Paris, to San Francisco and to Reno.

“I called them the Wine-ing Cats because they’re having wine. But they’re not whining—they’re wine-ing.”

DiFonzo, 62, is one of the featured artists for this year’s Artown. These cats put the internet cats to shame. The sceneries are brought to life with vibrant colors and each cat has a distinctive personality. But DiFonzo hopes her paintings will bring a lighthearted energy for those who see them.

“It’s rewarding to have somebody look at your art and laugh and smile,” she said. “I like to see people delighted with it. It makes me feel good and it lifts them up. I think there’s so much dark stuff going on in the world and this is humorous and fun. It hits their funny bone—and that’s very satisfying to me.”

This is DiFonzo’s first time participating in Artown, and her Wineing Cats paintings will be featured throughout the month of July. Her distinct style can be easily spotted in her paintings and also in her attire.

Her razored black hair presents a rocker vibe, which was accentuated by her all-black outfit—except for the leopard print shirt underneath her shawl—at the interview. Her eye shadow blended in nicely to match the brown and yellow colored pattern on her shirt.

DiFonzo also paints landscapes and collages. A few of her paintings were featured in Renown and local restaurants such as Great Full Gardens. She also painted a portrait of Sparks Mayor Geno Martini. Local shops such as Paper Moon, Ryrie’s and Home 23 sell blank cards with Wine-ing Cats on the cover.

DiFonzo is featured in this year’s Artown because her artwork is whimsical, but she also goes down different avenues with her skills. She invents as she goes.

“I don’t like to paint in a way where it looks like I knew exactly what I was

doing,” she said. “I like the struggle behind the painting. It’s more passionate.”

DiFonzo was born in San Francisco and raised in Los Angeles. She’s enjoyed painting and art since she was a child.

“I remember in elementary school, I would always get so excited when the teacher would hand out colored paper,” DiFonzo said. She never understood why no one else got as excited as she did.

She’s been living in Reno for about 37 years. Before going to a full-time painting career, she worked as a waitress at The Atlantis and has been taking care of her beloved father after her mother passed away last August. She also has a daughter living in Seattle who does mural paintings.

DiFonzo also has a cat of her own named Sophie. She’s a furry fawncolored cat who seems to be filled with so much peppiness. The picture DiFonzo showed me was a worthy selfie of Sophie just comfortably curled up on top of her head.

“I come out of the shower and the first thing she does is jump on top of my head,” she said.

The artist has a love for wine tasting, especially when it comes to Chardonnay.

But in her paintings, all the cats are drinking either Pinot Noir or a Zinfandel.

DiFonzo is now considering whether she’ll have the cats drink several different wines in the future.

“I like the red because it’s a lot more noticeable,” she said. “Most people seem to be drinking red wine a lot.”

The Wine-ing Cats project is going beyond Artown. Her latest portrait has cats drinking wine in Hawaii. DiFonzo said this is her 11th Wine-ing Cats painting, and she is planning to paint another one to publish a calendar.

DiFonzo said she’s been thinking about where the next destination could be for the cats. So far, she’s come up with London, Las Vegas and New York.

“I should probably do one in Catalina,” DiFonzo said. “That way, it would make sense because the cats are drinking wine in Cat-alina.”

Her future projects also include cats drinking during holidays and cats drinking through history. Difonzo brings her humorous side to Artown with the Wine-ing Cats, which definitely brings a shine of light into somebody’s day.

“Sometimes, I look at my work at night and I’ll look at some of the cats,” DiFonzo said. “I’ll start laughing to myself.”

You can meet Michele DiFonzo and see her Wine-ing Cats work from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Dreamer’s Café and Deli on July 12 and at the Art Paws event on July 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the McKinley Arts and Culture Center.

Literary crawL for aLL ages

ith literary pub crawls putting pages on informal stages from New York to San Francisco, it was only a matter of time before Reno got in on the act.

After all, “this is clearly a town that loves its crawls,” says Karen Wikander, program coordinator with Nevada Humanities, which is putting on a lit crawl of its own on July 19 as part of the 2014 Artown festival.

After last year’s Artown literary scavenger hunt, which took participants several weeks to complete, Wikander and local author Mark Maynard set out to create a shorter, more social literary event that would showcase local authors and local venues.

“Mark and I, as children of the ’80s, both loved the Choose Your Own Adventure books, so we decided to follow that method,” Wikander says.

The event kicks off at Sundance Books and Music at 5 p.m. for the “prologue,” where crawlers will receive a map of venues and the schedule of live readings from up to 30 local authors, who will be reading aloud from their books. From there, crawlers choose their own path— which genre and author do they want to hear from next? Fiction, nonfiction, young adult (YA) fiction and poetry will all be represented.

“We’ll have different genres at each venue,” Wikander says. “If you want to just listen to poetry all night, you can do that at a variety of venues, or if you just want to stay at Sundance the whole time, you can.

But we hope people really move around.”

Aside from Sundance, venues include Liberty Fine Arts Gallery, the Great Basin Community Food Co-op, Tavern 1864, Reno Public House and Craft, which will host the “epilogue” at around 9 p.m.

Though the word “crawl” implies that booze will accompany books throughout the evening, the inclusion

of YA authors implies that this is not a 21-and-over event; several of the venues are family-friendly.

In one of the two Liberty Fine Arts spaces dedicated to the event, local improv troupe The Utility Players will lead a literary trivia game throughout the night. And for crawlers hoping to immerse themselves in the literary world, there will be a costume contest.

Dress as your favorite author or literary character. Winners will be announced during the Craft epilogue.

As of this writing, among the 25 Northern Nevada authors confirmed to read and sign books (which will be on sale at Sundance) during crawl are Christopher Coake, Patty Cafferata, Tracy Clark, Alicia Barber, Gailmarie Pahmeier, Scott Neuffer, Jared Stanley and, of course, Mark Maynard.

“We just want to see what kind of response we get,” Wikander says. “If it really takes off, we hope to expand it to more venues and more hours next year.”

ate High works for Transforming Youth Recovery, typically writing grants and doing other work for the nonprofit in Reno, but this summer she stumbled into a new project called Doors to Recovery.

I met with High at a storage unit where she said they were keeping the doors for the project. As she opened it up, I saw gorgeously painted and decorated doors propped up throughout the unit. She described it as “her own little gallery,” and her passion for this project and organization was very clear as she jumped around from door to door explaining what each artist had done with them.

Doors to Recovery is an art project where local artists and others have taken old doors from Lear Theater and made them into works of art depicting what recovery from addiction is to them. Some

of the artists include Erik Holland, Bryce Chisholm and Carol Foldvary Anderson.

“These are all antique doors from a historic building, which is part of Reno history, and they’ve been transformed into these wonderful, beautiful things,” High said. “And to me, that tells the story of an addict who has the disease, who has no control over their own ability to use or not use, and they’re taken and given some love and nurturing and they blossom into this beautiful person, which they always were, but they’re not able to do that while they’re in this disease. That’s what has happened with these doors, and every single door is different and every single door has become this beautiful thing that tells a story.”

The doors were donated by Artown, who owns Lear Theater, as part of a trade for the pews that are now in the theater.

Stacie Mathewson, founder of TYR, had the pews stored in the same storage unit prior to the trade.

The doors will be displayed for the duration of Artown in nine locations throughout town, which can be found on their website. They will later be auctioned off at the Nevada Museum of Art on Aug. 9. The proceeds will go to TYR, Artown, Nevada Recovery and Prevention Community (N-RAP) and Tour de Nez. Tour de Nez’s Bubba Melcher will host a Tour de Doors—a bike tour of the doors—on July 19 to see as many doors as possible.

High said the goal of this project is to spread the word about three things pertaining to addiction and recovery.

“This is a disease, it’s not a moral failing,” High said. “It’s really not a moral failing. It’s not a choice. The only choice you get is the first drink or the first time you use, and after that your disease kicks in and takes over. And the second thing is about the work that Transforming Youth Recovery is doing. And the third reason is to raise money for local nonprofits.”

TYR does work throughout the country mostly with youth recovery but also with recovery in general. One of the projects is to give seed funding of $10,000 to 100 sober communities in educational settings around the country, like N-RAP. TYR believes it’s important to work with addiction and recovery for youth in educational settings because it’s the best place to get a hold of young people and help them with this disease.
