Reno River Festival

The 11th annual festival brings some of world’s top kayakers to downtown Reno for a weekend of whitewater sports, music, food and libations. The event begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, May 10-11, at Truckee River Whitewater Park and Wingfield Park, located between First Street and Arlington Avenue. Activities and attractions include yoga in the park and kayaking and canoeing clinics on both days of the event, as well as live music by performed by various bands. Saturday’s musical lineup features Cole Thomason, The Kanes, Wayland and Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit and closes with headlining act Old Dominion at 5:30 p.m. The freestyle finals take place at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the awards ceremony at 7 p.m. Sunday’s highlights include the SUP Competition at 10 a.m. and the SUP, Slalom and Boatercross Awards Ceremony at 6 p.m. Sunday’s musical performers are Willie Tea Taylor, Jelly Bread, Mark Sexton Band and headliners Keyser Soze, who will hit the stage at 4 p.m. Admission is free to the festival. Tempest

Carson Valley Arts Council presents a concert by the Celtic rock band. The group delivers a globally renowned hybrid of high-energy folk rock fusing Irish reels, Scottish ballads, Norwegian influences and other world music elements. Enviro FilmFest

The Great Basin NOKXL presents this film festival to bring awareness to the issues of the Keystone XL Pipeline, indigenous peoples’ struggles and environmental problems worldwide. The festival takes place Friday and Saturday, May 9-10, featuring showings of the films American Outrage, Standing on Sacred Ground, Profit and Loss and Years of Living Dangerously (first episode). Both nights begin at 5:30pm with a social, followed by early bird showings at 7:30 p.m. at The Holland Project, 140 Vesta St. Admission is a $5 donation. National Train Day The Nevada State Railroad Museum will operate and offer rides aboard Virginia & Truckee Railway’s McKeen motor car No. 22 to commemorate National Train Day on Saturday, May. 10. The car entered service for the V&T on May 9, 1910, and was retired in 1945. No. 22 is the only restored and operable McKeen motor car in the world. In 2012, it was granted National Historic Landmark status. The McKeen motor car will operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Train fares are $8 for people age 12 and older, $4 for museum members and children ages 4-11, and free for children age 3 or younger. Museum admission is $6 for adults and free for museum members and children age 17 or younger accompanied by an adult. The Nevada State Railroad Museum is at 2180 S. Carson St., Carson City. Biggest Little Birthday Party Learn Reno’s history and participate in a reenactment of the original auction of lots that began the town in 1868. Other activities and attractions include gold panning, photo booths and a display of antique Reno police cars fire trucks, as well as performances by magician Justin Rivera, the Nevada Cadet Band and Young Chautauqua actors. Birthday cake will also be served. The free party takes place from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at the Virginia Street Bridge in downtown Reno. Parks: Past/Present Perspectives

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation will recreate an iconic photograph of 120 Renoites posing for the dedication of the California Building in Idlewild Park. In celebration of both Reno’s 146th birthday and the sesquicentennial anniversary of Nevada’s statehood, the first 120 participants of this event will receive a commemorative deck of Nevada heritage playing cards. Following the photo shoot, visitors are invited to view Parks: Past/Present Perspectives, a fine art exhibit consisting of 18 historical photographs of Truckee Meadows parks culled from the University of Nevada, Reno’s Special Collection.
