Dirty secrets

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I’m watching the KNPB/ RGJ mayoral debate. Only two or three of these people who feel they’re qualified to lead the city seemed to have at least considered what the issues are and how they might solve them. Firefighters? Homeless?

Marijuana dispensaries? Health benefits for new employees?

What the hell is going on with these people? Anjeanette Damon seemed to be the only one who was prepared to discuss simple questions, and she was just asking them. Why couldn’t we at least have some candidates speak English? And what was with those people who had to look into the audience to see whether to raise their hands on yes or no questions.

The biggest issues of the day, and it appears they have never had conversations on these topics before.

This is inane. It’s obvious that they see Hillary Schieve as the person to beat, attacking her for decisions past City Councils have made, but if we were to judge her on the intelligence of her responses, instead of the beauty of her campaign signs, I’m not sure that would be the case. In fact, it seemed funny that the two themes I heard most were “we need change” and “I’m so plugged in.” Sometimes, it was the same person who was making both claims.

I’ve interacted with about a third of the candidates at some point and on some level. We don’t really play the corporateplayer game around here, so if we’re interacting, it’s one on one, and it’s not about being a member of some club I wouldn’t join. Some of these candidates I’ve even considered friends or allies at one time or another.

Can I point out something obvious? Every time I hear one of these people tell me their business bona fides qualify them to be mayor, I want to gag.

Every single problem this city has—and I am not exaggerating—goes back to an overbearing business influence on our city government. Government is not business, and decisions that are good for business have been horrible for our city’s citizens.

Re “The organic food lie” (Feature story, Feb. 13): In my opinion, it is necessary to genetically modify many of the fruits and vegetables we eat today. Along with the debate on the growing population and the need for more food and larger portions, much of the food you believe to be organic has already been modified. Have you ever gone to your local organic market or a Whole Foods and thought the corn you were serving with dinner was a healthy, organic portion for your family? Healthy: yes, non-modified organic: no. Corn wouldn’t exist today without the genetic modification of maize. A large portion of crops would die without stress modifications, or modifications made for security against pests. These modifications aren’t designed to harm us, they’re designed to aide the prosperity of the crops and the prosperity of our ever-growing population.

(Upfront, May 1): Ah, but what shall we believe? In my personal opinion, Harry Reid has the hand of the press, and I find it hard to believe the propaganda that is fed to us by the Democratic supporting press.

Women and children first Re “The battle of Bunkerville” (Let Freedom Ring, April 24): My dad used to say, “You can tell a lot about a guy by the company he keeps, and who he looks up to.” You folks at the RN&R hired Brendan Trainor, a man who apparently perceives the severely racist welfare rancher Cliven Bundy to be a true American hero.

My daddy would definitely tell us that says a lot about you. As for Bundy’s refusal to pay the ridiculously low grazing fee of $1.35 per month

per cow/calf pair, while becoming a millionaire in the process, is that what Trainor views as a model citizen?

Yep, that’s right, folks, Bundy’s pals are willing to line their womenfolk up in the front of the shooting gallery against the U.S. government as human shields over a measley $8.10 per animal annual fee that most ranchers pay. That grazing fee has nothing to do with the tortoise. Is that what Trainor considers a true American value? They all seem like a bunch of misogynistic playground bully cowards to me. And Trainor looks up to these people?

Trainor might want to read up on how George Washingon squashed the Bundys of his day in the so-called “Whiskey Rebellion.” These chumps, who had the audacity to tar and feather federal tax collectors over a few gallons of whiskey, were rounded up swiftly by the real, government supervised U.S. militia, which is a very different thing than the violent, government hating anarchist fools that Trainor and his ilk call “militia” these days. At least one of these Whiskey rebels was hanged by the neck until dead, at the order of our first president.

But here’s the real rub: If any one of you had the extremely modest investigative skill set necessary to fact check Brendan’s perpetration of the thoroughly debunked but oft repeated myth that Harry and Rory Reid are in cahoots with a shadowy Chinese solar electric company who intend to build a plant on the very public land Bundy has been mooching off of, you’d have found that there is no such deal. The Chinese company gave up on trying to build any solar plant in southern Nevada a couple of years ago. Look it up on Snopes. It’s a blatant falsehood.

But either the modest eighth grade skill set of fact checking apparently eludes you, which would indicate serious journalistic incompetence, or Trainor knows full well that the wild claims about the “spooky, shadowy Chinese solar electric company” and the Reids are blatantly incorrect and he is willfully perpetrating a lie, which you allowed him to publish. So, which is it? Are you incompetent, or are you willful liars, abetting the felonious, treasonous cause of a racist, wealthy, bloodthirsty, anarchist welfare rancher?

Because those are the only two options

Trainor wrote, “News reports surfaced that the real reason for wanting to force Southern Nevada’s last cattle rancher off the land his family has worked for a century was not grazing fees or tortoises but a sweetheart deal involving Reid’s son Rory and Chinese solar energy developers who covet Bundy’s land.” We included links to some of the news stories that surfaced. He made no claim that the Fox News story was true, and deciding what information to include in an argument is part of rhetoric, which Trainor as a columnist, a writer of opinion, is entitled to do. When the RN&R starts censoring mainstream opinion because we don’t like the opinion, its rhetorical underpinnings or its citations, we become that thing we hate. The marketplace of ideas requires the circulation of ideas we don’t agree with, if only to give others a chance to debunk them.

Gee, our old Lasalle ran great Re “Sparks cartoonist mourns Archie” (Upfront, April 24): Did Brian Crane understand that Archie’s death is taking place in a comic book that tells serious stories of Archie’s future as an adult? Or that the series has already been canceled, and this is happening in the final issue? It’s more likely that the intent is to bring the story to a definite conclusion than that they’re trying to “prop up” a series that’s already been canceled. The main Archie Comics titles will still go on telling “funny” stories of the teenaged Riverdale gang.

denied to Bundy? None. Not a single one. He has had all his due process, over 20 years worth, at great expense to taxpayers. He lost in court, more than once, and never complied with subsequent orders. If his case had a shred of merit, it might have made its way to the Supreme Court, where Scalia could have used it to redefine public property. … Have the protesters been denied constitutional rights?

Hardly. No one was denied his First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceable assembly. Some of that free speech included criminal threats and sedition. No one stopped their assembly, which obstructed and was anything but peaceful. Civil disobedience does not involve guns. Bringing guns to a protest is a threat of violence.

When you bring guns it’s called “insurrection,” which is mentioned in the Constitution. If the guns at Bunkerville had any connection to the Second Amendment, they would have been in the hands of our state militia, under officers appointed by the governor, ready to help the president “to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions.”

Here are some constitutional principles which actually were violated. First, the federal government is explicitly empowered to manage US Territory, per Article IV, Section 3. That was thwarted. Second, there is no provision for private citizens to form armed gangs to resist federal court orders.

Third, and most importantly, the whole point of the Constitution is to guarantee each state the right to a representative form of government, and freedom from domestic violence or invasion.

That’s Article IV, Section 4. No one elected these gun nuts to represent us.

They have no right to invade our state.

And where’s our protection from their domestic violence? Sandoval, Heller and Fiore have all violated their oaths by supporting them, arguably committing treason. I heard the comparison to Rosa Parks. If Rosa Parks had refused to pay bus fair for 20 years, refused to obey a court order to stay off the bus, then shown up with an assault rifle to claim the bus belonged to her—well, maybe.

No. Freedom of speech. Telling us what we can and cannot say, can and cannot do. That’s why we live in America.

We’ve been watching the primary election proceedings, in particular the mayor’s race, with a great deal of amusement. Most particularly, we’ve been watching the goings-on as the local mainstream media portion out, for their own benefits, visibility to the candidates.

We’d like to ask one tangential question from the outset. How can KNPB run candidate debates that don’t include all the candidates? Aren’t they a taxexempt non-profit? Under the Internal Revenue Code, all 501(c)3s are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office.

Even if their partner, the Reno Gazette-Journal, is the one making the calls, allowing some participants but not others to participate in a debate is still an obvious intervention.

Along other lines, has anyone noticed that the Gazette-Journal’s methods for choosing who will be on their debates favor in all ways the incumbents and the candidates with money?

For example, Hillary Schieve has been on the Reno City Council since Nov. 14, 2012. She was well-funded even in her first run at the office. A couple of years in that den of iniquity and her coffers have got to be bursting. So if the choice for who gets to be in the debate is made by how much money a candidate has raised (and visibility is helped along by money), then she’s going to be on top.

How about that peculiar social media requirement?

Again, as an incumbent, she gets the benefit. People in Reno are concerned about what’s going on with their

city government, so they go to Facebook or to Twitter to get the news. It doesn’t show a particular liking of a person. In fact, sometimes it shows the opposite. What it does do is create an outsized effect in favor of incumbents. And people with money? All they have to do is hire a PR firm to buy social media advertising or to use their own social media network to encourage people to like their candidates’ posts. We’ll see on May 20 who’s got the money, but we haven’t found anyone betting against us on the notion those who start with money will already be in the lead.

Finally, the third criteria to participate in the Gazette-Journal/KNPB debates is mail-in ballots, a self selected and therefore invalid polling sample. The mail-in ballots are, of course, included in the print editions. It’s a transparent device to cut out the poorer candidates. The RG-J could easily have a free online form for determining voter interest, but they’d once again prefer to kowtow to the people in town with money. A Sunday paper, the most read paper of the week, costs $3. So candidates and voters have to pay three bucks to vote? They’ll probably just buy their stacks of papers on Monday. How democratic. Of course, many of the candidates who made the most sensible statements during previous forums will be frozen out of the process.

We didn’t fall off the medical marijuana truck yesterday. We know this is how elections are run in Reno. But there’s a reason most people don’t participate in this part of the election process. It’s because we’ve learned over decades that the game is rigged, and we’d be fools to waste our time pretending it’s otherwise. Ω

Be the Alliance that you wish to see “You’re loud, proud and progressive!” With those words Congressman Steven Horsford pumped up the Las Vegas crowd at the 20th Anniversary Gala celebrating the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada (PLAN).

Last month’s event was sold out and attracted a diverse group by unlike the audience at any other Sheila Leslie fundraiser in Nevada. Almost half were Latino, black or Asian, and it seemed at least that many were under 30. As Congresswoman Dina Titus proclaimed: “This is Nevada.

This is America.”

Nevada has evolved in many ways over the past 20 years. While the tea party still has influence and the cowboy freeloader continues to embarrass us on a national stage, the overall trend politically has been towards progress. Consider the Republican Party’s removal of anti-choice and anti-gay planks from the platform at their recent convention. I hardly recognize the Nevada I migrated to in 1977.

It’s a given that the population explosion changed everything. Urban Las Vegans are now flexing their

political muscle, demanding that resources be shared more equitably through population-based formulas that recognize their greater needs.

They rightly question why their tax dollars subsidize rural jobs in the mining industry.

But population growth alone doesn’t account for the leftward political trend that has brought more attention to social, racial, environmental and economic justice issues. Those victories can be linked directly to the work of PLAN, a non-profit coalition organized around a kitchen table in Washoe Valley, at the home of legendary activist and philanthropist, Maya Miller.

Bob Fulkerson and Jan Gilbert, the co-founders of PLAN, persevered in the early years, bringing together diverse groups and organizations to show them where their interests overlapped and convince them more could be accomplished by working together than struggling alone. Labor unions, gay and lesbian groups, human services agencies, Native American Tribes and others

were wary at first but learned to work through their conflicts and stand together when it mattered.

At the 20th Planiversary Gala, the nation’s most powerful politician, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, sat quietly on stage until it was his turn to talk. He spoke at length, name-checking young activists like Dreamer Astrid Silva, just back from Washington, D.C., where she received the American Immigration Council’s Immigrant Youth Achievement Award.

Progressive politicians, Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchiliani and Sen. David Parks, were celebrated for their groundbreaking work with PLAN on the minimum wage and ex-felon voting rights, repealing sodomy laws and creating domestic partnerships, and hopefully soon, achieving marriage equality.

But it was the young people who inspired hope that progressive victories will continue. They organized and energized the event, while seamlessly posting on social media. When Reid’s “domestic terrorists” comments incited the Twitter trolls on the PLAN feed,

they complained good naturedly, but with a seasoned activist’s understanding that there’s always some things you can’t control.

No one wanted to leave at the conclusion of the speeches, despite the lack of alcohol and live music, or the promise of more fun to be had elsewhere. A week later, PLAN was still receiving emails of congratulations from those unable to attend. One former staffer, now in his late-20s, wrote about his experience working at PLAN: “I was just a kid searching to find his way. I found my voice in the opportunities that you provided me. I don’t know if you remember but the first time we met was at the tent city. I testified and found my voice and ability to make change. … I was supposed to just be another statistic but you helped me on my journey to become the man I am today.”

Perhaps PLAN’s most important legacy is this young man and others, full of confidence that their involvement and dedication to an issue can indeed change the world, or at least change Nevada. Ω

People in glass houses “Perhaps I’ve sinned,” said an embattled Cliven Bundy about his remarks that blacks were better off in slavery—later amended to having a small farm— than on welfare. Republican Sen. Dean Heller and Fox cable host Sean Hannity immediately denounced him for his “appalling racist remarks.” by Brendan Perhaps Bundy did sin, but he Trainor sinned more against political correctness than against black people.

North Las Vegas is idle due to high unemployment more than welfare, and nationally there are more whites on welfare than blacks. Bundy’s remarks put himself into the middle of a political battle much larger than his personal fight against the Bureau of Land Management. The Western states held a summit on the federal land transfer issue the same weekend Bundy made his inelegant remarks.

It is hard to associate the Sagebrush Rebellion 2.0 with racism, unless you want to call the governments of all the Western states racist.

Those on the left stopped calling themselves “liberal” and prefer “progressive” because the right has

successfully identified liberalism with welfare dependency and fraud.

The original meaning of liberal came from the Enlightenment idea of liberating oneself from the state.

This original class theory names the state, especially when colluding with state established religion and crony corporate power, the oppressor.

Classic liberalism proposed a civil society free from concentrated state power that respects work, initiative and private property.

Modern liberalism desires concentrated state power to create a new society based on an oxymoronic collectivist diversity. Liberals follow Jean Jacques Rousseau rather than John Locke. They changed the class struggle to a war of envy over the means of production rather than of liberation from the power of the state. Rousseau’s social contract theory is obsessed with inequality and a universal political will. He changed freedom from a natural condition to a political benefit.

“Democracy” came to mean an interventionist state growing in power as

it constantly fixes perceived market failures to change outcomes. The problem is that government intervention just makes things worse.

The Welfare Reform Act of 1996 is one of the few recent conservative victories. Democratic Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan and libertarian scholar Charles Murray questioned the welfare state. They said the welfare state led to a cycle of dependency, creating powerlessness while encouraging irresponsibility and damaging the black family. Their arguments revived the idea that work is preferable to welfare.

A 67-year-old rancher suddenly in the national spotlight spoke clumsily. A similarly aged Sen. Harry Reid, uses his position of power to call his opponents anarchists—if only!—and un-American. He called Bundy and his followers “domestic terrorists.” Bundy retorted the Senate ought to “reel him in.”

Niger Innis spoke with Bundy about his remarks, and he’s satisfied Bundy is not a racist. Niger is the son of Roy Innis, the founder

of CORE (Congress for Racial Equality). Innis is running for the U.S. House in Las Vegas against a liberal incumbent. Perhaps Innis can better articulate the ideas that Bundy stumbled over, but conservative and libertarian black public figures have it only marginally better than Bundy.

They can’t be called racist so Uncle Tom is the preferred epithet. Just ask Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Sen. Rand Paul is challenging the left’s vise grip on black voters.

His outreach to minorities is drawing considerable interest from the NAACP and other civil rights organizations. While Sean Hannity has been attacking the NAACP for excluding black conservatives, Paul has been courting the venerable civil rights organization by eloquently attacking the devastating effects of the war on drugs on black families.

Bundy sinned? Let the pundit or politician who is without sin cast the first stone. Ω

Marijuana watch The Nevada Cannabis Industry Association filed an initiative petition that, if approved, would provide full fledged legal marijuana in the state. If the 101,667 signatures are gathered, the petition would go first to the 2015 Nevada Legislature. If the lawmakers decline to enact the measure, it would then go onto the ballot for voters to decide. The measure provides for a 15 percent tax on sales. In medical marijuana news, Nye County Commissioners are considering measures to repeal an already-adopted dispensary zoning bill, and another measure allowing individuals to continue growing their own after a dispensary opens. A hearing on those measures is scheduled for May 19.

District Attorney Brian Kunzi informed the commissioners that growing marijuana for medical purposes is illegal under new state law if there is a dispensary is operating in their jurisdiction and can serve their needs. The commissioners are moving ahead with it anyway.

In Pahrump—which is located in Nye County—the town board is considering licensing fees for the cultivation of marijuana inside the town. “I would like to have the simplest procedure for getting the license,” board chair Harley Kulkin said. “We want to entice everybody to bring their business here.”

Good company Seven percent of Nevadans consider their state to be the worst state in which to live. That’s 10th in the nation.

Among those who place ahead—or behind—Nevada on this inverse list are Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi and Alabama.

Illinois placed first, considered the worst by a fourth of its residents.

Nevada casinos subject Macau workers to toxins Efforts by casino workers in Macau to get rid of smoking appear to have failed, with government officials instead likely to require smoking lounges to pacify the workers.

Familiar Nevada names like MGM Resorts, Wynn and Las Vegas Sands are players in the toxin war. Customers may come and go, but workers are exposed to smoke for entire shifts.

In protest marches in January and last week, casino workers said they wanted the full smoking bans in casinos. “It’s unreasonable to say that people would stop coming to Macau for gambling when they can’t smoke when playing,” casino union member Kelvin Leong Kuok-cheong told the South China Post. “I’ve even seen a gambler who didn’t go to the toilet for 10 hours.” Another protest is set for July.

The workers also protested constant toadying of government officials to tourism, saying that when land on the cramped peninsula becomes available, it is usually made available to the casino industry instead of being used for housing.

Vexing problem Nevada has laws against annoyance Prompted by an article in the Wall Street Journal, governments across the nation are reexamining their laws to by weed out old “annoyance” statutes Dennis Myers and ordinances. Nevada law has a number of them, which are mainly enforced by local governments.

The March 29 Journal article described the case of Willian Barboza, who was ticketed for speeding in the upstate New York town of Liberty. He paid the fine by mail and wrote “FUCK YOUR SHITTY TOWN. BITCHES” on the citation. For good measure, he crossed out Liberty’s name and substituted “Tyranny.”

Sen. Richard Segerblom Judiciary Committee chair Barboza was then cited again, for “aggravated harassment in the second degree,” which is triggered when someone “Either (a) communicates with a person, anonymously or otherwise, by telephone, by telegraph, or by mail, or by transmitting or delivering any other form of written communication, in a manner likely to cause annoyance or alarm.”

That would appear to cover most reader comments on most newspaper websites.

Barboza has struck back with a free expression appeal. The Journal article pointed out that the U.S. Supreme Court has already

overturned annoyance laws in a 1971 case, Coates vs. Cincinnati.

In that ruling, two appeals—both in Ohio—were combined in one case.

In one appeal, an African-American man was arrested in Euclid after he dropped a black woman off at an all-white residential area and did not immediately depart. He was in his car talking on a two-way radio when arrested. In the second appeal, an antiwar protester was arrested while picketing a draft office, and four workers were arrested while picketing a plant, both in Cincinnati.

“Conduct that annoys some people does not annoy others,” wrote Justice Potter Stewart, an Eisenhower appointee. “Thus, the ordinance is vague, not in the sense that it requires a person to conform his conduct to an imprecise but comprehensible normative standard, but rather in the sense that no standard of conduct is specified at all. As a result, ‘men of common intelligence must necessarily guess at its meaning.’” The phrase quoted at the end was from an earlier Supreme Court ruling.

As Matthew Lippman wrote in Contemporary Criminal Law, “This did not mean that Cincinnati was helpless to maintain the city sidewalks; the city was free to prohibit people from ‘blocking sidewalks, obstructing traffic, littering streets, committing assaults, or engaging in countless other forms of antisocial conduct.’” In other words, specificity had to be provided.

But governments all across the

country missed the message, and retained their annoyance laws, which serve the purpose of allowing police to deal with situations they don’t like when there is no law that actually covers those situations.

Police in Peoria, Ill., last week used an annoyance law to raid a home to bust a Twitter account that poked fun at the mayor by impersonating him. The Peoria raid became a joke across the nation, but Mayor Jim Ardis defended it and attacked the press for its coverage. (Twitter went along with the town and had already shut down the account before the raid.)

One person’s annoyance may be another person’s music, and how subjective these judgments can be was discussed by Minnesota Judge Steve Halsey of the Wright County District Court, who—after reading the Journal article—wrote in a St. Paul newspaper essay, “At least one Minnesota city had its ‘no loud music’ ordinance found unenforceable because of vagueness. Why should it be illegal and chargeable for teens to play loud rock music while driving through downtown at midnight, but probably not illegal or chargeable for a senior citizen to play WCCO news at high volume when driving downtown at midday?”

NBC reported in March, “Brighton, west of Detroit, passed an ordinance in 2008 making it illegal to repeatedly tick off another person in ways that ‘serve no legitimate purpose.’ Meanwhile, the Indiana Court of Appeals last month voided part of a state law that said it’s criminal to harass or annoy another person when intoxicated. The statute provided ‘no guidance’ for what makes someone’s conduct annoying, the court found.”

On the other hand Nevada has at least 11 state laws that contain the term annoy (or annoyance and annoying), sometimes in company with terms like delay, harass, hinder, oppress and vex.

They touch on phone calls, behavior on public conveyances, trespass, failure to pay wages due, breach of promise, collection of information

by Child and Family Services, rental agreements, and deceptive trade practices.

Nevada Senate Judiciary Committee chair Richard “Tick” Segerblom said it’s an issue the legislature might move on.

“We have actually been getting rid of statutes like that, that are unconstitutional,” he said.

But such laws need to be brought to the attention of legislators, and

the most likely time for that to have happened was when Coates was handed down by the Supreme Court in 1971.

Segerblom said he may bring the matter to the attention of the Advisory Commission on the Administration of Justice. It examines these kinds of issues and sometimes brings them to the attention of legislators. Its membership includes a Nevada supreme court justice, district attorney, sheriff, public defender, parole commissioner, representative of the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, district judge, plus the prison director, state attorney general and others.

“It’s a question we could even analyze during the interim,” he said.

One community recently repealed its annoyance law before the Journal article appeared. In Grand Rapids, Michigan, the city commission got rid of a section of the city code that read, “no person shall willfully annoy another person” in the city. The section had been enacted in 1976. City Attorney Catherine Mish had called the section “simply unenforceable.”

That drew praise from Reason, the libertarian magazine, which reported other developments: “It seems 2014 is shaping up to be a good year all around for freedom of annoyingness.

In January, the British House of Lords voted against a clause imposing sanctions on anyone in England and Wales engaging in ‘conduct capable of causing nuisance or

annoyance to any person.’ And last month the Indiana Court of Appeals ruled that simply being drunk and annoying wasn’t a crime.”

There may be something in the water in Ohio. In 1962 the Ohio Supreme Court ruled on a lower court decision invalidating a Columbus city ordinance that banned keeping animals that made “audible sounds to the annoyance of the inhabitants of this city.” (Residents who had moved to new homes adjacent to a 15-year

The Lahontan Audubon Society celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. That’s 50 years of conservation, preservation and education about birds, bird habitat and other wildlife in northern Nevada and some nearby California areas. by Sage Leehey The chapter is part of the larger National Audubon Society and reaches many people with a wide membership and many public education events for s age l@ children and adults, according to Kathy Oakes, board of trustees member, news review.c om and communications and membership chair.

“We have approximately 1,200 members of our chapter because they’re members of the national society, and we have another almost 200 members who have joined just our local chapter and aren’t necessarily national members,” Oakes said. “So together we have almost 1,400 members. That’s a lot of people interested in birding.”

LAS plans to celebrate their anniversary with an ice cream social and bird walk on June 7 at the Galena Creek Visitor Center. The society has over 80 taxidermy mounts of birds at the visitor center that are also used by education committee chair and former vice president Alan Gubanich to teach kids about birds in classroom visits to various schools in the area. He also does field trips to Washoe Lake with students to teach them about birds, habitats and wildlife.

“These are field trips that we’ve been doing for—jeez, I don’t know how many years now, usually starting in mid-to-late April running through May and into the first, sometimes even the second week of June,” Gubanich said.

“What we do is we talk to them about habitat, wetlands since Washoe Lake has got wetlands down there, and the kinds of birds that are there, and sometimes other aspects, like the plant life that is there if we have a plant expert For more information, visit that day. I rely on volunteers heavily to help me run these trips.” www.nevadaaudubon.

Gubanich runs all the field trips and really enjoys them. There’s a few org. different activities that they do regularly on these trips. The two main activities are bird watching, where he lets the kids use binoculars to look at and identify birds, bird nests and related things in the area, and aquatic study, where the kids look at water samples under microscopes from the lake or wetlands to find and identify the tiny creatures in the water. They then talk about food chains and how birds eat many of these little creatures.

A new activity Gubanich particularly likes is having the kids build bird nests using a clothespin and piece of wood as their beak and foot. He has the kids look at intricate nests and try to make some for themselves.

“Then I talk about how, after they build the nest, they have to worry about a storm knocking it down or winds blowing the eggs out,” Gubanich said. “So I say, ‘Here comes a windstorm!’ And I blow hard at each nest, trying to blow stuff out of it. They really get a kick out of it.”

Sometimes they have a botany expert come and talk about the plant life and habitats in the area, too. Gubanich just wants to get kids interested in birds and nature in general with his classroom visits and field trips to try to help with future conservation and preservation movements.

“I just like to get kids excited about being outdoors and particularly excited about birds and bugs,” Gubanich said. “I think [the field trips and classroom visits] wake kids up, make them aware of some things they may not be aware of and hopefully spark some interest in some kids going on to maybe become a naturalist, a biologist, an ornithologist, an entomologist or something in the future.” Ω OPINION

ara O’Keefe—who once punished her daughter by showing up to her school dressed as Wonder Woman—loves a good costume. She’s a 43-year-old mother of three who runs a chocolate-tasting-party business in Carson City. A few years ago, the downturn in the economy prompted O’Keefe and her friends to look for spendthrift ways to enjoy girls’ night out. They decided to try a pub crawl.

“Even if you are on a tight budget you can afford a $5 cup and a $2 drink,” O’Keefe says, referencing the commemorative cups and drink specials crawl participants receive. “I also like to have fun and thought it was the perfect excuse to wear a costume, and people won’t look at you funny.”

What’s a pub crawl? Anyone who’s been around Reno for a month or two knows, but essentially, it’s organized bar-hopping, often done by people dressed in themed costumes. It’s by no means a modern concept. References to pub crawls can be found dating back to the 19th century.

In recent decades, though, pub crawls have become increasingly prevalent the world over. But with a total of eight annual costumed crawls—each drawing between 1,200 and 15,000 OPINION

participants—it’s little wonder some people have gone so far as to dub Reno the “pub crawl capital” of the nation. And with the implications that pub crawls hold for Reno’s government, its people and its local businesses, the designation doesn’t actually seem too far afield.

With O’Keefe’s collection of skillfully constructed costumes, it’s doubtful anyone would ever think she got into the hobby to save money. In addition to having gone all out for a costume based on the Silk Spectre character from DC Comics’ limited series Watchmen, for the annual Superhero Crawl, O’Keefe has also put together vampire, pirate, leprechaun and zombie getups to make even the craftiest of costumers envious.

Behind the masks With an anticipated total attendance of between 30,000 and 40,000 people in 2014, the pub crawls are not just a good time. They’re also good for business, especially for the 20 to 50 bars that register in them regularly.

Mikkel Dybvig is co-owner of 3rd Street Blues. He and his business partner, Tim McLean, have been taking part in the crawls for several years now. Dybvig and McLean pay a $250 fee for each crawl they register the bar in. The fee nets them a spot on the map provided to crawl participants and also the official designation as one of the crawl’s several “start bars.”

According to Dybvig, being a registered bar on the crawls can make the difference between a good night and the best night of the year, as was the case with this year’s Saint Patrick’s Day inspired Leprechaun Crawl.

“It would have been bigger than a normal Saturday, but it wouldn’t have been nearly as big as it was, because of the organization that the people at Let’s Do Things put together,” Dybvig says.

“The people” are the husband and wife team behind seven of Reno’s themed crawls, “BORN Ed and Heidi Adkins. The Adkins pair is responsible for organizing and promoting the TO CRAWL” pub crawls. Dybvig is not alone in crediting them for making a real difference in business.

Jordan Slotnick and his bar manager, West Muller, report that the themed crawls account for roughly 10 percent of their total yearly profits. The extra revenue, they say, allows them to reinvest money in the business.

“If it wasn’t for Ed, I wouldn’t be getting my new floors, my new bathrooms, my new furniture, my new remodel for the bar,” Muller says.

Ed Adkins probably bought a few things with the fruits of his labor, too. He recalls the friend who years ago told him about a guy who made his living by organizing pub crawls.

“Wouldn’t that be great?” wondered Adkins, who has long run events but never thought he’d be able to do it full-time. Little did he know, a party he would throw to celebrate his own birthday would lead him into a career.

“I love Halloween. It’s my favorite holiday, you know,” Adkins says. “I love zombies a lot, so I thought let’s just have a zombie bar crawl. It just all made sense. It really was just to celebrate my birthday.”

Adkins recalls worrying that no one would show up. He put together a last-minute zombie costume from a suit he purchased at Savers.

Mostly, though, he remembers being happily surprised when the first zombie crawl—his birthday celebration—drew a few hundred participants who traveled the darkened city streets together from bar to bar.

craWl promoter “The trek from Red Rock to Strega was the best because it really looked like a zombie horde, you know, making it down the street,” Adkins says.

Today, Adkins and his wife work together out of an office in Midtown. What started as a birthday celebration has indeed become a full-time business. In recent years, the Adkinses have begun looking for ways to diversify the pub crawl, adding costume contests, 5k fun runs, Red Carpet events, and—most recently— encouraging bars to offer specials like nonalcoholic drinks and food.

Why do you think they call them craWls? Christine Adams is a marketing consultant who partners with Join Together Northern Nevada, nonprofit organization that works to address substance abuse issues in Washoe County by providing information, assessments and grant funding for prevention and treatment programs.

Adams is also a member JTNN’s Environmental Strategies Committee and says the themed pub crawls have been on the Committee’s radar for quite some time. When a promotional slogan used for the 2011 Zombie Crawl caught their attention, Adams and her fellow committee members decided it was time to take action.

“Their tagline said, ‘Dead is no reason to quit drinking,’” Adams says, adding that the slogan was offensive to some and especially to those who’ve lost loved ones in drunkdriving accidents.

Adams and her colleagues decided to conduct what they call an environmental scan during the 2011 Santa Crawl, which took place a few months later. The scan involved taking two 18-year-old men dressed in Santa costumes to the event to see how many bars they were able to enter. While no citations were issued during the scan, Adams reports that only 44 percent of the bars turned the two underage men away. “And that was the point where we decided that, yes, in fact, there is a problem.

Aside from minors being able to get into bars, there were also other environmental issues,” Adams says. “We saw people puking on the

street. We saw a woman get hit by a car. We saw somebody with their eyes rolling back in their head passing out outside of the Freight House District. I mean, it was just pretty much mayhem.”

After the scan was completed, Adams and her colleagues applied to receive a Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking Act Grant through The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The grant abstract explains their motivation for applying: “JTNN would like to intervene with the Reno based pub-crawls in order to make alcohol less accessible to underage persons at these events. … In Reno, the crawls began in 2008, with current estimates suggesting recent crawls may include up to 7,000 or more participants. It is estimated the majority of these participants are younger than 25, with many likely being underage.”

The grant application was accepted. Today, the resulting compliance check program run in cooperation with the Reno Police Department’s Regional Street Enforcement Team is in year two of four.

old enough to craWl Detective Sgt. Ron Chalmers supervises the RPD’s Regional Street Enforcement Team, which is responsible for conducting the STOP Grant compliance checks during pub crawls.

The checks, Chalmers says, are conducted similarly to an environmental scan, using volunteer underage decoys. These individuals are then sent out, usually in groups of two, to see if they can gain access to bars using their real IDs. Afterward, the police notify the bars that were scanned and write citations for bars that fail.

“We’re trying to work in cooperation with the bars,” Chalmers says. “We want to see those events succeed, you know. They’re fantastic events for downtown Reno. They bring a lot of people here. They just need to be done properly.”

The numbers from recent compliance checks suggest this method is successful. During the 2013 Santa Crawl, 94 percent of the bars targeted turned away the underage decoys sent to them by the police.

However, not everyone agrees that the compliance checks foster responsibility or that the pub crawls are a draw for underage drinkers in the first place.

At 3rd Street Blues, Dybvig says underage drinkers have never been a problem for his bar.

“The only people that we ever have a problem with at the door are the sting operations bringing minors in,” Dybvig says. “Those are the minors that we see on crawl nights, but we also, in general, cater to an older crowd than most of the other bars.”

Adkins echoes the sentiment, saying that while he is glad someone is addressing potential issues like underage and binge drinking, he doesn’t believe the compliance checks actually indicate whether or not the crawls are a draw for underage drinkers.

“If anything, what the stings tell us is that if you are highly trained, and you are part of a team of people, you can make it through a small percentage of the doors,” Adkins says. “They don’t really tell us whether there was a problem beforehand.”

According to Chalmers—who says he has actually been accused of starting a fight outside of one bar to allow his team’s decoys to sneak inside—the notion that compliance checks are carried out in deceitful way is a misguided one.

“Quite frankly, I became very offended and tired of being accused of trying to cheat when these places were failing all on their own,” Chalmers says.

And as for the decoys, Chalmers explains,

they are not highly trained. They are volunteers, often family members of RPD employees, and they’re told never to give a false age. Instead, if asked their ages, they reply with, “old enough.”

The fees and citations associated with failing a compliance check can be hefty. Individual servers can face fines of up to $500 for serving a minor, and bar owners face a first-time fee of $250. And the costs only go up from there, with a third compliance check failure placing a bar at risk of being forced to close its doors.

Recently, however, Chalmers and Adams have implemented a new element to the compliance check program. Chalmers was able to come to an agreement with the city whereby fines and citations for bars that fail will be waived provided the bar owner invests in a digital ID scanning device. Adams was able to secure grant funding in order to offer businesses a $350 reimbursement for the purchase of a scanner.

The total savings in fees and waivers comes in at a little more than a $1,000—roughly the price of one scanning device.

“So, at this point, we’re saying rather than pay the city of Reno your hard earned money, reinvest in your business,” Adams says. “Buy the scanner, and make sure you don’t fail another compliance check.”

At the Waterfall, Slotnick—who purchased his ID scanner before the program was implemented—says he believes using these devices can make a real difference when it comes to catching underage drinkers before they make it through the doors.

working the Zombie Crawl because he appreciates the unique costumes.

However, some people have reacted negatively to the increased police presence at the crawls. VanDiest recalls hearing people refer to the 2013 Santa Crawl, for which there were a total of 73 police officers on duty—an increase of 30 from the previous year—as “the cop crawl.”

“It was believed by some that if you put twice as many police officers out there, you’re looking to make twice as many arrests and get people out of there, which—again—is not our goal,” VanDiest says. “The only goal of my division, special events, is to make an event safe. If I can make it safe and make zero arrests, believe me, I’m all for that because that’s just less paperwork for my guys.”

The Vampire Crawl will take place on May 9. In prior years, this crawl has occurred in February. The new date was welcome news for O’Keefe and her friends.

“We did the vampire crawl last year, and it was so cold that we were going to skip it this year,” O’Keefe says, but now that the crawl has been rescheduled, O’Keefe says she and her friends will attend. With costumes ready to go, the only thing they need now is a driver.

“We always have a designated driver, and, if something happens that we think we won’t have a desi, then we make a reservation at Silver Legacy or one of those places—close by and they always offer specials for the night of the crawls.” Ω

“We do check everybody’s ID through a digital ID scanner,” says Slotnick. “We got in trouble a few years back, and because I’m not necessarily down there, and I’m not the one bartending, I wanted to give them the tools that they needed in order to reduce the risk as much as possible for me as a business owner while also maintaining consistent service.”

Reno: A city to cRAwl home to Alexis Hill is the special events program manager for the city of Reno. It is her job to act as the go-between for event promoters and city staff. Hill works closely with the RPD’s Traffic and Special Events Unit, the Reno Fire Department, and the city’s public works department. They refer to themselves collectively as “special events rock stars.” In recent months, Hill says, they’ve made significant changes in the way the events are managed, including a substantial increase in the number of police officers patrolling the crawls.

“We like these events. We think these are good for the community,” Hill says. “Our job is to make the city of Reno an awesome place to live and a fun place to visit. So, the safety precautions that are put in to place and the additional staffing is just to keep it that way.”

Endearment or Sally Field in Steel Magnolias and Forrest Gump. I went with some fringe choices representing movie moms that made an impression on me over the years. As you will probably deduce from the following list … I have serious mommy issues.

(Terry Jones) in Life of Brian (1979):

Whether she was taking her kid to a stoning, blowing centurions so she could buy food, or just giving her son a hard time as he’s getting crucified, Mandy is the ultimate movie mom.

Maybe she got a little out of hand when she scolded a naked, post-coital Brian (Graham Chapman) in public (“He’s not the Messiah … he’s a very naughty boy!”), but she did take her kid to the Sermon on the Mount. Not a lot of moms managed to do that.

Mum

(Elizabeth Moody) in Dead Alive (1992):

I’m going to have to go ahead and call this movie mom the worst ever.

In addition to not letting her son date freely, she eventually eats her own ear and tries to put her kid back in her womb. This is a mom who simply isn’t willing to just let go. She also ate her son’s girlfriend’s dog, which is generally frowned upon.

(Elizabeth Perkins) in Finding Nemo (2003):

The voice of Perkins made a beautiful impression before her clownfish character got eaten by a barracuda in this Disney classic. The mom dying here was in the tradition of other Disney cartoon moms dying in the likes of Bambi, The Fox and the Hound and Cinderella (mom notably dead when film starts). For all of you thinking Dumbo’s mom died too, you are wrong. She survived until the end of the movie. She was a trooper.

(Anne Hathaway) in Les Miserables (2012):

Say what you want of Anne Hathaway, but she’s a killer screen mom. She gets a seriously bad haircut live on screen, she gets consumption, and she delivers “I Dreamed a Dream” in one, teary take after sleeping with a yucky sailor so she can provide for her daughter. Now that’s a mom!

Mother Sister watched over that street in Brooklyn like a guardian angel, then screamed mightily as Sal’s Pizzeria burned to the ground, a victim of Mookie’s (Spike Lee) justifiably vengeful garbage can. I’m not sure who exactly she was mom or sister to, but she definitely had a strong mommy vibe.

In what has to be the greatest all time cinematic depiction of the Virgin Mary, Sinead O’Connor gave the young, insane protagonist in this film foul-mouthed motherly advice that must’ve enticed many a priest to throw tomatoes or grenades at the screen.

Well, she was an adoptive mom of sorts, but a mom all the same. She and Nicolas Cage kidnap a boy from a couple with quintuplets. (“They got more than they can handle!”) The moment in the car when she cries, “I love him soooooo much!” is the ultimate depiction of a mom’s sometimes touched-in-the-head affection for her son, and it’s not even really her son.

In one of the most uncomfortable mom situations in cinema history, Missy, a former classmate of Bill’s (Alex Winter) marries Bill’s dad, making her his stepmom. This, of course, brought about Ted’s infamous line, “Remember when I asked her to the prom?” Shut up, Ted! Missy would, of course, go on to marry Ted’s dad in Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey.

Stands with a Fist (Mary McDonnell) in Dances with Wolves (1990):

Will Ferrell’s Moms

in Talladega Nights (2006), Step Brothers (2008) and Wedding Crashers (2005):

Will Ferrell has had some great screen moms. Jane Lynch in Talladega, going shopping while her young son takes the car for a joy ride. (OK, Ferrell’s character was being played by a younger person in a flashback, but Lynch still counts as his mom in the movie.)

Mary Steenburgen in Step Brothers, shocked that her own child uses a bicycle as a weapon. And then, there would be the off-screen mom to his Wedding Crashers character Chazz Reinhold. “Hey Mom … can we get some meatloaf!”

(Mabel King) in The Jerk (1979):

When Navin (Steve Martin) is feeling a little blue at his birthday party because he doesn’t quite fit in (“You mean I’m gonna stay this color?”), she fixes him his favorites: tuna fish sandwich with mayonnaise with a Twinkie. Then she hugs the crying Navin as he flails away with his snapping fingers, unsuccessfully trying to find the rhythm. She’s awesome.

Kelly

(Collette Wolfe) in Hot Tub Time Machine (2010):

I know it’s customary to name Lea Thomson of Back to the Future as cinema’s great time travel movie mom, but I’m going to give a shout out to Kelly, who winds up having raunchy sex in front of her future, time traveling son Jacob (Clark Duke). In this moment, Jacob witnesses his own conception, and he’s not pleased.

Amanda Grayson

(Winona Ryder) in Star Trek (2009):

How cool was Spock’s mom? She did that whole, relatively calm stare thing into her son’s eyes right before the ground fell out from under her and she cashed in her chips. If you haven’t seen the film, that’s a spoiler. You’ve had enough time to see the movie, so you can only blame yourself.

While I can’t remember if Stands with a Fist actually has a kid in this movie, I am including her only because I got in trouble with my own mother for taking her to see this film.

She deemed it too violent—most notably during the scene where Robert Pastorelli is brutally shot with arrows and scalped—and ditched me at the theater. I stayed behind to watch the rest of the movie, of course. She was being a real jerk.

(Ann-Margret) in Tommy (1975):

All I really remember about this was being very young, seeing the hot Ann-Margret covered with beans and chocolate while humping a hot doglike throw pillow and feeling very confused in my pants.

Rupert Pupkin’s Mom (Catherine Scorsese) in King of Comedy (1982):

One of the all time great “off screen voice” moms, telling Rupert (Robert De Niro) to turn down his audition tape. Rupert’s responsive screams of “Mom!” are epic. We should also give props to the moms Mrs. Scorsese played in Mean Streets, Goodfellas and Casino.

(Loraine Gary) in Jaws: The Revenge (1987):

When this lady’s son gets eaten by a shark, she travels to the Bahamas and ultimately drive’s a boat’s prow through the bastard’s heart. Oh yeah, she was in the original Jaws and Jaws 2 as well. But she didn’t drive any boats into sharks in those movies!

(Sissy Spacek) in Blast from the Past (1999):

Sneaking snorts of alcohol, occasionally screaming in secluded rooms, but dealing with the chores of motherhood while confined to a bomb shelter with ultimate grace.

One of the great, underrated Spacek performances.

Killarney Sabbatical I don’t consider myself a religious person, but I think the closest I’ve ever felt to God was when by I went to Ireland. My husband and I spent Jessica a two-week honeymoon there, and it’s the Santina most spectacularly beautiful place I’ve ever seen. It’s the only place I’ve ever visited that was so breathtakingly lovely that it actually made me cry. And I think it’s a place that feels like home—it seeps into your heart and your bones, and becomes part of your soul.

Sweet and director Jamie Woodham, having come to them only with this idea: the sense of feeling drawn to and forever changed by Ireland, which she calls in her playwright’s note “that green homeland.”

Killarney Sabbatical certainly does explore this idea, but as it does so it tells the story of Charlotte “Charlie” Byrne, played by Rachel Lopez. Charlie is a professor at a prestigious Midwestern college who returns to a Killarney inn to conduct research for a book about Irish history, and to get to know the daughter she left behind there 20 years ago, when the girl was an infant. The girl, Maggie (played by Tara Brown), is now proprietor of the inn, along with her dad, Jamie Moran (Gary Cremeans), who has never told Maggie about the mother that left her behind, or the complicated circumstances that led him and Charlie to arrive at this particular arrangement 20 years ago.

years in the past (played by Tara Brown and Robert Grant), when Charlie was an aspiring nun and Jamie a flirtatious poet, until the present day. Meanwhile, it addresses issues such as first love, the powerful influence mothers have on daughters, the nature of spirituality and the concept of home.

The script is brimming with refreshingly funny lines, as well as the delightful turns of phrase that are pure Ireland and which I’ve always found charming—things like “feckin’,” “shite” and sentences ending with “is it?”

Adding to the air of authenticity were, I’m pleased to report, some decent Irish

accents. Although in general I liked the actors, I particularly enjoyed Tara Brown in both of her roles, and Robert Grant made an appealing Jamie. The two together had chemistry enough to make a convincing couple. Rachel Lopez’s Charlie is somewhat abrasive, though in some ways this is appropriate for her character.

I found the ending frustrating, though.

Without giving away any plot points, I felt the story ended too abruptly, with little resolved. Maybe that’s the mark of a good story—not feeling ready for it to end. But when the lights came up on the actors taking a bow, it seemed too soon, like I’d missed something. So although I genuinely enjoyed myself, I didn’t have a satisfying sense of closure and felt vexed a bit by it.

Nonetheless, it’s a show I enjoyed, that helped me to revisit a place that’s dear to my heart. And the fact that the play was locally born and raised seems to make it even more special. Ω

Warm wood surrounds the room with a very proper salad bar in the center, by Dave Preston and the tables are formally set with linens and comfortable seats. It’s a casual place that serves one of the great entrees of all time, prime rib.

Executive chef Troy Cannan, whose culinary resume and relationship with the Carano family’s property, the Eldorado, is a northern Nevada legend, says, “It’s a mid range steakhouse with a simple, pleasing menu for everyone.” Room chef Javier Silverio has created a legacy of his own working at the Eldorado for more than two decades and is the master in the kitchen, paying attention to every detail.

Cannan told me Silverio created his own Montreal seasoning, which is basically garlic, coriander, black pepper, Cayenne pepper flakes, dill seed and salt, and maybe some thyme, rosemary and fennel, packed with salt, and slow roasted.

The prime rib offers a generous amount of marbling, which contributes to its juiciness and flavor.

It was succulent and had richness from the bold spices with a hint of smoky black pepper sending an herbaceous savoriness all the way through my mouth. I put a dollop of fresh horseradish atop and everything popped and my sinuses were anew.

The thin cut really brings the flavors home. Big slices are available. The Eldorado cut ($31.95) and the player’s cut ($33.95) are not for the faint-of-heart.

I had a couple of simple sides, like a baked potato with sour cream and fresh bacon, a creamed spinach with a velvet mouth-feel, and a rich and creamy flavor.

It was a meal of simple elegance with flavors and textures galore. There’s a well organized wine list with more than 40 varietals ($25$139) and many by-the-glass ($6.25-$17.50) including the Prevail West Face 2008 Alexander Valley ($17.50) from the house of FerrariCarano. I couldn’t resist.

This is a cabernet sauvignon-syrah blend and is a mouthful of elegance from the minute the nose inhales the first whiff of its bouquet.

Aromas of cassis, blackberry, violet and cigar box are complicated by a subtle smoky quality. It has a good heft and chewy texture, with sweet dark berry flavors and a jolt of oak. Then, this nectar finishes with defined tannins, ripe fruit and impressive persistence.

Gregg’s chocolate cake ($8), a huge, gooey, decadent dark chocolate wedge, screamed a gazillion calories, but life is too short. The cake is made fresh and never refrigerated. This gives it the creamiest opulence in the mouth and made me even doubt my grandmother’s past offerings were legitimate. I will say this: Push me away from the table! Ω

The menu is straightforward ($19.95-$45), featuring 15 items, mostly beef, with a pork chop, chicken, shrimp, lobster and salmon.

Each entrée comes with seasonal vegetables and a starch, and a trip to the soup and salad bar. There are a half-dozen appetizers ($6-$14) and five sides ($5). They serve an early special from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily ($18.99-23.99).

The famous Eldorado mushroom ravioli are available, but I tried the crab-stuffed mushrooms ($12.50).

Dungeness crab, garlic, chopped red peppers, cream and a Bur Blanc sauce created a delicate flavor and slightly sweet taste with a gentle, savory-buttery finish.

Rib roast doesn’t need a marinade or any complicated preparations. The meat speaks for itself. And of course, I had prime rib. I chose the English cut ($27.95). It was thinly sliced

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 In my review of director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man, I suggested that Webb was not a good choice to helm a big budget blockbuster.

In this, my review of his The Amazing Spider-Man 2, I am repeating that statement.

In fact, I will go beyond merely suggesting he wasn’t a good choice and simply call him by a bad choice.

Bob Grimm Webb mucks it up big time with this second go-round featuring Andrew Garfield bgrimm@ newsreview.c om in spandex and cracking wise. While Webb proves himself adept at drama and romance (Garfield and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy are kind of adorable), he botches the action elements and tries to juggle too many villains.

This movie features a goofy villain called Electro (Jamie Foxx), the Green Goblin (Dane Dehaan) and the robotic Rhino (Paul Giamatti). Electro gets the majority of the villain screen time, an unfortunate circumstance given that his baddie is the most uninteresting of the three.

Electro starts off as Max Dillon, a geeky electrical engineer who gets transformed into some sort of bluish, see-through monstrosity after electrocuting himself and falling into a tank of electric eels. He has the ability to move and stop things with electricity, which makes no sense, and disappear into wires and sockets, which also makes no sense. Yes, this is a comic book movie where impossible things are routine, but this stuff is just stupid.

Foxx is clearly trying to break out and do something memorable with this character in both the human and electrified forms. Given

the sheer magnitude of characters vying for time in this mess, he’s just winds up underdeveloped and uninteresting. He wants to be something memorable like Jack Nicholson’s Joker in the 1989 Batman but he’s more like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze in 1997’s Batman & Robin.

DeHaan, an actor I can safely say I can’t stand at this point, makes one really, really miss James Franco as Harry Osborn.

DeHaan always speaks as if he just digs his own voice, even if it sounds like he has a sinus infection.

His generally annoying presence doesn't get all the blame for this film’s mishandling of the Green Goblin. The blame mostly lies with Webb and his makeup folks, who come up with something tragically bad for Goblin’s looks. He basically has oily hair that looks like he hasn’t showered in a while and a horrific skin problem.

Here’s something else that annoys me.

Harry, who has inherited Oscorp from his father Norman (Chris Cooper), is dying because he is slowly becoming a lizard, or at least I think that’s what was happening to him. He goes into some secret chamber at Oscorp to discover a possible cure for himself with spider venom. He has a major reaction to the injection, and saves himself by crawling into the Goblin suit, which he sees for the very first time.

Harry then takes to the skies, expertly, to battle Spider-Man, without reading a training manual or doing some practice flights. Again, I know I’m supposed to accept the outlandish with these movies, but come on!

Garfield and Stone annoyed me in the first movie, but I liked them this time out. Had the movie focused more on their relationship, and perhaps jettisoned a villain or two, this might’ve been something. As it is, the film also spends a lot of time explaining what happened to Peter Parker’s dad. Again, there’s just too much happening in this movie, and most of it is handled sloppily.

A big, dramatic occurrence happens deep in this film. That sequence is the best thing in the movie, and the film most certainly should’ve ended directly after it. Instead, Webb and his writers force a terrible, final battle with Rhino that feels tacked on, and destroys any dramatic tension. After a big shocker, Garfield just goes back to cracking jokes and fighting villains.

Webb is back as director for the next installment, so all seems to be lost when it comes to Spider-Man for the foreseeable future. Ω

Blue Ruin

Director Jeremy Saulnier has some fun with revenge-thriller clichés and creates a few twists of his own with Blue Ruin, a darkly funny, sometimes quite disturbing showcase for actor Macon Blair. Blair plays Dwight, a homeless man that we first see living a meager life in Delaware. He takes baths in other people’s houses, gets his meals from trash bags, and lives in his car. In its opening moments, Blue Ruin seems as if it will just be an interesting case study of a dude trying to survive on soda bottles and discarded hamburgers. Then, just about five minutes into the movie, a policewoman knocks on Dwight’s car window. No, Dwight isn’t getting hauled in for vagrancy. It turns out the law is just doing its duty by informing him that the man who allegedly killed his parents is being released early from prison. This sets into motion a revenge story like no other, where a hairy homeless guy returns to his childhood home and makes a bunch of people wish they had different last names. Saulnier does a lot with a small budget, shooting a solid looking movie with some pretty heavy gore effects.

No, the movie isn’t wall-to-wall bloodlettings, but the moments when the blood sprays are quite impactful. There’s one particular moment when somebody takes a bullet to the jaw that I won’t soon forget. With Dwight, Blair gives us an original, vengeful character to go alongside the likes of Uma Thurman’s Bride in the Kill Bill movies and Dustin Hoffman in Straw Dogs. He’s unforgettable, and just a little heartbreaking in the end. (Available for rent on VOD, iTunes and Amazon.com during a limited theatrical run.)

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Like Thor 2 and Iron Man 3, this movie shows us how an Avenger deals with life after saving New York City from an alien attack. Cap (an endearing Chris Evans) is just trying to catch up on modern culture now. His list of things to do includes watching Star Wars and Star Trek, trying Thai food and listening to Nirvana. He’s attempting to settle into a world after being frozen for 50 years. Of course, he’s not going to be able to just kick back and relax because evil still exists below America’s shimmering surface, and governmental wrongdoings are going to challenge Cap’s ability to remain loyal to the country he’s named after. After an attempt on the life of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson just Samuel L. Jacksoning it like only Samuel L. Jackson can!), attention is called to the likes of somebody called the Winter Soldier, a fighting machine with powers similar to Cap and identity that won’t be revealed in this review. Cap’s mission eventually leads him to the discovery of HYDRA, an evil movement controlling members of the government, started back in the Nazi days. With Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Falcon (a well cast Anthony Mackie) at this side, Cap looks to take down HYDRA, kick the Winter Soldier’s ass, and possibly work in a date somewhere during the whole mess. The film packs a solid action punch, and some decent dramatics to boot.

Draft Day

In a film that feels more befitting a TV series than a theatrical release, Kevin Costner plays Sonny, general manager of the Cleveland Browns. It’s draft day, and Sonny has some big decisions to make after he trades away his future for the number one pick, much to the dismay of his head coach (Denis Leary). This is all happening after finding out he’s having a baby with a member of his staff (Jennifer Garner) and shortly after the death of his dad. Directed

by Ivan Reitman, who usually helms straight comedies, this is a more dramatic offering from the guy who gave us Ghostbusters.

If there’s a big problem here, it is that we watch Sonny go through all of this stuff on draft day, and never get to see the fruits of his labors. The film ends after the draft day is finished, and we never get to see the team play. I’m doubting there will be a Draft Day 2, so I’m thinking this would’ve worked better as an HBO series or something like that. Still, Costner is good in the role, and Reitman has constructed something that is entertaining, while not altogether groundbreaking.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Writer-director Wes Anderson does it again with another wholly unique, beautiful, quirky movie that could’ve only been made by him. In a performance that must be remembered come awards time, Ralph Fiennes is magically hilarious as M. Gustave, the concierge at the infamous fictional hotel named in the film’s title.

Gustave has a penchant for older woman, much older woman, and his life takes a drastic turn when he is suspected in the murder of an elderly lover (Tilda Swinton in super heavy makeup). Stolen art, scary train rides and a high speed chase on skis ensue, with Anderson even employing stop motion animation at times, as he did with Fantastic Mr. Fox. Supporting performances by Jeff Goldblum, Adrien Brody, Jude Law, F. Murray Abraham, Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, Saoirse Ronan and many more make this a can’t miss film. There’s something so joyous and fun about the way Anderson makes movies.

This is a remarkable, tremendously enjoyable achievement.

The Other Woman

The Quiet Ones

Leslie Mann is one of my favorite comic actresses, and I’ve been waiting for her to get that one project that would put her over the top as one of Hollywood’s premiere go-to actresses. I thought This is 40 would do the trick but, as it turns out, I was probably the only guy in the world who thought that was a good movie. Now comes The Other Woman, a film that casts her as a wimpy victim of Mark, a cheating husband (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). She winds up befriending Carly, his mistress (Cameron Diaz), and she becomes a stronger, independent person as the film progresses. Whatever.

Director Nick Cassavetes is trying to do a straight comedy here, and things work well enough for at least half of the movie. Mann is at her pathetic best when stalking Diaz, crying on her doorstep with Boston Market food in hand as a peace offering, and a big Great Dane in tow. I admit to enjoying this movie a little in its early stages, thinking it might be the showcase Mann deserved. Then, The Other Woman crashes into a creative wall, sending its stars through the narrative windshield and the movie into stupidity oblivion. I’m not exactly sure of the precise moment when this one starts to go off the rails. Maybe it’s when yet another mistress, played by Kate Upton, enters the scene, and the women start working together to torture and destroy the cheater. Now, mind you, I am all for a movie where a cheater gets his comeuppance. However, I’m not actually up for a movie where one of the revenge seekers is played by the beautiful but bland Kate Upton. What starts as a relatively amusing comedy devolves into ugly, messy business that is not in the least bit entertaining.

Here we go with another low cost, poorly lit, flimsily shot horror movie that substitutes loud, jarring noises and cheap parlor tricks for genuine scares. Jared Harris plays Professor Joseph Coupland, a snobby chain smoker who is conducting an inexplicable experiment on mental patient Jane Harper (Olivia Cooke). I say inexplicable because I never did really figure out what the hell was going on in this movie. I can tell you that the experiment is being filmed by an amateur filmmaker (Sam Claflin), which at least allows for some of that “found footage” horror movie feel we’re all getting sick of. As far as I could gather, Jane is possessed, but the professor is trying to prove that she is just sick, although he seems to believe there are dark forces at hand, or something like that. It’s all very confusing and, ultimately, very stupid. Director John Pogue provides what he would like to think are shock moments, but they are basically just irritating.

He favors sudden, loud noises, and there’s something about their timing that renders his scare attempts impotent. It was a true task watching this thing.

Learning curve Jelly Bread There are many new things in the works for local funk rock band Jelly Bread.

The road warriors recently signed by Laura Davis with a new management company, Blue Mountain Artists—which also manages Tahoe’s Dead Winter Carpenters, acquired a new upgraded tour van tentatively named “Destiny,” and have an upcoming schedule which will take them on their longest and farthest tour to date.

The band came up with a solution to constant touring and a need for time to compose new material—use a little thing they do on an almost daily basis: sound check.

“This is the first time we got to the studio, and had only two songs that I had written previously,” Berry said. “The rest were just grooves that we had done during a sound check and recorded on the phone.”

One key difference to the material on the new EP is its contributors. Starting out, Berry was the sole songwriter, then came drummer and fellow original member Cliff Porter contributing lyrics. Now, with two new members who are also songwriters, Eric Matlock—who joined Jelly Bread two years ago as keyboard and organist—and bassist Dante Orlando, who came on just two short months ago—Berry says the songwriting for Jelly Bread has morphed.

“It’s become very much a collaborative,” Berry says. “It’s really refreshing, I don’t have to do everything, and that’s awesome because I only do things a certain way, and you can only eat chili with the same recipe for so long before you’re sick of it. There’s got to be other chefs.”

For its new release, the chefs of Jelly Bread have cooked up what Berry describes as “pretty heavy material”—with the content being reflective of the EP’s name.

One of the tracks, “Home,” is about the pains of constantly being on the road and missing family.

“Honestly, I wrote, ‘Home’ because it’s about my ex-wife leaving me because she was tired of this shit,” Berry said. “I lost my family, but this is what I’m still doing, and that’s what it’s about.”

Another track on Lessons Learned titled “Personal,” has a similarly serious sentiment.

“It’s about somebody saying they’ve got your back, and they’re your friend and then just pulling the plug and leaving you hanging,” Berry said. “It’s all very real stuff that we’ve experienced as a band over the last year or two. We’ve learned a lot about what it takes to do this, and we wouldn’t be sacrificing the time and energy if we didn’t believe in it. This is everything. Lessons learned.

Hopefully, we keep learning.” Ω

On top of it all, the four-piece outfit is about to release a new fivesong EP titled Lessons Learned, the first since 2012’s hefty 14-track, No Dress Code. While this release may be shorter, the material it covers is an all-encompassing depiction of Jelly Bread itself—featuring a rock song, a country track, some old soul and some funk. The quicker EP route is the direction the band sees itself continuing in for the future.

“We ran into that a lot where people kept asking, ‘We already got your CD. When are you going to have something new?’” said singer, guitarist and lap steel player Dave Berry. “We didn’t want to have to take two and a half years to record something again, it took us that long to get everything buttoned up on [No Dress Code]. But now we’re so busy and on the road all the time that it’s hard. But we try to find time to write new songs when we can.”

National Train Day

The Nevada State Railroad Museum will operate and offer rides aboard Virginia & Truckee Railway’s McKeen motor car No. 22 to commemorate National Train Day on Saturday, May. 10. The car entered service for the V&T on May 9, 1910, and was retired in 1945. No. 22 is the only restored and operable McKeen motor car in the world. In 2012, it was granted National Historic Landmark status. The McKeen motor car will operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Train fares are $8 for people age 12 and older, $4 for museum members and children ages 4-11, and free for children age 3 or younger. Museum admission is $6 for adults and free for museum members and children age 17 or younger accompanied by an adult. The Nevada State Railroad Museum is at 2180 S. Carson St., Carson City. Biggest Little Birthday Party

Reno River Festival

T

he 11th annual festival brings some of world’s top kayakers to downtown Reno for a weekend of whitewater sports, music, food and libations. The event begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, May 10-11, at Truckee River Whitewater Park and Wingfield Park, located between First Street and Arlington Avenue. Activities and attractions include yoga in the park and kayaking and canoeing clinics on both days of the event, as well as live music by performed by various bands. Saturday’s musical lineup features Cole Thomason, The Kanes, Wayland and Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit and closes with headlining act Old Dominion at 5:30 p.m.

The freestyle finals take place at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the awards ceremony at 7 p.m. Sunday’s highlights include the SUP Competition at 10 a.m. and the SUP, Slalom and Boatercross Awards Ceremony at 6 p.m.

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation will recreate an iconic photograph of 120 Renoites posing for the dedication of the California Building in Idlewild Park.

Sneer pressure My boyfriend of eight years and I love each other to death and are very happy. Still, I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t bother me that some people think we aren’t in a “real” relationship because we aren’t married and live separately. Is there a way to get them to respect the validity of our relationship without walking down the aisle?

Being married does allow for some convenient social shorthand. “Meet my husband” is easier than “If I eat a bad clam and end up puking my guts out at 3 a.m., this is the man who’ll be holding my hair back.”

You can either rebel against convention or be accepted by the masses. Expecting to have it both ways is like running off to the jungle to live with revolutionaries and then demanding your tent be equipped with a microwave.

Is it possible that in some small way, you buy into the thinking of your detractors? Like one of those Louis Vuitton handbags that cost as much as a Ford Fiesta, a husband is a status symbol for women—one that women have been psychologically primed to want. Because women always have a high potential cost from any sex act—pregnancy and a mouth to feed—we evolved to look for reliable signals that a man will commit. The most reliable are what evolutionary psychologists call “costly signals”— those so pricey that only a man who truly loves a woman would be willing to shell out for. A diamond engagement ring is one of these, as is a man signing a contract to spend the rest of his life with one woman when it’s in his genetic interest—and lots of fun!—to pursue a

problem with you listening closely to the voices in your head. Author Richard Arbib If news of the publication of The Vampire Girl Next Door by Reno’s Richard Arbib makes you think there’s another entry in the adolescent vampire parade, you should know that Arbib began work on his book when Stephanie Meyer was six years old, and one critic has written of Vampire Girl, “This isn’t a teenage vampire love story.” Arbib will sign his book from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sierra View Library on May 10.

Why a vampire book?

I’ve liked vampires, particularly female vampires, ever since I was very young and I think it started with the movie called Kiss of the Vampire. And I saw that and thought, “This is the kind of horror movie for me.”

In one interview you seemed to say you took a 30-year hiatus from writing this book.

No, it wasn’t a 30-year hiatus. What happened was I wrote the original draft of it between 1979 and 1982. Then for the next 12 years I had four different literary agents who were representing it. All four came close to getting it published but didn’t get it published.

And then after probably 12 years of having it sitting on the shelf doing nothing, I moved from San Francisco to Reno and then about five years ago I rewrote the novel. Made some changes, added a lot of humor to it because the original draft did not have any humor to it, changed the tone of the novel. …

One critic said your novel is “once again proving the universal allure of the crazy girl.” Was that one of your intentions?

Was writing a novel different from what you expected?

No, not really. I think everybody’s process of writing a novel is different. My process is kind of slow. I get idea and as I get ideas I write them down on 3x5 cards and this may take months or, in the case of my novel, it takes years. And then I put them in a chronological order and then I once I have them in a chronological order, I have a very organized outline and then I work from the outline and the cards and write the book. So I don’t just sit down to a blank page and start making stuff up as I’m typing it on the screen. I have all the events that happen and the dialogue, I’ve already organized it before I sit down to write, so I know the exact order. The plot and

Submitted for your consideration are two comments that have been relatively lost in the uproar surrounding this story. The first is from Mark Cuban, the extroverted and talkative billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks. Cuban said, after Adam Silver’s

Mark, the main character, doesn’t see her that way because she’d really beautiful and sexy, and he’s so attracted to her he doesn’t really look at that aspect of her. But there certainly are aspects of her personality that are a little bit abnormal. …

Last year [after the book was completed] I watched all most every minute of the Jodi Arias trial, her murder trial. And watching her trial … I could see a lot of parallels between the two characters. Ω

Which leads to the question—when are you free to be politically incorrect? If you’re publicly appropriate, can you dare to be occasionally inappropriate in the privacy of your home? Do you have the freedom to be a jerk in your house? Can you be angry? Jealous?

Make angry, hurtful, jealous comments? Can you tell jokes about ethnic groups in your bedroom? Or only whites? And what exactly is a joke?

The poor guy’s girlfriend … is on tape cajoling him into revealing his racism. … She blindfolded him and spun him around until he was just blathering all sorts of incoherent racist sound bites that had the news media peeing themselves with glee.”

This is from Kareem Abdul fucking Jabbar, folks. Kareem is an honorable man who has never been afraid to call out the nazis, jerks and assholes. Yet, even he is moved to recognize that there’s something slightly slimy about this entire affair. Yes, he condemns Sterling’s comments, sure, but, well, damn—where’s the line here? Highway 50 may not be the loneliest road ever; there are historical landmarks to explore along the way.

hey say Nevada State Highway 50 is the loneliest road in America, but that title might be a contradiction since there’s so much to explore.

The real journey begins 60 miles east of Reno. There are remarkable landmarks to tour after passing through Fallon, such as hidden caves, ghost towns and earthquake faults.

Nevada is one of the best places when it comes to summertime family adventures.

We’re close to cities such as Virginia City, Lake Tahoe and San Francisco. But sometimes families have that appetite to fulfill their wanderlust fever, while not having to spend too much money at the same time.

It sounds impossible but cruising through Churchill County on Highway 50 is an affordable way to take the family out on great

day adventures. Most are about an hour or two out from Reno.

Preparing for a day trip to Churchill County is easy. All that’s needed is a backpack full of snacks, water bottles and sunscreen. These trips are like nature-walks, so it’s best to wear a hat along with good clothing and shoes.

Lahontan Reservoir Think of this place like Lake Tahoe except much smaller and surrounded by desert.

Lake Lahontan is a great place to camp, barbecue and swim during the summertime.

The lake is an hour outside of Reno before hitting Fallon, 45 miles east of Carson City.

If the lake is lucky enough this year, the water levels may raise high enough to open up the boat docks.

Don’t forget to bring the dogs, too; they’ll love running around this place more than chewing a bone.

Grimes Point, Hidden Cave This place is pretty much an outdoor museum. At Grimes Point, there’s a self-guided recreational trail filled with petroglyphs on rocks from ancient civilizations more than 8,000 years old. What’s also amazing about this place is that Lake Lahontan once covered it, 700 feet deep. You’ll notice scars and patterns from waves inside of the caves and on the mountains.

If you decide to do the Hidden Cave tour, you will be able to walk inside of caves.

They’re great places to cool down and eat lunch on a hot day. There’s a lot of amazing

photography opportunities, too. They make great memories for the family.

The tours are the second and fourth Saturday of every month at 10 a.m. You can register at the Churchill County Museum in Fallon. It’s 10 miles east of Fallon off of U.S. Highway 50.

Fairview Peak, Earthquake Faults In December 1954, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake rumbled Fairview Peak, a few miles south of Highway 50, an hour east of Fallon.

More than 10 miles of faults were created and the mountains lifted up an average of six feet, almost to the valleys below.

If you haven’t seen earthquake faults before, Fairview Peak is a great place to discover them. The faults are dramatic—very hilly and defined.

There will be signs directing where the faults are. You can travel as far up the mountain as you wish to look at them.

Along the way, you’ll cruise through the desert landscape of Dixie Valley.

The alkali flats, mountains in the distance, and patches of green will make you feel like you’re walking through a painting.

You’ll find a few ghost mining towns along the way as well.

Sand Mountain A message to winter lovers: snowboarding and skiing don’t have to end in the summer. You can try sand boarding at Sand Mountain now.

To play in this big sandbox travel 25 miles east of Fallon. Spring and fall are the best seasons to visit the mountain since the temperatures are cooler. Many people hike

Th i S P l Ac E i S P rE T TY M u c h A n o u Td o or MuSEuM. up the mountain or ride their ATVs. According to the Bureau of Land Management, there is free admission to the mountain on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Sand Springs Pony Express Station The most popular time to visit this landmark is May through September. The station was built in March 1860 to send messages from coast to coast until 1861, when the transcontinental telegraph began operation. At this landmark, you’ll walk through a history of time; the remains of the Pony Express can

be visited by walking into a wall made out of rocks.

There’s also historical markers nearby.

They are blue, Nevada-shaped signs with history text about the area. It’s a tradition for Nevada travelers to take a photo in front of these signs to show proof that you were at the site. You’ll bump into plenty of historical markers as you travel across these locations.

When the day ends After a long, exhausting day of hiking, sightseeing, and exploring the life of rural Nevada, you can stop by one town before snuggling back into your bed in Reno: Fallon.

Virginia City—just a 35-minute hop, skip and jump away from Reno—is a local treasure. In just over three-quarters of a square mile, Virginia City offers a plethora of unique, family-friendly activities. From ghost stories to shopping, candy cravings, museums and authentic stagecoach rides, there is something that will appeal to almost everyone in the family.

As the road up to Virginia City twists and turns, it’s hard to ignore nature’s beautiful

colors. The mountain’s rocks reveal vibrant reds and blues. Wild horses rest in pastures along the way.

“Virginia City is the perfect family getaway,” said Deny Dotson, director of the Virginia City Tourism Commission. “It’s not too far of a drive, but just far enough that you feel like you’re getting out of town.”

Spring is a great time to take advantage of what’s in Reno’s backyard. With no snow and breezy, warm temperatures, it is easy to plan for, and Virginia City’s main street, with shops and restaurants, is an enjoyable walk in the spring sun.

There is a new series of events in Virginia City called “Flashback Friday Free Museum Days.” On the first Friday of each month, all 17 museums in Virginia City are free. This special event opportunity runs May through October, excluding July.

• Mackay Mansion: This was originally the Gould & Curry Mining Company Office, until it was bought by John Mackay.

• Mark Twain Museum at the Territorial Enterprise: Mark Twain wrote for the Enterprise in the 1860s and many of his belongings can be seen on this tour.

• Piper’s Opera House: Prior to being rebuilt in 1885, both Mark Twain and President Grant were on stage at this opera house.

• St. Mary’s Art Center: The center was once a hospital for Comstock miners, but is now an art and retreat center. It was dedicated as such in 1964.

• Saint Mary in the Mountains Catholic Church: This is Nevada’s oldest Catholic church and is still open for mass on Saturday and Sunday. The museum runs tours seven days a week, though, that feature church artifacts and photos.

• Silver State National Peace Officers Museum: Here, you’ll find the Nevada Peace Officers Memorial Room, an interactive room for children and other exhibits that focuses on law enforcement in Virginia City and the rest of the state for the last couple of hundred years.

• Storey County Courthouse: This is Nevada’s oldest continuously operating courthouse, although it was rebuilt in 1876 after a fire.

• The Way It Was Museum: This museum shows its patrons how it was back in the historic mining days. It features a large collection of various Comstock mining items and photographs.

• The Washoe Club Haunted Museum: You may have seen this one on various ghost-hunting shows. The museum boasts access to the crypt and “infamous Spiral Staircase.”

• Comstock Gold Mill: See a functional two-stamp gold mill and learn about mining in Virginia City.

• Julia Bulette Red Light Museum: Learn about Nevada’s prostitution history during the silver rush era of Nevada.

• Gold Hill Hotel: Check out Nevada’s oldest hotel. It opened in 1861.

• Silver Terrace Cemetery: Discover the both historical and eerie cemetery, memorable and identifiable with Virginia City.

• Marshall Mint Museum: Come to see Hugh Roy Marshall’s collection of gems and minerals.

or the past 16 years, the University of Nevada, Reno has reached out to the youth of our community in a way that’s not only fun, but also educational. Kids University, a summer program, has helped enrich the summers of future Wolf Pack fans and students.

Running seven weeks, Kids U offers parents an all-day summer camp option for children interested in learning and playing.

A dynamic combination of recreation and education results in a full day of activity for the campers at Kids U. “I just love how it’s a community program,” said Teri Jones-Rodriguez, program director for Kids U. “Everyone is involved, from the kids to the counselors to the instructors.”

Jones-Rodriguez has been a driving force behind Kids U for the past 12 years.

She helps plan the camps every summer and is also behind the selection of camp counselors.

“We have about 100 applicants for counselors every summer,” JonesRodriguez said. “We usually have about 25-30 actually work for us.”

Camp counselors are all university students. They are chosen based on experience with children and interest in the program. Counselors work 40 paid hours a week for the duration of the camp.

“I was really excited to be picked as a counselor,” said Lindsey Owens, former Kids U counselor. “It was a great way to become more familiar with my own campus and interact with some really great kids.”

Kids U also offers junior counselor positions to local high school students.

These teens receive community service hours and aren’t required to work the full 40 hours a week.

“The counselor and junior counselor options we have really help get teens in the area more involved with younger kids in the area,” Jones-Rodriguez said.

Kids U started in 1998 with six classes a week for six weeks. Now, it offers 13 different classes over seven weeks.

University professors and Washoe County teachers are brought in each summer to teach these classes.

“Classes vary from math to science to art,” Jones-Rodriguez said.

Each class is given one teacher, two counselors and one junior counselor.

“It was always really fun to be in classes with the kids,” Owens said. “They would get really excited about cool chemistry experiments. It made school cool.”

Kids U provides the children an opportunity to take classes like these to help acquaint them with the concept of college.

“It helps them understand that college isn’t scary,” Jones-Rodriguez said. “It’s important to expose these kids at an early age to college campuses.”

With classes taking up the mornings at Kids U, recreation rules the afternoons.

Dodge ball games, rock climbing and swimming at Lombardi recreation center are just a few of the potential activities.

“My favorite part of Kids U is peeking into the gym and seeing all the different kids playing together, no matter what age they are,” Jones-Rodriguez said.

For the Reno-Sparks area, Kids U has become a community-based opportunity to get children active and excited during summers. With a record 1,815 participants last summer, Kids U 2014 is anticipating another successful summer. Kids U will run from June 16-August 1 this summer.

“I love being a part of this university and this specific program,” Jones-Rodriguez said. “We are lucky to live in a town that college kids and young children can do something like this together.”

grew up climbing at Red Rock Canyon and in the gym with my dad in Vegas. I had a blast doing it, and I was pretty good, too, until I stopped going as often because homework started taking away from my climbing time. I still go every once in a long while, typically still with my dad, and I still love it, but it’s just a little frustrating to not be able to climb the high rated routes my 13-year-old self could.

But rock climbing—indoor and outdoor—is an awesome hobby for families and really anyone to get into. It’s a relatively simple sport, especially when you’re in a gym because the gear can be provided for you.

“It’s a great family sport because the families have to depend on each other to climb in here,” owner of RockSport Indoor Climbing Center Mark Gammon said. “You just learn each other’s trust.

It’s a great sport that doesn’t—you’re not going to end up with the soccer mom kind of people screaming and yelling at you. Everybody plays nice when they’re in here, so I think that’s one of the better reasons why it’s a great family sport.”

Gammon thinks that climbers are generally good people to be around for families, too.

“There’s great camaraderie in climbing,” he said. “It’s a very, very social

sport. Climbers basically enjoy other climbers. … Climbers like going places together, they like seeing new things, they like working out together, they like climbing or trying boulder problems, they like camping in the dirt. ... It’s an inexpensive, free-spirited sport that’s enjoyed by everybody.”

And almost anyone can do it. Gammon has seen people of all ages and kinds in his gym, and I personally used to climb with my grandfather when he was around 70 years old.

“I would say probably 3 or 4 is probably the youngest serious climber up to Leo, who is an ex-New York cab driver … and I think Leo is about 81 or 82. It’s a pretty big range,” Gammon said.

Gammon also said that even pregnant women climb at RockSport pretty frequently. They have a pregnancy harness that the mothers can use. Mothers with young children also like to climb at the gym.

“Mom has been climbing up until her doctor says she can’t climb anymore,” Gammon said. … And next thing you know, [the kids are] running around and learning to talk because you can’t really get hurt on our engineered floor out here, so it’s really a safe place for mothers that bring their kids in early in the morning when it’s not packed, and it’s kind of quiet in here.”

Climbing, however, is a sport that you can quickly lose progress if you don’t climb for a while. It can be gained back relatively quickly, too, though if you get back in the gym or on the rocks.

“It only takes a couple days before you start losing muscle memory and muscle mass,” Gammon said. “Climbing has a whole different set of skills than any other sport.”

Being in Reno has advantages when it comes to climbing outdoors. Within a couple hours or much less, you can be at some of the best climbing on the West Coast.

“We certainly got all the climbing areas up at Donner [Summit], which are some awesome, awesome climbing places up there,” Gammon said. “The Snowshed, Schoolhouse, Dinosaur Rock—you can park on the road and 20 feet away, you can start climbing. So they’re very, very close. And that’s—depending on how you drive—30 minutes away. Pyramid. Some of the best climbing in the west is certainly down in the Bishop area. ... And they’re opening up new spots all the time.”

For those wishing to go outside to climb, RockSport does guiding. Their guide is American Mountain Guides As-

sociation (AMGA) certified and knows the climbing areas around here very well, according to Gammon. He also guides RockSport’s outdoor summer camps.

Climbing in a gym used to be for when climbing outside wasn’t possible or preferable because of the weather, which some still use the gym for, but Gammon said that there are now a large number of his customers who only climb indoors. Some come for exercise reasons and others just as a fun thing to do.

“A lot of them are using it to stay in shape, but I’d say the other half of them are looking for a great place to come hang out with their friends,” he said. “This is where they meet up with people of same or opposite sex, they climb, maybe they go outside, but this is what they do during the week. And if they’re hard-core climbers, it beats going to a bar, and it’s cheaper.”

You can also host your birthday party at RockSport, and Gammon said they are packed with these almost every weekend.

Most popularly, they do kids’ birthdays, but they’ve done parties for older groups, too, including a surprise party for a 40-year-old woman.

RockSport also offers gear to rent and to purchase—some of which is RockSport’s own line, Homegrown. The gear from the Homegrown line is all manufactured locally.

“We manufacture all of our own chalk bags, things like our drag pads that are out here,” he said. “We also manufacture a safety triangle that goes on the end of our auto belay devices and a couple of other things.”

His seamstress used to be one of the lead seamstresses for the Rockettes in New York, and she works out of a small shop they have in Sparks. She told Gammon that she can sew anything he comes up with—and has—because at least “it doesn’t have to hold up for 200 shows a year, you don’t have to be able to put it on and take it off in less than two minutes and you don’t have to kick above your head in it.”

RockSport is a “full-on gear shop,” and they keep a selection of gear from other brands in stock, too, and can special order from most companies in the business quickly.

“We’ve got probably 400 pairs of shoes in stock, which is nice because you can try on a pair of shoes, and you can take them out and see how they feel on the wall,” Gammon said.

Hidden Valley Regional Park

This is a great hike on Lake Tahoe for you, your kids and your pooch—arguably one of the best in the area. It’s a pretty easy threemile hike that’s accessible from March through November. The views are gorgeous, with green everywhere and glimpses of Lake Tahoe throughout the hike. There’s a portion of an old railroad grade along the path as well.

Adventures of Reno is pretty broad—what do you guys do?

Well, we pretty much facilitate fun. We offer sightseeing tours, ATV tours, lake sightseeing tours, Jet Ski rentals, motorcycle rentals, bike rentals. So right now, we’re coming up on summer, so our big thing is our bike rentals, hang gliding, Jet Ski rentals, Lake Tahoe cruises, rafting, kayaking, motorcycles—

rentals and tours. And we’re pretty much willing to, you know—anything people are interested in, we try to do. So we pretty much, our motto is we can do it.

What’s your favorite activity or rental or tour that you guys do?

Right now I’m really into the ATV tours.

They’re out in Plumas National Forest. It’s out on the California side. It’s kinda up north from here. We have two different tours— there’s one on the ranch, which is the one I’ve done most recently. And it’s just a really cool thing. Ken Smith—he’s the owner— and he just has really good vibes and he likes to have a lot of fun, so he makes the tours really neat. And there’s a Crystal Peak tour, and that one takes you up on—it’s like a four-hour tour—and it takes you up on the

peak of the national forest. And it’s called the Crystal Peak tour because you’re pretty much in this crystal carved out valley.

Cool. How does the logistics of this all go? Do you have a lot of set tours? What about the rentals?

So, pretty much people call us, and we set up the tour for them. So we take care of all the booking and information. You know, we set up the date, and we figure out how many people are going on the tour, if they’re going to be doing—well, for example, with the ATV tours—single or doubles, what time they want to go on the tour, and we kind of try to fit with whatever their group wants to do. So like for the two-hour tour, we do like skeet shooting and there’s a barbecue. And then the more hardcore ATV-goers, they

tend to move towards the four-hour one. It’s a little more lenient on how crazy you can get on the ATVs. So yeah, we pretty much do the booking for anything.

And are they all tours with a guide?

Yeah. These ones are with guides. They’re guided tours. Most of our guides up at the ranch, they’ve been there for quite a while, and they’re really fun guides. They love what they do. So, you know, you get these people who are stressed out from their jobs and then they end up going on these tours, and they come back around being whole new people because they’re just super relaxed and they’ve had a great time.

And you said you do rentals, too?

Yeah, we rent out the equipment, too. For

ATVs, we have our own fleet that we rent out to people who want to come by with their trailers and go somewhere and do their own adventures. And then some motorcycles, too, which is getting really popular now with the nice weather. We do tours and rentals. So people like to come and rent their motorcycles and you know take them—we have this one group coming out who sounds like they’re doing a coastal tour in the next month, and it sounds like a lot of fun. If people aren’t familiar with the area, sometimes they like to do the guided tours and then a lot of people know exactly where they want to go, they just need the bike and we provide the bike for them.

What are the most popular adventures or activities that you guys do at this time?

Right now, definitely the sightseeing tours only because we’re located inside the Silver Legacy, so we have a lot of people who haven’t been to Reno or they want to see what we have to offer. So it’s a really great way for people to see, you know, Lake Tahoe, which is beautiful, and then go through Carson City, the capital, and then Virginia City. Those are the three places our sightseeing tours stops at. It’s the three big things surrounding Reno that make Reno a cool destination spot.

So, I’d say, yeah, the ATV tours are really family-friendly.

Do you package these things?

How does that work?

We’re actually trying to develop packages right now. Let me look at the one I’m working on right now. Like activity bundles—because the ATV tours, you do have to have your own transportation to get out there, so we’re trying to do car rentals and tours where we bundle two singles or three singles or a double for couples and stuff like that.

You can add barbecues to the combos as well for an additional price.

Besides the ATVs and motorcycles, what are people coming to you for right now?

Right now that’s kind of it just because we’re sort of in between seasons. We just finished up the snowmobile tours, so we’re kind of in between right now. So right now the most popular thing is the sightseeing tour. The snowshoes and snowmobiles are really popular in the wintertime.

Coming up pretty soon, it’s summer.

What becomes more popular then?

I’m sure you get more tourists, but do you get locals at times, too?

Definitely the motorcycle rentals and the ATV tours again.

We do get locals, too.

What would you say is the best deal that a family could do?

What kind of stuff do you get them for typically?

We actually get a lot of locals who rent motorcycles from us. They have friends coming from out of town and maybe someone doesn’t have a bike, so they’ll rent out a bike from us. Or, you know, people who just want to take ATVs out to like Pyramid or something. And even, you know, Lake Tahoe has those catamaran cruises and Jet Ski rentals—we get a lot of locals that are interested in doing that. They just want to go up to Tahoe or another lake.

Probably the day trips to the ranch for the ATV tour because then they can do the lunch, and the trails are super fun. That would definitely be a good family outing that would be fun.

Have you done a lot of these tours, too?

So definitely more of the equipment rentals for locals?

I’m newer here actually, so I’ve done the sightseeing tour and the ATV tour. I came kind of at an odd time, and we didn’t get a lot of snow so I didn’t really get to go snowmobiling. This summer I’m definitely going to get up on the lake a lot and try out a little bit of everything.

Right, right.

What are you most excited to try?

Which makes sense. What would you say are the best things that you offer for families?

I really want to try hang gliding, even though that’s supposed to be one of the scarier adventures, it seems like a lot of fun.

hen it gets warm in Reno, people flock to the water, and the Truckee River is a great place for plenty of adventure with activities like tubing, rafting and kayaking.

Jim Bell of Sierra Adventures, a company specializing in outdoor fun and rentals in the Reno/Tahoe area, thinks that rafting is the best for families with young children and kayaking is great for families with teens or more athletic families. And as for river tubing, there’s more of a party vibe to it because there’s a lot of college students, but it’s also good for families. These activities also draw crowds from different areas, too.

“River tubing is more popular for locals,” Bell said. “But for people coming into town, rafting is probably our biggest interest as far as tourists go. The kayaking hasn’t been that popular these last couple years for some reason.”

Bell said his company typically starts the tubers up at Crissy Caughlin Park for an approximately two-hour float to the downtown Whitewater Park. Rafters have a longer run.

“For the rafting, we go further up river to Mayberry Park, and that’s about a sevenmile run,” Bell said. “In spring time, like conditions right now, we sometimes run it all the way up to Verdi to Crystal Peak Park.

That’s about 13 miles, but as the summer goes on, the water drops so we can only run the Mayberry to the Whitewater Park run.”

Sierra Adventures is busiest from June to August typically, but Bell said the best time to get out on the river for tubing, kayaking or rafting will be in the next month or so because the river is “already up to spring flow.”

Bell also said that some people seem to think that the river flow is much less than it is and has been in the last few years and hopes this won’t affect the popularity of these activities and his business.

“There’s a lot of misinformation given out every year,” Bell said. “There’s a website you can go to, it’s dreamflows.com. You can see the river flows. It has a five-year window, a one-year window, and it has a day-to-day graph where you can see where the water’s going to be for the whole summer. That’s a good way for you to tell.”

He said that river flow was great for these activities last year and is expected to be for the remainder of this year as well.

“Reno is one of the best places to do rafting or tubing or anything like that because in some rivers, they cut back the water—it’s based on dam releases,” Bell said. “Reno doesn’t have a dam. They have reservoirs, but no dams. So the water flow is constant through the whole summer, so you don’t have to stop going. You have a pretty good chance of the water being good all through the summer.”

Take a float on the wild side: Reno’s Truckee River is a great place to spend part of your adventure time this summer.

R

eno has a very different personality than other cities its size. With its gambling, art scene, local food movement, proximity to Tahoe, and the university’s presence, there are a lot of different kinds of people and personalities vying for attention here. All of these things and others mix, blend and bounce off each other to create the quirky overall personality of Reno. And when you’re living here—or even just visiting—you need to at least dip your toes into pieces of each to fully experience this city. Here are some of the things that I think are important to really get a taste of what Reno is all about. Do as many of these as you can in a day to have a real “Reno day.”

Go downtown I mean really go downtown. Gambling is so entrenched in this town’s history that you need to be able to appreciate it for what it was and what it is now. It may not be as lively or as vital a draw for Reno now, but it’s still an important facet. There are also many bars peppered throughout the downtown area with frequent crawls and wine walks. And while you’re at it, you’ll get to see some of the newer sections, too. The Riverwalk is beautiful, especially around this time of year, and there’s some great restaurants, the movie theater and Wingfield Park to enjoy as well.

Visit museums The Nevada Museum of Art is the only nationally accredited art museum in the state, so this one is a no-brainer. Even if museums might not be your kind of thing, you’ve got to visit this one at least once if only to check it off your list. To

Float the Truckee

THe RiVeRWAlk is esPeciAllY beAuTiFul, esPeciAllY ARouNd THis TiMe oF YeAR. Walk through Midtown Midtown is an especially quirky section of Reno. There are quite a few restaurants and shops with an active art scene as well here. This is also a great way to spend your money locally, as most of the places in Midtown are locally owned businesses.

It’s an area unique to Reno, and it lies just south of downtown.

Peavine Mountain and the “N” For the university sector of Reno, taking the hike—or if you’re more athletically inclined, running—to the “N” on Peavine Mountain is basically a rite of passage.

Most students do this multiple times throughout their time at the university, and the university sponsors hikes to paint it each year. For others, this may not be as common, but it’s certainly still a great area to hike or run and also get into the university spirit. Peavine is a big part of Reno because of its location, and it’s also a subject of environmental group-sponsored clean-ups at times.

Floating the river is a very popular activity in town, especially for locals. This is a great time when you can get outside, enjoy the river and have fun with family and friends while experiencing a Reno tradition. You can rent tubes, but some go for ones that they already own or cheap air mattresses. It’s all up to you. For more about this, you can read “Tubing Time” on page 17.

TO THE TERRY LEE WELLS NEVADA DISCOVERY MUSEUM!

Hike Mt. Rose Hiking Mt. Rose is a fun hike not too far from Reno. It’s a great forest hike for a couple of miles, and as you ascend to the summit, the forest clears up, giving you an open view of Washoe Valley. And once you reach the top, you have a gorgeous view of Reno and Tahoe. It’s well worth the trek.

Get up to Tahoe Although it’s not technically in Reno, Lake Tahoe plays a huge part in Reno’s identity. Tahoe is great all year round for a variety of activities. There’s always hiking and sightseeing, and of course there’s skiing, snowboarding and other snow activities in the winter, but in the upcoming months, it’ll be most popular for beach days. Beaches in both South and North Lake Tahoe crowd all summer long for fun in the sun. The beach is great for all ages, and there’s tons to do. From simply swimming and tanning to boating and wakeboarding, everyone can have fun at the lake. And as far as I can tell, most everyone does. Tahoe seems to be a shared and loved experience of most Renoites.
