Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I’ve been a little ticked off by my profession lately, and it all comes back to the Fatal Encounters project we’ve been doing.

As I’ve said a couple of times, I’ve yet to find out that the local cops are doing anything wrong.

You want to see a problem, look in Alburquerque: 24 deaths since 2010. Washoe County has had 32 among all the agencies agencies since 2000. For all I or anyone else knows at this moment, we’re an example to be followed for the whole country.

At most, I’ve found that the police have a culture of secrecy.

For example, since our story about the Sparks Police Department shooting Darcy Latham story came out, they’ve refused to follow the law regarding public documents. If you want to know how bad it has become, on Feb. 18, I requested the press releases the Sparks Police Department Records Division issued in October 2013. These were press releases. I just wanted to see if they ever announced the shooting of Monica Ritchey. Nada.

But then, the Reno Police Department took me on a ride along to see real interactions with the public. It’s guys like the one I rode along with that decrease the number of fatal encounters in Northern Nevada.

The thing that creates suspicion is when law enforcement agencies try to hide stuff that there’s no reason to hide.

This is why I blame the media.

They’ve trained these public employees that it’s OK to ignore the law, that the people covered should decide how they’re covered. Did any of the other media that reported the Monica Ritchey story go back and correct their factually inaccurate reports?

I mean, isn’t it the role of the media to report when the police accidentally shoot someone? Not in Northern Nevada, apparently.

We’ll see. I’m kind of glad that I only have a few more local stories on this topic, and I’ve already done almost all the interviews I need to do. I’ve said it before: This isn’t gotcha journalism; it’s just looking in-depth at an important issue in this country. I’m not even doing journalism that would be considered unusual in other communities.

The big difference

The city of Reno, based on one person’s complaint of the parking meters “being too high” for them to operate (Reno Gazette-Journal), shortened the meters without litigation in March 2014! Now, everyone with a complaint about any code, regulation or condition on a personal whim can now demand change without process unless the city of Reno creates law making it no longer liable for future complaints or demands.

Why would a city, in gesture, open its doors to the act by example to capitulate to one persons complaint, removing the code of a firewall it has in place to protect it from any whim as arbitrary personal feelings or dislikes from every citizen!

A white lie Re “The organic food lie” (Feature story, Feb. 13): Thank you for a well-written article. While it may be extreme to call it an “organic lie,” this article does a good job of pointing out that genetic modification is not related to “organic.” Organic is a misnomer, actually meaning C/H/O/N/P containing compounds. A GMO plant can be more environmentally-friendly, or “organic,” than a non-GMO, because it can be engineered to be more fit in whatever environment it lives. To reject GMOs universally is baseless, as some genetic modifications are unquestionably beneficial. If you are anti-genetics, you are working against environmentalism and even treatments for human disease. So, please, be more specific.

Re “The organic food lie” (Feature story, Feb. 13): It would have been extremely appropriate to define the difference between trans genetic modification versus using cis genes in genetic modification. It is not simply a question of GMO or non-GMO. To treat the question so basically is apathetic.

Damn freedom Re “Bad hair life” (Notes from the Neon Babylon, April 3): Hell has finally frozen over, I find myself in agreement with Bruce Van Dyke on at least part of a story. I agree with him regarding the “bridgegate” Gov. Chris Christie’s bridge closing scandal. I, too, question why Gov. Christie shouldn’t be held responsible? He either ordered or knew about it, or he should have known and not have underlings making those kinds of decisions.

Either way, although I like his directness in dealing with union thugs and liberal media, I have lost trust in him.

In the second part of Van Dyke’s column however, he has fallen back on his preferred pattern of personal attacks. By now, I fully realize that your newspaper wants to be the rebel of the newspaper world and give your columnists free rein over what they write. However, it would seem that decency requires that these childish personal attacks against people that he disagrees with politically would cease, and he

Recall the coons Re “Urban guerillas” (News, April 3): I live in the Old Southwest section of Reno. I read this article with interest, hoping to find out how to make raccoons go back to their storm drains. My dog barks at the raccoons that come right up on the porch and taunt her at night. I have to get up and let her chase them up a tree at 3 a.m. if I want to get some sleep. I was disappointed the article told me little more than its headline.

aside. What this social worker does not know is that I adopted my child through Washoe County Social Services. This means that my husband and I not only had to take many hours of classes but also had to pass background checks and a home study/inspection as well as six months of being considered foster parents until we could proceed with adoption. I am saddened, disheartened and annoyed that this social worker felt the need to berate me as a parent in public. I don’t believe this is how the majority of the social workers in this county behave and hope that Washoe County discourages their social workers from making these types of unnecessary comments to complete strangers that aren’t part of their caseload.

Recently, I was in front of the Wells Fargo building downtown. I had just parked my car and was walking with my 2-and-half-year-old daughter into the building. Yes, to prevent new outbreaks of polio and any other sort of outbreaks. I think they’re important to public health.

We apparently touched a nerve with our coverage of the raccoons that are making their cute, hungry and dangerous little selves known in Reno’s southwest.

While there is not a raccoon running for office, there are raccoons sauntering the streets and fencelines, ever on the lookout for food in garbage cans, compost heaps and those little dogs that squeak more than they bark.

Raccoons are bold. They’ll will enter your home through pet doors and eat any food that’s left out.

They’ll fight with household pets—apparently dogs more than cats—and they’ll attack humans if cornered or to protect their kits. They’re a vector animal, which means that humans or other animals can catch some of their diseases, like rabies.

Psychologists say that knowing you have a problem is the first step toward fixing it. You’ve got a raccoon problem, admit it. Don’t call Washoe County Animal Control, they haven’t the resources to cope.

You can call a pest removal outfit, but it’s expensive, and there’s no guarantee of a permanent solution.

Raccoons are considered by law a nuisance species, so you can legally kill them, but you can’t legally shoot them with a gun in your yard or in your house. Even if you could hit one, and that’s no guarantee, you could end up being contaminated with disease by sprayed blood.

Raccoons are notoriously hard to trap. The exact food that they’ll pick the lock on your front door to get at is utterly uninteresting to them when it’s put in a wire “humane” trap. And if you were unlucky enough to catch one, what are you going to do with

it? Discharge a firearm in city limits? Not a good idea. Drown the little bastard in your big, green recycle bin? That’s considered animal cruelty. And poison is not just cruel, but it can create a bad situation for neighborhood pets.

You also can’t take raccoons into the mountains and release them into the wild. Again, they’re vector animals, and you could infect entire populations of other animals in the transplanted raccoon’s new home, not to mention that a city raccoon has different life skills than a mountain raccoon, and you’re probably just condemning it to death by starvation because you’re too cowardly to do the deed.

But if you are able to trap one—and really, we’re betting on the raccoon in this example—you could have a pest control company kill it. Usually, it’s just a matter of putting the animal into a chamber with carbon monoxide pumped in. Not the way we’d prefer to go, but, hey, it’s you against the raccoon, right?

In truth, the key to living with raccoon is accepting they’re part of your environment. If you don’t give them a reason to come around, they won’t.

Secure your pets’ food. That means putting it in a metal or thick plastic container with a lockable lid.

Don’t free-feed your animals outside and don’t freefeed your animals near a pet door.

Raccoons are a bit dangerous, but you’re better off putting your energy into removing the things that attract them to your house than trying to put them out of your misery. Ω

Who’s out of touch, D.C.?

“Millionaires and drug addicts should not be receiving these benefits.”

That’s how U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei of Nevada responded to a Reno woman who contacted his office recently to urge his support for the extension of federal unemployment benefits. by She is neither a millionaire nor Sheila Leslie a drug addict and was more than a little insulted at his flip characterization of those struggling to re-enter the job market.

Amodei went on to say he was hearing from unnamed employers in Nevada “who offer jobs; potential employees inform them that staying on unemployment is better than their offer. When individuals talk about being on taxpayer benefits is a better deal than being in the workforce, I think that must be examined.”

Without commenting on the awkward grammar of that last sentence, or four other errors I counted in the letter, one has to wonder about the last time Amodei talked to a real unemployed

constituent instead of a phantom company supposedly representing Nevada’s employers. And why don’t businesses consider raising wages if it’s so hard to find employees?

Even if the fantasy employer is real, it’s a stretch to say that unemployed Nevadans would rather stay on public assistance than accept a decent job with benefits. And it’s beyond insulting to infer that Nevada’s long-term unemployed are millionaires and drug addicts.

This particular constituent is an older woman with lots of office experience who is having trouble matching the keyboard and computer skills of the young. State and county jobs she applies for—you know, the ones with health care—attract literally hundreds of people, even for entry-level jobs. She usually makes it to the second interview, but in the end loses out to younger, more adaptable people with, presumably, fewer health care needs. Her experience is validated by national statistics that show those over 45 have a much harder time re-entering the workforce.

She’s understandably frustrated at federal and state job training agencies that offer her a typing test to document her skill level but won’t help her enroll in a class to improve her typing speed.

She’s too proud to apply for food stamps but is worried about losing all her assets that have taken a lifetime to build because the Republicancontrolled Congress has decided she’s not worthy of extended benefits.

She can’t understand why the U.S. House member she voted for has no empathy for her plight, in a state with record-breaking unemployment.

Nevada Republican Sen. Dean Heller was a primary sponsor of S. 2148, a bill that would have extended emergency unemployment assistance to the long-term unemployed retroactively to last December when they ran out, and Congress refused to act.

However, Speaker John Boehner, an Ohio Republican, quashed any possibility of that bill passing last month when he declared it dead until “Washington Democrats” agreed to rewrite the bill to gut other programs and “guarantee” job growth.

Despite polls that show 68 percent of Americans support extending unemployment benefits, Republican congressmembers in safe districts like Amodei’s are unlikely to respond, given their fear of a primary from the right. Heller might need moderate and independent voters, but all Amodei needs to be concerned with is a challenge from within his own party.

This political stalemate leaves the unemployed 50-ish woman in Reno infuriated and disillusioned with a government that has left her adrift at an age when she should be earning her highest salary in anticipation of retirement in her next decade. She’s had no income since Dec. 28, 2013, and would take any kind of relevant job. She believes she is being blamed for a societal catastrophe.

She feels betrayed by a representative who says he’s “concerned” but is unwilling to act on her behalf.

He’s too worried about those unemployed millionaires and drug addicts. Ω

Big brother’s warm, friendly hand Since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, civil liberties have been shredded. Every war brings violations of civil liberties.

What is doubly dangerous is that now we do not even have declared wars, but rather vaguely defined “hostilities.”

On Dec. 31, 2011 the National by Brendan Defense Authorization Act was Trainor passed by Congress and signed into law. The law codifies a practice started by George W. Bush and continued by President Obama that allows for indefinite detention, without a trial, of “covered persons,” including U. S. citizens, picked up anywhere in the world, and accused of having ties to Al Qaeda or associated organizations. No trial, no habeas corpus, just a black hole for years or decades. Remember, a War on Terror is a war on a tactic.

There is no government to surrender, no end in sight, until some magical mystical day when there is no one left evil, or desperate enough, to plant a homemade bomb on some distant Third World road.

Worse, the law is cleverly worded so that there is real concern that it could even apply to U.S. citizens in America. George W. Bush indefinitely detained U.S. citizen Jose Padilla for years before getting around to giving him a trial. When Obama signed the NDAA into law, he said he thought it could apply to U.S. citizens in the U.S., but promised he would not do that. That is nice of him, but a veto would have been nicer. Perhaps he had a reason to want the bill signed to give him legal cover for those indefinitely detained in Guantanamo Bay. Lists have surfaced from government sources naming all manner of activity suspicious.

Federal and state organizations under the large “security” umbrella have named putting a Ron Paul bumper sticker on your car, paying cash for a hotel room, stockpiling food, supporting the Constitution, even standing at a bus stop as reasons to be watched. War, er, hostilities, is the health of the state.

An informed, active citizenry is the last hope to push back against the emerging police state.

Here in Nevada that pushback is coming from PANDA, or People Against the NDAA. PANDA’s objective is to have local and state governments issue laws and resolutions against the NDAA. In the last legislative session, a bill was drafted that would make it a felony for a federal or state official to implement the most controversial sections of the NDAA. Called the Nevada Liberty Preservation Act, it was an encouraging example of how Southern Nevada liberal Democrats and Northern Nevada constitutional conservative Republicans can unite to protect state citizens from overreaching federal encroachment. During the heady days of the Sagebrush Rebellion in Nevada, a bill making it a misdemeanor for federal agents to perform an “official act” on the disputed federal lands was almost passed. Second Amendment Preservation Acts that criminalize

federal enforcement of certain gun control laws are another example.

Call it nullification, or simply call it the assertion of state power under the 10th Amendment, this tactic is becoming more frequent as the federal government oversteps its constitutional boundaries.

Unfortunately, liberty died in committee in the last legislative session.

PANDA is now taking the cause to local government. Both the Washoe County Commission and the Reno City Council have been approached to pass resolutions against NDAA. So far, both have declined, but the door is still open. On March 26, PANDA made another pitch to the Reno City Council, pointing out that similar resolutions have been passed in Idaho. Whooping cough returns to Nevada As the anti-vaccine movement surges, so are more than a dozen maladies once thought vanquished. The Council on Foreign Relations has created a world map showing the rise of cerebrospinal meningitis, chicken pox, cholera, diphtheria, rotavirus, measles, mumps, polio, rubella, whooping cough, mumps, streptococcus suis and other lethal but preventable maladies in every nation.

Until recently, only 30 to 40 cases of whooping cough were reported annually in the United States. Twenty-two cases were reported in Nevada alone in 2013. Whooping cough kills about 300,000 people on earth each year. In the U.S. before vaccinations, about 9,000 people died annually. Infants are especially susceptible because they are not completely shielded until they’ve received their three doses of the vaccine, but these days, adults are also at risk because they have not been getting booster shots.

In Utah and California, it’s measles that is rising. In the 1920s the death rate for measles sufferers was about 30 percent, but with vaccinations, by this century it had dropped to less than a percentage point—three deaths per thousand cases of measles.

The anti-vaccine movement was fueled by a fraudulent 1998 study

by Andrew Wakefield and other scientists in the British journal Lancet that alleged a link between autism and vaccines. On the strength of that study, U.S. celebrities like Jim Carrey, Jenny McCarthy and Robert Kennedy Jr. began campaigning against vaccinations.

Investigations later linked the study to lawsuits against vaccine manufacturers and found flawed research procedures. Wakefield was barred from the practice of medicine because of “serious and wide-ranging findings” of misconduct. RFK Jr. wrote lengthy articles, for Salon and Rolling Stone, both of which were later repudiated by the publications and removed from their websites.

Critics widened their criticism to vaccinations generally, though there is no serious science supporting their view.

Koch Bros. vs. labor unions In a recent letter to the editor of the Reno Gazette-Journal, reader George Wooster of Dayton wrote in response to U.S. Sen. Harry Reid’s criticism of the Koch brothers’ pouring corporate money into U.S. political campaigns. “I wonder if he and the Democratic Party would have more credibility if they were to mention that the Koch brothers are outspent in political contributions by no less than 11 labor unions as well as George Soros,” Wooster wrote.

Wooster named 10 unions and ActBlue, a Democratic fund-raising committee founded by two computer executives. He cited figures from the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP) as his source in comparing the spending of the two brothers with the spending of ten labor unions, ActBlue and Soros. However, when we checked the figures from the same CRP cited by Wooster, we found that unions are not really in the same league with business money.

“The broadest classification of political donors separates them into business, labor, or ideological interests,” CRP reports.

“Whatever slice you look at, business interests dominate, with an overall advantage over organized labor of about 15-to-1. Even among PACs [political action committees]—the favored means of delivering funds by labor unions—business has a more than 3-to-1 fundraising advantage. In soft money, the ratio is nearly 17-to-1.

“An important caveat must be added to these figures: ‘business’ contributions from individuals are based on the donor’s occupation/ employer. Since nearly everyone works for someone, and since union affiliation is not listed on FEC reports, totals for business are somewhat overstated, while labor is understated. Still, the base of large individual donors is predominantly made up of business executives and professionals.”

As for Soros, the same Center for Responsive Politics cited by Wooster found that Koch Industries invested $5,938,993 (83 percent going to Republicans) in PAC spending from 1989 to 2010 and found Soros Fund Management spending nothing. On 527 Group contributions, 2001 to 2010, Koch Industries spent $574,998 and Soros Fund spent nothing. On lobbying expenses, 1998 to 2010, Koch Industries spent $50,972,700, and Soros Fund spent $12.790,000.

ActBlue spending in the 2012 election cycle was $147,200,000, according to CRP.

Clout Big endorsements can reduce voter choices On March 30, the Reno Gazette-Journal ran a long story on the front page of its “In-depth” section. In letters by more than an inch high, a quote Dennis Myers appeared over a color photo of Republican district attorney candidate Chris Hicks: “I strive to be my own man.”

That striving, however, did not exclude Hicks’ use of endorsements from a lot of big names—the mayors of Reno and Sparks, sheriff of Washoe County, the incumbent and two former district attorneys, three state senators, developers and casino executives—to scare off

On March 1, Assemblymember Lucy Flores announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor. The news release on her announcement, issued by the Nevada Democratic Party’s publicist rather than her own campaign, arrived in the email

in-boxes of reporters around the state at 3:40 p.m.

At 3:41 there also arrived an endorsement of Flores by U.S. Sen. Harry Reid.

At 3:42 came an endorsement from Nevada Democratic Party chair Roberta Lange.

At 3:45 it was U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford, followed at 3:46 by U.S. Rep. Dina Titus.

Bringing up the rear at 3:47 was Nevada Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick.

All this Democratic firepower sent out a pretty strong message that party leaders didn’t want anyone getting in Flores’ way, and the message was received. The only other Democrat to enter the race by the filing deadline was a defeated Nye County Commission candidate who was convicted of battery in Pahrump in 2010.

These kinds of arrangements and anointments are becoming more and more common in politics, and the public pays a price.

“Elections are all about choice, so in the absence of choice there is less interest, no real engagements, no real dialogue in the campaign,” said political analyst Fred Lokken.

In addition, he said, primaries are often regarded as a way of getting people interested in the year’s campaign, so quashing intra-party competition depresses turnout.

“Primaries get people thinking about the election,” he said. “You boost interest. So you diminish interest in the primary, and there’s no reason to show up, because contests are missing from the ballot.”

Asked if these machinations are anti-democratic, Flores said, “Well, all I can say is that I worked very, very hard for those endorsements. And anyone else in Nevada was certainly welcome to work as hard as I did for those endorsements. That was not something that happened overnight. I had been considering this office since early last year, and I started the vetting process for myself to assure this was something that I could win. It took quite a lot of conversation with Senator Reid, with the speaker, to insure that my Democratic colleagues also—I went to every single one of my Democratic colleagues in the Assembly and asked for their support. None of this was presumed on my part. So I worked very, very hard for those endorsements and, again, I didn’t preclude anyone else from working just as hard as I did for those endorsements.”

Legitimacy These arrangements are a doubleedged sword. There is a danger that Flores ends up looking like a creation of the Mount Rushmore lineup of leaders behind her, lacking independence and identity— which undercuts the life narrative she has been using of fighting up from a teen gang to law school and the legislature. At the same time, those leaders bring her legitimacy and fund-raising ability.

“The notion of being associated with the establishment doesn’t play with voters like it used to,” Lokken said. “On the other hand, you get immediate credibility. It builds name recognition. Lucy Flores may be unknown, but her backers aren’t—‘I don’t know you, Lucy, but I like my legislator who is supporting you.’” (See page 35 for an interview with Flores.)

Arrangements that avoid rough primaries can also serve a purpose for the candidates and the political parties.

“When [Dean] Heller first ran for the house he had a five-way race in the primary, and it was an absolute bloodbath,” Lokken said. “He got past the gate but was drained of all his resources before the general election.”

In Heller’s case, it was not a big problem because the district was safe Republican, but not all candidates have that kind of good fortune. In competitive districts, that kind of primary race can hurt.

“You want to control the event so you don’t burn through these resources,” Lokken said. “You lock down endorsements early on, get them committed and freeze our competition.”

In this particular year, there is another consideration in Flores’ case. The Democratic Party could not scrape up a major candidate for governor.

“Given that they had to give up the governorship, it’s important that the Democrats position someone like Flores,” Lokken said.

These kinds of arrangements don’t always work. Gov. Brian Sandoval handpicked Clark County Sen. Mark Hutchison to be the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor. If Sandoval expected that to close out the contest, he

was disappointed. Former senator Sue Lowden quickly jumped into the race and into a 14–point lead over Hutchison in an opinion survey, though that lead was probably built on name recognition, a fragile reed in politics.

When Tim Kuzanek announced his candidacy for Washoe County sheriff, he listed the incumbent sheriff, mayors of Reno and Sparks, the county district attorney, and two former sheriffs as supporters. That didn’t stop Nevada Highway Patrol officer Chuck Allen and three other candidates from getting into the race.

The backing from those prominent figures will, however, likely help Kuzanek withstand ups and downs on the campaign trail pretty well. What someone once called “the magic stamp of legitimacy” is helpful when things start going wrong in politics. Ω

That old television, computer, fax machine or other electronic device that’s been collecting dust in your garage can be recycled at this year’s Reno Earth Day celebration on April 27, free of cost. by Sage Leehey The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the electronic waste— or e-waste—recycling ending at 2 p.m. This aspect of Reno Earth Day is s age l@ important this year because other e-waste recycling events that typically news review.c om occur around this time are not happening this year.

“We pretty much always have a recycling-type thing in the Reno High parking lot every year,” event organizer Heather Howell said. “This year we’re doing the e-waste with TVs also, which a lot of e-wastes don’t do.

And then paper recycling and they’re also taking bicycles for Kiwanis.”

The Reno High School parking lot will have a recycling hub designed for the convenience of Earth Day-goers—or anyone who wants or needs to recycle.

“We’ll have it set up where they can pull in, drop off and then park in the lot,” event organizer Anastacia Sullivan said.

“Or they don’t even have to park, they can drop their stuff off and then go do something else,” Howell said.

E-waste is accepted at some electronics stores, like Best Buy, and other locations throughout the year, but there are typically certain restrictions and fees. Most e-waste recycling is done at events throughout the year put on by different organizations in the area though. Computer Corps in Carson City also accepts electronic waste all the time, but they cannot accept televisions from individuals regularly.

“Even e-waste events that are free usually make you pay for TVs, so I think we’ll have a big bin just for all the TVs people bring,” Howell said.

Sullivan said she wants everyone to be able to enjoy and participate in all aspects of the day. She’s also happy to be able to accept e-waste for recycling because she doesn’t want it to end up in the trash or dump.

“Part of Earth Day is that we want it to be accessible regardless of what you’re coming from,” Sullivan said. “Ideally, it would be great if there was a monthly e-waste drop off, so that it’s not something where you just save up your junk and maybe you catch this for the year, but that you can dispose of it anytime properly.”

She also added that Computer Corps will reuse much of the e-waste to benefit families, schools and communities and provide them access to computers. Some other electronic gear will also be accepted.

“And I think this list doesn’t cover everything. … Because they [Computer Corps] will take everything,” Sullivan said. “I mean, they can take a do-hickey from anything and make it into something.” Ω

While, beginning in December, we requested information from all Nevada state and local law enforcement agencies, a few have not responded. However, because of redundancies in the way the requests were made—and use of media sources—we believe this information is fairly comprehensive. Since Native American tribes do not fall under Nevada public records laws, not all homicides on Native American land are likely included. This dataset also does not include all homicides by officers of federal agencies.

n this, the second part of our six-part Fatal Encounters series, we look at the actual numbers of people killed during interactions with police. This includes incidents of people shot, killed by vehicles, tasered, suicides or beaten to death. Sometimes the causes are uncertain, for example, Walter Inzer, an intoxicated 81-year-old man in Reno, died in the paddy wagon. Since no central government agency collects or databases this data, this is the most comprehensive dataset for incidents of police-involved homicide that has ever been collected in the state of Nevada.

ace Herndon is a hard guy to feel sorry for. He was a tweeker, a meth addict, a junkee. He was also a thief, a violent four-time felon.

He spent time in prison, sentenced for holding a stolen AK-47. He’d attacked police. All you have to do is look at the mug shot that ran in all the local media to see he was about as nasty an individual as one would care to meet.

Herndon must have been a bad seed. Born on March 1, 1971, he’d begun his run-ins with police by 1991. He met his clichéd end in a hail storm of bullets on the Friday afternoon of May 18, 2012—a beautiful spring afternoon, 73 degrees, blue skies and no breeze.

Reno police did the deed, but it’s not hard to imagine that if it wasn’t them, it would have been some other police agency. He didn’t know it, but he already had a date with destiny, as an off-duty detective from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office had gotten word (apparently from a “friend” of Herndon’s) that Herndon was on his way to exchange a stolen Pontiac Grand Am for $100 and an ounce of meth. The deputy had communicated this information with his supervisor and the Reno Police Department.

A Reno detective, Jason Daniels, intercepted him before he reached the Reno Royal Motel on West Street between Third and Fourth streets. Daniels caught up with him on Second Street heading toward Arlington Avenue. With Daniels behind him, Herndon turned south. Daniels called for backup, and soon officers Joey Deal, Jason Stallcop and Adam Blount were also on Herndon’s tail.

Herndon must have been freaking. In fact, his shadows could see how agitated he was, either moving or hiding something while he drove. The stolen, maroon Grand Am had serious problems.

Its front was bashed in, and it had already died

once on Herndon and the friends he was with, Julie Dempsey and Ken Norton. He made it about 20 feet west on Court Street before it died again, then another hundred feet before he pulled behind a parked car. Suddenly, he was boxed in by vehicles, sirens and lights.

“Reno Police Department; please show me your hands,” Daniels ordered, according to Washoe County sheriff’s deputy Joe Bowden’s report. “He [Daniels] noticed the female front passenger and male rear passenger put their hands up; however, the driver (Jace Herndon) did not put his hands up. Detective Daniels was concerned because it was a stolen vehicle, the driver was not complying with orders, his hands could not be seen, and he had previously seen him moving in the front of the vehicle and that he possibly was in possession of a weapon.

Detective Daniels also noticed the other officers were also yelling ‘Police,’ and, ‘Show me your hands.’

“Herndon then stated, ‘Fuck you, you’re going to have to shoot me.’”

were seven intact bullets and four fragments consistent with .40 or 9 mm bullets taken from his body. It seems every bullet fired found a home.

In the car, two knives and a baseball batshaped club were found. One of the knives was designed to look like a revolver with brown wooden grips, a trigger guard and a hammer and a flip-out blade.

He’d literally brought knives to a gunfight.

Herndon seems like one cliché after another.

A bad guy comes to a bad end, betrayed by a friend. A junkie gets his just desserts. But peeking through the police and media reports with the two mug shots, that gaunt, gaunt junkie face and the much younger one with the blackened eye is the mystery, the unknowable back story of a guy who wasn’t all bad.

Surely, his two children, a boy and a girl, must have loved him.

He had other family, too.

He had a wife. He laid tile for a living. He had friends—he had two with him when he was killed.

It’s been said that the three deadliest words in the English language are “Go ahead, shoot.”

Herndon once again showed himself the norm that proves the rule. On the crime scene, there were 11 empty casings found near the suspect vehicle, nine of which were .40 caliber and two were 9mm. There was also one live 9mm casing found, two intact bullets and one bullet jacket.

Dr. Ellen Clark of the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office found 15 bullet wounds on Herndon’s body. They included trauma to the chest, abdomen, right back shoulder, front right chest, left upper arm, left elbow and left index finger and back of left hand. There

That’s a church that specializes in people who crave redemption from drugs and alcohol.

Hard to say whether Jace Herndon was on his way to becoming a better man. But if he wasn’t trying, why was he in church? What is nearly certain is that he was on his way to a hundred bucks and an ounce of meth in a stolen car.

Pastor Rost was a bit taken aback to hear Jace Herndon’s name after almost two years.

“I loved Jace,” he said. “He was a good brother in the Lord. [After the incident], he was horribly misrepresented in the media. Jace had been a member of our fellowship for about three,

three and a half years, during which time he led worship. He also taught several Bible studies. He headed up several different outreaches, mostly musical outreaches. He was the lead singer of a local Christian band named Risen. Played biker outreach events, played park outreach events, played concerts at various churches. He ministered up at Jan Evans Juvenile Facility for a while. He did a lot of good things around the community.”

Herndon was struggling with his addiction, Rost said, trying to be the man that he knew he was, and to come up and out of the garbage that he’d allowed to once again entangle him.

“For several months before the incident happened, he’d give me a call, and I’d go meet with him wherever he was at, whether it was a motel room or a park. We’d pray, and he’d bare his heart, tell me the struggle that was going on, always asking for prayer.

The situation that he found himself in at the very end just really shocked me. I know he had a past.

There was nothing unfactual in regard to the record, but the man that he was, I have a hard time reconciling with the way the situation went down.”

And it’s those questions combined with the haunted look in those shrunken and drug-addicted eyes in the mug shots that make it a little easier to feel sorry for a man who could have been something besides a cliché and a statistic.

Six days after the death, on May 24, 2012, Washoe County District Attorney Richard Gammick ruled the homicide justified, and this is one where few, if any, would second-guess the determination.

hen I heard the phrase, “It’s like licking mayonnaise out of steel wool,” I knew the set was terrible. It was rough from the start, with all of the dick and blowjob jokes I’ve come to despise in my time frequenting the Reno comedy scene, but that right there put a nail in the coffin for me.

It was a cunnilingus joke with a hint of racism. Obviously, I was not among my people. The crowd, up to that point, had been fairly accepting of the comedian on stage, chuckling a little in acknowledgment, as if to say, “Yes, I have had a blowjob before and yes, they can sometimes get awkward.”

After the mayonnaise/steel wool comment, though, silence took over, punctuated only by the guffaws of a few tasteless patrons and the uncomfortable grumblings of people who did not appreciate the line crossed. The comedian on stage quickly recovered to end his set on some joke about blowjob sounds resembling sound effects from Mario Bros. and made a quick exit from the stage. He was cheered heartily by the audience—whether it was because they were glad to see him go or because they actually liked him, I am not in a position to say.

“Here, the crowds can be really tough some of the time, and that means local comedians are always really pushing to write something fresh and good,” said Charlie Woodman, a local comedian who frequents many of the open mic nights around town.

“I don’t want to say it’s a hostile environment or anything—most local comedians or frequent audience members are really nice and supportive—but you aren’t going

to get many pity laughs, and that keeps people working hard.”

Why are the local audiences around town tough on comedians?

“Reno audiences don’t know how to [react to] comedy,”says Matt Wiegand, a host of open mic nights around town. “They don’t know how to laugh when they are supposed to because oftentimes the group will all nod and agree with a joke instead of laugh, because nobody wants to stand out.”

Open minds, open mics Wiegand organizes and hosts open mic nights weekly at Wildflower Village, 4395 W. Fourth St., and Great Basin Brewery, 846 Victorian Ave., in Sparks. And in general, it seems the audiences who gather at open mic nights in Reno are tough to get laughing. From 3rd Street Bar to The Waterfall, from Wildflower Village to Great Basin Brewery, comedians generally face an audience that doesn’t respond to every joke. This stoic nature though, is not exactly a bad thing for the performers around town.

One of my personal favorite venues for open mic comedy in Reno is the Golden Rose Café at Wildflower Village. The intimate setting makes the audience feel closer and more involved with the performers on stage. The comedians there will take a run at making everyday life comical while peppering the relatively wholesome subject matter with a healthy smattering of f-bombs. And every once in a while, a comic comes up who hits every joke, seeming to float through the set on the back of the laughter-filled room.

The atmosphere of the little café made me feel as if I was sitting in someone’s living room, workshopping with the comics. If a joke falls flat, the performer might just nod, smile and move on to another, with a few added profanities for transition’s sake. The candid responses provided by the crowd give the comedian immediate and direct feedback about every joke. Chances are, if it flopped the first time and went poorly the second time, there won’t be a repeat and the patrons of these shows can look forward to something new to shoot down.

Downtown, 3rd Street Bar has been running an open mic with growing success for the last several years. While the atmosphere isn’t quite as intimate, the camaraderie of the comedians takes center stage.

The crowds are a bit more forgiving at 3rd Street Bar. They also seem to be more appreciative of jokes about genitalia and cunnilingus, even if I don’t appreciate those ones as much. Here, you can often hear laughs that drown out all other voices in the room as fellow comics rush to the aid of any peer who might be floundering on stage at the moment.

It’s a slow pay off, returning to these open mics weekly. At first, I felt I was getting a bunch of jokes for the least common denominator, but over time, I could see the confidence build on the regular performers’ faces as they honed their attempts into real comedy.

Patrick Shillito, the host at 3rd Street Bar says that this supportive environment, among the comedians at least, hasn’t always been the case.

“I think the Reno comedy scene has definitely changed for the better in the last few years, as there are more opportunities for dedicated

individuals to not only nurture and be nurtured by a constructive, communicative environment, but also practice their craft,” he says.

Instead of fractional groups of comedians, working in small sections of the city to make comedy for themselves and each other, now they are more often joining forces, focusing on growing into their roles as comedians and putting efforts toward developing an environment in which comedy and comedians alike can thrive.

Aside from the numerous open mic nights that can be found around town, there are projects and showcases cropping up all over the place, the byproduct of the collaborative atmosphere in the smaller comedy venues around town.

Last month, several of the more active comedians in town put on the Erotic Fan Fiction Showcase: Cartoon Edition at The Waterfall at 134 W. Second St. It featured readings from erotic fan fiction penned by eight different comics. Because of the base developed at all of the different open mics around Reno, the turnout exceeded the expectations of the organizers.

Shillito has also been organizing monthly comedy showcases at the Knitting Factory that feature both local comedians and up and coming acts from out of town.

We may not want to sit through as many blowjob jokes as we do, but one thing we do have is a dedicated bunch of comedians who are working to put Reno on the comedy map, which is worth something. “[Comedy] can be vulgar and stupid sometimes, but it can also be really heartwarming,” says local comedian Charlie Woodman.

As heartwarming as blowjobs can be. Ω

She’s one of three artists currently showing their Bachelor of Fine Arts exhibitions at the University of Nevada, Reno’s Student Galleries South. The other two artists are sculptors Michelle Laxalt and Lee Stokes.

White’s exhibition is titled Comfort is Control, and it explores control—specifically the issue of control between artists

and subjects. In the paintings, the control is in the hands of the painters, where it’s expected to be. She controls the brush. But for the second half of her exhibition, White made small brush-and-ink drawings based on other people's self-portraits submitted to a website she set up. The drawings have the same meticulous linework as her paintings, but the compositions and subjects are like the “selfie” photos that often clutter social media. She solicited for submission on social media and through fliers distributed on campus. Some of the subjects are people she doesn’t know. For White, giving up some control of composition and subject allowed her to happily move out of her comfort zone as an artist.

Across the gallery from White’s work is Laxalt’s Give and Take, an exhibition of sculptures that are primarily ceramic. The sculptures depict small, feminine—though vaguely androgynous—figures of indeterminate age. One sculpture, the proverbial title cut, “Give and Take (Breath-Catchers and Memories),” depicts a figure dragging a net full of star-shaped ceramic pieces. The

ceramic stars are cast from origami stars made partially by blowing breath into the paper forms.

“I like to say that it’s like fortified breath, because in order to make these forms inflate you have to breathe into them,” said Laxalt. “I find that really romantic. That’s why they’re called breath-catchers.”

Scattered around the figure are white objects—Laxalt calls them “nebulous, ambiguous entities”—that look like either marble boulders or wads of crumpled paper.

They could be substantive or fragile. For Laxalt, these entities represent memories.

Deeper into the gallery, partly removed from the other two exhibitions, is Light Caught Bending, Stokes’ exhibition. The

exhibition is right on the line between a collection of standalone sculptures and a fully immersive installation. There are a half-dozen or so pod-like shapes, each hung from the ceiling, many of the connected to one another by umbilical cord-like ropes. Each is made from a variety of materials—glass, metal and plastics. Each is unique—some seem like giant cocoons from a science fiction movie.

One is like a lonely lighthouse lantern.

They almost seem like eggs, fragile yet powerful.

There’s only one external light on in the gallery and the sculptures themselves are electric and emit a faint glow, like life developing inside. Deep in the gallery space, with the low lighting, the environment is intimate and hushed, like a nursery or a womb.

“We all find common ground in that we are reflecting on personal and autobiographical experiences, and we’re all doing with figuration and femininity in very distinct and independent ways,” said Laxalt. Ω

A plain pizza is crust, oregano and tomato sauce with a little bit of grated pecorino Romano cheese sprinkled on. Mozzarella is considered to be a topping; a customer who wants it must ask for it. What makes New Haven-style pizza distinct is its thin crust, characteristic charring, chewy texture, and limited use of melting cheeses.

This is a family business that started at the North Shore of Lake Tahoe in 1986, spent a few years in Truckee, and then, a few months ago, moved to Reno. Dad Andy Peluso, the pie master, came to Connecticut from Italy when he was five, and has carried on the family tradition. Son Carmine, a pedigreed chef, has a degree from Johnson and Wales, a prestigious culinary school. He won a full scholarship as a senior at North Tahoe High School in a national culinary competition in 2003. He's a master of doughs.

For the most part, the pies and sandwiches are take-out, either baked or bake-at-home. There’s a small eat-in area, but no table service. It’s a decent menu with 18 pies ranging from 9 inches to 16 inches ($6.35-$19.85) and 9-inch subs and grinders ($7.50-$8).

By-the-slice, cheese pizza is $3.75 with toppings $.50 each. They offer a couple of salads ($5), garlic bread ($4), Brushchetta ($5.75), Italian cheese melt ($5), and chicken wings (6/$6-12/$11). The crusts and

sandwich breads are a family secret, and the best breads I have ever eaten in Reno.

The pastrami melt ($8) and the meat was generous, moist and flavorful with light mustard and mayo on Carmine’s bread. This is a yeast-leavened dough that takes him 24 hours to make resulting in food artistry and James Beardian flavor. I tried half a meatball with Mozzarella and the house sauce ($7.50), and a capri veggie with artichoke hearts, bell peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, lemon parmigiana dressing and provolone warmed ($7.50). (I do not like bell peppers. They give me heartburn.) But these were first roasted with some olive oil, and I found them edible with no problems.

The sandwich was full of flavors with a little saltiness and citrus finish. The meatball sandwich was a masterpiece.

My pizza parade started with a Clams Casino with roasted red peppers, bacon, fresh garlic, parsley purée, light red sauce and Romano and Mozzarella cheeses.

Clams Casino was originally developed in 1917 in the Little Casino in Narragansett, R.I. It had a slightly spicy savor flavor. This pie was every bit that and more with the purée that added a zest to the layers of savory, salty, and hint of tomato. The cheeses added the body to hold everything together on the superb crust.

Then, I had a Florentine chicken with spinach, garlic, lemon parmigiana base. Parmigiana is an Italian dish made with a shallow or deep-fried sliced filling, layered with cheese and tomato sauce, then baked. Romano and Mozzarella cheeses were next. The acidity flowed into the saltiness and the spinach helped marry the cheese with the fowl and another adventure in flavors was born. An offering of pastas is coming in the near future.

They snuck in a cannoli ($1.50) and their filling was a fresh ricotta, orange zest, vanilla in a light shell, not the hard type, with pistachios at one end and chocolate chips at the other.

In Italian families, food is about more than simply filling your belly. It gives a sense of shared culture among friends and neighbors. Apizza brings that tradition to Reno. Ω

Bust a Cap Captain America: The Winter Soldier A few years back, I wrote that Captain America: The First Avenger, while having a slick retro look, came up short on “action pow.”

includes watching Star Wars and Star Trek, trying Thai food and listening to Nirvana, and he’s attempting to settle into a world after being frozen for 50 years.

Of course, he’s not going to be able to just kick back and relax because evil still exists below the United States’ shimmering surface, and governmental wrongdoings are going to challenge Cap’s ability to remain loyal to the country he symbolizes.

After an attempt on the life of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson just Samuel L. Jacksoning it like only Samuel L. Jackson can!), attention is called to the likes of somebody called the Winter Soldier, a fighting machine with powers similar to Cap and an identity that won’t be revealed in this review.

Cap’s mission eventually leads him to the rediscovery of HYDRA, the evil movement started back in the Nazi days, now controlling

members of the government. With Black Widow (Johansson) and Falcon (a well cast Anthony Mackie) at his side, Cap looks to take down HYDRA, kick the Winter Soldier’s ass, and possibly work in a date somewhere during the whole mess.

New to the Marvel universe would be Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce. Mr. Redford gets a chance to do some new things in this prominently featured role, the details of which will not be revealed here, either.

(Damn—I can’t really write a lot about this movie without ruining things.) After his bravura performance in last year’s All is Lost, and his badass work here, Redford is experiencing a nice late career renaissance.

Directors Anthony and Joe Russo, whose past works include mostly TV shows and the horrible You, Me and Dupree, prove to be surprisingly successful when it comes to piloting a huge summer blockbuster behemoth.

Their action scenes crackle with a zippy, kinetic energy, especially during the Cap and Winter Soldier smackdowns.

They also do well with the visual effects, with the return of the flying aircraft carriers and a firecracker of a finale featuring crumbling buildings and fights upon the aforementioned carriers falling from the sky.

As always, a bunch of folks got up and left before all of the post-credit action played out.

People, never leave a Marvel movie until the screen goes permanently black.

There’s one “during the credits” sequence that occurs after a few minutes of letters on the screen, and another “post credits” sequence before everything goes dark. I would say about 20 percent of the audience got up and left before the “during credits” sequence, but then a solid 50 percent more left before the final bit.

Audiences are learning, but they still haven’t quite figured it out. Stay in your seats until the dudes with trashcans enter the theater!

So, the summer movie season officially gets off to solid Marvel start with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy, which looks like a lot of fun, are still coming, so there’s plenty of potential Marvel goodness in the near future. Ω

Afflicted

I’ve had it up to here with found-footage horror films, but directors Derek Lee and Clif Prowse are onto something here with this double-edged nailbiter that energizes the found-footage genre, and another horror genre I won’t give away in this review. Lee and Prowse playing versions of themselves, are all psyched to be taking a worldwide trip together, documenting it on film. Derek has been diagnosed with some sort of brain problem, but the duo soldier on anyway, determined to get Derek hooked up with a new woman in a strange European club. He strikes gold, it seems, and brings a pretty woman home for a night of troublemaking. Clif busts into Derek’s room to discover him beaten and bloody, with no woman in sight. The two shrug the incident off, but Derek develops some strange, viral symptoms in the coming days that not only threaten the sanctity of their trip, but Derek’s life. There are some genuinely freaky moments in this film, and some solid special effects. It’s a true sign that the foundfootage horror genre has run its course that this film didn’t get a large theatrical release, instead settling for a VOD and iTunes campaign. In many ways, this film stands as the best horror film in the found footage genre.

It’s not perfect, feeling a bit like a retread of Chronicle and Quarantine at times. But Lee and Prowse have a certain spark to their filmmaking style that keeps their movie consistently intense and creepy. The film leaves itself open for a sequel, and I wouldn’t mind seeing some further scary adventures by these two. (Available for rent on VOD, iTunes and Amazon.com.)

Divergent

Shailene Woodley stars as Beatrice, a member of an alleged post-apocalyptic society where people are divided up into factions: Abnegation (The Selfless), Erudite (The Intelligent), Amity (The Peaceful), Candor (The Honest) and Dauntless (The Brave).

This is another tween action movie based on young adult novels (written by Veronica Roth), and it’s a super dud. Directed by Neil Burger, the whole enterprise is remarkably lacking in tension, humor, creativity, originality and focus. Kate Winslet shows up as Jeanine, an Erudite with a mysterious whiff of evil. I imagine she’s the Darth Vader of this silly saga. Miles Teller (Woodley’s The Spectacular Now costar) gets what feels like a tacked on role as Peter, a member of Dauntless who gives Beatrice a hard time.

It’s hard to watch these two very talented performers slumming in such stereotypical, unexciting parts. It’s a muddled affair that looks downright bad at times. It’s a tween wannabe franchise completely lacking teeth with a good central female star in the lead. I have faith that Woodley can pull this one out of the fire and make it worthwhile in future installments. I also have faith that I never want to see this flat first chapter again, unless I have a really bad cold and need something to knock me out.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Writer-director Wes Anderson does it again with another wholly unique, beautiful, quirky movie that could’ve only been made by him. In a performance that must be remembered come awards time, Ralph Fiennes is magically hilarious as M. Gustave, the concierge at the infamous fictional hotel named in the film’s title.

Gustave has a penchant for older woman, much older woman, and his life takes a drastic turn when he is suspected in the murder of an elderly lover (Tilda Swinton in super heavy makeup). Stolen art, scary train rides and a high speed chase on skis ensue, with Anderson even employing stop motion animation at times, as he did with Fantastic Mr. Fox. Supporting performances by Jeff Goldblum, Adrien Brody, Jude Law, F. Murray Abraham, Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, Saoirse Ronan and many more make this a can’t miss film. There’s something so joyous and fun about the way Anderson makes movies.

This is a remarkable, tremendously enjoyable achievement.

The Lego Movie

Noah

A spectacular magic show with breathtaking new illusions, comedy, beautiful dancers and the rarest exotic cats in the world.

Fast paced, frequently hilarious, and visually fun, this is the sort of movie we’ve come to expect from Pixar, one that appeals to both kids and adults on many levels. It’s also notable that it isn’t a Pixar film, but a product of the still formidable but inconsistent Warner Brothers animation wing.

The plot follows Emmet (Chris Pratt), a “generic” builder as he goes about his homogenized life, building structures under strict deadlines, listening to the same song (Tegan and Sara’s terrific “Everything is Awesome”) every minute of the day, and following the rules of the omnipotent President Business (Will Ferrell). President Business demands conformity in a decidedly socialistic way, but he keeps everybody at bay by promising Taco Tuesdays. Things change instantly when Emmet meets Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), who reveals to Emmet that he’s living in a preprogrammed world, and there’s the possibility for real life beyond its walls (echoes of The Matrix and Terry Gilliam’s Brazil).

Emmet joins forces with Wyldstyle and her extremely cool boyfriend, Batman (Arnett) to take down the establishment and restore freewill. The Lego Movie is a bit exhausting at times, but at least the constant stream of activity is laced with super intelligence rather than bombastic, vapid visuals.

Whether you are religious or not, the Bible is, no doubt, a pretty sweet platform for over-the-top cinema. With Noah, director Darren Aronofsky has concocted a totally crazy, darkly nasty disaster film befitting those few pages in the book of Genesis. In his best performance to date, Russell Crowe plays the title character, a good, passionate man in a not particularly good time. The people outside of Noah’s family circle have turned Earth into a place of carnivorous debauchery. “The Creator” (this film’s go-to name for God) intends to wipe all humanity off the face of the Earth with a great flood, and Noah is tasked with saving all of the innocent animals on a huge ship to be built by him, with the help of large rock monsters. The movie, as spectacle, is quite good, although its CGI has a few moments of weakness. The flood itself is a frightening sequence, with a horrifying moment involving screaming people outside of the ark getting washed off a big rock by waves. I’m actually surprised this movie pulled a PG-13 rating. It struck me, very much, as an R-rated film due to its violence.

Nymphomaniac: Vol. 1

For me, there’s no denying that writer-director Lars von Trier is a true talent. Melancholia, Antichrist and Dancer in the Dark represent some of the best bizarre cinema this side of David Lynch. His other offerings, like Dogville and Breaking the Waves, are not favorites of mine, but I still see them as respectable offerings. But now there is this, a despicably bad attempt at shock cinema that represents the very worst in sensationalistic, lazy-assed filmmaking. The film is about Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) a confessed nymphomaniac found bleeding in the gutter by a kind soul (Stellan Skarsgard) who takes her back to his apartment.

After a cup of tea, Joe starts telling her sad story, a boring framing device that rips off The Princess Bride. Played by Stacy Martin in flashback, we see Joe’s sad, humiliating story as she recounts her outrageous sexual escapades and supposed emotional problems. This movie is hard to watch, featuring nothing that stands out as original or genuinely provocative. It comes off as desperate filmmaking, with von Trier laboring to shock his audience, something never before evident in his prior films. Only Uma Thurman shines as a jilted wife, blistering the screen in what feels like a well-improvised moment. The rest of the movie is just stuff like Christian Slater crapping himself and Shia LaBeouf naked.

A total piece of garbage, and it is only part one of the saga. Part two is coming out right on its heels, so god help us all. (Available for rent on VOD, iTunes and Amazon.com during a limited theatrical run.)

The hit list The Volery You’ve shopped on Craigslist for furniture, apartment rentals, used recreational equipment … but what about people? by Laura Davis We’re not talking the misconnection you had at the grocery store when both your hands simultaneously reached for the same carton of milk.

We mean for more constructive purposes, like, say, a band member.

That’s how the members of local modern rock band The Volery came to find one another, and they stand by the benefits of the online classifieds.

“For one, you don’t know what you’re going to get, which is kind of exciting,” guitarist Eric Grilli explains of the site’s benefits. “You may get an ‘80s [style] guy or you may get a Lanny.”

Luckily, it didn’t take the guys too many auditions to find the shoe that fit—at least when it came to Hoy’s position on the bass. He was the first to respond to the Craigslist ad, and even though he came from a different musical background, having played primarily jazz/funk, they found a way to blend their styles. The vocalist spot however, was a bit trickier.

“We had a lot of unique people, some really different personalities tryout,” Grilli confesses. “One lady sang [the Eagles’] “Desperado” a cappella, and we were just like, ‘Wow, this is going to be different.’

We’d never actually had someone sing to us while we weren’t playing, and it was really weird.”

Ultimately, Craigslist pulled through for the guys once again.

Carey, who had just moved to the area via central California, had left his punk band behind and was looking for another musical outlet, this time outside his former hardcore roots.

“What interested me in these guys is that it was way different from what I had been doing,” Carey says. “This is what comes after punk music. I felt like I needed to do something else, I needed to evolve a little bit as a singer.”

Together, the band has written 10 original tracks, with Grilli, Shultz and Hoy supplying the instrumentals, while Carey takes charge of the lyrics.

They’ve also revamped a couple of numbers from Grilli and Shultz former band, and plan to work in a few covers during their live performances.

Though already attracting attention online, the band has its first show at Ruben’s Cantina on April 26, and Carey already has a couple of songs in mind to be the standouts. “‘Eyes Shut’ for me is the song,” Carey says, explaining he prefers to write from real life experiences.

“It’s about a kid I knew back in California—he was 12 years old and he hung himself. The other song is called ‘The Bitter End,’ it’s about an office romance, but it’s Eric’s guitar riff makes that song special.” Ω

Lanny is Lanny Carey, singer for The Volery, and the most recent Craigslist find for the band. Also on the Craigslist rooster is bassist Mike Hoy, who, with Grilli and drummer Jason Schultz founded the band last summer.

Grilli and Shultz were the only two of the four musicians to have previously met, having played together in a previous band—Driven by Astronauts, a local group which performed for six years before breaking-up last year.

But to give credit where credit is due, Craigslist also played a role in initially getting them together through the local musician want ads.

“Craiglists, for musicians, is pretty chatty,” Shultz confirms. “We all have jobs and families, and [scouting at open mics] takes time. So in some degree, we need [musicians] to come to us, and that’s what Craigslist gives us. We’ll know after an hour or so if it’s a fit.”

Six-month lay away For my New Year’s resolution, I committed to not having sex for the first six months of the year and then another six months from whenever I start dating someone. I’ve never been good at waiting. In fact, the longest I have ever waited is a month and the shortest, and perhaps more typically, is a few hours. In early January, I met a guy, and I’ve been seeing him weekly, though I think I’m being friend-zoned. He is attracted to my polar opposite—short blondes—and has shown no sexual interest in me. Yet, we continue meeting up, and he even buys me dinner and drinks from time to time. Am I wasting my time, or is this how long-lasting, meaningful relationships start—as friends first?

anthropologist John Marshall Townsend suggests that even women with no interest in a relationship that lasts beyond sunup are often surprised to wake up finding themselves pining for more. This is possibly due to the effect of oxytocin, a hormone associated with emotional bonding that’s released in men and women through hugs, cuddling, kissing, and orgasms. In males, however, sexual activity boosts testosterone, which plays the part of riot cop, refusing to let oxytocin up to its receptor. There’s a dearth of studies on these hormones’ effect on post-sex bonding, but experience should tell you that men who have sex before they have any emotional attachment tend to make like the Roadrunner shortly afterward.

The answer isn’t putting an arbitrary time lock on your ladygarden. Instead, try something new—the grownupwanting-a-relationship strategy: prioritizing long-term goals over short-term romps and assessing whether a man is right for you. You need to come up with standards for what you want in a partner and take time getting to know a man. You should also inventory all of his less-than-ideal qualities and see whether you can live with them. Do your homework figuring out a man, and you’ll find you just know when it’s the right time to have sex with him—even without anybody holding Senate hearings on whether to restore visitor access to your vagina. J.K. Rowling finished writing the seventh volume of her Harry Potter books, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The day it was published, it sold millions of copies.

But Rowling had actually written the final chapter of this last book way back in 1990, when she first conceived the story she was to spend the next 17 years working on. She knew the climax right from the beginning. I foresee a similar theme unfolding for you in the coming weeks, Cancerian. As you plot a project you will be developing for a long time to come, you will have a vision of what it will be when it becomes fully mature.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): When you see your

shadow, it’s usually right next to you. It’s there on the ground or floor, a fuzzy black shape that follows you around closely. But today I saw my shadow waving back at me from afar. I was standing on top of a hill, and the sun’s rays created a dusky version of me in the meadow way down below. I think this is a useful metaphor for an opportunity that’s available to you. But what if there’s an exception to this axiom? Let’s call on another American idiom: “when hell freezes over.” It’s another way to say “it probably won’t happen.” But the truth is that now and then, a cold front does indeed sweep through the infernal region, icing its flames.

When that happens, a snowball’s prospects of surviving there improve dramatically. And that’s exactly what I predict will happen for you in the coming week.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Saturn has

been in the sign of Scorpio since October 2012 and will be there until the end of 2014.

(It will make another visit from June to September 2015.) What does that mean? I have a view of Saturn that’s different from many astrologers. They regard it as the planet of limitation, struggle and difficulty. Here’s what I think: While Saturn may push you to be extra tough and work superhard, it also inspires you to cut away extraneous desires and hone in on your deepest purpose. It motivates you to build strong structures that free you to express yourself with maximum efficiency and grace.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

When I took an intermediate painting class in college, our first assignment was to imitate an old master. My choice was the Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-1569). I worked on reproducing his painting “The Fight Between Carnival and Lent” as precisely as I could. It was tedious and liberating. I invoked Bruegel’s spirit and prayed for his guidance. I sank my psyche deeply into his. By the end of the four-week process, I’d learned a lot about painting.

Given the current astrological omens, Sagittarius, I suggest you try something similar.

Presumably, his impediment didn’t affect the quality of his work, but only made it harder to accomplish and required him to spend a lot more time. Is there a fixable limitation on your own ability to achieve your dream, Capricorn? Is there some handicap you could, with effort, overcome? If so, now would be an excellent time to begin.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “The

truth’s superb surprise,” wrote poet Emily Dickinson, may be “too bright for our infirm delight.” Sometimes we’ve got to be careful about articulating what’s really going on.

“The truth must dazzle gradually,” she said.

If it hits us too fast and hard, it may be difficult to digest. So, did Dickinson suggest that we should lie and deceive? No. “Tell all the truth,” she declared, “but tell it slant.”

This is excellent advice for you in the coming days, Aquarius.

my report on your progress. You are not struggling to embody a delusional state of perfection as it is imagined by other people.

Contender Lucy Flores In a column that seemed designed to torpedo her candidacy, a right-wing columnist in Las Vegas nevertheless called Lucy Flores “Nevada’s most interesting candidate.” She has gone from being a car thief on juvenile probation to a member of the Nevada Legislature and is now seeking the office of lieutenant governor. Along the way she received a general equivalency high school diploma, a degree from the University of Southern California and a law degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The lieutenant governor’s functions have been reduced recently, and it’s supposedly a parttime job. It’s not terribly visible.

Why would you want the job?

Because I think that it provides a really amazing opportunity for someone with some energy and vision to do something really great with that office and accomplish expanded things on behalf of Nevada.

How are you going to do it?

Oh, there’s all kinds of ways. You know, not everything requires a law. Sometimes it’s just a matter of being a good facilitator. Sometimes it’s just a matter of being vocal on an issue that maybe your office has absolutely nothing to do with. As an

assemblymember, I never shied away from being vocal on the possibility of immigration reform or the unemployment extension issue or any federal issue, quite frankly, that I thought was something that I thought I should be advocating on behalf of the people of Nevada, whether they were in my district or not, but that I thought that I had the ability and the energy to do. You know, it’s just a matter of someone who, as I said, has some energy and can be innovative with that office. I mean, really, that office is limited by the person who’s in it.

Astute readers will recall that back in February, I wrote that I thought the proposed Keystone XL pipeline project should be denied by President Obama because to do so would royally peeve the supremely evil Koch Brothers, who stand to profit gigantically from business involving Alberta tar sands oil (“Koch this,” RN&R, Feb. 13). Granted, upon reading it I thought my reasoning was a bit specious, maybe even petty. But I still thought it was justified because, well, you know—nuts to the Koch Brothers. FTKB and so forth.

Well, now I want to backtrack and totally flip flop and declare that I don’t give a flaming fig which way the POTUS rolls on this call. I’m now officially on the fence and firmly entrenched on a comfy little spot, mainly because of one rather important reason—the Keystone Pipeline, as of this past January, became fully operational. As in, that sludgy tar sand crude from Alberta is literally flowing into Houston refineries as you read this, at the rate of about OPINION

Do you know what those three pieces of legislation you introduce will do?

No. As I said, it’s very early and so I have some general ideas, some policy areas that I would like to continue working on. Education is one of them. Certainly health care is another great opportunity in Nevada, because we have expanded Medicaid, and we do have our health insurance exchange. Healthcare access is something that I would definitely like to continue working on. Obviously, economic development and tourism are main duties of the lieutenant governor, so certainly continue to work in those areas. Really, connecting all of those policy areas because at the end of the day they’re all tied to economic development and the diversification of the economy and continuing the progress of Nevada. Ω

Do you have any specific ideas of what you’re going to do as lieutenant governor?

Sure. I mean, besides the fact that the lieutenant governor can continue being a policy maker because they get to introduce [three] pieces of legislation, I certainly want to continue my work in the education area. One of my landmark issues this last legislative session was

It’s not arguing about whether or not to build the entire pipeline. The entire pipeline is finished and delivering crude every day to Houston. With XL, that daily capacity would rise from 600,000 barrels to about a million. But, game over for the planet? Well, that might be just a tad melodramatic.

Obama can’t lose here. If he denies, he makes us greenies happy.

Plus, he still gets the pleasure of pissing off the Kochs. If he permits, he gets to look like a job creator (2,000 jobs for about a year) while not doing that much more to mangle the planet. One thing he should do, though, is demand Trans Canada and all the oil pigs put a couple of billion into a pipeline repair fund and monitor the heck out of that thing. Ω

600,000 barrels a day. This new reality has seriously mootified most, if not all, of this issue. For me, anyway.

On Jan. 23, the gates were thrown open on the final section of the Keystone, a 487-mile stretch that runs from Cushing, Okla., to Houston. This was Phase 3 of Keystone, connecting Phase 1 (Alberta to Steel City, Nebraska via Manitoba and North Dakota) to Phase 2 (Steel City to Cushing. Google the Keystone Pipeline map. Very helpful). This means that that nasty slop from Alberta can flow, right now, all the way on down to Texas via pipeline.

It should also be pointed out that both Phases 1 and 2 have been operational for three years with no major problems. So why is everybody screeching a blue veiner about the Keystone?

Well, they’re not. They’re screeching about the Keystone XL, not the Keystone. Big diff. The XL proposal is an improvement to the Keystone in that it would cut a shorter, diagonal path from lower Alberta straight over to Steel City, and it would also significantly increase the volume of

revamping the way that we exit kids out of high school, and making the test scores for the kids and not necessarily the adults that are giving them, and of course continuing to be vocal on the inadequate funding of education and the inadequate funding of services in this state. Not one single person can single-handedly fix that issue, but I certainly plan on being vocal about it as I have been in the past, in trying to forge ahead that path for Nevadans. I mean, as I said at the beginning, there’s just so many different ways in which the lieutenant governor can really just act on things and do things that the office has never done before.
