To tell the truth Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

What was the crazy crap I was writing about last week?

The nature of time, as in, the difference between what’s on the clock and what the clock appears to measure but to which it only exists in parallel?

You might as well ask, “What is truth?” which was a joke I alluded to this morning, confusing the books of Mark and John as I sometimes do. Jokes are risky, though, and it’s difficult, particularly for guys like me, to know if someone “gets” me or my jokes.

But if time is a heady topic, and truth is impossible to know, I’ve got to tell you, there’s never been a concept that screwed me up like the concept of “quality.”

I must have read Robert Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance at a point in my life when I was particularly vulnerable to metaphysical thinking.

In fact, that time, which I’d guess was about 1982, was one of the few times in my life when I had a nickname that I actually answered to. I was on the Catholic campus of Benedictine College of Kansas, and my nickname was Mr. Reality. I loved to drink and talk about things that mattered—things that I look at now like I watch a dog chasing its tail.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance asks a pretty difficult question in the most simple way possible: What is quality?

That simple question drove the author insane, and it had a pretty radical effect on me, too.

The idea is that there is something inside of us all that knows the difference between right and wrong, good and bad, and that sense of “quality” cuts across cultures and philosophies.

Is this the basis for postmodernism? I can’t say which way Pirsig would argue. Plainly, he took his consideration back to Socrates, who in some ways was the beginning of the Western thinking that post-modernism attempts to deny. But if Socrates had feet of clay then what does our philosophy stand upon?

Seems as though I’ll have some time to consider all that because I’m officially on spring break from teaching and being a master’s student, and my girl is taking me down to Sonoma. I’ll have a glass of red with essence of almond, please.

Re “The Organic Food Lie” (Feature story, Feb. 13): It was interesting to read that we have unknowingly been eating GMO foods for some time with no ill effects, and yet we have an epidemic of autism that no one can explain.

Selling out our children We get involved in our personal lives and self interests. We often take our eyes off the big picture and forget we have the power to change things in America. If this terrible debt $17.3 trillion continues to rise, it will destroy our heritage of sacrifice for a better tomorrow.

I’ve been watching a documentary this morning on World War II and at the same time seeing the national debt clock keep on ticking upward at an alarming rate. There are all the sacrifices from previous generations, sacrifices that allowed us the opportunity to have a better life, and all we do is hide our head in the sand and stay in the car headed over the cliff instead of applying the brakes. Scares the hell out of me, but what’s even more scary, nobody seems to care. Not sure what I can do individually to make a big difference, but we can start immediately writing political leaders and expressing our concerns about their self indulgent debauchery of our children’s future.

In my many critiques of his columns, as well as some other of your liberal columnists, I have never stooped to the sort of name

calling that Mr. Van Dyke routinely engages in, but I can remain silent no longer. His use of the word fuxxwad as well as other childish vocabulary is just another example of his immaturity—similar to a 12-year-old that has just discovered dirty words. That of course is not to mention that he can’t seem to get straight as to who it was that was riding shirtless for all to admire. For your information, Mr. Van Dyke, that was Vladimir Putin, that wonderful advocate and defender of freedom in what he would once again like to turn Russia into, the Soviet Union with dominance over all of Eastern Europe.

By the way, his sort of dominance is also recognized as slavery. I recognize it as such, having been born in East Germany and having to escape that paradise by eventually immigrating into the United States.

As to President Obama’s foreign policy, if he had one, then Putin might actually have some consideration for the U.S. as a power to be reckoned with instead of the paper tiger it has become. My criticism of Mr. Van Dyke’s language is not to be interpreted as meaning that he doesn’t have the right to free speech, only that free speech also requires some sense of decorum and responsibility. Personally, I lost all respect for Sen. McCain years ago for many reasons. On the other hand, former Ambassador Bolton has experience in dealing with many despicable politicians and governments worldwide. I wonder what sort of background and experience Mr. Van Dyke has? I am also puzzled that D. Brian Burghart, the editor of the newspaper, continues to foster Mr. Van Dyke’s language. I don’t recall Mr. Burqhart ever using similar language in his commentary.

Re “The Lyons” (Art of the State, March 13): Great article! I laughed just thinking about Rita discussing with hubby how she plans redecorating when he’s gone. She sounds like my 95-year-old father who makes it his duty to torture his wife (“slave,” he says) “lovingly” every day.

It’s great we can find humor in dysfunctional relationships. After all, laughter is the best medicine!

Let’s see if I understand this. If I’m working in the private sector and I refuse to answer my boss’s questions about what I’ve done, I’ll be out the door in a flash. But if I’m a public servant, and I refuse to answer my boss’s questions, I get sent home with pay.

The U.S. Constitution protects a citizen from being a witness against himself in a criminal case. No problem. But the Fifth Amendment only applies to criminal cases, not hiring/firing decisions. Everyone in the federal government works for We The People. And the U.S. Congress represents We The People. It seems that anytime a federal employee gives false testimony, or refuses to testify before Congress, that’s the same as refusing to answer the boss’s questions. Shouldn’t that be grounds for immediate dismissal?

You reinforced what I have always believed. I am a senior who has never gotten a flu shot, I have been made to feel guilty about that by almost everyone I tell. I can now live guilt free!

Yes, ringing bells Re “Nothing matters” (Editor’s note, March 13): Dude, seriously? The Earth doesn’t wobble. The seasons (and the increase in daylight of a few minutes a day this time of year) are caused by the planet being tilted 23 degrees on its rotational axis relative to its orbital plane around the sun. As the Earth orbits the sun, the number of daylight hours depends on how much the rotational axis points towards or away from the sun. Is this ringing any bells from third grade science?

Dear City of Reno mayoral candidate, Congratulations on plunking down your $30 filing fee to fulfill your dream of being the Mayor of the Biggest Little City.

Now the hard part begins.

As one of 20 possibilities, you’re going to have to sell yourself to the primary election voters in the coming months. In such a crowded field, by you’ll need to distinguish yourself Sheila Leslie quickly. Please articulate a vision that not only appeals to progressives but is inspirational enough to motivate us to go to the polls since the most competitive primaries are between the far right and less-than-moderate Republican wings. And we certainly don’t want ultra conservatives choosing our next mayor.

This year, progressives are looking for someone who is less of a personality and more of a populist than we’ve had in the past. More Barbara Bennett, less Bob Cashell.

We want a mayor who understands that growth for growth’s sake is not the goal; sustainability is.

We could really get behind a forward-thinking mayor who knows what an “agrihood” is and will support them. We’d like someone who will stop dedicating our taxes to subsidize rich businessmen and start investing in our neighborhoods instead.

We want a mayor who is willing to ruffle some feathers of the goodold-boys. We’re tired of the “father knows best” mentality of the behindthe-scene power brokers. We want a mayor who listens to the people.

Please say you’ll change the city charter to comply with the Voting Rights Act and let citizens select their own neighborhood councilmember.

No more of this nonsense that citywide elections are somehow superior.

Let’s open up elections to people who won’t have to kowtow to developers to raise enough money to be competitive.

It should go without saying that our mayor should not be a bully. She or he should lead by example, not by implied or overt threats of retaliation should a councilmember question authority. The mayor should also treat city staff with the respect they deserve

and avoid blaming them for the missteps of the Council. Hire the best and then avoid micromanaging the details. Let your managers manage.

But neither should our mayor be a joke. We want someone who is serious about the job and who demonstrates some practical knowledge about the challenges facing our underappreciated, overleveraged city.

Criticizing the current council serves its purpose, but we want a leader, not a heckler-in-chief.

Progressives will support a mayor who shows he or she sincerely cares about Reno’s citizens, even those who are obviously struggling, including the drug-addicted and the mentally ill. Expect to answer questions about the homeless shelter, the triage center, and the lack of transitional housing options. What can Reno do to reduce the amount of meth and heroin on our streets and make sure evidenced-based substance abuse treatment is available on-demand?

And what about making public transportation fully accessible and relevant?

We want a mayor who will avoid picking fights with other elected officials and instead direct that energy to actually solving difficult problems that don’t recognize an arbitrary line between jurisdictions.

Forget about who gets the credit.

Just get the job done.

When you show up at our door campaigning in the weeks ahead, we’ll have our questions ready and we’ll expect more than platitudes in response. We appreciate your effort and the time you’ll be sacrificing to earn our vote. We might even decide to help you campaign if you inspire us.

Remember, when progressives unite, as they did two years ago in the crowded Ward 1 race, it makes a difference. Jenny Brekhus won.

But you better get going since June 10th is almost here.

Just don’t take us for granted.

We’ll be listening carefully. Ω

Republicans must join the 21st century A look at the campaign websites for the Republican candidates in Nevada shows the number one issue is to stop the proposed Nevada Margins Tax. What else would a party whose sole reason for existence is to limit the size of government be expected to do? One Northern Nevada by Brendan Republican senator has nine “NO!” Trainor issues on his campaign literature.

Many are now asking what else Republicans have besides “Just Say No!” The era of William F. Buckley is over, and in 2014, history has already run past his attempt to stand athwart it with a Stop Sign. The small government accomplishments of the Republican Party are strikingly similar to the mediocre accomplishments of the public school system they vilify. People have elected Republican presidents and congresses and governors galore, yet government has continued to grow only marginally slower than when the Democrats are in power. In fact, the last time the Republicans held both the Congress and the White House, government grew on right-wing steroids.

If any leg of the three-legged conservative stool—defense, fiscal policy and social issues—is being sawed off, it’s the social conservative leg. The youth who attended the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this March are not your father’s Republicans. The millennial generation is the first generation to grow up with friends who have never been in the closet.

More than half of Republicans under 45 favor legalizing weed and gay marriage.

But older Republicans continue to demonstrate they just don’t like people different than they are. Controversies over GoProud and Atheist Republicans at CPAC coincided with clumsy attempts to carve out discrimination law exceptions for religious belief.

Other Republicans wasted political capital passing new abortion restrictions that will never pass judicial review.

This year’s CPAC showered Sen. Rand Paul with love, and he won the presidential straw poll

running away again. Sen. Paul is making a concerted effort at minority outreach, and while the CPAC panels on the drug war and gay marriage leaned very heavily libertarian, the workshop on minority outreach was sadly nearly empty.

Conservatives have a belief system based on appreciation of established order and social hierarchy. Yet they also claim to believe in free enterprise, which is marked by social mobility and creative destruction. Donald Trump unfortunately got CPAC applause for warning that “immigrants are coming for your jobs”—as if there are only a limited number of jobs and you own yours—and worse that “immigrants” (code for Latinos) will never, ever vote Republican.

Conservatives seem to be at once for freedom and against it, for small government except when they are for big government.

Republicans were warned that most Latinos want an orderly and fair immigration policy, including

a secure border, but the one thing they will not support is mass deportations. Yet Republicans spend most of their time talking about fences and barbed wire and self deportation and not a lot about an actual market-based immigration policy that improves on the freedom of mobility that labor markets and human flourishing require.

Worse, they want all American employees in a federal database that will likely produce more false positives for American workers than there are illegals, while making hiring a federal privilege.

Can anyone believe their outrage at the new federal medical databases that Obamacare is creating when they want to do the same for immigration policy?

Republicans will have to decide what conservatism means today or continue to bleed party membership. I am betting they will have to move in a more libertarian direction to be a successful national party again. Ω

Who shot Darcie Latham?

Readers may recall this quote from our Feb. 27 story, “Who watches the watchers?”

“I heard a gunshot, and I saw my sister [Darcie Latham] fall, and I thought, ‘Oh my god, she just killed her,’” [Brittnie Andrews] said. “And then the cops started to walk forward, and I heard shots. They were shooting my mom. Then I heard, ‘Keep your guns on her,’ and I realized there was a second set of cops on the other side of my mom. … After they had shot my mom, I heard them saying, ‘Keep the guns on her, her hand’s moving.’”

The story continued on to talk about how the media handled the story.

“It was a crime scene of the sort that makes news producers and editors drool—police and perps with guns blazing, a family in distress, blood in the street and sudden death in quiet suburbia. The only problem was that the local news media was asleep at the press, and apparently nobody—not the newspapers, not the television news stations, not the radio stations, not the all-seeing internet—got this story right.”

Well, guess what? Neither did we. But it wasn’t for lack of trying. A message was left on Sparks Police Chief Brian Allen’s voicemail on Feb. 21, six days before the story was published, but it was not returned. The Sparks Police Department also released a report on the matter that did not include any mention of the possibility that somebody besides Monica Ritchey shot the 25-year-old Latham. That doesn’t prove an intent to deceive, as other investigative agencies take over investigations of officerinvolved shootings, and documents were still being added to the file four days after the Oct. 13 shooting, but it certainly speaks to the reliability of witnesses. There were further public documents (press releases) requested of the Sparks PD on Feb. 26 that may contain explanatory information, but they have not been produced.

In a stunning revelation, Darcie Latham’s attorney, Richard A. Salvatore of the Hardy Law Group, says that his client was shot by an officer with the Sparks Police Department—not by her mother.

“All I can tell you at this juncture is that our investigation leads us to believe that one of the officers shot Darcie Latham,” Salvatore said. “And the notion that her mom shot her is incorrect.

I’m not at liberty to discuss what facts I know. I mean, it’s ongoing litigation.”

He said that it’s generally the practice of both sides in a litigation to not give out too much information, as that information may come back in unexpected ways.

“You can’t just go out because information that’s out there is information that will be used in some way, mostly against us,” he said. “So I can’t comment on information I’ve collected, but I can tell you that that is where our investigation leads us. Let me also say we have to do a ton more, and we will know a lot more because the information that has not been disclosed is the entire Monica Ritchey case and Darcie Latham case.

“At some point, Dick Gammick, district attorney for Washoe County, will have to review this and determine whether the officers’ actions were appropriate or not. Once that happens, we will be able to collect that information that law enforcement has put together. I mean, ballistics—you name it—blood spatter, photos, officer statements. They will look at the firearms to see when and how many times they were discharged, and we should have pretty much the whole boat of information once the district attorney looks at this case and renders his opinion.”

For her part, Brittnie Andrews, the young woman who witnessed both shootings and commented in our story, said she didn’t want to say anything that might negatively impact her sister’s case.

Sparks Police Chief Brian Allen said this is an active and open investigation by the Reno Police Department and until the investigation is completed he will not have further comment.

Marketing Sparks officials pass out money to boost tourism and other functions “No, actually, it’s kind of like a big tailgate party, and everybody’s welcome,” said Lisa Jansen, describing something by called the Redneck Rodeo Truck Dennis Myers Show to the Sparks Tourism and Marketing Committee.

The sponsors of the Truck Show were appearing before the committee seeking from $1,500 to $10,000 to stage the event. The committee recommended that they receive $5,000.

The committee preferred regional to local events.

The Tourism and Marketing Committee is one of those peculiar end results of Nevada’s casino power.

Back in the late 1990s, downtown Reno casinos wanted an events center and didn’t want to pay for it. A room tax was imposed in a special downtown Reno tax district to fund construction of the center.

As time passed, it became apparent that the room tax was too small, so the casinos decided to make the tax apply county-wide (they did it through elected officials, of course) instead of increasing the tax within their personal tax district. This meant that people in Washoe City, Sparks, Vya and Wadsworth would be paying for a downtown Reno events center.

Sparks in particular was terminally thrilled with this arrangement, so a

deal was struck. Sparks city government would get $200,000 a year from the take. The city then set up the Tourism and Marketing Committee to dole the money out, some of it for special events.

On this day last week, the committee was deciding what to recommend on six applications—the Truck Show, the Sparks farmers’ market, Hot August Nights, a Western Heritage Festival, and two Sparks Nugget events. (Earlier this month it heard presentations on several other applications.)

Representatives from each group made presentations at the meeting and the committee then voted amounts.

The final decision is made by the city council, but the committee’s recommendations carry great weight.

The committee seemed to prefer to fund events that draw regionally instead of relying on locals. As a result, an event like Hot August Nights had an easy time of it, while the most locally-based of the applications—a Western Heritage Festival sponsored by the Sparks Museum and Cultural Center—was handled pretty roughly, though its presentation included the information, “Over 50 percent of our visitors are from out of area.” Of the six applications heard at last week’s meeting, five were presented by professional marketers. The sixth, the museum, was a non-profit represented by a retiree and a part time worker.

That was the one that got the harshest

scrutiny during debate over how much to grant the applicants. After the museum presenters departed, committee member David Zamarin said they were nice people, “but it’s really hard to justify that kind of money,” and committee chair Ron Schmitt said he found the presentation unfocused and that they “clearly haven’t outlined what they’re going to do.”

The committee also has a multiyear plan underway of reducing funding for long-time events that have had time to establish themselves and of shifting funding to newer events. The Redneck Rodeo Truck Show benefited from that policy—that, plus what Schmitt called the “phenomenally successful” television shows that reflect “southern styles.”

“They [the truck show] have the opportunity to do something with that event” on television, he said. Jansen said, “There’s a big strategic picture here that we’re looking at, you know, three to five years down the road, we think that we’re going to be really big, and it will partner with Nugget County Crossroads,” a three-day country music event.”

As for the older events, Schmitt said after the meeting, “We don’t want to lose Hot August Nights, but after 27 years, they should be supporting themselves.”

The committee recommended $75,000 for the Brand Leadership Team (a city-organized marketing group), $10,000 for Pumpkin Palooza, $20,000 for the U.S. Open of Watercross, $20,000 for a Water Ski Stunt Show (tentative), $5,000 for the Redneck Rodeo Truck Show, $13,000 for the Sparks farmers’ market plus $2,000 for a market coupon plan, $50,000 for two Nugget events (fireworks and a rib cookoff), $30,000 for Hot August Nights, and $5,000 for the Western Heritage Festival with a possibility of another $5,000 if the event is designated by a state agency as a 150th anniversary of statehood event.

Nugget issues The meeting was a neat illustration of the coziness between Sparks city officials and the largest downtown business, the Nugget Hotel Casino. In fact, it was sometimes difficult to keep the lines straight. According to the agenda, the Nugget had three items—grants for its own July 4 fireworks and the rib cookoff at the end of August, plus it was partnering with the Reno Rodeo Association on the Redneck Rodeo Truck Show. However, that turned out to be an error, though it was easy to

understand how the agenda mistake was made.

The issue came up because some city officials, notably City Councilmember Ron Schmitt, have been troubled about the informal way some applications are submitted for the city grants. Schmitt has wanted each application to have a clear applicant to which all the lines on an organizational chart lead— insurance, payroll, whatever—so that there is accountability. When he saw two sponsors listed for the truck show on the agenda, he raised the issue and Jansen said the Nugget was not involved.

It turned out that Jansen was there as a Nugget representative on fireworks and the rib cookoff, and she was there as a rodeo volunteer on the truck show. “Just because I’m involved, you shouldn’t assume it’s the Nugget.” she said. But it wasn’t that simple. For one thing, as Jansen described it, it was as a rodeo volunteer that she slid the truck show out from under the Grand Sierra Resort and delivered it to her employer, the Nugget: “So I’m on this committee that decided a few years ago we needed to have some kind of promotional event to kick off Reno Rodeo.

So we planned this truck show. ... So we had this event at GSR. And it was funny because I actually got the job at the Nugget the week before the event, so I started at the Nugget and then had to go Friday night over to GSR, which was very awkward. So I told them, you know, ‘If you want me to plan this event, we really need to move it to the Nugget.’ … So last year was our first year at the Nugget.”

In addition, Schmitt pointed out, the Nugget was involved. “If you look on your application, you know, ‘John Ascuaga’s Nugget business license’ is applying on this application. … I think we’d have one entity apply.” Jansen said that was a holdover from the previous year and the Nugget’s previous ownership and would be fixed.

Then there is the make-up of the city committee itself. It is chaired by Schmitt and Councilmember Ron Smith is also a member. The third member is David Zamarin—a Nugget executive. (Mayor Geno Martini was present as an observer.)

Zamarin has a lot of marketing experience, including at the Tachi Palace Casino in Kings County, California, and at Reno’s Peppermill.

But his questions suggested he was unfamiliar with Sparks and confused by some of the local events. Several times things were explained to him.

Moreover, the Nugget connection blurred lines. Zamarin at one point said, “I’m obviously trying to separate my own business interests from pure logic,” and Schmitt at another point noted that Zamarin would not vote on issues that directly affected the Nugget.

It was difficult to sort out roles.

But Zamarin’s comments also made it plain that issues indirectly affecting the Nugget were fair game, as when he disparaged the farmers’ market because “I don’t see this as benefiting the Nugget that much.” It was uncertain whether he was then speaking as a Nugget representative or a committee member scrutinizing applications. During discussion of the Nugget items both Jansen and Zamarin made the case, though Zamarin stayed in his seat as a committee member. When the Nugget items were approved, Zamarin said, “That’s very fair, and I appreciate it.”

When Jansen stood to shake hands with the committee members after her presentation, the two Nugget workplace colleagues shook, too.

The city councilmembers on the committee were solicitous of the Nugget’s needs and problems.

They spoke of how the new Nugget ownership—which took over in December—needs time to “figure out what’s going on.”

It is solicitude the club probably needs. Virtually the first action taken by the new owners was one that seemed almost designed to alienate locals. It closed Trader Dick’s restaurant, a fixture of the community that is named for Nugget founder Dick Graves, and will replace it with a chain, Gilley’s (unrelated to the Urban Cowboy club, closed in 1989 and later demolished). It’s hard to imagine a single other change at the property more likely to grate on local sensibilities. The councilmembers at the grants meeting, more attuned to locals, spoke of giving the new ownership time while it gets its feet on the ground.

Jansen told the committee that the two Nugget special events—the fireworks and rib cookoff—will look much like they have in past years in order not to distress the public.

“Because of the new ownership this year, we don’t want to make any big changes,” she said. “The community is very nervous about change.” Ω

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is one of those things you either love or hate.

Both sides of the argument are passionate, and since it’s becoming increasingly common in Nevada, learning more about it can help you by Sage Leehey decide whether it’s good or bad.

Dawn Harris, founder of the Frack Free Nevada website and Facebook s age l@ page and member of Nevadans Against Fracking, is hosting an event news review.c om series at the University of Nevada, Reno in order to foster awareness of the issue and get people to come up with their own verdict on fracking.

“I want it on everybody’s tongues,” Harris said. “I want everybody talking about it. I want them to know what it is. I want them to have an understanding of what the implications are. There’s a disconnect between fracking and how it’s going to affect people. It’s been really, really hard to get people engaged in the issue, and it’s a really important issue because we’re talking about our air and our water.”

The event series takes place over the course of four days—March 26, April 5, April 16 and April 30—and Harris’ goal is to showcase an unbiased presentation of facts on fracking. Her original plan was to have people on both sides of the argument present, but she was unable to get anyone from the fracking industry to participate.

The first day of events runs from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will be more “artsy” than the other days, according to Harris. She plans to present cultural perspectives on fracking, with a focus on the importance of water, as well as a session she titled “Fracking 101.” This event will talk about the basics of what fracking is for those who aren’t as familiar with the topic.

“They’re presenting facts,” Harris said. “I’m trying to stick with science and those who are well known in the industry and have credentials. I don’t want it to be just about opinions.”

Harris is displeased with the way the industry is regulated in Nevada because she believes the Division of Minerals—the entity in charge of fracking regulation in the state—is highly influenced by the oil and gas industry, creating a conflict of interest. She said this fuels her group’s desire for a ban in the state.

“Not only is there bias in the program, but there’s also substandard monitoring and the regulations are not doing the job,” Harris said. “So for those reasons, we want a ban or a moratorium until an unbiased, independent party can come in and review the program.” Ω

H

e sits on the corner of Cherry and Apple Streets, dreaming of drinking a fresh glass of ice cold water that would bury his drought beneath the concrete he laid upon. He would notice how every day his rags just got closer to junk as he tossed on his stained beige jacket with a patch on the back of it along with his old and dirty socks. They didn’t even look like they could be socks because all the fabric was long gone on each end. He survived with them another three years after being left with nothing.

At the end of his fingertips, you could see that he hadn’t been able to clip his nails for a long while. He wore a long beard and a bone-tight skin around his body. You could tell that he rarely ate and when he did, nothing would make his sickness better. He vomited, not because he wanted to lose weight, but because he wasn’t used to eating anymore.

He was homeless, but never hopeless.

Every night, before he went to bed he counted his blessings for the day and asked god to forgive him for not working to his potential. He sat at this corner every single day asking for change, but when they put down a dollar bill or even 25 cents he would stand up and hand it right back to the person in a kindly manner and say, “Thank you, but no thank you.”

The man who sits on this corner never asks for cigarettes, nor booze, not even for a meal. All he ever asked for since he’s been in this world was change.

They only tossed him cents.

Ichthyosaur Marionette The best ideas come when friends get together and start drinking. That’s how local attorney and by wood-sculpture artist Jerry Snyder came Jessica up with the idea to make a 50-foot-long Santina ichthyosaur skeleton.

Inspired to submit a regionally-focused wood sculpture to the Burning Man Circle of Regional Effigies (CORE), Snyder and several artists got together last spring to spitball ideas for what wood sculpture could represent our region. Snyder seized upon the ichthyosaur, the Nevada state fossil.

friends for months, to the exclusion of all else. Several children, including Snyder’s own daughter, even got in on the act. But in mid-August, after roughly 2,500 hours of labor, they had an impressive 2,000-pound ichthyosaur skeleton ready for the Black Rock Desert.

Then the work really began. A 20-foothigh structure composed of 6-inch x 12-inch beams, gusseted and tied down with compression straps, held the giant beast.

Each piece was tied with bungee cording to the cathedral-like roof, enabling the skeleton to bounce and “swim,” marionette-like.

A week’s worth of playa dust and burners swinging from bones forced daily repairs.

“We started calling it ‘the fixyosaur,’” says Snyder.

Though it was not made a CORE project, a fortuitous meeting last fall with Nevada Discovery Museum’s executive director Mat Sinclair led to

ichthyosaurs in the world, the team returned to Reno and got started. Great Basin Brewery offered a donation, and a few grants and donations through a Kickstarter campaign provided the rest to fund the project.

Forty sheets of three-quarter inch plywood were purchased and the work of approximately 50 volunteers began on the marionette on April 13 at The Generator, a 34,000-foot, free artist workspace in Sparks.

To construct the behemoth, which Snyder says is actual size but not scientifically accurate, the team rough-cut plywood, glued the pieces together to create depth, and finished it with a coat of white deck stain. Each of the vertebrae alone is comprised of seven wooden discs, and the ribs are each comprised of three plywood layers.

“All in all, for each rib, I think we probably spent 10 to 15 hours,” Snyder says.

That’s nothing, however, compared to the head, which he says took 100 hours.

The project consumed the lives of Snyder, his fiancee Kris Vagner, family and

an arrangement that enabled Snyder to give the ichthyosaur to the museum as a permanent installation. No longer a marionette, it was installed early this month, and is suspended by metal cords from the ceiling above the main entrance to the museum.

So why do all this—spend countless hours of backbreaking work, at the expense of your leisure time, on a piece of art you just give away?

Snyder recalls the book Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins, which offers what he thinks is the best reason: “If there’s a thing, a scene, maybe, an image that you want to see real bad, that you need to see but it doesn’t exist in the world around you … then you create it so that you can look at it and have it around.”

“When we got up to the playa, it was like, ‘Yeah. That’s what I wanted to see,’” Snyder says. “And now here, at the museum, with kids looking at it and ooh-ing and aah-ing, I think, ‘Yeah, that’s a cool thing we did.’ I’m proud of it.” Ω

House rules Little House on Center St. 725 S. Center St., 737-9598 Reno’s burgeoning Midtown district has plenty of interesting locations for lunch, dinner and drinks, but with the openby Todd South ing of Little House on Center St., the area finally has a decent breakfast/ brunch option.

Formerly home to a sandwich shop, the brick house was built in 1919 and converted for restaurant use over a decade ago. The new owners have revamped the kitchen and launched their cafe with a pretty decent menu.

Breakfast offerings ($5.50-$10.99) include Benedicts, omelets and scrambles, with seafood and tofu options, pancakes, and a really decent cup of coffee ($1.75). Lunch features some sandwich, burger and salad choices ($7.99-$9.99), with a fish and chips plate thrown in for good measure.

They even have a basic kids menu ($6.50-$7.50), which is probably unique for a Midtown establishment.

The sandwich itself was completely delicious, and among the best I’ve ever had. The tuna filet was about an inch thick, seared and seasoned perfectly, sliced into strips and placed on a thick, crusty bun (provided by Truckee Sourdough).

By itself that fish would have been excellent, but drizzled with a creamy aioli, spiked with Thai chili sauce, and placed on the above-average bun with some onion and tomato, the result was a fantastic blend of texture and flavors. If the other lunch items are even half as good, this place will have no trouble keeping busy.

However, my wife’s biscuits and gravy breakfast ($8.50) was a little disappointing. Rather than the big, fluffy biscuits she was expecting, Little House’s version is more akin to a scone. A pair of small, dense, quick bread discs that seemed lost in the gravy. My wife said everything had good flavor, but just didn’t match her expectation of “big, beautiful biscuits and gravy.”

Her eggs and bacon strips were cooked well enough, but the fried potatoes weren’t very crispy or wellseasoned. Perhaps they’re still working out the kinks on this dish.

My daughter ordered oatmeal with milk ($3.99) and seemed happy with the result. Her young man ordered huevos rancheros ($7.99), and the eggs were good, the chorizo was mild (served with a selection of hot sauces on the side), and the whole thing was served atop a bed of tortilla chips. Different presentation than the norm, but he must have enjoyed it, because it quickly disappeared from his plate.

The cafe retains a homey charm, complete with stone fireplace, yet has ample seating including counter stools and al fresco tables for warmer months. The service was fast, friendly, and we were never wanting for beverage refills. Being that they’ve only been open for two or three months, things will only get better as they find their footing among Reno’s plethora of brunch cafes. I’ve heard good things about their burgers and Benedicts, but the seared tuna was so good it’s going to be tough ordering anything else on my next visit to the Little House. Ω

Although our server didn’t know a lot about the food—any question about ingredients sent her to the kitchen for answers—she had no hesitation when asked for her favorites. I settled on her favorite, the spicy seared tuna sandwich ($9.99), but couldn’t decide between salad or fries. When in doubt, order both.

They only charged me a couple of bucks extra for the salad, so it was an easy choice.

The salad was basic, with plenty of fresh mixed greens, grape tomatoes, cucumber slices, onion and what had to be a house-made blue cheese dressing (big chunks of blue cheese crumbled on top of the salad).

The fries were crinkle-cut and just average. Not bad, but next time I’ll stick with the salad.

Aaron Paul, of Breaking Bad fame, takes his first postBad big step into the limelight as a lead actor in Need for Speed, a big screen adaptation of the popular video game series.

Paul is a good actor, but he’s miscast here as Tobey Marshall, a street racer looking for revenge after doing time for a crime he didn’t commit—actually, for a crime he by sort of didn’t commit.

Bob Grimm Wait … now that I’m actually writing about this, I realize he’s pretty much guilty b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m of the crime even though the movie tries to pass him off as innocent. Man, this movie is stupid as all hell.

Tobey has an auto mechanic shop that tries to do big racecar jobs that command big dollar paydays. He also moonlights as a street racer, one of those jackasses who blaze around in hot rods on public streets endangering the lives of other drivers and pedestrians.

See, the basic problem with a film like this is that the central, supposed hero is a big moron. It’s hard to get behind a character with such a reckless disregard for others, whose joyriding causes major catastrophes while he cackles with glee because he’s going really, really fast in a really, really neat car. OK, enough of my pontificating.

Tobey’s nemesis, Dino (Dominic Cooper), walks into his shop and offers him the chance to build a super Mustang for a big cut. Tobey hates Dino, but he needs the dough, so he takes the gig. When all is said and done, the two wind up drag racing for the entire profit on the car, with Tobey’s Justin Bieber look-alike pal Little Pete

(Harrison Gilbertson) racing in his own car.

Little Pete winds up wiping out and dying thanks to a high speed bump from Dino, who proceeds to flee the scene.

Tobey winds up taking the heat for Little Pete’s death. I say he damn well should take part of the rap because he was engaged in a street race that got his buddy killed, even if he didn’t do the fatal move that caused the crash. Here I go pontificating again.

Anyways, Tobey does some serious time, and he’s looking for some payback when he gets out of jail. Circumstances lead to him racing across the country in the Mustang he built with hot Imogen Poots in the passenger seat. They do all sorts of crazy crap on their cross-country trek, including flying the car through the air to avoid police during one particular chase. It’s an absolutely impossible feat, but I admit it looked cool.

I caught a 3-D screening of the film, and the 3-D is put to rather good use. There are plenty of shots from the inside of cars looking over the steering wheel and through the windshield, making it feel like you are engaged in a real race. When Little Pete meets his twisty end, the whole thing is shown from the inside of the car, and it’s a nifty trick.

As for the drama and plot, this one ends up being only slightly better than your average Fast & Furious movie, a franchise I have grown to despise over the years.

Paul has done some decent big screen acting in the past. His role as an alcoholic in Smashed is his best in movies. His future slate, including another film with Poots called A Long Way Down, a role in Ridley Scott’s Exodus, and possible involvement in the Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul, looks promising.

That’s a good thing, because his attempt to become the new Vin Diesel or Nicolas Cage falls flat. Need for Speed might look cool during some of the race scenes, but it stalls out when anybody opens their mouths and tries to emote. Ω

300: Rise of an Empire

Director Noam Murro takes over the 300 franchise from Zack Snyder, who has a reduced role to co-writer and producer this time out. Murro’s take on the exposed belly ancient warrior thing lacks any kind of true dramatic tension. His film is a bunch of boat fights mixed with people in togas emoting slowly on soundstages. It’s a bit of a prequel to 300 in that we see the origins of Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), the golden god Persian warrior that gave Gerard Butler (who appears in reused footage from 300) such a hard time in the last film. As far as storytelling goes, the Xerxes prologue is easily the most compelling part of the movie. Too bad it only accounts for a few minutes. The main plot involves Greek general Themistokles, played by Sullivan Stapleton. Stapleton is basically Gerard Butler with a slightly less impressive BMI (he’s got a little more around the belly button).

He’s basically tasked here with delivering an always-determined looking face and shouting a lot. In short, he’s been asked to do what Butler had to do in the last film, with perhaps a little less airbrushing on the abs. The main nemesis, besides Xerxes, would be Artemisia, played wickedly by Eva Green. Green makes for a memorable badass in a somewhat unmemorable film.

Frozen

I have to admit I was more into the strange Mickey Mouse short that precedes this musical adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Snow Queen” than the actual feature. It features retro Mickey busting out of a black and white film and becoming 3-D as he battles a bad guy kidnapping Minnie. It’s worth the price of admission. As for the actual feature movie, Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel have wonderful voices, and the visuals are fun to behold in this middle-of-theroad Disney fare. It has a lot of music—some of it quite good, some of it, well, not—and a beautiful look to it. For recent Disney animation, my vote goes to Tangled for best, but that’s not to say this one is a letdown. It’s OK. Just OK. It’s about on par with Pixar’s latest, Monster’s University. It’s fun to watch, but not altogether memorable.

The Lego Movie

Fast paced, frequently hilarious, and visually fun, this is the sort of movie we’ve come to expect from Pixar, one that appeals to both kids and adults on many levels.

It’s also notable that it isn’t a Pixar film, but a product of the still formidable but inconsistent Warner Brothers animation wing. The plot follows Emmet (Chris Pratt), a “generic” builder as he goes about his homogenized life, building structures under strict deadlines, listening to the same song (Tegan and Sara’s terrific “Everything is Awesome”) every minute of the day, and following the rules of the omnipotent President Business (Will Ferrell). President Business demands conformity in a decidedly socialistic way, but he keeps everybody at bay by promising Taco Tuesdays. Things change instantly when Emmet meets Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), who reveals to Emmet that he’s living in a pre-programmed world, and there’s the possibility for real life beyond its walls (echoes of The Matrix and Terry Gilliam’s Brazil). Emmet joins forces with Wildstyle and her extremely cool boyfriend, Batman (Arnett) to take down the establishment and restore freewill. The Lego Movie is a bit exhausting at times, but at least the constant stream of activity is laced with super intelligence rather than bombastic, vapid visuals. It’s a cliché, but I’ll say it: “Fun for the whole family!”

The Monuments Men

Director George Clooney’s war epic about historians racing to save art from the Nazis looks and feels like it was just taken out of a time capsule buried in 1958. It’s quite breezy for a war movie, peppered with laughs provided by a strong cast including Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban and John Goodman as men trying to thwart Hitler’s plan for a giant museum. It has one of those whistle-infused soundtracks, and it doesn’t hurt that Clooney and Dujardin look like Errol Flynn and Gene Kelly. The movie moves briskly, and is perhaps a bit too weightless for a movie of such heavy subject matter.

It also has a useless subplot involving Damon and Cate Blanchett. Still, Clooney has great command of the camera here, the ensemble (especially Murray and Goodman) shines, and

it’s fun to watch. This is an interesting piece of World War II history, and it’s good that somebody has made a decent movie to cover this chapter of Hitler insanity.

Non-Stop

Liam Neeson plays Bill Marks, an alcoholic US Air Marshal doing a gig on a transatlantic flight … A TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT THAT IS GOING TO BE TAKEN!!! Shortly after taking a drink and boarding the plane, Marks starts getting texts on his secure network informing him that people on the plane will die unless a lot of money is handed over. The twist is that the hijacker tormenting Marks eventually makes it look like Marks is the one hijacking the plane. The movie has a screw loose, but somehow manages to be stupid fun thanks to Neeson’s stalwart presence and a mystery that does a good job keeping viewers in the dark. Julianne Moore delivers good supporting work as the understanding passenger who is there to help … OR IS SHE? Again, the film has a pretty good mystery at its core, and that makes it a lot of fun even if it is dumber than a bag of hammers.

Robocop

RoboCop is a remake that totally rewrites an original in a way that won’t piss off its legions of fans. Joel Kinnaman steps into the role of Alex Murphy (played in the late ’80s original by Peter Weller), a Detroit cop in the year 2028 who gets himself blown up after causing too much trouble for a criminal kingpin. Murphy, with the permission of his wife (Abbie Cornish) has his life saved by being placed into an armored endoskeleton with the purpose of making him a law enforcement superhero. In the original, Murphy (well played

by Peter Weller) started his crime crusade not really knowing who he was, with memories suppressed. He eventually figured out his identity and solved his own murder. The new film drastically diverts from the original, having its Murphy freak out upon waking up as a robot, fully cognizant of who he is. It’s only when his emotional stability comes into question that his doctor (Gary Oldman) decides to mess with his brain and shoot him full of dopamine, turning him into a robot zombie. Paul Verhoeven’s original is a far superior film, but this one has its merits.

Tim’s Vermeer

Penn Jillette produces and narrates, while his partner Teller directs this documentary about Tim Jenison and his obsession with Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. Vermeer painted with a photographic eye, which has led some to speculate he must’ve used mirrors and reflections to create his works. Jenison, a self-made millionaire, inventor and professed non-painter, sets about painting his own Vermeer using a mirror contraption he concocts. The results are stunning, indeed, and it appears that those who thought Vermeer used some sort of engineering trickery to create his art might’ve been correct. Is Jenison’s painting better than Vermeer? No. Is it pretty damn good for a guy who claims to have never picked up a brush before? Hell yeah. Teller’s film might be a little dull in composition, but its subject is quite the nut, making this a fascinating watch.

Veronica Mars

Thanks to an already legendary Kickstarter campaign, fans of the Veronica Mars TV show get to see their hero, the title character played by Kristen Bell, back in action. The movie doesn’t really feel like a movie at all. It looks, smells and tastes like a TV show, with a hokey and half-baked plot to go with it.

Veronica has moved to New York and is about to get a job at a law firm when old boyfriend Logan (Jason Dohring) gets into trouble. He’s the focus of a murder investigation, so Veronica puts her private investigator cap back on, leaves her boyfriend behind, and comes to Logan’s rescue back home, while also attending her high school reunion. It’s all pretty lame, but Bell is a winning movie star when she’s on her game, as she is in this film. While the murder mystery is a super dud, the cameos in the movie (James Franco, Dax Shepard, Justin Long) are fun, and the old cast getting back together has a nice feel to it. The movie won’t knock anybody’s socks off, but it will satisfy fans and perhaps inspire a few to check out the TV show, which went off the air seven years ago. Rock of ages Flannel Fish Of all the bands in all the towns—you’re better off not starting a fight at a Flannel Fish show. Not only are three of the by Laura Davis five members of the local bluesy rock ‘n’ roll band masters of the martial arts, but their shows tend to draw a lot of their high-kicking, brick smashing friends as well.

“When you go to one of our shows it’s amazing how many black belts are out there,” says rhythm guitarist Henry King.

Included in the black belt ranks is the band’s drummer, Steve Miller, as well as lead guitarist Scott Fritzinger, who’s actually a third-degree black belt. Keyboardist Kerry Berry packs her own solid karate chop as the proud owner of a purple belt.

“We’re very safe in the parking lot,” says King.

Fritzinger, Miller’s martial arts instructor at the time, was recruited first. Then came Berry, who attended the same martial arts studio. The fifth and freshest member to Flannel Fish joined in a slightly different matter, but once again, it was because Miller “knew a guy”—a guy who lived just across the street, to be exact.

“He’s the youngest,” Miller explains of 21-year-old bass player/ neighbor Austin Krater. “He’s infusing some youth into our thought process which is pretty cool.”

With Krater added to the mix, Flannel Fish’s members now range in age from their 20s to their 50s, a gap which might pose a problem to another band, but has worked out quite well for this group, partially due to their set collection being comprised mainly of cover songs. Miller said about 30 percent of their set is original tracks by the band, while the rest are covers chosen from each member’s individual influences.

“We all bring different ideas to the band, different songs we want to cover,” Fritzinger explains. “So we’ll get songs coming in from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and The White Stripes, but we’ll also get some of the stuff from the ’70s and ’80s, like Marshall Tucker Band and Traffic. We all have our different influences, but it’s really cool because there’s never been a fight about the music we play, it’s just a matter of playing it.”

Despite being a covers-heavy band, Flannel Fish still strives to put its own unique twist on the songs it plays.

“Whether it’s a cover or an original, by the time we’re done with it we sound like Flannel Fish,” King says.

As for what a flannel fish is, exactly, aside from the band itself— well, not much of anything. Which is precisely what the members were going for. But finding a meaningless name was easier said than done.

“It’s really hard to find a name that isn’t taken or has some meaning that we didn’t want to convey or couldn’t live up to—like the ass kickers or the truth tellers,” says King. “So in the age where everybody that’s ever had a band can keep that name forever, it’s tough to find one that’s meaningless.

But I think we did it.” Ω

But safety isn’t the only thing that self-defense practice has brought to the band. It’s also responsible for bringing the majority of its members together.

When Miller and King’s original garage band, Good Question, brokeup about two and a half years ago, the two musicians knew they weren’t ready to throw in the towel just yet.

Luckily, Miller’s second hobby came to the rescue.

“Steve said, ‘Don’t worry, I know a guy,’” says King, and as it turns out, Miller knew a couple of guys—and a gal.

Set in Algiers in the 1920s, a rabbi’s cat who learns how to speak after swallowing the family parrot expresses his desire to convert to Judaism. Are guys scared of politically active women? My boyfriend of two months just broke up with me over my support for animal rights, and I’ve generally had difficulty keeping boyfriends because of this. Wait, you’re trying to do some good—don’t you “deserve” a boyfriend? You, like the rest of us, deserve not to be run over by a truck. The Declaration of Independence also spells out that “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” stuff we’re all supposed to get. That’s right; you have a right to chase happiness. It doesn’t get delivered to your door. And every requirement you have for a boyfriend and every, well, nonstandard practice you have—like Wicca, being a serious Civil War reenactor, or a hobby of throwing fake blood on people in fur—narrows your options. The size of a person’s dating pool is determined by their level of hotitude factored with how hard they are to be around. (An annoying 9 might still have many romantic opportunities, though with limited staying power.)

And just a guess, but for at least some of these guys who dumped you, maybe the problem wasn’t so much your support of animal rights as it was your lack of

boundaries in expressing it. Even a guy who’s with you in principle on sticking up for Bambi and the lab rats might not be comfortable with your transforming every social gathering into an animal rights protest rally. Also consider that there’s a difference between speaking your mind and yelling it out the window.

In other words, you can refuse to ever bend your principles, or you can have a man in your life. This isn’t to say you have to start wearing snow leopard legwarmers and eating baby seal McNuggets. You probably just need to divide the world into political and social forums.

Social forums would be reserved for pleasant cocktail party conversation—even if a guy is gnawing meat off a skewer and you long more than anything to stick him in the eye with it and say, “See how you like it!”

When you start dating somebody new, ask him what his comfort zone is regarding your activism, and either respect the boundaries he needs or be honest if you can’t or won’t. If you come to see a relationship as a party of two, each of whose needs matter, there’s a good chance you’ll find a guy who’ll at least be there to bail you out of jail—maybe for years to come—until you two finally retire to the country to run a lentil rescue. Ω

tor Gary Oldman was born and raised in London. In the course of his long career he has portrayed a wide range of characters who speak English with American, German and Russian accents. He has also lived in Los Angeles for years. When he signed on to play a British intelligence agent in the 2011 film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, he realized that over the years, he had lost some of his native British accent. He had to take voice lessons to restore his original pronunciations. I suspect you have a metaphorically comparable project ahead of you, Capricorn.

Out of this world Joe Chavez is the local organizer for the NASA Space Apps Challenge, a two-day technology development event in which people around the world try to solve current problems.

His background is in computer science, and he currently runs a mobile software development company and started up Mambo Health, a crowdfunding campaign. The Space Apps Challenge will take place on April 12 and 13 in the DeLaMare Science and Engineering Library. The event will kickoff on April 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the Reno Collective.

So what’s the Space Apps Challenge all about?

That’s a lot of different challenges, but what does it all boil down to? What’s the goal?

NASA’s goal is to figure out if there are interesting solutions to problems that they have that they haven’t found yet. So they kinda categorize the challenges into five categories: human space flight, space technology,

Last year it was a pretty small event. There were several reasons for that. It mostly had to do with marketing starting late because the government did a mini shutdown, sequester thing, and they weren’t sure if they were actually going to have the event until about 10 days before it happened. So it was a smaller scale thing. We had 17 people go in, and out of the 17, nine of us [collaborated] on a remote control system for an underwater rover basically. So we participated with a team from Australia, San Francisco, UC Berkeley and New York and came up with a proposed solution to that problem.

earth-based things, robotics, and some ... not science, but farming and other types of things. The idea there is that I could work on a challenge with somebody from another city, or we can find a team here and work on challenges as a team.

Yes, there’s a lot of words like app in there.

There’s a lot of website stuff. Some of it’s data. Some of it’s actually making design hardware. Just tech-based.

How are you involved?

I used to work for NASA back in the last decade basically, and I heard about this through a friend. So I applied last year as the city of Reno, so we participated in the event last year, same time-frame. So this year came back around, and I said, let’s do it again.

Are you planning on working on a challenge this year?

You know, I’d love to, but I think we’re going to be a lot bigger this year and I’ll probably be doing more organizational things. … We’re also partnering with Microsoft this year and they’re going to handle a lot of the logistical side, so that might give me some free time.

But I have a feeling that it’s not going to turn out that way. Ω

I think it’s important because, in terms of getting people interested in science and technology, I think this is a good way

Up close and natural By now, anyone who gives a damn about cetaceans has already heard of the great gray whale story and their birthing grounds in Baja California and the recent scene that has developed around those Mexican lagoons. I just did a bit of eyewitness research on this subject (file under “It’s a bitch, but somebody’s gotta do it!”) and here’s some info that will be helpful should you ever decide to cross this one off your bucket list.

First off, what’s going on is something that I don’t think has any parallel anywhere on Earth. I just can’t think of another situation where you can interact with baby whales with the permission of their mothers. Yet, that’s precisely what is taking place every March in Mexico. People are going out in small boats called pongas to observe and hang with maternal gray whales and their brand new offspring. It sounds extraordinary and it is.

Cool. Talking about last year, what came out of it from Reno?

For app-based solutions?

Reno is one city out of 93 around the world who are participating in an international hackathon put on by NASA. It’ll be a 48-hour period, and Reno will start at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and end at 6 p.m. on Sunday. It’s a hackathon-style event, and NASA has published 50 challenges that they would like the participants to work on, to select from.

to do it because it kind of brings this big agency—NASA—out into the public. We also encourage students of high school age or older to participate, so there’s interest there.

We’re doing a collaborative event with the university this year, so it’ll be in their science library. So I think it also brings a certain amount of visibility to Reno as a place to do business for technology and other things.

Reno and Seattle are the only cities on the west coast doing this, so it kind of gives us a little status.

∫y Bruce Van Dye Shortly, we were floating along with a 35 foot momma gray and her 12-foot youngster, with these whales coming within 20 feet of the boat. That’s pretty fantastic right there, but then, what happens frequently, and what happened with us, is that the baby came over to the boat, as in right next to the ponga, at which time we could literally lean over and pet the friendly little fella.

I mean, just to be within 10 feet of these mighty mammals is awesome enough, but then to have junior slide up next to the boat and say “Howdy!

Wanna touch me?” is some pretty serious frosting on the mammalian interaction cake. Indeed, we were close enough to receive the blessings of the much desired gray whale “blow hole job.” This is where the spray from baby’s blow hole drifts into your face, and trust me, the experience of it is pretty doggone hilarious. Ω

Ignacio. The first two are the most easily accessible. All you gotta do is fly (Alaska Air) from L.A. to a very cool town on the Sea of Cortez called Loreto. There at the airport, you rent a car, and off you go. Two hours later, you’re on the Pacific side of Baja, and it’s on. We went out one day at Mag Bay and the next at Lopez Mateos, and it’s this latter spot that’s where it’s at. LM is a funky Baja town, make no mistake. Nobody’s gonna confuse it with Mazatlan or Cabo. But it’s certainly cool enough and has the services you need, namely food and lodging. And they certainly know how to take care of gringo ballenistas (in Spanish, gray whales are ballenas grises).

It cost 1600 pesos for four of us to go out for 2 hours. Expensive, right?

No way, José. 1600 pesos is about 120 dollars US, or 30 bucks apiece. Quite a fair price for a wildlife experience that is unique on our planet! Our boatman Carlos wandered about until he spied some spouting, which gave away the presence of 10-15 grays.
