Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

A couple weeks ago, I wrote about the effects of social media on local consciousness. I basically said that I don’t care what anybody 200 miles away think about what we do in this newspaper.

Those people do not support the businesses that support us, they don’t vote in the elections that determine how responsive our government is to our neighbors, they probably don’t even read my column because they’re “intentioned” shoppers looking for specific news items.

That column led to two responses from several different people. First, the one I was looking for, was “Thanks for staying focused on Reno.” You’re welcome. It’s what we do; it’s the reason we work here. The second one took me a little aback. People thought I was ignorant and didn’t understand the complexities and benefits of social media.

C’mon. I built the News & Review’s Facebook site to 6,000 “likes” before I did the costbeneft analysis and realized it was more distraction than benefit. We now have more than 8,000 likes based on what my co-publisher, John Murphy, has done. We have more than 4,400 followers on Twitter—far more than most of the people who think I’m ignorant.

I understand perfectly well how social media works, the amount of time it requires to do it well, when there’s a public relations benefit to doing it well, and what the bottom-line payback is.

One of these people, a friend and an expert and proponent of the social media stuff, told me, “If you don’t stay current on social media, you will be irrelevant,” thinking that was a coup de grace, the strength of his argument devastating to my Luddidity.

Here’s my parry: Every week, this newspaper has least 50,000 actual human readers, many of whom look at every page cover to cover. Those people support us, and they support the people who support us. If I were to change my priorities to spend time on Facebook or tweeting at 1:30 p.m. to those people who don’t read newspapers, I would truly become irrelevant. And, hopefully, unemployed.

At the last Bear Committee meeting in Reno, Nevada Wildlife Commissioner Jack Robb was asked if he believed in democracy from the perspective of majority rule over minority rule.

Commissioner Robb explained in public that “no, he like many Americans find government frustrating.” “It is like speeding,” he said. “I have received six speeding tickets and I don’t care.”

Never mind that speeding kills and that speed limits are imposed for the safety of all of us drivers.

Commissioner Robb, a government official with significant power in the regulation of hunting in Nevada, does not believe in the law.

And this libertarian mentality is the key to understanding Commissioner Robb’s approach to the regulation of hunting. In the next sentence Commissioner Robb also explained that “hunting lions with hounds is one of my core values.” For this reason, he could not vote to recommend curtailing the use of hounds to hunt Nevada bears even in the face of gutwrenching evidence of the cruelty and cowardice of this form of “hunting.”

All of us unfortunate spectators in the room had just viewed a devastating video of a hunter letting his eight hounds tear apart a live bear. But while Commissioner Robb did find the video “unsettling,” his “core value” would not let him vote on the side of decency and humanity.

So here is the reality of our Nevada Wildlife Commission. It is not about the animals and it is not about what the majority of Nevadans want in terms of how we treat and manage our wildlife. It is the right of hunters to kill what they want, when they want and in whatever manner. So bring on the hounds, snares, traps, guns etc. It is really about no government regulation.

I have honestly never heard of a core value that was along the lines of “hunting lions with hounds.” Most core values are more like honesty, respect, love, hard work, community, etc.

Re “Drug prohibition fuels society’s ills” (Let Freedom Ring, Feb. 20): I congratulate Brendan Trainor for keeping his eye on the real problem with drug use/abuse in this country.

The drug war has caused more harm to society at large than all (so-called) illegal drugs combined. The financial drain on our economy alone should be cause for alarm. The break-up of families, the extra financial burden on the already struggling portion of our society, and the ridiculous strain on an over-worked, understaffed judicial system. The irony is that this very conversation has been going on literally since the release of Reefer Madness. After all this time all they can come up with is state-imposed abstinence? Incredible ignorance!

Really folks, legalizing marijuana in a couple of states is a start, but a long way from fixing the real problem.

Start listening to voices of reason like my friend, the Honorable James Grey, in Orange County, CA who has been fighting against this foolish drug war for as long as I have, and as long as Mr. Trainor has along with millions of voices across our nation: Stop the insanity! Stop the drug war!

However evil those headlines were in promoting corporate fascism, this week you topped that with a headline about “The Collective Conscious.”

Most of your readers are familiar with Carl Jung’s concept of a Collective Unconscious: that is, a mind derived from the collective of humans and possibly all living things.

Unfortunately, the Reno News & Review has chosen to muddy the contemporary discussion: the Postulate that if a Collective Unconscious exists, then is it to itself, the Collective Conscious? That would be God! The “advance of science and math” you so proudly tout as the symbol of your justification presents the possibility of a telepathic network of all living things, connected via inter-dimensional radio transmissions like a huge computer network (the cells in your brain networking are in the image of God).

Thus the contemporary discussion about the Collective Conscious (God) is what I immediately thought your article was about. Instead, again, your headlines, while attention getting, muddy and confuse the public about intellectual social advances in favor of corporate profiteering deceptions.

The Koch Brothers would be proud of you. The Collective Conscious might have other thoughts.

Re “The Organic Food Lie” (Feature story, Feb. 13): I was hoping more would write letters in response to this obviously pro-frankenfoods piece passing for an objective article, but after looking at the published letters in the Feb. 20 issue, I realized few had made print.

One of the published letters, “Vertical Integration” wasn’t even on topic!

To begin with, the tone of this article smacks of the same “scientific” arrogance that propped-up the people who told us it was a good idea to spray DDT on our kids’ hair for lice, or that radium made great cosmetics. Just because scientists have discovered a new way to fiddle with things doesn’t mean we all have to jump on board without taking a closer look at the potential dangers. If you dig deep enough, you will have to admit there are many science-based reasons to believe that Genetically-Modified Organisms are not only weaklyunderstood in the long term but if carelessly managed, deeply dangerous.

One of the main problems with GMOs is that once they are released into the wild, it is difficult if not impossible to put the genie back in the genomic bottle. If it takes us as long to figure out their long-term consequences as it did to figure out how dangerous radiation can be, then we have about 20 years left to begin to see the full extent of the damage.

The article compares genetic engineering, where DNA is directly manipulated in ways that would never occur in nature (such as tomatoes with pig skin genes), to hybridization that is no more than plant breeding. The quotes from Mr. Kramer were at times laughable, at others chilling (regarding how wine purists are not crazy about fiddling with grapes)—“That may change in the future when they get a disease that is a problem.” So, is that what happened with the papaya? In any case someone (Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer, or DuPont) made a ton of money from that papaya disease.

Short of writing a complete essay in response to this article (which believe me, I could); it goes on to cite studies in naive and innuendo-choked ways that would make a middle-school teacher blush: “synthetic fungicides only required ... half the amount of the organic alternatives”—so? Stop to think maybe it’s because they are twice as lethal? Or, “organic foods were higher in fats”—what is that supposed to mean? Can somebody say off-topic?

Let the sunshine in Last week, the RN&R ran the first piece in a multi-part series about police use of deadly force. In the first piece of our investigations, two things became clear: There is a need for outside oversight in cases of police use of deadly force; and some government agencies treat the public’s legal right to know as optional.

In some counties in Nevada, there are citizen oversight boards to hear the evidence in cases of police use of deadly force—some through hearings facilitated by the district attorney’s office. In many states, the hearings are held at the state level, putting at least one bureaucratic step between those investigating and those being investigated.

But in Washoe County, those hearings, which are said to be held by the Officer Involved Shooting Board, are the modern equivalent of Star Chambers—secret hearings that produce no public records and allow no public oversight.

Indeed, the only window into these proceedings comes through the district attorney’s findings of legal justification for use of deadly force. Since 2000, the district attorney’s office has found legal justification for every use of deadly force that resulted in fatalities, even in at least one case—Charles Bishop on Oct. 28, 2009—involving a “fatality” in which nobody was killed. Indeed, it’s difficult to imagine a clearer example to show the need for citizen oversight than a finding of legal justification for a fatality based on an investigative report that wasn’t read.

That raises the question of, why should these hearings be secret? There’s nothing to indicate that any police use of deadly force in Washoe County in the last OPINION

They should get money for things like uniforms. Direct money? No. But there should be incentives.

14 years was questionable under the law. The opacity ignites suspicion of police where none should exist.

But that policy of secrecy seems a pattern among those who the law requires to be open in their affairs.

Nevada’s public records law is quite specific.

If a record is produced by government, and it’s not exempted by law, then it’s a public document, available to the public during office hours and at a reasonable fee.

And yet the very agencies who are mandated to prosecute violations of laws refuse to follow the laws regarding public records. If employees find the records request inconvenient, they simply ignore it, knowing that their superiors won’t discipline them or enforce the law. Arbitrary removal of information, fees that don’t conform to the law, and months-long delays for handing over records are all methods routinely used to prevent journalists and the public from getting at information.

Again, the question becomes, why would they hide, when a close review of investigations shows detailed, careful and modern pursuits of justice?

In short, some government agencies appear to believe the law exists for others. They’re above it. Heads of those agencies appear to believe they should be able to operate in the shadows like the people they pursue.

These are policies that undermine the very foundations that our democracy is built upon.

Citizens of Washoe County deserve open government. They deserve a seat in use of deadly force hearings, and they deserve efficient and public management of their records. They are getting none of these. Ω

Religious based bigotry: no bueno There was Chuck Todd interviewing Gov. Mike Pence, R-Indiana, who looked elegant and refined in a nice suit.

Then I started listening to what he was saying. By the time he got to a snide little chortle—he was denying climate change by pointing to snowy weather in the East as evidence of by the lack of global warming—I had to Sheila Leslie switch channels. How stupid does he think we are?

Over breakfast, I noticed an article about State Representative Rick Bartin, a Missouri Republican who introduced legislation to require that intelligent design and “destiny” be given the same textbook space in Missouri schools as the theory of evolution. He even had the chutzpa to declare, “I’m a huge science buff.

This [bill] is about testable data in today’s world.”

In order to believe that, you’d have to accept his new definition of a scientific theory: “an inferred explanation … whose components are data, logic and faith-based philosophy.”

It’s tempting to just roll your eyes at these Sharron Angle-like notions, but these are elected officials who presumably represent their constituents and are empowered to make decisions on their behalf.

And sometimes these bills do pass, such as Senate Bill 1062 in Arizona, allowing businesses to refuse service to gays under the guise of “religious freedom.”

Conservative groups pushed for the legislation saying it was necessary to protect their right to worship, a right that somehow would be infringed upon if they were forced to provide flowers or a cake for a gay wedding. The bill was approved by the state legislature but later vetoed by Gov. Jan Brewer after a huge backlash threatening a boycott quickly got the attention of the Chamber of Commerce and the corporate sector. Freedom to discriminate doesn’t sell a lot of products and services.

My favorite grassroots response to S.B. 1062 was Tucson pizzeria owner, Rocco DiGrazia, who posted

signs on his restaurant saying “We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to Arizona Legislators.”

But let’s not forget Nevada had its own version of this bill during the 2013 legislative session, S.B. 192, sponsored by a bi-partisan group of legislators led by Sen. Barbara Cegavske, R-Las Vegas. Despite opposition from the ACLU and women’s groups who realized it could be used to allow pharmacists to deny birth control to women because their religion opposes it, the “harmless” bill passed the Senate, 14 to 7. Thankfully, it died in the Assembly Judiciary Committee when the chairperson made clear Democratic members would never approve it.

As Arizona senators who voted for the Religious Freedom bill were renouncing their own votes and begging Gov. Brewer to veto the bill, Nevada was treated to a debate on Ralston Reports between two Republican candidates for lieutenant governor who still support the Nevada bill and urged its passage

in 2015 despite no evidence of government-sponsored religious discrimination. Neither seemed a bit worried about a possible boycott of Nevada or the impact a backlash would have on our tourism industry.

Most tellingly, neither expressed any concern about single women who might not be able to get birth control because it was against a pharmacist’s religion or a gay couple being denied services by a business owner who didn’t approve of their relationship.

The slippery slope of allowing professionals or businesses to discriminate when providing their services or goods under the umbrella of religious freedom goes against the “live and let live” philosophy of Nevada and has no place in a state with legalized prostitution, 24-hour gambling, and a proud independent heritage.

Let’s hope the Arizona experience prevents a new version of this bill from surfacing in Nevada’s legislature next year and that our elected officials stand together to oppose legalized discrimination. Ω

If only spotted owls were delicious Did you know that if you buy bison meat instead of beef you are saving an endangered species? North American Bison were in danger of extinction, but now are flourishing, largely because they can be harvested for human consumption. When local citizens have a financial stake in preservation by Brendan of a species, they are more eager to Trainor see the species survive. The private ranching of the North American Bison is an example of free-market environmentalism, based on property rights and market solutions.

Washoe County is being threatened by another kind of environmentalism, the kind that demands a big-government, centrally planned solution. The Washoe County Commission appeared stunned this January to learn the implications for the county if the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lists the sagebrush grouse as an endangered species. It is expected to decide by 2015. The Commission was only apprised by

its staff the day before the deadline to file comments with the FFWS and be recognized as a cooperating agency. The Commission expressed alarm that the listing could block Reno’s chance at the proposed Canada to Mexico I-11 highway.

There was apprehension that the listing would impact energy development, especially renewables.

Northern Washoe County is to see geothermal, solar and wind energy development spurred by the controversial legislative mandate that 20 percent of Nevada’s energy be from renewables. If the grouse is listed as endangered, energy development could be limited to areas adjacent to roads.

Nevada is not alone, as many Western states are alarmed at the amount of land the federal government could tie up. Idaho, Oregon, Utah, Montana and others are scrambling to find ways to avoid the listing of the Sagebrush Grouse as an Endangered Species. The Grouse has been intensely studied by the Nevada Department of Wildlife since 2000.

The Endangered Species Act was signed into law in 1973 by Republican President Richard Nixon. Opponents say the Act has saved very few species, while often devastating local businesses and commandeering private and public lands. Only 30 of the 9,000 listed species have recovered, and 10 have gone extinct. That amounts to a success rate of less than 1 percent with an annual budget of more than $2 billion. Listing the grouse would make Nevada’s conservation efforts completely subordinate to federal dictates.

A listing on the Endangered Species Act could provoke a firestorm of protests such as occurred when the Northern Spotted Owl was listed. The “Shovel Brigade Uprising” in Nevada was also over an endangered species, the bull trout. Many farmers in California blame the Act for exacerbating the long drought as water is diverted to

preserve small fish and amphibious species that instead could be used for crop irrigation. Now, as Nevada gets ready to assert its claim over the federal lands within its borders, 11 of its 17 counties could face a virtual federal takeover.

The Sagebrush Grouse is a wonderful bird, best known for its courting ritual, called a lek, where the males dance on ground and boom out their mating calls from large air sacs. The grouse are hunted by every species, depend almost entirely on sagebrush for sustenance, and demand large areas of open ground. Helping them involves removing or marking barbed wire fencing that they can become entangled in, cutting down non-native trees that raptors perch on, and managing the sagebrush vital to their diet. Ways must be found to encourage ranchers and energy developers to work to preserve this little bird or human food and energy needs could be what is endangered by a heavy handed federal bureaucracy. Nevadans: Food, shelter, health are lousy There’s an annual Gallup survey that has North Dakota highest in “well being” and West Virginia the most miserable. This is not based on objective measures, like number of cases of suicide, etc., but on asking residents directly how they feel about their states. For example, the state’s ranking for healthy behaviors in the Gallup survey depends not on actual figures for people who smoke or drink but on their assessment of their own behavior.

Nevada showed the biggest improvement, up 2.4 percent in people who like it here. That raised Nevada from 39th in 2012 to 26th in 2013. Gallup interviewed 1,440 Nevadans, a relatively high sample in surveys.

The state’s strengths, according to its residents, are in its workplaces and in physical health. Nevada ranked fifth in work environment and seventh in physical health.

Less impressive are the state’s rankings in life evaluation, in which residents are asked to compare their present situation with their hoped-for or expected situation in five years, and in healthy behaviors. Nevada ranked 34th among the states for life evaluation and 22nd in healthy behaviors.

Worst of all were the state’s ranking for access to basic needs—food, shelter, healthcare—and in emotional health.

Nevada placed 42nd in the nation in emotional health and 47th in basic access.

STDs rising New figures from the Centers for Disease Control show Washoe County experiencing what local health officials call a “remarkable increase” in sexually transmitted diseases (STD) in the county.

Increases were seen in chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis from 2012 to 2013. “Of note, gonorrhea and infectious syphilis cases increased 56 percent and 100 percent respectively from 2012 to 2013,” according to a county statement. Chlamydia saw a smaller increase of 5 percent.

Bandwagon Why does personal experience trump science on cannabis?

Last month, when Mayor Bob Cashell said he supported medical uses of marijuana, it was portrayed in news by reports as a change in his position.

It’s true that in his various posts, from Nevada regent to lieutenant governor to mayor, marijuana wasn’t really on his radar screen. He recalls marijuana legislation when he was presiding

And we have been unable to find any earlier news reports that quoted him on the issue. So there may have been a widespread assumption that he was against it, when in fact no one had ever asked him.

Still, he said it was the positive experience of a member of his family with marijuana that prompted him to speak out at all on the issue this year. Why, with all the decades of research that said marijuana had therapeutic uses, would he need a personal

family experience to get him into the issue?

“When something like that happens it really drives it home,” said University of Nevada sociologist James Richardson.

Richardson, author of several books on religious sects and a former partner in an opinion survey firm, says he has been taken by surprise at how rapidly opinion has changed on marriage equality and marijuana.

“It’s amazing to me how opinion is changing,” said James Richardson. “I couldn’t believe it when gay rights started happening.”

He said some people stay with long-held positions on these kinds of issues because the structure of their lives supports that stance.

“They’re caught in their upbringing,” he said. “Groups they interact with on a regular basis support those views. I’ll bet some of his [Cashell’s] friends are rolling their eyes at him right now.”

The personal experiences such as Cashell described with his family member then prompts people to break away from those stances.

“It may also motivate you to investigate,” Richardson said. “I’ve seen that happen. You sit down to the computer and Google.”

Then, as more information is consumed, the comfort zone of friends and upbringing can be overcome.

Cashell describes exactly that kind of a process. He said he was particularly influenced by a CNN program hosted by prominent neurosurgeon Sanjay Gupta.

“I guess that it was, I was one of those uneducated people who didn’t look at it open-mindedly and after seeing that story and seeing what my relatives were going through, I knew more. … I guarantee it if you watch that show it really opens your eyes as far as the medical part.”

Chris and Hugh Hempel of Reno have twins, Addi and Cassi, who have a rare disease called Niemann–Pick type C, often descibed as Children’s Alzheimer’s.

Its seizures can be reduced by a component of cannibis, and Hempel has experienced the way opinion can change rapidly within her own family.

“I think when it touches you personally, it’s a lot easier to understand,” Chris Hempel said, recalling that her parents—both in their 70s—were dead set against any marijuana therapy.

“My parents were completely against it until they understood I wasn’t trying to get my kids high,” she said. Information on therapeutic uses to which marijuana can be put helped keep peace in her family.

Richardson said the wide use of marijuana is helping to erode the opposition to it, which in turn is leading to more people coming out about their support.

“I think the marijuana thing was not as deeply held with a lot of people as the gay marriage thing,” Richardson said. “The gay rights thing is ideological, where there are a lot of people who smoke marijuana, possibly a majority of the population. So many people have smoked marijuana, and it didn’t kill them and turned out not to be a gateway drug for them. A lot of the people who are running the world right now smoked marijuana.”

He also said there is probably a bandwagon effort going on.

The more people and institutions change their positions, the safer it becomes to join them.

The rapidity of changing opinions has been reflected in opinion surveys, even in portions of the population where it might not be expected. According to a survey last year by the Public Religion Research Institute, 58 percent of white mainline Protestants and 54 percent of black Protestants favor legal marijuana. On the other hand, nearly 69 percent of white evangelical Protestants are holding firm against it.

But support for marijuana is fragile. A Brookings Institution study found, “Support for legalization, though growing markedly, is not as intense as opposition, and is likely to remain relatively shallow so long as marijuana itself is not seen as a positive good. Whether opinion swings toward more robust support for legalization will depend heavily on the perceived success of the state legalization experiments now under way—which will hinge in part on the federal response to those experiments.” As a result, any effort by political leaders to jack up the drug war again could cause marijuana sentiment to drop back down.

For some people, the issue is financial or fiscal. In Washington, the state’s Economic and Revenue Forecasting Council predicted state government would realize $51 million from marijuana sales in the 2015-17 biennium. In Colorado, Gov. John Hickenlooper said the state would likely receive more than $130 million in the next fiscal year.

Goosed Foie gras sparks controversy A black truffle and foie gras tasting was planned last month to take place at Chez Louie in the Nevada Museum of Art but was moved to a private banquet room in Circus Circus after Foie Gras Free Reno (FGFR) protested it.

Founding organizer of FGFR Billy Howard said the group contacted by Sage Leehey the museum for more information about the tasting after seeing an advertisement for it. Both Howard and Mark Estee of Chez Louie said that the s age l@ museum staff didn’t know much about the event and that Chez Louie had news review.c om scheduled it on its own. After protests from FGFR, Mirepoix USA—the Reno company hosting the tasting—cancelled it and rescheduled it at Circus Circus.

Mirepoix founder and owner Laurel Pine said she sells many products, not only foie gras, and the tasting was not centered on foie gras either, though the company does emphasize the product (its web address: www.enjoyfoiegras.com).

“Really, the focus of the event was a truffle tasting,” Pine said. “It was about black truffles, which are at their prime season right now. They happen to pair very well with foie gras, and so three of the five courses did contain fois gras, but all five of them were based around black truffles. That’s one thing that I don’t even know if people realize, that foie gras was secondary to truffles.”

Foie gras is made by infusing duck liver with fat over a short period of time by feeding ducks cornmeal and fat through a pipe.

“The animal is in extreme stress, and I have to say that anybody who thinks that kind of sickening torture is OK or fine and dandy, I really think should have their heads examined,” Howard said.

Howard said the controversy over foie gras is “no trivial matter,” noting bans on foie gras in the United Kingdom, California and various other places around the world. But it is legal in Nevada at this time, although Howard said FGFR is working towards a goal of having a ban, like California’s, in the area.

“It’s controversial, and it’s super unhealthy as well,” Howard said.

“That’s why I refer to it as junk food, haute cuisine junk food. Nobody should really be eating it for their health.”

Pine said this event opens up an important discussion about “when an activity or product is legal, under what conditions should that activity or product be banned.”

Estee also believes that this controversy should open up a larger discussion.

“The real cruelty is to other animals that are raised in factory farms,” Estee said. “Foie is an easy target. One percent of the one percent eats it.

I am more concerned with the bacon that billions eat every day. But you know what? I don’t tell people what to eat and I would not. We vote with our money. Don’t like, don’t eat it.” Ω OPINION

There is a growing debate in college sports about the possibility of paying college football players. The idea of such a thing has been in the public sphere for decades, but new issues are beginning to emerge that could challenge and shape the university landscape.

According to National Collegiate Scouting Association athletic recruiting, a “head count scholarship” is a full-ride scholarship that is not limited by any set monetary amount. An equivalency scholarship is based on percentages of full-ride scholarships.

Coaches of sports that use equivalency scholarships, not the university, determine the amount a student-athlete might get.

Star quarterback Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M, a prime example of a head count student-athlete, was selected as the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in December 2012. According to a report from ESPN, from September 2012 to August 2013, Texas A&M raised more than $740 million in donations, $300 million more than the total of any other one-year period.

Texas A&M is reaping the benefits off what is known as the “likeness” of Manziel.

This violation of the law, argued by former student-athletes, has served as the major segue to the argument of paying college football players.

Park, a javelin and discus thrower for the women’s Wolf Pack track and field team, makes sacrifices most students do not in order to afford a college education at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Dropping soccer, her favorite sport as an adolescent, for track and field was just one of the many changes Park was willing to make in order to compete at the college level. Now on cold Reno mornings, she skips sleeping in to work out in the weight room in order to prepare for those conference championships down the road.

Park’s athletic scholarship chances, along with those of the rest of the track and field team, rely on scoring points at conference meets to determine how much scholarship money is appropriated on their behalf.

Park is one of the many equivalency student-athletes who rely on appropriations that are difficult to obtain and keep in order to be a student-athlete. Football players, a large majority of head count student-athletes who have all costs covered, are at the center of a debate that full-ride scholarships are not enough anymore.

In what might go down as a monumental court case in the history of college athletics, former UCLA basketball player Ed O’Bannon filed a federal antitrust lawsuit in 2009 against the National Collegiate Athletic Association and EA Sports and Collegiate Licensing Co., for making profits off the “likenesses” of college athletes while preventing those athletes from receiving any portion of those profits. Six more college athletes have joined the class-action lawsuit, with the potential for many more joining in the future.

Current college football coaches and athletes are beginning to join the campaign for stipends.

Head football coaches from the Southeastern Conference have called for stipends so football players can pay for the things a student with a job can afford. A group of 28 football players began wearing patches during games with the acronym “APU,” standing for “All Players United” to signify a united effort to fight for football player compensation.

As it stands now, all universities must adhere to the “Commitment of Amateurism,” which declares that universities must keep all student-athletes behind the line that separates professional earnings from necessary college costs.

Cary Groth, the first woman to serve as a university athletic director, does not endorse a “pay for play” system for college sports.

Groth does, however, believe college athletes should be compensated for the money they bring in for the university through the television exposure and merchandise revenue. Groth is afraid most people do not recognize there is a difference between merely being paid to play and reimbursing athletes with some of the revenue they helped drive to the university.

“The O’Bannon case is the key case for this issue,” Groth said. “It addresses compensation for the use of a player’s likeness and image, which I agree should be compensated, but as for pay-for-play, I do not agree with that and I don’t think it will ever happen.”

gender and sports. She said she maintains a “romantic” philosophy of college athletics.

Hill, who also serves on the athletic advisory board for UNR, wrote a paper addressing the role of women in sports, so she has extensive knowledge of Title IX, but has never given much thought to how Title IX could affect the possibility of paid stipends for football players.

Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 “prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex or gender in any program receiving federal financial assistance.”

It applies to all institutions that are “receiving federal financial assistance.” Many football budgets are funded partly by subsidies, which come from student fees, institutional support and state funds.

According to a database of the total revenue and expenses of all 126 Division-I football programs from 2006-2011 generated by USA Today, 44.2 percent of Wolf Pack football revenue is derived from subsidy. This forces

In the unlikely event that a bit of pay for college athletes were to become available, where might that money for stipends come from?

One potential source to fund stipends could be conference money. UNR, which recently joined the Mountain West Conference, will pull in an estimated $2.3 million from a television rights agreement with CBS this season.

According to the contract between the MWC, CBS Sports and ESPN, any team from the conference that plays in a game with national exposure to at least 90 million people will receive a payout between $300,000 to $500,000 per game. The Wolf Pack football team is scheduled to appear on television for CBS Sports and the ESPN family a total of eight times in 2013, resulting in an estimated payout of $2.3 million.

This source of revenue is a great option for stipends for a university that is self-sufficient through donations, but such is not the case for the University of Nevada, Reno.

Groth said although the revenue generated through television deals can go to any aspect of the university, almost all funds go back to athletics to cover costs of future renovations. The future indoor track and practice football field will rely on a combination of funds from student fees and revenue funds, such as the $2.3 million from the television deal.

Another is public funds, an already existing portion of the athletic budget. A stipend of even $500 for each football players and female athlete would equate to about $140,000 a semester. This does not consider the non-football male athletes, which would add another $30,000 a semester.

It remains to be seen what the public reaction would be if such a financial burden was placed on the students of a university or the taxpayers of Nevada.

A second question to answer is how to appropriate funds for stipends if those funds were available. Hill said despite Title IX, football always comes first when deciding the athletic budget. Appropriations for stipends could possibly follow the same logic.

“Every year, athletics allocates funds for football to ensure scholarships, facilities, equipment, travel and any other costs are covered,” Hill said. “After that, the rest of the budget is left for the remaining sports.”

If football programs can justify getting more of the stipend budget out of necessity because the sport is more expensive, where is the line to be drawn? Would football pay out $5,000 while all other sports get $500?

Ever since Shane Smith was in elementary school, in Albuquerque, N.M., he wanted to play football for the University of Kansas, a school known more for basketball than its football program.

Despite not receiving an offer to play football by any of the universities in his home state of New Mexico, Smith was offered to walk on

Smith said he thinks any college athlete who helps drive revenue for a university should receive a stipend, but he sees Title IX as the main inhibitor for that possibility.

“I am all for athletes getting some kind of compensation, but it is kind of obnoxious in my eyes to think that rowing or tennis should get the same share as football and basketball,” Smith said. “It is going to be interesting to see what happens.”

Other questions facing the college football world is where to draw the line for the amount of a reasonable stipend. A report by Sean Gregory published in the Sept. 16, 2013, issue of Time Magazine suggested a $30,000 annual stipend for college football players, similar to a professional salary. Gregory only referred to some of the most powerful football programs in the country, such as Alabama, Texas A&M, Texas and Michigan for his proposal.

UNR, like the vast majority of other football programs in the nation, is no Alabama. At a university that is requiring additional fees from students to fund an indoor practice facility, a university with two tennis teams but no functional tennis courts, money for stipends is short. to say the least. If stipends were decided based on the USA Today database, UNR would not have a penny to spare.

Success in football revolves around recruiting like a cyclone, and the lack of a stipend limit could push boundaries for competitive advantages. Schools that can use the promise of a stipend as a recruiting advantage will pull in better athletes, more money and power while those that cannot afford stipends will be forced to play the same game without the same tools.

“If bigger schools can pay more they will definitely have an added lure to kids who might be more focused on the money aspect,” Smith said. “If things are set up where everyone is getting the same then I see it having little to no impact on recruiting.”

Iman Lathan is a freshman with the Wolf Pack women’s basketball team. Lathan has all expenses covered because she is a head count athlete and lives on campus, so extra stipends are not a concern to her.

“Ugly. Everything would look ugly if football players started receiving stipends,” Lathan said.

Tony Spiker, a UNR graduate student, offers a different solution for paying football players— separate the “student” from the “athlete.”

“Schools should pay them to play football,” Spiker said. “When they finish, they go pro or they can go back to college to get an education without playing football.”

While Tara Park knew since high school she wanted to compete at the collegiate level, she did not know it was going to be in track and field. Although Park nurtured her competitive fire with equestrian sports and soccer, she realized track and field was the best avenue to test her mettle against other high-level athletes— because that’s where the support is.

“Scholarships are helpful enough, and if scholarships are based on performance, that should be dedication enough and does not need a price tag,” Park said.

And so, as Park anxiously awaits that day in Laramie that may well determine her future as a student-athlete, other college athletes, adminstration and fans look on as the argument of paid stipends increasingly takes shape in locker rooms, press boxes and conference calls around the nation. Ω

Local comedy troupe the

C

omedy is serious business. This is the Utility Players anchoring principle of Reno’s Utility have been Players, an improv comedy group founded cracking jokes back in 2009 by Jessica Levity. For five for five years years, the comedy troupe has honed their craft, trying to bring laughter to the community. From humble origins on the stage at Studio on 4th to packing seats at the Pioneer Underground, the Utility Players have worked to enliven Reno’s comedy and theater scenes with improvised comedy performances and comedic theatrical productions.

Fresh off the stage from their most recent show, which concluded Feb. 22 after a three-week run, the Utility Players show no signs of slowing down as they jump back into their regular schedule of improv shows. You can catch them every second Thursday of the month at Pioneer Underground at 100 S. Virginia St.

“In baseball, ‘utility player’ is a term for someone who can play multiple positions very well,” says Levity. “In any workplace or organization, everyone loves the utility player because they’re so dependable—you can put them wherever you need them at any given time, and they’ll execute any role with as much professional brilliance as the person who’s always in that role.”

Levity felt that this idea related well to improvisational comedy, because, in essence, to be able to improvise is to be capable of anything. With that in mind, she set about gathering friends and acquaintances to form an improv group back in 2009.

“I really love anything that can make me laugh,” she says. “And I like bringing different people who make me laugh together.”

Initially, the Utility Players attempted a full variety show, which they dubbed “The Comedy Cabaret.” They found their stage at Studio on 4th, 432 E. Fourth Street, a small venue that often features local performers trying to find an audience. They developed new sketches, routines and musical bits centered on a different theme each week. It required an immense

amount of time and energy and throughout their first months together they were working every night of the week to produce new shows. Early on, their performances had rather sparse turnouts.

“Our shows consisted of three of us up on stage and even less people in the audience,” says Levity. Despite the size, the players describe their audiences as forgiving and eventually they found a loyal following. They were just pleased to have a platform for their art.

Six months into their endeavor they decided to move in a different direction. They left Studio on 4th behind, along with their variety show format, and for a time were without a home for their show.

Without a venue, they also found themselves without as many resources. Focusing on a more pared-down format out of necessity, the trio began to orient themselves toward a more improvised format.

Improvisation allowed the Utility Players to be more mobile with their performances. There is little to no production cost and there is no reliance on sets or large performance spaces. Honing their improvised comedy skills helped them through

their stint as a homeless comedy troupe.

In 2011, they found a new home at Good Luck Macbeth Theater, a 40-seat theater that, at the time, was located in downtown Reno. With a larger venue came a larger audience.

After almost two years developing their act, the Utility Players had grown a substantial following. By spring 2011, they were selling out shows and having to turn people away at the doors. Levity recalls it being a bittersweet experience, and she realized that they needed a new home to accommodate their larger audiences. It was around that time that they caught wind that The Pioneer Underground was being leased with the intention of turning it into a comedy club.

“We were absolutely terrified to book a venue that was four times the size of what we knew we could handle,” said Levity, recalling their preparation to move their show yet again. Those fears proved unfounded. In May 2011, they became the first sold-out show at the Pioneer Underground.

In five years, the Utility Players have come from being a tiny group of friends trying to do comedy to being a growing, thriving cast of

nine with a large production team backing them up. They have a die-hard group of followers who hardly miss a single show that they have lovingly named “The Utilitarians” and a cast and crew that are constantly growing with people looking to lend their support and folks who are interested in performing.

Christopher Daniels, a player of the group, describes what creates a dedicated audience: “There’s an exchange that happens in an improv show. As opposed to a play or a musical where audiences are mere spectators, audiences at an improv show co-create the show with us with their suggestions, with their participation in some games, and with their energy. In improv, our audience is an invaluable part of the show.”

More recently, the Utility Players have been working on expanding their repertoire. Along with their monthly performances, periodically the troupe creates and puts on theatrical shows.

The content ranges from murder

mysteries to game show parodies.

They keep their audience on their toes with original productions and improv comedy.

“We keep morphing and challenging ourselves; we keep creating new games and changing others, trying to find the perfect combination that will make the audience laugh,” says Ian Sorensen, a veteran player of the troupe. Right on the tail of their most recent enterprise, the Utility Players already have another one in the works. Daniels, who wrote the last three mystery performances, mentioned finishing up his newest project, “Dirty Laundry,” that he hopes to have on stage by the end of this year.

“The art scene in this city is blowing up, and comedy is a big part of that boom,” says Sorensen.

The Utility Players are something of a rags-to-riches story. The members have a love for performance and passion for comedy. If laughter is the best medicine, the Utility Players provide a large dose. Ω

under his belt in 2014. And that’s to say nothing of his commissioned art, which covers everything from skateboards and album jackets to city storm drains.

Chisholm’s latest exhibition, Battle Born Hues, runs through March 28 at the Sierra Arts Gallery. It’s a big one for him, and an ode to all things Nevadan in honor of the sesquicentennial.

Silver State iconography figures in, of course, as do landscapes, influential characters and some coy women—starlets, showgirls and friends of his, caught forever in acrylic spray paint. Native animals are in his lens, too, from the mustang to the mountain bluebird to the desert tortoise.

“It’s the state reptile,” Chisholm says of the latter, which he’s rendered on a small canvas with a Confederate cap on its back.

“No one knows about that, but it really is.”

The Reno native has honed his craft since doodles filled the margins of his grade-school notebooks, but he hasn’t been big in the arts scene for long. It was just a couple of years ago that he got his launch, more or less, through a local chapter of the

Chisholm’s work, which “combines color, whimsy and movement with pop culture and media images, creating fresh visual and social perspectives for our generation.”

Chisholm is a collaborator, she added in an email, and a mentor to his peers.

Civically motivated, too.

“He is more than an artist, he is a person in the community who I respect,” Eagan says. “One who works tirelessly with the red tape of publically funded projects to beautify our town for his children and our children, like the storm drains down by the waterfront.”

And yes, those are his.

“We’re proud to have his work in our gallery,” says Sierra Arts executive director Stacey Spain, who plans to nab the tortoise painting for her own collection.

“Part of it is the idea that you have the artist connection,” she says, “and part of it is that you have a visceral connection to the art. It brings you joy. I think it’s OK for a piece of artwork to just bring you joy.”

Ol’ Doc Johnson’s quote is prominently displayed at Brickie’s Tavern, and the friendly service my wife and I experienced during our recent visit would have done the good doctor proud. Originally opened in 1956 as a neighborhood market, the atmosphere is informal, featuring a single room with space for about 30 guests split between the bar and table seating. The open grill/kitchen is directly adjacent to the bar, a one-person operation that has no trouble keeping up with a dozen orders in fast succession.

Despite the fact it’s more bar than grill, kids are welcome and it’s not uncommon for entire families to visit the tavern for a meal.

The crowd at Brickie’s enjoys the old-school pub atmosphere.

Brickie’s tavern is open 8 a.m. to midnight. Breakfast is served Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to noon.

and gravy with eggs and your choice of meat, a chili-cheese omelet, and a gravy-smothered chicken-fried steak with eggs. All of these come with potatoes and toast.

After listing the specials, our server noted, “Just don’t ask for substitutions. Curt hates that.” I had to chuckle at this because I agree wholeheartedly with the chef. I’m no fan of picky eaters, plus, this joint is pretty busy during breakfast. Just keeping up with the regular orders is enough for one person to manage.

My wife ordered the biscuits, and I got the chicken-fried steak, which are two dishes we often order to evaluate a new breakfast experience.

We shared a nibble of each other’s meal, then shared a momentary sense of, “I should have ordered what you did.” The eggs were cooked perfectly over-medium, the cubed and seasoned fried potatoes were far better than most I’ve been served (crispy outside, fluffy inside), the bacon was thick-cut and crispy without being overcooked, but, holy moly, those biscuits were a real surprise. Huge, fluffy, delicious. The country gravy was pretty good, if a bit blander than I’d like, but that’s what the salt and pepper shakers are for, right? The chicken-fried steak had great flavor, but required a little more effort to cut with a fork than the best examples of this diner classic. Still, it’s among my current list of Top Five chicken-fried steaks available in Reno, and it’s not like I had to resort to using a knife. Or left a single bite on my plate.

I’ve heard good things about their hash as well as the chili-cheese omelet, so a return visit—or 12—is definitely in the cards. Brickie’s is the kind of place that just exudes an “only in Nevada” vibe. I know there are plenty of great “greasy spoons” across the country, but not with a 24-7 bar culture where you can party all night, then get a stick-to-your-ribs hangovercuring breakfast the next morning in the same place you got hammered.

I’ve heard good things about their burgers and chili dogs, but our visit was all about the breakfast menu.

Served only on weekend mornings, the menu is short and simple (ranging between $8-$11 a plate) with four-egg omelets, huevos rancheros, breakfast sandwiches, and the classic plate of eggs with meat of your choice (ham, bacon, sausage, hamburger steak), fried potatoes and toast. Other than adult fare from the bar, beverage options include your basic diner-style coffee and a selection of fruit juices that double as mixers during cocktail hour (orange, cranberry, grapefruit, tomato, and Clamato). However, my eyes were immediately drawn to the large print on the menu declaring, “Ask about our breakfast specials,” which is where the real action is.

Take flight Non-Stop Liam Neeson continues his relatively new career as the thinking older man’s action hero with Non-Stop, essentially Taken on a plane. This time it’s a big flying mechanical bird being kidnapped as opposed to an overacting, so-obviously-not-a-teenager Maggie Grace getting abducted.

I sort of hate the Taken movies, so my by writing the above statement might imply Bob Grimm that Non-Stop stinks, too. It doesn’t. It’s one of those trashy movies that you can’t help bgrimm@ newsre view.c om but like because all of its implausibility and overwrought performances combine into something strangely entertaining. There’s nothing wrong with a little well-done trash cinema.

passages of the movie slowly reveal what we already know from every commercial for this movie: Bill is a U.S. air marshal, and he’s going to have a dilemma on this particular flight. His plane … is going to be taken!

The twist here is that a hijacker, through text communications and various manipulations, will make it actually look like Bill is the one hijacking the plane in the eyes of the passengers and the media, who get to see some of the onboard action via YouTube.

The film has your basic assortment of terrorist suspects, everybody from the seemingly sweet female seat neighbor (Julianne Moore classing up the place) to the mysterious fellow (Scoot McNairy) who asks for a light before Bill boards the plane. There’s also a Muslim doctor, a grouchy NYC cop, a computer programmer, suspicious flight attendants and so on. It’s a gold star for you if you can figure out who is bad before the big reveal.

One twist after another hits you, and the movie goes beyond ridiculous into some forgivable zone where you get the feeling it’s all being done with a big wink at the audience. The folks making this movie must’ve been aware that their little thriller is completely nuts, right?

This is the second time Neeson has teamed with director Jaume Collet-Serra, who helmed the also ridiculous but far less fun Neeson vehicle Unknown, and the creepy Orphan. As he did with Orphan, Collet-Serra does a decent job keeping his audience off balance when it comes to the mystery in Non-Stop.

The overall feel of the movie is like a ’70s disaster flick, like Airport or, better yet, Airport ’77, the cinematic piece of awesomeness that saw a 747 sink in the ocean, with the plane staying intact and the survivors searching for options to reach the surface, eventually opting for really big balloons.

If there was a missed opportunity here, it’s that the producers should’ve thrown in a couple of disaster film vets to augment the cheese factor. How much more fun could this have been with, say, people like Robert Hays (Airplane!), Robert Wagner (The Towering Inferno) or Richard Roundtree (Earthquake) occupying some seats.

That would’ve been a sweet, daring way to acknowledge this film’s goofiness and obvious obligations to outlandish ’70s disaster epics.

Non-Stop is one of those movies that you will stop on if you are flipping through channels a few years from now, and you just want to be entertained while switching your brain off. It won’t win any awards for smarts, but it will keep you riveted and Neeson makes for good company in this kind of crap sometimes.

There are plans for Taken 3, and time will tell whether Bill Marks gets another air adventure. I would rather see Neeson drunk on a plane again before watching him have another one of those stupid “You’re going to be taken!” phone conversations with family members. Ω

Well, shucks. Kevin Costner and Hailee Steinfeld deliver good performances as father and daughter in this hot mess from sloppy director McG. Costner plays a Secret Service Agent who finds out he’s dying of cancer, and he wants to make his last days on Earth count. So he reconnects with his daughter (Steinfeld) and his ex-wife (Connie Nielsen) in Paris while taking on one last assignment. That last assignment is giving him a lot of money, and an experimental drug that only exists in the movies that could extend his life. Costner is on his game here, and Steinfeld holds her own in the scenes they share together. Unfortunately, the movie is all over the place tonally. Sometimes it’s a thriller, sometimes it’s a comedy, and so on. There’s also terrible editing choices and lousy sound editing to boot. Amber Heard shows up as Costner’s boss trying to pull off some sort of femme fatale routine that feels as if it should be in another movie. Only Costner and Steinfeld save this thing from being totally awful.

About Last Night

Don’t just file this one away as another unnecessary remake of an ’80s film, because Kevin Hart and company make the latest adaptation of David Mamet’s play Sexual Perversity in Chicago a wildly entertaining endeavor. Hart, who lights up any film he shows up in even when they stink, plays Bernie, a player who finds himself in a relationship with the fiery Joan (Regina Hall). While Bernie and Joan experience a wild rollercoaster ride of sex and spats, Bernie’s best bud Danny (Michael Ealy) winds up dating Joan’s best friend Debbie (Joy Bryant). The two have a one-night stand that turns into a long-term relationship replete with all the problems of a relationship that started up way too fast. The main reason to see the film is Hart and Hall, who are a crack up under the direction of Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine). However, Ealy and Bryant make for an appealing and intriguing screen couple, so the movie doesn’t nosedive when the action switches to them. It’s better than the original, which starred Rob Lowe, Demi Moore and flippin’ James Belushi. Screw that movie.

Frozen

I have to admit I was more into the strange Mickey Mouse short that precedes this musical adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Snow Queen” than the actual feature. It features retro Mickey busting out of a black and white film and becoming 3-D as he battles a bad guy kidnapping Minnie. It’s worth the price of admission. As for the actual feature movie, Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel have wonderful voices, and the visuals are fun to behold in this middle-of-the-road Disney fare. It has a lot of music—some of it quite good, some of it, well, not—and a beautiful look to it. For recent Disney animation, my vote goes to Tangled for best, but that’s not to say this one is a letdown.

It’s OK. Just OK. It’s about on par with Pixar’s latest, Monster’s University. It’s fun to watch, but not altogether memorable.

The Lego Movie

Fast paced, frequently hilarious, and visually fun, this is the sort of movie we’ve come to expect from Pixar, one that appeals to both kids and adults on many levels.

It’s also notable that it isn’t a Pixar film, but a product of the still formidable but inconsistent Warner Brothers animation wing. The plot follows Emmet (Chris Pratt), a “generic” builder as he goes about his homogenized life, building structures under strict deadlines, listening to the same song (Tegan and Sara’s terrific “Everything is Awesome”) every minute of the day, and following the rules of the omnipotent President Business (Will Ferrell). President Business demands conformity in a decidedly socialistic way, but he keeps everybody at bay by promising Taco Tuesdays. Things change instantly when Emmet meets Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), who reveals to Emmet that he’s living in a pre-programmed world, and there’s the possibility for real life beyond its walls (echoes of The Matrix and Terry Gilliam’s Brazil). Emmet joins forces with Wildstyle and her extremely cool boyfriend, Batman (Arnett) to take down the establishment and restore freewill. The Lego Movie is a bit exhausting at times, but at least the constant stream of activity is laced with super intelligence rather than bombastic, vapid visuals. It’s a cliché, but I’ll say it: “Fun for the whole family!”

The Monuments Men

Director George Clooney’s war epic about historians racing to save art from the Nazis looks and feels like it was just taken out of a time capsule buried in 1958. It’s quite breezy for a war movie, peppered with laughs provided by a strong cast including Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban and John Goodman as men trying to thwart Hitler’s plan for a giant museum. It has one of those whistle-infused soundtracks, and it doesn’t hurt that Clooney and Dujardin look like Errol Flynn and Gene Kelly. The movie moves briskly, and is perhaps a bit too weightless for a movie of such heavy subject matter. It also has a useless subplot involving Damon and Cate Blanchett.

Still, Clooney has great command of the camera here, the ensemble (especially Murray and Goodman) shines, and it’s fun to watch. This is an interesting piece of World War II history, and it’s good that somebody has made a decent movie to cover this chapter of Hitler insanity.

Pompeii

If ever there was a good setting for a decent movie featuring lots of lava, I would think the story of how Mount Vesuvius blew would be intriguing. However, if you put Paul W.S. Anderson in charge of such a movie, well, you will probably end up with a pile of crap. Anderson has a way of destroying interesting premises with his sloppy directorial hand. For prime examples of how he screws things up, see Alien vs. Predator, Resident Evil: Afterlife, The Three Musketeers or Death Race. Or, better yet, don’t see them. Anderson takes the historic eruption and makes it the basis for what he probably hoped would be his Titanic. He has a love story, he has a lot of people scurrying for their lives, and he even has mournful female vocals that sound a lot like Celine Dion. What he doesn’t have are magnetic stars, decent special effects or a sense of pacing or continuity. When the volcano finally erupts, people have time for serious conversation, various sword fights and whatnot. I don’t think so, fellas. It should be noted that this film contains the very worst Kiefer Sutherland performance ever put to film, so it accomplishes something in the end.

Robocop

RoboCop is a remake that totally rewrites an original in a way that won’t piss off its legions of fans. Joel Kinnaman steps into the role of Alex Murphy (played in the late ’80s original by Peter Weller), a Detroit cop in the year 2028 who gets himself blown up after causing too much trouble for a criminal kingpin. Murphy, with the permission of his wife (Abbie Cornish) has his life saved by being placed into an armored endoskeleton with the purpose of making him a law enforcement superhero. In the original, Murphy (well played by Peter Weller) started his crime crusade not really knowing who he was, with memories suppressed. He eventually figured out his identity and solved his own murder. The new film drastically diverts from the original, having its Murphy freak out upon waking up as a robot, fully cognizant of who he is. It’s only when his emotional stability comes into question that his doctor (Gary Oldman) decides to mess with his brain and shoot him full of dopamine, turning him into a robot zombie. Paul Verhoeven’s original is a far superior film, but this one has its merits.

The Wind Rises

In director Hayao Miyazaki’s enchanting and somber The Wind Rises, Jiro, a character based on one of the designers of WWII Japanese bombers, shares his dreams with Caproni, an Italian airplane builder who intends to retire near film’s end. As it turns out, The Wind Rises is allegedly the last animated feature from Miyazaki, the legendary animation director of such films as Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and Ponyo. Like the grandiose Caproni, the builder of airplane dreams in his latest feature, the 73-year-old Miyazaki plans to call it a day. If this is, indeed, his final film, he’s going out on a very high note, for sure. The film is a bittersweet mix of the joy of creation dream fulfillment, and how innocent dreams can sometimes foster terrible destruction. Miyazaki avoids politics for the most part, but there’s an underlying sadness in Jiro and the movie.

It’s a beautifully made, complex film, far more than your average animated movie. The English dubbed version features the voices of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt and Martin Short.

Power trio Whatitdo.

“The band name is Whatitdo., just one word with a period at the end for an important reason,” says bassist Alex by Brad Bynum Korostinsky. “Whatitdo. is a statement, not a question.” bradb@ Though Whatitdo. has been around newsreview.c om since 2008, it has kept a fairly low profile as far as promotion and social media, especially when compared to some of the band members other projects. Korostinsky and guitarist Mark Sexton both play in the Mark Sexton Band, and of the bigger and busier bands of the local scene, and drummer Aaron Chiazza played in the metal band Beard the Lion and is the current Ringo in the long-running Beatles tribute act Rain.

no vocals so it’s even more stripped down, and understanding how to and not to fill up space when everyone is so exposed.”

“That’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned in this band, not being scared and just digging in,” says Sexton. “I apply it everywhere I play now.”

The three musicians also back singer-songwriter-guitarist John White in his band, the John Whites. But Korostinsky describes Whatitdo. as a “musician outlet,” a place for the musicians to explore musical possibilities and flex their chops. And though they improvise their solos, the songs are not endless groves but are carefully written, with recognizable structures, memorable melodies and often with compositional humor.

“We like to trick people,” says Sexton, referring to the tunes’ musical fake-outs and misdirections. But Whatitido. isn’t a joke band. It’s a serious band with a good sense of humor. And that expressive musical chicanery requires real musicianship.

The song titles are sometimes left-field pop culture references, like “Hatchi Ju Hatchi,” a line from the SNL sketch when Chris Farley appeared on a Japanese game show.

Korostinsky describes the hard-edged funk tune “Machete Man” as “a song that sounds like a guy with a machete just chopping down a path.”

But, despite the set structures, the musicians say that the songs are different every time they play them.

“We still change songs we wrote in 2008,” says Chiazza.

Given that ever-changing approach, perhaps it’s not surprising that the group’s new debut album, Live at St. James Infirmary, is, as the name implies, a live recording at the Reno bar. They will perform even newer versions of the songs at the Holland Project on March 13. Ω

Whatitdo. morphs, surges and pulses among the three points of its flux capacitor: funk, rock and jazz.

The all-instrumental trio vacillates from jazz-funk to jazz-rock to funkrock. They lay into funk grooves, and rip solos that rock, with enough instrumental virtuosity to appeal to jazz heads.

“When we first created this band, we wanted to create music that was beyond our playing ability,” says Sexton. “This band has forced me and Aaron and Alex to become better players because we’re writing stuff that’s beyond what we can do.”

“Some of these songs, if this was Guitar Hero, would be on the difficult level—for me at least,” says Korostinsky. “Some players would be like, ‘Oh, that’s nothing.’”

Chiazza says that the trio format forces the musicians to really hone their skills—“especially when there’s

LunaFest: A Film Festival

The University of Nevada, Reno’s 2013-2014 Performing Arts Series concludes with a performance by the all-female, Irish-American musical group. Taking their name from a traditional Irish jig, the group began in 1985 with a series of concerts in New York City that celebrated the rise of female musicians in a once male-dominated scene. While initially hailed as the first all-women traditional music and dance ensemble, they soon established themselves as musicians and performers without peer. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, at the Nightingale Concert Hall inside the Church Fine Arts Building, 1335 N. Virginia St., at UNR. Tickets are $5-$24. Like the original NadaDada event held each June, the art show features Reno-based artists who will use up to 16 rooms and other interior spaces of a hotel as temporary galleries and exhibits. The second annual winter art happening will take place at the Morris Burner Hotel, 400 E. Fourth St., coinciding with the hotel’s grand opening. The event kicks off on Friday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with an official opening ceremony at 7 p.m. that will feature music, poetry and fire spinners. When Harry met Hairy My girlfriend of six months just stopped shaving her legs and armpits. I think she is so sexy—except for this.

Recently, I asked her whether she’d shave again, and she snapped that shaving is time-consuming and the idea that women should remove their body hair comes from anti-feminist propaganda. I don’t know about that. I just like seeing female legs and armpits without a bunch of dark furry hair cover. Do I get to ask again?

It’s great when your girlfriend reminds you of somebody exotic out of the movies—when that somebody is Mila Kunis or Eva Mendes, not Chewbacca.

As for your girlfriend’s notion that the defurred look traces to “anti-feminist propaganda,” way back before there was Cosmo, the magazine, there was Ovid, the Roman poet, advising women looking for love: “Let no rude goat find his way beneath your arms”—don’t let your underarms get stanky like a goat—“and let not your legs be rough with bristling hair.” Archeological evidence, including hair-scraping stones and an impressive set of Bronze Age tweezers, suggests that women— and often men—have been shaving, depilating and yanking out body hair since at least 7,000 B.C. In the early 1500s, Michelangelo sculpted David, making him look like he was too busy spending three weeks at the waxer to slay Goliath. And these days, male bodybuilders also remove their body hair, lest their admirers have to peer through the hair sweater to find the pecs and abs.

Is there a double standard at play here? Sure there is—if you’d shave a Fidel Castro beard to be more attractive to her but she refuses to shave her Fidel Castro legs.

Let her know that you aren’t looking to turn her into a razor slave of the patriarchy—you’re just trying to keep your sex life, and, in turn, your relationship, alive—and ask whether there’s anything you could do to be more manhunky for her. This is just what you’re supposed to do in a relationship—make that extra effort to please your partner, even if it takes, oh, five minutes every few days to run a razor over your legs and pits.

She can still rebel against the patriarchy in other ways, like by going around in snarky T-shirts and blogging about how leg shaving is an obvious plot to keep women in the shower and out of the House of Representatives.

The bottom line, for you and many other men, is that it’s really sexy to run your hand through a woman’s hair—just not the hair on her ankles. Ω

Taking care of business John Jesse is sort of like a yeti around Reno: quiet, unassuming, but a bit larger than life. It seems everyone knows of him, but you’ve kind of got to be where he is to get to know him. His business is J3 Designs, and he can be reached on the web at johnjesse.info or on the phone at 453-8222.

You’re well known around town.

How did that come about?

I was in the restaurant business for a good number of years.

What restaurants?

The first restaurant I ever had was called the Cochon Volant. Relatively unknown, and then Tim Helion and I and another partner built Deux Gros Nez. And right after that, I went to work on Pneumatic Diner. And those were the restaurants I mostly started.

You were like 20 years ahead of your time with Deux Gros Nez. Or maybe you were 20 years behind your time because it seems like there was a period that went from the Beatniks to this modern coffee craze, and you were right in the middle of that time period. What inspired the three of you to do that?

I worked at a place in Scottsdale, Arizona, for a little while. I liked the machinery that went along with espresso coffee, and one day I met a guy who was actually one of the Elles of Elle Cafe fame, if anyone knows of them. He came to the store, and he talked to me, and he really inspired me, and he’s an Italian guy, and his family has been the principal roaster in Italy for three generations. And he told me a whole lot about the technology of brewing coffee. I got really interested in that. So when we came to Reno, there was no place to get a croissant or a decent espresso. Period.

There was nothing. So we decided we would try and do that. And we looked around San Francisco and the Bay Area a little bit, to see what other people had done. And we found a cigar and coffee place in San Francisco— Mario’s or something like that—and that just had that feel, that community, small, cozy kind of feel. And that’s what I based the Deux on when we designed it.

hard time feeling aligned, and the diner was not a good operation at all. It had never had a manager. I’d never been a manager in our company, and so we decided I would take the diner, and he would take the Deux. I did well with the diner and ended up owning the building I’ve got [720 Tahoe St.], based on that. It was going to be the new diner, because the diner was so successful we were going to try to expand, but Tim—[Deux Gros Nez] just beat him up, and he wanted to get out of the business.

What do you do now?

[Laughs] Odd jobs. Really. Technically, I do odd jobs. I do hydronic heat work, boiler work. I’ve been doing a little solar lately. I do fabrication. Fabrication led me to work on electric cars. I’ve got a really good cross-set of skills, so electric cars are a really good fit for me. I can do the metal fabrication; I know enough about the electrics in them to be able to work in them. Some architectural metal fabrication, but I don’t get a lot of that kind of work. Ω

I did not close it. Tim and I were having a

You see that gigonderous tower standing out there in the middle of the raw desert, about 25 miles north of Tonopah? That ain’t no new traffic control tower for secret stealth jets or the world’s biggest cell tower from Verizon. That’s the centerpiece of OPINION

this project, a 550-foot-tall tower that will allow for the creation, transmission and utilization of a product called molten salt. With this stuff, energy can be stored as heat during the night, which means that solar power created during daylight hours can be distributed during darkness, and that’s a trait that many power companies seem to find quite desirable.

So Crescent Dunes has some serious potential to be hot, hip, and happening, and it’s on a lot of radars. A whole bunch of folks will be looking on with great interest as construction crews finish and the 17,000 mirrors that will collect the heat of the sun and make salt molten get cranked up. If this hot goop works the way it’s supposed to, this one plant in the middle of the boondocks will produce 500 gigawatts of electricity a year, which is the equivalent to 12 percent of the juice that annually pours out of the transformers of Hoover Dam. Those are numbers capable of making a very solid and positive impression. The project, as you can imagine,

is doing wonders for Tonopah’s economy. Right now, 600 guys are out there building this extraordinary facility, and when the operation is up and running (sometime this summer), there will be 45 full-time jobs at the CDSEP, overseeing the machinery of molten salt. The owner of this project is a company called Solar Reserve. The budget for this plant should come in at around $900 million.

So is this a first look at something that will be utterly huge in terms of Nevada’s eventual re-positioning of itself? Will this extreme new technology allow Nevada to morph from 20th century Sin Country to 21st century Sun Country? I’m down! If molten Morton’s is where it is at in the near future, let’s not be slow. Let’s fire up about 47 of these suckers throughout the state and start blazing brave new trails into a brave new world. Ω

Happy Hour

an there be two lovelier words put together than ‘happy’ and ‘hour?’ I think not. I’m not a big drinker, but those words pique my interest. Pictures of relaxed people laughing, drinks in hand, dance in my head. We are SO lucky to be one of the states that hasn’t made it illegal to partake of libations at a certain time of day and at a reduced rate, otherwise termed – Happy Hour. Yes, around 20 more ‘pure’ states believe that these lovely, social hours promote over-consumption.

Strangely, one of the most drinkloving countries in the world prohibits happy hours, as well – Ireland. But just as those before us believed, I see it as a time to relieve stress and let my hair down a little.

Happy hours have been around at least since Prohibition and WW1. It was Naval slang for a time when the sailors would let loose a bit – participating in boxing matches or other athletic endeavors to boost morale and break up the monotony of sealife. And then during the driest time in our history, it became the thing to wet your whistle at a Speakeasy or friends home before going out for dinner. Thus began the Happy Hour.

Some are literally just an hour while most are two to four. I believe setting aside just ONE hour ruins the innate, relaxed nature. Many people come straight from work to decompress from the trials and tribulations of the job. A good Happy Hour is an opportunity to come as you are and break your routine or maybe mingle with coworkers in a relaxed setting.

It’s also a fabulous time to meet new, diverse people.

All walks of life converge on Happy Hours like the proverbial African watering hole, from garbage guys to CEOs. It’s an event most can frequent easier and more often than a big night out on the town. And lower prices are a great reason to try a new drink.

The happiest of Happy Hours are those you can relax at with a group of people that make you smile. Be that at a casino, dive bar, cantina, shnazzy bar or your own backyard.

Here’s my recipe for the perfect Happy Hour (take heed, local haunts): It should be multiple times per week, twice a day.

Optimal time would be 6-8p and 11p-1a. Beer, well and at least three food choices should be half off. Yes, half off. Throw in a special on one unique drink, something most people wouldn’t normally try. Smaller food portions are fine, but don’t just offer wings, please. I want to walk into a clean, lively spot with courteous staff, but this should be a given. If you have a patio or roof or other cool nook or cranny, use it.

Now, hand me my fruity drink.

I’m ready to wind down from my workday. Oh - and if the halfoff drink comes with a sweet, hot dude, my Happy Hour is complete.

The Party Bus: A Nightclub on the Road

ore than two dozen friends are lounging on couches, listening to music and enjoying some cocktails. They’re also cruising down Highway 395. Cheers! They’re on a party bus. “It’s like taking a nightclub on the road, literally,” said Danell Wilson-Perlman, co-owner of Reno Tahoe Limousine and Reno Tahoe Transportation. With U-shaped seating, interior lighting, a bar, a big TV -- and a hired chauffeur for a designated driver -party buses are limousines on a larger scale.

Most situations require an on-call driver, but sometimes the bus can be rented for two hours before and two hours after an event. “Every situation is unique,” she said. “We’re family owned and operated, and we work with each case individually.” One party bus can be less expensive than a slew of taxis. “It’s totally worth it to get the bus,” said Brandi Anderson, 38, who had a

memorable night out when her friends hired the 16-passenger bus for her birthday. “If you have enough people going, it ends up being way less than cab rides.”

Anderson and her friends used a bus for a Downtown Reno pub crawl. “The convenience of that was incredible,” she said. “We were able to get from South Reno to downtown and back home safely.” The eight couples on board started having fun right away, lip-synching to songs on their own iPod during the drive. “It’s got cool lighting like a limousine on the inside, and there are big couches,” Anderson said. “It’s very comfortable. And we were able to bring a cooler, so we had our own cocktails on the bus. “You don’t have to shoot your entire budget inside a bar.”

Communication with the driver went well, too.

Anderson said they always knew where he was parked and although they had his cell number, they never needed to call him. “I thought it was awesome,” she said. “We’ve been talking about how we need to get another one of these events on the books for 2014.”

In fact, it’s detrimental. The cooler spots prefer more coverage but still lots of swank. The big cities want your attire to add to their general aesthetic.

I’ve worked almost every venue from high energy, fast pace night clubs to low key mom and pop joints and in every situation there’s a level of interaction with the customers and energy that is undeniable.

DO YOU COMPETE? I participated in the 2013 Bombay Sapphire Most Imaginative Bartender Competition, it was my first competition and I had only been bar tending for a matter of months before entering. I took third place for Reno and was incredibly happy, considering my situation.

DO YOU COMPETE? Not currently. Years ago in Las Vegas, I entered contests and enjoyed experimenting with different alcohol and mixes. I won an in-house competition while working for the N9ne Group at the Palms. I created the “Ghostini” for the [Palms Las Vegas] Ghostbar.
