Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Our entry period for our first poetry contest will end Feb. 28. We’ve had a really large response. While I’ve only read poems when the circumstances warranted it—like when they’ve been incorrectly submitted— it seems as though the poetry I have read hasn’t been horrible.

Anyway, for the rules and how to correctly enter, see the ad on page 29. *** I’m dismayed by people who propose to teach without knowing the subject matter. I’m taking an online social media and journalism class in which an instructor made a restrictive statement about ethics that’s just wrong. Ethics are part of a code, not a synonym for morality.

For example, ethical lawyers can do things, like defend rapists and murderers, that I would find immoral. Ethical scientists can do things, like spray perfume in bunnies’ eyes, that I would find immoral. Ethical journalists can do things, like bring hesitant victims into the public eye, that I find immoral but would do in a heartbeat. So don’t tell me a journalist is unethical or a practice is ethically mandated, unless you can point at the tenet on a Code of Ethics to which that particular journalist subscribes.

Otherwise, I’m ethically required to tell you you’re ignorant. *** There are communities within communities within communities. I consider my community northwestern Nevada and northeastern California, and I consider everyone in it part of my community. Just stick a compass in my head and inscribe a circle with a 100-mile radius. That includes people I’ve never met. I make almost all my editorial decisions based on this simple premise.

While it’s possible that someone in Calcutta, Sydney or New York City may opt into our virtual community, I don’t care what they think of what we do here in Reno. I don’t care if they read us online; I don’t care if they like us on Facebook. I care about our local artists, businesses, readers and haters. I like having a lot of readers, but I don’t care to struggle to engage big numbers of irrelevant people.

Re “Block that Koch” (Notes from the Neon Babylon, Feb. 13): Here’s a concrete reason to nix the XL pipeline: their abominable safety record. We all remember the BP debacle; what most people don’t remember is the pipeline break in Kalamazoo, Mich., at the same time. There was so much flap about BP, that the media spotlight never focused on Michigan, just kind waved in that general direction for a broadcast or two, as millions of gallons of oil trashed 30 miles of the river. This is the same pipeline the Keystone PR machine assures has been appropriately patched, and ready for a full load of that tar sands goo.

Re “Hands off the Kochs” (Letters to the Editor, Feb. 20): “Tis better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.” It’s the opinion page. To state that someone should be sued for voicing the opinion of “evil bastards” is hilarious, stupid, and reflects a certain lack of sophistication on the letter-writer’s part. See Amendment 1, U. S. Hands off the Kochs

Re “Block that Koch” (Notes from the Neon Babylon, Feb. 13): Will Bruce Van Dyke ever learn to write in a civil manner? To refer to the Koch brothers as “evil bastards” is simply outrageous, and if they weren’t public figures, he should be sued. No matter what his disagreement is with them, he would be more successful in his criticism of them with facts. What have they done that is either immoral or illegal? Make a profit and employ thousands of people? By the way, where does Van Dyke come up with the $100 billion profit if the pipeline were built? He’s got the pipe part correct, that figure is a pipe dream of his. Van Dyke is certainly entitled to his opinion of whether the Keystone pipeline would be good or bad for the country, but in his own statement regarding the pipeline he offers no facts other than that he obviously hates the Koch brothers and doesn’t even offer any reason for that opinion. I have no ax to grind on behalf of their business, but I do believe that this nation would be better off buying oil from Canada than from Mexico, Venezuela or the Middle East.

Re “The Organic Food Lie” (Feature story, Feb. 13): Twelve times less? Really? In a most recent story you quoted a biochemist as saying some process was found to be “12 times less,” and I find that to be quite fanciful. I would hope that his education was better than that and what you printed was merely a misprint. Are you aware that there can never be anything less (not more) than one time. One time of anything is 100 percent! That is all of something.

You can increase anything by 100 percent, that is doubling it. When you consume 100 percent of anything, it is completely gone, there is nothing less.

People will walk by and assume this just by looking at the cover and never reading the story. The organic food market is growing everyday for good reason. I shouldn’t have to explain that to you. If you are unaware go visit an organic farm or talk to a grower and find out. Regardless of your article, organic food is here to stay and more people are waking up everyday and deciding they don’t want unnecessary chemicals in their body.

Walled garden Re “Don’t fence it in” (Letters to the Editor, Feb. 6): This is a response to the letter by Samuel Margolies about his meanspirited, erroneous complaints. The fence may make no sense to him, but it does to the people caring for and protecting the Arboretum who have given much time and thought as to how to solve the problems arising there that are a threat to its safety and beauty. To say the fence is aesthetically ugly is his perception, and he would probably find the black wrought iron fences all around New Orleans ugly, also. To say this is an expensive boondoggle is not the case, as that would be a wasteful or impractical activity, and this fence is founded by practicality to save something of great value. For him to say he doesn’t see “hordes of homeless” camping in front doesn’t mean they are “phantom homeless.” They are deeper inside the park under trees and bushes, where their debris is left. This fence will not visually or physically restrict the public. They will simply go in the entrance to enjoy the beauty. Tagging, theft and other vandalism are occurring, and the fence will help in curtailing it. Solitary walkers and joggers do not want to be encountering criminals or homeless on the more remote trails.

Homeless people may just be down on their luck, but some have mental instabilities and can frighten people, especially if they’re alone. Why does Margolies have to throw stones at the very people who are trying to protect a wonderful spot of beauty in our community? He should try to help, not hurt. He’s apparently angry because his view is changed, and he can’t do anything about it. What misplaced, hateful negativity.

Olympic sprawl In a Sunday editorial on Feb. 16, the Reno GazetteJournal called for another Winter Olympics in our area.

Like its news coverage of the prospect of another Olympics (“Stop the journalism boosterism,” RN&R, August 16, 2012), the editorial screens out any disquieting information that might lead readers to question the wisdom of dropping an Olympics into the Sierra.

Go to the editorial on the RG-J website and search in the editorial for the word tax. “No matches found,” it will tell you.

Search for environment. “No matches found.”

Search for traffic congestion. “No matches found.”

Search for quality of life. “No matches found.”

Ah, but you will find this sentence, which somehow found its way into the editorial: “There’s no place in the U.S. that deserves the chance to host the Games again.”

How that notion found its way into an editorial that is otherwise rich in chamber-of-commerce verbiage, we’ll never know.

The fact is, our area needs an official body that will honestly assess the notion of another Olympics. It should be created at the state level—if the games go bad, the whole region will end up paying the bill—and it should be filled with clear-eyed members who are not in business to lure another Olympics but to scrutinize the claims of both sides and decide whether it’s a good idea or a bad idea and then report to the public. It would also be good if our elected state officials, too, would start acting more like protectors of the state instead of hand puppets for the business community.

badly, as in the case of the Montreal games, which took that city three decades to pay off.

What the Gazette-Journal and the Reno Tahoe Winter Games Coalition seem to blithely ignore is that it’s not 1960. In that year, our area hosted the Winter Olympics.

But that was then. Today’s Olympics are not 1960-sized.

They’re massive. Critics of the idea, who cannot seem to get respectful coverage from the Gazette-Journal or a respectful hearing from government, believe another Winter Olympics would be akin to an atom bomb in the Sierra. What, for example, would the Olympic village alone do to the environment? In Sydney in 2000, an entire town—Newington—was constructed. Supporters of another local Olympics like to point out that this time, the games would not be confined to Squaw Valley. Events would be spread all over a multi-county region. Their point is that many businesses would benefit from the games. Our point is that such sprawl could do enormous damage to the environment.

In 1972, when Denver was selected for the 1976 Winter Olympics, the people of Colorado defied the business community and voted overwhelmingly to prohibit the use of any public funds for the purpose, killing the Denver games. The Squaw Valley Olympics were used as a bad example in that campaign, opponents saying the 1960 games cost 13 times what was originally estimated. In a 1980s effort to bring the games back to our area, the supporters were honest enough to say they would need a sales tax hike. These days, the Gazette-Journal, the Coalition and government aren’t mentioning taxes. Ask yourself why. And then demand better journalism from the Gazette-Journal and better representation from our governments. Ω |

Nevada can manage small budgets Finally, some good news about Nevada.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities recently published a report ranking the states in terms of their usage of the most effective fiscal tools to manage their money and make course corrections as needed. Nevada scored 7.0 on its use of 10 good by tools for budget planning and fiscal Sheila Leslie responsibility, ranking sixth in the nation, an unusually good score for the Silver State.

The report focused on three areas of quality fiscal planning. The first area is a “map of the future,” featuring multi-year forecasting, fiscal notes with multi-year projections, and baselines for current services.

The second area is called “credible projections,” focusing on independent revenue forecasting, a legislative fiscal office, and pension oversight. Finally, “staying on course” encourages welldesigned rainy day funds, oversight of tax expenditures, pension funding and debt-level reviews and regular status reports on the budget.

The excellent score is not really such a surprise given the conservative fiscal policies supported by leaders of both parties over the years ranging back to Assemblymember Jan Evans, Sen. Bill Raggio and Speaker Barbara Buckley. All supported the implementation of a rainy day fund, independent revenue forecasting and a strong legislative fiscal division.

But the top 10 ranking in financial management begs the question of why there are so many current efforts to find additional revenue for basic governmental services. If we manage our resources so well, why are we continually in crisis? And why are we so intent on stealing money from each other?

In Reno, we have the school board seriously considering the idea of a citizen’s initiative to reallocate— i.e., steal—existing revenues from Washoe County’s general fund and from the flood control budget to fix crumbling schools. This effort is a result of the predictable demise of AB 46, a cynical measure passed by the 2013 Legislature asking local

elected officials to impose taxes the Legislature preferred not to vote on.

Of course the idea of one governmental entity taking money from another without regard to the consequences or propriety of the action was pioneered by the Legislature when it raided local government funds to the tune of millions of dollars during the recession. The Nevada Supreme Court finally put a brake on the practice in 2011, forcing Gov. Sandoval to approve extending the “sunset” taxes instead.

Recently we’ve also heard the recycled idea of a state lottery in response to student outrage over yet another tuition increase at UNR. Higher education officials suggested the students demand a state lottery for education, forgetting to mention how many times the casino industry has killed lottery bills, seeing it as competition for limited gaming dollars.

Last week, business leaders had another idea for boosting the perpupil spending on K-12 education in Southern Nevada. “Fix” the funding formula so pupils in Northern Nevada

get less while their Southern Nevada counterparts get more.

The Education Initiative, (TEI), promoting a new broad-based business tax on corporations with revenue of more than a million dollars a year will be on the ballot in November, despite fierce opposition from businesses who are used to paying next to nothing in state taxes in Nevada although they pay corporate taxes ranging from 5 percent to 8.84 percent in every surrounding state. These big business leaders are never shy about requesting more subsidies or tax credits for themselves, but are quick to predict the state’s economy will self-destruct should the people demand they contribute more to the basic infrastructure any state needs to function well.

Yes, Nevada can be proud of its top 10 showing in fiscal management. But in terms of providing the support needed for education, an adequate social safety net, environmental protections, and other basic services, we unfortunately get what we pay for. Ω

Drug prohibition fuels society’s ills If you put a rat in a cage with a lever that dispenses a drug like heroin, the rat will keep pressing the lever to get the drug and forget to eat.

Everyone knows that, but did you know that if you also put some other rats in with him and a wheel and other things to do, the rat will by Brendan eat and play instead?

Trainor The original rat experiment is offered as proof that drug addiction is a disease. The disease theory of addiction holds that addiction is a brain disease that is incurable and can only be survived by total abstinence. The preferred treatment for the so-called brain disease is not medical, but a spiritual 12-step program that requires the addict place himself in the hands of a higher power because he is helpless in his addiction!

The war on drugs has created an iron triangle between the drug laws, the judicial system and drug treatment centers. Drug courts are

supposedly humane as they steer drug abusers into treatment rather than prison. The sword of prison sentencing still hangs over any relapse. This is coerced treatment, which may be appropriate only if the individual has committed real crimes to supply his habit.

Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman recently died of a heroin overdose.

Shortly before he died, he told a stranger that he was a heroin addict. Why did this accomplished man believe that he was a helpless addict? Could it be that he was told that by the politicized treatment industry? In fact, abstinence-based drug treatment kills. Hoffman joined Amy Winehouse, the Celebrity Rehab Four and others on a long list of celebrities who died of an overdose after falling off the abstinence wagon during treatment. Artists often have drug problems. Some do die young.

But Keith Richards, William S. Burroughs and many more live long lives. The governmentapproved treatments tell addicts

they are helpless and will always be uncontrollably addicted. But the government’s own studies show that most addicts quit or moderate their habits on their own. In Northern Nevada, the drug court refers drug users to treatment centers like Bristlecone Family Resources, which follow the National Institutes of Health disease/abstinence model The media breathlessly tells us there is a new heroin epidemic. Is there? Although raw numbers are up slightly, the rate of heroin use is holding steady at about two-tenths of a percent of population. Where are all the previous media-driven drug epidemics? Crack cocaine, the scourge of the 1980s that would engulf middle class America and lead to a “lost generation” of doomed crack babies is now just the stuff of comical Canadian mayors. Similar scares regarding methamphetamine, caffeine energy

drinks, cannibal bath salts and flesh-eating krokodil are pushed by the media to frighten us and keep the money for the drug war flowing.

If government says you are diseased, then the state can appear compassionate by offering treatment rather than jail. It would be more humane for the state to stay out of the lives of peaceful addicts altogether. Nevada needs a Good Samaritan Law to indemnify drug users at the scene from prosecution if they call 9-11 to save a friend from overdose death. We also need to make Naloxone, which stops drug overdoses, more available.

Harm reduction, which leads to reduced death and disease from addictions by decriminalizing the environment around drug use and then the drugs themselves, is the opposite of the disease theory of addiction. It is far more humane to recognize that any habit can be managed with moderation, not state-imposed abstinence. Ω

Patient dumped again U.S. District Judge James C. Mahan has dismissed a lawsuit brought by one of the patients bused out of state by a Nevada state psychiatric hospital and abandoned in Sacramento, a city where he was unknown.

James F. C. Brown was the focus of an investigative report last year by the Sacramento Bee that revealed Nevada’s dumping program that resulted in 1,500 patients being sent out of state with one-way tickets over a period of five years. After the Bee exposé, Brown was reunited with his daughter.

The class action lawsuit was filed for Brown “and for all persons similarly situated” on June 11 last year by Allen Lichtenstein and Staci Pratt of the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada.

The suit targeted both Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital and Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services. It charged that Brown and other patients “were medicated before their discharge and required to leave the facility under the influence of powerful anti-psychotic/tranquilizing medication. While Plaintiffs were in a drugged state, and incompetent to give informed consent, the standard procedure was for institution staff to physically escort Plaintiffs from the facility and place them in taxis bound for the Greyhound Bus Station in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were directed and required to travel on pre-paid tickets which had been previously ordered and paid for by Defendants.”

But Mahan found the dumping was a proper response by a state agency to scarce resources, and that Brown was not coercively dumped.

“The coercive power of the state was not imposed on him,” he wrote. “There was no direct command from an individual bearing state coercive authority, nor threat of punishment if he did not travel to Sacramento.”

Governments take on water transfer The Goshute and Shoshone tribes, White Pine County, Great Basin Water Network and other organizations have sued the U.S. Interior Department to reverse its approval of the Southern Nevada effort to take water from eastern Nevada and western Utah, and to overturn DOI permitting for a 265-mile pipeline to carry the water away.

“We cannot look the other way when the future of our people and homelands are in the hands of those who have their priorities mixed up,” said Confederated Tribes of the Goshute chair Madeline Greymountain in a prepared statement. She said the Southern Nevada Water Authority, as part of the water project, intends to totally destroy the Swamp Cedars massacre site, where attacks on tribes occurred in 1863 and 1897, a site that is hallowed by the Goshute.

The lawsuit comes on the heels of a decision by state court Judge Robert Estes overturning approval of the water project by State Engineer Jason King. Estes called King’s decision “subjective, unscientific, arbitrary and capricious” (“Water grab fails court test,” RN&R, Dec. 26).

Slow going Local governments still having trouble coping with medicine Local governments have lost one of their excuses for not moving ahead with marijuana dispensaries—the state regulations many of them by Dennis Myers have been waiting for have been delivered to the Nevada Legislature for approval.

But that step forward is being accompanied by steps back all over the state. It appears that patients in rural counties will be left with no assistance from their local governments. Most are simply ignoring the new state law allowing—but not requiring—local governments to set up dispensaries for marijuana.

Sen. Tick Segerblom Clark County Democrat In numerous communities, governing bodies have voted for “moratoriums”—doing nothing for the time being. In others, like North Las Vegas, local governments have simply ignored the matter.

In Colorado, there are news reports about arrivals of families who have left their home states— Nevada among them—to get to the availability of marijuana for family members. Dravet Syndrome, an unusual and degenerative form of epilepsy that occasionally kills, is particularly drawing arrivals. In one

case, a 5-year-old named Charlotte Figi went from 300 seizures a week to none. KTNV in Las Vegas sent a news crew to Denver to report on the emigration: “Hundreds of families are moving to Colorado from different states, including Nevada, to get medical marijuana. The irony? They should be able to get it in Nevada, because it’s legal, but with no place to buy it, Nevadans are left in limbo.”

The Nevada dispensary law was enacted by the legislature last year after the lawmakers had left patients hanging for more than a decade. State voters approved use of marijuana as medicine in 2000, but not until 2013 did legislators allow patients any way of obtaining the plant except grow-your-own.

Clark County Sen. Tick Segerblom, who sponsored the new law, said last week, “I think local governments are coming around slowly but surely. Not much movement by smaller counties, although Nye County has taken some action.”

The Nevada Legislature put the dispensary program in the hands of the state Public and Behavioral Health Division, formerly the State Health Division. On Feb. 6, the Interim Finance Committee—a panel that appropriates state money when the full legislature is out of session—approved $364,000 to staff the program. One supervisor and six inspectors will be hired

by the state of Nevada by March to handle scrutiny of medical marijuana dispensaries in Nevada.

(As it happens, that is exactly the size of force installed by the federal government in Nevada in 1919 to enforce alcohol prohibition.)

If towns and cities do not avail themselves of their dispensaries— the state law provides for up to 66 dispensaries—counties can assume the unused number. Faced with Clark County taking over the Las Vegas allotment of dispensaries, members of the Las Vegas City Council softened their approach to the issue. On a 5-2 vote, the council directed city staff to draw up a plan for dispensaries in the city.

With the Washoe County Commission hovering nearby, city councils in Reno and Sparks are moving ahead, though not with any great enthusiasm. Sparks, like some other towns, is considering using zoning to restrict the location of dispensaries. Reno is stumbling over the lack of a lawyer for counsel.

A State Bar of Nevada committee will meet next week on whether to amend ethics rules to allow public counsel like district attorneys and city attorneys to advise their local governing bodies on how to draft language on the dispensaries.

Though most public counsel so far have had no difficulty doing so, Reno City Attorney John Kadlic said a state bar rule prevents him from instructing clients how to break the law. Marijuana use for any purpose remains illegal under federal law.

Supporters of medical marijuana enjoyed a publicity bonus when Reno Mayor Bob Cashell, a former Republican state chair, switched sides on the issue after a member of his family benefited from the use of therapeutic marijuana.

Bedroom communities Two areas on the cusp of urban and rural counties have taken some lethargic steps. In Nye County in November, the County Commission instructed its staffers to draft local rules for a dispensary. According to Pahrump Valley Times reporter Mark Waite, the staff included a clause outlawing medical marijuana dispensaries.

“The Pahrump Regional Planning Commission recommended striking that clause, permitting the one dispensary Nye County will be permitted to have under the

state law,” Waite said in an email message. “The county bill would allow cultivation facilities, but there is a buffer zone prohibiting them within 1,500 feet of schools, churches, day care and 300 feet away from public facilities and residences. A medical marijuana advocate noted the county code doesn’t allow agriculture in an industrial or commercial zone, where these establishments would be located.”

That issue is still to be settled.

Nye County has a reputation for inviting any economic activity it can get, such as the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump. But a plan underway for a “Cannabis Expo” in Pahrump to explain the medicinal value of the plant to local residents has generated controversy.

Many people who work in Las Vegas or other Clark County communities live in Pahrump.

In Carson City, meanwhile, the Board of Supervisors in January voted not to decide anything for 180 days, though it can take up the issue at any time. District Attorney Neil Rombardo told the supervisors the state regulations were not due until April 1. In Carson City, competition from a county government is not a concern—Carson is a city/county mix jurisdiction. But small counties more distant from the two urban areas are studiously

avoiding dealing with the issue. In at least two counties—Lyon and Nye—sheriffs have expressed their opposition.

Assembly Majority Leader William Horne, who as a lawyer is representing a prospective dispensary operator, said patients in the small counties have an alternative, but not an easy one.

The buzz on bees Beekeeping conference in Yerington We have a strange relationship with bees. Without them, we would be in a whole lot of trouble, which is why colony collapse disorder (CCD) is so distressing, but many of us are terrified of them as soon as we hear that buzz by Sage Leehey anywhere near us. The Mason Valley Beekeepers certainly aren’t afraid of bees, though, and have chosen to keep them as a hobby. And on Feb. s age l@ 28 and March 1, they will be holding their fourth annual conference for news review.c om those who want to learn more about these insects.

The conference will be at the Pioneer Crossing Convention Center in Yerington. The gathering has grown quite a bit since its first year with 16 attendees, and now has more than 80 people signed up from Northern Nevada and California, Pahrump, McGill and other places with more time left to register. The cost is $25 per person and includes lunch on Saturday. There will also be a raffle and a silent auction to raise money for the Young Beekeepers Scholarship program.

“Anyone can come,” said organizer Debbie Gilmore. “If they have bees, if they don’t have bees, if they want to have bees or if they’re just interested in learning. Anybody, any age. The good thing about beekeeping is families can do it, old people can do it—like me— anybody can do it.”

Speakers at the conference will include beekeepers from California, Oregon and Nevada with discussions about bee biology, pests and diseases, how to get started, commercial beekeeping, hive products, queen rearing, making nucleus colonies or nucs, swarms and small cell foundation. Separate sessions will be held for beginning beekeepers and more advanced beekeepers throughout Saturday.

For more information about Mason Valley The goal of the conference is to educate anyone who is interested in Beekeepers and the bees which may help beekeepers and others in the fight against CCD upcoming conference, and keep bees around for the future. CCD is a widespread problem, but visit masonvalleybeeGilmore said that the Mason Valley Beekeepers don’t see much of it, keepers.org. which may help shed some light on its causes.

Gilmore said she’s excited for the conference and interested to hear from the variety of people that will be speaking. She is a more advanced beekeeper because she grew up doing it with her family, and began again about eight years ago. But she said that it’s important that new beekeepers know what they’re doing and that all beekeepers keep up on the research.

“Hobby beekeepers are not always looked favorably upon because they get into it and then they lose interest and then what do you do with these bees?” Gilmore said. “They become a nuisance and stuff. So we try to educate people, not only those who want to do bees, but those who just are interested in learning more about bees.”

But she said beekeeping isn’t for everyone. Gilmore is stung often, but half-jokingly says that it’s a good thing because bee venom is used in beauty products and in some therapies.

“If you look into a colony of bees, and you’re a little squeamish about it or you don’t like to get stung, beekeeping is not for you,” Gilmore said. “’Cause you will get stung. But bee venom is very beneficial.” Ω

olin Loretz is a software developer.

He’s also an enthusiastic marketer for the community of Reno startup businesses, a fan of collaboration and innovation, and a proponent of high-tech economic redevelopment.

He wants Reno to emulate some of the more tech-friendly cities in the country. That facet of Colin Loretz is most easily seen in a business he co-owns and cofounded, the Reno Collective.

“We wanted it to feel more like San Francisco or New York City,” he says of the Collective. “We’re active in the startup scene in other cities, and this is the vibe most of the places have.”

The Reno Collective is downtown, on the ground floor of Arlington Towers, at the northeast corner of First Street and Arlington Avenue, less than a block from Wingfield Park and the Truckee River. It’s an area with a lot of foot traffic, and passersby might peer into the glass façade and see what looks like an odd mélange of a student union, a bustling office and a coffee shop with great wifi: people sitting alone at desks or in clusters at tables, working, mostly on computers. The name, which might seem suspiciously communist to some Cold War veterans, adorns an Art Deco atom on the sign.

Specifically, the Reno Collective is a co-working space, an office and studio for freelancers, telecommuters and startups. It’s open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, but all the full-time members have keys, so there are also people working there evenings and weekends.

The Arlington location is the third iteration. The previous location, tucked away on Lander Street behind My Favorite Muffin, seemed like a

relaxed, old-fashioned, small town spot. This current location, in a central hub of the city, is more energetic, high-tech and distinctly urban. Since moving there in June last year, the Collective’s membership has grown from 35 people to 90.

Loretz says that even with 90 members, there’s still some room for the Collective to grow within the 5,600 square foot location that includes conference rooms and call rooms. But he says he wouldn’t want it to get too much bigger.

“Even if every desk isn’t full, it gets to the point where you can’t know everybody,” he says. “If we really cared about just getting as much money as possible, we’d just take everyone’s money. But the problem is we need to make sure everyone really likes working here. The community and the culture are important.”

Loretz was born in Reno, grew up in Las Vegas, and studied marketing at the University of Nevada, Reno from 2005 to 2009, though he’s been three credits short of graduation since then. He’s finally gotten around to taking his missing fine arts class this semester, and he’s set to graduate in May. He’s tall, with red hair and beard, a steady gaze and a steady voice, a calm presence. He wears a cheap, old-school ’80s-style calculator watch.

He almost always says “we,” rather than “I,” like he loves being part of a team. He’s only 26, but seems older—though he says he doesn’t hear that as much nowadays as he did five years ago, when he was first starting the Collective and was only 21.

At UNR, he worked as the web editor of the Sagebrush, the university’s student newspaper. He spent the rest of his time on creative projects and internships, and avoided the

classroom as much as possible.

“Even when I was in class, I was always on my computer,” he says.

“That’s kind of acceptable now, but back when I was going five years ago, most teachers just thought I wasn’t paying attention. I’ve always been doing multiple things, and I’m still doing that now.”

In 2009, he was working for the marketing company Twelve Horses.

He worked as a software programmer and developer, working with programs like Wordpress and Salesforce. He went to a few conferences in San Francisco and got exposed to the concept of co-working places, a common practice in tech-oriented cities like Austin, San Francisco and New York. Shortly before Twelve Horses was bought by another company, Loretz was laid off, but he was able to take a few clients with him. He went freelance.

This was the gestational era of the Reno Collective. Loretz, cofounder Ed Adkins and about 10 other freelancers and telecommuters would meet regularly at local bars and coffee shops.

“Every Friday we met at Seven Tea House right here in Arlington Towers,” says Loretz. “So it’s kind of interesting to be back in the same building. They were really open to it. We’d show up in the morning and have tea and coffee, and it would turn to beer in the afternoon.”

“Colin and I were working on a bunch of stuff together,” says Adkins.

“One day, we were at a coffee place, and he showed me, ‘Hey, check out this co-working thing.’ It was so much like what we were already doing with our friends.”

The Collective moved into the Cathexes building, at the corner of Second and Bell Streets. At the end of the first year, there were 12 members. The Collective then moved to Lander Street. During this stint, Adkins left the Collective to focus on his company Let’s do Things, which organizes local bar crawls, fun runs and other events.

After two years on Lander, the Collective had 35 members. Then, last June, the collective moved into the downtown location.

“The idea of co-working has grown a lot,” says Loretz. “If I had to start it over again in Reno, I don’t know if I would. It’s really, really hard to start something in Reno. Something more tech-focused like this, even though we’re so close to the Bay, is really hard to get a hold in Reno, because most of the people who work in Reno don’t work in what we do. So our job has been to find every single person who does anything related to tech, design or entrepreneurship, and fortunately we’ve been able to find at least 90.”

Not all the people who work at the Collective are freelance programmers and designers or entrepreneurs launching new businesses. There’s also an engineering firm, law students who use the place to study, telecommuters with young children who struggle to get work done at home, and more.

There are also some small companies that work out of the Collective.

“In some cases, three or four person companies join as is, and in other cases, they were all freelancers and started the company together after meeting here,” says Loretz. “That doesn’t happen often—it’s not something you can force. But it does happen.”

There’s also a lot of commingling and collaboration among the members who work in different fields.

“When we have a video person, a web person and a journalism freelancer, they can all work together,” says Loretz.

One startup that worked at the Collective was Pinoccio, a hardware and microcontroller development company. Pinoccio’s product connects things in the physical world to the web. For example, it allows users to remotely monitor the temperature or alcohol content of a homebrew, or get mobile alerts from a home security system.

“The disadvantage of working out of your house is that you end up becoming a hermit,” says Eric Jennings, Pinoccio’s co-founder and chief technical officer. “You have a hard time actually socializing after awhile. You get cabin fever. All these weird psychological things start to happen. So the Collective is really beneficial because you get

the best of both worlds. You can get head’s-down quiet work done, kind of like a library, bout you also have this larger office atmosphere, without all the politics you’d get at a normal company, because everyone’s working for themselves.”

Pinoccio recently expanded out of the Collective into its own office, also in Arlington Towers.

“What I learned working other places than Reno is that it’s not the size of your community, it’s how close together it is—the density—that matters,” says Jennings. “So it was really important for us to be part of the Collective when it moved down here, because there were a couple of startups already here, we’d kind of get this tight-knit group that was really open to bringing new people in and having a lot of density there, so you get a lot of cross-pollination. And when we outgrew the collective, we wanted to stay as close as possible.”

“Pinoccio just moved out, but that’s because of growth, which is a good reason for people leaving,” says Loretz.

Turnover is relatively high at the Collective. People leave every month.

Sometimes freelancers decide to move or take a job somewhere. That said, Loretz said there is one upside to the economic downturn of the last few years: “It created a lot more freelancers.” He believes more and more workers will be freelance in the future. Loretz says anyone who can

pay the membership fees can join the collective and build connections.

“We don’t have an approval process, but it’s not a call center,” he says. “We’re not going to have people here on the phone all day. Some people show up, and they see it as a cheap way to sell to 90 people. But those people we weed out.”

There is a job board on the website, and Loretz says some companies come to the Collective, looking to hire freelancers for various projects, especially app design.

“A lot of people, once they work here, they really don’t want to go back,” he says. “It’s the freedom to be able to work and chose your own time. … If you’re expected to be creative Monday through Friday, it just doesn’t always work out that way. Some people are willing to risk the ups and downs of things might be tight next month, to have that freedom.”

It’s a snap Loretz describes Reno Collective as “something that we want to exist because my business needs an office, and we might as well work out of here.”

His business, Cloudsnap, has evolved over the years. He and cofounder Chris Yoder met through the Collective. In 2011, they pitched the original idea for the company, essentially software that links up

different business applications, to tech startup accelerator Techstars.

“About a thousand companies apply, they chose 10,” says Loretz.

When Techstars accepted the Cloudsnap application, Loretz and Yoder suddenly had to move to San Antonio for three months, beginning in January 2012.

“It was a whole three months of being broken down and rebuilt,” says Loretz. Techstars invests time, money and mentorship in the fledgling companies. At the end of that three-month period, Loretz and Yoder had to pitch their new, more developed company to a room of hundreds of prospective investors.

They were able to secure some

investment, but not as much as they had hoped.

“We had a lot of trouble raising money because we were moving back to Reno,” says Loretz. “If we were moving to Austin or San Francisco, fundraising would have been a lot easier. … Many people were worried that, if you’re not in the Bay, you’re going to die in a vacuum. In the Bay, you’re constantly running into people, and serendipity is high, and you’re going to accidentally go to coffee with someone who’s going to be your first big customer. And that stuff really does happen. At the same time, we wanted to be head’s-down and build what we were building.”

With the startup funds they did secure, they were able to hire a couple of more people. The program was designed to help companies “snap” together their various software programs, linking their registration, support and helpdesk, and billing programs, for example.

They had about 100 companies try it, and the feedback was that the companies wanted something different. Loretz himself now acknowledges that it was cumbersome. He compares it to a “Rube Goldberg machine.”

So, Loretz and company designed a second version of Cloudsnap, marketing it as a tool for developers.

“Selling to developers is really hard—that didn’t work out really well,” says Loretz. He says he still believes that version has potential, probably as an open-source technology. Then, we ran out of money, and lost those two people so they had to look for jobs elsewhere,” he says. Yoder also ended up taking another job.

So now, working by himself, Loretz has developed the third version of Cloudsnap, one that not only links different programs, but also manages the data and aggregates the information. The goal, he says, is to help companies keep customers.

“We’re trying to help companies move out and stay in this area,” says Loretz. “You want density. … When you go to Boulder in Colorado, and you go to Pearl Street, you see startups everywhere. They’re part of the fabric of downtown. People are living downtown. People are working downtown. … In part, it’s my vision for it, because if it doesn’t happen, we can’t continue to stay here. There’s only so much that we can grow. Everything else needs to grow around us. Or it’s really hard to keep going.”

Loretz believes that cultivating an atmosphere of innovation and encouraging startups is a better plan for Northern Nevadan economic development than the current models, of attracting larger companies to the area by promising cheap square footage and tax incentives. That’s a model that might create a lot of jobs, but they won’t be very high quality jobs.

“The issue is the skill set they’re looking for,” he says. “The bigger companies are looking to outsource their back office systems here, their call centers, their warehouses and distribution. Even if we get high-end robotic manufacturing, it’s still not the programmers creating the manufacturing equipment. It’s the people that are fixing them. If that’s

“We’re taking a very different approach than I have in the past,” says Loretz. “We’re building less, releasing it, adding to it, rather than building the Titanic, launching it, and then hitting an iceberg. … Cloudsnap has been a rocky up and down, up and down.”

Developing minD Some media outlets, like the Reno Gazette-Journal, have begun characterizing First Street as “Startup Row.” There is a cluster of small, tech-based companies in the area, like No-IP, a domain name service management, Spin Games, which develops casino games, and Crazy Tooth Studio, which develops casino games and other games. There’s also Pinoccio and TrainerRoad, which develops apps for bicyclists and is currently working out of the Collective, but soon to move into its own office.

what our workforce is comprised of, that’s fine. But that’s not where it could go. We could stay that way forever, or we could transform and be a knowledge workforce.”

Adkins cautions that nobody should be overly optimistic about a future influx of local tech companies.

“When I hear somebody say something like Reno’s going to be the next Silicon Valley, I can’t stop laughing,” he says. “You don’t hear the people who are really doing stuff say that. You hear them say, ‘Hey, we want to create this startup row,’ or ‘We want to be able to attract some startups here.’ There’s enough people who want to do startups anywhere. By creating a space that’s supportive here in Reno we can have something really meaningful, but shooting for Silicon Valley means you don’t really know what you’re talking about.”

A number of previously successful co-working spaces have folded in the last couple of years. Turnover tends to be high at the spaces, which rely on a constant influx of new workers, because successful businesses always move on to bigger or better digs and unsuccessful efforts just leave.

“We want startups to happen, and startups should grow out,” says Loretz. “But then we want to make

sure we have a pipeline. Where are the next startups?”

The Reno Collective has developed an informal partnership with UNR’s journalism school, which Loretz describes as “the most entrepreneurial school on campus.” From his perspective, it’s partly motivated by damming the flow of Reno’s notorious brain drain, where the smartest students leave town after graduation.

Despite his frustrations, Loretz says, “I’m really hopeful for Reno.”

He says he sees a renaissance in the city, which values collaboration—collective work spaces, community gardens, collaborative art space. He mentions local businesses and organizations like the Holland Project, Bridgewire, the Generator, Cuddleworks—anywhere people work together.

But if First Street is indeed becoming a Startup Row, then the Reno Collective is a potential anchor.

“We wonder what would happen if the Collective were to go under,” says Loretz. “If it were to go away—obviously lots of other things are happening, but it would be really visible that something like this didn’t work in Reno.” Ω

This spring, the local theater companies are all grown up

I

’ve been writing these twice-yearly theater previews for a few years, and each year I see local theater companies blazing more trails, landing bigger fish, establishing deeper roots … and lots of other clichés that mean good things for area stages.

A spring theater preview may call to mind all sorts of seasonal metaphors—fledgling, blossoming, budding. A few years ago, they may have fit. But with developments such as multimilliondollar upgrades, heavyweight artists in residence, original plays and innovative art forms, those terms no longer fit. The local theater scene is officially all grown up.

Drinking age: Brüka TheaTre Raise a glass to a pillar of Reno theater: Brüka’s celebrating its 21st birthday by binging on innovation and challenge—just before construction starts on the new Virginia Street Bridge and potentially affects next season.

In March, spring comes in like The Lyons, a caustic, semi-autobiographical comedy by Nicky Silver (author of Fat Men in Skirts and 16 | RN&R |

The Food Chain) about a terminally ill father whose wife has waited far too long to let his kids know about it.

Nothing about April’s Les Liaisons Dangereuses is lamb-like—not with its stories of lust, betrayal and sexual manipulation.

Director Holly Natwora sets this version in 1920s Paris, and incorporates costumes by Lady Hull that draw upon French designer Erté’s long, elegant styles, which are so iconic of the period.

An icon of a different kind takes the stage in late May. Controversial President Andrew Jackson gets a 21st-century emo rock star makeover in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, which Brüka calls “a Wild West rock musical.”

Playwright-in-residence and director Sandra Neace returned from New York’s International Fringe Festival with Best-in-Show-winner 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche in tow. This comedy, opening in July, is set in a 1950s Cold War-era bomb shelter, where the ladies of the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein have unwittingly ended up together.

Brüka’s Theater for Children tackles another Brothers Grimm tale with Goldi, a contemporary retelling of the Goldilocks story in which the young home intruder is torn between two families—her own, and the one in her fantasies. For tickets and information, visit bruka.org.

LocaLs onLy: gooDLuck MacBeTh Goodluck Macbeth’s 2014 season is comprised almost entirely of original work created by Renoarea artists. Kicking things off, and running through Feb. 22, is a coproduction with improv troupe The Utility Players titled The Game Show Show. Two teams—the Utility Players and other teams of locals—will face off in two hilarious and unpredictable game show showdowns.

Also in March, GLM’s Spotlight Academy for Young Actors presents John Lennon & Me, the story of a terminally ill girl with a rich fantasy life.

The Memory Card is a show conceived by the Reno Video Game Orchestra and developed with Goodluck Macbeth. Opening March 21, this sci-fi story plunges an adolescent girl into the world of video games. The show combines original music, video projection and an audience-guided storyline with three possible endings, à la the Choose Your Own Adventure book series.

Playwright-in-residence Stacey Spain directs her own original piece, opening May 2. The Killarney Sabbatical is a comedic drama about a teacher on sabbatical in Ireland who must deal with the daughter she left behind there years ago. Goodluck Macbeth, now a formal acting

company as of this season, hopes to tour this production around the region.

Starting in late June comes one of GLM’s only non-original production of the season: Sondheim’s Company, a musical comedy about a 30-something bachelor whose married pals keep offering advice for his commitment phobia. Local dance instructor Jessica Mann choreographs this piece, which will feature Cami Thompson.

A GLM summer staple gets a new look.

Now in its third year, Hot August Sock Hop still immerses audiences in the music of the ’50s and ’60s. It revisits a previous character, Gertie, who is now older and the proprietress of a creaturefeatures-only drive-in theater.

Then in late August comes Miss Ginger Devine: Undressed. The local drag queen’s alter-ego, Chris Daniels (a Utility Player), created this semi-autobiographical one-woman show that examines the life and ridiculousness of life as Reno’s number-one drag queen.

a LiTTLe kicky: universiTy of nevaDa, reno New year, new digs, new name. As the $4 million renovation to its theater space prepares

to wrap up this spring, the University of Nevada, Reno’s Department of Theatre & Dance sheds its Nevada Repertory Company moniker, and asserts the important role of dance in its performance schedule, starting with Farflung, opening Feb. 28.

As Department Chair Rob Gander explains, Farflung is a production using the postmodern style of devised theater.

“It’s a contemporary method where you start with a premise and build collaboratively,” he says. “You might start with a theme, and you begin to explore the idea, rehearsing without a script.”.

Devised by students and director Susan Pfeffer, and with original music composed

by Graham Flett, Farflung will feature media projections; wacky lighting cues; odd audience configurations; an abstract, non-linear story; and an exploration of the intersection between theater and dance.

In April is The Museum Plays, a compilation of student-directed, 10-minute one-acts. The show explores our relationships with art—what it can do, and what it fails to do.

Charmed: reno LittLe theater Love and folly are in the air at RLT this spring.

The season starts with the next installment in RLT’s Off-Off Broadway Series, dedicated to spotlighting fringe theater and local playwrights.

Jack Neary’s play Jerry Finnegan’s Sister is the charming story of a man finally dealing with his unrequited love for his best friend’s sister.

One of America’s great farces, Ken Ludwig’s Lend Me a Tenor opens in March, complete with slamming doors, mistaken identities and silly outfits. Artistic Director Doug Mishler calls it “insane opera meets Noises Off.” An opera star is believed dead, and the show must go on— someone must dress as him to fool the audience, and, as you’d expect, mayhem ensues.

Comedy turns to drama in May with The Heiress, a story of a trying father-daughter relationship, the changing role of women in the turn of the 20th century and a love story gone horribly wrong.

Off-Off Wells returns in June with the coming of age story Slab Boys, about young Scottish men working at a carpet factory who dream of better lives.

RLT’s Artown offerings feature something for adults and children. In the first weekend of July comes Sleeping Beauty. The following week, audiences will get an opportunity to interact with performers in Shakespeare Abridged, the hilarious parody that takes on every single one of the Bard’s plays in one fell swoop.

Initially, the Syrian government censors approved the work—presumably not acknowledging the content out of fear of indicting themselves as sexually minded— or perhaps they’re just so unfamiliar with female genitalia that they didn’t recognize it when it was staring them in the face.

Eventually, some women complained about the art and reported it to the Ministry of Culture, which quickly seized the work.

Harrsch was born in Mexico City, has lived and worked in Germany, Italy and

Brazil, and has been based in New York for 12 years. She’s currently the first ever semester-long visiting artist in residence at the University of Nevada, Reno’s art department. She’s co-teaching with Joe DeLappe a class on art in public spaces, and providing critiques for the student artists. She’ll have a solo exhibition at the university’s Artspace Gallery in the West Street Market opening April 3.

Additionally, Harrsch will present her multimedia performance event “Bodymaps” at the Nightingale Concert Hall on April 8, with collaborators composer Paola Prestini and former Kronos Quartet cellist Jeffrey Zeigler. Harrsch created a visual timeline of images—primarily her paintings, drawings and photographs—and gave it to the composer, who composed music to accompany the timeline. Then, Harrsch created videos and animations of the images in the timeline set to the music. A primary theme of “Bodymaps” is the human body, and the life experiences that can be read on a body, what Harrsch describes as a “graphic map that shows the life.”

“It was a beautiful collaboration process,” says Harrsch. “Whatever was created, either in terms of visuals or music, we kept on transforming it.”

The piece premiered at New York’s Whitney Museum in 2007, and has been presented at many different venues and festivals. The response to the piece has been so positive that many composers have approached Harrsch about collaborating, including Philip Glass, one of the most prestigious composers in contemporary music.

In the Artspace Gallery, Harrsch will be presenting videos from another large multimedia work, “Room 35.” For that piece, she again worked with composer Prestini and a different cellist, Maya Beiser. “Room 35” is partly inspired by Nam June Paik’s famous 1970s sculpture “TV Cello,” a cello made

of stacked televisions.

“The instrument was not pristine and successful in terms of sound, it was more like a sculpture that was played,” says Harrsch of Paik’s piece.

“In this case, since I was collaborating with some of the top musicians in the country, I wasn’t going to compromise their performance.”

She worked with an LED sign designer who builds signs for Times Square advertisements to build a cello with LED displays that could be integrated into her videos and animations. The “Room 35” video depicts human bodies in intimate embraces, with different images juxtaposed on them and in the negative space between them.

Harrsch views her large-scale multidisciplinary work, which incorporates video, music, photography, drawing and painting—as rooted in collage.

“We live in a world that gets informed by so many different things, and we get informed by so many different things,” she says. “We are so many different things at the same time. We’re not unilateral or linear. We’re multidimensional.” Ω

The menu is organized into Garden (vegan), Sea (fish), Land (mammals), and Flowers (dessert).

From the Garden, we went with curried, pistachio-crusted “scallops” (actually scallop-shaped chunks of trumpet mushroom stalk), with sprouted lentils and a cardamom chia sauce ($10). The texture was very similar to a cooked sea scallop, but the flavor combination was earthy, tangy and delicious. The sprouted lentil concoction was so good, my wife wanted just a bowl of that—that is, until she tried the avocado-jicama-yuzu tartare, served towering atop rapini leaves, held together with spicy chayote crisps, caramelized onions (dehydrated), and a cilantro-apple chutney on the side ($10). This dish was impressive both for its flavors as well as sheer engineering prowess in the construction. I’m still not sure what was holding the whole thing together, but it didn’t take us long to demolish it. Of everything we tried, my wife loved this dish the best.

There are many items from the Sea on this menu, but I knew I had to try a pair of Connecticut Blue Point oysters, topped with shiso (an Asian herb of the mint family), yuzu (a small citrus fruit with a flavor somewhat like lemon-lime), and pink peppercorn mignonette sauce ($3 per oyster). Although I enjoyed the oysters, I guess I’m a bit of a purist.

I love fresh, raw oysters, and I think the complex mix of flavors detracted more than added to this bivalve. It wasn’t bad at all, but the oyster’s melody was a bit lost among the other notes.

Having said that, the Nantucket scallop ceviche (combined with cilantro sorbet and jicama) was mindblowingly good ($13). The acid of the marinade gave the scallops a texture somewhere between raw and lightly cooked, with all the flavors combining extremely well. When I return, that dish will be first on the list.

By the time we got to Land, I knew I had to try the antelope carpaccio with indigo tomato chips, pickled mushroom, and calabrese pepper, served with dehydrated fennel crisps ($13). My wife, who enjoys a short list of raw sushi items, was not exactly excited about trying this. Yet, she was pleasantly surprised by how much she liked it. As for me, I was stunned by the buttery texture of the meat and the perfect composition of flavors. I didn’t mind a bit that my wife ate only one slice.

To finish we tried both of the available desserts. First, a plate featuring small wedges of Barinaga Ranch txiki (a semi-hard cheese made from raw sheep’s milk), served with small clusters of red grapes and dehydrated onion and fennel crisps ($9). Next, two dainty balls of vanilla bean ice cream were served on a bed of thinly-sliced apple, topped with walnut pralines and a sprig of fresh mint ($7). Very refreshing.

The portions aren’t very big, and I may have paid more for less food than I would normally be comfortable with. Yet, I feel like I came out way ahead in this equation. The experience and food were worth every penny, and the atmosphere was sophisticated yet casual. Want to impress a date? Take her to Rawr and she’ll never forget you, although she might fall in love with the chef. It’s a risk worth taking. Ω

Rebuilt and remade RoboCop There’s a slew of ’80s remakes getting thrown at us lately. Endless Love and About Last Night both got re-dos just in time for Valentine’s Day. On that very same day, a day of candy and heart-shaped cards, MGM released an updated version of a very different sort of film, that being Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 ultra-violent satiric masterpiece, RoboCop. by The idea to reboot RoboCop has been Bob Grimm kicking around for years. The last RoboCop, the remarkably awful RoboCop 3, came out b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m more than 20 years ago. At one point, director Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream) was attached to helm, and that gave geeks and fanboys cause for rejoicing. Alas, Aronofsky dropped out to make Black Swan instead. Oh, well—a chance for legendary coolness got squandered.

In stepped Brazilian director Jose Padilha (Elite Squad), who eventually received a mandate to produce a PG-13 RoboCop (as opposed to the hard-R original) so that more money could be made upon its release. After a tumultuous production, we have the result.

And that result? Not that bad … not bad at all.

Padilha and writer Joshua Zetumer wisely go for something very different this time out. The new RoboCop is still subversive, and perhaps satirical when it comes to its presentation of the media. Conversely, this one has a little more heart and emotion than the nasty original.

Now, normally, I’d cry foul at this sort of thing, because I do love my RoboCop bloody, but a strong cast and a visually sound presentation lead to a movie that is, at the least, worth watching even if it pales in comparison to Verhoeven’s insane incarnation.

Joel Kinnaman steps into the role of Alex Murphy, a Detroit cop in the year 2028 who gets himself blown up after causing too much trouble for a criminal kingpin. Murphy, with the permission of his wife (Abbie Cornish), has his life saved by being placed into an armored endoskeleton with the purpose of making him a law enforcement superhero.

In the original, Murphy (well played by Peter Weller) started his crime crusade not really knowing who he was, with memories suppressed. He eventually figured out his identity and solved his own murder.

The new film drastically diverts from the original, having its Murphy freak out upon waking up as a robot, fully cognizant of who he is. It’s only when his emotional stability comes into question that his doctor (Gary Oldman) decides to mess with his brain and shoot him full of dopamine, turning him into a robot zombie.

I heard about this twist in advance, and I didn’t like the sound of it. Alas, the idea of a man knowing full well that he has been turned into a cyborg is a relatively scintillating cinematic topic, and it’s handled well. Murphy’s wife and kid play a bigger part in this story, and that turns out to be fine.

This is still, very much, a RoboCop movie even with the emotional factor and decreased violence. Michael Keaton represents the evil corporation that creates RoboCop. His Raymond Sellars is evil in a more understated way than Ronny Cox’s Dick Jones from the ’87 film, but he’s just as sinister. Michael K. Williams essentially takes over the loyal partner role played by Nancy Allen in the original.

Jackie Earle Haley gets one of his funniest roles ever as a militaristic policeman, while Samuel L. Jackson gets to scream as a sensationalistic talk show host. I guess Jackson is essentially taking over the role played by Leeza Gibbons in the original.

The movie also contains some clever winks to the original, including an army of ED-209s—the cumbersome war machine that fell down the stairs squealing in the original— and a nod to the original look of the RoboCop suit before Keaton’s character switches it to a black model.

RoboCop is a remake that totally rewrites an original in a way that won’t piss off its legions of fans. One hundred years from now, if anybody is watching RoboCop movies, I imagine the Verhoeven film will still be the one most in favor. The new one amounts to a decent enough curio, but it’s not a classic. Ω

About Last Night

American Hustle

David O. Russell continues his impressive directorial roll with this semi-comedic look at the notorious ’70s Abscam scandal. This is basically Russell shooting for Scorsese glory here, and while the style of the movie seems copied at times, there’s no denying the power of the ensemble cast. Bradley Cooper scores laughs as a pathetic FBI agent looking to make a name for himself, and Christian Bale looks great in a comb-over as the conman forced into an alliance with the law. Amy Adams gets one of the strangest roles of the year as a con artist pretending to be British, and she pulls it off quite nicely, while Jennifer Lawrence steals her every scene as a seemingly dim Long Island housewife. You also get stand up comic Louis C.K. as Cooper’s field boss. The film falls a little short of greatness due to its sometimes carbon copy feel, but the cast pulls it out of the fire. It also has the best use of Robert De Niro as a bad guy in many years.

Frozen

I have to admit I was more into the strange Mickey Mouse short that precedes this musical adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Snow Queen” than the actual feature. It features retro Mickey busting out of a black and white film and becoming 3-D as he battles a bad guy kidnapping Minnie. It’s worth the price of admission. As for the actual feature movie, Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel have wonderful voices, and the visuals are fun to behold in this middle-of-the-road Disney fare. It has a lot of music—some of it quite good, some of it, well, not—and a beautiful look to it. For recent Disney animation, my vote goes to Tangled for best, but that’s not to say this one is a letdown. It’s OK. Just OK. It’s about on par with Pixar’s latest, Monster’s University. It’s fun to watch, but not altogether memorable.

The Lego Movie

Fast paced, frequently hilarious, and visually fun, this is the sort of movie we’ve come to expect from Pixar, one that appeals to both kids and adults on many levels. It’s also notable that it isn’t a Pixar film, but a product of the still formidable but inconsistent Warner Brothers animation wing. The plot follows Emmet (Chris Pratt), a “generic” builder as he goes about his homogenized life, building structures under strict deadlines, listening to the same song (Tegan and Sara’s terrific “Everything is Awesome”) every minute of the day, and following the rules of the omnipotent President Business (Will Ferrell). President Business demands conformity in a decidedly socialistic way, but he keeps everybody at bay by promising Taco Tuesdays. Things change instantly when Emmet meets Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), who reveals to Emmet that he’s living in a pre-programmed world, and there’s the possibility for real life beyond its walls (echoes of The Matrix and Terry Gilliam’s Brazil). Emmet joins forces with Wildstyle and her extremely cool boyfriend, Batman (Arnett) to take down the establishment and restore freewill. The Lego Movie is a bit exhausting at times, but at least the constant stream of activity is laced with super intelligence rather than bombastic, vapid visuals. It’s a cliché, but I’ll say it: “Fun for the whole family!”

Lone Survivor

Don’t just file this one away as another unnecessary remake of an ’80s film, because Kevin Hart and company make the latest adaptation of David Mamet’s play Sexual Perversity in Chicago a wildly entertaining endeavor. Hart, who lights up any film he shows up in even when they stink, plays Bernie, a player who finds himself in a relationship with the fiery Joan (Regina Hall). While Bernie and Joan experience a wild rollercoaster ride of sex and spats, Bernie’s best bud Danny (Michael Ealy) winds up dating Joan’s best friend Debbie (Joy Bryant). The two have a one-night stand that turns into a long-term relationship replete with all the problems of a relationship that started up way too fast. The main reason to see the film is Hart and Hall, who are a crack up under the direction of Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine).

However, Ealy and Bryant make for an appealing and intriguing screen couple, so the movie doesn’t nosedive when the action switches to them. It’s better than the original, which starred Rob Lowe, Demi Moore and flippin’ James Belushi.

Screw that movie.

FEATURE STORY

This is an explosive passion project from writer-director Peter Berg that takes an unrelentingly gruesome look at Operation Red Wings, the failed 2005 Afghanistan mission that claimed the lives of 19 American soldiers.

Most of the movie centers on the four Navy SEALs dropped into hostile territory, and how an unfortunate civilian encounter and communications problems led to a massive gun battle of insurmountable odds. Mark Wahlberg plays Marcus Luttrell, the Navy SEAL who co-wrote the book this movie is based upon. Luttrell, along with Navy SEALs Michael Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch) and Matt Axelson (Ben Foster), were performing reconnaissance for a mission meant to capture or kill a notorious Taliban leader when a trio of goat herders stumbled upon their camp. The resultant ambush is filmed with many gory details, and will be a hard watch for some. The stuntmen who worked on this movie did an incredible job, and the cast is one of 2013’s strongest ensembles.

The Monuments Men

Director George Clooney’s war epic about historians racing to save art from the Nazis looks and feels like it was just taken out of a time capsule buried in 1958. It’s quite breezy for a war movie, peppered with laughs provided by a strong cast including Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban and John Goodman as men trying to thwart Hitler’s plan for a giant museum. It has one of those whistle-infused soundtracks, and it doesn’t hurt that Clooney and Dujardin look like Errol Flynn and Gene Kelly. The movie moves briskly, and is perhaps a bit too weightless for a movie of such heavy subject matter. It also has a useless subplot involving Damon and Cate Blanchett.

Still, Clooney has great command of the camera here, the ensemble (especially Murray and Goodman) shines, and it’s fun to watch. This is an interesting piece of World War II history, and it’s good that somebody has made a decent movie to cover this chapter of Hitler insanity.

Nebraska

I can’t deny the wonderful acting work from the likes of Bruce Dern, Will Forte, Bob Odenkirk and especially June Squibb. They are all wonderful in this movie. What I can bemoan is the stupid, stupid story propelling that acting. Dern plays an old codger who becomes convinced that he’s won a million dollars because of a magazine subscription letter saying he’s a winner. So he starts walking from Montana to Nebraska, and his son (Forte) eventually helps him on his quest with an automobile. The premise is too improbable for a serious comedy movie.

Still, it does lay the groundwork for some decent father-son dynamic between Dern and Forte, and Odenkirk shows up as another son and knocks his part out of the park. Of the six Oscar nominations this film earned, I would call Squibb the most deserving for her work as Dern’s droll wife. The black and white cinematography is also quite nice. As for Best Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Actor, I wouldn’t go there. The movie is good in a peculiar way, but far from great.

That Awkward Moment

This romantic comedy starring Zac Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan has a promising start. It actually plays like a cool throwback to the romantic/sex comedies of the ’80s for its opening, until somewhere around the mid point of the movie. Then it takes a drastic downward turn towards comedic Hades and becomes a total garbage party. This ensemble of decent-to-great actors play Jason, Daniel and Mikey (Efron, Teller and Jordan respectively) as some New York City-dwelling 20-somethings dealing with modern day romance in a time of Facebook, texting and infidelity. When Mikey finds out his wife is cheating and he’s heading for divorce, the other two join him in a pact to avoid relationships and stay single. It’s dating and debauchery for the three, with no commitments allowed. The moment when Efron shows up dressed as “Rock Out with Your Cock Out!” for a cocktail party is jarringly stupid. Too bad, because the actors have a hint of comic chemistry, and Imogen Poots is sweet as Efron’s love interest. The fatal flaw of this movie is that rather than sticking to a plan and being a true film about the perils of dating and relationships, it wants to be the new American Pie. Striving to be something that already sucked and falling short means you suck more.

Knight moves Josiah Knight Local folk musician Josiah Knight’s favorite interview question: If you weren’t doing this with your life, what would by Laura Davis you be doing? When the 32-year-old singer/songwriter first moved to Reno three years ago, it took him a moment to regain his footing in music and start performing again.

The activity that consumed his time and attention involved not a guitar and pick, but a needle and thread.

“When I first moved here, I got into knitting instead for a while,” Knight says. “I was just knitting scarves for months.”

The break in habit might seem strange for someone who has been writing songs since childhood and performing in front of people since his early 20s—but Knight is a man of many travels—tales of which commonly appear in his music—and he’s used to taking some down time in between relocations.

“It always kind of happens that way when I move somewhere different because performing is part of what makes me want to keep writing songs, so if I don’t have places that I’m familiar with [to perform], then I’m not as into playing.”

What got Knight back in touch with his musical side, after moving to the Reno area via Portland to be closer to his family, was listening to the records of his inspirations.

“Listening to my favorite music is what brings me back to it every time. I listen to a lot of bluegrass like the Earl Brothers, and other folky stuff like Father John Misty and Shakey Graves.”

So after a little dose of musical TLC, Knight regained his stage legs and ventured out with his guitar, and occasionally ukulele, in hand— performing at open mics such as Java Jungle and Jub Jub’s. Open mics are nothing new to Knight. He not only performs at them, but he hosted a weekly one at a bar out in Portland, a venture he says he’s not likely to undertake again any time soon.

From there, he began asking around town for solo-artist friendly venues—and his stages eventually grew to include a couple different local festivals. As a one-man band, Knight has played at the Americana Festival in Virginia City and Wildstock, the weekend long benefit show for Wildflower Village.

Another surprise Knight has up his sleeve is a recurring theme in many of his storytelling songs. Aside from the occasional melody about drug mules in the ’70s, as told in his single “King of the Mountain”— Knight regularly writes melancholy songs. Something the mild mannered musician, who also dedicates part of his time to working with people with disabilities, hides well behind his friendly, bushy beard.

“There’s a lot of death,” Knight says. “Not to be morbid but it does tend to pop up. A lot of my songs are kind of morose, and I’m not really sure why. It’s just what comes out.”

Despite his fascination with gloom, Knight is a sentimental guy.

He not only keeps in touch with the various characters he has met along the path of his travels, but he also holds a connection with his three 10-year-old dreadlocks. Those few strands have hung on, despite many haircuts.

“I’ve gotten so attached to them that it’s like cutting off fingers at this point,” Knight says. “There’s a lot of history.” But if they ever do meet death upon the sharp points of a pair of scissors, rest assured, there will be a dark song to sing. Ω

Celtic Pub Crawl It may not be St. Patrick’s Day yet, but this month’s Reno Beer Crawl will get into the Irish spirit a month early with its Celtic-themed pub crawl on Saturday, Feb. 22. For $5, beer lovers age 21 and older will get a commemorative glass, wristband and map to more than 15 participating bars, taverns and restaurants, including The Isles, 809 S. Center St., and Ceol Irish Pub, 538 S. Virginia St. For an extra $1, pub crawlers can enjoy 6-ounce samples equaling about half a beer at each of the participating businesses. Grrrrl Noise While the Reno music scene boasts a variety of musical talent, there are too few female rockers tearing up the stage in the Biggest Little City. But this week, Holland Project will attempt to correct that oversight with a showcase of local and regional bands with an all-female lineup or featuring female musicians. Featured acts are Beef Pony, Bam!Bam!, Plastic Caves and Elspeth Summers.

The 12th annual Eagles & Agriculture event provides visitors a chance to experience the arrival of bald eagles and other birds of prey that come to the Carson Valley during the winter calving season. The event, which runs from Thursday, Feb. 20 to Sunday, Feb. 23, attracts photographers, birders and nature-lovers who come to see bald and golden eagles, hawks, falcons, owls and a variety of other bird and wildlife species that circle the fields where cows give birth to their calves. Pamper-resistant I found a funny, loyal, caring boyfriend with a solid career. He pays his share of our bills and even does our laundry! The problem is, at 28, he is so spoiled by his parents. They pay for his car insurance, randomly deposit $200 in his bank account, and even bought him new snow tires. He has made headway on small issues I’ve brought up, like cooking more than bachelor-type foods, but he says, “I’m not calling my parents and demanding they stop paying for my insurance.” I can’t feel we’re in a marriage-potential relationship while he isn’t fully self-sufficient. I worry that we’ll have kids, and he’ll still be getting assistance from mommy and daddy. As an independent person who pays all her own bills, I want my man to do the same.

Just because your boyfriend’s parents give him cash and snow tires doesn’t mean he’s spoiled. Pediatrician Bruce J. McIntosh, who coined the term “spoiled child syndrome,” explains that what makes a kid “spoiled”—sets him on a path to becoming a nasty and irresponsible adult brat—is not parental indulgence but parental overindulgence, meaning parents’ failure to set clear limits and expectations.

McIntosh writes in the journal Pediatrics that overindulgent parents attempt “to meet the child’s complex developmental needs with material gifts and uncritical acceptance while failing to provide essential guidelines for acceptable behavior.” Their spoiled kids grow up into spoiled adults—selfabsorbed manipulators who lack consideration for others, have difficulty delaying gratification, and throw tantrums to get their way—not the guy you describe: loyal, loving and 32 | RN&R |

Aaron Sims The Galaxy Luxury + IMAX theater opened in Sparks at the Legends mall on Feb. 12. General manager Aaron Sims is happy about the turnout so far. The theater has 12 screens, one of which is an IMAX screen. This is the first such theater in the valley, and he expects it to do well because of this.

••• It was nine years ago—February ’05—when one of the most spectacular natural events I’ve ever seen took place. It was the year of the extraordinary Bloom in Death Valley, when it seemed that the entire floor of that scorched desert erupted in one of Queen Flora’s all time great displays.

you’d stumble upon yet another gorgeous rock garden, one perfectly punctuated with an extremely over-the-top arrangement of wild flowers. There was an abundance of gigantic, sweeping, OMG post card shots, featuring millions and millions of the yellow/ orange daisy species called Desert Gold, and there was an abundance of little showstoppers that were fully capable of enchanting the more intrepid searcher. One needed both binoculars and magnifying glass to fully appreciate this outburst. In the end, it was just superbly cool and consistently breathtaking, a memory of a lifetime.

I couldn’t help but think of that special year recently as I drove along highway 190 out of Furnace Creek.

While looking along the road sides and up into the hills, I tried to spy even one blossom, just one—and got zilched. Not one freakin’ flower.
