It’s money that matters Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I learned a lot about Bitcoin while doing the cover story this week, so I decided to buy some.

This is low-cost risk, nowhere near what I had stolen by the banksters with the whole engineered collapse of the economy a few years ago.

You know how a pyramid scheme works, right? The people at the top of the pyramid get rich, but the people at the bottom lose their money. When I first started looking at Bitcoin, I was thinking this was like that—limited supply with demand generated by media hysteria increasing value for the early adopters. But in this one, there is no minimum investment; it’s all based on percentages. So if I lose half my $11 buy-in, I still have the exact same percentage of a bitcoin. Unless the whole thing goes away—which it might—I will always have the potential to get all my money back.

And even though the numbers of participants seems huge, it’s nothing compared to the potential if Bitcoin should go the way it could go. And increased participation increases stability but doesn’t necessarily drive up the price. This is just the sort of thing that totally sends me down geeky rabbit holes.

One of my sources in the story made another point about Bitcoin: While greed and speculation fueled the hysteria that drove the price up a few months ago, that enthusiasm also prevents people from pulling out when there’s an “adjustment.”

That creates the stability that will allow people with unstable governments to keep the wealth they’ve earned without losing it to local forces like inflation.

Sure, people have used the currency to buy bad stuff. It would be a pretty useless currency if it couldn’t be used to buy drugs, guns—whatever the person wants to buy. In fact, expect to hear of a lot of takedowns like Monday’s of Charlie Shrem. It’s a simple formula: The powers that run the financial sector also influence our government, so you can expect them to try to undermine the competition and to prosecute crimes that they don’t prosecute in the traditional financial industry.

Re “Out damned pot” (Upfront, Jan. 16): Too bad pot can’t be mined or fracked, for the Legislature would be behind it 100 percent. But we would have to hire Texans or other foreigners to run the business.

Re “Essay describes Paul activism” (Upfront, Jan. 16): Edwin Lyngar’s frustration with Republican libertarians and embrace of liberalism is like being frustrated with America and moving to Iran.

However, I thank him, because it made me rethink my own party affiliation. The only reason I register as a Republican is to be able to vote in primaries and vote for the most libertarian candidate. However, this is like joining the Nazi Party just so you can vote for the least fascist candidate. It is time for Americans to support and register with third parties. I would guess the majority of Americans are like me. They only vote Republican or Democrat, because they feel voting for a third party candidate is throwing away a vote whereas they can vote for the least worst Republican or Democrat candidate. I don’t have much faith in polls, and I truly believe most Americans are now ready to vote for an independent third party.

The main reason I’m leaving the GOP is the realization that they will never nominate a libertarian as a presidential candidate. Never, never, never, never, never. Republican libertarians need to face reality as I have. We’ve been screwed, and it’s time for us to get mad and ditch the GOP. Libertarian Republicans, I implore you, leave the GOP, leave the GOP now, in droves, in big, large, massive droves. The way they treated us in the 2012 primaries was deplorable and with all the reports of vote tampering and fraud, I have lost faith that the libertarian vote within the GOP will ever count, ever.

America, the Republicans and Democrats do not represent you, and they never will. They are the political wing of big banks and big business. They have increasingly screwed us over especially in the last decade. Your income is shrinking.

Forget the fake government inflation numbers; we are all becoming poorer while the richest are becoming richer. The jig us up. Those in power would have Democrats blame Republicans and Republicans blame Democrats, dividing and conquering

Bob’s a spicy tomato Re “The Bobbit: the desolation of film 2013” (Feature story, Jan. 9): Got to your site after reading movie reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Grimm is my favorite. Love the sense of humor and totally agree with his assessment of best and worst films of the year. Not sure what some of the more well-known film critics were thinking. Probably got sizable payoff from the film companies, considering how utterly wrong and transparently pandering and sycophantic they often are. Or maybe they sleep through the films and just copy what other people say. Or are they just watching the trailers and sucking up the marketing propaganda? Grimm doesn’t run with this brain-dead crowd, but nails the reviews. Even if he is alone in his assessment. Love it. Carry on!

Quite frankly, if an independent liberal third party candidate looked like he or she could take the presidency, I’d vote for him or her over either Republican or Democrat. To me, independence is more important than left or right, and I think the majority of Americans would agree. Big banks and big business are running this country.

False hope Re “Gone to pot” (Feature story, Jan. 23): After a relapse of leukemia, I had a bone marrow transplant and applied for a Nevada medical marijuana card. The State Medical Marijuana website asked for a request letter along with a $50 application fee, which I sent along with a letter from my practitioner. The packet I received completely overwhelmed me. In order to proceed I needed to get fingerprinted, get a Nevada doctor to complete a form, complete a waiver and have it notarized, and submit another $150. If approved, I would receive a temporary letter until the background check was complete, and then I would have to go to the DMV to get my card. The card needs to be renewed each year.

None of this is mentioned on the website, which I found misleading.

NRS 453 is linked to the website, but it’s not very user friendly nor is it mentioned in the instruction letter.

My intent here is not to bash the law or the website, but to give others a heads up before sending in the initial (non-refundable) $50 only to find out it’s complicated and expensive, especially when going through serious medical treatment that could be helped by using medical marijuana.

The whole world is watching I’ve just finished reading Radley Balko’s outstanding book, Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America’s Police Forces, and I think I have a solution to ending our drug war and SWAT raids. Require that all SWAT raids be videotaped before, during and after, with sound. And these tapes must be available to the news media immediately after the raids.

I believe that if all of the raids that involved the wrong address or the killing of any people or pets or in front of children, the public will be outraged and demand an end to them.

For those who have not read Balko’s outstanding book, I suggest they read the introduction and then skip to Chapter 8. If you can set the book down after reading Chapter 8, then you are either a psychopath or sociopath and further reading won’t help you.

The war between Good and Bad is over. The evil ones are the winners.

The reason that we good people lost is because we played fair while the evil ones used every illegal and immoral trick. We prayed, but it did no good.

We wished and we hoped, but to no avail. We called upon ever supernatural power for help, but we got nothing.

Maybe something would happen, but it didn’t. Some of us tried to love our enemies, but laughter was all we got. I gave money to places I thought would help, but all they did was get fat off us suckers.

So where does that leave us little people? We are big in numbers, but they have all the power. Maybe we can unite. But we tried that, and it didn’t work. Then we tried it again with the same result.

I have given up trying to make this a better country. Now I’m looking for a wife. She will have all of my love and when I die, all of my money. That’s the best I can do.

Don’t be a dick, Senator Brower The Nevada Legislature’s response to the mandate in 2000 by Nevada voters to create a system by which sick Nevadans could get access to medicine was childish and a dirty trick on the most vulnerable people in the state.

Like when Mom said, “Quit touching your sister,” and you responded by holding your finger two inches from her ear, “I’m not touching her,” the Legislature followed the words of the law, but let the spirit of the voter-approved law and the intention of voters dissipate like vapor.

Those lawmakers came up with a draconian system, essentially re-victimizing those people who, through no fault of their own, were suffering from things like anxiety, nausea and lack of appetite caused by cancer treatment, Alzheimer’s, side effects of AIDS/ HIV treatment, post-traumatic stress disorder, cholera, insomnia—more diseases than can be easily listed.

And not only were those victims given false hope of humanity from their lawmakers, but they were given huge obstacles to overcome—large costs to those already overcome by medical debt, scrutiny by government agencies unrelated to medical practices, expectations that they would manufacture their own medicine. Even those who were told by the law that they could assist the sick—medical practitioners— came under fire from licensing boards.

Those lawmakers said to those sick people, “Yes, you can seek medical help, but we’ll punish you for trying.” It was nothing short of monstrous.

Yes, in marriage, a few times. I really can’t tell you about that.

And now that the law has been reformed, we are seeing before our very eyes the continuation of that wrongheaded, ignorant, self-righteous government intrusion into the lives of sick people by individuals who think they know better what’s good for sick people than doctors.

This week, Associated Press reported, “Nevada state Sen. Greg Brower said Monday he has reservations about a state law setting up a distribution process for medical marijuana and suggested it could be repealed,” and went on to say that he urged city and county governments to tell the Legislature that the law isn’t working, even though it has not even gone into effect yet.

C’mon, Greg, don’t be a dick. You don’t have to beat up on the infirm to make yourself feel powerful.

Anyone can beat on a child with leukemia. Anyone can beat up a senior citizen with cancer. Denying treatment to veterans with post-traumatic stress syndrome is beneath anyone. You can show compassion.

Legislators are not crazy about ballot measures initiated by voters. We’re not wild about them, either. But this one is law and should be respected by—ahem—lawmakers.

The original initiative was passed by a majority of voters not once, but twice. Lawmakers don’t need to open their minds; they don’t need to judge the people who seek out treatment; they don’t even have to agree. What they do need to do is remember they are responsible to do what the people require of them without acting like spoiled children. Ω

Greed routinely hurts Nevadans Perhaps it’s those 14 years I spent in the Legislature that make me laugh every time I hear a business executive proclaim he will “have a word” with the governor or march up to the Legislature and demand something Nevada no doubt needs, but obviously cannot afford under our current by revenue structure.

At a recent meeting of the Legislative Committee on Health Care, experts provided the newest data on Nevada’s chronic shortage of health care professionals, adding that the problem is bound to get worse as more Nevadans get access to health care under the Affordable Care Act and our existing workforce nears retirement age.

Most of our rankings are at rock bottom, including 51st in the nation for general, orthopedic and specialty surgeons, and 50th in the number of psychiatrists and registered nurses.

A medical school in the region where more than two-thirds of the

state’s population lives does seem like an obvious strategy to address the workforce shortage of trained medical professionals, but it’s going to take an investment from the state to make it happen. Where will that money come from?

Another recent news story featured Education Week’s 2014 Quality Counts report, which once again described Nevada as the state where children have the least chance of success, a ranking we’ve held for the last five years.

State Superintendent of Education Dale Erquiaga gave the usual official response, claiming that new data will show dramatic improvements but glossing over the fact that Nevada ranks 49th for school funding, spending $8,500 per student compared to the national average of $11,900.

A third example of severe underfunding of the state budget emerged in a new legislative audit, pointing out the State Fire Marshal Division has not issued required permits for 43 percent of facilities housing hazardous materials in Nevada. The Division

may not even know where all the hazardous materials are stored.

Another audit made public in January found the state’s Division of Minerals doesn’t have an inspection process to “ensure oil and geothermal are meeting regulatory requirements.” The 11 employees in the division no doubt do their best to review plans required for drilling permits in the state, but they don’t actually go out and inspect the drill sites. No one really knows whether the operations comply with safety and environmental regulations.

The division also works hard to find and notify owners of abandoned mines in Nevada to remind them to install safety equipment. But when the letters are ignored, nothing further is done.

Think something similar to the chemical spill in West Virginia can’t happen here? Think again.

Despite the acknowledgment by some business titans that these issues and others desperately need more state funding, most ignore the evidence of funding neglect, preferring instead

to focus on gearing up to defeat the Education Initiative, a ballot initiative to create the state’s first broad-based business tax. In campaign finance reports filed in mid-January, the coalition to defeat the margin tax posted more than $700,000 in contributions, mostly from the Nevada Resort Association, Retailers Association, Mining Association and the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce.

The sponsor of the measure, the NV State Education Association, raised about $1 million, but advocates expect to be outspent as their opponents prepare a media campaign to persuade voters that Nevada’s economic recovery will disintegrate if the tax is passed.

Few connect the starvation of our basic services in health care, education, and environmental protections to the lack of a broad-based business tax that 47 other states already have.

And those leaders who do connect the dots brush off the Education Initiative, saying it’s “not the right tax” and “not the right time.”

It seems it never is. Ω

Here’s data from the year when Nevada was Number 1 in education spending:

America needs to rethink the Middle East Reid has received over $250,000 in pro-Israel campaign contributions in 2013, while Heller has received over $70,000. Contrast Sen. Rand Paul, who has not signed the bill, and accepted only $5,000 in Israeli PAC money.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) is most associated with this bill. AIPAC has been the guardian of what is acceptable discourse regarding Israel. Their usual tactic is to label criticism of Israel “anti-Semitic.”

In 2001, talk show host Ira Hansen was fired by KOH radio for comments criticizing Israel. He said he was told to “only talk positively about Israel.” Is that still a media policy in Nevada? Ira is now a Republican State Assemblyman.

Nevada Sens. Harry Reid and Dean Heller have sponsored the “Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act” that imposes new sanctions on Iran if passed, even though we are engaged in historical negotiations that would end any attempts by Iran to build a nuclear weapon—and even though there is no actual proof they are.

The legislation demands Iran give up its legal civilian nuclear program entirely, and would commit the U.S. to join any attack that Israel launches against Iran.

Europe. They are closer to Germans than to Arabs. Sanctions on Iran hurt the people in Iran more than the government. They can make it harder for Iranians in Nevada to get bank accounts or loans.

Saudi Arabia and Israel oppose the negotiations with Iran. Israel has been accusing Iran of being six months away from a nuclear bomb since the 1970s. Yet it is an open secret that Israel has at least 80 nuclear warheads itself. These were assembled outside of international law.

Las Vegas casino magnate Sheldon Adelson shockingly suggested last October that we explode a nuclear bomb in the Iranian desert and threaten to drop another one on Tehran, the capital.

What would happen if a wealthy American-Muslim suggested we do that to Israel?

“While the fundamental aspects of the Student Code of Conduct remain the same, several changes have been made to provide clarity to promote a safe and supportive student environment,” read a message sent out to students. “We encourage all students to review the code to understand the expected standards of behavior.”

The changes may have been prompted in part by recent friction with Greek organizations, since at least one change mentions fraternities and sororities.

Two years ago, the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon chose not to sign the usual annual frat/campus agreement, and last year it was accused of creating a front group, Sig Ep Club, after a series of disputes between the frat and the campus.

Last week Sigma Alpha Epsilon declined to sign the frat/campus agreement.

Disputes involving fraternities have also been accompanied by charges that UNR does not have adequate due process procedures for working out those disputes.

The new sections of the code of conduct deal with these topics: 1. Authority: Updated to clarify the ability for the conduct process to continue if a student withdraws after a code violation process has begun.

2. Hearing Board Process: Modified to simplify and clarify the hearing board process. There is now one hearing board with an established recruitment process, script and procedure. This allows for more clarity and security in the appeal process.

3. Title IX (a federal civil rights law outlawing discrimination based on sex in higher education): Address a need to increase adherence to Title IX requirements. Changes were made to the definition of prohibited conduct. Additionally, the Code was updated to address the time requirements for the conduct process.

4. Hazing: In light of events of fall 2012 involving hazing in a fraternity/sorority organization, the definition of hazing was updated to clarify and include both physical and mental/psychological forms of hazing.

5. Harm to Self: Federal law necessitated requiring a student be removed only if the student is a direct threat to others, not if the student is considered a threat for harming him/herself.

One additional clause makes a technical language change. The code of conduct can be read at www.unr.edu/student-conduct/ policies/student-code-of-conduct.

A job left undone II The missing plaque fronts an unfinished grove A good deal of evidence indicates that the Galaxy memorial grove of trees at Rancho San Rafael was never by completed.

Dennis Myers The grove, planned as a memorial for the victims of a 1985 Galaxy Airlines plane crash in south Reno, has been in the news recently because a plaque at the site was stolen.

Paradoxically, while many locals have offered to help replace the plaque, the grove itself appears never to have been completed because of weak community support.

However, that release appears to have extrapolated from the original planned scope of the grove and an assumption that the project came to fruition. Every indication is that it remains unfinished at about 40 trees.

Crash Opening day of the 1985 Nevada Legislature received far less attention than such occasions usually command.

Nearly all news crews in the region were pulled to Reno by the Jan. 21,

1985, crash of Galaxy flight 203, a troubled Lockheed L-188 Electra 4-engine turboprop. The plane carried a large group of Minnesotans who had been in the area on a resort junket. The previous year the craft had served as a campaign plane first of presidential candidate John Glenn and then Jesse Jackson. It generated anxiety within the Jackson campaign and the Secret Service, prompting a Servicerequested probe of the plane’s safety.

In an article on the Galaxy crash, Time magazine said the Lockheed plane was “designed to bridge two aviation ages” because it combined jet engines and propellers.

The plane crashed in a Reno recreational vehicle business about a mile and a half south of runway’s end. Three of the 70 people on board survived, but two of those died shortly afterward, George Lamson on Jan. 29 and Robert Miggins on Feb. 4. George Lamson Jr. was thrown clear, coming to rest on Virginia Street still strapped in his seat. Though he survived, he was plainly a victim of the crash, both because of his injuries and because he lost his father in the disaster.

Seven days short of the one year anniversary of the crash, the National Transportation Safety Board found that the pilot and copilot probably failed to concentrate when strong vibrations shook the plane, causing the crash, and that the ground handlers contributed to the crash by failing to close an access door that caused the vibrations.

Plans for a memorial had several missteps, starting with the location.

At a Jan 25 memorial service for the victims at the Church of the Little Flower, Reno Mayor Peter Sferrazza said there should be a permanent memorial at the site of the crash.

“The city joins the rest of the nation in mourning the loss and in offering condolences to the survivors and relatives,” he said. “A memorial on the site would be an eternal message to those who lost their lives.”

The mayor subsequently named Doris Isaeff to head a group to create a memorial. At some point the idea of a remembrance at the site was dropped and a 70-tree grove of redwoods was born.

“I place this wreath in memory of the 70 souls who perished here one year ago today and the sole survivor,” Isaeff said during a half-hour ceremony at Rancho San Rafael on Jan. 21, 1986.

Salvation Army Maj. Kenneth Angel—then a familiar community leader of efforts to cope with the sudden 1980s rise in homeless in Reno—said the Galaxy Grove would “serve as a reminder that life goes on, reaching up to heaven.”

Family members of crash victim Karen Weaver were on hand at the ceremony and placed some yellow roses on the wreath. “The people of Reno want you to know you are not alone,” Isaeff told them. “God bless you and comfort you.” Lamson Jr. was also present and placed flowers on the boulder from which the plaque was recently stolen. A Reno GazetteJournal photograph of him doing so shows a clear unbroken view behind him toward Sierra Street. Today that view is of the trees that have been planted and grown tall.

Isaeff said the ceremony was the start of efforts to raise $14,000 for the grove. She also said fundraising had been delayed until after the holidays because “people were being asked to give to too many things.”

Fundraising and tree planting began. The next stumble came with the redwoods. They tended to die. The project switched to Colorado Spruce.

Then Isaeff and Coston lost touch. (A George Baxter Coston died Sept. 30, 1988, in Kinston, N.C.) There is little basis for believing the full complement of 71 trees was ever planted. Records are fragmentary.

County park operations superintendent Eric Crump told us, “Based on our records, there were 10 Giant Sequoia trees originally planted in the grove in April of 1987.”

She said casinos, usually a source of charitable donations, had stood aside from the project. “I certainly think some of the clubs should have pitched in, but none ever did.”

Isaeff drew particular attention to Caesars Tahoe, which did not contribute. During that junket, the Minnesotans stayed at Caesars. During the junket, some members traveled to San Francisco for a day trip. The San Francisco group and those who had remained at Lake Tahoe then converged at Reno’s airport for a flight to Minneapolis.

That was the flight that went down in Reno.

By the time Isaeff described the 11-year progress—or lack of it—on the grove, George Lamson Jr. had moved to Reno, of all places. “I can remember when I came out here in ’85, I thought, ‘Gee, this would be a good place to live,’ ” he told the RN&R in 1997.

Isaeff, now deceased, ended her work on the project when a family member became ill. Her son Bill Isaeff, a former Nevada chief deputy attorney general, said this week, “I was never sure if all those trees got planted.” He said that as the project dwindled out his mother told him the project bank account had a small amount of money left in it and he suggested she give it to the county, and he believes she did.

Upon a further search of county records, Crump added some more information. “Our records indicate two donations to the grove, one for $2,400 and another for $100. … We have yet to find any record of additional trees or donations.” There were apparently two funds, one held by the county and one created by the city panel planning the memorial.

He also said a clipping of a Reno Gazette-Journal story came to hand in county files. This was a January 1992 article by Mike Henderson (“Ceremony to mark 7th anniversary of Galaxy crash”) that reported, “Only a dozen trees—at $200 each—were planted.” It quoted Isaeff saying that local flood relief consumed much of local charitable giving.

Forty trees Eleven years after the crash, Isaeff told us, “We planted, oh, I think it was 40 trees before the donations started drying up” (“A job left undone,” RN&R, Sept. 11, 1996).

At that same time, Linda Nelson of the park’s arboretum told us one tree could be planted for $150 and up, depending on the size. (The price may have also been adjusted after the switch to Colorado Spruce.) “You can get a pretty good-sized tree for $150,” Nelson said. She added that the park sought sponsors for already planted trees to help pay for the upkeep of the grove.

There were several missteps in planning the memorial.

Of the plaque, he said, “My mother’s heart would be broken if she knew it had been stolen.”

A visit to the grove site gives little further indication that the grove was completed. There do not appear to be 70—or 60, depending on how many redwoods survived—Colorado Spruce. Moreover, it’s difficult to even tell where the grove is. It is in an area where there are also a St. Patrick’s Grove, a Nevada Bell Grove, and a 20 Year Grove, none of which are clearly delineated and seem to overlap with each other. Nor are there names of crash victims assigned to individual trees.

During our interview with her in 1996, Doris Isaeff said of the failure to complete the grove project, “I feel very bad about it. I truly do.” Ω

New transmission line connects northern and southern Nevada

ON Line, a high voltage electric transmission line connecting northern and southern Nevada’s electric systems, was recently completed and then dedicated in Las Vegas Jan. 23. This is the first time that these two systems have been by Sage Leehey connected.

The project took three years and is jointly owned by NV Energy and s agel@ Great Basin Transmission South (GBTS). GBTS has 75 percent ownernews re view.c om ship of the line and NV Energy has 25 percent. NV Energy currently receives all of the transmission capacity of the line, though, and pays GBTS a lease payment for its portion.

Part of the financing for this project came from a $343 million loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy to GBTS. ON Line is 235 miles long, energized to 500,000 volts and has a transmission capacity of about 800 megawatts. It runs from the newly constructed Robinson Summit substation west of Ely to the Harry Allen Generating Station north of Las Vegas. Connecting the northern and southern portions of the state will mean electricity generated on either side can be used throughout the entire state.

“First of all, it allows us to jointly dispatch electric resources between northern and southern Nevada, which is a capability that we never had before,” said NV Energy acting vice president of transmission Rich Salgo. “And the second benefit is that it allows renewable energy resources in northern Nevada to travel down to southern Nevada to serve the loads. Currently, there are about 665 megawatts of renewable energy in northern Nevada—approximately 100 of those megawatts will be online in the next six to eight months—and those include geothermal, solar and wind power plants. Eleven renewable energy projects are now served by the line. Salgo believes this will greatly benefit the state as a whole.

“It’s a gateway for renewable resources to develop and thrive within the state of Nevada for the benefit for all of our customers,” Salgo said.

“Nevadans are going to get the benefit of entry into the market of renewable resources, removal of barriers to renewable energy development as well as they will gain the benefit of operational efficiencies between our two service territories.”

This connection could also help in the case of resource deficiency in the state because “the transmission line would allow for the other end of the state to utilize resources to help fill that void,” according to Salgo.

NV Energy spokesman Karl Walquist added that he believes the transmission line will help to develop more renewable energy in the state.

“This solves a problem for some of the renewable energy developers out there because prior to this, it was very difficult for them to get into the electricity market and sell their electricity because some of the resources that are available may not be close to a transmission line,” Walquist said. “You’ve got a power plant, but you’ve got to be able to get the power to the customers.” Ω NEWS

The internet currency is more than just a risky investment. It’s a revolution.

The origin of the internet-based currency Bitcoin is mysterious.

It seems most revolutions begin in secrecy. Leaders of political revolutions keep their identities hidden because those who wield power often kill to preserve the ability to wield it. Technological revolutions begin in secret because invention is a clandestine activity, and again, people in charge of the status quo may murder to defend it. Social revolutions often begin in secrecy because they start with an underclass that is forced into hiding by society’s prejudice.

All this secrecy is simply self-preservation on the part of the inventor—undermine the powerful opposition, and the opposition is very likely to kill or arrest someone. But what if the revolutionary gives over his or her revolution to the people without attempting to gain financial or political power from the revolution? You can’t decapitate something that has no head.

A few examples of humanitarian revolutionaries come to mind: Jonas Salk didn’t patent his polio vaccine. Linus Torvalds developed the kernel to the open-source operating system Linux and gave it to the world. Martin Luther King, Jr. certainly didn’t profit from his efforts on humanity’s behalf.

Bitcoin is a disruption to our current financial system, and it has the potential to devastate entire sectors of society. But its birth is also similar to humanitarian revolutions. Part of its launch was very public. In October 2008, someone—maybe an individual, maybe a group—published a paper under the name “Satoshi Nakamoto.” It was titled Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System. Since Bitcoin is open-source, its code is available to and transparent to anyone who wants to examine or improve it—or who wants to seek vulnerabilities.

But only Satoshi Nakamoto knows Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity. There is, of course, speculation: governments, cryptographers, bankers, mathematicians, hackers—all manner of good and bad actors.

“Speculation” is in Bitcoin’s DNA. But speculation has another meaning: investment with the hope of gain but the risk of loss. And the second definition fueled a kind of digital gold rush to Bitcoin that had the word on the lips of some of the world’s largest financiers in 2013. And it was that speculation that took Bitcoin on one index from a value of $13.40 on Jan. 1, 2013, to $1,242 on Nov. 29, and back down to $757 on Dec. 31, 2013. At this moment, it sits at $856.34.

While words like “revolution,” disruption,” and “speculation” may make the timid dismiss Bitcoin as a flash-in-the-pan internet phenom akin to a dancing baby OPINION

Another thing about revolutions is they often begin in bars. And in Reno, the Red Rock Cell is ground zero for Bitcoin.

You say you want a revolution?

Aside from the obvious—an internet-based currency— in a word, Bitcoin is a dream. It’s established upon nothing but people’s willingness to assign and to agree to its value. But this is true for all money. Without everyone’s tacit faith, that paper dollar in your pocket is just paper and ink, with traces of bodily fluids and cocaine. It has no intrinsic value. Even if it still had the backing of gold, and you could take that piece of paper to Fort Knox and get a dollar’s worth of gold, the gold that would hypothetically back it probably has no intrinsic value to you. What are you going to do with it?

Make a crown for your tooth? Make a computer chip that won’t corrode? Make one ring to rule them all?

You? Chances are, you personally couldn’t even buy a loaf of bread at the correct weight. It’s our social agreement that gold has value that makes it worth something.

Those mutually agreed upon rules of money are society’s very glue. You’ve got to trust somebody.

Bitcoin simply asks the question, Are you going to trust a government or are you going to trust a worldwide system monitored and maintained by the individuals most concerned with keeping it stable and valuable?

Jay Yerxa, an IT analyst at Patagonia, has an easy answer to that question. He’s not going to trust government or bankers, both of which favor decisions made by individuals based on opinions, theories or corrupt interests. He’s going with the algorithm.

“We have to trust a third party right now, whether it be a government or the Fed (Are they going to raise interest rates?) or a bank (Is my credit card safe, am I going to get fraud or something?), we have to trust in these third parties. With Bitcoin, it’s a math-based algorithm based on, one, how many are created, and two, how these units are transferred from Point A to Point B.” Think of Bitcoin as a distributed system of trust that grew out of decades of talk about a worldwide currency independent of government. It’s built upon the ideas of early crypto- and digital currencies. Geekier readers will recognize the underpinning concepts of BitTorrent, another peer-to-peer protocol used to exchange large files like movies or music.

Instead of being directed by an individual, like the Fed will be directed by Janet Yellen, it’s run by the millions of individuals who have an interest in seeing it run well and stably—those who use it.

“There’s a giant development community behind it, mostly volunteers, and then there’s a foundation,” says Yerxa. “The foundation [http://bitcoin.org] is the one that kind of listens to the community, but ultimately manages the official Bitcoin software client. They manage that whole process. … So it’s decentralized, but they have that central organization that makes these changes. The neat thing is that this organization can’t just make a change and push it out to everyone, the people have to look at those changes and go ‘OK, I agree with that, I will download the latest version and comply with that.’ ” There have been heated discussions, says the 30-year-old technologist. For example, at one point the community was trying to decide whether to “flag” certain Bitcoins that had been used for illegal purposes. (This was related to the Silk Road drug trade bust.) In Bitcoin, all transactions are public and traceable and stored on the Bitcoin network. Since transactions are attached to addresses, and addresses are attached to the wallets of the individuals—who, for example, present a Bitcoin payment for a Bud Light—there is only a veneer of anonymity.

People who wish to preserve anonymity change their addresses with each transaction and keep different wallets for different purposes.

OK, great, but what is Bitcoin really?

Really, Bitcoin is an online ledger. Just as the money isn’t kept inside one of those big, green ledgers that you used to see at banks, this ledger only records transactions.

God, this stuff is geeky.

What’s goin’ on With something as complex as finance, there are practically infinite areas on which to focus and geek out. Simplifying complex Bitcoin concepts to the point of being intelligible to

the unschooled risks oversimplifying for the informed. However, attempting to express nuances runs the risk of leaving Bitcoin in the hands of the elite, which is the opposite of what was intended by the currency’s creators, and against the best interests of the system, which gains stability with increased buy-in. Suffice it to say, just as one doesn’t have to know how a cell phone works in order to use it, Bitcoin can be used by anyone who can use a cell phone.

Unlike gold, which gets produced at a greater rate as its value increases, bitcoins are created in a fairly predictable arc, which actually decreases with time and use. As the plan stands, there will only be 21 million bitcoins created. At this moment, there are about 12.2 million bitcoins, which right now are equivalent to around US $10 billion. The last bitcoin is expected to be created in 2140. The curve of bitcoin creation is pretty easy to visualize: In the first four years, 10.5 million bitcoins were created. That number will decrease by half every four years, so 5.25 in the next four years, and so on.

“That’s the hard part,” says Yerxa. “It sounds like 21 million bitcoins is a very small number, but because it’s divisible eight decimal points, it’s actually over 2 quadrillion in the total units that can be created.”

Bitcoins are divisible down to eight decimal points (0.00000001 BTC). Since a bitcoin could theoretically be worth $10,000, the necessity for division is obvious—you wouldn’t want to buy a $10,000 beer, right? The divisions have vaguely metric names, like for example, 0.001 BTC can be called an mBTC or a millibitcoin or a millibit. But with the 24-hour volatility of the Bitcoin market, you’ll be paying a different price for each beer. It seems a careful observer could potentially decide whether to pay for his or her beers one at a time, or if the price is trending down, start a tab. In reality, though, the price is set—say $3 for a Bud Light—and it’s the Bitcoin number that changes; the value paid stays the same.

For those who want to get their feet wet by actually buying some tiny fraction of a bitcoin, the simplest way to get started is to join an exchange. Sources mentioned Coinbase.com several times, but that’s not an endorsement.

account and main household accounts.

The biggest risk to the Bitcoin user is through the exchanges, where passwords may be hacked, and unscrupulous owners could steal the bitcoin data stored on their servers. Exchanges have even been hacked like Target, and there is no FSDIC to insure accounts, although there are Bitcoin insurance companies springing up. If that isn’t worrisome enough, another risk is the operating software—that there’s an unexploited bug waiting to hatch that could bring down the whole system. Risks aside, if you want to exchange bitcoins for American dollars, exchanges are one of the main ways to do it.

Much of the buying and selling takes place through cellphone apps. Various “wallets” with various features can be found at the usual places.

Do some research. It’s money. It’s risky.

But if you really want to geek out on risk factors, Google the “51 percent attack” and “the greedy miner theory.”

The times they are a-changin’ In some ways, Reno can be considered an early adopter of this technology. Startups like Robocoin, https://robocoinkiosk.com, are reportedly taking their Bitcoin accepting ATMs to China. Mayberry Salon barber Josh Arias, www.barberarias.com, was featured in the story “8 things you can buy with bitcoins right now” on CNN Money. Storm 5, http://storm5.com, a cloud service provider is the only other one listed on the site, http://coinmap.org, which lists businesses that accept Bitcoin. There are some 29 in Nevada, including at least one casino in Las Vegas.

But national companies like Overstock.com have started accepting the currency, so you know the coffee shops, restaurants and retail stores are not far behind.

“When vendors start accepting it, that’s key,” Yerxa says. He’s a true believer, and probably Reno’s chief evangelist for Bitcoin. He got in when a coin cost less than $30, so he’s definitely got a dog in the fight. He’s even prototyping a machine to create a hardcopy receipt for Bitcoin transactions. “And that’s what brings me to places like Red Rock to talk to guys like Kevin [McGehee], to say, ‘Hey, I think this is a really

cool idea.’ I get motivated to talk to business owners because I don’t see it taking off unless businesses accept it. I don’t think we can all just trade it, just speculate. Eventually it’ll just collapse. But if businesses are accepting it, if families are sending money back to Mexico because it only costs them 3 percent instead of whatever Western Union is charging them [actually, that transaction is potentially free with Bitcoin through a shared account], I think those applications are real and help and are useful, and that’s why it’ll be successful.”

Yerxa points out that there are challenges for the retailer. It’ll create bookkeeping hassles of the sort experienced in countries where multiple types of currency are accepted. How are gratuities handled? Or what if someone bought $1,000 bucks worth of Bud Light when Bitcoin was at $1,000, and then Bitcoin drops down to $700? As might be expected, infrastructure like payment processors, analogous to Visa or Mastercard, have sprung up that transfer the Bitcoin into U.S. dollars at the moment of transaction in order to minimize risks. And, Yerxa says, Bitcoin transactions are cheaper than Visa or Mastercard. There is another benefit to retailers: there is no “credit card fraud,” with Bitcoin.

If a transaction is made, the money is there; it can’t be reversed.

“At Red Rock, they have QR codes on the tabletop tents,” he said. “When it comes time to settle up, the bartender will tell you the total—the exchange rate is decided on the phone.

The purchaser just punches the total into the phone, scans the QR code, and in a few minutes, the transaction is confirmed. It’s easy, but it’s not easy enough.”

Talkin’ ’bout a revolution Kevin McGehee, owner of the Red Rock Studios, is a recent convert, but nobody who knows him would be surprised by his conversion. An old-school fiscal conservative, he seems to fall square into the U.S. demographic that love the concepts that have buoyed up the e-currency (and its price). But, maybe surprisingly, it’s Bitcoin’s humanitarian and sociological underpinnings that really sold him on it.

“We started accepting Bitcoin in November,” he said. “It’s becoming more and more

I think it appeals to people who are willing to assume a little more risk to feel like they’re in the game.” But he finds safety in Bitcoin’s transparency: “Bitcoin is like a giant glass room that is completely secure and totally safe, and everyone can see what’s in the center of the room is the giant pink piggy bank. And everyone can participate and everyone can see it.”

The revolution starts ... now Maybe this currency really does have a heart at its heart. Mark Pitchford, treasurer for the Reno Initiative for Shelter and Equality, www. renoinitiative.org, which helps feed and clothe homeless people in Reno, says while the thing called “Bitcoin” may pass, something like it will rise. He’s another enthusiastic user and prophet.

RISE is accepting Bitcoin donations, possibly the first nonprofit in Nevada to do so.

“Adoption is inevitable,” he said. “We’re not talking local, we’re talking worldwide. Bitcoin is not better than the dollar—the dollar is the world standard. Bitcoin is better than 70 of the 130 currencies out on the market. In Nicaragua or other Third World countries, their inflation level is about 30-40 percent. The grandfather who has been working all his life to have a future for his grandsons loses all that wealth in the matter of a year, matter of a decade, a matter of 15 years. When you’re talking about a worldwide economy that’s intermixed with every single

Kevin McGehee something that people want to participate in and be a part of. I believe in it. … To me, it makes financial transactions more humane. It’s not controlled by a central bank. I just think that banking has become such a corrupt instrument that nobody can manage it. It’s terrible. What Bitcoin does is it makes everything fair.”

It’s those kinds of ideas that probably predict conventional governments’ reactions: Currency is their sandbox, and they don’t want other kitties making messes. Canada ruled that Bitcoin is not legal tender. While the United States government is the largest holder of Bitcoin on the planet

at around $28 million worth, it’s expected to make a general ruling on its status by the end of the first quarter. You can bet Uncle Sam will cash out his Bitcoin holdings for American if he decides to make the claim that the stuff is without value. Such a large dump on the market could give vigilant “investors” a big opportunity.

China had a regulatory crackdown this month (although not the ban that mainstream media made it out to be).

McGehee says that none of this stuff is unexpected, and as is often the case, governments will have to be shown the proper response.

But Pitchford, too, must return to the risky nature of a Bitcoin investment. There’s going to be a dotcom bubble with the Bitcoin, he says. It might have been the precipitous drop in November, or it may be a crash yet to come, “but it’s going to level out and then the utility and the ideas behind it and the consistency of its use will prove itself to the point it will be adopted and mainstream.”

He distinguishes between the currency and the protocol, the software framework, behind it.

While this version of the currency very well may go away, as its weaknesses are parsed out and protected against, the next one or the one after that will be sustainable.

“Whether it be Bitcoin or whatever the future holds, the Pandora’s box has been opened,” he declares passionately. “There’s a need for this currency to exist and that’s not because the U.S. dollar sucks; it’s because 60 percent of the other countries’ money sucks, and they need to replace them. And this is the replacement, and it will actually hold wealth. This particular instance might not, but the next one will. And if that doesn’t, the next one will. Right now, in Third World countries, all you need is a cell phone and texting ability, and you can transact.

Anyone with a text messaging ability can use the currency. ... If you think this money is for the rich white people in America, you’re wrong. It’s for the poorest of the poor who lose the value of their money.

“Our first-world complaints about the Bitcoin: irrelevant.”

And that is what revolutions are made of. Ω

Lystra Pitt, the act of shooting an arrow is as natural as playing with a puppy. The owner of Reno’s indoor archery range, Wasting Arrows, theorizes that the ability to work a bow is hardwired into our collective DNA. You see, around 8,000 BC, early man was working out the kinks of the bow and arrow right around the time he was domesticating dogs.

“I tell people everyone has an instinctive ability to work with dogs,” Pitt said. “You see a dog, and you know if a dog is happy or a dog is sad, and you can communicate with a dog. Well, it’s the same thing with bows. We’ve developed instinctive abilities to shoot a bow.”

Judging from the popularity and wide client base of Wasting Arrows, Pitt might just be on to something.

Lystra and his wife, Deana Pitt, opened the indoor archery range about a year ago. The biggest

attraction at Wasting Arrows is its 5,500-square-foot archery facility with 22 20-yard lanes. The range offers lessons, equipment rentals, leagues and tournaments, along with birthday parties and youth programs.

Most sporting-goods stores have a range for archers to try out equipment, but those aren’t meant for any sort of practice. Wasting Arrows does have a small pro shop in the front of the facility, where they sell Precision Shooting Equipment bows, targets and all the accessories necessary to sling arrows, including the arrows.

Renting a lane runs $15 an hour.

Those without their own equipment can rent a bow for $10 a day. For the totally uninitiated, the range offers private intro lessons for $45 an hour.

Lystra said part of why he loves archery is for its “easy to learn, hard to master” nature. He said it’s something everyone can do, and after an hour-long lesson, most people will feel comfortable with a bow and should be able to score their first bull’s-eye.

For those who like their first taste, the shop can set them up with

everything they need to become an avid archer. Lystra said the hobby has a low cost to entry. A good beginner recurve bow, the more traditionallooking weapon, sells for about $150, though the store sells a $40 recurve bow as well. The more modern compound bow, with all the gears and pulleys, runs for about $300.

Wasting Arrows also has an array of events to keep beginning and advanced archers coming back.

There are weekly shooting leagues, monthly tournaments and the shop also participates in a national youth archery program.

The novelty tournaments are one of the biggest draws. During October, archers squared off in a zombie hunt, and in December, they popped Christmas ornaments off cardboard trees.

“It was so much fun,” Lystra said. “There was a lot of Christmas frustration getting vented.”

The weekly leagues are also popular attractions. Monday nights are for adult group lessons, and Tuesdays are reserved for the advanced league. On Wednesday nights, the Silver Arrow Bowman

club sets up its ark of 3-D Styrofoam target animals. Archers also get the chance to slay flying— hanging—dragons and a velociraptor during the 3-D shoot. Thursdays are the beginners’ league and Fridays Night Flights features trap shooting.

Saturdays hold the youth league.

When Wasting Arrows opened about a year ago, it filled a void that has been empty in the area for about 15 years. Though Reno has a few gun ranges, there was no place to shoot an arrow indoors since the area’s only archery range, Pacific Archery Sales, closed in the ’90s.

The idea to bring back indoor archery to Reno germinated in March 2012, when the couple purchased a trap machine. They brought the machine to archery shoots and set it up on a friend’s property about 20 minutes east of Reno to teach lessons. Though they were getting lots of business, the surroundings were less than ideal.

“It was windy, and hot and cold and dusty,” Lystra said. “We were fighting the weather all the time. We had to cancel because we had 90 mile an hour winds [one] day.”

After hearing the grumblings of local archers nostalgic for the good ol’ days and missing an indoor range themselves, the idea dawned on them. At the time they both were in the construction business. As it started to slow down, the two were looking for new careers. Starting a range made a lot of sense.

They knew rental prices around Reno would be pretty cheap and both were already certified instructors, so they drew up a business plan and found a space on Double Diamond Parkway in South Reno.

The place opened November 2012, and they have been shooting arrows ever since.

When the Pitts opened Wasting Arrows they thought the place would only attract bow hunters and those looking to keep their skills sharp between competitions.

But Deana said a majority of their business comes from families with children.

Kids today love bows and arrows, according to Tim Thomas, archery education coordinator for the Nevada Department of Wildlife and a patron of Wasting Arrows. A big part of Thomas’s job is running archery programs in schools, and he said arrows are having their own popular culture renaissance.

“It started with Lord of the Rings and the elves,” Thomas said.

Movies, such as Brave and The Hunger Games, and TV shows, like Arrow, have fueled the fletching fervor. Popular video games Assassin’s Creed 3 and the last iteration of the Tomb Raider series heavily feature bows. And in the 2012 London Olympics, archery was one of the most tweeted-about sports in the games.

Lystra can understand this impulse to get into archery because of popular culture. After all, he begged his dad for a bow when he saw Rambo as a teenager in the ’80s.

With all these bow-wielding heroines and heroes, it’s no wonder Wasting Arrows is bursting with kids, especially during the recent winter break. They had to offer more youth archery classes because class sizes got too big.

When you get a group of kids together and give them a bunch of pointy sticks to shoot, most parents start to ask questions about safety.

But a dedicated range master armed with a whistle controls the chaos making sure no one gets stuck with an arrow. Thomas said that in the 10 years the National Archery in the Schools program has been running, the organization had had zero injuries.

“It is safer than any ball sport they play in school,” Thomas said.

“I think the only ball sport that beats us out is Ping Pong, in terms of safety.”

Wasting Arrows also participates in Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD), a national program that allows young archers to compete in mail-in archery tournaments and recruits the best to compete in the Olympics.

In these leagues, boys and girls compete together on a level playing field. And when you talk to passionate archers like the Pitts and Thomas, they say they love the diverse nature of the sport, that anyone can be an archer—boy or girl, young or old. Thomas remembers a demo by two paralympian archers, one who shot with only his legs and the other who shot despite missing an arm and a leg.

“It’s such an eclectic group of people,” Deana said. “We’ve got bow hunters and target shooters and moms and kids and lawyers and hippies, we just have such a wide group of people who shoot.

It’s amazing to see the diversity of archers on the line.” Ω

Buried Child I won’t lie: I walked out at the end of Reno Little Theater’s production of Buried Child by wondering, “What the hell just happened?”

Jessica Santina It’s not RLT’s fault. Playwright Sam Shepard intentionally crafted this dark tale so that his audience would scratch their heads and puzzle infinitely over its unanswerable questions.

What RLT has done with Shepard’s Buried Child, by sam Pulitzer Prize-winning work, though, is to shepard and directed deftly create a chilling atmosphere, and

In its deceptively funny first act, a grizzled, wise-cracking Dodge (played by acting veteran Blair Anthony) lies on a filthy, uninviting couch under a grungy blanket. The sound of rain seems to batter the house and seep into the room, adding to the dank, dirty atmosphere. His wife, Halie (Terri Gray), calls various accusatory and inane questions to Dodge from upstairs, while he sneaks swigs from a bottle of whiskey.

Early on, several premises are quickly established: 1) Dodge is clearly an alcoholic; 2) he and Halie had three sons— Tilden, Bradly and Ansel; 3) Ansel, the favorite, was apparently murdered by his Catholic wife in a hotel room, though the details on that are sketchy at best; 4) Bradly (Corey Cicci) is a veteran, a kook and an amputee, having cut off his own leg with a chainsaw; and 5) Halie has a bit of a whore/ saint duality going on.

As the story begins to progress, we see Halie all dolled up for her “meeting” with Father Dewis (Rob Shader) to plan a statue memorializing Ansel. Their eldest

son, Tilden (Chris Taylor), who clearly has a mental handicap of some sort, somehow manages to find a wealth of crops from farmland that Dodge and Halie insist hasn’t been sown since the ’30s.

Tilden has sown something else, too—a son named Vince (Drew Shafer) who stops in with his girlfriend, Shelly (Anna Pidlypchak), for a visit at his grandparents’ house. What they discover there is a madhouse full of horrible people who’ve done unspeakable things. And when the final, terrible secret is revealed, you’re left asking the person next to you, “Wait a minute, did I just hear what I think I heard?”

Performance-wise, Pidlypchak’s Shelly seemed abrasive, despite needing to be the realistic lens through which we view this bizarre home.

Although Shepard’s characters are complex and hard to like, I still felt that a few of the performances were awkward and stiff.

Nonetheless, Anthony’s Dodge is corpse-like and repugnant—as he should be—and yet somehow captivating. And Chris Taylor offers an authentic portrayal of mental illness, making Tilden both lovable and creepy. His final appearance on stage isn’t something you’re likely to forget.

Several themes emerge here, including the disparity between American life and the American Dream, the idea that history repeats itself, and the way identity can be both separate from and linked to family.

You’re forced to consider which evil is worse: the instant and violent, or the silent and insidious.

You’ll likely wind up feeling like I did—that there are more questions raised than answered. Ω

The mango salsa, with a little cilantro, red onion, lime juice and chopped tomato, was mildly spiced.

Most Salvadorian dished are not heavily spiced, and many seasoning profiles have a slight sweetness. I’ll take the grilled fish, just my preference, but the deep fried had a Corona beer batter and both had plenty of flavor savory with a hint of sweet.

I saw homemade Salvadorian tamales ($1.99) wrapped in a banana leaf. These are made using corn flour. I had a chicken tamale, and it was surrounded by a smooth textured corn-flavored roll with savory meat in the middle atop the banana leaf, adding a hint of sweetness.

You may notice the prices seem very modest, and that’s because a lot of the servings are small, and that’s a good thing. It gives you a chance to try many things without overeating.

The real treat came with the traditional Salvadorian pupusas ($1 each). A pupusa is a dish made of a thick, handmade corn tortilla using masa de maíz, corn dough made from hominy. These were about six inches in diameter with your choice of fillings such as pork, bean, cheese, zucchini, spinach or Loroco flower. Loroco flower has a distinctive taste, a highly aromatic, earthy, artichoke-like flavor with overtones of nuts.

Pupusas are traditionally served with curtido, a pickled cabbage relish, analogous to German sauerkraut and Korean kimchi that comes in mild and spicy varieties, this was a bit spicy, since jalapenos were used.

These are served all day. I went with rebuelta (pork, beans and rice) and queso con calabaza (cheese and zucchini). There is a tomato sauce for dipping, and again, not over powering in flavor rather a slightly acidic complement. Attention foodies, put this on your “must try” list. They were delicious, with exceptional savory flavor profiles true to the stuffing ingredients.

They’re still waiting for a beer and wine license, so soft drinks including Jarrito are offered. This is more than a story about food; it’s a story of one immigrant’s belief that America is the land of opportunity. Pull up a chair and prove him right. Ω

He built this 22-seat space remembering what his mother’s home and kitchen looked like back in his birth-land. Rippled tin, a terracotta tile awning, and re-used wood tables make it real and sincere. He and his staff serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the menu ($1-$8.99) is a combination of Mexican and traditional El Salvadorian cuisine.

The cuisine of this Central American country really came to the forefront in this country because of the significant influx of Salvadorians to the U.S. during that country’s civil war in the 1980s.

Everything is made when ordered. The recipes are original, and everything is housemade, something Arevalo assured with proud enthusiasm. Tortilla soup ($2.99 cup-$4.99) caught my eye. With a fish stock, fresh vegetables, chicken pieces and crisp corn strips, it was subtle with a slightly savory-spicy flavor that make me think “mm-mm good” but not too bold for my taste buds.

I’m always looking for a good fish taco ($1.99 each), and I tried both deep fried and grilled. My standardof-measure is based on what I get on the docks in Cabo, a must when off the tip of Baja. Both were served with a mango salsa on doubled, six-inch soft corn taco shells.

I, Frankenstein When I took a look at the slate of movies coming out in January 2014, there was a date on the calendar that I found particularly disturbing and foreboding.

That would be January 24, the release date for I, Frankenstein. I feared that date like an ardent Coke drinker with a saltwater taffy addiction and a taste for meth would by fear a dental appointment.

mathematics. Seeing I, Frankenstein, even for a few minutes, could diminish your sperm count, cause irreversible eye fungus, and make you inconsolably sad.

OK, maybe I should talk about why the film is so crappy, and less about how it will do things like make your ears fall off and create Hell’s vortex in your left nostril.

Aaron Eckhart, in a career move that’s as fatal as the time Halle Berry said, “Sure, I’ll play Catwoman. What’s the worst that could happen?” plays Adam Frankenstein, a.k.a.

Frankenstein’s Monster. Adam—and I’m going to just call him Adam for the purposes of this review because it’s cute—has led a lonely, undead life for the hundreds of years since he was first stitched together and brought to life by crazy science involving electric eels.

Adam has spent those years scowling a lot, and hitting demons with sticks like some sort of super ninja. His look has progressed from gothic longhaired badass to clean cut, but probably stinky, metrosexual, replete with a hoodie/trench coat that is just to die for.

Really, Adam’s coat is the best thing about the movie, and I confess to wanting one.

The film takes place in modern day England, where some sort of demon prince (Bill Nighy … OF COURSE!) wants to create an army of Frankenstein Monsters so that he may defeat some sort of gargoyle army that equates to the good guys in this movie. I’m not making this up—demons vs. gargoyles aided by a semi-reluctant Adam Frankenstein in a kickass jacket. That’s the plot.

Eckhart doesn’t crack a smile for the whole movie. He never once changes his expression, which might make sense in a Frankenstein sort of way, but makes for monotonous movie viewing. His every line is delivered with a growly croak that sounds like he’s trying to take first place at a movie trailer voiceover contest, or first place in an over earnest, far-too-dramatic, completely vacuous douche contest. He’d probably win the latter.

Did I mention that there were gargoyles in this movie? The Gargoyle Order, or whatever the hell it is, is led by Leonore, played by once promising Lord of the Rings actress Miranda Otto. When Leonore switches from human to gargoyle form, her chest is void of nipples, for this is a PG-13 rated movie, and we just won’t stand for that sort of thing.

There are various poorly staged 3-D battles between demons and gargoyles, and I honestly had no freaking idea what was really going on. I know the demons looked like they were wearing dollar store Halloween masks, and they were trying to fight for the journal of Victor Frankenstein for the recipe on how to reanimate humans. (I think one of the ingredients was coriander.)

As for the post-production 3-D, it is the worst I’ve ever seen. It’s a big mess up there on the screen, with the once reliable Eckhart presiding over it.

No, seriously, what the hell were the producers thinking when they set about making this thing? Putting a new twist on Frankenstein is one thing, but turning him into an ab-tastic ninja with a surly attitude, sexy scars and snappy hoodie is truly pushing it.

I, Frankenstein? More like I, Franklyblow-ass! Ω

David O. Russell continues his impressive directorial roll with this semi-comedic look at the notorious ’70s Abscam scandal. This is basically Russell shooting for Scorsese glory here, and while the style of the movie seems copied at times, there’s no denying the power of the ensemble cast. Bradley Cooper scores laughs as a pathetic FBI agent looking to make a name for himself, and Christian Bale looks great in a comb-over as the conman forced into an alliance with the law. Amy Adams gets one of the strangest roles of the year as a con artist pretending to be British, and she pulls it off quite nicely, while Jennifer Lawrence steals her every scene as a seemingly dim Long Island housewife. You also get stand up comic Louis C.K. as Cooper’s field boss. The film falls a little short of greatness due to its sometimes carbon copy feel, but the cast pulls it out of the fire. It also has the best use of Robert De Niro as a bad guy in many years.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

After nearly a decade of being absent from our movie screens, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell), the world’s greatest newscaster, has returned. This time, it’s the ’80s, and a new media craze called 24 Hour News has Ron and the boys (Paul Rudd’s Brian Fantana, Steve Carell’s Brick Tamland and David Koechner’s Champ Kind) working the late night shift in New York. The plot is basically just a place setter for weird, random humor involving bats, sharks, shadows, scorpions in RVs, and hair. Ferrell and the crew manage to sell the dumbest of things, and they make so much of it funny. Even the stuff that’s just strange has its own humorous appeal. Carell goes super dopey with Brick as he finds a love interest (Kristen Wiig), Champ still loves Ron in a dangerous way, and Brian has a new condom cabinet. I laughed my face off, with this being a sequel that continues the comedic legacy of the brilliant original, and even ups the ante when it comes to anchor-on-anchor battles in the park (the battle scene in this one is one for the ages, and involves fighter jets).

The last time they made one of these, they had enough on the cutting room floor to release an entire other movie. I hope that happened here as well, because I don’t want to wait 10 years for more.

Dallas Buyers Club

Matthew McConaughey continues his career resurgence in this film based on the life of Ron Woodroof, a man who tested HIV positive in the ’80s, and had to battle the FDA while smuggling non-approved drugs into the country for himself and fellow sufferers. McConaughey lost many pounds to look the part, and it’s a frightening transformation. He also delivers an incredible performance. This, combined with his work earlier this year in Mud, easily establishes 2013 as the best year of his career. Jared Leto does incredible work as Rayon, a cross-dresser who helps Woodroof distribute the drugs to those needing some sort of treatment. Director Jean-Marc Vallee does a good job of capturing a time where HIV was a death sentence, and the terror that surrounded those who were fighting for their lives. This is a very good movie with great performances.

Frozen

I have to admit I was more into the strange Mickey Mouse short that precedes this musical adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Snow Queen” than the actual feature. It features retro Mickey busting out of a black and white film and becoming 3-D as he battles a bad guy kidnapping Minnie. It’s worth the price of admission. As for the actual feature movie, Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel have wonderful voices, and the visuals are fun to behold in this middle-of-the-road Disney fare. It has a lot of music—some of it quite good, some of it, well, not—and a beautiful look to it. For recent Disney animation, my vote goes to Tangled for best, but that’s not to say this one is a letdown. It’s OK. Just OK. It’s about on par with Pixar’s latest, Monster’s University. It’s fun to watch, but not altogether memorable.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Peter Jackson’s decision to shoot his latest Tolkien trilogy in High Frame Rate 3-D is a tragic, disastrous choice. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, like its predecessor, An Unexpected Journey, is a task to watch. The look of the movie simply doesn’t jibe with the

technology, resulting in a visual nightmare. As a middle chapter in The Hobbit saga, Smaug is guilty of the same flaws that marred the first film. It’s overstuffed, the dwarves are severely uninteresting, and the action scenes lack any kind of urgency. It’s just a big, boring stunt film with people looking silly in their getups. As Bilbo, Martin Freeman labors to make things interesting during action scenes that feel redundant.

(Hey, it’s another giant icky spider attack!) He definitely stands out among a cast of bland actors playing bland dwarves. Oh Gimli, how you are missed! Jackson finds a way to bring back Orlando Bloom as Legolas. Bloom’s scenes are a bunch of sorry minutes that could be cut from the film’s running time. Too many scenes in this movie feel padded and bloated. With each passing minute, Jackson is doing further damage to his directing legacy. His original Lord of the Rings trilogy was a major triumph. These Hobbit films feel and look like parody. Smaug the dragon (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) finally shows up, and he is easily the best thing in the Hobbit films thus far. He should’ve arrived in the second half of the first film, and the whole damned thing should’ve been over in three hours.

Lone Survivor

This is an explosive passion project from writer-director Peter Berg that takes an unrelentingly gruesome look at Operation Red Wings, the failed 2005 Afghanistan mission that claimed the lives of 19 American soldiers.

Most of the movie centers on the four Navy SEALs dropped into hostile territory, and how an unfortunate civilian encounter and communications problems led to a massive gun battle of insurmountable odds. Mark Wahlberg plays Marcus Luttrell, the Navy SEAL who co-wrote the book this movie is based upon. Luttrell, along with Navy SEALs Michael Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch) and Matt Axelson (Ben Foster), were performing reconnaissance for a mission meant to capture or kill a notorious Taliban leader when a trio of goat herders stumbled upon their camp. The resultant ambush is filmed with many gory details, and will be a hard watch for some. The stuntmen who worked on this movie did an incredible job, and the cast is one of 2013’s strongest ensembles. This is a nice comeback for Berg after Battleship.

Nebraska

I can’t deny the wonderful acting work from the likes of Bruce Dern, Will Forte, Bob Odenkirk and especially June Squibb. They are all wonderful in this movie. What I can bemoan is the stupid, stupid story propelling that acting. Dern plays an old codger who becomes convinced that he’s won a million dollars because of a magazine subscription letter saying he’s a winner. So he starts walking from Montana to Nebraska, and his son (Forte) eventually helps him on his quest with an automobile. It’s a dumb idea to start, and the premise is too improbable for a serious comedy movie. Still, it does lay the groundwork for some decent father-son dynamic between Dern and Forte, and Odenkirk shows up as another son and knocks his part out of the park. Of the six Oscar nominations this film earned, I would call Squibb the most deserving for her work as Dern’s droll wife. The black and white cinematography is also quite nice. As for Best Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Actor, I wouldn’t go there. The movie is good in a peculiar way, but far from great.

The premise annoyed me a bit the whole time I watched it.

Saving Mr. Banks

Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson are charming as Walt Disney and Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers in this obviously whitewashed look at Disney’s attempts at getting Travers’ approval to make a movie out of her book. Of course, most of us know he succeeded, but many don’t know that Travers was quite the holdout. The movie splits time between the Disney/Travers business and Travers’ childhood, where we find out much of Mary Poppins was based on her troubled father (Colin Farrell) and actual nanny. B.J. Novak and Jason Schwartzman are wonderful as the Sherman brothers, who made Poppins into a musical, much to the chagrin of Travers. The movie takes a lot of artistic license with the situation. Even though Travers is depicted as difficult here, she was far more adversarial in real life and never approved of the movie (those animated penguins!). Still, the film is fun to watch, with Hanks and Thompson making it all very worthwhile and heartwarming.

He put on a wetsuit, to get ready to go, and he was telling us where we were going to dive. And then he went and put another wetsuit on over top of the first one. And I was with my brother-in-law, who’s kind of a goofy guy anyway, and is exactly the sort of guy to not let something like that slide without asking about it, ‘Dude, what’s up? What’s up with the two wetsuits?’

So the Dutch guy turns to us and says, ‘Well, you see, with just one wetsuit, I can’t contain the sexy.’

“So we were joking about it, drinking beers later that night and, ‘You know,’ I thought, ‘this is a good idea for a song.’”

That song, “Two Wetsuits,” with the ready-made chorus hook, “I can’t contain the sexy, I can’t contain the sexy with just one wetsuit,” leads off Aversion Therapy’s new album, Snake Oil. The 10-song collection of upbeat, relatively straightforward pop-rock was recorded at Dogwater Studios in Sparks and was released on the local label Cherrybear Records. The album, the band’s second, is distinguished by the humor and wit of the songwriting.

Other songs include “Raver Girl,” an ode to a drug-fried Burner chick, and “Train Trench,” a facetious song extolling the nonexistent tourist appeal of downtown Reno’s train trench.

In their live show, Aversion Therapy also include some wellchosen cover songs, like Lady Gaga’s “Born Like This,” redone as a sort of AC/DC-like rock tune, with added mash-up lyrics from Madonna’s

“Express Yourself,” the Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil” and Guns ’n’ Roses’ “Paradise City.” They’ve also been known to do themed sets, like all superhero songs for the Superhero Crawl or Christmas tunes for the Santa Crawl.

“It was bizarre when I joined this band last year,” says lead guitarist Denis Phares. “I found a Craigslist ad, that’s how I found the band, and the ad was like, our influences are Christmas songs, superhero songs, TV theme songs. I was like, what the fuck is this?”

“But that’s partly how we knew Denis was the right guy, that he could read an ad like that and actually want to find out what it was all about,” says Humphreys.

It’s fun, funny music played well. Humpreys, Phares, drummer Bruce Gonyea and guitarist Henry King all know their way around their instruments. The band’s music would sound at home on the soundtrack of a “Let’s go surfing and look at chicks”-type B-movie sex comedy.

Using the intoxicant classification of music categorization system, Aversion Therapy falls under the cheap-beerand-lots-of-it heading.

So, in many ways, they’re an ideal bar band: fun music that’s not challenging, but is entertaining, especially if you’ve had a few drinks.

“For me, a huge plus to the band is how intelligible Evan is when he sings,” says King. “If you can’t follow the lyrics, you won’t get the jokes.”

The band members cite the beloved local group Saddle Tramps as an influence for the idea that live music should be fun entertainment.

Even if you weren’t a rockabilly fan, the Saddle Tramps put on an entertaining enough show to win you over.

“In this day and age, where live music isn’t necessarily at the top of everybody’s agenda, not the first thing everybody thinks about when they’re going out for an evening event, it’s important that whatever we’re doing is more fun and different than sitting at home and playing your MP3s of the songs you already know,” says Humphreys. “It’s got to be more fun to be there than to stay at home.”

The musicians’ aim is not that listeners walk away saying, “that’s one of the best bands I’ve ever seen,” but rather, “that’s one of the best times that I’ve ever had.” Ω

Ana Popovic Band Serbian blues singer and guitarist Ana Popovic was recently nominated for a Blues Music Award in the contemporary blues female artist category, and later this year she will be part of the Experience Hendrix Tour ’14, a concert series celebrating the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix. I know you’ve discussed how the guy should pay for the first few dates. I’ve been dating a pretty fabulous woman for a month, and I’m dipping into my savings to take her out to the sort of restaurants she’s used to.

I earn a decent living in a creative field, but she is in finance and clearly makes far more money than I do. I may have complicated things when, on our third date, she wanted to pick up the check, and I wouldn’t let her.

Is there a smooth way to let her know that I now need her to throw down some dough?

The organ that gets used on the third date isn’t supposed to be the kidney you sold on the black market to pay for dinner.

It’s nice to take a woman out for a special meal from time to time, but the guy who can keep up the weekly wining and dining at restaurants where even the cockroaches speak passable French isn’t the guy you are—and probably isn’t the guy she expects you to be.

Women do look for a man to be ambitious and show potential. But typically, a woman who wants a rich guy not only has calculated her date’s net worth—probably pretty successfully—long before the first date but has also trained herself to identify a fake Rolex at 50 paces and read even the subtlest signs about a man’s income like fiscal tea leaves. So, this woman is probably well aware that if you’re “managing a hedge fund,” it’s just a little money you’re putting aside to replace the dead plants on your balcony.

Also, unless a man’s a spy, a woman doesn’t like him to pretend to be somebody he’s not. This isn’t to say you should have some awkward conversation with this woman about how you really do need her to pay for dinner—or hope she gets the idea when she sees you standing by the on-ramp with a cardboard sign, “Spare $264.50, plus tip?” Instead, just take her to places you can pay for painlessly and wait until you’re in a relationship to talk about money. Though women evolved to look for potential partners to show generosity, you can do that in a symbolic way, simply by treating her to something more affordable—maybe a ticket to a museum and fancy ice cream afterward—and by showing generosity of spirit: fairness, kindness and willingness to do the right thing even when it’s hard. A woman who really likes you will really like you when you’re treating her to the shoe rental at a bowling alley.

Plus, you’ll be more fun when you aren’t worrying about money, and she’ll be more relaxed when she isn’t worrying that you’ll have to file for bankruptcy if she adds shrimp to her Caesar salad. Ω

birthday, I finally figured out that eating dairy products was the cause of my chronic respiratory problems. From that day forward, I avoided foods made from cow’s milk.

My health improved. I kept up this regimen for years. But a month ago, I decided to see if my long-standing taboo still made sense.

Just for the fun of it, I gave myself permission to gorge on a tub of organic vanilla yogurt. To my shock, there was no hell to pay. I was free of snot. In the last few weeks, I have feasted regularly on all the creamy goodies I’ve been missing. I bring this up, Aries, because I suspect an equally momentous shift is possible for you. Some taboo you have honored for a long time, some rule you have obeyed as if it were an axiom, is ripe to be broken.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Psychologist

Daniel Kahneman, who won a Nobel Prize in economics, says that consulting experts may be useless. In his study of Wall Street traders, he found their advice was no better than information obtained by a chimpanzee flipping a coin. Meanwhile, psychologist Philip Tetlock did a 20-year study with similar results. He found that predictions made by political and financial professionals are inferior to wild guesses. So, does this mean you should never trust any experts? No. But it’s important to approach them with extra skepticism right now. The time has come for you to upgrade your trust in your own intuition.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): I’m a big fan

of logic and reason, and I urge you to be, too.

Using your rational mind to understand your experience is a very good thing. The less stock you put in superstitious head trips and fear-based beliefs, the smarter you will be. Having said that, I recommend that you also make playful use of your creative imagination. Relish the comically magical elements of your mysterious fate. It’s really terrible, and almost every girl in Somalia gets that. So that’s one of the things we give to is a clinic that helps repair the damage that’s done after they have a baby, because oftentimes, when they have genital mutilation, their baby dies, and the mama could die. But we can fix it.

We all meet at one of our houses. It’ll be my house for the first one. And we all bring food or a drink, wine or snacks to share.

We socialize for a bit and then we watch a video. Dining for Women is a national organization, so they send me these videos. So we watch the video and learn all about the cause we’re donating to that month. And then we learn about it, talk about, spread awareness, and, most importantly, we donate to it.

I know. It’s so sad. … There’s this quote from Gandhi that I think really captures Dining For Women and that’s “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

I’ve been to places where I’ve seen women and girls treated poorly and not having access to education and their bodies flesh-peddled. And I think we can help that problem. I’ve been to Honduras, Europe, Mexico. I’ve just seen poverty and lack
