This land is my land

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I started a little tempest in a teapot last week when I posted a photo of my new solar panels on Facebook. Here’s slightly abridged version of one of the responses. It’s by my friend Bob Tregilus of the podcast “This Week in Energy” and other green energy groups.

“Because you installed solar, with the intent of zeroing out your electric bill, that shifts all of the utility’s overhead and enormous fixed costs onto other ratepayers. Because you are compensated for the solar you generate at retail rates, on the consumer’s side of the meter, NV Energy lost a customer and someone has to make up the difference.

“However, if we had a feedin tariff program, like we got through the state Senate in 2011, but [which] died in the Assembly, you could have connected your system to the utility’s side of the meter. Then NVE retains you as a customer, and they would have gained a resource, you as a generator.

“Being on the wholesale side of the meter, then, the energy you generated could be used to displace more expensive energies on the grid, in particular, costly sources such as energy from peaker plants which can cost the utility as much as a $1 kWh [kilowatt hour]. So the $0.14 kWh NVE pays you for the solar you generate would be displacing $1 kWh peak energy saving the utility $0.86 kWh, a savings which, theoretically, they would pass on to ratepayers.”

I agree wholeheartedly with Bob. I am now my own utility. I should be able to sell the energy I produce anywhere I want, maybe to those very neighbors Bob is talking about. I should be able to install as many solar panels as I want, without the monopoly being able to prevent it. This is anti-competitive, pro-dirty energy, and anti-American, and it artificially increases rates for everyone, including me, because I paid for the hardware.

This screwed system was bought and paid for by NV Energy. Until Nevada legislators get a dog in the fight—maybe by installing solar modules on state buildings and selling back to the “utility”—we’ll all continue paying more for dirty energy we don’t want.

Re “13 Songs” (Arts & Culture, Jan. 9): It would be nice to have some local music on the list, or at least a separate list for local bands. Dah well. Maybe next year.

Re “A new battle over public lands” (Let Freedom Ring, Jan. 9): Another Nevada “land grab”?

Every paragraph of this opinion piece omits or obscures the facts, and is mainly a thinly-veiled privatization scheme. While most agencies could use a lot of improvement, these lands belong to all the people of the U.S., not just Nevadans. I mean, Nevada has one national park, one of the least-visited; the state’s and counties’ legacy isn’t very good when it comes to sustainability. By having federal oversight, a more diverse workforce and consistent programs are more available than piecemeal “local” control. Federal overseers also include Department of Energy and Department of Defense, and Tribal/BIA lands. The feds granted lands to the railroads in order to promote westward expansion; the railroads used primarily immigrant labor, by the way.

The Tea Party rhetoric about “earmarks” is ironic, in that U.S. Sen. Harry Reid has resisted any effort to collect meaningful revenues from federal mining leases in Nevada. The “shovel brigade” was an ill-conceived grandstanding that ignored the diminishment of the habitat of so-called bull trout, proving that “locals” value driving over fishing. This goes against the “multiple-use, sustained yield” motto of the Forest Service. Renegade ranchers, plinking four-wheelers, rock art thieves, are any of these on states’ rights advocates’ radar? I think not. What this would result in is: coal-fired power plants, water transfers to cities, and continued irresponsible resource extraction. A better approach would be along the lines of the land transfers from Las Vegas Burea of Land Management, which benefit Lake Tahoe, and the Lyon County proposal for an expanded copper mine. But recall this ore has a boomand-bust history, like most so-called “rebellions.”

Re “A new battle over public lands” (Let Freedom Ring, Jan. 9): The terms “reclaim” and “recover” are bandied about like the federal government somehow took the lands from the state of Nevada. The state never owned these lands. The federal government obtained what would become the Territory of Nevada from Mexico in 1848 via the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and by marginalizing the native Americans already living therein. When Nevada became a state in 1864, it was awarded 3.9 million acres of School Grant Lands, and as a condition of statehood, gave up all claims to the remaining unappropriated (federal) lands forever. In 1880, Nevada not being happy with the set formula of the state getting all the lands in sections 16 and 36 across the state, the U.S. Congress allowed the state to exchange those 3.9 million acres of mostly arid, desert land for 2 million acres of the state’s choosing.

Nevada selected the most valuable land, mostly those with water and in the river bottoms, that had not been already been settled by homesteaders and miners. The state then sold off essentially all of these lands, leaving only 3,000 acres of the original 3.9 million acres it received at statehood.

That is how the state of Nevada manages its land.

Cruel service I am disgusted by the uncaring and heartless display of Eldorado HotelCasino Reno Security New Year’s Eve. At 10:30 p.m. my friend and I noticed a bird stuffed into a party hat just inside the doors of the casino.

Upon investigation, I found the pigeon to be alive, but perhaps injured and in discomfort.

I notified two security guards and suggested they call a supervisor, who in turn could call the SPCA or a wildlife recovery agency.

A female supervisor arrived, but to my astonishment, unsympathetically and coldly told the two junior officers to just dump the pigeon outside and don’t bother wasting her time. Another officer even rudely joked to call a man who feeds pigeons to an eagle.

Two junior security guards complied with the supervisor’s barking commands and put the bird on the sidewalk.

I followed alongside, picked up the bird, and carried it to a treed area a few blocks away where I removed a branch which some idiot had stuck in its rectum. After that, the pigeon began to clean itself and began to perk-up. The bird could not obviously remove the large and horrible object by itself.

All it took was a few minutes and a little caring to help save the discomfort—and probably life—of this bird.

It will no-doubt take a lot longer for Eldorado Hotel-Casino security staff to learn more caring skills when it comes to wildlife—maybe humans, too—and not be as heartless as I observed.

These cruel and insensitive employees should be chastised and reprimanded for their disgusting behavior and lack of humanity.

The people of Reno voted overwhelmingly for term limits in 1996.

There is nothing unclear or the least ambiguous about the Reno City Charter where it clearly states the mayor is a member of the City Council. Section 3.010 states that: 1. The Mayor: (a) Shall serve as a member of the City Council and preside over its meetings.

Why media lapdogs on the Left want to say any of this “has flexibility” is beyond me. Eddie Lorton didn’t file suit to “keep some of his prospective opponents—term limited City Council members—from running.” He filed suit so more people could be on the ticket; because the political hacks who are term-limited out would have sucked up all the oxygen and kept the “regular” people from even joining the race.

Too tipos Re “The Bobbit” (Feature story, Jan. 9): After weeks of resisting the urge to jump on the anti-Bob Grimm bandwagon, I’m finally joining the rally. Here we have a man who expects us to value his pompous opinions on film, yet, ironically, in one review (12 Years a Slave), he admits he’ll never be able to spell the leading actor’s name “without looking it up,” then carelessly misspells Carey Mulligan’s name not once, but twice, as Carrie. Please, I beg you, give us someone we can take seriously.

The people’s court Re “Fields of dreams” (News, Jan. 9): This is a complete misrepresentation of Eddie Lorton and the reason he filed suit. It also seems to be a slap in the face to the Nevada Supreme Court. Dennis Myers, the author of all this spin, seems to feel it is “surprising” that the Nevada Supreme Court accepted Lorton’s case. As if there ever was a question of the validity.

This case, stopping career-minded politicians from flagrantly disregarding established—voted on by the people— term limit law, will set national precedent. Myers then follows up with this little gem: “In similar electoral cases, the Nevada Supreme Court has

Stop cheerleading One of the good things about producing our news story this week about Nevada again falling behind in education is that policymakers we spoke with made no excuses.

As you can read on page 8, the annual education survey

by Education Week showed Nevada with poor grades in six out of six categories. It placed last in the nation.

When we spoke with state legislators, they didn’t try to sugar-coat it. They made it clear that Nevada is not just failing but is falling back.

They did not say, “This is a Clark County problem.

Washoe County is doing well.” That’s the argument officials in Washoe County have been making for decades.

It’s time to admit Clark into Nevada.

Nor did they say, “This is stale data.” That is the excuse state officials have used time after time.

So we were disappointed when the Reno GazetteJournal interviewed Washoe school superintendent Pedro Martinez, and he used both of these arguments. Though no direct quote was used, the newspaper reported Martinez said the Education Week survey “is based on old data. … on 2012 graduation rates and test scores.”

Let’s set aside the fact that 2014 was only 13 days old when that RG-J article was published and that 2012 isn’t exactly when Columbus sailed. Last week, we noticed different year dates in the report, and we inquired at Education Week about methodology.

The annual survey from the publication is anxiously awaited each year in part because it is an ongoing survey.

That is, it tracks trends, not just the information of the moment. It’s a film, not a snapshot, so data overlaps from year to year. Each year half the categories are updated.

I think it’s great. I’ve always been a proponent of it. When I was living in California, I met people that it really helped. And even recreationally, I don’t see any problem with it.

school finance data categories have the most current data available. The standards and accountability, transitions and alignments, and teaching professions data are carried over from the last report. Next time the last three will presumably be updated.

This isn’t stale data. Nevada operates on a two-year budget system. The new budget approved by the lawmakers in June hardly had enough time to have any impact on this survey.

The Gazette-Journal also reported, “Martinez said the only F on the report given to Nevada is in funding.” This is a reference to a subcategory of school finance. School finance is broken down into equity and level of spending, and Nevada received an F on the spending level. But that wasn’t the only F. Under the kindergarten-12th grade achievement category, Nevada received an F for the current status of student achievement. But even if Mr. Martinez were correct, and Nevada had received “only” one F, what kind of school superintendent brags about such a thing?

The trend line in the Education Week report is clear, and claiming stale data is just an excuse. Fortunately, Superintendent Martinez administers, he doesn’t set policy.

But he should know that in a state with dozens of poor national rankings, a happy face on bad news is a mistake.

If there’s one thing this state does not need from officialdom, it is more cheerleading. For a half-century an upbeat spin has substituted for actual achievement in this state, not just in education but in mental health, economic development, tax equity, and dozens of other fields. How urgent can things be if a survey placing Nevada last in the nation is sugar-coated? The state needs harsh talk. Ω

So long, old friend It’s a shame they don’t make legislators like Bernie Anderson anymore.

Assemblyman Anderson died suddenly last week, after a short stay in the hospital, stunning his many friends in the political world, both Republican and Democratic.

As people reminisced on social by media, describing his political courSheila Leslie age and leadership idiosyncrasies, there were certain words that emerged time and again. Teacher. Mentor.

Loyal friend.

Anderson served as the chairman of the Assembly Judiciary Committee for 14 years, a position many lawyers questioned given his lack of a law degree. He overcame these objections by simple dedication, reading and studying every bill that came to his “hardest working committee” carefully and completely.

In Anderson’s legislative years, pre-term limits, freshmen were almost never assigned to Ways and Means, leaving just Government Affairs and Judiciary as morning committee assignments. Assembly speakers often assigned their brightest and their

weakest members to Anderson’s care, knowing he would teach them the legislative process in great detail and allow each member an opportunity to shine.

He was a tough chairman, a stickler for all the rules. When an unknowing freshman would take off his suit coat during a long meeting in an overheated room, testimony would cease while Anderson instructed the committee this was not permitted without permission (just ask Regent Jason Geddes). New legislators learned quickly not to ask a question out of turn or without following the protocol for a follow-up.

Anderson was equally strict with lobbyists who violated his committee rules. He had a clock that buzzed loudly when the allotted testimony time was breached and was known to cut someone off mid-sentence. And God forbid a cell phone would ring in the committee room. The offending party usually would scurry out of the room before being publicly banished.

The chairman was strict, but he was fair. He was meticulous about

scheduling, maintaining a full-size mobile chalkboard in his office where each bill received a line, detailing hearing dates and progress through the committee. He set a compassionate tone during hearings that generated great emotion, such as the death penalty, domestic violence and child abuse.

Despite his gruff performance in committee, Anderson had a much softer side, especially when it came to children. As a teacher of some 30 years, he knew how to talk to young people, and he cared deeply about education at all levels. He knew every colleague’s family situation and never failed to ask first about family before getting down to business.

Anderson always had time to mentor others and would randomly summon a freshman from either party to his office to check on the progress of a bill or a problem. He did this more often with legislators in his own party, building relationships and friendships that sustained the caucus during the frustrating, dark days any legislative session produces.

Despite his groundbreaking work on issues such as the death penalty, drug courts and crime, he wasn’t featured in the media as often as he deserved because he found it impossible to express his opinion in a sound bite. As a born teacher, he believed every question deserved a full answer and that answer might take him 30 minutes to fully express, far too long for a busy reporter to endure.

Deeply Catholic, Anderson was a role model in regard to representing constituents without losing his personal moral compass. He campaigned fearlessly against the death penalty, but he was a staunch advocate for women having the right of reproductive choice, understanding his religious views shouldn’t trump individual freedom.

Anderson leaves behind a loyal and talented trio of women, his wife, Clyda, and daughters, Cairn and Natha.

Nevada owes them a great debt for sharing Bernie Anderson with us, enabling him to set the highest standard for legislative service. Ω

A viewing and vigil for Assemblyman Anderson will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sparks, followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

In praise of the Second Amendment The 2008 U.S. Supreme Court decision in District of Columbia v. Heller ended the long debate over the meaning of the Second Amendment. The court declared the right to keep and bear arms was an individual right, based on the inherent right of self-defense.

Along with the Heller decision by Brendan Trainor came the dramatic rise in concealed carry permits in states with a “shall issue” law. A shall issue law requires the state to issue the permit to carry a concealed weapon with some minimal requirements such as a gun safety course, barring something serious on your record. In Nevada more than 56,000 concealed carry permits have been issued.

Nevada is also an open carry state. Political rallies often feature citizens openly carrying pistols and rifles. Sometimes a congressman or state representatives is there, without an entourage of heavily armed bodyguards, but rather feeling secure in the presence of an armed citizenry. That is what a Republic should look like!

The latest studies confirm that contrary to opponents’ predictions, crime is lower in states that allow shall issue concealed carry. The new police chief of chaotic Detroit recently said he believes that an armed citizenry is important for public safety, and that crime has dropped by 7 percent even without a well functioning police presence because citizens can legally pack heat to defend their homes.

Contrast this with the increase in unjustified violence committed by the police. SWAT teams are now present in almost every jurisdiction.

While so far minimally used in Northern and rural Nevada, in many places SWAT teams are used for too many routine procedures, such as serving drug warrants and even enforcing code violations. SWAT team raids often lead to escalated violence and the deaths of innocent civilians.

The militarization of the police is extremely worrisome. Police departments often accept military surplus gear from the Department

of Defense including armed personnel carriers and other heavy equipment. Shootings of family pets by heavily armed police and the gratuitous use of Tazers and mace is commonplace. This militarization of the police has inspired a rare Third Amendment lawsuit in Henderson. Police commandeered a home for a stakeout, disrupting the family. Is the Third Amendment about more than simply quartering British soldiers? The quartered troops enforced the king’s general warrants. Is that similar to the militarized police we have today?

Las Vegas citizens are in a state of fear of their police. Las Vegas Metro has a very poor civil rights record. Las Vegas is the only entity in Nevada that requires gun registration. But while citizens are required to register their guns, the Las Vegas Metro police are often accused of using their weapons without justification. The number of police shootings and other misconduct is higher in Las Vegas than in any other jurisdictions except

Recently, Jesus Arevalo became the first Las Vegas police officer to be fired for killing an unarmed man.

The victim was a Gulf War veteran with PTSD who did not obey a police order fast enough. Today’s activists no longer rely on the outdated tactic of “Civilian Review Boards” to check the police.

Increasingly, social media sites like Nevada Cop Block, http://nvcopblock.org, monitor the police. Citizens use cell phone cameras to record police stops and arrests. Police sometimes harass those who record them, but interference with the public’s right to record their actions has been rebuffed in the courts. Libertarians are unlike law-and-order conservatives in that we do not believe that a badge and a uniform confer special privileges. We need to curb police abuse with powerful new social media technologies. Ω

Another municipality has blocked medical dispensaries for marijuana by adopting a “moratorium.”

On Jan. 7, the Henderson City Council voted to direct its staffers to reject business license, building permit, or land use applications for dispensaries in the next six months. Henderson is Nevada’s second largest community. State voters approved medical marijuana use 13 years ago, a policy choice that was stymied for more than a decade by the Nevada Legislature’s failure to provide for methods patients could obtain the substance.

When the legislators finally acted, local governments became the problem.

Las Vegas has taken a similar stance to Henderson, while Clark County is moving ahead with dispensaries (“Taking their time,” RN&R, Jan. 2).

Essay describes Paul activism Salon last week published a short essay by a Reno man, Edwin Lyngar, on his experiences in the 2008 Washoe Republican convention as a supporter of libertarian Ron Paul. Titled “Why I fled libertarianism—and became a liberal,” the essay wrote of his discomfort with libertarianism in practical action.

“I came by my own libertarian sensibilities honestly,” he wrote. “I grew up in a mining town that produced gold, silver and copper; but above all, Battle Mountain, Nev., made libertarians.

Raised on 40-acre square of brown sagebrush and dead earth, we burned our own garbage and fired guns in the back yard.”

“Many members of the [Paul] group were obsessed with the gold standard, the Kennedy assassination and the Fed. Although Libertarians believe government is incompetent, many of them subscribe to the most fringe conspiracy theories imaginable. Airplanes are poisoning America with chemicals (chemtrails) or the moon landings were faked. Nothing was too far out. A great many of them really think that 9-11 was an inside job. Even while basking in the electoral mainstream, the movement was overflowing with obvious hokum. During the meeting, a Ron Paul staffer, a smart and charismatic young woman, gave a tip to the group for the upcoming convention. ‘Dress normal,’ she said. ‘Wear suits, and don’t bring signs or flags. Don’t talk about conspiracy theories.

Just fit in.’ Her advice was the kind you might hear given to an insane uncle at Thanksgiving. …

“Yet I don’t want to gloss over the good things about libertarians. They are generally supportive of the gay community, completely behind marijuana legalization and are often against ill-considered foreign wars, but a few good ideas don’t make up for some spectacularly bad ones. ... The Ron Paul delegates were able to take over the Nevada convention in 2008, howling, screeching and grinding it to a painful halt. I was part of the mob, and once we took over, we were unable to get anything done.”

He said he found that most libertarians involved were the working poor working against their own interests. “They were contortionists, justifying the excesses of the capitalist elite, despite being victims if libertarian politics succeed. If you think that selfishness and cruelty are fantastic personal traits, you might be a libertarian. In the movement no one will ever call you an asshole, but rather, say you believe in radical individualism.”

Within hours after his posting, Libertarian commentators around the nation began trashing Lyngar. Basically, they seemed to feel that his experience with real life application of libertarianism to politics should not discredit libertarianism in its pure, doctrinal form.

One wrote, “If Lyngar truly were a libertarian … he would have probably found that individual liberty could help the poor as opposed to well-intentioned, but doomed-to-failure government programs.” Another wrote, “Lyngar’s error is in assuming that because libertarians are tolerant of people with different beliefs, that those beliefs are characteristic of libertarianism. Not so.

Just because some libertarians are conspiracy theorists does not imply most are. The same is true for religion, or atheism.

Some libertarians are evangelical Christians, and some are rabid atheists.”

Nevadans held back Looking for opportunity? Studies say it’s better to look elsewhere.

Nevada often suffers from comparison rankings of quality of life factors among the states. Two recent surveys go by further, suggesting that Nevada is Dennis Myers not a good place to get ahead in life.

A month ago, a report by researchers in Brooklyn and Boston ranked Nevada dead last in providing opportunity to its residents and businesspeople (“Opportunity doesn’t knock,” RN&R, Dec. 19). Last week, that message was reinforced by a report in Education Week ranking Nevada in the bottom half of states in educating its elementary and secondary school students, and dead last in positioning those same students for success.

“We need a bigger conversation.”

Sen. Debbie Smith Washoe County Democrat Education Week, founded in 1959 as the Chronicle of Higher Education, has covered the elementary and secondary schools beat since 1966. It is published by a Maryland firm. Three editions each year provide special reports, on technology in the schools, graduation success, and the quality of education.

Its Jan. 9 edition contained its annual “Quality Counts” survey on the quality of education in

each of the United States. Nevada received poor grades in six out of six categories.

The publication declined to release full cumulative state rankings, so comparing Nevada to other states overall is difficult. Education Week researcher Sterling Lloyd told us, “Due to delays stemming from the recent federal government shutdown, data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey had not been released by our publication deadline for the print edition of the report.” Thus the “chances for success” indicator was still being updated online, and so cumulative state scores could not be provided. The publication did provide state rankings within the six categories: • In the “Chance for Success Index,” Nevada received a D grade, placing 51 in the nation, meaning it has dropped eight places since 2007, when it placed 43. The average for all states is C-plus.

• In kindergarten through 12th grade achievement, Nevada received a D-plus, placing 36. The average state grade is C-minus.

• In school finance analysis, Nevada received a D, placing 48 in the nation. The average state grade is a D. • In transitions and alignments (how well the school system helps students cope with moving from

one school stage to another), Nevada received a C, placing 36.

Its ranking compared to the average showing by states of B-minus.

• In standards, assessments and accountability, Nevada received a C, placing 45 in the nation. The average among states is a B. • And in grading the teaching profession within Nevada, the publication gave the state a C-minus, which ranked it 28, its highest showing. The average of other states is a C. All of Nevada’s rankings are in the lower half of the states.

The “chance for success” ranking, which comes on the heels of the “lack of opportunity” finding for Nevada, is troubling to some state officials.

School funding Washoe County Sen. Debbie Smith of Sparks, who chairs the Senate budget committee and sits on its taxation committee, pointed out that Education Week has “had us ranked poorly for a while,” suggesting that things can’t be solved quickly.

“It’s very much about our ability to fund preschool, full day kindergarten,” she said. “We have an extreme number of children living in poverty. I’m more worried about that every day. I think last [legislative] session we continued to hear people say we need to better fund education.

And it’s not just about education.

We have health needs, infrastructure needs, cultural needs, mental health, economic development. We need a bigger conversation.”

The index is based on 14 indicators in each state. They are family income (number of children in families with incomes of at least 200 percent of the federal poverty level), parent education level (number of children with at least one parent with a college degree), parental employment (number of children with at least one parent employed), English speaking in the family (children whose parents speak English well), preschool enrollment levels, kindergarten enrollment levels, fourth grade reading levels, eighth grade math proficiency, high school graduation levels, young adult college levels, adult college graduation rate, adult income (number of adult workers with incomes above the national level), and employment (number of adults in full time, year round jobs).

of Nevada’s placement among the states in the “chance for success” category: “Massachusetts remains at the top of the national rankings for the seventh year running, earning the only A-minus, followed closely

by Connecticut, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and North Dakota, each posting grades of B-plus. Mississippi and New Mexico receive grades of D-plus, while Nevada scores lowest with a D.” On school finance systems, there was no discernible pattern.

Small Western states did extremely well, and very poorly: “For the sixth year in a row, Wyoming ranks first and posts an A-minus.

The states claiming the next three slots—West Virginia, New York and Connecticut—earn grades of B-plus.

At the other end of the rankings, Mississippi, Nevada, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Utah receive grades of D, and Idaho scores lowest with a D-minus.”

There has been some criticism of the publication’s methodology in adjudging the states’ chance for success climate. Another education publication, EducationNext, noted in 2010 that the “Quality Counts” rankings are eagerly awaited each year and so urged that they be made as reliable as possible by narrowing the indices used and also justifying those indices better.

“Not all of these have a clear relationship to post-secondary

success, and several are beyond the control of state policymakers,” wrote Margaret Raymond of the Hoover Institution at Stanford in the publication’s analysis of the success index.

Raymond and her team were critical of the failure to explain the linkage between some of the indices and success.

“ Nevada scores lowest with a D.” Education Week “Nowhere do the Quality Counts editors show how or why the Chance-for-Success Index is a good predictor of success. Instead, they provide statistics that divert attention away from the things that actually do matter, such as highquality teaching, a good range of school options, and success in early elementary schools.”

They recommended that Education Week use indicators that are more directly related to education and fewer to family income and employment factors. Going further, Raymond and team ran calculations that narrowed Education Week’s 14 indicators to preschool enrollment, kindergarten enrollment, 4th grade reading, 8th grade mathematics, and high school graduation. Nevada dropped from its 2010 ranking of 50 to 51 under that calculation. Ω

It removed about 15 acres from the rezoned land including some historic mining buildings and land closest to residential homes. Keller had not responded by press deadline.

“The compromise was made between Ms. Keller, who lives in Silver Springs, and CMI,” Dallas said. “It was not made with any input whatsoever from Silver City. And so then they had input from 60 or 70 people [at the meeting] and some discussion from the board before they voted, and that’s pretty much it. They got their changes.”

Dallas and Elston believe Keller may have compromised integrity as well, mainly because of her husband’s involvement with a non-profit that has received funding from CMI and because of previous actions.

Both also mentioned that Hastings’ campaign donations show he may be biased towards CMI, too. CMI donated to Hastings’ campaign three times in 2012, totaling $10,000. Intergroup Corp., Santa Fe Financial Corp. and Portsmouth Square Inc. also donated a total of $7,500 the same year. John V. Winfield, CMI director and chairman of the board, is the chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of each of these companies.

“How can you depend on your commissioners anymore?” Elston said. “Who’s going to look after you? Money talks, I guess, and the rest of us walk.”

Hastings said the donations didn’t play a role in his decision because he “made it clear from day one” that he would do what he thinks is right for the county. He also said CMI did not ask him to vote in a certain way.

He said he believes this is a property rights issue and voted as such.

“They own the property,” Hastings said. “Where they’re at, there are patented mining claims that go back to the 1870s, which means they have the right to mine there. I think the county made a mistake in the past by putting zoning over the top of that.”

Another point of concern to many in this decision is that the planning For more information commission voted against CMI’s requests. Some Silver City residents are also concerned for how the community may be affected by these changes. At this time, CMI states they do not have plans for the area. But with a special use permit, these changes would allow for the company to begin mining in the area.

“This is really, really bad news for us all, I think,” Elston said. “If it makes it bad enough where people have to leave … it will change and then what will happen after CMI is gone? Will it be left a shell like it was when many of us moved in here in the late ’60s? ... There wasn’t any community.

We built that over the years, and I’m afraid that will all be destroyed.” Ω OPINION

Not surprisingly, this is the biggest category of them all in 2014, and probably will remain the biggest yearly cinematic genre until the final movie screen burns down during the alien insect apocalypse.

Hollywood loves franchises.

Mercifully, Peter Jackson’s scorching of the Shire will come to an end with The Hobbit: There and Back Again (December).

The first two movies were pretty bad, and the second took the series to a point where I was bored out of my mind. To me, this series is going down as a lifetime moviegoing disappointment, and that’s from a guy who worshipped Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Big blockbuster franchises continue with the likes of Transformers: Age of Extinction,

you, the fearless reader, a sampling of things to come in the next 12 months. There are a lot of movies coming your way, and I couldn’t fit every announced film into this story. Get off my back, will ya!

Rather than break it down by month, which would just be too easy, I am going to go by category. Keep in mind that all of the titles mentioned are subject to changed release dates or studio heads vomiting upon seeing them, sending their cinematic asses straight to video.

SuperheroeS After the colossal success of Marvel’s The Avengers, Columbia Pictures looks to do a similar thing with Spidey and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. There are lots and lots of villains battling with the webbed avenger in this one, which brings to mind the overly loaded Sam Raimi-helmed Spider-Man 3.

Both cinematic X-Men universes come together in the time traveling X-Men: Days of Future Past, which will give us young and old versions of the superheroes. (Hugh Jackman’s semi-ageless Wolverine occupies both sides of the story.) Both versions of Magneto, played

by Michael Fassbender and Ian McKellen, will be present. Sweet.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier comes with Robert Redford in tow, and Guardians of the Galaxy, which had a little teaser trailer in the latest Thor movie, will deal with some of the weirder characters in the Marvel universe.

Director Christopher Nolan returns with Interstellar, a movie shrouded in secrecy, but we know it has McConaughey and wormholes.

Angelina Jolie will star as the title character in Maleficent, where the Sleeping Beauty baddie gets her own movie. Jolie creeps me out already, so I expect this one to give me nightmares. Hubby Brad Pitt stars in a currently untitled WWII tank drama written and directed by David Ayer.

In what is sure to make some of his haters happy, Tom Cruise dies repeatedly in Doug Liman’s big budget alien war epic.

Directors Andy and Lana Wachowski return in what looks like something akin to an intergalactic Snow White minus the dwarves in Jupiter Ascending, starring Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum.

If none of the above stoke your movie furnace, take heed, for we will also be witnessing the rebirth of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Hercules starring Dwayne Johnson.

Finally, this year marks the second reboot of Godzilla. Please, Gareth Edwards, make a movie that wipes out the memory of the

Roland Emmerich disaster that I somehow managed to give an OK review to back in the day. I’m so horribly ashamed about that particular endorsement. So … very … ashamed.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will follow up their 2013 directorial debut triumph This is the End with The Interview, which reunites James Franco with Rogen in a film about a North Korean assassination plot. Rogen will also star with Franco’s brother, Dave, and Zac Efron in Neighbors, which has the funniest preview trailer I’ve seen this year.

Seth McFarlane follows up his Ted with A Million Ways to Die in the West, a Western satire in which he stars with Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Neil Patrick Harris and Sarah Silverman. Iron Man duo Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. reunite in the Favreaudirected Chef, about a disgraced chef starting a food truck.

AwArd ContenderS And drAMAS Director Paul Thomas Anderson will be delivering Inherent Vice, based on a Thomas Pynchon novel about a detective investigating the disappearance of a past girlfriend. It stars Joaquin Phoenix, Jena Malone and Reese

Unbroken brings the interesting combo of Angelina Jolie directing a World War II drama with a script co-written by the Coen brothers. Gone Girl, the next film from director David Fincher, co-stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike in a movie about a woman’s disappearance on her wedding anniversary.

Star-studded casts make up two musicals. Clint Eastwood directs Christopher Walken in Jersey Boys, a musical based on Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. There’s also Into the Woods, starring Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Chris Pine in a modern take on Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and more.

Two 2013 holdovers would be George Clooney’s WWII drama The Monuments Men starring Matt Damon, which lost its 2013 awards consideration slot due to “editing difficulties.” There’s also Grace of Monaco, starring Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly. This one got mysteriously rescheduled after Naomi Watts bombed in Diana, another princess story. Director Terrence Malick attempts to rebound from his first bad movie, To the Wonder, with Knight of Cups, starring Christian Bale and Natalie Portman.

I expect that many more smaller and independent dramas will come onto the radar as the year progresses.

In a rather disturbing trend, there are a bunch of ‘80s remakes that look less than promising. Robocop (with Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson), Endless Love, Poltergeist (with Sam Rockwell ... OK, that could work), About Last Night, Annie and TV show The Equalizer (with Denzel Washington) are all getting shiny new films.

So, as a super geek, the one film that has me excited beyond belief would be the aforementioned Godzilla. As for the more cerebral movies, I hope there are some surprises in store, because the current slate looks slightly insubstantial. We need more.

As of this time next year, we will have said “Buh-bye!” to Peter Jackson’s Hobbit movies. I’m feeling a sense of relief well in advance. Please, Mr. Jackson, please make me look like a pigheaded critic who doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and finish the series with a movie that cancels out the previous two mistakes. I crave a good Hobbit film. I feel it would have massive fortifying powers, and restore my faith in Tolkien films. Make it so! Ω

that time of year when getting toasty, in more ways than one, always sounds like a good idea. And we’re here to point you in the right direction, with our mug-free hand, of course.

Focusing on six local breweries in and around the Reno area, we’ve scoured the market to bring you some winter seasonal beers currently available to down (or sip, if you’re a lady). But you have to tap the kegs while you can—as the name implies, these seasonal beers are only available for a limited time.

Brewer’s Cabinet The Brewer’s Cabinet, on the corner of Arlington and California Avenues, has less than two years under its belt, and it’s come a long way in its local beer production. When they first announced themselves, the modestly sized brewery—which is housed entirely in the upstairs corridor of the building—had only a couple of personally brewed beers on tap. As of the beginning of this year, their personal beer selection has outgrown its brewers’ britches. A look at the menu boasts an offering of 10 housemade beers, and the demand is so strong that it’s led to the decision to cut out the guest list.

“Every Monday I print out our sales report, and I see how much of

what has sold, and [the guest beers] are always at the bottom,” says Charlie Johnson, Head Brewer at the Brewer’s Cabinet. “People like to drink the beer they know is made 10 feet above their head, I think they enjoy the fact they can sit down and actually have a conversation with the person who’s making what they’re drinking.”

Right now the seasonal selections on tap include such winter offerings as Dog Sled, an 8.4 percent alcohol milk stout with a flavor profile typical of a winter beer—slightly sweet, it’s brewed with cocoa nibs offering a hint of chocolate layered with a light roasted flavor.

“When I think of the winter time I think of a little higher alcohol beers,” Johnson says of a traditional winter beer. “It’s cooler [outside] so

you want to be a little warmed up.

They’re heavier, darker in color, and bolder flavors typically.”

For the atypical winter beer drinker, there’s the Espiritu de Noel, lighter in alcohol—only 4.1 percent.

It’s a persimmon apple spiced sour ale, aged in pinot grigio barrels with a hint of Vietnamese cinnamon.

“I try to [connect the] flavors I want in beers to memories I had of winter. There’s candy canes and chocolate, so you have a chocolate stout and a peppermint porter [also a seasonal option currently on tap], or there’s mulled ciders—so we’re trying to bring that out in the persimmon sour.”

High Sierra Brewing While this brewery may be a little off the beaten path, its brews are accessibly carried at various retailers and in bars around Reno—Craft, 1864 Tavern and Blind Onion to name a few. High Sierra Brewing Company in Carson City has been open since 2010, having just celebrated their three-year anniversary on Christmas. On top of six year-round beers on tap, the brew masters—brothers Jeff and Paul Young—always try to keep a seasonal beer on rotation as well—to keep things interesting for their customers. Currently, that “interesting” option is their Harvest Ale. “[For the Harvest Ale], we took a traditional pale ale and turned up

the alcohol volume to 7 percent,” says Paul Young. “We and used rye wheat and local honey to accomplish a malty spice flavor. It’s not a crazy spice, we just wanted it so that as it goes over your tongue it starts citrusy, then goes spicy, and ends really clean … that was the goal.”

Silver Peak

Brasserie St. James Over at Brasserie St. James on Center Street, beer drinkers can deep in the flavors of the season with their Quadrophobia—a 10 percent alcohol Belgium dark ale.

With notes of toffee and caramel on the start, and finishing with flavors of dark fruit, bread and spice, bar manager Steve Widmer describes it as the brewery’s own take on the traditional style.

“It’s a nice sweeter beer, and we brew it for the winter time because with its coffee and the caramel flavors, people seem to enjoy those more during the cold season,” says Widmer.

Under the Rose Brewing Company Husband and wife owners Scott Emond and Jesse Kleinedler have fast learned the demand for seasonal beers since opening their brewery on East Fourth Street last summer. With their modest tap featuring just two year-round staples, the slightly ADD tendencies of their craft beer customer hit them right from the initial tapping.

“We have four fermenters—it’s a small set-up, and from day one people go, ‘OK, I’ve had your blonde, I’ve had your saison—what else?” says Emond.

Under the Rose has adapted two seasonal taps, currently playing host to a British and porter beer. Their British beer features an aroma of citrus and green apple, with the flavors of sweet malt and slight hop rounding it out.

“We wanted to take the traditional British beer, which has a nice minerality to it and a really good biscuit character, and transform it into a holiday beer,” Edmond explains, of their brewing technique, which aims at recreating the likes of seasonal apple pie.

As for the porter, the traditional winter beer is described as having a “biscuity and bready mild roastiness,” with flavors of “dark chocolate and deep mahogany.”

The Silver Peal Brewery on Wonder Street consistently keeps a seasonal offering on tap—sometimes even pushing past the months for which they were intended, if demand calls for it. That explains why at the beginning of January, their Pumpkin Ale, which Head Brewer Joe Lenzi says is Silver Peak’s top seasonal, is still ripening on the tap.

As for their actual winter selection—a collaboration beer between Brewer’s Cabinet and Silver Peak, known as the Envious Stout, is also available. Aged in bourbon barrels, the 8.5 percent alcohol stout features the full-bodied flavors of vanilla, caramel and chocolate.

The collaboration beer is not only good for warming up its drinkers, but it’s worked to warm relationships for the brotherly breweries.

“We thought it would be fun to do a collaboration beer and make it more of a family type of thing as far as the breweries in town go,” says Lenzi. “We wanted to pull away from being competitors and show we can work together to make craft beer better for the town.”

Great Basin Brewing Co. Celebrating not only the beginning of a new year in their customers’ lives, but also the escape of the end of times, Great Basin (located on South Virginia Street in Reno and Victorian Avenue in Sparks) welcomes a new version of 2012’s Mayan End of the World brew: Mayan Maybe Not. “It features ingredients that would have been cultivated by the Mayan civilization—so we have chocolate and cocoa nibs, vanilla, three types of chili peppers, and corn, as well as honey and molasses,” says Cameron Kelly, Brewery Manager at the Reno Great Basin. “It’s a sweeter beer with smoked malt, to add to the world-is-burning idea.” Ω

In the Beginning: A Potentialist Ballet In the beginning, the Earth was created by a collision of light, sound and organic matter—the by essences of which are captured in the Ashley Potentialist Workshop’s latest production, Hennefer In the Beginning: A Potentialist Ballet.

According to workshop co-founders Aric Shapiro and Pan Pantoja, despite the variation of creation beliefs among religions, the inception of the world is one of the most beautiful creation stories worth exploring.

Keeping the show to around an hour was important to Pantoja. “I don’t like going over an hour,” he says. “I don’t think the modern audience wants to sit through that.”

While the Potentialist Workshop has only been around for a few months (“Live

up to it,” Sept. 12, 2013), they’ve set an ambitious goal of producing a show every six to eight weeks. So far, they’ve succeeded. In the Beginning, which opens on Jan. 16, took seven weeks from inception to opening performance.

Pantoja was given the music for the show about five years ago by local musician XTeViON (of the sCHIZoPOLITANs), and after several years, saw an opportunity to put it to good use. While the concept of creating a moving painting came after, Pantoja says the music already had essences of the elements—passages that evoke fluidity of water, or stability of metal.

From this concept, Pantoja wrote the show, and artist Kelsey Sweet was brought on board as a co-producer—her first time producing a show, Sweet says. Sweet has a background in painting and sculpture, and has only recently explored performance art.

Creative community projects are also the focus of her in-progress master’s degree.

illusion of colors moving and floating independently. It’s a resource-intensive endeavor. Shapiro says that Potentialist shows must “recycle a lot of regular materials,” which usually results in having “a lot more materials to recycle.” Pantoja and Shapiro note that they weren’t even sure if their vision was possible, but set out to experiment with light and materials until they came up with a performance that worked. The audience will be plunged into darkness for the entirety of the show to make the colors appear vividly.

Most Potentialist projects are selffunded by Shapiro and Pantoja. A chance encounter with a cowboy on Thanksgiving led to the sale of one of Pantoja’s paintings,

which helped fund the show. Both Shapiro and Pantoja want to demonstrate that it’s possible to make a living as artists, and are in the process of turning their community arts organization Reno Art Works into a non-profit.

The production has a small ensemble of dancers and actors, including Shapiro. Shapiro says his Akido training and masseuse experience played a part in learning how to navigate a puppet.

Pantoja likens the show to a “nature documentary”—if the story of creation “was made in Reno, and made in neon.”

Shapiro agrees that the show is unconventional, but that’s what “makes it worth seeing.” He and Sweet remarked that, although black light performance art isn’t a new concept, it’s never been explored quite like this.

“Things are weird when they’re new,” says Shapiro. He pauses for a brief moment. “I like that quote. ‘Things are weird when they’re new.’” Ω

Renovated from serving auto bodies to warm bodies, this eatery sits in front of Reno Homebrewer.

The restaurant seats about 40 folks and will have a nice patio when the weather turns. Simple tables and an eating bar made from reused wood and wine barrel slats give it that “industrial neighborhood” feel, and then, the classy touch, linen napkins.

“My idea was to have a neighborhood restaurant with fair prices and good, memorable food,” Kathleen told me.

The straightforward modest menus have originality and some industrial-type culinary spark. Chef Fred Greenspan has two decades wielding a skillet, including a brief stint, in his early career, as an apprentice at the Waldorf Astoria kitchens in New York City.

There are eight items on the breakfast list ($4.99-$7.95) and Vaneli’s handcrafted coffees. This small company, out of Rocklin, Calif., is quickly building a reputation as a small-batch, custom roastery specializing in a labor-intensive method to make unique coffee and espresso blends from beans sourced from worldwide growers. Nothing is better than a great cup of coffee with a good meal, and this java is exceptional.

Oxbow eggs Benedict ($7.95) was up first. What stood out was the morethan-a-Hollandaise sauce atop the two eggs. This had a velvety texture with a savory finish in a rich creamy-buttery glaze—it will get your attention. The chef’s home fries are generous and have a crisp, hearty/savory outside texture not too salty or greasy.

Soup ($3.95- $5.95) is always good at this time of year, and three were offered. The vegetarian French onion had a savory broth with plenty of caramelized onions and toasted Provolone capping a generous serving.

The clam chowder was creamy, with nice fresh clam meat and not too many potatoes. I could have made a meal of it. The third soup was a chicken vegetable with generous pieces of white meat and fresh veggies in a hearty, almost buttery stock.

The lunch and dinner menus are one ($7.95-$14.95), with dinner items served after 5 p.m. Meal-in-itself appetizers ($8.95-$9.95), wings ($9.95) and big salads ($4.95-$6.96) are offered.

I focused on lunch, and the Reuben ($8.95) was my first nosh. Thinly sliced fresh corned beef on a marbled rye piping hot under the slab of melted Swiss cheese and a homemade coleslaw that was tangy and savory—and they didn’t forget the pickles. It was also served with fresh-made-daily homemade chips—not at all greasy, crispy perfection in every bite.

The hefty barbecue bacon cheddar burger ($8.95) with fries had a sweetsmokey-tangy sauce that worked with the cheese and didn’t overwhelm the meat. There’s also flat bread pizzas ($7.95-$8.95); four beers on tap and eight bottled-beer selections.

There’s a very small, simple wine list ($5-$8), but a start, and all available by-the-glass.

I selected the Adobe Redline ($8) blend, a Sonoma County red wine, 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon/35 percent Zinfandel/5 percent Syrah.

A combination of brawn and stealth, this dark cherry bomb explodes on the tongue. Blueberry tones and blackberry jams combine with flavors of rose petals, dark chocolate and vanilla extract—great with the sandwiches.

This place is a nice fit in the artsycrafty environment where it’s located, and the idea of keeping it simple and sculpting food created to complement and support the neighborhood can became a work of art. Ω

Lone Survivor Lone Survivor, an explosive passion project from writerdirector Peter Berg, takes an unrelentingly gruesome look at Operation Red Wings, the failed 2005 Afghanistan mission that claimed the lives of 19 American soldiers.

As autopsies and first-hand witness accounts have revealed, 16 soldiers died when a Taliban RPG struck their helicopter and sent by them crashing into cliffs. Three of the deaths Bob Grimm were Navy SEALs killed by bullets and the rugged countryside tearing them apart. bgrimm@ newsreview.c om Most of the movie centers on the four Navy SEALs dropped into hostile territory, and how an unfortunate civilian encounter and communications problems led to a massive gun battle of insurmountable odds.

In a performance that stands among his best, Mark Wahlberg plays Marcus Luttrell, the Navy SEAL who co-wrote the book this movie is based upon (the real Luttrell actually has a cameo early in the film, and acted as a consultant). Luttrell, along with Navy SEALs Michael Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch) and Matt Axelson (Ben Foster), were performing reconnaissance for a mission meant to capture or kill a notorious Taliban leader when a trio of goat herders stumbled upon their camp.

In a powerfully acted scene, the four men debate whether or not they should let these prisoners go or “terminate the compromise.”

Their decision ultimately leads to a skirmish wherein they are far outnumbered.

This is where Berg and his stunt and effects crew really go to work. Aided in part by Greg Nicotero, who does the makeup effects for The Walking Dead, Berg shows injury after injury as a true horror show. When the actors take hits in this movie, Berg and the performers make it all look and sound very real and extremely painful.

This is especially true during two sequences where the SEALs must evade bullets by jumping off cliffs. These plummets feature stuntmen crashing into rocks and trees with a ferocity that looks positively deadly.

Berg injects edits of the actual actors falling as well, making the progression down the cliff seamless.

There’s a story circulating, told by both Wahlberg and Berg, that the first stuntman to leap off a cliff for Lone Survivor broke a bunch of ribs, punctured his lung, and had to be airlifted off the set. When you actually see how jarringly realistic this movie is in its depiction of the tortures these men went through, you’ll be shocked the stunt guy’s injuries weren’t worse.

The last act of the film depicts how some sympathetic Afghani villagers found one of the SEALs and sheltered him from Taliban forces until Americans arrived. Don’t think this part of the film represents anything near relief, because the SEAL endures plenty of pain and near death episodes during this stretch, as well.

This is one of the best acting ensembles of 2013.

Wahlberg leads the group with solid, reliable fury sprinkled with the occasional and much needed humorous touch. Kitsch, who headlined the Berg stinker Battleship the same year he starred in the ill-fated John Carter, experiences a complete career resurrection in this movie. He’s a strong, sympathetic presence as Murphy.

Hirsch, who was so good in the recent Prince Avalanche and The Motel Life, breaks hearts as Dietz, who loses his drawing hand during battle. Foster is perhaps the most powerful of the bunch as a man who actually gets shot in the head yet keeps on fighting.

Lone Survivor pulverizes the senses, for sure. It also features good actors at the top of their games giving the film the sort of emotional anchor sorely missing in too many military based movies.

The men depicted in Lone Survivor don’t die waving American flags accompanied by “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” They die some of the hardest, loneliest deaths you will ever see in a movie. Ω

American Hustle

David O. Russell continues his impressive directorial roll with this semicomedic look at the notorious ’70s Abscam scandal. This is basically Russell shooting for Scorsese glory here, and while the style of the movie seems copied at times, there’s no denying the power of the ensemble cast. Bradley Cooper scores laughs as a pathetic FBI agent looking to make a name for himself, and Christian Bale looks great in a comb-over as the conman forced into an alliance with the law. Amy Adams gets one of the strangest roles of the year as a con artist pretending to be British, and she pulls it off quite nicely, while Jennifer Lawrence steals her every scene as a seemingly dim Long Island housewife. You also get stand up comic Louis C.K. as Cooper’s field boss. (C.K. canceled a show I had tickets for to make this movie. I was pissed but, after seeing how good he is here, I’m OK with it now.) The film falls a little short of greatness due to its sometimes carbon copy feel, but the cast pulls it out of the fire. It also has the best use of Robert De Niro as a bad guy in many years.

Inside Llewyn Davis

Spike Jonze wrote and directed this beautiful love story about a man smitten with his computer’s operating system (voiced by a lovely Scarlett Johansson).

Johansson does mesmerizing voice work as Samantha, a Siri-like voice operating system that is so charming, her new owner (Joaquin Phoenix) finds her far more interesting than actual humans. She makes you believe a man could fall in love with his computer. Jonze, who wrote the screenplay, has made a futuristic movie that looks and feels realistic, creating a future land where it’s just perfectly OK to date your computer. He approaches the topic seriously, and somehow manages to make it all work. The movie not only looks beautiful, as Jonze films often do, but sounds great thanks to a soundtrack from Arcade Fire. Phoenix turns in some of the finest acting of his career.

August: Osage County

Tracy Letts’ play comes to the big screen with a big cast featuring Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper and more. After a family tragedy, a group of sisters and their men return home to Texas and their dying mother (Streep).

Mother was mean when they were growing up, and she remains mean in her dying days, much to the annoyance of daughter Barbara (Roberts), whose doing her best not to follow in mother’s footsteps. The cast is strong, with most of them turning in great work, including Juliette Lewis doing her first truly good acting in a long while. The lone exception would be Benedict Cumberbatch playing the slow sibling. He’s just all wrong for the part. The movie is super dark and ugly and full of people acting like true jerks. While the story isn’t anything all that new, the cast makes it worth seeing based on the power of their performances.

The 1961 Greenwich Village folk music scene is the rich setting for the latest Coen brothers triumph, the brilliant Inside Llewyn Davis. Featuring a knockout performance from Oscar Isaac as the title character, and the usual topnotch writing and directing from brothers Joel and Ethan, it’s easily one of the year’s best films. The movie, loosely based on the life of late folk singer Dave Van Ronk, follows Llewyn as he surfs couches with somebody’s orange tabby in tow, sporting a pretty bad attitude after the loss of a friend. Carey Mulligan plays the married woman he may’ve impregnated, and she does beautiful things with reserved rage.

John Goodman is stellar as a jazz musician in the back seat of a car Llewyn travels in as he heads to Chicago for the audition of his life. The cast is full of rich Coen characters played by the likes of Justin Timberlake, F. Murray Abraham, Adam Driver and Max Casella. Isaac and the cast do their own guitar playing and singing, with Isaac being especially impressive during his solo numbers. As with all Coen movies, this looks amazing, and features great laughs mixed with the somber tones. I couldn’t love these guys more.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Matthew McConaughey continues his career resurgence in this film based on the life of Ron Woodroof, a man who tested HIV positive in the ’80s, and had to battle the FDA while smuggling non-approved drugs into the country for himself and fellow sufferers. McConaughey lost many pounds to look the part, and it’s a frightening transformation. He also delivers an incredible performance. This, combined with his work earlier this year in Mud, easily establishes 2013 as the best year of his career. Jared Leto does incredible work as Rayon, a crossdresser who helps Woodroof distribute the drugs to those needing some sort of treatment. Director Jean-Marc Vallee does a good job of capturing a time where HIV was a death sentence, and the terror that surrounded those who were fighting for their lives. This is a very good movie with great performances.

I have to admit I was more into the strange Mickey Mouse short that precedes this musical adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Snow Queen” than the actual feature. It features retro Mickey busting out of a black and white film and becoming 3-D as he battles a bad guy kidnapping Minnie. It’s worth the price of admission. As for the actual feature movie, Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel have wonderful voices, and the visuals are fun to behold in this middle-of-the-road Disney fare. It has a lot of music—some of it quite good, some of it, well, not—and a beautiful look to it. For recent Disney animation, my vote goes to Tangled for best, but that’s not to say this one is a letdown. It’s OK. Just OK. It’s about on par with Pixar’s latest, Monster’s University. It’s fun to watch, but not altogether memorable.

Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson are charming as Walt Disney and Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers in this obviously whitewashed look at Disney’s attempts at getting Travers’ approval to make a movie out of her book. Of course, most of us know he succeeded, but many don’t know that Travers was quite the holdout. The movie splits time between the Disney/Travers business and Travers’ childhood, where we find out much of Mary Poppins was based on her troubled father (Colin Farrell) and actual nanny. B.J. Novak and Jason Schwartzman are wonderful as the Sherman brothers, who made Poppins into a musical, much to the chagrin of Travers. The movie takes a lot of artistic license with the situation.

Even though Travers is depicted as difficult here, she was far more adversarial in real life and never approved of the movie (those animated penguins!). Still, the film is fun to watch, with Hanks and Thompson making it all very worthwhile and heartwarming.

Martin Scorsese’s latest explodes in your face like a mortar full of deranged bliss. Leonardo DiCaprio, in the performance of the year, plays slimeball stockbroker and convicted felon Jordan Belfort, a real life scumbag who made millions selling penny stocks at a Long Island, New York brokerage. The movie, based on Belfort’s own autobiography, takes people doing bad, bad things to such an extreme that the film doesn’t just stand as one of the best of 2013, but one of its best and most deranged comedies. Like Ray Liotta in Goodfellas, DiCaprio talks to the camera on occasion, often during the sort of highly elaborate tracking shots that have become a Scorsese mainstay. It’s in these moments, and during Belfort’s drug-fueled “rouse-the-troops, fire-breathing speeches to his crew, where DiCaprio does his most exhilarating, bona fide nuts acting to date. He is a formidable competitor for a Best Actor Oscar. He’s certainly my pick.

Good bet Bluff Caller Say that you’re a dude on a date with a hippie girl. She’s real sweet and cute, although a little flaky, and you get by Brad Bynum the sense that she likes to smoke a lot of pot. Anyway, you really like bradb@ her. Over dinner at some farm-tonewsre view.c om table restaurant in midtown, she mentions that her favorite bands are My Morning Jacket and Kings of Leon. Somehow, you end up back at your place, drinking wine on the couch. She asks if you’d like to smoke a joint. You agree and decide it’s time to put on some music.

Now, what album to choose?

Reno band Bluff Caller’s debut album The Jungle Academy might be a good choice for this situation.

It’s lightly psychedelic, but also smooth enough for a romantic evening. The band’s vocalist and guitar player Cody Rea describes Bluff Caller as “alternative rock, with R&B undertones at all times”—which is a little vague.

The group is a sort of psychedelic roots rock band, with a bit of funk and soul, especially in the rhythm section. Rea’s vocals and songwriting are evocative of British singer-songwriter David Gray or Glen Hansard of the folk rock group the Swell Season and the musical movie Once—sort of on the hipper end of what used to be euphemistically called “adult contemporary.” The songs have a lot of texture and dreamy atmosphere—might call it dreampop.

The band started three years ago while Rea and guitarist/keyboardist Spencer Mead were college roommates who started writing songs together. They eventually recruited

drummer Dominic Kelly, and Rea asked his brother Greg to play bass, even though he had never played the instrument before.

“He came to me and said, ‘Do you want to be in a rock band?

Here’s a bass. Learn how to play it,’” says Greg.

It’s surprising that Greg had little musical experience before joining the band, because his bouncy, syncopated bass parts lock perfectly into Kelly’s funky drum patterns.

Mead is the atmosphere and utility man, alternating between guitar and keyboards, sometimes changing back and forth within single songs.

Everybody in the band sings, though Cody Rea always takes lead and his brother is the primary harmony vocalist. The brothers’ voices complement each other well in the way that’s usually only possible for vocalists related to one another.

The Jungle Academy has a funny, intentionally retro album cover, a throwback to the pink neon, skinny ties and perfect coifs of ’80s new wave.

Rea’s lyrics are mostly about girls and other college-aged concerns, though he also writes about what he calls “generational stuff,” like the song “90s Kids,” which he describes as “an ode to being raised by technology.”

“Keys, Wallet, Phone,” a title that references the walking-out-thedoor checklist, is “actually a song about losing all three,” according to Rea. (The lyric “we got so fucked up last night” pops out.)

In the song “Bipolar Sky,” airy, reverbed-out guitars and vocals seem to drift off, evaporating, before turning into a solid, icy groove.

“Retro Grouch” is an actual out-andout rocker, with rolling, propulsive drums and harmonized guitar leads that will satisfy a Thin Lizzy fan.

But despite the moments of evoking the power of ’70s mustache rock, Bluff Caller is primarily a relatively mellow, accessible band.

“We do tend to get more girls to shows than guys,” says Cody.

So, six months later, when that hippie chick is now your girlfriend, and it’s her turn to pick a date night activity, don’t be surprised when she says she wants to go see Bluff Caller. Ω

At the time, only men were allowed to play theatrical roles. The play centers on a performer named Kynaston, a star of the London stage praised for his interpretations of Shakespeare’s most tragic female roles, including ophelia, Cleopatra and Desdemona. but when an unknown named Margret hughes plays Desdemona one night at an illegal theater, instead of stopping the show, King Charles ii changes the law to allow women to act. by the stroke of a pen, Kynaston’s world is turned upside down. The play opens on Friday, Jan. 17, and runs through Feb. 8, at brüka Theatre, 99 N. Eat, pray, barf My girlfriend and I just got back from vacationing in India, where we lived in an ashram, essentially a yoga camp, and she studied yoga and meditation for a month. Since we’ve been back, she’s been wearing a sari everywhere, which stands out completely here, and she greets everyone by bowing and saying “namaste” (an Indian greeting). She talks constantly to people about spirituality and energy and, to be honest, comes off as totally pretentious. This is all starting to wear on me.

Is it shallow of me to be bothered by her new look and attitude when she’s feeling so enlightened?

It’s understandable that you feel guilty about being annoyed that your girlfriend has gone Suddenly Swami.

If she’d come back from Paris and started marching around in a beret and an Hermes scarf and speaking French to the grocery bagger, you’d probably deem her an obnoxious phony and suspect she has a superiority complex (a shrink term for covering up feelings of inferiority by acting superior). The problem is we’re told we have to “respect” people’s spiritual beliefs and practices.

We should respect their right to have them, providing they don’t involve baby eating or witch burnings, but there’s been what British philosopher Simon Blackburn calls “respect creep,” the expectation of “more substantial respect”—admiration, approval, and deference.

Well, these things are earned. They can’t be expected or demanded, and it’s no more wrong to have critical 28 | RN&R |

thoughts about somebody’s spiritual beliefs and expression than about their politics or choice of pizza toppings.

So, getting back to your girlfriend, no, she isn’t exempt from being considered a pretentious jerk when she signs her credit card slip in Sanskrit.

It also isn’t “shallow” to feel that the new her doesn’t work for the relatively unchanged you. (As a flamboyant bigmouth, I can tell you that flamboyant bigmouth girls aren’t for just any guy.) But you might give this some time. This might just be the yoga ’n’ meditation version of somebody excited about losing weight on a new diet and wanting to spread the word, and she may become less affected, preachy and annoying in a month or two.

To help speed the process, you could gently ask her to consider whether her clothes and talk might be creating distance between her and other people. A person shows their spiritual growth and attracts others to their path through how they act and treat people. The saying is “Be the change you want to see in the world,” not “Dress as the change.” Sure, Buddha dressed like an Asian monk, but it isn’t the monk suit that made the man. If Buddha were from Milwaukee, he’d be sitting cross-legged in Levi’s and a trucker hat. Ω

New minor at the university The university now offers an 18-credit minor program in unmanned autonomous systems available to students with mechanical engineering, electrical and biomedical engineering or computer science and engineering majors. Why was this minor created?

The reason we created it was because we were involved in the whole state of Nevada effort towards being designated an FAA [Federal Aviation Administration] test site. And so we got involved on the educational side of it. It was actually our dean, Dr. Maragakis, who said that we needed to be proactive and do a little bit more than just be involved but actually establish some sort of educational program for our students because if this whole designation of the FAA test site happened and the state started putting more emphasis on unmanned autonomous systems, then it would be good to have training for our students. So the easiest thing we could do without major resources was establish a minor.

Now, thousands of blacks and whites attend classes together at the Universities of Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, and it’s a ho-hum yawner all the way. No biggie. Martin would approve.

Sure, there are plenty of racial problems hanging around, and some new ones, too. But don’t let anyone tell you that we haven’t made huge strides in the simple, decent act of getting along and tolerating one another. We have. It took decades to get there, it’s true. But somewhere along the way, slowly and grudgingly, real, organic, accepted integration became the norm, to the point where now, the scenes I witnessed at the Meaningless Bowl don’t even register. They’re totally ordinary.

We no longer even think about them.

Which was, MLK would say, always the goal. Ω

And yet, much has changed in the last 50 years. Mostly for the better. I hope you can dig this memo from the Department of Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows, Macrocosmic Division, because it just happens to be true.

It hit me while watching the Meaningless Bowl, held this year in Kudzu Heights, Ala. The camera was panning the crowd, looking for pretty girls, but what it was showing while it searched was a scene of complete integration. It’s a scene we now take for granted, a scene that seems utterly unremarkable, which makes it fantastically cool. Shown on my screen was a thoroughly integrated crowd of black and white people, all sitting together, watching the game, doing what fans do. The fact that the numbers were about even, 50-50, black and white, spoke wordlessly and convincingly of how things have indeed gotten better. I have memories as a kid of the front page news that, OMG, a black man was actually allowed into the University of Mississippi. He could only do so

What excites me is the interest from the students. The students are amazing. They catch on to what’s going to be hot and big in engineering very quickly. And for me, the fact that these students are so excited, and they want to gain the knowledge, that’s very exciting. And the fact that we, in engineering, can work with all these companies ... I work on industry partnerships, and we’re already talking to companies and trying to partner with them with educational programs or research. Ω

In 1955, in Montgomery, Ala., the good Dr. King told his followers, “If we are arrested every day, if we are exploited every day, if we are trampled over every day, don’t ever let anyone pull you so low as to hate them. We must use the weapon of love. We must have compassion and understanding for those who hate us. We must realize so many people are taught to hate us that are not totally responsible for their hate.

The words sound good, high and noble. But boy, as you can imagine, they are not easy to apply. Imagine, for example, trying to not hate a redneck cop who is beating on your friends with his very hateful nightstick or mowing them down with a hateful high-powered fire hose. The path of non-violence can be extreme and difficult, to say the least. When it comes time to “peace up,” many have found, it’s damned tough to hold that line.

It’s all geared toward economic development because we hope that there will be a lot of action going on in Nevada because now we have the test site designation.

So a lot of companies that need to do testing of their autonomous systems, they come to Nevada, and I think they already are coming. We’ve already met with a few companies that are interested in either moving to Nevada or bringing some business to Nevada. So we need to have the workforce ready. This will give the students an edge because they already have the technical know-how to work with these companies.

What’s most exciting about this program?

Anything that doesn’t actually have a human being in it, driving it, so for instance, the aerial vehicles, like a plane would have a pilot in it. Now, these unmanned autonomous systems, like the unmanned aerial vehicles, do not have a human being in it piloting it. The piloting is being done from the ground with no human being on the actual vehicle. They come in various sizes.

They can be very tiny or they can be huge.

You can put in a lot of instrumentation, sensors, things on it and have it go into situations like for instance where there’s a wildfire, and it would be dangerous for human beings to go or they couldn’t reach it. We know that in Nevada we have terrain that is hard to get to. We could send one of these there to either look at what’s going on or, if the vehicle is big enough, to actually drop chemicals or whatever is needed to try to put it out.
