Some of the top amateur and professional BMX racers from across the U.S. and the world will compete in the first event of the 2014 national series season. More than 1,500 BMX racers are expected to attend the bicycle motocross event, which begins on Friday, Jan. 10, in the Main Indoor Arena at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center, 1350 N. Reno Little Theater presents this original play by local playwright Bob Gabrielli about how we choose our lives, or “pre-incarnation,” as part of its Off-Off-Wells series. TOCCATA— Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus presents its ninth annual Winter MusicFest, which kicked off on Jan. 4 with its “Brrroque Masters” concert series. The program includes Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Trumpets, Handel’s Organ Concerto Op. 4 No. 4 in F major and Bach’s Cantata No. 4 from the Christmas Oratorio, among other selections. Soloists include sopranos Joy Strotz, Anna Helwing and Michelle Norris, organist David Brock and trumpeters Mark Lord and William van Meter. Reno Tahoe Comedy presents Nevada Opera’s vampire twist on Mozart’s comic melodrama Don Giovanni featuring vocal talent from NVO’s Chorus and Young Artists Program. This version of the opera explores Don Giovanni’s character and actions as a vampire instead of a seducer. Performances are at noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Pioneer Underground located in the plaza of Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, 100 S. BowlinG is lotsafun
This fundraiser benefits Amplify Life, a local organization that serves children, teens and adults with developmental disabilities. The ticket includes three games, free parking, shoe rental, access to a silent auction and raffle prizes and music by local artists Joel Ackerson and Zack Teran of The Novelists, Hollywood Trashed and Critical Mass. Proceeds from the event will help send people to Camp Lotsafun, a summer camp that provides recreational, therapeutic and educational opportunities to people with disabilities and also provides respite care for their families. Winter Trails Day offers those new to snow sports the chance to try snowshoeing and cross country skiing for free and discover the fitness and social benefits they provide. Join organizations and vendors for a day of winter fun with mini-snowshoe and cross country ski lessons, interpretive hikes with the Tahoe Rim Trail Association, education, product demos, food and entertainment and free trail passes for pre-registered participants. Bring your own snowshoe or cross country ski equipment if you have them. Demo products from vendors will be available, but are limited. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center and Snowshoe Center, 15275 Alder Creek Road, Truckee. Carpooling is recommended due to limited parking. The center will have shuttles available once the lot is full.
