About the Boys & Girls Club HISTORY

The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows has grown from a single site in 1976 to 20 sites serving more than 11,000 kids a year - becoming the premier agency serving youth in the Truckee Meadows.

The primary site of the Boys & Girls Club is at E. 9th Street in Reno, with other sites hosted in 14 schools, 5 teen centers, Neil Road and Lemmon Valley youth sites and an Early Learning Program at the E.L. Wiegand Youth Center. A new facility on Foster Drive in Reno is scheduled to open in early 2014, enabled by the generosity of the William N. Pennington Foundation and people throughout our communities.

his is one of the Reno News & Review’s most important and unique projects, for it touches many people in the community while helping to create better awareness and understanding of one of the Reno area’s most valued organizations: The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows.

The “Kids N&R” has received 1st place honors in its category for 5 years as “Best Special Section” in the Nevada Press Association’s Better Newspaper Awards – a statewide competition judged each year by an out-of-state panel.

What is PBIS and the Be GREAT Values?

T

his year our clubs took the first steps in developing a more positive and safe environment for everyone at the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. Over the past year, we have devoted much time to developing and implementing a club-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program for our clubs. The PBIS program leads us away from punishing members for their negative behaviors and instead guides them to positive ones. Our PBIS team which consist of club coordinators and directors developed a behavioral matrix that included specific behavioral expectations for all our clubs. These expectations are our ‘Be GREAT Values’ and have been reviewed and agreed upon by the staff of the Boys & Girls Club.

Our ‘Be GREAT Values’ teach our members expected behaviors while

at our clubs. The acronym, GREAT, is the format that was decided to present these expectations in a fun and easy way for our members to learn. The letters in the acronym stand for Generous, Respectful, Encouraging, Accountable, and Trusting. Over the past year, our members have been learning the ‘Be GREAT Values’ and what each value entails. (Please see our Be GREAT Value Matrix which identifies clearly the expectations that we have for all members at each site.)

Our ‘Be GREAT Values’ promote positive reinforcement by acknowledging our members who exhibit these values by rewarding them with “Club Cash”. Catching a member doing something good helps promote positive reinforcement throughout our clubs. Club Cash can then be saved and spent at our sites for various prizes.

The National Fine Art Exhibit T

he National Fine Art Exhibit is something that the Boys & Girls Club takes pride in participating in each year. Members from four different age groups: 6-9, 10-12, 13-15 and 15-18, submit their art work in 10 categories against other Club members across the world.

Throughout the year members at all of our sites participate in programing specific to a category. Monochromatic drawing consists of pictures created using pencils, charcoal, crayons, etc. resulting in a submission all one color or hue. Multicolored Drawing is similar to the monochromatic drawing

however it may contain multiple colors.

The Pastel category consists of chalk or pastel. The paint category includes Watercolor; including tempera, pan-type or tube based paints and Oil or Acrylic which includes oil and acrylic based paints. Other categories are Print Making which is created by transferring an impression of a composition from one surface to paper (silk screening, etching, etc.), Mixed Media which is the combination of any other categories onto one two-dimen-

sional surface. The final categories are Collage, Sculpture and Group Project; group projects do not need to fall into any one category and simply consists of a group of Club members working on one project together.

The works of art are judged nationally only after a local or regional exhibit. Our local exhibit will be held at the

Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows DWR facility and will be judged by members of our community. Our local exhibit will be open to the community and we invite everyone to come and support the young artists at the Boys & Girls Club in our community.

eno Christian Academy 7th and 8th graders spend an hour and a half every Tuesday and Thursday in the youth computer lab at the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows at 9th street in Reno.

Here they learn a variety of programs to enhance their media literacy. This fall they worked on creating their own comic books using Microsoft Power Point and Paint, they learned how to loop, mix, and arrange their own music compositions using Acid Express software and currently are working on creating a Claymation animated film to enter into the Boys & Girls Club Digital Arts Festival. As a fun side project they decided to share their digital art skills by creating a series of comic pictures using Microsoft Paint for this issue of Kids News & Review.

hen I came to the Boys & Girls Club a little over four years ago, I was charged with the job of working closely with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Little did I know that it would become one of the neatest and most rewarding relationships I have built. The people at the Food Bank work feverishly in the Northern Nevada community to help provide food, and some nonfood items, to those who are in need of help in Northern Nevada and Northern California.

I am so grateful to be a partner and work with an organization as great as the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. From the truck drivers to the warehouse crew to the ladies that keep us in line at the parking lot distribution, everyone has been a pleasure to work with.

This year, the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows served more

than 200,000 meals to the children in the community. Any child who came to one of our facilities where we serve meals was able to get a healthy, balanced, hot meal—whether they were a Club member or not.

A lot of hungry tummies were filled, and the smiles of appreciation make it all worth it.

The fresh fruits and vegetables that we receive from the Food Bank have helped us provide the healthy and balanced meals for these kids.

Thanks to their help, we have gone for weeks at a time where we have not had to serve a single serving of fruit from a can. The fresh cantaloupes, apples, kiwis, cherries, oranges, grapes and watermelons, just to name a few, have been very well received by the children.

I want to thank the Food Bank of Northern Nevada for helping us take care of these needs. From those fresh fruits and vegetables to the meats and breads, it is all used to feed these children. No child goes hungry around here. Thank you again, Food Bank of Northern Nevada, for all you do for the Boys & Girls Club and for our community.

Interview with

Cliff Porter

T

he music scene at The Club at Hug High School has been steadily growing since it has been hosting music classes for its members. Cliff Porter, one of the members of The Club, is taking his talent and his music to the public.

Cliff’s R&B style music is reminiscent of Boyz II Men’s tones and he plays all his music by ear. Cliff’s musical beginnings started when he began attending Traner Middle School in Reno, Nevada. He taught himself piano and took a percussion class from the school. Now he is working on developing his vocals.

Cliff has been with the Boys & Girls Club for about five years and began coming to the site at Hug High School as a freshman. His musical talent began blossoming from youth as he used to watch his father play professionally as a drummer and now is not only following in his footsteps of his father, but occasionally jamming with him in the public scene. On Wednesday nights Cliff and his father play at an event called Flow featured at Bodega Night Club in Reno. Here Cliff and his father get to practice their talents along with other musicians in an open mic night.

This event is open to all ages and is a place where musicians swap in and out of sets with each other getting the opportunity to jam with multiple musicians. As Cliff puts it, “It usually starts around 9pm and goes ‘til whenever we decide to stop.”

Cliff’s father currently plays drums for a local Reno band “Jelly Bread” and instilled Cliff with his own found passion for music.

Some of his other musical inspirations include Neo Soul, Musiq Soulchild, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, George Duke, Earth Wind & Fire, and as he says, “I could go on for days…”

As a hobby, musician Cliff would like to begin recording if and when he ever has access to recording equipment, but continues to develop his talent as a musician, “It’s a work in progress.” He would eventually like to teach others how to play and instill his musical passion in them.

His hope is that by teaching others how to play that it would, “allow them to have their own outlet.” He sees music as a great outlet for expression and wishes to see others touched by his music “so that it inspires them to be greater.”

of Truckee Meadows: Much more than just a safe place for kids

B

oys & Girls Club members come from all different walks of life. Some come to the Club because they need a safe and fun place to be during school breaks. Others become members to participate in the Club’s quality sports leagues, summer camps and other specialized programs. Some members come from low-income families or at-risk home lives while others come from middle-class and even more affluent home situations.

Regardless of their circumstances or reasons for becoming a Club member, one thing is consistent: the Boys & Girls Club is there to meet the needs of every child who walks through their doors, be they many or few. For Jevin Daugherty, the Boys & Girls Club helped him find his voice as he grew from a shy and cautious child into a confident young man.

Jevin spent the first eight years of his life in Vallejo, Calif., living with his mom and some extended family. “My mom used to tell me that we couldn’t trust our family,” Jevin recalled. “That’s a hard thing to hear as a kid. If I couldn’t trust my family, who could I trust?” When Jevin started showing early signs of following those around him down a path of trouble, his mom knew it was time for a change. She sent Jevin to Reno to live with his dad, stepmom and two older stepbrothers.

It was a difficult transition for Jevin. Life in Vallejo was all he knew, and he had become very untrusting of those around him. He distanced himself as much as he could from those around him, even his own family. “That was about the time my dad and stepmom signed me up for the Boys & Girls Club,” Jevin said. “My brothers went to the Club on Neil Road, and my dad knew the Club would be good for me too. I wasn’t so sure.”

“The first week or so that I was there I felt like I was being forced to go. And I was. But it wasn’t long before I started participating in some of the activities and even making friends. The kids at the Boys & Girls Club didn’t pick on me or make me feel like an outsider. Instead, they cared about me and wanted to play with me. That’s when I started to realize that there were more people in this world that I could trust.”

With the support of his family, Jevin began attending the Club regularly. As he became a teenager, Jevin joined Leaders in Training (LIT), a Club program where teens learn job skills, volunteer their time at the Club and have the opportunity to earn a paid position at the Club during the summer. “As an LIT, I realized that I really enjoyed working with kids,” Jevin said. “I especially like working with those kids who are a little quieter and cautious. They remind me of myself when I was younger. I hope that I can be that positive role model in their lives that I had at the Club.”

Today, Jevin is a high school senior with plans to attend college to study veterinary science. His hard work, positive attitude and dedication to the Club earned him the Boys & Girls Club’s 2013 Male Youth of the Year Award. “I’m not the shy, quiet kid in the

corner anymore. I’m a leader and a mentor,” Jevin said. “I’m not completely sure what my future will hold, but I know it will be bright.”

Eva Hernandez For Eva Hernandez, the Club’s 2013 Female Youth of the Year, the story is a bit different. Not only was the Boys & Girls Club there to change her life, but it also transformed the lives of her entire family. Eva was born in Reno, the youngest and only girl with four older brothers. Her parents legally emigrated from Mexico before she was born, and they worked hard to provide a good life for their family. Still, the family struggled. They lived in a difficult part of town where gang violence was common.

As a Hispanic female living in a low-income neighborhood, Eva seemed to be at a disadvantage from the start. But according to Eva, “Our lives were completely changed when a Boys & Girls Club

opened across the street from our apartment.” Her brother, Miguel, was the first to become a Club member. After that, her other brothers joined. The Club even offered Eva’s mom a job, a position she still holds today.

Eva recalls her first few days at the Club. “It was Miguel who first helped me feel at home. Every day, Miguel would participate in a program called Power Hour, where he would earn Power Points for finishing his homework at the Club. Once a month, he could cash in his points for toys and school supplies. He used to share his prizes with me, and it didn’t take me long to want to start earning my own prizes in Power Hour. After that, I was hooked.”

Eva was at the Club every day, not only because her mom worked there, but because she wanted to be a part of every program the Club had to offer.

From money management courses to leadership clubs to health classes, Eva did it all. Being at the Club even helped her learn English. When she turned 13, she too joined Leaders in Training. “The programs at the Club have reinforced the important lessons my parents have taught me since I was young—the importance of working hard to achieve your goals and create a successful future. And the importance of giving back.”

Since joining the Club, all four of Eva’s brothers have graduated high school and are either in college or have graduated from college. Miguel was even the Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year in 2008.

Today, Eva is a junior on track to graduate with an honors diploma. After graduation, she plans to attend college to major in biochemistry and molecular biology and minor in French. An incredible plan for a young lady who, as she puts it, “was from the wrong side of town with the statistics stacked high against me. But thanks to the Boys & Girls Club, I will not be a negative statistic but a positive one.”

Club looking toward the future Success stories like those of Jevin and Eva reinforce the important role the Boys & Girls Club plays in our northern Nevada community. In 2013, the Club served more than 11,000 youth at 19 locations stretching from Verdi to Fernley to Lemmon Valley.

And while their reach is broad, these satellite sites make sure that each child gets the attention they need to thrive.

Now, the Club is preparing to welcome upwards of 3,000 new members at the William N. Pennington Facility. Construction on the facility began in June and is scheduled to open its doors to the community in the spring of 2014. Located across the street from Reno High School on Foster Drive, the new facility sits on the former location of the YMCA, a property with a long history of serving the Reno/Sparks community. After sitting dormant for nearly five years, last summer the Reno City Council voted to give the land to the Boys & Girls Club. Fueled by a $9 million seed gift from the William N. Pennington Foundation, the Pennington Facility quickly became a reality.

The need was clear, especially after the YMCA closed down after nearly 50 years of service. “When the Y closed down, there was a huge void in that neighborhood,” said Mike Wurm, Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows Chief Professional Officer.

“With this new facility, we’ll be able to fill a lot of that void with the parts that fit our mission. We’ll make sure that youth have a safe and fun place to be after school plus offer specialized initiatives like sports leagues and leadership clubs.”

The case for the Pennington Facility was compelling, and many in the community were eager to get behind the project. Along with the Pennington Foundation, many other local foundations, businesses and individuals have stepped up to contribute funds to build the facility. The Club is nearing their fundraising goal, but there is still work to be done. Their Brick by Brick campaign is one way for the public to become a part of the project. For as little as $100, a family or business can purchase a customized brick that will be permanently displayed in the Pennington Facility’s front walkway.

Along with construction costs, the Club has also designed their fundraising efforts with sustainability in mind. “It’s not enough to just build a new building,”

Wurm said. “We have to be able to sustain it for generations to come.” To this end, part of the project’s fundraising goal includes two years of operating expenses, a long-term maintenance fund and some key infrastructure upgrades that will help integrate the fundraising burden of this new facility into the Club’s annual fundraising strategies.

Once the building is open, it will offer all the trademark programs and activities of a flourishing Boys & Girls Club—tutoring and homework help, sports leagues, healthy lifestyles classes, summer camp and much more. It will be a place to foster the potential in youth like Jevin and Eva. A place where northern Nevada’s future leaders will learn and grow.

Film Festival

he film festival correlates directly with the Digital Arts Program ran through the Boys & Girls Club of America. Each year beginning in February our technology coordinator runs a one week film camp at each of the BGCTM sites. Each site spends the first day crafting their story and how it will be told. Day two the team writes a script and begins preparing to shoot the film days 3 - 5. Finally, the technology coordinator edits the film the following week putting the clips together, adding audio and visual effects. The product of each of these camps is a film that is presented to a panel of judges. The judges award each film for its best accomplishments.

The movies are shown the evening of the festival in mid-May. The night of the event there is a Hollywood feel with a photographer

hat I love about the Club is that we do lots of fun stuff like art, games and computers and we get to play games, watch movies and have fun. My favorite program is that we go to computers and it’s my favorite because we learn how to make music on the computer.

love being able to hang out with my friends while playing a video game, or outside. What I like about the site is the many games that we are able to use. My favorite program is the gym, because I get to go around the gym with basketballs. It helped me learn how to play a sport that I could do later on with my friends.

y name is Gia Gauthier and I am 11 years and I go to the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows at Sun Valley Elementary. What I love about the Boys & Girls Club is that they are nice and helpful to me and others. The staff at Sun Valley Elementary also has fun filled activities every day. Sun Valley Elementary is the Pride of Washoe County School District and we all treat one another with respect and everyone at Sun Valley teaches one another different things every day. My favorite program at the club is Girly Girl. Girly Girl is where we paint girl’s nails and talk to them about different subjects. One thing that I have learned from this program is that we need to be creative and use our BE GREAT Values every day.

hat I love about the Club is we can play dodge ball. I love we can check out games. I like the staff. They are nice. It is fun and we can do art projects. We have Powerhour which is so fun because we can do our homework without getting stress. Plus, you do really fun games and we have the best staff and we don’t have to buy markers and we can color. I love having Snack Shack because I get to work it sometimes. It’s fun and we get to put the money in the money box and sometimes I get to count it. And Two Square is so fun.

he Boys & Girls Club is a place where I can come after school and do my homework. I enjoy being with the staff and talking with my friends. The special events provide some entertainment to my otherwise boring afternoons. The staff try to make this place as fun as they can. I enjoy sitting and reading my book.

We have fun board games. I love doing all of the fun activities. This is my favorite site because we have so many activities that you never get bored. It is the best site that I have ever gone to and it will be the only one. I also like that we have clubs and that we have drives, like a board game drive, toy drive and canned food drive to help people for Thanksgiving. I have learned and loved the BE G.R.E.A.T. values.

hat I love about the Club is that I am able to hang out with all of my best friends after school instead of going home and being bored out of my mind. I love all of the games they provide and all of the video games they let us ply. It also works up to where we are able to go to the gym and go outside. We also go to the computer lab. I like Smart Moves because it shows us girls what to do when we are having a normal midlight crisis.

hat I love about the Club is that I get to hang out and joke around with my friends. Also, the staff that helped me with my problem and bullies.

The Lemmon Valley site is the best out of all. Even though we may be a small Club, we are strong and powerful. Here, we all like to go on field trips. I like the staff here and without them, this place would be a mess.

My favorite program is dodge ball because I get to throw a ball and get people out. What I have learned from playing dodge ball is that it’s okay to lose.

In closing, Lemmon Valley Boys & Girls Club has changed my life in more than one way and for that I am thankful.

e are excited for the big Boys & Girls Club building to open up because we will get to play basketball. We really hope there is a pool in the building so we can go swimming and that there were little slides in it. When the new club opens our moms won’t have to drive in the snow to the Club that is too far away. We can’t wait to see the art room and make pictures with our friends, our favorite thing to do is paint. We think the new Club should be painted Christmas colors. Our friends say they are excited for computers and homework help.

absolutely love the Boys & Girls Club. I have been going to the Club for about 5 years now, and thanks to the Club, I have had an amazing time in those 5 years. Through the Club I have gotten scholarships, met great friends, and become a better person and leader.

In fact, just this summer I received a scholarship to Mountains Meadows Ranch Camp through the Club and that was a life changing experience.

The staff have had great impact in my life. All of the staff are great influences and have taught me to be a great leader. Some of my favorite staff are Oscar, Ivana, Jose, Jordan, Corine and Dan. The staff that has impacted my life the most is Amanda. She is a mentor to me and has been a very good influence towards me. She is almost like a big sister to me. I have also attended many programs at the Club such as SMART Moves, Get Fit for Life, Dance Club, SMART Girls, Drama Matters and Give Back Like Jack. My overall favorite Club though, is definitely Torch Club. In Torch Club I learned the Boys & Girls Club GREAT Values and how to be a better leader.

The Boys & Girls Club has helped me be a better person in all areas of my life and without the Club, I don’t know what type of person I would be today.

hat I love most about the Club is that it’s like my second family.

They always let me come with and without my card. The thing I love most about my site is that all my friends are here so I get to have fun. The coordinators here are fantastic with good attitudes most of the time.

My favorite program is the Keystone Club because the last project we did was to help people get food for Thanksgiving and I love to help people. I also love Powerhour because it gives you a chance to do your homework if you don’t have a chance to at home or something.

hat I love about the Boys & Girls Club is how you can make friends easily. I love the fact that the Nancy Gomes Club is close to my house. I also love that this is my old school so I can visit all my old teachers that put a smile on my face! All the staff and kids here are easy to get along with even if they are younger than me. As an older kid I feel like some of the younger members look up to me in a way. I have learned how to feel comfortable with the children that are younger than me.

My favorite program at Nancy Gomes is Sport SMART. I am a very athletic person and I love to play sports. I know coming into the Club on Thursdays, it’s always Sport SMART day and it makes me happy.

Sometimes Kelcie, the staff, lets me run Sport SMART because of how much I love it.

These are only some of the reasons that I LOVE Nancy Gomes Boys & Girls Club. I never want to leave the Boys & Girls Club because this is where I am always happy no matter how my day goes.

I love Libby Booth Club because it is lots of fun and I get to learn and do different activities everyday. I love that my Boys & Girls Club is in my school Libby Booth, because I love both places. like the Boys & Gils Club because we are always active and all the staff are super nice to us .I like Neil Road because it is very friendly and happy every day .There is also a nice and big park that we can play on and it is beautiful .My favorite activity in the club is the Homework room and the Art room .I like the Homework room because I get to do my homework and get 5 points for each page that I do . Then I could trade them for cool prizes like school supplies and more . I like the art room because I love to draw and color my drawings . I also got better at drawing and coloring. At the Club I learned how to draw better and to do my homework .Then I can get rewarded.

Interview with Eva Hernandez

T

he Boys & Girls Club is more than just a place for kids to go afterschool, just ask Eva Hernandez.

Hernandez is a junior at Damonte Ranch High School, an honors student, fluent English and Spanish speaker, and a Leader in Training (an LIT). The LIT program is a national Boys & Girls Club program focused on educating youth, age 13 – 17, about financial literacy, workforce development, and civic engagement. Hernandez is also the female contender for the Youth of the Year, an annual competition between the Boys & Girls Club best and brightest youth. Hernandez has participated in the LIT program since she was 13 years old and now, at age 16, we ask her to reflect on her time as an LIT with the Boys & Girls Club of Neil Road.

How old were you when you started going to the Club?

I was four years old, “technically six.”

What is the most gratifying part of being an LIT? The most gratifying part is making the kids laugh, I think I’m a pretty funny person, so I always have jokes. Whenever I tell them my jokes they either laugh at my joke or they laugh because I’m laughing at my own joke. Either way I always tend to hear a couple of kids telling my jokes to their peers and/ or their parents.

Do you have a funny LIT story?

I have a few but the one I always get reminded about is the one when I was playing volleyball with the kids and we had the ball up for a while and one of the kids passed me a low ball so I dove to save it because I didn’t want it to be my fault that the ball fell so as I dove and all I hear are my jeans ripping right down the front of my thigh.

What is your favorite aspect of being an LIT? My favorite aspect would be seeing a smile on the kids’ faces. Seeing other people smile actually makes you smile as well, whether you want to or not the kids will always put a smile on your face too.

What is a valuable lesson you have learned as an LIT? A valuable lesson I’ve learned is that the kids are always watching you, you always have to be careful with what you say and what you do. The kids look up to you and will mimic the things you do, so be careful.

What would you say to youth considering being a part of the LIT program?

They should definitely do it; it’s a lot of fun. Many people see it as just watching kids but that’s not how it works. You get to have as much fun as the kids.
