4x4x48

The Holland Project presents a screening of the 4x4x48 Music Video Challenge at the Nevada Museum of Art with a Q&A with filmmakers and bands after the screening. Originally conceived as a competition involving four directors, four bands and 48 hours, Holland allowed for a fifth director and band last year. The catchy name remains the same but instead of four, now five, directors have 48 hours to complete a music video for a band/artist chosen for them. Additionally, the directors are given a number of elements that each must incorporate into their film. This year’s directors are Alana Berglund and Kelci McIntosh, Sam Santoro, Babs Laukat, Jesse McCloskey and Denali Lowder and Dane Haman. The bands are Televisions, Evynn Tyler, Frontier City Sounds, Alphabet Cult and Solterona. See the results starting at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Nevada Museum of Art, 160 W. Liberty St. Tickets are $5. Call 742-1858 or visit www.hollandreno.org.

HOLIDAY ON ICE

Holiday tree lighting event

While the holiday shopping drumbeat has begun earlier this year, those who want to celebrate a more traditional start to the season are invited to gather in downtown Reno this Tuesday, Nov. 26, for the city’s annual holiday tree lighting event. The festivities begin at 5 p.m. with a performance of holiday music and Christmas carols sung by the Billinghurst Middle School Choir. Reno City Council members will lead a countdown and light up the tree, a giant sequoia that was planted at City Plaza, 10 N. Virginia St., last month and will remain the city’s permanent holiday tree. Following the tree lighting, the Rink on the River will open for the season. The rink will be open daily through Feb. 2. Since warm weather or other factors can affect the ice, it’s best to call ahead to confirm if the rink is open and operating. Admission to Rink on the River is $7.50 for adults and $5.50 for children ages 3-12 and seniors age 55 and older. Call 334-6268 for open skate hours. —Kelley Lang

The fun continues late into the night with an after party starting at midnight featuring SyWren & Athena, Key Ringz and Black Rock City All Stars. The soiree begins at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, at Bodega Nightclub, 555 E. Fourth St. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 at the door. Buy Local Marketplace

As much we decry the rampant consumerism of the holidays, we can’t deny that a lot of the economy depends on it. If you want to get a jump start on your shopping and don’t want to fight the crowds on Thanksgiving Day or Black Friday, perhaps you’d feel more willing to spend your hard-earned money if it goes to local businesses. The Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce will partner with the City of Reno to host the second annual Buy Local Marketplace on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 23-24, at the National Automobile Museum, 10 S. Lake St. The event highlights local businesses that offer unique goods and services. In addition to shopping, there will be food trucks, musical entertainment, a bounce house for the kids and appearances by Santa Claus. Admission is $2. The marketplace will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Call 636-9550.

Pray For Snow Party

Will libations bring forth a major dumping of snow on the Sierra? Probably not, but you’ll have fun appealing to the snow gods this Saturday, Nov. 23, during this month’s Reno Beer Crawl. More than 20 bars, taverns and restaurants will participate in the bar crawl, which starts at 2 p.m. at The Waterfall, 134 W. Second St. For $5, you will get a commemorative glass, wrist band and map to participating locations and for $1 you can get 6-ounce samples at each stop. Dress up in your most outlandish ’80s snow outfit and participate in a winter wear contest or test your pipes in a snow calling competition. Call 322-7373 or visit http://renobeercrawl.com.
