Let the cursing begin

We all pay the bills

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Winter’s coming. I give you fair warning. I don’t arrive at this masterful conclusion by looking at the calendar. I arrive at it by a feeling I have. I think it’s mostly in my chest—it’s a kind of a tingling, kind of an emptiness.

Sounds depressing, doesn’t it?

It’s not. It just means it’s project time in the house of the seven foibles.

It happens every winter.

Sometimes it’s resolved by something as simple as painting a wall. I guess there are some walls that could use a coat, and I actually have an idea for a copper-colored ceiling project that might be enough to irritate me, but it’s probably better to look down.

When I moved into that house, the previous owner had put down the lowest quality white carpet you ever saw. Cheap? It sheds fibers like Alice sheds her undercoat, only all year round. White?

At one time, two dogs, three children and two gardeners lived in that house. It was white for about a minute.

But I’m a cheapskate, as I may have mentioned. I’ve been removing it piece by piece. I did this whole project where I removed the carpet, old padding and two layers of tile from my foundation level floors, then I stained the carpet a lovely shade of mustard. It looks fantastic. I paid my good friend Bill Ring to put down an incredible hickory hardwood floor in the living and dining rooms.

I’m probably going to do something myself this time. God help me, I might even try to tile the master bedroom and bath.

But really, what I’m thinking, is, wouldn’t it be cool to do a room’s floor with muslin or some other textured, loosely woven cloth? Sort of decoupage it to the floor and then shellac the hell out of it. I’ve got some coffee bags that might do the trick.

What do you think? A weekend’s worth of work? Or should I start my therapy now? I’m certainly not going to begin this job until the end of the semester, but I feel as though I should get some second opinions. Please, somebody, talk some sense into me.

Re “Hunters pay the bills” (Letters to the Editor, Oct. 24): Now it’s personal. I thought the name calling was over, but I guess I was wrong. I was raised in a hunting family and learned to hunt as a kid.

I understand the mind of hunters. I took my dad hunting a few years ago because all of his other friends are too old to go. We had a good time, and I understand his point of view, and I think he understands mine.

There are hunters I respect and there are yahoos that I don’t want anything to do with. Anybody who tells me they should be able to hunt because they pay the bills, I put in the yahoo category.

First of all, I pay the bills too. I’ve spent more hours tearing down fences, etc. in the name of wildlife than most of these yahoos have spent hunting, so don’t tell me “hunters pay the bills.”

I can spout statistics, too. I’m not the only one out there. There are a lot of people like me. I’ve worked with the Department of Wildlife, and there are people in that organization I respect and people I despise. (By the way, I’ve worked in southern Nevada a lot and with various groups, and I’ve never seen the letter writer’s group out there.)

Bottom line—like most agencies, the DOW is financially driven. They go where the money is. Hunters are like lobbyists. They fork over the money and then want a seat at the table, which they have. I don’t blame the DOW, but I still think they should call themselves the “Department of Killing Wildlife.” Ever seen their website?

It’s not the “I pay the bills therefore, I’m allowed it kill them” that is the argument. Nor is it the “they need to be managed, because they’re dumb animals” that is the argument. We both, hunters and animal support groups, want the same thing. A healthy, thriving wildlife population. The difference is how we get there. Hunters argue that wildlife needs to be managed, I argue that hunters/trappers need to be managed. Meanwhile, while we’re arguing, animals are dying. Or as the hunters say, they’re being harvested.

I would suggest that both sides refrain from ignoring the other side’s point of view and start by reading a book titled Some We Love, Some We

Our Mission To publish great newspapers that are successful and enduring. To create a quality work environment that encourages people to grow professionally while respecting personal welfare. To have a positive impact on our communities and make them better places to live.

Hate, Some We Eat: Why It’s So Hard to Think Straight About Animals by Hal Herzog. It doesn’t solve the problem, but it asks the right questions. It’s time we faced up to our obligations and stop pointing the finger. Or is the problem going to solve itself like the grizzly, wolf and others did?

One last thing that’s a bit off the subject that I would like explained.

Where are hunters on the issue of wild horses? The wild horses are destroying the habitat of other wild animals, yet there is no hunting season on horses.

Shouldn’t we be managing these animals? Instead, the DOW “manages” a wildlife wetlands, like the one south of Washoe Lake, closed during the spring mating season to humans, dogs and such, but open in the fall to hunters (and other humans stupid enough to be out there among the yahoos). Where’s the logic here?

Trainor’s got it goin’ on Re “Trainor needs practice” (Letters to the Editor, Oct. 24): Thank you very much for adding Brendan Trainor to your editorial staff.

Trainor is well-educated when it comes to politics, the Constitution, banking, the Federal Reserve, and other topical subjects. He also does not just “talk.”

Trainor has thrown his hat in the ring on many occasions, running as a Libertarian candidate.

That brings me to Robert Leavitt’s criticisms of Trainor. Leavitt takes issue with Trainor’s use of “Joe the Plumber” in his column, “War and Other Nonessential Functions” (Let Freedom Ring, Oct. 17). He doesn’t know which “Joe the Plumber” Trainor has in mind. I was able to easily deduce that Trainor was trying to explain the frustration people (Joe the Plumbers, bakers, construction workers, mechanics) feel when they labor under high taxes, spending half a year’s wages just to pay “their fair share,” only to see government employees at low levels earning six-figure salaries/ benefits. Mid-level and high-level government servants routinely have stratospheric salaries/benefits and

often with no accountability of job performance, or repercussions for poor performance. Leavitt hopes that Tom Frieden, MD, MPH, director of the Centers for Disease Control, is paid just a tad more than “Joe the Plumber.”

What Leavitt doesn’t seem to understand is that Trainor would prefer that Leavitt not be paid at all!

Why do we even need a federal Centers for Disease Control? What good has it done? How much is it controlled by the major pharmaceutical companies and food producers who would like to keep us sick, or addicted so we’ll consume their products?

Leavitt mentions the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan: “Two fatally flawed policies from the past—one of which the current president got us out of, while he is actively working to get us out of the second.”

We’re out of Iraq? Hello! Excuse me! We have billions of military infrastructure in Iraq, and we’re not leaving any time soon. Same for Afghanistan, and our POTUS is itching to get us on the ground in Syria and Iran.

I’m positive Trainor doesn’t see a lick of foreign policy difference between Bush and Obama, so don’t try to get him to play, “Who are the peaceniks? Democrats or Republicans?”

Leavitt goes on, “Large government vs. small government? Wrong question!

The correct question? A government primarily focused on assisting and protecting the mass of the people vs. one primarily focused on the problems of the top 1 percent.” Again, this comment would be moot with Trainor, as we agree that the best government is the one that stays out of the way of all people. Let everyone have the best crack at success with free markets and little to no government interference.

Leavitt also takes issue with business licenses. Didn’t he read Trainor’s column? Business licenses are just methods to collect revenue. They have nothing to do with quality or reputation of any business. Leavitt concludes by remarking that Trainor “will probably require much supervision to insure that he avoids becoming simply a ‘yesman’ for the extreme right.”

Leavitt’s letter leads me to believe he is a yes-man for a government of babysitters that meddles in every form of free-enterprise, and believes that no

one can take care of themselves. These are ideas totally controversial to what our Founding Fathers intended when this country was formed. I’m glad there are people like Brendan Trainor, whose writing embodies Ben Franklin’s astute quote, “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Be right at the light A new law in regard to Nevada’s traffic laws, AB117 took effect on Oct. 1, 2013. This law has a component that is ambiguous, and the law should be clarified because of the problems of adjudicating the law.

The laws states that “a motorcycle, moped or trimobile or … a bicycle or an electric bicycle” can pass through a red light, treating it like a stop sign, if the traffic sensor doesn’t sense the vehicle there, only if the rider waits through two consecutive red light cycles.

It’s worth noting here that there are 12 other states that have similar laws, including Tennessee. That law, TCA 55-8-110, is better because it adds that it’s unlawful for a cyclist to go through a red light with the belief that the light sensor isn’t sensing them when the light was actually functioning. There is no such part in the Nevada law.

In case an officer approaches an intersection and sees a cyclist go through a red light, he could believe the cyclist was acting unlawfully and issues her a citation. If she contests the citation, and it’s proved the light was functioning, then it’s unclear if the act was unlawful.

View from the ivory tower There’s a discussion going on within the editorial department about how the university can best serve the people, and it’s symbolized by the university’s proposed lease-to-purchase of the Community Development building on Sinclair Street. That lease is supposed to “give the University of Nevada, Reno a downtown Reno presence and provide a convenient location for businessand community-oriented outreach services,” according to the university’s website.

The first side of the argument says that the university has been failing in its responsibility to collaborate in the local community, to work with local groups to elevate the quality of life in the Truckee Meadows, and that it is literally and metaphorically separate from the community. The university must move into the community and lose its ivory tower status.

The second side says that UNR taking over the Sinclair Street building will not move the campus closer to the community. It will move the campus closer to the business community, to money and power. The campus will become more ivory tower, not less. Powerbrokers who already have too much say over higher education policy will be even more influential on campus priorities.

Further, if the city has an unused office building downtown, it needs to sell it off to private parties so that businesses will use it for office space or other commercial purposes, contributing to revival of the downtown instead of further draining it with another

government property. The Reno City Council needs to kill the deal with the university, and the university needs to shrink, not expand. That will also revive the late UNR president Milton Glick’s vision of reducing the campus footprint by building up instead of out.

The first side says having a physical presence networked into the community—more like an octopus than its current “node” structure—will increase interaction with all aspects of the community, not just the power structure. This side of the argument would go as far as to build a dormitory in one of the closed properties downtown, like the old Virginian Hotel, which would add to the university’s growth without further decreasing parking, increasing traffic and negatively affecting the area around the university.

And even further, through increased engagement, the university can put its scholars’ particular skills to use—like engineering or technology—to consider and help solve shared problems like crosswalk safety or traffic light synchronization.

Each of these sides has a common point: UNR does not adequately address the needs of the common community in Reno. As a land grant institution, serving the needs of the community—not just the business community—is a mandate.

And one additional aside: It would be nice if local journalism entities had scrutinized this deal instead of, as in the case of KTVN News, simply posting the UNR press release on its website. Ω

People don’t think before they speak Here we go again.

It should be funny because it’s just so ridiculous. And while we often laugh off the offensive remarks, there is also a predictable reaction cycle of statement, denial, clarification, and insincere apology that isn’t very funny at all. by Republican leaders now act more Sheila Leslie quickly to denounce embarrassing remarks and with each episode they seem to escalate faster from polite criticism to harsh rebuke. But there is little public questioning of why many elected Republicans are so careless with their words or what the party is doing to address this internal disaster.

Last week presented two examples, one from afar and one from just down the road. Both men are state representatives who seemingly represent local demographics and political thought.

First up, Indiana Representative Bob Morris, R-Fort Wayne. In February 2012, Rep. Morris sent a letter to each member of the “Republic Caucus” in his state explaining why he declined to sign a resolution

recognizing the 100th Anniversary of the Girl Scouts of America.

He cited “abundant evidence” (although he never provided any) that the Girl Scouts have adopted the “agenda” of Planned Parenthood and urged his colleagues to join him in his quest to deny “legitimacy to a radicalized organization.” He complained that the Girl Scouts promoted mostly “feminists, lesbians or communists” as role models.

Last week Rep. Morris finally made it to the insincere apology stage, saying he did regret the fact the letter had reached the public as he intended it only as advisory notice to his legislative colleagues.

Nevada had its own embarrassing episode of “say what you really think, deny you said it, then clarify what you said, and apologize, sort-of” last week when a videotape of a meeting of a Republican club in Virginia City revealed startling statements by Assemblymember Jim Wheeler, R-Minden.

In a discussion about why he polls his constituents to determine his vote

on a controversial issue, he declared he would even vote for slavery if that’s what his constituents desired.

“That’s what a republic is about. You elected a person for your district to do your wants and wishes, not the wants and wishes of a special interest, not his own wants and wishes, yours.”

Setting aside the repugnant and inconceivable example of slavery, if Assemblymember Wheeler really believes we should formulate public policy based on polls, why have a Legislature? Even after completing a legislative session, he seems to misunderstand the concept of a representative hearing all the testimony and discussion on a controversial issue and then using his own presumably moreinformed judgment to make a decision that is best for his constituents.

Republican leaders quickly employed their new “public outrage” reaction strategy, with Senate Minority Leader Mike Roberson, R-Las Vegas, tweeting that the Assemblymember should “find a new line of work.”

Think Free

Unlike Rep. Morris, Assemblymember Wheeler didn’t need a year and a half to reach the insincere apology stage. Within hours he told the Las Vegas Sun his words were not to be taken literally and “If someone is offended by this, then I sincerely apologize.”

After more offensive remarks surfaced about Southern Nevada, including the suggestion that Nevada trade Las Vegas to California for the rest of Lake Tahoe, the Las Vegas Chamber and the Las Vegas ReviewJournal called for his immediate resignation.

But much more than a resignation is needed if Republicans are to regain their status as a mainstream political force. They’re going to have to recruit rational candidates who understand an elected official can’t rant in public like he used to do at the coffee shop.

They’re going to have to show up in primary elections and reclaim their party by voting people like Morris and Wheeler out of office.

Otherwise, expect the tragicomedy to continue. Ω

The real problem is prohibition The Food and Drug Administration seeks to reschedule hydrocodone as a Schedule II Drug instead of Schedule III. This means those suffering chronic pain will have to pay for more doctor visits to get a written prescription. Phone-in renewals by Brendan Trainor will be banned. The reason given is that hydrocodone is “abused” by those who want to enjoy synthetic codeine. Scamming scripts and buying on the street enable some to party on the pills.

In 2006, Nevadans were the No. 1 users in America per capita of hydrocodone, sold combined with other drugs in brand names like Vicodin or Lortab. Nevada is still within the top five states for illicit pill use.

Many who “abuse” Vicodin do so because oral intake is safer than injecting heroin. Vicodin is actually a harm reduction tool to help them avoid AIDS and hepatitis. Most Vicodin “abusers” are in fact middle class whites

who have a job, family and home.

Some young Nevadans also use the pills at dances and parties. A small percentage become addicted.

The drug scolds will tell you in 2000 there were almost 20,000 hospital admissions due to Vicodin. They also tell you that in the same year there were 86 million new prescriptions written.

But they don’t seem to do the math that suggests that fewer than .0003 percent of hydrocodone users wind up visiting a hospital.

That is not to say that Vicodin is as safe as marijuana or psychedelic drugs like psilocybin, which cannot be linked to a single overdose. Yes, people die from recklessly using Vicodin, just as they die from recklessly using alcohol. Most Vicodin overdoses occur from mixing many pills with alcohol.

The state has done a terrible job of educating on the use and dangers of drugs. For too long it has followed the zero tolerance, DARE model that provides no helpful

medical information by promoting the idea that all drugs are equally bad and all illegal drug use is abuse.

More enlightened countries police raves only by making sure that there is plenty of water and a quiet place to calm down.

Physicians who prescribe pain medications are already heavily regulated. Many people are forced to live, even die, with severe pain due to their doctor’s fear of being seen as “over prescribing” narcotic-based pain medication. A few doctors undoubtably do operate “pill mills.” While the recreational use of marijuana is becoming politically acceptable, recreational pill use is not. But if the numbers are rising for this drug use, punishing those truly in pain is not an acceptable response. It is like the gym teacher who makes everyone in the class drop down and do 50 push-ups because the fat kids can’t run laps.

It is collectivism pure and simple.

Some Nevada politicians have indicated support for changing

state law to allow police to search confidential medical records without probable cause, looking for over-prescribing doctors.

Prescription prohibition is crossing the line between protecting the public against harms done by others and harms done only to oneself. Addiction can bring emotional harm to loved ones but that is also not a reason for government intervention.

Like Beth Green said in a recent episode of The Walking Dead, “When you love someone, hurt kinda comes with the territory.” Harming the ones you love is part of the human condition. The state should only intervene against violence and fraud perpetrated with criminal intent, not against human failings and vices. Prohibition, not drugs, is the worst problem. Keep Nevada police from fishing expeditions in medical records! Ω

Coburn’s sorry, sort of Speaking at a New York City Young Republican Club event, Oklahoma Republican U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn said, “There’s no comity with Harry Reid. I think he’s an absolute asshole.”

The comment was reported by the New York Daily News.

Some subsequent news reports said Coburn would seek a meeting with Reid, presumably to apologize.

But before that could happen, Coburn elaborated on his view of Reid.

“I think he’s done more damage to the Senate than any majority leader,” he said.

“Seventy-five times he’s used filling the tree and filing cloture to eliminate debate, to eliminate the idea that the Senate was supposed to force consensus.”

COBURN “Filling the tree” refers to a sanitychallenged practice in which a Senate parliamentarian diagrams multiple pending amendments together before any one is dealt with. The diagrams being called “amendment trees.”

Reid’s spokesperson noted that if Coburn wants to apologize, he should know the way to Reid’s office, because it will be the second such Coburn apology. Last year, Coburn told a C-SPAN interviewer that Reid is “incompetent and incapable of carrying on the tradition of the Senate.” In a later Senate speech on fiscal matters, Coburn apologized: “As an individual, he has a very difficult time, and I understand that, and … I ask his forgiveness.”

Obamacare success (except here) While news coverage has focused on the website problems of the national health insurance program, state exchanges have gone merrily ahead enrolling consumers who find health insurance.

Nationally, the state exchanges had enrolled 395,807 by Oct. 31.

Among state-run Western programs, Colorado has enrolled 19,164 and Washington has enrolled 48,995. Oregon, which has enrolled more than 56,000, has reduced its uninsured population by 10 percent.

Officials of the Nevada website, being run by the Sandoval administration, have not posted running tallies. A spokesperson said, “Nevada Health Link will report enrollment numbers on December 16, 2013 and April 1, 2014.” However, figures from state tracker Advisory.com say Nevada lags far behind other states after enrolling 1,757. It is not known why Nevada is not releasing numbers. Gov. Brian Sandoval opposes the program.

As for the states whose governors have refused to host exchanges and are having them run by the federal government, U.S. News columnist Leslie Marshall wrote, “This week, we hear Republicans say that the Affordable Care Act has failed because the website crashed. The website crashed when Twitter first launched. Has that failed?” Twitter, in fact, has become so known for crashes that Business Insider once ran an article headlined “Twitter Explains Why Twitter Crashes All The Time.”

The Nevada website encountered some early problems, but glitches have been reduced substantially. Kaiser Health News has reported that “it takes less than 20 seconds to start shopping for a health plan on the Nevada, Colorado and Connecticut exchanges where you can get a list of plans and prices by entering your zip code, age and annual income.” But other Western states appear to have done a better job of missionary work in areas populated by the working poor than Nevada. Cover Oregon sent notices to hundreds of thousands of people, using lists of state agencies with assistance programs.

In the Las Vegas Sun, a letter to the editor from Michelle Holzman read, “I am currently on a [Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996]-guaranteed plan that costs me $565 a month. If I get sick and need an urgent visit, mammogram or other OB-GYN services, I have to drive to Las Vegas from Pahrump. That’s going to change. I enrolled in a [ACA] plan that will save me more than $200 a month and provide local urgent visit and OB-GYN services in Pahrump.”

Road battle Proposed freeway fires passions State officials are trying to route a massive Canada-to-Mexico freeway project through Nevada to the Pacific by Northwest, and local officials are Dennis Myers trying to have it routed through the Truckee Meadows.

“The overall goal is [for Reno Sparks markets] to have access to Canada,” said state highway department spokesperson Scott Magruder.

He said at the moment, though, most of the attention is on opening Phoenix markets to Las Vegas.

“We need another north/south connector.”

Ron Smith Sparks City Council “These are the largest metropolitan areas west of the Mississippi that do not have a north/south interstate,” he said.

But not everyone is enamored of the project.

“I really loathe the idea of a new interstate highway through Nevada on many levels,” said Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada director Bob Fulkerson. “It’s a throwback to the ’50s when nobody gave a shit about habitat loss, migratory routes impacts, water and air pollution. Just mow over anything in the way of the highway, destroy anything else for the sake of the dollar bill. This looks like a freaking disaster in the making.”

In Arizona, where planning for the project is more advanced than in Nevada, there is considerable opposition.

“It would create new areas of population, destroying wild areas that don’t need to be developed at this point,” Sierra Club Rincon Group spokesperson Russell Lowes told a hearing in Tucson.

The Sparks City Council last month voted unanimously to support the freeway on a Truckee Meadows route. Councilmember Ron Smith said, “We need another north south connector,” and said the route would promote economic growth in the valley. Asked if he had looked at the impact on the ecology, he said he would expect the Nevada Wildlife Department and similar agencies to examine those issues.

Reno City Councilmember Jenny Brekhus suggested it is too early to commit to such a project about which so little is known, particularly because other highway projects, including a northwest connector, are more advanced in planning. She did say, however, that such a project, if completed, would relieve congestion on I-5 in California, though a Fernley-area route would be less disruptive of existing communities. And she said, “We have a big distribution industry here” in Washoe County that would benefit.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal has editorialized, “Unfortunately, Nevada has made its share of work on the I-11 project a decidedly low priority. That has to change. We must invest in our freeways so tourists can get here and commerce can come through here. Economic growth will follow. … At a time when our economy needs every bit of help it can get, infrastructure that can speed travel between these major markets would no doubt provide such help.”

One southern activist said the newspaper is wrong that the state has made the project a low priority.

Rather, she believes, the state has tried to keep the project low key and below the radar so the public will not become aroused as it did when the MX missile system—another project that involved huge swaths of construction across the state—was fought and defeated by residents.

It appears likely that the project, if approved, would require a gas tax hike in Clark County. If a similar levy were required in Washoe, Brekhus said, it would face rough sledding. “We’re taxed, I think, 23 cents on every gallon in Washoe County,” she said. “I would have a really hard time supporting a gas tax increase.”

Nevada highway federal programs manager Sondra Rosenberg said, “There’s no funding identified for any of this.”

Fulkerson directed attention to the fragile ecology of land between Las Vegas and Reno and north of Reno to the Oregon border.

“There are major environmental impacts when you put a small dirt road to bring a drill rig in for an exploratory project,” he said. “To

talk about doing something an order of magnitude millions of time that size in the heart of Nevada, cutting off migratory bird routes, elk and antelope routes, would be a major disruption to the ecosystem for a make-work project and some corporate welfare for construction companies that are lining up their lobbies to get this done before the public knows about it. … We can’t go on paving over land, water and wildlife habitat so a handful of people can make a heck of a lot of money.”

A website funded jointly by the Nevada and Arizona highway departments contains language that critics say has an upbeat tone that suggests the proposed interstate is not being assessed, that officialdom has already decided the freeway should be built: “I-11 is intended to be a new high-capacity, multimodal transportation facility connecting the metropolitan areas of Las Vegas and Phoenix. If extended north of Las Vegas and south of Phoenix, this facility has the potential to become a major north-south transcontinental corridor through the intermountain West.”

Rosenberg BREKHUS disputes the notion that the language means the decision has been made, though she conceded, “We do see a need for it. That’s why we’re doing the study.” Nevertheless, she said, “We are assessing.” (Italics represent her vocal emphasis.)

In April 2012, U.S. House members from Western states, including three Nevadans, signed a letter that said, “The completion of this corridor would provide total commerce connectivity between the United States, Mexico and Canada in the intermountain West, which is vital to the continued economic growth of the region. With increasing port developments in western Mexico and existing congestion on west coast transportation facilities, increased north-south capacity is a high priority and was designated as such in the 1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation Equity Act.” The Nevada signatories were Mark Amodei, Shelley Berkley and Joe Heck. An “Interstate 11 Caucus” was formed in the House that included all Nevada House members but five of nine Arizona members.

Fulkerson said the economic benefits will be for a narrow part of the community.

“The economic growth is not going to be spread out,” he said.

“It’s going to be concentrated. The sacrifice and the impact doesn’t justify the cost.”

One concern of critics is “generated traffic,” also known as “induced demand,” that could add to Reno/ Sparks congestion. It’s a phenomenon discovered in the 1960s, when construction or expansion of highways led to more people driving and more traffic congestion instead of less. It’s considered a contributor to urban sprawl.

The transportation and construction industries like to call it the myth of generated traffic, but traffic engineers try to anticipate its effects and plan for them. The Institute of Transportation Engineers defines it this way: “Generated traffic is the additional vehicle travel that results from a transportation improvement.”

Bob Fulkerson Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada In one California study, “60 percent to 90 percent of increased road capacity [was] filled with new traffic within five years. Total vehicle travel increased 1 percent for every 2 percent to 3 percent increase in highway lane miles. Researchers conclude, ‘it appears that adding road capacity does little to decrease congestion because of the substantial induced traffic.’”

But Rosenberg said the impact on Truckee Meadows traffic is difficult to determine, given the fact that the route may not be through the Reno/Sparks area.

Fernley is also a candidate route, she said, and whether there will be more or less congestion “will depend very much on where the specific alignment is and that’s way down the road.”

The I-11 issues echo some of those—commerce versus quality of life—that unfolded when planning for Interstate 80 was going on in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Businesspeople, particularly the casinos, wanted the freeway right through the center of town, alongside the railroad tracks, and most community leaders echoed them. U.S. Rep. Walter Baring led an effort that killed that “Third Street route” in an effort to move the freeway north of Reno to thenundeveloped areas, but the casinos regrouped and won approval of a “Seventh Street route” that was eventually constructed and put exit ramps near the casino district. Green groups campaign for idle-free schools

Go to any elementary, middle or high school the area—or anywhere for that matter—around quitting time, and you’re guaranteed to see many cars with parents inside them, sitting and idling all around the school, awaiting their by Sage Leehey children, especially when it’s cold outside. The school buses will be there doing the same, often. sagel@ It does make sense. No one wants to wait in a cold car—or a hot car in news re view.c om the warmer months. But non-profit GREENevada is working to show people that it isn’t worth the costs. GREENevada is a collaboration among nine nonprofit organizations, according to Envirolution community services director David Gibson.

“Cars emit a bunch of different pollutants from nitrous oxide to carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide to particulate matter, so having all those cars idling outside of the schools creates bad air quality for all the students inside the school,” Gibson said. “And then the larger issue related with that is climate change and reducing those impacts.”

And on economic note, reducing the amount of idling cars and the time they idle can also save money.

“It also just wastes gas,” Gibson said. “Every individual who is sitting out there idling can save money by not idling when they’re picking their kids up from school.”

The idea for an idle-free schools campaign originated at the organization’s recent fall retreat of students and teachers in the area. At the retreat, there were several special guests from the community, including Julie Hunter from the Washoe County Air Quality Management Division. Gibson said that Hunter mentioned that she wanted to start a campaign like this at all the schools in the district but did not have the resources for it. From there, GREENevada has taken on this project and plans to work with district students on it.

“We’re recruiting schools right now to lead a pilot program where the students will be getting a baseline tally of how many cars and buses are For more information idling and how long. He also said that GREENevada will be working with both the school district and the Air Quality Management Division to create signs at schools.

These may be formal signs or something made by students. They’re also planning to make bumper stickers and things of that nature to encourage more parent involvement. GREENevada is also addressing the concerns about idling buses.

“Bus drivers don’t want to sit on a cold bus if they’re waiting outside the school for a half hour, so we’re going to see if there’s opportunity in providing seat heaters for the school buses, so they can turn the bus off and still be warm,” Gibson said. “We want to work with all the stakeholders instead of just saying, across the board, you can’t idle anymore, because we understand that there are health or safety issues with that, particularly in the winter time.” Ω OPINION

Emma’s decided to memorize the collective names for animals. A bask of crocodiles, a glaring of cats, a rhumba of rattlesnakes, a memory of elephants. She imagines herself on Jeopardy: “What is a leap of leopards?” she answers, pleased, as the unsure smarter ones wait for the category to be swept. She will not be champion; this is her one useless talent.

She begins to create her own collective nouns: a crack of ceramics, a blistering of shoes, a speak of secrets—acknowledging and allowing for absurd amounts of alliteration. It’s an exuberance of Emmas.

“Alex, how many winners will there be in the RN&R short-fiction contest?”

This year there are four, and here’s why: Each of our editors pick their favorite 10 stories out of the mountain of entries and assign each one a point value. First, we look for agreement among the stories the editors select. This year, Jenny Pickerell’s story landed on every editor’s list; hers was the only one. Then we added the points up from the other stories that two editors liked best, and that’s how we got second, third, and fourth places.

Every year, it’s peculiar how a theme arises out of seemingly random entries. How did this year become the year where someone died in more than half the submissions? Maybe it was the economy, maybe it was the government shutdown, but one thing’s for sure, there were a lot of people striving for sad.

Fortunately, we’re an upbeat bunch around here, so we survived the judging.

Congratulations to all you winners, and thanks to everyone who took part. It really feels like an honor that you’d send us these little bits of your souls.

The Reverend Cottonelle Mather, pastor of the Church of Hope Restored, was despondent as she drank her Saturday morning coffee. After twenty-five years of preaching, her sermons, of late, lacked inspiration and oomph. She exhausted the scriptures for new ideas, and answers to her prayers were not forthcoming. She still believed in Psalm 42:5, “Why are thou cast down … hope thou in God.” She turned the TV on to Turner Classics, and she watched three movies: The Flim-Flam Man, Burt Lancaster’s The Rainmaker, and The Music Man. Sometimes you find hope in all the right places.

You were dead if one broke, and dead if you didn’t deliver, so no reason to dwell about either, the end was the same.

Today, the local narc dog and her handler were heading his way. “Koochie koo, doggy!” They hated that, and the handler steered the dog away.

He headed for the green exit - nothing to declare. “Just visiting Uncle!” He’d be back again, visiting “Uncle Sam,” in a week.

His grandmother was terrified of that tree and made her family promise to never bury her there. “That tree ate my husband,” she told Niall. “There was nothing in his grave but tree roots!”

But Niall’s parents said Nana’s tumor had made her talk crazy, so she was buried in the family plot, beside the tree. As the gravediggers covered the grave, Niall thought he saw roots touching her coffin.

Inexplicably, some chemical in Laura Seller’s body repelled insects: mosquitos, flies, gnats, even chiggers. As a child, she received not a single bite. As an adult, Laura was studied by researchers from bug repellant manufacturers worldwide all attempting to isolate the ingredient that protected her from creatures of dermal destruction.

One evening, Laura found herself inside a convenience store being robbed at gunpoint. Police

surrounded the building. TV stations set up for remote broadcasts. The situation grew tense, the store was rushed and Laura was accidentally killed by a member of the SWAT team.

“Place your hands in soil, it takes worries away...” The elder suggested. Young Mary was slightly humored, but at this point she’d eat tree bark for a shift. She had sobbed enough; the anguish of sleepless nights had left her fettered. If all it took was squeezing dirt to re-charge her batteries, she’d play along.

After planting flowers, weeding and breathing fresh air, Mary started feeling better. Ache of mind, gone. Burning stomach, subsided.

Although the divorce papers still slapped the table, being sued for full custody by a “stranger” didn’t seem as overwhelming.

The crackly sound waves of the morning report fill the kitchen with a depressive ambiance. Corruption, catastrophe, and calamity force their way through the ear drums of a middle aged woman standing by the window, cleaning sticky golden brown maple syrup off the breakfast cutlery. Her son is outside, happily running among the brilliant falling leaves. His smile spreads clear across his face; his laughter pierces the crisp fall air. She watches him, letting his warm aura of innocence find its way to her heart. And for a moment, all is right in the world.

The picture could be viewed from the pool, the private gate or the obvious spot.

A string quartet of beige musicians, instruments and music stands glued upon a white mat. The cellist knew the artist couldn’t be

a musician. The bow holds alone were embarrassing.

“Beethoven, naturally! See that passion?”

He slipped her a sly smile just as his wife emerged from the study.

“I’ve always hated that,” the wife said.

As proof, a few days later it was replaced by a large silk screening of a parrot.

Returning from WWII Jackie had brought her roses and a proposal, “Yes”. He missed the big parades but participated in them every year afterwards, “Handsome Jack”, she thought, tall and handsome. Gone in 05, a stroke, giving up and pulling the plug. Three kids, a lawyer, a doctor and Jackie Jr. the kindest of them all, here now holding her hand, the others probably playing golf.

It wasn’t a particularly exceptional street fair- in fact it bordered on a yard sale. I glanced dispassionately at a booth before doing a double take, entering the menagerie of crocheted figures. I couldn’t believe how much love had been poured into these adorable little creations.

“How much for this little guy?”

“Him?” The woman came over to check. “Oh, ten dollars.”

“You’re buying it?” She sounded surprised as I pulled out my wallet and handed her a ten.

“Yes, he…” I hesitated, smiling.

“He looks exactly like a toy dinosaur I had growing up.”

I wake up to water dripping on my head and yell, “Dad, there’s another crack in the cave.” But he just replies, “I’ll just seal it up with some grass.” You can tell that this is a reoccurring event because it looks like a garden on the roof.

Our cave is so out of date that the next dinosaur that tries to get in is going to get in. So I keep telling my dad to buy a new cave. But he says it’s good for the next ten years, if we live that long.

need to join a 12-step program,” Ben Wilborn says a little sheepishly, while perched atop a stool in his industrial studio. The “problem” Wilborn is confessing to have is not a common addiction, and there’s no chance of lung cancer or liver failure from it.

What Wilborn is referring to is his favorite part of the process involved in the career he’s been pursuing for the last four years.

“Cocobolo Rosewood from Central America is my favorite,” he says. “It’s got a crystalline sound and smells amazing.”

Wilborn’s self-described addiction is to wood. And the selection of it is the aspect he finds most rewarding in his guitar-building profession as a luthier. It’s the satisfaction derived from the challenge of getting the wood to sing just the right note his client is looking for. And, as it turns out, there are plenty of different kinds to choose from—as the stacks of thin planks lining the back of his studio’s wall confirm.

“There’s spruce, cedar, red wood—those are the best top woods,” he says, explaining that, ideally, he looks for soft wood sourced from coniferous trees.

Wilborn’s acoustic guitar designs are the Dreadnought, L-style, Orchestra, Parlor or custom. Thanks to word of mouth, as well his recent success at the three-day guitar festival Healdsburg, in Santa Rosa, Calif., at which he sold six guitars on the spot and took down orders for four more, Wilborn currently has a five-month waiting list. And that’s saying something because base-price for his guitars is in the $3,500-$3,800 range.

The passion Wilborn has for his art, which is a better word than “job” to describe his profession—is obvious. Childlike excitement exudes from him, and he carries a relaxed ease that is hard to find in most adults when you get them talking about work. But Wilborn says he wasn’t always this way. In fact, he describes his former self as anxiety ridden and high-strung.

So what changed? He restrung his own strings—and today he plays to a different tune,

thanks to the decision to quit his former job as a carpenter. Building kitchens and bathrooms had only stressed him out, with the constant worry of meeting unrealistic deadlines and construction demands. The job, which he held for 10 years, was never something he envisioned for himself—he just sort of fell into it as a means of financial support in order to pursue his first love of music. The lifelong musician, who’s been playing stringed instruments such as violin and guitar since he was six, was the leading member of local Americana band Lazy Eights.

Wilborn always knew music would be involved in his life, he just didn’t know what form it would take. He went to college at Berklee School of Music in Boston to pursue film scoring, a path which he ultimately decided not to take any further than a diploma, but which led to connections he found beneficial. In Boston, he met fellow student and notable musician Gillian Welch, when they played in Polka Masters together, a bluegrass band. Welch later became Wilborn’s first celebrity endorsement.

Gui t a r he ro After college, Wilborn came back to Reno, his hometown since the age of 2, and immersed himself in music by means of the Lazy Eights until the group disbanded in 2001. It was then that Wilborn fell back on his second natural talent of construction—after a friend asked him to help out with a recently purchased building’s renovation.

“I accidentally got into it,” Wilborn says of his past life. “My friend asked for my help because he said I was ‘handy and could make things.’”

That natural knack—potentially inherited from his father who was a wood worker and cabinet builder himself—made the decision to

follow down the construction path the practical next step. But Wilborn always felt like something was missing.

“Part of me went dormant until I figured out I could bring my craftsmanship and passion together full circle,” he explains.

The discovery came about with the birth of his first child. With the need to be quiet around the house with a sleeping baby, Wilborn searched for a hobby he could do quietly, and so he bought a book on how to build a guitar. Since then, he’s been hooked.

“I was completely smitten,” Wilborn says.

“I knew it wasn’t a hobby. I wanted to do it full-time.”

And as for that first piece of art, he sold it for a couple hundred dollars to someone looking for a “beater” guitar. That customer has since become one of Wilborn Guitar’s biggest fans, and he views that “beater” as a collector’s item.

“This is his very first guitar,” says Brad Jones, Wilborn’s first customer. “I’m keeping it as an investment because if he keeps going the way he’s going, that guitar is going to be worth something someday. It’s a goal of mine to get every model I can from this builder.”

Jones isn’t the only customer to believe Wilborn has yet to reach his career pinnacle.

David Grantham thinks Wilborn is working towards a lifelong achievement award.

“I feel like I hit a gold mine with Ben,” Grantham says. “He asks what my needs are and can deliver incredible instruments. I struggle with tendonitis, so I need a guitar I can play without getting tired from muscle strain. He built me a speed machine. I can play effortlessly and for long durations. … He’s building at a very high level of quality.”

The quality of Wilborn’s guitars isn’t simply the aesthetic and attention to detail (aesthetic in terms of the natural colors of the wood—there are no skull and crossbones etched into this woodwork). The crafter leaves his mark on each one.

“There’s some part of me in that instrument,” Wilborn says. “I can pay attention to the construction of the instrument in a way that is not possible in a factory. It’s a genuine thing. … It’s the difference of buying something off-the-rack or having it designed to fit you.”

With his art still in the relative beginning phases, Wilborn says that financially, he may just be “making ends meet” at the moment, but he’s yet to regret the life-changing decision.

“I get to hang out with my kids—and it’s simple, honest work,” Wilborn concedes. “I make ends meet, but I feel very rich.”

As for his advice to others that need to find a little inner peace in life? Wilborn says to quit your day job. But be forewarned, that doesn’t mean hanging out on a golf course.

“This wasn’t a half-assed venture for me, I work a lot of hours,” Wilborn admits. “But you’ve just got to go for it—if it works it does, and if it doesn’t you do something else.” Ω

The building has four floors, each with a long hallway and several bedrooms on each side (36 rooms total). Currently, the rooms are used during overnight workshops that last between two and five days. Past workshops have included narrative illustration and painting.

“Everyone stays here during workshops, and it helps because you don’t defocus,” Melhop says. “It’s really quite fun.”

Melhop envisions the top room and workspace on the fourth floor functioning as a year-round artist residence.

She’s also working to bring in global artists, including a Danish filmmaker coming in February. Two English artists worked in the building last July.

The opening for the next round of 2013-2014 exhibits is Nov. 8. Photographer Nolan Preece’s work will take over the main gallery. Several of Preece’s photos capturing aspects of St. Mary’s renovations are already hung in the building. The new exhibit will display the results of Preece’s

“Nolangram” process, in which he uses substances like soot and oil to create patterns on glass, and then photographs the results. The outcomes are colorful, abstract and surreal.

Also opening is work by painter Nate Clark and sculptor/painter Nancy Peppin.

Melhop notes that Clark, who is also this year’s emerging artist, is “definitely one to watch.” Clark, a Washington native who attended University of Nevada, Reno’s bachelor of fine arts program, creates paintings focused on shapes, pairing sharp, straight lines with curved ovals. The artist is also an avid cyclist—he’s crossed the country solely by bike, and the themes

of movement are present in his paintings, which resemble the shapes and colors seen quickly while passing by on a moving vehicle.

Peppin’s series, called “24 DiaDeLosMuertos San Tunike” deals with the passage of time, using the art of the Spanish tableau to convey the impact of a lifespan—or perhaps, the lack of—on Twinkies.

Within a tableau, she situates small skeletons, spiders and other Dia de los Muertos imagery around the dessert snack.

Peppin is a graphic designer and animator at International Gaming Technology.

“Even when the tableaus are on display for more than a year, there’s no mold on the Twinkies,” Melhop laughs.

And an entire display featuring Nevada artists, facilitated by Nevada artists as part of a collective Dusty Roads exhibit, will also be up in the Nevada artists gallery.

“There’s a lot of artists inspired by the area,” Melhop says. “We hope to bring more of that to St. Mary’s, and also look beyond just Nevada.” Ω

I’m a pizza snob. There are three things that make a great pizza: the crust, the crust and the crust. Topping are a personal preference—pineapple on pizza should be illegal—and the sauces vary and are usually good if they are made with fresh ingredients in a simple way. There are two things at South Creek that got my attention: the pizza oven and the fact that everything is handmade with local products whenever possible. The oven bakes them at 900 degrees, and it usually takes less than three minutes to cook.

The oven is 90 percent of the success of the pie. This Ferrera woodburning, brick oven from Naples is considered one of the most reliable, authentic Neapolitan brick ovens in the world. Quick baking creates a thin crust and a nice cook on the toppings,

with a soft middle. High temperature produces flavors that can’t be achieved by slow cooking.

Ian Madan, Mike’s son, is the pie master. He got his schooling in the art of Napolitano pie-making under the tutelage of creative chef Mark Estee at Campo. Now, Ian is putting his own signature on pies like the traditional Naples-style Margherita ($14)—tomatoes, his own mozzarella, basil, olive oil and sea salt—simple.

The pizzas are all 12 inches ($12-$21), with a thin but crisp on the outside, moist on the inside crust—high marks on this. Ian makes his crust from “00” flour imported from Italy ideal for pizza dough for two reasons, it’s finely ground, and it has lower gluten helping create a lighter crust. Then the dough is cold-fermented for 48 hours, this is called retarding, slowing down the fermentation producing a soft, chewy mid crust.

Salads ($6-$9) and small plates ($5-$11) are offered. I tried the Fire Roasted Fresh Green Bean with bread crumbs and chili oil prepared in the wood oven melding the tastes of a hint of smoke with a slightly crisp texture held together by the bread crumbs and a nice bit of heat on the finish—very original.

I was there for the pizza and had the Pear-A-Dice ($18) with sliced pears, diced Niman Ranch bacon, fresh mozzarella, smoked blue cheese and topped with arugula and a drip of honey. What a symphony of flavors hitting every note from the slightly sweet to the grand crescendo of the smoky bite of the blue cheese. The fresh arugula greenery atop, dripped with honey, added more texture and an ever-so-slight hint of sweetness complementing the pears and not interrupting the savory, melodic flow of the morsels over the tong. It was flavor imagination at its best.

The simple wine list ($7-$55) has a few by-the-glasses ($8-$10) with good varietals and a fun, eclectic assortment of beers, international to micro brews ($5-$14). I tried the Crabbie’s Original Alcoholic Ginger Beer ($6) over ice with a lemon slice.

It has a sweet, spicy, almost “hot” taste with a dry finish. It’s a very fresh and very alluring drink, 4.8 percent alcohol content, enjoyably different.

I got the feeling that I wasn’t just getting a pizza a South Creek, I was getting an artist’s creation in the form of food. Ω

Bad Grandpa

Ender’s Game Author Orson Scott Card appears to be some sort of pigheaded loser, as some of his recent publicized statements have indicated. That doesn’t keep his novel Ender’s Game and its sequels from being somewhat prophetic and intuitive when it comes to modern technology. It just makes him a big dick now. Hey Orson, go have an asshole tea party with Mel Gibson and by Woody Allen.

Bob Grimm OK, back to the film review. The story has a protagonist named Ender Wiggin (Asa bgrimm@ newsre view.c om Butterfield), a genius boy and master of futuristic videogames and strategies. He’s targeted by a military leader (crusty and craggy Harrison Ford) as the savior of the human race, somebody who can save Earth from a second attack by an alien insect species called the Formics.

Ender enters into a training program where he is fast tracked to the point of commanding his own ragtag group of teens, including True Grit’s Hailee Steinfeld, through elaborate exercises. One involves a zero gravity room where they get to play laser tag with paralyzing rays, and the other being a large video game where they perform alien species annihilation scenarios.

The movie has some impressive special effects, and some great ideas at its core. What it doesn’t have is an engaging performance by its central actor. Butterfield just doesn’t cut it as Ender, opting for a mostly quiet intensity that results in boring stretches. Steinfeld acts circles around him, and he is clearly outmatched.

Also, something about this movie feels vastly abbreviated. I can’t help but think this franchise would’ve fared better as an HBO series, or some other network miniseries. The finale feels tacked on, super condensed and rushed. The character of Ender is required to switch emotional modes in a way that is too quick, and it feels false.

Card’s “One who can save us all!” premise, besides its biblical ramifications, also acted as a definitive prelude to such current phenomena as the Harry Potter series and The Matrix. The master gamer aspect of Ender was conceptualized when modern man was just saying goodbye to Colecovision and ushering in the age of Nintendo. The first Playstation was nearly a decade away.

So, I’m not denying that Ender’s Game was a masterfully intuitive notion as a novel.

I’m just not impressed with the muddled effort director Gavin Hood hath wrought.

The movie, although visually breathtaking at times, is a flat, joyless affair. I couldn’t help but think of Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers, another avenue for bug-like aliens attacking Earth, and how much fun that was.

Ender’s Game has a lot of moping and routine teen angst in it.

Ford is actually my favorite thing in the movie. He manages to mix in an occasionally warm, even funny moment as the determined engineer of Ender’s fate.

There’s plenty of that old, raspy Ford of his later career, but just a touch of Han Solo. Watching him in Ender’s, I found myself rooting for a deal with J.J. Abrams soon to have Ford reprise his Star Wars role.

His work here would act as a nice bridge back to that franchise.

On the more confusing side, Viola Davis is on hand as Major Gwen Anderson, some sort of counselor/protector of Ender, constantly at Ford’s side and telling him his plan sucks. I got the feeling Hood and even Davis weren’t quite sure on the arc for this character, and she virtually disappears for long stretches of the film.

There’s some typical army barracks bullying involving a character named Bonzo (Moises Arias) that doesn’t feel fully realized.

I got the impression that there should’ve been more to this character’s story, but given the feature-length running time, certain aspects of that story have been jettisoned.

Ender’s Game is not a bad movie. It has many respectable aspects, but it’s a movie marbled with dullness. It’s supposed to be the start of a franchise, but I have a sinking feeling the franchise ends here for now. Ω

Johnny Knoxville has tried to parlay his Jackass fame into an acting career, and he hasn’t exactly been setting the world on fire.

So, because huge paychecks are tempting, he has returned to the Jackass well numerous times with three official movies, and his body has paid a tremendous toll. The man has thrown himself into the path of buffalos and bulls to score good laughs and, oh man, has he gotten those good laughs. As big as those checks can be, internal bleeding and broken limbs lose their luster after a while. So now we get this, a sort of Jackass movie that has a narrative mixed into hidden camera stunts. It’s very much in the tradition of Borat. Knoxville gets to play one part for the film, that of Irving Zisman, an over-80 letch of an old man that has shown up in past Jackass skits. He’s taking his grandson (Jackson Nicoll) across country, leading to some funny stunts that manage to shock a few. The highlight would be Nicoll dressed in drag and dancing to “Cherry Pie” at a beauty pageant, a moment when he basically steals the movie from Knoxville. Not as outrageous as the other Jackass films, but a nice way to keep the franchise going without destroying Knoxville’s body.

Birth of the Living Dead

This isn’t your typical horror documentary. It has George A. Romero as its subject, with his enthusiastic participation, and it examines the significance of his landmark zombie film Night of the Living Dead. The movie focuses on the tumultuous period in which the film was made, its almost accidental emergence as a civil rights film, the business people in Pittsburgh who put the movie together, and more. Romero makes so many revelations, you’ll want to go back and watch Dead again for the hundredth time. Many of the actors in the movie, including the doomed brother at the film’s beginning, were part of the film crew. After the credits, there’s a wonderful little 2007 interview with Bill Hinzman, who died in 2012. Hinzman played the legendary graveyard zombie at the beginning of the movie.

He reveals that his zombie was initially just part of the ensemble, and his appearance near the end of the film (that wonderful walkingaround-in-a-circle moment) was initially his only involvement. Romero liked Hinzman’s zombie act in the mass attack scene so much that he asked him to play the very first zombie in the film. That’s the sort of info that makes this doc so cool. (This is available for rent on iTunes and Amazon.com, and not playing in local theaters).

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2

This is animation done with all the style and grace of a spastic colon saturated with hot sauce. While the first film in this series had a reasonable amount of charm, this one goes haywire from its start right until the finish line. Bill Hader returns as the voice of Flint, the overly excited inventor who, in the first movie, managed to use a crazy invention to inundate his hometown with giant food. Now, the machine has gone nuts, creating a race of living food including cheeseburger spiders and dolphin bananas. The film boasts an intolerably frantic pace, with a plotline that’s scattered beyond reasonability.

It’s hard to follow, but it does have the occasional fart and poop joke to make the kids laugh.

The only character I managed to enjoy was a jittery monkey trying to put out a sparkler, and that accounts for about 30 seconds of the film.

Don’t waste your time and, trust me, your kids won’t like it either.

The Counselor

You would think a movie written by Cormac McCarthy (No Country For Old Men, The Road) and directed by Ridley Scott (Alien) would be amazing, but that is not the case with this bore-fest. Michael Fassbender, so good in Scott’s Prometheus, plays a character simply named Counselor, a lawyer who gets involved in drug trafficking and puts himself and others in jeopardy. Cameron Diaz plays the girlfriend of his partner in crime (a wild-haired Javier Bardem), and she’s just a terrible actress in this movie. She’s required to be bad, and you can feel her trying to be bad at every turn. Let’s just say she’s very bad at being bad. Scott puts together some intense, violent scenes that feel like they belong in a movie where the actors aren’t required to deliver long, boring, unrealistic monologues. Brad Pitt is OK as some sort of drug dealer sage, but he’s starting to look a lot like Mickey Rourke. (He actually references him during one of his speeches.) Scott almost manages a good movie out of this mess, but Diaz and the preachy script prevail in badness.

Escape From Tomorrow

Tom Hanks plays Richard Phillips, captain of the MV Maersk Alabama cargo ship.

While delivering relief goods in 2009, his ship encounters Somali pirates who could give a rat’s ass about charity and try multiple times to board his ship. They eventually succeed, putting into play a crazy hostage drama that results in Phillips being taken aboard a space capsule-sized lifeboat with his captors. Hanks gives an expert performance that is just another notch in a great career. Fortifying the story with a terrifying yet somehow oddly sympathetic performance would be Barkhad Abdi as Muse, the pirate leader. One of the major strengths of this film is the relationship between Phillips and Muse, one that basically starts with Muse informing Phillips that he is no longer the captain of his own ship. Director Paul Greengrass mellows out on his shaky cam a bit, and delivers one of his best efforts yet.

Writer-director Randy Moore took a film crew and performers into multiple Disney parks and managed to film a fairly cohesive movie without permission to shoot, and without getting caught. Jim (Roy Abramsohn) finds out that he has lost his job during the movie’s opening scene on a Disney hotel balcony. Rather than tell the wife (Elena Schuber) he takes his family on one last day of park hopping that includes It’s a Small World, monorail rides and Epcot Center. Jim notices people coughing as he enters the park, and two French teens that seem strangely interested in him. Hallucinations, blackouts and eventual health issues ensue, leading to a lot of sequences that make no sense and an ending that is just strange. Watching the movie, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the scenes shot in the actual parks. Some green screen shots are obvious, but, for many scenes, Moore and his crew managed to get usable shots using the video functions in standard handheld cameras, making the crew look like tourists.

In this way, the movie is a marvel. As for the plotting, it suffers a bit from the guerilla format and has a lot of holes and inconsistencies. This is one of those movies where the history of the way the movie was made is far more interesting than the movie itself. Captain Phillips

Carrie

If you see this new 2013 version of Carrie starring Chloe Grace Moretz in the role that netted original star Sissy Spacek an Oscar nomination, you’ll probably walk away feeling it has more in common with Brian De Palma’s 1976 film than Stephen King’s sloppy first novel.

While Moretz gives it her best shot, and Julianne Moore is delightfully nasty as Carrie’s crazed mother, director Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don’t Cry) provides very little reason for remaking the movie. And don’t go to the film hoping for a faithful retelling of King’s novel because, other than a few plot elements thrown back in that were excised from the original film, this is a straightup remake of the De Palma movie. While some of the supporting cast is OK, the presence of Nancy Allen and John Travolta is sorely missed.

The Black Prom, a sequence so terrifying in the original film, is reduced to a glossy, silly mess in this version. Don’t waste your time.

Gravity

Finally, we get a big event movie that delivers the sort of thrills absent from too many large-scale movies promising big things this year. If you see this movie, you’re going to have a cinematic trip like no other.

This is what going to the movies is supposed to be about. I sound like a movie critic quote machine, and I don’t care. In her first true blue science fiction role since Demolition Man, Sandra Bullock puts herself through the ringer as Ryan Stone, an astronaut on her first space shuttle flight. Her mission commander, played by a charismatic and calming George Clooney, ribs her about her upset tummy as he flies around space in a jet pack while she works tirelessly on the Hubble. Space debris comes their way, and an incredible survival story/adventure is underway. Director Alfonso Cuaron has put together something here that will always be remembered and talked about. This is truly a landmark film.

Play the circuit Audrey Love A bittersweet pleasure of living in Reno is watching from afar as Renoites move away and then blossom elsewhere. We by Brad Bynum grow ‘em strong here, and if you move them from the desert into more bradb@ fertile soil, they tend to flourish. But news re view.c om a better, purer pleasure is when those expatriated Renoites come back to town, either permanently to start new businesses or nonprofit organization, or at least for a visit to share some of their new knowledge, experience and perspectives.

I was perusing the various online events calenders, looking for interesting upcoming events that were deserving of extra attention, when I noticed that the Holland Project, a local all-ages youth arts organization, had an upcoming workshop on how to build a synthesizer. This was intriguing unto itself, but my interest was compounded when I read that the workshop was going to be taught

by Audrey Love, a former RN&R photographer from a few years back. I had no idea she knew anything about synthesizers or how to build them so this was pleasantly surprising. I got her on the phone, and she told me about the slider synthesizer project she’ll be demonstrating.

“It’s an analog electronic device that makes noises,” she said. “It routes an electronic signal through an integrated circuit. It’s basically a

So if there’s lots of light hitting it, it’s really high pitched. If there’s not a whole lot of light hitting it, it’s really low pitched.”

The tiny device is constructed with an integrated LED light source.

Love now works in San Francisco for website called Instructables.com, which demonstrates how to do various DIY projects—woodworking, metal working and electronics.

“I figured this would be a really good electronics project to bring to Holland because it talks about almost every type of electronic component that you could use for a rudimentary electronics project,” said Love. “It’s a really good beginners’ project. … I’m excited to talk about the functionality of all these different electrical components, like resistors and capacitors—things that can be daunting if you don’t know what they are.”

She says a basic knowledge of electronics is especially useful for musicians.

“Have you ever had an amp die on you when you were on tour? You can’t be the Fonz every time and kick it, and hope it works. … If noise is something you’re interested in, here’s a really good opportunity to completely change the way you’ve made things sound in the past.”

Love and Clint Sleeper, another ex-Renoite, a musician and artist, currently attending graduate school at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, have a collaborative creative project called Robot V. Future. Many of their projects involve building custom musical instruments for art installations.

“We wanted these really noisy instruments that we could play either for personal performance or that other people could play for interactive performance, and the only way we could really get the outcome we wanted was to do it ourselves,” said Love. “So it became a lot of self education.”

The synthesizer workshop isn’t just for musicians, but for anyone interested in learning basic electronics.

“There’s a lot of interest in learning simple electronics, and this is hopefully a gateway drug into circuit building,” said Love. “It comes out of necessity. We can’t find what we want—better fucking build it.” Ω

he University of Nevada, Reno’s Performing Arts Series continues with a performance by vocal group musica intima. The Canadian ensemble is known for its warm and engaging stage presence, impeccable musicianship and unique perspective on ensemble singing. Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, the chamber choir has become an integral part of the city’s cultural fabric. In addition to an annual series of self-produced concerts, musica intima collaborates with other arts organizations and artists in Vancouver and has also been involved in recording projects with artists such as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, composer Owen Underhill and rock musician Matthew Good. The group regularly commissions and premieres works by Canada’s leading composers, including José Evangelista, Peter Hannan, Jocelyn Morlock, Jordan Nobles and Jeffrey Ryan. The ensemble has performed at some of Canada’s best known festivals and concert halls and has appeared at the Polyfollia Festival in France, Cork International Choral Festival in Ireland and the World Symposium on Choral Music in Denmark. musica intima has released seven recordings, including their Juno awardnominated debut album musica intima (1998) and the ensemble’s all-Canadian album into light (2010), which won a Western Canadian Music Award for Classical Album of the Year and garnered two Juno nominations. The group’s latest release is 20, which celebrates their 20th anniversary and acts as a “greatest hits” compilation. Western Nevada Musical Theater Company will present the popular musical based on Victor Hugo’s epic novel that tells the inspiring story of Jean Valjean, a man who serves 19 years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child.

Bitter and filled with resentment when he is released, he steals some silver from a saintly bishop. When the bishop intercedes to save him from returning to prison, Valjean repents and devotes himself to a life of selflessness and service. He breaks his parole, assumes a new identity and becomes a successful businessman, all the while evading capture by the relentless inspector Javert. Valjean rescues the child of a dying woman, Fantine, moves to Paris and raises her daughter as his own. When his adopted daughter, Cosette, falls in love with a revolutionary, Marius, Valjean is swept up in the Paris uprising of 1832. The play opens Friday, Nov. 8, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 24. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St., Carson City.

My husband and I both smoked pot regularly, but I quit several years ago, and he began smoking nightly. I kept encouraging him to quit because it makes him mentally disappear. He goes through periods when he doesn’t smoke—mostly because of my nagging—and then we’re able to connect and have a loving relationship. But he inevitably falls back on this nightly habit, and I become frustrated and resentful. Recently, I discovered a large stockpile of hidden video footage he’d taken of women’s booties. In one video, I was standing next to him, oblivious, as he videotaped the woman ahead of us in line. I was shocked that he was capable of this kind of disrespect. We had an emotionally-wrecked several weeks.

He slept on the couch, and I avoided him. I told him that if the nightly pot smoking and the butt videotaping were to persist, I’d have to move on. I was convinced that leaving was probably the best choice. But since I said this, he’s only smoked a couple of times, and we’ve been reconnecting. He says he’s not making any more videos because he saw how upset it made me. I love this guy, but am I deluding myself in thinking he can change?

When you marry a man, it isn’t because you’re looking to walk off into the sunset all by yourself while he’s lying facedown on your living room floor staring at an ant, realizing he totally gets what the ant is thinking.

Your husband—let’s call him “the old bong and chain”—is an addict. You may not think of him that way, because he probably doesn’t have a physical dependence on weed or running around town making butt-umentaries (say, in the way I have a physical dependence on break-a-tooth-black coffee). Probably what he has is a psychological addiction to checking out, instead of engaging emotionally, and he’s using these habits as transportation to get there.

To explain that further, an addiction treatment specialist I respect, Dr. Stanton Peele, in 7 Tools to Beat Addiction, writes, “When people turn to an experience, any experience, for solace to the exclusion of meaningful involvements in the rest of their lives, they are engaged in an addiction.” Another addiction therapist I respect, Dr. Frederick Woolverton, in Unhooked, explains that what all addictions have in common is a longing to avoid “legitimate suffering”—difficult emotions that are a normal part of being alive.

So, no, your husband’s saying no to butt cheeks and “only sometimes” to pot probably isn’t enough. These are just his preferred forms of checking out. To avoid simply replacing them with new forms, he needs to recognize that he’s been using them to duck feeling his feelings—maybe just in your marriage but maybe in other parts of his life, too. He also needs to commit to changing this, but not because you’re hassling him and it would be an even bigger hassle to get dumped by you.

(Change is especially tough for the emotion-averse.)

He needs to come to the conclusion that it’s worth it to tough it out and feel so he can connect with you on more than the pothead’s deep philosophical questions, “What does paisley sound like?” and “Are we out of Funyuns?”

It isn’t easy to go straight from the daily numb to “Hey, intensity, here I am,” and addicts are already in the habit of going straight to easy. Your husband might avoid setbacks by using a practice called “mindfulness meditation” as training wheels for living in the now instead of avoiding in the now. This form of meditation involves sitting or lying quietly, scanning your body with your mind and observing your thoughts and bodily sensations nonjudgmentally, as if they were scenery you’re passing in a car. I know this sounds airy-fairy.

But a growing number of solid studies—by molecular biologist Jon Kabat-Zinn and neuroscientist Richard Davidson, for example—find that regular mindfulness meditation diminishes stress and anxiety and dampens reactivity to emotional discomfort, helping people stand back a bit from their feelings instead of letting their feelings get them in a death grip.

It’s possible to do mindfulness meditation without a program, but the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Center for Mindfulness, founded by KabatZinn, has a link to programs and teachers around the U.S. and Canada (bit.ly/MBSRsearch). Taking a class in this could even be something you do together and might be the start of lots of things you do together. If he’s sincere about wanting you more than he wants to check out, you could soon have a husband you can count on to be there for you—and not just as a large, heavy, smoking object keeping the couch cushions from running into the street and getting hit by a car. spiritual traditions regard the ego as a bad thing. They imply it’s the source of suffering—a chronically infected pustule that must be regularly lanced and drained.

Fly away Trent Palmer Copter Kids owners Trent Palmer and Errol Kerr have what sounds like maybe the coolest jobs on the planet.

They go to exotic locations and fly radio-controlled planes that carry cameras, filming from above for things like movies, commercials and the military. They aren’t kids exactly, although they are young. Palmer is 25 years old. Check out their work at www.copterkidsllc.com.

Tell me a little about what you do, exactly.

I’m a low-range aerial cinematographer. What it is, we have a set of different platforms that are all unmanned aerial vehicles that we use to lift cameras and shoot for the film industry.

How did you come to get that job?

Really, it was a merger of my two passions.

Growing up, I’d always flown RC planes, and I got into RC helicopters as well, and then I also—kind of as a passion and a job—went into the film world. I started off making ski movies, worked my way into a bigger job with the company called FLF Films, which is out of Reno. The director over there took me under his wing and taught me everything I needed to know about film and the film world.

Simultaneously, I was learning to fly RC helies and building them. One day I was editing and saw video online of someone flying a helicopter with a camera on the front, the same camera I had, and I was like, ‘Why am I

not doing this?’ So I went out and built one. It took me a year to build my first one. The rest was kind of history. I got my partner, Errol Kerr, the ex-Olympian. He came out and did a test with me, and we put the video online, and it got 100,000 views in a week. And then the phone started ringing. We actually worked our first whole six months in 2010 with no business name, no card, no demo reel. It was all word of mouth, and people just kept hiring us. That’s how the name “Copter Kids” came about, was people seeing we were just these young kids coming out there, and we didn’t really have a name, so they called us “Copter Kids.” So we put an LLC on it, and called it the business name.

You film all over the world.

For the most part, the driveline for the helicopter is out of a kit heli. One you can buy at a hobby shop. The reason I do that is if anything goes wrong, I can run to a hobby shop and get parts for it. It keeps expenses down as far as the custom manufactured parts. We try to stick with all carbon fiber or aluminum. If we need metal, it’s aluminum, otherwise it’s carbon fiber. It’s the lightest weight and the strongest.

How much can it lift?

It depends on the size of our helies. Our bigger one can lift over 10 pounds on the camera tray. But the overall flying weight is at 35 pounds. I could fly at more, I just don’t like to because I like to keep it extremely overpowered and dynamic. Ω

We’re international. All of our kit will fit onto an airline with us. Anywhere that we can fly to, we can go and shoot.

Back in April, when the Boston Red Sox played their first home game after the Marathon bombing, their big stud muffin slugger David “Big Papi” Ortiz took the microphone before the first pitch and addressed the sold out crowd at Fenway Park. “This jersey we wear today, it doesn’t say Red Sox. It says Boston. This is our fucking city. And nobody’s going to dictate our freedom.

Stay strong.”

The joint went bananas. Right now, in light of the Sox winning the Series, that’s looking like the F-bomb of the year, maybe of the millenium (which, granted, is still only 13 years old).

• I had the chance to attend a Sox game at Fenway this summer while in Boston, and I must report, it was a stone cold gas. It was on Sunday, Sept.

15. It was the last game of the season between the hated Yankees and the Sox. I just sorta assumed that the game was sold out, as most games are at dinky little Fenway, especially Yankee games, but I strolled on down to the ball park anyway. For one thing, |

Yeah, these big cases. There’s eight of them so we definitely overwhelm some of the airlines, but luckily we fly United all the time, and the guys all know us. It’s pretty easy in Reno. Other airports, we’re definitely getting a little turned heads and people wondering.

The good thing is we’re “Premier” so they won’t pull our bags because we’re overweight or oversized situation. I kind of feel bad for everyone else on our planes because a lot of times I see a lot of bags get pulled.

And they won’t be ours.

the party scene around that joint is totally tremendous. Nothing but swingin’ sports bars and souvenir shops on two sides of the stadium. The area is absolutely rockin’ on game night.

And not, amazingly, just by old baseball farts with hair in their ears.

So I walk up to the box office at 5 o’clock. Not a soul in line. I figured it was closed. But I look again, and there is indeed one ticket clerk. I ask about tonight, expecting a scoff. He says, “Where do you want?” Crazy! I yank out the Visa and get a seat just above the third base dugout for 99 bucks.

Had an absolute ball at the ball game, even if I do hate the Yankees, and the Sox can go ahead and kiss my ass, too. But, still. Just an utterly splendid evening. And the food in that joint!

• Next season, the final four college football teams to play for the national championship will be decided by a group of 16 “experts.” One of those “experts,” it was recently announced, will be Condoleeza Rice. Wait. What?

Did the organizing committee think they needed a quasi-war criminal to round out the group? They were desperate for an XX set of chromosomes on the panel?

If that was the case, why pick the Mongoose? The University of Nevada, Reno’s ex-athletic director Cary Groth knows a thousand times more about quality college football than Condi. Hell, I’m a better choice than Condi!

Obviously, they wanted a “name” female on their little committee. So instead of choosing any of a dozen completely qualified national female sports columnists, they went with— Condi? Quite honestly, I still can’t figure this out. Haven’t the foggiest. This is Twilight Zone material, man! If you’re one of the other panelists, don’t you look at Rice during your first meeting and say to yourself, “What the hell is she doing here?” Ω
