Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

OK, let me say right up front, I’m not crazy. And you know who says things like that? Crazy people.

Back in April, my friend installed a home security system.

Cameras actually. Well, I got a little FOMO (fear of missing out), so I bought myself one.

It’s a Q-See system from Costco, and it cost me a couple of hundred bucks. This weekend, instead of mowing the lawn when I wasn’t doing homework, I completed the installation. Everything that happens on the property outside my house is now on camera. On the one hand, it’s pretty cool.

But it’s the other hand that makes me question my sanity. I’ve been reporting about creeping government fascism since long before Edward Snowden made his revelations. Here’s where I wrote in 2002—www.newsreview.com/ reno/conspiracy-theory/ content?oid=18628—about the program that became the Prism program that Snowden shared.

So as I watched the very concept of personal privacy erode, I got concerned. As I learned about extraordinary rendition and murder by drone, I got a little freaked. As I heard about case after case of illegal government spying getting a pass from the American people, I became more resigned. Privacy is gone. The government can and does make a record of every telephone conversation you have, or email or letter you send or receive. If you don’t believe we’re living in a dystopian society, like in the storybooks, then you’re simply not paying attention.

Now I can watch my house remotely over my cell phone and see when the UPS guy leaves Tshirts or electronics on my front porch. I can see his face. I can watch the dogs in the backyard.

If I’m not crazy, sometimes the world seems that way. Maybe that means this is a rational reaction to the situation.

But if I can look to see what’s going on at my house from here, what’s to stop Uncle Sam from watching the same movie? Exactly nothing. Will he?

I have no reason to believe he won’t, but then, I’ve got nothing to hide.

Re “War and Other Nonessential Functions” (Let Freedom Ring, Oct. 17): Brendan Trainor claims that polls show that “We the People” are tired of government employees paid better than “Joe the Plumber.” First: Which Joe? The one in Ocala, Florida? Or Amarillo, Texas? Or Whittier, Calif.?

Or Seattle, Wash.? Or Cypress, Texas? Or the myriad of others?

Or the Joe publicized by John McCain five-plus years ago? Possibly the latter ... who was better qualified to be “Joe the Plumper’s Helper” based on the jobs he was doing at the time. He is that “Joe the Plumber” who has since quit plumbing, dumped his stated goal of buying his own plumbing contracting business, and tried to start a singing career, become a target for corporate sponsorships, to be an author (with the professional novelist Thomas Tabback), to be a “war correspondent,” and finally to became a popular public speaker. He also was the one who did become a talking head in commercials reminding people to convert from analog to digital televisions and an ex-member of the Republican Party.

It is at best highly ingenious to compare Joe’s salary to that of all government employees, for example, Tom Frieden, MD, MPH, director of the Centers for Disease Control, has many well-documented years training in the fields of infectious diseases, public health, and epidemiology and especially known for his expertise in tuberculosis control. Considering that you get what you pay for, I certainly hope that Dr. Frieden is paid just a tad more than “Joe the Plumber!”

Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Large government vs. small government? Wrong question! The correct question? A government primarily focused on assisting and protecting the mass of the people vs. one primarily focused on the problems of the top 1 percent of individuals and Fortune 500 Companies. Yes,

the former will, by definition, be a larger government than the latter, but primarily because there are far more of us in the former category than in the latter!

Send the DMV business to insurance company? Sounds like an ideal solution for the insurance companies who perceive their record profit levels as being threatened.

Business licenses? If you research the history of most license systems, you will find that most were originated at the behest of their individual industries to protect their established members from competition. The alleged “threats to the community’s safety, health or morals” were identified not by any government, but by those businesses which were afraid of potential competition. Seeing no organized opposition from the public, government took those industries, with their presumed “special expertise,” at their word and did as requested.

Trainor has an interesting writing style, but if he is to become a regular columnist, it appears that he will probably require much supervision to insure that he avoids becoming simply a “yes-man” for the extreme right.

Leslie uses tired claim Re “Left Foot Forward” (To tell the truth, Oct. 10): Sheila Leslie uses the worn-out claim that Republicans give little concern to youth, minorities and the poor.

Now the one thing our leaders are good at is kicking the can down the road. They kick cans on Iran’s nuke issue, on border protection, on education issues, etc., and now on the debt.

And the game will start once more in about three months. Both teams play the game of kicking the can. They are world champions at the game.

If we compare time to dollars, and spent one dollar a second, it would take 31 years and some change, to spend $1 billion! To spend a trillion dollars worth of seconds, it will take 31,000 years, and no, that’s

If we took our own children, and ran up the limits on our credit cards, bought houses, boats, dope, etc. and then hand the bill too them, that is what this country is doing to the next how many generations to worry about?

Our leaders are borrowing from China, to pay the “vig” on the previous “vig” that was due, that some of our leaders began borrowing decades in the past.

So the honest question might be asked, which side is truly interested in our youth, minorities and poor?

Hunters pay the bills Re “Nevada’s killing fields” ((Guest Comment, Sept. 19): In a recent article carried in this publication, Fred Voltz published a rant about “Nevada’s Killing Fields,” which denigrates hunters, anglers, trappers and others. Contrary to Mr. Votlz’ incorrect statements, the real killing fields occur in the absence of sound wildlife management programs.

Wildlife populations in Nevada today are healthy, abundant, and on the increase. They were not always so. Today, there are quadruple the number of bighorn sheep, our state animal, compared to just 30 years ago. Antelope and elk numbers have shown a rapid increase in recent years and mule deer are more than holding their own. The same is true for smaller animals and furbearers. At one time in Nevada there were epidemics of deadly diseases such as rabies and plague carried by wild animals which often spread to pets and livestock, even to people. Not anymore.

Through highly regulated and science-based management programs, including hunting, fishing and trapping, our big game, small game, non-game wild animals and fisheries are doing very well statewide. This is due to the hard work of Nevada Department of Wildlife biologists, and the millions of dollars and hard work provided by scores of Nevada sporting groups.

in Northern and Southern Nevada are dedicated to improving habitats for wild animals and these groups not only provide all of the funding to carry out these programs, but provide the labor as well. Volunteer sporting organizations have funded and built hundreds of water projects (called “guzzlers”) all over the state.

Marshes, wetlands and watercourses are improved, and education programs are taught to the next generation of Nevada’s true conservationists. These successful efforts are from the people who Fred Voltz vilifies in his article.

Voltz refers to animal rights groups. How much money and labor have these groups donated to benefit Nevada’s wildlife? Zero! These groups are too busy setting fires to research laboratories and getting themselves listed on FBI watch lists as domestic terrorists to actually do one positive thing to help wildlife.

Voltz asked the question about values. Most Nevadans are much more aligned with hunting, fishing and trapping activities in Nevada.

How do we know this? In fiscal year 2011, Nevada sporting families spent $409, million throughout the state, resulting in $38 million collected in sales taxes that went into state coffers.

There are a significant number of families in this state who are actually doing something to support wildlife conservation programs. In contrast, the so-called “animal rights” groups only act to destroy and denigrate the hard work and achievements of others.

Our safe schools There was a tragic incident at Sparks Middle School this week, a shooting that left one student and one heroic teacher dead. The satellite trucks rolled in, the news coverage began. All the facts were reported, the photography showed the human elements.

But where was the context?

This kind of white hot, wall-to-wall news coverage leaves a powerful impression that schools are dangerous.

Journalism has never been willing to take responsibility for that impression.

During the spate of school shootings in the 1990s, juvenile crime experts became alarmed at the indiscriminate news coverage. Journalism was repeatedly cautioned that it was creating the perception that all students are dangerous, and all schools hazardous. The FBI reported juvenile homicides fell 56 percent over five years.

Nieman Reports published lengthy criticism of news characterizations of a generation of young “superpredators.”

The Juvenile Policy Institute released a report—School House Hype—that reported, “[T]he number of children killed by gun violence in schools is about half the number of Americans killed annually by lightning strikes.” Years later, journalist Dave Cullen’s report on his nine-year study of Columbine revealed that virtually every major element for which that tragedy became known as a result of news coverage was false. Still, journalism has not learned how to cover these incidents.

Coverage of Sparks Middle School by local news outlets as well as NBC, CBS, ABC, Reuters, the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, New York Times, and Associated Press gave readers and viewers no hint of how rare these incidents are. One CNN story seemed initially to provide greater depth, by posting a link at the bottom OPINION

labeled “Fast facts on school violence.” It turned out to be just a list of violent incidents at schools since 1927—just more of the same, without any depth or perspective.

Parents need some sense from news coverage of whether, after the satellite trucks are gone, it will be safe for them to send their children to school. And family members of teachers and other staffers are entitled to the same information. So here it is: Of the places children frequent, school is easily the safest. In a nation of 314 million people, the number of people killed on school grounds annually has been in two digits for decades. Even those numbers are inflated because they include incidents that merely take place on school grounds, such as a case where a man came to a school and killed his estranged wife, a staff member.

By comparison, school is much safer for children than the home. Number of people who died at Sparks Middle School on that one day: 2. Number of children in the U.S. who die every day all year as a result of abuse: 3.

That figure comes from the statistics office of the U.S. Department of Justice. We found it within minutes of hearing about the Sparks incident. It was available to every reporter.

We are not making light of the Sparks deaths. Every life is precious, and two deaths are too many. There were sidebar stories on other elements. Would it have been so difficult to tell viewers and readers that what usually makes news is the out-of-the-ordinary, that this incident was not the norm, that it was news because it was freakishly rare?

And as a parting thought, we’d like to put forward the idea that Sparks Middle School be renamed after the heroic teacher who died defending his students: Michael Landsberry. Ω |

The more you know Forty years ago, the American Field Service plucked me from a small, beautiful town on the central California coast and set me down as a high school exchange student in a working-class neighborhood on the outskirts of a bustling European capital. Madrid was still under the weighty thumb by of Francisco Franco, and the sight Sheila Leslie of Guardia Civil on every corner wielding large guns and looking fierce under their three-corner hats, was jolting.

There were some difficult times that year—learning the language by ear, often feeling frustrated by being unable to communicate effectively. But there were wonderful times too, taking day trips deep into the original Sierra Nevada, crammed into crowded trains with other young people, sharing bocadillos and wine, and enjoying the crisp mountain air instead of the exhaust fumes of the city. By the end of the year, I was fluent in Spanish at a level you don’t learn in a classroom, and also wise in the big city ways of bus lines and

subways, museums and neighborhood tapas bars where I could drink a cana and order calamares like any madrilena.

I still love Madrid, as anyone who has ever lived there does.

There’s a surprise around every corner and an interesting person to converse with in any social setting.

Friends disagree, loudly, over meals that go on for hours, but the discussions rarely turn rancorous.

A lively discussion is a sign of friendship.

Last month, my best friend from Madrid brought her family on a tour of the Western U.S., traveling through California, Arizona and Nevada. Although they were rained out of the Grand Canyon and had to skip Yosemite altogether due to the wildfire, they loved the outrageousness of Las Vegas and the energy of San Francisco.

Traveling to Reno, we detoured into the Lakes Basin in California’s Plumas National Park, so her two sons, in their 20s, could experience a night in a mountain

cabin, having never built a fire, ridden a mountain bike or a horse, paddled a kayak, or walked a path through the Sierra knowing bears were foraging nearby. On the descent into Sierra Valley they asked about cowboys, and it wasn’t long before we saw some, gathering to round up the cattle for a move to winter pasture.

We talked of the difficult economic times both our countries share right now, particularly the struggle for meaningful employment so many young adults endure, even those with a college education. Their delight in the Western lifestyle, the wide open spaces and impressive scenery was obvious.

Their observations on the role of government and citizen were enlightening.

The Spaniards were impressed with the government support of outdoor activities, surprised to see Forest Service campgrounds and trailheads, bike lanes, and picnic areas, noting the significant amount of activity even in the chill of early autumn.

They observed so many people hiking, biking, boating, fishing, and camping, they concluded everyone in the West must be an outdoorsman.

They enjoyed Virginia City with its kitschy presentation of the Wild West.

They surreptitiously took pictures of several men with outsized holsters on their hips perched on bar stools in mid-afternoon, chuckling that our friends in Madrid would not believe them without proof. They’d expected to see hunting rifles or cowboys with shotguns on the range, but not portly gentlemen swaggering down the boardwalk, ready for a gunfight.

As one evening discussion veered toward aging and the increasing health care issues we’re each starting to confront, they confessed to not understanding why the richest country on Earth has “made such a mess” of providing health care to its people. Why, they wanted to know, do you turn over such a basic need to the profit-seeking private sector, at such a high cost and low return?

Bad vibes An under-the-radar campaign is going on in Reno to arouse sentiment against the organizers of Street Vibrations events.

“Street Vibrations and downtown businesses are taking in a lot of money from motorcyclists, but are treating motorcycle club members like 2nd class citizens,” reads a flier being posted on community bulletin boards around the valley. “By declaring Street Vibes a ‘No Colors’ event while holding it on public property, we believe they are violating the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the Nevada Constitution and Nevada Revised Statute title 54 section 651.”

Street Vibrations is staged by Roadshows Inc. The flier is headed “DISCRIMINATION ON THE BASIS OF CLOTHING OR CLUB MEMBERSHIP IS ILLEGAL Why is Downtown Reno no longer a part of America?”

However, neither federal or state civil rights laws recognize discrimination based on clothing or freedom to associate as grounds for a cause of action. Federal law addresses only race, color, religion, gender or national origin. In July, the U.S. Senate approved a freedom of association measure, but it deals specifically with discrimination in hiring.

And the section of Nevada Revised Statutes named in the flier provides only “race, color, religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity or expression” as grounds for discrimination claims, not clothing or freedom to associate.

Roadshows, which stages motorcycle events in at least four states, is incorporated in Nevada.

Transparency alert Some information in the Nevada Public Utilities Commission docket on the planned Apple/Sierra Pacific solar project in Lyon County has been censored from public view.

One item is concealed under the language “ATTACHMENT A/FILED UNDER CONFIDENTIAL SEAL.” Testimony by NPUC staffer Paul McGuire is heavily blacked out (see photo). Some of these blackouts appear at tantalizing points, such as a reference to the procedures under which Sierra Pacific could acquire the solar plant built by the computer giant. Lines 17 and 18 read in part, “Staff ran another scenario whereby the option to purchase the solar array after year 6 was executed,”—followed by 13 lines that are blacked out. Vox pop Should officials go ahead with projects rejected by residents?

It slowly crawls across the valley, a ribbon of steel and concrete that will connect Sparks with the south end of the by Truckee Meadows, cutting a few Dennis Myers minutes off the travel time to get between those two points.

It’s now called the Southeast Connector. It started out as the Tahoe Pyramid link.

It’s the latest in a series of huge projects that encountered public hostility and so were abandoned—after which officialdom or moneyed interests quietly revived them, changed their names, and made them happen in spite of public sentiment.

“I don’t know that I would call it an ethics problem.”

Meadows to fuel growth became a major campaign issue and killed the project in the 1990s. It was brought back to life under the name of Fish Springs Ranch Water Project, though it was downscaled.

• The Tahoe Pyramid link. The six lane freeway inspired opposition and faded from view in the 1990s, only to come back as the Southwest Connector, now under construction.

“Public officials are looking a decade ahead and the typical voter is looking at next Tuesday,” said political scientist Fred Lokken.

But that’s true of most public policy issues, and city councils and county commissions must figure out for themselves how the public feels.

On many votes, from sewer plants to bond issues, they tend to see the views of the affluent residents in their social and business circles as typical, which they may or may not be.

But in a few rare cases, governing boards must contend with clear expressions of public sentiment—public votes or highly organized movements.

In Washoe County, it takes a lot to get grass roots residents aroused. Voter turnout is normally low, so when grass roots opposition to projects gets organized, it is usually considered politically potent.

Some residents consider it an ethical issue when elected officials deliberately ignore clear expressions of public sentiment like the two

votes against the railroad trench. But Kathleen Clark, an ethics scholar at Missouri’s Washington University School of Law, said that may not be the case.

“I don’t know that I would call it an ethics problem but rather of political responsiveness,” she said.

For that, she indicated, the remedy is the ballot box. She pointed to the mayoral candidacy of New York City Council speaker Christine Quinn as an example. Quinn began the 2013 race for mayor as the frontrunner and ended up losing the Democratic primary election after her role in overriding voter-approved term limits—and thus allowing Michael Bloomberg to serve an additional term—became well known to voters.

When officials defy clearly expressed public sentiment, she said, it suggests they “have not been responsive to the community” and makes them vulnerable to voter retaliation.

One of the few enduring victories by organized grass roots in this valley was the 1992 win by Plumas Street residents against a city plan to widen that street between Plumb and California into a major artery through a residential neighborhood. Die-hard supporters were damaged politically.

Some did not even seek reelection.

In Washoe County, voter judgment like that needs to be expressed quickly.

Politicians and their consultants know that population turnover here is so rapid that by the time an elected official comes up for reelection, many offended voters have moved away.

In one instance, the 1998 election, railroad trench supporters Mike Mouliot and Sue Camp were defeated by trench opponents Ted Short and Pete Sferrazza in races dominated by the trench issue. Together with the public vote against the trench, public sentiment seemed clear. Yet a few days after their election defeats, lame ducks Camp and Mouliot cast votes to guarantee the trench would go forward. There was no voter retaliation to be inflicted because the two had already been rejected by voters.

“The form of government that we have, we elect people to make those hard decisions,” said Progressive Leadership of Nevada director Bob Fulkerson. “But it seems like in all those cases of public expression, officials should express the will of their constituents.”

Lokken does not have high regard for “the notion of turning it over to the voters.”

“I don’t take any of the citizen votes seriously in the Truckee Meadows because they have 20

percent or so of voters turning out.”

With turnout that low, it is not a fair test of public sentiment, he said.

“We have a very large portion of poor voters who are politically disconnected and just don’t vote. … It’s not the voice of the people. It’s the voice of a selected few,” he said. The typical Washoe voter, he said, is “white, male, older with a certain income.”

As a result, those voters often seem to be “the only people who matter in the Truckee Meadows.”

What officials must do, he said, is “decide what the prolonged benefit to the community should be” and vote accordingly. He acknowledges that those infrequent occasions when the public has expressed itself are more difficult for elected officeholders, but they still have an obligation to show leadership. Indeed, he said one of the problems of modern politics is that too many elected officials are too timid and unwilling to face down public opposition on some things.

Complicating these ideals is the presence in Nevada of powerful lobby groups like builders and casinos.

“You do have the risk of boughtand-paid-for politicians who do what the developers want instead of the public,” he said. “It’s not the issue of leadership; it’s the prostitution of governance now.”

Nevertheless, Lokken said, elected officials need to keep their eyes on the

long term and act in the public’s interest, even when there is clear public expression to the contrary and even when the public may not appreciate it.

“They’re not going to thank you, but it will improve their quality of life,” he said.

Fulkerson agreed that residents may not have detailed knowledge of every item that comes before local governments, but that doesn’t mean they are uninformed when issues like Honey Lake come up and the public

While local officials cannot follow or even know public sentiment on every matter that comes before them, he believes, when they fail to respond to those occasional issues that arouse the public, they are furthering public distrust.

“I think that’s one of the things that sours people on government in general, makes them cynical towards government and turns them off of politics,” he said. Ω

by NV Energy since its inception in 2007, and with the recent pledge of $450,000, the funding given to this program by the utility company will total by Sage Leehey $2 million.

“We are going to continue growing and strengthening,” said College of Engineering Dean Manos Margakis. “We have a minor which we are going to continue and add courses to that. We hired a new director for the Renewable Energy Center using some of the funds from NV Energy to attract this gentleman. We’re going to expand the center to include the placement of state of the art equipment for students to work with and attract companies to work with us. We’re going to be very much outreaching to industry.”

NV Energy worked together with the university to create this program six years ago because they believed there needed to be more education about this type of energy.

“Back in 2007, NV Energy and the University of Nevada, Reno decided to collaborate on [the renewable energy] program,” said vice president for external affairs Mary Simmons. “Part of that was because of the need that we both saw from an interest in students in renewable energy and the fact that Nevada really was poised to be a leader in renewable energy and there wasn’t a program related to that, per se, at the university. And we thought that it was overall important for the state and the university to be involved in renewable energy.”

70s and 80s—the researchers began asking about end-of-life choices.

Dr. Joseph Gallo, director of the Precursors Study, was happy to explain how the data has continually found that doctors—by a vast majority—make different choices when faced with dire diagnoses. Physicians who choose the least procedures also tend to have advance directives, an important bit of paperwork that allows patients to choose a health-care proxy and determine in advance what interventions they do or don’t want if they experience a decline in health.

In one scenario where the study group was asked what their wishes would be if they had an irreversible brain disease that left them unable to recognize people or speak, “most people would want everything,” said Gallo, while about 90 percent of doctors “would say no” to CPR, a mechanical ventilator (breathing machine), and kidney dialysis. About 80 percent of the doctors would also say no to major surgery or a feeding tube, he said.

“It seems the more familiar you are with interventions, the less you want,” Gallo said point-blank.

Murray believes blame for the breach can be split three ways between bad physician-patient communication, unrealistic expectations on the part of patients, and their families and a health-care system that encourages excessive

Instead, the physician— a UC Davis medical-school graduate who taught family medicine at the University of Southern California—drew an avalanche of responses. In fact, what he wrote put him center stage in a swirling debate about life, death and doctors.

What did he reveal that was so groundbreaking?

He claimed that a vast majority of physicians make dramatically different end-of-life choices than the rest of us. Put simply, most doctors choose comfort and calm instead of aggressive interventions or treatments, he said. Another way to look at it is that doctors routinely order procedures for patients near the end of life that they would not choose for themselves.

What do doctors know that the rest of us don’t?

According to Murray, physicians have seen the limitations of modern medicine up close and know that attempts to prolong a life can often lead to a protracted, heartbreaking death.

Murray’s 2011 “How Doctors Die” was translated into multiple languages and written about in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and the Sacramento Bee. Thousands of people commented OPINION

on it via the scores of newspapers and blogs that reprinted it. Readers told of “near-dead relatives being assaulted with toxic drugs,” said Murray, being offered “painful procedures for no good reason.” Among the responses were hundreds of anecdotes from physicians and health-care professionals that backed Murray’s thesis.

“Most of the stories were heartwrenching,” he said.

Data that proves the divide isn’t hard to find. Murray cites the Johns Hopkins Precursors Study, one of the longest longitudinal inquiries into aging in the world, which contains a running medical record of health statistics on a group of about 750 doctors, who were members of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore between 1948 and 1964. Through the years, the study has helped medical research correlate, for example, high blood cholesterol with heart attacks. But 15 years ago—with its participants in their 60s,

breathing. One of her many doctors said to the husband, “She’s struggling so much. Don’t you want her on a respirator?” Thinking the doctor knew best, the husband gave his consent, and Ella was hooked up to a breathing machine.

That one moment’s choice turned into seven long days of regret.

Despite her wishes, Ella remained marginally alive in the intensive care unit with “tubes everywhere” and a machine breathing for her throughout the week. According to McGregor, the husband then had to take responsibility to withdraw care. “He was heartbroken,” said McGregor. “He felt he had betrayed his wife during her last week of life. … You could see such pain.”

McGregor, an expert in hospice care (which provides terminally ill patients with comfort rather than aggressive treatments) and palliative medicine (with its focus on relieving and preventing suffering), said Ella’s experience was probably more common than most people know.

“I’ve seen patients die in the ICU with every line going, everything, and the family can’t even get close to them.”

Indeed, though most people want to pass away at home surrounded by loved ones, 70 percent die in a hospital, nursing home or long-term-care

treatment. (Note: A quarter of all Medicare spending occurs in the last year of life.)

But still, is it really true that doctors die differently? Is it possible that the region’s seriously ill people often undergo aggressive interventions before they die—ones they would not want if they better understood the likely outcomes?

We spoke to a number of physicians—especially internists, palliative care and hospice-certified ones—to explore their thoughts about the gap and ask about their own end-of-life wishes.

‘ Don ’ t t u b e m e’ When you consider the large number of deaths Sutter Health’s Dr. James McGregor has witnessed in his decades as a specialist in palliative care and hospice, it is poignant to see him almost overtaken with emotion while telling the story of Ella.

An elderly woman diagnosed with a terminal illness, Ella (not her real name) had strong feelings about not having any medical interventions as she neared her life’s end. She’d filled out her paperwork to this effect and made it official, with her husband serving as her health-care agent in the event that she became unable to make her own decisions. Soon came the inescapable point when Ella, stretched out on a hospital bed and near the end of life, began having difficulty

facilities after a long struggle with advanced cancer, heart failure, incurable disease or the multiple incapacities of old age.

When asked about the gap and why doctors don’t tend to find themselves hooked to respirators in ICUs at the end of their lives in the manner of Ella, McGregor was somber.

“Often the question isn’t framed well,” said McGregor, as in, “‘We have two options here: We can go full-court press, or we can aggressively manage your symptoms and keep you comfortable. What would be quality of life for you?’”

Physicians, he said, tend to choose option No. 2, because they’ve seen what they’ve seen, and “they know one intervention can start a whole cascade.”

Each of the doctors interviewed for this story brought up the difficulty many physicians have in communicating with patients who face a terminal or otherwise awful diagnosis. Medicine and hospitals exist to fight disease and death, goes the thinking, so if a patient dies, the doctor has failed.

McGregor remembered a clinicalskills class he’d taken in medical school that imparted a first-person list of steps a physician should take that concluded with the words “if the patient dies, I failed.”

“We’re supposed to do things, we’re supposed to fix things,” said McGregor. “Physicians can feel powerless if they can’t offer something, and it’s difficult for them to talk about the options that are not the aggressive ‘making you healthy’ options. … A physician can feel he’s failed a patient when he says, ‘Well, you can go to hospice.’”

Indeed, a report published last year in the New England Journal of Medicine found that 69 percent of lung-cancer patients and 81 percent of colorectal-cancer patients did not report understanding from their doctor that chemotherapy was not at all likely to cure their cancer.

But it runs two ways, said McGregor.

The patient or the family can often come in with vastly unrealistic expectations, sometimes reinforced by popular culture. Many see CPR, for example, as a sure-bet lifesaver, but in truth, it is rarely effective. “There’s a popular misperception that medicine can fix everything,” he said. “And there’s also a sense of entitlement sometimes—‘You should give me everything.’”

Sadly, another reason physicians sometimes “do everything” with terribly ill patients is fear of malpractice lawsuits.

“I believe it is a factor,” said McGregor. The other doctors interviewed agreed. “Sometimes, [physicians] just say, ‘OK, we’ll 14 | RN&R |

give you everything,’ even though we know it’s not going to help” as a way of not becoming entangled in a legal action from a family member who thought more procedures were merited, he said.

As for his own end-of-life wishes, McGregor was no different than all but one of the doctors interviewed for this story. If faced with a terminal illness, his wish is to die at home without interventions and with the assistance of hospice.

“I joke that I have DNR, DNAR and AND tattooed on my chest,” said McGregor (do not resuscitate, do not attempt resuscitation, allow natural death).

“Just don’t tube me,” he clarified.

‘N o way are t he y do iN g that to m e’ It can be tough work getting a bit of time on a local physician’s schedule if you’re a regular patient, and that goes double if you’re a journalist hoping for an on-the-record interview about death.

Canceled meetings, postponed conversations, ignored emails—maybe doctors just don’t want to talk about this subject? Or maybe they really are monumentally busy. In one case, a physician suggested we meet for a chat in the lobby of the Future Nissan of Roseville in the Auto Mall while his car was being worked on.

Dr. Michael GuntherMaher appeared a healthy version of Breaking Bad’s Walter White, with a button-down shirt and tie, shaved head and goatee. After turning his car over to mechanics, the medical director for the Sacramento and Roseville Kaiser Permanente hospice apologized for the offbeat interview location, with its roaming salesmen and soft-rock soundtrack, and proceeded to tell the story of Sophie.

An 88-year-old African-American woman, Sophie (not her real name) checked into Kaiser a few months back with a history of rapid weight loss and an infection called sepsis, said GuntherMaher. “We did some tests and found she was anemic. We scanned her abdomen … and we found a mass. It was very clear she had cancer,” he said.

Initially, Sophie said she wanted the doctors to do everything possible to save her life, said GuntherMaher.

At the family’s strong urging, the hospital proceeded to pull out all the stops with interventions and drugs.

“And this woman just slowly died in the ICU with a tube down her throat,” he said. “The family finally said, ‘Take her off the machine.’ It was a very difficult and protracted ending to her life when there was no reasonable hope any of it would work.”

GuntherMaher, who had been asked to consult on Sophie’s case in his role as a palliative specialist, reflected that the woman had given up the chance to return to Oakland to

die peacefully in her own surroundings, “around friends and family who wanted so much to visit her, to say goodbye. … That opportunity was completely lost,” he said.

“I have a lot of stories like this,” he said. “The hospital is full of them.”

GuntherMaher views Sophie’s case as an example of what he refers to as the chaos that accompanies many end-of-life scenarios. It was a desire to help make order out of such end-oflife turmoil that led GuntherMaher on the path to his current post at Kaiser.

“I think most people … what they have is fear,” he said. “They’re afraid.

They’re confronted. There’s unfinished business. They can’t accept that things will come to an end this way because they’re so not ready.”

This state of mind, he said, often lays the ground for patients or their families to go for whatever procedures are offered, however aggressive.

Like every other physician we spoke to, GuntherMaher believes patients should be able to choose for themselves whether or not to undergo treatments near the end of life. “I’m all for people choosing,” he said, “as long as it’s informed.”

Asked why doctors die different, as in Murray’s thesis, GuntherMaher responded, “Doctors are different.”

“As a group, we tend to be on the end of the spectrum where you find capable, intelligent people. So, if you take [such] people and expose them to these complexities and these difficulties over and over again, they’re going to take that and process it.

“The other thing we [doctors] are able to do is reconcile the physiology issues, the biology failing, with the more difficult slippery human issues.

that on virtually a daily basis. Nobody else in our society is, except maybe pastors.”

GuntherMaher said the physicians he hangs out with are in the hospital daily and “most of them who have been vocal about [interventions near the end of life] have basically said, ‘No way are they doing that to me.’”

It was no surprise to find that GuntherMaher’s end-of-life choices echo that of other doctors in the Johns Hopkins’ study. In fact, he’d gathered his three 20-something children just a few months ago for a meeting about his wishes. His son and one daughter were there in person and “We got my daughter and son-in-law on FaceTime on the iPad,” he said. GuntherMaher pulled out his advance directive and showed his children a POLST form.

Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment forms state what kind of medical treatment seriously ill patients—usually already in the hospital or a nursing facility—want for themselves.

“I think it provided a good opportunity for us to be a family and talk about something meaningful together and practice compassionate listening and thoughtful speaking with one another,” he said, “and consider for a moment that time is precious.”

Among other things, GuntherMaher told them, “I don’t want to be resuscitated if my heart stops. I don’t want to be on a mechanical ventilator. When my time comes, I want to die in my own home.”

stylish design and chairs positioned in rows around stations with smiling receptionists. Surprisingly, Woodland Healthcare (a service of Dignity Health) houses a newish Yolo County medical complex that even includes a classroom.

Dr. Jeffrey Yee stands before his students—gray button-down shirt, khakis and a pocket pager—with all the friendly charisma of a socialscience professor. But he’s a doctor who takes time from his paid duties as a general internist to teach elderly and chronically ill patents about advanced directives and POLST forms. Yee’s audience in early September consisted of 14 elderly patients—many of whom looked to be struggling with chronic disease or cancer.

Yee, who testified in 1997 on behalf of POLST before the state Legislature, led his students through a PowerPoint presentation on advance directives and the importance of naming a health-care agent or proxy.

He and a nurse practitioner even performed a skit where the two played siblings with different interpretations of what a doctor recommended should be done with a mom on life support.

“We try to get people to consider the issues beforehand, to have conversations,” Yee said before the class.

“We try to get people to experience the tensions and trade-offs they very well may face in the future.”

Launched six months ago, Yee’s group-education project is one of many approaches being taken across the country to better inform people about their options. Modeled after a much-lauded program at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in Lacrosse, Wis., which proactively encourages hospitalgoers to fill out advance directives, Yee’s patients are invited to attend the two free classes by their

doctor if their medical record triggers them as age 60 with a chronic illness (diabetes, heart failure, lung problems) or if they are simply 70 or older.

Yee doesn’t use “end-of-life” terminology or the word “death” in his seminars. Nor does he discuss specific procedures and their possible outcomes. “When you reduce it to a conversation about ‘this procedure succeeds this amount of time,’ that doesn’t really give you the big picture,” he said. “What number should it be that you say, ‘This is a low chance of success’?” he asked. If you’re 95, he said, you might answer that question differently than if you are 30 and have three kids.

Interestingly, Yee—the youngest doctor interviewed—was the only local physician who didn’t immediately say he would decline interventions if he himself was faced with a terminal illness. “It depends on the situation,” he said. “I don’t know that I could specify that so specifically now.”

Another program that could result in narrowing the gap between physicians and everybody else on endof-life choices is dubbed ROYL, short for The Rest of Your Life.

Dr. Philip Lisagor, a retired cardiothoracic surgeon and chief medical officer for ROYL in Reno, had a realization toward the end of his career: “It struck me that nobody was talking to patients with serious illnesses about what was happening,” he said.

“A specialist would come in with some high-tech procedure and send them back to the referring doctor.

Something else would happen to the patient, and they’d be off for another procedure. Doctors weren’t talking to each other or to their patients.

“A game is played,” he said.

Lisagor noted that the profit motive should not be overlooked when discussing why the gap exists, and so many doctors often encourage interventions they themselves wouldn’t choose. “The health-care industry makes a huge amount of money on end-of-life care,” said Lisagor. Indeed, about 27 percent of Medicare’s annual $327 billion budget—$88 billion—now goes to care for patients in their final year of life.

“Everyone in the system profits from more procedures,” said Lisagor, “including doctors, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, people down the line in diagnostic centers and etc. …

It’s an enormous issue.”

Since retiring, Lisagor and colleagues set up the ROYL program, an online organizational system that walks people through “all the documents and information necessary for you to plan your life and health aging.” ROYL (www. theroyl.com) encompasses financial, emotional and physical issues in addition to medical and end-oflife planning. He hopes to beta test at a skilled nursing facility in the

In her early 60s, Clarice (not her real name) was diagnosed in February with kidney cancer. “She was not curable,” he said. After doing some tests, “We told her, ‘This is not looking good. You have advanced cancer, and you’re too weak to undergo chemotherapy, which means you don’t have any reasonable options for beating this.’”

Clarice appreciated the candor, said GuntherMaher.

“She has a spiritual belief system. She has a healthy marriage, healthy relationships with her kids, and she said, ‘I’ll be OK with this.

I want to go home and be with my family and let them take care of me. I can still enjoy some time with them.’”

She left the hospital and went into hospice, said the doctor. “I spoke to her daughter yesterday, and they’re flying her sister home from Guam. …

The family is coming together. The children are saying, ‘I’m dropping everything to be with Mom.’ There’s a time in life when you just do that.”

In other words, Clarice accepted her fate and prepared for her own good death. She knew what she wanted. She made her choices. She embraced a truth about dying that most physicians already know all too well: Often doing less allows so much more. Ω

n Sept. 22, the University of Nevada, Reno campus was awash with color and activity during the Color Me Rad 5K race. Through clouds of colored powder, runners of all ages emerged, bibs barely visible beneath splatters of neon blues and pinks. But unlike other races, laughter and chatter drowned out the sounds of heavy breathing and feet on the pavement.

Color Me Rad is not a typical 5 kilometer race. It’s one of many local annual themed 5K races, also known as “fun runs,” that have run through Reno in the past few years. This particular event—which benefits, in part, Special Olympics of Nevada—involves throwing packets of colored powder on runners as they pass through the race. To an outsider, the event resembles Holi, the spring Hindu festival in

which participants also douse one another with colors from head to toe. Other races, such as the Color Run, Run or Dye, Color in Motion, and the Graffiti Run, use the same technique.

“I never thought I’d see so many different types of people at a race,” said Color Me Rad participant Matt Rosen, a Truckee resident and long-time athlete. The fun runs are open to people of all ages and training levels, which means that a typical themed 5K features a range of experienced runners to families pushing children in strollers around the track.

“I don’t think these types of races necessarily encourage competition or rigor, but it’s cool to have another time on your record,” he says. “And I think there are worse ways to get people excited about exercise.”

If anything, fun runs have shown that allowing people to get messy or dress up in silly costumes is the key for popular community fitness events. Fun runs are social and typically non-competitive, although runners are still timed and often rewarded for good performance.

Local artist Lisa Kurt signed up for Color Me Rad when she found herself in need of a new challenge.

“I wanted to motivate myself to exercise more and give myself an achievable goal, but also have fun with it,” she says.

Kurt trained for the race with a friend, who was at a similar fitness level.

“We jogged about three days a week,” she says. “I also went for solo jogs and walks another day or two as needed.”

Kurt says she doesn’t identify as a runner—“maybe in the future”—but does plan to run in more 5K races.

“I definitely think the themes make 5Ks more fun and take the pressure off,” she says. “Some people sign up and walk the whole way, or you see families with little kids participate. You tend to see all ages and levels of runners with the themed races so it creates a more fun atmosphere. You can’t take yourself too seriously if you’re running around in a costume or with color being launched at you.”

community-hosted events, because “the people of Reno are what make these events cool.”

“You can’t create the magic of Reno culture by throwing packets of color powder, then packing it all up in a truck and moving on to the rest of the country,” Adkins says.

This year’s Zombie Crawl on Oct. 26 will kick off with the No-Brainer 5K at 10 a.m. Runners will dress up as zombies and run from Wingfield Park to downtown Reno.

(Theirs isn’t the only zombie 5K that day, either. Non-profit STEP2 will also host the Running Dead 5K at 9:30 a.m. as a benefit event.)

Earlier this year, the Arch Rivals 5K was part of the Superhero Crawl, and costumed heroes and villains raced around downtown Reno.

The No-Brainer 5K is the first run hosted as part of the Zombie Crawl, intended to include a wider range of participants. The crawl also hosts a large-scale Thriller dance reenactment under the Reno arch every year. Planning a 5K and planning a bar crawl have turned out to be similar endeavors, Adkins says. The logistics include mapping out a safe area in the city and working with local businesses.

“We were trying to increase the people we can reach with our events,” Adkins says. “Not everyone is 21 and over. We started the ‘Thriller’ dance in order to get kids involved, but not everyone wants to be out at night.”

The No-Brainer run is timed, and runners will be eligible to win prizes based on their performance.

But Adkins says the event is about having fun through a healthy and social outlet.

“We don’t try to make it a competition,” he says. “There’s already events like Tough Mudder.

We just say we’re looking for the ‘soft mudders.’”

Adkins says just running in a 5K is an accomplishment for many people. He wants people to get recognition for their costumes and participation.

“For some people, just being a part of something is enough,” he says. “Just come out and do it. Don’t come out to win.” Ω

try out and train, maybe using free apps and web tutorials, and trails are available throughout cities in both urban and natural environments.

But like other free activities in the fitness industry, businesses have found ways to capitalize on it. Between races, clothing, shoes and gear, running has become a multimillion dollar industry.

According to a June 20 U.S. News story, more than 14 million people finished a road race in 2011, compared to just 4.8 million in 1990. And more than half of the 14 million runners were women.

Researchers attribute the increase in women runners to several factors: an increase in female-driven health blogs, an abundance of fitnessrelated material posted to websites like Pinterest, and an economical decision to be fit without shelling out cash to pay for a trainer or gym.

But fun runs have received some backlash from avid runners, who see the races as a gimmick.

After the various color runs began attracting thousands of people across the country, other themes emerged, ranging from post-apocalyptic zombie races to a “Bad Prom” run, in which runners dress up in gaudy prom-related outfits. But costumes and a face full of powder can be distracting and potentially dangerous for serious runners. Themed races also tend to cost more than a standard 5K. The average entrance fee for a 5K is $30. Fun runs can charge as much as $75. The higher cost usually comes with extra goodies like T-shirts and accessories.

However, fitness experts say the themes appeal to many people who don’t identify as athletes or runners, and can be a good first race for novices. It also provides a positive and social atmosphere, less concerned with competition.

And now, local organizations are using the 5K model as a community bonding experience and a fundraising opportunity.

We really wanted to create a product that wasn’t device-dependent, that was just about the content. We wanted to future-proof SuicideGirls so that this version will last the next 10 or 20 years.

In 2001, the sort of body types that you were presenting, with a lot of tattoos and piercings and not traditional 3624-36 body types, that was a lot more unusual then than now. Do you feel like it’s a positive thing that’s caught on in different websites and mass media?

It’s definitely a positive. …

I think the more people that embrace a variety of body types as being beautiful and celebrate our individuality as being beautiful is a win for everybody in the world [laughs]. If I was like, “no, only people that really appreciate it!” I would be the biggest hypocrite. I think it’s been remarkable the way that the world has changed in the last 12 years to embrace girls of all different body types. There’s still definitely a place for SuicideGirls, and we have girls that still aren’t celebrated in any sort of media—girls with lentigo [skin discolorations] or amputees or little people.

But when you say “SuicideGirl,” I picture a certain kind of woman: a Betty Page haircut with piercings and tattoos.

I think that SuicideGirls is about an attitude, and I think that it can be applied more widely. I think the term SuicideGirls, to me at least, means somebody who is living their life not to fit a certain mold or a certain type—outspoken, confident and unabashedly themselves. Ω

I went a la carte. The Westlake beef soup ($7.95) caught my eye. A very popular soup from the Zhejiang Province, it’s a type of egg drop soup.

It is very light with a silky texture nuanced with cilantro and white pepper. Its flavor was a harmony of citrus with a slight bite and a thick, savory finish.

Next, my eyes saw egg foo young and that was a must. This is truly one of my favorite Chinese dishes. Egg foo young is an omelet dish found in Chinese, Indonesian, British and Chinese American cuisine. The name comes from the Cantonese language.

Literally meaning “lotus egg,” this dish is prepared with beaten eggs and meat or seafood is often mixed in with the gravy. I had the house special ($8.95).

I was amazed to be presented with such an elegant dish. It was a lacy golden omelet with an elaborate filling mixed in with bean sprouts and minced water chestnuts, bits of roast pork, chicken and fresh shrimp, and chopped scallions. Pillowy and punctuated with crunchy vegetables, it was bronzed at its edges from frying.

But it is the brown gravy, which was thick and savory, a little bit sweet and a little bit salty, that brings it all together. One big pie-like presentation covering the entire plate and beneath its silken wash of gravy, it’s indeed an amazing egg foo young.

I wanted to try one of the chef’s specials, so the Dragon and Phoenix ($10.95) was my choice. Sautéed shrimp with vegetables shared the plate with general’s chicken. Chef Jack Luony has been cooking for 30 plus years and learned his craft in Taiwan and the Bay Area. He told me that everything is made to order using fresh, seasonal vegetables.

This is Luony’s own recipe for the Phoenix using a traditional Chinese brown wine, scallions, garlic. It’s thickened with corn starch and a few spices and nice, fresh vegetables, and large shrimp.

This was side-by-side with the chicken. It was sweet and slightly spicy. I like how light the batter was, since this is deep-fried and then coated with the sauce. You bite almost directly into the chicken—the batter barely covering the meat and not dominating the mouthful, as is often the case with this dish. The house fried rice ($6.50) was more than enough with pork, chicken and shrimp still fluffy, fresh with a modest amount of veggies.

There were was even chop suey ($7.95-$8.95), an American-Chinese cuisine—next time. What I found was freshness, simplicity and flavor.

That’s the quintessential recipe for a restaurant’s success. Ω

Bloody pointless Carrie If you’ve read the 1974 Stephen King novel Carrie, and you’ve seen the 1976 Brian De Palma film of that novel, you know that the book and that film are very different.

If you see the new 2013 version of Carrie starring Chloe Grace Moretz in the role that netted original star Sissy Spacek an Oscar nomination, you’ll probably walk away feeling by it has more in common with De Palma’s film Bob Grimm than King’s novel.

King’s novel, about a bullied telekinetic b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m high school girl who endures one prank too many at the senior prom, was told in a series of episodic news reports, flashbacks and interviews. It was, dare I say, a sloppy yet entertaining first effort from the legendary King, and De Palma’s film improved upon it.

The new film welcomes a few of the novel’s plot points back into the storyline, but it takes a lot of the same liberties De Palma took with the near four-decade-old novel. In the new version, a few more characters survive the fiery Black Prom Tragedy, and one character might be pregnant. Otherwise, this feels very much like a remake of De Palma’s movie rather than a faithful retelling of King’s book.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing. I’m a King fan, but having read Carrie after seeing the ’76 film, I found the novel annoying and gimmicky. De Palma went to the core of that novel, massaged its great ideas, and made something akin to a horror masterpiece, with much thanks given to the brilliant Spacek.

Director Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don’t Cry) provides little reason for actually making the latest Carrie in the end. Yes, it takes place in the present, where cellular phones and the internet have become prevalent bullying weaponry, but much of the plot execution remains the same. In a lot of ways, this version even rips off De Palma.

Moretz (Kick-Ass) was a mere 15 years old during the time of filming, a little young for high school senior. While Spacek did an exemplary job playing younger than her then 26 years for the original, Moretz looks like a freshman crashing the senior prom in this one.

The Moretz performance is, in many ways, admirable. She captures the pain and confusion of a young girl tormented by her classmates, having received no valuable life coaching from her religious fanatic mother (played here by Julianne Moore in a role originated by the also Oscar-nominated Piper Laurie). Incidentally, Moretz just got through playing a tormented teen in this year’s awful, equally bloody Kick-Ass 2.

Moore goes to a darker place with the role of Margaret White, as opposed to Laurie’s campy, crazy take. This Margaret is far harder on herself (intentional cutting) and daughter, simmering with a dark, disturbing violence that makes her truly hateful. Moretz and Moore play well off each other during the movie’s major confrontation scenes.

As for supporting performances, Pierce gets it right with the casting of Gabriella Wilde as the virtuous Sue Snell, the popular student who regrets bullying Carrie and asks her own boyfriend, Tommy Ross (a charming Ansel Elgort), to escort Carrie to the prom, with deadly results. Judy Greer is OK as the gym teacher trying to get Carrie through everything in one piece.

On the down side, Portia Doubleday and Alex Russell are just caricatures as villains Chris Hargensen and Billy Nolan (notoriously played by the wild-eyed Nancy Allen and John Travolta in the ’76 version). Their dull portrayals bring nothing new to the party.

The infamous prom scene, where Carrie goes nuclear after getting doused with pig’s blood, was an operatic, gloriously torturous, expertly prolonged hell in De Palma’s movie.

The new version feels hastily edited and glossed over with a CGI polish. It totally misses the mark, and is the final reason the remake is mediocre at best.

I suppose if you’ve never seen De Palma’s film, the 2013 version might score higher with you. So, yeah, this review is coming to you from a guy who holds the original in high regard.

While the remake is, at times, skillfully made, I feel its resources could’ve been put to a better cinematic use, like, say, an actual big screen adaptation of King’s great novel The Stand. A TV miniseries starring Molly Ringwald just won’t do! Ω

This is animation done with all the style and grace of a spastic colon saturated with hot sauce. While the first film in this series had a reasonable amount of charm, this one goes haywire from its start right until the finish line. Bill Hader returns as the voice of Flint, the overly excited inventor who, in the first movie, managed to use a crazy invention to inundate his hometown with giant food. Now, the machine has gone nuts, creating a race of living food including cheeseburger spiders and dolphin bananas. The film boasts an intolerably frantic pace, with a plotline that’s scattered beyond reasonability. It’s hard to follow, but it does have the occasional fart and poop joke to make the kids laugh. The only character I managed to enjoy was a jittery monkey trying to put out a sparkler, and that accounts for about 30 seconds of the film. Don’t waste your time and, trust me, your kids won’t like it either.

Robert Rodriguez brings Danny Trejo back for another round of violent B-movie action, and the joke has grown tired. I was a big fan of the original movie and the fake Grindhouse trailer, but this one gets dumb to the point of annoyance. The 69-year-old Trejo, who participates in countless film projects, is starting to look a little tired in the title role. Charlie Sheen (billed under his real name, Carlos Estevez) is actually pretty funny as the President of the United States, but he only has a few scenes.

The same can’t be said for Mel Gibson, who mugs his way through a bad guy role in a manner that reveals near desperation to be taken seriously again. I give props to Amber Heard, who gets the film’s best part as a beauty queen/secret agent, but issue demerits to Sofia Vergara who screams her way through her role as a villain with machine gun breasts, a gimmicky rip-off of the girl with machine gun legs from Rodriguez’s Planet Terror. Rodriguez seems to be losing it to some degree.

Variety show The Adventures of Good & Proud After finishing her set at a showcase of local female singer-songwriters, Tovah Goodman was approached by by Brad Bynum another songwriter on the bill, Kelly Proud. Goodman agreed immediately, and their first child, their duo project The Adventures of Good & Proud, was born not too long afterward.

Their shows consistent of a variety of songs: some serious, some comical, some originals, some covers, some performed solo by one or the other, some performed together.

And between songs, they perform mini comedy routines filled with innuendo-heavy banter, much of it improvised.

“We realized there was kind of a need in this town for some fun,” says Goodman. “The bands here take themselves way too seriously.”

“Not always without good reason,” says Proud. “Some of them are awesome and should take themselves seriously. But we are not serious.”

They do, however, have some serious songs. Proud plays piano and keyboards and Goodman plays guitar. They both sing.

With Goodman accompanying on guitar, Proud sings a sad and lovely rendition of the Linda Ronstadt Spanish language song “Por un Amor” and originals like the after-hours piano ballad “My World,” sounding a bit like a bluesier Tori Amos.

Their voices have very different textures—Proud’s is higher but scruffier—and the voices complement each other nicely. It’s more of a distinctive blend, like Jagger and Richards, than the clean harmony of two vocalists who sound similar. It’s more like the Stones than the Beatles. And they nail the tight harmonies.

They do almost unrecognizable covers, like MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This,” with Goodman singing the quick rap verses with a seemingly effortless sing-song voice. They do an a cappella rendition of New Zealand singer Lorde’s contemporary hit “Royals,” complete with foot stomps, hand claps and body slaps, and a vocal arrangement that bounces back and forth between them.

Their live performances are like variety shows, with a mix of comedic sketches, novelty tunes and more serious songs. They riff on current tunes and popular culture. At a recent show, they did a live mash-up of Sara Bareilles’ “Brave” and Katy Perry’s very similar sounding song “Roar,” with Goodman and Proud adopting the personae of the pop starlets. Proud, playing Perry, even stripped down to a cupcake bra.

Their onstage antics invite a lot of heckling, but Proud says they’re happy to heckle back.

“We’re good at it, and we have microphones,” she says.

Their shows usually include Goodman’s “Stalker Song,” in which they invite an audience member up onstage. Goodman serenades him, getting closer and closer and maintaining eye contact long past the point of being uncomfortable, adopting the creepy persona of the obsessive romantic who narrates the song, mistaking a casual hello for true romance.

“I have to go over the top or nothing,” she says.

The “Adventures” part of the band name is important, because this isn’t just a musical duo, but a song, dance and comedy act that’s almost like some inappropriate late-night variety act.

“Most shows, you kind of know what to expect,” says Goodman.

“We love that people come to our shows going, ‘I hope I don’t get picked on.’ They never know what to expect.” Ω

hoMe S N a e M A D A V NE to Me Nevada day CelebratioN The Silver State marks 149 years of statehood on Oct. 31, but the celebration takes place this week in Carson City. The festivities kick off with the RSVP Nevada Day Fair on Thursday, Oct. 24. The 29th annual Retired and Senior Volunteer Program’s carnival features rides, games, food and crafts. The fair runs through Sunday, Oct. 27, at Mill’s Park, 1111 E. William St. Admission is free, but visitors will need to purchase tickets for rides. Call 687-4680 ext. 7 for details.

Other highlights of the four-day state celebration include the 30th annual Nevada Day Pow Wow, or the La Ka Le’i Be Pow Wow hosted by the Carson Colony. Native American tribes from across the United States and Canada will participate in the gathering, which will also feature arts and crafts and food vendors.

The pow wow takes place Friday, Oct. 25, through Sunday, Oct. 27, at Colony Gym, 2900 S. Curry Street.

The majority of Nevada Day events occur on Saturday, Oct. 26. The 75th annual Nevada Day Parade starts at 10 a.m. in downtown Carson City.

The procession begins at the corner of William and Carson streets, heading south through downtown, and ends at Stewart and Carson streets.

Nevada Day events continue after the parade, including the Nevada Day Beard Contest at the amphitheater just south of the Nevada Capitol, the 40th Annual World Championship Single Jack Drilling Contest at the Carson Nugget west parking lot and the Chili Feed at noon at the Carson Nugget. Finally, the Capital City Community Band will perform a free concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the amphitheater in the Legislative Mall. Call 883-2219. The two teams will compete for bragging rights and possession of the Fremont Cannon, one of the most expensive in college football. As part of Homecoming Week and to drum up support for the home team, the University of Nevada Alumni Association presents the inaugural Nevada Wolf Pack March from the Arch, which will feature UNR homecoming floats, the Wolf Pack Marching Band and various alumni, among others. The march will begin at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 25, and travel from the downtown Reno Arch, north along Virginia Street and will end at the UNR Quad for a pep rally, carnival and Lighting of the Wolf. Golden pond scum I went to meet my girlfriend’s 90-year-old father. They have a conflicted relationship. He doesn’t “agree” with his daughter’s homosexuality, generally looks down on women, and believes they should be helpful, nice, pretty, and married to men. When we got to his upscale senior living facility a few hours away, I jokingly asked my girlfriend whether I should change out of my jean shorts and into dress pants. She said yes, and I said, “Are you serious?” She then pulled out a “nice outfit” she’d brought for me. I felt angry that she’d sneaked this up on me. I felt even angrier meeting her father, who barely acknowledged my existence and didn’t notice this “nice outfit” I ended up putting on. Should I remind my girlfriend that she no longer chases her father’s approval?

Tell her I certainly will not?

Here’s an ornery guy who’s probably spent much of the past 90 years convinced that women belong in the kitchen wearing ruffled aprons, baking pies and practicing saying, “Yes, dear.” Yeah, he’ll be changing—the direction his finger’s pointing when he looks at his daughter, gestures toward his closet, and says, “Could you go back in, change into a dress, and come out with a husband?”

Your girlfriend can tell herself she’ll no longer be chasing her father’s approval yet be running as fast as she can after it on the inside. It’s deep-seated stuff, wanting your parents to approve of you, to appreciate who you are and love you for it, and it’s tough stuff knowing they don’t and probably never will. So as much as she might wish things were different and vow they’re going to be, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that her father still wears the pants in the family (even if he also wears the diapers).

It’s probably tempting to go all one-woman gay pride march and picket the old goat’s bed: “We’re here! We’re queer! Get used to it!” (Or, later in the day, “We’re here! We’re queer! We need a beer!”) And if how your girlfriend handled the change of clothes—going sneaky to get her way—is a pattern, you two have a problem.

But maybe she was just desperate to keep her time with him from being conflict-filled and awful and couldn’t bear to do battle with you right before facing her father’s disapproving looks because the man of her dreams is a woman.

Her father is grazing 100 and will be dead soon.

Cheese whiz Laura Conrow Laura Conrow is one of two coowners and founders at Wedge—A Cheese Shop, a specialty cheese shop in midtown. Wedge has been open a little over a year and was recently chosen as the location of the October Reno-Sparks Cash Mob that happened last week. The Reno-Sparks Cash Mob is a group of people who pledge to spend $10 to $20 at a local business, chosen by the organizers, in one day each month in order to promote local businesses.

So, tell me a little bit about Wedge.

We carry over 100 artisan and farmstead cheeses. We carry meats, everything that goes with cheese, so there’s wine and beer. We make sandwiches. We have nectars and jams and everything. About a third of our products come from the west coast, about another third from the rest of the U.S., and then another third is from international sources.

You’ve been open for how long?

We’ve been open for 14 months. We opened a year ago July.

Why did you decide to open a cheese shop?

I have just wanted to have a cheese shop for a long, long time. I’ve been a cheese

Last week, Senator Dean Heller and Representative Mark Amodei voted “no” on the bill to re-open the government and to raise the federal debt ceiling. You can defend Heller and Amodei any way you’d like, should you be a supporter. I interpret their vote thusly—they voted to keep the federal government closed, keeping close to a million people out of work, and they voted to ignite the first-ever default of the United States government, thereby threatening some kind of national and international economic calamity.

Just how large of a calamity, we’ll have to guess. Thank God. (Actually, God had nothing to do with it. Thank the Senate.)

As such, I find their votes indefensible, reprehensible and detestable.

What’s with this ’tude of “let’s go ahead and do harm to the country in the pursuit of our radical vision for government spending and our all consuming hatred of national health insurance”? With their votes, Heller and Amodei had a chance to repudiate this cluster of unreasonable, OPINION

And how has it been here in Midtown?

It’s been great. We’ve had a really positive response. We’ve had a lot of people coming in the store. A lot of people have heard about us word of mouth, and they say, “I’m so glad I finally came in,” or people walk by having lunch from somewhere and say, “What? Reno has a cheese shop? That’s so awesome!” And they come in, and the best compliment I could ever get is having them come in and say, “I feel like I’m in Europe!” That kind of traditional cheese shop, so that’s great.

So why did you choose to open it here?

My partner, Peter, was familiar with this area. I was actually living down in the Carson Valley, and he suggested Midtown.

He just had a really good sense of what was going on down here and the potential and he pointed it out, and I said I agree.

This is just a wonderful, exciting place to be. There’s so many new things happening. Rent was nice and affordable, too.

How do you feel about being chosen for the Cash Mob?

Why did you choose to be in Reno, in general?

We’re so grateful to have been chosen. It’s great to have new people come in because they can be new customers. I think the Cash Mob is a great idea, and I’m going to make sure to support future ones. Ω
