Idan Raichel Project

Artown’s 2013-2014 Encore Series kicks off with a performance by the Israeli singersongwriter and his collective of musicians from a variety of cultural origins. The members of the Idan Raichel Project have become global ambassadors representing a hopeful world in which artistic collaboration breaks down barriers between people of different backgrounds and beliefs. A household name in Israel, Raichel is a composer, keyboardist and producer and has performed with Alicia Keys, collaborated with India.Arie on several musical projects and has performed for President Barack Obama. Idan Raichel Project’s latest album, Quarter to Six, features guest appearances by Portuguese fado star Ana Moura, Palestinian-Israeli singer Mira Awad, German counter-tenor Andreas Scholl, Colombia’s Marta Gómez, Vieux Farka Touré and a selection of some of Israel’s up-andcoming singers and musicians. Great May Center Pumpkin Walk
The second annual event features hundreds of hand-carved pumpkins, which will be lit and put on display. Costumed volunteers will pass out candy and treats to kids as they walk along the trail at the Wilbur D. May Museum and Arboretum. Hot chocolate and cider will be served after the walk. The trail is stroller and wheelchair accessible. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes to get in the spirit of the season. The all-ages event begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Rancho San Rafael Park, 1595 N. Sierra St. Admission is $3 per person. Call 785-5961 or visit www.maycenter.com.
Sounds Music Walk
Participating venues in Reno’s bustling Midtown will open their doors to the public for this event presented by the Creative Coalition of Midtown. There will be music-themed art, activities, food and live entertainment beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12. Admission is free. Maps can be downloaded from the coalition’s website or picked up on the evening of the event at Melting Pot Emporium, 1049 S. Virginia St. Later that night, the Biggest Little City Club at 188 California Ave., and Reno Public House at 33 St. Lawrence Ave. will take part in the Sounds Music Walk Late Night event. For a $25 wristband, attendees will get a special edition show print, enjoy drink specials and see performances by Failure Machine, Knowledge Lives Forever, Pretty Unknown and Formerly Known As (a Prince tribute band). Reno Fright Fest Presents Slaughter House
The annual Halloween attraction returns for another year of terror at its new location under the Rise Nightclub, 210 N. Sierra St., in downtown Reno. Boasting more than 18,000 square feet, the venue will feature plenty of frights to keep visitors on edge. The horror house will open for business on Thursday, Oct. 10, and continue its ghastly operations on Oct. 11-13, 17-20, 24-27, 31 and Nov. 1-3. Hours are 7-11 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 5-9 p.m. on Sunday. The Slaughter House will stay open late on Halloween night. Admission is $13 per person. Chalk on the Block
The Theta Omicron chapter of Pi Kappa Phi presents this community street art festival. Original works of art will be exhibited as part of the two-day festival, which will also feature art vendors, live music, entertainment, performance art, workshops, an interactive kid’s zone, food and refreshments. The event benefits Push America, which raises funds and awareness for people with disabilities. The festival takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12-13, at the Joe Crowley Student Union at the University of Nevada, Reno, 1664 N. Virginia St. Admission is free. Eldorado Great Italian Festival
The Eldorado Hotel Casino’s 32nd annual festival, held every year over Columbus Day weekend, celebrates Italian culture and traditions by transforming downtown Reno into Little Italy. The event includes a grape stomp, sauce cookers’ competition, an Italian farmers’ market, bocce ball, kids’ gelato-eating contest, Ferrari car display, Italian buffet and live entertainment by Ray Massa’s Eurorhythms, Moreno Fruzzetti, Tre Bella, Bella Ciao, Capuano n’ T Rock and Primo Basso, among others. The festivities begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12-13, on Third, Fourth and Virginia streets in downtown Reno outside the Eldorado, 345 N. Virginia St. Admission is free.
