Tips for Avoiding and Spreading the Flu Since the flu is generally transmitted from person to person, the best way to prevent infections is to follow the tips below and regularly wash your hands with warm, soapy water for at least 15 seconds. Respiratory droplets can be picked up in the air or by touching a droplet on a person or contaminated object, and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes.

If you don’t have access to water, use alcohol-based antibacterial wipes or hand sanitizers to clean your hands. Consider keeping wipes where you might need them most – in the car, your purse and at the office.

People who are vulnerable to developing complications of the flu such as infants, the elderly and those with suppressed immune systems, should avoid public areas where the chances of being exposed to a virus are high. If a high-risk loved one gets the flu, call their doctor immediately.

Stop the Spread For otherwise healthy adults, take extra precautions to avoid infection or to stop the spread: • If you get the flu, stay home and encourage others with the flu to do the same.

• Don’t share food, drinks, towels and toiletries.

• Disinfect telephones, doorknobs, keyboards and other items.

Symptoms Flu symptoms typically include a fever between 102° F and 104° F, headache, body aches, severe fatigue and weakness. A dry cough, sore throat and stuffy nose may accompany these symptoms. Children may also experience nausea, vomiting and ear infections.

If symptoms worsen or, if after some improvement, you develop new symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, high fever, chills, chest pain or coughing, call your doctor. These can be signs of pneumonia.

A Shot at Prevention An annual flu shot can greatly lower your chance of getting the flu. Ask your doctor if flu immunizations are right for you and your family.

If you get the flu, stay home and encourage others with the flu to do the same.

• Discard used tissues right away. Do not leave them in your bathroom wastebasket, or in any other moist environment.

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Turns out people are interested in my electric car. I don’t blame them, as it’s pretty cool. I thought I’d throw out some additions to my cover story.

First, Nissan threw in Sirius/ XM, which was cool. But what’s really cool about it is when I stop in the shadow of one of Reno’s taller buildings, it blocks the satellite reception. So get this, since the car makes no noise, and there’s no background hum from the car engine, it’s like the car has died. Weird. With no engine noise, the stereo sounds awesome. It’s like driving headphones to work.

People ask me how many miles I get to a charge. I don’t know. It’s about a hundred, but since the brakes charge the batteries, certain conditions add miles to the charge.

If I use the regular, old plugit-in-the-wall plug, the 120 volts, it takes about 12 or 13 hours to go from 0 percent to 100 percent. Again, just an estimation, since I’ve only let it get down to 12 percent or so. But I installed a 240 volt power station, and that cuts the time in half, which is about what you’d expect.

The car is very powerful, the kind of power that gets you off at the light more than the kind that tows boats. It’s got two settings, powersaving (ECO) and regular drive. The fact that the speed is on a governor convinces me that if I weren’t on a lease I could hack that governor and increase the speed and the top end. Also, the Bluetooth works on the cell phone calls, but not on the cell phone MP3 player.

I have a feeling that’s another hack I could do if I wanted to risk my warranty, which I don’t.

Still, I am interested in the concept of car security and hacking, since all I have to do is walk up to it, and the “smart key” allows me to open the door and start the car. *** It’s 95-word short fiction time. Send your entries to renofiction@newsreview.com.

It appears that some city employees are working with a company based in Incline Village to ram a noxious project down the throats of the good people of our city!

Earlier this year, C4 Equity LLC (a.k.a. FW Carson Company) proposed to build a truck terminal and a concrete/asphalt crushing and composting facility at 700 Gaslight Lane, adjacent to University Ridge homes. Our community was caught off guard, as the public notice did not reveal the full extent of the planned operation. Surprisingly, the Planning Commission approved the application on Feb. 6. Many citizens and the University Ridge Homeowners Association appealed.

The City Council unanimously voted to revoke the permit on March 13. In addition to creating noise, dust and stench for neighbors, the project would have been a hazard to public health because of truck traffic at the intersection of Socrates Drive and Gaslight Lane.

This intersection is on a downhill curve and adjacent to the Union Pacific Railroad grade crossing. UP sent the City a letter opposing the project for this reason.

Prior to the hearing before the City Council, C4 Equity threatened that if the appellants would not compromise, it would subdivide the property so it could do anything it wanted to do on parcels not adjacent to homes. The principals of C4 Equity followed through with their threat and their application for subdivision was considered at a public hearing before the Planning Commission on July 9. As at the City Council meeting, at least 100 concerned citizens appeared at the hearing and many voiced their objections. Thankfully, the Planning Commission turned down C4 Equity’s application this time around.

We were shocked to learn, a few days later, that city employees in the Community Development department decided to rule the Planning Commission’s decision

They claimed that the city’s requirement for a Special Use Permit Application for subdivision of land with residential adjacency conflicted with state law, but they did not explain why. If you read the state law they cited, you will be as baffled as I am at this apparently arbitrary decision.

Moreover, we do not believe that city officials have the legal authority for this action. Changing city code requires proposing a text amendment, which is reviewed by the Planning Commission with a public hearing. By de facto changing city code, these officials have violated due process and stripped Reno citizens of their rights!

It appears that to some city employees “Community Development” means company development, and let the community be damned! We deplore this outrageous action and we will fight to protect citizens’ rights.

Livable community?

I just do not understand how the city is planning our community.

We live in the northwest area.

We lived here before the houses became shabby with dirt yards, junk cars and tagging everywhere, but I digress. Most people are happy when stores, restaurants and other amenities move closer to their homes. This [usually] means less driving and more time with our families, but not so much in the northwest area. Let me explain: For years, there was only Safeway and Albertsons. Then, of course, here comes Walmart. When the Hollywood Video store closed near what is now Save Mart, we hoped for a new place to eat or shop for clothes, but instead [we got]another auto parts store. Why? There is already an auto parts store right across the street.

phone store. We already have a Verizon, but no [we got] another phone store along with a doughnut shop because we cannot get doughnuts at Safeway, Save Mart or Walmart. We can, but those are not $10 a dozen. OK, so nothing comes along for a while, then we see new ground being broken—please how about an Olive Garden or maybe an Outback, Applebees, anything. We finally learn it is tire shop. Why? We have Big O tires just across the street, and yes, even frigging Walmart has a tire department.

I guess from now on when we see some thing being built in our neighborhood, we will just look across the street to see what we don’t already have two or more of.

Sometimes it’s not Re “Is hunting moral?” (Editorial, Sept. 26): I grew up hunting, not as a trophy hobby, but meat for the table. My father hunted with bow and with rifle. Today, hunters are cruel amateurs. They wound animals; they kill each other; they start fires. (Rim Fire to name one of three recent serious, hunterstarted fires in California.) People who don’t depend on wild animals for their food should not subject wild animals to being hunted down and killed. In states where game animals are overcrowding their territory and need thinning because they have no predators like wolves, they should be thinned by “professional hunters” who know what they are doing. The meat used to feed inmates. What grieves me most is hunting camps in the East and South. Hunters buy corn and set up a feeder station to draw the deer to their blind. Then they get to hunting season, they wait and slaughter them. Some half drunken “hunter” misses or wounds animals even then. “It’s a sport!” Hah,

Caramel apples, yum Re “Applecart tipping?” (News, Sept. 19): I have a tendency to fall victim to skillful advertising and public relations campaigns. When I see “Apple,” I think innovation, green and good (with the possible exception of using laborers who are slightly underage in China). I forget that they are a money grubbing, tax avoiding, socially irresponsible corporation as are most others.

Nice job of casting a little sunshine on Apple’s corporate policies and for jerking me back to a healthy state of cynicism. Apple and other corporations care nothing about you unless you happen to be a stockholder.

No enforcement I was crossing a crosswalk at Virginia and Thoma streets today and was nearly hit by a car that blew right by me. I was already in the middle of the crosswalk.

Normally, this wouldn’t be very shocking, as this crosswalk as well as all the Virginia street crosswalks seem to constantly have problems with people yielding to pedestrians at crosswalks (unless they’re the mayor). This time though, there was a Reno police officer directly behind the vehicle. Did she hit her lights? Hell no, she just kept on cruising. Jesus, how can we expect people to stop getting run over in crosswalks when the police are too lazy to pull people over when they’re directly behind them?

National health insurance: Good or bad?

Bad. It’s not something that I’m looking forward to. A lot of businesses, including my own, aren’t buying health care any more for the employees, and we have to find our own. And it seems like through the government, it’s just not the same quality.

False equivalence It’s pretty hard to imagine that this asinine government shutdown won’t be finished by the time this newspaper hits the newsstands. Of course, the same thing could have been said last week. So, just be aware that while the asinine government shutdown is the jumping off point for this expression of opinion, it’s only the jumping off point.

Much has been made of the idea of false equivalence with the shutdown. False equivalence, in journalism terms, is when a news source adds an opposing viewpoint on a level equal to another viewpoint expressed by a source in a story. Here’s an example that doesn’t necessarily include a bunch of traitorous assholes on Capitol Hill—although if you scratch it more than paint deep, it does emit a familiar odor.

Say 10,000 climate scientists say the Earth is warming, and it appears it is caused by humans.

Then, say 50 scientists in fields other than climate say the world is warming, and it appears to be because of undersea volcanoes.

Then, say a reporter at the New York Times quotes a scientist from each group. This gives the appearance of objectivity and balance to a reader who knows nothing of climate change. It gives the reader the impression that the two sides are roughly equivalent. Even if the reporter gives the 10,000 to 50 statistics, the words are what matters in the readers’ mind.

It’s a Gordian knot. If the reporter cuts the minority voice out of the story, readers and

I guess that remains to be seen. First reaction, though, is it’s bad. Our rates are just going up and if seems if we’re going to be doing something like that, it should come down. Besides that, all I know so far is I’m paying more for it.

advertisers complain that the report is unbalanced, the reporter biased. Even other journalists would complain—despite the fact that other journalists have read many reports that show that often those minority opinions have corporate backers. In our climate change example, it’s petroleum companies.

If the reporter points out the scientists’ conflicts of interest, those same corporate backers squeal that the reporter should have found an unbiased source to represent the minority view.

It’s public relations, folks. It’s spin. It’s a lie that’s been foisted upon the American people that a single piece of journalism can ever represent the whole truth.

It’s up to you, readers. Our democracy is based on the idea that you will read many articles about the things that matter to you. It used to be called “the marketplace of ideas,” and much First Amendment law is based on this concept.

Walter Cronkite didn’t know the truth, he was just one of the voices that offered a point of view.

The government of those days offered another. Time magazine offered another. The New York Times offered another. The American people took all those different ideas and came up with our own idea of truth about Vietnam.

The Republican Party on Capitol Hill is being manipulated by a minority of paid-off lackeys. That is the reason for the shutdown. That will be the reason for another debt ceiling crisis. Please forgive our lack of a misleading opposition viewpoint. Ω

To tell the truth It slipped out in an unguarded moment, as the truth often does.

Nevada Assembly Minority Leader Pat Hickey, R-Reno, was in the midst of a routine interview on KOH, right-wing talk radio.

He knows the format well, having by reported the news for the station in Sheila Leslie a previous life.

It’s easy to understand how it happened, in the relaxed broadcast booth where you don’t have to worry that people will be more focused on your hair than your words. What’s incomprehensible is the aftermath.

The conversation was barely controversial by KOH standards.

This is what Hickey said: “We have some real opportunities in 2014. It is a great year in a nonpresidential election. Seemingly no Democrats at the top of the ticket against Sandoval. No Harry Reid.

Probably where we had a million voters out there in 2012, we have 700,000. A lot of minorities, a lot of younger people will not turn out in a non-presidential. It is a great year for Republicans.”

In his glee, he didn’t realize anyone would find fault with the link between the last two sentences since this is a given in Republican circles, where little attention is paid to addressing the concerns of youth, minorities, or the poor.

Instead of sincerely apologizing Sometimes the truth doesn’t set you free: for the offensive statements that http://tinyurl.com/ seemed to celebrate the idea that pwkecnq. young people and minorities are less likely to vote next year, thus ensuring Republican victories, Hickey made the situation much worse by trying to explain it away.

As national media outlets started picking up the story, he went on Jon Ralston’s television show and pretended Democrats were inferring he was a racist.

In an attempt to showcase his family’s inter-racial composition, he made a crass and insensitive statement regarding his Sun Myung Moon-sanctioned marriage to a Korean woman: “I’m a white guy married to a yellow woman.” It makes me cringe to repeat it.

Within days, condemnation of his remarks were issued in official press releases by U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, Gov. Brian Sandoval, and his counterpart in the Nevada Senate, Minority Leader Michael Roberson. Rarely has the truth sparked such outrage between colleagues.

But Hickey and his former friends continued to miss the point, perhaps deliberately. There are very good reasons why minorities and young people are rejecting their party. One need look no further than last session when Republicans fought bitterly against a bill to extend the registration period (AB 440) and another making it easier to vote in person (AB 441). Both bills would have helped minorities and youth participate in the democratic process.

When they passed on mostly partyline votes, the governor vetoed the bills.

In committee remarks on a related bill, Hickey suggested the Legislature consider instituting an extra fee for those wishing to register to vote on Election Day, saying, “In the case of a passport request, when you come in past a deadline and you want it expedited, you pay an extra fee. I am wondering if we might consider having people pay for the privilege when they somehow managed to miss a deadline.” When reminded of the 1966 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that paying to vote is unconstitutional, he insisted he was just kidding.

Instead of running away from Hickey’s ill-considered remarks as fast as their carefully vetted news releases allowed, Republican leaders should have been spending more time considering why they’ve lost the support of young people and minorities. After all, the platitudes expressed in the scripted statements don’t fool a soul as virtually no one believes the Republican Party prioritizes the needs of youth, minorities, or lowincome people over creating more wealth for the already rich.

While actions do speak louder than words, in this case Hickey’s words matched up nicely with the Republican Party’s deeds. Ω

Shares of family income for non-elderly taxpayers

In the summer of 2001, a young white girl named Jody Olsen spent several days at a Christian conference on the Pyramid Lake tribal reservation. When her parents came to take her home, they stopped at the home of one of the tribal leaders.

When he came to the door, she greeted him in Paiute. Pleased, the elder commented that even young members of the tribe were unlikely to know the language.

The preservation of tribal languages is an ongoing battle fought every day by a few dedicated Native Americans. On Sept. 27, one warrior in that battle, Wesley Jim, died at South Lyon Medical Center in Yerington. He was known as a Paiute language keeper.

Born in Nixon, he was educated at Stewart Indian School and eventually settled in Schurz. He served in the Navy in World War II, receiving the Asiatic Pacific ribbon with 3 stars, the Philippine liberation ribbon with 2 stars, a Victory ribbon and the Purple Heart. He worked at the Walker River Indian Hospital for three decades.

In an email message to friends, Patrick Wilkes of Sutcliffe wrote, “He was an amazing man who worked tirelessly to preserve Paiute language, stories and songs with help from his wife Bea.” One admirer, Marlin Thompson, said, “Wesley was a fluent speaker of the Northern Paiute language, the Pyramid Lake dialect. He sang in the Paiute language and spoke the language excellently. He spoke whenever asked and prayed. He had an excellent knowledge of the old ways he learned from his grandfather. He also recorded songs in the Paiute language.”

Nevada seeks Israeli answers Israel experts in getting more out of little water are ready for a Nevada mission to their territory.

Gov. Brian Sandoval is leading a group of Nevadans to Israel’s Negev, a desert and semidesert region in the south, to learn more about indoor farming.

“One of the prominent areas of mutual interest is water management,” Uri Resnick, deputy consul general of Israel to the Southwest United States, told Jspace.com.

Nevada imports billions of dollars of food every year to feed tourists and has been in touch with the Israeli national water company, Mekorot, seeking assistance.

Poll makes questions easy In an opinion survey by Moore Information of Portland, commissioned by the Retail Association of Nevada, the following questions were asked: • “Do you think that the Nevada school system needs significant reforms in order to improve results?”

• “Do you think that the Nevada school system can be improved through increased spending?”

By gosh, respondents voted 70 percent for “reforms” to 18 percent for “increased spending.”

“Reforms” were never defined in pollster questions. It may have meant a return of corporal punishment or switching from 20th to 21st century textbooks—who knows? Respondents had no idea what it meant.

Nor was the purpose of “increased spending” ever explained.

Maybe it was for repairing leaking ceilings or for free cola in the cafeteria. That information was never given to respondents. They were just responding to buzzwords.

The poll also tilted questions on the new national health care program by using the loaded and colloquial term “Obamacare” in its language instead of “Affordable Care Act” or some generic term like “new federal health care program.” The questions began, “Do you believe that the Obamacare law will …”

Obamacare has been used as a pejorative term by Republicans. Some Democrats, including Obama, have also used the term, not always comfortably.

Low-income penalty Nevada socks it to the working poor There is a 6.6 percent difference in the amount paid in state and local taxes by families at the top of Nevada’s by economy when compared to those Dennis Myers at the bottom, according to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP), a Washington, D.C., research organization.

The 20 percent lowest income Nevada families pay 9 percent of their income in local taxes. The top 1 percent pay 2.4 percent.

Fred Lokken Political analyst The study is the latest to characterize Nevada’s tax structure as regressive—that is, as hitting lower income Nevadans the hardest. Or to put it another way, the richer you are, the less you pay.

But no matter how often it is described that way, the issue never seems to get traction in the state’s politics.

“Well, because those who suffer the most from regressiveness don’t vote,” said political analyst Fred Lokken. “They have the lowest turnout in the country.”

Jeri, a working mother in Sparks, stops at the Rainbow Market on Rock Boulevard on the Friday her paycheck comes out to fill her tank.

“I always hope that one tank lasts for the two weeks of my pay period,” she said.

She shops at the cheapest places she can find for retail goods, uses no air conditioning in summer and keeps the heat shut off as often as her children’s health allows it in winter, and actually uses something that is increasingly rare—a clothesline.

“I know about that [sales tax regressiveness]. I heard about it in government class in high school. I always figured it would get fixed when people realized it. I gave up on that a long time ago.”

“Yes, I vote,” she said. “But I would expect them to represent my needs even if I didn’t.”

She may be expecting too much.

“We’ve embraced the notion of dropping property taxes and making them as low as possible,” Lokken said.

That puts more and more pressure on sales taxes.

“We know the sales tax is regressive, and it’s highly sensitive to recession,” he said. “Pragmatism creeps in. If you’re going to put a bond issue on the ballot, good luck. For whatever reason, sales tax seems to be the tax that they can get away with.

And some legislators are proud—‘We protected the wealthy people.’”

It’s not always the lobbyists for the rich and powerful who saddle low-income people with higher sales taxes. When the first sales tax was created in Nevada in the 1950s, it was done under pressure from teachers’

lobbyists, whose own constituency would be hit hard by the tax.

The same thing happened in 1997 when labor union leaders joined businesspeople to support a sales tax hike to pay for a Colorado River pipeline in southern Nevada and floor control and a railroad trench in northern Nevada.

And Democrats were part of the support for a Republican neardoubling of the sales tax in 1981, the largest sales tax hike in state history.

“In essence you’ve got a small group of people turning out,” Lokken said. “The ones who do vote make sure the system stays the same.”

In some narrow situations, that’s particularly true. “Sparks, especially,” one activist said. That’s surprising because at one time Sparks, as a union stronghold, was very suspicious of sales taxes. These days, it is known as the Mecca of STAR bonds, which allow some businesses to, in effect, keep most of the sales taxes they generate, thus putting greater pressure on the taxes paid by residents who pay their full share.

Columnist and editor of NevadaLabor.com Andrew Barbano said Nevada is like a big company town.

“Nevadans have a bad case of political co-dependency,” he said. “We seem to enjoy being hurt by the ones who say they love us ... the casino owner who gladly cashes miners’ paychecks, then buys them a few drinks on Friday night. ... Nevadans have seen their governments pass out corporate welfare like candy and condoms. Why clutter your mind considering a tax increase, or a shift toward tax equity, or any tax-tinkering if you have hard evidence that the money will just be handed to some billionaire or corporate predator that doesn’t need it?”

Other people’s money The state also has a tradition of trying to fund government with tourism dollars.

“Our philosophy here in Nevada is always to have our taxes paid by tourists,” Lokken said, pointing out that this makes the state highly vulnerable when hard times come.

In recessions, which have occurred approximately every 10 years for the past four decades, the state has endured four major budget crises.

When the revenue from sales taxes take a dive, services that working people have paid for in good times are not always available because of shortfalls. And it’s not the wealthy

who get slammed with the financial impact when services are rebuilt as good times return.

Barbano said the sales tax also has trouble getting into the mainstream media because it’s not telegenic.

“Wild horses, gun control, potholes and abortion are easy, either/ or issues, suitable for television,” he said. “Taxes mean talking heads often speaking unintelligibly. Flip over to Wheel of Fortune.”

Democrats in other states have often pushed sales taxes as an issue of economic populism. But in Nevada, if they are interested in it at all, they want the press to go first. “I never see stories about the high sales tax anymore,” one member of the Washoe County Democratic Central Committee said.

Democrats are not likely to champion low-income voters in part because of their incessant “middle class” mantra and in part because the party is now so heavily corporate-funded.

“I once thought that an independently wealthy and liberal white knight could take on the system as an advocate of the weak and the small,” Barbano said. “I have been disappointed for more than 40 years because, to paraphrase Jefferson Airplane, the White Knight somehow always ends up talking backwards.”

Andrew Barbano Columnist For many years in the Nevada Legislature, no sales tax increase could get through because North Las Vegas Assemblymember Robert Price chaired the Assembly Taxation Committee and would stop any such hike. Price was one of the few Democrats who took an anti-sales tax stance. But then Assembly Speaker Joe Dini dumped Price as chair in favor of David Goldwater in order to clear the way for the train trench/water pipeline sales tax hike.

The ITEP survey excluded elderly taxpayers. ITEP spokesperson Matt Gardner said that was “because many states treat seniors very differently from non-seniors for tax purposes.

For example, Illinois taxes most income at a 5 percent rate, but completely excludes retirement income such as pensions and Social Security, which, of course, are enjoyed primarily by seniors. So if we included seniors in our analysis, that would make the overall effective income tax rate in Illinois appear lower than it really is for most families. In situations like this, we think including seniors would muddy the waters more than anything else.” Ω

Workshop about direct meat marketing stems from demand “It’s not simple,” said Wendy Baroli, farmer at GirlFarm/Grow For Me Sustainable Farm. “This isn’t for the faint of heart, and this isn’t for someone who wants instant satisfaction or immediate gratification. This is for the long by Sage Leehey haul. It’s a lifestyle change.”

She was talking about becoming a small farmer or rancher in the dry s age l@ conditions of Northern Nevada, but she believes there’s a local market for news review.c om these farms’ products.

“I would say to you, 10 years ago? No way. Today? Absolutely,” Baroli said. “The local food movement has made it so that you can actually be a small farmer or rancher in this area, but it’s up to us, as small farmers and ranchers, to do a good job and interact with the customer.”

Referencing the ideas of the book The Thankful Economy, Baroli explained that social media has made our society like a small town again.

She said she thinks people feel isolated in suburbia with “gates between us and our neighbors” and “gates between us and anyone who wants in to our neighborhood” and that people now crave communication and interaction with each other. This shift can allow for small farms to be successful at a local level.

“People really want to feel connected to their businesses, who they purchase from. People want to buy from people they like. So you have to come off of your tractor and create that small community on Facebook or Tumblr or any of those other social media sites. … And people will often return and pay more for someone who they know, who recognizes their kids or their dog or what your coffee is. If you do a really great job, you will create the loyalty and respect that small towns used to have.”

To help local farmers and ranchers achieve this, University of Nevada, Reno’s University Center for Economic Development (UCED) has partnered with Western Nevada College (WNC) for a workshop series based around direct and collaborative marketing of meat. The first in the series is called “Meat CSA [community supported agriculture] and Collaborative Meat Marketing Strategies” and is on Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at WNC’s Fallon campus. It costs $35 before Oct. 5 and lunch will be included.

Margaret Cowee, research analyst for UCED, explained that the collaborative and interactive subscription farm model creates more regular sales for producers and believes this workshop will greatly assist local farmers.

“Hopefully, this will expose more Reno area consumers to local meat products and give them another outlook in which to buy that stuff, and hopefully expand the customer base for our producers,” Cowee said. Ω

“Did you see the—I recommend you looking at Jimmy Kimmel Live, this YouTube on ‘Obamacare’ vs. the Affordable Care Act. It’s so funny! They interview all these people and they say, ‘Which one do you support? And they say, ‘Oh, Affordable Care, not Obamacare.’ ‘No, I don’t like anything about Obamacare, I want the Affordable Care Act.’ I mean, it’s sad, but it was very funny.”

It’s a quality that so many politicians lack these days, the ability to joke about things that, as issues, they consider serious. Guinan has seen some deadly serious things in her career, but her sense of humor remains intact.

She’s a typical Nevadan—a transplant. Born in Brooklyn and educated at Hunter College, the University of Texas Medical Branch, and Johns Hopkins University Medical School, she worked early in her career in smallpox eradication in India. Then after a fellowship at the University of Utah, she became a prominent herpes expert. She was a member of the early Centers for Disease Control team working on what would become known as AIDS. Somehow, in 1998, Nevada bagged her as its first woman state health officer. She said then that though other states had elaborate and planned health systems, Nevada did not, and it was a place where she felt she could help.

“I thought I could make a bigger impact in Nevada,” she said.

She brought fresh eyes to a Nevada whose health care community was often discouraged by the state’s miserly ways and poor reputation.

She didn’t realize then that Nevada’s health care system was not primitive by happenstance. It was by design. For decades, the Nevada Legislature had starved all human resource spending. There has long been a faction in the state that opposes social programs, tried to prevent their establishment, and contain their sizes when they could not be stopped. The legislature would create certain levels of service, and stop there.

Conservatives complain that Nevada receives far less from the federal government than it sends to Washington, D.C. The reason, though, reflects back on the state’s conservative policies—Nevada declines to participate in many federal programs, kissing off its residents’ share of federal benefits. “Other states are cutting things we don’t even have,” Sen. Sheila Leslie said in 2011. When the state did participate in federal programs, it was often after years of ignoring problems they addressed instead of dealing with them on a state level. For at least 60 years, Nevadans have found remedies to problems ranging from civil rights to pollution only after the federal government entered the picture.

Nevada is one of the most unhealthy states—one of the biggest challenges for the new national health insurance program. If that program works in Nevada, it can likely work anywhere. But there are plenty of people who are so jaded to Nevada’s lousy quality of life that they are not expecting another program to change anything fundamental.

Mary Guinan is not one of them. Her arrival in Nevada in 1998 was exactly what the state needed. Endlessly optimistic, she never doubted that the state’s poor quality of life and health could be improved.

That assumes those at the economic bottom will avail themselves of the Act. This assumption that one must embrace the policies in order to love the state is unacceptable but often used.

For a long time, the state’s changing demographics aided those who opposed social programs. Senior citizens poured into Nevada in the postwar years, seeking low taxes. In the 1980s, the Nevada Department of Education did polling that confirmed expectations—these elderly new residents tended to vote against school bond issues, suggesting a more general opposition to taxes. These residents were also heavy users of what social programs there were, putting two trends in conflict.

PasT is PROlOguE Nevada is a medical mess. It has become a local cliché to say that the Silver State is at the top of every bad list and the bottom of every good list. That problem has just been dropped on the federal doorstep.

For years, national rankings showed Nevada at the wrong end—teen pregnancy, prenatal care, suicide by senior citizens, suicide generally, tobacco use, tobacco-related death, alcohol- and drug-related death, firearms deaths, health insurance coverage (second worst in the nation, after Texas), homicide against women, toxic releases, child immunizations, infectious disease.

This year, whooping cough—a deadly disease that’s preventable—is rising in Nevada. Last year, every nursing home in the state was cited by inspectors. Whole swaths of the population—notably women and children—are deemed at greater risk in Nevada. Nevada minors are the most uninsured in the nation. There is a shortage of doctors and nurses. Some of these problems have been with the state for decades, even generations.

That is certainly true of mental health. In any other state, the Nevada mental health system would be a scandal. In Nevada, it’s the normal, decades-old way of doing business (“Tradition,” RN&R, April 25, 2013). The recent disclosure by the Sacramento Bee of patient dumping by Nevada is continuity.

crimes of all types, dropout rate. According to 24/7 Wall Street, “In general, the likelihood of not having health insurance is much higher for those without a high school diploma. In Nevada, due to a poor graduation rate, the chances of this happening are significantly worse.”

The health problems are susceptible to change. Teen pregnancy, immunizations and obesity have recently seen improvements in the state after education programs were launched.

But Nevada has rarely invested in such education programs. And the Affordable Care Act isn’t in the business of changing infrastructure, of creating programs or building facilities or training healthcare providers. Can it, merely by providing insurance, upgrade a state that could easily be named Downgrade?

ThE wORking POOR In 2003, Gov. Kenny Guinn wanted to make a dent in those national rankings. He won passage of significant tax increases and he and the legislature plowed more money into health programs.

Earlier, most of the state’s tobacco settlement was poured into health.

But since 2007, the old Nevada has reasserted itself. Under Gov. Jim Gibbons, spending of all kinds was slashed. The onset of the recession exacerbated the problem. Budget after budget was cut to cope with revenue shortfalls over a period of years. Higher education, which has a health role, was chopped by more than a third.

There are, of course, those who take criticism of the state’s government policies as criticism of the state itself. David Palmer last month wrote to this newspaper, “I suspect I may speak for more

She did two stints as Nevada state health officer, in 1998-2002 and 2008-2009, during

which she participated in the state response to a cancer/leukemia cluster in Churchill County, an anthrax scare in a Reno Microsoft office a month after 9/11, a 2007 hepatitis outbreak at a Las Vegas endoscopy center and the early stages of the H1N1 flu scare.

She learned some of the facts of life early.

“Nevada has not traditionally invested in prevention,” she told Associated Press in 2001. But she had been at the CDC during the years when the Reagan administration held down efforts to deal with AIDS and still saw things accomplished.

During, between and after her turns as health officer, she pushed for efforts to bring Nevada up to date. She can count a number of advances in public health in the state.

• The casino industry always clamped hard on the Nevada Legislature when anti-smoking legislation came up. So health advocates went around them and took the issue to the ballot, cautiously exempting casinos from its impact (and thus subjecting casino workers to their toxins). The public approved a ban on smoking in most public places.

Guinan still gets excited when describing the victory. “That was the most incredible thing that happened,” she said. “The number of heart attacks have decreased.

The ACA can facilitate the state improving its own infrastructure.

“That was one of the problems—we didn’t have the health insurance,” Guinan said. “Now we have the health insurance. We can hopefully increase the number of health care providers.”

The ACA has money for increasing health workforce development, training health care providers. But that requires state officials who opposed ACA in the first place to apply to expand its presence in the state.

Gov. Brian Sandoval, who opposes ACA, agreed to run a state exchange under the Act, though he had little choice—it was imposed on him by the legislature—and he said his reason for doing it was that otherwise the U.S. government would run it.

Guinan praises Sandoval for expanding the state’s Medicaid caseload. (Medicaid is a federal/ state low-income medical program.)

“We do have a shortage of doctors and nurses, but it’s always been that way,” she went on. “The Affordable Care Act will not directly affect it, but they will try to help you build the workforce. And that would hopefully—we will get money, maybe, to expand the medical school.”

her upcoming performance, Swan: A Poetical Inquiry in Dance, Text and Memoir, L. Martina Young will explore the depth of the image of swan. It’s her first full-length performance since her double hip replacement surgery three years ago. Swans have enraptured human imaginations throughout history and have been examined by artists of all disciplines.

For Young, the image of a swan called to her, and through deep artistic exploration, she’s responding with her performance on Oct. 18 and 19 at the Lighthouse Studio in the Riverside Artists Lofts. It’s the first of a threepart performance series.

“Swan is a mythopoetic image that appears in many cultures over history,” said Young.

“As an image, it came to me, and as an artist, I responded. I was able to see in my mind’s eye the breadth and depth of entering into engagement with the image and how it happens to resonate with this time of life for me as I approach my 59th birthday. I began investigating the image from many different points of view—from mythological sources, poets, painters, dancers and artists.”

Young’s lifetime of artistic exploration in movement started in Los Angeles as a young dancer. From there, her career took her across the globe to share her gift from New York to Paris. She’s equally at home as a scholar and has served on the faculties of the College of William and Mary, California State University, Dominguez Hills, California Institute of the Arts and served as the director of dance for the University of Nevada, Reno from 1988-1994. This year, Young celebrates 25 years in Nevada with Swan.

the work. It is that discovery, and in the dance, things are felt not only from the performer’s side, but also from the audience.

It is a communal experience that we will discover together— what it is about this image that possibly has some importance to our life and times right now as a quality of being?”

Young will perform with music played by Los Angelesbased electric violinist David Strother. The relationship adds yet another layer to the experience because they have been working together in art collaborations for the past 20 years.

In this performance, Young is addressing an attitude of slowing things down to deeply appreciate and feel a life experience in the moment. This contemplative approach to body movement is different specifically because it is not a current trend in dance nor in our fast-paced culture at large.

“It is a distinctly different approach into investigating movement and its possibilities in terms of experience for both of us—the audience and the performer,” said Young. “The resonance shouldn’t end with the end of the performance, something should carry on.”

Young is offering an open forum after the performance has ended so the audience can engage with the artist and articulate their thoughts and emotions in a free exchange between both parties.

“There will be a post-performance talk so that the audience and I can deepen into what just happen,” said Young. “A forum of exchange where we can mutually articulate what we have experienced. Particularly because … we need a way in and a way out. We take for granted too much. People love the opportunity to ask questions, and they want to delve into the experience through expressing what they have just felt. This offers us both an additional mode of engagement; multiple modes of engagement to help deepen into ‘something.’ It’s gives us the opportunity to explore what we have just witnessed with our eyes and hearts and articulate it with our words.” Ω

Her inquiry into the image of the swan is not about literally dancing like a long-necked water fowl. For her, the grace, beauty and sensuality of the swan connotes a quality of life.

As Young says these qualities are further fleshed out in the mythologies, danced, written and sung about swans over time.

For example, The Dying Swan, choreographed in 1905 by Mikhail Fokine for the ballerina Anna Pavlova is a touchstone piece in the ballet world for its emotional expression of a swan in her last moments of life. Pavlova performed the piece over 4,000 times in her career. It has inspired many modern interpretations of Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet Swan Lake, including Natalie Portman’s visceral performance of Odette’s demise in the 2010 film Black Swan. Young is keen to acknowledge the lineage of her art, as she is moved by the work of past artists to help build on and inform her own work.

Evolution, beauty, maturity, sensuality, grace—these are a few of the qualities Young hopes to explore in her performance. When speaking with her about the research she dived into for this work, one is struck by the magnitude of study she conducted over the years to flesh out and understand her creative response to the image.

“Swan reveals the further deepening and renewed creative imagining of a mature, bona fide artist who is reveling in her ongoing work,” said dance educator Diane Rugg in a quote posted on Young’s website. “Her subtle, deep and deceptively simple movement material gently suggests rebirth, renewal and the continuing exploration essential to a fully lived human life.

Martina’s performance of the work, grounded in her own deep knowing is profound in its ability to engage and fully translate to the viewer, such that I was moved to tears.”

Audience members at the performances will also receive a book of text including Young’s writing and research about swans.

“Clearly the image resonates deeply with the human imagination and therefore calls to certain qualities,” said Young. “As an artist, it is my job to be responsive and investigate—what does swan want me to know and what is it in the culture that is asking to learn from this quality of life swan represents? That’s

Second Annual Craft Brewers Festival American craft-brewed beer nearly went extinct during the dry days of prohibition. But by after decades of cultivating yeast and Clint Demeritt malting barley, American beer is as diverse and rich as the country itself. To that end, the good health of Nevada’s craft brewing ecology was on display during the Second Annual Craft Brewers Festival, which took place Oct. 5.

“It’s really exciting to see all these other breweries come into the state and start up,” said event organizer Doug Booth, sales manager for Great Basin Brewing Company. “We’re really excited to work with them, collaborate with them and put Nevada on the map as far as great beer.”

Booth said the event was held to highlight and support Nevada breweries, and only Silver State institutions were featured. Hundred of attendees visited the 17 brewery tents from all over the state. As beer flowed into tasting glasses, around 66 varieties were poured, from golden lagers to pitch-black porters.

Two specialty beers were created for the event, a collaboration between Northern and Southern Nevada breweries. Southern hop-heads brought up “Rebel Rye Sin,” a spicy India Pale Ale. Northern brewers concocted the “Northern Ryeghts,” consisting of four different types of rye malts and wood essence gathered from local mahogany trees.

Crowd pleasers included Great Basin’s Hop-a-saur Double IPA, as well as Peace, Love and Hoppyness Pale Ale from Vegas brewer Big Dog Brewing Co. Other notable beers included the Raspberry Red from High Sierra Brewing Co. and Old Jackalope Barleywine from Tenaya Creek Brewery.

With so many different types of craft beer on tap, the question of what defines a craft brew comes up. Though the beverage genus can be a bit hard to pin down, many brewers and beer drinkers related craft beer to smaller production runs, quality ingredients and complex flavors.

Technically, a craft brewery produces less than 6 million barrels of beer per year.

But Josh Watterson, the head brewer at

Reno’s Brasserie Saint James, sees the cut-off at 100,000 or less barrels, along with some other key traits.

“I think a craft brewery is someone who takes the best ingredients on a small scale so they can really dive into the beer,” Watterson said.

Those types of breweries have been popping up all over the state, from Joseph James Brewing in Henderson, to High Sierra Brewing Co. in Carson City, along with 6-month-old Stoneyhead Brewing Co. here in Reno.

With so much beer flowing from new outlets in the state, Nevada has been experiencing a real brew revolution.

“Craft brewing is becoming huge,” said Paul Michelini, a brewer with Stoneyhead.

Michelini said though his brewery is less than a year old, it has already started to see some revenue returns. Other signs of craft beer’s rising popularity can be seen all

over the state. Bottled beer sales are strong, according to Tenaya Creek and Great Basin, which both started bottling their own beers a few years ago.

Michelini said the brew fest was a great way to get lesser known breweries in front of the public. He said the festival is hopefully only the beginning.

The proceeds of the event will go into the coffers of the Nevada Craft Brewers Association. With its new charter, the association aims to proliferate craft beer in the state with more events and community engagement. The association was also set up to eliminate many of the legal obstacles that stand in brewers’ ways.

Many brewers in the association were excited about putting together a beer map for the state of Nevada. The map would point out local breweries and pubs for thirsty tourists and locals. Breakfast and lunch are the mainstays, but the Café offers dinners on Friday and Saturday. Walk in to a cozy, art deco revival throwback décor with seating for 34 people and a butcher-block eat-at counter with room for eight. The staff is all energy and, no question, they love where they are and what they do.

Schuster, who creates everything on the menu, emphasizes that she takes great care to buy as much organic, local product as possible, and even her meats and poultry are organic certified humane (standards require nutritious diets without antibiotics or hormones, animals raised with shelter, resting areas, sufficient space and the ability to engage in natural behaviors).

The menu is really pretty simple but took a lot of thought, and just about everything on it can be swapped for gluten-free and vegan at no additional cost. Schuster created the menu to make everyone feel good about ordering anything without worrying about special diet considerations—truly a “one-sizefeeds-all” menu.

At breakfast, naturals like cinnamon swirl French toast ($6), DeLuxe Scramble ($8) with home fries and fresh veggies, muesli ($4) organic oats ($4), a basic breakfast ($7), or my choice, an egg taco ($4 each). It came on an organic corn tortilla with melted cheddar cheese, fried egg, black bean salsa, sour cream and avocado. From the maize base to the sour cream atop, the layers of flavor were tasted with every bite. From corn to the savory bean salsa to the rich, buttery flavor of the avocado finished with the slightly tart, sour cream, a very satisfying nosh and just the right size for breakfast.

That brings me to another refreshing nuance about this place, Schuster designed all the servings to have “reasonable portions,” not wasting huge amounts of food that people don’t finish.

For lunch, they offer homemade soups daily ($3.50/cup-$4.50/bowl), salads, like kale with lemon, salt and olive oil ($4.50), topped with avocado and chopped almonds and a scoop of quinoa for a couple bucks more. My pick was the goddess ($6.50), generous with organic greens, cucumber, shredded carrots, shredded beets, garbanzo beans, sunflower sprouts and seeds, and avocado with lemon tahini dressing. It was Mother Nature’s bounty at its best—fresh. The dressing with the sesame seeds paste, a bit of garlic, lemon and spice made a great savory-tart complement.

There’s a simple, but creative selection of hot and cold sandwiches ($5-$6.50) and specialties ($6.50$7.50) plus a kid’s menu ($3-$4).

Apple cheddar melt ($5.50) caught my eye with Granny Smith apples, Tillamook sharp cheddar, bacon (extra $2) toasted open face on sourdough with a homemade Dijon mustard.

This rekindled an old tradition of marrying cheddar cheese with apple pie; throw in bacon and accessorize with tart, slightly bold mustard, and you have easily tasted flavors that are delicious memories for anyone over 50. Just a few wines and a few beers, and organic juices. I tried the housemade chai tea ($3.50) and found the cardamom and ginger and perhaps a little local honey most pleasing.

Schuster believes an individual’s neighborhood should serve a vital role in terms of offering camaraderie and acting as a support system, and have one common place people could gather and be … neighborly. Ω

Space is the place Gravity Finally, with Gravity, we get a big event movie that delivers the sort of thrills absent from too many large-scale movies promising big things this year. If you put this movie in your face, you are going to have a cinematic trip like no other. This is what going to the movies is supposed to be about.

I sound like a movie critic quote machine, and I don’t care. I want to make this perfectly by clear: YOU MUST SEE THIS MOVIE! Bob Grimm And shell out the extra few bucks for 3-D, because the whole idea of this film is to physibgrimm@ newsre view.c om cally make you feel like you are lost in space.

This is an example of a 3-D movie where those glasses really add to the experience. The way this film is shot often puts you inside a spacesuit looking down at the Earth or, if the movie character happens to be drifting and tumbling in space, looking out of a space helmet as the Earth rhythmically passes by your view as you are flipping over and over.

If you are one of those people currently getting nauseated by your iPhone IOS 7 update and all of those crazy moving graphics, you might want to go see Don Jon instead, because this sucker has a lot of movement.

In her first true blue science fiction role since Demolition Man, Sandra Bullock puts herself through the wringer as Ryan Stone, an astronaut on her first space shuttle flight.

Her mission commander, played by a charismatic and calming George Clooney, ribs her about her upset tummy as he flies around space in a jet pack while she works tirelessly on the Hubble.

They receive an ominous message from Earth. The Russians have purposely destroyed one of their satellites, and this has set off a chain reaction destroying multiple satellites and creating loads of fast moving space debris.

At first, they’re told it shouldn’t be a problem.

Moments later, they revise that theory and let the astronauts know that they appear to be totally screwed.

The space debris collides with their shuttle, and the movie is off and running. Director Alfonso Cuaron delivers the action seamlessly, often as if it were all one shot, and the effect is unrelenting. When Ryan reaches out to grab something to prevent herself from spinning out into space, you will be straining right along with her.

Cuaron isn’t all about the thrills, either. He and son Jonas have written a screenplay that packs plenty of emotional wallop along with the thrills. Bullock, who has gone public with how difficult the shoot was, is both physically and emotionally taxed, and her haunting performance will surely put her in Oscar contention.

Actually, just about every aspect of this film should find itself in an Oscar race, from the astronomical cinematography, to the gripping writing, and the amazing feats achieved through sound.

Gravity would actually be a trippy experience if you took it in with your eyes closed.

What Cuaron and his crew do with sound will astound you.

Clooney, in a part that originally went to Robert Downey, Jr., looks like a guy who should be floating around in space, doesn’t he?

The man’s mug just screams “Astronaut!” The actor appears to relish every second he spends on screen.

His Matt Kowalski is on his last mission, sharing stories, trying to break spacewalk records, proving his iron resolve and pervading good nature even when space debris has just whizzed by his head and pulverized his spacecraft.

In honor of this momentous cinematic achievement, I don’t wish to draw comparisons to any other films. Gravity is its own beautiful beast, a singularly unique experience that will leave you beyond satisfied, and very happy you didn’t wait to watch it in your living room.

See Gravity on the biggest, boldest screen available to you, and prepare to have your mind blown. Ω

Don Jon

Joseph Gordon-Levitt writes, directs and stars in this frank sex comedy about a sex addict who thinks porn is better than true romance. Gordon-Levitt is excellent and consistently funny as the title character, a Jersey boy who’s quite the stud, yet finds himself jerking off to internet porn within mere minutes of finishing with a live woman.

His little problem comes to the forefront when he meets Barbara (Scarlett Johansson), the first real love of his life, a woman with high standards who doesn’t approve of the porn thing. The movie is full of porno clips, so don’t see it with kids or a first date, unless you and that first date already have some sort of naughty understanding. Gordon-Levitt has given us something akin to a funnier Saturday Night Fever, with porn replacing disco.

Julianne Moore is her usual excellent self in a supporting role, and the shock casting of Tony Danza as Don’s dad proves smart. Danza gets to show some cinematic comedy chops that he hasn’t been able to show off before. This is an overall triumph for Gordon-Levitt.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2

This is animation done with all the style and grace of a spastic colon saturated with hot sauce. While the first film in this series had a reasonable amount of charm, this one goes haywire from its start right until the finish line. Bill Hader returns as the voice of Flint, the overly excited inventor who, in the first movie, managed to use a crazy invention to inundate his hometown with giant food. Now, the machine has gone nuts, creating a race of living food including cheeseburger spiders and dolphin bananas. The film boasts an intolerably frantic pace, with a plotline that’s scattered beyond reasonability. It’s hard to follow, but it does have the occasional fart and poop joke to make the kids laugh. The only character I managed to enjoy was a jittery monkey trying to put out a sparkler, and that accounts for about 30 seconds of the film. Don’t waste your time and, trust me, your kids won’t like it either.

Insidious: Chapter 2

Director James Wan was on a bit of a roll with the first film in this series and his recent The Conjuring. That roll doesn’t simply come to a halt with this film. That roll crashes into a concrete, steel enforced wall that Jesus himself built while reminiscing about his carpentry days. This latest attempt to make a haunted house movie with next to no money is a hilarious catastrophe. Wan basically uses the same tricks, including smoke machines, green lights, practical makeup and crappy music, to try and get scares out of a formula that clearly had a short shelf life. This one involves Josh (Patrick Wilson), the father from the first film acting a little strange after his trip into another dimension to retrieve his son. His wife (Rose Byrne) suspects that, gosh darn it, something must be wrong because there are still funny things happening with her baby monitor. The movie wants to be a poor man’s The Shining, with Wilson going all Nicholson wacky and Byrne doing her best Shelley Duvall impersonation. It’s terrible, but it’s a big moneymaker, so, as with the Paranormal Activity films, this isn’t going to stop anytime soon.

Lee Daniels’ The Butler

Director Lee Daniels, prominently mentioned in the film’s title after a much publicized lawsuit, delivers a fine emotional wallop with this historical epic very loosely based on the life of Eugene Allen, a butler at the White House for 34 years. Those going to this film for its true historical significance take note: the film contains much fiction. Allen is renamed Cecil (played by Forest Whitaker), and is given a fictional son in order to depict a family conflict regarding the Civil Rights movement. So, this film, which shows the butler interacting with presidents from Eisenhower (Robin Williams) thru Ronald Reagan (Alan Rickman), is mostly made up. That doesn’t hurt the film’s dramatic significance. It’s an ultimately moving experience. What does damage the film a bit is horrible makeup, especially a goofy fake nose for John Cusack as Richard Nixon. The makeup is sometimes so bad that the film turns into unintentional comedy when some characters are on screen. Whitaker holds the whole thing together, and Oprah Winfrey, in her first starring role since her excellent turn in Beloved, does strong work as

Cecil’s wife. Other stars playing presidents include a relatively makeup-free James Marsden as John F. Kennedy, and an absolutely covered Liev Schreiber as Lyndon B. Johnson.

Prisoners

For a good part of its running time, this one seems as if it could wind up being one of 2013’s best pictures. Alas, it frays at the end, with a finale as stupid as the rest of the film is gripping. Hugh Jackman delivers a fierce performance as Keller Dover, a survivalist who goes into vigilante mode after his daughter and her friend are kidnapped. When a semi-irritable detective (Jake Gyllenhaal) apprehends a mentally challenged suspect (Paul Dano), Dover and the detective go head-to-head on how to deal with matters. When the suspect is set free, Dover captures and tortures him.

This part of the film is solid, dealing with the lengths a parent would go to find a child. As for the film’s mystery element, that’s where things fall apart. Gyllenhaal is quite good here, even when the screenplay lets him down. The movie was shot by Roger Deakins, so it always looks good. It’s worth seeing, but it’s a bit of a disappointment.

Runner Runner

Was the world aching for a movie about online gambling? If so, was it aching for a movie about online gambling where Justin Timberlake gets beaten up a lot while looking really scared most of the time as Ben Affleck feeds poultry to his pet crocodiles? Timberlake plays a college student making his tuition through online gambling. After possibly getting hustled, he travels to Costa Rica to get in the face of the guy in charge of the gambling site (Affleck). He winds up getting a job and thrusting himself into a seedy online gambling underworld that involves running around a lot and acting real confused. Timberlake is an actor who can look really good, or really, really lost. This time he’s in lost mode. As for Affleck, I kind of like him in this movie, and enjoy when he plays bad guys. The movie lets him down in a big way with its silly subplots and failed attempts at being clever.

Rush

Hollywood has a real hard time making car-racing movies even remotely compelling. The latest genre misfire comes from director Ron Howard, who brings the true story of James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) to the big screen in surprisingly ho-hum fashion. The surprise comes in that the story itself is so amazing, it wouldn’t’ seem possible to render it dull, yet Howard manages just that. For a racing movie, surprisingly little of the film actually takes place on the racetrack. Instead, too much of the film is devoted to routine love stories that seem to be a means of saving budget.

Bruhl is decent as Lauda, a determined man who returned to racing mere weeks after being severely burned in a near fatal crash.

Hemsworth is charming as Hunt, but little more. Their rivalry was one of the greatest in sports history, yet this movie turns it into a soap opera.

We’re the Millers

Jason Sudeikis plays a small-time drug dealer who gets in over his head and is forced by his boss (Ed Helms) to smuggle drugs from Mexico. Realizing that border agents seem to go easy on families, he hires a fake family to make the trip in an RV. The family includes a wife (a stripper played by Jennifer Aniston), a daughter (a homeless girl played by Emma Roberts) and a son (a hapless neighbor played by Will Poulter). The film has a Vacation movie vibe, especially because Sudeikis is charming in a way that Chevy Chase was for a brief time in his career. Aniston plays a mighty good stripper, for sure. She has another calling in case the whole acting thing doesn’t work out. Roberts gets perhaps her best role yet as Casey, delivering some great eye-rolling moments. As for Poulter, he steals scenes nearly every time he speaks, and his encounter with a tarantula is priceless. Sure, the movie gets a little gooey and sentimental by the time it plays out, but we’ve come to like the characters by then so it’s OK. It’s not a grand cinematic effort by any means, but it does provide some good laughs, with a fair share of them being quite shocking.

Hear new evil Countress “We started this band to celebrate everything evil,” says guitarist Ryan Young of the Reno band Countress. “We try to by Brad Bynum do Slayer and Sabbath every song.”

vocalist Miles Lundahl, and bassist Joseph Stanislaus Küster VI, who swears that’s his real name and not just the results of some internet heavy metal name generator. These musicians move from slow, heavy doom metal into fast, upbeat thrash, and then into a midtempo metal groove, with a noisy blast beat thrown in there somewhere for good measure. But the music is not hyperactive genre-cutting. The songs are cohesive and what’s more, catchy.

“We try to make metal that’s written like pop songs,” says Young.

“We’ve always said that we want to write Motown hits, but in a metal way,” says Garcia.

The songs have pop song structures and recognizable hooks, with guitar riffs that stay humming in a listener’s head long after the songs are over. But it’s all delivered at high volume, with dense chunks of sound and aggressive energy.

“Transition from the machine gun to the shotgun—rapidfire to slow fire,” says Lundahl, adding that he plays a lot of video games.

by horrors from movies or real life. “Origin” is about conspiracy of reptilian shapeshifters, “Black Glove” is about the Heaven’s Gate cult, and “High Moon” is a Wild West tale.

The band’s name was partly inspired by the 1971 Hammer Horror movie Countess Dracula. The band added the “r” to differentiate from the dozens of other bands using the name Countess. But the band members say the neologism has raised a few eyebrows since it looks like a typo. (Apple technology autocorrects the name to “Countless.”)

“We get a lot of slack for that,” says Garcia. “People say, [sarcastically] ‘What is a countress?’

Whatever.”

“Torche isn’t a real word,” says Lundahl. “Metallica isn’t a real word.”

“Originally, we were going to be called Metallica Also,” says Garcia.

The band members are apparently charismatic. While standing outside their practice place during their interview with the RN&R, a bevy of good-looking women walked up to the band members just to give them free bottles of beer and wine. It was pretty baller.

They’ve been a band for more than a year, and have already recorded fairly extensively. They’ve recorded a full-length album, Ov Sin, which the plan to release before the end of the year. Last year, for Halloween, they released a twosong EP called Crawling from the Grave, which they recorded with well-known local producer and recording engineer Tom Gordon.

They hope to add new songs to the EP every year on Halloween. The songs on Crawling from the Grave are inspired by famous crimes in Nevada history. One of the songs in the first batch was called “Mesmerizer,” about the two young men from Sparks who shot themselves in 1985, which their parents famously alleged was inspired by subliminal messages in Judas Priest’s music.

One of this year’s Crawling from the Grave songs was inspired by the Mizpah Hotel burning down on Halloween, 2006. At press time, the band members still hadn’t agreed on a title for the song, though “Destruction Miz Population” is a strong contender. Ω

WORLD PARTY Idan Raichel Project

Artown’s 2013-2014 Encore Series kicks off with a performance by the Israeli singersongwriter and his collective of musicians from a variety of cultural origins. The members of the Idan Raichel Project have become global ambassadors representing a hopeful world in which artistic collaboration breaks down barriers between people of different backgrounds and beliefs. A household name in Israel, Raichel is a composer, keyboardist and producer and has performed with Alicia Keys, collaborated with India.Arie on several musical projects and has performed for President Barack Obama. Idan Raichel Project’s latest album, Quarter to Six, features guest appearances by Portuguese fado star Ana Moura, Palestinian-Israeli singer Mira Awad, German counter-tenor Andreas Scholl, Colombia’s Marta Gómez, Vieux Farka Touré and a selection of some of Israel’s up-andcoming singers and musicians. Reno Fright Fest Presents Slaughter House

The second annual event features hundreds of hand-carved pumpkins, which will be lit and put on display. Costumed volunteers will pass out candy and treats to kids as they walk along the trail at the Wilbur D. May Museum and Arboretum. Hot chocolate and cider will be served after the walk. The trail is stroller and wheelchair accessible. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes to get in the spirit of the season. The annual Halloween attraction returns for another year of terror at its new location under the Rise Nightclub, 210 N. Sierra St., in downtown Reno. Social notworking My 40-something younger brother has been “friending” my hot female friends on Facebook, women I have befriended in real life who he’s never even met! I said nothing at first. Then, one of these women posted a photo of herself, and I commented on it in a flirtatious way. Up pops my brother, commenting on my comment in a way that killed her ability to respond to me and adding a personal message to me, “Hey, bro, call me when you’re up.” I was upset that he’d butted into my conversation with her, and I don’t think her page is a place for him to leave messages to me. I asked him to remove his comment, and he was upset and insulted.

Shouldn’t etiquette standards apply online, too? If I’m having a face-to-face conversation with someone, it’s considered rude to just walk up and butt in. And, isn’t it a little creepy that my brother trolls my Facebook page and “friends” women he’s never met?

Facebook brings a lot of people closer, like the hot women you’ve gone to the trouble of developing friendships with in real life and your brother, who’s gone to the trouble of paying his electric bill and turning on his computer.

Hot women on the internet—those who don’t take credit cards for their friendship—can be pretty guarded.

Luckily, your brother shares your last name, so instead of your hot friends seeing his friend request and thinking “Eek, who’s this perv?” they probably think something like, “Oh, how adorable. Joe Blow has a little brother, Bo Blow.” As unfair as it seems that your brother logged in to Facebook and sat there in his underwear helping himself to a salad bar of your female friends, you seem to have misunderstood something about the nature of Facebook conversations. “Facebook” is not the name of a romantic restaurant where you’ve booked a table for two. You’re having these flirtatious exchanges at a “table” for, oh, 547 of a woman’s closest friends—along with any “friends” she might’ve made through those friends. This might explain why they call it “social networking” and not “social isolation.”

No, your brother shouldn’t turn some woman’s Facebook page into the digital version of the write-on/ wipe-off board your mom used to have by the kitchen phone. Because he got to this woman through you, this makes you look bad by association. So, you aren’t wrong to want him to change his message-leaving behavior, and you can call dibs if there’s one particular woman you’re putting the moves on. But telling someone what to do, even when a demand is phrased as a

request (to remove the comment, in this case), generally doesn’t inspire him to say, “Right, I was a jerk. I’ll change, pronto!” It makes him angry, hurt and defensive.

A more effective approach is telling him you feel bad about something he’s doing, evoking his sympathy.

That’s probably your best bet for getting him to back off a bit from your Facebook harem, considering it’s a little late to put your privacy settings on lockdown and way late to take the age-old approach to brotherly conflict resolution: “Maaaaa! Bro’s stealing all my hotties—just like he stole my firetruck 45 years ago!”

Battle of the divulge My boyfriend won’t “friend” my friends or relatives on Facebook. He says he doesn’t want to worry about censoring his posts or friends’ comments. Well, I have a handful of friends, and now a brother and a cousin, who’ve told me that he never responded to their friend request, and I worry that they’ll think he is rude or doesn’t like them.

Your boyfriend probably prefers your brother remember him for the wonderful way he helped your granny and not for how he looks in that photo his friend likes to post—the one where he’s passed out on someone’s bathroom floor with a bra draped across his chest and “Princess” written across his face with a Sharpie.

Although privacy is reportedly dead, it’s his right to be one of those holdouts who refuses to be a 24-hour gas station of personal information. The problem comes in his ignoring your friends and family—tossing their friend requests in the internet landfill with all the personal messages from African warlords with $19 million in diamonds to share with a trustworthy total stranger. Tell your boyfriend you’re afraid feelings are getting hurt, and suggest he message people back with something like, “Thanks, but I mainly use Facebook to stay in touch with a few old friends. Hope to see more of you in real life.” It’s gracious but boundary-maintaining, and if you break up, his lack of connectedness should provide a healthy barrier between him and explosive revelations about your new boyfriend, such as what he had for lunch. Story of the year Jessi LeMay, among many other things, is a person who has had a great idea. She wants to crowdsource Reno’s stories as a way to reflect and preserve Reno’s personality through people’s individual experience—sort of performance art for the common person. She’s planning to do this through a series of public storytelling events. The first is “Truly Scary Reno Stories” at the Potentialist Workshop, 2275 Dickerson Road, on Oct. 29 at 7-9 p.m.

Tell me about yourself.

I am by trade a photographer. That’s the bread and butter of what I do for my forprofit businesses, like wedding photography. My background is in photography, I got my degree in it. While I’m like some photographers, and I kind of poo-poo the idea of being a wedding photographer, it is the art of storytelling. There is nothing like shooting 20-30 weddings a year that has helped me hone my craft.

Twenty to thirty weddings a year? That sound horrible!

And now that I have a child, I really would like to handpick the stories that I tell. And that’s really the inspiration behind this nonprofit. It’s me wanting to do the kind of work I want to do. Last year in March, I started The Folk and the Lore Incorporated. The purpose of it is to document, archive and retell people’s stories in our community. We do it through photographic essays, short films and live storytelling events. For this month’s event, which is October 29, the theme will be “scary stories.” Every month we’ll be hoping to have themes that kind of pertain to what’s going on. In November, that theme will be Farm, Fork, Family, kind of all about bringing food from the farmers.

Let’s go back to the beginning when you started. How did you come up with this idea?

The genesis of the idea basically was inspired by the hours of editing that I spend in front of my computer listening to podcasts. There’s a real trend in storytelling events across the country.

I thought, “You know, I think I can do this.” Most of those podcasts are audio in nature, most of them don’t bring in a visual element, and I thought, “I can do this,” and it would be really beneficial to our community, too. For me, I believe that everyone’s collective stories become part of our own lore, become a product of who our community is. And so that was the genesis.

So you had the idea. Did you immediately decide you had to do a nonprofit? What was the next step?

For the nonprofit? There will be up to four storytellers on stage. And I say “up to” because people have committed, but until they get onstage, I’m a little worried.

Exactly. And then I will be producing three short films. And we’re in the process of making those short films, and none of them will be launched until the event. And that’s why the website is a little bare.

And what kind of stories do those people have?

Because they’re based on the theme for the month—Scary stories out of Reno.

They’re all sort of paranormal or terrifying stories. It’s a scary process. You know, you get interest from people who are really super excited about participating, but again, the success of the event is sort of left up to serendipity. Will it be a success when everything comes together, and people come on stage, and you have to just trust that people will not freak out when they’re onstage, and that people are excited about telling their own story, and it’s sort of a conversational moment with the audience. I have to trust that, but I also have to sort of vet their stories, and the stories need to be between 10-15 minutes, and they have to follow a format. They have to have a beginning, a middle and an end, and have a bit of an arc in the story so that people are invested in it.

I certainly see how you would not want your passion to prevent you from feeding that child, for example. I’m interested in how the nonprofit formation came about. Was this guy who was able to help you a lawyer or were you able to do this on your own?

He is a lawyer. I don’t want to divulge too much because I don’t know how much he would want anyone to know. how much he helped me. And the other part of this is, in my for-profit business, I’ve started doing short films. So I do birth announcement films, I also do short documentaries for people who want to get their legacy and their own, like, life story on film. But there are so many people out there who have really interesting history and even their short stories, would never be able to afford service, or would even consider paying for that. So that’s my goal with the nonprofit, to be able to reach everyone.

Voices from the Past

The Virginia City Cemetery comes alive with the 19th century Comstock residents. They share their stories, lives, and deaths. The performance will last 90 minutes as you walk through the cemetery with the widow of Silver Terrace as your guide.

So how many stories have you collected so far?

The reason I went with a nonprofit was because I have a friend who, when he worked in D.C., he helped a lot of people form nonprofits and get tax-exempt status. He’s the one who said to me, “You know, instead of this just being a project that you work on and spend your own money on, this is something that corporations and different businesses in the community might want to donate to.

It’s a benefit for the community, it has an educational purpose. Why not try it as a nonprofit?” We’re still in the process of getting our 501(c)3 status, but we are technically a nonprofit in the state of Nevada. I love that idea, that it’s sort of a contribution that everybody—you know—companies and individuals can say, “I support this.” And out of that, they get to hear and participate in these stories. I see it as a bigger project than something as a for-profit will be able to do.

How did they find you or how did you find them?

All of it has been opening my mouth about it nonstop. And asking. Asking strangers, hunting through people I know in the community, really it’s word of mouth. Ω
