When the music’s over

A mockery and a sham

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I can get some weird shit going in my head sometimes. Last night, I was wondering whether it’s better to live by one’s nature or to die.

Two things sent my mind in this direction. First, a friend called me on my Alzheimer’s suicide threat from that 23andme story we published the other week. He’s got it, and he says the meds will keep him going for a long time.

The other thing is that two of our cats came up missing. We suspect the worst: Coyotes. We live on the rim of a canyon.

First, I’m quite willing to say I’d manage Alzheimer’s for as long as I could with medications.

Still, I have no moral compunctions against suicide, but I do have moral compunctions against being a burden to my family. To me, the idea that the state could consider it a crime to end one’s own life is proof of how free we human beings really are. But I have this idea that death is not as certain for us as it was 50 years ago.

We live in an age of wonders, and it won’t be long until we’re replacing organs with organs grown from our own stem cells or downloading our psyches into hard-drives with hands.

I have every intention of living to be 300 and then making a decision.

So, if I was a cat, would I rather have lived one year coming and going as a free creature or never have enjoyed a blue sky? I knew those cats a year ago before they gained the freedom of a cat door, and I can tell you they were much happier climbing trees and laying on the deck rail than they ever were pissing in a basement. In my life, it’s the danger that has always added spice, and I know someday, it’s the physical universe that’s going to transmute my energy. But if I was a cat, would I forsake the outdoor life I’ve lived for incarceration and a longer life?

I don’t think so. I’m with Socrates on this one. If there’s nothing coming after, then life is not even a dream. But if there is something to come, what cowards are we to hide from it?

While suspension of disbelief is fundamental to the movie-going experience, I felt Simon Pegg’s character, Gary King, unlike those he portrayed in films mentioned above, was just too hard to believe. No one drives like that for very long! And for a person with no visible means of support, his teeth were too nice (that excellent British health care system?). Also, consumption of the proverbial “mass quantities” left all imbibing characters surprisingly capable (constant infusions of adrenalin, perhaps?). Since the protagonist Gary King is presumed to be a functional alcoholic, I could perhaps be persuaded of his endurance, but the others? Not so much.

I could go on, but all this actual thinking is making my head hurt.

Would I nonetheless recommend this movie (as they say in previews these days, “for appropriate audiences”)? Absolutely. The best of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg’s efforts to date? As you observed, Shaun was better, and from my seat in the theater, they have done better. And before I forget, the experience of watching with a crowd of enthusiastic fans is hard to beat. Let’s get out to the theaters, people! I always go to Grimm’s work in RN&R first. Best wishes.

Did single people get any benefits?

Why should homosexuals without kids get same benefits as married folks? Homosexual marriage is tax fraud, and what’s to now stop all single folks from entering into marriage with next door neighbors or roommates, the gas station guy, the girl at the checkout line? [They would] only have to get together once a year. [They’d] make about $10,000 more apiece, more if “partner” has kids, which you don’t have to pay child support. Enjoy, as we single folk here are fixing a huge lawsuit for equal protection, as any two people can get together for a business marriage of tax fraud.

Homosexuals have turned marriage into a mockery and a farce. We single folks have rights, too, and we’ll be asking that all marriages be thrown out, as these unions discriminate against us for being single. Only fair way is everybody is single to the IRS. Sorry, married folks, should’ve have done the right thing. [There are] lots more single folks than homosexuals, and we demand equal rights.

those responsible for such a fiscal blunder. Finances aside, let’s look at we got for that $265 million (and growing): 1. A project that costs $265-plus million for a project that earns no revenue for its financial backers.

2. The world’s largest venue for bums, panhandlers, vagrants, and other neer-to-dos ... Tourists just love it!

3. My favorite: An absolute zero improvement in traffic flow on Virginia Street and its parallel roads! While I cannot blame City Council for this, the blame falls squarely on its equally inept and taxpayer-funded RTC whose traffic light timing and operations are the bane of this county.

Lastly, there is no mention in this article of what has a very good chance of happening because of the trench fiasco. That’s right, Reno may well likely become a member of a very elite club, members include Stockton, Calif., San Bernardino, Calif., and of course Detroit, Mich. You will read about it in chapter 9. ... It will be a sad tale indeed.

Physical education Re “Back to School” (Feature story, July 25): My first three yeas of high school were in Maine—in a school I would characterize as mean and cold, but then my family moved to Rhode Island. I attended East Providence High School my senior year, and I loved it. That school was warm and friendly, and it had a big, big beautiful swimming pool.

Because I was taking gym, I got to go swimming every week—first period, Friday morning. I had perfect attendence, and I made the honor society.

There is not a military solution to every problem.

Nor is there a U.S. answer to every problem. Indeed, sometimes U.S. involvement complicates problems.

Yet time and time again, the U.S. has plunged in around the world to use force as a first resort. Strategies like economic sanctions and regional solutions have been more or less abandoned because the United States is always intruding its military into difficult situations.

In researching this editorial, we noticed something interesting about Nevada’s own U.S. senator, Harry Reid. We were unable to find an instance, during his service in the House or the Senate, in which Reid opposed the use of force by presidents in a dozen different international disputes. As a member of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, he co-sponsored the Multinational Force in Lebanon Resolution in 1983. In 1991 as a senator, he voted for war in Kuwait, when the Senate came within three votes of stopping that war before it started. In April 2007, long after the Iraq war was clearly shown to be a fiasco and after Reid himself turned against it, he still said he would have voted for it. He had too easily accepted the notion that George W. Bush was telling the truth when Bush asked Congress to approve that war. Now he is too easily accepting the notion that Barack Obama is telling the truth—and accepting the idea that only the United States is a remedy for what is happening in Syria.

People born since World War II have lived through innumerable wars in which the United States was involved. Korea, Cuba, Vietnam, Panama, Grenada, Lebanon, Kuwait, Libya, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq,

No. It’s kind of weird. Too out there for me. I heard it’s a lot of drugs and nudity.

Pakistan, on and on. There are only 206 countries in the world, but there are hundreds of U.S. military bases in 150 of those countries.

Last week the nation was marking the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, with its memorable speech by Martin Luther King Jr. It was King who once explained his opposition to the Vietnam War by saying, “I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today, my own government.”

Not many of our citizens would be willing to accept that characterization of our government, given the fact that our schools do a lousy job of teaching us our history. Few of us know of the 40-year horror imposed by the United States on the people of Guatemala, for instance. A bit better known is our displacement of the reform government of Iran and its replacement by the fascist Reza Pahlavi, sentencing the people of that unfortunate nation to a quarter century of torture, tyranny and death.

U.S. Nobel laureate George Wald once said, “The only point of government is to safeguard and foster life.

Our government has become preoccupied with death, with the business of killing and being killed. ... There is an entire semantics ready to deal with [our policies].

It involves such phrases as ‘those are the facts of life.’

No—these are the facts of death.”

The United States government is not the entity the world looks to when it comes to avoiding war. Neither should the people of the United States. Ω

We’re No. 1 in horrible indicators It’s so predictable, it’s hardly news anymore.

Nevadans are so accustomed to being on the bottom of every quality of life index, we’re not even surprised, much less outraged, to hear it again.

We just roll our eyes and move on.

Case in point: Nevada’s “F” grade for its nursing homes, recently ranked by among the nation’s worst. According Sheila Leslie to a report released last month by an independent national organization, Families for Better Care, Nevada had the worst scores of any state in the Pacific region in categories such as direct care staffing, health inspections, and percentage of facilities with severe deficiencies. In fact, every nursing home in our state was cited with one or more deficiencies by state health inspectors. One out of every three nursing homes was cited for a severe deficiency, defined as one where a resident either suffered harm or was in imminent danger.

The report noted that abuse, neglect and mistreatment of nursing home residents in Nevada was widespread in 2012 as fewer than 25 percent of

Nevada’s nursing homes scored above average on their health inspection, the worst record in the nation by a long shot. Problems such as bedsores, dehydration, malnutrition and injuries from falls were common. Many times, health inspectors found residents lying in their own bodily waste, but Nevada levied no monetary penalties at all for these citations.

Lest you think these were not life or death concerns, inspectors found one case where a patient was discharged who still needed skilled nursing care. She returned home where she was later taken by ambulance to the hospital and declared “clinically brain dead.”

Brian Lee, executive director of Families for Better Care, bluntly told the Las Vegas Review-Journal: “Nevada represents what’s terribly wrong with nursing home care and oversight in America. State officials and industry representatives should be ashamed of their abysmal nursing home record.”

increased by 415 percent during the past 10 years. The emphasis on profits for shareholders over quality of care for vulnerable residents is shameful but typical of Nevada’s thinly funded regulatory structure, so starved for resources it’s pre-destined to fail at its core mission of oversight and safety.

It’s no secret that the industry invests heavily in legislative and gubernatorial campaigns, making sure lawmakers are predisposed to arguments that more oversight will lead to more costly staffing ratios and less profit. After all, who else would want to take care of the elderly for the miserly amount of money Nevadans are willing to pay?

Nevada has a long-term care ombudsman, Heather Korbulic, who insisted her agency investigates and resolves complaints. But ombudsman offices in Nevada are notoriously long on official-sounding titles and embarrassingly short on resources to actually perform the oversight tasks.

This dismal report graphically shows that having an ombudsman is

no guarantee that inspections actually happen and significant penalties are assessed when problems are found. One of the key findings in the report makes that point crystal clear: “Despite the state’s lousy track record, Nevada’s ombudsmen verified the second fewest number of registered complaints.”

And as we saw this year, when the Legislature does find “extra” millions to spend, lawmakers are eager to fund jobs in the for-profit sector, prioritizing the film industry, for example, over jobs in state government, like nursing home inspectors, that are of far greater benefit to the public.

Somehow we’ve decided a private industry job is worth spending millions to create while a public sector job is not, despite being desperately needed to protect the health, safety and welfare of our most vulnerable citizens.

It’s our money and our priorities. Let the film industry subsidize its own jobs, and let’s take care of our elders instead. Ω

Reno’s cabs to become more wholesome With the proximity of Lake Tahoe, Burning Man and the downtown casinos, Northern Nevada has a thriving tourism industry that is helped along with the services of its local taxi companies. Anyone paying the slightest attention to these vehicles, however, will notice a peculiarity by Chanelle Bessette when comparing them to other cities’ taxis, except perhaps Las Vegas: Most of the taxis advertise the area’s local brothels and strip clubs. I’ve heard mixed reviews about the impact of these ads.

Many of my college-aged friends don’t care, but friends with young families feel uncomfortable about the presence of these advertisements. Others feel that the ads negatively affect outsiders’ views on Reno as a whole.

On Aug. 25, the Reno GazetteJournal reported on an upcoming campaign by the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) to change the

narrative of Reno taxi advertising.

While there are already major restrictions about what can be advertised by businesses of a sexual nature—for example, brothels aren’t allowed to advertise what specific services they offer nor are they allowed to list price—they have managed to take a sizable chunk of the city’s cab advertising and make it their own. EDAWN’s plan is to push the businesses that promote vice off the cabs by purchasing the ads for businesses that are viewed in more wholesome ways.

Reno has struggled to break away from its national reputation for seediness. From Reno 911 to its image as a lesser Las Vegas, Reno has long gotten a bad rap.

During a recent conversation I had with a stranger in the Bay Area, I discovered that he didn’t even know there was a university in Reno, let alone one with top tier research and the alma mater of Super Bowl 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. It’s true, Reno’s image could probably do with a full-blown makeover.

The issue with the taxi ads, however, is that while it’s good if the change can improve Reno’s image—maybe even indirectly bringing in a larger variety of clientele—the “seedy” businesses ought not be discriminated against.

If the advertising did not work, it would not exist. If Reno’s market is truly changing, then new ads will be successful. The free market and consumer choices determine how well ads do for their purchasers, so if the Reno community decides to respond to and create different kinds of ads, then the new campaign should work.

But local businesses have to analyze and understand the changing tastes of consumers, including tourists. If there is public demand for and response to advertising for small, local businesses, then by all means let the campaign move forward. According to the RGJ, EDAWN is funding the campaign through tax-deductible contributions.

The only foreseeable problem

would be the restriction of advertising for businesses whose values might not align with those of the ad campaign. Infringing on the rights of other business owners who want to entice customers would be an intolerable abuse of the system. As long as their advertising sticks to the parameters of state law, there is no reason why brothels, strip clubs and other businesses that cater to sexual appetites shouldn’t be able to share the advertising space alongside other businesses.

It may even happen that those businesses might eventually phase out their taxi ads in favor of other media. But either way, there should be equal opportunity to generate and conduct business in the area. It’s admirable that the small businesses of Reno are banding together to work on a common mission, but it’s important to not lose sight of the rights of all business owners. Ω

Another customer, who contacted the RN&R by phone, said she has used Rubbermaid containers she purchased at Lowe’s in order to avoid paying the corporation.

The libertarian Cato Institute has issued a report claiming that Nevada ranks 15th among states in the value of all welfare benefits available to family of a single parent with two children. Such a family would be eligible for cumulative benefits worth $31,409 a year, if that parent availed her family of all available benefits. The institute also said that such recipients would earn more than the state’s minimum wage.

But the Reno Gazette-Journal used census figures to show the state has the lowest welfare payment levels in the nation, and critics of the Cato report said no family is likely to use all available benefits, or even to know about all of them.

One mother who previously drew welfare for her family told us payment levels are so low that people are often trapped in dependence, and that she got off welfare only because she received a small inheritance.

Off the city’s radar

Gotta get that CD As part of its back-to-school stuff, the University of Nevada, Reno publicity office issued a release saying that arriving first-term students would “continue the tradition of singing the alma mater and reciting the Nevada Oath during a candlelight ceremony” at Lawlor Events Center.

We never knew there was a UNR alma mater, so we asked for the lyrics. At the same time that they sang this anthem, the students were expected to take the “Nevada Oath.” It’s 178 words long, so we’ll spare you the entire thing. (The U.S. presidential oath, minus the name, is 35 words long.) But here’s a taste of it: “I will honor, challenge and contribute to the scholarly heritage left by those who preceded me and work to leave this university a better place for those to follow, academically, humanely, and globally. I will account for myself responsibly by keeping a flexible and open mind, utilizing critical skills and fairness for problem solving and leadership.”

Issues with trash Two monopolies for the price of one Local residents will not be able to buy their own trash bins under the agreement negotiated by the city of by Reno with Waste Management Inc. Dennis Myers (WMI).

How much that will cost customers is unclear.

When the RN&R ran a cover story on a new trash collection system that is now coming on line, a reader posted a comment after the story that read in part, “[A]fter reading this article I get

The new system negotiated by the city is now being phased in, and everyone is supposed

to be in it by January. The new system is less informal, with more services spelled out and limited, and customers must choose among four levels of service that involve different bin sizes.

WMI’s Reno office apparently does not have any local spokespeople. Calls to that office were returned by WMI publicist Karen Stern in Oakland. She said, “That is not a part of the contract. They have to use the Waste Management bin” by January.

When the large green bins with hinged tops first came to Reno, it prompted a strong consumer reaction against Reno Disposal, then the local system. Protests were organized by a local chapter of Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) against what were called the “Big Green Monsters” (BGM).

It may come as a surprised to residents to know that they have never been required to used BGMs under the current, outgoing system—though the corporation didn’t go out of its way to inform residents of that. Customers can put out neatly tied trash bags once a week if they choose and will still get pick-up service, Stern said.

But that will end in January. After that, customers must use bins and will have only a limited number of bag pick-ups under much more

So it is difficult to know how quickly a customer’s investment would be paid off if she bought a bin instead of using WMI’s. Outlets like Lowe’s and Home Depot sell hinged-top plastic trash bins for prices ranging from about $60 to more than $100.

From the corporation’s point of view, the reason for the use only of WMI bins is “to work with our equipment and make sure that every thing works with our system.”

But what was the reason from the city’s point of view? With the city giving Waste Management a monopoly on trash collection, should it have also given it a monopoly on trash bins?

In fact, the city apparently never raised the issue with WMI. According to city environmental services administrator Jason Geddes, “We did not include that as an option in the current changes.”

Andrew Barbano is a longtime critic of the city’s franchise activities and agreements and editor of NevadaLabor.com, “Waste Management has substantially cut costs, having gone to one-man trucks save for some narrow-alleyed older areas of Reno and Sparks,” he said. “This is the reason for demanding that governments require standard Dumpsters.

It cuts their payroll in half. ... The recycling Dumpster add-on appears to be a surcharge that will never die. Long after the Dumpsters are paid off, WMI will still be charging rent with no accountability or transparency. But they will be paying an ever-increasing kickback to the cities and county unless some public servant steps in to regulate an out-of-control public service.”

He said at state and federal levels, when government grants monopolies, there is usually regulation and ratesetting to accompany it, but Reno has no such mechanism.

“In my experience, municipalities care about one thing above all others where monopolies are concerned: getting the franchise fee, a percentage on their gross revenue,” he said. “This gives governments a perverse incentive: the higher the rates on their constituents, the more money the city or county get, truly a hidden tax. WMI will next go to Sparks and Washoe County for similar rate hikes. Reno iced the cake with 10-year franchise extension through 2029.”

Barbano said cities and Washoe County “should demand a fair and open ratemaking process where the company is only entitled to a fair rate of return on un-depreciated capital investment. Such regulation is the tradeoff for monopoly control.”

Billing inquiry The same reader who told us she used her own Rubbermaid trash bins originally called us about a billing

dispute she had with WMI. She said that for years she has paid her bill at the end of each quarter and now is being billed in advance. The bill is stamped payable “upon receipt.”

If she fails to pay immediately, she receives a notice reading, “Please accept this as a friendly reminder that your account is now overdue. If full payment of the invoice amount is not received on or before the delinquent date you will be charged a monthly late fee of five percent.”

phone, and water are paid after services are rendered, but WMI wants to be paid in advance.

“They want payment for services not rendered,” she said.

Sarah Polito, another WMI publicist, responded, “Waste Management of Nevada has always billed residential and commercial customers in advance.”

There was no response to an inquiry on why advance billings are used. Ω

Waste warriors New curriculum to teach reducing, reusing and recycling

Operation Health Care Bound is a FREE event for middle school and high school students and their parents. Students will have the opportunity to explore many available health care careers and participate in hands-on demonstrations.

Students in Washoe County will now have the opportunity to learn about waste reduction and keeping the community clean via the newly developed Waste Warriors curriculum. by Sage Leehey Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) has done Waste Warriors presentations for years now, taking it over from the “Trash Lady,” Beth sage l@ Isaeff. KTMB would do presentations for various classes, after school newsreview.c om programs and other groups talking mainly about the three R’s—reduce, reuse, recycle. The presentations became too popular though, making it difficult to keep up with the demand, but in 2012, Waste Management gave the organization a grant to put the presentation onto video. KTMB decided to build five lesson plans to go along with it: Waste Warriors, Tracking our Trash, School Litter Survey, Plastic Bag Bans and Trash Travels.

The curriculum will be available to anyone who wants to use it, and there will be training on it next month for teachers as well. KTMB and Washoe County School District have high hopes for the program.

“We hope that it will let kids know that they have the tools that can really affect how the Truckee Meadows and the Truckee River are taken care of,” KTMB communications manager J Merriman said. “That’s what we really would like the kids to know that there are some problems, but there are things that we can do about it, and the things that we can do about it are really pretty easy. It’s just being aware of the problems and taking action.”

When making this curriculum, KTMB wanted to make sure it would be useful to teachers so they worked closely with the school district. What makes it helpful to teachers is that it matches up perfectly with the new standards the school district has adopted.

“With the advent of the common core state standards and the new science standards … what teachers are asking for are resources that are aligned to the For more common core state standards,” said Catherine Schmidt, elementary training information about coordinator for WCSD’s Striving Readers Grant. “We need resources that are Waste Warriors, visit ktmb.org/wastemore problem-based, relevant. In terms of ELA [English Language Arts], we warriors. need materials that are more complex to offer students with reading. ...We’re really happy to have it.”

The new standards require more integration of subjects within the classroom and give teachers the opportunity to bring science back into the younger grades. The curriculum is targeted for third to sixth graders and is presented by Reed High School students on the video.

“When we’re talking about STEM [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] on that piece, it’s really about integration,” STEM Coordinator Kelly Barber said. “How can we integrate what they’re doing in science and what they’re doing in ELA? The things they’re learning about in science are the things they should be reading about in ELA. One of the reasons this project is so great is because it takes the things that the kids need to do for the ELA and the reading portion, and it looks at the things that are important in science and building on their knowledge from year to year.”

Schmidt and Barber think this program will help students because it’s local and relevant to their everyday lives, and they think it will help get them involved with their community. Ω OPINION

that gives strength to dreams of finding treasures. Those who’ve been around awhile can name people who hit paydirt: John Mackay and George Hearst come to mind. So when someone says something valuable has been lost and then rediscovered, a Nevadan’s ears perk up.

But this treasure we’re talking about isn’t gold. This is a find with a somewhat sinister provenance. Its story began up on the Comstock at Gold Hill with a newspaper run by Nevada historian and journalist David Toll, the Gold Hill News, beginning publication in 1974. The main shooter was a guy named Bill Germino, a talented, wellknown and prolific photographer.

He was also a murderer who died in Folsom Prison after having been found guilty of beating Daniel Yuhasz to death with a club in June 1998.

As compensation to Yuhasz’ family, Germino’s assets, including some 12,000 images, were sold at auction.

Years later, David Toll’s son, Sam, heard the images—stored in a black box weighing some 80 pounds—were for sale.

He snapped it up, sight unseen.

While it is difficult to memorialize a killer, these images call for commemoration, not because they remind most of us of Germino, but because they remind us of a Nevada that existed 30 and 40 years ago—a Nevada that many of us have never known.

Nevada Repertory Company If there’s one thing that’s been a constant this year on the local theater scene, it’s change. Seems like everyone, all at once, decided to lower the curtain on the same old thing and spotlight new shows, new playwrights, new venues, new staff members and new ways of doing things.

As we head into fall, perhaps nothing illustrates this point better than this one fact: There’s nary a Christmas chestnut in sight.

It’s a season of upheaval for Nevada Rep, which is getting a $3 million renovation to its performance spaces at the University of Nevada, Reno.

According to Rob Gander, chair of the UNR Department of Theater and Dance, the Redfield Proscenium Theatre will see increased square footage in the scene shop, improved seating, new stage technology and a remodeled lobby/art gallery.

Completion is planned for spring.

Meanwhile, Nevada Rep has no plans to put its fall performance season on hold. Instead, it heads outside. The Living Theatre, a New York theater troupe, will send a cadre of actors to work with UNR students to create an original play, A Day in the Life of the City.

Drawing upon the students’ own environs and daily concerns, the group works together for about 10 days to devise the play, then present pop-up performances at locations to be determined, on and off campus.

In late October, Nevada Rep moves indoors to the Redfield Studio Theatre with Shakespeare’s A Comedy of Errors, a short, farcical tale about two sets of twins separated at birth who create havoc when everyone around town mistakes one twin for another.

Brüka Theatre On the eve of its 21st season, Brüka is also on the precipice of big changes, with construction on the new Virginia Street Bridge expected to begin in 2014.

“I’m pretty concerned about that.

I don’t know what that will mean for us, so I wanted to have a bang-up season,” says producing artistic director Mary Bennett.

It starts with the West Coast premiere of Creature in October.

Set in the 1400s and drawn from the autobiography of Margery Kemp (widely believed the first autobiography in the English language), it’s the funny yet frightening story of a beer maiden tormented by spiritual visions.

In November comes Pieces of Eight, a compilation of one-acts, both existing and original, titles to be announced in October.

Opening the day after Thanksgiving is one of the area’s only holiday-themed theater offerings, Buttcracker V: Pirate Booty.

Brüka’s parody franchise always has a go at The Nutcracker. Replacing last year’s Zombie Apocalypse theme, Pirate Booty sends Clara to the land of pirates.

Brüka’s auditions for shows are set for Sept.17.

As Brüka braces for 14 months of heavy construction, it’s arranging tours and partnerships with area companies, which leads us to Carson City’s Brewery Arts Center.

Brewery Arts Center The above-mentioned Bennett takes the stage in Carson City for a joint BAC/Brüka production of Shirley Valentine, a one-woman show about a bored, middle-aged woman who escapes to Greece It will have two performances during the first weekend of September.

Also this month, resident company Wild Horse Theater Productions offers a month-long theater workshop series for kids ages 4-7, culminating in an Oct. 19 matinee performance of The Princess and the Pea. During this time, Wild Horse will also be in rehearsals for Hairspray, to hit the stage in early December.

BAC’s second company in residence, Proscenium Players, will return to BAC in January.

–2014 WIN SEASON TICKETS FOR THE 2013

Each fall, Tahoe Players pulls together a major musical performance for 9,000 Washoe County school children, capped off with one public performance in early December. This year, Tahoe Players presents Shrek: The Musical, an allages show based on the movie about an ogre who goes on a quest to save a princess. Look for additional fairy tale characters, original songs not heard in the film and backstories for several characters.

Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company Also musical, albeit less playful, is Les Misérables, appearing at the Carson City Community Center in November. It’s the story of Jean Valjean, a man who serves 19 years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread for a starving child, struggles to evade capture by a relentless inspector and ultimately joins the French revolution. A cast of 60 brings the story and songs to life, and the award-winning score will have live orchestral accompaniment.

TMCC Performing Arts Speaking of big, award-winning musicals, TMCC will reprise Rent: The Musical in the first half of November. Though the company produced it in 2009, the show repeatedly sold out and fans have requested its return, says Jon Frederick, company manager, adding that the show will be bigger, flashier, edgier and dancier than before.

Afterward, TMCC leaps into its children’s production, A Year with Frog and Toad, a musical for the family based on the children’s book.

Washoe school performances lead off the run, followed by three public performances in mid-December. The $6-per-ticket price is also nice.

Natural attractions Trails & Vistas Art Hikes September has way of feeling like a brand-new start.

Maybe it’s the start of school, with its No. 2 by pencils and new corduroy pants, that makes Jessica Santina us want to pause, take a deep breath, and reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re headed.

It’s likely this also was on artistic director Nancy Tieken Lopez’s mind as she was organizing the 10th annual Trails & Vistas Art Hikes.

The hike begins at the Pacific Crest Trailhead on Donner Summit, where participants meet trail leaders to begin the

three-mile hike. Leave behind your phone and other gadgets. It’s just you, the woods and art.

“It’s all about the experience of slowing down, experiencing art in nature and breathing,” says Tieken Lopez, Trails & Vistas executive director and founder of the organization and event. “You get to dive deep into your inner being and creativity.

You’re having a good time while you’re connecting to the land, the other people in your group and the artwork.”

Along the guided hike, you’ll happen upon artists—musicians, dancers, visual artists and storytellers—performing on the trail. About 30 artists in all, both new and returning, participate in the two-day event. Some appear on both days and some don’t. Among them are the San Jose State University Symphony Orchestra, the first symphony ever to participate, and Reno Taiko Tsurunokai, a local Japanese drumming group.

Also participating is Truckee’s Emily Tessmer, a Paradise Music recording artist who has recently departed from what she

“I’m going to be sitting in a tree, dressed as a fairy, playing a dulcimer and singing a Gaelic fairy lullaby,” Tessmer explains, a note of excitement in her voice. “Trails & Vistas is a really amazing thing to be a part of. It’s ecologically driven, community- and art-driven. … It’s just a beautiful thing.”

Returning to the lineup, having played for the Art Hikes in 2009 and 2010, is Boston’s Ian Ethan Case, a composer and musician. For this year’s Art Hikes, Case will play the kalimba, an African thumb piano, alongside percussionists Aaron Edgcomb and Chance Utter, who will play an assortment of hand percussion instruments from around the world, all with the

“Reflections” theme in mind.

On Friday, Sept. 6, the eve of the Art Hikes, Case will join a cadre of participating musicians to perform his beloved double-neck guitar for Trails & Vistas’ first-ever World Music Concert.

While artists on the trail only perform one song to each hiking group, the concert, a fundraiser for Trails & Vistas, will offer them the opportunity to play a full set.

“A lot of times, our ‘tribes’ on the trail want to stay and linger to see more of the artists. So we decided to do the concert as a way to showcase our musicians and give them a feeling of coming together,” Tieken Lopez says.

Inner Rhythms will perform a dance piece as well, and painter Susie Alexander will make a piece of art inspired by the music during the concert.

“I’m excited to come back,” says Case.

“It’s a special experience. I’ve never come across an event like it anywhere in the country, and it’s great to see it catch on.” Ω

Big Time Casa Grande 1655 Robb Drive, 746-0123 I have this bad habit of buying Living Social or Groupon type deals. Something just compels me to buy whatever by K.J. Sullivan they are advertising because it seems like such a great bargain.

Who really needs vouchers for 10 undershirts in strange pastel colors or a box of live lobsters? Well, apparently I do. My latest buy was a deal for Casa Grande up on Robb Drive. This time I swore I would actually use the coupon before it expired so I invited my friend Brett to go with me to check the place out.

Casa Grande has an upscale Mexican restaurant style, going on with orange walls, stained concrete floors, ceramic tiles and large Mayan calendars. The back room is surrounded by windows with a beautiful tiled fountain in the middle. This would be a great restaurant to take a date to, not that I have time for dating, what with all the coupons I have to buy.

More honestly, who wants to go on a date with someone who busts out coupons all the time?

A friendly waiter greeted us as amigos and led us to a small booth. We were there at a strange time so the place was nearly empty. Chips, salsa and beans were quickly brought out, along with large menus. We munched away on the chips and spicy beans and salsa while our house Margaritas ($5.95) were brought out. The Margaritas needed more

tequila, but I did appreciate that they weren’t too sweet. The menu has a ton of choices ranging from burritos to menudo. I even saw octopus on the menu.

After much debate, I decided to go with the chimichanga del mar ($15.95). When the plate arrived, it didn’t look very appetizing. A seafood sauce covered the chimichanga that had a strange pinky brown soup-like texture. Undeterred, I dug in and was pleasantly surprised to find the chimichanga stuffed full of shrimp, scallops, crab and mushrooms. The sauce was actually quite tasty, but there was just too much of it on there. Also, I’m not sure the chimichanga was actually ever fried crisp as described on the menu, but it could be that the sauce just took any crispiness away. Regardless, this was a fine tasting meal. I especially enjoyed the shrimp as it had a nice grilled flavor to it.

Brett went with the steak tampiquena ($13.95), which is grilled skirt steak along with a chicken enchilada covered in mole sauce. The skirt steak was surprisingly tender and flavorful.

The mole had a smoky flavor, and the enchilada was packed with chicken. The dish came with a small salad along with tortillas, so Brett got to work making some tiny skirt steak tacos with mole sauce. The tortillas were nice and thick, so I asked the waiter if they were made in house. Nope, turns out they are just the grocery store variety, but he added they do make sure to always get the thick ones.

Well, I guess it’s working since I found them so tasty.

Overall, Casa Grande has decent food even if it’s not entirely authentic. The portions are large, and the restaurant is charming.

Service throughout was attentive and friendly. Any staff member who noticed an empty plate or glass was quick to remedy it.

Using my Living Social coupon was a bonus, but I don’t think I would have a problem coming here without one. Ω

That sadness might make you lose hold of your sobriety.

Imagine landing your dream job and having a celebratory lunch with the boss pouring wine. Could happiness make you lose your sobriety, too? Denise found it wasn’t the event, it was her.

“My parents were alcoholics,” says Denise, “and I was vigilant. I thought it was okay to drink a little in college, yet at some point I was not having fun, and couldn’t stop.” She managed three years of sobriety with the help of the St. Mary’s Hospital outpatient and 12 step programs. “But I had too much pride and a fear that things would not be confidential and anonymous.” Her sponsor told her that her sobriety needed to be more important than work, but Denise left 12 step, and eventually started drinking again.

From the outside, it looked like Denise was a successful professional woman. Few people knew her secret. “I thought that if I was good, strong, and smart enough I could “cure” it on my own. When I couldn’t, I actually convinced myself that the meaning of my life was to be a bad example for others that God wanted me to be an alcoholic to help others.”

Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez make for one sorry movie duo in Getaway, a sure sign that the summer movie season is coming to an end.

Hawke plays Brent, a former racecar driver who comes home to find his Christmas tree in disarray and his wife gone. So Brent does what he’s told and starts driving like a maniac in a tricked-out Mustang rigged with many cameras. After successfully driving through a crowded park

Desperate, Denise went to Holy Cross Abbey in Virginia for a week of silence. “I wrote prayers and put them in the prayer box begging for help.” The experience brought her peace.

But not sobriety. “I just couldn’t stop.” She seriously considered death. “Then, two weeks after the Abbey, God helped me.” Denise called her husband and told him she was going to rehab. She considers herself more spiritual than religious but believes that the week of prayer was her first step.

Denise went to Crossroads in Antigua, a facility started by rock star Eric Clapton. She spent six weeks and has been sober since. “I am bursting with gratitude and joy for life.”

Denise’s advice to addicts: “Know it is a disease and get help. Keep looking for the meeting that has like-minded people.” Denise now has friends from meetings. “They are my friends, not my 12 step friends.”

Denise says that the people with addictions are often accused of being unfeeling. “We are very feeling people - we just don’t know how to feel the feelings. At some point you have to quit trying to figure out why and just figure out the fix.”

without killing anybody—this is a PG-13 movie after all—the horribly annoying Selena Gomez winds up in his car as a tough girl— she wears a baseball cap and a hoodie—who wants her car back. I’m of the opinion that this movie might’ve been better had Hawke been required to drive solo.

Let’s just get something straight: there’s no reason to call this movie Getaway.

Getaway implies that an actual heist or something has occurred and somebody is trying to “get away” in the car. This movie should be called something like Driving Around All Crazy Because Jon Voight is Telling Me To or Driving Toward an Unknown Whatever, A Slave to Jon Voight’s Mouth or simply Absolutely Nothing to do with Getting Away.

I have said it before, and I will say it again: Ethan Hawke always does a good job when he’s required to look and act scared. I just like it when he’s all paranoid and strange

in films like Training Day and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. He is OK in this movie, as he was in The Purge, with both requiring him to be freaked out. Sadly, these two films also hold the dubious distinction of being two of the year’s worst films.

As for Gomez, she’s also in two of the year’s worst films due to her presence in this one and the execrable Spring Breakers.

Unlike Hawke, she does not do a decent job of playing freaked out.

Gomez’s dialogue in this film consists of repeated usage of words like “Look out!”

“I hate you!” “We’re going to die!” and “I like bacon and gummi bears!” Actually, she never says that last one, but if she had, that would’ve been refreshing and different.

Even though the Voight character has required Hawke to keep the Gomez character in the car, she does get many legitimate opportunities to leave. She always comes back, and when Hawke asks her why, her reply is something along the lines of “Because I want to.” That’s deep, man, real deep.

This is essentially 90 minutes of a car driving real fast with some rather upset people inside, with people dodging the car like a big budget version of that videogame Crazy Taxi, and Voight’s gross, unshaven face.

I’m starting to miss Vin Diesel acting all serious and mopey in the Fast and Furious films.

The new Riddick movie will come out next week, so I guess I’ll get my fix.

On paper, I suppose a 90-minute car chase had some appeal. People love cars, and people love car chases even more, so let’s just do that for the entire film. Director Courtney Solomon has a way of making a car chase tedious after about three minutes.

Ninety minutes feels like your least favorite semester from your college years—you know, the one where you got the flu during midterms—multiplied five times.

The film is left open-ended for a sequel, a sequel where we would be likely to see the return of all parties. All parties need to get any notion of a sequel out of their minds.

They need to go play golf or read some poetry or something. As far as starring in any other films called Getaway that have nothing to do with actually getting away, I’m thinking the world will be OK if the car stops here. Ω

Lee Daniels’ The Butler

Director Lee Daniels, prominently mentioned in the film’s title after a much publicized lawsuit, delivers a fine emotional wallop with this historical epic very loosely based on the life of Eugene Allen, a butler at the White House for 34 years.

Those going to this film for its true historical significance take note: the film contains much fiction. Allen is renamed Cecil (played

by Forest Whitaker), and is given a fictional son in order to depict a family conflict regarding the Civil Rights movement. So, this film, which shows the butler interacting with presidents from Eisenhower (Robin Williams) thru Ronald Reagan (Alan Rickman), is mostly made up. That doesn’t hurt the film’s dramatic significance. It’s an ultimately moving experience. What does damage the film a bit is horrible makeup, especially a goofy fake nose for John Cusack as Richard Nixon. The makeup is sometimes so bad, that the film turns into unintentional comedy when some characters are on screen. Whitaker holds the whole thing together, and Oprah Winfrey, in her first starring role since her excellent turn in Beloved, does strong work as Cecil’s wife. Other stars playing presidents include a relatively makeup-free James Marsden as John F. Kennedy, and an absolutely covered Liev Schreiber as Lyndon B. Johnson.

Prince Avalanche

David Gordon Green, after an extended foray into comedy with Pineapple Express, Your Highness, The Sitter and Eastbound & Down, returns to his indie dramatic roots (George Washington, All the Real Girls). Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch star as two highway workers painting stripes on a road after fire has ravaged the surroundings. Rudd is typically great Rudd here, with a nice chance to show his dramatic chops and plenty of opportunities to be funny. One can’t help but think of Into the Wild as Hirsch takes a character far away from civilization again. Both actors play well off each other, while Green gets a chance to still be funny while also creating something a little more on the “real” side. Wonderfully shot, and featuring a terrific soundtrack from Explosions in the Sky and David Wingo, this is one of the year’s more pleasant surprises, and a nice comeback for Green after the failure of Your Highness and the so-so nature of The Sitter. Woodley, so good in The Descendants, is proving to be one of cinema’s great young actresses. This film is a unique and intelligent take on growing up. This is directed by James Ponsoldt, who piloted last year’s terrific Smashed, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who appears here as Sutter’s sister.

Ponsoldt is officially a force to be reckoned with, having made two of the best films of the last two years. Others in the cast include Jennifer Jason Leigh as Sutter’s mom, and Kyle Chandler as his idiot dad. And while he only has a couple of scenes, Bob Odenkirk is terrific as Sutter’s tolerant employer. To read a plot synopsis of this film is to make it seem ordinary. It’s far from ordinary. It’s spectacular.

We’re the Millers

Jason Sudeikis plays a small-time drug dealer who gets in over his head and is forced to smuggle drugs from Mexico by his boss (Ed Helms). Realizing that border agents seem to go easy on families, he hires a fake family to make the trip in an RV. The family includes a wife (a stripper played by Jennifer Aniston), a daughter (a homeless girl played by Emma Roberts) and a son (a hapless neighbor played by Will Poulter). The film has a Vacation movie vibe, especially because Sudeikis is charming in a way that Chevy Chase was for a brief time in his career. Aniston plays a mighty good stripper for sure; she has another calling in case the whole acting thing doesn’t work out. Roberts gets perhaps her best role yet as Casey, delivering some great eye-rolling moments.

As for Poulter, he steals scenes nearly every time he speaks, and his encounter with a tarantula is priceless. Sure, the movie gets a little gooey and sentimental by the time it plays out, but we’ve come to like the characters by then so it’s OK. It’s not a grand cinematic effort by any means, but it does provide some good laughs, with a fair share of them being quite shocking.

The World’s End

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost star as part of an old gang of friends getting back together to finish a pub crawl they failed to complete 20 years earlier in their hometown.

Pegg plays King, the group leader and now slightly disturbed man-child, while Frost plays Andy, the group pessimist who’s still recovering from a partying incident years before. They start drinking pints, only to discover that blue-blooded robots have overrun their old town, so in addition to completing the crawl they must save the world. This is the third film from Pegg and director Edgar Wright after Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, and it is a worthy conclusion to their “Cornetto” trilogy (named for a brand of ice cream that appears in all three films). It delivers a lot of laughs, great action, and even serves a significant emotional punch. One of the summer movie season’s great surprises.

You’re Next

This one is a little bit better than The Purge, the summer’s other home invasion horror film … but only a little. A rich family goes out to their vacation home in the countryside where they gather for a feast, only to have unseen visitors start picking them off with a crossbow. Those unseen visitors eventually show themselves as dudes wearing various animal masks, and they are a little on the creepy side. But, overall, this feels like standard, worn-out territory made sporadically tolerable by director Adam Wingard’s ability to tender the occasional unique scare. A seasoned mystery/horror watcher will see the big twists coming a mile away. Still, Sharni Vinson is pretty kick-ass as the girlfriend with a surprising ability to survive. The movie is a showcase for her talents in the end. As 2013 horror films go, this one isn’t nearly as fun as The Conjuring, but is markedly better than the snore fest that was The Purge. Apparently, it sat on the shelf for a long time. It wouldn’t have been a big deal if it had just stayed there or gone straight to video.

There was a time in film history when Woody Allen was consistently making the best movies in the business. His latest, one of many movies he has made in the last 10 years, is that return to form that some of us former Allen fans have been waiting for, thanks in large part to a phenomenal central performance by the sure-to-be-Oscarnominated Cate Blanchett. Blanchett plays Jasmine, the wife of a Bernie Madoff-type financier (Alec Baldwin) who must relocate from New York to San Francisco after she is bankrupted and emotionally destroyed.

She gulps martinis, criticizes her helpful sister (Sally Hawkins), and, quite frighteningly, is prone to bouts of talking to herself.

Allen finds the dark humor in the story, and employs a supporting cast that includes comedians Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K. and, most astonishingly, Andrew Dice Clay, who, doggone it, delivers one amazing performance as Ginger’s financially destroyed ex-husband, Augie. Above and beyond the humor, Allen makes his film a parable about how some deeds are irredeemable, and some folks are simply doomed. It’s as bittersweet as any movie you will see this, or any, year for that matter. As far as the Allen film canon goes, it’s a top five installment. It’s one of those films where everything pulls together perfectly, with Blanchett at its powerful center.

Organ minder Tristan Selzler The smoke from the Rim Fire briefly lifted to make way for a warm, breezy Sunday evening—a stroke of luck by Fil Corbitt for the Aces’ last home game of the season—and rays of sunlight cut above the western edge of the stadium to cast a shadow to the base of the pitcher’s mound.

Baseball is a sport steeped in tradition and among the most recognizable of the sport’s customs is its accompanying music. Nothing says “ballpark” more than an organ ... well, maybe overpriced beer.

As I walked into the press box, I admittedly was expecting an analog organ tucked into some corner, but when I considered the stadium’s relative newness, I quickly realized how ridiculous my notion was.

Instead, Selzler—a professional musician in Reno—led me to a counter holding a Midi keyboard plugged into a Macbook Pro. He was running the signal through the editing software Logic, then out into an external interface.

It was a high-tech take on the old tradition.

Warming up the crowd before the first pitch, Selzler’s hands darted around the keyboard popping up with “When the Saints Go Marching In,” taking second with “Friday” by Rebecca Black, rounding out the medley with a few verses of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana, and finally sliding right into home with Europe’s “The Final Countdown.”

some Dr. Dre as a foul ball ricocheted into the crowd behind third base.

It’s really cool, but why go to such effort? The person running sound could easily play any prerecorded organ song he wanted with the simple press of a button.

“It’s cool because what I’m playing up here is a human reaction to the game,” said Selzler. “It’s human experience ... human connection.”

I suppose it doesn’t matter if the keyboard is running through computer software as long as a person is playing it—even if not explicit, it’s a commentary on the game.

But he has to be careful about how forward his commentary is, said Selzler.

“There was an organist [for a Cubs’ minor league team] who got ejected for playing ‘Three Blind Mice’ when the ump made a bad call,” he said.

Selzler’s references are much more subtle, and a lot of his material is original.

He’s been playing for the Aces for only one season, usually only on Sundays, but his sophistication makes it seem as though he’s played every game for years. Every time a foul ball was tipped into the crowd, a base stolen, or every time the sound guy shouted “Tristan!” across the press box, he chimed in immediately with a short melody or string of chords— each a quick comment on the game.

His comfort in the press box might have to do with his general comfort in front of a keyboard. Selzler plays in a staggering number of groups (at least six or seven in town, including the Tristan Selzler Jazz Quintet, Jelly Bread, the St. Christopher Project, and Blues Assault). He says, though, the press box has a completely different dynamic from playing in a band.

“There are about a dozen people in there doing shit, and as the organist, I have to coordinate with these folks to make sure I’m not playing at the wrong time—over the announcer, the sound effects guy, etc.,” Selzler said.

“It’s stressful but fun.”

That dynamic might change entirely next season. Management is talking about moving the organ out of the press box and down on the floor to display it a little more.

“You know, I’ll get heckled, dodge foul balls … but hey, anything that brings more attention to the fact that this is all live … that’s a good thing.” Ω ART OF THE STATE

BLAST FROM THE PAST Jane’s Addiction and Adam Ant Many well-known bands or entertainers tend to skip Reno when they’re on national tours, opting to play a few dates in the Bay Area.

Every once in a while, a rock icon or rising star books a date in the Biggest Little City. Even rarer is the week when several touring acts hit the area at once and, if you’re cash-strapped, you have to make hard decisions about which show you really want to see. This is one of those weeks. Grand Sierra Resort, 2500 E. Second St., will present a few shows this week that, until fairly recently, you would’ve had to drive to San Francisco or Sacramento to see. Alternative rock band Jane’s Addiction is actually making its second appearance in Reno in about a year. The band’s “legend” status is no fluke. Their 1988 album, Nothing’s Shocking, is considered by many music critics to be one of alternative rock’s most influential albums. Band leader Perry Farrell is also the founder of the first alternative music festival tour Lollapalooza. The group has been through several breakups and reformations over the years but the trio of Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins has remained constant through each incarnation. The band and musical guests Strat and Mouse and Walking Papers hit the Grand Theatre stage at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9. Tickets are $49. Call 789-2000 or visit www.grandsierraresort.com.

The following day, ’80s pop star Adam Ant (pictured) brings his comeback tour to Reno. The New Wave icon broke out of the 1970s British punk, post-punk and New Romantic scenes with his band Adam and the Ants. The group energized the pop culture landscape with their flamboyant, swashbuckler look and infectious sound combining tribal chanting, Burundi-style drumming and Duane Eddy-like guitar sound.

Adam and the Ants had several hits in the United Kingdom during the early 1980s, including “Antmusic,” “Dog Eat Dog,” “Stand and Deliver” and “Prince Charming.” Adam Ant (born Stuart Leslie Goddard) struck out on his own in 1982 and had hits in the United States and the U.K. with the songs “Goody Two Shoes” and “Strip,” along with accompanying music videos that were on heavy rotation on MTV. Adam laid low during most of the 1990s, save for a hit single “Wonderful” and a few acting cameos. His struggles with bipolar disorder and a scrap with the law got him some unwanted attention in the early ’00s, but the charismatic singer seems to be putting that behind him with his first album in 18 years, Adam Ant is the Blueback Hussar Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter. Adam Ant and opening act Prima Donna perform on the Grand Theatre stage at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Tickets are $27.50.

Frida Kahlo: Her Photos This collection of personal memorabilia, hidden from view for more than 50 years, documents Kahlo’s life and reveals a different side to the Mexican artist best known for her autobiographical paintings. Great Reno Balloon Race About 100 hot air balloons of various shapes and colors will fill the morning sky this weekend when the annual race lifts off on Friday, Sept. 6. This year’s event includes a new Super Glow Show at 5:15 a.m. on Friday morning, followed by the mass ascension launch at 6:45 a.m. and competitions that tests pilots’ skills. The weekend’s highlights include the pre-dawn Glow Patrol event at 5 a.m., followed by Dawn Patrol at 5:30 a.m., and mass ascension at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7-8. Admission is free, but plan on arriving very early in the morning to find nearby parking, or else you can take a bus that will drop you off near the park. BIG IMPACT Local business man Dave Henselman and his wife

Marily have experienced first-hand the positive impact of mentoring a child facing adversity. Dave was matched with his “Little Brother,” Anthony for more than six years. Through their time together, Anthony became more confident, took a greater interest in school, and improved his grades. “Mentoring Anthony was such an incredible experience. The impact of the relationship between Anthony and myself has left an indelible mark on me. It’s hard to imagine a more rewarding experience.”

Wanting to create a bigger impact in the mentoring program, Dave and Marily funded the Henselman Scholarship in 2008 to provide “Little Brothers” and “Little Sisters” graduating from high school with assistance to attend college or technical training schools.

This past June, Dave and Marily helped celebrate high school graduation for 13 “Little Brothers” and “Little Sisters”. Four of the graduates, Katia, Sarah, Brandon, and Brian were awarded Henselman Scholarships in late August and are now entering their first year of college. All four of the students are the first in their family to not only graduate high school, but the first to attend college!

“As adults, I think we take milestones like high school graduation for granted,” said Dave, “Meeting these young people and recognizing their accomplishments is a real honor for Marily and me.”

“As a freshman in high school I had no idea what AP classes were or what the SAT was,” said Katia. “My Big Sister Dawn explained the importance of challenging myself with tough courses and to be prepped for exams. She pushed me to believe in myself. She inspired me to not only do better, but believe in dreams I would not have thought possible. My parents didn’t graduate high school, but because of my experience with my Big Sister, I believe I will graduate college.”

Katia will be attending DePaul University in Chicago. She plans on majoring in economics with a minor in English or Spanish and hopes to practice law as a human rights and constitutional lawyer.

Til dead end do us part I’ve been separated from my husband for two years.

(Our divorce isn’t yet final.) A terrific man sought me out when he was breaking up with his girlfriend, but then he got back together with her and said we could only be friends. We still get together at times, and he told me, “I’m just not ready to give up my girlfriend, although I may feel different when your divorce is final.” I’ve tried moving on, but whenever I get to a good place, he calls and is interested again! I normally wouldn’t allow this behavior, but I enjoy his company so much!

The fact that a man calls for you to come running isn’t necessarily reason to do it, unless you’re a golden retriever and he’s got a dirty tennis ball to throw you.

Assuming you live in North America and not a culture where marriage is a big tent filled with lots of wives, a man’s involvement with another woman should immediately disqualify him from consideration.

Accepting continued contact with a downgrade to “only friends” works if you can shift the man into the friends-only slot, but it seems you can’t, and it seems that’s just how this man likes it. You’re now his ego’s girlfriend and his backup entertainment when his girlfriend’s getting her nails done.

OK, so technically you’re not yet available, but that’s just a matter of paperwork; you aren’t romantically attached to another person. What’s keeping you stuck on this man is a psychological fishhook called “intermittent reinforcement.” When rewards for our behavior (like affection or attention we’re shown) come regularly and predictably, we relax and take them for granted. But the stuff that sods the ground for an obsession is random, unpredictable reinforcement—a guy you can’t have who occasionally surprises you by throwing you a bone of hope: telling you that he isn’t ready to give up his girlfriend but “may feel different when your divorce is final.” Sure, and the moon may grow a mustache and start orbiting your dentist’s office.

So, no, you aren’t stuck on him because it’s so darn enjoyable being with him. It’s because he’s turned you into a lab rat frantically pushing a bar for a hit of rat chow that only sometimes comes. The way to kick the habit is to recognize this, detach, and have the self-discipline to stay detached. Send him a message

that it’s over and not to contact you again, and then do everything in your power to keep that from happening: Mail your phone to a stranger in China, and hole up in an out-of-the-way motel. Of course, you could just change your number and not answer your door, but going to at least a little more effort might help reinforce that you have a new policy: No matter how handsome, amusing and compelling a man seems, you will chase him only if he also happens to be sprinting away with your purse.

Everything happens for a raisin I am 18 and took a baking course at a cooking school, where I met this dreamy 19-year-old guy. We both constantly found lame excuses to be around each other, so I was fairly positive our attraction went both ways. I get that men need to show their interest by asking you out, so I flirted and flirted and waited and waited for him to ask me out, but he never did. Now the course is over, and I’m wondering what I did wrong and whether I missed out on the love of my life!

Perhaps he was hoping he could get a girlfriend the way a dog gets food scraps: just wait for a woman to fall on the kitchen floor and then carry her off in his teeth. He may now be hitting himself upside the head with a wire whisk for showing all the mojo of garnish.

This also may have been a situational crush—one that he couldn’t follow through on outside the test kitchen due to his having a girlfriend or even a boyfriend. Or maybe he’s just being 19. At 24, with a little more experience, he might do more than make like a kid staring into the bakery window. Sadly, all that matters now is what he didn’t do. But you did the right thing by not making up for a guy’s inability to squeak out a request for a date. Keep on flirting, and stop fretting that you may have “missed out on the love of (your) life!” Sure, you may have—if you’ve always dreamed of a day when you’d spot a white horse galloping toward you in the distance and, as it drew closer, see that there’s no prince, only a bag of frozen vegetables duct-taped to the saddle.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Mystical poet

St. John of the Cross (1542-1591) was one of Spain’s greatest writers. But not all of his work came easily. When he was 35, a rival religious group imprisoned him for his mildly heretical ideas. He spent the next nine months in a 10-foot-by-6-foot jail cell, where he was starved, beaten and tortured. It was there that he composed his most renowned

poem, “The Spiritual Canticle.” Does that provide you with any inspiration, Libra?

I’ll make a wild guess and speculate that maybe you’re in a tough situation yourself right now. It’s not even 1 percent as tough as St. John’s, though. If he could squeeze some brilliance out of his predicament, you can, too.

can naturalist John Burroughs (1837-1921) traveled widely and wrote 23 books. “I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think,” he testified, “all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see.” Let’s make that longing for abundance serve as your rallying cry during the next two weeks, Scorpio. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, you have a cosmic mandate to push to the limits—and sometimes beyond—as you satisfy your quest to be, see and do everything you love to be, see and do.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

Punk icon Henry Rollins did an interview with Marilyn Manson, rock ’n’ roll’s master of the grotesque. It’s on YouTube. The comments section beneath the video are rife with spite and bile directed toward Manson, driving one fan to defend her hero. “I love Marilyn Manson so much that I could puke rainbows,” she said. I think you will need to tap into that kind of love in the coming days, Sagittarius: fierce, intense and devotional, and yet also playful, funny and exhilarating. You don’t necessarily have to puke rainbows, however. Maybe you could merely spit them.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): If you

want to know a secret, I talk less crazy to you Capricorns than I do to the other signs.

I tone down my wild-eyed, goddess-drunk shape-shifting a bit. I rarely exhort you to don an animal costume and dance with the fairy folk in the woods, and I think the last time I suggested that you fall in love with an alien, angel or deity was ... never. So, what’s my problem? Don’t you feel taboo urges and illicit impulses now and then? AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18):

Germany’s Museum Ostwall displayed a conceptual installation by the artist Martin Kippenberger. Valued at $1.1 million, it was called “When it Starts Dripping From the Ceiling.” Part of it was composed of a rubber tub that was painted to appear as if it had once held dirty rainwater. One night while the museum was closed, a new janitor came in to tidy up the premises. While performing her tasks, she scrubbed the rubber tub until it was “clean,” thereby damaging the art. Let this be a cautionary tale, Aquarius.

It’s important for you to appreciate and learn from the messy stuff in your life—even admire its artistry—and not just assume it all needs to be scoured and disinfected.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In her novel

White Oleander, Janet Fitch suggests that beauty is something to be used, “like a hammer or a key.” That’s your assignment, Pisces. Find practical ways to make your beauty work for you. For example, invoke it to help you win friends and influence people.

Put it into action to drum up new opportunities and hunt down provocative invitations.

And don’t tell me you possess insufficient beauty to accomplish these things. I guarantee you that you have more than enough.

Disc driver Russ Lopez During the first week or two of the semester, students and faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College might have noticed fliers recruiting athletes to play a sport called “Diamond Discus.” Russ Lopez, a local cabbie and photographer, created the game. What is this game?

It’s a game that I created. It’s a Frisbee game played on a baseball field. I’ve worked it out. I have a couple of friends who helped me with it, but I have not played the game.

I’m trying to look for people who are interested. I’m trying to get the best people possible. I posted [fliers about] my interest in getting some people involved up at UNR and also at TMCC. I haven’t got a response yet.

The game, like I said, is played on a baseball field utilizing a Frisbee. I’ve been throwing Frisbees since I was 10 years old.

There’s Ultimate. There’s Frisbee golf. Why do we need another Frisbee game?

I’ve thrown Frisbees at parks. I’ve thrown them on the street. But I feel a baseball field is perfect. The dimensions are great for throwing a Frisbee. … It’s a noncontact sport, and I felt there are a lot of contact

Tell me the rules.

The rules are basically really simple: catch and throw. It’s similar to baseball. There’s a pitcher, and he throws it toward what I call a flinger, who is like the batter in baseball.

The flinger throws it out into the field of play.

If it’s caught, the person’s out. If it’s not, the person goes to one base only, unless it’s a home run play. I don’t want to go into that, but basically that’s all it is, catch and throw.

I feel it could be modified for more experienced players and players who are not as experienced.

Consumer test of Burning Man Well, OK. I sucked it up, loaded up the trailer, and went out to Black Rock City to investigate all the rumors that the cops were running amok, that the event had become just too damned big, that there weren’t any naked people any more because Burning Man has been overwhelmed by fascistic fashion codes, and that the entire scene had just been basically corrupted, perverted, compromised and sold out.

My conclusion? The Night of the Burn is still the best goddamn party on planet Earth. Period. And the ticket price, when you stop and think about it, is actually a bargain.

I can’t think of another event where you get quite as much “bang for the buck.” as BMan. If you want to spend 8 nights out there in BRC, which you easily can, then your $400 ticket is all of 50 bucks a night. Redonkulous. Now let’s assume that you’re a semi-sane human being, and you can get your Burn ignited, flamed, and properly snuffed in five nights.

That’s still a smooth $80 a night.

As I roamed the playa at 3 a.m.

Sunday morning, scraping up the shards of my skull that had been blown up by some totally evil and depraved DJ on a giant dragon, it struck me that this whole Electronic Dance Music scene, which is now the hottest musical genre on the planet, owes a lot to B Man. A helluva lot. Because it was back in the ’90s, when the rave scene broke out (remember the rave scene, with huge parties in burned out warehouses and secret forest hideouts?) that many DJs who later became fixtures and even stars discovered that the greatest rave of them all was happening in Northern Nevada. They would show up out there and work it night after night, trying things out, seeing what worked and what didn’t, cracking the playa with some ultra bass in yo’ face in this wildest of places. I’m from California. I moved to Sparks 13 years ago. I have a background in photography and graphics, and that’s why I moved here. Currently, I’m working as a taxi cab driver. The reason for that is that even before I moved here I had a back injury. That’s one of the reasons I’ve had a hard time finding people to play this game, because of my back injury. I can still play, but not as good as when I was a little bit younger. I still do photography and a little bit of graphics. … Another thing is that there are baseball fields all over Reno-Sparks, and a lot of them that I see are empty. They’re not being used except for certain times. So, why not? There are kids out there who can’t play baseball, who can’t play soccer or football. Frisbee is just another game. Ultimate, what I know about it, is played on a soccer field or a football field, and you need a lot more players. The way I have this worked out, you don’t need as many players. Ω

And now, 10 to 15 years later, many of these guys/gals are bona fide stars and the hottest tickets out there, doing concerts for six figures a night and packing clubs, discos, and even stadiums on five continents. Tiesto and Bassnectar are just two of the many, many Djs who came, saw, and conquered BRC, yet another example of the trailblazing influence that blows out of this amazing burg every year.

And to think that, back in ’95, the Rave Camps were a mile from The Man (literally a mile; we would drive to those parties, believe it or not) because those crazy ass DJs were playin’ that shit too damn LOUD. Ω

Burning Man brought 68,000 people this year to celebrate cultural diversity and the arts in the Black Rock Desert National Conservation Area.

National Public Lands Day gives the Reno community the opportunity to give back to the land where Burning Man happens!

This annual tradition began nationally in 1994 with three sites and 700 volunteers. In 2012, over 175,000 volunteers worked at 2,206 sites in every state. Today, 16 of those sites are in Nevada.

Friends of Black Rock High Rock celebrates the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort with four great partners and two events in the Black Rock Desert National Conservation Area.

sePt 27-29: bitNeR RaNCh histoRiC RestoRatioN PRojeCt The historic Bitner Ranch is north of Stevens Camp with a rich cultural history. It’s the perfect place for archaeology and emigrant trail buffs! This will be the first year of a long term project to restore historical structures, so bring your tools!

Native peoples were living next to emigrant homesteaders making this a magnificent cultural site. The Surprise Valley BLM office is leading this event with Friends of Black Rock High Rock. It’s an ideal end of the year camp trip. Volunteers will be given a free pass to all federal recreation sites that charge an entrance fee.
