Frack-free Nevada

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Sorry to say it, but summer is officially over for me. Hunter’s back in school. I’ve written my syllabus for my class. I’ve signed up for and purchased half my books for the classes I’m going to take. I’ve got one last barbecue planned, but since it’s on the day before classes start, I’m going to have to behave myself.

Darn it. While I had a great summer, that realization makes me a little sad. I still have so many things to do that I used to do every summer, but somehow I didn’t have time for this summer. I didn’t camp once. My gardening was maintanence.

I had no vegetable garden. I might not even get a winter garden in unless I re-skin my hoophouse.

Still, I have one more yard project, and one more home improvement project I want to get accomplished before the fall equinox. You’re probably don’t want to hear about how I’m going to put in a bit of decomposed granite in the front, to replace some grass I cut out, but you might be interested in my solar project.

The idea is to lease a solar vehicle. I’m not going to go into details, but suffice it say, I want to figure out how to power it without paying NV Energy.

That means I’m going to have to put PV modules on my house. Peculiarly (but not really), NV Energy dictates how many modules you can put on your house. I think it’s roughly equivalent to the amount of electricity a person used in the previous 12 months. I’m fine with that (well, not exactly), it just means I’m going to have to do it in two phases.

I’m looking into financing, and so far, I’ve found that Nevada State Bank, Umpqua Bank and Admiral’s Bank have specialized lower interest loans for “green” projects. I expect it’s going to take months to figure all this out, and I expect I’ll be writing more about it, but if anyone has any particular expertise or advice, feel free to drop me a line.

Re “Heating up” (Green, July 4): Hydraulic fracking is an urgent issue. Nevada needs a moratorium in order to allow science time to study the potential risks of hydraulic fracturing before issues surface. If Nevada fails to allow time for research, the side-effect costs associated with fracking to our health, air, water, and food supply could far exceed any projected revenue. We already face water shortage issues. Let’s make sure that the water we do have available remains safe for consumption. Nevada also faces issues of nuclear disturbances as we violently shake and frack our crust. Fracking poses health and safety issues that must be addressed before any fracking is permitted in Nevada.

Dear Johns With the arrest of 11 women for prostitution during Hot August Nights, our local KOLO TV News showed mug shots of a few of the women. But where are the photos of the men who solicit these women? This absence of mug shots and arrests of the “John” is a regular occurrence in Reno.

Prostitution is a consumer-based crime.

Without the demand, there would be no crime. The men and a few women who pimp these girls, using coercion and fear to get them on the street and keeping their money should be the number one priority. But I have only seen one announcement in the past year on the news, and it was because it was his wife and the mother of his toddler. Is this some modern version of the Scarlet Letter, where the woman is humiliated publicly, but not the man?

is now planned; through one of the most serene areas in Reno, will only destroy the way of life for residents and wildlife alike; as well as the environment, which RTC doesn’t seem concerned about. Where will all the water go when we get the next flood?

In the past, much of the water filled the Rosewood Lakes Golf Course, where the SEC will be built. It boggles my mind that approximately 15 years ago that SEC was a dead deal and now it’s a done deal. How did that happen?

Since parts of McCarran have been improved, the flow of traffic is much better in those areas. Therefore, I ask, why even build the SEC? I think Reno needs more open spaces than new roads. RTC should improve upon existing roads before building new roads!

Litigious lawyers I was in Reno for Hot August Nights and visited a highly recommended restaurant, The Squeeze In, which I would also recommend, and picked up a copy of your paper.

There was a letter by Al Engleman from Fallon with whom I would totally agree: Lawyers shouldn’t be members of any legislature, at all. They are trained to debate and argue, but they rarely reach a resolution. If you think I am wrong, just look at the mess we have in Washington. Every time something goes a little askew, they have a subcommittee for this or that, but you normally don’t hear about a solution, just a lot of talk. And I think as a whole, they are a contentious bunch.

As the old saying goes, the only thing they can agree upon is to disagree.

I am deeply disturbed in the failure of 911 to send officers not once, but twice when my wife and kids were hit by a DUI driver. I for one cares that the system that was supposed to protect them failed and put them at risk. I have either received a generic or no response from officials. was only able to identify as a white four door sedan, made wide a right turn. My wife moved as far right as she could, but the vehicle sideswiped our vehicle’s driver side and sped off.

My wife immediately called 911 and stated that she was just in a hit and run accident. The only question that the 911 operator asked was, “Are you injured?” And when my wife stated, “I don’t think so,” the 911 operator told her to file a report online. My wife was never asked if the vehicle was disabled, was she safe or did she need other assistance. When my wife asked about pictures and the evidence on scene at the accident and she was told that that “was a matter for the insurance company.” A mother alone with her 7 and 8 year old children at 11 p.m. at night in an unsafe situation called 911 expecting help and was told no officers would respond.

Now my family has been traumatized, my vehicle is damaged with no recourse and the suspects are still at large in my neighborhood. … This is not only incomprehensible, this is completely unacceptable.

Another embarrassment Nevada journalism came in for some unwanted attention recently.

KLAS News in Las Vegas ran a back-to-school report on immunizations that contained language like this: “Vaccines have been debated for years in the medical field. While some doctors believe they are vital to a child’s health, other doctors believe in a more natural approach to disease prevention.”

This is like saying that alchemy or the roundness of the Earth is still being debated. There is no medical debate on vaccinations, nor was KLAS able to come up with any physicians on the anti-vaccine side, except a chiropractor.

Unless the reporter included distinguished medical figures like Jenny McCarthy and Robert Kennedy Jr., there is no debate to cover here. Huge amounts of money have been expended by medical researchers re-studying the claims of professional nuisances like Jim Carrey whose big names command publicity but whose knowledge falls short of any intellectually honest standard.

Our colleagues at City Life in Las Vegas moved quickly to try to stop the damage from this report, which could encourage parents not to immunize their children.

They posted a piece reading in part, “In a video piece stunning for its complete lack of scientific accuracy and objectivity, the local CBS affiliate rolled up the last century of medical progress and hitched its wagon to the thoroughly discredited anti-vaxxer campaigns Wednesday morning.” The Columbia Journalism Review at Columbia University joined in: “In an unfortunate and disheartening display of false balance and failed reporting [KLAS] ignored reams of science OPINION

that support the efficacy and safety of immunization in protecting children from serious, often lethal diseases.”

This is not a case of giving both sides a fair hearing. It’s a case of false equivalence. Pitting a serious physician against a fringe figure or a “holistic healer” is irresponsible and unprofessional. Little wonder reporter Diane Tuazon declined to be interviewed, also unprofessional. And when KLAS deleted a reader comment from a pediatrician, it was equally unprofessional—but did reveal that the station prefers an uninformed chiropractor to an informed pediatrician. That deletion then brought the controversy to a wider audience, with a Forbes columnist writing that KLAS is more “driven by ratings rather than service to the community they serve.”

Those who oppose vaccinations have been exposed time and again as peddling dangerous folklore, not science. Giving them a say in this is like doing a report that gives both the pros and cons of bank robbery or cancer. A big name does not an expert make. In area after area, we have seen this failing in modern journalism. “Experts” are trotted out to challenge climate scientists on climate change, for example, but the critics nearly always turn out to be not other climate scientists but purveyors of junk science—television weathercasters, politicians, or one of a half dozen scientists-for-rent who are actually physicists and thus without expertise in the field (many of whom previously challenged the science on secondhand smoke for the tobacco companies).

It is journalism’s job to scrutinize claims, not promote them. And KLAS should try to undo some of the damage it did with a clear admission of error and some reports that correct the original piece. Ω |

The head of ‘D’ class It’s easy to be cynical about Nevada politics.

The State Integrity Investigation, a project of the Center for Public Integrity, uses a data-driven analysis to rank each state’s laws and practices designed to deter corruption while promoting accountability and openness in government. by Nevada, unsurprisingly, ranks Sheila Leslie 42nd among the states, with an overall grade of D-minus. The project grades 14 categories including lobbying disclosure (Nevada received an F), ethics enforcement agencies (another F), redistricting (a D), public access to information (another D) and political financing (D-minus).

The goals of the project are to show what’s working and what’s not, engage the public in learning more about how these factors influence their state’s politics, and ultimately apply pressure to lawmakers to change their ways and the system that supports them.

It’s an uphill battle to be sure.

Just this year, Secretary of State Ross Miller sponsored a comprehensive bill to increase transparency in campaign

financing, lobbying disclosure, and ethics (see our failing grades above). It not only went nowhere but was nearly transformed into a bill that would have made the situation even worse!

Senate Bill 49 sought to improve campaign reporting through on-line reporting of contributions and expenses greater than $1,000 within 72 hours of receipt. The Senate Legislative Operations and Elections Committee laughably “improved” the bill by raising the threshold of reporting to $2,000 and required the 72-hour reporting period only during early voting. Defying the very definition of transparency, the committee then amended the bill so these contributions would only have to be reported after being deposited in the bank, allowing a candidate to legally hide the contributions until after the election.

Miller wanted to clarify how contributions could be spent, specifically outlawing spending on concerts and clothes (except for campaign attire), but the senators added the so-called Armani provision to allow for the purchase of suits in case an

elected official had no clothing suitable for work.

Miller wanted to require reporting of cash on hand from one election to another, so the public, donors, and potential competitors could easily understand how much cash an elected person had in their campaign account.

That was another non-starter.

SB 49 tried to carefully define the word “gift” to give guidance to legislators and gift-givers about reporting requirements since few gifts are ever publicly reported despite lots of known gift-giving activity.

Legislators found that provision unacceptable as well.

Despite editorials from nearly every newspaper in the state encouraging the Legislature to restore the original provisions along with a modicum of public confidence in the system, the bill kept getting worse, finally dying an ignoble death in a conference committee at the end of the session.

Sen. Barbara Cegavske, R-Las Vegas, bluntly explained the failure in a committee hearing: “Not one constituent has ever asked me about

this issue. The only people who want it are the people in the audience, the reporters, and your opponents.”

Another bill, SB 203, would have required lobbyists to report their expenditures on individual legislators year-round instead of the current practice requiring the reports only during the four-month legislative session. The bill passed the Senate unanimously, as it did in 2011, but died in the Assembly, repeating the fate of the 2011 bill.

After all, who would want to be tied to expenses from the Nevada Mining Association’s annual September bash at Lake Tahoe?

Legislators might have to skip their golf games at expensive Lake Tahoe courses, avoid the booze cruises, and forgo the spa treatments or be willing to see this information show up on campaign mailers and TV ads.

Voters should make these issues part of the open and competitive Secretary of State race next year and every legislative contest as well.

If we don’t care, they won’t either. Ω

Don’t burn the Burners with taxes trailers around town, but the boost in local profits provides more than enough compensation. With nearly 60,000 visitors, there’s a lot of dough to be spent in the Biggest Little City. On top of the economic encouragement, a strong sense of community arises in the beautification of our town.

There have been talks in recent years about legislation regarding a Burning Man “live entertainment” tax, much like those instituted for casino shows. There has been a certain level of indignation about the potential tax. According to reporting done earlier this year by the Las Vegas Sun, Raymond Allen, Burning Man’s government relations manager, said the tax “doesn’t seem to apply to us. We fall into a different category. It’s a city.” He estimated the event pays about $4.5 million in fees each year to local, state and federal government entities.

A live entertainment tax isn’t the way to handle the wild success of a festival like Burning Man, seeing

We’re only a few days away from one of the most highly anticipated event weeks in all of Nevada: the week of Burning Man. Tens of thousands will flock to the Black Rock desert to party on the playa amid towering art installations, by Chanelle Bessette activities and commodities, which will be accessed through the makeshift city’s gift economy.

As anyone living in Northern Nevada can attest, the Burning Man festival draws many economic benefits to the business owners and culture of the area. From pre-festival Burners staying at local hotels, to dining in Reno restaurants, to buying playa gear at Walmarts and small local businesses, Burning Man tourism surges vital economic life into our local markets at the end of the summer.

The influx of Burning Man enthusiasts might mean an inordinate increase in the number of dreadlocks, neon tutus and dusty

as the burden of the tax would fall onto Burners. As it stands, individuals already have to pay exorbitant costs to attend. With tickets at $380 for eight days, the festival is comparable to many other popular events like Coachella and Electric Daisy Carnival, although still very expensive. But in addition to the ticket, the costs of travel, lodging and supplies can reach additional hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Also, Burners are not allowed to sell goods within the Black Rock City limits and must instead adhere to the gift economy, even though the event coordinators require U.S. currency to buy certain products on site, like ice or coffee.

For the photographers and writers who frequent the event, there is also very limited creative license that Burners must deal with. For example, tickets say that all photos taken by professional photographers become property of the Burning Man entity, and any photos sold must give a percentage of the sale back to the people who run the

festival. Overall, Burners are highly limited on what they can make money from, but the spirit of social freedom and detachment from corporate capitalism is emphasized.

Meanwhile, everyone is trying to make money off of the event. And while that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, we have to remember that prices can only be driven up so high before demand drops, and the cash cow of Burning Man dies. As with most festivals, there’s a dual nature to Burning Man. On one hand, Burners want to have a pure—if not quasihedonistic—experience in the safety of a common community without the frills of corporate intervention.

On the other hand, Burning Man is bigger than ever, and if there’s a way for it to be taxed and monetized into oblivion, then people are going to try to do so. For the benefit of the Northern Nevada economy, steady prices and low taxation at Burning Man must be maintained to keep people coming back. Ω

Heller’s drug message In a Senate floor speech, Sen. Dean Heller expressed his disdain for “Hollywood celebrities” being recruited to promote the new health care law, denouncing them as akin to the actors and athletes who once endangered the public by promoting tobacco products.

“Today, Hollywood and some athletes are being used to peddle the Affordable Care Act, perhaps to make up for past sins,” Heller said in a Senate speech.

Performers like Jon Bon Jovi, Michael Cera, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Amy Poehler and Oprah Winfrey have been approached by the Obama administration for help in promoting the U.S. health care program.

An approach was also made to Major League Baseball and the National Football League, but they ran for cover after threats from Republican leaders.

Eighteen Washoe County Republicans switched their voter registration to the Independent American Party last week, according to an IAP news release, though other reports put the number at 19. The news release said that “most of them” were members of the governing body of the Washoe Republican Party but did not specify exactly how many.

During the 2012 presidential campaign, the state Republican organization—taken over by the Ron Paul forces—was supplanted by an organization called Team Nevada formed to support Mitt Romney and other regular Republicans. The Washoe Republican Party subsequently informed the Federal Election Commission it had broken with the state party and would operate independently.

The Nevada Independent American Party is the entity that is known nationally as the American Independent Party, formed in 1968 as a vehicle for George Wallace’s candidacy for president.

Washoe County, generally a Republican county in the last half century or so, is nearly tied in the most recent voter registration figures from the Nevada secretary of state’s office. As of last month, there were 95,332 Republicans and 95,245 Democrats in the county. The IAP has 12,660. Barack Obama carried Washoe County over Mitt Romney 51 to 47 percent.

Bob Thomas 1926-2013 Bob Thomas, a former state legislator and Carson City School Board member, has died at age 87.

Thomas, a Republican, served three terms in the Nevada Assembly, 1982-1988. During his service, he advocated a service tax in Nevada. With the state shifting from a goods-based to a service-based economy, Nevada’s sales tax on goods was dwindling as a revenue producer. Had Thomas succeeded in extending the sales tax to services, it would have made several Nevada budget crises less severe and the tax system fairer, but Democrats— who otherwise sympathized with the service tax idea—were reluctant to let it pass under Republican sponsorship.

After Thomas left the legislature, he moved further right and began writing a column In Carson City’s Nevada Appeal that frequently drew complaints.

In a self-penned obituary published after his death by the Appeal, Thomas wrote, “Life owes me nothing and I owe it nothing—zero regrets, a clean slate.”

“And I was stunned by the buses. … Buses. Ten Buses. A hundred buses, two—there must have been a thousand. Every street is nothing but buses. I didn’t know there were that many buses in the world, let alone that many in Washington. That’s what I remember.”

A March for Jobs & Freedom will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Federal Building at Liberty and Virginia streets, 10 a.m.-noon.

Those buses, from all parts of the nation, transported tens of thousands of people. Estimates of the Washington, D.C., crowd on Aug. 28, 1963, were all over the map, but 200,000 was heard frequently.

The March on Washington is today cloaked in such a fog of hallowed respect that it is often forgotten that trouble was widely expected.

Reporters asked African-American leaders about the possibility. Editorial and politicians tut-tutted at black

leaders on the need for AfricanAmerican leaders to ride herd on the crowds.

Protest then did not have the kind of legitimacy it has today, nor were demonstrations as routine as they are now. That change was accomplished by the Civil Rights and subsequent antiwar movements. So it is not surprising that in 1963 hospitals in the D.C. area were prepared for an influx of injuries, that jails were ready and thousands of troops were waiting outside the city for a call to go in.

President John Kennedy and Attorney General Robert Kennedy had opposed the march, and one of the president’s own campaign organizers was posted behind the large sculpture of a seated Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial with a switch, ready to cut off power to the public address system. The president declined to speak at the gathering and avoided a pre-march meeting with black leaders. A scheduled post-march meeting could always be canceled if things went badly.

But in the end, there was not a single arrest, or three arrests, or four that day, depending on who’s telling it.

But there was no arrest of demonstrators. The late Nevada NAACP leader Bertha Woodard later said, “There was a great crowd, and it was very orderly.”

The march was originally scheduled by African-American labor leader A. Phillip Randolph for July 1, 1941.

Kennedy, didn’t like the idea one bit, but Randolph refused to cancel it until after Roosevelt signed an executive order throwing thousands of defense jobs open to previously barred blacks and creating a Fair Employment Practices Committee to enforce it.

When the march was finally held in 1963, it was about the same thing—jobs, a fact little remembered today. Its official name was the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Also lost in the mists of time is the militance of the day. The largest number of signs were those that contained a demand—“Jobs for all,” “Voting rights,” “An end to bias,” “An end to police brutality”—followed by the word “Now!” at the bottom of each sign.

It’s important to remember that the purpose of the march was to educate and pressure white people, so the fact that so many of them attended in person was heartening to blacks.

As Woodard WOODARD pointed out, marchers were promoting Kennedy legislation “to establish a Fair Employment Practices Commission, to permit the intervention of the Justice Department in civil rights matters, to provide for fair housing, and so forth.

The march was partly to show support for these bills.” Woodard said Time magazine reported after the march that those provisions could not pass, but Kennedy’s murder helped fuel their passage in 1964. (Woodard returned to D.C. in 1983 for a 20th anniversary march.) Two other Reno black leaders who attended the 1963 march, Eddie Scott and Erma Fritchen, visited Rosa Parks on their way to D.C. They were not available for interviews.

Randolph, in deference to his historic role in conceiving of the march, spoke first in 1963, and set the tone for firmness: “Those who deplore our militance, who exalt patience in the name of a false peace are in fact supporting segregation and exploitation.”

John Lewis, now a member of the U.S. House, was then a young and fiery leader whose prepared text included the lines, “We will march through the south, through the heart of Dixie, the way Sherman did. We shall pursue our own scorched earth policy and burn Jim Crow to the ground nonviolently.” It took pressure from the

president himself to pry those words out, but Lewis’s speech was still plenty strong: “We do not want our freedom gradually, but we want to be free now! We are tired. We are tired of being beaten by policemen. We are tired of seeing our people locked up in jail over and over again. And then you holler, ‘Be patient.’ How long can we be patient?” (The original version of the speech can be read at www. crmvet.org/info/mowjl.htm) Susan and Eugene Paslov, now of Carson City, were in Peace Corps training for tours in Turkey. Corps officials had warned trainees to stay away from the march.

“There were a number of us in Peace Corps training, and we walked in a kind of a phalanx for a while,” Susan said this week, describing their participation. “I think we may have had a banner. We were there fairly early, and we got up in the front fairly near the Lincoln Memorial in a kind of grove of trees that some labor groups had staked out. It was on the National Mall, and you couldn’t see anything but the reflecting pool because everything else was covered with people.”

The Paslovs remember Peter, Paul and Mary and Bob Dylan performing.

It was this occasion, as much as anything, that made “Blowin’ in the Wind” a civil rights anthem second only to “We Shall Overcome.” There was a lot of inspiring music that day.

Mahalia Jackson sang the spiritual “I’ve Been ’buked and I’ve Been Scorned” at Martin Luther King’s request.

Gene Paslov said the crowd was not loud or boisterous. Rather, it was almost quiet—the sound from the crowd at most times was “kind of a low murmur” unless someone speaking or performing was applauded or cheered. “During King’s speech you could have heard a pin drop,” he said.

That speech did much in later years to drain the militance from the public’s perception of the march.

The incessant replaying of the “dream” portion of the speech later sanitized for white ears both the speech itself and the march. Other parts of King’s speech were not at all middle-of-the-road: “This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now OPINION

is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children.

“It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering summer of the Negro’s legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality.

Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. And those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.”

He also spoke of the “marvelous new militancy” among AfricanAmericans (a term that was not yet in common use).

The “now is the time” litany received more attention than the dream portion that year. The “blow off steam” comment led that day’s Associated Press account of the march. When NBC News put out a record album on the year’s events (A Time to Keep 1963), it was this section, not the “dream” segment, that was used.

Whether the famous march left a bequest for the future is not at all certain.

Twenty-one years after the jobs march, a study by the Center for the Study of Social Policy reported that while African-Americans had made political gains in the previous quarter century, they made no economic gains at all.

Last year a Stanford University study reported that “hundreds of large and medium-sized school districts in the South have steadily resegregated, slowly moving away from the ideal of black and white children attending school together.”

King himself is reported to have said, after the Selma march and the Watts riots, “They have turned my dream into a nightmare.” Ω

The current issue with the river here is that it was straightened and has very little life in or around it. When you look at it, you look down from a very high bank created by the increased speed of the current because of the straight path. Any greenery basically ends at the bank as well.

“Over the past 100 years, the river has been altered dramatically ... so what we’re doing is restoring the processes, the flooding, to benefit the Truckee Meadows in two ways,” said Conservancy restoration specialist Chris Sega. “One, it allows the flood control project in Reno to do flood control mitigation in Reno by allowing that flood water to come to the lower river and to flood on these properties down here. And that has an additionally benefit in that these riparian ecosystems require flooding ... and that creates habitats for fish, birds, and then recreation opportunities for people.”

But if you go to the McCarran Ranch project, just a short drive up the 80 West, you can see a river that looks quite different than the one at the Tracy plant.

“That was done by rechannelizing the river to return the curves to the river that were taken out when it was straightened in the ‘60s,” Swinehart said. “We’ve come in and pulled back the banks and raised the river bed by adding rock, and what that did is raised the water table and allowed for all the natural regeneration of willow, cottonwoods, that kind of thing.

And a good rule of thumb when you’re looking around here is anything that doesn’t look like an old cottonwood was probably planted in the last 10 years.”

The Mustang Ranch project is an example of a kind of middle ground between the not-yet-started Tracy project and the several-years-postcompletion McCarran Ranch project. You can see the bends and some backwater wetlands created. The vegetation is still a little sparse with some patches of green throughout signaling that they were planted, making it more obvious that the site has been worked on. Ω

My practical efforts to learn whether I had any unknown genetic health risks began in earnest when Jolie had those magnificent, world-famous breasts surgically removed. Since she’s one of the most famous actresses in the world and has been called “the most beautiful woman in the world” many times over, you probably know the story: Jolie, a mother of six, had a double mastectomy to prevent developing breast cancer. She also plans to have her ovaries removed in order to prevent developing the same kind of cancer that killed her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, in 2007, at the age of 56.

Jolie’s aunt, Bertrand’s sister, Debbie Martin, died of breast cancer just a few weeks after Jolie’s surgery.

While I find her decision nothing short of heroic, it also made a certain amount of rational sense. By some measures, the actress had an 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer and a 50 percent chance of ovarian cancer because of genetic variations, the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, that ran in her family. Her mother and aunt had the same mutation. (Health officials quickly noted that these risk probabilities do not apply to most of the population.)

I crapped out on the genetic dice roll as well. My mom died young of a brain aneurysm, after having lived a wholly laudable life, never having smoked a cigarette, gotten drunk or even said the ‘F’ word. My dad, on the other hand, smoked for years, drank more than was good for him, had heart attacks, strokes and diabetes. He’s 80 now. His brother, Leonard, a Catholic priest, died at 47 of a massive heart attack. I guess I don’t need to say my lifestyle choices have more aligned with my dad’s than my mom’s, and at 51, I’ve already had to face issues of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

I’d like to say this is proof of the old adage “only the good die young,” and somehow I’ve been inoculated against early death, but I’ve known far more hedonists who died without wrinkles than I have saints.

But the threat of an aneurysm, heart attack or diabetes didn’t hold a candle to my greatest health fear: Alzheimer’s.

I’ve said many times that my right not to have my family suffer through my death by Alzheimer’s is a fundamental human right, and I’d blow my brains out long before I put them through that. How’s that for a happy thought: Lingering death by Alzheimer’s or the family ordeal of a suicide?

But Angelina Jolie was not my introduction to this concept of testing for genetic medical issues. She was just the catalyst. Tanja Poley, human resources manager for this company, had put the seed in my mind months earlier. She’s the adoptive mother of two Chinese children. A late onset Type 1 diabetic, she was very concerned about the lack of information regarding her children’s family medical history.

She had the analysis performed on herself through an outfit called 23andme, but after having the analysis, decided against having her children tested.

23andwe This individual genetic analysis is a fairly new science called personal genomics. Since I’m a cheapskate, I went with 23andme to do my analysis, mainly because it was the cheapest and biggest at the time, due to a multimillion dollar grant from Google, which brought the price down to $99. But there are other companies that do genetic analysis (see sidebar), although they generally cost at least as much, and focus on different kinds of information.

It’s a simple process. Just go to www.23andme.com and order a kit. The kit took 10 days to arrive at my house. It’s basically a box with a tube in it, instructions and a mail-back envelope. After not eating, smoking or using alcohol for a half-hour or so, you spit about a half-teaspoon of saliva into

general population will develop breast cancer sometime during their lives compared with about 60 percent of women (600 out of 1,000) who have inherited a harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2. In other words, a woman who has inherited a harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 is about five times more likely to develop breast cancer than a woman who does not have such a mutation.

“Lifetime risk estimates for ovarian cancer among women in the general population indicate that 1.4 percent (14 out of 1,000) will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer compared with 15 to 40 percent of women (150–400 out of 1,000) who have a harmful BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation.”

So personal genomics is all about odds. What you do with those odds is as individual and as stressful as deciding whether to hit on a 16.

According to the 23andme website, the company tests for more than 240 health conditions and gives test results for 40-plus inherited conditions. So, let me pose you some questions: What if my results had come back that I had an elevated risk for Alzheimer’s? What if I had say, a 51.3 out of 100 chance of getting Alzheimer’s between the ages of 50 and 79?

What is the only preventative measure available to me? Or better yet, what if something I had never even considered, for example, atrial fibrillation, showed an increased risk? And what if stress is a cause of atrial fibrillation?

Do I sign up for my pacemaker now?

While I was waiting for them, I answered medical history questions on the website until I got bored. I presume those results were measured against others to look for relationships among symptoms and genes to possibly discover new genetic markers, and it must work because 23andme claims certain discoveries.

Personal genomics has come a long way in a short time, baby. But the real problem behind these inexpensive types of tests is that the science hasn’t come far enough. For example, companies like 23andme only analyze about a million genes out of the 3 billion on a human genome (that’s the complete set of DNA, which is made of two twisting, paired strands). But every individual who participates adds to the database, increasing 14 | RN&R |

the accuracy of the information provided back.

It should also be mentioned that a single gene variant barely nudges someone’s overall risk, so the results are less actionable than they are just interesting. It’s an incredibly complex interplay between the individual variants and how they interact with each other and the things our lifestyles add to the mix.

In other words, with the part they do analyze, most of it isn’t as black and white as that of the BRCA 1 and 2 markers for breast cancer. I say “black and white” knowing that the presence of those markers are no guarantee of developing the disease. Or not developing the disease, for that matter. But this is the sort of information the Tomb Raider actress based her decisions on.

The National Cancer Institute says, “According to estimates of lifetime risk, about 12.0 percent of women (120 out of 1,000) in the

“My sister and my mom were really intrigued by this idea,” she said. “So for Christmas that year, I bought them the test kit. As a side note, my sister has done the DNA on her dog, so she knows exactly all the breeds that he is (see sidebar). So, we’re just kind of a family that’s intrigued by the science of this and who we are and where we come from. So when my sister got her results back, it showed she was 100 percent European, but when I got mine back, it showed that I was only 99 percent European, and so we just kind of wondered how two sisters could have that different heritage. … My 1 percent shows that it comes from Nigeria or Japan.”

But as I said, Poley had a deeper interest than just curiosity. She’s the adoptive mother of two children. Noah is 10, and Grace is 12, and they’re originally from Taiwan, Republic of China.

“I had my DNA done because my children are adopted,” she said. “In a conversation once with other adoptive moms, it came up about getting their DNA to see if there were any health concerns we should be aware of since we didn’t have any family medical history on them. I was kind of intrigued, but I wanted to do it to myself first to see if I really wanted to take this step to get the DNA on my children.”

With her 1 percent possibly Asian genome, she wonders if there isn’t a metaphysical connection from her genetic make-up to her adopted Asian children, but is a bit hesitant to discuss it because, well, that’s not the sort of thing human resource managers generally talk about in newspapers. But her perception into genetic analysis goes a bit deeper. She developed Type 1 diabetes when she was in her 20s, a genetic marker that’s mentioned in the 23andme data.

“So the results that I got, I shared with my mom, and I said, ‘So if you had known this about me when I was 10 years old, would it have changed anything in the course of raising me?

And she said, ‘No, it wouldn’t.’ That was one of the most insightful parts of the whole thing.

We know I have Type 1 diabetes. It doesn’t run in my family. But my DNA showed that I do have a higher risk of acquiring diabetes than the average person. But the DNA showed that I have a 7 percent higher chance of getting it than the average person. And I got it. But I have like a 30 percent chance of getting restless leg syndrome, and that hasn’t shown up yet.”

So while the results of the analysis may be 100 percent accurate, they are far from precise, and the data raises more questions than it provides answers.

“That is part of the reason I decided not to do it for my children, because it wouldn’t change anything in raising them,” Poley said. “What it did bring up was this whole ‘who are we?’ It was too heavy for a 10-year-old. I completely support them doing it when they’re adults, but I think it’s something that adults have to do.

“All it really shows is who you could be, but it doesn’t really tell you who you are going to be. Or who you are. And that’s why I decided not to do it for my kids.”

Me and 23andme In the end, I’m mostly with Tanja: The information I gained from 23andme has changed little about my behavior. Every one of these pieces of information goes back to the cliche pieces of advice that moms and doctors have been giving since they invented moms. Don’t smoke, maintain a healthy weight, exercise, eat natural foods, get plenty of sleep, and keep your brain active.

I’d add, learn how to healthfully manage stress and cut people with forked tongues out of your life, but that’s just me. It’s probably in my DNA. So, let’s take a look at my personal results from 23andme. There are essentially two parts to the results: Health overview and ancestry overview. Dig a little deeper into the innumerable links on the site, and you’ll be better informed about health issues, and probably begin to notice signs of insomnia.

Health overview is broken down to five subcategories: 1) Health risks: your risks for common and complex diseases; 2) Drug response: your body’s response to drugs and medications; 3) Inherited conditions: health conditions passed down through families; 4) Traits: your genetic likelihood of having various traits; 5) Health tools: experimental health features using your DNA. Ancestry overview is likewise broken down to five subcategories: 1) Ancestry composition: the percentage of your DNA that comes from populations worldwide; 2) Maternal line: Your ancestry from your mother and through her mother and beyond; 3) Paternal line: your ancestry from your father and through his father and beyond; 4) Neanderthal ancestry: Your genome wide percentage of Neanderthal ancestry; and 5) Ancestry tools: experimental ancestry features using your DNA. The only part I really care about is health risks. That subcategory is broken down into three subcategories, and I apologize for the long list, but aren’t these the reasons you got this far into the story?

Nor will I go as far as Angelina and have surgery because I have a 33.9 percent chance of suffering from atrial fibrillation. But I will bear all this information in mind when I notice funny, inexplicable symptoms.

And while I find it interesting that 23andme says that 2.9 percent of my DNA came from Neanderthals, some of my friends would say that while 2.9 percent is high for the general population, it’s probably low for yours truly.

And they’d almost certainly point to the fact that Angelina Jolie’s breasts did more to get me to consider my own lifestyle choices than all the dire warnings of modern doctors. Ω

rom the sky, Burning Man at night is an oasis aglow in the middle of a dark desert. Thousands of lights attached to clothes, bikes, furry boots and hula hoops light up the playa for the week-long festival. While Black Rock City has long been hailed as a place to reconvene with nature, technology has a special place and purpose, bringing together hackers and makers who see the event as the perfect opportunity to experiment with innovative and sustainable gadgetry.

And if Burning Man is known for anything, it’s experimentation.

Burners have long found creative uses for technology and electronics, incorporating it into themed camps and art installations. This freedom has attracted a fair share of geeks, such as Larry Page—Google’s CEO—who wants a Burning Man-type event specific to technology.

“I like going to Burning Man,” he said in an interview with gadget blog TechCrunch earlier this year. “An environment where people can try new things. I think as technologists we should have some safe places where we can try out new things and figure out the effect on society. What’s the effect on people, without having to deploy it to the whole world?”

And Burning Man has responded similarly, hosting a series of “maker” workshops earlier this year on making solar stoves, musical instruments and art from recycled materials. And it’s also seen technology as a learning opportunity, and a way to bring together science and art for kids.

The Youth Education Spaceship (Y.E.S)—an exploratory creative installation that helps children learn about art and science— started at this year’s Maker Faire and will eventually settle at Burning

Man, where kids will be encouraged to study and play on the playa.

But until Silicon Valley can find its own place to prototype and develop with the same freedom, there’s always the Black Rock Desert.

h i p p i e m ag i c Most Burning Man technology falls into one of four categories—clothing, transportation, art and food. There’s often plenty of overlap. Making functional pieces takes months of preparation.

Tara Davis, co-founder of Firefly Lighting and “high duchess” of PolyEsther’s Costume Boutique, makes electronic wearables throughout the year, but her skills are especially in high demand during Burning Man season.

Davis and her boyfriend, Patrick Tebbutt, started experimenting with electronic playa wear by making hula hoops. They then learned how to make clothes with features like blinking lights. Much of what they create is programming-intensive.

“It usually starts with thinking, ‘This would be cool lit up,’” Davis says.

Davis is an experienced seamstress and clothing designer, and incorporates controlled light-emitting diodes (LEDs) into items such as corsets, furry vests and scoodies (hoods with an attached scarf). She uses Arduino, an open source microcontroller popular among hackers and makers, to program the wearables.

Arduinos and Netduinos come in different sizes and forms, and can be used in conjunction with other microcontrollers to make some complex ecosystems within an outfit.

Most of what Davis, Tebbutt and their friend, Kurt Dukatz, create focuses on light, including a 6,000 LED screen that pulses with music. They plan to feature the screen at their camp. Davis also plans to make more responsive clothing using Bluetooth integration, allowing for input—like a voice command or physical movement—to have a function.

She envisions clothes reacting to certain phrases—like a scoodie with lights that turn yellow if the wearer speaks the term “Porta Potti.”

S lo w b u r n While much of the making happens pre-Burn, some are hoping to make Burning Man into a hackathon experience.

Eric Jennings, co-founder of Pinoccio—a wireless microcontroller manufactured in Reno—plans to hack at his camp with the device he helped design.

“There will definitely be Pinoccios on the playa,” he says. The Pinoccio, also open source, can be used for automating or activity tracking. Jennings sees a lot of potential to use Pinoccio. While it can be used with Arduino, it also functions independently.

Others are trying to find ways to better use the landscape’s natural resources—particularly, sunlight and wind.

“I think it’s really important that sustainability is a priority for technology,” says Callie Scott, who will be attending Burning Man this year for the second time. She plans to use a stove for solar cooking, and also

built a solar charger for her camera.

“Because Burning Man is so much about not leaving a trace, it’s a good opportunity to think of how we rely on technology and how that’s impacting the planet. There are some pretty cool projects at Burning Man that use renewable energy, so this could be a place to try out how these energies could be used in communities on a larger scale.”

Most people use a generator to power their camp or installation, but some are trying to replace gasoline with biofuel. Davis hopes that more people will start using rechargeable batteries instead of disposables. The Burning Man website also offers suggestions for lighting, emphasizing options like halogens, which are bright and efficient. Scott notes that the best part of incorporating technology into a camp is the opportunity for collaboration.

“If you set a goal with your friends, there’s really no reason not to fulfill it,” she says. “You just have to get creative. We wanted to be more sustainable this year, so we challenge ourselves to think outside of the box for how we could make that happen. We’d love for that to be done in the tech industry.”

Scott, who says that she doesn’t necessarily consider herself a “maker”—“I’m still learning the basics about technology”—thinks there’s no better place to learn.

“While the camps at Burning Man have a pretty good setup of items, there’s always something you forget at home. Like, what happens if you forget a soldering iron? It’s a great place to push the limits.

And who knows? We might end up creating something out there that will change the world.” Ω

Davis says that making wearables is more approachable than ever, with technology companies like Adafruit and SparkFun offering widgets and components that can be sewed right into garments, adding features like temperature sensors or audio control. But there’s still a learning curve, especially for using conductive ink or wire.

“We really try to make everything super-user friendly,” she says. Power supplies are built right into the clothing, and many of the garments are washable. “I’m excited that more people are getting into wearables, especially as part of the maker movement. But some people are turned off by how technical it is. I try to explain the process, but sometimes, when people ask me how certain things are made, I sometimes just say, ‘hippie magic.’”

World view Global Lens A consistent complaint, heard around office water coolers, at the bars, and on social media by in recent months, is that it’s been a shitty Brad Bynum year in Hollywood. Big movie after big move has disappointed. Even those of bradb@ news review.c om us who grew up on comic books and Saturday morning cartoons are sick of superheroes and giant robots. All the good writers have moved to premium cable. The cinemas play the same kinds of movies: the aforementioned cartoonish action flicks, along with cheap-laugh comedies and deathFor more information, by-numbers gore fests. But what about poor people? People in Beijing? Tehran? Cairo? Where are their cinematic stories?

The Great Basin Film Society is a nonprofit group that presents critically acclaimed classic, foreign and independent films to Northern Nevada audiences, often presenting films that wouldn’t be seen in the

area otherwise. The GBFS merged a few years ago with Artemisia Moviehouse, and the combined organization uses both names.

With a grant from Nevada Humanities, the organization is presenting the Global Lens film series, an annual series of 10 films curated by the Global Film Initative and featuring films made by curators from all around the world. The film series will be presented in two weekly screenings.

Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. at the Good Luck Macbeth Theater and Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. at the Nevada Museum of Art. The series includes films from Egypt, Mexico and Chile, among other places.

“Part of why I thought it would be worthwhile and important to join this collaborative effort of Artemisia and Great Basin Film Society and Good Luck Macbeth is that there are not enough opportunities for people to have exposure to independent and particularly foreign films,” says Colin Robertson, the NMA’s curator of education. “This is a series of films that offers people the opportunity to see a variety of perspectives by artists and

directors from around the world, whose voices are not well represented in an average American cinema complex.”

“The storylines that you come across are often very unique, and often inspiring and touching in very human ways,” says Robin Dechent, the president of GBFS. “They come from so many different angles.

They’re very different than the Hollywood experience that tends to be very standard, and you know what to expect every time.

Whereas in independent and foreign films, you get a glimpse of the world through so many different perspectives.”

The series started on Aug. 13 with a film called About 111 Girls.

“The film was excellent,” says Dechent.

“It was beautifully done. It takes place in Iran. It was sort of a tragic story, but with some comic relief, amazing character development, beautiful scenery.”

The next film, Beijing Flickers, will be screened at the Nevada Museum of Art on Aug. 25.

“It’s basically a coming-of-age story for a young, Chinese out-of-work professional, a guy left in the eddy of China’s rapid growth,” says Robertson. “He lost his job and is coming to terms with the difficulties of modern life in China.”

Dechent says that one unusual feature of this film series is that the local organizers themselves are watching the films for the first time alongside the audiences.

“Normally we do prescreen the films before we show them, and in this particular case we agreed to show the series before we even knew what the films were going to be, purely on the reputation of the Global Film Initiative,” she says. “We put it in their hands, knowing that they choose films with the intention of connecting communities to different cultures around the world.”

She says that this provides an exciting dimension to the screenings for the organizers.

“It gives us a real opportunity to have real-time conversations with our audience about how we feel about the movie and how they feel about the movie.” Ω

I’m such a bad influence on children that they needed three people to shield that baby from me.

I was the first to arrive, so I went up to the bar, got a drink and asked if we could sit outside.

The inside area is simple, clean and bright, but outside is where it’s at. Megan, the very friendly bartender and waitress, was happy to accommodate anything I needed, so she sent me outside while I waited for my drink. The patio is small, but has a great view of the course, ponds and the mountains.

Umbrellas are set up to keep you shaded, and there’s even an outdoor bar with grills set up against the back wall.

I took the corner table with the best view and waited with my mimosa ($6) while the others trickled in. Megan came out, took our drink orders and brought us some menus. The menu offers typical breakfast items including omelets, eggs Benedict, huevos rancheros and breakfast sandwiches. SunSett

even offers a P90X breakfast with a bunch of healthy stuff like egg whites, spinach and cottage cheese.

Mike, who is sporting more of a beer keg than beer belly, stated of course he would normally order that, but this was his “cheat day.”

Especially since they had a $3 special going on.

I decided to go with the breakfast burrito ($7.95), which came with options of bacon, chorizo, sausage or ham and potatoes. I had to go with chorizo. I was pleased that the chorizo was not too greasy and didn’t soak through the tortilla.

The plate came with a side of crispy tortilla chips and pico de gallo. Jared went with the biscuits and gravy ($7.95). Generally, I don’t like biscuits and gravy, because I’m so picky about gravy, but wow, SunSett Grille knows what they are doing. The gravy is rich and filled with meaty hunks.

The biscuits could have been flakier, but who cares when you have all that gravy.

Nicole and Mike went with the eggs Benedict ($10.95). The eggs were so perfectly poached and the slice of ham was humongous.

Tracey went with the pancakes, ($5.95) which included two platesized, light and airy pancakes.

Cindy had the “make your own omelet” ($8.95), which she said was great. The portion sizes aren’t huge, but you won’t walk away hungry. Even Mike left satisfied.

I really enjoyed my time at SunSett Grille. The food is good, the prices are reasonable, and the view is lovely. Megan is a huge asset to SunSett Grille, and it seemed many of the regulars knew her. One thing to note is that an automatic gratuity of 18 percent is added to all checks, not just larger parties. I felt Megan well earned this, so this wasn’t an issue for me.

We spent some extra time on the patio enjoying the spicy Bloody Marys and the surroundings.

The feeling here is leisurely and welcoming, so even if you don’t golf, make the drive and check this place out. Ω

Franchise killer Kick-Ass 2 Kick-Ass 2 had barely started when I suffered a serious flashback, a flashback so vivid it felt like I had time traveled. (I was sort of high on Benadryl at the time, which can seriously mess with my mind, but at least it stops my nose from running.) I flashed back to 1989, the summer before my final year of college. I was managing a crappy discount movie theater at the by time, and I would go up the road to the nice Bob Grimm theater for the big movies a few weeks before they played at our cheap-assed theater. b g r im m @ n e ws r e v ie w. c om I was a bright-eyed optimist sitting down for a showing of Ghostbusters 2. A few short minutes into that sequel, I knew things had gone terribly wrong with a potentially great franchise.

“Do not panic! I am a super hero!”

I felt that same, sinking, nauseating feeling as Kick-Ass 2 began by recycling the already infamous bit from the original film, the one where Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) tested Hit-Girl’s (Chloe Grace Moretz) bulletproof vest. This time, Hit-Girl is firing bullets at Kick-Ass (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), and we are supposed to laugh because it’s just like the first film, right?

Wrong. The first film had a creative spark, a visual flair, and an uncanny ability to walk the line between dark satire and bad taste. It managed to parody superhero movies while actually being a decent superhero movie.

Kick-Ass 2 is a shrill, abrasive, truly disgusting misfire from a director (Jeff Wadlow) without a clue. I was tortured watching this thing. Taylor-Johnson returns as Dave, a high school student who yearns to be a superhero. Once again, he puts on a mail order costume and becomes Kick-Ass, roaming the streets looking to stop crime. While Matthew Vaughn, the original film’s director, managed to pull something charming out of TaylorJohnson, he’s just an annoying, whiny goofball in this movie.

Returning as Mindy Macready (Hit-Girl), Moretz suffers from the simple act of growing up a bit. Having a tiny 11-year-old girl kick major ass is one thing; having a fairly substantial 15-year-old kicking the same ass doesn’t have the same comic wallop or shock value.

She looks a little silly in the same getup, and her performance is surprisingly dull.

Making matters worse is a subplot where Hit-Girl gives up vigilantism and decides to give high school an honest go. This results in a by-the-numbers scenario straight out of Heathers and Mean Girls, except this one culminates in the mean girls experiencing simultaneous vomiting and explosive diarrhea, the cornerstone of any summer entertainment.

While Mindy goes to school, Kick-Ass looks for other superheroes, and hooks up with Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey) and his gang. Carrey has but a few minutes in the film, and he seems to know what movie he is supposed to be in. He’s funny, just a little sick, and looks great in his outfit. Yes, the movie is being faithful to the graphic novels that inspired it, but they should’ve found a way to make Carrey’s character play a bigger part.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse, so good in the original, delivers what will stand as one of the year’s worst performances as wannabe super-villain Chris D’Amico, bent on revenge after Kick-Ass shot his dad with a bazooka. Mintz-Plasse spends the movie screaming, decked out in bondage gear, and embarrassing himself with moments like a rape scene played for laughs. It’s sickening, really.

Carrey chose to disown this film, citing its excessive violence. Hey, maybe that was part of it, but I’m thinking he saw a rough cut of Kick-Ass 2, became fully convinced the director had crapped the bed, and decided to stay home rather than put on a fake happy face for the talk show circuit.

It’s a shame to see Taylor-Johnson, Moretz and Mintz-Plasse straining to relive the greatness of their previous effort, in much the same way it was tough watching Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis 24 years ago.

Ghostbusters, despite many rumors, never got a third movie. I’m thinking the Kick-Ass franchise will suffer that same fate. Ω

The Conjuring

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg do the buddy action movie thing, and they do it well. There’s a satisfying mixture of laughs and whiz-bang in this effort, with Washington getting a chance to really cut loose as an undercover DEA agent unknowingly working with an AWOL Navy man (Wahlberg). The two find out each other’s true identities, and join forces to take down everybody who has double-crossed them.

The film is shamelessly ridiculous, but it’s good to see Washington going for laughs, and always fun to see Wahlberg doing his manchild bit. This is Wahlberg in a mode similar to his great success with Will Ferrell in The Other Guys, while the film itself leans a little more towards the edgier side. It’s directed

by Baltasar Kormakur, who helmed the Wahlberg mess Contraband, and this proves to be a much better and less convoluted effort. Bill Paxton gets to play a bad guy, and he does it well. He’s played bastards before, but never one this sinister.

This haunted house/demon possession movie from Saw creator James Wan delivers the scary goods. Lili Taylor and Ron Livingston move their family into a nice new home that has plenty of living space, a nice yard, and a bunch of ghosts freaking them out. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson play the Warrens, real life paranormal investigators who looked into this case, as well as the Amityville Horror. Wan teases you for the first chunk of the film, trying to get scares out of closing doors and creepy sounds. Then he pulls the sheet back and goes for some really good, in-your-face frights. This is one of those movies where the family stays in the house even though freaky things are happening, and that’s a bit annoying. Still, Wan, who I used to hate for creating Saw, makes up for the stupidity with scares created without too much help from CGI. He relies on creepy lighting and makeup rather than megabytes for the most part, and he’s fashioned a good old-fashioned haunted house story as a result.

Elysium

Writer-director Neill Blomkamp follows up his strong feature-directing debut District 9 with another solid sci-fi effort, a film that delivers terrific action in service of a screenplay that takes a few missteps.

Matt Damon stars as Max, a future resident of a nearly uninhabitable planet Earth. As he struggles to get by, rich people live the good life on a huge space station. After an accident leaves him full of radiation, he must get to the space station to use one of its healing chambers. Since the rich don’t allow the poor in their digs, Max winds up getting a super robot skeleton grafted to his body in order to provide some forceful incentive to let him in. The movie is equal parts brilliant and stupid, a visual feast that almost loses it in the end due to a hokey finale. It’s still one of the year’s better big blockbusters and proof that Blomkamp is not a one hit wonder.

Jodie Foster is on hand as a narrow-minded government type who wants nothing to do with poor people. Sharlto Copley steals all of his scenes, playing against type as an evil killer agent in the service of Foster’s baddie.

Jobs

Yes, Steve Jobs was an important tech figure and, yes, I am eternally grateful to him for my many Apple gadgets, which I love more than any stupid thing I’ve ever owned in my life. That said, I don’t think he was Jesus, or even Ashton Kutcher for that matter. Kutcher grows a Jesus beard and acts sanctimonious and a bit like a douche as Jobs, depicted here as a man who would stop at nothing to get what he wanted. The film seems to be saying that we wouldn’t have iPods if Steve Jobs had never dropped acid, which might be a valid point. Kutcher isn’t terrible here, but his performance is a bit goofy at times, even cartoonish. Some of the tech stuff is interesting, such as the building of the first Apple computers in the family garage, but the depiction of Jobs is ultimately shallow. A decent supporting cast includes Josh Gad as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and Dermot Mulroney as Mike Markkula. Not a bad movie, but not a good one either.

The Wolverine

Director Lee Daniels, prominently mentioned in the film’s title after a much publicized lawsuit, delivers a fine emotional wallop with this historical epic very loosely based on the life of Eugene Allen, a butler at the White House for 34 years.

Those going to this film for its true historical significance take note: the film contains much fiction. Allen is renamed Cecil (played

by Forest Whitaker), and is given a fictional son in order to depict a family conflict regarding the Civil Rights movement. So, this film, which shows the butler interacting with presidents from Eisenhower (Robin Williams) thru Ronald Reagan (Alan Rickman), is mostly made up. That doesn’t hurt the film’s dramatic significance. It’s an ultimately moving experience. What does damage the film a bit is horrible makeup, especially a goofy fake nose for John Cusack as Richard Nixon. The makeup is sometimes so bad, that the film turns into unintentional comedy when some characters are on screen. Whitaker holds the whole thing together, and Oprah Winfrey, in her first starring role since her excellent turn in Beloved, does strong work as Cecil’s wife. Other stars playing presidents include a relatively makeup-free James Marsden as John F. Kennedy, and an absolutely covered Liev Schreiber as Lyndon B. Johnson.

Jason Sudeikis plays a small-time drug dealer who gets in over his head and is forced to smuggle drugs from Mexico by his boss (Ed Helms). Realizing that border agents seem to go easy on families, he hires a fake family to make the trip in an RV. The family includes a wife (a stripper played by Jennifer Aniston), a daughter (a homeless girl played by Emma Roberts) and a son (a hapless neighbor played by Will Poulter). The film has a Vacation movie vibe, especially because Sudeikis is charming in a way that Chevy Chase was for a brief time in his career. Aniston plays a mighty good stripper for sure; she has another calling in case the whole acting thing doesn’t work out. Roberts gets perhaps her best role yet as Casey, delivering some great eye-rolling moments.

As for Poulter, he steals scenes nearly every time he speaks, and his encounter with a tarantula is priceless. Sure, the movie gets a little gooey and sentimental by the time it plays out, but we’ve come to like the characters by then so it’s OK. It’s not a grand cinematic effort by any means, but it does provide some good laughs, with a fair share of them being quite shocking.

I’m not an X-Men Origins: Wolverine hater. I thought it was stupid fun.

Still, many despised it, so this is a new attempt to take Hugh Jackman’s Logan into a freestanding franchise. Director James Mangold goes a darker, more serious route, but proves quite adept at making action scenes.

The opening scene in Nagasaki and a fight above a bullet train are incredible. Jackman, who has a lot more veins popping than the last time we saw him, still has a blast in the title role. The plot involves an old friend of Wolverine’s looking for the key to eternal life, which Wolverine actually has, so this makes him a mutant of extra purpose. Most of the action takes place in Japan, and Wolverine loses his powers for a stretch, so we get the odd sight of him bleeding and getting lethargic. Mangold and his crew must get credit for filming two of the year’s most beautiful women, Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukushima.

Good lord, these two are remarkable looking.

Famke Janssen makes some dream appearances as Jean Grey, and, yes, stay through the credits to get what some might consider to be the film’s best scene.

That’s how we experience it.” by Brad Bynum Korostinsky is known around the local music scene for his involvebradb@ ment in funk and pop projects like newsreview.c om the Mark Sexton Band, Whatitdo and the John Whites. But his new project is something else entirely: a sun-drenched, shoegazing rock ’n’ roll duo called Synthesize Her. He teamed with songwriter and vocalist Alex Crowe to create an album of catchy, elegant rock sounds that draw liberal inspiration from ’90s bands like My Bloody Valentine, as well as evoking some of the elegant atmosphere of contemporary acts like Beach House.

machines, accompany big, swirling, fuzzy guitars and Crowe’s dynamic, commanding alto. A strong sense of melody saturates every part, even the noisy guitars.

“The trick to having a successful song ... is having great melody,” says Korostinsky. “I wanted to just soak it in melody, because I thought it deserved it. We wouldn’t be doing the song any justice if we were just like, these are the chords, this is the beat, here’s the vocals.”

But the songs always support Crowe’s vocals, which are haunting and intriguing, high enough in the mist to be center stage, but murky enough to be mysterious.

She’s originally from Melbourne, Australia, and speaks and sings with a partially buried accent.

She moved to the U.S. before high school, and came to Reno for college at the University of Nevada, Reno, studying interior design. She sang in choirs as a kid, but this is her first experience singing for a rock band.

“This is totally a project of passion,” she says. “From the beginning, it was like, this is an album for fun. We don’t give a shit what anyone thinks.

Want it to be free. I want to do one huge, crazy, mindfuck show. That was it.”

She seems bursting with energy that she’s building up to explode at the show. She claims that the group’s upcoming show at the Holland Project, 140 Vesta St., on Sept. 6 will be their only one.

They’ve assembled an all-star band for the gig. They’ll be joined by two of the best guitarists in the area, Julian Jacobs and Ryan Hall, as well as David Alastair on synthesizer and Aaron Chiazza on drums.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Sun Damage is the way it manages to evoke a specific time of year: the feeling of early summer, when the world seems young and full of possibilities, permeates all of the reverberating sounds and songs.

“The main goal we had for this album was to have it be an album of the summer,” says Korostinsky.

Since, as Korostinsky says, time is the essence of music, one hallmark of good music is that it evokes specific times of day and times of year. Sun Damage is an album of 2 p.m. on a Saturday in mid June. Ω

The project started over a year ago, just as the summer was beginning, and Crowe was struck but what she describes as a wave of inspiration, writing three songs one afternoon, and five more in the span of a couple of weeks.

She and Korostinsky were dating at the time, and she showed her song ideas to him. (They continued their creative partnership even after an amicable romantic break-up.) He loved the songs, and helped flesh out the harmonic arrangements. They recorded basic demos of the songs last summer, and then recorded and released them as a free online album, Sun Damage, earlier this summer.

The album has attracted international attention, earning some positive reviews on European websites, and it’s easy to hear why. The production is gorgeous: electronic beats, made on an iPhone but often evoking old-school drum

Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off Twenty-four of the world’s top rib cookers compete for the first-place trophy, cash prizes and the People’s Choice award at the 25th annual end-of-summer event. More than 500,000 people are expected to congregate in downtown during the six-day festival, which includes the Rib Eating Championships on opening day, free entertainment, arts and craft booths and a kids’ area with carnival rides, inflatable games, rides and slides. Main stage entertainment includes Diego’s Umbrella on Wednesday, Aug. 28, Keller Williams on Thursday, Aug. 29, The Fabulous Thunderbirds on Friday, Aug. 30, Mark Chesnutt on Saturday, Aug. 31, Bad Company with Brian Howe on Sunday, Sept. 1, and Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen on Sept. 2.

The cook-off winner will be announced on Sept. 2. The rib fest takes place between 14th Street and Pyramid Way along Victorian Avenue in downtown Sparks. The gates are open from 11 a.m to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, through Sunday, Sept. 1, and 11 am. to 5 pm. on Monday, Sept. 2. The fifth international beer festival celebrates the growing trend of canning beer and its purported benefits such as protecting taste, lightening travel loads and convenient packaging.

Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series: Silver State Showdown The off-road racing event features huge dirt jumps that launch 900-horsepower trucks into the air, followed by steep downhill stretches that push racers to the highest speeds in the series.

The three-day event also includes a “Free Friday” opening day in which spectators can tour the pits, meet the drivers and see the machines that will compete on the track on Saturday and Sunday. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, through Sunday, Aug. 25, at Wild West Motorsports Park, 12005 Interstate 80 east at exit 23 (Mustang exit). Nevada Humane Society Duck Race & Festival About 15,000 rubber ducks will race down the Truckee River on Sunday, Aug. 25, during the fourth annual fund-raising event for Nevada Humane Society. The day’s festivities begin shortly after 11 a.m. with live music, games, activities, food and refreshments and a pet adoption booth at Wingfield Park, First Street and Arlington Avenue in downtown Reno. The musical lineup includes Rumble, VooDoo Dogz, Farewell Belladonna and MoMatik. Admission is free to the festival. Visitors can adopt a duck for $5 or up to 50 ducks for $200 prior to the start of the race, which begins at 4 p.m. Entrants get a chance to win a variety of prizes and a $400,000 cash prize. and as a “Big Brother” to “Little Brother”, Dominic, age 16. Both are focused on their studies, sports, talking about girls, and being good friends.

After listening to a presentation about Big Brothers Big Sisters on campus, Chris took a look at his own life and realized he could use his free time in a positive way. He called the Reno agency and soon after, Chris was matched with Dominic.

“Our friendship has given me meaning and let me mix it up and get away from my daily grind,” he said. Chris and Dominic see each other each Saturday and never lack for activities, some of which are sponsored by the agency.

Dominic’s father and older brothers were absent when he was young and his mother thought that a “Big Brother” might help him improve his social relationships as well as his school grades. On the occasion of their first meeting, Chris and Dominic tossed a football, took a tour of UNR, and met Dominic’s grandparents. They checked out “Spice Island” along the Truckee River. It was Chris who was afraid to get in the cold water, but Dominic dove right in.

Dominic watched one of his siblings drop out of high school and yield to excessive drinking and partying. After he failed a grade and his mother cried, Dominic realized, “It was time to get my act together. I’d upset my mother and disappointed her. Chris helped me deal with things and learn to rely on myself to solve problems.”

Chris doesn’t take credit for Dominic’s recent success in school and with his football, wrestling, baseball, track, and swimming activities. “I’ve told him to step up and take responsibility for his life,” Chris said and Dominic recently received all “A’s” and just one “B” on his Progress Report from Sparks High School.

Dominic has also reached Cadet Captain status with the Jr. ROTC program and said he wants to be a Navy SEAL in honor of his grandfather, a Navy veteran. Think Free Barn yesterday For two summers, I’ve traveled to work on a small organic farm. There, this woman and I had this amazing romance, including lovemaking during summer thunderstorms and dancing naked in the fields! It was all very romantic, and this spring, I moved across the country to live with her. I soon discovered that she was infatuated with a man living several hours away. She even pointed out ways she wanted me to be more like him. After a heartbreaking month feeling worthless, foolish and ignored, I left. In retrospect, she showed signs of her selfcenteredness on the farm, such as compulsively talking about herself and a habit of dropping friends instead of working out conflicts. Somehow, I still long for her, and I can’t bring myself to unpack my things because they remind me of the love we shared.

The opportunity to dance naked in the fields with some hot hippiechick does explain some of the allure of your “hay-cation.” Still, my ancestors clawed their way out of some peasant existence in Eastern Europe not that long ago, so if I’m going to pick lettuce, it’ll be from a menu handed to me by a guy who also asks whether Madame would like more wine.

How could you not see that you were just another crop to be rotated? Well, because you allowed yourself to fall prey to “confirmation bias,” our tendency to seek out information that confirms what we want to believe and to shut out information that says, “Come on … really?” When we make up our minds about something—especially something that shines up our self-image—we tend to make them up like beds with the sheets glued to the mattress.

Understanding this tendency is the best way to root out the ugly truth, the one suggesting that the summer romance is just a summer romance, since trying to squeeze love (or a scrap of empathy) out of a narcissistic person is about as productive as trying to squeeze orange juice out of a desk lamp. Sure, in the moment, it’s more fun to believe “She loves me, she really loves me!” but forcing yourself to take a few skeptical walks through the less than ideal bits about a woman can help you avoid spending a long winter weepily harvesting everything in sight at another farm—Pepperidge Farm.

It can be, depending on what the concentrations are. We’ve been getting some good mixing in the afternoons, but not every afternoon. This fire has been changing very rapidly.

I personally feel like I have allergic symptoms. Is that likely?

It wouldn’t surprise me. Yes. And actually your body is the best indicator. If you are feeling the symptoms, or if you smell the smoke, and you feel the symptoms, you should take precautions, such as staying indoors with the windows closed and the air conditioner on, reducing strenuous activity and drinking lots of water.

I always wonder this. This feels like second-hand smoke, like when you’re in a casino. Is it actually carcinogenic or are there longterm problems associated with it?

We have some good air quality information on our website. It’s ourcleanair.com. That will take you right to the Air Quality Management Division website. Normally this is our ozone season, so we would be expecting ozone, but this wildfire is causing the PM 2.5 levels [particulate matter that are two and one half microns or less in width] to increase quite a bit. Also with these PM 2.5 levels, it’s not unusual to see these type of levels in the wintertime, when we have those strong wintertime temperature inversions, and that’s when we call those red burn codes.

It could have long-term problems if you’re exposed to it for a long period of time and exposed to higher concentrations. It’s different from cigarette smoke, but it is fine particulates that do go deep down into your respiratory system.

Back in the old days, like 300 years ago, wouldn’t our air be like this all the time? If there was a fire, wouldn’t it have just burned?

Yes, but I haven’t seen any warnings like that with this fire.

The air quality index has been kind of floating around from the upper 80s and 90s into the 100s, 110s, 120s. One thing with that is it really changes very quickly. ...

There would be smoke in the air, but not to this extent. We’ve gone through many years of suppressing all fires, and the fuel loading is really increased. So when we have these fires, it’s really burning a lot of the forest that would have burned naturally.

Sunday, within 45 minutes, it went from blue skies to where I could see swirls of smoke in the air.

Is there anything that can be done besides staying inside? Are there other treatments?

What caused that was there were thunderstorms on the other side of the Sierra, and thunderstorms have downdrafts, and that downdraft pushed the smoke from the fire east into the Truckee Meadows. It came in like a coastal fog. Ω

Those would be the best measures: to reduce exposure, and then also reduce strenuous physical activity.

Normally, it used to be spring, summer and fall, but we’ve seen wildfires in the wintertime with the Washoe Drive Fire and the Caughlin Fire. The fire season is becoming longer.

Is there anything else we should talk about?

As smoke from the American Fire in Placer County had Northern Nevadans choking, gagging and wheezing, we got to wondering, just how bad is this? Turns out, not as bad as those winter inversions, says Daniel Inouye, branch chief for the Air Quality Division of Washoe County.

Junior’s numbers sure weren’t anything to snort at, with his 56 homers and 146 RBI. And leave us not forget one Juan Gonzalez of the Texas Rangers, who chipped in nicely with a 45 and 157 year. In the midst of this blizzard of monster numbers, I remember all these reporters back then wondering what the heck was going on with all these stats, and many of those writers concluding that, well, somehow, the ball must be livelier.

In retrospect, that’s kinda accurate.

It now appears that Congress has had its feelings hurt or something, because its response to its approval ratings (now measured in fractions) appears to have been the adoption of a “Well, if that’s the way you feel about it, America, fine. We just won’t do anything. See how you like that.”

It’s sorta like—Congress finally figures out its dysfunctional. So it sends the functionality question to a committee for investigation. Only the committee, comprised of members that can’t function, completely breaks down, gives up, and starts throwing sandwiches at each other. But not before it discusses a way to shut down the government, reduce the national credit rating, and ban health insurance forever. Ω

through the Scary When Paige Was 14 her mother died. But first came the sickness years where the attention focused on her mother, and the daughter felt lost. It really wasn’t anyone’s fault. No one noticed if she didn’t eat, not until she became very, very thin. Then Paige found that drinking made her feel happy and social. It helped her hide her emotions from herself.

“I am an only child and my father worked nights. After my mom died, he would give me money whenever I asked, and basically he just turned away and did not see. I manipulated him.”

Paige went from drinking to smoking pot, to coke, ecstasy, and then pain killers. She never thought she would do heroin, but then one day....she did, with a childhood friend.

“It was cheaper, easy to get, and for a time, made me feel better.”

“My aunt could see what was going on, but she had no power. It wasn’t until my dad found evidence in the house, that he had to face it.” Paige says she quit cold turkey with her aunt’s help. But then she needed to take on the work of staying sober. Paige started going to a 12 step program and seeing a counselor. “You have do it for yourself or it won’t work.”

Paige attends UNR and she was frustrated by the culture, “Sometime I just felt lost in a sea of people who just drink all the time and talk about partying, which is a trigger.”

She wanted to connect with other university students who were interested in a sober life. About this time N-Rap (Nevada’s Recovery & Prevention Community) started at UNR and Paige became involved. “When I first went it was just the teacher Daniel Fred, and one other student. I left thinking I’m the only person in college who wants to be sober.”

N-Rap has grown and Paige is now very involved. “There are no rules to be a member. We advocate living sober and provide a safe place on campus in between classes to hang out. It’s a cool place to touch base and be okay.”

Paige’s advice to parents: “Pay attention. You will know if something is wrong.”

Her advice to addicts: “Look for a 12-step program that fits you and if you are in college seek out the sober community. If your school does not have one, think about starting one! Being involved can save you.”

s much as I enjoy being a college student, I am dreading Monday’s arrival, and I can’t help but wish I felt the same excitement for the first day of school as I did when I was moving into Argenta Hall my freshman year. I was ready to start my new life away from home, meet all new people and learn all new things, so everything was exciting. I’ll admit that—even though I’m more than ready to graduate this spring—I’m jealous of this new crop of freshmen.

If I’ve learned anything in these last years, it’s that getting involved and knowing what’s happening on campus can make your experience better than you could ever have expected. So take this guide, read it and start your year out just a little bit wiser.

If you’re new to Reno—or even if you’re local and want to know more about your town, we included a story that will give you some items to place on your college bucket list. And for all of you new to the University of Nevada, Reno, I sat down with Vice President for Student Services Shannon Ellis, and we talked about what things you should know about and do while you’re at the university. You’ll also find a list of important phone numbers (including a few local food places), a list with short explanations of some of the most important services available on campus and a story about how to handle the dorms. And if you’re looking for advice on how to handle all of this new territory, recent alumnus Stephany Kirby shares her wisdom about how to make the best of your time at UNR, and Megan Ortiz talks about why you need to do more than just show up.

Body re-image College became a time to change more than just my mind

I

was nearing the end of my freshman year of college when I decided to face my fear of the scale and go to the doctor for an eye infection. The scale is something so miniscule in many people’s lives. But in mine, it was everything.

I had always been overweight. I had the whole range of experience from the bullying in elementary school to facing the popularity contest that is high school. I grew up with that target on my back. It was the “fat” target. I was pretty, but I was fat. I had a great personality, but I was fat.

I avoided doctors’ offices because I didn’t want to be told what I already knew—that I needed to lose weight.

The day I faced the scale I didn’t really have a choice. The nurse told me to stand on the scale, and I did. I took the tiny step onto that square box and I saw “0.00” and then dashes. The next number said “307.” I was 307 pounds.

Later, the doctor came in and said, “You have high blood pressure. You need to lose weight.”

That realization began my journey to losing 150 pounds throughout the past two years of college. I like to say that I lost the Freshman 150, rather than the Freshman 15. Initially, I used a program called Medifast for my weight loss journey. However, this was a lifestyle change.

It wasn’t just a diet. And it wasn’t easy living a healthy lifestyle in a college atmosphere filled with greasy food and pressure to drink alcohol. I went through experiences that tested my willpower and taught me how to maintain a healthy lifestyle while having a fulfilling college experience.

I don’t care if you don’t “like” breakfast—eat it

Drink, but be mindful of it

Before I changed my lifestyle, my breakfast was 16 ounces of sugary white chocolate mocha bliss. If I didn’t feel like buying a mocha, then I would put a tad bit of coffee in a cup and fill it to the brim with creamer. This wasn’t a real breakfast, and it definitely didn’t jumpstart my metabolism like breakfast is supposed to do.

“It is really important to get that first meal in quickly within an hour of waking up because that breaks the fast overnight,” Enid Jennings, health educator at UNR, said. “Researchers have found that individuals who eat a healthy breakfast are more likely to be at a healthy weight and less likely to over-eat later on because their bodies are getting the food they need.”

Today, I mix Medifast hot cocoa with coffee to make a mocha-like concoction, and I look forward to drinking it each morning. I found a way to make something I love into a healthier option. Even if it’s something as small as a granola bar on the way to class, eat something. Your body needs it. Scramble eggs with veggies for a quick and healthy breakfast.

Along with the breakfast concept is eating every two to three hours throughout the day. How often do we let ourselves get too hungry, and then we grab whatever is closest, no matter the grams of sugar, and stuff our faces?

“You need to recognize your body’s cue of hunger, but also understand when you’re full,” Jennings said.

My sophomore year, when I began to change my lifestyle, I lived with four other girls who didn’t care what they ate or drank. It became routine that we would drink, then go to a party and drink more, and then go to Jack in the Box or McDonald’s for a meal at 2 a.m. I wanted to participate, and I did, but I was mindful of what I was doing.

If I went out, I subsisted on diet coke and rum. I allotted calories for those drinks in my daily count.

Whenever we went to fast food, I would think about how bad I wanted to go to a party and not feel “fat,” and how badly I wanted to dance without being self conscious.

The entire year I was surrounded by girls eating the stereotypical college meals of Top Ramen and Mac and Cheese and cereal while I was off to the side with my broccoli and chicken.

“Alcoholic beverages can be really high in calories, so you can’t forget that those calories are contributing to the amount of calories you have in a day,” Jennings said.

“Research has shown that at the end of the day, we often omit those calories and they haven’t provided our body with any sort of satisfaction.”

So ask yourself, do you really need that sugary chaser, or can you make a slightly healthier decision?

When I began working out, I eased into it by focusing on lifting because that’s what I enjoyed. I couldn’t believe my stamina. I had never had a body that allowed me to easily tie my shoes, let alone do step-ups with eight-pound weights. I fell in love with exercise.

Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t jump into the idea of exercise. I took it slow. I started with lifting weights, then I began using the elliptical, and lastly, I did the Ease into 5k program for running. I began attending classes at Lombardi, formed relationships with trainers and one even began calling me a “regular.”

There is a common misconception that students have to schedule in an hour to go to the gym every day, but really all you have to do is move. Walk instead of using the shuttle, or squeeze in a walk or run in between classes.

“We spend a lot of time arguing over what’s the best physical activity, but I always say the best exercise is the one you enjoy and the one you will do, then it won’t be a chore,” Jennings said.

The “Freshman 15” scare tactic is just that, a myth. In reality, most students only gain about 5 pounds, but by making these healthy changes, even that poundage can be avoided.

Although Reno’s events happen year-round, August is the perfect season to start college here because of the cooling weather and events for all ages.

Speak up You really want to get something from your college years? Engage.

B

y nature, I am not a shy person. I am the girl who always has something to say, who always wants to be involved and engaged in (almost) every aspect of everything.

This was not the case when I began my education at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Surely, if you just keep quiet, keep your head down, show up to class and get the work done, you will be OK, right? You will leave UNR with a degree worth about as much as the price of a vehicle or two and know that you were there for every second of it, diligently pounding away at the expectations of a rigid university system designed to force you into a well-rounded education.

But, I mean, you weren’t really there.

What benefit can really be had from keeping quiet? Keeping quiet means you will inevitably miss out on all the awesome shared knowledge of your classmates and, more importantly, your professor.

I promise you: Your professor’s knowledge far exceeds that of which they speak in the classroom. Simply showing up is not enough. If you find yourself leaving class with lingering questions on the day’s lecture, do not allow the overwhelming fear of waltzing into your professor’s office hours too daunting to actually do so.

Don’t allow that fear of admitting that you need help deter you from turning to the person sitting next to you and forming an alliance. Classroom alliances can and should be strong and helpful. I have found more productivity and higher grades have been produced from group study sessions and discussions than from solo ones.

But you aren’t a people person. You like working by yourself. You hear the words “group project” and shudder at the thought that you must now rely on others to maintain the level of excellence you feel you maintain in the class.

That’s where trust comes into play. Honestly, there are far more productive and intelligent people around you than lazy ones, and everyone has different bits of knowledge that can prove useful in many kinds of situations. After all, they got into the same university you did, right?

The truth is, college forces you to overcome your fear of the public domain. It is terrifying to admit you need help and act on it—but, if anything, you will find that not only are your professors and colleagues happy to help engage you outside of class, but more often than not, simply showing that initiative will lead to a better grade.

Breaking the ice is the hardest part, but to get through the struggles of first day jitters, just do the obvious: embrace the awkwardness that everyone else is also feeling.

S

hannon Ellis, vice president for Student Services at the University of Nevada, Reno, is passionate about helping students via the various services on campus and talks about what new students, especially freshmen, should know before they start out their university career.

What’s your role here at the university? What do you actually do?

My responsibility is all the things that touch students’ lives prior to getting here—so recruitment and outreach—once they get here—orientation, residence halls, student union, mental health, counseling—all the things that support students while they’re here, and then we’re responsible for commencement and career services to help students find jobs when they leave. The easy answer is things that help students succeed outside the classroom as opposed to the learning that goes on inside.

What’s your favorite part of all that?

When I come to work today, this could sound pretentious or foolhardy, but I really believe that the work I do and

everybody in this division—more than 150 people—we change people’s lives everyday. Our ability to change a student’s life is [my] favorite part of the job because we can say “yes” more than we need to say “no.” Gosh, let’s think about how you might create an internship in China.

We don’t have anything over there, but let’s think about how we can make that happen. You know what? OK, you’ve run out of money. We’ve exhausted all of these possibilities; let’s see if we can find another way. We’ll get you a part-time job on campus. Maybe we’ll help you spread your classes out over summer and wintermester.

We’ll put you on a payment plan. Those kinds of things aren’t small. They help somebody move along towards whatever their goal is. And I love having a job like that.

What I do and say and how we act towards students, the policies—sometimes we say, “Gosh. I don’t know why we make you do that. Let’s think about another way to help you be successful.” So that’s really my favorite part about it. And, of course, working with students. I mean, why else would you be in student services? You love working with students, and they are very challenging. And that’s good.

Who wants mundane? We help you be inquisitive and challenge authority. We try to pull those things out of you when you get here if you didn’t come to us that way, so then we shouldn’t be surprised when you go, “Well, why?

How can we change that? Don’t you think we should be a little bit more innovative?” So I love that part of the job, too. It means what we’re doing is working.

For incoming freshmen, what do you think are the important things to prep themselves to come here?

Some of the things that I think are the most important— this is not high school anymore. You are at a university that does global high-end research, and you will be participating in that research with your faculty. The expectations of you at a university are so much different.

The number one thing students tell us is they’re shocked by how much reading they have to do as compared to high school. We have high expectations, but I also say that we would not have let you in if we didn’t think you could do this. And just what I told you—student services is here to support you. We have tutors, and we have people who will help you with anxiety issues and so on and so forth.

But I want them to realize that you can’t just act like you acted in high school because the demands are greater, the expectations are higher, and you’ll be surrounded by really smart people. Maybe you were the smartest, but maybe you’re not the smartest here. Just understand it might take me three hours to read a book, and it might take you only an hour. Judge yourself just by what you need to do. …

I tell freshmen that in order to be successful you need to learn how to ask for help because all of us are here to help them. You will have failures and bumps in the road,

and I just kind of try to tell them that. You will mess up your first paper, and be OK with that as long as you sit with your faculty member and say, “What did I do wrong?

What are you expecting of me? How do I learn that?”

That’s really hard for a lot people, so we try to emphasize to freshmen that the minute you run into something you don’t understand, you go ask for help. ... I tell freshmen to sit in the front row. Just by sitting in the front row, you will learn more and the faculty will remember you. That’s to your advantage. They’ll engage you, so you won’t fall asleep. You will pay attention. You will learn, and you’ll be more comfortable with the class. These are very simple but important things. Don’t wait til the end if you’re in trouble with a class. I say to hang around smart people. Go find the smart people in your class and form a study group.

Study groups help you learn, and you always do better on your papers and exams when you form study groups. … I tell them to go to class. You have all this freedom, but go to class. When I see a student get an F in a class, and I’m meeting with them, I say that I bet they didn’t go to class because they’re not dumb. And they say, “Yeah. You know it was too early or it was boring.” In life you’re going to have boring parts of your job, you’re going to have to learn to stick it out or make it interesting. All of these are life skills that I’m sharing with you that we tell freshmen.

These are important things to cultivate. It is true that some people want to go to college to party, and I tell freshmen that if that’s the reason you’re here, you don’t have to pay all this money and sign up for these classes to party. … Think about why you’re going to the university, and I really try to get them to spend a little time thinking about that. And it might change. I’m coming to be a doctor. We get a lot of pre-med students here. Or I’m coming to get a really good job. Or I’m coming to become a learned person. Or I don’t know why, but there’s something about this environment that just excites me, being around people from all these countries and different parts of Nevada.

This just seems to be the place where all the action is.

Give that some thought, not just that your parents said you had to go here or you didn’t know what else to do because if you have a reason, it’s a good motivator. So we try to get students to focus on that and think about it on a regular basis. It’s really not rocket science, but they’re all keys to success. If students don’t know why they’re here, if students don’t ask for help, if students party too much and don’t go to class, they won’t be successful.

What do you think students should be doing while they’re here?

It’s a full experience. We hear so often from students, “I chose to come to UNR because it is a real college experience.” I want students—whatever that means to them—to experience it. I’ve had more students tell me, “I went and sat on the quad with a book and just thought

and that was a college moment for me. I went to a football game. I sat in the front row of a really scary class because you told me to do it, and I actually understood a concept and had an ah-ha moment. I’m learning like a college student.” I want them to have successes and new experiences. I want them to fulfill their fantasy of what a university experience is like, so if it’s walking across the quad with your laptop going to your engineering class and just feeling like you belong here, that’s great. … I want students to take advantage of being engaged. Go to Night of all Nations this fall, where there’s 80 countries serving food and putting on dance and music, and it’s just this pulsing 4,000 people having a great international experience. Do those things. Go to everything. Be open to everything. Meet people who are not like you at all. ... Don’t sit in your room. Don’t be afraid, and if you are afraid, I understand that. Go ahead and say, “You know what? I’m going to learn how to overcome this.” You don’t have to do it alone. That’s back to asking for help. I want students to be over in that union, having a Starbucks, listening to a poetry reading and saying, “Oh my gosh. I’m listening to a poetry reading. This is not me, and I’m kind of enjoying it.” I say to students sometimes, “Surprise your mother.” And by that I mean, I would like to go up to your mother when she’s on campus bringing you back for your sophomore year and say, “Your son was so great in that play last spring. He was singing and dancing in Grease.” And your mom says, “My son? No. That’s not my son. My son would never do anything like that.” I’m trying to say that you get to make who you want to be here. Take advantage of that, and break out of all of the expectations everybody else has put on you, which may be kind and loving and even accurate, but here you get to be the scientist you weren’t or the artist or the outgoing person or the reflective scholar who’s thinking and philosophizing. You get to create this person that you want to be without any limitations. Really.

What do you think are the most important services that incoming students should know about?

I think Academic Support Services are number one. Using your faculty, tutoring, supplemental instruction—we look at the more difficult freshmen classes … so we hire students who got As in the class to take the class again and lead supplemental classes. So students go to class and then they go to supplemental class where they kind of go through the class all over again. You want to go to supplemental instruction. Students get entire grades higher after SI. Writing Center, Math Center in addition to the tutoring and SI—I think that’s a really critical service.

I’ll tell you another service that is really important—the counseling center. I am so glad [there] aren’t stigmas

associated with that. Students are very good about saying, “You know what? I need to talk to somebody about this.

I need to talk to someone about my relationship. I need to talk to them about anxiety and stress I’m experiencing in and outside the classroom. I need to talk to them about what might be an alcohol problem.” Students are really great about it when they need it … or, “My roommate’s really in trouble. I want her to get help.”… I think Lombardi Rec is a really important service. I think students need to take care of their body and be healthy.

Get in there and climb the rock wall or go in the pool or get on the treadmill. … Hang out in the union. Just hang out. It’s made to be a place where you grab a cup of coffee and hang out and watch the world go by. … I’ll throw in another one: the Campus Escort Service. That’s run out of the student government. Take advantage of those free vans and escorts from campus to where you live around the perimeter a couple miles.

What do you think is the best thing you can tell an incoming freshmen?

Take advantage of everything there is to do here. Don’t get to your senior year and say, “I didn’t know I could do that.

I didn’t know I could study abroad. I didn’t know I could do an internship downtown.” Just soak it all up. Write it all down. You won’t do it all right away, but take it all in.

And then here’s the pivotal point of all that—develop a plan. This is earth-shattering what I just said to you. Have a plan. You can change the plan, but you have to plan it out. I’m a freshman. I think I want to study abroad. Let’s talk a little more, so you can plan to do that your junior year because your junior year is here before you know it.

Develop a plan, but be flexible. Develop an academic plan for all your semesters. That way you can be smart about it and not forget the one class. … You can change your plan.

You can change your major, but start to develop a plan as you get here. So if you do want to do an internship, don’t wait until your senior year because you may find out that you don’t want to be a teacher. Better you find out as a sophomore than as a senior and about to graduate. And this is not only going to ensure you take advantage of everything and you don’t miss out, but it’s also going to ensure you graduate in four years. There is no reason you can’t graduate in four years. ... And you’re not on your own to plan this. Everybody has an academic advisor that will sit and work it through with you. Every time we finish an orientation, I’m so envious of the students. You have no idea what you’re in for. Your head should be spinning from all the cool things that are going to happen.

Navigating life in the dorms

M

any of you incoming freshmen have decided to live in the dorms just as I did for my freshman year. I wanted to have the “full college experience” when I made the move up to Reno from Henderson. I didn’t have a clue what to expect or what I even meant by the “full college experience,” but I knew my—and probably most of your—reasons for electing to live on campus. And I was excited to have that experience, just like you all are right now. Here’s a few things I learned along the way that might help you out in the long run.

No more Mommy and Daddy This seems, oh, so obvious. Mommy and Daddy aren’t in your dorm making you dinner, forcing you to clean or nagging you to finish your homework before it’s 3 a.m. But, for me, this was the biggest realization I had after moving into my cramped room in Argenta with two friends. I’ve always been a procrastinator, but when I got to college, I became the all-time queen. My roommates would long be asleep when I would start my homework for the next day in the faint glow of my desk lamp. I was used to growing up with parents who enforced the rule that I had to be in bed with my homework completed by 11, which also meant that friends weren’t over much on weeknights, or at least not for

long. This changed when I got to college. I had friends over or was out with them on weeknights well into the wee hours of the morning, but I quickly learned that three or four hours of sleep a night wasn’t going to work out with a full load of classes. Mom and Dad’s absence isn’t just solved with a meal plan—trust me. You have to teach yourself to manage your time.

Clean your dorm, seriously My roommates and I were bad at this. In fact, we really only cleaned when there was a reason—someone was coming to visit and stay with us or the room had gotten so messy that I sprained my ankle tripping over an empty water bottle hidden by clothes on the floor (true story). The truth of the matter was that my roommates and I knew each other too well, and the three of us were stubborn enough to keep on waiting until the other girl cleaned. The result was no visible floor and a room that was much worse than any boys’ room I have ever seen. Your dorm room is supposed to be a fun place to hang out with your roommates and friends and a functional space for studying. Not cleaning it makes it hard for it to be used the way you want to, and it can be a danger to your ankles. Plus, it makes a really bad impression on potential boyfriends or girlfriends.

Contrary to popular opinion, you really don’t need to be friends with your roommates. Oftentimes your friends are the absolute worst people for you to live with because roommate disagreements can really ruin the whole “forever” part of the “best friends forever” mantra you’ve been singing since kindergarten. It happened to me, so just make sure that you really know you can live with your friend before signing a lease. And I’ve also lived with people that I didn’t know at all and never really clicked with. Although I never considered them my friends, I never had any issue living with them. It was actually really easy and pleasant. One thing I learned: You’re way more likely to clean up after yourself immediately when your roommate isn’t a friend. And cleanliness is at the root of a vast majority of arguments that roommates have. In the end, all that matters is that you’re courteous and respectful of your roommate and their stuff.

Don’t be passive aggressive There is nothing more annoying than someone who won’t just say it when something you did bothers them. I’ve lived with passive girls a couple of different times, and it’s absolutely terrible. So don’t be that girl. When you’re living with someone, you have to be frank with them. If you’re not, no one will end up happy. If it bothers you that your roommate throws their clothes on the floor or eats your food out of the fridge, tell them immediately.

Helpful hints Where to find the most useful services on campus

’ve heard it so many times. Students don’t find out about something awesome and useful on campus until a year or three after they need it. This list will help you know before you need it.

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) The DRC is one of those things that may not be needed by all students, but it’s incredibly helpful for students who do. The DRC is there for any student with any kind of disability, including but not limited to learning disabilities, physical disabilities (even temporary ones) and mental disabilities. They can help by providing things like alternative testing environments, classroom aids, a confidential note taker or alternative media for your classes. They also can test you if you’re unsure whether you need the DRC’s help.

Counseling Services Counseling Services can help you sort through a hard break-up, manage your stress or even help you deal with addiction issues. These services are free to students and extremely useful.

Math Center The Math Center is available to all UNR students for help with any math class or concept. They have free drop-in tutoring and a computer lab equipped with current mathematics and statistics software.

University Writing Center The University Writing Center has oneon-one and group tutoring for anything related to writing. You can also make an appointment to help you out with your next paper for any class or topic.

Campus Escort Within a two-mile boundary of campus, you can call 742-6808, visit nevada. ridecell.com or use the This Is Nevada app on your smartphone to get Campus Escort to pick you up. The starting point or end point of the ride must be on campus, which includes Greek houses, so this is a great way to get home safely between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Subject Liaison Librarians There is a librarian who can help you find information for your paper—no matter the subject. If you go online, you can find the contact information for the librarian that specializes in whatever you need, and they can help you find and use subject-specific resources and tools. This is really great if you don’t know where to start out for a research paper.

New friends can help or hinder

ollege is a time that most young adults see as the chance to re-invent themselves. You are given the opportunity to be anyone you want to be and make choices you may not have made in high school. Suddenly, you are living on your own and, if you are like most freshmen and choose to live in the dorm, you are surrounded by hundreds of other students who have the potential to become your new circle of friends. For many, this is an exciting opportunity to branch out and meet new types of people, but for others, it can be a scary time filled with heart-wrenching thoughts of leaving behind friends and family. However, there are a few things to remember when making new friends in college.

It is important to know that there will be people who are different than you. Dorms are full of diversity, from jocks and band members to skateboarders and constant studiers. There will be students of different races and ethnic backgrounds, and they will have come from different parts of the country and world. What you need to remember is that it’s OK. People are going to think differently than you, enjoy different activities than you, and do things differently than you, but in the end, you are all there for the same reason, and it is important to build a community around that.

Embrace the difference and learn from people that you never would have spent time with in high school because college is about trying new things and opening yourself up to all kinds of possibilities.

The last thing you must remember is that it is important to make friends with individuals who bring out the best in you. It is easy to fall into friendships because you have lots of classes together, are on the same flag football team or live in the same dorm room, but these are not always the best friendships to make. I recommend making friends with students who are going to encourage you to succeed, make you feel like a better version of yourself and are there for you when you need them to be.

College can be a lonely time, being away from home for the first time and deciding what you want to do with your life, so it is always helpful to have a support system you know you can count on, not just a group of friends who also like to play Frisbee in the quad.
