Roy Rogers and the Delta Rhythm Kings
The blues/rock slide guitarist headlines a benefit concert this weekend. Rogers has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards as well as two W.C. Handy Awards. As a recording artist, as well as a producer and composer, he has recorded with Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Steve Miller, Sammy Hagar and other artists. His recent collaboration with the late Ray Manzarek, Translucent Blues, debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard charts, and reached No. 1 on the American Roots Rock Chart in 2011. Rogers will be joined by the Delta Rhythm Kings featuring Steve Ehrmann on bass guitar and Billy Lee Lewis on percussion. Local band Ignition will open the show, which starts at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St, Carson City. Tickets are $26. The show will benefit the Comstock Residents Association’s efforts to preserve and protect the Virginia City National Historic Landmark from the effects of open-pit surface mining. Hot August Nights
Arguably the area’s biggest special event of the year kicks off this weekend, Aug. 2-3, with show-n-shines, poker walks, automotive exhibits and more at MontBleu Resort, 55 Highway 50, Stateline. The 27th annual celebration of classic cars and rock ’n’ roll music moves to Reno starting with the Pre-Kickoff Party on Sunday, Aug. 4, at Bonanza Casino, 4720 N. Virginia St., and then continues on Aug. 6-11 with nightly cruises, drag races and burn-outs, the Hot August Nights Car Auction presented Barrett Jackson, a car parade through downtown Reno, live entertainment on various stages at venues across Reno and Sparks. Lake Tahoe SummerFest
The classical music festival features the stirring strains of musical masterpieces in an intimate outdoor setting. The festival kicks off on Friday, Aug. 2, with a concert by mezzo soprano Frederica von Stade and the Lake Tahoe SummerFest Orchestra conducted by Maestro Joel Revzen. More than 40 virtuoso musicians from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the symphonies of San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver and others make up the seasonal orchestra. Six renowned soloists, including von Stade, violinist Jennifer Koh, pianist Benjamin Hochman, harpist Meredith Clark, flutist Demarre McGill and composer and trombonist Chris Brubeck will perform with the orchestra in a series of concerts on the weekends of Aug. 2-4, Aug. 9-11 and Aug. 16-18. Orchestra programs are Friday evenings at 7 p.m. Family concerts are Sunday afternoons at 4 p.m. Chamber music concerts will be held on Saturdays at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12.50-$75. Political Collectibles Show & Sale
The American Political Item Collectors’ biennial convention bills itself as the “largest political collectibles show and sale in the West.” There will be thousands of vintage political campaign buttons, posters, advertising and sports pinbacks, presidential ephemera, pop culture items and antique Americana, as well as free appraisals by professional experts. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, 3800 S. Jazz & Beyond: Carson City Music Festival
The ninth annual music festival features performances by local, regional and international jazz artists and musicians from other genres. The opening day event is the Garden Party— Gatsby Style at the Governor’s Mansion, 606 Mountain St., Carson City, on Friday, Aug. 2, at 5:30 p.m. The event features music by Cami Thompson and Friends, finger foods, wine, beer, classic cars and a raffle. Tickets are $35-$40. Other highlights include the Roy Rogers concert on Saturday, Aug. 3, “The History of Rock and Roll” presentation by John Shipley at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St., and a Speakeasy Dance Party at 8p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, at the BAC. Tickets for the dance party are $15.
