Is it a Heart Attack? Know the signs and save a life Cardiovascular disease remains the No. 1 killer of men and women in the United States,* in part because heart attack victims often don’t recognize the symptoms and delay getting care. If you or someone you are with experiences symptoms of a possible heart attack, the first thing to do is dial 9-1-1 and get to the nearest hospital.

Signs of a Possible Heart Attack When someone goes into cardiac arrest, it can become a race against the clock to save his or her life. Know the warning signs so that you can take quick action: y Uncomfortable pain, pressure, fullness and/or squeezing in the chest y Pain or discomfort in the shoulders, neck, arms or jaw y Lightheadedness, fainting or sweating y Unusual stomach or abdominal pain y Nausea or dizziness y Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing y Unexplained anxiety, weakness or fatigue y Palpitations, cold sweat or paleness

Don’t Wait! Take Action If you suspect that you or someone you are with is experiencing a possible heart attack, call 9-1-1 immediately. DO NOT EVER attempt to drive to the hospital yourself. By calling an ambulance, life-saving treatment can begin on your way to the hospital and the Emergency Department can prepare for your arrival. DO NOT wait to seek medical attention. Not all of the warning signs occur in every attack, and the signs can sometimes disappear and return.

Heart Attack Treatment Time is critical. Waiting too long before receiving appropriate medical treatment may increase the amount of heart damage that occurs, and could be the difference between life and death. At Northern Nevada Medical Center, emergency intervention for heart attacks is coordinated with a multidisciplinary emergency team that includes cardiologists, surgeons and specially trained staff. Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I saw The Lone Ranger on July 3, paying the Costco ticket price for myself, my girl and my son. What a piece of shit. I can’t remember ever being actually offended by the lack of quality in a movie before, although I have complained about the cowardice and lack of creativity in movie studios the last few years or so.

But The Lone Ranger’s remarkable stupidity has left me still shaking my head two days later. This movie unquestionably aimed at the lowest common denominator of the viewing public, and the studio undershot even that.

Since the movie failed on every level—story, acting, special effects—it’s hard to focus on one thing, but I guess I’ll point to the character Tonto, played

by Johnny Depp.

As my son said as we walked out of the theater, “I thought Johnny Depp could play pretty much anything he wanted to.”

This role showed that sometimes even Johnny Depp will just act for the money. He had to know that this was going to be a cultural hot-button role.

And yet, his, and most of the characters, were portrayed as though this were a remake of Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles— only re-imagined as a drama.

Couldn’t somebody have raised their hand during filming and said, “We’re really piling on the cultural stereotypes here”?

Not all older people suffer from dementia. Not all native people have magical spirituality that manifests in real life. Not all native spirituality is a sight gag. Not all insane people are wise. Not all native people are just white people with make-up.

Not all native people who communicate mainly with English speakers can’t speak in English.

Stereotypes are misconceptions that are perpetrated in popular culture. When characters in books or movies are unintentionally based on these misconceptions, it’s called bad writing. It’s not just bad writing for the groups misrepresented, it’s bad for all the people whose intelligence has just been insulted.

Man, what people won’t do for money.

Re “The death of senior services” (Feature story, June 27): The “Death of Senior Services” article in the RN&R’s June 27 edition is misleading.

First of all, Senior Services meals are certified by a registered dietician to provide one-third of the USDA recommended daily allowance for seniors. And, while it is true that Washoe County Senior Services, like all county departments, has lost revenue and staff from the Great Recession, we are serving 67 percent more people than were served in 2008 when the economic crisis began.

It is also true that several programs have been lost because of the federal sequester and future reductions are possible. We are working to find ways to continue all of senior services through options with other county departments and our community partners.

In fact, we hope to restore our Visiting Nurse Program in the near future.

We are looking for new strategies and funding for all of Senior Services programs, as the senior population is rapidly growing. The Senior Law Project will continue uninterrupted, thanks to Washoe Legal Services and Nevada Legal Services who have stepped in to help. As a result, we will be able to restore services for that program to 2007-2008 levels.

Although we expect cuts in the Nutrition Programs, we will focus the resources that we have on the Meals on Wheels program for home bound seniors. And our Senior Social Services and DayBreak Adult Day Health programs continue with new and innovative funding.

Eyewitness account Re “An age of wonders” (Editor’s note, July 3): I suggest you spend a few minutes and get some objective information about Muslims in Turkey. Christians, gays and Jews are murdered and women are gangraped in the name of Islam every day in Turkey. I just returned from a month in Thailand and love that country and its people. You missed another benefit to visiting Thailand, I lost 10 pounds. I ate only Thai food and drank lots of Thai beer.

Regulate food Re “A market solution to food problems” (The Liberty Belle, July 3): Chanelle Bessette suggests that privatization of food regulation is a better solution that government regulation. She offers the MPAA and ESRB as examples of effective privatization. She probably was born after the MPAA started. I seem to recall that the only reason they created a voluntary rating system was to stave off regulation from the government. The same is true with ESRB. If there was no possibility of government regulation, then these industries would have continued doing as little as possible regarding ratings. It is only because of the threat of government regulation that they voluntarily put together their systems. Her suggestion to abandon government control as an answer would result in an unregulated free-for-all. One only needs to look at the Bangladesh clothing industry to see the result of voluntary industry compliance.

The Rana Plaza disaster was not the only clothing factory where workers lost their lives due to the lack of effective regulation, it was only the most recent and most deadly.

Regulation is needed (in moderation) to keep honest those who have little regard for others.

That’s entertainment There have been a few incidents of animal cruelty in the media lately, and many more that never make the news. All this makes us editorialists at the Reno News & Review feel as though we should insert our two cents.

The biggest incident, one of alleged horse shocking at the 2013 Reno Rodeo, captured on a cell phone video on June 28, has engendered massive Facebook and other social media commentary. Frankly, while the video seems to speak for itself, showing a horse being shocked inhumanely, it is truly not prima facie evidence. There’s just not enough context to a onesecond video.

But do not let our hedging our accusations on that particular incident suggest that we think that rodeos are wholesome. Those animals, both adult and immature— like in the steer wrestling or calf roping “sports”—are there for inhumane purposes. Is there any doubt that these creatures are taken from familiar, if not comfortable, places, placed into situations with loud noises, bright lights, subjected to pain and fear, and then forced to perform for our amusement? As active, paying participants in rodeo, we know and accept this.

And by paying for this entertainment, we are colluding with those who profit from animal cruelty.

We’re not trying to incite passions. We’re just stating the obvious. So allow us to ask the question once more: Is there any doubt that these creatures are taken from familiar, if not comfortable, places, placed into situations with loud noises, bright lights, subjected to pain and fear, and then forced to perform for our amusement?

With lots of water. It doesn’t bother me.

I love it. I just moved here from Texas, so this is good. I don’t like the cold.

There’s only one answer to this: No, there is no doubt. As humanity has matured, our species has tried to become more humane. We forbid fights to the death among humans, and many traditional forms of cruel entertainment that featured people and animals have been banned. For example, the great Latin tradition of bullfighting has been banned in most of the world. So too, has cockfighting. Both these forms of entertainment have ancient roots, far older than the heritage of the Old West to which the modern rodeo supposedly hearkens. Even in the realm of rodeo, many sports have been declared too inhumane to allow, like horse tripping, for example.

This acceptance of cruelty for entertainment should be beneath us humans. But truly, it is the smallest symptom of a sickness in our culture. We routinely treat even our own companion animals with no more concern than houseplants, discarding them the moment they inconvenience us. We destroy the planet’s resources both for ourselves and our fellow occupants of this planet without consideration for either, and then deny we’re doing it. We watch as our fellow humans starve or fight or war like they’re on some reality show for our entertainment.

We don’t expect any real change to come out of this editorial any more than we expect prosecutions to come from the Reno Rodeo’s investigation of that alleged public horse torture incident—or any explanation of why the rodeo is investigating itself but law enforcement is not (Nevada Revised Statues chapter 574 – animal cruelty). But it’s probably better for society not to pretend that we’re not colluding by only watching. Ω |

Read ’em and weep As an idealistic 20-something, I joined the Peace Corps to “make a difference” but also to avoid a teaching job after earning a master’s degree in Spanish while simultaneously discovering I didn’t really want to teach a foreign language the rest of my life. by In its wisdom, the Peace Corps Sheila Leslie assigned me to serve as a nutritionist in the Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border, where I spent my days searching the sugar cane fields and banana plantations for malnourished children. Another health promoter and I would weigh the emaciated children on scales we lugged around and enroll the most malnourished in our center, where we’d feed them more beans than rice, give them boiled water to drink, and release them to their parents once they reached a less severe level of malnutrition.

While the program kept some children alive long enough to reach the magical age of 2, when the mortality rate dropped significantly, it didn’t save them all. Many who

did survive would endure lifelong consequences, including retardation and other health challenges.

I’ll never forget a conversation I had with some of the mothers in our center about the invisible bugs in the water they carried from a polluted river nearby that were making their children sick, giving them unstoppable diarrhea, robbing them of vital nutrients. I carefully explained why it was important to breastfeed whenever possible and avoid the expired baby formula flooding the Third World at the time because when they mixed the formula with contaminated water, the babies ingested bacteria that made them sick.

When I finished my minilecture, there was silence while they looked at each other, finally bursting out in laughter. One of them told me that only a gringa could concoct such a story.

Everyone knew American baby formula produced strong children, and this wild story of invisible bugs was just a cover-up so Americans

could keep all the formula for her own children.

That’s when I realized that while it’s important to feed hungry children and provide food security for poor families, the only cure for persistent poverty is to defy ignorance with education. Most of the Dominicans I worked with were functionally illiterate, having left school when they were old enough to work in the fields, and their views were shaped largely by what they heard on the radio or saw in the films that made the rounds of poor towns on movie night.

This experience resonated with me when I reviewed the 2013 Kids Count report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, which once again ranked Nevada 50th among the states in education and 48th overall in terms of child well-being.

It’s hard to argue with that ranking when we are last in the number of high school students not graduating (42 percent) and first in the percentage of 3- and 4-year-olds not enrolled in preschool (70 percent).

Nevada also ranks 50th for the number of children with no health insurance (16 percent).

Most news stories about the dismal report noted that we are improving our statistics, if not our last place ranking, a la “it’s a step in the right direction.” But when you’re dead last, there’s really no place else to go than up.

Instead of celebrating our 48th overall ranking (Mississippi and New Mexico ranked 49th and 50th), we should be asking our governor and Legislature why we continue to spend our tax dollars to subsidize business on the theory that we will improve education and health care for our citizens if there are more job opportunities.

A dubious job in a yet-to-emerge film industry won’t make up for the lack of education and health care today. We must invest in pre-school and fix our high school graduation rate first. Ω

More health regulation limits liberty Two weeks ago, Sen. Wendy Davis made national news with her filibuster for women’s health in the Texas capitol, wherein she spoke for 13 straight hours about abortion rights. The event led Gov. Rick Perry to call a special session for the Texas Legislature to further discuss the issue of abortion rights, by Chanelle Bessette essentially trying to toughen up the restrictions on timing—by reducing the week limit to 20—and clinic regulations.

While Roe v. Wade made abortion before the point of fetus viability— usually between 24-28 weeks—a constitutionally protected right for women, state abortion laws can be used to restrict the ease with which a woman can receive a procedure. For example, the Texas sonogram law requires that, at least 24 hours before her procedure, a woman seeking an abortion must see ultrasound images of her fetus and the heartbeat must be made audible. For many women, such requirements make a painful decision even more grueling.

In Nevada, we have a fairly progressive stance on abortion rights, particularly compared to Texas. According to the Guttmacher Institute, a study from 2008 estimated that 22 percent of total pregnancies in Nevada resulted in induced abortions. Of all unintended pregnancies in 2006, 45 percent resulted in live births and 42 percent resulted in induced abortions. According to the National Abortion Federation, “it is estimated that 35 percent of all women of reproductive age in America today will have had an abortion by the time they reach the age of 45.” Therefore, it would seem that Nevadan women are below estimated trends for the number of abortion recipients per capita.

As a libertarian, I am—predictably—a staunch supporter of limited government interference in the lives of private citizens, particularly where health is concerned. For the case of abortion in particular, I don’t think government interference would do anything but worsen the state of

women’s health. Government interference would increase the number of illegal and unsafe abortions that occur, and it would also increase the number of children who are born into households that cannot take care of them, putting overwhelming pressure on the social service sector of the government. In an ideal world, every conceived fetus would be intentional, and abortion wouldn’t be necessary. But the fact remains that accidents, ill preparedness, health concerns and rape are realities that women face, and they therefore must be in control of whatever consequences will affect their bodies, lives and futures.

Forty years after its passing, it’s hard to believe that Roe v. Wade still has opponents like Gov. Perry who are actively trying to break down the rights that women have to their own reproductive lives. While women in America have more freedoms in this arena than in many other parts of the world, there is still a threat to how those freedoms operate in politics.

There are many steps that can be taken in addition to legalized abortion to help women (and men!) have better control over their reproductive futures, like better sex education, access to birth control and availability of the Plan B pill—which, contrary to much anti-abortion activist rhetoric, does not cause miscarriage. If taken within several days of unprotected sex, the Plan B pill will prevent pregnancy from occurring in the first place. The age limit for Plan B, which was recently only for women over the age of 17, was recently lifted so that soon women under the age of 17 can also purchase it over the counter.

Reproductive freedoms are the key to gender equality, and allowing women to have the freedom to choose whether or not to be pregnant is an important factor in that equality. While every step to avoid unwanted pregnancy should be taken, abortion rights are still essential and need to be preserved. Ω

Officialdom tries to watch out for some groups, like senior citizens without air conditioning, by posting hints for dealing with heat.

they seldom provide unqualified, conclusive answers. Most of them will only go as far as the data takes them, and there is a surprising amount of information on Renoarea weather that is not in easily readable form or has not been analyzed to address some issues.

In an unusual development in Nevada, a new law will take effect in 11 weeks that will protect employees from employers.

Assembly Bill 181, sponsored by Washoe Assemblymember David Bobzien, makes it “unlawful for any employer in this State to ... require, request, suggest or cause any employee or prospective employee to submit a consumer credit report or other credit information as a condition of employment.”

It also protects workers from being penalized for keeping their employers out of their social media sites, making it “unlawful for any employer in this State to ... require, request, suggest or cause any employee or prospective employee to disclose the user name, password or any other information that provides access to his or her personal social media account.”

The new law also prohibits discipline against workers who avail themselves of the new law and makes any employer who circumvents the law liable to legal relief, such as “reinstatement or promotion of an employee, and the payment of lost wages and benefits.”

Nevada has a reputation for laws that heavily favor employers over workers.

Playing with fire For hours after the downtown fireworks display ended in Sparks on July 4, fireworks continued to explode in adjoining neighborhoods into July 5. No arrests were reported.

These were personal fireworks, which become more elaborate each year, beyond the sparklers and cherry bombs that once were common.

Some of those used this year, such as multi-shot, mortar-style devices, sent fiery charges 30 or 40 feet into the air.

The Sparks local code reads, “The possession, manufacture, storage, sale, handling and use of fireworks are prohibited.”

In Reno, the municipal code reads, “It is unlawful for any person to have, possess, Used fireworks remained in Sparks keep, store, handle, manufacstreets. Washoe County code: “No person may possess, discharge, set off or cause to be discharged in or into any portion of a county park any firecrackers, torpedoes, rockets, fireworks, explosives or other substance harmful to the life or safety of any person.”

There is no one-size-fits-all law on the matter. Each municipality has its own, and some of them are unusual. Nye County, for instance, has ordinances that seem to encourage the use of fireworks—in other counties. Under the law, purchase of fireworks is legal, but using them or keeping them in Nye County is not.

“You can purchase fireworks here and when you check out you have to sign a fireworks purchaser’s form that says you are not going to discharge them other than at a county-approved shooters site with a valid permit, and you are not going to lie when you fill out the form,” fireworks merchant Doug Burda told the Pahrump Valley Times last week. “You also agree that you will remove the fireworks from Nye County within 24 hours. Basically the customer understands that when they come here, they are going to get a good deal on fireworks, they can’t shoot them off here, and they have to get them out of here within 24 hours.”

In California, police closely watch the Nevada border. In the last two weeks of June, officers in San Bernardino County alone confiscated more than 12,000 illegal fireworks, some of them trucked in from Nevada.

What’s with this heat?

Reno has been getting hotter for 70 years “I know darn well that it’s hotter here than it was when we were kids.”

The comment came from one Dennis Myers of a group of mostly Renoites at a party in Verdi last month. After that comment, there was a murmur of agreement from those surrounding the speaker, most of whom grew up in Reno in the 1950s and 1960s. The occasional days of three-digit temperatures Reno has been seeing in recent weeks likely reinforces that opinion.

But such comments in more diverse groups will often result in disagreement, sometimes from those who deny climate change is happening.

“There is also the urbanization … an urban heat island in Reno.”

Nina Oakley Climatologist While there are fluctuations from year to year, there is indeed data that shows Reno has been getting steadily hotter since about the Second World War, though whether that fact says anything about the region’s climate is far from certain.

In the late 1940s and 1950s, there were only two years (1950 and 1958) when Reno’s average

annual temperature was above 50 degrees.

But since 1980, there were only two years (1982 and 1985) when Reno’s average annual temperature was below 50 degrees.

On a flow chart, there are fluctuations, but also a steady upward rise over seven decades.

So the data is there to show Reno is generally hotter now than it was. But data is always subject to interpretation. Is Reno hotter because the climate has changed at this point near the Sierra—or because Reno has become a larger urban area, what some people call an urban heat bubble? Such islands are caused by buildings preventing surface heat from dissipating into the night sky and a lack of evaporation and transpiration through plants, among other factors.

Western Regional Climate Center research climatologist Nina Oakley said, “There is also the urbanization, the effect of urbanization, an urban heat island in Reno. … How do you separate what’s happening in the atmosphere from what’s the effect of urban heat islands?”

In fact, she said, there are studies nearing completion to try to sort out which factor is having more impact on Reno, but that information won’t be available for a while. One of the frustrations of dealing with scientists is that

Whether the rise in Reno temperatures is something that is happening throughout the Great Basin is also still to be determined. There is data from numerous weather stations, but it has not been gathered together for this kind of use, and some stations do not lend themselves to such use. A station at Beowawe has been in place only since 1972, so comparing it to the much longer emplaced Reno station is less than fruitful. One Battle Mountain station stopped operating in 1945. As far as we have been able to tell, there is no table or list showing a statewide annual average temperature.

Non-scientists react to different kinds of information. Some may cherry-pick information to support what they want to believe. Others have an inclination to project a small amount of experience onto a broader field, their personal impressions—such as a couple of brutal summers in a row—leading them to sweeping conclusions.

Justin Broglio of the Desert Research Institute said, “We get the same question in the winter time during the snowfall. When there’s no snowfall at all, people call with the same kind of question. You know, ‘We’ve had two years of no snowfall.’” And they want to know whether that shows a trend.

Some climate experts challenge the whole notion of heat islands.

National Climatic Data Center scientist Thomas Peterson wrote in one study, “Additionally, as a [scientific] community, we need to update our understanding of urban heat islands, to realize that this phenomenon is more complex than widely believed by those not immersed in the field. We should not view all oddly warmer stations as indications of UHI. Some urban stations are indeed warmer than nearby rural stations but almost the same number are colder.”

It’s just one of the issues still to be settled about Reno’s climate.

To those suffering from the heat, it may not matter what the cause is.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, “The state with the highest average annual hyperthermia-related death rate during 1999—2003 was Arizona (1.7 deaths per 100,000 population), followed by Nevada (0.8) and Missouri (0.6).” Clark County is likely responsible for most of that ranking. Ω

Our state fish, the Lahontan cutthroat trout (LCT), is a threatened species that exists in native habitat in only two places: Independence Lake, 12 miles north of Truckee in the Northern Sierra, and Summit Lake in northwestern Nevada. by Sage Leehey The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) started a program to track the population of LCT in Independence Lake. sage l@ TNC sends out invitations to groups of Trout Unlimited in the area to come newsreview.c om fish the lake. When they catch a LCT, the USGS tag it and then release it back into the lake.

“What we do is send out invitations to people we know have experience catching fish,” said TNC’s Eastern Sierra Nevada program director Chris Fichtel. “With a fish like this that’s so rare, we want to be careful. We want to have people who really know how to fish and know how to handle a fish and do it carefully and not hurt them.”

TNC has a preserve of about 2,300 acres that surrounds the lake and had been working to prevent aquatic invasive species from being brought into it by providing new motorboats and kayaks for public use at the lake. These boats are now being used for this program.

TNC and USGS have brought fishermen to the lake for this program twice so far—last year and in June. Fichtel said they will be doing this again on July 20 and in late September.

“We have great fun,” Trout Unlimited member Bill Copren said. “And it’s interesting to see how they deal with the fish, how they measure them and the computer stuff with the tags. ... Before this, I had paid guides to take To see photos from me to Independence Lake. Fichtel said the population in Independence Lake is especially important because it exists on its own, although it has dropped down to numbers as low as 50 adult fish.

“It’s a native trout to this particular part of the Western United States,” Fichtel said. “This is part of the natural heritage, especially where you find places where they never disappeared from.”

One of the reasons this population information is so important is that tracking how many females there are allows the USGS to know about how many eggs are laid. And after tracking the number of young, they can figure out the success rate of reproduction, according to Fichtel.

“One of the problems the USGS found out about this population was a non-native fish was in there—well, there are three non-native fish, but only one has so far been a problem, and that’s the brook trout,” Fichtel said. “The Lahontan Cutthroat Trout in Independence Lake never had a predator other than bears and things like that—never a fish predator. When brook trout got introduced they would come into the stream, and they’re voracious predators.

They’ll eat the young of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout.”

Because of the problem with the brook trout, the USGS has been removing as many as they can catch each year from Independence Lake since 2005.

“Monitoring of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout has shown that since that program began—the brook trout control—the numbers of the Lahontans have gone way up,” Fichtel said. “And they’ve stayed fairly high. They’re getting better; they’re on the right trajectory.” Ω

round 8 p.m. on July 3, I strolled alongside the Truckee River in downtown Reno, on my way to interview a local robot. The sun was just setting, the kind of dusk that photographers and f ilmmakers call “the magic hour,” because of the diffused, hazy, almost surreal light. It was warm, but not painfully hot now that the sun was out of the way. The sky was slightly overcast, and the air was unusually humid for Northern Nevada. It being nice weather and the night before a holiday, there were a lot of people out and about. A reggae band was playing at Wingf ield Park, and the music drifted down the river alongside me as I headed east toward Reno City Plaza, the euphemistic name for the former site of the demolished Mapes Hotel.

When I got to the plaza, my interview subject, Hotshot Few Thousand, had yet to arrive.

Teenage skateboarders rolled around and around. A man was playing saxophone, and three teenage Mormon missionaries were watching him intently. I sat down near “Portal of Evolution,” the large steel butterfly sculpture in the plaza, and started thumbing through my phone, enjoying the weather, and occasionally glancing around to see if I could see Hotshot.

And then I saw him rolling up Virginia Street, his glowing electronic eyes visible from more than a block away. He was preceded by a wave of laughter and people shouting to their friends, “Hey, look at the robot!”

“They’re supposed to remake Short Circuit—did they already start it?” said a teenage skater near me, with a tone of indeterminate sarcasm.

Standing over 6 feet tall, rolling on three wheels, with his bright, expressive eyes and a head like a motorcycle helmet, Hotshot always attracts a crowd.

As he approached the plaza, people from all around rushed toward him and immediately started taking photos with their phones.

Some people seemed immediately attracted and excited by the robot,

others seemed confused, and a few seemed terrified.

I saw one teen girl make a frightened face and say, “I don’t do robots.”

As Hotshot approached, I heard Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five,” a classic, catchy, upbeat jazz tune, emerging somewhere from his body.

The sax player had stopped playing and, like everybody else, was staring at Hotshot. Hotshot’s face lit up—literally—when he saw the sax player.

“I’m going over to the saxophone player,” he said. His voice is a low, staccato monotone best described as robotic. Though, somewhat strangely, as a passerby pointed out later, he also sounds a bit like Cheech Marin.

There were probably 25 or 30 people around him—all ages, many of them grinning with delight.

There’s something innately funny about seeing a robot roll around, acting vaguely human.

Hotshot made his way through the crowd to the sax player. “Know any Brubeck?”

The sax player smiled and starting playing some light melodic stuff—not Brubeck, at least not that I recognized—but pleasant enough.

Hotshot started bobbing his head in time. The sax player played a few licks and then paused. Hotshot jumped right in: “Everybody tip the saxophone player bundles of money.”

The crowd erupted with laughter. Hotshot could say just about anything, and it would seem funny because he’s a robot, but he’s also genuinely quick-witted and—again, because he’s a robot—he’s able to say things that might otherwise seem inappropriate. He’s outgoing, boisterous and a notorious flirt.

“Nobody’s tipping the saxophone guy,” he said, taunting the crowd. “Somebody put some bread in his jar.”

The sax player started playing the sax riff from the Sandford and Sons theme song. Hotshot responded by playing the TV show version himself, much to the delight of the crowd. He kept demanding that somebody in the crowd tip the saxophone player.

Finally, somebody tried giving some money to Hotshot, placing a bill in his right “hand”: a pincerlike claw. (His left appendage has a canister for carrying things.)

Hotshot took the money and, with some effort, dropped it in the musician’s case.

Somebody in the crowd shouted to him, “Where did you come from?”

“The planet … Earth,” he responded, giving just enough of a pause after the word “planet” and a dramatic flair to the word “Earth” to maximize comic effect.

The day the Earth stood still He’s had a lot of practice perfecting the response to that question, which he routinely gets asked everywhere he goes. During the 45 minutes or so of our interview, he was asked some version of that question by a passerby at least a half dozen times.

Whenever people would ask that or follow-up questions like, “Who made you?” or “How do you work?”

Hotshot would be vague or evasive.

He seems to enjoys hearing people argue about how he works, and admittedly part of the fun of interacting with him is exploring that mystery, or, even better, eavesdropping on the wild speculation of other people: Is he an autonomous being forming his own original thoughts? Is he like the iPhone’s Siri, interacting with preprogrammed responses? Is there a tiny person hidden somewhere in his narrow frame? Or is there a guy sitting in a van a mile away controlling him with a PlayStation controller?

Hotshot is as much an achievement of art as of science or engineering. And good art raises more questions than answers. Art is about possibilities, not actualities.

Watching Hotshot interact with the crowd and the sax player, I started wondering how I’d get his attention, when he suddenly turned to me, addressed me by name, and said, “Nice to see you again.”

I was glad he remembered me.

We’d met a few times over the years. We’d met a couple of times outside bars around town—he sometimes shows up randomly at bars, museums or events. And we’d had a fairly long conversation one year at Burning Man. He’s a semi-regular

Burner, though he’s missed the last few years. He made his public debut at the arts festival in 2004.

We walked together over to the plaza, chitchatting about the weather.

Seeing me talk to him, a girl ran up to me.

“Is that real?” she asked me.

“Do you think you’re imagining it?” I replied.

She rubbed her eyes. “Nope, I’m not.”

“Yeah, except for that new album,” he said. “Boy, they really blew it. ... They’re poseurs big time, which is OK. It’s going good for them.”

Somebody in the crowd again asked him where he was from.

“I’m from the planet Earth,” he said. “It is blue.”

I asked about his travels.

“I’ve gone all over California,” he said. “New Orleans is pretty pimp. I’ve been to Burning Man a bunch of times. Holy crap, it’s crazy

“It is blue.”

“Do you eat food?” I asked him.

“I do not require sustenance like you human beings,” he said. “But if I did eat, I would eat beef because I hate cows. ... One of them looked at me wrong.”

“How’d you get here?” shouted a guy in the crowd. “Did you walk here?”

“No, I rolled here.”

A skater asked him if he wanted to borrow his board.

“I can’t get up on that thing, man.”

After a while, the conversation inevitably turned to music. Hotshot goes to a lot of festivals, including the Coachella music festival, which he attends every year. He mentioned Daft Punk, the French electronic music duo that dress in robot suits

out there. I’ve been to Germany.

They drink lots of beer. They get drunk. A smattering of other places.”

“But you live here in Reno, right?” I asked.

“Yeah, I live pretty much everywhere,” he said. “But I’ve been chilling in Reno for a while.”

“You like Reno?”

“Reno’s great,” he said. “It could be a hundred degrees, and then five minutes later, it’s hailing, and frozen water is falling from the sky. Some kind of Biblical things going here in Reno. I dated a slot machine too.”

“How’d that go?”

“She took all my money, and all I got was a hand shake.”

Again the crowd erupted in laughter. A guy shouted, “Now you know why they call them ‘slots’!”

“The loosest slots in town?” asked Hotshot.

“Yeah, they’re everywhere,” said the guy.

“Do you meet a lot of other robots?” I asked.

“No, I’m not doing so well with the robot scene.”

“What other robots have you met?”

“Is a parking meter considered a robot?”

“I was on American Idol,” he said. “I made it to the second round.

But the executive producer hated me, so they cut me out of the show.”

“What song did you do?”

“I did ‘Tainted Love’ by Soft Cell,” he said before launching into the song, singing in the some dry monotone he speaks with.

“Sometimes I feel like I could uh uh get away. I’ve got to uh uh.

They thought I was making fun of the show. I don’t know what their problem was. And then I went on America’s Got Talent in front of Howard Stern and Howie Mandel and that old bag what’s-her-name.”

“Sharon Osbourne?”

“Yeah, whatever.

Hotshot is massively entertaining one-on-one or in a small crowd.

But, his feisty, sarcastic personality hasn’t been able to transfer well to larger stages—where the magic and novelty of conversation with a robot is less palpable. I asked him about his bids for national fame over the years.

… I got booed off the stage in like two seconds. They were mean to me.”

“Why were they mean?”

“Well, I was making fun of the judges, and I was making fun of San Francisco. I don’t know why they were mean.”

“What did you say about Sharon Osbourne?” asked a girl to Hotshot’s left. In a sudden motion, he turned to look at her.

“Sharon Osbourne?” he asked.

“Why? Are you related to her? Are you Kelly Osbourne?”

The girl tried to protest that no she wasn’t Kelly Osbourne, but she was laughing too hard to get it out.

“So nice to meet you, Kelly,” said Hotshot. “Welcome to Reno. Let me know if you need anything, OK?” During his many adventures, Hotshot has actually met a long list of celebrities. He had a somber conversation with Bill Murray at Hunter S. Thompson’s funeral. He’s posed for pictures with Paris Hilton, Emma Watson and Danny Devito.

Actor Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad invited Hotshot to his wedding.

He sang “Don’t Stop Believin’” to Steve Perry at a party in Los Angeles. He flirted heavily with Rose McGowan. The Flaming Lips invited him onstage at a show in New Orleans. He’s met Vanessa Hudgens, Kate Bosworth, Alexander Skarsgard and many more.

Hotshot himself doesn’t talk much about his various celebrity encounters. He generally seems to act like he’s always the biggest celebrity in the room. But like any globe-trotting superstar, Hotshot has a human entourage of bodyguards, sycophants and groupies, like Chris Munz, Ben Ramirez and Darren Barnes, who were more forthcoming

about Hotshot’s history and exploits.

But despite his many brushes with fame, Hotshot remains something of a cult figure. It might be because he’s kind of a counterculture personality.

A few years ago, he briefly hosted a local public access show called Hotshot after Dusk, which was sometimes enthusiastically lowbrow.

He smokes cigarettes and goes to art and music festivals, where he spends much of his time hitting on attractive humans. He has a 14-inch mechanical penis—which he refers to as a kickstand—that makes lightsaber sounds when it moves. His flirtatious attitude has occasionally gotten him roughed up by jealous boyfriends.

I wandered away from Hotshot to chat with RN&R photographer Allison Young, who had arrived during the interview to take photos.

Hotshot continued to work the crowd, telling jokes, playing music, asking questions.

“Anybody going to eat Awful Awful tonight?” I heard him say. “Do it. Go for two of those things. It’s hard to finish the fries though.”

“I thought you said you didn’t eat!” I said.

“I’m just playing it to the crowd, man,” he said. Everybody laughed.

“Anybody want to grab a beer?”

The crowd at this point was mostly teenagers.

“You know you’re talking to a bunch of kids?” I asked.

Hotshot seemed to recoil in

surprise and looked around at the crowd again.

“Are you children?” he asked.

They all smiled and nodded, transfixed.

Seeing that I wasn’t afraid to talk to him, a teenage girl asked me, “I really want to know if he can sing.

Can you ask him if he can sing?”

“He was singing earlier,” I said.

“Tell him to sing a song.”

I turned to Hotshot. “We’ve got a girl over here who wants you to sing.”

Mortified, the girl started to run away.

“She’s running away, but she wants you to sing. She’s running that way.”

Hotshot wheeled around and started rolling after her. “Where are you going?” he called out to her, but she was already on the other side of the plaza. Upon seeing Hotshot suddenly start to move, a guy nearby fell off his skateboard.

“You sound like Cheech …” said another passerby, struggling to remember the comedian’s last name.

“Cheech or Chong?” asked Hotshot. “Like Cheech had sex with Chong?”

“And had a robot baby?” I offered.

“It is quite the concept,” said Hotshot.

Another guy asked me if I built Hotshot.

“No,” I said.

“Who built it?”

“You should ask him.”

Rather than ask, the guy jumped to his own conclusion: “Robots are starting to build themselves!”

After accidentally chasing away the girl who wanted to hear him sing, Hotshot spent some time just rolling around the plaza among the skateboarders. He started giving people hugs, including the girl he’d mistakenly identified as Kelly Osbourne.

“You’re so sweet, Kelly,” he said to her.

I realized I got a certain thrill from watching Hotshot. I couldn’t help but laugh whenever I was talking with him, and just seeing him roll around in circles, playing music and making goofy noises put a smile on my face. It was like watching a big mechanical puppy.

“I kind of want a hug, too,” I said to him. “Is that weird?”

He gave me a hug, and before too long, he was on his way, rolling back down Virginia Street. After he had left, I noticed a few other people lingering in the plaza, with the same gleeful expressions on their faces that I felt on mine, including the three young missionaries that had been watching the sax player when I’d arrived to the plaza.

“What’d you guys think?” I asked them.

All three, in perfect, grinning unison said, “That was awesome.” Ω

to describe the four-day, spectacular of the senses that is the annual High Sierra Music Festival? It seems a bit like trying to condense the Odyssey into a single, pithy haiku. Even with photos to illustrate, any attempt would fall far, far short.

Of course there’s the music. Just the headliners for 2013, Robert Plant, Primus, Thievery Corporation, and moe., were enough to make many fans giddy. Add in

another 50 or so acts like Allen Stone, California Honeydrops, and Reno’s own Jelly Bread, and you had a dance party just waiting for the dancers.

But a music festival is all about the people who attend. By that measure, High Sierra is very much a family reunion, but some kin have yet to meet. Mix the music and people in the beautiful decorated venue of the Plumas County Fairgrounds and magic happens.

It may sound like the beginning of a by joke, but it’s actually the set-up for the Jessica Santina thought-provoking, Tony Award-winning play Art, by French playwright Yasmina Reza, on stage this month at Brüka Theatre.

Though the painting is no joke to the man who bought it, one of the many questions that remains throughout the play is, “Is the joke on him, or everyone else?”

Serge’s love for the painting. To his eyes, this thing is nothing but a couple of white lines painted across white canvas. And when he learns what Serge has paid for this “masterpiece,” he is stricken by sticker shock. How can someone he has cared about and respected actually like such a painting, or pay such a price for it? And if Serge is really that kind of man, what does that say about their friendship, the value Marc has placed on it and, by association, Marc himself?

As Marc struggles with these questions, and Serge works to overcome his strong need to be validated and have his friends like the painting, the two men rope in poor Ivan (Marvin Gonzalez), their hapless, waffling third musketeer. More interested in retaining friendships than speaking his mind, Ivan says what he thinks his friends want to hear about the painting, and hesitates to express his own confusion.

What I love about this play, which is sparsely plotted, scripted, set and cast, are the provocative questions it asks: What is art? How should it be valued? If it moves

you, is that enough for it to be considered art? Can a painting that appears to be nothing actually move you at all? Can you put a “fair value” on taste? What is friendship, and can you be friends with someone whose taste you truly despise? What brings friends together, if not shared tastes or values?

Why are these men even friends?

Like another of Reza’s commercially successful plays, The God of Carnage, Art features tersely scripted moments between people who are, by turns, completely relatable and horribly unsympathetic. They engage in constant wordplay, yet so much goes unsaid. Like the 2-foot-by-4-foot white “masterpiece,” they leave the blanks to be

filled in by the audience’s imagination. Even the Brüka staging—minimalist and sleek, cold like the characters themselves— seems to imply that these men have few soft edges or warmth between them.

Critical to making this show work is strong acting, and this Brüka production certainly has it. As Marc, whose blackand-white engineer’s mind disdains the pretentious use of words like “deconstruction,” Allen is marvelously condescending. He sighs, rubs his head and even stands with contempt. Gonzalez’s Ivan is rumpled and pathetic, but when, in the second act, he enters Serge’s apartment and breathlessly expounds on the reason for his late arrival, the energy and ire he maintains make him a joy to watch.

There were moments throughout the show that felt slow, too quiet, and the final scene seems to unravel a bit. The script seems to want tightening there. But overall, I love what the play makes me think about.

And I certainly will never look at a white canvas the same way again. Ω

as the next person, but bikers and NASCAR fans are not usually my kind of crowd. When I walked in, I realized that Blitz caters to all kinds of crowds because the place was filled with blue-collar workers, guys in suits, bikers and even a baby.

Inside is large and dark with a bar and tall tables off to the side.

In the back, there’s a pool table and darts. Overall, the place is a lot cleaner than I was expecting.

Yeah, yeah, I’m a snob who judges places based on appearance alone. We took a seat at the bar and started off with some Ickys ($3). The choices of beers on tap ranged from PBR to Anderson Valley. Casey and I were getting a bit of the stink eye from some guys who appeared to be regulars, until I ordered us a couple of Jaeger bombs ($6), at which point we were celebrated and basically made members of the tribe. As I’ve always suspected, Jaeger really is the key to making friends.

During our time at Blitz, there were two staff members working, a man and a woman. I didn’t catch the guy’s name, but I certainly caught the female’s name—Trish, or “Effin Trish” as I like to call her because this gal had a mouth that would make a sailor blush.

When we asked what she would recommend, basically every description had a few F-bombs thrown in. Not in an unfriendly manner, mind you, that’s just the way she talks, and I liked it. The menu offers basic bar food with lots of burgers and sandwiches to choose from. They also offer daily specials Monday through Friday.

On Trish’s recommendation, we ordered the chicken bacon avocado sandwich ($8.69), which Trish assured us was “really fucking good.” We also went with the Philly Cheesesteak ($8.99). The plates quickly arrived with gigantic sandwiches and a large serving of fries on each. The chicken bacon avocado sandwich was the favorite with tons of avocado and bacon atop a large grilled chicken breast.

The sandwich came on a French roll that was soft and managed to hold all the ingredients together.

The Philly Cheesesteak was good, but the meat was a little dry. The addition of red and green peppers plus onions helped to liven it up though. I was also happy to see Jack cheese on this versus that awful bright orange fake shit.

Look at that, Trish is rubbing off on me! We probably ate about half our sandwiches and were more than full.

Blitz was having some sort of biker night, which seemed to have a large following. We ended up taking off pretty quickly after our meals as the place was starting to fill up. Despite the place’s rough exterior and some intimidating patrons, we had a decent meal and a cold beer at a good price. Trish cracked us up throughout the experience, so who knows, if I get a hankering for biker night, I might just come back. Ω

The lowest Depp The Lone Ranger At one point during it’s journey to the screen, Disney halted production on The Lone Ranger because it was costing too much and they weren’t sure a Western-themed summer tent pole movie was a good idea. Then, they caved into the likes of Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski, producing it for a reported $225 million.

This will now go down as a huge, massive, by hilarious, unthinkable, crazy, job-killing blunder.

Johnny Depp allowing himself to appear onscreen as Tonto, with his face painted to mask the fact he isn’t Native American, is a travesty. His movies have been mediocre at best lately, but this goes beyond the likes of The Tourist when it comes to poor career choices.

Flower Power in the Black Rock Desert - High Rock Canyon The diverse habitats in the Black Rock Desert High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area (NCA) support hundreds of species of wildflowers. Many are attention-grabbing and dazzling, with large blossoms and stunning colors, while others reward only the most observant eyes.

Generally, wildflowers are most abundant at lower elevations early in the season, and are abundant right now at higher elevations.

Every spring, some part of the Black Rock Desert NCA puts on a colorful wildflower show. Generally, wildflowers emerge in April and continue blooming into August, but this varies with annual rainfall and elevation.

This year, the rainfall has been good and flowers abound.

One of the best places to view wildflowers is in the low sagebrush plant communities near Stevens Camp during late May and early June. There is always something blooming here, including brilliant yellow buckwheat, blue lupine and white bitterroot.

Although not as dependable, in wet years the barren hills surrounding the Black Rock Desert Playa are awash in the vibrant colors of bee plant, Indian paintbrush, and yellow daisies.

Visitors to the hot springs at Soldier Meadows should be on the lookout for basalt cinquefoil, a low-growing herb with bright yellow five-petalled flowers that grows in the moist, alkaline soil near hot springs. This is the only place in Nevada where the basalt cinquefoil is found, so take care enjoy their charm without damaging them or their habitat.

From Reno: Take I-8- East to 447 North to Gerlach, take Highway 38 North and continue towards Vya. The scenery is majestic and the flora speaks poetic verse. Artists come to paint and photograph these vast scenic by-ways and it’s something not to be missed. Ensure your tires are in great shape and enjoy!

The movie is some sort of odd parody of The Lone Ranger, or at least it comes off that way, with strange comedic undertones and clichés exaggerated to the point of intolerability. Remember how the comedy Back to the Future: Part III paid homage to the West by exaggerating it in a semi-funny way? The Lone Ranger makes Back to the Future: Part III seem authentic in comparison.

How bad is it? The framing device for this movie has a very old Tonto telling some kid dressed as the Lone Ranger the story of his meeting the masked man and their travels together.

Tonto, looking like anything but a human being in tragic old age makeup, is making a living posing as a Native American in a museum exhibit, right next to a grizzly bear.

Depp and Verbinski (Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean partner in crime) choose to play this depressing storytelling angles for laughs, with Depp mugging more than a heavily armed homeless guy in the Manhattan subway. Depp wears a dead crow on his head throughout the film, with his face covered in war paint in the flashbacks.

He takes some sort of odd, Buster Keaton physical approach to the role that makes him look desperate, lost, and straining for the laughs that

don’t come. His line deliveries are stilted and unimaginative.

It represents a career low for a guy capable of great things. It’s a bad career move reminiscent of such travesties as John Travolta in Battlefield Earth, Louis Gosset Jr. in Enemy Mine and Sylvester Stallone in Judge Dredd. It’s a choice that will haunt him for the rest of his career.

As for the Lone Ranger himself, Armie Hammer doesn’t seem to know what movie he is in. He sports an inconsistent Western movie accent, and plays the virtuous John Reid as a stooge to Tonto’s voice of reason. He is, in no way, prepared to handle a role of this magnitude.

As the title character, he makes no impression, and is second fiddle to the top-billed, masquerading Depp.

Depp and Hammer aren’t even close to being the worst things about this movie. William Fichtner, an actor I usually enjoy, is unwatchable as bad guy Butch Cavendish, a scarred, goldtoothed monster who eats the heart of the Lone Ranger’s brother. This is in direct contrast to the comedic, goofy nature of the rest of the film.

OK, you are going for something dark with Cavendish, but watching him wipe the blood off a still beating heart from his lips is a bit much.

It’s the sort of thing that leaves you too aghast to laugh the next time Depp makes one of his stupid funny faces. In my head, when Depp mugged shortly thereafter, I was thinking “Yeah, well, I just saw a man die in a fashion that made that moment where the priest pulled a heart out of somebody in the Indiana Jones movie look like Mary Poppins. Laughter isn’t coming from me for a while, Johnny. Sorry.”

Everything in this movie is taken too far, from the dirt makeup, to the crazy beards and chops, to the caricature accents. Even the sound of a kid eating a peanut is turned up to an extent that becomes gut churning and abrasive.

I often complain about PG-13 horror movies that should just go for the R and turn up the dread and gore factor. Well, I get even more annoyed by PG-13 movies marketed to kids and families that contain the kind of violence on display in this crap. Heart eating, horse trampling, multiple gunshots, stabbings, and the threat of sticking a duck foot up somebody’s ass should not be on the viewing agenda for the entire family.

Disney is going to take a major bath on this one. And, as for the summer, it’s another major blockbuster disappointment after misfires like Man of Steel, World War Z, The Hangover Part III and After Earth. This is officially turning into a summer of wasteful, total trash movies.

I was truly embarrassed for Depp watching The Lone Ranger. The mere idea that what he was putting up on the screen is entertaining or useful in any way seems ludicrous. Remember before Jack Sparrow, when he was a boutique move star, an actor who chose interesting and scintillating projects like Cry Baby and Ed Wood? Ω

Man of Steel

This franchise could’ve ended about five films ago, and I would’ve been fine with that. Vin Diesel mumbles his way through another fast car movie, this one with some admittedly fine driving stunts. The plot involves some nonsense about Vin and his crew (including Paul Walker) going after some other bad guy driver who’s threatening the world. He also has Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) working for him, even though she blew up in a prior movie. Dwayne Johnson is in there, too, as a badass lawman, and future installments will involve another one of my least favorite action stars if the post-credit footage is any indicator. I like to watch good pyrotechnics, but I hate it when just about everybody in these films opens their mouths.

It looks like these movies will never end, and Michelle Rodriguez will never die.

Sandra Bullock might get top billing, and she’s pretty funny in the latest from Bridesmaids director Paul Feig, but, and there’s no doubt about it, this is Melissa McCarthy’s movie. McCarthy plays a vulgar Boston police detective whose world is turned upside down when an FBI Agent (Bullock) starts sniffing around her precinct and meddling in her cases. McCarthy and Bullock are good together, with Bullock taking the obvious, tightly wound route while McCarthy just unloads expletive after expletive. McCarthy is so natural when she delivers put downs in this movie, it’s a wonder she gets along with anybody in real life. The movie does succumb to some of those buddy cop film clichés, and it sags a bit in the middle, but when it’s on, it’s really on.

I got a few good laugh-out-loud moments, a lot of chuckles, and a lot of smiles out of this silliness. Considering some of the big budget garbage coming your way this summer, McCarthy and Bullock provide one of the season’s more pleasant movie experiences.

Director Zack Snyder and co-producer Christopher Nolan reboot Superman, and the result is a little disappointing.

Henry Cavill puts on the tights—minus the red underwear—and does little else, giving us the dullest Superman to date. The whole endeavor is an effort to take Superman to darker Batman-like territories, and that’s a big mistake. Superman can be in a dark flick, but he must rise above the darkness, not whine about his mom all of the time. There’s a lot of whiz-bang in this film, and some of it is impressive, but lots of it is just noise and things smacking into one another. Michael Shannon provides a terrific villain in Zod, while Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner do well as Superman’s two dads. I just couldn’t get into the depiction of Superman as a joyless, humorless stud. As for Amy Adams as Lois Lane, she isn’t given much of anything to do. This is going to make tons of money, and Snyder is lined up for a sequel already. I hope he gets it right the next time.

Much Ado About Nothing

The Bard gets a stripped-down treatment from one of the most unlikely of candidates: Joss Whedon, recent maker of massively expensive geek extravaganzas.

The man who gave us The Avengers got his buddies together at his house to shoot a rather reputable and very pleasant blackand-white take on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, just to show us that things don’t have to explode all of the time in his cinematic forays. The result is intimate, funny and even unique for a play that’s been adapted many times. The film was shot in less than two weeks, an extension of parties Whedon hosted with friends and colleagues that featured Shakespeare readings. Consequently, it has the look of a quaint dinner party, with women in sundresses and men in tailored suits. It’s a breezy experiment that works for most of its running time. Having impressed Whedon at one of his shindigs, Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof are awarded the plum parts of Beatrice and Benedick, the reluctant lovers who fall for each other in the most whimsical of ways.

This Is the End

For those of you hankering for another magician movie after The Incredible Burt Wonderstone … here it is! A Vegas magician act called the Four Horseman (Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco) concludes their show by seemingly robbing a bank in France through teleportation. An FBI agent (Mark Ruffalo) and an Interpol detective (Melanie Laurent) investigate, and we snore. Morgan Freeman is on hand as a man who makes a living debunking magic, as is Michael Caine as a millionaire bankrolling the Horseman. It all amounts to nonsense, with a lot of swirling cameras and stupid fights involving playing cards and paper cuts. The big reveals are silly, and much of what happens on the magic side is never explained. Eisenberg delivers one of the year’s more annoying performances.

Seth Rogen and writing partner Evan Goldberg make a strong directorial debut with this crazed stoner comedy in which Rogen and a bunch of his pals play themselves as the world faces the biblical apocalypse. When Jay Baruchel comes to LA to hang with Rogen, he finds himself reluctantly attending a party at James Franco’s new house. The Rapture happens, the ground opens up, and a bunch of celebrities go to Hell, leaving Rogen, Franco, Baruchel, Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill and Danny McBride to fight for the leftover Milky Way candy bar.

All of the participants are in top form, with the laughs never slowing down. The movie is also a pretty good horror film in its own right, with lots of gore for those of you who like that sort of thing. Among the oddities are Michael Cera as a coke-snorting pervert, Hill getting possessed after a romantic evening with Satan, and Danny McBride eating people. The film is as crazy as anything to come out of mainstream Hollywood in a long time, and a welcomed return to form for Rogen and Franco.

White House Down

Director Roland Emmerich has made watchable, fun trash before (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012). He’s the new Irwin Allen (producer of The Towering Inferno), and I often get a kick out of his silly disaster movies. This one, starring Channing Tatum as a lawman who happens to be touring the White House when terrorists take over, is a complete bust. It’s too stupid to be fun, and it doesn’t offer enough cool special effects devastation to offset the moronic storytelling. (The Capitol getting destroyed is the only memorable moment of carnage.) Jamie Foxx plays the President, an Obama clone, taken hostage in a homeland terrorist scheme that’s beyond impossible. Throw in a precocious daughter (Joey King) and James Woods doing his James Woods routine and you have a movie full to the brim with useless clichés.

Tatum, so much fun in 21 Jump Street, is left stranded in a movie that couldn’t be dumber if it tried, and Emmerich has given us one of the summer’s worst movies and likely biggest bombs.

World War Z

With this, we get two-thirds of a decent movie. The movie has a helluva start, and an even better middle, making it seem like it’s going to deliver the big summer goods. Then, in its final act, it totally craps out. Too bad, because I was looking to Brad Pitt’s zombie movie as relief from the mediocre big budget blockbusters we’ve gotten this summer (with the blessed exceptions of Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness).

The much troubled production shows every one of its scars, especially in its bungled, positively ridiculous finale. The opening sequence in Philadelphia is a winner, and the zombies attacking Israel and going nuts on an airplane score good thrills. The movie doesn’t know where it’s going in the end, and it just sort of putters out. Pitt gives it his best, but the movie seems afraid of itself. A zombie movie with no blood and no ending does not a good blockbuster make.

Veterans PostWar In an instrument-filled living room off of Plumb Lane, three musicians have found a safe haven to democratically rock by Austin Wallis hard. When Suta Bogale and Preston Duhon left their last band, Walk of Shame, in 2012 they still wanted to create music together but with more creative freedom.

“I basically kept hollerin’ into Suta’s ear about how we should keep playing together, and we hoped that Asa [Dakin] would be our bassist,” says Duhon. “He was our number one draft pick.”

over 10 years, and their catalog of past bands is historic. They come from the likes of Cranium, Keyser Soze, Knowledge Lives Forever, Walk of Shame and many more.

Now, after so many bands, some dysfunctional, some structured, some playful and some serious, they have come together at a sweet spot in their musical careers.

“My goal now is to create the best art possible with the people I play with,” says Bogale.

This ethic of both fun and creativity translates into PostWar’s music. Their chemistry is charismatic. Through easy smiles and concentrated faces, you can tell they are proud of the art they create. In his past bands, Bogale identified as a bassist, but in PostWar he sings, plays guitar and keyboards, while Duhon thrashes hard on the drums.

“I had a few bass lines in my head when we started, but when we got together with Asa, something entirely different and rad came out,” says Bogale.

With his beautiful handmade wooden bass and impressive musicianship, Dakin balances the trio with a legitimate sense of harmony and groove.

They are currently working on their set list of about six to 10 songs, and while their creative process is a little slow, they are fine with that method.

“When you’re working in a democratic band society like this one, we all take a little more time to work on a song because we’re working together,” says Dakin. “It’s more fun and organic this way. We actually listen to each other.” For this group, it isn’t about pounding out song after song.

“We are all at a point in our lives where we don’t necessarily want to be rock stars,” says Duhon.

“I mean, a one-hit wonder to live off of for the rest of our lives would be pretty nice.”

“But we are really just in it to rock,” says Dakin. “If winning comes to us by playing what we love, then that’s awesome, but we’re mostly just in it for the fun.”

They might claim that rock stardom isn’t the goal, but with a sound that is as accessible as it is raw, PostWar deserves fame and glory. Ω

After Reno worked its biggest little city magic, a few mutual friends connected them to Asa, formerly of avant metal core band Cranium, among other groups, and the trio began to rock.

“We vibed instantly,” says Duhon. “That was really important to us, to have a band that we could have fun with. We wanted a safe place to do whatever we wanted creatively.”

Although they won’t admit it, PostWar is more than just your fancy free indie rock garage band.

Each bandmate brings a lifetime of musical experience to the group making their sound refreshingly polished. PostWar has been described as indie-rock with postpunk tendencies, but nowadays, what does that even mean? They produce an aggressive loudness that pays homage to the crew’s collective time spent in metal, hardcore and rock bands. Their sound is one you can trust to build you up before it crashes down.

Superhero Crawl

BEHIND THE MASK

This weekend is your chance to don a mask and assume your favorite superhero or supervillain alter ego at the Superhero Crawl. The seventh annual pub crawl features 25 participating bars and nightclubs offering drink specials, costume contests and general merriment. Participants must be age 21 or older and wear a costume—whether a hero, villain or some being with a superpower. The cost is $5 for a commemorative cup and map, which you can purchase at Junkee Clothing Exchange, 960 S. Virginia St. The crawl kicks off at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 13, at Biggest Little City Club, 188 California Ave. Those who aren’t of legal drinking age will get a chance to join in the fun this year. Prepub crawl events include the Arch Rivals: Heroes vs. Villains 5K Fun Run through downtown Reno. The fun run begins at 9 a.m. and is open to runners of all ages. Dirt Live Off-Road Expo/ Eldorado Reno 500

Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival

In last week’s issue, we goofed and forgot to include the dates of these two events. The Dirt Live Off-Road Expo, which kicked off on Wednesday, July 10, in downtown Reno, features product and vehicle demonstrations, live music, contests, exhibits and seminars in anticipation of the Eldorado Reno 500 off-road race. Race officials will perform technical inspection on trucks, buggies and motorcycles prior to their competition on Friday, July 12, in downtown Reno along Virginia Street. The Eldorado Reno 500 will take place on Saturday, July 13, at the Tahoe-Reno Motorplex, 420 USA Parkway, Exit 32, in McCarran, east of Sparks on Interstate 80. Visit http://dirtlive.com.

The 41st annual festival kicks off on Saturday, July 12, with its production of William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Performances take place Tuesday through Sunday until Aug. 25. On Monday evenings, the festival will feature a variety of entertainment starting on July 15 with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra’s “Broadway on the Beach” program. Tickets range from $15-$95. Cleanup in aisle home I’ve been seeing my boyfriend for 10 months and living with him and his 12-year-old daughter for half that time. He broke up with his daughter’s mother after she became addicted to coke and then meth. She’s been in and out of jail and has a massive number of possessions, loads of which are still here: furniture, little picture frames, jewelry boxes full of random junk (earrings, magazine clippings, makeup, little figurines, candy wrappers). She claims to live in a tiny apartment, won’t divulge where, and refuses to take a single box. She freaks out at the mention of getting rid of her dumb garden gnomes (which she stole while high). If my boyfriend tried to make her take her things, she’d have a huge meltdown, putting their daughter in the middle. I’d put everything in storage, but we don’t have the extra money. I hate living among her things, but I love him so much that I don’t seem to have a choice.

It’s no small thing, having to wake up every day in some other woman’s two-bedroom junk drawer. But like many women, you seem to prioritize your relationship over your feelings and well-being. There are compromises to be made in any romantic partnership, but being gnawingly miserable in order to be happy doesn’t end well, assuming you weren’t looking to live resentfully ever after. Healthy compromise involves expressing your feelings and together figuring out solutions that work for both of you.

There is a way to turn this situation positive. Use this as your training ground for developing healthier conflict resolution. To bring up how you’re feeling, open with the good stuff—how much you appreciate him and your life together—and then tell him that you’re unhappy living in a house that constantly reminds you of his ex. Let him know that you understand his concern for protecting his daughter, but that the solution isn’t submitting to emotional blackmail; it’s talking to his daughter in advance about what you’re doing and why and maybe scheduling a sleepaway for her on the day the trash hits the fan (or, more prudently, the storage unit).

Tempting as it must be to “store” his ex’s things in a landfill, it’s safest to proceed with the expectation that she’ll sue him for that. As for your not having the “extra” money for storage, tending to your feelings, as well as your boyfriend’s, may mean that you both go without lattes or do odd jobs so you stop living as a second-class citizen to two stolen garden gnomes, 17 partially filled shampoo bottles, and all the rest.

temporarily holding someone else’s property without benefit or compensation. He suggests that your boyfriend send several emails and texts and leave phone messages telling the ex that she pick up her possessions from the storage facility “within a reasonable amount of time.” (What that would be varies by jurisdiction.) I suggest that you also photograph her stuff and document all the steps you take.

According to Strahilevitz, your boyfriend would be wise to hang on to small valuables, like photos and fine jewelry, which aren’t a menace to store. But, he says, “donating or disposing of the furniture and junk after a few months in which emails and calls … asking her to remove the property were ignored probably would not constitute gross negligence,” a scary legal term that merely describes being really careless with someone’s property.

When bald things happen to good people I’m a decent-looking guy with unfortunate hair. It’s thinning rapidly and receding to the back of my skull, and topical treatments barely made a difference. I’m now thinking of shaving my whole head, but I’m wondering what women think. Considering my circumstances, what’s my best option?

Going bald isn’t all bad. If you’re like a lot of men, every time you lose a hair off your head, you’re a hair closer to growing a ponytail out your nose. Although women generally prefer men with hair on their head, there’s a line that gets crossed, and that’s when there’s a desperate little patch on top, a la Prince William, that calls to mind a pointless attempt to grow a vegetable garden in arid countryside.

Doing that doesn’t make you look like you have hair; it makes you look like you have hair issues. Shaving your head, on the other hand, projects confidence, suggesting that you’re comfortable enough with your face and yourself to put them out there unadorned. If you go the headshaving route, consider adding facial hair to make it look like there’s still a little lawn on the property, balancing out the clearing on top. You could try a few styles, take pics, and poll the ladies. Who knows? It might be just the way to meet a woman who longs to run her fingers through your back hair. Ω

Crawl man Ed Adkins Ed Adkins is the organizer of five Reno bar crawls. The Superhero Crawl is this Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and he has added the Arch Rivals 5K Race at 9 a.m. this year, too.

So you organize bar crawls?

A bunch. I do the Zombie Crawl, the Superhero Crawl which is coming up. We just started a Leprechaun Crawl last St. Patrick’s Day. And then I do a Valentine’s Vampire Crawl, and then I just took over the Pirate Crawl. I’ve been adding these 5Ks this year. The first one is going to be the day of the Superhero Crawl, but we’re going to add another one to the Zombie and to the one in February when we do the Valentine’s Vampire. This year we’re going to change it to the Valentine’s Pajama Crawl.

How did you start doing this?

My birthday is in October, and I like to celebrate it. I had been thinking that I really wanted to do a bar crawl with my friends, and then I saw that Halloween was going to be on a Friday [in 2008].

And I was like, “Oh man. We should do a Halloween-themed bar crawl.” And I love zombies, so I just was like Zombie Crawl … and we had 200 people show up. ...

People really enjoyed it.

basically just scrape together everything I can, and it works out. I mean, there have been years where it’s come down to the wire where we almost didn’t get cups because it was down to the last hour that we could order them, and I had no idea how to pay for it. I’ve done a lot of pacing, and I’ve lost a lot of hair. But it has always worked out so far.

We’ve got consistent support from Junkee because they’re incredible people, and they’re super supportive of their community. I would not be where I am without Jessica and Troy Schneider....But sponsorships outside of that, I never really have time to go for them. The sponsorships I’ve had in the past mostly came to me, but it’s got to match the folks that come to the crawls. ... You have to really focus on building community and losing money if you want to do this stuff. Someday I hope to have enough time to work with sponsors, but if you let a sponsor dictate what you’re doing, then you work for them, and I try to do this for the people who are coming out. I come out for these crawls. I party at these crawls. I have a blast. And so I’m here thinking about what would make me happy and how would I have fun, and most sponsors who approach you don’t.

Some of them can be anti-throwing-agood-party, so I’d much rather not get their money and focus on throwing a good party. Ω

So are the 5Ks to draw in more people?

We wanted more opportunity to showcase how quirky and fun Reno is. These events work because of the people. It’s because we have a really unique culture here. People love to get goofy here, and we’re not pretentious. It’s really easy for people to put on something funny and go out and have a blast. ... The crawls are something that people who really enjoy the nightlife get involved in, but for the under 21 crowd and for the folks that don’t focus so much on nightlife, we were like, what else can we do? ... So I thought we should try it [5K runs] out. I asked around, and the response I love because it’s emotional. Everybody just immediately goes, “Yes!”

Where does the funding for all this come from?

Um, me? They’ve evolved, so we’ve tried to put it back into what we’re doing. I

Good news for us old geezers who have a soft spot for various nostalgias. You know, stuff like scarfing hot dogs on the Fourth of July (although I’m sure you, like me, have upped the ante in terms of the quality of tubular food stuffs you stuff in your doghole these days. I mean, as kids we sure as hell didn’t have the option of rolling with chicken pesto apple mango marshmallow brats on the Fourth. Anyway, the nostalgic news is that one recent day, I was at a supermarket checkout line, and there amongst the usual array of trash, slime and crap (a.k.a. Kardashian updates) was a Mad magazine. Mad! I hadn’t seen one in years and had assumed that it was long gone, consigned to a much deserved hallowed OPINION

spot in the humor pantheon of the past. But no, there was our old pal Alfred E. Newman, in classic form, sitting atop a perfect sendup of the multi-sworded chair of the King on Game of Thrones, which of course for Mad became a toilet backed by lots of medieval plungers and stuff, and of course Alfred has his royal pants around his ankles as he grins his timeless toothless grin in his timelessly vapid yet all-knowing way. I simply had to buy it, and I’m delighted to report that it was pretty damn funny. Yes, the great Mad masters of the past that us boomoids grew up with (Don Martin and Mort Drucker, for example) are dead and gone, but man, there are a lot of new, young, funny, talented sickos out there on the fruity plain to take their place. The writing and artwork on the lampoon of GOT was spot on and beautifully done, featuring a slew of terrific caricatures, plus loads of other cool stuff ripping the heck out of modern nonsense, just as you would expect

And amazingly enough, Barack Obama as Alfred E. Newman is just as hilarious and perfect as George Dubya Newman. Truly LOL material.

In the end, I had to say “Bravo!” and I can honestly report I got at least five bucks worth of chuckles, giggles and hoots for my five bucks.

Maybe even $7.50 worth! It was great to see an old friend from the past still alive, relevant and good.

THROUGH THE

SCARY I WISH I KNEW THE RULES, the ABC’s, the path.

I wish I didn’t have memories of driving around Reno on dark nights and dark days hoping I would find my son. Where might he be? Sometimes I wished he was in jail. At least he would be safe.

These are the thoughts of a parent of a young addict.

Will I get to be the parent of an addict in recovery, a child who is living? I don’t know. I hope so. Yes, I think so. To think otherwise is dangerous and not helpful.

I have six years experience now. It took four to tie the events together, to not accept the explanations for the lost pieces: the car, the grades, the jobs. Another to say the word addict. Another to start to find our own personal path through the scary.

I have learned now that 10- 15% of people are born addicts. Like cancer, they are predisposed thus implying it’s not their fault. I like this. It takes away the stigma, it salves my parenting, and allows us to treat it as a disease. This fact is a gift, I love this gift.

But here’s the rub. At 4am when sleep is impossible, wouldn’t my son rather be responsible for his actions? To give name, if only to himself, what caused him to pick up that beer, vodka, tequila, weed, little round pill of something that tastes bitter.

I’m not sure that it credits a person’s life to say it’s a disease that makes him an addict. Would it be better to allow my son to say he felt too much the personal events that make up his life? Is this addiction recovery heresy? I don’t know. I’d tell him it’s all my fault if I could make it go away. The question becomes not why, but how to work on recovery.

This is what I have found to be the most difficult thing about addiction: There is no one clear path to recovery. In this space, I will tell you a little about my family’s path through the scary, and invite others to tell me their’s. The focus will not be on the long distance loneliness of the acts of addiction, but rather on the successes of recovery. Our successes involved a one way ticket to Bangkok, a $20 dollar bill, and a Thai monastery.
