Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Man, I’ve got jet lag. I’ve been trying to work all day, but I can’t concentrate. I just got back Tuesday afternoon from a vacation/class in Istanbul, Turkey, that can only be described as epic.

I love traveling abroad. It certainly broadens the mind and gives a real perspective of these United States.

The biggest problem is no matter where I go, I have incorrect ideas about the place I’m going to visit. The class had a pretty large amount of advance reading, so I had a lot of accurate historical information, but it’s the modern cultural stuff that made me worse than ignorant, since I thought I actually knew something from watching the news.

Plus that whole Gezi Park, Taksim Square thing blew up basically as I was getting on the plane. At any rate, I’m going to write a longer piece about it in the near future, but in a nutshell, these were some of the best weeks of my life. I had a blast. I met an amazing number of cool people, met a couple of crazy ones, saw more mosques and churches than I can remember, had some beers, saw some protesters, had some beers with some protesters.

The only times I ever felt threatened in this 99 percent Muslim country was when I heard false reports of antiAmerican sentiment or deadly force being used against protesters. To the contrary, people went out of their way to help me, even when I was acting stupidly.

I did get to see how it feels to be under constant surveillance by the government. We were warned about saying too much on our cell phones, in emails or on social media. In fact, a whole big news story about government spying came out while I was there. I also saw real examples of government using the media to tell its lies to the public. And if you think that sounds horrible, the Turkish government is just as bad.

Finally, don’t forget to vote in our Biggest Little Best of Northern Nevada popularity contest. Time grows short.

Nevada’s motto should be “Mississippi of the West.” We employ Greyhound therapy for the mentally ill, our schools rank 49th.

There are only 13 states that incarcerate more people per capita than Nevada, and we have a legislature that continues to demonstrate that the continued receipt of gifts and donations from lobbyists trumps doing the work of the people of this state.

The governor? Sunny is just acting in his own self-interest. He clearly has political ambitions beyond governing Nevada, so pandering to the right is what he must do. Expand early voting? Can’t do that! Sign a law closing loopholes in gun background checks? OMG, the NRA might blacklist him. Tax increases are bad unless they are only imposed locally, in which case they aren’t really tax increases. The Nevada Legislature is packed with ALEC zombies and to make it worse, taxpayers foot the bill for their ALEC membership dues. I’m not going to give Democratic legislators a free pass here either. Look at Debbie Smith’s stunt, which will pretty much kill the Legend’s project with her lastminute amendment requiring they build a 300- rather than 200-room hotel. Not to mention that legislators of both parties who were complicit in turning the campaign finance bill into a mockery of its original intent. The Legislature handed NV Energy decades of guaranteed rate hikes without batting an eyelash.

I’m pretty sure that stunt will finally make us number one in “something.”

But sadly, that something will be us having the highest utility rates in the West, since we are currently number two. I guess the only good thing about this is that the clown car also known as the Nevada Legislature meets only every two years. Just think about the damage that they and Gov. Sunny could do if they were in Carson City full time.

Why don’t you news people report about the fact that the city of Reno has cut water off to the homeless in a time of high temps? This is a high desert. What is the City Council trying to do? Are they trying to get your tax dollars and mine lost in lawsuits? The homeless may be poor, but they can still sue the city for committing the crime of cutting off access to water in a desert, or could it be that they don’t care since it won’t cost them anything but our taxes?

Re “Trash talk” (Feature story, June 20): There is much more to this story. Too bad Jason Geddes is the point man. Too bad as well that it’s another Reno rubber stamp.

Waste Management and Reno just use recycling as a feel-good ploy.

There isn’t any meaningful signage nor education on this topic. Thus, there is widespread co-mingling and pilferage. Many folks are conscientious about recycling; I see them at Commercial Row all the time. They and many others (who just want to be garbage-fee free) just dump any/ everything they consider “paper” or “plastic” into both green and yellow bins and at the Greg Street, Commercial Row and satellite locations.

Even these “voluntary” drop-offs are grossly co-mingled and contaminated. All sorts of Styrofoam, plastic film, and hard stuff like buckets and chairs gets dumped in. Earth Day “bottle” lessons, my foot! It is simply ingrained Nevada culture to dump and waste stuff. So we have to pay extra for a commercial “sort” (after-the-fact)? I already know how to recycle, and I make the effort.

What about thousands of detergent bottles from laundromats? Why not pay delegated homeless to pre-sort after special events?

At Commercial Row, pilferers help themselves all weekend and have for years, while WM complains recycling “doesn’t pay.” An old guy with a shopping cart wanders all over northeast Sparks on recycle days. It doesn’t take a Ph.D. to get a working recycling program going—I have done this for years after school, at work and in communities. I can tell you, most Reno WM customers aren’t “smarter than a fifth-grader” when it comes to sorting or even visualizing re-use. Bah, humbug.

Brad’s invalid opinion Re “Larry Cooper” (In the mix, Jan. 17): This is a terrible review. If you’ve actually listened to this kid’s album, you’d know that Mr. Bynum obviously did not. The album is a bit lo-fi, but the fact that this kid could achieve a sound like that in mono is nothing short of impressive.

The entire thing is a well thought out concept album about love, heartbreak and healing, and flows quite well from the first track to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed every song. This review does it no justice, and I can see that Mr. Bynum did not do his homework but obviously thumbed through the tracks without much thought. This is a very talented songwriter, and this album should be reviewed by someone who’ll actually listen to it. Go listen for yourself, and don’t let this jackwad give you his evidently invalid opinion.

Distracted driving required Re “Traffic offenses” (Editorial, June 6): A few weeks back there was a story discussing methods being used for road safety, and their opposite effect. I have recently had an alcohol detection device put on my vehicle. Let me stop here and say this is not an email complaining of unfair punishment. In fact, my DUI saved my life. That being said, I would invite you to research these devices a bit in relationship to that article. The device must be used to start the vehicle, a very great and productive way to prevent drinking and driving. However, you must also reblow into the device randomly throughout your drive. A distraction and stressful situation while driving.

If you blow too hard, too soft, not long enough etc., the car will shut down. Also at random times it will “ask” you to pull over and stop the car immediately. In traffic or on the freeway, this situation becomes very dangerous. I could explain more, but I think the idea is there. I thought that a closer and unbiased look at the device by journalists could be interesting to read.

Anybody getting Cold War deja vu from this catand-mouse chase of Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who let the cat out of the bag about our government’s deeply Orwellian domestic spying?

He’s likely to get caught eventually. In fact, if half of what he said is true, the government can neither afford not to catch him nor to let him go to a speedy trial, which was the case with another American patriot/spy, Bradley Manning, who is being tried for leaking classified documents to Wikileaks.

Let’s not get into the debate of whether these men are American heroes. We’re a newspaper, so our belief that information that improves the American democracy should be available to the public is set in stone. Both these men threw away their comfortable lives for something. And there is no question as to whether their lives were the first things sacrificed.

But can we at least get one thing out of the way?

It’s too stupid to be part of the discussion, and the Obama administration’s use of this argument is so intellectually dishonest, it’s got to be pointed out lest they say it enough that people start to believe it.

Edward Snowden’s running to China or Russia or Ecuador is not proof he is a traitor. Snowden is by all measures a smart guy. But he, like the rest of us, has had four years of examples of how this administration treats whistleblowers, and this administration’s penchants for spying on truth disseminators, like journalists. Bradley Manning, for instance, was at least subjected to extreme solitary confinement, which a

pre-trial judge found should take time off his final sentence. It’s torture, by a euphemistic name. This is America, and such treatment used to be called cruel and unusual punishment.

There is not a judge in the United States who would say a human being does not have the right to defend him- or herself against physical harm or death. So running to logical places to avoid harm at the hands of the United States government isn’t proof of anything except that the person is neither an idiot nor suffering from a messianic complex that would require him to seek crucifixion.

On the other hand, news outlets have reported that he has said that he specifically took the job in order to get proof of the government’s surveillance programs. It’s pretty hard to use that fact, and the fact that he swore an oath to protect the government’s secrets, to call him anything but a spy. That the accusation is being made by a government that is spying on its own citizens somewhat undercuts its moral power.

Recent disclosures, like Snowden’s, and including those that showed the government monitored Associated Press phone records, clearly show that our government is taking irredeemable steps toward a fascist, authoritarian view of its citizens.

A Benjamin Franklin paraphrase, “Those who sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither,” gets bandied about quite a bit in these post 9-11 years.

These days we have to ask what people who gave up liberty but didn’t get security deserve. Ω

Kids tweet the darndest things When I heard about Joey Heck’s racist, sexist and homophobic tweets, my first reaction was to feel sorry for Nevada Rep. Joe Heck and his family. After all, adolescent brains don’t reach maturity until 22 or so, and Joey is just 16. Many teenagers do stupid stuff they grow up to regret. by But that was before I read them.

Sheila Leslie Twitter is like an illicit drug for notoriously impulsive teenagers and the perfect vehicle to display juvenile rants and offensive commentary to a wider audience—in this case, the entire nation.

Joey had only 296 followers but was fairly prolific with 3,196 tweets until he abruptly stopped in midMay, just as he laments his lack of a driver’s license when he has a beautiful truck (Chevy Silverado) waiting to be driven. The truck in the picture he posted looks new, over-sized, and a bit much for an impulsive new driver, leaving the impression of a teenager accustomed to privilege and wealth.

Buzzfeed broke the story, reviewing Twitter accounts of Congressional children after a story

emerged about Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake’s 15-year-old son’s racist and anti-Semitic tweets.

Inexplicably, Joey’s unsanitized Twitter account was still in place several days later. Reading through his tweets (@joeyj424) one can imagine the sort of adult he might become: a Fox News-loving bigot, increasingly resentful that his privileged status as a House member’s son might be threatened by minorities, gays, women, or anyone that doesn’t look or think like him.

It’s sad, really, to read his uncompassionate tweets about the Boston bombing suspect, although it’s no worse than what you hear from talk radio or right-wing political commentators: “Why the hell would you treat somebody with shrapnel wounds that’s suspected of the bombing. Let that bitch bleed.”

His comments, which appear here uncorrected, about gays and minorities are appalling: “There are gays everywhere.

Maybe that’s gods way of thinning

out the population because faggots can’t have babies,” (re-tweeted message) “This Indian Muslim whatever she is in my class is gonna get slapped #stfu #youreannoying” “You can’t be white and act ghetto ... You’re white. If God wanted you to be black he’d make you black stop acting like you’re black #idiot” The worst of the deplorable tweets highlight Joey’s disrespect for President Obama, saying all the president is good at is “spear chucking and rock skipping. The sports they do in his home country.”

According to news reports, Rep. Heck quickly apologized for the tweets: “I am extremely disappointed in my son’s use of the offensive and inappropriate language on Twitter.

That type of language has never been permitted in our home … I apologize to everyone he may have offended.

My son also apologizes for his insensitive behavior. My wife and I have addressed this family matter directly with him, and he has learned from it.”

One certainly wants to take his apology in its best light, although another one of Joey’s tweets seems to hint of at least some familial familiarity with a slur: “Fanny pack = fag bag. That’s what my mom calls them.”

Surely there are many teenage boys who are equally offensive and immature on Twitter, whose parents would be horrified if they knew what they were saying. While parents are a child’s best and most influential teachers, we cannot discount the effect of ugly political discourse on television, talk radio and from prominent elected officials day after day.

Children mimic what they hear at home, at school, on TV, and from their friends and trusted adults. We all have a responsibility to influence the young Joey Hecks in our orbit and lower the confrontational dialogue if for no other reason than to avoid creating intolerant adult Joeys, full of vitriol and dehumanizing insults.

In the end, Joey Heck may have taught us all an important lesson. Ω

What happens when different is good?

Gay and transgender rights are a hot button topic in America right now, and it’s easy to see why. With so many states amending their constitutions to legalize gay marriage, and with discrimination against transgender individuals still going strong, we are definitely in a period of flux for how by Chanelle Bessette sexual orientation and gender selfidentification operate under the eyes of the law and in society as a whole.

Readers might remember my column from a few months ago where I spoke out in favor of LGBT rights and encouraged everyone to show the Legislature that they wanted a repeal of the ban on gay marriage in Nevada.

Currently in Nevada, members of the LGBT community are protected under the state’s anti-discrimination laws and hate crime statutes, but while there is growing acceptance of their community, there is still a sense of “Otherness” about the way LGBT people are treated under by the government and by popular culture.

Traveling to Thailand this month has revolutionized my perspective

on social and legal attitudes toward members of the LGBT community.

A somewhat famous buzzword for the Thai people is the term “ladyboy.” The culture around this word is a fascinating one, and it is not easily explained. Essentially, it’s a cultural phenomenon that has existed in Thailand—and some other parts of southeast Asia—for some time in which many biologically male children have been raised female.

This phenomenon has resulted in a large number of the biologically male population crossdressing and/ or undergoing elective surgery to become at least partially female, which is accomplished by receiving breast implants but not necessarily changing their genitalia. In addition to “ladyboy,” there is a word of similar meaning called “kathoey” which can be used to refer to either a man-to-woman transgender or an effeminate gay man.

Some Thais even refer to kathoeys as being members of a third gender, as they don’t fit into the

traditional dichotomies of masculine biological man and feminine biological woman.

According to some Thai people I’ve spoken with, members of the LGBT community in Thailand are generally treated well in common society, although the law does not provide protection based on sexual orientation or identification nor is same sex marriage legal. There is generally very little desire, however, for the LGBT community to hold pride events because most members of the community don’t feel ostracized enough to highlight their differences as a group. It is understood that certain gender and sexual orientation expectations come with the territory of being male, female or the third gender, but overall, differences are neither celebrated nor demonized.

For me, it is strange to spend time in a country where sexual orientation and gender identification aren’t considered a big deal.

Sexuality appears to be a relatively fluid concept in Thailand—and

more realistic, if you ask me—where people explore their preferences without judgment. In high school and university, girls will ask each other out as a way to gain experience in dating, and tomboys seem to be just as abundant as ladyboys. There doesn’t seem to be any stigma to having your sexuality out in the open either. I’ve had ladyboy tour guides and beauticians, gay student helpers at the university, and I’ve seen older white men going on dates with passing but suspiciously husky-voiced women.

The whole experience has led me to wonder what it would be like if the U.S. was as open to LGBT lifestyles as the Thai community.

Strictly defined gender roles seem to be hardwired into the American mind, but if we weren’t so set on labels, would equality be reinforced, or would we just find other ways to alienate groups of people? As America makes its next move in terms of LGBT rights, only time will tell. Ω

Health fair planned

SJR 15 is the amendment repealing favored tax treatment of mining.

Segerblom said the public doesn’t know Sandoval’s “view of the world and Nevada,” but could be informed “if we could compete financially.”

Why can’t they?

“Because in a gubernatorial election, turnout is just so far down the powers-that-be realize he has a lock.”

That prevents big donors from investing in what they assume is a losing Democrat, Segerblom suggested.

There will be a free health fair in downtown Reno on July 13. Basic medical screening and general checkups will be available free in City Plaza, the concrete slab located where the Mapes Hotel used to be.

The fair will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is being conducted by Duwell Medical, a health care network.

Hospitals price power probed The Obama administration, which has focused its attention on waste as a way of holding down costs in the new national health care program—called the Affordable Care Act (ACA)—is under growing criticism from analysts for ignoring hospital mergers and consolidations, which drive up costs, and hospital purchases of medical practices, both of which have been factors in the Reno/ Sparks market.

In a February Time magazine cover story, Steven Brill described the consolidation and acquisition problems. Last week Eduardo Porter wrote about them in the New York Times. Columbia Journalism Review health care reporter Trudy Lieberman wrote last week, “And the ACA indeed did not tackle a hard one—the growing concentration and power of hospital systems and the physician practices they increasingly own, which gives them the leverage to control the price of care.”

Renown Hospital in Reno was formerly a publicly owned freestanding hospital. It is now part of an out-of-state chain. St. Mary’s Hospital, once a local Catholic hospital, is now owned by Prime Healthcare, another out-of-state chain.

“If there is one thing that economists know, it is that market concentration drives prices up—and quality and innovation down,” Porter wrote. “Research by Leemore S. Dafny of Northwestern University, for instance, found that hospitals raise prices by about 40 percent after the merger of nearby rivals. Other studies have found that hospital mergers increase the number of uninsured in the vicinity. Still others even suggest that market concentration may hurt the quality of care. Indeed, for all the emphasis on curbing waste, recent evidence suggests that health care costs are not being driven by intensive use of high-tech procedures as much as by rising prices for even the most humdrum treatments, which are today among the most expensive in the world.”

In Reno after Renown bought out two cardiac practices and put their surgeons on hospital staff in 2010 and 2011, the hospital controlled nearly all the cardiac surgeons in the valley. The Federal Trade Commission found that “competition for adult cardiology services was effectively eliminated” in this market and last year ordered Renown to release some of its staff cardiologists from “non-compete” contracts and allow them to join outside practices. Before acquiring the practices, Renown had no cardiologists on staff.

But there is not likely to be a remedy like that for most private practice acquisitions because most acquisitions are of family care practices. One prominent Reno physician said, “It’s very common.

Yes, yes, it’s happening all over the place. The most of them are primary care practices and Renown has picked up a bunch, and Saints [St. Mary’s] has done some. Carson Tahoe’s done a bunch.”

Innovative mortgage plan launched The city of North Las Vegas has launched a novel experiment to try to help hard-pressed homeowners. It is employing the city’s power to condemn property to seize home loans for underwater homes.

The city will then pay mortgage investors less than the full value of bad home loans.

The program was launched in partnership with Mortgage Resolution Partners (MRP), a California program that refinances home loans seized through eminent domain. It will charge the city a fee for each loan and each side will accept a cut on the margin between the original mortgage and a new Federal Housing Administrationguaranteed loan.

The North Las Vegas City Council approved the plan June 19 on a 4-1 vote.

The water’s edge

Money talks Democrats are in ascendancy, but are leaving their party behind Ten years ago, it was unlikely that anyone would have imagined that within a decade, the Nevada Legislature would by give fair and respectful hearings to Dennis Myers gun control, marriage equality, marijuana, treating mining equally in tax law, and a number of other issues— much less actually enact them.

But that’s what happened this year.

“I thought it was fantastic, because we didn’t raise taxes but we did amazing, progressive legislation, things that I’ve been looking for all my career,” said Clark County Sen. Richard “Tick” Segerblom.

Segerblom himself was one of the 2013 legislative session’s prime movers, succeeding in advancing

The mining tax amendment will appear on the ballot in 2014, marriage amendment in 2016 if it is approved by a second legislature. An expected U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the issue this week could be a factor, but would not necessarily stop repeal from going forward.

In earlier legislatures, Segerblom said, “We could not even get a hearing on medical marijuana. We could not get a hearing on marriage equality.

We were told by [legislative leaders] that they were too controversial. That happened on gun control. This time we have the hearings, we passed them, the governor vetoed in some cases, but it was unbelievable.”

Segerblom argues that the demographic changes that have given Democrats greater strength in the legislature show no sign of abating.

“If you look at the demographics, Hispanics and Asians, those are very young populations. By the end of this decade, we’re going to have majorities in both houses. I do think we will have a Democratic governor.”

He said, “We’re going to be like California,” in the sense that the party will have supermajorities in both houses of the legislature.

He said the only thing that keeps the Democrats from being competitive in the next governor’s race against incumbent Republican Brian Sandoval is money. Sandoval has already piled up a huge campaign treasury. If the Democrats had the money to draw a contrast on issues, Segerblom said, a Democratic candidate for governor could show the public that Sandoval is out of step with the populace. That would make the Republican vulnerable, Segerblom believes.

“I do, because I don’t think he’s going to be able to support SJR [Senate Joint Resolution] 15, which is a big issue in Nevada. He’s wrong on gun control. He’s sat on his hands on education.”

But if this legislature was progressive on social and cultural issues, there was a threshold beyond which the lawmakers would not go—an economic threshold. And that did not show much progressive. The lawmakers did little that might upset the business community—particularly big business—and a great deal to please it. Regulation of NV Energy was reduced. Hollywood got a tax break. Big casinos got help against little casinos.

It was startling that it was Democrats who proposed these changes for big special interests. It put Republicans in the unusual position of taking normally Democratic stances— as when right wing Washoe legislator Ira Hansen offered an amendment to stop Democratic efforts to lighten regulation of NV Energy.

There was a time when rigorous scrutiny of utilities was a Democratic article of faith. It defined the Democrats for generations. Las Vegas reporter Steve Sebelius wrote that Hansen’s “often-incendiary comments occasionally contained nuggets of sensibility.

But it was his late-session advocacy against an establishment-backed fuelswitch bill sought by NV Energy that, while unsuccessful, once again contributed to the 2013 session’s incongruous image of Republicans advocating for the little guy while Democrats sided with big corporations.”

How progressive can Democrats be on economic issues when Ira Hansen finds himself to the left of them?

Even when the lawmakers voted against the mining industry, the political risk was minor because all mining corporations are based out of state and all but one out of the country—plus those who work in mining are concentrated in areas that are already heavily Republican and thus non-competitive.

Republicans had no fear of losing those areas, and Democrats had no expectation of winning them.

Can the Democrats be buddies with the big boys and still retain their appeal?

“It’s a difficult journey for them,” said political analyst Fred Lokken. “They’re assuming that the Republican party is going nowhere.”

As a result, Lokken said, Democrats are giving voters not their historic stances on issues, but a choice of Republicans or unRepublicans.

“You have a Republican Party dominated by their most conservative members—or the Democrats. It’s a choice that is fueling a growing level of disillusionment in Nevada.”

Lokken said that people registering non-partisan in the state is growing. When people leave a political party they are not necessarily looking to the other major party or to small parties.

He said what is happening in Nevada is similar to what the Clinton years did to the Democratic Party nationally, when it became more corporate-oriented and found it “highly lucrative.” Corporate money, he said, became the “hallmark of the Democratic Party.” And those kinds of tactics and strategies are being urged on state Democratic parties by national officials.

“I think there’s been an effort by the national party organization to have a conversation with the state parties, urging them to get into this kind of money,” he said.

Corporate money has become “the hallmark of the Democratic Party.”

Fred Lokken Political analyst With big money comes changes in party policies, and it shows up in legislative voting records. The Democrats are trying to see “how far they can push it” without alienating their base, Lokken said.

That disconnect is at the heart of low voter turnout, Lokken said.

When voters are questioned about why they are disillusioned, they give many reasons, but the number one reason, he said, is that “this party system doesn’t represent anyone in the country anymore.”

Both political parties, he said, are in the grip of a “huge uncontrollable addiction, and they’re unwilling to enter a 12-step program.” Money has become everything. Both Republicans and Democrats opposed legislation proposed by Secretary of State Ross Miller to require late campaign financial disclosures, he pointed out.

“Even lowly local races have become insanely expensive,” Lokken said. Ω

Community garden growing in Sun Valley The Ridge House and the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows’ Sun Valley Teen Center (BGC) have recently teamed up to create a community garden for Sun Valley. by Sage Leehey BGC started the garden last year, but the Ridge House joined earlier this year.

Taft Barnett of AmeriCorps VISTA, who works at the Ridge House, sagel@ came up with the idea to start a garden for their clients. The Ridge House newsre view.c om helps its clients with re-entering into civilian life after prison and with substance abuse counseling. It wanted to start a garden to help this process.

“It’s very therapeutic, so people who are recovering from addiction and recovering from a criminal lifestyle, that sort of a thing—being out in a garden is very peaceful, it’s rewarding, it’s confidence-building,” Barnett said. “It kind of connects you to nature and life, which is a really powerful tool in healing.”

He and John Collins, workforce development coordinator at The Ridge House, went to a screening of a movie about community gardens recommended to them by the USDA Cooperative Extension office.

“People started mentioning these community gardens around town that were struggling, and one thing that The Ridge House has is labor force,” Barnett said. “A lot of our clients, when they’re not working, we require them to do community service to stay productive. And we thought, well, if we have the space, and they have the labor, and they’re struggling to get people involved—maybe we should start approaching some of these struggling gardens and see if we can help them, and they can help us.”

It led them to the BGC’s garden in Sun Valley.

Currently, the garden has 12 wooden beds—these are the BGC’s—and The garden is located at 142 E. First Ave. in six plastic beds that are The Ridge House’s, three of which are planted. There Sun Valley. is also one struggling row of pumpkins that belong to the BGC. In the beds, the groups have planted a variety of different things including strawberries, watermelons, squash, beans, kale, basil and cilantro. And the Ridge House has a bed filled with tomato plants in pots that haven’t been planted in the ground yet because they’re lacking in soil, which should be coming soon.

“We’ve gotten a lot of really great community support from Home Depot,” Barnett said. “They donated all of the soil we have right now, and in the next week or so, they’re going to be coming up and installing some automatic irrigation and helping us fill up the rest of the beds.”

Barnett also said that Home Depot has been talking about creating more planters and rows in the space as well. He was especially excited about the irrigation, though, because they’ve currently had to send someone up daily from their office in Reno to water each of the beds from one hose. BGC has also been watering the beds.

“We’re really hoping that we can turn this into a sort of community project up here in Sun Valley,” Barnett said. “Sun Valley is a food desert.

There’s not really a lot of options for things like fresh produce out here, so one of the things we’re trying to do is for this to grow into a space where the community can come garden. As you can see, it’s not really much of that now. But also, we were thinking about starting a little vegetable stand. We’re talking to the Food Bank about being able to accept EBT—or I guess they call it SNAP now—so that the community members can come down here and buy produce, ideally that’s grown in Sun Valley, but we’re thinking that to get started, we’ll have to buy from other Nevada growers.” Ω

The decline of a critical county program puts many of our impoverished seniors into an even worse place

They gather the food on their trays, file onto benches and hunch over the meals. On a recent day, that meal was a single slice of sandwich meat on a single slice of bread, a scoop of potato salad, a scoop of blood-red beets, and a chocolate chip cookie. Between sips of milk and coffee, their feeble voices were barely louder than the scrape of utensils on their plastic plates in the cavernous room. Here is what they have been talking about: The decline of the agency that is keeping them alive.

“Death by a thousand cuts,” as Washoe County Senior Services Director Grady Tarbutton told TV stations during a recent media blitz. The 15-employee cut has been on the books since April, but wasn’t widely reported until less than a week before they were set to take effect; the very day the Reno News & Review began investigating. Tarbutton directed the media focus to a nurse who travels to hundreds of senior’s homes and helps keep at least 15 critical patients alive.

Her job is one of the positions being cut, and some of her patients will likely die without her daily visits, she said.

and state will outsource the program entirely.

“We have had to cut the number of recipients in the range of 1,500 down to 700 a year,” Tarbutton said of the Senior Law Project. For a suggested donation of $50 or less, the office helps with wills, affidavits of death, power of attorney, consumer disputes, social security issues, government benefits and landlordtenant issues.

“This is not where we want to be,” Tarbutton said, adding that budget cuts have whittled the entire senior services department down from 43 employees in 2007 to just 25 now.

By the end of July, elimination of five more positions in the Senior Law Project will bring the county Senior Services Department staff to less than half of what it once was, even as the senior population has nearly doubled from 40,000 to 76,000 over the same period.

Outsourcing to non-profits is where the county jobs and services are going. “Their salary and benefits packages are less than the county,” Tarbutton says.

To find out how much less, just walk down the hall to where the county employees work in the Senior Law Project.

“We have been advised by the union not to talk to media,” said one of the employees, declining to say her name. But without further prompting, she continued

to talk, saying that they had just received letters offering work at the non profit Nevada Legal Services which will be assuming the county’s Senior Law Project clients.

“I pull in $52,000 a year,” said the County Senior Law Project legal secretary, adding that the new non-profit is offering her the same job for $27,000. “The salary difference is just too ...” she frowned and shrugged, holding up each of her palms like unbalanced scales of justice.

“ We have had to cut the number of recipients in the range of 1,500 down to 700 a year … This is not where we want to be.”

Grady Tarbutton Washoe County Senior Services Director “It is sad that they don’t want to continue with us because of the knowledge base,” said Rhea Gertken, directing attorney with Nevada Legal Services in Reno.

“We do pay people less,” she said. “That is not representative of the quality of advocates that we have. The staff we have remain despite the fact that it is less than half the pay.”

She said they will be hiring more people and even offering new services to the county clients like foreclosure mediation.

She said her offices have been doing the county’s work for nine months already. Not only has Nevada Legal Services been doing the county work, they will be moving into the county offices.

A non-profit moving into government offices is a challenge.

“It is causing some headaches,” Gertken said. “You can’t just move in. There are logistical things. You have another layer of them saying you have to talk to facilities management. You have to talk to tech services. You have to get everything approved and the county commission has to weigh in.”

It’s a learning process for everyone. While Nevada Legal Services has been an institution in rural areas for years, “This is the first time in Nevada that one of the established legal service agencies has assumed senior services in a major county,” Gertken said, adding, “It is sort of new in terms of Nevada as a whole.” She also worked in Las Vegas where she said the city turned its senior law program over to a new non-profit that was formed by the actual city law employees themselves.

When asked if more outsourcing is on the way, Tarbutton said, “It is all going to depend on if there is someone in the community who can do the work or not.”

Not everything is on the table.

There are some state and federal minimum requirements. “The social work program is something we have to keep. Aging and disability resource and adult day care are all services that we have to keep.” Ω

Know your rights: Renters are also under the gun due to cuts at the Tenants’ Rights Center Washoe County’s seniors are not the only ones who have it rough in these days of declining money and services. Renters, too, are having a difficult time exercising their rights, and their advocates are also hard hit.

According to the Nevada Supreme Court, Access to Justice Commission report, March 11, 2013, review of Nevada Legal Services: “There was a precipitous drop in cases without litigation.

The loss was entirely from the Tenants’ Rights Center, due to the layoffs of half the TRC’s staff.”

Declines in grants from Congress cut the budget by more than a half-million dollars last year, and NLS’s total number of contacts with clients was down by half from 2007 to 2011. Meanwhile, 66 percent of the 88,000 client contacts in the state were for housing according to the report.

“And we know that there are people who [need help who] are not contacting us,” says NLS directing attorney in Reno Rhea Gertken. When NLS moves into the Washoe County Senior Services building off Ninth and Sutro streets, potential new clients will be right down the hall every day at lunch. Many have never asked for legal help.

“Sandy,” 64, is anticipating problems with her landlord. She did not wish to give her name for fear her landlord would single her out for further mistreatment.

“They are going to give me a big stink about the security deposit when I move out. The rug was dirty when I moved in. The walls were dirty. They didn’t want to fix the garbage disposal which was leaking. My brother was with me, and he said it was substandard. I called him [the landlord] an asshole!”

“A lot of people take these things very personally,” said Rhea Gertken, directing attorney of the Reno Office of Nevada Legal Services. “You don’t want it to become confrontational. A lot of times it is based on a misunderstanding, miscommunication, or the tenants and landlords don’t like each other.”

“Sandy” touched on one of the most common problems, according to Gertken: Security deposits.

Even experts in the system can become victims. For instance, Pat Barnes who once worked for the County’s Senior Law Project wrote to the Reno News &

Review to tell her story of having a $500 security deposit taken with no accounting of how the money had been used by the landlord.

“That right there is a violation,” Gertken said. “And we see that all the time where landlords are not even communicating with the tenants.” She said she has clients every week with security deposit issues.

Having once worked for the county agency that deals with security deposits, Barnes decided to take on the issue. She had researched Nevada’s tenant law N.R.S. 118A, which says a security deposit can only be used for three things: • Remedying any default of the tenant in the payments of rent.

• Repairing damages to the premises other than normal wear.

• Cleaning the dwelling unit.

Armed with the law, Barnes went to small claims court. At the hearing she said the attorney for the management company claimed $150 of the deposit was used for “vacuuming new carpet and dumping the old carpet.”

Vacuuming new carpet is clearly not part of a former tenant’s responsibility under the law.

Barnes says that Judge Pierre Hascheff caught that mistake but knocked off only $50 from the cleaning bill.

“It’s only for extraordinary damages,” said Gertken. “A lot of times they are talking about painting when it is only a couple of nail holes in the wall. If there are kids and someone wrote on the walls with a sharpie, then that is something that the tenant has to pay for.”

But knowing the law doesn’t guarantee justice. “What are my options?” Barnes wrote, feeling that an appeal was in order. “The court clerk’s office said it would cost more than $500 just to file an appeal,” Barnes wrote.

Hascheff was at a conference and could not be reached for comment.

And the nightmare wasn’t over, she said the landlord then filed a counter claim for hundreds of dollars to clean oil spots off the driveway. That claim was thrown out of court, but the whole mess was an aggravation and

the injustice really hit home for Barnes, who had dedicated herself to defending tenants’ rights.

“Security deposit theft is no different from any other kind of theft,” she wrote. “It’s the tenant’s money, not the landlord’s. Security deposit theft is the same as a pickpocket lifting your wallet or a robber stealing the money you just withdrew from the ATM. It’s theft.”

Using an attorney who specializes in tenant rights like Nevada Legal Services doesn’t guarantee justice either, because like Barnes’ case, many judges can be as dull as a gavel on tenants’ rights.

“Yes, we have some disagreements in court with some of the judges of what is appropriate under the law,” Gertken said. “And we are pretty sure we were right under the law.”

Gertken is not alone in encountering judges who need a little schooling on tenants rights. “It is a real education process,” said Michael Cirac, a former Reno legal columnist and attorney who represents tenants and landlords.

“The laws have become more complex,” Cirac says. “I would like to see landlords educated in the basic Landlord Tenant Act in Nevada and state and federal requirements,” he said. “That would go a long way to solving these problems.”

He points out that mobile home managers are already required to take classes.

“I do think it is a good idea,” he said. “They are required to attend every year. Expanding that to residential landlords would be beneficial.”

Misunderstanding eviction law is another common pitfall.

“Tenants can effectively defend themselves against it, but the time frames can be daunting,” Gertken says, adding that tenants only have five to seven days to respond to a summary eviction notice, and if they don’t respond, “The tenant isn’t entitled to a notice before the sheriff comes out to take them out.” Within 24 hours, the tenant has a sheriff with a gun at their door telling them its time to leave immediately. “Then the issue is, what is going to happen to their stuff? They (the landlord) can keep it for 30 days but can charge for storage and moving.”

Factor into the equation that the forms, notices, laws and documents include legalese that is a foreign language to many people, especially some native Spanish speakers. It doesn’t take long to find individuals with issues with landlords at Washoe County Senior Services.

An investigative look at the storied burger

Reno. People were still calling burgers sandwiches then. I was certainly aware of the Awful Awful at an early age.

One travel website reads, “Big. Scrumptious. Delicious. Hot. Tasty!

These are only a few of the words that describe the one and only Awful Awful hamburger!”

The problem is, there is no one and only Awful Awful. There are at least four of them, and they don’t necessarily resemble each other.

So we set out to find out what is an Awful Awful.

Considering how identified they now are with Nevada, it may surprise some silver staters that the Awful Awful was created in Idaho. Dick Graves owned clubs that featured slot machines and restaurants in Idaho until 1954, when slots were outlawed. He transferred his operations to Nevada.

Historian Dwayne Kling has written, “Graves’s practice was to open a casino, sell it, then move to another town.” He began with the Yerington Nugget, and then he operated in Carson City, Reno and Sparks. In Reno he had a partner, Jim Kelley. When Graves was ready to move on from Reno to Sparks, Kelley didn’t want to go, so they split up the business.

Among the assets they neglected to distribute was the Awful Awful.

As a result, it is available in the Carson, Reno and Sparks Nuggets and at a Reno restaurant called the Wolf Den, owned by Rick Heaney, who also owns the Reno Nugget. And what constitutes an Awful Awful has become fuzzy over the years.

For a definition of the Awful Awful, we turn to one of its inventors. After his retirement, Graves described the creation of the Awful Awful for the University of Nevada Oral History Program: “This sandwich was a hamburger sandwich which was actually, shall we say, invented by Bill Webster and myself and the cooks in the Twin Falls [club]. We started it there. It was very successful. ... This was a two-patty hamburger, much the same as a Big Mac today, with onions and tomato, mayonnaise and seasoning and all in it. ... I think it sold for about thirty-five, forty cents in those days. Now I don’t know what they get for it. They’re still selling it in the Sparks Nugget.”

Though double burgers are now sold in every fast food restaurant,

they weren’t that common when the Awful Awful was created.

An old Sparks Nugget matchbook cover lists the ingredients: “A fresh bun, two patties of our ground round, crisp lettuce, slice of garden fresh tomato, slice of nippy cheese, slice of mild Bermuda onion, spicy relish, dill pickle, mayonnaise, salt and pepper, served in a basket and covered with Idaho giant French fries.” Nippy is defined as biting or tangy.

Thus, we have it from two sources that the Awful Awful is, by definition, a double burger—which

The State newspaper Columbia, S.C. agrees with my Silver Sox recollection. And the Awful Awful is the full dish, not just the burger. It refers to double burger-and-fries.

What all this means is something a bit shocking—the Reno Nugget and the Wolf Den do not serve the Awful Awful. They sell a one-patty burger. Granted, the Wolf Den patty is substantial—half an inch thick, after cooking. But it’s not an Awful Awful. This means that in a 2010 competition conducted by the Food Network—whose operatives failed to do their homework—between the Reno and Sparks Awful Awfuls, the Reno Nugget won with an ordinary burger, not with an Awful Awful. I suspect, based on sales figures from numerous fast food chains, that a single-patty burger will always beat a double. Thus, the Reno Nugget actually forfeited the contest by not serving an Awful Awful. Add that to the fact that the Wolf Den and Carson Nugget (which does serve a real Awful Awful)—were excluded from the competition and the Food Network staged a dubious contest.

A case can also be made that the Sparks Nugget no longer sells an Awful Awful, either. It no longer accompanies the burger with a basket of fries, just a normal order of fries. But that evolution in the Awful Awful makes sense, which reminds me: Parents, in this age of childhood obesity, keep your children away from the Awful Awful at the Reno Nugget or the Wolf Den. Each is served with nearly a pound of fries—15.2 ounces was the batch we weighed.

Beyond that, here’s what I found about the various Awful Awfuls: Carson: Awful Awful served in a basket with fries in a sane amount, excellent fries of a type I’ve never encountered before.

The poor quality cheese on the burger undercut its appeal. $7.75.

Wolf Den: A good burger, though the taste is not particularly burger-like. I’m not dissing it, just warning that it may not taste like what you expect. Contrary to the menus at both places, it is not like the Reno version a few blocks away (and it costs a dollar more).

The seasoned bun adds to the taste.

Very good fries. $8.

Sparks: This is easily the most elaborately prepared. Customers are asked how they want the meat cooked, are given four choices of cheese, are given a choice of two kinds of fries, and are given two alternatives to fries.

The cook also knows the rare skill of how to melt cheese on hamburger.

The fries, however, are dry, almost stale, like McDonald’s fries. And why don’t restaurateurs learn that burgers require flat, not spear, pickles? $6.95.

My overall conclusion: While these are good burgers, that’s all they are. They don’t deserve all the fuss their publicists have stirred up, and there are better ones in the valley, such as at Great Basin Brewing Co. and Juicy’s Giant Hamburgers. Ω

Artist Joan Arrizabalga curated The Art of Gaming + for the university library’s summer art exhibition.

The Art of Gaming + “Gaming and the casinos are part of everyone’s life who lives here or has lived here,” says by Donnelyn Curtis, head of special collection Brad Bynum for the University of Nevada, Reno libraries.

“For some people it’s a bigger part. They bradb@ news re view.c om had jobs or they engaged in the things that happened in the casinos—gambling or going to the shows. For other people, it’s kind of in the peripheral vision, but you can’t not notice it. It’s part of our lives.”

with a historical perspective. As Curtis says, there’s “too many artists and too much politics”—too many local artists who are still active and competing for attention. But she wanted to continue the tradition of the last two shows.

“I was trying to capture the feeling that those shows had, which was, local artists, a kind of nostalgia, and different kinds of art,” she says.

Curtis wanted to work again with artist Joan Arrizabalaga, whose casino-themed work was featured in last year’s exhibition.

So, Curtis asked Arrizabalaga to curate an exhibition of gambling-themed art.

Arrizabalaga says that gambling has a special appeal to artists.

“It has a philosophical side to it,” she says. “It has a lot to do with chance and luck and how you see things. And of course there’s all the big losers. It’s exciting. It’s very unique to Nevada—at least it used to be in the days of yore.”

The core of the multifaceted exhibition, The Art of Gaming +, is work originally commissioned by Harrah’s Reno through

Stremmel Gallery back in the mid 1990s called The Art of Gaming. (The current exhibition amends a “+” to the title to designate that it’s a greatly expanded edition of the earlier show.) The Harrah’s exhibition had been throughout the hotelcasino’s then new tower, then called the Hampton Inn. It featured sculptures by local and regional artists like Arrizabalaga, Larry Williamson, Paul DiPasqua and Dwight Davidson.

Williamson’s wood sculptures are probably familiar to local art aficionados.

Davidson’s works are comical ceramic depictions of casino scenes featuring gambling farm animals. DiPasqua’s funky assemblage “Hobby Horse,” which appears to depict three-dimensional playing card

characters made of household junk, is prominently exhibited in the Knowledge Center’s atrium.

The new exhibition adds casino-themed work by painters Bob Adams and Mick Sheldon, as well slot machines from the collection of Marshall and Franklin Fey, the former owners of the Liberty Belle restaurant, showgirl costumes from the collection of Karen Burns, a former showgirl at the MGM Grand Hotel, and neon signs from the collection of Will Durham, which were recently exhibited at the Nevada Museum of Art. There’s also slot machine conceptual drawings from IGT, sketches by showgirl costume designer Mistinguett, historical photos, and more.

“There were so many things in the casinos that just had that feeling of excitement,” says Arrizabalaga. “And there were so many different artists involved in doing all that. It’s amazing when you really realize.

For instance, the costumes. Somebody had to design all that stuff. Somebody has to choreograph that huge show.” Ω

When I found out that the food from B Street came from the same kitchen as the Cantina, I felt a little deceived, as I’m generally not a huge fan of the Cantina.

When the food arrived, it left a lot to be desired. The presentation was plain and sloppy. The eggs Benedict was covered in a Hollandaise sauce that was too heavy. The English muffin wasn’t toasted, and the eggs were so overcooked that the yoke was hard boiled. The slice of ham appeared to come pre-sliced from a package.

The scramble was still runny while the bacon was overcooked and chewy. There were lots of peppers in the scramble, which I didn’t mind, but they weren’t listed on the menu. The scramble was paired with two large pieces of French bread, which seemed out of place.

The French toast fared the best, with a nice cinnamon flavor to it, although because the bread was so thick, it needed to be soaked longer in the egg mixture.

Both the Benedict and the French toast came with some fresh fruit that was very nice. When the waitress came by to ask how everything was, I told her the scramble and eggs Benedict, which both remained mostly uneaten, were not good and told her the issues. She commented that someone else had complained the eggs Benedict was overcooked, apologized and walked away.

B Street Café just opened a few weeks ago. However, when you have an outdoor establishment that will only be open through October, you don’t have a lot of time to get your act together. Also, when your food is coming from the kitchen of a restaurant that’s been open a long time, I expect more. But what they do have going is a vision. I’m not going to write B Street Café off just yet, and if anything, it seems like a wonderful place to have a drink, listen to music and enjoy the surroundings. Ω Photo/AlliSon Young

I invited my friends Dustin and Denny with me to check out B Street Café. We spent a few minutes at the counter deciding what we wanted and were happy to see that bottomless mimosas ($10) were being offered. Even better, the mimosas came with fresh squeezed orange juice. We went with the eggs Benedict ($10), an egg scramble with apple-smoked bacon ($9), and the apple cinnamon French toast ($9). We placed our orders, were given a number, and headed to one of the patio tables.

The place is more of a selfservice style joint, with a coffee bar setup near the counter. While the waitress would occasionally come around with a pitcher of mimosas, we found ourselves wandering back to the counter from time to time.

The waitress was very friendly, but she seemed a bit lost and overwhelmed despite the fact that only two other tables were occupied.

Totally bites The musical instruments you don’t use anymore!

World War Z With World War Z, we get two-thirds of a decent movie.

The movie has a helluva start, and an even better middle, making it seem like it’s going to deliver the big summer goods.

Then, in its final act, it totally craps out.

Too bad, because I was looking to Brad Pitt’s zombie movie as relief from the mediocre, big budget blockbusters we’ve gotten by this summer (with the blessed exceptions Bob Grimm of Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness).

in big delays and crucial reshoots. Lost and Prometheus scribe Damon Lindelof was brought in to write a new ending.

That ending strains so hard to be clever, you can see the throbbing veins popping out of its head. In a movie that called for a finale that kicked mortal ass, Lindelof and Forster deliver a few minutes of Brad Pitt hanging out in a refrigerator while a lone zombie chatters its teeth.

This is one of the least scary zombie films you are likely to see. Heck, I think I even got some better creeps out of this year’s zom-rom-com Warm Bodies. At PG-13, the movie can’t afford to show much blood, so it winds up rather tame. Forster and company pull too many punches, the sense of dread ratchets down, and the reliance is on pure thrills and action.

The film does deliver on the action in a killer opening sequence that sees Pitt’s Gerry Lane and his family stranded in a Philadelphia traffic jam as a zombie apocalypse goes into full swing. The revved up zombies of this film apparently have some

sort of rabies, and they aren’t interested in dinner. They just want to bite and move on in as rapid a pace as possible in order to spread their contagion.

Lane, a retired United Nations employee, finds himself in a race to find a solution for the zombie plague, partly to protect his family. Pitt, a well renowned family man, is good for the part, and he gives it a good go.

Honestly, the sight of zombies forming an anthill to scale a wall in Israel, and a nerve-rattling sequence above a jumbo jet, qualify as two of the coolest sequences to show up in a movie this year. It’s a shame that they’re in a movie that runs out of gas.

I won’t give up the major details of Lindelof’s screenplay tinkering. I will tell you that when you try to apply any kind of logic to his solutions, it just doesn’t play.

It seems as if the budget on this thing was skyrocketing, and they had to come up with something less expensive than a huge set piece at the end. This results in a movie that not only fails to deliver on its promise, but also does so in a bland, somewhat moronic way.

Zombies cling to a flying helicopter and bring it down in another memorable sequence. Their quick “turning” process results in some good, spasmodic physical acting.

As for reliance on the original novel by Max Brooks—son of Mel—this is pretty much an adaptation by title only. So, fans of the novel and fans of bloody zombies are going to be let down.

Fans of Pitt will see their hero, who also co-produced the film, laboring to save millions of dollars from the scrap heap.

World War Z ultimately feels derivative in its zombie portrayal (echoes of 28 Days Later), wimpy in its lack of bloodletting, and played out by film’s end.

I was all set for this film’s big finale, disappointed to see the movie didn’t have one final big trick up its sleeve. Pitt’s voiceover proclaims “this isn’t the end,” but unfortunately that same voiceover is, in fact, signaling the end of a movie that was setup for knockout blow, and delivers an ineffective kick to the shin. Ω

After Earth

The egos of M. Night Shyamalan and Will Smith collide in this stupid, useless movie about a father and son (Will and son Jaden) crash landing on Earth many years after it has become uninhabitable to humans.

We can’t breathe on the planet anymore, but baboons, buffalo and birds are fine and dandy.

Will Smith’s character is injured, so he directs his son from a tattered ship as Jaden must battle the elements, avoid the big monster their ship was carrying, and find the rescue beacon. Nothing in this movie works, from the ridiculous made-up accents the characters use, to the terrible CGI animals trying to eat Jaden. Will Smith’s performance is the dullest thing he has ever put to film, with Jaden being the overacting opposite. It’s remarkable to me that people keep giving Shyamalan money to make movies. Will the producers with the green learn their lesson after this one? I doubt it.

Will this become a franchise like Will Smith had intended? I doubt that, too.

The Bling Ring

Fast & Furious 6

This franchise could’ve ended about five films ago, and I would’ve been fine with that. Vin Diesel mumbles his way through another fast car movie, this one with some admittedly fine driving stunts. The plot involves some nonsense about Vin and his crew (including Paul Walker) going after some other bad guy driver who’s threatening the world. He also has Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) working for him, even though she blew up in a prior movie.

Dwayne Johnson is in there, too, as a badass lawman, and future installments will involve another one of my least favorite action stars if the post-credit footage is any indicator. I like to watch good pyrotechnics, but I hate it when just about everybody in these films opens their mouths. It looks like these movies will never end, and Michelle Rodriguez will never die.

The Internship

When I heard Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson would be reuniting for a film after their blessed Wedding Crashers, I got justifiably excited. I like when Vaughn is in profane mode, and he made Wilson tolerable in their first go round. However, what we get here is just a terrible two-hour commercial for Google that dumbs down and sanitizes the duo. They play a couple of salesmen who lose their gigs when watches become obsolete. For reasons that are never really explained, the Vaughn character hones in on Google during his job search and convinces the Wilson character to compete with him in an intern contest, with the winners getting jobs with the hallowed Google. Vaughn, who co-wrote the screenplay, allegedly worked closely with Google when creating the film so, needless to say, there aren’t a lot of profanities and nude shots in this flick. Instead we get family-friendly Vaughn and Wilson, with the results being boring, unfunny and embarrassing.

Iron Man 3

Shane Black, director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (starring Robert Downey Jr. in his best performance ever) and writer of such action classics as Lethal Weapon, gets his second directorial chore and delivers big time.

Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) is now an insomniac suffering from panic attacks after the events of The Avengers, and he faces a new adversary in The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). Stark is a little bit shaky in this one, and that gives the film a dark, comic edge. Gwyneth Paltrow gets a little more screen time as Pepper Potts, while Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall show up as mysterious

Man of Steel

Director Zack Snyder and co-producer Christopher Nolan reboot Superman, and the result is a little disappointing. Henry Cavill puts on the tights—minus the red underwear—and does little else, giving us the dullest Superman to date. The whole endeavor is an effort to take Superman to darker Batman-like territories, and that’s a big mistake. Superman can be in a dark flick, but he must rise above the darkness, not whine about his mom all of the time. There’s a lot of whiz-bang in this film, and some of it is impressive, but lots of it is just noise and things smacking into one another.

Michael Shannon provides a terrific villain in Zod, while Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner do well as Superman’s two dads. I just couldn’t get into the depiction of Superman as a joyless, humorless stud. As for Amy Adams as Lois Lane, she isn’t given much of anything to do. This is going to make tons of money, and Snyder is lined up for a sequel already. I hope he gets it right the next time.

Based on a true series of robberies where some Southern California teens robbed the likes of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, Sofia Coppola’s fifth directorial effort is a biting satire featuring fun work from Emma Watson in a performance reminiscent of Nicole Kidman in To Die For. The ensemble, including Katie Chang, Israel Broussard and Taissa Farmiga, do a good job of portraying vacuous teens obsessed with celebrities and what those celebrities are wearing. When they find out a star is out of town, they go to their house and basically go shopping. At one point, they go to Paris Hilton’s, shot on location at Hilton’s real house. In typical Coppola style, the film looks great and boasts a terrific soundtrack. It’s a return to form for the director after the sleepy misfire Somewhere.

scientific types. Downey Jr. is as fun as ever here, and Black knows just what to do with him. Black is also pretty snappy with the action scenes, which don’t disappoint. If this is the last of Downey Jr.’s solo Iron Man films, he’s going out on a good note.

It’s official: Jeff Nichols, who gave us the brilliant Take Shelter, is a writer/director who stands among the best of them. Matthew McConaughey plays the title character, a chipped-tooth, wild-haired drifter living in a boat in a tree along the Mississippi. Two kids, Ellis and Neckbone (Tye Sheridan of The Tree of Life, and Jacob Lofland) stumble upon him, and find themselves part of his strange and dangerous world. McConaughey is just catching wave after wave lately, and this is his best one yet. He makes Mud a little scary, yet charming and cunning. Sheridan and Lofland are terrific as the young friends who should probably stay away from guys living in boats in trees. The cast also boasts Reese Witherspoon, Michael Shannon and Sam Shepard—all of them equally great. Ladies and gentleman, we have the year’s first “excellent” movie. Jesus, it took long enough.

Now You See Me

For those of you hankering for another magician movie after The Incredible Burt Wonderstone … here it is! A Vegas magician act called the Four Horseman (Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco) concludes their show by seemingly robbing a bank in France through teleportation. An FBI agent (Mark Ruffalo) and an Interpol detective (Melanie Laurent) investigate, and we snore.

Morgan Freeman is on hand as a man who makes a living debunking magic, as is Michael Caine as a millionaire bankrolling the Horseman.

It all amounts to nonsense, with a lot of swirling cameras and stupid fights involving playing cards and paper cuts. The big reveals are silly, and much of what happens on the magic side is never explained. Eisenberg delivers one of the year’s more annoying performances.

This Is the End

Seth Rogen and writing partner Evan Goldberg make a strong directorial debut with this crazed stoner comedy in which Rogen and a bunch of his pals play themselves as the world faces the biblical apocalypse.

When Jay Baruchel comes to LA to hang with Rogen, he finds himself reluctantly attending a party at James Franco’s new house. The Rapture happens, the ground opens up, and a bunch of celebrities go to Hell, leaving Rogen, Franco, Baruchel, Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill and Danny McBride to fight for the leftover Milky Way candy bar. All of the participants are in top form, with the laughs never slowing down. The movie is also a pretty good horror film in its own right, with lots of gore for those of you who like that sort of thing. Among the oddities are Michael Cera as a coke-snorting pervert, Hill getting possessed after a romantic evening with Satan, and Danny McBride eating people. The film is as crazy as anything to come out of mainstream Hollywood in a long time, and a welcomed return to form for Rogen and Franco.

On the road Jeff Jones You know the story of the traveling soul singer—who packs up his guitar and hits the clubs, sometimes even by Laura Davis the street corners, night after night, with no agenda but to simply sing a tune with some legitimate funk and a little heartbreak? He doesn’t ask for much in return, maybe just some spare change to buy a couple rounds.

It’s the nomadic lifestyle that he loves—along with the music—that tugs him along, encouraging his groove to not stay grounded in any one spot.

me if I went to someone’s house, and it didn’t have music. That would have been weird.”

After his service, Jones initially decided to go back to school for photography, moving to the sweltering heat of Arizona State University. He bailed out 18 credits short of a diploma, admitting that the high temperatures finally broke him down—and sent him running for a quick cure: the cold weather of Colorado.

The change ended up being a milestone in Jones’ music career, for it was here that he first started to really take music and songwriting seriously, viewing it as a career as opposed to a hobby.

“I wrote a lot of music then, but I wasn’t very good at it, and I started out playing only a handful of cover songs,” Jones says.

But one can only take so many requests for “Free Bird,” and Jones took to the pen and paper as well as he had to guitar, soon filling up his own song catalogues. Songwriting is currently an art the musician prides himself on—choosing only to do covers for the private events he books on occasion.

“If you don’t have any originals, it’s tough,” Jones says of the competition. “You just gotta write a bunch of songs, and if you love them, other people will love them, too … and nothing feels better than when someone calls one out.”

Jones bid Colorado farewell once the traveling bug blew in. But his next move took him by surprise, bringing about not only new scenery—but also the most permanent residence he’s had to date. He met his wife, had a son and planted some roots in Incline—going on 13 years now.

That’s not to say the world traveler doesn’t still get bitten. Jones scratches that itch by traveling with his band, Jeff Jones and the Bank—a group comprised of three Italian musicians he met on one of his travels—twice a year, for a month straight. His shows span Europe and the States.

“I’ll never stop traveling,” Jones promises. “It’s everything. Some of my best songs were written because of those life experiences.” Ω

This was the story of Incline, Calif., based singer/songwriter Jeff Jones. Originally from New Mexico, Jones got his traveling shoes fitted early in life, moving 17 times by the time he was in high school. The tendency not to stay rooted stuck around after graduation, encouraging Jones to enlist in the army’s artillery force, where he was based in Germany. It was this first experience overseas that allowed he and a few army buddies to do some soul searching.

“We would just spend all our money traveling,” Jones admits.

“We’d get to wherever we wanted to go and then just busk for beer money. We called ourselves the ‘Modern Day Hobos.’”

It also got him to take up guitar, an instrument fairly new to the singer, who grew-up in a Baptist household full of music, primarily keys.

“Someone was always on piano,” Jones recalls. “And there was a lot of singing. It would have surprised

Campfire Friday: Chautauqua If you missed the Nevada Humanities Chautauqua earlier this week, you’ll get a chance to see some of the area’s youngest Chautauquans portray historical characters around the campfire this Friday, June 28, as part of Galena Creek’s Campfire Fridays summertime series.

Performers from the Silver State Young Chautauqua will portray a historical figure, recite a monologue and answer audience questions all while in character. Some of the notable people they’ll represent include Rosa Parks, Louis Pasteur and John Wayne. Marshmallow roasting will begin at 7:30 p.m., followed by the Chautauqua at 8 p.m. Bring flashlights, blankets or lowbacked chairs and dress warmly. U.S. Open of Watercross For much of the year, the Sparks Marina is a little oasis of tranquility nestled between the Western Village casino and the Outlets at Legends shopping center. It’s typically frequented by young families with toddlers in tow, people taking a lunchtime walk around the manmade lake or the occasional fisherman waiting for an unsuspecting trout to take the bait.

This weekend, however, the sounds of swooshing, splashing personal water craft will add a little excitement to the air when the Hydro-Turf Watercross National Tour brings its eighth annual U.S. Open of Watercross to the Rail City. The event combines closed-course racing and freestyle competition featuring some of the best watercross athletes from across the country and abroad, including competitors from Australia, Columbia, Indonesia and Kuwait.

Athletes will ride their personal water crafts, like those made by Jet Ski, SeaDoo, etc., and compete for the U.S. Open title and a $12,000 purse. Racing begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, June 29-30, with a special Roasting of the Champions event at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The wet and wild action takes place at Sparks Marina Park, 300 Howard St., Sparks.

I’m a single dad of three children, who are my world. For three years, I’ve dated a woman with grown children. I proposed and she accepted. Two days later, she ended everything via text and hasn’t spoken to me since. She claimed she wants to come first in someone’s life, and my kids take priority. Didn’t she figure this out earlier?

Three weeks after she broke things off, I learned she was “in love” with an older rich guy and that she’s spreading lies about me. We had a great relationship, and using her words, were “total soulmates.” Now she tells people how miserable she was. Even her friends are confused.

What a lucky lady. No sooner did she realize that her current soulmate was no longer working for her than another popped up, right in the same town and everything. The truth is, even nice, well-meaning people can go floating along thinking they’re in a relationship they want until their partner says, “Hey, wanna make it for realsies?” Chances are, your girlfriend resented your prioritizing your kids but just sucked it up—until you got down on one knee and presented her with the fork in the road.

A partner’s use of the term “total soulmates!” suggests that one is either dating a 14-year-old or somebody about as emotionally and romantically mature. The idea of soulmates actually traces back to Plato. He wrote about a “symposium” (ancient Greek for

“kegger”) at which an apparently tanked Aristophanes claimed there were once three sexes—male, female and this weird he/she thing, round like a soccer ball, with four hands, four feet and two faces. According to Ari, humans got power-hungry and attacked the gods. The gods were pissed. Zeus punished the humans by hacking the he/shes in two—male and female—and after Apollo reshaped them to look like we do now, the gods dispersed them, compelling them to forever be searching for their “other half.”

Back here in the real world, a person who believes she’s your soulmate is actually a flight risk. Social psychologist Dr. C. Raymond Knee has explored the effect on relationships from “destiny belief”—the belief that people have “soulmates,” that relationships are either fated to be or they’re not—versus “growth belief,” the belief that successful relationships don’t just fall out of the sky; they take work. Partners with growth belief think that relationships are “cultivated and developed” over time, that problems are a natural part of them and that working through them is a way to build a closer and stronger bond. A destiny believer, on the other hand, tends to see problems as a sign she’s in the wrong place and as reason to bail. Ω

Take that to heart, Aries! You are pretty adept at getting things launched, but you’ve got more to learn about the art of stopping.

Sometimes you finish prematurely. Other times you sort of disappear without officially bringing things to a close. Now would be an excellent time to refine your skills.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “The prob-

lem with quotes on the Internet is that it’s hard to determine whether or not they are genuine,” so said Joan of Arc back in 1429, right before she helped lead French troops in the battle of Patay. Just kidding! Joan of Arc never had the pleasure of surfing the web, of course, since it didn’t exist until long after she died. But I was trying to make a point that will be useful for you to keep in mind, Taurus, which is: Be skeptical of both wild claims and mild claims. Stay alert for seemingly interesting leads that are really time-wasting half-truths. Be wary for unreliable gossip that would cause an unnecessary ruckus.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): French

impressionist painter Claude Monet loved to paint water lilies, and he did so over and over again for many years. Eventually, he created about 250 canvases that portrayed these floating flowers. Should we conclude that he repeated himself too much? Should we declare that he was boringly repetitive?

Or might we wonder if he kept finding new delights in his comfortable subject? Would we have enough patience to notice that each of the 250 paintings shows the water lilies in a different kind of light, depending on the weather and the season and the time of day?

I vote for the latter view, and suggest that you adopt a similar approach to the familiar things in your life during the coming weeks.

If I build it John Martinson is technical adviser for a company called Biohome. They’ve made innovative homes that people have been living in for nearly a decade, but right now, they’re exploring other applications for the technology. He’s a congenial guy, excited with the challenges, and he’s looking for someone with a little property to set up an experiment. And the best part? The collaborator gets to keep the results.

What’s this thing you’re involved in building?

We call it a growhouse. There are greenhouses, but we call ours a growhouse because we don’t have anything to do with those glass buildings called greenhouses. This is a well-insulated, controlled-environment structure in which we expect to grow things 12 months out of the year. ... We have a thing called a water window. I’m going to give you an abbreviation. The five letters of the abbreviation spell the word SWIFT. So keep in mind the letters to the word swift: Spherical Water Instrument For Transmission.

Transmission, that means light transmission?

Absolutely. Now, imagine a clear plastic basketball. Ours is a little bigger, but visualize a clear plastic basketball filled with water.

Recently, I was in a little gas/ burger/coffee pit/piss stop of a town called Kettleman City. It’s on Interstate 5 in California, on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, at the intersection of 46 and 5. It’s a place that gets scorching hot in the summer. Hell, that burg gets roasted in the spring. I was driving around the various burger joints, looking for a tree under which to park and do some phone calling/ texting. The pickings were very slim.

Saplings and stop signs weren’t gonna get it done. Finally, I found a little tree at the Taco Bell that was adequate and unoccupied, so I hung there for the next 20 minutes, being a good citizen and not doing all my texting on the road by bellowing at Siri.

Anyway, my point—in the future, a future that’s looking more and more like it’s going to be warmer and warmer and sunnier and sunnier—there might well be a lot of money in—shade.

Seriously. Shade might just become a really big deal. And even a viable industry. I know that little hellburg Kettleman City sure could have used some. I couldn’t help but think that if a burger joint called Shady’s was there, and it was a place with a huge, cool-looking shade structure under which customers could park, that place would do nothing but kick Mickey D’s, Jack’s and Carl’s collective butts, because those places all feature your basic standard cheap noshade parking lot. People are drawn to shade like they’re drawn to natural water features like creeks and lakes. Businesses in the future just may get an edge by paying attention to this reality. In fact, I saw this attraction in action in a town that’s very aware of solar bombardment.

It was about 10 years ago, when our camp at Burning Man erected a giant tent structure on the playa.

Not a tent to sleep in, but really more like a large canopy. It covered a lot of ground and made quite a |

What we’re saying is, “Free to a good home.”

What we want to do is build this on a suitable public place. So people going by can see this and become curious about it, but if someone will in effect give us free rent on a space for 12 months, we will put up the dome, and we will begin growing things in it. At the end of the 12 months, we give it to them. It becomes their dome. If they gave us the space to do it, they get to keep the dome. And if they don’t want it, we’ll take the dome down. But if they’re in any way interested in gardening and agriculture, they’ll want the dome themselves, and it’s theirs.

And the steel-rebar framework will be buried in 6-to-8 inches of foam, and steel-rebar framework is sitting on a concrete foundation, so you have this hemispherical building, which is very resistant to strong winds because there’s no flat place on the building for the hurricane or the tornado to get a hold. So the air moves smoothly over the outside of the hemispheric surface, but the hemispheric surface is tied to the ground and its concrete foundation with the steel rebar.

Ultimately, that’s the plan [for humans to live within]. That’s the future. In the past, we have built these, and people certainly are living in these domes. We build what we call Foam Dome Homes. But now the proposal is to build a Foam Dome Home for tomatoes to live in. We want to build a dome, illuminated by these SWIFT lights, environmentally controlled, because that foam insulation is just a wonderful material to control the temperature inside the domes.

People would just sort of get sucked in by its innate, elemental attractiveness, visibly swerving in from the street to say hello, hang out, look weird, swap stories, have a cold one, but mainly just to get the hell away from that relentless star that was pounding the juices out of them out in the streets. We didn’t need free pancakes or free beer or free baby wipes to meet new burners. All we had to do was provide shade.

So if you want your playa place to be popular this year, you can always roll with the simple pleasure that is shade. Make some. You’ll be able to sit back and watch people get sucked into your cool darkness.

And don’t be surprised if, in 2020, you see a company called Shadeco kicking ass on the NYSE. Ω

and it still does that every July when people from near and far pack into Wingfield Park each day. But now it’s all over the Reno and Sparks community, and, as their website suggests, Reno truly is Artown in July. Nothing says summer more than Artown.

As someone who was raised in the dreaded heat of Southern Nevada, I was surprised that Reno—you know, the place from that show, Reno 911?—had a month of arts and culture-centered events. After living here for a few years, I’m still impressed by the undertaking that is Artown. There are hundreds of events going on throughout the day and night, and I admit that it’s a little daunting.

So to help you navigate through all the awesome events that make up Artown, we compiled our annual Artown guide. There’s a day-by-day guide to help you start planning out where you want to be throughout the month that covers everything from dance performances to art classes and projects. We’ve also included stories about each of the Rollin’ on the River performers and some information about their opening acts. remembers going to Artown events and the Rollin’ on the River series over the years and watching many talented musicians perform, including her father, Scott Myer, and her uncle, Fred Myer.

“It’s something I remember going to growing up, and my dad was in a band for a long time and so was my uncle,” Myer said. “They played it in their band. It’s a Reno staple. It’s all ages, and it’s a really uplifting event for people to go to, which I really support.”

Myer said she loves that the Rollin’ on the River series is free to the public and explained that she feels honored to be a part of it and promoting arts and culture in Reno.

“

“I think Artown is a really integral part of summer, and I think arts and culture get overlooked a lot of times in the mass media of Reno,” Myer said. “So I think it’s important that it continues, and I love being a part of it.”

After being on The Voice, with Adam Levine of Maroon 5 as her coach, Myer felt lucky that Reno rallied behind her and is happy to give back to Reno with the help of the Rollin’ on the River series during Artown.

“I love helping change the outside opinion of Reno on a national scale,” Myer said. “And I think Artown is part of that because there’s a lot of tourists here during the summer. I

think it’s a really great way to give back to the community and just support the arts because there’s a diminishing of that in school and in state funding.”

Myer released her new solo, five-track album, Articles of Luminous Nature, in April at Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, with about 1,500 people in attendance. This is her first project as a solo artist, and her sound has changed and matured.

“I’ve recently delved into a new genre.

I used to play like soul rock, and I wanted to experiment with electronic music,” Myer said. “So I’ve been doing that, and I have a new band that’s together, and they’re really awesome. It’s some of the area’s best musicians.”

Myer titles her new genre as “electronic soul or future soul.”

“It’s kind of a mix between Erykah Badu and Florence and the Machine and Björk,” she said.

Because Myer wrote all her own lyrics and music for this album, it feels very real and personal.

In her album note, Myer writes, “Here is a small sliver of my heart in the form of pressed plastic and other random materials. I hope it pleases you. I feel that what drives us in life is connection, and I hope this album makes you feel more connected to the people you interact with, and to yourself.”

Myer toured her new album in May and after her Rollin’ on the River performance on July 5 at Wingfield Park, she will continue touring during the month of August.

The tour will be primarily in the West Coast with some “jetting over to Montana and Idaho a little bit.” The tour is not finalized yet, but she plans to cover a great deal of the West Coast.

“We’re planning as far north as Vancouver and as far south as L.A., if everything goes as planned,” Myer said.

when it comes to Hot Club Sandwich, drawing from French and American jazz, Western swing, gypsy guitar, Argentinian, Mexican and Brazilian influences, played by guys from Seattle and a homesteading drummer from Alaska.

The music itself is the story of society’s underprivileged outcasts, but this band brings in other instruments not typically associated with jazz: the mandolin and fiddle.

“Mandolin used to be incredibly popular,” says the band’s musician Matt Sircely, adding that it was more popular than guitar for a time. “It was one of the people’s instruments.

In the latter part of the last century there were mandolin orchestras in every town, and they would play in harmony.”

In the ’70s the instrument came back, and Sircely followed the trend of ripping explosive riffs.

“The mandolin has two strings [two for every one on a guitar], and it is kind of like the right hand has to operate the combination of a sewing machine and a chain saw,” he says. “It requires dexterity and strength.”

He teaches mandolin to people from all

over the world in New York. So, watching Sircely solo in Hot Club Sandwich will be like witnessing the master of “weird.”

“It’s kind of a weird instrument,” he said. “There is not a whole lot of mandolin doctrine out there.”

Another unusual element of Hot Club Sandwich’s jazz is singing, augmented by the drummer who stands up and plays a snare and high hat. “People really relate to the singing, it makes it a lot of fun,” Sircely says.

“We have a drummer who is really a stellar vocalist.”

They’ve brought this version of folk jazz around the world for the past decade, and people usually catch on to the hoot right away. It wasn’t until recently that they arrived in a land-locked, unemployment-stricken land, and the message was lost.

“We played In Yerington, Nevada, for a program that buses kids from schools that are pretty hard-up from way out in the country,” Sircely said, recalling the kids’ blank stares. “And they were all just sitting there, watching us play, and I said to the kids: ‘You know, jazz has roots in the black church where the audience is really supportive, and it is appropriate to call out a response to the preacher.”

He says he was encouraging the kids “to respond, be vocal, feel free, be a part of it.”

When Hot Club Sandwich broke back into song, so did the kids.

“They took to that cue,” he recalls. “They started making a lot of racket and clapping out of time. That is really the point of it all.

The audience is as engaged as the musicians are.” Later on in the day, he said community members came up to him and said it really lifted their spirits.

For the Reno show he is looking forward to playing tunes from past generations and faster beats for younger audiences, too. With such broad cultural and historical appeal, based on freedom, infused with unusual jazz elements, Sircely is hoping to engage an audience, “that will provide the energetic exchange that keeps it all going ... to prompt the soloist as they are starting to get into it.”

“Engage!” he says, “Clap for solos!

Respond to something that inspires you! It is not stodgy music.”

Hot Club Sandwich will play Friday, July 12 at 5:30 p.m. in Wingfield park. The band will include Mark Rubin, bass; Matt Sircely, mandolin; Joseph Mascorella, drums and Kevin Connor on gypsy guitar. Ω

for the annual community concert series Rollin’ on the River, who better to tap than a Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute?

The original CCR not only has a 1988 album of the same name, but the legendary band’s original drummer, and current drummer in the second installment, Creedence Clearwater Revisited, Doug Clifford, lives right here in Reno. The dots all connect, and luckily, so did Chicago-based tributers Blue Moon Swamp’s lead singer Dan McGuinness, and the park festival’s planner, RN&R General Manager/Publisher John Murphy.

“For a couple of years now we’ve been talking back and forth,” McGuinness says of connecting with Murphy. “He’s a fan of the music, and we liked the event—it’s very fitting for us.”

Coming all the way from the Midwest to play at the month-long series, McGuinness—who says this will be the group’s first time performing locally— and his fellow members are taking the opportunity to mini tour, with planned stops in Utah and California.

“About 97 percent of our shows are usually out of town,” McGuinness concedes, adding that collectively the members of Blue Moon Swamp are primarily travelers for the tribute band alone—they each spend their time at home playing in separate original music outfits.

“I have an original band [on the side]— creatively and artistically, it’s satisfying because people still come to hear my songs, and that’s great,” he admits, in regard to the balance of performing both original and cover material.

While McGuinness was always a fan of CCR, he confesses he never intended to make a living off the music, it just sort of happened that way. Living in Arizona as a kid; McGuinness was a late bloomer

to the realm of music—not picking-up a guitar until he was 18. But once he had his music legs under him, the natural performer, who doubles as a sportscaster and actor back home in Chicago, took to his early crowds at the open mics where he’d perform. And they in turn, encouraged him to take it one step further.

“People would tell me to be in a tribute band,” McGuinness admits. “I got approached about it a lot. When I came out to Chicago, I decided to put a foot in the water and test it out, do a couple shows— then people started calling, and it just kept building … tribute bands are really popular right now.”

Part of the automatic appeal could be attributed to McGuinness’ physical similarities to CCR’s legendary singer, John Fogerty. It’s easy to transport yourself back in time—visualizing being front row at one of the original CCR concerts during its hay day in the late ’60s-early ’70s—when McGuinness prances onstage, donning a plaid shirt and bandana—shaggy hair flowing. He’s a prime candidate for being the missing Fogerty brother (the one John and original guitarist Tom Fogerty forgot).

“I’ve heard that I look like him after shows,” McGuinness admits. And when it comes to the performance aspect, he really channels the Fogerty within. “I’m a working actor when I’m on stage, and people respond very well to that. You gotta respect the audience.”

Included in that respect is giving the people what they want—which is, in regard to a tribute band, the hits.

“If you go out there and don’t play ‘Proud Mary,’ you might get a shoe thrown at you,” McGuinness says with a laugh. “There’s a reason [the songs] have been around this long—and we acknowledge that. We’re good listeners—even though we’re the ones providing stuff to listen to.”

B

Soulful and moody, it encompasses pain, struggle and triumphs over obstacles.

For award-winning blues singer Janiva Magness, coming to terms with her own struggles has been an important part of her musical career.

And in return, creating music has been a healing process.

After experiencing personal tragedy as a teenager—losing both of her parents—Magness was placed in several foster homes before becoming pregnant at 17 and giving her daughter up for adoption. She has since reconnected with her daughter, and now serves as an advocate for children in the foster care system. She’s also an ambassador for Foster Care Alumni of America.

Magness believes that musicians should be involved in a cause.

“It is important to be of service,” she says. “I believe this to my soul. Sometimes to do it and take no credit, it’s freeing in a way and good for the soul. And I believe we have a soul that must be cared for. [We need to] care for our own souls and for the souls of others. If we all can do just a little bit more of that, the world will be better and our experience of each other will be, too.”

Advocacy for others also helped Magness find a way to channel stress into something positive.

“It takes the focus off of me and puts it on helping someone else, someone else’s troubles instead of my own,” says Magness. “And it helps me gain better perspective just about 100 percent of the time. … What happened to me makes a lot more sense if I can use the experiences to help others still in a struggle along the way. Those events of my youth no longer define me, just part of the landscape now most days, and that is huge, especially if you are a person still in those kind of personal battles. We need to hear that message and see the living witness.”

This belief is apparent in her music—her most recent album, released last year, is called Stronger For It. She tours around the world, including a notable trip in 2008 to Iraq and Kuwait, where she performed for American soldiers.

Magness discovered blues at a young age, inspired by the albums in her father’s record collection and by catching a performance of Otis Rush in a nightclub. After studying engineering and working in a record studio, Magness found a talent in singing and went on to form a band and later going solo. Her albums feature a mix of original songs and covers.

“I am fairly new at the practice of songwriting and consequently pretty nervous about it, which I think is fine,” she says. “I think it keeps me

honest, which is very important to me. But the big challenge seems to be getting out of the way and letting the creative process unfold.”

Magness refers to Dave Darling, her collaborator and producer, to help her find her voice. “I trust him, and he gets me and respects me. Those two things are paramount, especially being so new at the craft of it.”

Putting together an album is a “superstitious” process for Magness.

“I don’t like to plan too much,” she says. “I think it impedes the muse, and I believe in her.

In that same way, I believe songs come to me, the right ones come through several channels over the course of time. I am always looking and squirreling away material and new song ideas, or stories that I need to tell.”

And when looking for a song to cover, Magness looks for “a connection, a storyline and melody that moves me. One I can bring myself to, so I can tell the truth. Otherwise I find no point to singing it. Capiche?”

She spent five years in Los Angeles before moving her commanding vocal chords to Reno. Now, Gatsby is a powerhouse, husky-voiced rock singer/songwriter who brings passion to her music. She has a voice that haunts and commands the attention of the room. Friend and fellow musician Whitney Myer described Gatsby’s voice as “gorgeous” and “killer” and went on to say, “She has one of those voices where you’re immediately drawn into whatever world she’s creating.”

Paired together, Gatsby and Myer should make for an awesome show in the park.

All four members of the band sing at different points. Each of the band members have diverse backgrounds, but they all have one thing in common: extensive histories as musicians. Elkins and White are childhood friends who have been playing together on and off since they were young, and both have written original songs for the group. Wh en did yo u co me i n t o Ar town? A nd how l o n g h a s it been go i ng o n?

Artown started in 1996, and it started because there was nothing happening downtown. Casinos were closing. There was no retail, not many restaurants. People were not coming downtown, so a group of business and city leaders decided to use arts and culture as a tool to bring people back downtown. And the first year, 30,000 people showed up, so they knew they had something. I joined Artown in 2001 as the festival manager and then in 2003, I was named the executive director.

Why d id yo u get invo lved wi t h Ar t ow n ?

I’ve been involved with the arts since I was 3 years old, so it seemed like a natural part of my evolution.

I had my own business teaching children’s dance classes and then I ran the ballet company here in town.

That was how I got my feet wet in the nonprofit industry. And after I

left there, Karen Craig from Artown called me and asked if I would like to join this organization. It just seemed like a really good fit.

W h at ’s d i f f e r e n t a bou t t h i s ye a r ’s A r town ?

Every Artown is totally different from the one before, the one before that, and the one that’s going to come next. And Artown is huge. I mean, we’re all over the Truckee Meadows. It used to be basically downtown, but now it has spread out all over. The footprint has grown tremendously. The number of people coming down to our event is tremendous. It can’t really grow bigger, but it becomes more important to our community every year. It becomes more significant on a deeper level as opposed to just getting bigger. I think that I’m starting to notice that change.

I also know that we are really trying to focus on who we are as a community right now and staying relevant to who we are as

a community. We’re not the same community we were 20 years ago.

The makeup of the community is different. People’s behaviors are different now. You’ve got a lot of grandparents coming down to the park with their grandchildren, and you’ve got a lot of people who are from different cultural backgrounds coming into this community. And we want to make sure that all those cultures are celebrated. We want to make sure that new cultures are introduced to our community. We really try to focus on that when we create our festival, and this year, we have what I think is the best opening nights we’ve ever had. This year is Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon’s 40th anniversary. This amazing group of musicians—Corey Glover, Melvin Gibbs, Karl Denson and a bunch of others—are coming together, and they’re going to play the album in its entirety. And opening for them is Jelly Bread, so it’s really nice. We always try to have our local and national or international

juxtaposition of talent. So I think that is going to be huge this year.

Is t h at w hat you’ r e m os t exci ted ab out?

You know what I’m always so excited for are the ah-ha moments that happen that you just don’t know are going to happen. I’m very excited for the World Music Series. I’m very excited for our Monday Night Music Series—on the 15th we have the Glenn Miller Orchestra coming, and we’re doing that as a tribute to Roy Powers who was one of the trustees of the Robert Z. Hawkins Foudnation.

He passed away last year, so that’s going to be a very important night to our community because he was a great artist and just a really great person in the community. And our closing night, we’re bringing in the legendary Shuggie Otis. I’m really excited about that. We’re bringing in Pete Escovedo, who’s a Latin jazz percussionist. He’s coming here with his daughter, Sheila E.

Sheila E. was the percussionist for Prince. The father and daughter are coming together, and they’ve never come together in Northern Nevada.

I’m excited for our Family Series.

One of the really great things we’re bringing is Story Pirates, which is a group of improvisation artists from Los Angeles, and we’ve reached out into the school district here and children have written stories.

They’re going to review those stories and act them out on stage at the Family Series. So really, two of our students in the Family Series are going to become playwrights overnight. I’m really excited about that. Discover the Arts is every single weekday for 6 to 12 year olds.

We have them discovering all kinds of art, and they get to do projects with recyclable materials. … What makes me excited is that I really believe we have put on this festival offering something for everyone.

It’s not just one thing. It’s the fact that anybody in this community can get excited about something at this festival, and that’s really the goal.

What’ s your favor i te par t of your job her e?

My favorite job is being able to make a difference to the community that I live in. Without Artown, July would be July, right?

And I get to help make a whole month in this town, this city be ignited. Even if people don’t come down to Artown, everybody knows that it’s happening. Everybody’s encouraged and enthusiastic about it. Everybody loves July because it’s Artown, whether you’re down here every day or you’re down here once in the month, whatever it is—everybody knows that Reno is Artown in July. And that’s the part that makes me most proud and makes me so grateful to be able to have this job.

What’ s the most d i ffi cul t par t of i t al l ?

S o h ow do yo u go a b o u t plan ning al l of t hi s a n d ch oos ing who t o p e r fo r m ?

It’s a lengthy process. I start typically in September. We try to get a little bit of a rest in August. I go to a conference in the end of August, actually. I really network with a lot of people who do what we do, other festivals around the country, other people on the west coast that do presenting. And we start working with local artists in November … if you look at the board behind you, that’s how we put it together. I mean, it’s all with stickies. It’s very old fashioned really because it’s all done in patterns and rhythms. And I network with different people I know and find out which artists are relevant, which artists have new projects, which artists are touring, which artists are around but haven’t been around for a while, which projects are exciting, which artists are hot right now, and can we bring them in? I mean, what is so great

is that some of these really great, really interesting artists—Red Baraat is one of them this year, amazing fusion with bhangra and all kinds of stuff—we get to do them as a free event. Our community can come down at no cost to them and experience a new artist. Whereas, in other communities, you have to buy tickets to Red Baraat. How many people are going to buy tickets to something they don’t even know? We have the opportunity just to put it out there and have all these people get to know a new artist. It’s really great.

It’s really probably the funnest job in the whole wide world, but right now, in June, the pressure is huge.

On closing night, they came to me and told me the story. They gathered together in Wingfield Park about three times a week during the month of July and bonded again because of Artown, and they hadn’t spoken in years. So is that not worth the whole job right there? You know? You hear these magical stories of how a park like Wingfield Park in downtown really connects our community, whether it’s friends, families, meeting new people, whatever it is.

It’s magical.

I would say the most difficult part actually is to make sure that I program the festival—even though it’s the best part, it’s also the most difficult part—is making sure I program the festival for this community to be the dream festival for this community. And that’s difficult because I think Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon is going to be fantastic. We’ll see on the first of July, right? So the most difficult part is programming it and making sure you’ve done it right.

And that always sort of falls out when it’s happening.

Any thi ng el se that p eop l e shoul d know b efor e comi ng to Ar tow n?

If you have not come to Artown, come on down—parking is a perceived problem. It’s not a real problem for the most part because it’s in the evening. There’s something for everyone, and you definitely will have a tremendous experience if you come down to Artown. The other thing I would like to say is that there’s the stage, and there’s the dance floor. And then the first area has always been low-back seating and blanket seating. We’re changing it up this year, and this [first] little area here is for blankets only. Then the next area is for low-back chairs, lowto-the-ground seating, and then all the rest is any kind of seating you want. It can be blankets, high chairs, anything. We’re just doing three tiers instead of two. Ω

and it never gets old, unlike every other part of us,” said Lynette Schweigert, co-founder and director of the nonprofit organization Moments of Memory.

Schweigert’s father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease seven days after her mother died in her arms of breast cancer in January 1994.

She began caring for her father, along with his 125 sheep and 17 Afghan hounds, and soon started devoting her life to Alzheimer’s care.

She started out with a social club where patients would come and have fun with people in the same situation they were in—giving the caregivers three hours a week to themselves.

Now, she does art classes for Alzheimer’s and other dementia patients—and teaches caregivers how to do art with their loved one—through her nonprofit organization. The gallery of residents’ art at Arbors Memory Care Community (AMCC) will be open throughout the month of July for Artown daily from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Greeting cards with reproductions of resident’s art and framed prints will be available for a donation to benefit the program. And on July 13 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., AMCC and Moments of Memory will host Memories in the Garden Art,

where anyone can come out and make their own garden art to take home.

Schweigert has done weekly classes at AMCC for five years now, which I got to visit and help with.

“I don’t really teach them, they teach me.

Seriously,” Schweigert said. “And, as you could see today, there’s singing, there’s laughing, there’s joking, and literally, this is the only time they do that because they’re all focused on the same thing. And I think this helps distract them from the sadness of forgetting.”

During Schweigert’s class, the residents of AMCC talked with Schweigert about what they saw in the abstract paintings they made in the previous class, if the paintings should be vertical or horizontal and then cut the paintings into mats to frame self-portraits to be made the next class. All the while the residents were happy—with one resident’s favorite band, the Beach Boys, playing in the background.

For those with Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of dementia, a sense of self worth and independence and staying active, physically and mentally, becomes difficult. Stephanie Hanna, AMCC community relations director, explained that doing these art pieces really helps the residents develop these things while she showed me the residents’ artwork framed on the walls throughout the facility and their patio where four pieces of art were blown up on the walls, and the walls were repainted to match the color schemes of the art.

“It creates a really strong sense of independence because this is something they’re doing themselves,” Hanna said. “While Lynette might be providing guidance or inspiration, the artist is doing it themselves, which there’s not much they’re able to do themselves anymore. Art is no fail. They can’t make a bad flower because it’s art, which is great because a lot of times they get really frustrated because they can’t tie their shoe right or they can’t put on their shirt right anymore. But they can make the piece of art right.” Ω

said musician, composer, producer and former Rollins Band bassist Melvin Gibbs. “I’ve kind of done that to a certain extent, but I wanted to present this set of people doing something that none of them normally would do.

And they’re all very excited to do it.”

Gibbs is bringing together a diverse group of musicians to play the opening night performance for Artown on July 1, 7-10 p.m. This year happens to be the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s iconic album, Dark Side of the Moon, and Gibbs has brought them all together to play the album in its entirety.

Changing perceptions seems to be Gibbs’ overarching theme for this performance as he compiled the group of musicians together and tweaks the music, too.

“I think it’s a good match between expanding everybody’s idea of what this set of people would be doing and expanding everybody’s idea of what this music can sound like,” Gibbs said.

The group will be presenting their own interpretation of the Pink Floyd album. Gibbs explained that the original album was meant to be an

“anti-jam record,” being “very short, very concise, very to the point.” Gibbs wants to change that by “put[ting] the jamming back into the record.”

“The ironic thing is that Pink Floyd was kind of known as a jam band before that, and the whole thing of Dark Side is that it’s kind of like their pop record,” Gibbs said. “So I’ve extended out some of the song, and we’re going to be playing the instrumentals a little more. We’re just going to kind of expand out the basic idea of what they were doing.”

On lead vocals, the performance will have Nona Hendryx, solo artist and former member of Labelle—the group that topped the charts with “Lady Marmalade”—and Tre Williams of The Revelations.

Sim Cain, also a former member of the Rollins Band, will be on drums. Two former members of ParliamentFunkadelic, keyboardist George Bernard “Bernie” Worrell, Jr.—who was also in Taking Heads—and guitarist DeWayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight, will also be playing. Karl Denson, saxophone player and former member of Lenny Kravitz’s band, will also be performing in this group.

“Well, it’s an all-star band. It’s a lot of really great people,” Gibbs said. “We’re going to have that kind of crossover vibe—kind of an expansion on the rock style—where we’re more kind of like rock guys, and they’re [Worrell and McKnight] kind of more like— they’re known as funk guys, but they go all over the place. We’re going to expand out the palette of what the

guys did on the original record to reflect more of our personalities.”

Gibbs, never having heard of Artown before, stumbled upon it out after discovering the Nevada Museum of Art while looking up art events in the area.

In the course of events after that, he decided to bring this mixed bag of heavy-hitting musicians to open the month of events.

Gibbs said he’s very excited for the performance and come to Reno. Coincidentally, he—with the rest of the Rollins Band—recorded their album, Weight with the well-known track “Liar,” in South Lake Tahoe, and Gibbs hasn’t been back to the area since.

“We used to go down to Reno on the weekends to hang out, and I haven’t been there really since then,” Gibbs said. “I’m looking forward to checking all that out, and I’m hoping I can create a situation where I can get to the museum because you guys actually have a very interesting museum as well. I’m definitely looking forward to being there in Reno.”

Artown executive director Beth MacMillan expressed her personal excitement for Gibbs and his fellow musicians’ performance on opening night and stated that she thinks it’s going to be the best opening night Artown has ever had.

She also said that she’s happy to have Jelly Bread opening for the performance to showcase the local talent here in Reno as well as the national or international talent of this group of performers.

This event is hosted by Artown and sponsored by City of Reno Arts and Culture Commission and the Reno Ace’s Ballpark. Ω

“Three years ago they outlawed bringing your own alcohol and bringing your own dog to Artown events for liabilities, especially drinking dogs,” said host of Art Paws Landess Witmer. “So we really stand out now because we also do animal rescue at our event, but we also cater it to people coming with their dogs. The biggest thing is our contests. People go crazy for our contests.”

Witmer described herself as a “pet person,” with three dogs, a cat, several horses and fish of her own, and hosts this day as a day for the pets.

“I generally get down on the ground and down on my knees, and dogs will walk up, and I’ll say, ‘Hi. I’m so glad you came. This is your day,’” Witmer said. “And that’s how they feel. You can see it.”

Art Paws is meant as a place where owners can have a fun-filled day with their pets and help people remember how important their pets are.

Part of the funds donated to these organizations comes from the wine and beer tasting that starts at noon. $25 gets you a wine glass with unlimited tastings for the day, and $5 gets you three beer tastings or one large beer. And from 2 to 5 p.m. The Smokin’ Bulldogs will be performing in the park for all Art Paws-goers to enjoy during their wine and beer tasting and pursuing with their pups.

Funds are also raised through raffles that take place every half hour and a large silent auction with prizes such as 500 square feet of sod or a dinner and night stay at the Eldorado.

Many of the nonprofit organizations will be at the event, campaigning for votes or giving out freebies. The first 500 people into Art Paws will receive “doggie bags” donated by Whole Foods and filled with different toys and treats for humans and dogs alike. These bags will also serve as bags to hold any freebies received throughout the event, so if you’re not in the first 500 people Witmer suggests you bring your own bag to gather all the goodies.

In addition to the freebies given out by the 80 to 100 vendors at the event, there will be a demonstration by the Washoe County K9 Unit and Hollywood animal trainer, Joel Silverman will be in attendance to talk to people about training their pets.

The festival will include free paw painting art projects for owners to complete with their pets. The Girl Scouts will help paint pets’ paws to walk on paper so that owners can take home a masterpiece created by their pooch. The contest categories this year will include biggest/ smallest pet head, parent/owner and pet lookalike, most unique trick, best superhero costume and twins/triplets/quads—for identical pets of two or more.

The festival in its entirety is a fundraiser for local pet-related nonprofit organizations.

All the proceeds go in a pot that is divided equally between the three top pet-related nonprofit organizations as decided by a vote from attendees of Art Paws.

“In past years, we’ve funded the Animal Ark, we’ve funded the SPCA, Boxers and Buddies, which is the third most active rescue, only third to the SPCA and the Humane Society,” Witmer said. “U.S. Wolf Refuge is here located in Nevada, which is really cool because they are known throughout the United States, and they’ve garnered our top votes three years in a row.

And Feline Rescue of Northern Nevada won the past two years.”

Janice Dickinson, the self-proclaimed world’s first supermodel, will be hosting the Reno Fashion Show at the Grand Theatre at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino. Doors will open at 8 p.m., and the show will begin at 9 p.m.

This is the second fashion show produced by the Reno production and promotion company, Vanity Entertainment. The first show was last year during Artown with standing room only and about 600 people in attendance.

This show is expected to be larger and to sell out the 1,800-seat theater. It will feature local designers and models.

Brian Aranda, executive producer of Vanity Entertainment, said he was pleased with the way last year’s show went and has high hopes for this year. He said he’s happy to be showing people what they can do here in Reno, and refers to a 12-yearold girl, dressed in her own creation, and her mother, who approached him at last year’s show.

“She hoped to one day be in the Reno Fashion Show, and I think that’s what it’s doing—and we’re hoping it continues to do—inspire people to realize that there is a market for them, there is a platform for them to show their designs. Rather than moving out of Reno, they can do it right here.”

Aranda described the show as “a New York quality type of event” and “the fashion show of fashion shows” and said the show aims to help stimulate the

economy of Reno by promoting the local fashion scene.

“There are a lot of untapped resources that don’t have a platform,” Aranda said.

“We’re hoping to generate our economic rebirth by presenting a platform to people that are interested in the art of fashion.”

The show is for all ages and will feature all types of clothing, ranging from business attire to swimwear. Some of the designers will include swimwear from Ali Strange Designs, chainmaille from Nightkind Productions and bowties from DaNorman Bobino and Angela Gale.

And the models were recruited at Pixella Production Studio on June 15.

After the show, there will be a meet and greet with Dickinson for all in attendance. Aranda said that he is particularly excited to work with Dickinson for this event and said she will

be looking for talent at the event for her next season of Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency.

“Janice will be back on the screen with her new series, so this is an opportunity for her to go out and scout models and see what the West Coast has to offer,” Aranda said. “We want to show Janice that all the talent isn’t just based in LA. There’s local talent to be seen, so we encourage Reno to come out and be seen.”

Dickinson will also be hosting the official after party for the show at Tronix Video Music Club along with the models from the show for ages 18 and up.
