Deregulate health care?

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

So, you probably noticed that it’s my nerdy, hairy mug adorning the editor’s note this week instead of editor D. Brian Burghart’s super serious Mr. Clean visage. That’s because our fearless leader has gone out of the country for a few weeks, off to Turkey.

In light of the recent protests over there, it’s worth noting that, according to his Facebook page, Brian is “fine.”

Also, it’s probably safe for you to assume that any errors you find in this week’s paper were left in there by us intentionally so that Brian would feel like we missed him.

And don’t forget: Voting has begun on the largest, most prestigious popularity contest in the region: The Biggest Little Best of Northern Nevada. Cast your votes for your favorite local businesses, personalities and oddities.

Brian covered a lot of this last week, so my apologies to attentive readers with photographic memories, but in case you missed it, here are some of the details.

There are some new categories this year, and we ditched the least popular categories from last year. The spotlight this year is on “innovation,” a somewhat nebulous concept that will be largely defined by how people vote.

Only one ballot per email address, and we’re diligent about ballot stuffing, so don’t even think about it, but feel free to campaign. It is a popularity contest, so tell your friends if you want them to vote for you or your business.

We added an autocomplete function this year, largely based on last year’s winners.

You start typing, and a list of possible responses will pop up.

We did this to help make the voting as accurate as possible, but by no means is it any kind of endorsement or limiting factor.

Re “Take back your health care” (Liberty Belle, RN&R, May 30): This is an elegant and simplistic approach—as Chanelle Bessette put it, “remarkably simple.” The FDA was put into place to regulate the miscellaneous concoctions put out with dubious and unfounded claims. You would open the door to “cures” without merit and designed to fleece the unknowing buyer. We have enough of that in the food supplement market. It took some 10-plus years to get ephedrine tea off the list as a food supplement when it had dangerous levels of a “drug” normally used to treat asthma.

Do you really want to go to an “unlicensed” doctor? I will be one of the first ones to step up and say the medical system needs to be changed dramatically. Who has not been upset with spending upwards of 45 minutes after your appointment time for a doctor who will charge $300 for his 15 minutes with you? Yet your time is considered of no value to his $1,200 per hour fees. Why not charge the doctor back for your waiting time?

When profit comes before patients, time for a new doc.

I do not agree that eliminating government regulation would result in a stable, competitive and low-priced health system as she would suggest, just the opposite. It would open the door for profiteering beyond what it is today.

A while back, I read an article which I wish I had kept. This county opted for a full disclosure system in medical. If a doctor pulled an “oops,” he would bear responsibility and disclose the issue. The results were a 1/2 reduction in medical lawsuits, a reduction of awards (read: reduction of attorney fees) and a reduction of insurance liability fees resulting in medical fee reductions—a system where the parties take responsibility. Wow. Bessette suggested that the companies offer voluntary accreditation to force people to be more mindful about what they are consuming. That is a very optimistic approach (read: unrealistic). In a free market system, low cost would be the lead, not the individual engaging their brain on what may be best for themselves. The lowest

cost does not equate with highest quality as profits dictate. She has failed to look at the ethics of corporations. Their first responsibility is to the shareholders. Collateral damage need not be considered if the profits remain. So it is my opinion that her proposal, however well-intended, would work the opposite of what she proposes. Open up deregulation and quality controls go.

Reputations would not matter as long as the first ethical responsibility is met, ie: profits. The free market principle has its place, but quality assurance has to be there, too.

It is great to think that companies would work for the best interest of the public they are selling to. It is great to give the individual credit for “thinking” and analyzing what they purchase and not sue the rich corporations anymore.

“Remarkably simple” does not work like that in the United States. Try asking your doctor for a reduction in his fees? There goes the Porsche.

TMWA response invited Now that summer is upon us, we are being forced to water on specific days of the week. The days are controlled by the last number on your address. Odd numbers are “allowed” to water on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday, even numbers on Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday. No one is allowed to water on Monday. (Truckee Meadows Water authority states it’s a day to recharge the system.)

The part that irks me on this schedule is that residents are “allowed” to water on the weekends. This makes zero sense for a couple of simple reasons! Most of us mow our lawns on weekends! There’s nothing better than trying to get wet grass out of the grass catcher on my lawnmower! A good number of us have kids who like to play on our lawns during the weekend, and due to this policy they need to wait until high-noon when it 90+ degrees so that the grass is not wet.

I’m pretty sure the powers to be did not take any of this into consideration!

Here’s a simple idea! NO watering of household lawns on the weekends,

Big clubs need government Re: “Parlor gambling” (News, May 30): Think about it. Gambling brings in money and pays many of our bills.

If you believe we can survive on little operations and forget the big operation, you’re crazy. The parlor gambling dilutes the gambling industry into a little here, a little there. I doubt that a Dotty’s Casino brings in tourists from out of state. It’s the big casinos and their big money for advertising that brings in the big bucks. I believe we should kill the small operations as they help kill gambling on a large scale, which is what we need. Anyone remember the red zone for gambling in Reno? Maybe we should bring it back in the form of rules for gambling operations that promote big operation, not small ones.

Generally, I try to. I haven’t lately. I’ve been out of state. But I like to pay attention to what’s going on. Anything that personally affects me and my friends I try keeping up. My friends run a nonproft and I try to keep up on that stuff.

Traffic offenses We hear constantly about drivers who let themselves be distracted by the radio or cell phones or texting.

Overlooked in all this attention to the way drivers let themselves be distracted is the way government distracts drivers. Recently, digital reader-boards have been erected over local highways. Among other things, they are used for public service messages urging people to drive safety.

Public service messages belong on other media, like radio and television, not on public highways. Drivers see flickering letters over head and, expecting something like “Chains required” or “High winds” or whatever, they glance up. How many times have we heard that it takes only a moment for an accident to happen? Unless there’s a message of immediate importance on these boards, they should stay dark.

The same thing goes for the more elaborate digital reader boards that tell drivers how far they are from some local landmark at the moment. Is it really all that useful for a driver going through Sparks to know that he or she is three minutes from the airport? How much did these units cost in order for us to have such little tidbits of minimal information?

Another overlooked problem fostered by officialdom is the hazard of people driving too slowly on freeways.

On surface streets, too much speed is dangerous. But on

freeways made for speed, a lack of speed can be lethal, which is why every state in the union has a law making it a crime to drive too slowly. In this state, it’s Nevada Revised Statute 484b.623.

A driver doing 35 miles an hour who tries to insert a car into 65 mile-an-hour traffic is a hazard to all drivers.

Yet government keeps putting drivers in these risky situations, particularly on the ramps. When transferring between I-80 and I-580 through the spaghetti bowl, for instance, signs tell drivers to slow down when entering the transfer ramps—but never let them resume speed so they can safely blend into traffic at the end of the ramp.

That brings us to the stoplights installed at the end of on-ramps during I-80 expansion a couple of years ago. When the construction period ended, the lights unfortunately remained.

Drivers halted by the lights cannot get up to freeway speed fast enough to safely merge.

These lights are accidents waiting to happen.

And there are related hazards. Take a look at the photo here. It’s a police car with siren sounding and party hat flashing trying to get past drivers on the Center Street on-ramp, held in place by the idiot lights. Drivers heard the siren. They froze in place with nowhere to go. So the police officer is on the left shoulder trying to get past the two rows of immobilized cars. These lights need to be deep-sixed. Ω

2013’s legislative legacy, part I Political pundits and the privileged lobbying class are fond of dismissing Nevada progressives as a bleeding-heart liberal clan with little money or power. In light of substantial progressive victories this session, it’s time they retooled their analysis.

Two progressive highlights by were joint resolutions to change the Sheila Leslie state constitution, thus escaping the possibility of a gubernatorial veto.

Look for Senate Joint Resolution 15, passed in the 2011 session and again in 2013, on your November ballot next year. The measure removes the constitutional protection over mining taxation the industry has enjoyed since the day Nevada became a state.

If the voters approve the change in 2014, the method and rate of mining taxation will be open for debate in 2015, when mining can then be treated just like every other industry.

Grassroots progressives are gearing up to work with a newly emerging Republican coalition to battle the financial and legal might of the multinational mining corporations and win over voters. Expect to hear

a lot more about fairness in taxation and the need to more adequately compensate Nevada for the removal of our non-renewable resources.

SJR 13, the marriage equality measure, must be approved by the Legislature in 2015 before it can go to the people for a vote in 2016.

While a favorable U.S. Supreme Court decision will hopefully make the measure moot long before then, Nevada is now in the midst of the quickly-evolving national debate about marriage.

It was heartening to see how Nevadans’ views on marriage discrimination have changed dramatically in the last few years. At the same time, it was disappointing that only two Republicans voted for SJR 13, one because he has a gay sister and the other in honor of her gay mother. Hopefully a few more Republicans will stand up for equal rights in 2015, regardless of whether they have a gay family member.

Over the last ten years, the idea of creating a driver’s authorization card (allowing undocumented

people to legally drive in Nevada) has been floated repeatedly, but no serious effort was made to pass the bill until this session. In yet another clear indicator of the shift in the political winds in Nevada, Senate Bill 303 passed easily, with a vote of 20-1 in the Senate and 30-9 in the Assembly.

Hearings were jammed with proponents, arguing primarily from a safety perspective since these drivers will now be regulated and presumably have insurance. There was little public protest, a far cry from the loud and angry anti-immigrant Tea Party era just a few years ago.

One of the biggest disappointments for progressives was the ugly death of sex education in the State Senate. This was after months of careful preparation, personally difficult testimony, and a door-todoor canvass during the session by a coalition of progressives who decided it was past time Nevada youth had the opportunity to access comprehensive, medically accurate sex education in public schools.

Despite the all-out effort by the Democratic base, and an affirmative vote by every Democrat in the Assembly, the bill was unceremoniously killed by the Senate Democratic caucus on deadline day, with little warning and a mangled message. Was it the Mormon influence? A Senator mad at the Assembly for rightly scuttling a backward-thinking education bill?

Or did the Senate Democrats just have an eye on the next election, deciding they’d passed “enough” progressive bills for one session?

The absence of a reasonable explanation enraged young progressives in particular, with a spontaneous eruption of a rare intra-party firestorm on Twitter. As a furious Sin City Siren tweeted: “By the way, if you are worried that voting on progressive issues will hurt your reelection, you may be in the wrong party.”

More good, bad and ugly from the 2013 Legislature next week. Ω

Lights! Camera! Tax breaks!

Nevada has had a long-term buddy-buddy relationship with the Hollywood film industry. Its proximity to California as well as its wide variety of scenic landscapes have made it a prime location for a number of films. From the last completed film of Marilyn Monroe’s career, The Misfits, which by Chanelle Bessette was filmed in the western Nevada desert, to the multitude of movies that have taken place in the bright lights of Las Vegas and Reno—The Hangover, Ocean’s Eleven, Sister Act, Love Ranch, Casino, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Pay It Forward and many, many others— there is clearly a rich potential for cinema that takes place in the Silver State. There is a historical lure of early divorce laws and brothels as well as the modern draws of excess and adventure.

Recent pushes to develop tax incentives for filmmakers who wish to shoot in Nevada have gained some traction. In the beginning of May, actor Nicolas Cage spoke before the Nevada Legislature on behalf of the film industry, urging

the expansion of tax incentives for Hollywood. Until now, Nevada has gotten away with not offering incentives, particularly because there are aspects of Nevada’s locale that cannot be easily replicated, primarily the Las Vegas Strip. Cage was speaking in support of Senate Bill 165, which, according to the Las Vegas Sun, “would provide qualified film producers transferable tax credits worth 20 percent of production costs. Additional tax credits would be given for hiring Nevadans.”

While California’s debt, like the universe, is ever expanding, Nevada is a viable alternative for filmmakers who don’t want to break the bank.

The benefits of filming here are diverse and mutually profitable. Not only would tax incentives support one of the most lucrative art forms in the world, they would increase the number of employed Nevadans and advertise the amenities the state has to offer. In addition, Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe are already huge tourism draws, and the elite of Hollywood would be able to make themselves

easily at home. The presence of the rich and famous breeds an economy with an increased number of luxury products, which can in turn help the cash flow of the state.

By creating incentives for a highly profitable industry like filmmaking, Hollywood filmmakers may begin to think about Nevada as the first place they want to spend their production money. By offering tax breaks, our state would be investing in not only the potential for increased tourism, but also in the potential for jobs and tangent businesses like talent agencies, wardrobe and set production and location scouting agencies, all of which could easily be occupied by Nevada employees.

Journalist Abby Tegnelia said it best in the Las Vegas Sun: “We’re staring down an entire industry with jobs that don’t require four-year degrees, jobs for technicians and people who are good with their hands. Good pay without a college education, but in a career with more longevity than, say, serving

cocktails? Has there ever been a better fit for [Las Vegas’] psyche?”

Filming permits in Nevada are relatively inexpensive compared to other states, and the vast amount of space for backlots and studios, especially in Las Vegas, would make filming easy. There are also plenty of scenic locations throughout the state from Death Valley, to Lake Tahoe, to the Strip, to Red Rock Canyon and to the campuses of the University of Nevada, Reno and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Even the barren desert land that stretches for hundreds of miles could easily lend itself to the horror, science fiction, thriller or indie film genres. The main thing to worry about would be the unrelenting desert heat in the summers, but apart from the June-August period, the climate is very temperate in southern Nevada.

It’s time to embrace a destiny that Nevada is in a prime position to fulfill. By attracting the movie industry, we can expect major returns from our tax incentives. Ω

Dead in the water A veteran western water reporter says news entities in the West are not doing their job.

In a Columbia Journalism Review interview posted May 16, Arizona Republic and Las Vegas Review Journal reporter Shaun McKinnon said, “Water reporters are definitely an endangered group of people. It’s too bad because we are getting into this time when it’s probably a bigger issue than it ever has been. We need people who are out there watching and making sure everyone knows what is going on.”

Asked what issues need attention, McKinnon said, “Right now the biggest area we need to pay attention to is the effect of drought and climate change. … Drought and climate change are probably going to limit the water supply, and if they are, how are the various local water managers going to handle that?”

McKinnon elaborated to the RN&R: “I’ve been fortunate at the Republic, where we still have a large enough staff to maintain strong beat reporters, but I know that’s not the case everywhere. Water is a topic that needs a reporter who can put in the time to develop sources and, more important, build an understanding of some complex issues. You can’t parachute into a big water story and then give readers or listeners the sort of nuanced telling they deserve. There are some good independent water writers online these days who are producing good reports, but their reach is limited. Meantime, not every paper devotes resources to a beat water reporter. It’s not a topic that generates a lot of clicks or gotcha headlines and so I think it’s increasingly seen as expendable.”

GOP: Reid guilty by association Promptly upon Harvey Whittemore’s conviction for allegedly making illegal campaign contributions, the National Republican Senate Committee in D.C. attacked U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, who received the contributions.

“Harry Reid is rarely at a loss for words, but he’s been notably silent on the conviction and corruption of one of his closest friends and allies,” NRSC publicist Brad Dayspring said in a prepared statement.

Trial prosecutors never accused Reid of any wrongdoing.

Brian Crane receives top award Syndicated cartoonist Brian Crane of Sparks, creator of the comic strip “Pickles,” has received the highest award of the National Cartoonists Society—the Reuben, also known as Cartoonist of the Year.

“Pickles,” syndicated by the Washington Post Writers Group for more than 15 years, is carried in 800-plus newspapers and collected in several books published

by BaobabPress, the publishing arm of Sundance Books in Reno. It has twice received the comic strip of the year award CRANE from the NCS.

Nevada energy projects cleared The White House this week announced approval by the Interior Department of “the approval of three major renewable energy projects that, when built, are expected to deliver up to 520 megawatts to the electricity grid—enough to power nearly 200,000 homes—and to help support more than 900 jobs through construction and operations.”

The projects are a 350-megawatt Midland solar energy facility and a 70-megawatt New York Canyon geothermal facility in Nevada and a 100-megawatt Quartzsite solar facility in Arizona.”

However, if this session is truly to be marked by a new commitment to across-the-table problem-solving, Republicans must feel welcome to bring their recipes for policy and funding levels to this new ‘bipartisan buffet.’ In other words, if new revenues (taxes) are to be seriously considered for the public to spend, so too should public spending (reforms) be considered, for the public to save.”

Three months later, with the

end of session impending, Hickey was asked if Democratic and Republican legislators worked together as well as he had hoped.

“I actually think we’ve seen a vast improvement over last session,” he said. “No doubt about it.”

He said it may not have been the kind of cooperation that observers watched for, but it was there.

“The template that I think is frequently [used], I think it’s looked at as bipartisanship means, ‘Did you make some big deals and especially on taxes?’ That we didn’t do. … But I think, for example, the level of discourse and cooperation on things that did pass this session was unprecedented in terms of ways Republicans were allowed to help amend, change the bills that we probably would have otherwise voted against.” (Italics indicate emphasis Hickey gave to words.)

That kind of cooperation was not enough to overcome partisan division on hot button issues, which as Hickey notes are the ones that normally are watched closely.

There were party line or nearparty line votes in the houses or committees on things like Burning Man, annual sessions of the legislature, marriage equality, Lake Tahoe development regulation, the death penalty, guns, mining taxes, voter registration, sex education—and a few odd issues, like a

homeowners association bill.

He mentioned one of those hot button issues in his Sun essay. As an example of how he wanted cooperation to work, he said Republicans would listen to arguments on the need for a repair and maintenance tax for Washoe schools, but expected their own argument that those repairs and maintenance be exempted from prevailing wage laws to be heard respectfully.

Prevailing wages is an article of faith in both parties and does not lend itself easily to compromise, so it’s not surprising that the GOP made no progress on it.

“That proposal was rejected out of hand,” Hickey said. “The fact that it wasn’t considered, certainly makes my point [about big issues].”

But even there, a hearing was held where both sides could make their cases.

Hickey said those kinds of attention-getting issues can obscure the daily routine of hundreds of less prominent issues where Republicans were able to make their mark.

“There was a lot of cooperation and discussion going on, not necessarily on the big issues, but things we could find enough common ground on,” he said.

As an example, he points to Assembly Bill 288. With that bill, sponsored by Democratic Lucy Flores, Republican Randy Kirner was able to play an important role in shaping a significant bill that got rid of high school proficiency tests in favor of a new system praised by educators. It wasn’t a highly publicized bill, but it will touch on most Nevada families.

In the course of those cooperative dialogues, relationships were formed, Hickey said. He believes these relationships bode well for the 2015 session. (The Nevada Legislature is in session only every other year.)

Policy moves up Legislatures in the best of times are partisan, and it sometimes costs the public and lawmakers themselves.

Republican Assm. Merle Berman once introduced two bills to require health insurance coverage of mammograms and osteoporosis and then watched as majority Democrats killed them because they didn’t want such popular measures to have Republican

sponsorship. Democratic Assm.

Vivian Freeman got a mining reclamation bill through the Assembly only to be forced by majority Republicans in the Senate to surrender her sponsorship to a Republican in order to get the bill passed.

But those kinds of things have happened for decades and cooperation still survived. Not until polarization developed in the last 30 years have so many issues where virtual stalemate exists developed.

If his hope that new cooperative relationships can be built on in 2015 is to be realized, it will have to survive 2014. Election campaigns in recent years have become so scorched earth that they frequently poison subsequent relations in legislative settings.

Many Republican candidates today regard cooperative relationships as part of the problem with the political system, an argument that has appeal in GOP primaries.

(On the day of our interview with Hickey, the news was full of state and national disputes between Republican regulars and tea partiers.)

But if those relationships do survive, Hickey said one of the best things both Republicans and Democrats in the Nevada Legislature have going for them

is the current speaker, Democrat Marilyn Kirkpatrick.

“She personally was involved in helping a number of Republican members of the Assembly in getting their bills passed, and that was certainly appreciated by us, because she’s more policy-driven than necessarily partisan-oriented.”

Policy is a level on which Hickey thinks Republicans can succeed.

He also praised Sen. Debbie Smith of Washoe County, a Democrat who chairs the Senate budget committee and treated Republicans fairly.

The one area where Hickey feels most strongly that his party did not get enough of a hearing was on the Public Employees Retirement System. So his caucus held their own Republicans-only hearing to draw attention to the topic.

Hickey also thinks that the quality of the dialogue between the parties improved in this session.

When asked if he expects to be speaker in the next session, which would require an unlikely Republican triumph in numerous Assembly districts, he laughed.

“In all likelihood, absolutely not. I’m not that delusional. …

Frankly, I’d be very happy if Mrs. Kirkpatrick was speaker again.” Ω

Nevada oral history project director Alicia Barber, author of a history of Reno, spoke to the Nevada Women’s Lobby this week about the fate of the 49-year-old program, which may not make it to 50. The oral history program has recorded the lives of hundreds of prominent and lesser known Nevadans, but the recession and budget cuts have it hanging by its fingernails. During her time as director, Barber has succeeded on getting the program’s work product of a half century posted online at www.unr.edu/oralhistory. Local biodiesel company receives federal money

Bently Biofuels Company, LLC (BBC) has produced and sold biodiesel fuel out of Minden since 2005 as a green alternative to traditional petroleum fuel. And since 2009, USDA Rural Development has been supporting this company by Sage Leehey through their Advanced Biofuel Payment Program.

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced a few weeks ago that sage l@ this program paid out $14 million in fourth quarter base payments and increnews review.c om mental payments to 162 producers nationally.

The funding for this program is part of the 2008 Farm Bill, and producers apply annually for the program. Their applications are reviewed

by Mark Williams, Nevada’s Energy Coordinator of USDA Rural Development. Producers that qualify are paid quarterly a base payment that depends on their production in comparison to all participants nationally and an incremental payment, if they qualify, for increases in production from the previous year. This program will end, unless continued by another Farm Bill, on Sept. 30.

BBC’s payment included a base and incremental payment, totaling 17,362 dollars. Biodiesel of Las Vegas, the only other Nevada participant, received a payment of $5,400.

Although Williams stated that, in comparison to participants around the country, both companies in Nevada are “fairly small producers,” the payment has still helped BBC to grow.

“It’s definitely allowed us to invest in our infrastructure,” Carlo Luri said.

“We’re actually aggressively expanding our oil collection efforts. In the past, we were mostly down here in Douglas County and Carson Valley collecting cooking oil, and in Lake Tahoe. We’re actually now spending a lot of time going up to Reno collecting oil and signing up more restaurant accounts.”

Luri is the former General Manager of BBC—last month he became the Director of Business Development in BBC’s parent company, Bently Enterprises—and he stated that the payments have not changed dramatically over the years but have steadily increased. Luri stated that since BBC is never sure what they will be receiving, if anything, from this program and because it is not like other grants they may apply for, there aren’t specific costs it goes toward.

“It would be nice to say that we took that money and we bought computers or something, but it’s really money that goes into keeping the business operating,” Luri said. “And I would say 90 plus percent of all the money we spend is money spent very locally. Almost all of our business takes place within 200 miles of the biofuels plant, and that’s pretty rare for any kind of business. It’s certainly unheard of in the fuel industry, the petroleum industry.”

He said he believes that their process of making biodiesel from local restaurant’s used cooking oil is hard to find fault with and that he believes it has done, and will continue to do, a great thing for the local economy.

“This was a waste product they had,” Luri said. “They can’t put that oil in their drains, so it’s something they had to pay to have transported away from their site. And now there’s a whole biofuels industry out there more than willing to come to their restaurant, provide them a bin and then pay them to recycle the oil. And they know that that oil is going to offset some of our petroleum usage.” Ω NEWS

ost visitors to the historic mining town Virginia City rarely venture off C Street, with its wood plank sidewalks, lined with cheesy-but-fun gift shops, photo booths, taverns and candy stores. But off that main drag, there’s more to the town than retro western kitsch. (For one thing, people actually live there.) Turning east, downhill, about midway off C Street and onto Union Street leads to a lone building, a house that’s very large and looks very old. It gives off a bit of the impression of a classic cinematic haunted house—though this impression is strongly undercut by the fact that it’s also adjacent to a high school football field.

The place is St. Mary’s Art & Retreat Center. The building has nearly 40 rooms, and it looks old because it is old: It was built in 1875 as a hospital for Father Patrick Manogue and the Daughters of Charity, a Catholic sisterhood charity organization. The land was donated and the construction partially funded by John Mackay, one of the silver kings of Virginia City’s Comstock Lode boom. The hospital was named Saint Mary Louise Hospital in honor of Mackay’s wife.

The hospital was state of the art for the day, with indoor plumbing, hot and cold running water, steam heating, gas lighting, marble sinks and other amenities. It was subscription driven. Members, most of whom were miners, paid monthly dues and were assured medical care. The hospital was largely self sufficient, with gardens, chicken coops and fruit trees on the grounds.

In 1897, as the mining boom was going bust, the sisters left. Not long afterward the Storey County hospital burned down, so the county hospital staff was moved into the vacant St. Mary’s. It was then operated as the Storey County Hospital for about 40 years, until the building was abandoned again after a fire. During World War II, the metal in the building was salvaged for the war effort.

The building had been vacant for at least 15 years when, in 1964, two competing proposals came before the county commission about what to do with the building. One was a proposal to demolish the building and sell it off brick by brick. The other was a proposal by Father Paul Meinecke, the pastor of St. Mary’s in the

Meinecke was successful, and St. Mary’s was reestablished as a nonprofit arts center.

Meinecke was an orphan raised into the priesthood. He had a wooden prosthetic leg that used to fall off while he was mowing the grass around the arts center. This would reportedly evoke a torrent of ungodly language from him. He basically acted as director, curator and caretaker of the arts center.

“He always loved art,” says Rita Wheeler, the arts center’s current director. “He’s not here to speak for himself, but I get the sense that it was a true passion for him, art, and he was just stuck being a father. I don’t know that that’s fact, but it’s the way people speak of him and his passion for this building.”

So, from the mid ’60s on, partly funded by state and county grants, St. Mary’s offered community classes in painting, photography, sculpture and printing. Over the years, and under the guidance of a series of directors, the arts center had various degrees of success— sometimes vital, sometimes not. But, in some ways, the arts center is a precursor to the shared communal artwork spaces, like Reno Art Works, the Generator and Valley Arts Research Center, that have become integral to creative life in Northern Nevada.

Since the turn of the new millennium, the center, a National Historical Landmark, has expanded its programming to include gallery exhibitions. A few years ago, around 2008 and 2009, there was an excellent series of exhibitions in the fourth floor galleries volunteer curated by Reno artist Leah Ruby.

Then, for the last couple of years,

the arts center seemed to go mostly quiet (at least for art lovers; a couple of zealous caretakers were promoting the admittedly spooky old building as an attraction to ghost hunters).

However, the current slate of exhibitions, and a well-received opening reception, seem to mark the beginning of a new, energetic chapter in the life of the arts center. Right now the gallery is hosting exhibitions from University of Nevada, Reno emeritus art professor—and Virginia city resident—Edw Martinez, prolific, wellknown painter Erik Holland, and international fashion photographer Frances Melhop (see “Tip the scale,” Art of the State, May 30). There’s also an in-progress exhibition from Barbara Holmes, the center’s current resident artist, and a couple of group exhibitions, including work from the Dusty Roads, a group of mostly rural Nevada artists centered on the arts center.

It’s a fairly diverse collection of exhibitions. The arts center seems to function as both a small-town community arts center and as a regional destination for more academic artists. The center’s also used for a variety of rental programs. In addition to art workshops, it’s used for other community activities: yoga workshops, weekend retreats, weddings, family reunions and, more unusually, paranormal investigations. But the current focus seems to be on the art exhibitions.

A gem to uneArth Mimi Patrick, president of the arts center’s board, founder of Dusty Roads group and a former director of the center herself, credits the center’s current wave of renewed

energy to Wheeler, who only took over the position of executive director last summer, starting Aug. 1.

“A lot of the energy is coming directly from Rita, because she has so much,” says Patrick. “She’s willing to take on so many different projects. There’s so much happening all the time.”

Wheeler’s personality seems simultaneously sweet and ambitious—an unusual combination.

When she talks about St. Mary’s early days, as a hospital in the 1870s, she says “we” like she was there.

“I was here in spirit,” she explains with a laugh. “I really do feel connected to this place.”

Originally from Iowa, she moved to Susanville, Calif., a few years ago, and then moved to the Virginia City area two years ago to manage the Gold Hill Hotel. After her position was eliminated at the hotel, Patrick approached her about the position at St. Mary’s.

Though Wheeler’s background is in hotel management rather than arts administration, her enthusiasm for the facility definitely extends to its mission as an arts center. She doesn’t want to just run a weird old hotel with better-than-average art on the walls, but an actual arts center that serves diverse needs— an artist’s residency in a couple of potentially edgy art galleries and an accessible small-town community arts center with art workshops, yoga classes and exhibitions of student work. And in Melhop, an artist who also serves on the board, she has a volunteer creative director with international art connections to help curate the space.

For the future, Wheeler is revamping many of the individual galleries in the center, and giving them distinct missions. One gallery will be called the “Incubator Gallery,” and it will focus on work by young, emerging artists. The fourth-floor attic gallery is now called the Edge Gallery. In addition to the work by the resident artists, it will feature more provocative, potentially controversial or explicit artworks.

Patrick says that part of the reason the focus has reshifted back toward art exhibitions is that some of the last few years were focused primarily on restoration work.

“The focus changes on the building according to needs, and for a quite a while we were focusing on restoration and getting a lot of things fixed that needed fixing and bringing systems up to code,” she says.

“Putting the heating system in so we could keep the building open yearround was a major, major thing.

of time and energy to do that kind of thing, so other projects, like the exhibitions, and the work with Leah Ruby, would fall by the wayside.”

There’s still a lot of restoration work that needs to be done on the nearly 140-year-old building, most pressingly a new boiler. (They’re currently accepting donations to help with restoration efforts. For more information, call [775] 847-7774.)

Wheeler also decided to open up the building for individual room rentals. Though this might seem like a step moving the building toward being a hotel, and away from being a community arts center, it’s also a recognition that the facility appeals to an unusual assortment.

“I truly feel that the more people we expose to the building will also love it as much as we do,” says Wheeler. “There are so many unique aspects of the building, whether it’s the history, or the art, or even those people who come here for paranormal reasons. There’s an attachment when we get them here.”

Wheeler seems to have some understandably mixed feelings about the building’s reputation as a paranormal attraction. On one hand, she herself leads paranormal tours of the

building—and, in fact, she insists that she lead all such tours, and she’s able to present some very compelling, or at least entertaining, evidence—but she doesn’t want St. Mary’s to just be an old hospital for people to wander and try to talk to ghosts.

“The only way that I feel good about that is being able to tie any spirits or entities who may reside here in with the history of the building,” she says. “I really want to focus on bringing the art and the history of the building to life. We have a lot of paranormal people who come to visit us, and over the last couple of years that’s kind of overshadowed where we’re going. The caretakers that were here, that was kind of their side business.”

“It’s pretty phenomenal being in this building, too, by myself at night sometime,” says Holmes, the current resident artist. “I thought it would be kind of scary, but it’s not at all. It’s totally peaceful.”

The artist residency program is a collaboration with the Carson City Arts Initiative, which secures the grant funding and approaches the artists. The residency program is just two weeks long, which Holmes, who’s based in Oakland, Calif., says is not nearly long enough.

“It’s terrific to be here and to focus on something for a period of time,” she says. “That’s an opportunity you don’t get all the time as an artist. you’re usually torn in six different directions all at once, so residencies are really crucial to generating new work and experimenting a little bit.”

Ruby says the center is an ideal place for a longer art residency, specifically one that focuses on themes of the American West.

“It’s a perfect place for an international art internship that focuses on the Western experience,” she says. “The epitome of the Western experience is that building. The fact that it’s haunted makes it even better. Everything about it is so good.”

Holmes’ ongoing work at the center is focusing on the history of Virginia City.

“In reading about the history of the place, I was realizing that there’s a whole lot of lumber underground here [in the old mines],” she says.

“They basically clear cut the forest of the Sierra and put it underground here. There’s a famous quote by Dan De Quille that talks about, Virginia City being the tomb of the forests of the Sierras. So I was dealing with that idea in my head and trying to

figure out how to represent that in the gallery space offered to me.”

She has been visiting old tree stumps around the region, specifically near Spooner Lake, where much of the timber in Virginia City was originally felled, and using a process derived from Chinese ink rubbing, making prints of the surfaces of the stumps.

A reception of her exhibition of work will be on July 12 at 5 p.m., a reception that will also include the center’s next round of bimonthly exhibitions, also including work by photographers Nancy Raven and Nancy Good, new works by the Dusty Roads group and an exhibition of high school student artwork.

Wheeler cites as one of her biggest accomplishments so far the creation of the Paul Meinecke Gallery, named for the founder of the arts center, on the first floor of the building in a room that was formerly used for storage. Well lit and bare walled, in many ways, it’s the most traditional gallery space in the building. (Of course, a big part of the appeal of the fourth floor Edge Gallery is that it’s not a traditional gallery.) The current show of ceramics-based sculptures by Edw Martinez is the first exhibition in that space.

“I think it’s important that people know the history of Mr. Meinecke,” says Wheeler. “It brings up conversations like, ‘Who was Paul Meinecke and why would you name a gallery after him?’”

Interestingly, there’s one expression that was used, in separate conversations, by everyone interviewed for this story to describe St. Mary’s Art Center: “A hidden gem.” It’s an especially apt metaphor given the historic mining legacy of Virginia City.

“The fact that it’s an adaptive reuse of an historical building into a space for art is pretty unique,” says Patrick. “It could have been

turned into a museum, it could have been torn down for the bricks, but the fact is that Father Meinecke had some vision to see the potential of the building. And there’s still huge potential to come. As more things happen there, it changes. We’re now getting people into the building.

We’re getting tourists coming down off of C Street to look at the building and look at the art. And that’s a wonderful change.”

Livingthebliss is Reno’s newest girl power movement

It’s hard to be a woman these days.

Before you open your mouth in protest—yes, it’s fair to assume that many women prefer living now than during any other period in history. Modern women can choose to have careers, to become educated, to decide if, why and how they want to start families.

But that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

In the controversial article Why Women Still Can’t Have It All, written by Atlantic reporter AnneMarie Slaughter, she attributes much of the stress women face in their lives to the unstable economy and a lack of emotional support for women’s life choices. Women 6 | RN&R |

seek self-sufficiency and stability, families and freedom. It’s possible to be happy and successful, she writes, but something has to give.

And until the world becomes more sympathetic to these plights, women need to prioritize their happiness.

But local entrepreneur Ashley Clift Jennings is tired of women sacrificing their well-being for the sake of societal expectations.

“It’s time to cut through the bullshit,” says Jennings, the founder of Livingthebliss, an organization that plans events to help women “explore emotional topics collaboratively, using creativity, and lots of love.” “Women often don’t take the time to just grieve.”

After several years of working with female entrepreneurs through her businesses Girlmade and Lean Crafting, Jennings felt that women in Northern Nevada were lacking an outlet to express themselves and process complex feelings in the comfort of other women. These emotions, she says, were holding women back from “unlocking their potential.”

For Jennings, Livingthebliss began out of personal need. After getting married at 25 and helping her husband raise two children,

she never got a chance to process how she felt after dropping out of graduate school in Washington and relocating to Reno. Her parents’ divorce after 30 years of marriage added to the existing stress. Over time, she wrote on her website, other personal issues turned into “pretty little boxes” of grief that eventually began taking a major toll on her physical and mental health. And so, for Jennings, “there was nothing left to do but to start unwrapping the boxes.”

C om mon thre ad s Jennings says that the word “grief” often confuses people. She and collaborator Mandi Holden, author of the blog Realology, define it as the loss of a relationship—which could be “a relationship with another person that we don’t take time to grieve, or a bunch of little things, or the relationship with yourself,” Holden says.

Through Livingthebliss, Jennings and Holden hope to provide women with better tools for dealing with these changes in people’s lives. Holden refers to it as “modernizing the quilting circle.” Traditionally, quilting circles were female-centric spaces where women would, yes, quilt, and discuss their lives. Holden

also dealt with personal issues before finding the strength to connect with others in the same predicament.

“I felt like my life was not having a purpose,” she says. “But it’s important to catch that stuff before you move on. Women tend to put those needs on the backburner to tend to others before themselves.”

Sharon DeMattia, a fellow organizer, agrees. Daunted by the prospect of getting older, DeMattia—also a healthcare expert and the founder of The Art Inside You—decided to embrace the rest of her life with open arms. But before she was able to realize that, DeMattia says she went through an intense grief process—dealing with the loss of her youth. She found solace and motivation in personal improvement. The Art Inside You means that “art is imperfect, personal and all about connections,” she says. “It’s about owning everything good and bad.

And you have to look at it, and you’ve got to own it. It’s a beautiful thing just like all works of art, and we are all worthy of display.”

This is a hard concept for many women to understand and embrace, she acknowledges. “We put a lot of pressure on ourselves.

We’re expected to handle it all, supporting everybody else, let it go. But it’s OK to want to live my

being creative,” she says. “It’s important to disarm everybody to create an environment where it’s comfortable to share and let it all hang out.”

Holden says that women are constantly bombarded by images of what a “perfect” life looks like, and “living up to Pinterest” ideals of how to live a life can be detrimental. Pinterest, a web site that functions as a virtual bulletin board for ideas and inspiration, has been criticized for promoting unrealistic aspirations for domestic bliss. But Jennings says that she referred to Pinterest when planning the first event, and that the website can be good for helping people establish a vision for themselves.

Creating a “beautiful environment” for the workshop with flowers, candles and tote bags filled with goodies was important for making women feel appreciated, comfortable and loved.

Jennings promises that Livingthebliss events won’t go “super deep”— the workshops are not intended to take the place of therapy, although it can be considered “therapeutic.”

“It’s about looking at your own process within a support group,” she says. “This is a vehicle to go deeper into that process. …

[Livingthebliss] has kind of warped—” “—evolved,” insists Holden.

“Evolved into a way for people to discover their potential,” says Jennings.

Ultimately, Jennings, Holden and DeMattia hope that the positive energy will inspire women to take control of their own lives and encourage them to start their own businesses or community projects.

“The healthier these women are, the healthier their families can be,” Holden says. “We’re just hoping to create a healthier community, one woman at a time.” Ω

The first event through Livingthebliss was held on May 25 at the River School Farm and was dubbed an art therapy workshop.

It served as a “prototype,” says Jennings, to determine what the needs are of women in the community. There were three goals: to get “the sense that you are not alone; the ability to give yourself permission to make space in your life for grief; [and] to introduce you to the powerful effect that creativity, togetherness and mindfulness can have on your emotional well-being.”

“It’s targeted toward rad women who are just a little bit stuck,” she says, referring to herself as the “curator” for the event. “It’s just to help grease the wheels and help women learn how to brand themselves. We’re trying to find out, ‘How do we live a normal life without a disorder lexicon?’”

Normalizing the range of emotions most women experience is a vital aspect of the project.

Comfort is key.

She hopes that women with different personality types will be able to find common ground in their struggles and triumphs.

Sessions were led by Holden, DeMattia and yoga instructor Denise Barclay and were intended to encompass mind, body and spirit. Barclay took participants through a beginner’s yoga session as a way to recalibrate women with their bodies. DeMattia showed women how to create a personal brand, which, as defined in Forbes, “is about making a fulltime commitment to the journey of defining yourself as a leader.”

Holden helped women own their personal stories and express themselves through discussion and writing.

Tartuffe I’ve adored the genius of Molière’s comedy ever since catching my college’s production of The by School for Wives back in the early ‘90s. So Jessica Santina I was thrilled that Reno Little Theater is presenting Tartuffe this spring.

Although the production was funny, I wound up somewhat disappointed in the end by the show’s lack of commitment to the play’s setting, as well as by its actors’ uneven performances.

Forget for a minute that Tartuffe (“The Imposter”) was written in 1664 and is set during—and pokes fun at—the Reno little Theater, reign of King Louis XIV. Though the 147 E. To be clear, I’m fine with all that. The updated version makes the story easier to follow and helps the story to move along at a healthy clip. It’s set in the Jazz Age, time of Hemingway and Fitzgerald, in the epicenter of arts and culture. And the dialogue’s more contemporary feel makes the themes more universal and timeless.

The play opens in of Orgon’s home.

While Orgon himself (played by Kirk Gardner) is away, awaiting his arrival are his wife, Elmire (played by Annikki Larsson); their son, Damis (Anthony Mendoza); their daughter, Mariane (Breana Edgerton); their nosy chambermaid, Dorine (Jessica Nicholas); and Elmire’s visiting sister, Cléante (Julie Douglass). Orgon’s mother, Madame Pernelle (Veronica Fraser), has come for a visit and lectures the family about their sinful lifestyle.

She’s disgusted that none of them seems impressed with Orgon’s friend, Tartuffe.

Tartuffe (Gary Cremeans), who claims to be a man of unreserved religious devotion, has so completely convinced Orgon of his piety that he has manipulated his way into living in the man’s home, being

named heir to his fortune and securing the hand of Orgon’s daughter, forcing Mariane to call off her impending nuptials with her true love, Valère (Brandon Keil). He has turned Orgon against his own family. Now Tartuffe has tried to seduce Elmire, and that’s the last straw. The family cooks up a plan to expose Tartuffe.

Performance-wise, it’s a mixed bag.

Mendoza and Keil were awkward and stiff in their roles, and Douglass’ Cléante was eye-roll-inducing as she lectured Orgon about his blindness toward Tartuffe. Her character is intended to be the voice of reason, but she came off as cloying and school-marmish.

Although the actors primarily wear ’20sera costumes, very little else speaks of the era. There’s no jazz or colloquial language

from that period. And when Tartuffe finally makes his appearance toward the end of Act 1, he’s unshaven and greasy-haired, wearing clothing that’s out of step, time-wise, from the rest of the cast. There’s not even a mention of France. This confusion is compounded when, in the final scene, an officer (Jeff Burres) steps on stage to sort out the trouble, looking like a World War II-era SS trooper and babbling about the president. What the hell? Where are we?

The show does have redeeming qualities. This is the second production I’ve seen Larsson in, and the second time I’ve really liked her. Same goes for Fraser’s stern Madame Pernelle, who is hilarious as she ignorantly sings Tartuffe’s praises. Gary Cremeans’ Tartuffe is wonderfully slimy.

I enjoyed the brisk pace at which much of the dialogue was delivered, which befits Molière’s style, and certain exchanges involving Dorine, Orgon and Mariane had the entire audience laughing.

But in the end, the production feels incomplete and unsure of itself, which keeps it from rising to its full height. Ω

guests. The restaurant business is in his blood; his folks own the Dynasty China Bistro on California Avenue.

A few historical influences help define Taiwanese food. Fujian province dishes from mainland China were originated in the 18th century with the first immigrants to Taiwan, and from 1895 to 1945, the Japanese occupation introduced techniques and ingredients like the mountain yam and ramen.

Because so much of the cuisine revolves around fermented foods, the liberal use of vinegar, sugar and chili gives the food its unique characteristic. This treatment doesn’t totally neutralize the cuisine, but rather sharpens and frames the flavors with acid, sweetness and spice.

There are more than 90 dishes on the menu from soups to gourmet offerings to chicken, pork, beef and fish ($3.99-$10.89). There’s a vegetarian selection ($7.89-$8.89) and more than two dozen specialty drinks ($2.80-$3.55).

The chef went a bit overboard by serving me several dishes to taste.

Highlighting those that caught my palate’s attention—first was the gourmet rice ($4.59). It was sticky rice that looked like a cupcake and

was filled with dried shrimp, sautéed pork, black mushrooms sitting in a miso broth and topped with sprigs of coriander. It was savory with a hint of sweetness from coconut milk in the broth and more filling than a plain side of rice.

Next was something called a Taiwanese hamburger ($3.89), which was much more than a simple burger and full of flavor. This was braised pork (belly), with flavors of garlic, ginger, chili peppers, Chinese spice bag (anise, cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, basil, bay leaves), rice wine, soy sauce and brown sugar slow simmered to infuse all these great flavors. It was served on an oval bun made from the same light, pale white dough as barbecued pork buns with a side sauce of crushed peanuts, Taiwanese sweet sauce, cilantro, pickled relish and Taiwanese red sugar. This was a cavalcade of flavors with a hint of sweet-tart in every savory bite.

A small taste of the tofu with baby bai choy (Chinese cabbage) ($8.29) for a vegetarian sampling proved full of flavor and crisp vegetables rather than soggy. The highlight came with the Braised Beef Noodle Soup ($7.89). The flavors of ginger, scallions, Sichuan peppercorns and an anise seed made the savory broth aromatic. Nice pieces of braised beef piled in a bowl of long, ribbon-like rice flour noodles flavor with green tea made this dish a complete, hearty meal. It’s traditionally a celebratory meal for the New Year, as long noodles symbolize long life.

Milk teas, smoothies and icy slushes ($2.75-$3.55) with many flavors are the drink offerings. I tried the Boba milk tea ($3.00), also known as pearl milk tea or PMT. This a tea-based drink invented in tea shops in Taiwan during the 1980s. It was served with small chewy tapioca balls, commonly called “pearls” or “boba.” The consistency is like a gummy bear: soft and chewy, and no larger than a marble. Sweet, milky rich, enjoyably different with the tapioca balls and fat drinking straw, I’d order another for sure.

Taiwanese food is distinctively different from other oriental foods by giving your palate a new adventure in sweet, tart and savory. Lin said he wanted to make the food in this restaurant authentic to his heritage. I think he has succeeded. Ω

Smith busters Earth’s Thin Crust Creates Hot Spring in the Black Rock Desert There are four well known hot springs in Black Rock Desert National Conservation Area. These springs were vital to the survival of early emigrants in the 1800’s. The water was cooled, then consumed both by livestock and people. Today, visitors enjoy these natural formations visually and only one can be swam in.

Caution should always be used at hot springs. Temperatures can be hotter than 150° Fahrenheit and some are hotter at 180° F. The average temperature for home hot tubs in 104° F. and skin is scalded within three seconds in 140° F water.

Trego Hot Springs

This natural spring is on the east side of the playa. When the railroad tracks were being built, water was struck, a ditch was created and a pool was made. This spring is the only one in the area people can swim in. It can be accessed off of Jungo Road or from the playa.

After Earth Will Smith plays Royal King Douche of All Douchebags in director M. Night Shyamalan’s latest travesty, the unwatchable, intolerable, totally stink-able After Earth.

Conceived by Smith, who gets a story credit, as a project for himself and his son Jaden—they were cute together in The Pursuit of Happyness—the Smiths are cast as a father and by son stranded on Earth long after humans have Bob Grimm abandoned it. It seems the place has become uninhabitable for humans, who can no longer b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m breathe on the planet’s surface, yet all manner of wildlife—buffalo, huge-assed birds, baboons, lions, etc.—have no problem sucking wind on the globe.

They wind up on the planet after their transport ship drives through an asteroid field, killing all but the two of them. After the harrowing

Black Rock Springs

Black Rock Springs is about a tenth of a mile northwest of Black Rock Point. This spring is extremely hot and dangerous. The smaller pool reaches unknown depths and shouldn’t be entered due to extreme deadly temperatures. The larger, more shallow pool is as hot. The road to the spring is only accessible in the driest playa conditions.

Double Hot Springs

Double Hot Springs is 180 degrees F., has a fence around it and shouldn’t be entered. It’s a beautiful spring formation with incredibly clear waters.

People and animals have died after falling into the springs, so stay clear and don’t climb the fence.

About 50 yards downstream is a soaking tub which lies on private property and can be used. This spring can be reached from the same road as the Black Rock Springs.

Soldier Meadows Hot Springs

Soldier Meadows Springs lies north of the Fly Canyon Road. Man-made dams have created a series of shallow pools. These delicate eco-systems should be approached with caution.

Hazards at Hot Springs

Despite inviting appearances, most hot springs are deadly hot. Some of the hazards are: • 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns cause disfigurement or death • Loss of consciousness from chemical fumes • Cuts from sharp rocks or broken glass • Bacterial irritations and diseases Regard the ‘no closer than 300 feet’ camping rule, for your safety!

crash (the best thing in the movie), Will Smith’s stiff, unloving dad Cypher Raige (this year’s pick for dumbest character name!) is severely injured and must stay behind in the crippled ship as son Kitai Raige (hey, wait … no … that’s this year’s dumbest character name!) must venture out into evil Earth to retrieve a rescue beacon from the ship’s tail section many kilometers away.

Actually, there was another survivor. The ship was also carrying an alien monster that can’t see you unless you are afraid of him and shooting off stinky pheromones. Being able to shut off all fear and avoid such monsters is Cypher’s calling card. He’s not afraid of anything, so he’s not going to get eaten. The kid, on the other hand, is scared shitless and prime bait for such a creature.

Cypher is one of those badass General dads who has a problem expressing emotion and barks orders at his kid during suppertime. He’s not going to take the kid out into the backyard for a catch. He’s going to be unloving, unkind and unholy freaking dull.

Will Smith has made past movies fun due to his charisma and the fact that he is generally awake when the director yells “Action!”

In this film, he’s barely got a pulse, and, to make matters worse, his character just sits around with a broken leg, basically guiding his son’s performance via a futuristic Skype-like communication.

Jaden’s performance is actually worse than his dad’s in this movie. Both speak with ridiculous accents that I’m thinking are supposed to be a mixture of many past Earth accents (a little British, crossed with Rastafarian and a touch of German).

I’m picturing the following conversation between M. Night Shamma-lamma-ding-dong and Jaden Smith on the set: M. NIGHT: “Hey Jaden, your dad is really dragging ass in this movie. I need some emotional juice out of you to balance things out.

So, I need you to cry and scream and whine and stuff like that.

Also, please pretend that the thing chasing you is a real lion and not just crappy CGI. Understand?”

JADEN: “Screw you, M. Night! Will Smith is my dad, and I can do whatever I want! And The Village sucked!”

M. NIGHT: “Why you little bastard! I made The Sixth Sense … and Signs!”

JADEN: “Yeah, you also made The Happening and The Last Airbender, bitch!”

WILL SMITH: “Son, do what the director told you, and stop bringing up the bad movies. It makes the dude withdraw and shit, and then we won’t get any work done.”

JADEN: “Dad, shut up. Your performance is leaden, and you are making my inexperienced ass carry this whole damned thing! I want to go home and do karate!”

WILL SMITH: “Yeah, whatever. I’m going to make another Hancock or Bad Boys after this bombs. You go ahead and start that big music career of yours. Haha.”

JADEN: “I hate you!”

WILL SMITH: “I hate you, too. Haha.”

M. NIGHT (Crying and hugging himself in the corner): “I made The Sixth Sense …”

Trust me, the above fictional exchange is more compelling than anything that happens in After Earth.

Will Smith allegedly wanted After Earth to be the first movie in a franchise. Further films probably won’t happen unless he writes the checks himself and stays far the hell away from Shyamalan. Ω

Spike Lee tried to get a movie about American hero Jackie Robinson, starring Denzel Washington, off the ground for many years, but couldn’t make it happen. I get a feeling that Lee, who made one of the great biopics with Malcolm X, would’ve done something really special with the subject.

This effort from director Brian Helgeland (Payback) is OK, even really good at times, but gets awfully hokey in too many moments.

Chadwick Boseman is a great pick to play Robinson, as is Lucas Black as Pee Wee Reese. Harrison Ford delivers big time as Branch Rickey, the man who brought Robinson to the majors, and Christopher Meloni leaves the movie all too soon as Dodgers manager Leo Durocher, who was suspended the year Robinson made his debut. Boseman shines, even when the movie doesn’t, and it’s a lot of fun to see Ford do something this craggy and different. I’m thinking Robinson went through some major hell during his baseball times, and this movie only scratches the surface. It’s good, but it should’ve been great.

Fast & Furious 6

This franchise could’ve ended about five films ago, and I would’ve been fine with that. Vin Diesel mumbles his way through another fast car movie, this one with some admittedly fine driving stunts. The plot involves some nonsense about Vin and his crew (including Paul Walker) going after some other bad guy driver who’s threatening the world. He also has Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) working for him, even though she blew up in a prior movie. Dwayne Johnson is in there, too, as a badass lawman, and future installments will involve another one of my least favorite action stars if the post-credit footage is any indicator. I like to watch good pyrotechnics, but I hate it when just about everybody in these films opens their mouths.

It looks like these movies will never end, and Michelle Rodriguez will never die.

The Great Gatsby

It was a little worrisome when Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel had its release postponed last year. As it turns out, making the film a summer blockbuster rather than an awards season contender was a great move, because this one is right at home in the summer movie season. Shot in glorious 3-D, it works magic with the format. It’s a rollicking roaring ’20s movie that shouldn’t be missed.

Leonardo DiCaprio is a marvel in the title role, giving us a vulnerable and sometimes slightly crazy Gatsby in relentless pursuit of his love, Daisy (Carey Mulligan). Tobey Maguire is excellent as narrator and Gatsby admirer Nick Carraway, while Joel Edgerton steals scenes as Tom Buchanan. Those who like Luhrmann’s opulent, sometimes frantic style will find plenty to like in this movie.

He also manages to use music by Jay-Z and Lana Del Ray in a movie set nearly a century ago.

The Hangover Part III

And you thought The Hangover Part II was bad. All the principles return for a third go round, and the magic proves long gone. This time the action surrounds Alan (Zach Galifianakis) going off of his meds, accidentally beheading giraffes, and in need of a rehab stint. After an intervention, Phil, Stu and Doug (Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha) resolve to take him to the clinic. Before they get there, an evil crime lord (John Goodman) intercepts them and sends them on a hunt for Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong). Jeong occupies much of this film, a bad thing since his wild man act got old two films ago. Of the three films, this one has the least amount of laughs, and proves that the first film should’ve been the last. I like these actors together. How about another movie where they get to play different characters?

Enough of this crap.

Iron Man 3

Shane Black, director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (starring Robert Downey Jr. in his best performance ever) and writer of such action classics as Lethal Weapon, gets his second directorial chore and delivers big time. Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) is now an insomniac suffering from panic attacks after the events of The Avengers, and he faces a new adversary in The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). Stark is a little bit shaky in this one, and that gives the film a dark, comic edge. Gwyneth Paltrow gets a little more screen time as Pepper Potts, while Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall show up as mysterious scientific types.

Downey Jr. is as fun as ever here, and Black knows just what to do with him. Black is also pretty snappy with the action scenes, which don’t disappoint. If this is the last of Downey Jr.’s solo Iron Man films, he’s going out on a good note.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Magnificent...

It’s official: Jeff Nichols, who gave us the brilliant Take Shelter, is a writer/ director who stands among the best of them.

Matthew McConaughey plays the title character, a chipped-tooth, wild-haired drifter living in a boat in a tree along the Mississippi.

Two kids, Ellis and Neckbone (Tye Sheridan of The Tree of Life, and Jacob Lofland) stumble upon him, and find themselves part of his strange and dangerous world. McConaughey is just catching wave after wave lately, and this is his best one yet. He makes Mud a little scary, yet charming and cunning. Sheridan and Lofland are terrific as the young friends who should probably stay away from guys living in boats in trees. The cast also boasts Reese Witherspoon, Michael Shannon and Sam Shepard—all of them equally great. Ladies and gentleman, we have the year’s first “excellent” movie. Jesus, it took long enough.

For those of you hankering for another magician movie after The Incredible Burt Wonderstone … here it is! A Vegas magician act called the Four Horseman (Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco) concludes their show by seemingly robbing a bank in France through teleportation. An FBI agent (Mark Ruffalo) and an Interpol detective (Melanie Laurent) investigate, and we snore. Morgan Freeman is on hand as a man who makes a living debunking magic, as is Michael Caine as a millionaire bankrolling the Horseman. It all amounts to nonsense, with a lot of swirling cameras and stupid fights involving playing cards and paper cuts. The big reveals are silly, and much of what happens on the magic side is never explained. Eisenberg delivers one of the year’s more annoying performances.

J.J. Abrams continues the great thing he started with his 2009 reboot of this beloved franchise. This time out, he gives us some more familiar characters from Trek history, but thanks to that ingeniously created alternate timeline, the people aren’t quite the same. Benedict Cumberbatch is scary as a renegade Starfleet officer looking to kill as many commanders as possible while Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) chase him all over the universe. Peter Weller enters the fray as a power hungry admiral, with Alice Eve a welcome addition as his daughter and Enterprise stowaway. There are moments when Abrams goes a little overboard with his homage—I hate that tribble!—but it’s not enough to damage what turns out to be another worthy chapter to the franchise, and a solid summer movie.

Video killed Clementine’s Knight Zombie robot barflies ogle a damsel, a gumchewing pig plays poker and is shot in the head while University by Kyril (Ky) Plaskon of Nevada, Reno cheerleaders dance on a smoky casino stage.

This dreamy Reno-branded reality has made local band Clementine’s Knight big on the internet with a quarter million views in less than six months.

just three months ago, which drew a concert of 134,000 views. It has Reno written all over it. A cowboy walks across the desert toward Reno, the lead singer takes the last swig of his whiskey, then UNR cheerleaders flash winks and dance provocatively in a lounge while the band plays under the Reno Arch.

“We got a comment [on the video], ‘I guess these guys are from Reno,” Siino said. “I only thought about that after producing the video, should we have pinpointed ourself so much?”

Siino and Ward say their inspiration for the videos comes from Reno’s western grittiness to the starry clear skies.

“We have old buildings and nice people at the same time,” Siino says.

“Reno has a lot of contrast. I like things that don’t mix. When you have all these things they kind of oddly fit.”

Some of their online success can be attributed to a cowboy in the video “Something Like a Dream” who unleashes six-shooter gunfire on a real pig’s head. That guy is UNR Media Manager Mark Gandolfo. Siino was his assistant.

“He would just guide me.”

Siino graduated from UNR this year.

“Crown your fears and kneel for tasteless dreams,” he sings in one song. “Dry your tears and die a standing king.”

“That is kind of like a choice,” he says. “You can give into your fears and you kind of succumb to the life around you. Or you can fight for your dreams and even if you fail, you chased something noble. It is kind of like the idea of the tragic hero. A good story is something you experience yourself and learned something. You walk away with that wisdom.” Ω

The band name is in the photos: Joseph Siino, Robert Landers, Trevor Ward and Shawn Sariti.

“I run into people all the time and tell them what band I am in, and they are like, ‘I have heard of you,’” says lead guitarist Trevor Ward. “And I am like, ‘Where have you heard us? I know you haven’t been to one of the five live shows we have played.’”

They have been contacted by a manager and a Portland band asked them to tour. But there are a few problems. Their songs are layers of instruments recorded individually, “which doesn’t work well for live shows,” Ward said. They didn’t have a drummer until a couple of weeks ago, and they need money.

“We don’t have anything for sale,” says lead singer Joseph Siino. “That is why we are in a rush while we have some attention.

We really want to go for it this summer. There really isn’t a big rock band that has come out of Reno. It would be awesome if we were that band.”

For now, their claims to fame are the YouTube videos.

Sparks Farmers’ Market The 21st annual farmers’ market in downtown Sparks opens for the season this Thursday, June 6. The gathering offers fresh produce, meat, chicken and eggs from farmers in Nevada and Northern California, as well as specialty products, arts and crafts, children’s activities and non-amplified entertainment. The Sparks Farmers’ Market takes place from 3-8 p.m. every Thursday through Aug. 22 (except for July 4 and Aug. 9) at Victorian Square Plaza on Victorian Avenue, across the street from John Ascuaga’s Nugget. An Evening of One-Woman Plays Good Luck Macbeth Theatre Company presents two one-act plays, “Parly Girl” and “Body of Knowledge.” The first is a 2013 San Francisco Fringe Festival-selected play written and performed by Sandra Brunell Neace. Neace’s work follows the highs and lows of a New York City waitress as she struggles to survive on less than minimum wage. The second play, written and performed by Linda Noveroske, explores how our personal histories are embodied, represented and performed. Nevada Museum of Art kicks off summer with a Latin-flavored block party this Saturday, June 8, featuring live performances, food and craft vendors and hands-on art projects. The event also highlights the exhibition Voces y Visiones, a survey of the art collection of El Museo del Barrio in New York, the leading cultural institution in the United States dedicated to Latino, Latin American and Caribbean art. The exhibit features more than 50 works of art in a variety of mediums that addresses themes ranging from identity politics to emotional connections to one’s homeland. Artist Miguel Luciano, whose bicycle-based work “Pimp My Piragua” appears in the exhibit (above), will present a talk at the NMA on June 7 and will return the following day to pass out shaved ice treats from his creation. There will also be face painting, a rock wall for climbing and a Tumblebus for the kids. DJ Fredie, BB and Kiki from Salsa Reno, the Gózalo Dance Group and Ritmo Ardiente will perform at the party, which starts at 10 a.m. at Nevada Museum of Art, 160 W. Liberty St. Admission is free. For more than two years, Jason Hollis and company have provided an outlet for Reno residents of a certain age looking to get their alternative ’80s, industrial and goth fix and a chance to relive their black-clad youth. Unfortunately, the monthly nostalgia trip will end this Friday, June 7. Jessica Fichot The multilingual chanteuse returns to the area with a series of shows in Truckee and Reno. The Los Angeles-based musician sings songs in French, Chinese and Spanish and blends French chanson, folk, gypsy jazz and world music. Fichot, whose mother is Chinese and father is French, was born in New York but spent her youth in France. After earning a degree in audio engineering in France, she enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston to study songwriting. While in Boston she wrote children’s songs for musical theater and educational programs.

After moving to Los Angeles, she focused on a solo career and has released two albums, 2007’s Le Chemin and 2012’s Le Secret. My girlfriend and I love each other, but we feel we’re becoming numb to hearing it from each other. We’ve been together three years, so I assume that time is what’s put a damper on the “three little words.” I suggested that when we are about to say “I love you,” we come up with something more personal and meaningful.

This, sadly, was difficult and lasted about a day. Now we’re back to expressing affection the rote way. Yes, we could have a bigger problem, but beneath this is a bigger worry—that the relationship will get old, too.

The pressure to be original in love can be pretty trying.

Imagine Shakespeare tentatively mumbling to a woman, “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” and hearing back, “Ugh, Will, for the third time this week?”

Likewise, the first time you heard “I love you” from your girlfriend, you probably thought, “Wow, she loves me! Hot damn!” But once a relationship gets going, sometimes “I love you!” wells up from the bottom of the heart and sometimes from the need to say something a little more feel-good than “Gotta get off the phone, so I can clean up this cat vomit.” Sometimes, one partner is needy and says it constantly so they can hear it back constantly. (If not for somebody being there in their life to respond, they’d be standing for days on end yelling it into the Grand Canyon.)

So, yes, it’s probably time for a little rationing of “I love you” if it’s become shorthand for everything 32 | RN&R |

short of “pass the salt.” But there’s actually research by Dr. Sara Algoe and others showing that expressions of appreciation seem to keep a relationship alive, keeping partners from taking each other for granted and feeling taken for granted. This doesn’t necessarily require blithering on in detail about your partner’s great qualities, especially not when you both know what you’re really saying with a laughing “I love you!” is “You are simply the greatest for coming over and resting your boobs on my head while I’m stuck writing these boring reports.”

Of course, one of the best ways to make “I love you” more meaningful is by showing it—ideally, at least once a day—just by thinking about what would make each other happier and less stressed and doing it.

This could involve small kindnesses like getting up to refill your girlfriend’s drink when you’re eating dinner or somewhat bigger (and ickier) kindnesses like telling her to stay put while you clean up after her puking cat.

Any guy can go through the romantic motions—say “I love you” on Valentine’s Day with $50 worth of chocolate truffles and a suspiciously funerary flower arrangement—but it takes a truly loving guy to say it on a random Tuesday with a rag full of cat vomit. Ω

1961, the Communist government of East Germany built the Berlin Wall. It was a thick concrete barrier designed to prevent the oppressed citizens of East Berlin from escaping to freedom in West Berlin. The barrier was eventually policed by armed guards.

What I mean is: You’ll have every right to get riled up, and you should express your feelings, but not in ways that create problems for you.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): There’s

only one correct way to spell the English word “beauty.” But that wasn’t true centuries ago. Before the advent of the printing press, orthographic anarchy prevailed for many words. Some of beauty’s variations included “bewte,” “beaute,” “beuaute,” “bealte,” “buute,” “bewtee” and “beaultye.”

I bring this up, Aquarius, because I think it would be fun and healthy for you to take a respite from having to slavishly obey standardized rules. I’m talking about not just those that apply to spelling, but others, too.

Miss Moto Mary McGee is a 76-year-old Gardnerville resident and the 2012 International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) “Woman Legend.”

She has raced cars and motorcycles and collected quite a few “first woman in the United States” titles.

She was the first woman in the United States to race in an FIM sanctioned motorcycle race, to finish the Baja 1000, to road-race motorcycles, to race motocross, to compete with Europeans in international motocross and to ride the Baja 500 solo.

So when did you start racing?

I started racing cars first, 1957. A lot of great sports cars. And in 1960, I started road-racing motorcycles. When I started road racing motorcycles, I just added that, so I was racing sports cars and racing motorcycles at the same time because the road races for motorcycles were, many times, on the same weekends at many tracks.

What got you involved with all this?

Chance. The opportunity came, and I said, “Yeah, I’d like to do that. Why not?” Same with the motorcycles. I was racing cars at Santa Barbara actually, and Vasek Polak, who was Mr. Porsche—he had all the great racing cars—and he used to road race motorcycles in Czechoslovakia. He and my husband were down at one turn or another

What about the FIM gala?

Yes! That was great, too. I got an email, which I thought was a joke at first. … I was the 2012 FIM Woman Legend.

watching the motorcycles, and Vasek said to Don, “Ah. Mary. She should road race the motorcycles. Make even more smooth than the car.” Don thought it was a great idea. I said, “Why not?” And he worked at Honda, so I got a bike, a CB92.

Yes it is. Yay! It was awesome. I had to have evening wear, which was the hardest thing. I had to make four trips to Reno to find things. But it was great. ... There were five guys and me. I loved it. I still can’t believe I got to do it.

Nice. And how did it go from there?

Do you still ride?

I just started in, and being the first female in the United States to road-race motorcycles, I had to actually try out at Willow Springs. There were a lot of guys racing sports cars, who were also into dirt bikes—Bobby Harris, Bobby Drake, Steve McQueen—and they used to tease me a lot about my road-racing bike to get out to desert. Well, at a party sometime, McQueen said, “McGee, you gotta get off that pansy road-racing bike and come out to the desert!” And I said, “Ew! And get dirty?” But Don thought it was a good idea, so I thought I’d try it. ... And in 1969 was the first Baja 500. … I was at the halfway point, but the bike never made it to me. Anyway, I continued mostly with motorcycles. But in ’70, I did drive a car

Return of the monster Back in the May 2 issue, I wrote about the amazing bio-comeback story of the year, the almost Jurassic Park-like tale of the giant Lahontan cutthroat trouts (LCTs) that have been revived, regenerated, and replanted in their original home, Pyramid Lake. There are usual lingering followups, of course.

1. This is perfect fodder for a television special. The first shows I think of are the big science hitters of PBS, namely Nova and Nature. This tale is in the wheelhouse of each.

The Discovery Channel and Animal Planet could well be interested.

Whomever gets the call, it’s a story with all kinds of great angles—genetics, detective work, serendipity, and fantastically huge fish. “The One That Got Away—and Came Back!”

2. This tale is thoroughly worthy of its own brochure, to be handed out at all stores and rangers stations at Pyramid. You can’t really do this story justice with a road sign or a highway maker. There are just too many people and twists and turns.

also. I finished seventh. And in 1975—this is one of my proudest moments—Rolf Tiblen, big time world champion, said, “McGee, you’re going to do the 500 solo.” I said, “I’m not. I can’t ride that solo.” He said, “Yes, you can. You’re going to do it.” And so I did, and I did finish. I’m very proud of that. That’s 520 or 540 miles. Baja was an amazing thing. Just amazing.

Vintage. I have a 1974 250 Husqvarna that I do vintage motocross with it. For vintage, 1974 is the newest a motorcycle can be.

They prepare the tracks like we raced on back in the day, not the modern tracks, because we don’t have any suspension hardly in these old bikes. Then we race on them. When I first started, I did the women’s class, then I did the women’s over 60 class and then I did the women’s over 70 class. And now I just do the over 70 class. I’m 76. That’s all I can do. Ω

• chronic disease management I rolled out to good ole Crosby’s Lodge in Sutcliffe recently, to check out all the pics on the wall of people who’ve caught specimens from this year’s first wave of Big Uns. I knew those pics would be there, and they were. Dozens of ’em.

Most of this year’s crop were between 10 and 13 pounds, and some of those were just fat, girthy, gorgeous bastards, often 24 to 27 inches long.

The kicker is next year. There will be more, slightly bigger fish, probably in the 16-19 pound range. In ’15, we should start to see a fair sampling of 20-25 pounders. After that, we’ll see. By 2020, with modern science joining forces with a hefty supply of renewed respect, reverence, and awe for this species, will we see the first 50 pound trout at Pyramid?

The future of Monster Fishing at Pyramid Lake is looking very good indeed. I’m eagerly anticipating the TV show, the brochure—and my first 32-pounder. Ω

To do the job properly, you gotta have the full-color, multi-page brochure, explaining the history of the Great Fish, its 70 year “extinction,” and its quasi-miraculous resurrection. I’m one of those sticklers who cringes at shoddy use of the word “miracle.” But in this case, while the return of the LCT giants isn’t a miracle per se, it sure as hell is freaking awesome and a terrific example of modern genetics science at its best.

3. The wipe-out applied by moronic overfishing and bone-headed environmental degradation in the 19th and early 20th century that led to the apparent extinction of these magnificent 20-, 30-, and 40-pound monsters ... how many times do we get an extremely precious second chance to make amends for our bodacious bio-booboos? I have high hopes that all involved this time around—the various wildlife and tribal agencies in charge of this precious second chance—won’t muck it up.
