Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

OK, here we go. Assuming everything works as planned, as you read this Editor’s Note, our Biggest Little Best of Northern Nevada popularity contest is live at www.newsreview.com/ reno/ballot/bestofreno13. We’ll be accepting nominations and votes through Friday, July 19 at 3 p.m.

Every year, we choose to highlight a certain aspect of Northern Nevada, and this year, we’re all about innovation. It’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot the past few years, as I watch Reno reinvent itself. When you log on to vote, you’ll see what I mean. Be creative in your thinking.

We’ve added new categories, based on the “Freestyle” results from last year. We’ve also removed the least voted-in categories and combined some others. The biggest change you’ll see is we’ve added an autocomplete function so that when you start typing in an answer, a list partially based on last year’s winners will come up. If you don’t see your intended nomination on the list, just keep typing. As we see trends in the voting, we’ll add to the autocomplete list.

Why the autocomplete list?

Two reasons: First, we see this as a way of making results more accurate. Why should a chain store beat a locally owned and operated store just because there are more of the chain stores? Bigger doesn’t always mean better. Second, we’re trying to make the counting easier and more accurate. Do you know how many ways there are to spell “Ascuaga,” for example, or how many “Nuggets” there are in Northern Nevada?

Of course, it does create the potential for a chain to win first, second and third-place spots.

But you know me, I love the chaos.

I’m excited. If you’ve been around, you know how we like to mix this thing up, using local artists and themes to make it our most anticipated issue of the year. Well, this year, we have an idea that’ll induce eyegasms.

I love it when a plan comes together. At least, I hope it all comes together because by the time you read this, I should be 6,535 miles away, trying to avoid international incidents.

Re “Food for the Future” (Letters to the Editor, May 9): It’s exasperating when an eloquent writer expresses an idea as though all the bases were being covered, when in reality important aspects of the idea are completely ignored. Brendan Trainor wants to equate non-support of GMO foods with not caring about the survival of billions of humans. Not! The longterm effects of GMOs on planetary food production and human health are uncertain at best, beyond mere production totals. GMOs are no savior. Moreover, a look at some local dumpsters or piles of subsidized, rotting food around the world attests that starvation is more a problem of distribution than production.

Add to that political and greed-based barriers between food and bellies, and you can see that we don’t need to be running into the arms of GMOs to solve our so-called starvation problem. That’s the same argument that got us hooked on pesticides and chemical fertilizers back in the day.

Emotionally effective, but not really based in fact. Subtract waste, greed and politics from food production and then see how much land we could still bank, even in an organic system.

Likes straight boys Re “Eagle Scout notes” (Upfront, March 14): Mormons are not OK with the idea of morally dumbing down the Boy Scouts of America with the admission of homoelective boys to the program.

Besides, a lawsuit would soon follow to permit homoelective adult leaders in as well; a coup de grace to the traditional essence of Boy Scouting.

I learned years ago that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints would pull its packs and troops out of the BSA and start their own scout program if the BSA ever allowed homoelectives in. I think that would be the best response; especially if morally straight members of other Christian churches were allowed to participate. Just as the Mormon Church has grown worldwide, so has organized militant homosexuality with the LGBT. The Grand Sierra Resort ad in Volume 20, Issue 13, page 2, celebrates the closing of Mustangs Dance Hall and Saloon. We who patronized Mustangs are not exactly celebrating the closure of the only place for country western dance in Reno, which the casino owners fail to realize, is still cowboy country.

Mustangs is closing prior to Reno Rodeo, which, in itself, is a direct insult and dismissal of Reno history and culture. Re “School proposal makes splash” (Feature story, May 16): Great idea. Let’s raid the school budgets and [have] less money allocated to the students and facilities. I am not a union person, but I can see where they would step into this issue. The idea of merit pay is not new. The constant issue becomes one of how you rate the teacher and at what increment. The current time warming a seat, what is your degree, and tenure are out of date with the needs and quality of education. I am sure the union would not allow any radical reform as this would result in some teachers with a pink slip. (What? Get rid of known poor teachers? Now, that is a concept.)

Given that, throwing crazy raises out there can’t solve anything. The idea of attracting good teachers is wonderful in concept, but vision without substance or plan is a waste of good air. No doubt the system needs an overhaul, but it would be difficult, read impossible, to bring the union, teachers and management together to make needed changes. I am sure he raised some attention, but so would a naked man running around Virginia Street ... probably.

Eat the poor Re “Republican Party rebirth” (The Liberty Belle, May 16): Chanelle Bessette started her column by asking us what comes to mind when you think of the word “Republican.” I’d like to give my answer.

I think of politicians who work slavishly for the rich and powerful.

Politicians who believe that the wealthy should have their taxes greatly reduced while the poor and middle class should have their government benefits slashed. Mitt Romney comes immediately to mind.

Why do any middle class Americans vote for Republicans?

Because the GOP knows how to use hot button issues. In some parts of this country, any Republican who claims to be against abortion and gun control will get millions of votes.

The GOP has been using that trick for many, many years, and as long as it works, they will continue to use it.

The rich are getting richer. Have you looked at the stock market lately? The poor are getting poorer.

And that situation will continue as long as the Republicans control the U.S. House of Representatives and Mitch McConnell controls the U.S. Senate. (If you think that Harry Reid is running the Senate, you don’t know what is going on.)

The march toward truth in labeling begins We live in a time of wonders. People can access all the knowledge of human existence through devices they carry in their front pockets. Scientists are cracking the genetic code of life. We are unlocking the mysterious building blocks of the universe. We are slowly bestowing equal rights upon all people on Earth.

But social and scientific change are slow, while greed moves like lightning. This past weekend, 350 people in Reno gathered to ask for something pretty simple of those who regulate greed: to know what they are eating.

While some countries around the world have chosen to make genetically modified organisms illegal, these concerned Americans asked that foods containing GMOs be labeled. Whether we consume unnatural foods is a choice we all should be able to make for ourselves.

Modern food science has changed. Things that were formerly considered “common sense” have been put to the test and found to be untrue. Not just untrue but wrong, yet companies that rake in the profits continue to promote their false arguments, enough to confuse the issue—sort of like the global warming deniers of the 20th century.

On the other side of the argument are individuals who make unsubstantiated claims. They’re loud enough to confuse the issue and undermine their own arguments.

But again, science ebbs and flows and advances.

Sometimes items, like eggs, that were considered tantamount to poison have been found to be wholesome.

At the same time, staples that contain processed sugars and grains have been shown to increase diabetes, Celiac disease and obesity.

Add into this the Darwinian aspect that people who were able to eat different types of foods in times of famine were more likely to survive, which explains why the OPINION

I settled down a long time ago, and I’ve lived my life open. That’s why. I don’t lie. I’ve never lied to my children, and I don’t lie to my wife.

progeny of certain regions of humans can tolerate dairy products better than others. But some scientists insist that all foods that were developed since the agricultural revolution be eschewed.

Simply put, just because a human being can put something in his or her mouth and excrete it out the other end does not mean it’s nutritious.

But greed gets in the way of science. The only reason tomatoes and almost all other vegetables were modified through selective breeding was to increase growers’ profits.

Few people would argue that the cauliflower that grows in the wild isn’t wholesome—except for the fact it doesn’t exist and never has.

It’s become almost a cliche in this culture that people who don’t have something to hide, don’t need to hide.

That’s repugnant to people who consider the right to privacy a human right. How much more repugnant is it for people who choose not to be violated by unnatural substances not to have the choice?

In terms of man’s time on Earth, GMOs have been part of the food chain for a time equivalent to a gnat’s exhalation. Foods that have been unnaturally combined at a genetic level in laboratories should be labeled as we simply cannot know what their long-term affects are on people, animals or the environment. This labeling will have consequences—likely cheaper prices for GMOs and an increased market share for organics.

We don’t imagine that we’ll see state laws requiring labeling in Nevada in the next two years, and it’s hard to pin hopes on our dysfunctional Congress, but knowing what we’re eating is a basic human right. Scientific and social change may come slowly, but in this age of wonders, they seem inevitable. Ω |

This is the end The End Game is upon us.

As the regular session of the 2013 Legislature stumbles to a close, here’s a guide to the final stretch.

There’s nothing special about a Special Session. While a special session may be needed for the by Legislature to complete its work, Sheila Leslie the goal is always to finish on time and avoid one, or two. (See 2003 for the most painful session closing of recent times.) Legislative leaders make it clear to members that bills either live or die in a regular session, so don’t count on “overtime” in a special session to get the job done.

The “I Need This Bill” Whine: Lower tier legislators make their personal legislative priorities known to leaders so they can return victorious to their district. When there was “pork,” good soldiers were rewarded with a “one-shot” appropriation for their project of choice. Since the recession, there hasn’t been any late money to fight

over, making the money committee chairmen less popular in the End Game. Long gone is the famous Moose Shake, a mournful shake of the head “no” by Ways and Means Chairman Morse “Moose” Arberry, demonstrated whenever approached by a wheedling legislator in the final days of a session, accompanied by the phrase: “There’s no dough.”

Instead of monetary rewards, there has been a trend of moving bills that really don’t do anything except give a legislator a “win.”

This is accomplished by taking everything controversial out of the bill, perhaps codifying what everyone knows is already current practice, thus allowing the legislator to proclaim victory.

You can also count on lobbyists to do everything in their power to get what they need, even if it’s a stupid borderline-illegal strategy dreamed up at the bar. Witness the mining lobbyists’ recent attempt to sell Assembly leadership on the idea of letting SJR 15 die in exchange for a voluntary $50

million cash payment from the industry.

“It’s a Legematic”: Certain “nothing” bills are kept alive, mostly through the well-known trick of sending them to a money committee under the guise of a fiscal note, because they’re in the right chapter of the statutes for a Legematic. The bill will be completely gutted and new language inserted that has nothing to do with the original intent.

The new bill is now a Legematic.

This move is seen less often these days since the departure of the Legematic Queen, Assemblywoman Chris Giunchiliani.

“Is this legislative time or real time?”: During the End Game, legislative leaders are super busy while the rank and file has plenty of time to stew and feel taken for granted. Unless they have a key bill to work on, there is really little to do except feel ignored and annoyed by the tedious “hurry up and wait” process, often late into the night and through the weekend.

People are exhausted and tired of Carson City and each other. Some legislators hole up in their office and sleep during the down time.

Others cross the street and drink.

Someone always gets sick and has to be taken to the hospital.

Despite leadership attempts to keep dirty laundry in the caucus room, hostilities tend to seep out, usually via a strategic whisper to a favored reporter. In the Assembly, there are far too many members with grievances to track down every leak. It’s just “part of the process,” another favored phrase used to explain the End Game to new members.

There will be meltdowns, public and private, and a surprise bill or two in the waning hours along with lots of vows of “I’m never coming back.” The fact is, most will. The drama, the attention, the moments of joy when a key issue like marriage equality passes are addicting.

Until the next End Game begins. Ω

Take back your health care Health care has always been a hot button issue in the United States, but the recent implementation of President Obama’s brand of Affordable Care has made the complexities of health care even more foreboding. With a slew of insurance requirements and crippling costs, it’s no surprise that by Chanelle Bessette many Americans find it less stressful to delay getting the health care they need.

Here in Northern Nevada, narrow definitions of what constitutes Native American heritage have restricted the ability of some members of the Tribal Health Clinic to receive health care. Those who are descendents of tribe members or who have blood from two tribes but not enough to qualify them as members of either are at risk of having to pay an annual fine of $695 for a lack of insurance, according to a recent Las Vegas Sun article. These narrow definitions restricting health care to Native Americans—which has until now been a guaranteed right for tribal members, as dictated in treaties with the U.S. government—has now

threatened around 7,000 members of the Reno-Sparks Tribal Health Clinic with having to pay the fine.

The Native American population is not the only group finding it difficult to afford high insurance rates. Under the Affordable Care Act, business owners have to take on much of the cost of health care, and this has already led to layoffs at many businesses across the country.

The answer to affordable health care is remarkably simple, although it may seem drastic at first. The key comes from deregulation, not only of governmental licensing requirements for medical institutions—including schools, pharmacies and hospitals—but also for medical personnel like nurses and doctors.

Insurance companies should be deregulated as well to cover the bare minimum, thereby restoring personal freedom and responsibility for events that are within the individual’s control—this step would also entail de-incentivizing risky behavior such as tobacco consumption or obesity-related illnesses. In addition,

government restrictions on medical tools and medicine should be lifted, in essence doing away with the Food and Drug Administration and setting prices of pharmaceuticals back to an affordable and efficient level.

Picturing a United States without the security blanket of the FDA or governmental medical licensing might be scary at first. After all, these institutions were first put in place to reduce occurrences of market failure and to reduce transaction costs that come from unequal information between consumers and healthcare providers. The free-market alternative, however, can do the same thing more efficiently.

In the absence of a tax-draining government institution like the FDA, private companies that offer voluntary accreditation for businesses and products would become more established and force people to be more mindful about what they are consuming. Costs and prices would be driven down, and, in an effort to both gain customers and to avoid product liability suits, pharmaceutical and

tool manufacturers would increase in quality and more businesses would provide guarantees.

Reputation would become much more important, as well. This kind of process is already working when it comes to non-governmental organizations providing accreditation to companies that sustainably harvest rainforest timber. By voluntarily applying for accreditation, companies can take control over how they are perceived by the public, and they will strive to make their products stand out against the rest with greater transparency about their methods of production or medical services.

Medical care and insurance is a multibillion dollar industry across the country, and it is one that many people struggle to pay for. Socialized health care may be implemented in other Western countries such as France and Canada, but the United States’ history of free market interactions and potential for a large shift in infrastructure could be a rich environment in which to take back control of our health-care system. Ω

Constitutional amendment on ballot Nevada voters will get to vote next year on whether to continue for the mining industry something that no other industry enjoys— a tax loophole written right into the Nevada Constitution.

On May 23, the Nevada Assembly gave final legislative approval to Senate Joint Resolution 15 of the 2011 Nevada Legislature. The measure needed to pass two legislatures before going to voters in 2014.

Opponents of the measure argued that mining might leave the state to take its business to places where mining faces lower taxes. Under existing Nevada law, mining companies—mostly foreign mining firms—can be taxed only on their net proceeds, a bargain when compared with taxes imposed in other jurisdictions in the United States and around the world. In addition, it caps the net proceeds tax at 5 percent.

The change would put mining on the same level as all other industries, none of which enjoy constitutional tax breaks.

S.J.R 15 passed the Senate on April 1 by a 17-4 vote. Senators representing Washoe County who voted against passage were Don Gustavson and James Settlemeyer.

It passed the Assembly by 26-15. Assemblymembers representing Washoe who opposed it were Ira Hansen, Pat Hickey, Randy Kirner and Pete Livermore.

Las Vegas Sun reporter Patrick Coolican brought the case to light on May 20, reporting that Sean Steele was convicted of misdemeanor battery after he allegedly caused what an examining nurse called “ragged lacerations” to the victim’s vaginal tissues while he was drinking. The Medical Board of California found that his conduct “demonstrates an unfitness to practice medicine” and revoked his license. A California Superior Court ruling upheld the revocation after Steele argued that his private behavior is unrelated to his performance as a doctor.

Steele, a resident of Las Vegas and a graduate of Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica and Grand Bahama, was licensed to practice in California on July 31, 2002, and the license was revoked on April 17, 2012.

Whatever action the Nevada Board of Medical Examiners took is not accessible to the public on its website. A list of doctors disciplined does not include Steele’s name, and the site has no search function. Coolican wrote that the only action taken was what the board calls a “nonpublic action.”

The California Board has information on Steele posted at http://tinyurl.com/om3ny4j. California attorney Russell Lungerich, who represents Steele, did not respond to a request for comment.

Small counties heard from Most of the attention given during the 2013 Nevada Legislature to the tie between higher education and economic development has involved the urban areas. But rural Nevada is also speaking up.

“The latest legislative funding proposals for Nevada’s rural community colleges will do serious harm to the economic development work now employed through a partnership between Northern Nevada Development Authority and Western Nevada College,” said a statement from NNDA. “Nevada cannot ignore the opportunity to respond to the needs of our business community.”

NNDA executive director Rob Hooper added, “Regional employers have been demanding a skilled workforce and to slow down the engine that creates them is sending the train backwards.”

Parlor gambling The laid-back setting of neighborhood slot joints is targeted A bill cracking down on slot parlors in Clark and Washoe counties has been approved by the Nevada Senate by and is racing toward passage in the Dennis Myers Assembly during the last days of the Nevada Legislature.

Aimed mainly at the Dotty’s chain and similar pocket-sized places, Senate Bill 416 will require that future parlors have a bar and restaurant and be at least 2,500 square feet. The bill also goes into detail about what constitutes a bar and restaurant.

Should state government intervene in a commercial dispute between large and small gambling?

The bill was passed at the behest of the big boys in the casino industry, so its chance of reaching final enactment before the lawmakers go home is excellent.

The bill raises the question of whether the state should take sides in competition within an industry, using law as a weapon for one side. It’s a matter that arises frequently in Carson City, as when, for example—in 2011 and then again this year—organic food stores asked for a law that traditional grocery store foods

be labeled as products of genetic engineering (see Green, page 11).

The state says in such “restricted license” places as Dotty’s—which can include taverns, slot parlors, sports bars— gambling should be “incidental” to the business’s main function, but that is not how things have worked out in some small arcades, where food and drink facilities serve as window dressing for the slots that are the dominant feature.

Moreover, some of those facilities look unlike customary casino settings with their flashing lights and high noise levels. The parlors are quiet and low-key. Their bars are often brightly lit, and the restaurants resemble snack bars.

Why that is bad—other than that it drains money from large casinos— was never clearly explained during legislative hearings. The lack of full kitchens also allows the small businesses to permit smoking.

As it became apparent that the definition of “incidental” was evolving in Nevada, the lawmakers could have changed the law to foster those kinds of parlors.

Instead, under pressure from big casino lobbyists, they put new burdens on the small places.

“Protection of this industry— there can’t be a higher priority of this body than getting the number one industry in this state right,” lobbyist Pete Ernaut told the

lawmakers, a remark that generated considerable comment. Ernaut represents the Nevada Resort Association (NRA), a large-casino group.

Sean Higgins of the Nevada Restricted Gaming Association said the NRA is telling the smaller businesses, “Be successful, but not too successful. Because if you’re too successful, we’ll try to push you back down.”

As traditional casinos have taken a beating from tribal gambling in California and then from the recession, Dotty’s has thrived, and in some ways its facilities seem innovative, presenting a different look than traditional casinos. The big casinos could have competed by imitating them or buying them out. Instead, they sought intervention by the state against the parlors.

There are 86 “freestanding” Dotty’s around the state, 28 in the north. Dotty’s also operates inside businesses owned by others, such as Kmarts and Food 4 Less grocery stores. Dotty’s operates inside the Kmart on Oddie Boulevard in Sparks, for instance. All of these outlets together come to 109 locations.

The chain employs 800 people, and on May 6 the corporation announced three new locations—in a news release that also unsubtly detailed charitable giving by the corporation and its workers.

Dotty’s seems to have a particular success with one demographic.

It is not uncommon for all the customers in a Dotty’s to be women, a fair number in their 40s and above.

On a Yelp website, one Reno woman who signed herself Anne V wrote, “Dotty’s is nice for the person that wants to be left alone to do their own thing, go in [and] gamble with a drink and a smoke.

No frills, no trashy bartenders, no annoying drunk people. Just a simple place to play some slots and not be noticed.” She suggests that Dotty’s add television sets. But that kind of relaxed ambience— which the large casinos do not offer—will become illegal in future parlors as soon as the bill passes the Assembly and Gov. Brian Sandoval signs the measure.

Emigrants crossing Nevada in the 1800’s were dramatically challenged because of the 300 mountain ranges which lay across their path to California. Pioneers, passing through the Black Rock Desert in covered wagons, described the harshness of this vast landscape in their journals calling it a “barren waste land.”

The desert and the surrounding mountains actually have a rich dramatic geological history of ancient oceans and colliding island chains. Enormous glacial era lakes once filled the basins with abundant marine life.

Ancient Lake Lahontan, where the Black Rock Desert is now, was 514 feet above and about 10,000 feet below today’s surface.

Climate adjustments brought less water to the region, finally exposing a thin surface which now allows for a high density of hot springs in this National Conservation Area.

Black Rock Point, the deserts namesake, is made of andesitic lavas and fossil-bearing limestone. A collision with the Oceanic Plate and the North American Continental Plate created this anomaly, where marine fossils can be found embedded in the blackened limestone. To the north, the High Rock Canyon exposes layers of thick rhyolite, welded tuffs and lava flows eroded by water, exposing dramatic landforms and canyons.

A rich petrified forest, where over 250 Giant Sequoia once stood, tells of a magnificent landscape which was destroyed by volcanic ash 15 to 16 million years ago. Since 1965, this site has been protected by the Bureau of Land Management. It’s important to note, that collecting petrified wood and fossils is prohibited here.

Today, this territory is called the Black Rock Desert - High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trail National Conservation Area. The Friends of Black Rock - High Rock, thirty-two weeks a year, conducts stewardship and conservation projects protecting it and educating people about this ancient 1.2 million acres of magnificent landscape, it’s wildlife and natural resources.

Hundreds joined the March Against Monsanto in downtown Reno Last Saturday morning, about 350 people came out to the March Against Monsanto from the Bruce Thompson Federal Building to the Reno City Plaza, where there was a rally. by Sage Leehey The purpose of this march was to stand up for labeling of foods with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and to stand up against the major s age l@ company behind them, Monsanto. news review.c om “We just want to bring some awareness to the general public about genetically modified organisms that are being put into our food without our knowing about it,” said Kiki Corbin, an organizer of the event and board member and Director of Label GMO Nevada project. “We’re asking for labeling in lots of different ways—in national legislature, in state legislature and initiatives and in companies. Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s have come out with theirs. Trader Joe’s has already had all their suppliers with their private label switch to no GMOs.” It took place nationwide at around the same time on May 25. The Reno branch of this event was headed by the Label GMO Nevada project of the nonprofit called the Grassroots Action Network. At the rally, they had a booth set up with petitions, brochures and other information for the general public. Another board member of this project and organizer of this event, Sharon Davidson, was pleased with the turnout of the march.

“We had wanted a peaceful and enthusiastic event, and that’s exactly what we got,” Davidson said. “We met many groups and individuals with like synergies who have volunteered to help us using their various skills.

Our intent was education and awareness-raising, plus providing a venue for people to voice their beliefs and emotions. We definitely achieved those things.”

The march was indeed peaceful, and some of the marchers brought their children to participate. According to Davidson and Corbin, this was their intent in planning the event. There was an art table run by an art teacher from Carson City for children at the rally.

Corbin said that children are a big part of why she organized the march and why she continues to fight for GMO labeling.

“I’m here for my grandkids,” Corbin said. “For them to have an opportunity to be healthy and to have children when they grow up. For them to be able to think and be able to learn. GMOs affect all of those things. … This is an abomination.”

It became a larger issue in her life when she became a member of the Nevada Organic Council, but she says it has now affected her on a more personal level.

“Honestly for me, early on it became a spiritual issue, and I think that’s the primary reason I’m willing to work for this cause,” Davidson said. “GMOs negatively affect all of life and the well being of all living things—not just humans, but all animals, insects, plants, the soil and water...

This was a painful realization for me, but also an inspiration to do what I could for the cause.” Ω

A

professor and his boat are just a speck on the surface of frigid Fallen Leaf Lake west of Tahoe.

The line attached to his experimental vibrating fishing lure cuts the glassy water, trolling the deep blue for a big, hungry and unlucky fish.

It catches, the professor leans closer, the pole bends, but the line snaps, and his hopes sink into the dark water. But this isn’t about the one that got away. It’s a true tale: How John Kleppe, a retired University of Nevada, Reno electrical engineering professor, caught the big one, and how he is still wrestling his controversial catches to shore.

It began 30 years ago. He would toss out his line and troll around the lake and hit snags like any fisherman would. Until one day, “I looked up and triangulated that I was at the same spot over and over again when it [hit the snags], and I said, ‘I need to figure out what this is.’”

He turned to his high-tech fish finder for answers. The water below was 150 feet deep, his line was down only 40 feet, and the screen showed the water was as dead as space. What invisible force might be clutching his experimental lures and trying to steal them away into the Tahoe abyss?

Kleppe will never forget the day he took the bait: “I need to get a diver and figure out what it is.”

It was 1997 before he got a diver to go down into the fishing lure Bermuda Triangle. The diver splashed in with his black rubber wet suit, tanks and mask, breathing compressed air in long loud heaves like Darth Vader.

The bubbles of breath rose toward Kleppe as he watched the diver kick and fall into the high-altitude lake.

“At that altitude, they can only stay down for about 20 minutes,” Kleppe said. “He went down.” And just a few minutes later, “He came up shaken.”

Since that day, Kleppe says what he found has stirred the pot of scientific debate and sparked the realization that mysterious legendary things of the deep do exist—just not as we

ever imagined. Finding mysterious things and telling people about them is fraught with snags, and he’s had to be careful.

“People are likely to put you in a boobie hatch,” he said. “You lose your credibility if you move too far beyond the existing box. You have to be patient, you stick to your guns and you still might be wrong.”

He didn’t start to talk to his neighbors about the strange snags in the mysterious lake until after he had evidence in front of his very own eyes.

“When I heard it was medieval, I knew we had to search for more,” Kleppe said.

Sixteen years later, his work has gained acceptance.

In November 2011, he co-wrote and published an article in Quaternary Science Reviews.

It’s the story of these forests that are still standing, dating back up to 3,232 years. That story represents 200 years of growth during mega-droughts that were possibly happening every thousand years. With the last one in 1215, it could mean we’re approaching another one now.

“The magic number is 60 percent of normal precipitation, and it is like what we are going through this year,” Kleppe warned. “So you will see the

reservoirs being depleted. We plan buildings to withstand an earthquake. We need to do the same thing for a megadrought. The best solution is to store water.”

He suggested finding natural chasms in the ground and to start storing water so that it just doesn’t just evaporate into thin air as it did during these historic megadroughts.

So, why are we finding out about the forest now? “Oh, they are huge, and they don’t show up on a fish finder. That’s why no one has discovered them,” Kleppe said.

There have been some rough seas, battling skepticism, which is fine, he said. But there was also jealousy.

Others dismissed the upright forest, telling him Moses drowned the trees.

“There couldn’t be such a drought,” he recalled someone telling him. “That was denial.”

“Not discovered here! How could that be? No way in hell!” He recalled people questioning him. He said now there are two other detractors of the warning presented by these monoliths of the deep.

“There were people saying to me, ‘What governor wants to face on his watch that they will have to prepare for a 200-year drought?’ The other detractor is that we think that global warming is much more of a danger than a megadrought.”

Wherever you stand in the debate about what should be done, if anything, Kleppe likes to stand with the evidence laying all around him.

His yard is littered with chopped up sections of the ancient wood. As he said before, he could be wrong because he only studied 15 trees in the lake. “That many trees does not science make,” he said. So, he’s looking for funding to study 88 more trees and confirm his theory of a routine 200-year megadrought every 1,000 years.

Kleppe wanted to see what was in the depths for himself. He bought a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to motor around the depths with lights and video tape every moment.

“I have a whole lot of nothing,” he said.

Watching his videos of particles floating by is like being in space on the Enterprise, watching stars shoot by. Every once in a while a fish or a tree appears out of the darkness.

“It is sort of amazing because when you think about it, no humans have seen a lot of what we see,” Kleppe said. “It is like walking on the moon.”

Sometimes he follows the divers remotely and watches them. That led him to the next strange thing.

“I was watching that diver sawing off a branch and he knocked something that floated off like a jelly fish, right off the tree!” Kleppe said. “And so that is what triggered me, and I was like, ‘What is that?’ And so we forgot all about the tree and followed that.”

He doesn’t recall exactly what happened after following the blob.

But he has videos to show today. It is fascinating to observe in silence as the ROV approaches the tops of the ancient forest spires and the living creatures swaying in the current.

They look huge on the screen and in pictures, but they’re really just about the size of a golf ball.

“What we are seeing here is a thing, which is like a balloon of green gel, and it will eventually look, as you will see in a minute, like a baggie, and then like it is creating a gas in it and then float away.”

He collected specimens of the thing, put them in jars with their native Fallen Leaf lake water and FedExed them to a couple of scientists. In 2003 and 2004, he got some answers back—cryptic, scientific, some definite, and some conflicting.

“He sent me one, and I didn’t know what it was, so I sectioned one,” said Gary Williams, an invertebrate zoologist with the California Academy of Sciences. “I took that to a microscope. You can’t really call them plants or animals because they are between both.”

He called them “strange lake beasts in the Tahoe basin” in a one-page description that he titled “Science Now.” He wrote that they were little-studied organisms with two whip-like flagella emanating from the anterior end. He called them cryptomonads, basically bags or masses of single-celled organisms of which there are 100 different species, some of which feed on the dead wood of trees. But Paul Kugrens, biologist with Colorado State University wrote to Kleppe telling him, “They definitely are not cryptomonads.” Instead, he called them Ciliata.

He says that there’s room for interpretation in what they are.

“Now, you are getting in the middle of the argument,” he said. “It is still not settled in my mind.” By sending the blobs to a zoologist and a biologist, he had fanned the flames of a long-running debate over nebulous creatures like these.

It turns out, there are a whole bunch of organisms that turn light into energy like plants but also act like animals. For decades the classification of plant versus animal has caused a tug of war between scientists.

“Thus botanists claim some [organisms], zoologists claim some [organisms], and many are claimed by both,” wrote R.L. Kotpal in Modern Text Book of Zoology: Invertebrates. The solution, according to Kotpal, is to remove Kugren’s blob classification of Ciliata from the animal kingdom and put it in the kingdom Protista. On that, the two scientists agreed, but that doesn’t make it any easier.

“A protist is simply something that is not an animal, or a plant, or a fungus,” according to the University of California Santa Barbara, Science Line website. “In many regards [it] may still represent the scrap pile of taxonomy—it is where all of the misfits are thrown.”

“Two different biologists disagreed,” Kleppe said. “I am not a biologist, so that’s why I put them on the back burner.” Kleppe went back to focusing on the dead forest of the deep and left the mysterious moving globs alone.

But they didn’t leave him alone. In the past, the things were only found clinging to the ancient trees way out in the lake. But then in July last year, he found one had come a lot closer and attached itself to his steel pier.

“If they eat wood, what was it doing on my pier?” he asked. “It was

It is listed on the U.S. Geological Survey website as a nonindigenous aquatic species.”

This was the result of rumors, unsettled science and possibly bogus reports. Many in Tahoe had been saying that jellyfish were found in Fallen Leaf lake and confusing them with Kleppe’s globs. It didn’t help that scientists from the University of Massachusetts to the California Academy of Sciences have published online articles calling the globs “jelly balls.”

“This whole article is sort of misleading because [jellyfish] are totally different kingdoms of life,” said Jeff Baguley of UNR’s biology department of one. “This is a really misleading article right here, and I don’t really agree with the way it is worded.”

“That is the whole thing, you have to use a common language with the public,” invertebrate zoologist Gary Williams of CAS responded.

Another potentially confusing issue appeared on the highlyrespected United States Geological Survey invasive species list. There was a report that jellyfish had been found in Fallen Leaf in 1999. That report is out of scientific character for the agency. It only cited a sighting of a “jellyfish” that was submitted to another website even though,

according to the notes, no samples were taken or studied for that matter.

“They (the blobs) are suddenly in the headlines because there is so much concern about invasive species,” Kleppe said. “Maybe it is society driving the science, but that doesn’t mean you kill everything you don’t understand.”

To try to filter the confusion, Kleppe has pointed the U.S. Geological Survey and Tahoe Resource Conservation District back to the two scientists who studied the blobs before. Paul Kugrens of Colorado State University has since passed away, but Williams is still at the California Academy of Sciences.

“It is not anything bad that has to be eradicated,” Williams said.

“There is no reason to go out and destroy them. There is no indication that it is coming from another planet to destroy us. I am totally amused by this.”

And in the rapidly changing world of science, he says the former tug of war over plants verses animals is now “out-of-date thinking. New concepts of the vastness of biodiversity have revolutionized things.”

But there are still many unanswered questions about the blobs.

“Who knows, the actual species at Fallen Leaf Lake may be new to science,” Williams wrote in an email.

“It is difficult to identify microscopic forms of life that are only rarely seen and described by a very few people in the world! We now know there are plants, animals, fungi and a huge diversity of organisms that do not fit those into these three groups and were once lumped into a giant hodgepodge mega-group called Protista.”

For Williams, the mystery is settled.

“The newer name for the group should be Chromist, forget about exactly what kind (cryptomonad, chloromonad, Ophrydium, etc.).

There is no evidence that they have been introduced by birds. There are native species of Chromists throughout freshwater lakes of the world,” he wrote.

But while we may know what they are, we don’t know much about them.

“Yeah, very little, there is very little known about these things that are not well-defined plants or animals,” Williams said. “In fact, I don’t know any protozoologists out there.”

If the public interest in Tahoe is going to drive new questions about

these golf ball-sized globs, Kleppe is ready to step up to the plate. He has some good questions.

“They could be an indication of clarity,” he said. “They could be cleaning the lake. We should study what they are and what they do.”

He thinks that a good place to start would be if someone aimed cameras at the blobs and did some time lapse photography to watch what they do, how they change and grow.

But as he said earlier, sometimes bubbles get burst. In one email, Kugrens called the blobs “Ophrydium,” which the University of Massachusetts Amherst lovingly refers to as “pond scum.” But even pond scum has mysteries.

“It is still a mystery to scientists why the gel matrix forms or why it disappears, but some scientists believe the day length, the amount of sunshine and/or the temperature of the water play as much a crucial role as individual microorganisms in the life span of the green jelly balls. The only thing known about the formation of the colonies is that Ophrydium individuals or zooids are capable of separating from their holdfast roots in the gel and swimming freely to populate other areas. These free swimmers are called telotrochs.

They usually attach themselves to suitable substrates such as aquatic plants and then return to the immobile zooid form.”

The ball or masses of singlecelled—not plant, not animal—pond scum living in an ancient forest is clearly feeding imaginations and calling our attention back to those ancient monoliths that may be an indicator of the drought we may face

tomorrow. Two mysteries of the deep, clinging to each other, each with stories to tell.

Kleppe, the fisherman, caught these ancient trees and mysterious blobs. But more importantly, he caught and released public curiosity and imagination about the present, the past, the future and the unknown.

It’s a fish tale of the sort from which legends are made. Ω

Movie reviewer Bob Grimm weighs in on this summer’s upcoming batch of new flicks

Yes, I know.

A couple of the big summer movies have hit screens already, and I’m a little late to the preview party. There was this whole thing with the dog being sick, and I’ve been floating my favorite toy boats in the Truckee … I’m just a little behind and out of sorts.

Please accept my apologies. Between you, my God (Martin Scorsese) and my mother (Frances Grimm), I make the solemn oath to you that I will not be late again until the next time I’m late.

Iron Man 3, The Great Gatsby, and Star Trek Into Darkness got things rolling in grand big box office fashion. Iron Man 3 getting butts in seats is no big surprise, but considering the critical drubbing and “arty” nature of Gatsby, its success is a bit stunning. Looks like somebody knew what they were doing when they delayed the release from Christmas last year until this summer. I can safely say I found this trio of films equally cool on an entertainment level.

So, yeah, we’re a few weeks in, but there are plenty of summer movies left, and here’s a sample of what’s coming your way.

After Earth (May 31): Oh lordy, they are still giving M. Night Shyamalan money to make movies, and now his ego is being matched up with star Will Smith’s gargantuan ego in this post apocalyptic sci-fi thing. Shyamalan made three good movies (Signs being my favorite) and then he just went bat shit with films like The Village and The Happening.

He only co-wrote the screenplay, which means it has a shot at being semi-cohesive.

The Purge (May 31): Ethan Hawke gets another summer movie with this freaky looking sci-fi about a future where, on one night a year, people are allowed to commit any crimes they want. This has ‘feel good movie of the summer’ written all over it.

The Internship (June 7): I know we’re not supposed to judge a movie by its trailer, but the trailer for this comedic reteaming of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson didn’t make me laugh once.

Not once.

Much Ado About Nothing (June 7): Joss Whedon follows up The Avengers with a low budget, modern take on the Shakespeare classic.

Man of Steel (June 14): And within this film lies the biggest hopes for the summer.

Superman got a bad rap in his last outing. I, for one, liked Superman Returns and truly dug Brandon Routh. Warner Brothers tries to revive the biggest superhero of them all with a reboot co-produced

by Christopher Nolan. It looks like some of the darkness that ran through his Batman movies has spread to Superman. I must admit, the preview trailers are giving me chills. As for Henry Cavill, he hasn’t impressed me in other films, but he looks good in the tights. And we’re talking about tights that don’t have the famed Superman red briefs!

That’s kind of messed up.

This Is the End (June 14): This looks to be in competition with The Hangover Part III for the year’s biggest comedy (see Film, page 22). Writing partners Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg make their directorial debuts with this, a tale of the apocalypse as seen from inside James Franco’s house.

Too many funny guys in this movie for it to bomb out. That just can’t happen, right?

The Bling Ring (June 14): I’m hoping this film about young girls going on a crime spree, based upon a true story, is better than the similarly themed Spring Breakers. Sofia Coppola directs Emma Watson stealing things from celebrities.

Monsters University (June 21): Is it just me, or does this sequel to the 2001 heart-warmer look kind of lame? I don’t really know if I need to see these cartoon monsters in college, and the sound of Billy Crystal’s voice has not endeared itself to me over the years.

I used to love the guy, but I sort of left his fan camp after Mr. Saturday Night. (Yep, I just dropped a Mr. Saturday Night reference in a 2013 Summer Movie Preview. Thank you, thank you very much.)

World War Z (June 21): Brad Pitt’s zombie flick has gone through reshoots, and that’s always a worrisome thing.

Still, I love the zombies piling up on each other in the previews, and the plane disaster looks freaky. Not sure what they are rating this, but if it comes in at PG-13 … LAME!

White House Down (June 28) Following in the footsteps of Olympus Has Fallen, we get another film where the president and his pad are in jeopardy. This time we get Jamie Foxx as the president and Channing Tatum as the hero.

The Lone Ranger (July 5) The idea of Johnny Depp playing Tonto, and his crazy getup, have me cautious about this one.

Gore Verbinski directs, with Armie Hammer as the title character. If I had to pick five bombs this summer before they came out, I would bet this one could be very, very bad.

The Way, Way Back (July 5) Sam Rockwell is in this coming-of-age comedy. This is all you need to know.

Pacific Rim (July 12) Big alien monster type things strike the Earth and huge robots piloted by humans are sent to defend. This looks amazing, and Guillermo del Toro directs, so this will be something to see. I’m hoping this puts Michael Bay’s big robots to shame.

Grown Ups 2 (July 12) I miss Adam Sandler. That dude used to make me laugh and laugh hard. The first Grown Ups was one of his worst movies. Looks like his Sandler comedy slump will continue with this one.

Only God Forgives (July 19): Director Nicolas Winding Refn reteams with his Drive star Ryan Gosling for a revenge flick that is allegedly the most ungodly violent film ever made if you believe some of the early reviews coming out of Cannes. There are critics out there who are irredeemably angry at this film. I can’t wait to see it.

R.I.P.D. (July 19): Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds as dead cops going after dead bad guys. Pretty funny that Bridges is doing a thinly veiled version of his True Grit character.

The Wolverine (July 26): This one is going to be a better offering than the first solo outing for Hugh Jackman’s piece of the X-Men because it’s not just Wolverine … it’s “THE” Wolverine.

The original Wolverine movie title didn’t have the “The” in it, making it a non-starter from the get-go.

Blue Jasmine (July 26): Usually I’m all like, “Woody Allen can go screw himself!” but his latest has Louis C.K. in it, so I’m curious.

The Smurfs 2 (August 2): The poster for this thing has a Smurf doing the peace sign with his two fingers which, of course, can also stand for the number two. Somebody got paid a lot of money to come up with that.

Elysium (August 9) From the director of District 9, this stars Matt Damon (with a shaved head) in the future where the Earth has gone to shit, and the rich live in space. Jodie Foster costars.

We’re the Millers (August 9): Jason Sudeikis recruits a strange group of folks, including Jennifer Aniston as a stripper, to play his family in a pot smuggling scheme. From the director of Dodgeball, this looks pretty funny.

Kick Ass 2 (August 16) Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse all return for a new round of comic vigilantism. Jim Carrey joins the cast as Colonel Stars and Stripes, and all signs point to hilarious as far as his participation is concerned. Ω

“There’s some strange energy in these hills,” says Frances Melhop about Virginia City.

Frances Melhop For the first two years that Frances Melhop lived in Reno, she felt out of place. by “I’ve never been in a place like Reno,” Brad Bynum she says. “They don’t seem to value aging. … In Italy, they see the beauty in a building bradb@ news r evie w.c om that’s falling apart.”

She was born and raised in New Zealand. She spent 10 years living and working in Australia, honing her craft as a photographer, and then spent the next decade in Italy. While there, she built an impressive resume shooting editorial fashion spreads for European editions of Vogue, Elle and other magazines.

She felt creative freedom and support Frances melhop’s down the rabbit in Italy. to history that had fed her muse in Italy.

Until she visited Virginia City.

“This place is brilliant,” she says.

“I just completely love it. I can’t get enough. I’m just drawn to it. There’s some strange energy in these hills. I always feel 100 percent here.”

Her connection to Virginia City was anchored at St. Mary’s Art and Retreat Center, a surreal hospital-turned-artscenter on the eastern edge of the mountain town. She stayed there last winter and forged such a deep connection that she’s now the center’s creative director.

In addition to Melhop’s current exhibition there, the center also presently boasts artworks by some of the area’s better known artists, like Edw Martinez and Erik Holland.

But the “kooky oldness,” as she calls it, of the building seems to fit especially well with Melhop’s work. Her exhibition, Down the Rabbit Hole, is a retrospective spanning the last 15 years.

The works are large-scale prints of photographs—many originally done as

magazine fashion shoots—depicting fantastical images that draw heavily from the iconography of well known fairy tales and fantasy stories like “Snow White,” “Thumbelina” and Alice in Wonderland.

“Poison Apple” depicts two hands: one that looks very old, with long red fingernails, and another that looks young, slender and very pale. Suspended midair between the two hands, as if dropping from the old to the new, is a heart-shaped apple. It’s a clear allusion to “Snow White.” Both hands are bedecked with jewelry—unlike most of the images, which were originally for editorial photos, this one was for a jewelry ad.

With the familiar iconography and glossy production value, the works have appealing, broad accessibility.

Melhop attributes her interest in fairy tales in part to growing up in the fantastical realm of New Zealand, where, she says, she spent her time “lying under trees, eating marmalade toast and reading.”

She has a few upcoming projects: She’s the creative director of a new fashion company, Privato Inc., based out of New York, and she’s doing a series of portraits of Nevada artists, starting with some of the artists associated with the annual Nada Dada art event.

Thumbelina is an especially important, recurring figure in Melhop’s work because she likes playing what she calls “the game of scale”—juxtaposing large and small.

Human models often appear in miniature settings. In “The Wishing Tree,” for example, a girl in a fashionable red coat appears to engage in the Japanese custom of hanging a written wish on a tree, but the tree is actually a Bonsai tree blown up to the scale of a willow—or has the girl been shrunk down?

And yet, though the senses of scale and perspective are skewed, everything seems in place, at home. Ω

were excited that maybe we could get some Guinness but sadly, they’re still awaiting their liquor license. Besides the Guinness stuff, there are also photographs taken by a local artist. The setup is more for takeout, but the space is comfortable enough that you can easily enjoy a meal there.

The majority of the space is occupied by the kitchen area, which has a huge flat oven. One of the friendly staff members working at the counter explained they’re considering baking their own bread, but in the meantime, they get all of their bread locally. Box Eatery offers soups, sandwiches and salads along with quiches and casseroles. All of the soups are made from scratch and usually they have about five varieties to choose from, but when we

were there on a Saturday, there were only two soups to choose from, tomato bisque and chicken enchilada.

I decided to go with one of the daily specials, which was vegetable lasagna ($6). My lasagna, like all dishes served, arrived in a box, hence the name Box Eatery. Inside was a large square of lasagna accompanied by a side of spinach, tomatoes and balsamic and some sliced foccacia bread. The sauce on the lasagna was thick, and there was a ton of cheese and spinach.

I liked the lasagna, but it seemed like it might have been cooked earlier, then reheated, because it wasn’t quite warm enough for my liking. I wished the foccacia bread had been heated up as well.

Brett went with the bowl of soup and half sandwich combo ($7). His roasted turkey sandwich arrived on foccacia, and eyeing the sandwich, I was a little jealous I didn’t order one. The half sandwich was enormous. In addition to the turkey, the sandwich also came with provolone, prosciutto and spicy aioli along with fresh tasting veggies. I liked the sandwich, but I loved the tomato bisque. The bisque was rich and creamy, and had this been my order, I would have dipped my sandwich in it.

Box Eatery has a grilled cheese sandwich on the menu that could pair perfectly with the soup.

Jared went with another daily special, the spicy macaroni and cheese ($6) and a bowl of chicken enchilada soup ($5). The spicy macaroni and cheese had lots of thick creamy cheese and a serious kick. I really liked this dish but once I had the chicken enchilada soup, nothing else mattered. The soup had huge chunks of chicken along with a great corn taste. The soup was rich, hearty and fresh and had me thinking about getting a tub of it to go.

Overall, Box Eatery has fresh food, large portions and low prices. They also add a tiny cookie to your order, and who doesn’t like a tiny cookie? The staff seemed to care genuinely about the food they serve and the customers.

Everything I tried was good, but the soup was definitely the standout, so get up here and get a bowl of soup and don’t forget the cookie. Ω

The Hangover Part III I had hopes for The Hangover Part III, the conclusion to director Todd Phillips’ trilogy about a group of guys who get into a lot of R-rated trouble after ingesting bad stuff for their brains.

In retrospect, I feel like a major idiot for having high hopes for this one.

The Hangover franchise, as it turns out, should’ve stopped at one movie. Phillips and by his gang of actors captured comedic magic Bob Grimm when an awkward bearded man drugged his buddies at a bachelor party, which led bgr imm@ newsr evie w.c om to them kidnapping Mike Tyson’s tiger and many other sordid acts.

The Hangover Part II was a carbon copy of that film shipped from Las Vegas to Thailand. It had about 15 percent of the original’s laughs, but, while being a supreme disappointment, it wasn’t a complete loss.

Part III is a total garbage movie, a film lacking any sense of purpose and woefully lacking in the laugh department.

Phillips tries to make a completely different sort of film with his final chapter, and he sort of succeeds in that while the first film had many laughs and the second had a few, this movie has just one or two.

It actually doesn’t even come off as a comedy. It’s crime thriller/kidnap movie, just about the last scenario we need to see the Wolf Pack (Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms) going through.

The movie starts with a giraffe beheading that I will actually count as one of the film’s laughs. It then moves into an intervention where Galifianakis’s Alan is told that he will be going away for a little while. Alan does some very awkward crying, and I laughed a little more.

Then the boys hit the road, and the laughter stops cold as if some sort of movie

demon sprung from the ground and smacked the film over its head with his mighty “No Laughs Anymore” sledgehammer.

An evil crime lord (John Goodman) forces them off the road and introduces the moronic plot thread that this movie is really about: The search for Mr. Chow, played by the increasingly annoying Ken Jeong.

Goodman kidnaps Doug (Justin Bartha) because he’s a boring character and writing anything interesting for him is a task, so let’s just get him off the screen, shall we?

The trio go on a search for Chow and regrettably find him. This leads to some nonsense involving stolen gold, a return to Vegas for a cocaine party, and some surprisingly violent moments involving guns.

This Hangover film has a pretty big body count, and that’s not something I expect from a Hangover film. I expect people humping tigers or the Helms character comically removing his pancreas with tweezers while on heroin.

There’s a sequence atop Caesars Palace in Vegas that looks cool, and Melissa McCarthy shows up for a not altogether terrible cameo.

Galifianakis seems to be the only one in the trio really trying, with most of his shtick falling flat this time out. Cooper still plays an OK straight man, while Helms just seems lost this time out.

Phillips makes the mistake of thinking we actually give a crap and have some sort of sentimental connection to these characters.

No doubt, I like these actors a lot, but the characters themselves? I didn’t need three films full of them doing the same thing over and over. Make another comedy, and cast these guys, but do something new with them. The Hangover was a unique premise that should’ve been one film and out.

So, what started as a good idea got unnecessarily revisited, and then got pummeled into the ground until it became unrecognizable and ugly. The Hangover Part III is Hollywood greed at its worst and has no redeeming value. Stay for the credits for a sequence where Phillips gets truly desperate and goes for last ditch laughs that can’t save his crap movie. Ω

Spike Lee tried to get a movie about American hero Jackie Robinson, starring Denzel Washington, off the ground for many years, but couldn’t make it happen. I get a feeling that Lee, who made one of the great biopics with Malcolm X, would’ve done something really special with the subject.

This effort from director Brian Helgeland (Payback) is OK, even really good at times, but gets awfully hokey in too many moments.

Chadwick Boseman is a great pick to play Robinson, as is Lucas Black as Pee Wee Reese. Harrison Ford delivers big time as Branch Rickey, the man who brought Robinson to the majors, and Christopher Meloni leaves the movie all too soon as Dodgers manager Leo Durocher, who was suspended the year Robinson made his debut. Boseman shines, even when the movie doesn’t, and it’s a lot of fun to see Ford do something this craggy and different. I’m thinking Robinson went through some major hell during his baseball times, and this movie only scratches the surface. It’s good, but it should’ve been great.

Fast & Furious 6

This franchise could’ve ended about five films ago, and I would’ve been fine with that. Vin Diesel mumbles his way through another fast car movie, this one with some admittedly fine driving stunts. The plot involves some nonsense about Vin and his crew (including Paul Walker) going after some other bad guy driver who’s threatening the world. He also has Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) working for him, even though she blew up in a prior movie. Dwayne Johnson is in there, too, as a badass lawman, and future installments will involve another one of my least favorite action stars if the post-credit footage is any indicator. I like to watch good pyrotechnics, but I hate it when just about everybody in these films opens their mouths.

It looks like these movies will never end, and Michelle Rodriguez will never die.

The Great Gatsby

It was a little worrisome when Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel had its release postponed last year. As it turns out, making the film a summer blockbuster rather than an awards season contender was a great move, because this one is right at home in the summer movie season. Shot in glorious 3-D, it works magic with the format. It’s a rollicking roaring ’20s movie that shouldn’t be missed.

Leonardo DiCaprio is a marvel in the title role, giving us a vulnerable and sometimes slightly crazy Gatsby in relentless pursuit of his love, Daisy (Carey Mulligan). Tobey Maguire is excellent as narrator and Gatsby admirer Nick Carraway, while Joel Edgerton steals scenes as Tom Buchanan. Those who like Luhrmann’s opulent, sometimes frantic style will find plenty to like in this movie.

He also manages to use music by Jay-Z and Lana Del Ray in a movie set nearly a century ago.

Iron Man 3

Shane Black, director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (starring Robert Downey Jr. in his best performance ever) and writer of such action classics as Lethal Weapon, gets his second directorial chore and delivers big time. Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) is now an insomniac suffering from panic attacks after the events of The Avengers, and he faces a new adversary in The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). Stark is a little bit shaky in this one, and that gives the film a dark, comic edge. Gwyneth Paltrow gets a little more screen time as Pepper Potts, while Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall show up as mysterious scientific types.

Downey Jr. is as fun as ever here, and Black knows just what to do with him. Black is also pretty snappy with the action scenes, which don’t disappoint. If this is the last of Downey Jr.’s solo Iron Man films, he’s going out on a good note.

Mud

It’s official: Jeff Nichols, who gave us the brilliant Take Shelter, is a writer/ director who stands among the best of them.

Matthew McConaughey plays the title character, a chipped-tooth, wild-haired drifter living in a boat in a tree along the Mississippi.

Two kids, Ellis and Neckbone (Tye Sheridan of

The Tree of Life, and Jacob Lofland) stumble upon him, and find themselves part of his strange and dangerous world. McConaughey is just catching wave after wave lately, and this is his best one yet. He makes Mud a little scary, yet charming and cunning. Sheridan and Lofland are terrific as the young friends who should probably stay away from guys living in boats in trees. The cast also boasts Reese Witherspoon, Michael Shannon and Sam Shepard—all of them equally great. Ladies and gentleman, we have the year’s first “excellent” movie. Jesus, it took long enough.

Star Trek Into Darkness

James Franco is in over his head for Sam Raimi’s mostly lame prequel to The Wizard of Oz. The title character calls for somebody with that old school Hollywood charm like Robert Downey, Jr., or Johnny Depp. Franco looks like a kid playing dress up here, and he’s not even the worst thing about the movie. That would be Mila Kunis looking completely lost as the witch who will become that witch we all know from the original Oz. I’m sorry—that witch isn’t supposed to be all corseted and hot. As for Rachel Weisz, she fares best as yet another witch, while Michelle Williams is just serviceable as Glinda the Good Witch. Raimi relies heavily on CGI effects—big surprise—and they look pretty crappy for the most part.

This is an underwhelming movie in much the same way his Spider-Man 3 missed the mark.

It’s overblown, misguided and odd.

Director Michael Bay delivers the rare decent film with this crazy concoction based on a true story. Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie play a trio of bodybuilders who decide to kidnap a rich guy (Tony Shalhoub) and force him to sign over all of his assets. The kidnapping plot nets them the dough, but greed and general stupidity result in the plan going south and people dying. Bay uses the story, based on the real-life shenanigans of Daniel Lugo (Wahlberg) to poke fun at the ’90s, give Wahlberg a chance to get laughs Wahlberg style, and provide Johnson with his best role yet. The movie contains all of that stuff that makes Bay such an annoying director (slo-mo, hyper-editing, etc.), but it works because the actors pull it off.

Derek Cianfrance follows up his brilliant Blue Valentine with a film bigger in scope but still starring Ryan Gosling, who plays Luke, a motorcycle stunt guy who finds out he has a kid and wants to be a part of his life. Problem is, the kid is the product of a one-night stand, and the mom (Eva Mendes) has moved on. Luke resorts to robbing banks, which culminates in a meeting with a rookie cop played by Bradley Cooper.

The film then focuses on Cooper’s character for a segment before dealing with Luke and Avery’s kids (played by Dane DeHaan and Emory Cohen) when they are teens. The movie is long, but never boring, and it crackles most when Gosling is on screen. It’s all about the sins of the fathers, and Cianfrance presents it in a way that resonates. Also stars Ray Liotta and Ben Mendelsohn.

J.J. Abrams continues the great thing he started with his 2009 reboot of this beloved franchise. This time out, he gives us some more familiar characters from Trek history, but thanks to that ingeniously created alternate timeline, the people aren’t quite the same. Benedict Cumberbatch is scary as a renegade Starfleet officer looking to kill as many commanders as possible while Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) chase him all over the universe. Peter Weller enters the fray as a power hungry admiral, with Alice Eve a welcome addition as his daughter and Enterprise stowaway. There are moments when Abrams goes a little overboard with his homage—I hate that tribble!—but it’s not enough to damage what turns out to be another worthy chapter to the franchise, and a solid summer movie.

Alter ego JB Envy primarily on songwriting, with no interest in vocalizing his thoughts.

But he soon found the path to rapping the lyrics himself furthered the message. The relationship between his hands-on military experience and his performing presence was found to be a strong crowd appeal.

“They love the fact that I’m a veteran, and there are songs directed to the military that they can relate to,” Abasto confirms of his fan base. “In mainstream music, they don’t have anyone like that— they can’t get the full connection.”

Abasto’s experience in the military provides a source of inspiration not only in political statements, for which he says the iron is hot to strike. “These aren’t the best of times for our country. So my songs are geared towards the change that we were promised.”

A single off his new album, for which he has a music video accessible on YouTube, “Going Down,” is based on the true-life story of a military friend’s son—who had a puppy love romance that ended in tragedy.

“My friend’s son had a crush on a girl in his class,” Abasto explains. “And so he wrote a ‘check yes or no’ note to her. She never responded—because she died in a car crash that night.”

The realistic video—even featuring a fire truck loaned by the Reno fire department, thanks to the director’s volunteer firefighting—spares the gory details, focusing mainly on the emotional sentiment of young love and the fragility of life instead.

“We tried to stay away from the violent aspects in the video—we kind of just paint the picture of the crash scene,” Abasto says. “It’s meant more to make people think, like most [of] my songs, which ultimately have a positive message.”

In fact, despite being cast in the political side of alternative hip-hop, which typically equates to angry rants, Abasto says he’s shy of the labeling, there’s only one song on Vimana he considers antagonistic. “‘Windows’ is the most aggressive song I’ve done in a long time,” Abasto concedes. “It’s me just getting everything out.”

So while he may speak with his mouth full of strong words— he’ll still politely thank you for listening. Ω

Some say there are two things that are impolite to talk about with strangers—religion and politics.

So perhaps that’s why local alternative hip-hop artist Jerry Abasto, stage name JB Envy, is so soft spoken. Upon first meeting, the mellow composition and carefully worded conversation of Abasto doesn’t scream performer—specifically the type to get up in front of crowds at the Knitting Factory and regal them with political statements

and revelations drawn from his personal life.

But it seems that when handed the microphone, Abasto’s alter ego of JB Envy takes over not just in name, but also in persona. He’s an open book, as he says onstage, about personal subjects from his girlfriend—who has two songs dedicated to her on his new album, Vimana, released on April 20—to his 5-year-old son. Abasto may be the epitome of table manners in the day-to-day—but once onstage, he holds nothing back—and every dish is served with a dash of true-life spice, and a side of politics.

“A lot of what’s on the new album is political,” Abasto says.

“It’s based around my life and my views.”

Taking the political route in artist style is a decision Abasto made organically. After graduating high school in 2002, he went straight into the military, working as an administrative specialist, stationed everywhere from South Korea to Washington, D.C. Returning to Reno five years ago—he initially intended to focus

Do you own a bodice or a codpiece? Do you often slip in an archaic word or phrase such as “anon,” pray tell” or “forsooth” in everyday conversation? Then, prithee, do make haste to the Valhalla Renaissance Faire at Lake Tahoe. The 21st annual event kicks off this Saturday, June 1, for two weekends of Elizabethan-era costumes, entertainment and revelry. The festival will have a Scottish invasion theme during the first weekend. There will be magic shows, contests, games and other activities geared toward a younger audience. Pirates and barbarians will take over the festival grounds the following weekend, June 8-9. Highlights include scavenger hunts, costume contests and a talk-like-a-pirate competition. Each weekend will feature music, dancing, theatrical performances and more than 100 merchants offering artwork, clothing, historical weapons, jewelry and leather goods. The gates are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 1-2, 8-9, at Camp Richardson Resort, 1900 Jameson Beach Road, South Lake Tahoe. disease does not exist in a vacuum For the last twelve years, i’ve been treating hepatitis c. it’s a virus, like hiV. the difference is that hepatitis c is curable, so it’s a very exciting disease to treat. in the next year or two, some amazing new drugs are going to get cure rates as high as 90%. the large majority of hep c patients don’t know they have it. it’s a very common disease that can remain silent for decades. Time is on her slide My girlfriend is constantly late, which is annoying, but what’s more annoying is that there’s always an excuse: She had to do one more thing at work; traffic was horrible; her dog wouldn’t pee, so she had to walk him longer; she couldn’t get somebody off the phone. She always apologizes and is always late the next time. I don’t take her lateness as a sign she doesn’t care enough about me, but it doesn’t exactly feel great, either.

It’s hard for the punctual to understand how anyone can treat time like it’s stretchy. It’s not as if an hour will ever go by more slowly because Time went out drinking with its friends Mass and Distance and woke up with a nasty hangover. But the chronically late aren’t necessarily the disrespectful, power-tripping jerks who those always sitting waiting for them in restaurants sometimes suspect them to be. Julie Morgenstern writes in Time Management from the Inside Out that if someone’s late by varying amounts of time—20 minutes here, 12 there— their lateness is probably “technical,” involving errors like underestimating how long things take, rather than psychological (as in, “I’ll show you who’s queen!”).

Morgenstern advises the chronically tardy to avoid the temptation to cram in “just one more thing” by viewing time as we do space—seeing an hour as a finite container, which can only fit so many activities. Over a week, she suggests jotting down how long tasks actually take, including hidden time costs, such as travel time, cleanup time, interruption time and dog bladder cooperativeness.

And because life tends to have more snags than a bad girl’s tights, she advises building in “cushion time”— an extra 20 percent on top of the time you think a task will take.

Chronic lack of consideration, even when it isn’t intentional, chips away at a relationship. (The way to your heart is not through your girlfriend’s last-minute to-do list.) Explain that you understand that her chronic lateness isn’t an attack on you, but if there is “one more thing” she could squeeze in, perhaps it could be the thought of how you feel sitting all alone in a restaurant, keeping busy by searching for coded messages woven into the tablecloth.

Give her Morgenstern’s book, and tell her it would mean a lot to you if, for the next three weeks, she’d make a serious effort to show up when she says she will. (Of course, three weeks is just a start, but that sounds less daunting than “Change your deeply ingrained habit right now!”) Praise any efforts and improvements you see, and don’t expect perfection. Just hope for a day when “the most unbelievable thing …!” is her on-time arrival—as opposed to another eight-car pileup on her suburban culde-sac, making her even later than she already was, thanks to her dog’s insisting on watching the rest of Days Of Our Lives. Ω

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Back in the

1920s, the governor of Texas was determined to forbid the teaching of foreign languages in public schools. To bolster her case, she called on the Bible. “If English was good enough for Jesus Christ,” she said, “it’s good enough for us.” She was dead serious. I suspect you may soon have to deal with that kind of garbled thinking, Aries. And it may be impossible to simply ignore it, since the people wielding it may have some influence on your life. So what’s the best way to deal with it? Here’s what I advise: Be amused.

Quell your rage. Stay calm. And methodically gather the cool, clear evidence about what is really true.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): A few weeks

ago, the principal at a school in Bellingham, Washington, announced that classes would be canceled the next day. What was his rationale? A big storm, a bomb threat or an outbreak of sickness? None of the above.

He decided to give students and teachers the day off so they could enjoy the beautiful weather that had arrived. I encourage you to make a similar move in the coming days, Taurus. Take an extended joy break— maybe several of them. Grant yourself permission to sneak away and indulge in spontaneous celebrations. Be creative as you capitalize profoundly on the gifts that life is offering you.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In Japan it’s

not rude to slurp while you eat your ramen noodles out of a bowl. That’s what the Lonely Planet travel guide told me. In fact, some Japanese hosts expect you to make sounds with your mouth. They take it as a sign that you’re enjoying your meal. In that spirit, Gemini, and in accordance with the astrological omens, I encourage you to be as uninhibited as you dare this week—not just when you’re slurping your noodles, but in every situation where you’ve got to express yourself uninhibitedly in order to experience the full potential of the pleasurable opportunities. As one noodle slurper testified: “How can you possibly get the full flavor if you don’t slurp?”

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Here’s a

thought from philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein: “A person will be imprisoned in a room with a door that’s unlocked and opens inwards; as long as it does not occur to him to pull rather than push.” I’d like to suggest that his description fits you right now, Cancerian. What are you going to do about it? Tell me I’m wrong? Reflexively agree with me? I’ve got a better idea. Without either accepting or rejecting my proposal, simply adopt a neutral, open-minded attitude and experiment with the possibility. See what happens if you try to pull the door open.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): If you have been

waiting for the right moment to perfect your party skills, I suspect this might be it.

Is there anything you can do to lower your inhibitions? Would you at least temporarily consider slipping into a chronic state of fun?

Are you prepared to commit yourself to extra amounts of exuberant dancing, ebullient storytelling and unpredictable playtime?

According to my reading of the astrological omens, the cosmos is nudging you in the direction of rabble-rousing revelry.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Where exactly

are your power spots, Virgo? Your bed, perhaps, where you rejuvenate and reinvent yourself every night? A place in nature where you feel at peace and at home in the world? A certain building where you consistently make good decisions and initiate effective action? Wherever your power spots are, I advise you to give them extra focus. They are on the verge of serving you even better than they usually do, and you should take steps to ensure that happens.

I also advise you to be on the lookout for a new power spot. It’s available.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Reverence

is one of the most useful emotions. When you respectfully acknowledge the sublime beauty of something greater than yourself, you do yourself a big favor. You generate authentic humility and sincere gratitude, which are healthy for your body as well as your soul. Please note that reverence is not solely the province of religious people. A biologist may venerate the scientific method.

An atheist might experience a devout sense of awe toward geniuses who have bequeathed to us their brilliant ideas. What about you, Libra? What excites your reverence? Now is an excellent time to explore the deeper mysteries of this altered state of consciousness.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): When

explorer Ernest Shackleton was planning his expedition to Antarctica in 1914, he placed this ad in London newspapers: “Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, return doubtful, honor and recognition in case of success.” Would you respond to a come-on like that if you saw it today? I hope not. It’s true that your sense of adventure is ratcheting up. And I suspect you’re itching for intense engagement with the good kind of darkness that in the past has inspired so much smoldering wisdom.

But I believe you can satisfy those yearnings without putting yourself at risk or suffering severe deprivation.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

“I’d rather not sing than sing quiet,” said the vivacious chanteuse Janis Joplin. Her attitude reminds me a little of Salvador Dalí’s. He said, “Painting’s never difficult.

It’s either easy or impossible.” I suspect you Sagittarians may soon be in either-or states like those. You will want to give everything you’ve got, or else nothing at all. You will either be in the zone, flowing along in a smooth and natural groove, or else totally stuck.

Luckily, I suspect that giving it all and being in the zone will predominate.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In

1948, Nelson Mandela began his fight to end the system of apartheid in his native South Africa. Eventually, he was arrested for dissident activities and sentenced to life imprisonment. He remained in jail until 1990, when his government bowed to international pressure and freed him. By 1994, apartheid collapsed. Mandela was elected president of his country and won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Fast-forward to 2008. Mandela was still considered a terrorist by the United States and had to get special permission to enter the country. Yikes! You probably don’t have an antiquated rule or obsolescent habit that’s as horrendous as that, Capricorn. But it’s past time for you to dissolve your attachment to any outdated attachments, even if they’re only mildly repressive and harmful.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): As a

renowned artist, photographer and fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld has overflowed with creative expression for 50 years. His imagination is weird and fantastic, yet highly practical. He has produced a profusion of flamboyant stuff. “I’m very down to earth,” he has said, “I’m just not from this earth.”

Let’s make that your mantra for the coming weeks, Aquarius: You, too, will be very down to earth in your own unique way. You’ll follow your quirky intuition, but always with the intent of channeling it constructively.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In the fol-

lowing passage, French novelist Georges Perec invites us to renew the way we look upon things that are familiar to us. “What we need to question,” he says, “is bricks, concrete, glass, our table manners, our utensils, our tools, the way we spend our time, our rhythms. To question that which seems to have ceased forever to astonish us.” A meditation like this could nourish and even thrill you, Pisces. I suggest you boost your ability to be sincerely amazed by the small wonders and obvious marvels that you sometimes take for granted.

well aware of Asilomar? Well, Asilomar was originally put up for the YWCA. We began that in 1913. About 16 buildings in 15 years at Asilomar. It was built under the auspices, not financial endowment, of Phoebe Apperson Hearst, Mr. Hearst’s mother. She was instrumental in acquiring the land—having the land donated to the YWCA. It was built, and I was honored to be a part of it, to be the summer conference center for the YWCA leaders. I have a number of YWCA projects in the Western United States. One in Honolulu.

One in San Diego. And three, I believe it is, in San Francisco. Many women’s organization buildings. The Berkeley Women’s City Club, for example. … I have, right now, in 1937, over 500 buildings.

‘Julia Morgan’ Annette Baldwin is a Chicago-based Chautauquan who performs as historical figures like Coco Chanel and Susan B. Anthony. I don’t usually do interviews. Did you know that, Mr.—what was your last name? I usually don’t use first names. I’ve known Mr. Hearst now for 20 years, and it’s always Ms. Morgan and Mr. Hearst. I hope you don’t think I’m being presumptions or rude, young man, but could you please give me your last name.

Would you spell that please? I like being exact. I think it’s important. If you’re going to put a building up, then you must be absolutely confident that you have done all of your homework, made every effort to make sure that building will stand for as long as necessary. So you will spell your last name for me, won’t you?

Architecture was kind of an unusual profession for a woman, correct?

Well, thank you for the honor.

As for not knowing who I am, I don’t expect you to. My buildings will speak for themselves.

Oh, well, I never saw it that way. I never ever thought that way. I never thought that brains or talent had a gender. … Everyone thought it was peculiar. I never thought that. If a job is to be done, you simply do it. I always took up the challenge. I adore challenges. It’s what keeps a person alive and thriving, a real purpose for living. And I do hope that people will pay attention to the buildings that they pass by. Pay attention to them. How do they make you feel when you pass by or more importantly when you go into them? What do you feel? Does it serve its purpose? That’s the question that’s most important to me.

The building must be there for its purpose.

You must build from the inside out. In other words, what are the activities that are contained within the walls? You plan that, and then you build the structure according to the activity going on in that building. Ω

You worked on the Hearst Castle, is that correct?

Absolutely. I’ve been working—well, what year is this? It’s 1937, well, we’ve been working on that 20 years now, Mr. Hearst and I, our collaboration, San Simeon. We never refer to it as the castle. That’s a misunderstanding among the general public.

It is San Simeon or La Cuesta Encantada. ...

Flights of fancy For most of us, the wind is kind of a pain in the ass. That’s just the way it usually is. Yes, it can add pleasant sound effects to existence, it can add pleasant air movement to a scorcher of a day, but it can also just as often be ... a pain in the ass.

There is one species, though, that I’m sure truly celebrates the wind. They celebrate it because they get off on it. Literally. The wind appears to be essential to their concept of happiness. The stronger the wind, the better. They party in the wind, goof off in the wind and just flat out have a ball in the wind.

When it’s windy, the word goes out, and these guys get together and commence to some serious clownin’. The wind makes these jokers happy the way a bottle of vanilla-flavored Grey Goose puts the sparkle in Lindsay Lohan’s step.

You know who I’m talking about?

∫y Bruce Van Dye more. I’ve seen enough of these pelicanic pow wows to know that they’re not (1) hunting, (2) scouting or (3) courting. None of that survivalist biological jive.

What they’re doin’ is (4) hangin’.

Just being sociable, enjoying the fact that they’re huge, winged birds with bellies full of fish and why not get together with some of the gang and catch a thermal and float up to about 1,000 feet and dig the situation and see what it all looks like from up there? Let’s face it, this has got to be an absolutely dandy way to blow a nice morning. And pardon my rampaging anthropomorphism!

I’ve got those gulls out at Pyramid figured out, too. I now know what gives them profound and utter happiness. It’s called a six-pack of little chocolate doughnuts, stolen from the bed of my truck. Ω

completely dominated by the wind, but small enough to whizz around like electrons in the ether, I’ve seen them often enough now to know that when they take to the afternoon winds, they’re doing pretty much the same thing a bunch of surfers in Hawaii do when the word hits that the surf is up. Ravens ride air the way surfers ride ocean, and for each, when their chosen medium is happening, they both react in a similar way. (1) Drop everything, (2) begin riding the heck out of the chosen medium and (3) get all goofy in the head because riding the chosen medium is the greatest thing ever and the key to a fine life on this planet.

You know who else has a great time? Pelicans. I’ve been spying on these gnatty bumpos, too, and I think I’ve got their little good-time shindigs sussed out. Frequently, you’ll see great columns of these white giants, floating high in the sky above the lake, making lazy circles in groups of 30, 40, 50 or
