Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I’ve complained about this before: Email, which in the ’90s was the most efficient method of communication ever, has become the least efficient form of communication. I am not exaggerating when I say I receive hundreds of emails every day and not 10 out of 100 are actually intended as communications to me.

That means 90 out of 100 are communications where it’s efficient for the individual sending the information, but I’m supposed to waste my time winnowing all those emails to get to the 10 percent that are actually relevant to me and my affairs. Here’s a visual in which 10 percent of the information is useful: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, I consectetur adipiscing elit. Sed nec libero hate ligula. Ut a velit sed libero cursus laoreet. Duis viverra purus id tellus rutrum viverra. Maecenas vel nisl tellus, cursus all ultricies erat. Proin at nibh facilisis spam nulla volutpat emails bibendum eget a diam.

Last week, I started a zero tolerance policy for irrelevant emails. Our company has a filter that weeds out most of the Viagra ads and such, but lately I’ve been using two additional filters to block irrelevant messages before I receive them.

It works like this. I open Chrome, and then I open three tabs. One has my inbox, the other two have these two spam filters.

I go through every single email. If it is even potentially relevant to me, like from a Nevada government agency, I let it though. If it’s an advertisement for an event in an area code that isn’t 775, I put the domain name @wespam. com into one spam blocker, but if I can identify a word or phrase that is always spam, it goes into another. (For example “Brand new Govt program.”) One filters out “legitimate” spammers, like New York PR agencies, and the other filters out “illegitimate” spammers who constantly change email and domain names to evade guys like me who are tired of noise.

I’m not there yet, but it’s already more manageable. And I feel better every time I push the button that says, “Add Sender.”

While we welcome informed critique of the work we present—that comment reveals an unfortunate misunderstanding of our mission. We offer theatre training to students—many aged 18-25.

Providing students with an opportunity to stretch their abilities in multiple directions is why we exist.

A wing and a prayer Re “Friendly skies” (Foodfinds, March 21): After reading the review of the Spitfire Pub and Grill, my wife and I were anxious to check it out. We were not disappointed.

As soon as we walked through the door we were greeted by a pleasant voice from behind the bar. Stevie, our server, was on the scene with menus and a friendly smile within seconds. I ordered the shepherd’s pie and my wife had the fish and chips. Both were perfectly prepared, well seasoned and served piping hot. Re “Be Americans” (Editorial, April 19): I suppose that an editorial is often stream of consciousness—an inside look at the working thoughts of the editor. I appreciate that. But I’m still concerned with the mixed message of your recent editorial titled: “Be Americans” given the subject and its current nature. I had hoped from the title that your article would press for courage and calm but your first paragraph reinforces the fear that is used to push through the very draconian laws you warn against at the end of your article. “We are under siege from within and without” is both a massive exaggeration of our current state of national security and exactly the kind of reaction that terrorists hope to accomplish.

We were attacked—yes. We are not under anything even close to a siege. You rightly chastise other news agencies for jumping too quickly with “rumors” and “inaccurate reports.” I’m often left with the uncomfortable impression that news channels are less thorough and less accurate than the front page of Reddit. But rather than caution against trying to produce news too quickly, you want the FBI and the police to announce play by play of what they’re doing. Did you want a name of a suspect in the home search or a confirmation that

this was a suspect? I ask because you mention the Atlanta Olympic bombing so it would appear you’re familiar with the damage done to Richard Jewell by the kinds of early announcements you’re clamoring for. I think I understand the statement that you’re making.

If saying that America isn’t safe but we should remain strong and brave then I’d agree with you. But your media consumption pushes for the kinds of knee-jerk hunger for information that makes you neither safer nor better informed. In fact, the desire to hear the president use the word terrorism; the need for up-to-the-minute confirmations of Boston police actions; and definitive announcements of current intelligence from the FBI isn’t only unlikely, it’s probably poor judgment.

I believe the president was trying to avoid panicking the rest of the country and that doesn’t seem unreasonable. He didn’t sit there and not react. He didn’t pretend there wasn’t an explosion. When Americans hear “terrorist attack,” they can sometimes jump to the conclusion that we’re really “under siege.” Those panicky leaps in logic come from somewhere. Panic, not a more informed 24-hour cable news, is what leads to the erosion of liberties and privacy.

A disgusting bill We second what our esteemed columnist Sheila Leslie wrote this week in Left Foot Forward. A bill, Nevada Senate Bill 192, also called the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, is a heinous attack on women and women’s right to be free from constraints put on them by superstitious religious thinking from the Iron Age. Ostensibly, it is supposed to give doctors and pharmacists the right to refuse to dispense medical care if they claim to have religious objections to it. What it really does is allow strangers to stand in judgment of how other people live their lives and to prevent emergency health care for women.

The bill’s summary is frankly hilarious in its misdirecting hypocrisy: “Enacts the Nevada Preservation of Religious Freedom Act to prohibit governmental entities from substantially burdening the exercise of religion.”

Nevada somehow managed to fly under the radar in last election’s war on women, the election where such terms as “legitimate rape,” “transvaginal ultrasounds” and “personhood,” became political wedge issues.

Fortunately, women make up 53 percent of the electorate, and the misogynists got their hats handed to them.

So here we are in 2013, and the liars and rhetorical magicians have come up with a new way to camouflage their attacks. They say they’re trying to support religious rights, not diminish them.

As Leslie points out, even if the bill was written and voted out of the Senate with the smokescreen of a somewhat reasonable rationale, it’s a disgusting attack on women’s rights to health care and people’s rights to determine their own religious choices.

In the United States, we have this thing called the Constitution. In it, we allow changes to be made— amendments. Here at the Reno News & Review, one of our favorite amendments is the First: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

It is unquestionable that the proposed Nevada law holds one religious view as superior to another, and it codifies bigotry against women and the gay community.

It’s also based on a law that the Supreme Court has already found unconstitutional, the federal Religion Freedom Restoration Act, which was overturned in 1997.

While Sheila Leslie and others have focused on the medical aspects of this law, it in no way limits its use to doctors, nurses and pharmacists, as a quick read will show (http://tinyurl.com/cu3vsy6)—“The provisions ... of this act apply to any claim or defense regarding the employment, education or volunteer service of a person who performs or will be tasked with performing any religious duties for a religious organization, including, without limitation: (a) Spreading or teaching faith; (b) Performing devotional services; or (c) Participating in internal governance.”

We defy readers to find a spot in this bill that maintains the separation of church and state in places like schools or that would prevent teachers from preaching to our children any religion to which they subscribe. This bill must be stopped. Please, write your representative. Ω

War on women: The Nevada front This is the tale of a terrible bill and a shocking number of legislators willing to cast the reproductive rights of women aside in a ‘horse-trade’ of discrimination and potentially great harm.

Let’s begin with Feb. 26, the day the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, SB 192, was introduced by ultraby conservative Sen. Barbara Cegavske.

Sheila Leslie To long-time legislative observers, the bill was classic Cegavske, a boilerplate screed, using freedom of religion to cover up its real objective, to give pharmacists and doctors the right to deny prescriptions or medical services for reproductive care they morally disagree with, such as birth control, the morning-after pill or a legal abortion.

The bill’s puzzling summary should have been warning enough: “Enacts the Nevada Preservation of Religious Freedom Act to prohibit governmental entities from substantially burdening the exercise of religion.” It’s hard to think of how the government “substantially burdens” religious practices in a country founded on freedom of religion (see Section 4 of Article 1 of the Nevada

Constitution and the First Amendment to the United States Constitution).

But what stunned many were the eight Democratic senators (Denis, Ford, Jones, Kihuen, Parks, Segerblom, Smith and Woodhouse) who signed on as cosponsors, joining eight Republican senators.

When questioned by advocates, the Democrats said the bill was harmless, and they were being encouraged to sign Republican bills to foster the “new spirit of bi-partisanship” in the 2013 session. Others said once they saw the names of progressive senators like Tick Segerblom, they assumed the bill was fine. Some defended their sponsorship, saying the bill was necessary to make sure religious rights were protected, while others insisted no one should worry because surely the bill would be killed “on the other side [in the Assembly].”

Progressives shrugged, assuming SB 192 would meet the usual fate of Sen. Cegavske’s bills in a Legislature controlled by Democrats and die a quiet death. Yet by the first house passage deadline, somehow the

religious freedom bill had become a bargaining chip for the “higher policy goal” of marriage equality, leaving many wondering how taking away rights from one group of citizens to give rights to another group of citizens could ever be envisioned as a fair “trade.”

The issue comes down to two polarizing viewpoints: those who believe a pharmacist with moral qualms about filling certain prescriptions should be able to deny women he doesn’t deem worthy and those who feel a pharmacist must fill a legal prescription, regardless of personal religious views.

The American Medical Association has denounced “right to deny” medical care bills because “refusals endanger patients’ lives and health and can have irreversible consequences.” Indeed, many cases have been documented around the country of women in emergency situations who have been near death from a miscarriage or other condition and encountered a doctor or hospital refusing to provide a lifesaving abortion. SB 192 would give

these medical professionals extra legal protections in case a woman died in that circumstance.

On April 22, the bill cleared the Senate on a 14-7 vote, with just a handful of Democrats voting against the right-wing attack on reproductive rights, including four who originally signed on as cosponsors. Later that evening, the marriage equality amendment also passed the Senate, 12-9, trade completed, moving Nevada forward towards equality on one front while taking a giant step backward in terms of protecting women’s rights.

Progressives should ask Sens. Brower, Cegavske, Denis, Goicoechea, Gustavson, Hammond, Hardy, Hutchison, Jones, Kieckhefer, Kihuen, Roberson, Segerblom, and Settlemeyer—all men except for Cegavske—why they voted to allow a medical provider’s religious beliefs to interfere with reproductive health care rights.

And Nevada women: Don’t take your rights for granted. When there’s a “higher policy goal,” they can be quickly traded away. Ω

Live free or live under observation There’s a certain déja vu that comes as a result of tragedies like the Boston bombing. Whenever an act of terrorism occurs, there is a tremendous sense of community that rises from the ashes of despair. People express their solidarity in a multitude of creative ways; charity events, signs, by Chanelle Bessette Facebook statuses and letter writing campaigns are just a few of the vehicles of comfort and support.

Emotional reactions are natural, and when an incident of national attention occurs, such as Newtown, 9/11 or Aurora, devastation and grief are a part of the process of recovery.

However, reactions to tragedy can also be extremely visceral and lead to knee-jerk public policy reforms. After the shooting that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary, gun control legislation became a primary concern of the public, despite how little it would have helped to avoid a similar situation and would probably have led to severe Second Amendment infringements. In the post-9/11 period of fear and panic, the PATRIOT Act was

put in place to deprive the American people of their right to privacy under the guise of greater protection from terrorism. Time and time again, tragedy has been used as a justification for depriving people of their freedoms and to create a Doppler effect of fear.

When Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York reacted to the Boston bombings by proposing increased security measures, he put it under the umbrella of a need to reinterpret the Constitution. Essentially, the protections of the Fourth Amendment for average citizens are up for re-evaluation as a result of the misdeeds of a few evil people. This could mean more surveillance, more searches, more of whatever the government deems will keep us safer.

Unrelated to the Boston bombing yet still on a similar note, a measure of freedom deprivation is currently going through the Senate that will definitely affect U.S. citizens all the way from Boston, to New York, to here in Reno: the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, more

casually known as CISPA. The proposed law would allow the U.S. government to monitor and collect information from internet users for the purpose of “cybersecurity” with or without the users’ permission.

Some big players in the world of the internet, including—but not limited to—Facebook, Apple and Microsoft have given their support to CISPA as protection against cyber threats and “bad actors” such as malicious hackers.

What CISPA will ultimately come down to, however, is a group of corporations aiding the government in collecting intelligence on the public without our permission and without a warrant. The internet is open-source collaboration and education, and it’s perhaps the greatest frontier of freedom of speech that the human race has yet created. CISPA is tantamount to an Orwellian Big Brother or perhaps a Foucauldian panopticon, where unlimited surveillance trains people to police themselves. It’s an act that, like many instruments of

supposed protection, breeds anxiety and fear.

Benjamin Franklin famously once said, “They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” If the proposed restrictions are taken lying down, then Mr. Franklin’s prophetic words will ring true.

We live in troubled times, when boarding a plane, running a marathon or going to school or a movie theater have all been shown to be risky behaviors, and, in fact, it seems that even staying at home browsing online at a computer is becoming a more dangerous activity. But the key is vigilance. By remaining aware of the encroachments on freedom that creep closer every day, it is possible to fight tooth and nail against them.

The Constitution may have been written in a time before airplanes, before the internet and before security cameras, but the rights that it guarantees with the First and Fourth Amendments are inviolable. Ω

The museum, housed in the School of Mines, is one of the littleknown tourism features of Reno. Earlier this month a sample of stibnite was discovered missing from the collection. A statement from Secret Witness describes the mineral as “known for its sharpness and stunning metallic luster of the crystals.” The particular sample that is missing has an estimated value of $30,000.

There is concern that it has been split in two pieces.

Dems make hay Gov. Brian Sandoval’s slow responses to the dispute over Nevada busing hundreds of mental patients out of state has been countered by the Nevada Democratic Party’s rapid responses to each development, which have often been in very harsh terms.

The party has tracked the story closely and its spokesperson Zack Hudson has sent out dozens of news releases since the story broke. Each time there is a new development, a Hudson release follows quickly with subject lines like “BREAKING: Sandoval Administration Admits to Lying About Last Week’s New Patient Dumping Case.”

The Democratic releases have made sure that some news gets from one end of the state to another quickly, as when Las Vegas’ KTNV reported that a patient was sent out of state on April 24, after the original story was reported by the Sacramento Bee and after the Sandoval administration had said new safeguards were in place.

SANDOVAL On another occasion, KVVU in Las Vegas reported that one patient said she was removed from the state twice. Hudson quickly sent the news statewide.

Following our example Preston Truman, longtime advocate for nuclear “downwinders,” is reporting that the U.S. government is not the only government that has dragged its heels on providing compensation for cancer and leukemia victims of nuclear testing.

“The British government has ruled out paying … compensation to Australian soldiers deliberately exposed to nuclear bomb testing at Maralinga in South Australia 61 years ago,” Truman said.

“Of the British and Australian veterans who were involved in the testing, and the Aboriginal people in the area at the time of the blasts, only 29 Aboriginal people have ever received compensation from the Australian government and veterans continue to struggle to obtain the medical support they need.”

Compensation to victims of Nevada testing has been oftpromised but has come exceedingly slow.

Power folks to meet An annual meeting of the Geothermal Energy Association will be held at the Grand Sierra Resort June 26-27. The event will feature industry execs, public officials, and others interested in renewables. Nevada politicians like to say that Nevada is the Saudi Arabia of geothermal.

Among those attending the event will be former Nevada state consumer advocate Jon Wellinghoff, now chair of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Trying to warm a cold case 1983 missing child case led to changes The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is trying to revive interest by in an old Nevada case as its 30th Dennis Myers anniversary approaches.

Ten-year-old Tony Franko disappeared on May 8, 1983.

“It’s our oldest unsolved missing child case,” said KOLO News reporter Ed Pearce, a longtime leader in the Secret Witness crime tip line program. “It’s an instructive case in this regard: If you see what we do now in the case of a missing child as opposed to what we did then, we move in a much more responsive direction.”

“I have my doubts, and I have my hopes.”

Lisa Ackerman-Steward Tony Franko’s mother Pearce said that before the Franko disappearance, if was common for law enforcement to wait 24 hours before mounting a major effort. In the Franko case, that procedure was followed in part because there was a previous instance of the child running away.

“Tony left for school one morning,” Pearce said. “He never arrived at school. For a long time this was part of the narrative, and it affected

how they responded—he had run away before. It was just for a couple of hours. He made himself a couple of sandwiches and left, then he came back home after a couple of hours.

But [with that history,] they didn’t do anything right away.”

Because of that previous incident, local law enforcement had a mistaken view of the boy as troubled. Actually, Pearce said, the household was relatively stable and happy.

“He and his mother had a pretty good relationship, he was active in 4-H, he was excited about a show where he won a ribbon for showing his pony. They didn’t do the kind of things we do today, and the trail went cold. He was never found. … And the case led to changes in the way missing children cases were handled in the Truckee Meadows.”

Hanging on to hope Tony Franko was old enough to get himself to school. On that date, his mother left for work and then he headed to Lemmon Valley Elementary School. He never reached it.

He had a slight gap between his front teeth, small birthmarks above his left eyebrow and on the right side of his neck, two light moles across his cheek and nose, and a light scar under

his lower lip. When he disappeared, he was wearing a red 49ers T-shirt, blue jeans, and a blue hooded jacket. His full name: Anthony Bernard Franko.

His mother, Lisa AckermanStewart, eventually left Lemmon Valley, lived in Verdi for a time, then settled in Fallon.

“It’s hard at times because, you know, you see other things in the newspaper about people being found not alive, but I still have a feeling he might be alive,” she said this week.

“Where, I don’t know. You see cases where people might have been right around the corner.”

The remarkable and highly publicized survival cases of Elizabeth Smart and Jaycee Dugard have led to greater hope and effort in the cases of missing children, but also may have increased the pain of dashed hopes, because those survivals remain exceptions to the norm.

“I was happy for them being found,” Ackerman-Stewart said. “It gave me more hope that Tony might be found one of these days after so many years. I was really happy for them. I hope and pray sometimes that that would happen. I still have hope. … If he is out there, oh, maybe I’m a grandmother or something. I think I would recognize him if I were to see him. I could identify him. I’d probably still treat him as if he were 10. I still think of him [as] little.”

Tragic litany Faster response did not, of course, always change outcomes. There was a major and rapid response in the disappearance of 8-years-olds Charles and Jennifer Chia from the Timber Hills apartment complex on Oct. 18, 1989.

Their remains were found the following July. The killer or killers have not been found.

While procedures changed in the Truckee Meadows, other nearby jurisdictions had different practices.

In the case of Jaycee Dugard, Pearce said, “They spent several days up there wondering, ‘Well, it could have been her stepdad.’”

Such cases litter local history— Monica Da Silva, Lisa Bonham, Jennifer Martin. Martin, who lived a few blocks from Tony Franko, disappeared on June 28, 1987. She was 11.

Bonham, age 6, was kidnapped on Sept. 3, 1977, then raped and strangled. Her body was found in Dog Valley. The case was solved by technology—DNA testing 23 years after her death identified her killer.

“I do believe that there are people out there who know what happened to Tony,” Dreher said. He hopes they will still come forward. In the Chia case, he said, a woman whose husband had information about the case told her to stay silent. She finally contacted police after her husband died. Dreher said the people who worked the Franko case most diligently were Mike Haley and Tim Yardic of the Washoe Sheriff’s Department. Yardic is retired.

“They did an awesome job on that case,” Dreher said.

Asked how he feels about the case after three decades, Haley—now sheriff—said, “Unsatisfied. During the Franko case, we had other cases leading up to that that were a tragic loss of young children. … Every new detective that comes into the sheriff’s office picks that case up. It’s unfinished business and it’s tragic.”

Ackerman-Stewart posts birthday greetings to Tony online every year.

She said this week, “I have my doubts, and I have my hopes.” Ω

The sleeping 7-year-old Monica Da Silva was taken from her bedroom in an Idlewild Drive home in the middle of the night on Sept. 24, 1990. Her remains were later found in a canyon west of Lagomarsino Canyon east of Sparks, but were not identified as Da Silva until a year later. Indeed, there was a period when it was thought the remains might be those of Dugard, sending a chill of fear through her family members.

At one point, parallels in a Las Vegas case to the Da Silva case raised 1985 OHIO AD hopes the crime would be solved.

Two years ago, Da Silva’s mother Julie Crain—now a Wisconsin resident—told a reporter in Appleton, “We still want answers.”

Pearce said that some police officers who “took to the case, took it to heart,” continue working some of these cases even after they retire.

Former Reno police officer Ron Dreher said most of these cases still occupy him.

Back in 1990, the co-founders of ComputerCorps changed an elderly widower’s life by giving him a computer and, with that, a renewed purpose to keep on living. Seven years later, ComputerCorps began in Ron Norton’s basement. by Sage Leehey This organization now thrives in a 40,000-square-feet warehouse facility.

“We started over 15 years ago with two volunteers, and since then, we’ve s age l@ had over 6,000 volunteers contribute more than a half million hours to this news review.c om project,” Norton said. “We started in the basement of an old ranch house, and we’ve graduated up.”

ComputerCorps, located in Carson City, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission to provide “access to computer technology and skills training for under-served families, while eliminating electronic waste (eWaste) in our nation’s landfills.” The organization urges businesses, schools and others to donate their old electronics to assist this mission.

“We take in used electronics, all electronics to recycle,” Norton said. “Out of that, we get about 1,000 to 2,000 computers a month. Our main goal on the technology is to reuse.”

If they cannot use the electronics they receive, they then recycle the electronic waste properly.

One program is “Every Home A Classroom” or EHAC. School counselors refer children of under-privileged families with no computer at home, and the parents volunteer 40 hours in some capacity at their child’s school in order to receive a computer from ComputerCorps. They have done programs throughout the state and even 15 outside the country.

They have a summer program called TechCamp. There will be four camps lasting two weeks each this summer where children aged 10 to 15 are taught how to tear down, test and build their own computer. At the end of the program, the children take their computer home.

The organization also has a small outlet store and technology services To learn more about ComputerCorps, visit department. People from the community can buy refurbished computers for www.computercorps. as little as $50 and get their computer fixed inexpensively. If they cannot org. afford a computer, they can also volunteer 48 hours to take one home.

Norton and Shari White, community relations coordinator, said that many of their volunteers are from disadvantaged backgrounds. They work with rehabilitation programs, court referrals for community service, AARP, Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, the welfare department, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and other programs to help give people, through volunteering, a purpose in life and a new skill set.

They also have volunteers with physical, mental and social disabilities.

They work with several autistic volunteers to help them develop better social skills, and they have one elderly volunteer named Charlie with a neurological disorder that makes him shake. According to Norton, this man has been with the organization for 13 years and has volunteered more than 15,000 hours.

“Charlie … has been able to come here and volunteer and tear down these computers though his wife has to come in here and feed him because he shakes so badly,” White said. “He’s able to sit and tear computers down.

It gives him such purpose. It’s a beautiful thing to watch.”

ComputerCorps also feeds lunch to their volunteers daily and gives food boxes to volunteers weekly if they need it. The organization partners with the Northern Nevada Food Bank and gives out food to the community at least once a month. Ω OPINION

for increased sales. Common GMOs include corn, soy, sugar beets, and canola and cottonseed oils. These crops are also fed to cattle, sheep and other animals that we, as a society, eat regularly. We ingest GMOs almost every time we eat.

Trying to eliminate GMOs from a diet is extremely difficult, sometimes near impossible, because of their presence in most mass-produced foods. The Great Basin Community Food Co-op is a local community-owned grocery store that has committed to a one-year evaluation of all their products to determine what contains GMOs and what does

not. After the evaluation, they will prohibit GMO-containing products from their shelves.

A group called the Grassroots Action Network is heading up the Label GMO Nevada project will assist in this effort.

or soybeans produced by the Monsanto Company. These crops’ DNA is modified to resist the herbicide glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup), which allows farmers to spray it on their crops without harming the crops.

There are some benefits to these crops, according to Shintani, but they are still the source of a lot of controversy.

“In the past, they had to do a lot more cultivation of the land, which causes soil erosion,” Shintani said. “That causes the farm land to be depleted. Now, they do what’s called “no till.”

he debate over genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is emotionally charged and has been especially hot recently, with the labeling bill introduced

by U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer and U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio last Wednesday.

A GMO is an organism in which part of its genetic make up has been altered through genetic engineering. In agriculture, these organisms are made to have certain desirable traits, like resistance to cold weather or pests or a more pleasing appearance

That control doesn’t stop at the patents. A lot of distrust that many have for GMOs in food begins with Monsanto. There has been a documented flow of people between government regulatory agencies and Monsanto.

Who’s buying?

Although patents had been held on plants before this time, in 2001 the U.S. Supreme Court case, J.E.M. Supply v. Pioneer Hi-Bred International, affirmed that plants could be patented. Monsanto was not directly involved with this case, but this decision helped the company protect its patents on seeds and plants. There has been controversy over this because Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the majority opinion on that case. Thomas worked as an attorney for Monsanto back in the ’70s, raising the question of bias in the decision.

It should be noted, however, that the vote in the case was six to two, so Thomas was not a deciding vote.

Another controversial figure is Michael Taylor, the current Deputy Commissioner for Foods and Veterinary Medicine of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Taylor has worked for both Monsanto and the FDA

herbicide that didn’t affect corn, which you had to use more often. Roundup is a broad spectrum herbicide. Roundup kills both monocots, that are like grasses, and dicots, that are like leafy plants. Farmers love it because they get bigger yields with less labor going into it.”

Shintani said most of the benefits of GMO crops are seen by the producers, which is a big problem in their acceptance publicly, but he does see some benefits to consumers, as well. For example, while there haven’t been many natural famines in recent times, they will always be a problem, and GMOs can help with that.

“We’re having exponential population growth, and the amount of resources available for producing food is going down,” Shintani said. “The amount of arable land is decreasing because we’re developing a lot of it. We also have soil erosion. Over-farming is depleting the soil, and water has become an issue. Food security is important. It will take a combination of this genetic engineering and small farming to do this.”

There are numerous scientific studies on the safety of various GMO crops, but the results are contradictory. Many state that these foods are safe for human consumption, while many say that they can cause health issues across the spectrum. Researcher bias can color or change the results of either study result.

Monsanto Company is one of the main corporations behind the production and sale of GMO crop seeds, and they have multiple patents on seeds they have created. These patents make accessibility to seeds much more difficult, even for research.

“It’s really important to understand that they totally control their seeds,” said Kiki Corbin, a naturopath, pastoral counselor and the director of Label GMO Nevada. “They have a right to choose who does their research and uses their seeds.”

This makes many activists and others question the reliability of the studies conducted that point to GMOs as safe. Because of this, Corbin and many others want more research to be done on these crops.

at various times in his career. At the FDA, his positions have ranged from staff attorney to his current position, and at Monsanto, his positions included Vice President for Public Policy. Taylor has also been the Administer of Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Taylor was at the FDA when GMOs were given the designation of “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS), and although he is not listed on the policy document that stated this, he is rumored to have been a co-author.

In addition to this, current Secretary of Agriculture and former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack is well-known as an ally of Monsanto and biotechnology, based on his policies and voting history. The Biotechnology Industry Organization, a lobbying and advocacy group for the biotechnology industry, also named him Governor of the Year.

These incestuous relationships between Monsanto and government institutions have made people distrust the laws. These kinds of relationships between big business and government are not uncommon in the United States, but they create fear in the minds of citizens who worry about conflicts of interest at the highest levels of government. The distrust of the FDA created by these relationships makes many people, like Corbin, believe that the GRAS designation given to GMOs did not

have sufficient research to back it up.

“The FDA arbitrarily decided, without enough research, that GMOs are safe and similar enough to normal crops that there is not a need for more research,” Corbin said.

“Common sense says that this can’t be true.

These organisms don’t naturally cross-pollinate outside of their species. They’re taking these foreign genes and inserting them into our food. They modify corn so that the corn itself produces a pesticide that kills bugs when they eat it. It’s not the same. It can’t be safe.”

Shintani explained that bt-corn uses a naturally occurring gene to make the corn produce a pesticide that creates holes in the insects’ stomachs when they eat the corn. He explained that the gene is targeted at specific species, not humans. He said that this is not known to be toxic to humans.

“It’s one of these proteins that won’t affect humans,” Shintani said. “It’s not toxic to humans, at least not to my knowledge. It’s like certain antibiotics you take. They kill the bacteria, but they don’t hurt you.”

Many people, including Corbin and GBCFC manager Amber Sallaberry, believe that GMOs cause many different medical issues, ranging from allergies to tumors and cancer. Shintani said that the studies have to be looked at individually to discern whether they are valid and unbiased, but he does not believe GMOs to cause any medical issues.

“I don’t think long-term medical issues are going to turn up, but I think it’s always good to be aware of these things,” Shintani said. “Personally, I’m fairly confident that that’s not going to happen, but I can’t be 100 percent certain.”

unjust unjust desserts desserts Although Shintani expressed near certainty in his beliefs that GMOs are safe for human consumption, others are just as certain that they are not. Because of this, Corbin started the Label GMO Nevada project back in December. Her main goal at the time was to get a bill into law that would require labels on packaged foods with 0.9 percent of genetically modified materials them. She calls this the “right to know.”

The bill, AB330, was sponsored by Assemblyman Paul Aizley, District 41. He said that the Americans with Disabilities Act already requires labels on products that contain allergens. He said it should be the same for GMOs. The bill died in committee on April 12.

Although that bill is dead, the Grassroots Action Network is still striving to get something passed into law in this legislative session while preparing an initiative for next session.

“We would need to gather 101,000 signatures of people who voted in the last election,” Corbin said. “We would get help from the big non-profits to pay for the signature gatherers. It takes a well-oiled machine to be ready to do an initiative.”

They recently became a 501(c)(4) non-profit and will soon be applying to become a 501(c) (3). Corbin stated that they are excited that the

Although both Boxer and DeFazio are Democrats, the bill has Republican support in both the House and the Senate and independent support in the Senate, as well.

“Americans have the right to know what is in the food they eat so they can make the best choices for their families,” Boxer said in her press release.

“This legislation is supported by a broad coalition of consumer groups, businesses, farmers, fishermen and parents who all agree that consumers deserve more—not less—information about the food they buy.”

group is now official because they will be able to raise money and organize more easily. She believes that bringing other nonprofits into their cause will help make the process of getting the bill into law easier.

“Nobody has any money, so we will never get anywhere if we don’t come together, raise money as an organization together to educate the public and to give money during the campaign contribution time,” Corbin said.

“This way, we, as an organization, have some clout. With our bill dying, I learned about the politics behind the scenes.”

Now, Grassroots Action Network will focus on education, growing their numbers and bringing the other non-profits working for similar causes so that they can work together. The education portion of this is one that Corbin plans to work on personally, too.

“One of my campaigns is going to be to go personally visit farmers who are doing GMOs,” Corbin said. “I’ll take a video and sit down and talk to them. Beg them to quit doing it. Even if they don’t do it this year, because this is planting season right now, at least we will have made some input. I can show them how it’s going to save them money, but it’s going to take education.”

Shintani agrees with this assessment.

“I know some people say if you label it, people will get an impression that it’s bad, but I think people should have choices,” Shintani said.

“Consumers should know what they’re putting into their bodies. If they choose not to buy something made with a GMO food, then I think it’s their right to do that. I think transparency is a good thing. I think some of my colleagues would disagree with me, but I think people should be informed about what they’re having.”

Shintani also said that many of the misconceptions he believes people have about the science behind GMOs would be alleviated if scientists and other citizens were better at communicating these concerns and topics to each other.

“I wouldn’t say I’m pro-GMO; I wouldn’t say I’m anti-GMO,” Shintani said. “We’re researchers. We understand the science and technology behind it. There should be an open dialogue about these things. If not, nothing can change either way. I’m not going to try to change anyone’s opinion, but I’d like to hear theirs. And I think they want to hear ours.”

He said that he understands there is a mistrust of scientists and that open discussion would help to change that. Doing your own research and not always believing what you hear is something that Shintani also believes in, especially for this topic.

“I believe it’s safe,” Shintani said. “I think there are a lot of safeguards that go into determining the safety of these foods. There’s review from the FDA, USDA and EPA. That’s not to say that there’s not any need for concern. You should never take things for face value. It’s not bad to question scientists, government or authority.”

It will be a giant marionette version of the Ichthyosaur, Nevada’s most famous fossil. Upon completion, it will take its rightful place out on the playa at Burning Man. It doesn’t look like much yet, just some large pieces of wood that resemble skeletal parts. But it’s a fitting first project for the collaborative artistic space that is the Generator—resurrecting something old, perhaps even primal, but changing the way it functions by pulling the strings and making it dance. For the early members, the “old” means forming a tribe based on the value of collaboration and trade; the “new” means inhabiting a new physical space.

The warehouse is huge, but on a Sunday just two weeks after getting the keys to the place, people have congregated in the center of the warehouse, and it’s already bustling with activity. The sound of power tools and the smell of paint signify that creativity is in progress. Still mostly empty, the acoustics amplify the noise, and it’s very loud—but that doesn’t stop people from shouting friendly conversations. Kids are running around, playing in the warehouse’s as-of-now empty rooms.

It’s either idyllic or dystopic—like Burning Man, perhaps it’s a bit of both. Either way, big things are being created here.

The latest in a line of local collaborative ventures centered on the cultivation of a local “share culture,” the Generator’s space is also the biggest. Share culture is multifaceted—it includes the

co-opting and reclaiming of unused public and private spaces (“Space, the final frontier,” Feature Story, Jan. 17) and the exchange of goods, resources and knowledge outside of a structured market. It has its roots in nearly every industry, including manufacturing, education, art, technology and agriculture.

While it’s not even officially open to the public yet, it has a small crew of members who see potential in open spaces, who want to bring Burning Man’s philosophies out of the desert. According to member Kris Vagner (a former RN&R contributor), in the spirit of share culture, the Generator adapted Burning Man’s ethics, which include “radical inclusion ... gifting ... decommodification ... radical selfreliance ... radical self-expression ... communal effort ... civic responsibility ... leaving no trace ...

participation ... [and] immediacy.”

Artists are encouraged to open themselves up to collaboration and opportunity, but the ethics require a level of personal responsibility (“Your mom doesn’t work here.

You’re responsible for your own stuff and your own good time.”)

Everyone at the Generator is excited about making their mark, and there’s plenty of room to do so. The creative use of traditionally utilitarian, industrial space seems to have become Northern Nevada’s new niche. And it’s a mission synonymous with the West.

But with an influx of new space, are there enough new ideas in Northern Nevada to fill it?

Matt Schultz, executive director of the Generator, certainly thinks so.

“Reno is in the midst of a renaissance,” he says. “It’s really intrinsically important. There’s this maker and DIY [do-it-yourself] movement in Reno.”

Schultz, whose spent many years building installations for Burning Man with the Pier Group, isn’t the first to iterate this sentiment about Reno. Many want to help improve the region’s reputation through homegrown movements. Northern Nevada has its quirk going for it, and Burning Man shows that it’s a region edgier than Silicon Valley’s shiny start-up scene, and still a bit grittier than Austin’s or Portland’s transition into youth utopias. Taking a leaf out of other successful organizations—Schultz cites Reno Art Works, the Salvagery and Bridgewire Makerspace as important local endeavors—Schultz hopes the Generator will be another aspect of the burgeoning art and technology movement in Northern Nevada by offering space, time and tools.

“We want to be able to explore large-scale art,” he says. “It’s really hard to find the space to do that without monetary support.”

This year, he predicts that 70 percent of the Generator’s projects will be for Burning Man. Eventually, though, he wants to move beyond that. For him, decommodification reigns supreme. Money is another tool, not an endgame.

Money is treated almost as if it’s toxic to creativity: Yes, it’s needed to handle logistics, but much can be done without it.

The Generator functions as a non-profit. Many of the founding board members are longtime Burners. Donors from the Bay Area funded the space for two years, including the salaries of some of the board members.

While there is some overlap with what the Generator offers and what other makerspaces provide, large-scale projects will be the Generator’s strength. Schultz acknowledges that Reno’s scenes can be quite incestuous. But he doesn’t want the Generator to compete with other local art and technology-centric projects. Like everything else he envisions, he wants to see a community-wide collaboration take root in Reno.

“We want to work with everyone,” he says. He hopes each place will offer something unique to fill a niche. The Generator is big enough to house other organizations who already have their own spaces, and there’s already moves in the works.

With funding secured, customizing the place is a priority. Although the Generator has only been at its Sparks location for a couple of Volunteersweeks, there are already “stations” established, including the woodworking area where the Icky is being built. Right now, the space functions mostly on donated equipment, including a CNC machine, tools and materials. Schultz says he hopes others step up to donate resources, such as bronzemaking supplies.

Each artistic medium will have a designated space. “It’s split up via docks,” he says, based on art medium—wood, ceramic, metal and more. A kitchen and bar are in the works, and he hopes this common area will encourage “less division among the groups.”

A performance area, complete with a stage and mirrors lining the walls, will soon be built.

Downstairs, an art gallery will be set up, but “nothing will be sold,” he says. “We want people to make stuff, show it and celebrate it.”

The warehouse has two levels—the upstairs rooms will become a lounge (“Where people can come and escape the build”) and a computer lab with a 3-D printer, laser etcher, soldering equipment and other electronic items.

And adding some murals and plants, Schultz hopes, will ultimately “make these places look less warehouses.”

Structured workshops and classes are a possibility for the future, but Schultz hopes that learning will happen organically. Exchange of knowledge is part of the philosophy—it requires people willing to learn and willing to teach.

“That’s our idea at the moment,” says Schultz. “We don’t have formal classes. We want it to be accessible. ... It’s meant solely for the community to build.”

Schultz is looking for artists to take residency at the Generator, and while he strives for inclusiveness, he wants to ensure that no one tries to disrupt the friendly and creative vibe. There is a level of selection he wants to uphold. “No people who are overly intense. And it’s not just a burner space, but open to everyone.”

The Generator will be open to the public later this month. So far, Schultz is pleased with the responses and suggestions for the new place.

It’s all part of the big picture.

“It’s a proletariat art renaissance,” he says. “It’s not about communism—it’s about, you come in, and you make it. You are what you make it.” Ω

Artist Nate Clark has been thinking small.

After a friend by jokingly suggested that Clark break up the Brad Bynum large pieces into something smaller so his poorer friends could afford to buy his art, bradb@ news review.c om Clark decided to make a series of artworks in which the larger pieces were composed of many smaller works. The results of this new approach are currently on display in his exhibition Once Again: Three Series of Small Works at the Never Ender Gallery through June 3.

The first series is a collection of linen wall works, the second, small acrylic paintings, and the third, a collection of small drawings.

Originally from Olympia, Wash., he moved to Reno to attend the University of Nevada, Reno. He graduated from the university’s BFA program in 2010. He’s a prolific artist. In addition to this exhibition at Never Ender, he has upcoming shows at the McKinley Arts Center in June and the Holland Project in July.

The first series in Once Again, was inspired by a recent trip to visit his girlfriend’s grandfather, a man Clark describes as “a photographer and a storyteller,” who has recently had lung troubles. Each linen piece looks like an oversized, all-white Polaroid with the central piece loose, slightly oversized, and air, like a partially deflated lung or balloon. The pieces seem to invite touching, like bubble wrap.

“I’m all right with that, because I know I’d want to do the same thing,” says Clark, who admits he likes to cop feels on the art in museums.

reveals a variety of colors outlining the rectangles. It’s a nice surprise, nearly the opposite of those disappointing paintings that look great look from across a gallery, but fall apart up close.

“These paintings are just the process of looking,” writes Clark in a gallery artist statement. “The structure helps me find what is next, or where they are headed.

They are a study of something, but I do not know what quite yet. It has something to do with craft and a steady hand. It has something to do with color and feeling. I need objects like these in my life to keep me grounded and moving forward at a steady pace.”

The final series is a collection of paired drawings, each 4 inches by 4 inches, and each twin a set of inexact replicas. He’d make a mark, or a series of a marks, in one square and then attempt to repeat that same mark in the other square. But he was not totally precise in the recreation—making the same gesture, but allowing for natural variation. The individual drawings are abstract and seemingly chaotic, but paired with the inexact twins, the reveal a sense of order and natural variation.

“I was not totally interested in exact copies,” he says.

“The work lives somewhere between the two squares, somewhere in between,” he writes in an artist statement.

Looking at all the pieces in the gallery, the smaller works seem to be parts of larger wholes, and it’s difficult to imagine how successful the individual small works will look on a wall away from their sisters.

“Well, in that case, I’d encourage people to buy more than one,” says Clark. Ω

and a few arcade games. Buffalo transplants Paulie and Jennifer own Paulie’s. When I went in with my friend Brett and his kids, just Jennifer and her kids were working, and they made us feel very welcomed.

We ordered a large Paulie’s pizza ($18 for 18 inches), a regular cheese ($14 for 14 inches) and 20 medium wings ($17). While we waited for our food to arrive, Jennifer brought us some beers ($4) from the bar.

The beer choices on draft are fairly limited with just Sam Adams, Shock Top and Peroni to chose from, so I hope they expand the options. Our wings arrived first, and I liked how meaty they were, but I wish there had been more sauce on them. The carrot and celery situation needs some help because we only got a few tiny slices wrapped in plastic.

When the pizzas were brought out, I was glad we had two hungry kids with us because these things

were huge. The Paulie’s pizza was topped with pepperoni, sausage, meatballs and onions. They didn’t scrimp on the toppings, but the meatballs were sliced too thin. The crust on both pizzas was light and chewy, while the sauce had a bit of sweet and spicy flavor happening.

Topped with lots of cheese, I definitely enjoyed the pizza.

If only I had stopped here, I wouldn’t have left Paulie’s crying.

When we placed the original order, we added on the Momma Mia wings (three for $5), which were listed as being incredibly spicy. Jennifer cautioned us and advised we eat first. Then she had us sign a waiver.

I have to admit, I blew this off and thought I was tough, so I signed my life away and awaited my Momma Mia wings.

When the wings arrived, they didn’t look so scary despite the bright red tinge to them. I took a large bite, liked the flavor and then the burning pain started. My eyes watered, and my lips and mouth burned. I could feel that bite slowly inching its way down my throat like burning lava. Thankfully, Jennifer was there to save us with a big spoonful of agave nectar. I soon bolted to the bathroom to wash any leftover wing sauce remnants from my hands. Looking in the bathroom mirror at my tear-stained face and swollen lips, I realized I might be the dumbest person in the world.

I learned a little science on my trip to Paulie’s. The Scoville scale is used to measure spicy heat. To give you an idea, a habanero pepper has up to 350,000 Scolville units.

The Momma Mia sauce has 2 million units. You know what else has a Scolville rating of 2 million?

Pepper spray. Now I know I’m the dumbest person in the world.

Despite my mouth on fire, I had a great time at Paulie’s. It’s an enjoyable atmosphere, the owners are friendly and food is good. The Momma Mia challenge, even with the pain, was a lot of fun, and if you think you can handle spicy things, you have to try it. Ω

Pain & Gain Michael Bay’s latest, Pain & Gain, has all of that Michael Bay crap that makes him one of my least favorite directors.

Actually, that’s an understatement: I think Michael Bay is basically a satanic cinematic force, with most of his films sustaining an artistic level I shall equate to a sickened elephant farting in a circus tent by that’s been set aflame by dangerous clowns.

Bob Grimm That said, he has actually made a few movies that I don’t hate. My favorite Bay bgrimm@ newsre view.c om film would be Bad Boys II, in which he seemed to be poking fun at himself. That slo-mo tracking shot of a bullet passing through Martin Lawrence’s ass is still the apex of Bay’s career. I also liked his innocuous sci-fi offering The Island, which actually featured edits more than a second long.

So I reluctantly admit to sort of liking Pain & Gain, mainly because Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson are a total crackup as two bodybuilders who take part in a kidnapping/extortion plot that actually really happened. Yes, this messed-up movie is actually based on a true story, and it’s remarkable how much of this insanity is accurate.

Wahlberg plays Daniel Lugo, a fitness instructor who is no doubt one of recent American criminal history’s greatest stupid assholes. When Lugo feels like his life is in a rut, he hatches a plan to kidnap a wealthy gym member (Tony Shalhoub) and extort money from him. With two gym members (Johnson and Anthony Mackie) in tow, he goes through with it, and things quickly spiral out of control.

Bay uses the film to satirize the vapid ’90s, with his lecherous camera lingering on many bikini-clad asses and boobs. Yes, we get plenty of Bay slo-mo and, of course, the below-the-chin, looking up 360 degree tracking thing he loves so damned much.

The edits are at breakneck speed, and get a little tedious. At more than two hours, the movie is a bit too long, and yet somehow too fast at the same time.

Its saving grace is that much of it is quite funny in an over-the-top, outrageous kind of way. Just the sight of Wahlberg, Johnson and Mackie all swollen with extra muscle pounds put on for the shoot is funny. At one point, Bay gets Wahlberg to strip down to his Calvin Klein white boxer briefs, a nice homage to Wahlberg’s infamous advertising campaign.

As he did with Bad Boys II, Bay celebrates disgusting excess entertainingly, as long as he’s shooting for laughs.

No, we don’t get a car chase with corpses spilling out of a truck and getting run over (darn!), but we do get Shalhoub sloppily eating a taco while blindfolded.

(This somehow manages to be funny.) We also get dogs with severed toes in their mouths, Rebel Wilson using nunchucks during a sex scene, and a dude getting his head crushed by weights.

Wahlberg is too much fun when he does comedy, always playing it straight during the most outrageous of situations.

Johnson plays his part as a big religious hulk who just wants to be a lover but can’t help beat the crap out of every other person he meets. This may be my favorite Johnson performance yet.

Is it sloppy? Yes. Is it way too hyper at times? Yes. Does Michael Bay commit many of the usual cinematic affronts that have made him hated by those of us who sometimes like to watch a movie without having our eyes and ears violated? Oh, hell yes.

But Pain & Gain is OK, and is actually some sort of movie miracle when considering the dumbass who made it. Up next for Bay would be Transformers 4, of course.

I’m thinking that film will once again remind us that Bay is a scourge on the land of cinema who only gets it right on the rarest of occasions. Ω

Spike Lee tried to get a movie about American hero Jackie Robinson, starring Denzel Washington, off the ground for many years, but couldn’t make it happen. I get a feeling that Lee, who made one of the great biopics with Malcolm X, would’ve done something really special with the subject.

This effort from director Brian Helgeland (Payback) is OK, even really good at times, but gets awfully hokey in too many moments.

Chadwick Boseman is a great pick to play Robinson, as is Lucas Black as Pee Wee Reese. Harrison Ford delivers big time as Branch Rickey, the man who brought Robinson to the majors, and Christopher Meloni leaves the movie all too soon as Dodgers manager Leo Durocher, who was suspended the year Robinson made his debut. Boseman shines, even when the movie doesn’t, and it’s a lot of fun to see Ford do something this craggy and different. I’m thinking Robinson went through some major hell during his baseball times, and this movie only scratches the surface. It’s good, but it should’ve been great.

The Company You Keep

Robert Redford directs himself as an upstate New York lawyer with a past who must flee his life when a nosy journalist (Shia LaBeouf) discovers his true identity. The film gives us fictional characters that were former members of the very real Weather Underground, and they are played by the likes of Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte and Julie Christie. LaBeouf does much of the heavy lifting, and it’s some of his better work in quite some time. Redford is just OK here, as is his movie. I can’t say it blew me away, but I didn’t dislike it, either. It’s just one of those movies that gets by with semi-competent directing and acting without truly wowing you. Others in the cast include Stanley Tucci, Chris Cooper, Terrence Howard, Richard Jenkins and Sam Elliott.

Evil Dead

The low-budget classic horror film gets a slick new remake and loses the iconic character of Ash in favor of a girl trying to kick heroin. Mia (Jane Levy) is trying to sober up, so friends and family take her out to a secluded cabin. They find a mysterious book in the basement, somebody reads it out loud, Mia goes for a walk in the woods, the woods treat her badly, and gore aplenty ensues. While Levy is fine in the central role, and Lou Taylor Pucci is good as one of the guys who should’ve gone to a hotel instead, the film has a few too many uninteresting characters. Shiloh Fernandez is a dud as Mia’s brother, and Elizabeth Blackmore is only there so somebody can cut her own arm off. Let it be said that moments such as the arm-cutting are well done. The film is a true gore fest. While it is OK, and doesn’t slander Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, it’s not a horror classic by any means. Like most good horror these days, it’s just good, and that is all.

Jurassic Park 3D

Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur fantasy is still one of the best adventure films ever made, but the new 3-D retrofit winds up muting the presentation rather than expanding it. Unlike, say, James Cameron’s Titanic, which looked and felt like it was meant to be shot in 3-D, the presentation here feels forced. The color is diminished, and the scope seems “squished.” It’s not awful, and I’ve seen worse 3-D, but it fails to enhance the film much. Some theaters are offering the movie in its original 2-D presentation, and I would recommend revisiting it in one of those theaters for sure. The combination of practical and computer effects to create the dinosaurs has easily stood the test of time. The dinosaurs continue to look amazing. Watching the 3-D version, I did notice that Jeff Goldblum sticks his tongue out a lot when he speaks. It’s creepy.

Mud

It’s official: Jeff Nichols, who gave us the brilliant Take Shelter, is a writer/ director who stands among the best of them.

Matthew McConaughey plays the title character, a chipped-tooth, wild-haired drifter living in a boat in a tree along the Mississippi. Two kids, Ellis and Neckbone (Tye Sheridan of The Tree of Life, and Jacob Lofland) stumble upon him, and find themselves part of his strange

and dangerous world. McConaughey is just catching wave after wave lately, and this is his best one yet. He makes Mud a little scary, yet charming and cunning. Sheridan and Lofland are terrific as the young friends who should probably stay away from guys living in boats in trees. The cast also boasts Reese Witherspoon, Michael Shannon and Sam Shepard, all of them equally great. Ladies and gentleman, we have the year’s first “excellent” movie. Jesus, it took long enough.

The Place Beyond the Pines

Tom Cruise gives it his all, but his all isn’t enough to save this sci-fi effort from feeling like a bunch of movies you’ve seen before. He plays Jack, a man on a sweep-up mission of Earth 60 years after it was beat up by aliens. He has a lot of dreams featuring a dream woman (Olga Kurylenko) and the Empire State Building, and seems to feel right at home when visiting the planet. Thing is, he’s far too young to have been around when the Empire State Building stood tall—or is he? The movie wants to be clever, but you’ll see the big twist a mile away. As for the visuals, some work (the Empire State Building in ruins is cool) and some don’t (most of the other effects). Morgan Freeman shows up as a survivor dude who smokes cigars, which means he’s smoking cigars that are over 60 years old. He must’ve grabbed a thousand of them and the world’s greatest humidor as the apocalypse unfolded.

Gerard Butler stars in one of the more ridiculous action films you will see this year. He’s a Secret Service agent on duty the night something very bad happens to the president (Aaron Eckhart), and he winds up with a desk job. When some nasty North Koreans hilariously infiltrate the White House and hold the president and his cabinet hostage, it’s time for Gerard to dispense with the paper clips and pick up an automatic weapon! This movie has some tragic flaws, including terrible CGI and mawkish patriotic crap that distracts rather than making the heart swell (Melissa Leo screaming the Pledge of Allegiance as she is dragged to certain death comes to mind). You aren’t going to catch me calling this a good movie, but I won’t fault you for enjoying it to some degree if you choose to see it.

James Franco is in over his head for Sam Raimi’s mostly lame prequel to The Wizard of Oz. The title character calls for somebody with that old school Hollywood charm like Robert Downey, Jr., or Johnny Depp. Franco looks like a kid playing dress up here, and he’s not even the worst thing about the movie. That would be Mila Kunis looking completely lost as the witch who will become that witch we all know from the original Oz. I’m sorry—that witch isn’t supposed to be all corseted and hot. As for Rachel Weisz, she fares best as yet another witch, while Michelle Williams is just serviceable as Glinda the Good Witch. Raimi relies heavily on CGI effects—big surprise—and they look pretty crappy for the most part.

This is an underwhelming movie in much the same way his Spider-Man 3 missed the mark.

It’s overblown, misguided and odd.

Derek Cianfrance follows up his brilliant Blue Valentine with a film bigger in scope but still starring Ryan Gosling. Gosling plays Luke, a motorcycle stunt guy who finds out he has a kid and wants to be a part of his life.

Problem is, the kid is the product of a one-night stand, and the mom (Eva Mendes) has moved on. Luke resorts to robbing banks, which culminates in a meeting with a rookie cop played

by Bradley Cooper. The film then focuses on Cooper’s character for a segment before dealing with Luke and Avery’s kids (played by Dane DeHaan and Emory Cohen) when they are teens. The movie is long, but never boring, and it crackles most when Gosling is on screen.

It’s all about the sins of the fathers, and Cianfrance presents it in a way that resonates. Also stars Ray Liotta and Ben Mendelsohn.

What’s cooking?

Mojo Green How would you like your mojo, if you could have it made to order? Scrambled, over-easy, maybe poached … what by Laura Davis about green?

Just as green eggs don’t sound strange in the imaginary world of Dr. Seuss—in the musical world of local outfit Mojo Green, that’s also the unconventional color of choice, used to describe the band’s inherent instrumental sexiness.

“We pull from each other,” says Carter of their chemistry.

“We build each other up and help one another grow as musicians,” Bain says.

And grow they have, not only in skill, but in member count and audience accessibility as well. In the first two years of the band, there were no vocals, no lead singer, just a couple of guys with instruments jamming it out.

But what the band was rocking instrumentally, particularly its solid horn section provided

by Trevor Hollingsworth, a.k.a.

“T-Rex,” Monty Adams, and Kevin Thomas, it was lacking in its namesake sex appeal. Where was the mojo?

Enter Carter.

“Once we met Jenes, it was all over.” Bain concedes of an Earth Day performance during which Carter joined the band onstage for some impromptu free styling.

“We had to find someone who could feel the mojo!” Thomas says, of Carter, whose innate ability to channel some green was undeniable.

“They lured me in,” Carter agrees with a grin.

Jenes brought to the mix a soulful R&B vocal strength, accompanied by spitfire energy and sashaying hips that get even the older members of the audience swaying back and forth. Her presence pulls the crowd to the stage like bees to honey.

“That’s the first instrument people are inclined to,” bassist and back-up vocalist Trevor Rice says of the power of vocals.

With the member count continually rising, one might worry there are a few too many cooks in the kitchen, particularly when it comes to the songwriting process and getting everyone’s input in the pot. But this is where the band’s complimentary mojo once again comes into play.

“There’s creative freedom, [but] with seven members writing music, we always try everything out.” Bain says.

As for what gets to stick? Let’s just say, the mojo rules.

“If you play it and you get a rush,” Carter says. “[Then] we drop it like it’s hot.” Ω

So while traditionally you might think of your mojo coming in, say, a warmer hue, when singer Jenes Carter prances onstage and grabs the mic in a little black dress and sky high heels showcasing her Olympian-toned legs, and asks that very question of you, don’t be afraid to think outside the box for the answer. Of course, she’ll gladly fill in the blank herself if you get shy: “Green!”

With an unconventional name, comes an unconventional line-up.

The current members, who’ve been a staple on the Reno jam scene for four years, are about as eclectic as they come, in both musical preferences and style. There are no costumes—no coordinated dance moves. Just a shared love of music and what it means to each individually.

“It’s church,” says drummer Frank Fletcher, a.k.a. Fletch. “It’s therapy. It’s my bliss.”

For guitarist and founder Tim Bain, it’s always been about the dream. “I was a guitar player with a vision of horn-driven funk,” he says of his inspiration for starting Mojo, which, despite going through a few line-up changes, has never been known by any other name—and they all agree the current arrangement smells the sweetest.

In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo marks the date when the Mexican army defeated French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In the U.S., it’s become a day to celebrate Mexican heritage. While some people may find fault with taking a minor regional holiday and turning it into another marketing ploy to sell beer and Margaritas, others embrace the chance to bring Mexican culture into the mainstream. A local celebration of Cinco de Mayo will take place at the Grand Sierra Resort this weekend. There will be vendor booths, carnival rides, Mexican dancing horses, a soccer tournament, amateur boxing bouts, wrestling matches, a children’s playground and the Miss Cinco de Mayo contest. There will also be plenty of food and live music, including headliners Los Dareyes de la Sierra on Saturday, May 4, and El Flaco Elizalde y Su Banda on Sunday, May 5. The festival is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., May 4-5, at the GSR’s northwest parking lot, 2500 E. Second St. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under age 12 and seniors age 65 and older. Proceeds from the event will benefit Casa de Vida and Wanda’s Baby Closet. Genoa Cowboy Festival The town of Genoa will host the third annual gathering of cowboy poets, storytellers and musicians this weekend. One of Nevada’s oldest settlements, Genoa will pay tribute to the pioneers, ranchers and cattle herders that settled in the verdant Carson Valley in the mid-1900s. Festival highlights include ranch tours, Native American music, dancing and crafts at the Native American Historic & Cultural Center, Western art and crafts, demonstrations and live entertainment, including performances by Hot Club of Cowtown on May 3, Riders in the Sky on May 4 and the Saddle Cats on May 5, at various venues in Genoa.

The event kicks off on May 3 and continues through May 5. Day passes range from $10$30. Concert tickets range from $25-$30.

Elvis Lives!: The Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Event The King of Rock ’n’ Roll lives on in the hearts and minds of his fans and in the traveling production that comes to town this weekend to close the 2012-2013 season of the Broadway Comes to Reno series. Audience members who are old enough to remember The King in his heyday, as well as younger folks who’ve only heard of him, will see Elvis at various stages in his career—from the early rock ’n’ roll days of the 1950s to his Las Vegas concert years of the 1970s. Elvis tribute performers will be joined by a live band, back-up singers and dancers, including an Ann-Margret tribute performer, along with imagery from the Graceland archives.

Cirque de Mar: Sea Meets Desert

Reno Blues Society Spring Dance

Burning Man is a little more than three months away, but art camps are racing against the clock to get their installations and other playa art ready in time. The Pier Group, a group of local artists, builders and poets who built the Pier and Pier 2 art installations for Burning Man 2011 and 2012, are working on their next project, the Ichthyosaur Puppet Project, a.k.a.

Dr. Camp’s Holy Bones. The project is a full-scale, 50-foot ichthyosaur puppet to be built at this year’s Burning Man. The third annual Cirque de Mar is a fundraiser to help these creative folks bring their vision to life and will include performances

by The Atomiks, Drinking with Clowns and Reno Siren Society. The event will also feature a portable model of the ichthyosaur marionette as well as a raffle of a Burning Man ticket. The show starts at 9 p.m. on May 4 at Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor, 71 S. Wells Ave. Admission is $15. Visit www.drcampsbones.com.

In sickness and in stealth This woman and I were involved 13 years ago, before I met my wife, but she was married then. She got divorced and moved away. We reconnected recently on Facebook, and I discovered she’s now only 20 miles away. I told her I’m happily married, and I’ve never cheated on my wife, but I would risk everything for her and want to meet her for an intimate encounter. (She and I had great sex, far better than I have with my wife.) She said she still has feelings for me but is now happily remarried and couldn’t cheat on her husband.

She says he has done so much for her, including taking her and her three kids in during her divorce. I’m perplexed. She cheated on her first husband with me, and we had lots of fun. I thought the leopard couldn’t change its spots. How could it be OK for her to cheat then and not now?

No, a leopard does not wake up in the morning and think, “Maybe I’ll do paisley today.” Humans, on the other hand, have an irritating tendency to fail to conform to pat aphorisms. For example, this woman, who, in the past, has provided you with some seriously excellent adulterous sex, now refuses to run off to Goodwill to get back her leopard-print blouse with the scarlet A on it.

Amazingly, she feels it would be wrong to reward a guy who’s “done so much” for her by doing you whenever you can both sneak out for a nooner.

As for why she cheated in the past, maybe she was young and narcissistic and thought being unhappily married was an excuse to be happily adulterous. She’s since picked herself up a set of ethics—maybe after seeing the ravages that conscience-free living can cause on husbands and children. And tempted as she may be, she seems to realize that the best way to avoid going around feeling all queasy with guilt is to avoid sexual multitasking: trying to gaze in one man’s eyes like you love him while trying to remember what time you were supposed to meet the other man at the motel.

Economist Robert H. Frank explains in Passions Within Reason that moral behavior seems to be driven by emotions. Frank sees love as a “commitment device” that bonds people beyond what would be in their sheer self-interest (like running off to the first opportunity for better sex that moves back to town).

In other words, if you focus on what you’re grateful for about your wife and engage in little loving touches and gestures, you can reinforce what you have—which seems fairer than rewarding her for making you happy by giving her believable excuses for your disappearances. Remember, they’re called marriage vows, not marriage suggestions. Ω

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Imagine

you’re in a large room full of costumes. It’s like a masquerade store during Halloween, plus a storage area where a theater troupe keeps the apparel its actors use to stage a wide variety of historical plays. You have free reign here. You can try on different masks and wigs and disguises and getups.

You can envision yourself living in different eras as various characters. If you like, you can even go out into the world wearing your alternate identities. Try this exercise, Taurus. It’ll stimulate good ideas about some new self-images you might want to play with in real life.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): I know a

devotee of Tibetan Buddhism who got an unexpected message from her teacher. He told her she has made such exemplary progress in her quest for enlightenment that she has earned the ultimate reward. When she dies many years from now, the teacher said, she will enter nirvana! She will have no further karmic obligation to reincarnate into a new body in the future, and will be forever excused from the struggle of living in the material world. Although her teacher meant this to be good news, she was heartbroken.

I nominate him to be your role model, Leo. May he inspire you to stamp your personal mark on a universal archetype or put your unique spin on something everyone knows and loves.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): This may be

the best week in a long time to practice the art of crazy wisdom. And what is crazy wisdom? Here’s how novelist Tom Robbins described it to Shambhala Sun magazine: It’s “a philosophical worldview that recommends swimming against the tide, cheerfully seizing the short end of the stick, embracing insecurity, honoring paradox, courting the unexpected, celebrating the unfamiliar, shunning each and every orthodoxy, volunteering for those tasks nobody else wants or dares to do, and perhaps above all else, breaking taboos in order to destroy their power. It’s the wisdom of those who turn the tables on despair by lampooning it, and who neither seek authority nor submit to it.” And why should you do any of that weird stuff?

Robbins: “To enlarge the soul, light up the brain, and liberate the spirit.”

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “Why should

we honor those that die upon the field of battle?” asked Irish poet William Butler Yeats. “A man may show as reckless a courage in entering into the abyss of himself.”

A woman may show similar bravery, of course. In my astrological opinion, that’s the noble adventure beckoning to you, Libra: a dive into the depths of your inner workings.

I hope that’s the direction you go; I hope you don’t take your stouthearted struggle out into the world around you. All the best action will be happening in that fertile hub known as your “soul.”

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Historical

records suggest that ancient Greek philosopher Democritus went blind late in his life.

There are different stories about why. According to one account, he intentionally did it to himself by gazing too long into the sun.

That was his perverse way of solving a vexing problem: It freed him from the torment of having to look upon gorgeous women who were no longer interested in or available to him because of his advanced age. I hope you won’t do anything like that, Scorpio. In fact, I suggest you take the opposite approach: Keep your attention focused on things that stir your deep attraction, even if you think you can’t have them for your own. Valuable lessons and unexpected rewards will emerge from such efforts.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

Search your memory, Sagittarius, and recall a time when you pushed yourself to your limits as you labored over a task you cared about very much. I suggest you borrow the spirit of that arrangement and invoke it in your own life. In other words, be highly civilized and smartly sophisticated part of the time, and be wild and free the rest of the time. And be ready to go back and forth between the two modes with grace and ease.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): In the

wild, a tiger’s diet consists entirely of meat.

The big cat loves to feast on deer and wild boar, and eats a variety of other animals, too. The hunt is always solitary, never done in collaborative groups. That’s why the creature’s success rate is so low. A tiger snags the prey it’s seeking only about five percent of the time. It sometimes has to wait two weeks between meals. Nevertheless, a tiger rarely starves. When it gets what it’s after, it can devour 75 pounds of food in one sitting. According to my astrological analysis, Aquarius, you’re like a tiger these days. You haven’t had a lot of lucky strikes lately, but I suspect you will soon hit the jackpot.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): The French

word flâneur is a meme that refers to a person who strolls around the city at a leisurely pace, exploring whatever captivates her imagination. To the casual observer, the flâneur may seem to be a lazy time waster with nothing important to do. Bibo gets the boot

Paul Martin The closure of a business in Reno is hardly ever news, but when word began to leak that Bibo, 680 Mt. Rose St., is closing its doors, people got excited. It’s hardly rumor at this point, but here’s the story from Paul Martin’s point of view. Martin, over the last 10 years, built that business from nothing to one of the most thriving coffee shops in Reno.

Why is Bibo Mt. Rose moving?

That’s a good question. I really don’t know the reasoning for it. I do have to say that we were in the middle of positive lease negotiations. Like six months ago, we got a request for a letter of intent from the landlord. We did so. A few weeks later, we received a request for a lease proposal. We said what we would like to do is two five-year lease options, with some maintenance. We wanted to put in a new espresso machine and some more plumbing. Basically, after 10 years, the place needs a cleanup. So we were ready to invest about $20,000 or more into the store. And that was spelled out in these two five-year leases. Then things kind of went dark for a while. The next letter we received was one spelling out, you know, “Do your improvements, and I’ll give you a one-year lease with some amendments.” Those were pretty difficult [requirements] to run a business with. My wife and I thought about it for a few weeks. We came back, and we said,

Somebody just shot me a link to it. I haven’t really had a good chance to look at it yet.

It’s an open letter to the people, Truckee’s Coffebar, who are apparently the ones planning to move in there. Have you come up with any possibilities for a move to stay in the Old Southwest?

“Let’s do it.” We knew it would be a difficult year to continue on, but we just thought we were better off doing it that way. So we said, “Yes,” and the landlord, Marvin [Grulli], said, “No,” and apparently he had already been out prospecting clients, basically giving people our walk-in numbers and customer counts.

We’re looking at two options. We have to be out by July 1st. It’s really important to us to keep our employees intact. Without a new space, we’ll probably have to lay off about six or seven people. We’re working to get a spot open on California Avenue by July 1st.

It’s a much smaller spot, so it won’t have the same kind of come-down-and-hang-out, gathering place, refuge [feel] as here. It’ll be a neat opportunity for us to stay alive in the old Southwest, and then we’re really banging our heads around in this block to get something done within a few houses of here.

He had similar issues with another popular place, Sezmu, next door, as I recall. This sounds very similar to what happened to that restaurant.

Yeah, Larry [Dunning] was the owner of Sezmu. He and his wife owned Sezmu. I don’t know the exact specifics about it, but I do know that Larry wanted to continue in that space after ... I believe he had a three-year lease without an option. He was ready to move forward, and he was pretty devastated. I saw him the morning Marvin told him he wasn’t going to grant a lease option on that. Then the space sat dark for two years.

There’s a salon next door that I don’t believe

So you’ll open a place on California just to have something going to keep the employees working?

We had that spot in 50 W. Liberty. That was my mistake, I blew it on all aspects there, but it’s a standalone spot, and it’s within a couple of blocks of where that was. So we’re kind of redoing that [Liberty] spot, and hopefully recreating the feel of our original Bibo here on Mt. Rose on Mt. Rose again. Ω

THE WONDERS OF HIGH ROCK CANYON The High Rock Canyon is unequaled in the northern Great Basin for its natural and cultural resources. The awe-inspiring canyons and volcanic tablelands where perennial waters flow, the large meadows, and rim rock create habitat for its wildlife. The magnificent species include: raptors, mountain lions, California bighorn sheep, antelope and wild horses.

The History Indigenous Peoples arrived here around 10,000 BC, leaving traces of their lifestyle throughout the region.

In 1843, John C. Frémont led a party of explorers down High Rock Canyon during his famous Western Expedition. In 1846, Jessie Applegate and Levi Scott established the Applegate Trail that served as an alternative road to Oregon. Peter Lassen followed in 1848, blazing a side trail from the Applegate north of High Rock Canyon to his ranch in California.

In 1984, this territory became an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC). As a result, when people head out to this area they should be aware that special rules apply to recreation and commercial uses on the High Rock Canyon to help protect its resources.

High Rock Canyon’s isolated location, rugged travel conditions, and lack of development, preserve a setting and experience close to what the early pathfinders experienced. Over 5,664 acres encompass a road corridor, Stevens Camp and the Pole Corral areas.

We all know the stories of ridiculous behavior on the part of white European-Americans in the 19th century in terms of greed and slaughter on native species, capped by the horrific decimation of the great North American bison herd.

In Nevada, this unfortunate track record of rapaciousness can be seen with the saga of the great cutthroat trout of Pyramid Lake. For those of you who are newcomers, you might be interested to learn that 100 years ago, the fish being pulled out of Pyramid were literally the largest in the lower 48. Mighty monsters of 20-30 pounds were the norm, the biggest of them all was a whopping 41 pounder, and the inevitable tall tales told of fish in the 50-60 pound range. Trains were loaded up with those giant trout, destined for the restaurants of Denver, Omaha and Chicago, where the awesome Lahontan Cutthroats were scarfed by those who adored the meat of the “salmon trout.”

But these huge, gorgeous fish, while abundant, weren’t infinite. Duh. OPINION

and brought them back to local fish hatcheries to see if maybe, just maybe, they could strike gold.

Well, sonuvabitch. They did! And from those eggs, those precious eggs from a little creek way the hell out in the sticks, came the resuscitation of The Greatest Trout In The West. The kind of fish for which guys travel to Alaska. And now, after being lovingly nursed at our hatcheries, they’re back in their ancestral home, growing bigger and fatter as we speak.

In the last year, dozens of anglers have caught 15-25 pounders, fish that left them sputtering into their Budweisers. The really cool thing is—these fish are just adolescents.

In a few years, who knows how big they’re gonna be? So I hope these dudes who are landing 17-pounders this year are doing one thing— throwing ’em back. Ω

Indeed, it only took us honkies about 60 years of insanely shortsighted overfishing to wipe ’em out. By 1940, they were gone. And that was that.

Chalk up another eco-black mark for us WASPS. But hold on. Guess what? Curveball comin’! This isn’t another one of my envirolyptic superdoom stories.

Surprise! Because the big fish of Pyramid are—OMG—back?

Yep. It’s an amazing story that’s taking place at Pyramid right now.

I’m gonna run out of room, but if you haven’t heard, google the story from the New York Times (April 24) or the Reno Gazette-Journal (Feb. 25), and you’ll read the incredible tale of how this remarkable comeback happened.

How an old coot 100 years ago stocked a little creek up on Pilot Peak, near the Nevada-Utah border, with his favorite fish, and how those fish turned out to be a genetic treasure, waiting to be harvested. That little creek was wiped out a few years ago in a fire, but not before some real smart biologists got some of those trout and their eggs

High Rock Canyon began to form some 15 million years ago. Massive lava flows spilled across northwest Nevada forming a broad volcanic tableland.

Wind, water, and continued volcanic activity created gorges with towering rhyolite cliffs.

National Conservation Lands High Rock Canyon is a part of the National Conservation Lands scenic and historic trails, wild and scenic rivers, wilderness areas, national monuments and conservation areas whose mission is to conserve, protect and restore nationally significant landscapes that have outstanding cultural, ecological and scientific values for present and future generations of Americans.

Friends of Black Rock - High Rock concentrate stewardship efforts in this remote region on northwest Nevada. Trails cleanup, wildlife/drought monitoring, invasive species, and springs monitoring is some of the work being done this summer.
