Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I don’t know what got me thinking along this tangent recently, but I’ve been thinking how lucky I am. It might have had something to do with the bombing at the Boston Marathon. I always feel appreciative of the things we have as Americans when I see the exception that proves the rule.

I mean, we’ve got a population of 314 million. As awful as that act of terrorism was, there are places in the world where an act like that happens almost every day.

I don’t feel safe, don’t get me wrong, because safety in this country is primarily illusion. I mean, we live in houses where glass windows are supposed to keep bad people out. But I’m not afraid to be in crowds, and I hardly ever hesitate to write what I’m thinking, particularly when there’s a national debate about gun-violence control.

I’ll also admit, I’ve got it pretty good. I live in a great house. A couple of years ago, I managed to keep it from foreclosure by never getting behind on my payments while I spent tens of hours every week for about four months trying to make the government’s bailout of the banking and mortgage industry work for me as an American citizen. But if you looked at that house—OK, admittedly, I still haven’t done my spring cleanup—you’d be jealous.

I guess I do have a little fear of the future, since those same people who fraudulently caused the banking and mortgage crisis also got my retirement. People who had a lot of money in the markets or a more diversified portfolio, though, made out all right. I was lucky. If you count all of my retirement and the bubblicious equity in my home, they only got me for about $300,000.

Maybe $340,000 if you include the fact that I’m still a bit underwater.

So when I see those representatives in Washington, D.C., calling for a terrorist to be tried under laws that deprive an accused murderer but for-sure American citizen of constitutional rights, I know we’ll see justice.

Those electeds have my back, just like they had yours over the past few years. We’re just lucky that way.

Re “Nevada vs. teen pregnancy” (Upfront, March 7): Although Nevada’s teen pregnancy rate may have gone down, it has also become more socially acceptable for teens to become parents. We see teen parents all over the media with shows like 16 and Pregnant, which are glorifying teen pregnancy. Our Family World, a family statistic website, in 2011 stated, “Although teenage pregnancy reached an all-time high in 1991 and declined steadily for several years after, as of 2006, the overall number of pregnant girls age 13-19 is climbing once again. Basically, for every 1,000 born each year, 42 of them are to very young mothers.”

Nevada may have gone down on ratings, but teen pregnancy is rising.

Re “Let’s have sex education” (Left Foot Forward, April 11): There is one thing that is not being brought up. Nevada also ranks 50th in the country for its statewide education system. I know this to be true because recently I was talking with someone at a bar and stated this fact, and someone from behind me said, “At least we aren’t last.”

So the solution to teen pregnancies being proposed is for the worst teachers in the country to tackle this issue? And we expect to have a positive outcome? This doesn’t seem likely. Also, has anyone conjectured that the reason Nevada has such a high teen pregnancy rate is because in most of Nevada, there is nothing to do but offroad four-by-fouring, doing meth, and screwing? The reasons could also be cultural. We live in a state whose name is a Spanish word that also has a tremendous percentage of people whose culture comes from south of the border. In those cultures, having children at an early (by our standards) age is encouraged.

By framing this debate in our own cultural terms, could this not be a bigoted stance?

Welcome to Reno Re “Like riding a bike” (Green, March 2): Good read. I love what Reno Bike Project is doing in Reno. My wife and I who currently live and commute via bike in Portland, Ore., are moving to Reno for schooling.

I’m just concerned that its not going to be as safe for us to ride. Portland is a great example of how cyclist commuters and vehicle commuters can coexist. If everyone drove a car in Portland, the streets would be jammed with traffic every day.

However, they are not, and that is pretty amazing considering the size of Portland. If Reno wants to continue to strive to be a great healthy and safe community bike lanes are a must. I’m excited to move back to the Reno area and to join the cyclist community.

Re “Mining pays more” (Guest Comment, April 11): Richard Bedell may be a great geologist, but as a capitalist he is not so great. What happened to supply and demand? If it is so much more expensive to mine minerals than everything else, mineral buyers should pay the cost—not taxpayers.

That’s socialism. That’s government giving support to an unprofitable, failed industry. Even Republicans don’t like that (Solyndra). If they can’t find buyers for the true cost of their product, they should leave it in the ground and go exploit the cheaper minerals elsewhere until those are used up, and American minerals are suddenly worth the cost to produce them. Nobody wins Six missile types are usually cited as being in North Korea’s ballistic arsenal: the Scud D; the Nodong; the Taepodong 1, 2 and X; and the UNHA-3. Of these six, only two-the Scud D and the Nodong--are confirmed to exist (their nuclear capability is not); the rest, imitating North Korea’s own fantastic propaganda, are conjecture ad nauseam. Again with the lions, and tigers, and bears? Oh, my! Say! You know who is a nuclear-weapons state? China, France, Russia, the UK and the USA (cue flag). Throw in undeclared Israel for good measure and then wonder why Iran apparently wants some of that Los Alamos action, too. Yet, despite the mischaracterization by such “media” train wrecks as CNN and Fox News, India, North Korea and Pakistan are nuclear powers --and barely at that--not nuclear-weapons states. Indeed, as Adair and Daphne are dropped off at pre-school, there are today 4,100 operational strategic nuclear warheads and 17,300 total nuclear warheads in the world, according to the American Federation of Scientists: Russia and the USA have the lion’s share, the tiger’s and bear’s portions being instantaneously suicidal. Stop spending Recent events involving North Korea demonstrate the need for a strong defense. If we let the national debt get to the point where all revenue is consumed by interest payments and entitlements, we will be at the mercy of such nations as North Korea, Iran and China. We will be more vulnerable to terrorists with WMDs, as we would no longer be able to trace WMDs to their country of origin. We must write to our elected officials and urge them to stop deficit spending, and to adopt budgets that will pay down the national debt and looming entitlement shortages.

Gay marriage. I’d like to see some more progression with it. I have a lot of gay friends, and if they want the right to marry who they love, then they should have that right.

Neither, actually. I’m a born-again Christian, and I think changing the definition of marriage is completely against what I believe. I’m more up in the air with marijuana. I don’t smoke weed, but it’s just so out there. If you go to California, it’s so easy to get. I just hope it doesn’t trigger a chain reaction where they legalize a harder drug.

Life and how to live it This is an editorial that usually comes around about Thanksgiving. It’s often associated with our Buy Local campaign that always heats up for Christmas shopping, but it’s an idea that is just as relevant when Earth Day rolls around.

This time, we’ve got a slightly different spin on it: As often as you can, do your shopping at places you can walk to. Take Buy Local to a new level. As we’ve pointed out many times, the main problem with big box stores like Lowe’s is that they take their profits and send them outside the community. But another problem is that those huge warehouse stores create so much traffic that it is difficult to place them in neighborhoods where customers can walk or bike to them. Many people probably remember the various battles Renoites have had over the placement of K-Marts, Home Depots and Wal-Marts over the years.

All right, so imagine a world where it isn’t always necessary to drive to pick up the odds and ends you need to get along in this world. Can you imagine walking to Lowe’s to pick up a brass replacement spigot for your garden? Probably not, but many of us can imagine walking to Carter Bros. Ace Hardware in Reno or Shelly’s True Value Hardware in Sparks. It’s because businesses that don’t require so much traffic just to survive are able to get along in neighborhoods closer to your home. The flip side of this is that most local businesses—the ones that support other local businesses and schools and parks—can’t afford to be in those high traffic areas like Kietzke Lane and McCarran Boulevard.

Both. If a doctor says their condition can be helped with medical marijuana, then why not? Also, if people are concerned with the long- or short-term side effects of marijuana, there are so many other prescription drugs that can cause so many even worse side effects. And gay marriage, I think everyone should have the right to be with whoever they love.

Think about all those new little businesses in Midtown that everyone is having such a great time supporting. When you go there for cheese, or wine and painting, or used clothes, or a cup of coffee, you’re supporting that neighborhood. The more people are on foot, the safer a neighborhood is likely to be for everyone who lives there.

But when you think about it, if you’re willing to eschew some selection, it’s probably possible to satisfy many of your needs without getting into your car. Many neighborhoods in this city have pockets of commerce that are within walking distance.

This editorial is not designed to bag on the giant box stores—after all, our friends and neighbors are employed in those stores, too. This editorial is simply asking people to be more mindful of supporting the places right down the street. This idea is not only good for shoppers’ health, but it’s also good to help to reduce air and noise pollution and to slow down the speed of life, which benefits the entire community. Money that is spent in local neighborhood stores also comes back to our little league teams, our homegrown artists, our schools and our parks.

When you participate in the social routines of your neighborhood, you’re also more aware of who’s treating who well in your neighborhood, and who’s treating who poorly. Don’t you want to support the people who are nice to the people who have treated you well for so many years? Conversely, why would you patronize someone who mistreated businesses in your neighborhood? Often, it’s this knowledge that informs where we shop, eat pizza, or drink our coffee, now and in the future. Ω |

I also think it’s just silly, since so many people use it, for the government to not try to make money off of it. I don’t think it’s fair for anyone to judge who has the right to get married.

I’m totally for gay marriage, and I’m for medical marijuana, if it’s regulated properly. I just think that gay people should have the same inalienable rights as the rest of us. As for medical marijuana, I have seen cases where it’s very helpful for people with things like chronic pain, and it’s less damaging than other medications to their bodies.

A world of hurt. A state of confusion.

It’s almost too easy to poke fun at Nevada’s new multi-million dollar marketing slogan developed by an out-of-state advertising firm: “Nevada: A world within. A state apart.” Although Gov. Brian Sandoval called it “a grand slam” and Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki said the firm “nailed it,” others have by been less impressed, despite a brand Sheila Leslie new commercial featuring a catchy song, “Don’t Fence Me In,” by a Nevada-grown band, The Killers.

UNLV professor Robert Lang, a co-author of the study that informed the state’s economic development plan approved by the 2011 Legislature, wrote a guest editorial in the Las Vegas Sun deriding the slogan, saying “as an economic development label, it is a complete disaster.

A key finding in my study was that Nevada’s global connections—not its remoteness and separateness—are its best assets.”

The Las Vegas Sun published its own incensed editorial, excoriating tourism officials for portraying the state as the Wild West full of cowboys on the range and forgetting

about the vast majority of the state’s population generating the revenue for the state’s coffers in Las Vegas.

The editorial pointed out the unique attraction of Nevada’s status as one of the nation’s most urban and most rural states, offering tourists fun experiences in both environments in one trip and questioned the emphasis on the romanticized portrayal of rural Western scenes in a statewide marketing campaign.

Even the Sacramento Bee reflected on Nevada’s new slogan, with a reporter suggesting the “shameful” policy of shipping the mentally ill to other states via Greyhound Therapy certainly sets our state “apart.”

Within days, a statewide parlor game broke out with many wags offering their own multi-million dollar concepts, Mad Men style, often invoking Nevada’s less pristine history involving brothels, nuclear waste, or last place rankings in just about everything.

The new and forgettable tag line is almost as bad as Reno’s proposed

slogan a few years ago, “A Little Left of Center,” which at least had the advantage of making you think a few seconds before discarding it as ridiculous.

In the end, even the state’s sunniest tourism boosters had to admit this slogan was not nearly as good as the last: “What Happens Here, Stays Here.” That slogan was easy to remember and played to Nevada’s seamier reputation as a state that would forgive the occasional indulgence. It sounded a lot more like the truth than “a world within” or “a state apart.”

The $8.5 million cost of the underwhelming branding slogan, website and public-relations campaign is insulting to a citizenry whose children don’t have universal access to kindergarten, never mind pre-school, whose mentally ill suffer on the street, and whose state workers have endured untold indignities during the recession as they watched their salaries shrink along with their health benefits. It’s offensive that legislators who insist on outcome

measures for every penny spent on full-day kindergarten shrug their shoulders when confronted with spectacular failures in the business sector, continuing to insist we need to spend millions on a slogan to bring in more tourists to pay our taxes so we won’t have to.

The word around town was that the state should have copied the Reno eNVy concept and used it to tell tourists they would eNVy our natural resources, our gaming entertainment, our weather, etc. In fact, the Reno eNVy website offered a description that might have suited the new campaign much better: “Reno eNVy is about pride and pioneering spirit.

It’s about reverence for the past and an irreverent celebration of individuality. It’s about personal expression with an edge. It’s a misfit culture with its own set of values. It’s about good times in God’s country. Go ahead and do it. Nobody’s looking, and even if they are, who cares?”

That sounds more like Nevada to me. Ω

Nevada’s pot o’ green Two weeks ago, a Senate committee cleared a bill that, at a whopping $20,000 per licensing fee, permits medical marijuana dispensaries to operate in the state of Nevada. While medical marijuana itself is already legal in Nevada, the creation of dispensaries will bring a highly lucrative industry by Chanelle Bessette to the Silver State that will contribute some much-needed revenue.

Less than a week after the bill was cleared, the first school dedicated to educating Nevadans on how to properly own and operate a medical marijuana dispensary officially opened. The “Budtender School,” which is run by the national Cannabis Career Institute, operates workshops out of Las Vegas-adjacent Henderson to impart the necessary business and horticultural skills to make a dispensary a success.

According to an interview conducted by the Associated Press with the CCI founder Robert Calkin, “a successful marijuana dispensary can earn $250,000 a year … and the average dispensary in Arizona can make up to $10,000 a day.”

While recreational marijuana won’t be legalized during this legislative session in Nevada because a bill to legalize it died in an Assembly committee on April 12, the recent legalization in Washington and Colorado--as well as an increase in overall national support--might mean Nevada is right around the corner.

According to a poll conducted last month by the Pew Research Center, 52 percent of Americans favor marijuana legalization. For the first time ever, there is a majority prolegalization vote on this long-debated issue.

In the U.S., marijuana has been one of those substances that has long been controlled by a nanny state that is trying to save people from themselves. Its association with alternative lifestyles and perceived addictive and “gateway drug” qualities (See? Drug

But even the National Cancer Institute recognizes marijuana as a legitimate method of symptom management which includes such benefits as “antiemetic effects, appetite stimulation, pain relief, and improved sleep.” The scope of marijuana as medicine has been extensively studied, but access and legality of studies have remained relatively stunted and still have room for development.

I don’t smoke pot, but to me, it’s like any other personal liberty: If you aren’t deciding for yourself, then Uncle Sam is deciding for you. If marijuana can be consumed responsibly and if punishment for misuse is strictly enforced (like DUIs are for alcohol), then Nevada could easily take the opportunity to boost state revenue and, in its long tradition of doing so, lead the nation in openminded liberties. Ω

Aaron Smith, a reporter for CNNMoney, wrote at the end of 2012 that estimated post-legalization tax revenue for Washington could run as high as (possibly overstated) $500 million. That’s not to mention the saved costs in law enforcement, legal fees, imprisonment and gangrelated activity that could be avoided with legalization. In 2011, the New York Times reported that Colorado pulled in $5 million in sales taxes from medical marijuana dispensaries.

That kind of revenue could be a much-needed boon to the Nevada economy.

The news of the patient exodus is in keeping with three Nevada traditions—the low priority of mental health in state budgeting, the practice of moving human problems out of jurisdictions, and of acknowledgement problems that were exposed by sources outside the state.

The Pyramid Lake Tribe is creating a new permanent exhibit at its museum and cultural center, dedicated to Tookwusadu Ki Soomoowapana (Remembering our vets).

Frack this A Pennsylvania court ruling could be a break in the fracking industry’s practice of settling pollution lawsuits with settlements that include confidentiality agreements, depriving the public of information on fracking.

“Nothing in [Pennsylvania] jurisprudence indicates that that right [of privacy] is available to business entities,” ruled Judge O’Dell Seneca.

It is unclear how much precedental value the ruling will have in other states, since Seneca’s ruling relied on the language of the Pennsylvania Constitution.

Fracking refers to SEGERBLOM pumping mixtures of water and sand into the ground to free trapped oil and gas in rock and shale.

The Nevada Legislature is currently considering legislation to give the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection regulatory power over oil companies using fracking in Nevada. The DEP itself says it doesn’t need the additional authority to regulate fracking, but Sen. Richard Segerblom said taking things out of the ground is different from injecting things into the ground and so Nevada law should be changed to reflect that. Last month, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management auctioned off 29 oil and gas leases in Elko County for $1.27 million, near a site where Noble Energy is planning fracking.

Gold slide rocks markets The national economic recovery may be anemic, but it’s having one effect on Nevada. Precious metals prices are plunging.

Gold and silver are experiencing what an April 19 NASDAQ statement called “a spectacular slide in prices.” Share prices for Barrick Gold, a Nevada operator, were down to $20 at one point, a price it has not seen in almost five years.

Precious metals prices traditionally rise in hard times and fall during prosperity.

Mining is not a large part of Nevada’s economy any more, but it is very important to some of the small counties.

Tradition Mental health runs up against recession and politicans Sacramento Bee reports on Nevada mental health practices have sparked a series of probes. by The U.S. Centers for Medicare Dennis Myers and Medicaid Services, Los Angeles and San Francisco city attorney offices, and an Illinois-based hospital accreditation body known only as the Joint Commission have all opened inquiries.

In 1954, Colliers magazine contrasted the glitter of Nevada casinos with the misery of some of the state’s citizens.

In a package of reports, the Bee found that Rawson-Neal in Las Vegas, Nevada’s leading psychiatric hospital that previously enjoyed a sterling reputation, had been putting patients—1,500 of them over a five-year period—on buses and sending them out of state. The Bee investigation was prompted by the case of James Flavy Coy Brown, a patient who was sent to Sacramento on a bus with a three-day supply of medication, four bottles of Ensure and some crackers. Brown had no connection with Sacramento and knew no one there.

“In recent years, as Nevada has slashed funding for mental health services, the number of mentally ill patients being bused out of southern Nevada has steadily risen, growing 66 percent from 2009 to 2012,” the Bee reported. “During that same period, the hospital has dispersed those patients to an ever-increasing number of states. By last year, Rawson-Neal bused out patients at a pace of well over one per day, shipping nearly 400 patients to a total of 176 cities and 45 states across the nation.”

Former state assemblymember and senator Sheila Leslie (and current RN&R columnist), who watched many of the fights over mental health funding, said when she first heard of the Bee series, she reserved comment until she could get more information on numbers and the rate of the problem.

“I think it’s shocking, actually, that apparently the protocol’s deteriorated to—we don’t really know the extent. I’d want to know more about how many there were.”

Now, having obtained more information, she said she’s dismayed by what is going on—but less than surprised.

“Now that I’ve read the whole story, that makes it pretty apparent that there’s a significant problem. I understand the desperation that some of the state mental health workers have, given the resources they have

Mental health has long been a sort of flexible joint in the state government budget, reduced when needed to accommodate other purposes. During the 1991-1992 recession, Gov. Robert Miller cut mental health sharply, to the point that some critics blamed him for specific violent incidents involving the mentally ill.

Although Nevada became a state in 1864, not until the 1880s was an asylum built and put into operation.

Instead the state housed patients at a facility in Woodbridge, Calif., for $7 a week.

In 1955, Colliers magazine reported, “Nevada hasn’t a single mental health clinic, although the mental illness rate there is probably at least as high as in the rest of the country. … It wasn’t until two years ago that the state belatedly inaugurated some kind of mental health program.” The state employed only two psychologists, one of whom told the magazine, “It is pitiable to see so many cases, especially of emotionally disturbed children, and not be able to offer them effective help.”

In 2001, the New York Times reported on its front page, “Pick almost any index of social wellbeing, and Nevada ranks at or near the very bottom of the 50 states, though it ranks near the top in personal wealth. Besides having the highest suicide rate ... a long legacy of low-tax, libertarian government, rural isolation and a steely tradition of self-reliance have combined with a population growth of more than 60 percent in the last decade that has left little sense of community to create a huge range of challenges to the state’s mental and physical health.”

Moreover, there have been unspoken policies of dealing with problems through avoidance. When he was mayor of Sparks, Bruce Breslow said his town should not have to participate in creating an area homeless shelter because Sparks

dealt with its homeless by driving them to Reno, confirming a longrumored practice. In 1988, Reno police officers Guy McKillip and Milton Perry were arrested for allegedly taking a blind, intoxicated man 30 miles out of town and abandoning him alongside Interstate 80.

But then, in 1999, Kenny Guinn became governor and eventually recommended substantial increases in mental health funding, eventually achieving an increase in excess of 300 percent. It was the only period of robust treatment for the mentally ill in state history. But it did not last. The period described by the Bee corresponds more or less to two relevant developments. One is the recession. The other is the governorship of Jim Gibbons,who slashed mental health funding and whose fiscal policies were then embraced by his successor, Brian Sandoval.

Gibbons recommended severe cuts, with the small counties particularly hard hit. Lawmakers resisted some of Gibbons’ recommendations, but he still had plenty of impact. Nevada appeared to be back in its traditional mode of minimal involvement in the problem.

A history of mental illness The Sacramento Bee has long covered “greater Sierra” news not directly connected with Sacramento itself. In 1935, the Bee received the first Nevada Pulitzer Prize for a series of reports by Arthur Waugh on political influence in the selection of two Nevada federal judges.

The Reno Evening Gazette buried the story on page 7 and then—18 days later—denounced the award in an editorial. It was not the first or last time locals would trivialize state problems because they were described by outsiders.

Some in-state mental health critics held their fire after the busing reports were published because state health and human services director Mike Willden is widely respected.

“Policies were not followed,” Willden told a legislative committee.

“We own it in this case. We blew it.

We’re taking corrective action.”

A statement by his department was released: “When the Department of Health and Human Services became aware of an incident where policies were not followed, we immediately initiated an investigation. As a direct result of the investigation, a more rigorous review and approval process for patient discharge is now in place.”

The critics were more inclined to criticize state lawmakers who went along with some of Gibbons’ cuts, OPINION

Pat Coolican called on Gov. Brian Sandoval to call “a special session of the Legislature this fall to address mental health.”

But others, including some former state mental health officials, excoriated the state for the scandal.

And for those not impressed by the ethics at issue, there were other reminders of the consequences of Nevada’s reputation.

“When you’re trying to relocate businesses into the state, I mean, normally the lifestyle issues are important in terms of persuading their employees, their top level manageBRYAN ment to come, and that has been an issue for us for a long time,” said former Gov. Richard Bryan.

Just as information reported by Colliers and the New York Times helped build Nevada’s reputation for a poor quality of life, the Bee reports are now seeping into the nation’s bloodstream. They have been picked up by Fox News, USA Today, Equities.com, LiveScience. com, ThinkProgress, GOPUSA, Allgov.com, and innumerable newspapers and broadcasts served by the Associated Press. The original stories, distributed by McClatchy News, have appeared in newspapers from Boise to Green Bay. State officials laid low and did not encourage additional news coverage. Neither the governor’s office or the state Health and Human Resources Department posted statements reacting to the situation on the news release pages of their websites, and Gov. Brian Sandoval had little to say except through a spokesperson. When a Las Vegas television station got an interview with him and asked him about a “policy” of busing patients, he said, “I disagree with the premise of the question. ...

An empty pill bottle with a little girl’s doll just a few feet away. by Sage Leehey These items all can be stumbled over, as Christi Cakiroglu, executive director of Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB), walks through the sage l@ biggest illegal dumpsite she has ever seen. The site is just north of Reno, at a newsreview.c om partially completed, abandoned housing development in Stead.

Cakiroglu explained how she is maddened by illegal dump sites for many reasons, one of these being the lack of thought people put into their purchases. She is particularly angered by a Christmas tree discarded at another site in Stead for this reason and because KTMB does a Christmas tree recycling event each year.

“If you’re going to buy a Christmas tree, you know you’re going to have to get rid of it at some point, right?” Cakiroglu said. “So where’s the planning in that? It just doesn’t make sense to me.”

Cakiroglu also urges people to try to contribute less to the overall amount of trash we discard daily, whether it is recycled correctly or not. She said that when she started at KTMB 10 years ago, there were 4.4 pounds of trash being thrown away per person per day and now that number has increased to 7.1 pounds.

In order to try to reduce this number, Cakiroglu and Jamie Souza, KTMB’s program manager, try to think about the amount of packaging connected to their purchases and buy items with less. For example, Cakiroglu noted that many types of toothpaste are sold in boxes, which are unnecessary.

“Recycling is great,” Cakiroglu said. “I’m a huge proponent of it. That’s what we need to be doing. But we also need to be consuming less. That’s that whole reduce in the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ process.”

This is especially important, according to Cakiroglu, because at this time, the people of the Reno area are only able to recycle plastic containers with openings that are smaller than the container itself.

Souza stated that, although disposing of products correctly may cost more, it is something that we must do for our society and future generations.

“The underlying issue is that people don’t have an ethic of care for their community, for the environment,” Souza said. “That’s where it has to start.

People have to find a reason to take pride in the land itself, and it seems like we’re lacking that today more than we ever have.”

war. His credentials are a good match for drug warriors like Richard Gammick, who likes to claim marijuana is not medicine. A resident of Clark County, Frye moved to Carson City full time for this legislature.

“There are economic benefits and tax benefits,” he said. “They estimate $560 million in sales in Washington,” one of two states that have made marijuana legal under state law.

“They have twice our population, but we have four times their tourists.”

He pointed to special events like Seattle’s Hempfest, a three-day gathering that features politics, arts and crafts and concerts and attracts more than a quarter of a million people without the remoteness, discomforts, or inconveniences—or high ticket prices—of Burning Man. “That’s twice the size of the biggest show we have in Las Vegas, the consumer electronics show,” Frye said. People use their credit cards heavily, he added.

There are political problems associated with marijuana legalization that surpass even those involving marriage equality. No matter what states do, marijuana will remain illegal under federal law, and state legislators are nervous about taking Nevada over that line. In California, legal medical use led to a thriving pot shop industry until U.S. attorneys—Justice Department prosecutors who act for the federal government— launched a campaign against the shops, rupturing the policy of President Obama, who had indicated he would not buck local sentiment. “What I’m not going to be doing is using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws on this issue simply because I want folks to be investigating violent crimes and potential terrorism [instead],” Obama said in Oregon in 2008. “We’ve got a lot of things for our law enforcement officers to deal with.”

But Obama, likely fearing comparisons to the U.S. attorneys scandal that afflicted his predecessor, has not reeled in the California prosecutors.

The U.S. attorney in Nevada at the moment is Daniel Bogden, one of the seven Bush prosecutors who were removed from office for what appeared to be political reasons, triggering the scandal. He was reinstated after President Obama took office. In a report on his office activities

in 2011, Bogden wrote, “Eleven defendants were convicted and sentenced for unlawfully distributing marijuana in Las Vegas through the operation of purported medical marijuana businesses, which are not recognized under Nevada law. The defendants included marijuana activist Pierre Werner, also known as Dr. Reefer, who was sentenced in November to 41 months in prison, and John Youngblood, of Los Angeles, owner of ‘The Happiness Consultants,’ who was sentenced in October to 21 months in prison.

So these Bogden activities may not be a good guide to what would happen under state legalization. Bogden’s use of the phrase “which are not recognized under Nevada law” may well indicate that he is complying with the president’s policy and respecting state practice. Nevada legislators, after all, failed to provide for a source of supply for patients. That phrase may well indicate that Bogden would not prosecute if marijuana shops were recognized under Nevada law, though he did not respond specifically to an inquiry along those lines.

In addition, he said the Las Vegas dispensaries he prosecuted were not medical dispensaries.

His office’s investigation indicated they were simply selling marijuana, without respect to prescriptions or patient cards. What he and other U.S. attorneys really need, Bogden said, is new guidance from the Obama administration to reflect recent legal changes outside the medical issue. The guidance they received from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder in 2009, in a document drafted by deputy attorney general David Ogden, said federal prosecutors “should not focus federal resources in your states on individuals whose actions are in clear and unambiguous compliance with existing state laws providing for the medical use of marijuana.”

Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN), says that while marriage equality and easier access to marijuana would be helpful to the state’s economy, he also thinks that both would be good supplementary factors, not economic engines.

Scary Nevada As Vassiliadis’ comments show, there is still the concern that unconventional activities and product lines could scare away prospective executives looking to relocate companies to Nevada. But Alvey said that after dealing with such executives over a long period, he became convinced that the risk is exaggerated.

“In my experience over the years, most of the people who told us, ‘We’re not coming there because there are brothels in the outer counties’ or ‘You have casinos there, and I don’t want my employees to be tempted to gamble,’ when you really dug down on most of those, I don’t know but suspect that most of those were covers. There were other reasons that they didn’t want to be here and they would use that rather than some other kind of excuse. … Like on the casino thing—and we did get that from companies. And we would point out to them that, well, you have it everywhere, you have lotteries, you have casinos now in many other places. There’s nothing unique about it. And people who were just using it … as a cover, generally tended to stick with their argument: ‘Yeah, but there aren’t as many of them and [here] they’re on every corner,’ etcetera, etcetera. People who were really just concerned about it, they would back off and say, ‘You know, you’re right. It’s in a lot of places.’ … And if somebody has a same-sex marriage phobia, they’re going to have that view regardless.”

Alvey said the marijuana/marriage issues can be approached like any other economic activity.

“You could go to any city commission, city council or county commission meeting, a legislative hearing, or you could look at almost any agenda of anything anywhere and you could tie economic development in to it somehow,” he said. “And this is another case of that. People are just looking for reasons that would help them do that. What we always ask, and what’s always asked of me is, What’s the model? What’s the return likely to be on that?

officials, that the marriage thing, gay excursion trips, things of that nature, you know, could have a definite effect with more of the tourism area than in the long-term sustainability of producing goods here in the market that are sold elsewhere, which I still think should be the primary focus.”

Both Vassiliadis and Alvey say that the growth of these activities elsewhere is one of the best things going for marijuana and marriage equality in Nevada.

It’s akin to a little verse a suffragette penned in 1914 when Nevada political boss George Wingfield threatened to leave the state and take his investments with him if voters approved women’s suffrage: We’re sorry to lose you, George.

But where are you going to go With all the women voting From Maine to Idaho?

“I don’t think we’ll have to market it,” Vassiliadis said. “I mean, I think that what people come to Vegas for, to Nevada for is a unique experience. … I don’t know that that [marijuana] would be unique as everybody’s moving toward that, anyway.”

That doesn’t mean Nevada should go out of its way to poke and prod folks who could create problems for the state, he said.

“The bar for us is a lot higher. The scrutiny on us is a lot closer than it is on Colorado or on New Mexico or whomever. Now, on domestic partners, we were sort of, not the earliest … but we were there pretty early. So that was pretty good. But on things like marijuana, again, what used to be viewed as a sinful thing or an outlaw thing, we’ve got to be a little more careful. Again, talk nicely to the mainstream and don’t step out front on it.” Ω

eno’s broadcast signals are expanding dramatically. In the past two years, traditional and non-traditional broadcasters have increased local content by four hours a day and are using cutting edge technology.

“We are the only station in the world that does it in this format,” said KRNV news director Matt McConico. His News 4 Forum at 11 a.m. with Melissa Carlson uses a program called “Google+” and Google’s automatic switching technology to bring anyone into a live conversation on TV. “If you want to be on TV, just contact Melissa, and we will get you on,” McConico says.

He wants it to be comfortable: “It’s like sitting down at the bar and talking to people.”

But, like most new technology, not

everyone is ready to belly-up and drink the super-spiked techno Kool-Aid. “It’s difficult to get people to want to put their face on TV and say, ‘This is my thought, this is my belief,” McConico says. “Getting people to change habits is difficult.”

In TV, success is gauged by how many people watch. It started just seven months ago, and McConico says KRNV’s Forum has about half of viewers of the traditional 11 a.m. newscast on KOLO (channel 8).

KOLO expanded its 11 a.m. newscast approximately two years ago, but its expansion from 11:30-noon

is mostly national news, not hyperlocal like KRNV can do. KOLO’s general manager did not respond to emails requesting an interview.

The local air-wave expansion also includes internet-based broadcasters. LoadedTV.com kicked off a Reno morning show, Wake Up Call, a year ago, operating inside the bar at Bonanza Casino from 9-10 a.m. Hosts and guests talk about close-to-home topics and incorporate on-screen social media. The challenge is getting advertising money.

“Here in Reno it has been a battle trying to explain the technology to people,” executive producer Stewart Campbell says. “People are more schooled in radio and television here. But the internet and social TV, to many people here, it is like, ‘What is it?”

While local broadcasts are expanding, the audience is increasingly split by internet, cable, gaming and other entertainment. According to the Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism “State of the News Media 2013” report, traditional broadcast TV audiences have fallen 5 percent in 5-7 a.m. broadcasts, 1.9 percent at noon, and down 7 percent in 5-7 p.m. Overall, in the past six years, the number of people watching news has dropped 6 percent, 1 percent every year.

The only place where audiences are climbing is before the crack of dawn, 4:30 a.m., according to the report. Now, Reno has that too.

“Right now, this is our big move,” said KTVN’s general manager Lawson Fox. His new 4:30 a.m. newscast replaced a national news program. “We think there is a great opportunity to serve viewers.

We know local news has more interest than a national product.”

The Radio Television Digital News Association survey in 2011 found a record expansion of local news nationwide. Meanwhile, Pew’s survey of viewers this year showed 31 percent of people who have stopped watching TV news say they are leaving because it no longer provides the news and information they had grown accustomed to.

So, the audience is shrinking and the amount of product is rising: more supply, less demand. Money is getting tighter, too. From 2006 to 2011, broadcast revenue has declined 36 percent, according to the Pew report.

“In a more competitive news environment in which revenues are shrinking you would expect more local news for all of these reasons, I think,” said David Ryfe, author of Can Journalism Survive? and associate professor at UNR’s Reynolds School of Journalism.

One of the reasons for more local news, Ryfe says, is that it’s cheaper to use the same staff stations already have or hire cheap local staff to repeat news. “You have to qualify that statement by saying that ‘news’ is relative. What we are really saying is that there will be more weather, sports and talk, not more gathering of new information, accountability journalism and the like.”

A one-day analysis of all four stations and their five expanded local broadcasts showed LoadedTV was all local content, but all talk and no pre-produced content. KOLO’s expansion at 11:30 included only national stories that were provided by the network, sponsored interviews, viral internet videos, celebrity news and weather. KRNV’s Forum OPINION

at 11, while it had the potential to be local, most of the live guests were not identified as local, and it included mostly national content with a celebrity interview that hyped pain killer medicine. KRNV’s other expanded newscast at 4 p.m. featured a live local report.

KRNV was the only station to feature sports and a local interview that did not appear to be sponsored advertising content. McConico says that broadcast has been the most watched in its time period since it started a year ago.

“Jim Rogers is the owner of channel 4 in town, and he is committed to local news in a way that other owners perhaps would not be. For instance, he has put on the air a few state politics-oriented talk shows that would not air on most news stations. So that is distinctive.”

Of all the local expanded newscasts, KTVN’s 4:30 a.m. had the longest block of hard local news at seven minutes, and most of it wasn’t repeated until almost an hour later. But the bright spot in KTVN’s expansion is not evidenced by the content analysis. It is who is doing the news and what their duties are later in the day.

KTVN didn’t simply do more news with the same staff as Ryfe says many local stations are doing these days when expanding. KTVN hired a new anchor and seasoned reporter, Neda Iranpour. KTVN’s general manager Lawson Fox says she will be reporting a few enterprise stories each week like her co-anchor John Potter already does.

“What is posted on the wall down there [in the newsroom] is to reflect what is happening in the community and to cover or amplify what people are interested in that day,” Fox said. “[Viewers] should learn something about it. Of course we need to do stories that have light shed upon them.”

That “light” is key for several reasons, one being that lack of that light makes it difficult for the public to participate in democracy.

“I think we over-estimate the ability of the average citizen to keep up with, understand, and make informed decisions about public issues—even in the best of times,” Ryfe said. “Less serious content makes that harder.”

“The lack of local content means that there are fewer reporters holding government accountable for its actions,” Ryfe said. “Regardless of whether any particular citizen is informed by this sort of news, it is a vital role that journalism plays as an institution.” Ω

The Hot l Baltimore Sometimes a play succeeds or fails for a very specific reason. A standout performance can save an by otherwise forgettable evening from obscuMark Dunagan rity. It can be harder to assign blame when a production inspires a shrug. The play, an artifact of the early ’70s that hasn’t aged well, concerns the denizens of a dilapidated hotel. The title refers to the lodging’s sign, which features a burned-out ‘e’ that nobody has bothered to repair. The characters include prostitutes, forlorn old folks and other such dregs. Word has it that the hotel’s demolition has been scheduled, casting a pall over the soon-to-be-displaced residents. Apart from this inevitability, the play is unencumbered by the restrictive burdens of narrative arc. The bad news is unveiled, and the characters idly inch toward whatever depressing future awaits.

Actors are often the easiest critical point of entry in theater because good and bad acting are easily identifiable. Alas, it is not very illuminating to simply praise or skewer actors. Though The Hot l Baltimore might be approachable through a thematic lens, this production practically begs to be addressed on the level of its actors. The most central character is a compassionate young prostitute. Here, the role is cast with SUBLIME- a girl (Breana Edgerton) who possesses no DoN’t MISS particularly prostitutional qualities, such as

eroticism or emotional damage. Edgerton doesn’t deserve to be picked on. She, like the rest of the cast, competently tries to make lemonade. Liza Naomi Abrams offers a strong characterization of the grandmotherly Millie, adopting a physicality and vocal delivery that suit the role. However, Abrams is visibly student-aged, so the illusion never takes flight. Canaan Peterson, entertaining and meticulously mannered as the curmudgeonly Mr. Morse, similarly comes across like a kid playing dress-up.

These casting issues unfortunately lend the production the air of a high school play, the only forum where a talented kid could play an old man and earn accolades.

Beyond high school theater, though, a young man probably shouldn’t be playing an old man.

It’s either poor casting or symptomatic of a much deeper problem if NRC simply does not have access to older actors anymore. Either way, the production suffers.

Some bright spots do ensure the audience’s interest is held. The art deco set provides a strong sense of time and place, and the grand hotel sign truly deserves to be seen. Wesley Gaines McNair as a young man searching for his grandfather is the best counterpoint to the show’s casting problems. He’s not only good—just as importantly, he’s believable and sympathetic. Tellingly, his motives and story are clear and compelling, adjectives that are at a premium in this particular hotel.

This award-winning play depicts struggling people doing their best to find meaning and happiness in dark times. Now, as ever, this is a worthy focus for theater. But while good theater tells the truth, The Hot l Baltimore is bogged down with pretense. Ω

ered by the Chinese emperor Shan Nong in 2737 B.C. One day while he was in his garden a few tea leaves fell by chance into his boiling water, which then gave off a rich, alluring aroma. The Emperor, upon drinking this brew, discovered it to be refreshing and energizing. At the beginning of the 18th century, tea arrived in North America, quickly becoming a desirable drink here as well.

There are more than 100 teas – eight varieties - in stock and you can buy them in the tin, 3 to 4 ounces ($8-$17), or a pouch, 2 ounces ($4-$15). The 46 black teas get their characteristic flavor and color from a natural oxidation process, which follows initial drying and rolling of the leaves after they have been picked. The teahouse’s 18 green teas are sweet and contain many of the vitamins and antioxidant properties of the fresh green tea leaf, making them highly regarded as a healthy thirst quencher.

Oolong tea, of which they have

two, is usually from China and Taiwan. It is a semi-fermented tea, a cross between green and black teas, which is widely prized for its digestive benefits. White tea is the world’s rarest tea as it can only be picked for a few weeks in any one year. Too Soul has two kinds of white tea. Their 17 herbal infusions are all blended using real herbs, flowers and seeds and contain no artificial flavorings or colorings.

Hibiscus is an herbal tea. They have two types of hibiscus teas.

Their six rooibos, or Redbush teas, are grown in South Africa.

Naturally caffeine free, it contains high levels of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals as well as anti-aging properties. Chai is the word for tea in many parts of the world. They have six chais. In India, it is usually prepared as a spiced milk tea using rich black tea, milk, a combination of various spices, and a sweetener.

My first cup was a Passion Fruit Mango, $2.15, naturally sweet, bursting with tropical fruit flavors and a light, strawberry red color.

Next, I tried something to help my sinuses, an herbal blend with peppermint and licorice root. The liquorice plant is a legume (related to beans and peas) that is native to southern Europe and parts of Asia. It is not botanically related to anise, star anise or fennel. This was light brown and had a tremendous aromatic effect. The peppermint was dominant, and the licorice root gave it a natural sweetness.

It’s a cozy setting, seating a dozen inside, nine in the vestibule, and 16 on the patio. There are plenty of accompaniments like bagels, muffins, cookies and scones, $2.50.

Wraps and sandwiches are $3.99$7.99. Quiche is $5.50. Vegan, gluten-free, and whole wheat treats are offered as well—all made fresh daily by local artisans.

The story of tea is truly intertwined with the story of mankind.

I think it might have been a cup of tea that made Mona Lisa smile. I know it was a cup of tea that helped the British throughout World War II: “Keep calm and carry on.” It has been said that tea is a pride and a joy. It both defines and transcends.

It dares into places where fear and pain rule and comes away with some little relief, some intangible comfort.

It is a soliloquy and a chorus that truly touches the soul, too. Ω

Jack’s off Oblivion

Tom Cruise spends most of Oblivion in a goofy, impractical looking leather space suit getup that clashes with his 2013 hairstyle and reminds me of Captain EO. It’s silly to notice these things, but Oblivion is the sort of film that causes you to notice such trivial matters, for the movie surrounding that goofy outfit is not very good. by Cruise himself is in typically fine form as Bob Grimm Jack, a scout/worker for the surviving human race after an alien attack 60 years previous in b g ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m 2017. The population of Earth has been sent to a Saturn moon, and Jack’s job is to make sure Earth’s energy resources are properly mined. He lives in a very stylish outpost with a hot partner (Andrea Riseborough), their work being monitored via video by Sally (Melissa Leo), an over nice boss.

National Conservation Lands are our nation’s newest public lands – 28 million acres that include National Monuments, National Conservation Areas (NCAs), wilderness, wilderness study areas, wild and scenic rivers, and scenic and historic trails.

These protected lands stand in stature with National Parks, National Forests, and Wildlife Refuges. They reflect a modern understanding that truly protecting and preserving our natural and cultural resources means keeping complete ecosystems and archaeological sites intact.

The Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trail National Conservation Area, in northwest Nevada, is part of this strategy. Chosen for its historical and ecological significance, this unique trail corridor and its viewsheds give you a glimpse of a landscape little changed since wagon trains of emigrants rolled through on their way west.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages the National Conservation Lands strategy and is striving to be a world leader in conserving and protecting landscapes, applying evolving scientific knowledge and bringing people together as stewards of the land.

But the challenge is that all 28 million acres of these lands are funded at just $2.40 per acre, compared to $30.56 per acre spent on National Parks.

Volunteers to assist in field work is more important than ever, as a result.

Friends of Black Rock High Rock is working together with the BLM to steward and advocate for our nation’s newest public lands in northwest Nevada – ensuring that they remain cultural, ecological, and scientific treasures for generations to come. Your volunteer support is needed.

Jack is haunted by dreams of a past Earth world that he is too young to have really experienced. In his dreams, he meets up with a woman (Olga Kurylenko) atop the Empire State Building, just like Sleepless in Seattle.

He’s found a cabin in the woods where he wears a Yankees cap and listens to Led Zeppelin. He seems very at home for a guy who supposedly never set foot on pre-invasion Earth.

Of course, there’s more to Jack’s universe than meets the eye. He eventually comes faceto-face with Beech (Morgan Freeman), a wise old, cigar-smoking man—those cigars must be 60 years old and awful—who is going to turn Jack’s world upside down.

The movie has some significant twists and turns, and some of them are not at all surprising. One particular twist caught me off guard, and is pretty clever. I won’t talk of these twists anymore.

As for the action, it’s subpar. I actually stumbled upon Cruise on Jimmy Kimmel the other night before I saw the film. I turned it on during a clip showing Cruise in a funny looking little spaceship, shooting a drone type thing out of the sky with a pistol and crashing in the desert. I thought it was a filmed Jimmy Kimmel gag because it looked a little cheap.

Turns out it was the movie’s major action set piece. Not too impressive.

While the Cruise performance is good, he does slip into that “Tom Cruise is determined and yelling!” mode, often reminding of his interrogation of Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men. Tom Cruise yelling is, sometimes, unintentionally funny.

Oblivion is derivative of many sci-fi films that came before it, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, Total Recall, etc. A little bit of all of those movies and more can be found among the plot threads and visual effects.

As for those visual effects, they aren’t too spectacular. I did like seeing the top of the Empire State Building protruding from gray Earth, the ground having risen to the famous landmark’s observatory deck.

Otherwise, there are some weak CGI recreations of demolished landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty.

The film sort of drags itself to its inevitable conclusion, providing no real surprises or excitement. The last scene involves something that is supposed to be triumphant, but is actually quite weird. It’s a head scratcher.

Joseph Kosinski whose only other directorial credit is Tron: Legacy, directs. Oblivion is a marked improvement over that fiasco. As with Tron, Kosinski is far more preoccupied with his visuals over substance. In both cases, the visuals aren’t anything to get excited about, and the stuff coming out of people’s mouths is even less compelling.

Cruise is in a sci-fi state of mind lately.

Up next, Doug Liman’s All You Need is Kill, where he plays a soldier caught in a time loop repeatedly getting killed by aliens (Cruise haters will probably get a kick out of seeing their nemesis getting repeatedly smoked).

Then, it’s Yukikaze, based on yet another alien invasion scenario.

In his last three films, Tom Cruise has played three similarly titled characters: Stacee “Jaxx” (Rock of Ages), Jack Reacher (Jack Reacher) and just plain Jack in this film.

Another useless factoid I fixed on while being mildly bored by the ho-hum Oblivion. Ω

Spike Lee tried to get a movie about American hero Jackie Robinson, starring Denzel Washington, off the ground for many years, but couldn’t make it happen. I get a feeling that Lee, who made one of the great biopics with Malcolm X, would’ve done something really special with the subject.

This effort from director Brian Helgeland (Payback) is OK, even really good at times, but gets awfully hokey in too many moments.

Chadwick Boseman is a great pick to play Robinson, as is Lucas Black as Pee Wee Reese. Harrison Ford delivers big time as Branch Rickey, the man who brought Robinson to the majors, and Christopher Meloni leaves the movie all too soon as Dodgers manager Leo Durocher, who was suspended the year Robinson made his debut. Boseman shines, even when the movie doesn’t, and it’s a lot of fun to see Ford do something this craggy and different. I’m thinking Robinson went through some major hell during his baseball times, and this movie only scratches the surface. It’s good, but it should’ve been great.

Evil Dead

The low-budget classic horror film gets a slick new remake and loses the iconic character of Ash in favor of a girl trying to kick heroin. Mia (Jane Levy) is trying to sober up, so friends and family take her out to a secluded cabin. They find a mysterious book in the basement, somebody reads it out loud, Mia goes for a walk in the woods, the woods treat her badly, and gore aplenty ensues. While Levy is fine in the central role, and Lou Taylor Pucci is good as one of the guys who should’ve gone to a hotel instead, the film has a few too many uninteresting characters. Shiloh Fernandez is a dud as Mia’s brother, and Elizabeth Blackmore is only there so somebody can cut her own arm off. Let it be said that moments such as the arm-cutting are well done. The film is a true gore fest. While it is OK, and doesn’t slander Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, it’s not a horror classic by any means. Like most good horror these days, it’s just good, and that is all.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

Yes, the sequel is an improvement over the original, but don’t get your hopes up too high. Dwayne Johnson joins something like his 18th franchise, as does Bruce Willis, in this confusing yet sometimes entertaining follow-up to G.I. Joe: The Sucky First Movie.

There are some good action sequences, including a snowy cliff sword battle and the destruction of London. There’s also a lot of clatter about Cobra Commanders and Snake Eyes and a bunch of other toy names I simply lost track of. Channing Tatum and Johnson have a great rapport, and a whole movie with them together could’ve been fun.

Unfortunately, Tatum makes an early exit, making way for The Smirk. Willis is OK here, but he doesn’t add all that much. Jonathan Pryce is fairly menacing as two characters: the President of the United States and his evil imposter. I’d tell you some plot details, but that would be a waste of space. Just know that if you plunk down for this you will see a couple of good action sequences and a whole lot of mindless crap.

Jurassic Park 3D

Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur fantasy is still one of the best adventure films ever made, but the new 3-D retrofit winds up muting the presentation rather than expanding it. Unlike, say, James Cameron’s Titanic, which looked and felt like it was meant to be shot in 3-D, the presentation here feels forced. The color is diminished, and the scope seems “squished.” It’s not awful, and I’ve seen worse 3-D, but it fails to enhance the film much. Some theaters are offering the movie in its original 2-D presentation, and I would recommend revisiting it in one of those theaters for sure. The combination of practical and computer effects to create the dinosaurs has easily stood the test of time. The dinosaurs continue to look amazing. Watching the 3-D version, I did notice that Jeff Goldblum sticks his tongue out a lot when he speaks. It’s creepy.

Robert Redford directs himself as an upstate New York lawyer with a past who must flee his life when a nosy journalist (Shia LaBeouf) discovers his true identity. The film gives us fictional characters that were former members of the very real Weather Underground, and they are played by the likes of Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte and Julie Christie.

LaBeouf does much of the heavy lifting, and it’s some of his better work in quite some time.

Redford is just OK here, as is his movie. I can’t say it blew me away, but I didn’t dislike it either.

It’s just one of those movies that gets by with semi-competent directing and acting without truly wowing you. Others in the cast include Stanley Tucci, Chris Cooper, Terrence Howard, Richard Jenkins and Sam Elliott.

Melanie’s luck runs out, she’s bonded with an alien and becomes Wanda. Wanda starts hearing Melanie’s voice in her head, begins arguing with herself, and the film becomes just about the dumbest thing you will ever see. Wanda makes it out to a desert commune where her uncle (William Hurt) is harvesting wheat in a rock. She has two boys after her, one of them being Melanie’s ex and the other being somebody who just doesn’t mind getting it on with an alien as long as said alien is inhabiting a hot American girl’s body. Seriously, I can’t even believe this thing even happened. Stay away, for the good of your health and all of mankind.

Olympus Has Fallen

Gerard Butler stars in one of the more ridiculous action films you will see this year. He’s a Secret Service agent on duty the night something very bad happens to the president (Aaron Eckhart), and he winds up with a desk job. When some nasty North Koreans hilariously infiltrate the White House and hold the president and his cabinet hostage, it’s time for Gerard to dispense with the paper clips and pick up an automatic weapon! This movie has some tragic flaws, including terrible CGI and mawkish patriotic crap that distracts rather than making the heart swell (Melissa Leo screaming the Pledge of Allegiance as she is dragged to certain death comes to mind). You aren’t going to catch me calling this a good movie, but I won’t fault you for enjoying it to some degree if you choose to see it.

Oz the Great and Powerful

James Franco is in over his head for Sam Raimi’s mostly lame prequel to The Wizard of Oz. The title character calls for somebody with that old school Hollywood charm like Robert Downey, Jr., or Johnny Depp. Franco looks like a kid playing dress up here, and he’s not even the worst thing about the movie. That would be Mila Kunis looking completely lost as the witch who will become that witch we all know from the original Oz. I’m sorry—that witch isn’t supposed to be all corseted and hot. As for Rachel Weisz, she fares best as yet another witch, while Michelle Williams is just serviceable as Glinda the Good Witch. Raimi relies heavily on CGI effects—big surprise—and they look pretty crappy for the most part.

This is an underwhelming movie in much the same way his Spider-Man 3 missed the mark.

It’s overblown, misguided and odd.

The Place Beyond the Pines

Derek Cianfrance follows up his brilliant Blue Valentine with a film bigger in scope but still starring Ryan Gosling. Gosling plays Luke, a motorcycle stunt guy who finds out he has a kid and wants to be a part of his life.

Problem is, the kid is the product of a one-night stand, and the mom (Eva Mendes) has moved on. Luke resorts to robbing banks, which culminates in a meeting with a rookie cop played

by Bradley Cooper. The film then focuses on Cooper’s character for a segment before dealing with Luke and Avery’s kids (played by Dane DeHaan and Emory Cohen) when they are teens. The movie is long, but never boring, and it crackles most when Gosling is on screen.

It’s all about the sins of the fathers, and Cianfrance presents it in a way that resonates. Also stars Ray Liotta and Ben Mendelsohn.

Now that you’ve envisioned the players, the setting conjured up is likely one of desert campfires, horses, and maybe moonshine. But this is where it gets interesting.

The three musicians playing their hearts out and stretching their vocal chords are not exactly where their accoutrement would have you believe—and they’re a bit too young for moonshine.

They’re standing on a street corner in front of the downtown Riverside Theater or, depending on the season, by the ice rink on the corner of First and Virginia streets, or even in their friendly, neighborhood park.

There’s no stage, no spotlight, and no sound guy to speak of—but there is an audience, even if on a slow day it’s just “an old guy with a poodle,” according to the boys’ description, or a family passing by in a minivan, handing a couple bucks out the window for a quick tune.

This is Farewell Belladonna’s optimal playing field. It’s where they do what they do best, “busking,” aka street performing, and it’s not only how they got their start, but how they ended up with the unique genre

description they choose to define themselves: “backstreet bluegrass.”

A passerby, stopping and listening to a few of the boys’ tunes, forever left his mark with his observation: “I like. It’s like backstreet bluegrass.” Or that’s what the band members remember him saying. And it stuck.

While Farewell Belladonna has since gained the notoriety to play at actual venues—most often Holland Project, and, coming up, the Knitting Factory for the Red Neck Ball and an Americana festival in Virginia City— they still prefer their modest origins as hard-working buskers.

“It’s great money, [we make] like $100 a night for a couple hours of playing,” violin/banjo player Bryan McAuliffe insists. Except for that first time they played in the park, and, as lead vocalist/stand-up bassist George Pickard recalls, “I think we made like six bucks.”

But it’s not about the money, although that’s an added perk, especially when you’re a senior at Reno High, as all three members are, and playing in a band is your afterschool job.

For guitarist Steven Sharp, the best part of busking is the people watching.

“You get to see all different kinds!” he says.

While the three friends started Farewell Belladonna primarily as a means to try out their new instruments, they stuck with it once they realized they had a good thing going.

And Pickard took on the role as songwriter, penning tunes that may sound upbeat and cheery, but upon closer investigation actually center on pangs of the heart.

“It’s all inspired from dark, depressing things … struggle,” Pickard explains. “They’re run-away songs. They talk about rambling and adventure, lost love;” appropriately things a lone ranger could relate to.

As for the mysterious Belladonna to whom they’re bidding farewell in the heart-felt songs?

“We like to leave things up to interpretation,” Sharp says.

But whoever she is, if she even exists, the “beautiful lady” (to which Belladonna translates in Italian), must have pierced a heart, one that Pickard attempts to mend with his stand-up bass, up-turned brows, and down-inthe-dirt lyrics, which he’ll forcefully croon—for a buck or two. Ω

Reno Jazz Festival Student jazz musicians from across the West will gather for the 51st annual jazz festival at the University of Nevada, Reno. These students will participate in clinics and workshops with some of the top jazz musicians in the industry, as well as compete for top honors at the festival. The festival will feature a concert by Grammy-nominated trumpet player and composer Dave Douglas, who will be joined

by UNR faculty jazz ensemble The Collective, on April 25.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at Nightingale Concert Hall, 1335 N. Virginia St., inside the Church Fine Arts Building at UNR. Tickets are $10-$20. Jazz quartet Matt Wilson’s Art & Crafts will perform at 7:30 p.m., April 26, at Lawlor Events Center, 1500 N. Virginia St. Tickets are $5-$27. Virginia City Grand Prix Motorcyclists will hit the trails up on the Comstock this weekend for the 42nd annual off-road motorcycle event.

Silverwing, lovePoP!, Six Mile Station, Emily Morris, Mason James Frey, Lizzie Cates, Grant Davis, Craig Prather, Mel Wade and Tom Van Ruiten are slated to perform at the 6 p.m. show. The lineup for the 9:15 p.m. show includes Danny Butler, Knowledge Lives Forever, Weapons of Mass Creation, Tovah Goodman, Tyler Stafford, Ruby Jaye Fradkin, Ryan James, The Pretty Unknown, CRUSH and Dirk Spaldo. I walked into my apartment and, to my horror, thought my boyfriend had been electrocuted. He was sprawled on the kitchen floor by an open electrical outlet with wires sticking out. There was a screwdriver near him, and the skin on his arm and hand was discolored. I ran over and started crying and shaking him. He started laughing and yelled, “April fools!” It hadn’t occurred to me that it was April Fools’ Day, because I truly thought he was dead. He says he thought I’d freak for a moment and then bust out laughing. I’m finding myself unable to forgive him, despite the fact that he says he is sorry and meant it to be a joke.

You, like a lot of women, probably love surprises— just not the sort that leave you kneeling over your boyfriend’s lifeless body.

The power of laughter can get a little oversold. If it truly were “the best medicine,” hospitals would skip the morphine drip and hang a chimp in overalls from that metal pole by the patient’s bed. Laughter does seem to be pretty good medicine for relationships—assuming a guy’s attempt to make a woman laugh doesn’t make her hold a grudge. Researchers have found that the ability to be funny is correlated with high intelligence—a plus in a partner—and with what cognitive psychologist Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman deems “the Woody Allen effect,” the possibility for even geeky-looking guys to get and hang onto girlfriends.

As for why your boyfriend pulled this stunt, the phrase “Seemed like a good idea at the time” comes to mind. A guy can get so caught up in making authentically gruesome char marks on his arm that he never considers how hilarious you’re likely to find it when the man you love appears to be lying dead on your kitchen floor. As for your inability to forgive him, it probably feels “safer” to cling to your grudge because it puts distance between you and the potential for future hurt. Unfortunately, it also distances you from the good stuff—love, affection, connection, and the continuation of your relationship.

To decide whether to break up with your grudge or your boyfriend, ask yourself a few questions: Does he now understand why you were so upset? Is this number 3,024 in a long line of painful idiocies or just a onetime painfully stupid thing? And outside of when he’s pretending to have died horribly, does he show you he cares about your feelings and well-being? Unless you have reason to believe Faked Death: The Sequel or other major insensitivities will pop up in your future, it’s probably time to give that grudge you’ve been holding a pat on the butt and a bag lunch and send it on its way. Would you recommend it to others?

If you’re into books. It’s a long and tedious—buying books, shelving books. But it’s really rewarding. … I don’t think printed books are on their way out. I think a lot of demand has slowed because of e-books and Kindle, but the demand is still there for the printed word.

When did you first buy the Book Gallery?

Back in the early ’90s, Bruce Springsteen released a very cool tune that we liked at the X. It was a total condemnation of cable TV called “57 Channels,” as in “57 channels and nothin’ on.”

Oh man, is that song outdated.

Because over the last 20 years, television has gone from being really lean on decent programming to being really loaded with all kinds of fab stuff. This transformation has been dramatic, amazingly so, to the point where I now, with rare exceptions, prefer watching my fave television shows instead of going to a movie. There are two main reason for this. (1) Modern television series, especially those on AMC, FX, HBO, and Showtime, are absolutely kickin’ ass. (2) The movies are sucking Chees Whiz through a straw.

All these great series that are now flourishing on the idiot box! On AMC, you’ve got Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Killing, and The Walking Dead. On FX there are Sons of Anarchy and The Americans. On HBO, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk EmNEWS

On Showtime, there’s Homeland, which I’ve heard from many is just so freaking crazy good that it will make your head explode. If I left out your favorite series, sorry. There’s too many for me to remember! But the new reality is not that there are 57 channels, and you’ve gotta look hard to find something halfway decent. The new reality is that you’ve got to pick your series carefully, because there’s not enough time to watch all the good ones, unless you want to become a completely loathsome lumpy mottled couch spud.

I recently submitted. I ordered HBO. I did so for one reason—season 3 of Game of Thrones, which began its 10-show run on March 31.

Now, this may not seem like a big deal, because really, it’s not. My brother, who’s as much a psycho for GOT as me, was puzzled. Why do I not already have HBO, he asked?

People like to hold the book in their hand and have the history of the book in their hand instead of reading it off a teleprompter.

And you kept it until when?

Oh, it’s wonderful. The history of the books is fascinating—where they come from, what they’re about. I mostly like books that change the world—Uncle Tom’s Cabin, 1984, books like that.

The Book Gallery in Sparks, a used book store, is a Rail City fixture that has changed ownership several times. Its longest-tenured owner, Joe Chiappetto, has bought back the store after spending several years traveling and trying other lines of work, including running boat rentals at the Sparks marina (“Adventurer,” June 21, 2012).
