his year is the 21st birthday of Artown and Rollin’ on the River. And we’ve revamped ROTR. It’s still the Reno News & Review’s signature summer concert series, but, now more than ever, ROTR is a celebration of our community and the music that moves it. That’s thanks in large part to our readers, who cast votes for their favorite local acts.

The concert lineup this year spans a wide breadth of genres—from funk to blues to country. Bryan Akerley talked with Mark Sexton’s band, the Sextones. They’re our first headliner on July 1. Kenny Bissett sat down with the Jelly Bread, whose members have been on the road a lot over the last few years, bringing their brand of funk-meets-rock to fans outside the Truckee Meadows. Jelly Bread’s performance is set for July 8. I talked with longtime local favorite Guitar Woody & Boilers, who will be performing at ROTR with their lead singer Melanie Perl on July 15.

Music writer Kent Irwin talked with Spike McGuire about his lifelong love affair with folk music songwriting.

McGuire will take the stage on July 22. I actually had to text with our final headliner, Leroy Virgil of the country band Hellbound Glory. Virgil has been on tour in Norway, but he’s looking forward to being back in time take the stage on July 29.

She talked with a local fashion designer who will be featured in the upcoming Reno Fashion Show. he Sextones are quite aware that they do things differently. They’ve been working on an album for almost a year. They don’t churn out a song every week. They take their time with the recording process. They geek out over compression ratios.

According to Mark Sexton (vocals, guitar), songs write themselves—then rewrite themselves, and are tweaked during a live performance.

“By the time we record an album, we’re on version 13 of the same song or more,” Sexton said.

Even their sound can’t be placed in a box or categorized easily.

“We started as adult-contemporary, barefoot-acoustic ska—transitioned into reggae,” Alex Korostinsky (bass) half-joked. “Then we had a pretty solid neo-soul phase, which I think was one foot in the right direction as far as what we really, truly like.”

It’s not an identity crisis, just constant evolution—not unlike the artists The Sextones idolize, including John Mayer and Radiohead.

“It’s been an interesting journey, trying to figure out what we truly do, deep down,” Sexton said.

Sexton and Korostinsky had a class together junior year of high school. They sat next to each other and were surprised to learn that they shared a common taste in music.

“We had cool dads,” Korostinsky said.

“We both realized that we grew up with the same Steely Dan songs.”

The same classic albums were staples in their dads’ collections. It was something the two bonded over, something that put them on the same artistic page. Sexton wrote songs and Korostinsky recorded them—playing most background instruments himself—in his own makeshift bedroom studio. When Sexton won a songwriting competition and the opportunity to record in a real studio, the pair realized they needed a drummer.

“The most legit guy at school was Dan Weiss,” Korostinsky said. Weiss was playing in a pop-punk band at the time, but that didn’t stop the duo from recruiting him.

than to tour. Any time they had off from school, they seized the opportunity.

“We had a gig ever weekend for years, anything we could get,” Korostinsky recalled.

“Those were the years of just learning what being in a band was like.”

The Sextones have since added member Ryan Taylor on keyboards and are playing with a live horn section on a few tour stops this summer, including their Artown show.

While they love the instant satisfaction of putting on an amazing show, their hearts are in the studio with the album, and it might almost be on that 13th version.

“We’re taking more of a classic approach,” Korostinsky said. He and the band are getting more into a rock ’n’ roll style, and while the echoes of past evolutions still remain, this is the next step in their progression.

“We just know that we’re only gonna be happy if we change and shake things up every once in awhile,” Sexton said. “That’s the only way to be a healthy artist, is to always push yourself to something new, outside of your comfort zone.”

But they aren’t rushing the process or overly concerned with genre.

“Just great songs,” Sexton said of the album’s end goal. They dissect songs they think are great, putting them under a microscope and studying that special “something” that makes these songs transcendent. It sounds like an ambitious feat, but if anyone is up to the task, it’s these guys.

Throughout the overlong processes of writing, performing, adjusting and recording these songs, what they’re really after is they’re own classic album. Something nostalgic—they want the album to be the kind that would belong in their dads’ record collections, the kind they would’ve grown up listening to.

Sexton and Korostinsky laughed at themselves, at how far down the musical rabbit hole they’d fallen.

“Just thought of a crazy horror movie plot,” Sexton joked. “Like The Shining, where we’ve been working on this album. We finally release it, and it’s just this weird white noise the whole time and nothing else. ‘Well, they went insane.’” Ω

After an extensive nationwide tour for their 2015 record, the members of Jelly Bread have refocused their priorities and added bassist Errick Lewis to their roster. Lewis—who was Erykah Badu’s musical director for three years and has worked with a variety of musical giants including Stevie Wonder, Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Snoop Dogg and Wu-Tang Clan—is a formidable addition to Jelly Bread’s sound and style.

“I think with me being involved, it’s going to change a lot of the dynamics in this band,” Lewis said. “Production is what I do … I know I can bring something to the table.”

“Errick is awesome,” Berry said. “It’s nice to have a Grammy nominated producer playing bass with you, if you know what I mean.”

Lewis recently moved from Portland to Reno to join Jelly Bread on their 2016 summer tour as a full-time band member. During his first time playing to a live audience with Jelly Bread, Lewis wowed the crowd gathered in Victorian Square with sweetly funky bass solos.

“Errick is new with us, so we’ve been rehearsing a lot,” Berry said. “We’ve been talking about just taking five days and holing up somewhere and working on new stuff, because it’s hard to write and record new stuff when we’re gigging so much. Last year, we put almost 20 thousand miles on the road. This summer

we’re staying Colorado West and all the festivals we’ve got lined up for the summer.”

Lewis is not the only top-tier musician to be drawn into Jelly Bread’s sticky sweet lineup. Lead guitarist Sean Lehe told a similar story about leaving other musical pursuits to join Jelly Bread nearly a year ago.

“I had already given my notice to the band that I was working for that I wasn’t going to go on the road,” Lehe said. “I wanted to do my own thing because I haven’t in so long, and then Dave called me up and I was like, ‘Damn it. I like these guys.’ I don’t want a job, but you gotta go with what you like.”

According to Berry, a live album of the current lineup of the band is “in the works,” and the band hopes to record a new studio album sometime later this year.

“Sean and Errick together, they’re both very capable,” Matlock said. “They both have that tastiness that is going to help change and evolve us into a very connected band.”

Jelly Bread is kicking off their Summer festival tour on June 18 at 4 Peaks Music Festival in Bend, Oregon but won’t be back in the Reno area until July 17, when they will be playing in Tahoe City as part of the Commons Beach Music Series. They’ll take the stage at the Wingfield Park Amphitheater for Rollin’ on the River on July 8. Ω

e are Jelly Bread and we’re happy to be home,” guitarist/vocalist Dave Berry announced to the crowd before kicking off the show at the Great Basin Brewing Company in downtown Sparks.

As soon as Jelly Bread broke into their set, nearly everyone in the crowd began moving.

Toes started tapping; heads began bobbing and a few people got out of chairs and to start dancing to the funky blend of musical styles that typify Jelly Bread’s distinctive sound.

“Even though we can really jam out, it’s still about the funk,” said Eric Matlock, Jelly Bread’s keyboard and talk box player. “It’s about good songwriting. It’s about good lyrics … it’s eclectic.”

With styles ranging from twangy roots rock and funk fusion to gospel-inspired harmonies and shrieking church organ and lap steel guitar, Jelly Bread’s soulful sound is invigorating and fresh—but is deeply rooted in American musical tradition.

Since forming Jelly Bread in 2008, founding members Berry and Cliff Porter, drummer/ vocalist, have witnessed vast changes in not only the band’s lineup, but in their development as songwriters and musicians. Jelly Bread’s 2015 album, Here, There and Everywhere was “more of a collaboration,” said Berry. “The last few albums were a lot of my own stuff.

he members of Guitar Woody & the Boilers are a tight knit group. Guitarist Woody Soules, bassist Bob McNamara, saxophonist Jon Anderson, and keyboard player Leroy Palinsky have been playing together since the band’s inception in 1991. Back then, they delivered their mix of blues, R&B, soul and jazz under the name Guitar Woody & the Fly By Night Band.

“We used to call ourselves the longest name on the marquee in Northern Nevada,” said McNamara. “Yeah, Guitar Woody & the Fly by Night Band featuring Michele Lundeen the Queen of Steam. Put that on your marquee.”

Blues vocalist Michele Lundeen was the band’s frontwoman for many years. She got her nickname—The Queen of Steam—from then KTHX radio personality Bruce Van Dyke, who writes RN&R’s Notes from the neon Babylon column.

The band took the stage at Rollin’ on the River for the first time in 1999, just a year after the release of their first album—Live Steam. When Lundeen moved to San Diego a few years later, the Fly By Night Band became the Boilers, and Soules took over as the lead vocalist.

Lundeen’s departure was a blow for the band, but they worked hard to stick together—through good times and

bad. Their solidarity became more important than ever in 2011, when Soules was diagnosed with throat cancer.

“I had radiation, and my larynx is toast, as far as singing,” Soules said. “I lost my ability to sing. I can sing quietly in the shower, but I can’t belt it out like I used to on stage.”

It was a particularly tough time, but—even without a vocalist—the band never considered calling it quits.

“I never thought that the band was broke up,” said Anderson. “It never occurred to me. As long as [Woody] was alive, I thought the band was still going.”

“What really gets me, gets into my heart, is the band stuck with me allowed me to find an alternate,” Soules said.

“And, of course, immediately I thought of Melanie. And it’s been that way ever since.”

Soules and his bandmates had known Melanie Perl, then Melanie Hammond, since she was just a girl. Perl had been singing in her father’s band, the Rick Hammond Blues Band, for several years before Soules was diagnosed with cancer.

While he was still healing from treatment, he would occasionally go to see her perform.

“He always had this one song that he wanted to hear me sing—just one song, and it was ‘Tell Mama’ by Etta James,” Perl recalled.

After a performance in November 2012, Soules approached Perl about taking over as the vocalist for Guitar Woody & the Boilers. She jumped at the chance and brought drummer Brock O. Lee with her when she left her father’s band. For Lee, who’d been playing in different Northern Nevada bands for several decades, the opportunity to join Guitar Woody & the Boilers was a longtime dream.

“For what it’s worth, for years, I always thought that these guys were the best band in town, and always just thought, ‘Man, I would love to be in that band,’” Lee said. “I just want to say that I’m so proud to be in this band, and I’m not bullshitting. For years, I just always thought, ‘If I could be in a band with these guys and learn to play like these guys.’”

2016 will mark Perl and Lee’s second time taking the Wingfield Park stage with Guitar Woody & The Boilers and the eighth time the band has played Rollin’ on the River. But this year is special for them. It’s their first time headlining the event, and the bandmates agree that it’s a welcome opportunity to celebrate both their friendship and Soules’ good health.

“I think I have a bit more youthful life,” Soules said. “I still like to play my guitar—turn it up sometimes, and let it go.” Ω

“I’ve just learned how to do these things out of necessity. No matter what I’m doing, the goal is to put on a show.”

o Spike McGuire, folk music means family, community and friendship. His love of the genre began at an early age. His first concert was John Prine. The first CD he bought with allowallow ance money was Free Wheelin’ by Bob Dylan. Folk music instantly stood out to him. He felt its energy, its honesty, its rawness. Its direct, earnest approach to songwriting left a lasting impact on McGuire, and he remains devoted to the style today.

McGuire considers himself lucky. He was able to sidestep that painful adolescent period, where finding a voice to relate to often meant thumbing through the “alternative rock” section at Barnes & Noble, picking whichever CD had the most badass cover. Instead, he was treated to the deep cuts of folk and rock icons by his parents.

“My mom was a rock journalist back in the ’60s, met everyone, was everywhere,” McGuire recalled.

“She was at the Monterey Pop Festival when Hendrix burned his guitar, was super on the pulse. Listening to my mom’s old records was one of my first musical memories.”

It was McGuire’s dad who took him to see John Prine at the age of 6. As his son grew up, he was ready to brace Spike’s burgeoning rebellious spirit with albums from The Clash and Rancid. As he began to develop a musical style of his own, his father turned him onto yet another influential performer, Todd Snider, who happened to be playing in town, at the Rollin’ On The River festival in Wingfield Park.

“I was so surprised,” McGuire said. “Here was one guy, one guitar, great stories, all these people having a good time in the park.”

McGuire went on to perform at that event—but as a juggler, rather than a songwriter. Now, in 2016, he makes his musical debut at what he considers to be a personal mecca of sorts.

“I think Reno is the greatest city in all space and time,” he said. “As much as I’ve toured around, I’m

really excited to get to play in my favorite city.”

McGuire was able to gain valuable perspective on touring at an early age. At the age of 15, he went on tour with his first circus. In those days, he said, he gained a lot of experience in performing directly to people on the street.

“My dad was on Ringling Bros. and was the entertainment director at Circus Circus for 15 years,” saidMcGuire. “I grew up around all that circus stuff—gave me an appreciation for live performance.”

The circus tour landed McGuire in Chicago, where he attended Columbia College and received a degree in acting. He felt that the schooling would be a good way to hone his chops in the world of performance. The years following university brought a plethora of jobs in the entertainment field—as a marketing director for a theater company, a television stuntman, and a Radio DJ. All along the way, McGuire gained his bearings in the world of entertainment.

“People refer to me as a promoter, but I’m really not,” McGuire admitted. “I’ve just learned how to do these things out of necessity. No matter what I’m doing, the goal is to put on a show.”

One skill in particular that McGuire gained from his job experience was managing people with disparate talents. A prime example is his monthly music event Loud As Folk. Started in 2011 as a songwriters showcase, the event moved to Pignic Pub & Patio in 2014, expanding to include a touring review. Now, in 2016, it’s time to expand again, with a new studio space and plans to start a label.

McGuire feels strongly about building a sense of community around Loud As Folk. He’s done it locally, by bringing food trucks, musicians, artists and crowds to Pignic once a month to hear up-and-coming folk singers. Abroad, he’s built a network of touring musicians, to give the community a wider scope.

“It’s about doing something that’s greater than the sum of its parts,” he said. Ω

here’s more to Hellbound Glory than just its raucous country and roots rock sound. Maybe that’s because— for frontman Leroy Virgil, at least—HBG is something more. It comes across in the often cryptic way he talks about the band he started in Reno more than a decade ago. It’s a bit perplexing.

And talking with Virgil via text message while he was on tour in Norway in late June did little to dispel the mystery.

“My sound is country, rockabilly, blues, bluegrass and metal,” Virgil said. “But it’s not about the sound. It’s about the eternal struggle between the Hellbound and the Glory. I’m always apprehensive to get out there as HBG because I know it ain’t good for my soul, but I gotta make a living.”

The last time the RN&R caught up with Virgil, his band was touring the U.S. with fellow country outfit Supersuckers. That was in 2013, shortly after HBG had concluded a three-month-long tour opening for Kid Rock. The band was becoming popular with a national audience, but Virgil told reporter Laura Davis that he missed the Biggest Little City and was looking forward to an upcoming show at the Knitting Factory.

“I just want people to know I love Reno, and I miss it, even my enemies,” Virgil told Davis in a phone interview.

Davis didn’t report any mention of eternal struggles from her conversation with Virgil, but something was brewing. A year after the homecoming show at the Knit—and just months after the release of an EP LV—the country music news website called LV Saving Country Music reported a post from Hellbound Glory’s Facebook page that invited fans to “Witness The Death of Hellbound Glory” during a concert at the Buckhorn Lodge in Pioneer, California on Oct. 31, 2014.

When asked about the event during this most recent interview, Virgil replied, “I tried to kill off the Hellbound Glory on Halloween 2014, but the spirit keeps coming back to haunt me. I tried to kill it off in a ritual sacrifice.”

After the 2014 show, Virgil spent some time touring under his given name, Leon Virgil Bowers. However, it seems he was telling the truth about the spirit haunting him, because less than a year had passed before he began playing shows under the Hellbound Glory name again. And in September 2015, he announced the release of a new HBG song called “College Girls.” But—despite the fact that he’s got gigs booked as far out as October 2016—Virgil insisted that he doesn’t consider himself a member of Hellbound Glory anymore.

“It’s its own thing, and I’m just the biggest fan, and I pay tribute when the money’s right, or if the show is in Reno,” he said. “Everyone who’s ever been a part of it still loves the band. It’s just too much to live with.”

Determining the truth behind Virgil’s relationship with the band he founded is made all the more difficult by his penchant for ambiguous language. Perhaps it’s just his sense of humor. On the other hand, maybe it’s not. If lyrics like “Why take the pain when I can take pain pills?” or “I’ve been out on a bender since I can’t remember” are in any way autobiographical, then perhaps HBG really is too much to live with. Either way, Virgil won’t point to a specific incident that led to his decision to take a step back from Hellbound Glory.

“HBG has been off the rails since the song and band name came to me in a dream a week before I moved to Reno full time in 2003,” he said. “There have been countless signs and close calls that should have made me quit, but it was business that made me decide to step away from it. Glad I did too. Now it’ll never die.”

For now, HBG is very much alive. And, according to Virgil, Reno fans can expect a true-to-form, rowdy experience during his Rollin’ on the River performance. Ω

The Umpires is a new band on the Reno music scene.

The group made its debut at Shea’s Tavern in April and has since taken its rocksteady, ska sound to venues across town, including Pignic Pub & Patio and The Loving Cup. The band may be new, but the members are established musicians who’ve played in a variety of favorite local outfits over the last few decades. Drummer Dan Weiss, bassist Mike Mayhall and guitarist Ryan Hall are all former members of Reno’s much beloved Keyser Soze.

Fans might also remember Hall from the avante-garde jazz metal band Cranium that hit the Reno music scene in the mid ’90s and kept audiences entertained into the mid-2000s.

The Umpires will be the first opening act of the 2016 Rollin’ on the River concert series on July 1. Weiss is actually the drummer for The Sextones, who are the headliners that evening. The horn section that will be playing with the Umpires will be playing with The Sextones as well.

The several members of Rigorous Proof have been playing together since middle school. The band’s first EP Songs from East 8th Street was released in 2011, followed by an LP called Perspectives in 2015. The group is currently working on a second LP to be released this fall.

Rigorous Proof’s thoughtful, often witty lyrics combine well with the band’s solid post-modern-meetsalternative rock instrumentation, calling to mind the best of genres ranging from indie to classic rock.

Rigorous Proof has opened for national acts like New Politics and Bloc Party, as well as regional favorites like Moondog Matinee and Whitney Myer. Now, the group is preparing to take the stage as the opening act for the July 15 Rollin’ on the River concert.

Bazooka Zoo Bazooka Zoo has played Reno venues since 2010, bringing their constantly evolving blend of psychedelic funk, space rock and chillwave to the Biggest Little City masses. The self-described “space rock collective” Bazooka Zoo started hosting its Groovy Good Time Bash at The Saint late in May. Prior to taking up residency in one of Reno’s newest venues, the group hosted this monthly event at Saint James Infirmary.

According to frontman and founding member Bazooka Zac, the group has spent much of 2016 working on a new record. The band’s lineup is also new this year. The group is excited to perform as the opening act at the Wingfield Park amphitheater on July 8.

“People can expect a space rock performance that’ll bend space and time,” Zac said.

Rigorous Proof

Canyon White Canyon White is a Native Nevadan who’s been bringing her mix of acoustic roots rock, country and soul to fans in Nevada for more than two decades.

She was the winner of the 2008 “Reno’s Got Talent.” contest. In 2015, she took first place for “best local musician” and “best local songwriter” in the RN&R’s Best of Northern Nevada contest. Fans may know White from Acoustic Tuesdays at Carson City’s Living the Good Life Nightclub-Bistro-Lounge, 1480 N. Carson St., Carson City, 841-4663.

White released her third album, Shadow Shine, in 2014.

She’s currently working on her fourth, a best-of album, that she anticipates releasing sometime this fall. She’ll be opening for Spike McGuire at the Wingfield Park Amphitheater on July 22.

Jake Houston & The Royal Flush Jake Houston & The Royal Flush is not a pop country band. Think Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams and George Jones—then factor in the band’s Nevada, high desert roots.

Frontman Jake Houston started playing guitar when he was just a kid—initially focusing on blues and classic rock. In a 2015 interview with RN&R editor Brad Bynum, Houston said he didn’t realize he was a country fan until he heard Brad Paisley’s song “I’m Gonna Miss Her.” 2015 marked the release of Jake Houston & The Royal Flush’s debut album, Carrying the Flame. The band members are currently in the studio working on their second album. Up Yonder is set for release early in the fall.

“It’s more traditional country music,” Houston said.

“We’ve got two covers and, like, eight originals. It’ll be a good record.”

A.V.A. Ballet Theatre’s Vortex

Great Basin Native American Cultural Fair The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony will host a crafts fair and artist demonstration to introduce people to Native American culture in the Great Basin. Western Shoshone Navajo mouth stick painter, Mack Nez Johnson, will demonstrate his mouth painting technique at 11 a.m. A Native American drum and dance exhibition starts at 2 p.m.

The Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe dance company’s hometown is Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Lake Mansion Guided Tours

The Lake Mansion was designed by architect John S. Sturgeon and completed in 1877. It was once the home of Reno founder Myron Lake. Today, the mansion—which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places—is owned and operated by the non-profit group Arts for All Nevada. According to the group, tours of the building include the main floor, which houses family pieces, antiques and an art gallery. Tours will be given every Wednesday and Friday in July at noon and 1 p.m. Each tour lasts between 20 and 30 minutes.

The River & Loralei the Mayfly Book Reading

Local author Lynell Garfield will get dressed up as Loralei the Mayfly to read from her book The Secret Life of Streams. The book and Lynell’s performance will encourage kids to think about their own connecconnec tions to the Truckee River. According to the Artown website, “After the reading, Loralei will lead an activactiv ity with children finding stream insects in the water, learning about which of these elusive and wacky characters live in the Truckee!” Kids will also get the chance to draw the insects they find as a part of an interactive, “art in nature” experience.

Discover Marionettes

According to his website, Bernie Beauchamp first tried puppeteering while a student at Nazareth College.

He’s been entertaining Nevada crowds with his marionette shows for well over a decade now. Beauchamp will be bringing his puppets to the McKinley Arts & Culture Center as a part of Artown this year.

According to the Artown website, “He is sure to delight as well as inform about the construction and the technique that makes his cast of characters shine.”

Nevada History Gallery Guided Tours

The Nevada Historical Society—the state’s oldest cultural institution—is located on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. Guided tours of the society’s Nevada History Gallery will give visitors insight into federal projects in Nevada, from Fort Churchill to the Nevada Test Site. According to the society, tour takers will have the opportunity to “explore the artifacts and customs of Native Americans, early agriculture and mining technology, transportation from walking through Nevada to the first plane in Nevada, and early Las Vegas and slot machines.” After the tours, attendees will be allowed to walk through the galleries again at their leisure.

rik Holland, RN&R cartoonist, finished his studies in Latin American art history in 1991, almost went to law school, then became a plein air painter. “Plein air” means he sets up an easel outdoors and paints the landscape as he’s standing there looking at it. Holland paints high-desert towns, Sierra Nevada vistas and sometimes cityscapes.

He’s been painting out in the field since the early ’90s, when he lived in San Francisco and decided to hone his craft on the city’s wide, busy sidewalks. He has a funny story about the early days.

“Very shortly after I started, in ’92, I painted the A.C.T. Theater, and this woman came out and expressed interest in a painting. …

Because I’m a metalhead and not a classical music guy, when she introduced herself as Rosemary Clooney I didn’t know who she was.”

Clooney paid Holland $200 for two paintings. That was the first sale he made on the streets. He learned shortly after, while telling a friend the story, that Clooney was a wildly famous cabaret and jazz singer beginning in the 1950s.

Fast forward 24 years, and Holland still paints in the wild and on city streets every chance he gets. In general, plein air painters aren’t known for being an incredibly social group. It’s a kind of activity that pairs well with solitude. But Holland, who teaches high school art and is “mayor” of the annual Nada Dada guerilla motel art event, sees it differently.

“I just love getting out into the field and mixing it up with people,” he said. “I always have.” So, when Sierra Arts approached him to ask him to invite some plein air painters to set up their easels and paint while the Reno Aces play the Oklahoma City Dodgers July 16, he welcomed the challenge of finding nine fellow painters for the job: Emma Auriemma McKay, Tony Manfredi, Tracey Oliver, Adeline Callaghan, Dale Slingland, Pan Pantoja, Kathryn Savage, Paula Povilaitis and Monika Johnson.

On game night, the group will expect a few challenges. Plein air painters are typically under some time pressure and prone to a little performance anxiety to begin with. They usually have two or three hours to complete a painting before the light changes, and sometimes, Holland said, a rushed painting simply fails. There’s also the added complication that, well, baseball games aren’t exactly oases of

tranquility. Holland painted at a game earlier in the season to test the process, and said the added task of being an ambassador does require a lot of concentration. People really wanted to stop and chat.

“The fascination of the fans at the ballpark was incredible,” he said. Can he paint and talk at the same time?

“It depends on where I’m at,” he said. “I often can.”

Art’s a hit If, at this point, you think ballparks and artwork go together like peanut butter and sawdust, one person who disagrees with you is Reno Aces President Eric Edelstein. Over the past year, the stadium has amassed a bona fide art collection.

“I’ve had two different experiences that shaped what we were trying to accomplish here,” said Edelstein. The first was when John Hull, a nationally known artist from Charleston, South Carolina, visited town and proposed adding Aces stadium to his list of subjects, which already included fairs, rodeos, and—yes—sporting events.

Edelstein took to his work immediately, and the two became fast friends.

“He painted a number of scenes of the building,” Edelstein said.

“None of them had a baseball in play. He captured the interpersonal relationships at a stadium. … I have one hanging in my office right now.”

Then Edelstein attended a national championship game in El Paso, where two percent of the construction budget for the stadium— Southwest University Park, built in 2014—was allocated for artwork.

“They took that opportunity to create really cool art throughout the whole ballpark,” he said. “It created an entirely new dynamic and an engaging experience that made you want to keep walking. I came back saying, ‘We have to have more art in the ballpark.’”

He contacted Sierra Arts, and now the organization helps find artwork for the ballpark. Among the work that’s been installed there so far are murals by Bryce Chisholm and Erik Burke and wall works in the skyboxes.

Eric Brooks from Sierra Arts said, “We’ll do new local artists every year, hopefully another mural or two every year.” Ω

ey, Reno! What are you wearing? If you’re trying to sum up our collective fashion sense and your census sample comes from the streets or—ahem, certain newsrooms—you might conclude that we are a deeply casual city, in love with sneakers, hoodies and cowboy hats. Heck, I spot people in PJs in the grocery store on the regular. But peek behind the doors of our swankier nightclubs and into the studios of local fashion designers, and you’ll see that, when we clean up, we clean up good.

Twenty-four local and international fashion designers will take the runway July 2 at the Reno Fashion Show to show us how it’s done. RN&R caught up with one of them—Kendal Vaughan, founder of VonRoe Fashion—to find out what it’s like to be the business of making people look great.

Vaughan says she’s addicted to hobbies. She’s not kidding. She’s a hairdresser, makeup artist, blogger, photographer and poet. She also creates garments, undergarments, thigh holster bags, leathers and furs for the “sophisticatedly insane.” Often she starts with vintage garments from thrift shops and re-stitches them into one-of-a-kind outfits.

Describe your style.

VonRoe represents the eclectic maverick, the vixen, if you will, limit-pushing and artistic expression. The point is to expose people’s eccentricities, their oddities—to bring out their true beauty, who they really are, who they want to be as opposed to what people think they should be seen as, for the ones who want to step out of their comfort zone. The idea is to make a point, which is that there’s so much more to capture than what the eye sees at first glance.

What got you started in fashion?

My family’s been telling me that this is what I was going to do since I started walking. My whole life I’ve always imagined what I want to wear and how I want to express myself. All the clothes my grandmother or someone would buy—I had this inability to wear it the way it was. I probably started dedicating myself to it my freshman year of high school. I altered and changed everything.

I never intended on making a fashion line. It was just solely for me. About a year ago I made the decision to make my fashion available to people.

It’s about people being who they want to be. The most popular thing I hear is, “How did you pick this and that and that and have the balls to wear it out? But it looks great.”

What’s your most important goal as a designer?

I get asked so many questions: “Where do you get your style from? Why would you pick that?”

It intrigues people to get to know who I really am.

My biggest goal in this is to show that attitude and what VonRoe is. I want to show the world my style, my fashion, but I want to share with everybody. I want it to blow up, that’s for sure. I realized this is my biggest passion. I want VonRoe to be more than a fashion line, a way to live, a way to be.

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

The most challenging, I would say, is keeping my foot down in the fact that I don’t have limits, I’m not going to have limits. The designs and the vibe and the looks are definitely going to be neckbreaking, not conventional, not what everyone would see as being appropriate. Sometimes I have to stop and sit and tell myself, “Continue with my vision.”

Why do you love clothes?

Oh, God! I love clothes so much! I wrote a really short column expressing that same thing: “Fashion, it’s my life, my massive attraction, stories told by unspoken words, by sewing needles and fabric folds. The patterns are the roads, and the stitches are paths. … Poetry it is, this is vintage passion. It’s everything. It’s fashion.”
