Minimum rage Spring to life Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review. As I sit writing this, the first official day of spring is just a day away—and I couldn’t be more excited. I feel like this winter, especially the last half of it, has been brutal. We needed the snow, for sure, but the roads have been crappy and the skies have been gloomy for what’s seemed like weeks at a time.

I don’t know about you, but I think everyone in the newsroom is itching to get out of town, or at least get out in the sunshine for a while. So, for this week’s feature story, we decided to run a photo essay about Bodie, California, using photos I took there last year. If you’ve not heard of it, it’s a ghost town—one of the nation’s best preserved—just about 135 miles from Reno.

It’s totally worth a visit, but, then again, I’d say that about just any ghost town.

Visiting one is my idea of an ideal day trip.

This week, Special Projects Editor Matt Bieker asked folks to tell him their favorite day trip spots. A few of the places they recommended were ones with which I wasn’t familiar.

For now, I’m happy to hoof it around town when the weather’s good. I’ll get out to a ghost town or two once the snows have melted and the roads aren’t mostly mud. It’s early in the year yet. In fact, a lot of places— Bodie included—aren’t accessible right now. They’re still snowed in. I’m just glad that’s not the case here in the valley.

These lawyers and doctors, businessmen and CEO’s, take a look at how much professional athletes and movie stars make and say, “I should be making that kind of money.”

So their greed gets justified. It’s not that I’m a communist, or a socialist, or that I hate capitalism, but these words are ideals, and are highly charged when used by the tabloid media types to manipulate the uninformed masses.

As you know, we already have a hybrid.

(Bernie was stupid to call himself a socialist.

And Hillary’s biggest mistake was choosing that wimpy wet noodle Tim Kaine for her running mate.) Because we have a minimum wage, we do not have a free market. And if there’s a minimum wage, then why isn’t there a maximum wage? Wait a minute. There is—in professional sports. Things have gotten so out of hand they’ve had to institute “salary caps.” A while back they wanted $10,000,000 just for a new scoreboard in Oakland. And every time they bring it up, it costs another billion dollars for a new stadium, or a new wall. Tell you what, the cost of a man’s labor sure as hell hasn’t gone up much over the years.

Our so-called leaders, in their finite wisdom, have stifled the minimum wage to the point where it is a joke. It is not only useless but likely causing more damage than if we had none at all. And you can’t just double it overnight. It makes more sense to abolish it completely and actually give the free market a try. And meanwhile they give themselves raises every year called COLA. All government employees get it.

Over ten years ago I came upon the public CIA site that gave the skinny on every country in the world, including the good ol’ USA. Guess what they said our biggest problem was? The uneven distribution of wealth. And your choices in Washington just keep making it worse. What is wrong with these people?

Their motto seems to be, “Crown the best, and screw the rest.” Good luck with that,

Official lawbreaking Re “Lawless sheriffs make news” (Upfront, March 14): The sheriffs should be commended for refusing to enforce this unconstitutional, poorly thought out law that conflicts with federal law. They took an oath to defend the Constitution. Courts and legislatures will allow Constitutional rights of many to be violated while they debate issues. The Sheriffs are our first line of defense against this blatant tyranny. Kudos to these sheriffs who defend the Constitution!

The uninformed Nevada public The single largest contributor to media buzz is generated by “political opinion.” It is sad, but, reality.

Instead of just opinion, it would be helpful if politicians could provide the public some education about the public issues they are voting for in their representation of the people.

Nuclear technology has been wrongfully demonized for over 50 years. Nearly all “nuclear issues” were self-inflicted.

Chernobyl was built without a containment structure and being run by unqualified personnel.

Three Mile Island was a faulty valve, since replaced with new gravity functioning valves, such updates never provided to the public.

Fukushima was advised by the contractor to place the plant several miles inland, turned down for economics. It was the very popular, GE boiling water reactors (BWR) supplied by GE, Toshiba and Hitachi.

The reactor didn’t fail from the earthquake. It failed from the tsunami that terminated the spent fuel cooling pools.

Our national laboratories are designing and testing molten salt reactors, operating at much higher temperatures, so that “eventually” they will be capable of burning our current nuclear waste. This

type of research should be studied by our representatives before their political opinion demonizes the Yucca Mountain Application Review.

We can debate whether or not science can accomplish this, but you cannot debate the fact, in the past 30 years, science has produced digital television, hand-held cell phones with internet video, TV access, etc.

Nuclear power has made similar advances, but government and the industry have not promoted these advancements through grassroots public outreach, and the media has not tried to help with such education. Irrespective of which side you attend on global warming, nuclear energy is the largest clean energy source in the United States, producing more carbonfree electricity than all other sources combined. 2017 figures show that nuclear energy generates more than 56 percent of America’s emission-free electricity. Ω

How does the “Organ Harvesting” rumor Work?

Twelve years ago, the cult Falun Gong invented the “organ harvesting” rumor shamelessly.

Twelve years have passed since the so-called “Organ Harvesting Investigation Report

by David”. David Kilgour, David Matas and Gutmann, writers of the cult Falun Gong, published the “New Report” in the name of “independent rights activists”, arguing that 1.5 million “Falun Gong followers were killed by organ harvesting” in China. Gregory Globa, a member of the Ukrainian National Federation of Journalists and an anti-cult expert, rebut this groundless report in an article. The author pointed out that the report was posted on a Russian website for one month and the news was widely disseminated. Regrettably, no sinologist commented on this report and held it in complete disesteem as it was posted.

“Organ harvesting” was nothing but a “virtual product” carefully designed by the Falun Gong rumor factory. It has been consistently and repeatedly hyped by the cult Falun Gong.

In spite of its persistence, how does the rumor work? If the cult itself and its helpers do not dare to or find it difficult to answer this question, I might as well do it.

The “organ harvesting” rumor makes the cult Falun Gong more notorious Falun Gong is notorious. How bad is its reputation? Even insiders loath their brand: the cult leader Li Hongzhi refused to associate his media and the “Shen Yun” performing arts with “Falun Gong” and told his disciples to “keep their relationship confidential”. The emergence of the “organ harvesting” rumor simply worsened the reputation of Falun Gong.

On the one hand, it was not able to provide a bit of valid evidence. On the other hand, all the witnesses, testimonies, pictures, recordings, and data about “organ harvesting” were found fraudulent and full of flaws. They were never taken seriously. Even the US State Department denied the existence of “Sujiatun Concentration Camp” through investigations, not to mention other feedback. In order to tarnish the image of the Chinese government, the cult Falun Gong displayed pictures of “persecution” everywhere they went, polluting people’s audio-visual environment with blood and terror; what’s worse, actors were engaged to serve as “specimen” and perform “organ harvesting demonstration” on the street.

How did it work? Even if being repeated thousands of times, lies were still lies. New Zealand and Australia found no evidence to support the “organ harvesting” accusation. Books produced by the cult Falun Gong, including the “David’s Report”, are rated as extremist propaganda and banned in Russia and some other countries. Doesn’t it simply make the cult even more notorious?

The “organ harvesting” rumor throws the disciples in despair The “organ harvesting” rumor not only repudiated Li Hongzhi’s “doctrines” such as “the Dharmakaya protection theory” and “the Falun protection theory”, but also threw the disciples in despair. On the one hand, disciples with reasonable thinking could tell the immorality, unscrupulousness, shamelessness and rascaldom of Li and the upper class in the Falun Gong group, and felt that they were messing with the wrong leaders and the wrong organization; they chose to sever ties with the cult Falun Gong and returned to humanity and society. On the other hand, those addicts who believed in the “organ harvesting” lies also suffered a huge blow. Imagine why they practiced the Falun Gong. They wanted

the benefits that Li Hongzhi had promised. However, if the “organ harvesting” claim was true, they got nothing. Isn’t it? If they were protected by “Falun” as the cult claimed, how could “organ harvesting” possibly happen? If they were protected by the “dharmakaya” of the cult leader, how could “organ harvesting” possibly happen? If they got unbeaten body through practice of the Falun Gong, how could “organ harvesting” possibly happen? If they had “successfully get a Buddha’s body in consummation”, how could “organ harvesting” possibly happen? How could a great master who owned exceptional functions and magical power as god suffer “organ harvesting” committed by ordinary people? If “organ harvesting” was true, the “magic power” of a master, the “exceptional functions” of the Falun Gong practitioners, the seductive goal of “consummation”, and the progression to “the unbeaten body” would all be lies... In short, everything that the cult leader promised was false. Was there any hope? The answer was no. So, why did they have to practice?

The “organ harvesting” rumor badly discredits the conspirators The cult also got evil associates. The cult Falun Gong was the initiator of the “organ harvesting” rumor, while David Kilgour and David Matas, who wrote Bloody Harvesting, were conspirators. The private deal between the conspirators and the cult Falun Gong remains unknown. Even if they were reputed, their contribution to the “organ harvesting” rumor of the cult Falun Gong has made them infamous. First of all, the Davids became unpopular.

An article titled “Russia Bans Human Rights Lawyer Matas” was published in Winnipeg Free Press, a Canada-based news, on January 3, 2012, reporting that Canadian human rights lawyer David Matas and his “Report about Organ Harvesting of Falun Gong Believers” were denied entry in Russia by the Russian court because the report that he co-authored with David Kilgour contained extremism and were considered as extremist propaganda. Secondly, men of justice accused these two guys of being unjust. Charles Lau, member of a Chinese community in the United States, wrote an open letter to the Davids, accusing them of being unfair in their “Organ Harvesting Report” and urging them to “examine carefully all the facts of Falun Gong’s allegations of organ harvesting cases.” Likewise, Canadian Gran McGeorge published an article in Ottawa Citizen and indicated bluntly that “Unlike the previous report, this ‘Matas-Kilgour Report’ uncritically accepted the judgment and claims of ‘Falun Gong’ and lacks objectivity and justice. Once again, the conspirators were denounced by Ukrainian journalists as “cheap shot”. Gregory Globa, a member of the Ukrainian National Federation of Journalists and a journalist of The Citizen in Dnepropetrovsk, analyzed the “Davids’ Organ Harvesting Report” in his book named “‘The Redberry Tree’ of Falun Gong” and considered it a violation of the principles of news investigations and a cheap shot. The book ridiculed, without reservation, the so-called telephone investigations in the chapter “Inferior Telephone Investigations Become Evidence of Holocaust”.

Judging from the results above, Falun Gong made up and hyped the “organ harvesting” rumor, only to hurt itself. It is easy to invent a rumor, but it is difficult to end it. The cult Falun Gong is likely to be “harvested” by the rumors that it creates.

Any Democrat is better “He’s a racist. He’s a con man. He’s a cheat,” said Michael Cohen, referring to President Trump in his testimony before Congress. Of course he is. He’s also a pathological liar, a misogynist of the first order and a malignant narcissist, to boot.

It’s not like we didn’t already know.

Thankfully, Trump’s house of cards seems to be teetering, although it’s clear his Republican apologists are going to stick with him until the bitter end, more concerned with a primary challenge from Trump’s base than protecting our democracy. History will judge them harshly.

While the chaos continues in D.C. and the Democratic majority in the House proves daily why elections matter, the rest of us can start focusing on the astounding number of quality candidates lining up to challenge Trump and his blind followers who see no evil, even when it’s right in front of them.

Democrats have many good choices this cycle, a refreshing development for voters who are going to have to do more

homework than they’re used to on policy positions, character analysis and relevant experience. The diversity in candidates is exciting and well worth the time.

Nevada chooses its preferred candidate early next year, on Feb. 22. Our deeply flawed caucus process inspires little confidence, but if the early “vote and go” idea is approved, more people will likely participate and make the results more valid. Of course, then it’s not really a caucus is it? But a nongovernment primary is still vastly preferable to the previous ragtag, crowded and chaotic caucuses that disenfranchised anyone not willing or able to participate.

Nevada may not matter as much anyway, since the California primary has been moved up to March 3. Reno may actually benefit by getting a few more visits as candidates appear in Northern California and stop by Washoe County on the way.

At this point, I’m not committed to a candidate, although I’m warming to

Elizabeth Warren’s economic policies, especially the wealth tax and her emphasis on quality, affordable child care. I’m liking what Kamala Harris has to say about repealing corporate tax breaks and giving more to the middle class. And it’s so energizing to hear Jay Inslee say that climate change is his top priority and should be ours as well. I want to hear more from Julian Castro, Pete Buttigieg and Beto O’Rourke before making up my mind. And I’ve not closed the door on Cory Booker, John Hickenlooper or even Joe Biden. Kristen Gillibrand, Amy Klobuchar and Bernie Sanders are not high on my list, but who’s to say that won’t change as the campaign progresses.

There’s plenty of information available on all of these candidates already and much more to come as they are tested by the primary process. Do your own homework, and don’t let endorsements sway you. Figure out what matters most to you and then find the candidate who is going to do something meaningful about it.

My top issues right now are climate change, child care/pre-school education, mental health, gun safety, corporate welfare and income inequality. I also want a candidate with a reputation and history of working well with others to build our nation, not someone who thinks he or she is the only person who can save us. I’m open as to gender and age, but I want to see intelligence, stability and authenticity. An inspiring candidate would also be a welcome antidote to Trump.

There’s one thing I can say for sure, and I think a strong majority of Democrats and non-partisans will agree along with the few rational Republicans who haven’t fallen under Trump’s spell.

Whoever emerges as the Democratic nominee will have my vote. Any and all of them are vastly superior to the immoral, xenophobic simpleton who currently resides in the White House. Ω

Another very bAd rAnking

Gov. Steve Sisolak has put the state behind the Paris climate agreement but has not yet taken a stand on the Green New Deal.

Fifteen Nevada children and teens killed themselves in 2017. That number jumped sharply in 2018, to 27. This information was given to a Nevada Senate committee last week.

Nevada often has poor rankings in an array of quality of life benchmarks.

goP Avoids ChAvez event The annual Cesar Chavez banquet will be held on March 27, and, for the first time in 17 years, it will have a Nevada governor in attendance.

The event will be held in the Tahoe Ballroom of the Grand Sierra Resort, and Gov. Steve Sisolak will give a keynote speech. Since the inception of the event, all Nevada governors until now have been Republicans, but governors Guinn, Gibbons and Sandoval failed to attend during their terms of office.

The GOP reluctance extended down the ballot to other offices, as well. Few Republican officeholders attended. In 2013, GOP political consultant Peter Ernaut said he thought their avoidance was a mistake (“Getting straight,” RN&R, April 4, 2013).

“It certainly is disappointing not to see more Republicans at this important function,” he said. “The key to getting people in your corner is putting in the work, using the elbow grease, and I think most Republicans would be well-served to remember that.”

Ronald Reagan worked hard to bring Latinos into the GOP, saying their values like hard work and religious devotion made them natural Republicans.

“Latinos are Republicans,” Reagan said. “They just don’t know it yet.”

But many leading Republicans have been unable to resist exploiting the immigration issue, defeating Reagan’s hopes and driving this important voting bloc— Latinos make up about a fifth of the vote in Nevada—to the Democrats.

A 1994 anti-migrant ballot measure in California, Proposition 187, was sponsored by Republican Gov. Pete Wilson and then spread to other states. It is famous in political circles as a legendary blunder that alienated Latinos for a generation.

And more recently, Donald Trump has elevated antiimmigrant policies to a level not seen since the 1920s.

In his last book, U.S. Sen. John McCain warned, “Right now, Republicans are on the wrong side of that progress, and if we want to retain our competitiveness in the fastest-growing communities in the country we’ll stop letting the zealots drive the debate, and fix the problems that [give] them their soapbox.”

A PoPulAr PlACe for mining Nevada placed first in the Annual Survey of Mining Companies compiled by the Fraser Institute, a Canadian political organization which was created with tobacco money and is now funded by the Koch brothers. The “Investment Attractiveness” survey this year ranked 83 jurisdictions for “geologic attractiveness for minerals and metals and the extent to which government policies encourage or deter exploration and investment.” Thus, “attractiveness” on this list could mean unattractiveness on environmental concerns.

Placed after Nevada were Western Australia, Saskatchewan, Quebec, Alaska, Chile, Utah, Arizona, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

Energy emphasis Trump war on West saps state efforts on June 1, 2017, donald trump withdrew the United States from the Paris climate agreement.

The action prompted sharp disagreement within the U.S., and some officials resolved not to let Trump settle the matter. Governors and mayors announced they would continue compliance with the agreement and formed the United States Climate Alliance to carry out that policy.

Hundreds of mayors and a growing number of governors signed on. On March 12, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak joined the alliance, making Nevada the 23rd state. Those 23 states account for most of the population of the nation.

This action has not always been welcomed. In Wisconsin, for instance, when Gov. Tony Evers signed up last month, a business lobby group called Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce denounced his action with a prepared statement: “Complying with the Paris climate accord would cost the U.S. economy 2.7 million jobs—440,000 of which are in manufacturing. Since the state’s largest

industry is manufacturing, this will have a devastating impact on Wisconsin.

In addition, electricity rates would go through the roof, making it more expensive to live here and more expensive to run a business.”

Sisolak has not faced that kind of harsh indictment. Some businesses with a stake in climate or energy policy— including businesses that would like to slip away from the NV Energy power monopoly—have praised his action.

“In joining the U.S. Climate Alliance, Gov. Sisolak has set the stage to help usher in a clean energy future here in Nevada, an essential step to ensuring a thriving outdoor industry for future generations,” said Patagonia’s Meghan Wolf.

“Nevada’s leadership in statewide carbon reduction will help spur innovation and allow companies like Caesars to meet its sustainability goals,” said Eric Dominguez of Caesars Entertainment Corp.

If there were businesses or business groups that disagreed with Sisolak, they

chose to stay silent.

Meanwhile, supporters of the Paris agreement want action to implement Sisolak’s pledge. Initially, that means increasing the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) to 50 percent by 2030.

In November, voters approved a ballot measure that requiring that “by calendar year 2030 not less than 50 percent of the total amount of electricity sold by each provider to its retail customers in Nevada comes from renewable energy resources.” So the enactment of implementing statutes is next, and Sisolak has said he will sign it.

At the same time, Sisolak has not committed to the Green New Deal, a Democratic proposal by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts that is intended to deal with both climate change and economic justice issues. Governing, a magazine for policy wonks, has reported that after Democrats in Congress were indifferent to the GND, its supporters “have been turning to states and cities to find support for some of the tenets of a Green New Deal.”

Their first victory has come in Illinois, where the state legislature has enacted a bill that seeks to get the state to 100 percent renewable energy by 2050, an ambitious goal given that the state is at four percent currently. Nevada is currently at about 25 percent.

U.S. Rep Jacky Rosen, who spoke at the Nevada Legislature this week, seems to be one of those congressmembers who is lukewarm on the GND. “We have to do it in a measured way so that as we go forward, whatever we’re changing ... we’ll make sure that we take care of people who might lose jobs or what unintended consequences there are,” she said, adding that she will be working on the issue with Sisolak.

State governments, however, are going to be increasingly limited in what they can do while Trump is in the White House. Aside from his fetish for coal, his new budget is unfriendly both to renewables and to the West. The new Trump budget recommendations released this month attempt to eliminate, for the third time during his term, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which in Nevada provides funding for wildlife habitat, Great Basin National Park, Toiyabe National Forest, historic sites and state and local parks. It’s unlikely Congress will allow the virtual elimination of the

program—it has twice rejected Trump’s recommendation—but its funding could be reduced.

Nevada and other states in the intermountain West are deep into energy research and development. And those efforts have had an impact. EcoWatch recently reported, “Power purchase agreements for wind and solar projects in states like Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas have reportedly ranged between $20 to $30 per megawatthour, well below the cost of natural gas generation—and the technologies are positioned for further cost reductions to continue to be low-cost options even as federal tax incentives change.”

Nearly all nuclear plants are in the east, and the West has been carving out a major renewables effort, which is dependent on federal funding.

The Trump recommendations cut $3.7 billion from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. In addition, there were sweeping cuts to the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and Trump called for eliminating the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy entirely.

Agency—key in climate issues—would cut its budget 31 percent. Trump also recommends a four percent cut for the Interior Department and an 11 percent cut for the Energy Department.

Fortunately for Democrats, some of the Trump recommendations are so outlandish that even congressional Republicans, like Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, have been dissing the Trump energy proposals, with some lawmakers in the GOP treating them less than seriously. Nothing hurts more in legislative politics than irrelevance.

But the existence of those recommendations makes it difficult for state legislatures to plan and to appropriate funding. In Nevada, where the legislature meets for only a hundred days every other year, it complicates things enormously.

This week, the National Security Forum of Northern Nevada will bring retired vice admiral Lee Gunn to speak at a breakfast in Reno on national security and “assured” electrical power, specifically the benefits of clean energy in closing vulnerabilities in the nation’s electrical grid. Even with climate skeptic Trump in the White House, the Pentagon is seen as one agency that is moving aggressively to deal with climate issues. Ω

The bears are back Lake Tahoe black bears The last time we reported on black bears around the Lake Tahoe region, it was in the fall when they were entering a state called “hyperphagia”—and eating everything they could get their paws on in preparation for hibernating through the winter (“Bear in mind,” RN&R, Tahoe, Aug. 30, 2018).

“For now, most of our collared bears are still denning,” said Ashley Sanchez, public information officer for the Nevada Division of Wildlife. “We haven’t seen a whole lot of activity yet—but, you know, it is getting warmer out, so some of them are starting to stick their heads out of their dens.”

When the bears wake, Sanchez said biologists expect they’ll head for lower elevations where more food sources will have begun to grow. But they will pass through—and may hang around—urban areas. And there are standard precautions agencies like NDOW want Tahoe region residents and visitors to observe.

“We’re pretty much just asking people to take the precautions we ask them to take, really, all year long, which is securing their trash,” Sanchez said. “They can do that by getting a bear-resistant garbage container or keeping their trash in a locked shed or garage until the morning of trash pick up.”

NDOW also recommends securing food sources other than trash.

“There’s also the option of an electric fencing, which is a great way to deter bears,” she said. “It gives them enough of a shock that they don’t want to come back.”

haste. The bears will soon wake from their winter slumbers—but how soon?

“I mean, right about now,” Sanchez said. “So, now into the next few weeks, but it’s been pretty quiet so far.”

On the California side of the lake, biologists also expect bears to wake and head for lower elevations in the coming weeks.

According to Lesa Johnston, education and outreach coordinator for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, “That’s typically the drill—what happens in general when the bears are starting to emerge in the warmer temps. ... That’s what we expect; however, we have had some unusual bear activity during the winter.”

Johnston said California biologists have seen a trend where “bears that, historically, were not active are active in the winter.”

“One of our Forest Service biologists from the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit was saying that they had some bears that were apparently active all winter,” Johnston said. “She doesn’t have the data to know exactly how many, but, personally, she said she saw bears all winter.”

In the Tahoe Keys, another biologist reported that a mother bear and her two cubs have breaking into vehicles and garages and getting underneath houses.

“Cabin break ins, break ins of residences are expected,” Johnston said. “It happens every spring. Bears will start just trying to eat anything they can get their paws on.”

In addition to precautions like securing trash and locking doors, Johnston said her agency would like people to be aware of increased wildlife activity in general.

“Take it into consideration that animals are waking up and there’s lots more activity ... so be mindful when you’re in these areas of bears crossing the road, deer crossing the road. And bears will be hungry, looking for food. Ω Learn more about living with black bears here: bit.ly/2MXa6lU.

odie, California is 135 miles from Reno—a short distance, though it takes two and a half hours or more to get there, depending on the weather. It’s 12 miles from the small town of Bridgeport, on Highway 270 through Cottonwood Canyon. The last three miles of road that climb to where Bodie clings to a mountainside at 8,379 feet are unpaved. They’re passable for most vehicles when the roads are dry. But that’s not the case this time of year. As of March 19, the town was still snowed in, with all 13 miles of Highway 270 from Bridgeport closed.

The park is still open, but visitors would have to ski or snowshoe the 13 miles to reach it—a feat of athleticism at that elevation. Some snowmobile in, but even that is a serious task, according to park interpreter Catherine Jones.

“You’d need to be pretty experienced and kind of be familiar with the area—and maybe prepare plans in case something happened,” she said. “It’s a really long way. But

people do that probably more often than skiing or snowshoeing in.”

Most of the few hundred thousand people who will visit Bodie in 2019 will wait until the warmer months, when the roads are clear and more daylight means longer park hours. For now, only the people skiing and snowshoeing around town most days are the park rangers who live there.

A gold mine Bodie was established in 1859—the same year as Virginia City on the historic Comstock Lode. It became a boom town in 1876 after the discovery of a rich vein of gold ore, and in its heyday was home to some 10,000 people.

Jones, whose background is in anthropology and history, knows a ton about Bodie’s history. It’s her job and something she said she’s become deeply invested in during her six years at the park. While she’s not a park ranger—they’re the park’s law enforcement—she wears the same type of uniform and has even

stayed overnight under the starry sky in desolate Bodie. She’s well prepared to answer questions, but there are, of course, a few she gets most often.

Visitors to Bodie will learn that the more than 100 remaining buildings there are maintained in a state of “arrested decay”—meaning they’re kept standing but left, for the most part, as-is. But what does arrested decay mean, and how is it achieved? According to Jones, it means that “whatever kind of maintenance” is needed to keep a building standing, will be done—but in such a way as to try to disguise its newness. The Parks Department uses recreations of historical supplies, like 1800s-style square nails and

glass from Germany made using techniques that yield the same wavy, single-pane windows of the era.

So the buildings are maintained using historically accurate replica materials. But what about their contents? Visitors often wonder if the artifacts of everyday life they contain—like plates on tables— have been staged. According to Jones, the answer is likely, though it was years before Bodie became a state park in 1962.

“That’s an interesting question, and it’s really kind of the number one question—and probably the hardest to answer, too,” Jones said.

“I can’t imagine that there wasn’t ever any staging—and there was one family who owned most of the buildings before it became a state park.

And, actually, Ella Cain, a member of that family, started the museum.”

Surely, Jones said, Cain had some ideas on “preserving things for display and for history and for tourists to be able to see.” She suspects it was Cain who staged many of the houses after the town’s post office closed and most of its residents departed in the early 1940s.

What other nagging questions come from Bodie’s visitors? The other big one concerns the pervasive myth that taking something—any little rock or artifact—from the town will result in bad luck. Superstition aside, it begs the question of how big a problem theft is at Bodie.

“People do take things a lot,” Jones said. “And they’ll hear of this supposed bad luck if you do, and then, sometimes, they send things back, which creates an even bigger problem.”

The problem, according to Jones, is that the Parks Department has no way of knowing if an artifact even came from Bodie, let alone where in the town.

“You wouldn’t go into a museum and start touching artifacts and moving them around and looking at them—but people do, constantly,” Jones said. “They’re bringing things into the museum they find that they think are really interesting—but they need to stay in place because they tell a bigger story there.” Ω This photo was taken looking west from near the saddle of Bodie Bluff, where the mines were located.

ver wished you could take an art class—and then thought, “but i can’t even draw?” artist Dana Childs has some advice: “if you look at something and say, ‘i could never do that,’ don’t think that.

That’s rarely true.” Painting techniques aren’t something you’re born with. They’re something you can learn.

Childs is one of several instructors in the region who offer one-session art workshops.

The model is similar to that of a paint-and-sip session or a drop-by pottery studio. by the time students arrive, the instructor has broken down a medium—often one that may take years to fully master—into a class that just meets once. students often go home with a finished piece, and they learn enough about the medium to decide whether to commit more time and resources to making it a long-term endeavor.

The rn&r talked with three instructors about their onesession workshops. There are a lot more in the region, too.

PainT a PiCTure “From a marketing perspective, it meets people’s needs,” Childs said about the idea of one-session painting classes. “First of all, they don’t want to buy into a series unless they’ve met the teacher.” Childs used to teach English and history to high school and college students. Once, when she was taking an art class herself, it occurred to her that she was better positioned to teach painting skills than the painter teaching the class was.

“I would end up going around and helping teach technique,” she said. “I could think like a teacher.” By now, she’s been teaching one-time workshops in painting techniques for about 20 years.

PieCing iT TogeTher Katie Packham owns Copper Cat Studio in Sparks. In the studio’s upcoming workshops, students will learn to create one item, such as a fused glass trout or a little stuffed fox made from felted wool and wire. Copper Cat’s most popular classes are in mosaics.

“I started teaching through a mosaic supply place, 12, 13 years ago,” Packham said. “I’ve fine tuned it over the years.”

Now, she offers several variations a month, in which students make, for example, a birdbath, a garden stone or a Nevada-shaped ornament.

“In our Mosaic 101 class, you start with the same substrate—what you’re ‘mosaicing’ on, and it’s usually a plaque or a framed mirror,” she explained. And there’s “tons of tessera.” (That’s the glass, tile and other assorted pieces that are fastened to the substrate to make mosaics.)

Except for in a few classes marked “Advanced,” Childs welcomes people of any level. She likes to see students climb the learning curve and paint on their own. “My mantra is: My whole job is to work myself out of a job,” she said. But if you think you

and the same assignment, people begin to develop their own styles pretty much immediately. “Students might be really detailed,” she said. “It might be abstract. They might be creating a picture or a landscape.”

“I tell people that mosaics aren’t rocket science,” Packham said. “But the way you put them together determines whether they stay together and whether they’re aesthetically pleasing.”

She credits the paint-and-sip model with “getting people out there to get creative,” but, she pointed out, “We’re not a sip and craft place. We don’t need alcohol to get you in the right groove.”

She sees making art as an activity that nurtures people. She said that some of her students who are in high-pressure fields, such as nursing, find it an effective way to de-stress.

Packham estimates that 95 percent of her classes are for beginners. And she aims to balance a high level of accessibility with high standards. “I’ve really done my best to gather the cream of the crop as far as instructors,” she said. “They’re pros in their field.”

Raise a glass A lot of the time, college-level art programs focus on artistic and conceptual skills, but don’t teach art marketing skills in much depth.

Jessica Schimpf decided to study at the Maryland Institute College of Art—MICA for short—because she knew that’s where she could learn 3D art techniques and business skills.

“I went for sculpture,” she said.

She also learned the photography, graphics and marketing techniques that she now uses to run her business, Mantra Glass Art. Glass is a labor-intensive, skillintensive medium, and getting started can involve a hefty investment.

Schimpf noticed that in Denver, where she’s from, it could cost about a thousand dollars for enough instruction and supplies just to get your feet wet. She set up her Reno studio so that people can try their hand at glassmaking in just one afternoon, in classes that cost under $100.

Beginners get as much help as they need to complete a project. “Jellyfish and wavy bowls are two of our best sellers,” Schimpf said. “You can’t actually do those projects alone until you’ve had months of practice.” At Mantra, an instructor will take care of some of the more exacting parts of the process, and students will help.

“I work with them,” Schimpf said.

“It’s 50/50 work. It’s accelerated.”

March 15 was Arts Advocacy Day at the Nevada Legislature—an annual event that brings students, teachers and professionals from the state’s arts organizations together to meet with lobbyists and legislators.

Before the Senate and Assembly convened in their respective halls that morning, a group called the Note-Ables performed—playing classic rock tunes like “Stuck in the Middle with You” by Stealers Wheel. The bandmates, who play some 40 gigs a year, are all people with disabilities.

“A big part of their mission as a group is to be advocates for disability awareness—because we tend to think that people with disabilities, people who are homeless, people on the margins of society aren’t creative and don’t have anything to offer to the arts,” said Manal Toppozada, the executive director and founder of Note-Able Music Therapy Services, a nonprofit that sprang up around the performing group.

Since the organization’s members have a stake in issues ranging from health care and disability services to the arts, they’re always aware of what’s going on when the Legislature is in session. Lobbyist Tom Clark, who called arts advocacy the “treasure” among the work he does for industries ranging from renewable energy to mining, said the group’s performance that day was crucial in creating an impression with legislators—and in brightening the mood in the capitol.

“It has been depressing in this building for the last couple of weeks,” Clark said.

“Resignations of majority leaders, a resignation yesterday of another legislator. It’s got this ‘ick’ feeling to it. Today, because of what these guys pulled off, it brought a smile to a lot of people’s faces.”

They’ll remember that, Clark said, when it comes time for making decisions

on arts funding. Arts Advocacy Day is a decades-old tradition. This was the second year it was hosted by Cultural Alliance Nevada (CAN), whose representatives were there alongside nearly 200 other participants, including more than 100 students and their teachers. They chat with legislators and lobbyists about topics ranging from funding for K-12 arts education and private organizations, to how to use the arts to attract big companies like Tesla and Apple.

According to Clark, these companies’ “employees are saying, ‘Where does my daughter go for ballet? Where can I go for an art class? What kinds of classes are going to be offered in my school?’”

The group also promotes the addition of an “A” for arts in models of education, which usually focus on science, technology, engineering and math—the “STEM” approach. CAN Executive Director Tia Flores thinks making the arts a core component of education is crucial.

“It’s how you approach the problem,” she said. “It’s how you approach that project-based learning. And it’s not just focusing on the outcome of it but, you know, that inquisitive, creative mind, that problem solving mind.”

CAN and Clark also advocate for funding for the Nevada Arts Council, a division of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, which works to promote arts in the state. Flores explained that funding for the Arts Council comes from the National Endowment for the Arts and is matched in Nevada’s governor’s budget.

“A big part of the reason we advocate is that art is everywhere—and we have to remind people how it got there. Who was the artist? How did this get built? What is the impact that it’s having on everybody. … Art is everywhere, and we just take it for granted.” Ω

The latest debut offering from the streaming giant sends the likes of Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, Pedro Pascal and Charlie Hunnam into the jungle to rob millions of dollars from the house of a South American cartel drug lord.

Former Special Forces Operative Santiago “Pope” Garcia (Oscar Isaac) has become bored to death as a military advisor to south of the border police making drug busts. During a particularly bloody mission, he overhears a captured dealer divulging the location of a drug lord’s personal home where he keeps all of his money. Pope gets to thinking, and then calls upon some of his former Special Ops buds to pay the kingpin a house call and relieve him of some of his dirty money—the catch being that this mission will be off the books and totally illegal.

After years of military service and nothing to show for it, Pope and his buddies Redfly (Affleck), Ironhead (Hunnam), Ben (Hedlund) and Catfish (Pascal) are looking for a little payback.

The first stage of the mission has the men attempting what is supposed to be a quick, easy theft of the money while most of the family is off to church and the drug lord is left behind. This gives director J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year, All is Lost) an opportunity to present an effectively chilling heist inside a jungle mansion that, of course, doesn’t go exactly to plan.

The next stage has the boys getting into some skirmishes in the jungle and a small village and, again, things aren’t going as easy as Pope proposed in his initial plans. The third stage has the men moving hundreds of pounds of money

towards and eventually through the Andes, first on mules and then on their backs, as they try their darnedest to salvage the mission’s booty.

All three stages are well done if absent of many surprises. Triple Frontier doesn’t rack up points for originality, but it does score with the casting, with all five main leads making solid contributions. They are all good enough to distract you from the fact that the movie itself is almost completely void of originality.

And that’s OK. Sometimes a good action flick with a great cast and some decent firefights is all you need to quench your action-thriller thirst, and, in that sense, Triple Frontier hits the marks.

Also, it’s fun to watch this movie pretending that Affleck’s character is actually a retired Batman who has come upon hard financial times and is forced to sell condos for a living. I admit that this notion was playing in my head, especially in the moments where Redfly (That could be a bat’s nickname!) gets all dark and brooding.

Of the performances, Isaac’s is the most memorable, no big surprise considering he’s easily the best actor in the bunch. Pascal is good as the down-on-his-luck pilot who needs some scratch to offset the legal cost of his latest blunder. Hedlund does some decent comic relief as the angriest and most impatient of the group.

The movie does boast one sequence, a helicopter flight over mountains in danger of crashing due the large quantity of cash dangling from its bottom, that is a truly original moment. Otherwise, Triple Frontier is the sort of film the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger used to turn out. While that’s not high praise, it’s hardly a condemnation. There’s a time and a place for a good junk food movie, and Netflix knows it. Ω

Alita: Battle Angel

The first time I saw the actual character of Alita in previews (played, in motion captures, by Rosa Salazar), I found her super creepy with her big eyes and ghostly smile. After seeing her in 3D IMAX, I have to say, something about adding that third dimension makes her more visually accessible. She really is an impressive special effects feat, blending in just fine with the 100 percent human actors and special effects backdrops. The movie itself is rather absorbing for a while, a decent story about a more than 300-year-old android trying to fit into a dystopian society, along with having the dullest boyfriend in cinematic history (Keean Johnson). The convoluted plot has something to do with her amnesiac-self trying to remember her battle machine origins (interesting) and trying to become a killer roller derby superstar (not so interesting). This is a project that’s been on James Cameron’s plate for what seems like forever. I can’t remember the first time I saw him attached to the project, but I know it was a long time ago. Then, the whole Avatar thing happened, and Cameron the director got lost in Pandora speaking Navi and doing strange things with horse-like creatures. He went from directing Alita to contributing to its screenplay and production only.

Captain Marvel

It looks like somebody forgot to tell Brie Larson to have fun and let loose in Captain Marvel. Her turn as the title character, a.k.a. Carol Danvers, is one laced with lethargy and bizarre line deliveries. Samuel L. Jackson and an orange tabby seem to be in on the notion of being in escapist fare, but Larson is stiffer than Church the cat on the Creed’s front lawn after his unfortunate encounter with a speeding truck. (Say, is my excitement for the upcoming Pet Sematary reboot evident?) A similar problem plagued Larson in Kong: Skull Island. The Academy Award-winning actress seems to be in her wheelhouse when the budget is low, but seems miscast when the title of her movie is synonymous with blockbuster. She gives off a detached vibe, like she just doesn’t want to really be in the movie. It’s odd. Had the movie around her been really good, her seemingly bored disposition might’ve been forgiven, but Captain Marvel is also riddled with awful special effects and some haphazard storytelling. I went in hoping for a badass movie about Captain Marvel but found myself more intrigued by the subplot involving an up and coming, low-ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. agent named Nick Fury, played

by Jackson. Honestly, the de-aged Jackson in this movie, along with a returning Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg), who died in the first Avengers movie, are so good you wish they got their own film.

Greta

Isabelle Huppert goes gonzo bonkers in director Neil Jordan’s latest—a silly, standard psycho stalker cinematic run-through made somewhat fun by Huppert’s commitment to nuttiness and costar Chloe Grace Moretz’s excellence at playing freaked out. Moretz is Frances, a young woman living in New York City with her best friend Erica (Maika Monroe). Frances, still dealing with the loss of her mother, finds somebody’s handbag on the subway and decides to return it to its owner. The owner is Greta (Huppert), a piano playing, solitary French woman who immediately invites Frances into her life, and they develop a fast mother/daughter bond. Greta provides the motherly friendship Frances craves. Erica cries weird about the whole relationship, but Frances persists, even helping Greta adopt a dog, and opting to hang with Greta instead of friends her own age. This is a horror-thriller, so it’s fairly obvious going into the theater that the Greta connection isn’t going to work out for the good. The cards are flipped early in the movie, and

Greta reveals herself as a real kook, and the mother/daughter bonding goes south super-fast, devolving into Greta going into full stalker mode. The plotting is similar to other stalker films like Single White Female and One Hour Photo.

Christopher Landon follows up his somewhat creative original with an overly ambitious sequel that starts off fantastically but gets lost in its second half.

Jessica Rothe returns as Tree, the college student who got stuck in the Groundhog Day murder loop in the original. The sequel starts with Ryan (Phi Vu), the character who walked in on Tree and Carter (Israel Broussard) stuck in a brand new murder loop with a seemingly different baby mask killer. Landon and friends go crazy, establishing a reason for the whole murder loop thing (a quantum physics experiment) and setting up some scenarios that openly acknowledge the plot of Back to the Future 2, featuring doppelgangers and everything. So far so good—but then the plot goes Tree-centric again and becomes about her fixing other elements of her life, leaning hard on emotional stuff rather than the totally clever gimmicks the film presents in the first half. In fact, the movie basically ignores the doppelganger element and drops it completely, becoming just another murder mystery that feels like a bad Scream sequel.

The tale of Toothless, the freaking adorable animated dragon, comes to a close (maybe) with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, the third chapter in what producers are calling a trilogy. If the story continues from this chapter, you won’t get any complaints from me. I think the dragon beat could very entertainingly go on with this franchise. Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), now the chief of his Viking tribe, and dragon buddy Toothless happen upon another Night Fury dragon, this one a female, and Toothless is justifiably smitten. After a first date that involves some hilarious show off dancing, the two hit it off, and Hiccup might find himself staring down a future life without Toothless in it. The movie clocks in at 104 minutes, but it feels more like 60. Director Dean DeBlois, who directed all three Dragon films, gets credit for making the proceedings breezy—and never boring. Thankfully, the great Jonsi of Sigur Ros provides another terrific song for the soundtrack.

Emile Hirsch and John Cusack, two actor’s whose careers have seen better times, star in this dark Western about a religious town that’s visited by the devil. The devil would be Dutch Albert (Cusack), a sleazy gunslinger businessman who arrives in an old frontier town that has outlawed liquor and promptly opens a saloon. The mayhem that follows him has a body count, and the local undertaker, Patrick (Hirsch), starts making a fine profit off of all the kills. Feeling conflicted over the fact that more money for his family also means a lot of people and friends dying, Patrick starts having thoughts about rising up against Dutch, but many will die before Patrick works up the gumption to make a move. Both actors are very good here, with Cusack delivering his best work since his excellent turn in Love & Mercy. He’s played bad guys before, but this guy is really bad, and Cusack seizes the opportunity to let the evil out. Hirsch is decent as the good guy who needs to buck up and do the right thing.

Both actors have been doing duty in subpar movies of late, like John Travolta, Nicolas Cage and Bruce Willis, so it’s been awhile since they’ve done anything of note. Hopefully, their strong turns here will get them back on track (Available for rent on iTunes and Amazon.com during a limited theatrical release).

St. Paddy’s fell on a Sunday this year, so a brunch visit to the recently opened Seven Troughs Speakeasy seemed apropos. An offshoot of Seven Troughs Distilling in Sparks, the decor and craft cocktail menu—featuring house-produced spirits—are intended to evoke the days of Prohibition. Its basement location in an art deco building—formerly home to Reno’s downtown post office—certainly doesn’t hurt.

A Bloody Mary ($8) made with Snowline vodka and house mix was presented in the classic style—complete with celery garnish. It had great flavor and just enough spice. A bees knees cocktail ($9) of Argentum gin, honey lavender syrup and lemon juice was a little sweet, with a refreshing finish. My spirits sampler ($8) included half-ounce tastes of Argentum gin, Old Commissary whiskey, Black Rock rum and Seven Troughs bourbon. The gin was definitely worth sipping on its own, not that it wouldn’t perk up any cocktail. The rum and white whiskey were fine, but the bourbon’s two year cuddle with oak made it star of the lineup.

We shared a plate of roasted chicken wings ($10) in moonshine barbecue sauce, and I was surprised at how crispy they were. The sauce was a little smoky, a little sweet and just a hint boozy. Bonus for being served with chunky bleu cheese dressing and plenty of celery and carrot.

Three folks ordered the corned beef hash special ($11), a decent plate of meat and potatoes topped with a pair of fried eggs. One asked to have hollandaise poured over the whole thing, which I would call a genius move. The hash itself was fairly salty, but the sauce made a perfect accent— I was lucky enough to get more than a couple of bites. We agreed it should be permanently added to the menu.

The rest of our order consisted of a jambon beurre sandwich ($9) of thin sliced ham, Gruyere and honey dijon butter, stuffed in a crusty roll made with spent distilling grain and served with a pear vinaigrette salad on the side; a pair of waffles ($6) with bourbon barrel syrup, whiskey whipped cream and a side of thick cut, oven roasted bacon ($4); and a plate of eggs Benedict ($8) constructed with plenty of applewood smoked ham.

As the plates were being served, a mini pitcher of waffle syrup was accidentally upended on the seat of one diner; a fair amount ended up on my sandwich and salad. The owner and his staff were quick to apologize and render assistance, then presented us with a round of complimentary bourbon cask pours (normally $14 each).

It’s straight bourbon from the cask, 124 proof and my idea of heaven. I thanked my sticky friend for her unintended sacrifice.

Of course, I could have asked for a new plate, but I was curious about the syrup/ sandwich combo. The syrup itself was the highlight of my friend’s not-quite-crispy waffles, and its well-developed notes of vanilla and caramel actually kind of worked with the quality ham and cheese. Half of my simple salad had a light notion of pear and vinegar, the other half was not something I’d recommend. My friend’s Benedict was really good, and I’ll take that ham over Canadian bacon any day.

Despite the momentary misadventure, we enjoyed our meals and beverages and headed out—well fortified—to tackle the rest of the holiday. Ω

Multi-instrumentalist and folk musician Bryan Jones is known locally for his collaborative and solo works.

Far-out reflections Buffalo Moses Bryan Jones has been playing music in Reno since 2007. In addition to singing, he’s a multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, organ and banjo, among others.

He’s a former member of the locally renowned Americana band Buster Blue.

Jones came up with the name Buffalo Moses for his solo act only two-and-a-half years ago. It’s based on memories of his grandparents, who raised him.

“My grammy used to say ‘I move slower than Moses,’” Jones said. “And my grandpa always liked things with buffalo.”

Buffalo Moses, he said, just rolled off the tongue—and it would have the pragmatic effect of setting him apart in Google search results in a way that just “Bryan Jones” would not.

While living in Seattle, Jones began working on his second EP, National Mammal Vol. 1. This collection of songs was recorded at Barn Door Studio and was released in September 2018. According to Jones, his songwriting style has had to change since he’s gone solo because there’s less instrumentation to accompany him and an absence horns in his songs.

As a result, his songs became a lot longer, and, he said, his lyrics had to become a lot more important. His songwriting became centered around storytelling.

Jones said a lot of his work is pretty autobiographical and is centered around him talking to his family. He said he’s always looking to be authentic and honest with his lyrics rather than making them poetic for the sake of good songwriting.

Jones said he’s past the point of trying to write songs about “finding himself” and is now more focused on sticking to sincerity and humor.

“It’s so much easier to make everyone else out to be the bad guy, you know?” said Jones. “This sucks, you suck, poor me, this happened to me. Now I feel like I’m the asshole most of the time, and it’s usually funnier that way in my mind. I try to write a lot more with a sense of humor because that reflects a lot more of my personality.”

When it comes to the actual songwriting process, Jones said he’ll sing a song in his head and come up with chords later. His rule of thumb is that if he can’t remember the song a couple days later, then it wasn’t worth remembering in the first place.

Buffalo Moses’s most recent release, a music video for “T. Bodett’s Bedtime Blues,” came out Feb. 25. The video, directed by J. Maxwell Bennett, features Jones as a character reflecting back on different points in his life. His appearance changes throughout the video to reflect the concept.

The footage itself was filmed all over the Pacific Northwest, from under a bridge in downtown Seattle at 1 o’clock in the morning; to the small town of Toppenish, Washington, with a population of about 9,000. The video features everyday life in the American West in a way that’s perfectly paired with Jones’ folk style.

According to Jones, he didn’t aim to evoke a certain feeling with the song or the music video.

“I want everyone to listen to it, but people get different stuff out of [the video],” he said. “Some people were like ‘Man that video was hilarious,’ and other people were like, ‘Wow, that was a really sad video.’ People’s opinions were all over the place.”

Now back in Reno, Jones is looking to play local shows and tour frequently. He’s also working on putting together another musical group in town. Ω

Eye anxiety I’ve been with my boyfriend for four years. I thought I was super happy, but I recently got a crush on a co-worker. Now I’m worried that maybe I’m not totally satisfied in my relationship. If I were truly in love with my boyfriend, why would I be crushing on somebody else? Does this make me more vulnerable to cheating?

You’re in a relationship, not a coma.

That said, your worries are understandable. There’s been a belief, even among some researchers, that crushing on somebody other than one’s partner is the gateway to cheating—as well as lower commitment and lower relationship satisfaction. Obviously, crushy thoughts about, say, a co-worker can lead to a hookup (or more) in a way that matter-of-fact thoughts do not.

However, it turns out that researchers failed to make a distinction between having a crush (an attraction to a person other than one’s partner) and having a high degree of what’s called “attention to alternatives” (basically, eyeballs ever on the prowl for “attractive alternatives” to one’s current partner).

In research by doctoral student Charlene F. Belu and psychologist Lucia F. O’Sullivan, 80 percent of the participants reported having a crush on somebody other than their partner while in a committed relationship. Only a small subset (17 percent) of those participants “reported they would leave their romantic partners for their crush if the opportunity arose,” suggesting that for many, their crushes “are not considered true viable alternative partners.”

The researchers found people’s crushes to be “of relatively long duration, although not as long as the length of” a person’s “current romantic relationship.” This “duration ... suggests that one’s crush endures in parallel to one’s primary relationship.” They even speculate that having a crush may even help sustain a relationship, by (mentally) “providing some variety to help cope with monotony” that’s a natural part of long-term relationships but “without the risks inherent to infidelity.”

So, getting back to you, as long as your relationship’s satisfying and the only sex vacations you take with your crush are in your mind, you’re probably OK.

Who’ll stop the reign?

Out of nowhere, a male friend started criticizing me, telling me that I need to change careers to make more money. He does have a successful business (started with seed money from his extremely wealthy family). But I didn’t ask for his advice, and besides, I love my job, and I’m working on what I need to do to move forward. So I ended up snapping at him. He got mad and insisted that he just wants the best for me.

To understand your friend’s spontaneous outburst of unsolicited advice, consider that human communication is strategic—just like that of our Earth-dwelling colleagues, from apes to insects. Honeybees, for example, do a little dance to tell their fellow bees where the nectar is—they don’t just go all twerky for no reason.

Back here in Humanland, evolutionary scientists Vladas Griskevicius and Douglas Kenrick find that seven “deep-seated evolutionary motives”—emerging from survival and mating challenges our ancestors faced—“continue to influence much modern behavior.”

These evolved motivations still driving us today are 1) evading physical harm, 2) avoiding disease, 3) making friends, 4) acquiring a mate, 5) keeping that mate, 6) caring for family, and—ding-dingding!—7) attaining status.

Yes, status. There’s a good chance that a dispenser of unsolicited advice has the best of intentions—like “I just want to help you ... uh ... help you (and others who hear about my help) think more highly of me!” He then becomes the expert, the career seer, the swami of success. But whatever this guy’s motive, you have no obligation to donate your attention to his cause.

The best time to set boundaries is before they’re needed. Or needed again. Gently inform your friend that you truly appreciate his desire to help but the only advice that works for you is the solicited kind.Ω

How did you learn about this play?

I just season-auditioned for GLM. I didn’t really go in with any expectation of what the plays were going to be. But then I got a callback for this play and immediately ordered the script, because I was like, “Oh, my gosh, it’s a recent play. It’s about women. I’m interested.”

Which character do you play?

I play #13. She’s, like, the stoner, wacky, weird, try-to-be-funny-but-isn’t-reallythat-funny one.

So, you’ve been a teenager pretty recently. How well do you think this play represents teenage life?

Ella Santos, 20, plays one of nine high school soccer players in The Wolves, a play by Sarah DeLappe, who grew up in Reno. It opened in New York in 2016 and earned DeLappe an American Playwriting Foundation award, an Obie Award, a Pulitzer Prize nomination and countless reviews praising her sharp, realistic portrayal of female adolescence. Santos is working on an associate’s degree and plans to go into social work and creative writing. She’s performed locally in Bare: A Pop Opera, staged in a former Gap store, and Sierra School for Performing Arts productions, including Fiddler on the Roof and Cinderella. us how soccer players warm up, certain stretches that they do, certain warm ups, just all of the techniques, how to run with the ball, stuff like that, taught us to at least look like we know what we’re doing.

This play looks physically demanding to perform, with all those soccer drills. How did you and the other actors prepare for your roles? Were you already soccer players?

It’s kind of funny, because none of us are soccer players. I think all of us are in the situation where we played in elementary school and that was about it. Actually, the very first rehearsals that we had, we met at the Reno Sportsdome and played soccer together. ... That was our first time meeting each other. ... We’re all a bunch of theater kids trying to kick a ball around. It was really entertaining.

How did you learn the drills?

We had two sports coaches. They both came in when we were at the Sportsdome and then a couple of times when we were at GLM and just taught

Oh, my god! It’s ridiculous. Every single girl in this play is a stereotype. Every single girl is a girl that I knew. It’s really weird—#13 is like 14-year-old me. It’s crazy the parallels. It’s all of those moody emotions, but also the reality. ... They all have backstories.

They have siblings or whatever. My brother’s a pot dealer in the play.

Those are things that normal teenagers deal with. It’s not normally shown in theater, but it’s very real. ... In the very first scene ... two or three girls are having a conversation about a tampon, and the rest of us are talking about the Khmer Rouge. So, we just start off like, OK, genocide—period.

I don’t think it gets more teenage girl than that.

Do you remember how you reacted when you first read that scene?

Honestly, I was like, “What the heck?” ... In the dressing room, all the time when we’re talking, it sounds like the conversations we’re having on stage. It’s the same thing. Ω

Out of control sentencing So the case of Tennille Whitaker is a bit of a horror, but not for her crime. You may have read about her case. She was the teacher in Wells who had sex with a couple of 17-year-old boys who were students in the school, and she got busted. The charge was sexual misconduct with a student.

Not sexual assault, mind you, but sexual misconduct. And Judge Nancy Porter in Elko just gave her 20 years in The Joint.

Excuse me? Did you say 20 years? As in 20 bleeping years?

Excuse the spray of coffee I just spit out all over my eggs.

Look, I’m not insensitive to the reality that it must have been a complex and emotionally turbo-charged case. After all, we are talking about big bad sex. And I realize that a crime was indeed committed, and that shoudn’t be ignored (but then again, it’s interesting that Nevada

is one of the few states where the age of sexual consent is 16).

But I just want to tap into my ancient, well-entrenched, liberal boomer mindset here to put forth the proposition that if Whitaker had been shamed in her community (which she was, totally and thoroughly) and then lost her precious teaching job (I mean, all those bennies and perks just flew away forever), and then maybe sentenced to a token stretch of 4-6 months at the county prison farm, OK, fine. That would seem to me to be a perfectly adequate punishment while sending a clear message to the rest of the faculty that such a crime is absolutely not acceptable.

But 20 years? Twenty years in some hellhole prison? And, yes, of course I’m bringing this up because the Manafort Comparison dangles obscenely in space for all to acknowledge, ponder and com-

pare. Twenty years? You’ve got to be kidding. I’m going to dare to assume that every woman who’s ever had a man rape her at knifepoint only to see him get off with a six-month slap on the wrist, isn’t gonna be particularly impressed. And how about every girl who’s ever been molested by some “pillar of the community,” only to see Mr. Pillar get off with some bullshit community service as “punishment?” Impressed by Whitaker’s extreme sentence?

Again, I’m guessing no.

• So, OK. We’re doing lots of investigating. We’re doing lots of document collecting. We’re doing lots of researching. All well and good, all very necessary. But goddammit, when are we gonna start doing some busting? And I mean busting of people whose last name begins with T? Come on, already! Ω
