In jest Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review. As a local journalist, I occasionally come up against assumptions about how my colleagues and I actually perform our jobs, so I thought I’d use this note to walk our readers through a day at the RN&R. Each morning, the editors and I crowd the small parking lot at our office on Margrave Drive with our imported sports cars—Dennis Myers’ Porsche is especially auspicious. We clock in and receive the day’s talking points from the cabal of faceless, liberal overseers who control the news. We also check the Undesirables List for any local figures who might have incurred our wrath by daring to question our reporting.

After a long morning of inventing sources and photoshopping our subjects into compromising situations, we typically order lunch from a chain restaurant so as not to support local businesses who haven’t bought our coverage.

Our afternoons are usually spent glad-handing politicians and CEOs (“Why certainly, Mr. Musk, 8 a.m. would be a splendid tee time”) and carefully crafting narratives to subvert the general civil rights of our readership. Then we burn an American flag before knocking off for the evening—and I always kiss the portrait of Obama that hangs by my desk on the way out.

This is, of course, an exercise in sarcasm. But based on the immediate air of suspicion I’m often treated to when I tell people my job, I have to wonder how many readers might have just had their worst fears about the media “confirmed.” As a local paper, we reporters are as much members of the community as we are observers of it, and we try to operate with its best interests in mind. All I can say is, if the sinister operators of the “Mainstream Media” were orchestrating our coverage— they could probably pay us a little better.

Middle industry As we get into the debate about health care for all, I’d like someone to explain how, if the goal is to reduce health care costs, it can happen with the inclusion of a middle-man (middle-industry) whose sole purpose is to collect and manage the money at a profit?

We already know, based on available data, that overhead costs are significantly higher when private industry manages health care. But don’t just rely on the data, use your common sense. The primary difference between a privatelyrun and a publicly-run system is the CEOs and the profit margins. And removing the middle-industry won’t result in massive job loss since all those folks who are currently doing the real work will belong to the highly-qualified pool of people that will be needed to do the same real work for the new system.

Of course there will be some losses due to not needing so many people to figure out the convoluted system that currently exists. But does anyone really want to fight for maintaining inefficiency?

Afraid of losing your doctor? Do you really think that all those doctors doing the real work today will somehow disappear? They will, of course, be the health care providers in the new system.

But the big noise from the Republicans has been, “The Dems want to raise your taxes!” Of course they will, but it’s because they’re now managing your service at a significantly lower price. And the savings don’t stop there— remember those arguments for capitalism and the free market? If the economists are correct (and sometimes the good ones are), once businesses are no longer burdened with providing insurance to their employees, their costs will go down, which will reduce costs for just about everything we buy.

Not that easy There are easily 36,500 gun related deaths in the US every year (100 a day or ine every 15 minutes). And two of three are suicides, I hear/read. Messy. Someone has to clean all this up. Of course that does not include all the people worldwide who we are bombing the shit out of.

Perhaps we should take a chapter from Soylent Green, and have centers where any who want to end it all can go and experience a bit more fun along the way?

A killer (?) meal, a fine massage, maybe one last o-o-o-orgasm; some good time fun.

Nevada needs net neutrality In December, the Las Vegas Review-Journal editorialized as follows: “It’s been a year since progressives moaned that the Trump administration had killed the internet. It’s certainly a shocker, but it turns out their hysteria was a tad overblown.

As Eric Boehm of Reason.com pointed out this week, last year’s vote by the Federal Communications Commission to end the Obama-era series of internet regulations known as ‘net neutrality’ was met with all manner of doomsday prophecies by liberal activists. The move, they promised, would usher in a ‘rise in evil cable companies slowing consumers’ internet connections or the creation of an online dystopia where only those who can plop down fat stacks of cash to pay for premium connections can have fun.’ … In hindsight, the warnings are almost laughable.”

The Review-Journal is correct that it’s been a year since the Federal Communications Commission, at the behest of Chair Ajit Pai, repealed fair and equal treatment of all consumers on the web. What is not correct about the editorial is that it has been a year since the change took effect.

You see, Chair Pai, after claiming that it was urgent that the internet be turned over to predatory mega-corporations, then dawdled about getting it done.

The repeal vote was Dec. 14, 2017.

The FCC later said it would take effect April 23, 2018.

Still later, that was delayed until June 11.

So by the time the Review-Journal’s editorial was printed on Dec. 20, net neutrality had been null for a whopping 28 weeks. It’s the editorial, not the earlier predictions, that is laughable, and the editorial reflects a lot of similar

claims being made about premature hysteria after less time than a goat pregnancy.

But let’s assume the editorial was correct. It is still a straw man. A year is nothing. And no one predicted doomsday. Some predicted exactly the corporate restraint that unfolded, because none of the telecom firms wanted a fast, negative public reaction that would force Congress and state legislatures to act. Rather, they wanted the new status quo to take effect gradually so that consumers would slowly become accustomed to it. That way, corporate lobbyists will be able to smother with campaign contributions whatever reform efforts come about when the full force of repeal smacks us hard.

The editorial and other such claims are as foolish as, say, liberal complaints by groups like Common Dreams that repeal has not brought all the goodies right wingers had predicted. True, repeal has not spurred investment as Pai and others predicted. But it’s still an early assessment.

The fact remains that state legislatures, including Nevada’s, should continue their work of overruling the federal repeal by adopting statutes that reinstate net neutrality, not because the FCC’s blunder has failed or succeeded but because a democratic net is sound public policy that has been overruled by money. Every legislature that adds its voice to the protection of the internet from money grubbing is needed.

State attorneys general have sued to take back the internet, and California enacted pioneering reinstatement.

Nevada has a Democratic governor and Democratic majorities in both houses. They need to get this done. Ω

Plight of renters faces legislators Nevada is justifiably proud of its femalemajority Legislature, but other states are passing progressive policy initiatives to address the critical needs of their citizens far beyond what is envisioned in our state.

For example, last week, Oregon became the first state in the nation to pass a mandatory rent control measure in response to an out-of-control housing crisis as people flock to the state looking for jobs and a new beginning. Proponents say the tenant protections are needed as people face rent increases of 100 percent or more and are forced to move in with friends, live in their cars, or accept deplorable living conditions on the street. Sound familiar, Reno?

Before you dismiss the idea as unworkable, consider that under the provisions of Senate Bill 608, landlords may not raise the rent more than seven percent a year above the annual change in the consumer price index. Landlords are also prohibited from evicting tenants without a reason once they’ve lived in the building for a year.

Rent control is the best way to counteract

the greedy price-gouging many landlords can’t seem to resist when demand rises. It’s behavior Reno’s renters know all too well.

In Oregon, Democrats hold the majority in both houses and passed the bill largely on party-line votes. Democratic Governor Kate Brown happily signed the legislation which takes effect immediately.

Oregon’s Republicans denounced the bill, predicting that investors will flee the state, taking their development dollars with them, thus creating even less supply to meet the growing demand for housing. Utilizing the Trumpian “blame the Democrats for everything” approach, they accused their colleagues of causing the housing crisis by blocking the expansion of urban growth boundaries and raising the minimum wage.

But Jim Straub from the Oregon Rental Housing Association said the bill protects tenants and does not encourage landlords to take their money and run, indicating “most landlords will be able to adapt and operate within the parameters.”

Other states are also pushing legislation

to address housing costs, as wages at the bottom stagnate and many are forced to pay more than 50 percent of their income to keep a roof over their heads. Besides rent control, solutions include better tenant protections, aid for middle-class home buyers, allowing tiny houses to be built in suitable backyards, and—gasp—new taxes on developers.

In Nevada, where we’ve historically favored landlords over tenants, our legislature is focused on smaller potatoes. Senate Bill 151 will double the time tenants have to protest “lightning” evictions from five to 10 days in response to our state’s nationallyknown practice of speedy evictions.

Washoe Democratic Sen. Julia Ratti, who has taken the lead on affordable housing legislation this session, also introduced an amendment to Senate Bill 103 to specifically authorize rent control measures enacted at the local level after municipal leaders told her they weren’t sure they had the power to implement rent control. Ironically, the bill’s main purpose is to reduce fees for developers who agree to include a few affordable

housing units in their new projects.

Nevada’s realtors and apartment owners howled in protest at Ratti’s amendment, small as it was, an offensive strategy that almost always works in Nevada to forestall real progress. Ordinary citizens could only offer heartbreaking stories of moving into their cars or sleeping on a friend’s couch after being priced out of their housing. Ratti noted there is a 30-year waiting list for federally subsidized housing vouchers and insisted her amendment simply “enables local government to use every tool in the box as needed as part of the solution for affordable housing needs.”

Instead of fighting for a clarifying amendment that is arguably not even needed, Nevada’s legislators should look to solutions offered in other states and provide a heftier toolbox to help their struggling constituents. Ω

Historian James Hulse: “He was a good public servant for many decades.”

Former Nevada attorney general and state supreme court justice Charles Springer of Reno died in Las Vegas on Feb. 19, on the eve of his 91st birthday.

Springer, known advocacy of the rights of workers and women, also served as Washoe County’s first juvenile court master. He was co-author of the Nevada Women’s Legal Guide (1995) and author of Justice for Juveniles (1986).

Born in Reno in 1928, he married fellow University of Nevada student Jacqueline Sirkegian of White Pine County in 1951.

After taking a law degree at 1986 OATH-TAKING Georgetown University, he eventually formed a law firm with two colleagues, the firm’s name inspiring some comment: Springer, McKissick and Hug. In 1961, the firm established an award for graduate students.

Springer was an ally of Gov. Grant Sawyer in the late 1950s and early ’60s. Sawyer appointed him attorney general, where he called for action to protect air and water quality eight years before the first Earth Day. A rupture in his relationship with Sawyer led to the two men facing off in the 1966 Democratic primary when Sawyer sought a third term. Springer lost, then ran as an antiwar candidate for governor in 1970, his campaign fueled by students who gathered the signatures to put him on the ballot. Democratic leaders then repaid his 1966 run, tying his candidacy up in court until just days before the election, when the courts approved his ballot status. too late for him to succeed.

After an unsuccessful run for the state high court, Springer was elected to the court in 1980, serving until 1993 after being reelected twice without opposition.

Springer was sometimes attacked for his defense of unpopular figures. In 1974 while running for the Supreme Court, a newspaper attacked him for serving as a lawyer for a black student threatened with expulsion from the University of Nevada, Reno. His opponent, Gordon Thompson, reprinted the editorial in ads. Toward the end of his Supreme Court tenure, Springer was damaged by his support of a lower court judge accused of ethical transgressions.

On the court, Springer won praise from conservatives when he was the only justice who criticized law enforcement drug war behavior: “Interstate buses are being commandeered in Winnemucca by small posses of lawmen. … In my opinion, these incursive boarding parties should be stopped because they are violative of state and federal constitutional prohibitions against unlawful searches and seizures.”

He pleased liberals in a Harrah’s case with criticism of a state policy of allowing employers to fire workers without cause: “Nevada now becomes the only state in the nation that puts this burden on its employees. ” A memorial for Springer will be held March 16 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Church, 1138 Wright St.

A decade before September 11, author Jack Shaheen wrote, “Today’s Arab stereotype parallels the image of Jews in pre-Nazi Germany, where Jews were painted as dark, shifty-eyed, venal, and threateningly different people. At least 60 Muslims died on September 11, including Abdul Salam Mallahi and Mohamad Salman Hamdani, who died while helping others escape the trade towers. There is now a Salman Hamdani Street in Queens.

September 11 exacerbated already existing anti-Islam sentiment. On that violent day, Reno radio host Rusty Humphries called for more violence, for turning the Middle East into a “sheet of glass,” an overreach so extreme it in effect also called for destruction of Israel.

Other faiths have also been victimized in the fashion of the Sparks Center. On New Year’s Day in 2001, 48 minutes into the new year, the new century and the new millennium, three arsonists—one of them wearing a shirt bearing a cross— torched Temple Emanu-El in Reno.

Hacking can be prosecuted either locally or federally. In the state, computer crimes are covered by Nevada Revised Statutes chapter 205. At the federal level, it is the National Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. There is a section of the NCFAA that also empowers the Secret Service to act. Penalties depend on the nature of the hacking and prior offenses.

In recent days, anti-Islamic incidents have happened in politics. In the West Virginia capitol, Republicans set up an anti-Islam display in the rotunda linking September 11 to U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. The display used a photograph of the World Trade Center in Manhattan as one of the planes struck a tower, and a fireball burst out. That image was placed above a photograph of Rep. Omar, a Democrat.

In a floor speech, House Speaker Roger Hanshaw, a Republican, told his colleagues, “I bluntly struggle with what even to say. We have allowed national level politics to become a cancer on our state ... to invade our chamber in a way that makes me ashamed.” Ω

Amodei, Heller in fed probe U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei and former U.S. senator Dean Heller of Nevada figure in an investigation into whether the two lawmakers improperly influenced the secretary of the interior to block a Connecticut tribal casino that would have competed with an MGM casino, the Washington Post reported on Feb. 22.

“Prosecutors have begun presenting evidence to a grand jury in Washington in their probe of whether former interior secretary Ryan Zinke lied to federal investigators, according to two individuals briefed on the matter,” the Post article said.

The Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes were cleared by the Connecticut Legislature to run a casino in East Windsor, just over the border from a Springfield, Massachusetts casino constructed by MGM Resorts International. The two clubs are separated by 13 miles. But lobbying by MGM slowed federal approval of the tribal casino to a crawl. “The proposal was the subject of intense scrutiny at Interior and the White House during President Trump’s first

months in office,” according to the Post.

Casino.org reported that MGM doubled its lobbying expenses—to $3.8 million in 2017.

Politico previously reported that Heller and Amodei lobbied against federal approval of the Connecticut casino, and Zinke did withhold that approval (“Interior design,” RN&R, Dec. 27, 2018).

“Zinke had multiple conversations last year with Sen. Dean Heller and Rep. Mark Amodei—two Nevada Republicans whose state is a major center of employment for MGM, and who have each tried to impede the tribes’ casino plans,” Nick Juliano reported in Politico one year ago.

Politico further reported that while MGM had no difficulty getting a hearing from federal officials, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut complained that the tribes did: “I think the Department of Interior has been derelict in failing to give approval to the tribes’ request. We asked for a meeting, but they were unresponsive.

They never even responded.” Ω

Both Nevada legislators received money from MGM.

Homelessness can be lethal in areas with serious snow.

Snowbound Helping the homeless in winter Being homeless is tough. Being homeless in Tahoe—where February temperatures dipped as low as minus-13 degrees—can be deadly.

Among the main factors contributing to homelessness in the Lake Tahoe region is job instability. For employees in the resort industry, job stability wavers at the mercy of the weather. “We see a lot of people who have steady income, say, now, because there’s a lot of snow, and it’s winter,” said Nicole Zaborsky with the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless. “Come a month from now or two months from now, their hours are dwindling. And the next summer season job hasn’t kicked in yet either.”

The high cost of living is also a factor.

Zaborsky’s group runs a temporary shelter in South Lake Tahoe, and she said the some of the shelter’s guests are on social security or disability, and are hard-pressed to afford a rental—even a shared one. In South Lake Tahoe, a one-bedroom apartment averages $926.

“Right now, the current median home price for the Lake Tahoe region is $490,500,” wrote Heidi Hill Drum from the Tahoe Prosperity Center in a 2018 blog post. “To buy a house at that price, your income needs to be $103,817. In Tahoe City, you need to make $118,000 and in Incline Village, you’ll need an income of $194,000

a year to buy the median priced home.” She and other housing activists have pointed out this makes local housing largely inaccessible to Tahoe’s recent college graduates, teachers, police officers and fire fighters.

In addition to the Zaborsky coalition, a few other groups are working on aiding Tahoe homeless and those in need of lowincome housing, both short and long term.

A group called Lake Tahoe is United For Action runs the Emergency Warming Shelter, an additional temporary shelter in Truckee, which opens on days when the weather reaches emergency conditions. Last winter, it was open 40 days.

“The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency as well as many other agencies in the region are considering changes or have already begun to implement changes that encourage more moderate to low-income housing in the area,” said TRPA’s Karen Fink in an email. Saint Joseph Community Land Trust has an initiative to help people living in motels transition to permanent housing.

Tahoe Home Connection encourages second homes owners to rent them out as long-term or seasonal workforce housing, and a North Shore group called Mountain Housing Council similarly urges long-term rentals of vacation homes.

While various groups pursue long-term solutions to getting people housed, the short-term need is pressing. On a given night during the summer, said Zaborksy, many people sleep outside on public lands.

In winter, that becomes too dangerous. But the four year old Warm Room only sleeps 28 people, and Truckee’s shelter sleeps 16.

“Before the Warm Room, a large portion of the homeless population would leave the Tahoe Basin because there were no services,” said South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler in an email.

People seeking shelter sometimes contact his department—or sometimes, Barton Memorial Hospital—to ask for help. Uhler doesn’t have exact stats, but he estimates that his office receives two to three such calls a week.

Before the shelter existed, South Lake Tahoe officers would sometimes request aid from churches. “At one time, our Police Association even sponsored helping pay for motel rooms for some homeless/trapped-inthe-basin people,” Uhler said.

“We have been lucky to have no homeless deaths as a result of winter weather exposure this year, or in the eight years I’ve been serving as the chief.” he said. Ω

District e r i f r unde washoe County school District faces more allegations of employee mistreatment by bob Conrad

ore Washoe County School District (WCSD) employees are alleging what they call a retaliatory and hostile environment within the district.

Current and former WCSD personnel have come forward since we first reported on Trina Olsen’s case (“Out of school,” cover story, Sept. 06, 2018).

WCSD was accused of violating state law when it fired Olsen in July. An arbitrator mostly sided with Olsen and found the district’s actions to be overly punitive. The district’s legal counsel, however, said that WCSD stands by its administrators’ actions.

Many of the new complaints about the district are similar to Olsen’s: Employees were put on paid leave, disciplined or were ostracized after they complained about what they said were inappropriate or illegal activities within the school district. Or, the district simply didn’t follow its own procedures, they said.

Hostile work environments One former teacher said she and others were shunned after reporting to higher-ups what they considered an inappropriate relationship between an administrator at Vaughn Middle School and a teacher’s assistant. Jennifer Moats, now retired, said she was interviewed by district officials who assured her the matter was being investigated.

“I knew of inappropriate behavior toward a couple of female staff by [the IT staff],” she reported. “I know for a fact that it was reported to [the principal], and absolutely nothing was done except that the female staff were shunned by our administrator.”

That, combined with what the teacher called low-morale at the school, led her to retire. Others left as well.

“I know of two other colleagues that have taken leave due to stress and lack of administration leadership while others are looking elsewhere or have already transferred elsewhere,” Moats wrote in a letter to the district. “There are staff members, students, and parents who deserve to feel safe and like they are making a difference.

Isn’t that why we are in the education business?”

A former Pine Middle School science teacher said that she was bullied at work and the school district retaliated against her after she went on an extended maternity leave due to pregnancy complications.

Victoria O’Toole, who is still employed with the district, was expecting to be placed in her previous position when she returned to work but instead was offered a half-time position teaching English as a second language.

“I’m not even qualified for that,” she said.

According to O’Toole’s attorney, Pine’s principal “removed her from her position only two months after [she] had taken leave. Consequently, [she] was denied the opportunity to continue teaching science and also was denied full-time wages, instead being forced to accept a half-time position.”

O’Toole said that when she returned to work, she was given a student desk to work from and no place to lock up confidential student documents and her personal items—requirements the school district is supposed to meet, according to an agreement with the teachers’ union.

She made requests for a suitable desk, but it wasn’t until her union representative also complained, months later, that the school provided her with a lockable teacher’s desk.

She said a work area she was provided was later vandalized and said that school officials would not let her view video of the area outside of her room to see who may have committed the act. Her attorney also said that WCSD’s modus operandi is to not respond.

The district’s “general denials do not seem to address the whole pattern of behavior that has been brought to (its) attention,” wrote O’Toole attorney Kenneth Ching.

O’Toole reported numerous concerns while at Pine, and she alleged that the district did not follow proper evaluation procedures.

Documents show that she was rated as effective but was targeted with a “focused assistance plan,” meant for teachers needing improvement.

That was removed from her evaluation after she complained. Ching said that the district’s behavior amounts to an “adverse employment action.” Her case is under consideration by the Nevada Equal Rights Commission.

District Denies its own eviDence Olsen, although a legally mandated arbitration found mostly in her favor, said she too continues to experience what she called intimidating behavior by district leadership.

When she was an assistant principal at Hug High School, Olsen had reported that she was informed that a school administrator gave marijuana back to a student after the cannabis was discovered in a student’s wallet.

Olsen had previously served as a dean of students and is familiar with discipline procedures. She said she was shocked to hear of school employees giving drugs to minors.

Doing so is a gross misdemeanor in Nevada.

Now, however, WCSD Superintendent Traci Davis and Board of Trustees President Katy Simon Holland claim the incident did not happen as first reported by the Reno News & Review and ThisisReno.

They even said that if Olsen kept repeating what she had heard about the marijuana incident, her statements would amount to “defamation.”

“Drugs were never returned to either of these students, and the arbitrator’s decision is even confused over this issue contradicting itself in parts,” Simon Holland and Davis wrote. “The district may have considered lesser discipline for students who may have possessed miniscule amounts of substances that may or may not be drugs, who immediately recognized the problems with their actions, apologized, and after the fact, provided information to law enforcement.

“The issue here is one of discipline for the student, and if any drugs existed, the appropriate administrator turned them over to law enforcement.”

Sources said this characterization is misleading and is missing important facts about the situation. Olsen insisted that Hug’s dean of 12

students admitted under oath, during arbitration, to giving back the student’s marijuana.

The teacher who found the marijuana in the student’s wallet added that it amounted to more than just flakes. A redacted screengrab of the student’s disciplinary documentation showed the student was ultimately suspended for marijuana possession.

“It was a nugget with a recognizable odor,” the teacher said on the condition that I not report the teacher’s name, citing fear of retribution by district officials. “I’m 100 percent sure the dean gave the student back the marijuana—no question,” the teacher said. “Even the union rep was pissed off.”

The student, the teacher explained, even originally boasted about getting the marijuana back and not getting disciplined.

The dean of students was reported to have said that she only gave the weed back because she saw the principal at the time, Ford, had also done it.

Based on this information, Olsen raised the issue with then-Area Superintendent Roger Gonzalez. Gonzalez, Ford’s boss at the time, suggested Olsen file a complaint about the situation to him. Olsen said she reported the incident to him because she had been told that Ford had also given drugs back to a student. She was later chastised by Deputy Superintendent Kristen McNeill.

“It was clear to me you did not follow correct protocols put into place for reporting such incidences,” McNeill admonished. “It was found you had demonstrated poor professional judgment in this matter.”

Olsen was placed on administrative leave for a number of misconduct allegations crafted by her then principal, Ford. No explanation was provided by the WCSD for why Ford, whose conduct was also at issue, was given that role.

“I was dumbfounded,” the teacher said after reading about the misconduct allegations initiated by Ford. “When she had been removed from the Hug High campus, after her disciplinary letters, the teachers and other personnel thought it was because of a testing error.”

“Why was Trina in trouble for the marijuana?” the teacher incredulously asked. “She had nothing to do with that. She was totally wronged. Justice needs to be served.”

Olsen called the situation a Catch-22.

“I was disciplined, in termination, for reporting the marijuana incident,” Olsen said. “The fact that I won that allegation in [arbitration] proved that it was not a false report—meaning, my complaint had merit. Their investigation was all focused on me, not Lauren Ford.”

The district now denies marijuana was given back to the student. The people involved claim otherwise.

Though it was Ford who Olsen complained about, it was also Ford who later moved to fire her with support from the district’s leadership.

overruled that firing, calling it illegal, and ordered Olsen reinstated back to work with back pay and benefits.

employee Discipline follows employee complaint Those who have complained about the district said that retribution, rather than recourse, is a common WCSD response. There are documented instances where a complaint has created a target on the back of the complainant.

“Parents who complain get called ‘problem parents’ behind the scenes,” said one source who is familiar with district operations.

Another special education teacher had a situation similar to Olsen’s. Lynn Kantor was hit with allegations of misconduct when she complained about working after her schoolyear contract ended. Documents show the district’s director of labor relations, Virginia Doran, even tried to continue the discipline process after Kantor was no longer employed by the district.

Kantor was a special education teacher at a middle and elementary school. She said she was unable to file legally mandated Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) properly because software adopted by the school district had recurring issues.

Problems included student information not transferring into the Accelify program, scanned IEPs getting deleted by the software, student data that was inaccessible, error messages occurring after attempting basic functions, Spanish-language forms printing in English, parent contacts not being associated with student names, and others.

Documents show that Kantor filed a number of requests for software support and that the software was riddled with problems.

“Accelify was not able to generate an actual IEP [after the training for the software’s rollout],” she told the district. “The issue is not the teachers, it is the program and scanning system that is causing school sites to be out of compliance.”

Kantor, who worked alongside her husband, said they had to stay past her contracted time with the district during the summer of 2018 to complete the IEPs. She said she was verbally told she would be paid for her time.

Her principal at one of the two schools where she worked praised her performance.

“Mrs. Kantor has successfully increased the capacity of our entire special education department,” the principal wrote. “She is the only case manager in the district that is responsible for upwards of 100 IEPs. She does her job with integrity and despite a year filled with drastic changes in the department, she continues to meet and exceed administrative expectations.”

The district’s tone changed after she filed a complaint wanting to be paid for her summer work. She said she was told by a new principal that there was no money available after having worked the extra hours.

“The principal said that this was our professional responsibility to finish what we were not able to complete because of the software system,” Kantor said. “I disagreed with him regarding our responsibilities and reminded him of his promise to pay us. [He] then made the comment not to make a habit out of working outside of our contract hours.”

Kantor went up the chain of command. Area Superintendent Lauren Ford dismissed Kantor’s complaint on July 23, 2018.

“Based upon all statements, evidence, and documentation, I do not find sufficient evidence to support your claim.” Ford wrote.

The school board of trustees also sided with the district, saying there was no written promise of payment.

Kantor disagreed.

“We feel that a promise of payment was made,” she said. “Relying on that promise and believing it was reasonable that we would be paid $30 per hour per our negotiated agreement with school district, [my husband and I] each worked 27 hours outside of our contract. I’ve been asked to work over my contract every year, but it’s never been in writing. This was the only time they didn’t pay.”

Kantor said she was shocked when, in midAugust, she received a hand-delivered notice informing her that the district was now accusing her of nine allegations of misconduct. The letter was written by the principal who months prior had given her a positive evaluation. Confused, Kantor said she asked the principal what was going on.

“Basically, she admitted to me the matter was out of her hands, and she implied the memo was actually written by Area Superintendent Lauren Ford,” Kantor explained.

The district proceeded with disciplinary actions against her, ordering her to meet with district officials. Kantor said she tried to enlist the support of an attorney for that meeting but had trouble finding one in time.

be accidentally copied to Kantor, said: “She has not responded with a more doable date [to meet]. My thoughts [sic] is that after tomorrow she will tell us she spoke to an attorney and has been advised she does not need to meet with us … just a guess.”

“Wrong guess,” Kantor replied. “I am waiting for a return call from one of several attorneys I have spoke [sic] with.... It is important to me that all of the allegations against me are answered.”

“Good to know …” Doran replied.

“We would prefer to have this done by September 4th.”

Kantor never attended the meeting. Her last day with the school district was Aug. 22, 2018, meaning the district’s attempts to discipline her were being scheduled after she was no longer a WCSD employee.

Kantor said the district would not reimburse her for her time away from her new position in Lyon County to attend the meeting.

Olsen’s Discipline RevisiteD Arbitrator Andrea Dooley dismissed most of the WCSD’s allegations of misconduct against Olsen. She called the district’s actions arbitrary, capricious, retaliatory— and she said that firing Olsen before arbitration was illegal.

The school district originally ginned up 18 allegations of misconduct against Olsen. Only two out of 11 of the complaints were ultimately upheld by Dooley.

One of the two was for sending to Hug High School staff a testing spreadsheet with confidential student information.

“Because the allegations concern testing irregularities and were the basis for the [letter of admonition], they can be considered as part of Ms. Olsen’s job record but should not be the basis for dismissal, as that would violate principles of double jeopardy.” Dooley maintained.

Dooley also noted that Olsen’s supervisor at the time, then-Principal Lauren Ford, “should bear some responsibility for her oversight.”

When asked for comment from the school district about the arbitrator’s decision, spokesperson Megan Downs said that “the district has accepted the arbitrator’s remedy.

There is no further response as the … district is not at liberty to discuss confidential employee matters.”

On other matters, the district declined to comment but provided this statement: “The district follows the law by ensuring all employees receive due process of law. As a part of that due process of law, the district maintains the confidentiality of employee records to avoid employees being tried in public. The public policy of the Nevada Public Records Act and the Nevada Open Meeting Law is that the character, misconduct, or competence of a public employee is not a public issue. In fact, those issues are considered in confidential executive sessions by public entities throughout the State of Nevada. The district will continue to comply with these laws, and as a result, cannot comment any further on personnel matters.”

Olsen was put back to work at Wooster High School in January and given back pay and benefits.

On Feb. 8, she received a new disciplinary letter for the two allegations of misconduct, the two that were upheld by Dooley.

Two underground art scenes welcome everyone, though you may need a password

I

n the last year, two radically different arts and music events have blossomed into existence in Reno. The first, Reno Hivemind, is a collective of electronic music artists, expressive dancers, visual artists and yogis. The other, Speak Easy, features hip hop beat battles, emcees, breakdancing and art installations.

Both events thrive on collaboration and participation, but each one has a decidedly different vibe.

HIvemInd Hivemind takes place once every two months at The Studio Reno, 1085 S. Virginia St. Attendees leave their shoes at the door and enter a space that’s been transformed into an ethereal realm. People drink teas and elixirs around low coffee tables with sectional rugs and fluffy pillows for cozy floor seating.

The action is split between two large classroom spaces. At the last event, acro yogis gently twisted each other into impossible positions, an artist sketched life-sized designs onto the wall with help of 14

a projector and a Bay Area company called LoveTech brought an oscilloscope synth— a beat-making machine that correlates into lasers flashing shapes on a screen.

In another room, a massive DJ booth was set up in front of psychedelic visualizations combining lights and projectors.

Musicians crafted electronic sounds meant to inspire creativity and movement. Throughout the night, a troupe of dancers, The Queens of the Hivemind, performed modern dance choreography in elaborate costumes. The whole event was more in the vein of a colorful circus than a concert.

“We just realized that there was a place in Reno for this type of event,” said Zac Haley, a co-founder and organizer of Reno Hivemind. “We saw the perfect window to set up a collaborative arts night.”

Haley is a multi-instrumentalist, electronic music artist and a visual artist who performs under the name Bazooka Zac. He crafts new songs and beats and animated visualizations for every Hivemind show.

“Melissa [Ennis] and I heard Zac’s music on Instagram, and we just messaged him, ‘Do you ever work with dancers?’” said Erica French. “We sat down for coffee and talked about how to bring more

cohesion and interaction with dance and music.”

“We noticed within our conversations that we were all looking for a space to express our individual artistry,” said Melissa Ennis, one of the dancers in the Queens of the Hivemind. “We realized if that’s what we’re looking for, there must be other people in our community who are also seeking that same thing.”

The project began in January 2018 and was hosted at The Bluebird Nightclub before it moved to The Studio this past January. The group agreed that hosting the event at a yoga studio was reflective of their intention to include “wellness” into the overall perception of Hivemind.

Haley explained that, in the culture of electronic dance music, there is a fork in the road of excessive drug use and partying in opposition to the ostensibly nourishing practices of yoga and movement. He said while Hivemind entertains all perspectives, it tries to pull everyone into a more productive, healthier mindset to experience art.

“We function on Burning Man principles,” said Haley. “We draw heavily from that culture. It’s a very inclusive and radical expression.”

Speak eaSy

The next Speak Easy event is Friday, March 8, at the Potentialist Workshop, 838 E. 2nd St. at 8 p.m.

In juxtaposition to the easy vibes of Hivemind is the grittier, urban feel of Speak Easy, hosted every few months at The Potentialist Workshop, 836 E. Second St. The first thing to know before literally getting in the door is the password—and it’s not posted publicly. Anyone interested in the password has to directly message the Speak Easy Instagram account, @speakeasy775, or they can ask any one of the dozens of artists and performers who will post about the event on Facebook and Instagram.

Once in the doors, the audience is ushered to the performance space in the back. It’s not flashy. The walls are brick, and there are blackout curtains affixed to the windows.

There’s dust in the air kicked up by a pack of partygoers getting down with the 808 bass drum pumping from the speakers. It’s a scene that might harken back to the birth of hip-hop in the ’70s in the South Bronx, lead by cultural originators Kool Herc and Grand Master Flash. It’s an homage to the roots of the genre, or at least that’s the vision of Speak Easy’s founder, Niles Quinn.

Bay Area transplant Quinn is interested in all facets of hip hop, including emceeing, graffiti, turn tables and dancing. He’s been rapping and collaborating in Reno for years, and, like the Hivemind founders, he noticed a lack of local opportunities for what he wanted to see and hear in the music scene.

“All I ever saw was rappers coming from out of town, but there’s no one from this city putting artists on from this city,” said Quinn, “We’re filling the void.”

To create Speak Easy, he reached out to Reno artists of all kinds. In jest, they decided to go with a prohibition-era theme, and it

stuck. Some people still show up in fedoras and flapper costumes, but there’s no enforced dress-code.

What evolved is a grassroots hip-hop spectacle, where local acts like Redfield Clipper and Peavine Prophets spend time before each event dialing in their sets, collaborating with different musicians and producers.

Ruby Barrientos, an artist who has done live drawing at both Hivemind and Speak Easy described her process for her performance art: “I just feel the energy in the space—positive energy from creators creating,” she said.

“It’s not what people see on the regular in Reno. It’s something different that Quinn is bringing to the table—that we all are, as a collective.”

“I think Reno is moldable right now,” said Nate Eng, a beat-maker and producer who goes by Enigma Beats. “It’s changing so fast.

We’re young, and we’re all artists. We’re pretty rooted in the community, doing different things, but, as artists, we can really change the city we live in.”

Eng is a regular performer at Speak Easy, but he also co-founded Hivemind with Bazooka Zac. He said that people have suggested he and his talented friends could consider moving to LA or other, bigger art scenes. They reject that idea. Eng and Quinn believe more in making Reno into the exact scene and the culture they want.

The lineup at Speak Easy changes with every event, usually flowing from live music and emceeing, to beat battles and kinetic breakdancing performances, with DJ sets mixed in. Painters and artists set up their easels on the outskirts of the dance floor. These aren’t typical “rap battles” where rappers diss each other in their rhymes, however. Quinn won’t tolerate hate speech or outright negativity. Every show ends with an open mic cypher.

“It’s an open mic freestyle with heavy improvisation,” said Quinn. “At this next one, we will actually have the live band laying down the grooves.”

R apping it up For audiences, the experiences at Speak Easy and Hivemind are diametrically different.

But, in many ways, the events are the same.

They’re both organized and executed by cohorts of creatives all riffing off of each other’s dynamism. Both events are building momentum through their contagious energy as well, with more attendees expected at each new event.

Zac Haley and Niles Quinn both envision a day when they can take their shows on the road, exposing Reno-based artists to communities beyond the 775. But neither of them envisioning selling-out in the financial sense.

The money these events make at the door is just enough to keep the sound system on, so to speak. Ω

Blaire Zika’s poetry and paintings have served as an outlet to process a lot. But, she said, there were some painful threads woven so deeply into her life she felt like she was on a shame merry-go-round, asking herself, “How am in this same spot again?”

She’s definitely not in that spot today.

Zika began drilling down to find the internal triggers that led to her emotional funks, and a healing journey began. She took up meditation and began doing yoga.

Through a lot of “soul work,” she said, she’s grown into a place of complete selflove. Now, she feels compelled to pass on what she’s gained to others who have been through hurt. She’s teaching a course in April called “Transcending the Illusion.”

The illusion, as she sees it, is separation—separation from love and community, caused by “old narratives” and traumatic experiences. She said staying in the shame of mistakes and mishaps can be a narrative. Or maybe the story is sadness from a loss that we keep revisiting, or the embarrassment of a past mistake that we just can’t shake. It could be a gripping insecurity felt every time we put ourselves out there.

Zika said her upcoming course will introduce attendees to new stories about themselves and help them shed the insecurities and heartaches they feel in the negative corners of their minds that keep them from being their “highest selves.”

“In the space of this class, people can share without judgement,” Zika said.

“When things come up related to their pain, we’ll give it a name. Drill down on it. All the ego things that want to stop us, they’ll get killed in this course. It won’t be an easy course, but will have a shift in 1|

people’s lives. We all just need permission to go there.”

The work in “soul work” will consist of meditation, yoga and spiritual exercises, intended to open participants up to discussing freely. The first week will lay the foundation by teaching participants about being “in flow” and guide them to listen to their inner voices.

“We seek guidance with a higher source, and if we don’t know what that voice is we’ll miss it,” she said. “When we’re in flow, we’ll recognize ego.”

Zika’s own scars come from her husband’s suicide a few years ago, as well as more faded marks left by her upbringing. The “not good enough” baggage is something she said she’s carried for a long time. And while she doesn’t have a degree hanging on her wall, she feels equipped to guide others to a healing place, she said.

Not everyone—this writer included— is big on cosmic and mystical things, but Zika said this course is not just for the big believers in God or “Source,” as Zika calls the higher being. It’s for anyone who has faced darkness, sadness or haunting shadows of negativity and self-doubt.

“The primary goal is to shine a light on our pain, grief and trauma so that we may bring it up out of our shadows and heal it, transcend it and no longer live in a space of suffering,” she said. “The goal is to nurture a loving relationship within ourselves so that we may begin to see that life is always happening for us and not to us, so that when we navigate through difficult moments going forward they don’t consume and control us.” Ω

“When you wake, you’ll be a real boy.”

Mad rush Isabelle Huppert goes gonzo bonkers in director Neil Jordan’s latest—a silly, standard psycho stalker cinematic run-through made somewhat fun by Huppert’s commitment to nuttiness and costar Chloe Grace Moretz’s excellence at playing freaked out.

Moretz is Frances, a young woman living in New York City with her best friend Erica (Maika Monroe). Frances, still dealing with the loss of her mother, finds somebody’s handbag on the subway and decides to return it to its owner.

The owner is Greta, a piano playing, solitary French woman who immediately invites Frances into her life, and they develop a fast mother/ daughter bond. Greta has a daughter of her own, but she lives in Paris, so Frances fills a void. Greta provides the motherly friendship Frances craves.

Erica cries weird about the whole relationship, but Frances persists, even helping Greta adopt a dog, and opting to hang with Greta instead of friends her own age.

This is a horror-thriller, so it’s fairly obvious going into the theater that the Greta connection isn’t going to work out for the good.

The cards are flipped early in the movie, and Greta reveals herself as a real kook, and the mother/daughter bonding goes south super-fast, devolving into Greta going into full stalker mode.

The plotting is similar to other stalker films like Single White Female and One Hour Photo. It’s worth noting that, while it’s like those films, those films were actually quite entertaining, and Greta is often entertaining, as well.

That’s mainly because Huppert, a great actress, commits 100 percent to providing you with a memorable psycho, a cringe-inducing creep who makes your skin crawl. There’s little mystery behind the notion she’s crazy. The movie is really about revealing just how freaking crazy she is, and, as it turns out, she’s way out there.

Jordan gives us a lot of the standard scenarios, like Greta taunting Frances through her mobile

phone, or Greta standing outside the window of Frances’s workplace just staring at her. In the hands of a lessor director, this could just come off as schlocky, but Jordan (The Crying Game, The Butcher Boy) knows a few things about making movies with good cinematography and editing. It’s a solid movie enterprise as far as all the bells and whistles go.

Huppert and Jordan do a serviceable job of making Greta an intimidating, terrifying monster at times. They also allow the movie to go off the rails in a funny and effective way. Ballet dancing, hypodermic needles, a piano and toy boxes all play a part in the insanity, and Huppert embraces the chance to be bad with glee.

While Huppert takes a blissful journey into crazy villain land, Moretz gets a lot of credit for keeping her role grounded in a sort of reality, no matter how nutty the proceedings get. The film works as well as it does because Moretz’s Frances is easy to root for, even when her actions are so dumb.

It doesn’t hurt to have Monroe doing her best work since her presence in the instant horror classic, It Follows. She brings a vim and vigor to her role (the “roommate”) that could easily come off as a stereotype. Erica proves to be a character as memorable as Greta and Frances.

Greta isn’t groundbreaking filmmaking, but it is entertaining and contains enough good scares and creepy moments to give it a pass. Huppert’s Greta isn’t the sort of movie monster that will haunt your dreams, but she will make you uncomfortable in a good way for a couple of hours.

There’s no reason for you to rush out and see it in theaters, unless you are a huge Huppert fan. It’s a movie that will work just fine when you stream it someday looking for some goofy scares. Ω

Alita: Battle Angel

The first time I saw the actual character of Alita in previews (played, in motion captures, by Rosa Salazar), I found her super creepy with her big eyes and ghostly smile. After seeing her in 3D IMAX, I have to say, something about adding that third dimension makes her more visually accessible. She really is an impressive special effects feat, blending in just fine with the 100 percent human actors and special effects backdrops.

The movie itself is rather absorbing for a while, a decent story about a more than 300-year-old android trying to fit into a dystopian society, along with having the dullest boyfriend in cinematic history (Keean Johnson). The convoluted plot has something to do with her amnesiac-self trying to remember her battle machine origins (interesting) and trying to become a killer roller derby superstar (not so interesting). This is a project that’s been on James Cameron’s plate for what seems like forever. I can’t remember the first time I saw him attached to the project, but I know it was a long time ago. Then, the whole Avatar thing happened, and Cameron the director got lost in Pandora speaking Navi and doing strange things with horse-like creatures. He went from directing Alita to contributing to its screenplay and production only.

Cold Pursuit

Cold Pursuit sees Liam Neeson in another tired revenge formula film, this time set in the snowy Rocky Mountains. It allows for some impressive scenery. That’s about the best thing I can say for this one. It’s not a good thing when the best part of a murder mystery is shots of a snow plow cutting through large quantities of white stuff. That, oddly enough, is a beautiful thing to watch and had me wishing this was a documentary about a guy trying to keep a mountain pass clear in the winter rather than another Fargo rip-off. Neeson plays Nels Coxman and, yes, the film contains plenty of jokes about that last name. Nels has just won citizen of the year for keeping the roads clear, just in time for his son Kyle (Michael Richardson) to be killed by a criminally forced heroin overdose. Turns out Kyle interfered in some drug dealings with a major dealer nicknamed Viking (Tom Bateman) and got put in a fatal predicament made to look like an addict’s accident. Nels knows better and seeks out answers. When he starts getting them, he kills off those responsible, one by one, until the path leads to Viking. When he gets there, the plan involves Viking’s young son. (“You took my son’s life. You have a son. He’s going to be taken!”) What follows is a revenge thriller that thinks it’s funny and clever, but it’s not.

Glass

Following one bomb after another during a 15-year stretch, in 2017, M. Night Shyamalan showed us he was still capable of good cinematic things with Split—a showcase for James McAvoy’s multi-persona performance and a creepy little thriller thanks to Shyamalan’s surprisingly deft direction. An after-credits scene showed us Bruce Willis as David Dunn, his superhumanly strong Unbreakable character, and the possibilities became very intriguing. The director announced his intention to make Glass and that Split was, in fact, the second part of what would be a trilogy. Glass would bring back the brittle-boned character of that name played by Samuel L. Jackson in Unbreakable, along with Willis and the newly introduced McAvoy character(s). OK, sounds good. Let’s go! Well … shit. 2019 has its first legitimate clunker. He has a remarkable ability to employ both lazy and overambitious writing simultaneously. He puts a lot in play with Glass but doesn’t seem to have a distinct idea of where to take it.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

Christopher Landon follows up his somewhat creative original with an overly ambitious sequel that starts off fantastically but gets lost in its second half. Jessica Rothe returns as Tree, the college student who got stuck in the Groundhog Day murder loop in the original. The sequel starts with Ryan (Phi Vu), the character who walked in on Tree and Carter (Israel Broussard) stuck in a brand new murder loop with a seemingly different baby mask killer. Landon and friends go crazy, establishing a reason for the whole murder loop thing (a quantum physics experiment) and setting up some scenarios that openly acknowledge the plot of Back to the Future 2, featuring doppelgangers and everything. So far so good—but then the plot goes Treecentric again and becomes about her fixing other elements of her life, leaning hard on emotional stuff rather than the totally clever gimmicks the film presents in the first half. In fact, the movie basically ignores the doppelganger element and drops it completely, becoming just another murder mystery that feels like a bad Scream sequel.

The tale of Toothless, the freaking adorable animated dragon, comes to a close (maybe) with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, the third chapter in what producers are calling a trilogy. Yeah, you know, the same thing they said about Toy Story 3 before green-lighting Toy Story 4. If the story continues from this chapter, you won’t get any complaints from me. I think the dragon beat could very entertainingly go on with this franchise. Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), now the chief of his Viking tribe, and dragon buddy Toothless happen upon another Night Fury dragon, this one a female, and Toothless is justifiably smitten. After a first date that involves some hilarious show off dancing, the two hit it off, and Hiccup might find himself staring down a future life without Toothless in it. The movie clocks in at 104 minutes, but it feels more like 60. Director Dean DeBlois, who directed all three Dragon films, gets credit for making the proceedings breezy—and never boring. His only other directing credits are the equally enjoyable Lilo & Stitch and a Sigur Ros documentary. Thankfully, the great Jonsi of Sigur Ros provides another terrific song for the soundtrack.

Taking some cues from Mad Max, the Book of Revelations and, yes, Radiohead, The Second Part is another healthy dose of family-friendly fun where both sides of the age spectrum should laugh heartily. One of my favorite moviegoing things is to hear an adult blast out laughing, and then their kid follow suit. Either the kid is, indeed, in on the joke, or he/she just wants to be like the parent. Cut to five years after the end of the first movie, and our hero Emmet (Chris Pratt) is happily buying coffee in Apocalypseburg, a devastated Lego land of sullen tones and broken dreams. Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) has taken to dramatic narrating at all times, things are getting knocked down as soon as they are built up, and invading aliens called Duplos are mostly to blame—invading forces that are at once undeniably adorable and unabashedly destructive. It’s a crazed world where Batman (Will Arnett) winds up engaged to Queen Waterva Wa-Nabi (Tiffany Haddish), leader of the Duplo, and Emmet winds up running with a Kurt Russell-type antihero who is suspiciously like him. The reasons for all of the craziness will not be revealed here. Take the kids, and find out for yourself.

Ciria’s Cocina serves dishes like these avocado egg rolls with chipotle sauce and chunky red salsa.

Won’t bite Ciria’s Cocina is a new little spot located amid a group of eateries in southwest Reno. My family’s complimentary serving of tortilla chips included fresh, chunky red and green salsas with a great mix of heat and flavor. The chips were crispy, and we went through two or three baskets during a fairly long wait for entrees.

Although I’m an avowed hot wing aficionado, this was the first time I’ve ordered them at a Mexican restaurant. A dozen chicken wings ($11.99) were doused in a mix of lime juice, butter and Tapatio hot sauce and served with ranch dressing.

The wings were perfectly crispy and moist, and the kick of lime provided a pleasant contrast to the heat—completely enjoyable. We really should have ordered more.

Unless they’re ordered à la carte, all plates include cilantro rice, refried beans, lettuce, tomato and sour cream. The rice was fluffy, though I didn’t detect a whole lot of cilantro or other seasoning.

The beans were on the soupy side, also lacking in flavor. I left most of both on the plate.

My chile relleno and chicken enchilada ($12.99) were pretty good. The chicken was plentiful, and the sauce had a ton of flavor that definitely didn’t come from a can. Likewise, the sizeable pepper was quite tasty—loaded with melted cheese—accented by a very good sauce. My daughter-in-law’s pair of potato enchiladas ($8.99) were essentially mashed spuds in tortilla tubes, topped with a green sauce.

The dish was long on lime, short on spice.

Camarones a la diabla ($14.99) is usually a favorite, but not so much this time. The adobo sauce was lacking garlic and heat, tasted a little burnt and was very oily. It was much improved with a dose of green salsa, but watch out for the

tail-on shrimp if you’re not down with extra crunch.

The pan-crisped zucchini taco my son added was much better ($2.99), loaded with jack cheese, lettuce, tomato and deliciously sautéed, diced squash. This item packed more flavor than I would have expected.

My daughter’s steak fajitas with bell pepper and onion ($14.99) were served with the usual accoutrements, plus rice and beans. Similar to other items, I felt this generally lacked seasoning. The meat was tender but could have used more char. Her older sister’s chicken tinga tostadas ($11.99) were seriously stacked with shredded chicken and onion in a spicy, tomato-chipotle sauce, plus lettuce, tomato, sour cream and guacamole. Other than the wings, this was the best meat dish we sampled and pretty impressive in presentation.

For some reason, every time we order tacos for my grandson they’re the last thing to arrive.

Still, he enjoyed his crispy carnitas bites ($6.98) and grudgingly allowed grandpa to sample a bit of tender, shredded pork. And, on this occasion, his tacos actually took penultimate place. A half-forgotten appetizer order of avocado eggrolls ($8.99) showed up as we were nearly done with the entrees. Four halved eggrolls of sliced avocado and roasted red bell pepper—with chipotle dipping sauce—were oily, unseasoned and easily my least favorite “hot avocado” dish to date. The place is really new and will likely find its footing, but, next time I go, it’s all about the wings. Ω

Big noise Ummm Jr. At the beginning of the second song on Ummm Jr.’s new EP, frontman Taylor King screams. “When I grow up I’m gonna be a goddamn police officer!”

Ummm Jr.’s music is noisy and chaotic. “It comes down to more of an attitude,” said guitarist David Prickett. “Fast. In your face. If that comes across as punk rock, then it’s fucking punk rock.”

Each member has a specific, important role. JJ Westfall, the drummer, is the wild card, a true saltof-the-Earth punk with a purple mullet and tongue piercing. He looks at the ceiling when he talks to you. Prickett is the dad of the group. He often implores the other members to properly tune the instruments or wear a helmet when they skateboard.

As a father of three children, he stepped away from music for awhile.

“Kids, marriage, divorce, remarriage, work, life,” Prickett said. “I didn’t really touch my guitar for three years.”

Andrew Town, bassist, is the sweetheart. “I do what I’m told. Sometimes not very good, but I do it.” They all hold on as their frontman, King, charges them into mayhem.

“Taylor is the Kurt Cobain,” Westfall said.

This ragtag group of misfits, connected by the magic of Craigslist, released its EP First Times on Jan. 27. The bandmates recorded five songs in six hours with Ilya Arbatman.

Tracks like “Lawyers, Doctors, Dentists,” “When I Grow Up,” and “I’m Your Boss” express an anxiety toward conventional 9-to-5 jobs.

“Lyrics usually happen at work because I have a lot of time to think while I’m working,” King said.

“It’s mostly blue collar irritation. … I’ve never been to college. Never will go to college. Always worked mostly warehouse jobs, and I’ve had some harrowing bosses along the way. But they’re also

a huge source of inspiration for me because I like to write from the point of view of what they’re thinking.”

The band draws influence from high-energy acts like Bad Brains, Beastie Boys and Pissed Jeans.

But it seems the band is more defined by what its members don’t listen to than what they do.

“I listen to everything that’s not on the radio,” Prickett said.

“I hate love songs,” King said. “Anything that’s about relationships or girls or feeling sorry for yourself, just really bugs the shit out of me.”

Ummm Jr. has only played a handful of live shows, most recently on March 5 at the Holland Project. The bandmates’ first gig was a Halloween show at a “crackhouse warehouse” for around 70 people.

King laments the nationwide crackdown on house shows, a staple of the DIY scene, after the Oakland Ghost Ship warehouse and artspace burned down in 2016. Otherwise, the group appreciate punk’s evolution. They do not miss planning a DIY tour pre-internet through zines and postcards.

“Now you can just look up Eugene DIY shows on Facebook and you’ll see 20 people, and you’ll just message all of them,” Westfall said.

They do not miss the elitism and danger of ’90s punk shows. “Whenever I hear old timey punkers romanticizing all that old violence, there’s a part of me that thinks ‘badass’ and all that old teenager shit,” Westfall said. “But that’s actually pretty lame.”

They also do not miss the early-2000s pop-punk explosion, featuring such “frat punk” bands as Blink-182 and All American Rejects. The bandmates think punk has reverted to its rightful home: the underground. Ω

The Reno Phil continues its 2018-2019 Classix season with a program of music that “pays tribute to unexplored frontiers.” The concert features guest baritone Thomas Hampson, who will join Reno Phil Orchestra for Michael Daugherty’s musical portrait of the 16th president of the United States of America titled Letters from Lincoln. The performance will also feature Ludwig van Beethoven’s Overture to Fidelio, op. 72c and conclude with the RPO and Reno Phil Youth Symphony Orchestra playing Antonín Dvozák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor, “From the New World.” The work, also known as the New World Symphony, was written during the 1890s when the Czech composer lived and worked for time in the United States. A hard yuk story I’m a 34-year-old struggling comic. My girlfriend is a 29-yearold children’s therapist. We’ve been together for a year. She wants to move in with me, wants me to meet her parents—adult relationship stuff that I don’t feel ready for now. I love her, but I live in a studio without a kitchen. I don’t even have a car. As a man, I want to be a “provider” for the woman in my life. She doesn’t want to wait.

Your reluctance to be all “let’s move in together and start a life over my hot plate” probably comes out of how (according to crosscultural research by David Buss and other evolutionary psychologists) women seem to have evolved to seek men with the ability to acquire resources—that is, to “provide.”

Men coevolved to expect this— and feel they need to rise to the occasion in order to get (and retain) the ladies. In other words, you, as a man, are psychologically driven to feel unsettled when, in terms of sheer earning power, you’re just this side of living in your car.

This might lead you to wonder why, if you’re so wigged out about being broke, your girlfriend’s evolved psychology seems to be all “yeah, whatever.” Well, there was no such thing as “wealth” in ancestral times, so cues to the ability to acquire resources seem to point to mate quality. As I’ve written before, a woman’s seeing ambition, entrepreneurial thinking and high intelligence in a guy who isn’t exactly raking in the bucks with a crop harvester may ring enough of her psychological bells to make him a choice.

A woman who isn’t yet in “let’s make babies!” mode might also be more open-minded than realistic.

Think about the life you want, and ask your girlfriend to think about the future she wants, and then put your wants together (along with the timetable for each) and see how well they fit. Sure, comedy is a career that can eventually pay off, but for many, it never goes beyond driving around to do $50 sets in suburban Yuk-Yuk Huts.

If it’s “babies or bust!” for her, consider how willing you’d be to trade your comedy dream for a dad job—the boringly stable kind with a reasonable paycheck. Unfortunately, actual money tends to go over better

at the kids’ dentist than a pair of free tickets to The Chuckle Castle plus a garbage bag of recyclables and a pledge to come back with more every day.

A scar is born My guy friend said my problem with men is that I keep forgetting who I am. According to him, I’m smart, beautiful, accomplished, funny and super cool, but, the moment I like a guy, I act weirdly needy and turn guys off. How do I change this?

Unfortunately, self-loathing is only stylish for about 20 minutes—and only if you are a newly goth 13-year-old. Also unfortunate is a big, long-standing error in psychology, overvaluing talking and undervaluing action as the way to change our default behavior—meaning the way we typically react. Granted, recognizing where you’re going wrong and how you could behave less counterproductively isn’t unimportant or useless. But research by clinical psychologist Stefan G. Hofmann and his colleagues suggests that taking action alone— without talk therapy—leads to dramatic shifts in thinking, including significantly diminishing “negative self-perception” and other counterproductive beliefs.

As for your tendency to go all needypants around a guy you like, ask yourself why you do this—not the underlying reason but why you let your emotions drive your behavior. People don’t think to ask themselves that, but as I write in my book Unf*ckology: A Field Guide to Living with Guts and Confidence, “your feelings are not the boss of you.” It isn’t how you feel that matters; it’s what you do.

When you’re around a guy you like, act in a way that serves your interests—like a person with self-respect, which is to say, one who has no problem walking away.

After all, deep down, you know you could get a man to stay with you forever—that’s what basement wall chains and bucket toilets are for. Ω

Many of them have read this book and found it healing, especially if they have gay and lesbian children, and also gays and lesbians that have read the book. It’s got a unique positioning in these times to bring together these disparate groups where, there’s been a lot of hurt and a lot of pain.

Kim O’Reilly taught at the University of Nevada, Reno for 17 years.

She now lives in Reno and has just published her book We Love You, But You’re Going To Hell. The title, she has said, is expressed sincerely by conservative Christians, and experienced painfully by gays and lesbians.

O’Reilly will appear at Sundance Books on the day after this article hits print—March 8, at 6:30 p.m.

Can you talk about your experiences and how you dealt with it?

The title of the book was intended, I assume, to be provocative?

Not intended to be provocative. ... It is to reflect what so many gays and lesbians have heard from their Christian family members, as well as Christian friends—and also what I’ve heard. I am a lesbian and a Christian, a former professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. It’s something that’s so familiar to many gays and lesbians, and this book is written to build bridges between Christians and gays and lesbians. And it’s written specifically to conservative Christians ,to have them take a look at the impact that this does have on gays and lesbians. It was written respectfully and evenly, balanced.

Given the level of distrust, the depth of feeling, how optimistic are you that you can make a difference?

That’s an excellent question, and I am fairly optimistic, not that I think I’m going to go and change the world. I don’t have a savior complex, but part of my work I did at the university as a professor in the College of Education was to build bridges, bring people together, attract various cultures. And I’m looking at religion-versus-sexual orientation, and this is something that I have a lot of experience in and a lot of heart that I’ve put into this as well. And I believe that if people sit down across the table, across the room from each other, that they can talk about their differences. A lot of my training and the work I’ve done in my classrooms as well as workshops [applies], you know, whether it be race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion. ...

My book is written to, again, be healing,

I had an evangelical conservative father, a minister. And he has since passed.

We were very close, but I didn’t come out until I was in my late 20s into my early 30s. When I did come out to my family, it took a lot of, shall I say, grace on my part. It turns out they did accept, even though they still believed the scriptures that condemned gays and lesbians. We had to agree to disagree, which I was able to do when we had a loving relationship, but that’s part of the reason I’ve written this book, is because it reflects what so many ... have grown up with or dealt with, with their conservative Christian family members. .... I was fortunate that I didn’t take on that condemnation, because I didn’t believe and have never interpreted the scriptures in that way, to condemn gays and lesbians. I was fortunate that I didn’t take on that condemnation and have conflict within myself and that was my experience with coming out. Ω
