Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

This week’s issue features our Join the Pack guide, an annual package of stories related to the University of Nevada, Reno and geared toward incoming freshman. This year’s guide features a lot of stories about the new—new programs, new majors, new classes, new research, new faculty, etc. But there’s something missing— both in our guide and from the university itself—the old.

Most of us here in the RN&R newsroom have at least one degree from UNR. All of us have attended classes there.

Most have also taught courses there. We all have a lot of affection for the university, friends who work there, and fond memories of the place.

But, like a lot of local folks, we often feel like there’s a fundamental disconnect between the university and the rest of the community.

Nowhere has this disconnect been more apparent than in the university’s recent development plans. We wrote an editorial last week about how UNR President Marc Johnson was deaf to widespread community opposition to the university’s “gateway” project, which would remove a dozen homes from the area to make way for campus sprawl.

Over the weekend, the news came out that the university plans to demolish an additional eight homes a few blocks away on Evans Avenue to make way for yet more expansion.

This destruction upsets the community, but the university leadership doesn’t care.

So here’s some additional advice to incoming freshman: Welcome to UNR. But don’t try to live too close to campus, unless you want the university to buy your house so they can tear it down.

Re “Here you go” (letters, June 28): In reading the letter by Richard C. Simmonds attacking Secretary Clinton, I’m sure he would agree that Donald Trump has broken a lot of laws.

Almost 20 women have accused Trump of groping them. (Trump, on tape, brags about groping women.) Over a dozen of his staff have been indicted, some of whom have admitted guilt. Ivanka is using the White House as political collateral to make business deals around the world (pulled in $82 million in 2017). Foreign governments are pouring millions into Trump hotels.

And Trump is covering up evidence of his Russian connections that could lead to his being impeached. This is just a partial list of Trump breaking our country’s laws.

No parent with young children can have the TV on if Trump is on. He is an embarrassment to all. Even Trump’s wife sleeps in another bedroom in the White House.

WWBD? Ancient Greek playwrights (Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles spring readily from an internet search) used a group of actors, almost exclusively men, alas, called the Chorus, who stood to the side of the stage and provided a running narrative of the proceedings, keeping the audience attuned to plot developments and adding a welcome source of continuity and clarity to the sometimes convoluted twists and turns of the play.

If said Chorus existed in contemporary political discourse, and were savage, profane, outspoken to a fault, and sometimes vulgar, they would epitomize what we are fortunate to have in our own Bruce Van Dyke. While they claim that regulated cathouses lower (their personal) property values, there is no consideration to the fact that little Johnny may get the clap or die of AIDS from that crack-smoking streetcorner prostitute.

The fact that safe, legal and protected/ inspected houses of ill repute reduce abuse of women and the chance that little Johnny’s dick won’t fall off seem beyond their mentality. (Property values trump public safety always for them.)

So sad that, to these twits, sex is a dirty thing not to be discussed in good society.

Maybe it’s time for them to start an antisex league, including the evils of masturbation, too. It will make you go blind, for God’s sake.

either Nye County Commission districts 4 or 5—Dan Schinhofen’s district—in the June 12 primary.

Water was the big issue and also Dan’s joining the establishment campaign to vilify Dennis Hof in an attempt to thwart his bid to unseat incumbent Assemblymember James Oscarson.

I believe most residents of Nye County are grateful for Mr. Schinhofen’s advocacy to at least complete the studies for Yucca and so reach a point of determination as to whether it is safe to proceed with the project. Hopefully he can be kept on by the County in a consultant capacity.

Trump wrong on some things There’s a 1964 novel, Convention, by Charles Bailey and Fletcher Knebel, about a Republican presidential candidate who gets bad spin because the USSR agrees with his views on controlling arms. Two of the GOP heroes of the novel talk about how stupid it is to penalize leaders just because their views happen to overlap with those of communists, and one of them—a retired U.S. general—says, “They even praised me once. If we made policy by trying to take the reverse of the communist line, we’d wind up in knots.”

It was a commentary on red baiting and the way McCarthyites smeared those who voted in ways that might happen to also support the coexistence policies of Russia.

Sometimes adversaries have common ground.

Now let’s leap forward about 15 years to comments Republican U.S. Sen. Paul Laxalt made to reporters at the Holiday Inn in Reno about how the CIA had no idea the Shah of Iran was in trouble until he was deposed in 1979.

That came after U.S. intelligence failed to predict the 1973 Yom Kippur war but before it similarly missed the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, and the 1998 Indian nuclear test.

Rep. Brad Schneider: “Why does President Trump continue to side with Vladimir Putin over our intelligence agencies?” Sen. Jeff Flake: “I couldn’t believe that a president would put as much faith, or more faith, in the words of a dictator ... over our own intelligence services.” That’s a false choice. Our intelligence services have bungled time and again, have cooked up “intelligence” on demand, have let themselves be politicized. Our intelligence services have been an embarrassment. When

the CIA engineered the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Iran, re-installing the deposed and despicable Reza Pahlavi, it sentenced Iranians to a generation of torture, misery and repression, earning the hatred of Iranians for the United States, encouraging the 1979 hostage-taking at our Tehran embassy. There’s no reason to fault Trump—or anyone else—for having little faith in U.S. intelligence. There are plenty of other grounds on which to fault this “president,” as John McCain showed in his statement denouncing Trump without praising U.S. intelligence.

CNN: “Trump deals a shocking blow to US intelligence agencies.” The fact is, from Guatemala to the Bay of Pigs, and from Iran to Iraq, U.S. intelligence agencies have dealt shocking blows to the United States.

Newsweek: “Former CIA director: U.S. intelligence agencies might want to withhold information from Trump.”

That’s probably better than U.S. intelligence passing false information to officials like Colin Powell and George W. Bush, who then made it public, as Bush did on October 7, 2002: “We’ve learned that Iraq has trained al Qaeda members in bomb-making and poisons and deadly gases.”

NPR: “In Helsinki, Trump Appeared To Side With Russia Over U.S. Intelligence Community.” So did antiwar activists and many Democrats in 2003 when George W. Bush was trying to launch an unnecessary, unprovoked war against Iraq, and Russia tried to negotiate a settlement between Bush and Iraq.

We oppose Donald Trump. That doesn’t mean we think the use of any unprincipled method is acceptable in making the case against him. Ω

Childish Trump fouls baby nutrition How much worse can it get? We already wake up each morning dreading the daytime nightmare of the Trump Administration.

We’re beyond being embarrassed and shamed by our president and find ourselves cheering the 250,000 Britons who demonstrated against Trump, flying the Trump Baby, a perfect emblem for this childish, shallow and selfish man.

Trump’s toddler tantrums at NATO were disgusting, as was his arrogant and unbelievably boorish behavior in Britain, insulting the prime minister and disrespecting the 92-year-old queen. His shameful comments supporting Putin over our intelligence agencies and our very democracy were deeply painful to watch. What must the world think of us?

Back at home, Trump has been unable to reunite all the children snatched from their immigrant parents, despite a court order to do so. Then, he pardoned two convicted arsonists—ranchers Dwight and Steve Hammond—who, according to federal prosecutors, started fires on public lands

in Oregon to hide their poaching. This is a man our local U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei, our U.S. Senator Dean Heller, and our attorney general and would-be governor Adam Laxalt support?

Intentionally starting wildfires on public lands is such an obvious threat to firefighters and wildlife, it should be easy to condemn. Nevada’s junior U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto had no problem doing so, using strong language in a written release. “Trump’s pardon sends the message that there are no consequences for committing arson in our public lands. …

The president is constitutionally obligated to uphold the rule of law, defend our court system and support members of law enforcement, not undermine them.”

No public comments about the pardon were provided by Heller or Laxalt. Amodei’s spokesperson rationalized his silence to the Reno Gazette Journal by saying since it was a presidential pardon, “We’re going to sit this one out.” None of them want to risk criticizing Trump in any way for fear of

inspiring a Twitter attack from the vindictive commander-in-chief. Or perhaps they agree with the president’s decision. We don’t know because they won’t tell us.

My personal rage reached new heights when I learned that Trump directed our representatives at the World Health Assembly summit in Geneva to oppose a May resolution intended to promote breastfeeding, choosing instead to side with the corporations that manufacture baby formula.

As a Peace Corps volunteer at a Center for Malnourished Children in the Dominican Republic in the late ’70s, I saw babies die from malnutrition and its associated diseases while their mothers spent their meager funds on baby formula dumped in the country by Nestle and other manufacturers. Company representatives would travel to our remote village to deliver samples, claiming the formula would enable Dominican babies to grown up strong and healthy, like American babies. But when the expired formula was mixed or diluted with the dirty, parasitic river water, its nutritional value was

seriously compromised. Babies died. It’s not something you can forget, or forgive.

Ecuador introduced the resolution to promote breastfeeding and limit the promotion of formula products in hospitals when women give birth. Every health professional in the U.S. knows the benefits of breastfeeding, but nevertheless, our country threatened Ecuador with trade sanctions and the withdrawal of some military aid if they didn’t drop the resolution. Ecuador acquiesced, and then we threatened other countries who wanted to take Ecuador’s place. Finally, Russia stood up to the U.S. bullying and introduced the resolution, which eventually passed but only after the U.S. doggedly lobbied to change the language to protect the economic interests of baby food and formula manufacturers.

The Spanish word for shameful is much more powerful when hurled at someone face to face, but I use it here in its most literal and insulting sense. Sin Ω verguenza.

U.S. Sen. Dean Heller may wish he had waited for the Senate probe of Brent Kavanaugh before giving the Trump supreme court nominee his support.

On Monday evening, July 9, Heller attended Donald Trump’s announcement of Kavanaugh’s name at the White House, then Heller sent out a news release later that same evening. It read in part: “Judge Kavanaugh has a record of adherence to the Constitution and has demonstrated a commitment to interpreting the law—not making it. I expect the U.S. Senate to conduct a fair, thorough confirmation process, and I look forward to meeting with the nominee.”

He did not explain how he knew to characterize Kavanaugh’s record as “adherence to the Constitution,” since he had not had time to research that record yet.

Note that in sentence one Heller endorses Kavanaugh, then in sentence two calls for a “thorough” confirmation.

It quickly became known that Kavanaugh, in In re Aiken County (2013), had found that the president of the United States must pursue approval of the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump, even if Congress has not approved money for that pursuit.

During the Obama administration, President Obama wrote budgets which did not include funding for the congressionally-approved dump. And Congress failed to add the money back into the budget.

In his ruling, Kavanaugh wrote that “the President may not decline to follow a statutory mandate or prohibition simply because of policy objections.”

He did not address where the president should obtain money for continuing the dump project that Congress had not appropriated.

Heller, a dump opponent who has sworn to keep the dump out of Nevada, subsequently met with Kavanaugh and could have taken the opportunity to express reservations about the nominee. Instead, he restated that he was “supporting Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation.”

By contrast, Nevada’s other senator—Catherine Cortez Masto—responded to the Kavanaugh nomination by issuing a statement listing what she expects of a justice and then ended, “I plan to meet with Judge Kavanaugh in the coming months and will review his qualifications thoroughly.”

CauSe and effeCt In an interview with the New York Times, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval—who is not seeking reelection—responded to Republican Adam Laxalt’s antiSandoval campaign for governor by saying he “won’t support a candidate that is going to undo anything that I put forward.”

Laxalt opposes the Affordable Care Act, which Sandoval has cooperated with and for which he set up state administrative procedures instead of leaving Nevada’s applicants to a federal process. And Laxalt also says he will try to repeal the increased business taxes Sandoval used to fund increased education spending in the state.

Hotel sues victims Concert tragedy called terrorism in a preemptive move, mGm resorts International—which owns Mandalay Bay—filed more than a thousand July 20 complaints in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles against victims of the Las Vegas concert shooting.

The filing claims the Mandalay Bay resort, where the Oct. 1, 2017 attack originated, did not incur liability as a result of the attack, and the corporation wants the court to tell the victims so and dismiss already-filed lawsuits.

A gunman, Stephen Paddock, fired on the concert crowd of about 22,000 from a 32nd floor room in Mandalay Bay, killing 58 people and wounding hundreds of others, then killing himself.

Fortune magazine’s report on the corporate legal action posted online opens with a photo of the MGM sign in Las Vegas bearing

the sentence, “Our prayers for the victims.” A boycott of the companies is underway.

An MGM statement reads in part, “The Federal Court is an appropriate venue for these cases and provides those affected with the opportunity for a timely resolution. Years of drawn out litigation and hearings are not in the best interest of victims, the community and those still healing.”

The rationale for the unusual legal action is a federal law enacted as a result of the September 11 tragedies, the “Support Anti-Terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies Act of 2002,” or the Technologies Act. According to the trade website Business Insurance, “The federal law … limits liability for terrorist attacks when qualified anti-terrorism technologies have be deployed. Shortly after the shooting, an FBI spokesman

reportedly said at a news conference that there was no evidence indicating that the shooting was an act of terrorism.”

The Technologies Act “precludes any finding of liability against plaintiffs for any claim for injuries arising out of or related to Paddock’s mass attack,” the hotel filing said.

However, some sources say the Technologies Act protection is not available to just anyone. In order to be eligible for liability protection under the law, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security would have to have conducted “comprehensive” testing of services, designs or technology used on the night of the concert killings and determined they were safe for use as intended, and the secretary of Homeland Security—currently Kirstjen Nielsen, Elaine Duke on the night of the killings—must designate the incident an act of terrorism.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, the 2001 PATRIOT Act—Public law 107-52—defined “domestic terrorism” this way: “A person engages in domestic terrorism if they do an act ‘dangerous to human life’ that is a violation of the criminal laws of a state or the United States, if the act appears to be intended to: (i) intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination or kidnapping.”

The FBI has declined to call the act terrorism because no motive has been established.

Business Insurance reported further that the Technologies Act— known as Public law 107-296—“was passed in response to reluctance by private sector security companies to deploy security technologies in civilian settings due to liability concerns.

Among other things, the law limits the liability of the sellers of security services to the amount of insurance that DHS determines it should buy, bars claims against downstream users of the security technology and requires that disputes over damages be heard in federal court.”

It is not known if MGM/Mandalay Bay was using new or innovative services or technology that had been

KR LT PR ES EN TS certified by DHS, but the corporation claims it hired a security service that is certified, though it has not identified it.

The shooter was in the hotel for six days, adding a second suite four days into his stay, and bringing in a substantial arsenal—including 14 .223-caliber AR-15style rifles, seven .308-caliber AR-10-style rifles, a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson Model 342 revolver and a .308-caliber Ruger bolt-action rifle.

After the 1991 Tailhook convention, where Navy and Marine flyers staged a hallway gauntlet in which their women colleagues were mauled and assaulted, Lt. Paula Coughlin—who was brushed off in official channels—went public with her complaints about her treatment at the event in the Las Vegas Hilton. The result was replacement of highly placed officials and changes in military procedures.

Coughlin received an out-of-court settlement from the Tailhook organization and $5.3 million in damages from the Hilton after a jury trial, the jurors having concluded the hotel was negligent in not providing security.

Subsequently, what one journalist called a murderer’s row of powerful lobbyists was deployed to win special treatment under Nevada laws for the casino industry at the 1995 Nevada Legislature. Legislators were receptive. Nevada law was already full of hundreds of liability waivers, from rental storage yards to physicians. Lawmakers hand them out like cookies, and, in this case, it was the casino industry that was seeking the measure, an industry that normally provides plenty of campaign “contributions.”

The bill, as originally drafted, contained language that would have voided Coughlin’s award from the jury, but it was likely included in the bill to draw attention away from the rest of the measure, and it worked like a charm. Coughlin flew to Nevada to fight it, and her presence in the legislative halls kept the eyes of the press and public off the ball.

The legislation was approved after the anti-Coughlin language was stripped from it, making it burdensome to sue casino properties for lax security, and the consequences quickly became apparent.

In January 1997, just days after the sentencing of a suspect for an August 1996 rape, armed robbery and attempted murder at the Reno Hilton, the hotel sharply reduced its security, losing many of its most experienced guards.

That same month, an 18 year-old-man followed a seven-year-old girl, Sherrice Iverson, into a women’s bathroom where he molested and murdered her.

Such incidents were now shielded from legal consequences for hotels. Ω

The casino industry is aggressive in avoiding liability.

The corporation has argued that there was no way it could have foreseen the attack, no “numerous similar” previous incidents.

But the Baltimore Post Examiner published a section of a plaintiff court document that reads: “Short of pulling the trigger, a nearly identical situation to the shooting happened at Mandalay Bay on November 29, 2014. On that day, a housekeeping attendant discovered that a guest on the 24th floor had brought multiple semi-automatic assault rifles—and a silencer—in his Mandalay Bay room. One of the high-powered rifles was equipped with a scope and ‘positioned … so that it was pointed out of his hotel room window at the Mandalay Bay and towards the Las Vegas Strip.’ The weapon’s owner appeared to be set up to shoot at a large mass of people on the Las Vegas Strip, and he was ultimately sentenced to 40 months in prison. The above information was gleaned from federal court filings.

Plaintiffs have submitted [Freedom of Information Act] requests to several agencies involved with the incident, in hopes of obtaining additional information on their individual investigations. In response to these requests, Plaintiffs have learned of twenty-eight (28) other ‘suspicious situations’ that share a similar categorization as this incident, which plaintiffs must investigate.”

Catching fire The AlertWildfire program A system of remote mountaintop cameras helps protect Lake Tahoe by providing an early warning when wildfires first start smoking.

The AlertWildfire program, initiated by the University of Nevada, Reno, is rapidly spreading across the West. The 17 cameras operated at Tahoe and parts of the Sierra are now joined by others set up in Southern California and Idaho. More will soon be operating in Northern California’s Sonoma County, a site of deadly wildfires last year.

“The first of many” will soon be on the job in Oregon, said Graham Kent, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory.

The goal, simply, “is try to make every fire smaller,” Kent said.

Back in 2013, Kent and colleagues attached the first cameras to seismic sensors in the Lake Tahoe area with the idea of providing a bird’s eye view of wildfires in their early stages. There are now nine such cameras in the Tahoe Basin, with two more planned. Another eight are situated at highelevation vantage points in nearby parts of the Sierra and other mountaintop locations.

The system is monitored by fire agencies during fire season, with operators able to manually rotate, tilt, pan and zoom the camera of their choice. While the system is credited with first detecting some wildland fires, its biggest value is giving fire

agencies the ability to quickly get a look at a fire once they know it’s burning, usually after the first 911 calls, Kent said. They can then determine, and quickly, what resources need to be assigned to the fire.

“The thing that is generally missing is ‘what do I need to put on this fire right away?’” Kent said. “If you don’t have these cameras, it’s a guess situation.You can know exactly what the scale is right away.

There’s no delay.”

The WildfireAlert system showed its value last December in San Diego County at a time when Southern California was under fiery siege, Kent said. The Lilac Fire burned more than 4,000 acres and destroyed more than 150 structures, but because local fire officials could use the cameras to determine no other fires were burning at the same time in the immediate area, they could put maximum resources on the blaze and keep it from growing much larger, Kent said.

“Stuff like that has made this a popular thing to do and the right thing to do,” he said.

Had the cameras been functioning back in June 2007, there’s every chance the Angora Fire, which destroyed 254 homes outside South Lake Tahoe, might have been stopped early on, Kent said.

The system is a bonus when it comes to protecting Tahoe, said Heidi Hill Drum, chief executive officer of the Tahoe Prosperity Center, which has raised thousands of dollars to fund camera installation.

“A devastating fire to our region would hurt all of those things,” Drum said. “[The cameras] directly relate to our mission.”

Earlier this month, lightning storms ignited three small wildfires near Drum’s home in Meyers, California, just outside South Lake Tahoe and near the site of the disastrous 2007 Angora Fire.

Using one of UNR’s remote cameras situated at Sierra-at-Tahoe ski resort to the west, firefighters were able to monitor the three lightning fires early on and assign firefighting resources accordingly.

Drum said she is often told by Tahoe fire officials how much they value the AlertWildfire system.

s many students across the district prepare to return to classrooms, the RN&R sat down with Washoe County School District Superintendent Traci Davis to talk about everything from new school construction to resources for English Language Learners.

That new expansion at Damonte Ranch high School opened in april. and that’s the first project the district has completed since getting its new capital funding source through the approval of the WC-1 ballot measure, right?

Correct. And I was just at Damonte yesterday, and that extension is just beautiful. … Damonte has a lot of kids, and if you’ve ever been in Damonte when passing time happens, it is like going upstream with thousands of kids. But it’s so nice that they have the available space now.

That will help reduce some of the overcrowding at Damonte. And then when you think of our two middle schools that we’re opening—Sky Ranch and Desert Skies—Sky Ranch is about 25 percent done. Desert Skies is a little bit less than that.

There are some things that are pending that I cannot address, but we are still moving forward with building a high school in Wildcreek—and still building a middle school in Arrowcreek. When you think about kids being on the bus for an hour or so getting down to Pine, it’s important that all of our communities have schools that they can go to and not spend tons of time on buses. We have some kids who are on the bus for an hour and half, but that’s because they live in remote spots. But there are opportunities where that doesn’t need to happen, and I think Arrowcreek is a great example of where that doesn’t need to happen.

just Washoe that has an issue with balancing its budget. What I think is interesting is that, when you look at how much money school districts receive now and how much they received 10 years ago, school districts are doing amazing work with almost the same amount of money. I am very proud to say that as I work with legislators, I think everybody sees that there needs to be an improved funding mechanism per-pupil. …

People like to say, “Oh, Nevada ranks last in education.”

But the truth of the matter is we don’t rank last in education.

If you look at where we rank in education, we’re in the 30s, which I’m not saying that’s great, but we’re not last. The problem is that the algorithm is based on per-pupil funding, language spoken at home, if the parents have a post-secondary degree, and student achievement.

The one thing that school districts actually control, which is student achievement, we’re actually doing a good job at. We have to do a better job, but people reporting that data have to do a better job of explaining that—because across this state, we are graduating more kids.

Eventually, Nevada’s schools are supposed to start getting, I believe, a 15 percent wholesale tax on sales of recreational and medical marijuana. To my understanding, right now it’s being deposited in the state’s rainy day fund to later be put into the distributive school will account. Any idea when marijuana you’ll start fund receiving schools? those funds?

Here’s the thing.

I think it’s intricate, right? The funds will come to us. … The question is … if the funds end up being on top of what we actually would get, or if there’s a balance between our local funds, and then they balance it out. Those are some of the questions that have come up.

It’s the belief of the voters—and we hear this all the time—“We believed that was going to be on top of what you would already receive.” When you look across the districts, most districts are running a deficit. It’s no secret. It’s not

Well, there’s that school funding study being conducted

by Augenblick, Palaich and Associates on behalf of the state right now. It’s supposed to identify “the resources needed to serve our students in Nevada.” Having read it, I have to say it seems seriously vague, like the purpose is to see very generally how well people think the state’s various districts are doing.

I think it’s going to give people the opportunity to weigh in on how well the state is doing and if we’re funding education appropriately.

And I know they’ve done this study in previous years. And the goal is, I think, to get public input—simply get public input about funding.

Do you think we’re funding at the correct level or not funding at the correct level? And I think it’s great that it’s an opportunity statewide, right? So we have encouraged our employees … our parents, our community, anyone that’s receiving this, to take it and give honest feedback. I think that honest feedback will help drive robust conversation around what revenues look like across our state and how school districts balance their budgets.

You’re on the school safety task force Gov. Sandoval formed back in March. And that task force wants more funding for school police officers, right?

Specifically, in Washoe County, the desire is to have them in middle schools. I realize we’ve had two school shootings in middle schools since 2006, but these events are still very rare.

Do you think more police are necessary?

Because what we’ve learned from our students … is that when they see a police officer in the school in high school, they feel safer. The police officer, especially in the Washoe County School District, is about building relationships with the kids.

So, kids can come share information firsthand if they hear something. It’s not always in the sense of “You need a police officer in case something goes down.” … Many of the things that have happened in our schools that we’ve gotten resolved quickly, it was because kids have relationships with school police.

I want to be clear that every superintendent across the state believes that there should be more. The rural counties use school resource officers. Clark County and we use school police. So, that program has been put on hold. We’re still doing some things in our district to address that with our counselors.

If I think about when I started this journey, we were at 63 percent.

When you think about not just increasing the graduation rate but how we close achievement gaps—because we had huge

achievement gaps with a variety of kids—we look at all of our kids, whether they’re special ed kids, whether they’re our English Language Learners, whether they’re African American, Native American, whatever. We believe that we should not be having achievement gaps. We’re super excited, last year, for the first time, we closed achievement gaps in all subgroups. We’re very hopeful that will go up this year. I do believe we’re on track. And I know a lot of people talk about, “Oh, yeah, that was easy because they didn’t have to pass tests.” I always say to them, “If they didn’t have to pass tests, then why isn’t every district at a hundred percent, if it was that easy?” It’s not that easy. It is very hard. We have kids in summer school right now—because kids are faced with trauma; kids are credit deficient; kids are heads of household, where school is important and work is important. So we really have to champion and look at those risk indexes I talked to you about—because each kid might need something different.

That achievement gap can be quite wide for English Language

Learners. What does the school district do to accommodate them at different grade levels?

I think that when you look at instruction, good instruction happens at every level. And a practice that might be effective in kindergarten is still a practice that could be effective in the 12th grade. And even though we differentiate, and maybe it’s scaled up based on the level of the student, some of those instructional strategies that are being used benefit our ELL students.

And I’m going to say that they also benefit non-ELL students—like when we talk about high yielding strategies to read. English could be your first language, right? And I think that what we have to talk about is that kids faced with trauma are not always ELL kids.

We have kids from America who are not reading at grade level because they don’t get the lap time, and they don’t have the necessary skills walking into kindergarten. Some of those same strategies we use—whether it’s early intervention around chunking or blending or letter sounds, it works for every kid. … We have some pull-out.

We have some one-on-one. We have some group activities. We have an ELL department that does a lot of

training on effective strategies for, specifically, our English Language Learners. … People always think of ELL as Hispanic kids. The truth of the matter is, we have over a hundred languages spoken in the district—from Swahili to Italian to Russian to Spanish. … When we think about the success of our students who have been refugees, right?—they’re not necessarily speaking Spanish.

And the district announced that it just graduated its first refugee student in May—a student from Syria, right?

We did. And I think that’s a testimony to resiliency, hard work, grit and what’s happening in our buildings every day. … When you come to a country, you may not speak the language or know all of those parts, but then you put your grit and your resiliency into it. She has a diploma.

And that diploma means she met the requirements that every other kid had to meet to get that diploma. There is no special diploma for certain kids.

Suds of summer seasonal local beers

’m a dyed-in-the-wool iPa fan, and i realize that puts me a few years behind the curve. The iPa craze has been surpassed by fresher trends—among them sour beers, fruit beers and competitive flavor mash-ups that might have resulted from a collision between a pastry chef and a kindergartener. Fifty Fifty’s “carrot cake brown,” lead Dog’s “s’mores stout w/ Peanut butter” and 10 Torr’s “spicy Tomato clam & oyster lager” were all on the vendor list for the strange brew festival, held in May at brewer’s cabinet. granted, you won’t see all of those quirky brews year-round on tap, but in any case, it’s fair to say that reno’s brewers have gotten creative—whether they’re exploring every nuance of old-school styles like pilsner or stout, or trailblazing with flavor combinations that’ll shock your grandma.

With strange brew behind us and summer patio drinking season upon us, i stopped by a few local breweries to find out what’s on tap for summer. at each establishment, i asked the bartender, server or brewer to recommend the most quintessentially summer beer. and i’m glad i did. i remain a die-hard iPa fan— but one with noticeably expanded horizons.

Fruit roulette

The sidewalk-adjacent patio at Silver Peak on Sierra Street is a prime spot for downtown people-watching, and the rooftop patio at Silver Peak on Wonder Street, with its wide-open view of the sky, is a sweet place to gawk at ridgelines and sunsets or catch the occasional intimate, open-air concert. Both locations share a beer list that the brewers have been honing since the ’90s.

On the roof of the Wonder Street location, as I was grooving on a great view of an approaching summer storm over Peavine, the server explained that, technically, the current seasonal release is the Blueberry Berliner, a sour, and added that the Sunset Raspberry, a lager, is longstanding summer seller. I tried both.

Online reviewers gave the Berliner an average of three out of five stars, and one rated its tartness “edgy.” I found it a chaotic mesh of flavors and an awkward color that I tried to appreciate but couldn’t.

As for the raspberry—there are a lot of raspberry beers out there, and they can be sweet, dry, tart, yeasty, hoppy or any combination of the above. Some are beautifully balanced. Some taste like gross, gimmicky sodas. Silver Peak’s Sunset Raspberry has a deep, gorgeous berry hue, a distinct raspberry flavor without much sweetness, and a tartness that doesn’t overwhelm the rest of the flavors.

To my taste, it was just about perfect.

“In beer judging, you always need to take two sips of beer,” said Greg Hinge, brewmaster at The Brew Brothers in the Eldorado.

The first sip and the second can taste completely different—and that’s exactly the case with his Blood Orange Wheat. At first, it registers as having two separate flavors—a sharp, bitter bite redolent of citrus rind and a distinct ester taste. (That’s the flavor in a lot of wheat beers and hefeweizens that can be fruity, almost banana-like, though it doesn’t come from fruit. It comes from a chemical process undergone by the ethanol.)

Those two flavors were such an awkward match they practically quarreled on my palate. But by the second sip, they’d reconciled their differences entirely.

The bitterness was blunted. The taste of citrus peel softened and began to taste like the flesh of a blood orange—though it never got extremely sweet—and the esters harmonized with the rest of the sensations.

Hinge said he likes to play with new flavors, including fruit beers. He devised this one for the The Great Eldorado BBQ, Brews and Blues Festival in June.

“One of the bars [in the Eldorado] uses blood oranges as a garnish,” Hinge said. He got a case of them and started brewing.

Drinking a Blood Orange Wheat at The Brew Brothers, where it’s made, is a mixed experience. On a recent, somewhat busy afternoon, the service was top-notch, professional and precisely timed, but the faux patio in a sunless, overstimulating casino environment made me crave a real patio.

Brew Brothers doesn’t bottle or distribute its beers—but there are some options for enjoying them outdoors on occasion. Hinge is likely to develop new beers for local festivals like Freeze Your Pints Off in the winter and Strange Brew in spring.

For now, the remainder of the Blood Orange Wheat will be on tap only in the casino, but if you’re hankering for something innovative, check the Eldorado’s calendar of outdoor festivals. For each one, Hinge will probably dream up something new.

The Department of Commerce has assessed preliminary newsprint tariffs, which range as high as 32%.

Under The Rose’s newish midtown location—with its wideopen garage door, small front patio, breezy, urban-rustic interior and neighboring bars and eateries—is the kind of place that’s just right as a stop on an afternoon summer bar crawl.

The menu boasted a few fruit beers, including 8260 Grapefruit, a “grapefruit infused blonde ale;” Beauregard, a “pomegranate and blueberry infused porter;” and Pineapple Wit. I’m not opposed to fruit beers.

I like them more often than I think I will, but Under the Rose’s flavor profiles sounded like they could possible lean over into being too complex for their own good.

I stuck to my rule though, and asked the bartender to serve up whichever beer he deemed most quintessentially summery.

He poured some Pineapple Wit into a stemmed pint glass and said,

“This beer has summer written all over it.”

I’m glad I asked. This wellcrafted wit was the highlight of my tour. It’s infused with pineapple and Meyer lemon, which I might have passed up as sounding too showy. But the fruit flavors were so subdued that my drinking buddy—who’s really good at identifying flavors—couldn’t identify the Pineapple Wit’s flavors, other than pointing out that the beer strikes an amazingly well calibrated balancing act. The aroma has the kind of yeasty, Belgian waft that some love. I tend to shy away from it as an IPA-loving hop nerd—but in this beer, it’s almost undetectable on the tongue. The overall flavor is not too sweet, not too tart, and subtly fruity. It drinks like a toned-down sour—toned down enough to attract drinkers who don’t even favor sours. I awarded it the blue ribbon for “Best Local Beer to Sample if You Want to Sample Something Outside Your Comfort Zone and Love It.” Ω

These tariffs are already being collected. Local newspapers, printers, and book publishers cannot absorb these costs. This will lead to fewer jobs and less access to local news in our community.

So far, the unofficial theme of this summer beer tour has turned out to be fruit. And while the list of local fruit sours, ales, ciders, porters and other styles is long, local brewers have not forgotten their roots—as I learned at The Depot.

The top four national best-selling beers in the U.S. are Bud Light, Coors Light, Miller Lite and Budweiser.

Since I usually opt for a craft beer, these four giants are barely on my radar. But every once in a while, a Bud lands in my hand, and each time, I think, “I almost like this.”

And once in a great while, I come across a craft pilsner

and think, “This is what I wish Budweiser tasted like.” The Burner from the Depot is one of those craft pilsners.

Again, I’m glad I asked the bartender to recommend “the summer beer.” Otherwise, I might have defaulted to the Ranch Hand, a light golden American Ale and Depot standard that I’m fond of, and that practically shouts “summer session beer.” But I’ve added this malty Bohemian Pilsner to my list of local favorites.

The Burner, though it tastes like something you might find in a Czech or German café, is named for folks who hold tickets to that nearby, week-long party out in the Black Rock.

Bay Area author Gregory Crouch’s new book follows the career of John Mackay from his days as an impoverished immigrant in New York through his time as a wealthy mining giant in Virginia City.

True tales Gregory Crouch In the 150th year of the city of Reno, it’s essential to take the time to honor John Mackay, our very own titan of industry from the Gilded Age of American history. His statue on the quad at the University of Nevada, Reno portrays a humble miner in the Gold Rush before he struck gold and silver in the Comstock Lode in Virginia City. He amassed riches likened to those of his contemporaries John Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie, but he isn’t as well known.

“That’s because he never lost his good name as a businessman and a mine owner,” said Gregory Crouch, author of the new biography The Bonanza King: John Mackay and the Battle Over the Greatest Riches in the American West.

“He never chiseled on his workers’ wages, and he did what he could do to improve working conditions. That is totally unlike the capitalists of that era that you know today.”

Crouch’s book follows Mackay from his early years as an Irish immigrant and a ship builder’s apprentice living a poor life in New York City.

Sierra Nevada. The story goes that he walked on foot from Downieville, California, to Virginia City at the news of silver ore. He didn’t have a penny to his name. He worked for $4 a day, sometimes three mining jobs at a time.

At age 34, Mackay finally dug into a very rich body of ore. He had been on the verge of defaulting on a loan from a San Francisco moneylender, but he was soon on his way to controlling the Comstock Lode and becoming one of the richest men in the world.

Crouch’s enthusiasm about the era is contagious. He paints a vivid picture of our slice of the American West. Some of the originals of the book’s photos reside in the Special Collections and University Archives at UNR. He credits his factual reporting in part to the digitization of newspaper archives over the last decade. The process was much more laborious in the days of scouring through microfilm.

“It turns out that 19th century newspapers had editorial biases just like 21st century newspapers do,” he said. “So when I looked at what other people had written [on a certain topic], it struck me that what newspaper they had smacked up there on the microfilm had been influencing their take on the story. But that’s not a problem today. With multiple browser windows, I can get the reporting from all of the newspapers about a certain topic at the same time.” He said that even eastern outlets like the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune had correspondents assigned to closely covering the news of the mining world, which makes sense, as plenty of that commerce was making its way by railroad into vaults and banks across the nation.

According to Crouch, Virginia City was the Silicon Valley of the 1860s and 1870s. There were volatile booms and busts of mine stocks. In all, over $300 million of silver and gold was dug from an area of Nevada just two and a half miles long and a few hundred feet wide.

“So, although Virginia City looks like this little tiny place today, kind of living off the whiskey-and-gun-smoke nostalgia of the Old West, it was just not that way back in the heyday,” said Crouch. “Everyone in the United States knew about Virginia City and the Comstock Lode.” Ω

“Glory, malcom X, Philadelphia, and now i’m doing this?”

Go boom In a summer of endless sequels, Equalizer 2 has the distinction of being unoriginal and predictable. It stimulates that part of your brain that likes to see things go boom and bad guys get pummeled, while allowing the part of your brain that likes to solve things and seek intellectual depth go nappy time.

It also has a little guy named Denzel Washington in it, supplying his every line with grace and punching up the quality of a rote script tenfold simply by being on screen. He and director Antoine Fuqua team up once again and make the sequel to a cinematic update of an OK TV show well worth your time. It’s fast food, but it’s good fast food.

Washington returns as Robert McCall, former special ops guy with a taste for vigilantism and tea. He’s just sort of hanging out in Boston, working as a Lyft driver and painting over graffiti at his apartment complex, when word comes in that a good friend has bit the dust at the hands of mystery killers. Robert doesn’t like it when you kill his friends. Robert doesn’t like that much at all. In fact, it’s fair to say Robert will do bad things to your body for such acts.

He goes on a search for the killer/killers, and you will probably figure out who the bad people are fairly quickly. Equalizer 2 isn’t worried about tricking you with any mysteries. It wants to set up some scenarios for McCall’s vicious showdowns with bad folks, and Fuqua does this multiple times with bloody action gusto.

Sequences include a dust up on a train in Turkey, with McCall in full bearded costume, calmly drinking his tea before disposing of multiple attackers in the most improbable yet totally badass sort of way. (Does the teapot become a weapon? Why, yes, yes, it does!) There’s also a shootout in a hurricane, reminiscent of Harrison Ford’s showdown at the end of Patriot Games.

Fuqua makes them all pop in a way that improves upon his work in the first film.

This time out, McCall comes off as a combination of Michael Myers of Halloween and Batman. He’s almost supernatural in his abilities to disarm and dispatch his victims. Doesn’t matter how many guns, hammers and blades are coming at him, he’s going to win. There’s a lot of knife play in this movie, so if you have a hard time with cinematic stabbings, this one is not for you. It sometimes plays like a slasher film.

Balancing out the nasty violence, Washington plays the role with as much finesse as he does those in the Oscar-nominated efforts of his. He’s just so damned cool.

There are other people in this movie, like Melissa Leo, Pedro Pascal and Ashton Sanders (Moonlight). They all do serviceable work but, let’s face it, they all need to shut up and get out of the way so the almighty Washington can orate and kick ass. Many of the people in this film are just around to have their noses broken, necks twisted and fingers pulled apart.

There were a couple of plot threads that, quite honestly, could’ve been dropped, although McCall’s fatherly relationship to Sanders’ character is one of the better parts of the film.

Sanders plays Miles, a wannabe art student who dabbles in gang activity. Washington and Sanders have some good screen time together.

Back when the first Equalizer came out, I openly asked for it to become a franchise. With this, Washington’s first participation in a sequel of any kind, I got my wish. It’s everything that garbage remake of Death Wish wanted to be. The way this one finishes, it feels like it could be the last. No need to stop. Ω

Ant Man and the Wasp

Ant-Man and the Wasp is a fun continuation of what returning director Peyton Reed started with Ant-Man three years ago. I whined a bit about the decent original, a movie that I wanted to be more subversive, having known that Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) was supposed to direct it. I’m over it. Reed kicks some Marvel ass, and his sequel is actually better than the first. After the well done but admittedly gloomy Avengers: Infinity War earlier this year, Ant-Man and the Wasp joins the likes of Thor: Ragnarok as a fun, slightly eccentric diversion from the serious Marvel shit. This one, for the most part, just wants to have a good time, and it succeeds. As the title implies, this is no longer a one-man show for the always entertaining Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. Evangeline Lilly returns as Hope Van Dyne and gets a bigger part of the limelight as the Wasp, who has decidedly better martial arts skills than professional burglar Scott Lang. The Wasp lets the kicks fly in an early scene with a crooked businessman (Walton Goggins), and she owns every moment she’s onscreen. It simply looks like a kick from The Wasp hurts more than one from Ant-Man. Well, that would make sense. She trained him. While the stakes aren’t quite as high as the usual Marvel fare—the entire universe isn’t at risk in this one—Reed and his crew make it more than compelling.

They also make it very funny, thanks mostly to Rudd, ninja master of comic timing.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

This is a big dummy dino joke of a movie. It’s nothing but a brainless, sloppy rehash of Steven Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park sequel, The Lost World, with a lame militaristic angle thrown in (again!). Yes, the dinosaurs look cool, and things get off to an awesome start. The prologue is scary, looks great, is well directed, and seems to be setting the tone for a film that recalls the grim tone of Michael Crichton’s original. Sadly, things degenerate badly after the title credits pop up. When a volcanic eruption on the isle of dinosaurs threatens their genetically engineered lives, Congress holds hearings on whether or not to save them. These hearings involve the return of the one and only Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm. Rather than having Goldblum around for his trademark psycho rambling and dark wit, his character just groans a couple of lines about how we shouldn’t have made the dinosaurs because it goes against nature and they have really big teeth and might bite you. Then he goes away.

Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) return to the island to save Blue, the adorable velociraptor who wants you to pet him. Eventually, the action winds up in a large mansion in the states, where a nefarious businessman is keeping dinosaurs in the basement in order to auction them off in what amounts to a dinosaur fashion show for evil countries that want to weaponize them.

Leave No Trace

Ben Foster, currently tied with Ethan Hawke as the world’s most improved once sucky actors, is phenomenal as Will, a homeless vet living in an Oregon park with his daughter, Tom (an incredible Thomasin McKenzie). Will trains his daughter to live off the land, and how not to be seen. When a jogger sees and reports them, the two wind up in the social services system, undergoing a barrage of tests and eventually being relocated to a work commune. While Will simply can’t adjust, Tom starts liking the indoors. No matter, because Will takes them back into the forest, where their two worlds start to truly separate. Directed and co-written by Debra Granik, the movie poses some serious questions on how PTSD should be handled, and what freedom really is in America.

Foster is tragically sad as Will, a man we know very little about, and won’t know much about by film’s end, other than something has really messed him up. McKenzie will break your heart as the loving daughter who only knows the wilderness but wants to know more. One of the summer’s—and year’s—best films.

Sorry to Bother You

First-time writer-director Boots Riley, leader of musical group the Coup, creates one of the craziest movies you will see this—or any—year with Sorry to Bother You, a hilarious, nasty and even scary showcase for the talents of Lakeith Stanfield and Tessa Thompson. Stated simply, there are tons of “what the fuck?” moments in this movie.

Cassius Green (Stanfield) is living in his uncle’s (Terry Crews) garage, looking for a better life and a job. His performance-artist girlfriend, Detroit (Thompson), encourages him to pursue whatever but not to lose his sense of self. After procuring a job at a telemarketing agency, Cassius finds himself striking out call after call. It’s here that Riley employs an ingenious visual trick, with Cassius physically showing up in the lives of the people he interrupts with his telemarketing nonsense, dropping his desk into one situation after another (people having sex, people mourning, etc.). This does a solid job of conveying the intrusiveness of that particular sales tactic. Thanks to a seasoned coworker (Danny Glover), Cassius is advised to use his white man voice (supplied by the great, and very white, David Cross). This brings immediate success and catapults Cassius up the ladder to the hallowed upstairs office where the “power callers” reside. The road to success involves him becoming more of a douchebag and, ultimately, a revolutionary.

Skyscraper

I’m all for giving Dwayne Johnson a chance to really act and emote. I think he can do more than just run around and raise that eyebrow. (I loved him in Pain & Gain.) But asking him to be solemn and humorless in a movie about a crazy skyscraper catching fire, Towering Inferno-style, is a massive mistake.

This movie sucks the life out of Johnson as he plays Will, a high-dollar security man who lost a leg in his prior occupation. He takes a job in Hong Kong as head of security in the world’s tallest building. Shortly after getting the gig, an evil crime lord sets the building on fire, a building that is largely unoccupied save for its owner (Chin Haun), his entourage, some nasty European criminals, and Will’s wife (Neve Campbell) and children. Will, outside of the building, races to save his family’s life, which leads up to that already infamous, hilariously silly jump from a crane into the burning building. Why? Why take a serious approach to this subject matter? Why not have Johnson do his usual shtick and make this more fun? Director Rawson Marshall Thurber certainly knows how to get laughs. (He was the man behind Dodgeball and Central Intelligence.) Yes, having Johnson doing his usual shtick would’ve been predictable, but maybe not this boring.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado

Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin show up for this nasty film plotted in such a way as to assure it would give the likes of Sean Hannity a monster boner. The timing of this movie is, shall we say, interesting. As real-life tensions build along the Mexican border, with families being separated and humanitarian water jugs being poured out, along comes a movie that shows ISIS terrorists crossing over the Mexican border and blowing up strip malls.

Wait a minute, isn’t Sicario supposed to be about America’s beef with drug cartels? This ISIS stuff feels, well, tacked on. While the terrorism element introduced near the beginning of the movie looks to be the driving force of the plot early on, it all but falls away in favor of a kidnapping subplot intended to start a war between the Mexican and U.S. governments.

Brolin returns as agent Matt Graver, a nasty guy who will blow up your brother as you watch on a laptop if you don’t tell him what he needs to hear. Del Toro is also back as Alejandro, an operative once again hired by the U.S., this time to stir up trouble with the cartels and eventually kidnap Isabel (Isabela Moner), a drug kingpin’s daughter. Moner is a big star in the making. She gives the kind of performance that breaks your heart because it is something so good in service of something so mediocre.

Finbomb Sushi Burrito & Poke Bar offers oversized sushi hand rolls, raw fish rice bowls and ramen noodle soups. During our recent visit, my family dinner group of six was met with two very midtown issues: the hunt for a parking space and a shop with far more customers than seats to put them in.

We ordered from a list of signature bowls and wraps, starting with a pair of sushi rice burritos ($11.95 each). The Hook Up included tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, surimi crab, cucumber, guacamole, crispy wonton strips, sweet chipotle mayo and unagi sauce.

The rice-to-fillings ratio was a bit starch-heavy, but the crunchy bits provided a nice textural juxtaposition.

While trying to order the F Bomb—ahi tuna, yellowtail, salmon, cucumber, red onion, cilantro, masago, wonton strips and unagi sauce—the boss of the line asked, “You like spicy crab?” Producing a half-completed burrito with rice paper, he said, “Extra ahi, and I’ll add nori.” He moved forward by repurposing something already started, so we just rolled with it. Biting through two wrap layers was tough, and the burrito came with very little salmon and no yellowtail. That’s what you get for rollin’ with it.

We ordered three regular size poke bowls ($12.95 each), starting with a Caterpillar featuring freshwater eel, cucumber, avocado, surimi crab, tobiko, edamame, wonton strips and unagi sauce. The rice was so sticky it formed a brick in the bottom of the bowl. There was plenty of unagi and krab, but the chunks of long fish had a faint whiff of bread mold— not my favorite.

Next was a Rainbowl with ahi, salmon, yellowtail, surimi, avocado, green onion, cucumber, seaweed salad, tobiko, wonton strips and unagi sauce. The tuna’s texture and scent were less than fresh and had a really unpleasant aftertaste. We ate the rest of the bowl and said a silent prayer. Oddly, my grandson’s

Hawaiian bowl of ahi, green onion, cucumber, pineapple, seaweed salad, edamame, avocado, tobiko, fried onion and poke sauce seemed fresher, though he hit an unexpected spot of wasabi, which was bit much for the 3-year-old (and not listed on the menu). He moved on to helping with a bowl of ramen.

Speaking of noodles, those in our two ramen bowls ($11.95 each) were definitely dried and reconstituted. In the midst of dinner rush we were told, “the water isn’t ready, but I can microwave it.” Both bowls included paitan “white” broth. The first also featured chashu pork loin, soboro—ground seasoned pork—shitake mushrooms, bean sprouts, green onion, seasoned egg, garlic oil, sweet corn and togarashi, a Japanese chili spice blend. The broth itself was flavorful, though not very warm. The veggies were good.

The pork loin was nice, and the ground bits tasted a bit like breakfast sausage—in a good way. In general it worked, though the spice-sprinkled, boiled egg was a disappointment. Once you’ve had ramen with the jellied yolk of a Japanese seven-minute egg, nothing else compares.

The other bowl came with a garlic lime shrimp mixture that included cocktail-sized crustaceans, sesame garlic oil, red ginger, bok choy, green onion, cilantro, sweet corn, seasoned egg, chili sauce and fresh lime on the side. Both ramen bowls were ordered “spicy,” but while the flavors were good, neither had any discernible heat. The noodles were just OK, though not overcooked. Despite the tepid broth, pedestrian noodles and boring eggs, the ramen was easily the best part of our meal. Ω

To the members of Hot Rod Rebellion—Tom Ducey, Steve Ellison, Kevin Keating and Andy Hernandez— the best sound is a blend of retro and ragged.

Rebels with a cause Hot Rod Rebellion In the last two years, Reno rockabilly band Hot Rod Rebellion has played over 30 shows—including one at the legendary Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood. With the recent release of their debut album, the veteran musicians appear to have found their groove, and, like rockabilly itself, it all started with the King.

“I’ve always been a huge Elvis fan,” said guitarist Steve Ellison. “I went to [vocalist] Kevin [Keating] with the idea, ‘Let’s do a band that plays just Elvis music—not a tribute band or anything— and that kind of evolved into rockabilly.”

Ellison and Keating played hard rock in the style of Rush and Metallica for years. After their old band dissolved, they found themselves looking for a new direction. They put out a Craigslist ad looking for an upright bassist—“nonnegotiable” for the new band. Long-time rockabilly enthusiast Andy Hernandez soon answered it.

Around the same time, punk-rocker and drummer Tom Ducey posted a competing Craigslist ad searching for new bandmates. The four met up for their first practice.

“It kind of seemed like we had already been playing together for years to be honest with you,” Hernandez said. “When you’re playing with the same capability as you or higher, it just comes together so nicely.”

Hot Rod Rebellion played covers of the likes of Elvis, Chuck Berry and Carl Perkins before developing their own originals. With both covers and originals, the bandmates lean heavily into their rougher musical backgrounds, emphasizing the “rock” in rockabilly.

The new album, recorded at Dogwater Studios, features seven original tracks with a notable range of styles that complement the band’s swing-like rockabilly rhythms. “Outlaws” delivers an almost surf-like shimmer to the story of two lovers on the run, and “Atomic Shelter” adds a punk-esque vocal chorus on the post-apocalyptic party.

“Even our originals, I don’t think you could really sit back and say any one of our originals is rockabilly,”said Keating.

“They all have rockabilly flavor.”

The music has an unmistakably retro feel to it, too, but local fans appreciate the band’s distinctly ragged rock edge.

“One of the things that has worked in our favor is the relationship we developed with a group called the Battle Born Dollz,” said Keating. “They’re really into rockabilly, and they’re also into a lot of community benefits, so we kind of established this symbiotic relationship with them.”

The Battle Born Dollz are a women’s community action group whose members often appear in vintage ’40s and ’50s era fashion and hold fundraising events throughout the year. Members of the Dollz attend Hot Rod Rebellion shows and have appeared in a music video for their song “Outlaws.”

Future plans for the band include a three-night performance at this year’s Hot August Nights and the possibility of returning to the studio soon, as they already have new tracks in the works.

“It’s a blast to play this music,” said Ducey. “You pay respect in a certain way, but at the same time you kind of lend your own artistic credibility towards it.”

They all agree, though, that if this band wants to do one thing, it’s hit the road.

“If I could have it my way, I’d tour for the rest of my life,” said Hernandez. Ω

Buddha heat My husband and I are lucky to have a satisfying sex life after 23 years together. Still, to be honest, there are times when we’re just going through the motions. I guess it’s natural that it isn’t as exciting as it was that first year or so.

Maybe we just have to accept it. Is there anything we can do?

It’s like buying your dream house—and then living in it for 12 years. You still love it—but you don’t jump up and down and yell “Woo-hoo! We live here!” the 10,044th time you walk through your door.

The good news is there’s a way to perk up the sexual excitement level in a long-term relationship, and it doesn’t involve attending parties where they have a bowl of keys at the door. You just need to get back to really being there while you’re having sex. This means truly feeling—that is, really being present for—the moment-by-moment sensations, like you did the very first time you got together. You know, back before you started sexual multitasking—running through your to-do list while getting it on—and your sex face started to become a yawn.

Clinical psychologist Lori Brotto, who researches female sexual desire and arousal issues, finds that a practice called “mindfulness”—with Eastern spiritual origins—seems to be “an effective way of re-routing one’s focus ... onto the sensations that are unfolding in the moment.” Mindfulness, which is also a form of meditation, involves bringing your attention to the immediate moment. This isn’t to say you have to meditate to have better sex. However, one of the mindfulness meditation techniques involves scanning your body with your mind, focusing your attention on individual parts and observing the sensations in them in that moment. That’s key.

Brotto writes in Better Sex Through Mindfulness that in her research, “when the women learn to be right where they are when with a partner, rather than in the myriad other places that their mind escapes to during sex, they start to experience sexual contact with their partner in a way that perhaps they had not experienced for months, years or decades.” In other words, yes, there’s still hope to hear animalistic screaming in your

bedroom again—and not just when your husband pulls on the oven mitts and holds the cat down so you can clip her toenails without losing an eye.

In the mood for shrug I’m a 35-year-old guy. My fiancée broke up with me a year ago. I haven’t been on one date since our breakup, and I reminisce about her constantly. My guy friends are like, “Move on, dude. Get a life!”

What is the best way to get over an ex besides time?

Your buddies surely mean well in taking the “just say the magic words!” approach—“Get over it!

Lotta fish in the sea, man!”—but you’re trying to recover from a breakup, not summon a genie.

Lingering feelings of love for your fiancée are the problem. As for a solution, research by cognitive psychologist Sandra J.E. Langeslag suggests you can decrease those feelings through “negative reappraisal” of your ex-partner—looking back and trying to see all the “bad” in her. For example, focus on her annoying habits and rude and stupid things she said and did.

When Langeslag’s research participants mentally trashed their ex-partner, it did diminish the love they felt for their ex. However, there was a side effect: All of this negative thinking made participants feel pretty bummed out. But helpfully, Langeslag came around with a second strategy that helped them block out the feelbad: distraction— answering questions “about positive things unrelated to the breakup or the partner (e.g., What is your favorite food? Why?).”

Probably an even better source of distraction is turning to what Langeslag calls a “secondary task” (like playing a video game). Keep up the negativity and the distracting secondary tasks and before long, you should find yourself ready for a level-three distraction: losing yourself in a forest of Tinder hussies. Ω

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Your past is not quite

what it seems. The coming weeks will be an excellent time to find out why—and make the necessary adjustments. A good way to begin would be to burrow back into your old stories and unearth the half-truths buried there.

At the end of the two hours you’re meeting at 10 Torr? Then what?

Tell me how a type walk works.

It’s a scavenger hunt. The idea is to capture “A” through “Z” with any example of unique, fun, cool, interesting looking typography—so neon signs, letters on the road, anything you can find.

The group has been hosting an annual type walk event since 2011 in which participants take photos of the letters of the alphabet found on signs, graffiti and other places.

So you take pictures of the letters, “A” through “Z.” Are people doing this with cell phones or, like, their Nikons or Canons?

Both—you get cell phones. You get cameras. You get everything.

How would a person progress through the type walk?

Is there a place you’re focusing on this year specifically?

We do a little map. We kind of give a little zone to stick within. Every year we have an area or a theme. Last year we did midtown. … We’ve done Virginia City. We’ve done downtown. We’ve done downtown Truckee. The idea is to actually try to keep it in order. That’s the challenge. You’re supposed to go “A,” “B,” “C” as you do it. It’s kind of a fun event because it makes it open to anybody. It’s not just designers or artists or photographers. It could be anyone who wants to walk around.

We’re starting over right by the Basement, with the idea of trying to capture a little bit of the neon that’s still downtown before it all disappears.

That’s definitely something we face.

A lot of it is disappearing.

Exactly—and quickly, too. And we have cool examples that are very unique to Reno. And, you know, those are disappearing quickly.

How long do people have?

About two hours—so it’s quick.

We’re going to share. The idea is while you walk and do it, you’ve got your cell phone connected. So share it on Instagram. And we always do a poster. The first year was a “T” made out of letters, “Y” and “P,” out of the letters. So this year will be the “K.” We’ll actually spell out “type walk” with this year’s poster. And then we’ll have a poster pick up party in September.

A poster pick up?

Your mission is a poster. So if you collect them all, you can spell “type walk.”

When you put the poster together it’s comprised of, what, the photos of letters you like best?

Right. We go through and pick our favorites, “A” through “Z” and make the letter out of the 26 letters of the alphabet.

How many people are into typography? What kind of crowd does this event draw?

That’s kind of the cool thing about it. I mean, it’s obviously graphic designers. But it’s also fun for photographers, artists.

And, again, because it’s kind of a fun just go out and search, it’s easy to bring a friend. … It’s accessible to anyone. It’s kind of like the old license plate game when you’re a kid in the car.

And tickets?

Twelve dollars. That includes your poster, the poster pick up party and there will be a little typography lecture, too, at the pick up party. Ω

Slow roast I will give Dum Dum credit. He does indeed have one great talent, one he uses and oozes on a nearly daily basis. That’s the ability to piss me off, and piss me off good.

If, for example, you yell at the TV every freakin’ day something along the lines of “Bleep you, you bleeping bleephole!” then we are together in Twitler-twisted solidarity. (Maybe you’re more colorfully creative with your curses—“May the tapeworms of Satan find comfort in your colon, hellish oaf man! May the eggs of a thousand earwigs hatch in your earhole, jive turkey president!”)

Don’t fear your hate. Don’t hate your hate. Don’t be ashamed of it. Your loathing of Don Don and the execrable GOP is pure. It’s powerful. It’s strong. Embrace the

hate. Be liberated by it. Be inspired by it. Our hatred is righteous. Our hatred is beautiful. Indeed, our hatred identifies us as real patriots who honestly give a flaming fig about America. Our hatred will, awesomely enough, SAVE THE GODDAMN COUNTRY. Well, it will if we get off our asses and vote every one of these villainous Repub lickspittles out of office. That, of course, means Heller and Amodei, two of the numerous enablers who don’t dare ruffle the scruff of Putin’s prized puppy. The Election of The Ages is in about 100 days. Just remember that if we Democrats take back the House of Representatives, we can hound, hassle and harangue Dum Dum into a total foam, reducing him to a raving, drooling, tweeting frenzy of frustration. We can Benghazi his ass so relentlessly that we won’t want to impeach him. Seriously!

It’ll be way too entertaining to slow roast him on a rotisserie fueled with all kinds of juicy investigations involving (1) collusion, (2) obstruction, (3) emoluments, (4) porn star payoffs, (5) campaign financial crimes, and—the biggest daddy of them all—(6) mindblowing felonies of the realm of oligarch money laundering.

(Trump doesn’t give a shit about the pee pee tape. Nope, it’s the billions in money laundering that’s the really good action.)

Remember the good ole days, when pissy Republicans would call us “commie pinkos?” So now who are their precious pals and partners, whom they line up to protect, coddle and butt-smooch?

Commie mutherfuckin’ pinkos! As Sly Stone once said, “Life. It melts in your mind.”

And quietly, without fanfare, Mr. Mueller and his team prepare their august surprises. Ω
