Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Generally speaking, we try to focus on local issues here at the RN&R. Sure, we like to talk about movies and music, but most of the time, our news and commentary deal with Nevada.

If we tackle a national issue, we usually try to give it a local angle. (See this week’s feature, page 13, for example.) That said, sometimes there are national or international issues that warrant comment from free thinkers everywhere, no matter where their megaphones are usually pointed. And it seems like, for some reason, that kind of thing has happened a lot more often since November 2016.

The policies currently used by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, under the leadership of Donald Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, are scandalous. If you’ve been under a rock, here’s a nice summary from NPR: tinyurl.com/y98c3f4w.

The bottom line is, Trump administration policy is to separate children of illegal immigrants from their parents and then detain the children in holding facilities that look suspiciously like cages.

Despite fierce competition, this policy might be the most disturbing action perpetrated by this administration so far. And it’s still happening now. In spite of the danger of this “zero tolerance” administration, people still come here to the United States of America to try to create better lives for their families. What do we do instead? Destroy their families.

Our columnist Sheila Leslie has a thought-provoking look at this issue in her column this week, on page 9. As always, we’re fortunate to have her voice in the paper.

I just want to add one thing: Y’all know that borders are imaginary, right? They only exist because some people, somewhere, sometime, agreed on them—probably after some bloodshed. But they’re not real.

They don’t matter. You know what are real? Families.

Re “Immortal toil” (cover story, May 10): We have to stop wasting money and resources to keep people living forever. It was not meant to be. Sure, it makes doctors rich and pharma even richer. What is wrong with passing that wealth to our offspring where it belongs, or to a worthy cause that benefits others and/or society?

Migrant issue Re “Trump’s anti-family policy” (Left Foot Forward, June 7): It truly is a heartbreaking situation to see children ripped from their parents. Why, then, have you singled out those entering the country illegally exclusively for your pity? Every day, hundreds of people are sent to prison and ripped from their children. Why haven’t you spoken before, and why do illegal immigrants qualify for special heartbreak?

Your article is factually misleading. By international law, anyone seeking asylum must do so in the first country they enter, which for those crossing our southern border would be one of several Central American countries or Mexico. By international law, they cannot pick and choose the U.S. Also, prior administrations have the same or worse record on such children. And it has been clarified throughout the media that these children aren’t lost. Very often the custodial family wasn’t home when called, didn’t respond, etc. You have blatantly misrepresented facts and grossly mischaracterized the situation as being unique to illegal immigrants and not one shared by everyone sentenced to prison for the sole purpose of fomenting pity for those entering America illegally. And I am the child of two immigrants.

country” principle. Numerous nations in Latin America, including Mexico, have been made highly unsafe by our war on drugs. And those in charge in other nations—Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, Juan Orlando Hernández of Honduras, Evo Morales in Bolivia, Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua—make it a judgment call how safe those nations are. In addition, some international law experts have argued the principle is obsolete. A student’s view Re “Lethal fiction?” (letters, May 31): Hello, my name is Brenden Bass, and I am a 14-year-old who lives in Reno. Let me start off by saying to Mr. Turner that if you are a veteran (it sounds like you are based on the tone that you take in the letter), I would like to thank you for your service. I would then like to jump right to the point that for a long time, politicians did leap to the “video games are too violent” response, so this isn’t an issue that is completely ignored. While you are right that many Democratic members of Congress do go to the “gun control” response, most Republican members were able to strike the proposed legislation down.

I am not saying that violent video games do not affect some children, because that simply isn’t true. The 1999 shooting at Columbine High School is one example, where one of the students said that he wanted the shooting to be like a video game that he enjoyed. I doubt, however, that the video game was the entire reason for the shooting, as the student’s journal described him wanting to get revenge on the school.

This evidence points to violent video games encouraging some students who have pre existing issues, but not actually causing anything. My last point is about myself and my friends. My friends own violent video games, such as Call of Duty, which I have

played about five times with them. We still think that anyone who even aims a gun at another is a horrible person and that killing is wrong, no matter what circumstance.

While I do think that you make valid points, I just would like to give my two cents into the issue. I do realize that I am just 14, and therefore, I don’t have the experience that adults have, but since I am old enough to be shot in school, I believe that I should at least be listened to.

I believe that gun control is the only way that we can fix this problem.

Voter fraud put to the test Kansas has a secretary of state named Kris Kobach.

He’s one of the Republican officials who says there is rampant voter fraud in the country that makes it necessary to adopt rules that will discourage Democrats from voting.

Kobach won enactment of one of the strangest voting laws in the nation. Voters must do more than produce identification at the polls. They must prove they are citizens.

That resulted in 16,319 Kansans being purged from voter rolls and 31,089 being prevented from registering to vote.

His “leadership” in this field naturally brought him to the attention of those who love cockamamie ideas, and Donald Trump appointed Kobach to head a presidential Commission on Election Integrity, a panel which immediately began seeking the social security numbers of U.S. voters and generating other bad publicity that prompted Trump to disband the group before it ever met.

Naturally, the Kansas voter roll purge prompted a lawsuit arguing violation of both the Equal Protection Clause and the National Voter Registration Act. And U.S. District Chief Judge Julie Robinson was willing to hear Kobach prove his case. She directed him to produce evidence showing the need for the law.

It was a great opportunity. So many people have challenged the notion that there is wide voter fraud. Now, here was a chance for someone, under oath, who was familiar with the issue and had a research budget, to prove the case.

Unfortunately, in his home state of Kansas, Kobach has never been able to find but nine cases of voter fraud—none of which, incidentally, would have been prevented by his proposals for voter identification and other remedies. In a

state with a voting age population of 1,105,921, that means Kansas has a state voter fraud rate of just 0.0008.

So what did Judge Robinson find after Koback presented all his evidence?

“The court finds no credible evidence that a substantial number of noncitizens registered to vote under the attestation regime,” the judge wrote. “He has submitted evidence of 129 instances of noncitizen registration or attempted registration since 1999, but looking closely at those records reduces that number to 67 at most. Even these 67 instances are a liberal estimate because it includes attempted registrations after the … law was passed, a larger universe than what the Tenth Circuit asked the court to evaluate. Only 39 successfully registered to vote. And several of the individual records of those who registered or attempted to register show errors on the part of state employees, and/or confusion on the part of applicants. They do not evidence intentional fraud.”

This was the laboratory-ideal setting in which GOP officials could prove their case. And it was not done. This should be a message to officials, like Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske, who keep saying there is a major fraud problem. The problem that can be solved by voter identification laws is a political problem suffered by Republicans. Voter fraud is an infintesimal problem.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an average of 51 people are struck by lightning annually in the United States. As best we can tell, that is higher than the number of cases of voter fraud. So knock off the voter ID crap. Ω

A threshold issue for everyone I am so ashamed of my government. I wake up every morning thinking about the tormented faces of young immigrant children separated from their parents at the border and sent off to detention centers full of strangers as if they were criminals. It makes me physically sick, and it makes me angry and ashamed.

Nearly 2,000 children experienced this trauma between April 19 and the end of May, as the Trump administration implemented its new “zero tolerance” policy, arresting parents—or, as they prefer to call them—“alleged adult guardians,” pretending these parents are smuggling children across the border for nefarious purposes.

At press time, there are 10,773 children in custody, scattered through a hundred shelters in 14 states.

Last week, Attorney General Jeff Sessions cited the Bible as justification for isolating and warehousing children as if they were stray animals. As many pointed out, the Bible verses he used in this twisted rationalization are the same that have

been used to justify slavery and Nazis. It’s disgusting, it’s obscene, and it’s disgraceful.

Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King is another one who likes to pretend these migrants aren’t really families anyway. Last week, he told reporters he doesn’t believe the U.S. is under any obligation to keep migrant families together, saying, “I don’t see a reason to spend the money doing that.

And I don’t see how you do that without having a suite for every self-described family unit.”

President Trump first blamed Democrats for his own policy, despite all evidence that this is a Trump decision and most definitely not a law that was promulgated

by Democrats when they were in power. He tweeted, “The Democrats are forcing the breakup of families at the border with their horrible and cruel legislative agenda.” As usual, he makes no sense. His pronouncements are clearly bold-faced lies.

By last weekend, Trump was insisting that the policy is actually part of a brilliant political strategy to get Democrats to

fund his multi-billion dollar border wall, acknowledging that he is consciously traumatizing young children to reach his political goals, using them as pawns in an absurd and immoral chess game.

Every Republican candidate in Nevada should be questioned every day about whether they support the president’s actions that are clearly damaging children and destroying families. It shouldn’t take courage to speak out against this travesty.

These Republicans must not be allowed to obfuscate or avoid taking a position. Voters deserve to know. So what do you say, Adam Laxalt? Wes Duncan? Alexis and Ira Hansen? Heidi Gansert? Jill Tolles? Lisa Krasner? Jill Dickman? Ben Kieckhefer?

Many of you have young children. What are you doing to stop this atrocity? Your silence is complicity.

The rest of us cannot become numb to this outrage. Here’s something we all can do. Attorney General Sessions is coming to Reno on Monday morning to speak at the National Association of School Resources

Officers. A protest is planned beginning at 8 a.m. outside the Peppermill. It’s one way to demonstrate against Trump and Republicans who are inflicting unconscionable pain on migrant families. For more details visit the Facebook page Reno Rejects Sessions’ Hatred.

There is so much to be ashamed of in this administration, such as the embarrassing grifter running the EPA, Scott Pruitt, who is full of schemes to enrich himself while he lets corporations pollute our environment and pocket the profits, or the ongoing efforts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, the latest devastating assault focused on the removal of the mandate to provide insurance without regard to pre-existing conditions, effectively taking away health insurance from hundreds of thousands of Americans. But this policy of separating young children from their parents is nothing less than cruel. It’s immoral. It’s evil.

What goes around

Net neutrality is an issue that came late to Nevada.

During the primary election campaign, Democrat Steve Sisolak portrayed his primary opponent Chris Giunchigliani as unethical and corrupt, saying she was “out for herself.” Sisolak even used a little logo on one of his mailings that bore a stylized “OUT FOR HERSELF” banner next to her photo.

On the day after the primary election, Republican nominee Adam Laxalt put an ad on the air titled, “Steve Sisolak: Just Another Politician Out For Himself.”

trump surrogates After publisher John Block, who owns the Toledo Blade and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, combined the editorial page operations of the two newspapers and made Keith Burris the editor of the two pages, the content started shifting right, as with an editorial that called charges of racism the “new McCarthyism.” Last week came the firing of Pittsburgh cartoonist Rob Rogers, after several of his cartoons poking fun at Donald Trump were killed.

Washington Post cartoonist Ann Telnaes, a Reno High School graduate, used her pen for writing for a change, to respond to the firing in a Post essay that read in part: “ ‘Oh, good lord.’ That was my reaction the day after the election of Donald Trump in November of 2016, when it dawned on me that I would be serving my year as president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists during the same time as the guy who wanted to ‘open up’ libel laws and weaken the First Amendment so he could sue journalists more easily. Instead of the usual loss of jobs for editorial cartoonists that a president of the AAEC has to address during his or her tenure, now I’d be dealing with a much more fundamental threat to our profession: a president of the United States who has no idea or respect for the institution of a free press and its role in a democracy. …

“I realize now I didn’t recognize this other danger of an authoritarian president: his enablers and the willing supporters who squash dissent and help attack the free press and subvert the Constitution. The fact that Trump will use any opportunity to spread lies and whip up hatred toward journalists only enables his powerful supporters in the media to do his dirty work for him.

In April, another disturbing example of journalistic manipulation was exposed when a video surfaced showing news anchors from 45 Sinclair-owned stations reciting word for word the same script criticizing the mainstream media and spouting the ‘fake news’ accusations that Trump uses in his diatribes. While Trump used the opportunity to blast its critics and offer his support for the ‘superior’ Sinclair Broadcasting, he hadn’t orchestrated this abuse of journalistic integrity. He didn’t have to; there were others willing to do it for him.

“Through satire, humor and pointed caricatures, editorial cartoonists criticize leaders and governments that are behaving badly. The purpose of an editorial cartoonist is to hold politicians and powerful institutions accountable—and we all know how little President Trump thinks he, his family or his sycophants should be held accountable. Rogers was the first American editorial cartoonist to lose his job as a result, but he won’t be the last. Trump has many ‘fixers.’”

Without net neutrality States try to replace federal rules With all campaigns in nevada’s primary election coming to a head on election eve—June 11—other news that day got overlooked, including this: Net neutrality ended that day.

It took time for the net neutrality issue to take hold in Nevada. In 2014, though the issue was highly evolved elsewhere, few activists in Nevada knew of it and fewer understood it.

“Not off the top of my head,” said Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada Director Bob Fulkerson in 2014, when asked if he knew of anyone championing the issue (“Nettled,” RN&R, June 12, 2014).

Nevada’s U.S. Sen. Dean Heller was working hard to get net neutrality repealed, and no one in Nevada seemed disturbed.

“Net neutrality goes against years of sound internet policy—led by both

Democrats and Republicans—to leave the internet virtually unregulated, that has ushered in an era of wonderful innovation and billions in private investment in infrastructure,” Heller said.

On Dec. 14, the Federal Communications Commission voted to repeal net neutrality rules adopted during Democratic primacy, which treated the internet like a public utility.

The effect of that FCC vote came on June 11. Nothing changed immediately, but then no one expected it to. As attorney Chad Marlow wrote in an essay posted on the website of ACLU of Nevada, “Almost certainly not, because the big telecoms that fought so hard to kill net neutrality are smarter than that.” Objectionable behavior by internet service providers (ISPs) right away would have fueled revival of neutrality.

It’s amazing what taking net neutrality away from Nevadans has done. There is now a “Nevada For Net Neutrality” Facebook page. Protests around the state have been held to fight repeal. Groups have formed to fight the negative impacts that repeal could impose on Latinos, the small counties, and others. Nevada politicians besides Heller have responded to the new grassroots interest.

Unfortunately, it all came so late in the game that it had little effect.

Votes from the Nevada congressional delegation fell into expected party stances—Republicans against net neutrality, Democrats in favor.

The issue has risen in the U.S. Senate race this year, with Republican Heller in the minority in the Senate, which voted to override the FCC vote and reinstate neutrality.

Heller’s Democratic opponent, Jacky Rosen, signed a discharge petition on May 21 to force a bill restoring neutrality out of committee for a floor vote. That petition is still about 50 signatures short.

“Undoing net neutrality will hurt our economy and will make it harder for startups and Americans to conduct their business, stifling innovation and growth,” Rosen said in a prepared statement.

“Access to free and open internet service providers is especially important for Nevadans living in rural communities.”

With the passage of time, there has been growing recognition of the term net neutrality and increased understanding of what it means. It requires that governments and internet service providers handle all data equally, without imposing higher prices or otherwise treating anyone different for different methods of data delivery. When the web is neutral, a homemaker’s information travels at the same speed as Citicorp’s. After meeting his wife in Los Angeles in 2003, they moved to Reno not long afterward while she attended medical school at the University of Nevada, Reno. He met another Jewish veteran selling firearms under his own small Federal Firearm License from home, and the two made plans to go into business together.

“I ended up opening a store, and he ended up retiring,” Oren said.

I told Oren that I was ignorant about gun ownership, and that I was hoping to gain some firsthand knowledge by sitting in on his next CCW class. Not only was I interested in the process of earning a permit, but I also wanted to learn from the others in class their motivations for getting CCWs. After I sensed some initial skepticism on his part, he told me to come back in a few days for the class, but that I wouldn’t be taking part in the live-fire part of the test, as I didn’t have my own gun or safety equipment.

I felt that was fair enough, so I thanked Oren and left.

Actively listen In the endless deluge of statistics, political jockeying and blame that accompanies news of a shooting, the civilized consensus usually returns to this—people with

opposing ideologies need to actively listen to each other. I admit, while in college a few years ago I would have never even considered patronizing a gun store—my political sensibilities and family culture meant it was a matter of principle for me.

But after several frustrating years of failing to find common ground with pro-gun ideologues, I realized that if I actually had a progressive mindset, I wouldn’t just listen to opposing arguments, I would supplement my understanding with cultural knowledge—in this case, gun culture.

On the day of the class, eight applicants arrived for the classroom portion before traveling to the county shooting range later in the day. The group was relatively varied in terms of age, race and gender, which Oren told me was fairly typical of his classes.

Joseph Anson and Shawn Welches were two of the youngest attendees that day, both 25 years old. Anson works in automotive repair and moved to Reno from California recently, while Welches has lived in Northern Nevada his entire life. They came from fairly different family backgrounds and were looking to acquire their CCWs for mostly different reasons.

“Family’s always had them for as long as I can remember—as long as history goes back, we’ve always had guns,” Anson said.

Anson estimates that his family’s collection of guns holds 18 to 25 firearms, saying he wouldn’t call it a “huge” collection. After leaving what he felt were draconian laws and skyrocketing home prices in California, he said he’s happy to take advantage of the freedoms offered in Nevada.

“Living in California, it’s always been almost impossible to get something like that,” Anson said. “Out here, I finally have some money to get a gun, or to get my own gun, and I’m finally able to get one with out going through a bunch of hoops.”

Welches, a native of Sparks, mostly enjoyed paintball and a Daisy BB gun from his father as his childhood exposure to guns.

Neither of his parents owns a gun, he said.

“My mom is actually from China, Qianghai—she’s not into that stuff,” Welches said. “She’s not against guns— she’s just not for guns. Like, she wouldn’t own one, but she has no issue with me owning them.”

Welches believes he also has a duty to protect his fiancée and two children in a town and community he sees as growing increasingly dangerous.

“I know people who grew up in Reno, and I’ll call it the Reno Way,” said Welches. “It’s like, we’re friendly, we love our neighbors, we talk to everyone, we help each other—and we’re losing that in this city.”

Incidents like the Las Vegas shooting last October or the robbery of the gun store Sparks Black Rifle in May are pressing examples of his fears, Welches said.

“It doesn’t bother me if 50 percent of the Washoe County population had CCWs— and they don’t—because I know that in order to obtain one, you’ve had to be vetted and you have to have a clear criminal history.”

Welches and Anson both prefer rifles for recreational purposes and agree that owning a smaller, more easily misplaced handgun comes with greater responsibilities. However, they also feel like open carrying could make them a target in an active shooter situation, necessitating their CCWs. Oren told me that his is a fairly intensive course, and hinted that some of the other instructors in the area might not be as exhaustive. He said he offers the class because he is “bored”—“this shop is my retirement, not my livelihood,” he told the class at one point—but he feels a sense of accomplishment in helping people to not be victimized, mentioning women whom he said have come to take the class after surviving sexual assault.

The written material took us about five hours to get through. As Oren presented slide after slide, covering the legal and social aspects of using a gun for defense, I felt like I was learning something valuable.

He explained proper safety and stance techniques, parts of the gun and cartridge; there was even a chapter on the emotional and societal outcomes to expect from shooting someone, even in self-defense.

I tried to pay particular attention to the terminology, of which there was plenty.

Listening to gun advocates parse the definitions of “negligent discharge” versus “accidental discharge,” or that “AR” stands for “Armalite” and not “Assault Rifle”—there is no legal definition of “assault rifle” I was told multiple times—has often infuriated me: How can we be splitting hairs about “clips” and “magazines” when people who don’t even care are getting shot anyway?

In the clinical setting of the classroom, however, I could see that these terms weren’t just jargon. Plenty of subtle mechanical nuances influence the proper nomenclature, and when

miscommunication can put lives on the line—it pays to be precise. It still struck me, though, that some of the conservative outrage to botched gun terminology strongly resembles the liberal reaction to a term “not being PC.” The remainder of Oren’s class was punctuated by real-life examples from his military career, and some disarming drills in which I played his would-be assailant because I “hadn’t signed a waiver,” he joked.

After lunch, the applicants were expected to meet Oren at the county range on Pyramid Highway for the shooting portion of the test.

A certain on-target percentage out of 25 to 30 shots is necessary to meet the state requirement. Oren requires everyone to shoot 50.

Marina Monroy, a 27-year-old medical assistant and mother of four, only recently brought guns into her home, but has spent time at the range with her husband as part of an emerging family gun culture.

“It was mainly in the past couple of years where my husband was interested in getting a gun for personal use and self defense,” Monroy said. “It actually became a hobby for him, and in the past couple of years, I’ve been more exposed to the guns through my husband.”

They both committed to learning more about personal defense after two crimes occurred in their neighborhood. Monroy decided she would get her CCW to carry her gun while her husband works out of town and she stays home with kids. She bought her gun three months ago and considers Oren’s class her first formal firearms training.

“I like learning the right way, not hearsay,” Monroy said. “I think [we] got more of the information from the beginning from friends before we even started asking them like, ‘Hey, what was the process like? What do you guys do as far as gun safety or gun training?”

With their young children in the house, Monroy and her husband are conscious of the dangers posed by unsafe storage practices, and always keep the guns unloaded and locked. As both of her parents came from Mexico, Monroy had minimal exposure to guns growing up—but intends to make education a priority in keeping her kids safe around guns into adulthood as well.

“We actually have taken the kids out, just for them to be familiar with what a gun—how much of an impact it actually has,” Monroy said. “Video games do not provide a real-life scenario of what a gun can actually do.”

Part of the new gun culture she’s establishing for her family, though, entails listening to her children’s responses to what they witness at the range and at home.

“I have had my children say, ‘I’m not comfortable touching a gun,’ so I’m happy that I’m not going to force something on my children,” Monroy said. “I’m happy that they’re able to provide that information to me.”

Hard rules In fact, most of the gun owners I spoke with seemed to equate firearm safety with some sort of family tradition, including Sheriff Chuck Allen, who was elected as Washoe County Sheriff in 2014 on a pro-gun platform.

“We had some very hard rules; when my father spoke, you listened,” Allen said. “He

could leave a loaded gun on a desk, and we knew not to touch it—my sister and I.” Allen credits his family’s stern approach to gun safety, and his time spent in the Air Force and various law enforcement agencies with his own nearly lifelong comfort around firearms—extending that sentiment to his constituents as well.

“I’m a pro-gun guy, he said. “I believe if you are a firearm enthusiast, whether you want a firearm for sporting, protection, home safety—you should have the ability to do that. From a law enforcement officer’s perspective, we look at all citizens through our officer safety measures as somebody [who] may have a weapon already. So it doesn’t bother me if 50 percent of the Washoe County population had CCWs—and they don’t—because I know that in order to obtain one, you’ve had to be vetted and you have to have a clear criminal history.”

I mentioned to Allen that having a supportive family culture isn’t one of the minimal qualifications for owning a CCW, and in a time where we see violent, disaffected young shooters seemingly lacking familial oversight, I wondered if gun-rights enthusiasts would welcome laws mandating proficiency and knowledge before any gun purchases are made.

After spending their shots at their statemandated human silhouette target, almost everyone on the roster had passed at the end of the day. I left the range with the others feeling empowered. I hadn’t met any crazed gun nuts, only men and women with an earnest interest in protecting their families.

I felt like I left better prepared for not only what types of firearms I might see—or not see—in public, but how to better relate to the people them, too.

While I now better understand the process of buying and using a firearm, and I’m proud to have confronted some of my prejudices against guns and their owners, I still don’t think I’ll ever own a gun. More than one person described guns to me as “the great equalizer” during my time with the Maccabee crew. But on the other end of the range that day, I saw a citizen firing his own AR-15.

Listening to the fast, incredibly loud “bang” of the long rifle, the chorus of handgun fire from our group sounded like popguns in comparison.

I understood the reasons I had heard for owning and carrying a gun, from family traditions to politics and protection. But I still wasn’t sold personally—not enough, at least, to warrant the added responsibility, and potential liability, of carrying a gun. Ω

Allen believes that self-education is one of the duties of any prospective gun-owner, and laws that seek to regulate or preemptively alter the purchasing conditions for regular citizens aren’t as effective as holding unsafe gun owners personally responsible for their actions.

Oren grapples with his beliefs from time to time as well. During the course, he explained that, constitutionally, no one should need a permit to protect themselves— but, professionally, he believes you must be trained to be an effective gun owner.

“It’s a hard one, because from the business side, you want to sell everybody anything, and on the other side … I sleep good at night,” Oren said. “At the end of the day, it’s my prerogative, as the shop owner, to decide who I want to sell [to] and who I don’t want to sell [to].”

Oren has declined to sell to certain customers in the past, and at the range that day, I watched him deftly snatch a loaded gun from the hands of a student not following his instructions—the kind of decisive action meant to prevent the worst before it happens.

n March 26, the City of Reno’s Historical Resources Commission issued a press release announcing it had begun seeking nominations for its annual historic preservation awards. In the news that week, the topic of historic preservation was already hot. Three mid-century modern motels—the El Ray Motel, the Keno and the Star of Reno—had been demolished only days before.

In the days following the city’s May 18 announcement of the 2018 Preservation Award recipients, preservation again made local news, this time with stories focused on the University of Nevada, Reno’s Gateway District. Richard Bryan—who’s held posts as U.S. senator and Nevada governor—had just announced that the 19th century neighborhood was on his nonprofit preservation

organization’s list of “Nevada’s 11 most endangered places.”

In Reno, history often earns headlines when it is under threat. Such has been the case with the city’s mid-century motels and the Victorian-era Queen Anne homes of UNR’s Gateway District—before those, the Virginia Street Bridge, and, before it, the Mapes Hotel and others.

The city’s 2018 Preservation Awards did not make the news, but, interestingly, two of this year’s award recipients are what one might call “newsmakers,” and the award they received surprising enough to be newsworthy.

Wall of silence Plenty of locals are likely to have heard of muralists Joe C. Rock and Erik Burke. Each is responsible for dozens of works gracing walls throughout midtown and downtown.

And each declined to be interviewed for this

article—Burke with a polite but firm refusal, Rock after some hedging on a possible interview time.

In the past, both men have given interviews to local media—including several times with this newspaper—answering questions about things like inspirations and past illegal graffiti work. But neither, so far, has publicly discussed winning a historic preservation award for recent mural work they did together and individually. Of course, it may seem self-explanatory. Burke and Rock have each skillfully rendered the likenesses of historical figures on walls in Reno in the past. And 2016, they collaborated on an impressive Artown project, during which they painted portraits of Nevada icons along the east wall of Junkee Clothing Exchange. Today, passersby are still greeted by the oversized faces of Frederick DeLongchamps, Dot So La Lee, Wovoka, Jeanne Weir, Jack Johnson, Sarah Winnemucca and Mark Twain.

Many of their works definitely speak to local history—but do they actually amount to historic preservation?

“Are these artists worthy of a preservationist award?” wrote Sharon Honig-Bear in her nomination letter to the HRC. “I think so.

Not only are they informing the public and encouraging inquiry about Reno—but they are helping preserve and increase the worth of the buildings that they paint. Knowledge and neighborhood enhancement—to me, both qualities worthy of recognition.”

Over the wall Since 1997, the Historical Resources Commission has issued awards for work done to preserve and restore historical residential and commercial buildings and for local historical projects—usually things like books, documentaries and exhibitions. Honig-Bear, who is chair of the Reno Arts and Culture

Commission and secretary for the Historic Reno Preservation Society, said that 2018 was the first time something as unconventional as murals had been nominated in the historical projects category.

“I don’t know that anybody else would have thought of nominating them, other than me,” she said.

And she can see why. There are plenty of people who think altering the historical appearance of a building is inconsistent with preservation. In some ways, Honig-Bear agrees with them. In an ideal world, she said, historical buildings wouldn’t have murals.

“But this isn’t the ideal world, and I think at this point, they also do enhance [the buildings] and tell a story,” she said, adding that there’s also support to suggest that murals can

help preserve neighborhoods from graffiti.

“The conventional wisdom is that a building that is artfully painted—that other taggers will respect that building and not do any further damage to it,” she said.

She also appreciates that Burke and Rock’s murals bring both art and history to the streets.

“You don’t have to go up to the university or to an art gallery or someplace less accessible,” she said. “It’s right out there for everyone to question, wonder, appreciate—I like that part of it.”

As a member of the city’s community development team, Associate City Planner Jeff Borchardt does work with the HRC and said he can see both perspectives.

“I personally think that historic structures, historic gardens, things like that, are works of art themselves,” he said. “A lot of them have detailed woodwork and craftsmanship that, you know, you just don’t see these days … and, to me, it’s just as important as a nice painting, a nice sculpture.”

But, he said, a part of historic preservation is keeping the public interested in history, and he can see why people would want to acknowledge Burke and Rock for their roles in this.

“Historic preservation is not just about built structures,” Borchardt said. “It’s also about what happened in the community. And I think that’s one of the things they were talking about. … And that’s one thing that

Concrete thoughts Häsler Gómez A patch of nicely manicured grass is mostly blocking the entryway to the Serva Pool Gallery, a garage-like structure behind the Holland Project’s main building. A section of freshly painted white picket fence, a clear symbol of domestic utopia stopped in its tracks, lies on the grass.

There’s no question that the grass patch is part of a sculpture installation. But the question each viewer needs to quickly answer is: “Do I step on it to enter the gallery?” It’d be hard to get in otherwise.

Inside, two “walls,” demarcated by lines of pink string, don’t take up much volume, but the planes that they make up block off most of the room, bringing up another question: “Should I walk right through them?”

Normally, gallery rules say no, but there’s not much room to move around if you count those strings as barriers.

If over-examining simple choices about where to step leaves viewers feeling a little awkward, they’re in exactly the headspace the artist, Häsler R. Gómez, intended.

Gómez, who graduated from University of Nevada, Reno in 2017 with degrees in psychology and fire arts, is an immigrant.

His mother has been deported back to Guatemala, and he lost his DACA status right around graduation time. For six months, until his status was restored, he worked under the table in construction.

Gómez said that, after Trump’s election, he felt compelled to address the politics that affected his life so directly.

“But I was always very trepidatious about it, because I didn’t want to make, you know, ‘angry liberal’ art,” he said. “I wanted it to speak in a different way, not 18

just yelling at people or preaching to the choir.” He also brings in other timely topics.

“I’m really interested in gender,” he explained. In art school, he researched what he called “the dude-isms of minimalism,” the blunt, confrontational sense that the sculptural object you’re looking at “is what it is. There’s nothing else there.”

Just as he uses tightly edited arrangements of cinder blocks, drywall mud and tar to contextualize theoretical notions of gender constructs, he also uses those same materials to examine something more practical—gender relations within his family.

“I’ve always been interested in the idea of male silence—my relationship with my father, and his with his father,” Gómez said.

“Especially in the Latino population, you don’t talk about your feelings. You don’t talk about what you’re going through.”

“This one is called ‘Unspoken Papa,’” he said, pointing to one of two 2D pieces in his show. “I blindfold myself, and I put earplugs in, and I place a writing utensil in my mouth, and I try and write.”

“I’m also a writer and poet,” he said.

When writing, he runs into spots where language can’t quite capture something, and his artwork picks up where words leave off.

Gomez has a lot to say—and he takes his time distilling his observations about immigration and gender down into concise, refined expressions. His work reads like a long-labored-over poem that packs a lifetime into a line. But he hopes it’s not so resolved that it answers all of the questions it raises too neatly.

“I don’t want it to be this thing where you get it instantly, and then you can leave,” he said. “I want it to haunt you in a way.” He hopes that if you see it again in a year, you’ll notice something new. Avengers: Infinity War

“Another Starbucks? Are you serious? How many can one town have?”

Save the world After a 14-year hiatus, the Parr family returns for more superhero shenanigans in Pixar’s Incredibles 2, a sequel that continues the zippy, funny spirit of the original. It’s not as good as the first, but it still finds a ranking near the top of Pixar’s best and is the company’s best sequel since Toy Story 3.

The film picks up where the last one left off, with a criminal named Underminer (ever-present Pixar voice John Ratzenberger) looking to cause some early movie trouble and teen Violet Parr (Sarah Vowell, reprising her role, even though she’s well past her teens) meeting a boy.

Superheroes remain somewhat in hiding, but rich tycoon Winston Deavor (Bob Odenkirk) is looking to change that. Winston hatches a plan to get superheroes back in the limelight, and that plan involves Elastigirl/Helen (Holly Hunter) on a crazy new motorbike fighting crime and gaining publicity. While she’s out getting her superhero groove back, Mr. Incredible/Bob (Craig T. Nelson) must stay at home and take care of the kids, including Violet, Dash (Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack (Eli Fucile).

To recap the children’s powers, Violet can go invisible and produce force fields, and Dash is really fast. Jack-Jack, as we found out near the end of the original, has emerging powers, and now Bob witnesses them all.

Jack-Jack can do a lot of things, including reproduce himself, journey to other dimensions, catch fire like the Human Torch and turn himself into a demon baby. The Jack-Jack subplot gets a lot of laughs, most of them out of the baby’s sheer amusement with himself.

Of course, Bob’s superpowers will be needed again, and the whole family will be back in play to save the world from comical baddies. While the film feels a bit repetitive at times, the likes of Hunter, Nelson and Samuel L. Jackson returning as Frozone keep it consistently entertaining.

And writer-director Brad Bird returns as the voice of fashion guru Edna Mode, who becomes

Auntie Edna when Jack-Jack is in dire need of a babysitter. Make no mistake, it’s Jack-Jack and his cookie-craving craziness that steal the show this time.

As with the original, it’s the little nuances that make Incredibles 2 so much fun. I still love how Elastigirl’s curved mouth when she talks is a direct ode to Hunter’s actual face, and Violet’s teen angst continues to be hilarious animated fare. The original Incredibles was groundbreaking for its onscreen action, and this one continues in that tradition. There’s also a memorable new villain in Screenslaver, an entity that hypnotizes people into submission via video screens. No doubt, this is a nod to our modern-day attachment to screened devices.

In a nice piece of stunt casting, the character of Rick Dicker, voiced in the original by the late Bud Luckey, has been recast with the voice of Jonathan Banks. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fans know Banks as Saul’s (Odenkirk) henchman in those shows, so having both their voices in a movie is neat stuff for geeks.

It’s a little odd that the sequel-happy Pixar took so long to give the Parrs another chapter.

The reason for the wait falls squarely on Bird’s shoulders. Bird created the characters, and Pixar gave him autonomy when it came to giving them another chapter. Evidently, Bird wasn’t in any kind of rush, and we might have to wait another decade-plus for another chapter.

That’s OK. While the Incredibles are clearly ripe for many stories, one great chapter (the original) and another very good one (this installment) make for a nice complete franchise and a surefire good time for everybody in the family this summer moviegoing season. Ω

The Avengers team takes a swift kick to their remarkably muscular collective ass via a super baddie named Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, likely the best big blockbuster time you will have at the cinemas this summer. The last “Avengers” movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron, was a misguided, boring dud. This third installment—the first of a two-parter—lets it all hang out with a massive collection of characters and a scary sense of impending doom. There are many, many storylines at play servicing many superheroes and villains. Infinity War feels like the Magnolia of Marvel movies in that it takes all of those storylines and balances them in a cohesive, vastly entertaining manner. It’s over two-and-a-half hours long, but it’s never even close to boring. The balancing act is performed by directors Anthony and Joe Russo, the team that made Captain America: Civil War such a winner. The magic of that film carries over into this one, which picks up directly after the end of Thor: Ragnarok. That film ended with Thor and his fellow Asgardians feeling somewhat triumphant after losing their planet after defeating emo Cate Blanchett. A mid-credits scene saw their ship coming face to face with one owned by the mighty Thanos (Josh Brolin). In one of the great performance-capture achievements, Brolin is the best of monsters, one who manages just enough of a sensitive side that he falls well short of stereotype.

Hereditary

The happily profane superhero party continues with Deadpool 2, a sequel that brings the anarchic spirit of the original without necessarily blazing any new trails. Ryan Reynolds, who has experienced a career explosion thanks to this franchise—and, of course, his undeniable talents—continues to break the fourth wall, Ferris Bueller style. While the gimmick definitely leads to some good laughs, it does get to a point that feels a little too cute and repetitive. He winks at the audience so much, he must have some severe eyelid muscle strains. He’s gonna have an eyeball pop out. The film starts with Deadpool dejectedly blowing himself up, complete with a severed arm giving the finger.

Then it goes into flashback mode as Wade Wilson cleverly and smarmily tells us why he did such a thing. We also get a repeat of the “Wiseass Opening Credits” gag that got the original off to such a good start. This time, instead of Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning,” the credits roll to a brand new ballad from Celine Dion, so the stakes have definitely been raised. Directed

by David Leitch, one of the guys who directed John Wick, the film definitely ups the ante on the action front, with gun and swordfights that have some major zip to them.

A family gets their proverbial ass viciously, horrifically kicked in Hereditary, writer-director Ari Aster’s more-thanimpressive feature debut. This is a horror movie that will bruise your brain, make your blood run cold, and stay in your system well after you’ve left the theater. Toni Collette plays a woman dealing with the recent death of her mom, and that mom’s strange obsession with the supernatural. The sins of that mom eventually take their toll on her daughter and, consequently, her family. The movie is a ghost story, a demon story and a witch story rolled into one, with elements of The Witch, Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist and, yes, The Sixth Sense (that vibe owes a lot to the presence of Collette). It’s also one of the more powerful depictions of a family falling apart in recent years, making it an excursion into horror with an extra layer of depth. The creeping dread factor starts early in Hereditary and never lets up. Aster proves to be a master of atmospheric scares, relying less upon jolts and gore, and more upon lingering shots in dark corners where you can sort of make out a ghost staring at you. Everything works up to a frightening puzzler of a finale that might have you initially asking, “WTF?” but eventually thinking, “Oh … that’s some messed-up shit right there.”

Life of the Party

The great Melissa McCarthy suffers the Ben Falcone curse yet again in Life of the Party, a shitty Back to School rip-off, which makes it double shitty because Back to School sucked. Falcone is McCarthy’s husband, and he has now directed her in three movies, all bad. The duo worked together on Tammy, one of McCarthy’s worst films, and The Boss, the best of their work together but still pretty bad.

McCarthy plays Deanna, a frumpy, middle-aged mom with a daughter, Maddie (Molly Gordon), going into her last year in college. Within minutes of dropping their daughter off at school, her husband (Matt Walsh) dumps her for a real estate agent played by the actress from Modern Family (Julie Bowen). A dejected Deanna decides to enroll in school—a shockingly easy process in this film—and finds herself not only attending college alongside her daughter but hanging out with her and her sorority sisters.

She’s considered a square at first, but a quick makeover during a party in the bathroom has her emerge as the coolest new girl on campus with awesome hair. What follows are a bunch of predictable gags involving college life and McCarthy struggling to make material well beneath her talents go somewhere.

Solo

Upgrade

After one of the more tumultuous productions in recent film history, Solo: A Star Wars Story makes it to screens, completed by a different director than the ones who started the gig. About a year ago, director Ron Howard took over for directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street) after executive producer Kathleen Kennedy showed them the door. Howard took over when principal photography was near completion, but then wound up reshooting 70 percent of the movie. The finished film definitely feels like more than one director had their hands in the pot. It’s sloppy and tonally challenged, and scenes crash into each other at times, killing an otherwise brisk and fun pace. There are moments in this movie that feel like they were shoehorned into the plot to fix a story problem.

OK, so there are some definite negatives at play here, but there are plenty of positives. The positives aren’t enough to keep Solo from being one of the weaker Star Wars films, but they are enough to keep it recommendable and a relatively good time at the movies. Diehard Star Wars fans, years from now, will probably shrug and say “Eh, it was OK” when asked to reexamine their feelings. In the end, Solo will probably fall somewhere in between The Star Wars Holiday Special and Revenge of the Sith on the favorite Star Wars film scale. Alden Ehrenreich, a likeable actor, steps into the role of Han Solo, a sacred role thanks to Harrison Ford. While Ehrenreich puts an OK spin on the character, he’s far from remarkable. Donald Glover, however, is perfection as a young Lando Calrissian. He needs his own movie.

Some well-choreographed action scenes can’t help this low budget sci-fi thriller make the grade. Logan Marshall-Green stars as Grey, a muscle car-loving geek who fixes classic autos for rich people in the future.

After he and his girlfriend (Betty Gabriel) have an accident in her self-driving car (I just don’t know how I will ever be able to get into one of those things), Grey is left paralyzed and hungry for revenge. One of Grey’s clients, a tech giant named Eron (Harrison Gilbertson) has a solution: an implant called Stem that will bridge the gap between his brain and severed spinal cord. What he doesn’t tell Grey is that Stem will internally speak to him with a voice like Hal’s from 2001: A Space Odyssey and that when Stem takes over his body, he will have ninja skills. This sounds like it would be fun, but many of the performers in this movie seem like they’ve never been in front of a camera before. It also lacks a much needed sense of humor. Now, if they made an Upgrade sizzle reel, a 15-minute summary of all the cool fight scenes and chases in the movie, that would be worth a viewing on YouTube. Unfortunately, this movie is a lot longer than that, and most of it is melodramatic and tough on the ears.

In knead Pizzava is smack in the heart of midtown with a nanobrewery next door in perfect symbiosis. The restaurant has seating for perhaps 20. On a recent visit, my group snagged three small tables and attempted conversation despite the din of pounding house music.

Maybe I’m getting old.

We began with several medium specialty pies ($13.99), including a Turkish Delight with feta, tomato, black olive, green pepper, mozzarella and marinara; a Steak Bomb with American cheese, thin-sliced steak, onion, mushroom, green pepper, mozzarella and marinara; a BBQ Chicken and Bacon with grilled chicken breast, bacon, green pepper, onion, mozzarella and barbecue sauce; and an Alfredo Chicken with chicken, spinach and alfredo sauce.

The crust was thin yet crispy and had decent flavor. The Turkish pizza was a bit lacking in feta.

The Alfredo sauce was creamy, though lacking in garlic, but the spinach added flavor and color. The barbecue pie was pretty good and had just enough bacon to for us to know it was there. The Steak Bomb was indeed bomb. The cheeses worked with the meat and veggies—a solid substitute for a Philly cheesesteak. Not a slice of that bomb pizza made it home.

A large Backyard pizza ($15.99) with pepperoni, sausage, onion, green pepper, mushroom, mozzarella, marinara and added tomato and black olive ($1.50 extra each) was just OK. The crust was so thin that the crispness was lost, and we had to roll it up. Ordering smaller pizzas may be better if you want crispiness throughout.

A Bolls Calzone ($16.99) was large enough for two or three people to share, with sliced meatballs and mozzarella and a side of marinara sauce. Unlike other pizza turnovers I’ve had in the past, this beast was literally a 15-inch pie folded in half—a bit flat in appearance—with extra cheese tossed on top and

nicely browned. It was thankfully sliced into eight strips—perfect for dipping in sauce. But I wished the sauce had more herb and garlic flavor. The meatballs were tender, if a little under-seasoned, and there was plenty of cheese.

An order of chicken wings ($9.99 for 10) was served unadorned with a choice of hot, Buffalo or barbecue sauce on the side, as well as cups of blue cheese and ranch dressing. While I consider it odd to see untossed wings, they were crispy and moist, and a quick dunk in Buffalo sauce did the trick. Some of the places in town serving soggier wings might want to try this trick to preserve crispiness.

An order of cheesy bread with marinara ($6.99) was better than your average pizza sans sauce. And one of my friends just had to have some garlic balls with marinara and cinnamon balls with vanilla icing ($5.99 each).

The bits of crispy, baked dough with butter and garlic confirmed my suspicions about the blandness of the marinara and alfredo sauces; in lieu of real garlic, they were dusted with garlic powder and disappointingly bland without the tomato sauce. If you put garlic in the name, I’d better taste some genuine stinking rose. The cinnamon balls—once dunked in icing— more or less hit the cinnamon roll and dessert marks.

There was also a dessert pizza available with Nutella and coconut, which appealed to none of us.

I’m sure it’s wonderful if you’re into that sort of thing. My last thought was wishing I’d noticed the “20 percent off first online order” notice. I should have used my smartphone instead of ordering at the counter. Ω

Name that bar Downtown and midtown are full of colorful neon— but have you ever noticed that they’re full of colorful bar names, too? Ever wondered where those names came from? There are enough curious, quirky or inexplicable bar names in town that you could write an entire typonomy—that’s a taxonomy for place names. We haven’t committed to a leatherbound volume of Reno bar names just yet, but we did look into a few popular ones.

In between receiving deliveries and refilling patrons’ drinks, Shenanigan’s owner Julie Mitchell opened a file folder and took out an oversized postcard that contained a brief history of the bar. The area code on the postcard was still “702,” which means it was probably printed some time before 1998, when Northern Nevada switched to “775.”

“I’m not sure if this is 100 percent true,” she warned. As this postcard tells it, the pub’s heavy, wooden bar comes from the Grand Ballroom of the Castle Shenanigan, outside Southampton, England.

Legend has it that a Portuguese captain brought it to America in 1850, that it was used at taverns in Virginia City and Carson City, then brought to Reno and refurbished “to its former state of glory.”

But Mitchell was right to recommend taking the story with a grain of salt. The postcard cites no sources, and an internet search on such a castle and such a bar turned up nothing whatsoever, so it seems likely that the story was the result of, well, a shenanigan. In any case, this super-friendly neighborhood pub, at 77 W. Plumb Lane, is a great place to trade tall tales over good food and pints of just about any kind of beer on any given day or night.

Foxy Olive at 220 Mill St. has low ceilings, red walls, metal in the jukebox, Miller on the menu, and a name that might seem to promise coattails and furs.

Bartender Andrew Warbington said that when the original owners opened Foxy Olive in 2007, they envisioned “a fancy cocktail bar.” This block of Mill Street was—and still is—more about residential motels and convenience stores than upscale watering holes, but, through a handful of owners, the name has stuck.

Foxy Olive, it turns out, has some distinct advantages over bars in Reno’s upscale neighborhoods: refreshingly cheap drinks, welcoming service, easy parking, and Lime Bikes on every nearby block. And while not the “fancy cocktail bar” it was initially conceived as, they will, in fact, make you a fancy cocktail.

On a recent night at 5 Star Saloon, a patron offered this definition: “A goldstar is a lesbian who hasn’t had sex with men.” But no one present at that moment was sure what “5 Star” meant.

Former owner Shannon Dobbs had some history to share, though. He said that the bar started in 1971 as Paul’s Lounge II. Original owner Bill Hegy, who has passed away, told Dobbs, before selling him the business in 2007, that he and four others partnered up “some time in the ’80s” and renamed it 5 Star Saloon. Dobbs figures the owners considered themselves five stars of empowerment and self-expression—but that is not confirmed by any readily available data.

The “saloon,” part of the name might be a little misleading. It’s not a bar with swinging front doors.

Dobbs described it like this: “5 Star is the longestrunning continually operational gay bar in Nevada, and is the original starting point for both the Silver Dollar Court drag group and the International Gay Rodeo Association.” It remains an incredibly inclusive place that’s also among Reno’s favorite, late-late-late-night afterparty venues. In summer, it stays open past sunrise. Ω

When Luke Wynn was a kid, his mother bought him a snare drum. He’s been playing drums ever since.

Wynn grew up attending church. As an adult, after going through a divorce, he found what he describes as an “intimate relationship with God.” Today, the 25-yearold has found a way of marrying his love of drums and hip-hop with his faith.

Wynn was born in Sacramento and moved to Reno when he was 17.

In 2007, when he was a teenager, his father started working on a CD. Wynn and his brother were part of the process. They were in the studio every day helping to mix the album. It was during that process that Wynn realized his own interest in making music.

After his family moved to Reno in 2010, he started singing and rapping. His music has a harmonic quality that sets it apart from other rappers.

“If I had to admit to emulating anyone, it would be my Grammy Award-winning auntie, Juanita Wynn,” he said. “She is a singer, but her style, in how she stacks her vocals and creates her hooks, is one thing that helps me to create hooks and work out harmonies.”

Wynn’s faith plays a huge role in his music—and it’s helped fuel his selfconfidence. In “Nobody,” a track from his latest album Wynn’sDay, he sings, “Since I got God, please tell me who I need, I don’t need nobody.”

He also tackles themes of love and relationships, racial issues, depression, and his path to success.

“I’m at the point where I draw power, strength, purpose and security through God in my music,” Wynn said.

Wynn has released several songs and EPs, which he said got little to no reception.

“I love music, but I hate the business and the marketing side,” he said.

But he said he’s prepared to put some effort into promoting his latest album.

“I am working on trying to get a tour started,” Wynn said. “I am working on more music soon, but I am not trying to get ahead of myself because I want this to be a really big project.”

Wynn hopes to play shows in Reno, Sacramento, the Bay Area, Southern California and Portland.

One hurdle he has had to overcome is the small hip-hop market Reno offers compared to other cities.

“It is a hurdle, but you are only limited to what your mind thinks,” Wynn said. “If you have the mentality of, ‘Well, if I was in this city I could do it,’ that doesn’t work. There are so many people who come from small cities and make it happen because they are driven to do it.”

Wynn said that he wants to find audiences out of town, too.

“One of my ideas is to use Reno as a home base, but try to do this internationally and globally and not be so focused on Reno,” Wynn said.

“Because you could be the best person in Reno, but if you go to Los Angeles or elsewhere, you are nothing.” Ω

Wouldn’t businesspeople be more impressed if he could keep a relationship going, even if it were with a plainer woman?

Your friend isn’t wrong—arm candy appears to be the Prada handbag of male competition.

Research by social psychologist Bo Winegard and his colleagues suggests that a man’s being accompanied by a modelicious woman functions as a “hardto-fake” signal of his status, as beautiful women “have the luxury of discriminating among a plethora of suitors.”

In the Winegard team’s experiments, men paired with attractive women were consistently rated as higher in status than the very same men when they were paired with unattractive women. In one part of the study, some men were assigned an attractive female partner. The men were told that they’d be conducting a survey out on campus with her and that they “were to act as if they and their assigned partner were in a happy relationship.”

These men were forced to choose between a group of men and a group of women to survey (and thus flaunt their hot female partner to). Interestingly, almost 70 percent of these guys chose to flaunt to other men. This isn’t surprising, considering how, as the researchers note, men are “largely” the ones who determine one another’s status (within a group of men). Of course, a man’s being seen as high-status by other men is ultimately a path to mo’ better babes—so your friend may basically be getting a twofer by showing off to other dudes.

I remember you saying not to remove all the hair, and I don’t want women to suspect I’m gay.

However, I’m wondering whether shaving my pits would help with my BO. Underarm stink comes from a specialized sweat gland. Your body has two kinds of sweat glands— eccrine and apocrine. Eccrine glands are the air conditioners of the body, producing sweat that’s pretty much just salty water to cool us off.

Apocrine glands, on the other hand, are scent glands, found mostly in the armpits and groin and around the nipples. Any smelliness emanating from the apocrine areas comes not from the sweat itself but from bacteria that move in to lunch on it.

It seems like shaving that pit hair (removing it entirely versus just trimming it) would make a difference, giving the bacteria far less of a, um, dining area.

Unfortunately, the studies on this are problematic—with too-small sample sizes (meaning too few participants to know whether the findings reflect reality or are simply due to chance).

What types of percussion will students learn about in the camp?

Emphasis is on marching percussion.

Marching percussion is usually broken into two pieces. You have the “battery,” … those are drums that have a head on them. … And the other half is what is typically called “the pit.” … That’s all the other percussion instruments— xylophones, marimbas, vibraphones, timpani, things that are too big to march with.

What’s a day at the camp like?

The percussion is actually only one of three parts of the camp. There’s also, completely unrelated to percussion, the drum major portion—the person that directs the band, in the front. They have a section of camp for drum majors to learn directing skills and stuff, and then there’s a leadership portion of the camp. And that is for drum majors, and it’s also for section leaders throughout the band. They could be a trumpet section leader or a clarinet section leader, and they can go and learn

different leadership skills as the camp progresses.

What makes this a good program?

The Yamaha Sounds of Summer camps happen all over the country, and they are always led by the best artists and musicians that are available. Aaron Hines [under whom percussionists will study this summer] is the executive director of Envision Performing Arts. … Their level of activity has varied over the last few years, but their ensembles have competed on the national level, or, technically, the world level. And it’s that kind of quality in educator that Sounds of Summer brings in. And the other side of things is just the behemoth that Yamaha is. In our industry, Yamaha is by far the biggest name in the entire music products world. No. 2 is a tenth the size of No. 1, so there’s no comparison.

This camp really makes these kids extra-prepared to compete at a peak level in high school competition. The very best kids at the high school level usually participate in these other ensembles— most closely, around here, is usually over in Northern California, where we have the Blue Devils drum and bugle corps out of Concord, and the Santa Clara Vanguard, and the Mandarins that are in Sacramento. We have, I would guess, 30 or 40 kids in Reno that are participating in those three groups.

That’s a really significant number when you understand that these groups are only 150-160 people strong.

For families weighing their summer music camp options, what should they know to help them decide whether this is the right camp for them?

This is fairly short but intensive. It’s a three-day camp. It doesn’t take too much time away from the fact that here in Washoe County we have a really short summer, which is really sad. As far as percussion portions of the camp are concerned, there’s really nothing at this level without traveling great distance to participate in. … We have the Lake Tahoe music camp that happens the week of the Fourth of July, which this does not conflict with. I’m sure we’ll have kids that do both.

That’s a resident camp, that you stay at all week long. This one is not. It is going to be a lot more affordable. Ω

Period.”), Ann Coulter (“These child actors weeping and crying on all the other networks”), Laura Ingraham (“detention centers are basically summer camps”) and Kellyanne Conjob (on this list just because) concerning the deplorable situation at the border where America has suddenly decided to go Sophie’s Choice on immigrants applying for asylum, I couldn’t help but flash back to Samantha Bee’s bold comment on Ivanka,

that juicy one involving fecklessness where Sam had to backtrack and apologize. Maybe Ivanka didn’t deserve that epithet at that time (I wonder if Daddy’s favorite girl will be wearing Gucci or Tom Ford for her Perp Walk?), but the Linda Blairesque torrents of green junk spewing forth from this quartet of crazy blond bat monkeys easily gains them entry into F.C. Stadium (and, hey, do Exorcist references still work?).

Make no mistake about it. It’s on the record. It’s provable. It’s demonstrable. This separation policy is not the law as set by Congress but a brand new policy announced by Attorney General Magoo in March, a policy with the full blessing of a delusional madman “president” who apparently trembles in bed fretting about the big bad thugs of MS-13 chopping off his little tadger with their big ole nasty machetes.

Meantime, the Pentagon released the following statement— “Consistent with President Trump’s commitment and in concert with our Republic of Korea ally, the U.S. military has suspended all planning for this August’s defensive ‘wargame’ (Freedom Guardian).”

In other words, Dum Dum just gave North Korea, China and Russia the very large gift that those three countries have wanted for years.

Mr. “Art of the Deal” gave it to them for free. For nothing. Kim Jong Un must still be pinching himself in disbelief. Or did he know all along that what Putin wants, Putin gets?

In other words, Trump just got played. Mr. “Negotiator” just got clowned. By Little Rocket Man! And

by Xi. And of course, as always, by Big Daddy Vlad, who is no doubt in a continuous non-stop giggle fit as he appreciates the endlessly excellent returns delivered by his Stooge Boy investment. Ω
