Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Nice, totally not-at-all controversial subject on the cover this week—sex education. Check out Kris Vagner’s feature story on page 11 for more about the battle in Washoe County about proposed changes to the sex ed curriculum.

Personally, I can still recall the giddy, embarrassed excitement I felt on elementary school sex ed days. This was here in Washoe County, but way back in ye olde 1980s. The classes were helpful. I remember they cleared up some misunderstandings I had about female anatomy based on what I had seen in Playboy magazines— which, for some strange reason, in those days, at least, presented women’s genitals as beginning and ending at the mons pubis.

And that seems as good a segue as any to an announcement that I haven’t yet made in this column: My fiancee, Margot Choltco, and I are expecting a baby. (We had sex—several times, as a matter of fact—in order to make the baby.

Education!) Hooray! We’re beyond excited. The baby is due Dec. 1, but could come before Thanksgiving. So, if I suddenly disappear from the paper, you can rest easy, knowing I’m off on Baby Island, soon to return with long, flowery, poetic ruminations on diaper smells and sleep deprivation.

(And the paper will be fine. The news will keep happening. The arts will keep happening. And my colleagues here are pros.)

Margot and I already have three wonderful kids between us—my son Clifford, and stepdaughters Josephine and Viktoria—but this will be our first baby with DNA from both of us. The horns, hooves and tail have not yet appeared on the ultrasounds.

Re “De facto automatics” (letters, Oct. 19): It certainly doesn’t matter to the Las Vegas 58 victims or their families what type of gun(s) were used, but it might be worth knowing that Paul Johnson writes “only the military and a few collectors own automatic weapons.” Not true at all! You or I or any non-felon who has not been involuntarily committed to a mental facility may buy a machine gun, with a $200 ATF registration fee and an extensive background check that can take up to 6 months as long as it was manufactured before May 19, 1986.

Your editor’s note says “The term assault weapon usually includes semi-automatic weapons.” Not so! The uneducated media begat this error. You can accurately call them “assault-style weapons.” It’s unfair to perpetuate a picture of madmen using “machine guns” on masses of people.

The message to take away is “Concealed Carry permitted guns are not being used in crimes.” There are almost no instances of “permit holders” being convicted of gun crimes.

PolitiFact: “Lawmakers, law enforcement officials and others widely refer to many semiautomatic weapons like the rifle used in Orlando and other mass shootings—which reload automatically but fire only once each time the trigger is depressed—as assault weapons. In a housing shortage, too Re “Freeway change coming” (news, Sept. 21): Pyramid/McCarran is a disaster to begin with. To avoid taking just six feet off Mrs. Lagomarsino’s property at the the northwest corner, 66 houses across the street were destroyed, creating a mass dislocation of families, cutting a huge swath through central Sparks, and impacting the tax rolls. All for what amounts to a minor throat widening with no grade separation or any other substantive improvement, while massively disrupting the commute for years.

Whatever “historic” aspects there are to this woman’s house, neither that structure nor its ambience would have been harmed by just carving a little bit off the front yard to create a right-turn lane.

Public Works calls for: 1. Exercising critical judgment 2. Being resolute 3. Managing effectively. RTC and NDOT failed on all three counts with this ill-conceived project.

Progress or just change?

Re “Air traffic uncontrol” (Let Freedom Ring, Oct. 19): Wow, so many inaccuracies. First, air traffic control (ATC) does not cancel flights.

The airline does. Next, comparing ATC in the U.S. to countries that have adapted privatized ATC functions is like comparing apples to oranges. The U.S. ATC system is the largest, most complex, yet safest in the world. The FAA has been hamstrung in achieving its modernization due to the mess that is known as modern-day politics, not any disfunction or unwillingness to modernize.

And then there’s this; According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, 80 percent of delays in the system today are caused by weather or airline mismanagement. This includes computer glitches, crew deployment schedules and mechanical issues. These issues will not be solved with the new corporation. Only 15 percent of all delays during that time period were due to issues with our air traffic system.

Bottom line—do we need to modernize?

Absolutely. Privatize? Not so much.

Goodbye, Fourth Street In 2011, my small business, Bootleg Courier Company, was looking for a home. We decided on a much-too-bigfor-our-needs 5,000-square-foot warehouse on East Fourth Street, next door to our friends at the Reno Bike Project.

Back then, Fourth Street was primarily inhabited by seedy bars and late-night clubs. I was attracted to the neighborhood, in part, by the industrial feel and the mixed inhabitants—varying socioeconomic backgrounds—coexisting together. It was similar to the neighborhoods in the Bay Area that I had left behind to start my business in Reno. In those cities, drug rehabs and sex shops existed next door to upscale coffee shops and boutique clothing stores. Fourth Street similarly felt like a place where anything was possible.

Our warehouse became home to working artists and took on the moniker Cuddleworks. The feeling of camaraderie was palpable. We produced one event each year. The space helped launch initiatives like KWNK Community Radio and Magpie Coffee, and was a project development space for the Holland Project, Fleischmann Planetarium, Great Basin Community Food Co-op, the Nevada Museum of Art, Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery, and more.

I was homeless in San Francisco for about a year in 2006-07. One of my biggest takeaways from that experience: In order for social services to be effective, they must be accessible. Reno has all of the ingredients to make this a reality. Because of the train trench, the City of Reno owns a significant amount of property in the middle of town.

There are no limitations to the centralization of services other than our own vision and priorities.

It saddens me that newcomers to Fourth Street are pushing to move social services. Business owners who capitalized on recession-era low property values to build their upscale businesses now want to eradicate anyone outside of their specific higher-end clientele.

This story is not a new one—progressive individuals and businesses move into old, dilapidated buildings in forgotten neighborhoods to realize their goals. Initially, they interact positively with the community that already exists there. Then, at some point, investors and developers take notice.

Together with Under the Rose Brewing and the Reno Bike Project, Cuddleworks helped produce Positively 4th Street—a project highlighting the positive attributes of our street. This event, intended to help secure needed infrastructure updates, also marked the beginning of the end to our time on Fourth Street.

What we can learn: Keep everything you do a secret.

Being proud of your neighborhood is understandable, but it could also do harm to the people living in that neighborhood. Purchase your space whenever possible. If there’s a way, find it. Always think about origin. Who was here before me? What was their life like? How can I honor them and their efforts? Am I contributing while being sensitive to history and neighborhood culture?

Goodbye, Fourth Street. I won’t soon forget you.

Father knows zip My first reaction was to laugh when I read the condescending opening line of a recent column in the Reno Gazette-Journal by economic development official Mike Kazmierski, declaring “Reno-Sparks is growing up.” I rolled my eyes as he compared Reno to a clumsy teenager, declaring that we need to stop sleeping and playing Xbox all weekend and start solving the challenges associated with his monumental efforts to diversify our economy and add jobs. After all, he shouldn’t be expected to do all the heavy lifting by himself.

As I read more, I was astonished by his ability to rationalize away all of us who disagree with his penchant for allocating our tax dollars for the purpose of luring already wealthy corporations to set up shop in our community. Kazmierski thinks those of us who question his policies and their negative effects on the Truckee Meadows in terms of affordable housing, a failing infrastructure, and overcrowded schools and roads need to get over our

“sky is falling” mentality and join his team. He’s been here six years now, you see, and look at all he has accomplished with his philosophy of “a rising tide lifts all boats.”

In Kazmierski’s mythical depiction of Reno, we’ve been mere children these last 149 years, but no worries, “we will be adults soon, and with that will come real adult challenges and real adult responsibility.” He gripes that we just need to get over our what’s-in-it-for-me? thinking and start believing we’re in this together.

Kazmierski ignores Reno’s rich history dating back to the mid-1850s when pioneers began residing in the valley, along with our boom-and-bust tendencies since Reno’s official founding in 1868. He skips right over Reno’s not-so-childlike culture of quickie marriage and divorce, and turns a blind eye to the vices of gambling, drinking and drugs that continually percolate under the surface of a city that does far too little to acknowledge or assist the addicted.

Since Kazmierski has only been here six years, he didn’t experience the boom period in the late ’70s when the MGM opened its doors. He didn’t witness how the pressure from explosive growth forced people out of their homes as housing costs escalated and public services struggled to keep up with the demand for assistance.

But who needs history when you have all of today’s answers? To accommodate the effects of the newest growth burst for which he gladly takes all the credit, Kazmierski wants us to “take on a challenge ... develop a plan, build a coalition and get it done.” Just listen to the adult in the room.

Kazmierski concludes his column with the patronizing attitude of a king lecturing his subjects, stating our “young community” should “acknowledge that it’s time to grow up.” This, from a man who has barely lived here long enough to know where to find the best Awful Awful burger. He’s no doubt salivating

at the prospect of rescuing another baby city after he’s finished saving us from ourselves.

The comments about Kazmierski’s column on social media were colorful and entertaining, but perhaps the best response come from long-time Reno resident Willie Puchert: “Since he is referring to us as children, I would tell Ward Cleaver up there that part of the ‘maturation process’ is (1) having developers pay impact fees instead of working folks and middle class always shouldering the burden of schools, roads and services, (2) our elected officials quit their addiction to giving corporate welfare to these companies who make all these promises but are never able to deliver and (3) ensuring responsible development that does not create detrimental environmental impacts that those poor folks in Lemmon Valley are experiencing.”

In other words, Mr. Kazmierski, grow up, why don’t you? Ω

The new age The father of our country was a slave holder. He was a land speculator. His legacy is still that of a great man, a man of immense ability and noble heart.

He refused the blandishments of power. He spurned those who would make him king. He voluntarily stepped down after two terms in office. He is admired as the American Cincinnatus, the farmer who left the plow to save Rome by leading its legions to victory, but, when victory was won, returned back to his farm and a simple life.

When George Washington finished his second term, he gave a farewell address. It’s about 6,000 words long, and is graded for an eighteenth grade reader. In other words, a graduate student. Yet his words were standard reading in 19th century common schools.

Today, politicians like Donald Trump speak at a fourth grade comprehension level. Senator Rand Paul is called too philosophical because he speaks at a seventh grade level.

In this address the father of our country talked about the virtues and responsibilities of a republican government and its citizens. He warned against the evils that could destroy a republic. In particular, Washington warned against • Excessive debt • Excessive partisanship • Maintaining long term favoritism or enmity toward particular foreign governments • Fighting unnecessary wars If you mention this to a neocon, his response is: “That’s so 1797!”

Sure, times have changed. We live in a new era, a new reality. Sparks’ own Karl Rove said that his neocon U.S. is the new reality, and they make history, and all you can do is watch, and write about what they have done.

Only, that was so 2004!

Now when I turned on the British Broadcasting Corporation, a middle aged woman on a talk show asked, “Does anyone here really still believe

that America can get anything it wants, anymore?”

The political tectonic plates are shifting, and a major earthquake is coming.

Over 40 percent of the world is now aligned with the partnership between Chinese-style socialism and Russian conservatism. They are preaching a new vision of economic cooperation and democracy between nations, not necessarily democracy within nations.

Did Putin and Xi Jinping read Washington’s farewell address? Why have we let Russia and China become the new world leaders?

The U.S. is in decline, but that is not necessarily bad. Let the French die in Niger, if they want. They know that part of the world much better than we do.

We have been 16 years in Afghanistan. In most of that forsaken land, dogs are considered unclean.

Yet whenever we sweep a village, we bring bomb sniffing dogs into Afghan homes, causing anguish and humiliation.

And even after 16 years, we dropped propaganda fliers with a picture of a military dog overlaid with a verse from the Quran!

Empire does not suit us. We’re not even good at it. It has bankrupted us and made us mad with fear. We readily give up our liberty for false security. There is no security at the top! There will always be barbarians knocking at the gates.

It doesn’t have to be this way. We could trade peacefully with Russia and China and Iran. We could, but we won’t.

We are heading for a fall instead, and it will be very big drop.

Just lay down the white man’s burden. Bring the troops home.

We thought Bush, Obama and Trump would do just that. We are once more betrayed.

Haven’t there been enough blacklaced widows weeping on flag-draped caskets? Ω

Sanctuary state: Most wild horses in the West hang out in Nevada.

Injured survivors of the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas are learning the difficulty of dealing with what some call the world’s finest health care system. Many of the victims have reported having to pay large sums out of pocket. Friends or family members of various wounded victims have set up funds for them as the costs started becoming apparent.

There are more than 100,000 gunshots treated in emergency rooms annually. Health Affairs reports a study indicating that “The mean per person [emergency room] and inpatient charges were $5,254 and $95,887, respectively.”

The Washington Post reported on California copier repairperson Jonathan Smith, who aided numerous people and took a bullet in the neck. Doctors have not found a way to safely remove the bullet.

Splinter News reported on Zack Mesker, shot in the pelvis as he and a friend were trying to get out of the area. “Zack is currently in the ICU and has a long road ahead of him,” according to his GoFundMe page. “His injuries are internal as well as external. Zack and his family need to pay unexpected medical expenses and recovery rehab.” About two-thirds of the $50,000 goal set for his fund has been raised.

Dennis BAnks 1937-2017 Chippewa Dennis Banks, a founder of the American Indian Movement who led the armed two-month Wounded Knee siege in South Dakota and a week-long occupation of the Bureau of Indian Affairs offices in D.C., has died at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

His niece Wishelle Banks of Nevada said, “His granddaughter was murdered two years ago, and it literally broke his heart. ... He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and underwent surgery at the Mayo Clinic a few days ago.”

Banks and Oglala Sioux Russell Means became the most visible symbols of a newly militant Native American community in the 1970s, though the power of bureaucracy was able to beat back many of the demands of tribes. The ground for the new militancy had been laid among whites by two bestselling books by Dee Brown and Vine Deloria, Jr., and there was substantial sympathy for the movement.

A dispute in South Dakota in which a tribal member was killed by a white person—who was given a light charge— caused a riot in Custer, in which the victim’s mother died.

Shortly afterward, the two AIM leaders rocketed to fame when 200 Native Americans occupied the richly symbolic area around Wounded Knee Creek, where more than 300 Oglala Sioux had been killed by the U.S. Army in 1890.

Charges arising from that protest were thrown out of court, but Banks was convicted of riot and assault with a deadly weapon stemming from the Custer incident, and he jumped bail. At one point, he was staying in Winnemucca with few resources. Nevada tribal leader John Trudell rescued him.

“John took me to Reno, Nevada, and we stayed there with some supporters for two days,” Banks later wrote. From Reno, Trudell moved Banks to the Bay Area. Eventually, California Gov. Jerry Brown gave Banks sanctuary in the state.

Banks later became chancellor of a small college in Davis.

An attack on a tribal girl in Carson City in 1998 and the subsequent trial of Hopi-Paiute-Seminole Rocky Boice, Jr. for his role in a retaliatory beating that caused the death of one of the alleged attackers brought Banks to Nevada to offer support to local Washo tribe members and others.

“He often walked among us here,” Wishelle Banks said after his death. “The Washo always welcomed him.”

Hold your horses Fate of the West’s mustangs still uncertain

Some horse advocates have claimed on social media that the Appropriations Committee changes would lead to horse slaughter on a massive scale—and many thousands of horses could, in fact, be put down both on the range and in BLM corrals and pastures. But the changes made by the committee would not permit horses to be sold to slaughter. Wild horses might be euthanized, but their meat wouldn’t go toward feeding hungry people, anywhere.

According to Amodei, euthanasia in large numbers may not need to happen either. The Reno GazetteJournal reported that during an Aug. 21 interview with its editorial board, Amodei said his support of the amendment was meant to put pressure on horse advocacy groups that are opposed to programs which administer birth control to horses living on the range.

“If we really don’t want to kill ’em—which, by the way, I agree with—then we need to get seriously behind this whole birth control thing, so we can reduce those reproduction rates so they are in line with something the ecosystem can support,” he told the RG-J.

horse Doctors in July, the future of wild horses in the Western United States was thrown into question when the House Appropriations Committee voted to remove language from the law that prohibits the destruction of “healthy, unadopted wild horses and burros.”

Rep. Mark Amodei, a member of the committee and a Nevada Republican, supported the amendment, saying, “The reality is we have a problem. We have to face it, and we have to deal with it.”

The Senate Appropriations Committee will soon consider its version of the budget. Some advocacy groups, like Return to Freedom, have said they “do not believe that the bill will include language that will allow [Bureau of Land Management] to ‘euthanize’—kill—healthy, unadopted wild horses and burros.” But they’re not taking chances, urging members to call their senators.

The BLM oversees the Wild Horse and Burro Program, established in 1971 with the goal of managing wild horse populations and protecting the animals

from ordinary citizens who had for years rounded them up and sold them to slaughter.

Of course, the BLM rounds up horses, too. As of August 2017, the agency was keeping around 44,500 horses and burros in off-range pastures.

Some of these pastures are located on private land. A per-horse fee is paid to land owners whose acreage is used to house horses and burros.

According to March 2017 estimates from the agency, another roughly 60,000 horses and 13,000 burros live on rangelands in 10 states in the West. Of the wild horses roaming free, more than half are in Nevada.

But the BLM doesn’t sell horses to slaughter, because the Act protects them from it. And since 1997, when the Los Angeles Times broke the story that 90 percent of horses adopted out by the BLM had been sold to slaughter by their supposed adopters, the agency has increased the stringency of the adoption process that allows citizens to take in wild horses removed from the range.

New York-based Friends of Animals and San Francisco-based Protect Mustangs are two advocacy groups that oppose birth control for wild horses. The groups say recent studies show use of the contraceptive Porcine Zona Pellucida (PZP)—which is used on various animals in zoos the world over and can keep a wild mare from reproducing for up to two years—has unnatural impacts on mares and their herds. They’ve filed multiple lawsuits to halt experimental programs in which the BLM and private citizens dose wild mares with the contraceptive using dart guns.

One such program in Nevada was stalled by lawsuits from Friends of Animals. Pine Nut Wild Horse Advocates—a non-profit staffed by volunteers—began darting mares in an area near Gardnerville with PZP in 2012. (“No home on the range,” RN&R, Feb. 23). In 2014, with the blessing of the Wild Horse and Burro Program’s Nevada office, they established a pilot program to control the

population of wild horses near the Pine Nut Mountains.

The Pine Nut group’s members use donated funds to pay for PZP training and certification from another nonprofit, the Science and Conservation Center in Billings, Montana. They also use fundraising to pay for the vaccines, which according to SCC president Deb Walker, cost about $25 per dose. So, the program was established at no cost to the BLM—or taxpayers.

It’s been nearly two years since the Pine Nut group darted a mare. The contraceptives they administered to dozens of mares will have worn off by now. But they may soon get a chance to begin their efforts anew.

According to John Axtell, wild horse and burro specialist with the BLM’s Nevada office, the agency is finishing an environmental assessment that, once signed, will clear the way for darting to resume.

“It will likely be signed in November, at which time the volunteers can once again dart the mares with PZP contraceptives,” Axtell said in a recent email interview.

According to Axtell, “because of the amount of litigation involving EAs relating to the [Wild Horse and Burro] Program and PZP in particular, there has been extra review involved.” And this combined with the year’s exceptional fire season, he said, has slowed the process down.

In the meantime, the Pine Nut group has been in contact with Rep. Amodei. Its members want him to do something about

the way the Environmental Protection Agency classifies the drug. PZP is registered as a pesticide with the EPA because the agency has no other, more appropriate classifications for it.

“We have told him the category with the EPA is hurting everyone since it is categorized as a pesticide,” Walker said. “I am hoping he is going to look into that. He wants to do a pilot with us, and I’m thrilled at that possibility.”

While the group waits to begin darting again—and horse advocacy groups wait to see what the Senate Appropriations Committee bill will hold for mustangs—the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board recently adjourned from its meeting in Grand Junction, Colorado. The board is independent and creates a yearly set of recommendations to the BLM for managing horses and burros. This year, as in 2016, it recommended the BLM include lethal options for managing horse populations on and off the range.

After last year’s recommendations sparked public outrage, the agency responded quickly—issuing an online statement avowing it “does not and will not euthanize healthy animals.”

The BLM hasn’t indicated that its position has changed; however, webpages containing statements about the agency’s no-kill policy for healthy animals have been removed from the BLM website. Ω

Taylor Tremayne is 21. She graduated from Spanish Springs High School in 2014 and is now a month away from earning a psychology degree from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Like most local public school students, she participated in Sexual Health and Responsibility Education (SHARE), Washoe County schools’ sex ed program. SHARE curriculum updates proposed earlier this year were shut down by fierce opposition.

Once Tremayne started college, she realized there were some things she wished she’d learned more about in high school.

“I wish I’d learned how to communicate with my partners about sex, and likes and dislikes—and even just how to bring up the conversation,” she said. “I also wished I’d learned about STDs, and how to also bring up that conversation as well.”

If Tremayne were placed in charge of designing the SHARE program, she knows what she would include—more about safe sex, more about pregnancy.

“I would probably steer away from abstinence-based,” she added. “That’s where a lot of high schoolers lose interest.”

At UNR, Tremayne has noticed some efforts to promote safe sex. Members of the French club put condoms in a goodie bag as part of a fundraiser, for example, and there’s an annual Take Back the Night event, in which survivors of sexual assault share their stories publicly. But she hasn’t found a comprehensive resource for students who want to know more about STDs, pregnancy, communicating with partners or similar topics.

“I’m not sure of a website or anything else off the top of my head,” she said, adding that she did eventually garner the information she needed through her peers and through experience. “I think learning with your partners is good. But I wish I’d had more guidance from adults when I was younger.”

She knows a lot about what young people don’t know about sex, and she’s clear on the consequences of not knowing it.

College students, she said, tend to be “woefully underprepared” when it comes to sexual health. Like Tremayne, the first thing Gaulden brought up was communication.

“It’s always about no,” she said. “But when you’re ready to say yes, we don’t have information about when you’re ready for yes. How do you say it? How do you ask?”

“Young men don’t know how to ask,” Gaulden said.

“Neither [young men nor women] know how to set boundaries.

To ask at each point of the process of having a sexual relationship, ‘What’s OK? What’s not OK? How far can I go?’”

So, how many have decided they’re ready for yes?

According to a 2015 study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 41 percent of American high schoolers reported having had sex—which marks a decrease in recent decades. In 2003, it was 46.7 percent.

The numbers for college students are more elusive.

Estimates range from 43 percent to 60 percent, though there does appear to be a consensus among researchers that college-age students are also having less sex than in recent decades. Meanwhile, STD rates have risen. The CDCs found in 2016 that gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis were at an all-time high, and that teens and young adults accounted for a large number of cases.

Gaulden pointed out that some adults are opposed to informing young people about sex-related topics, including STDs, because they believe such discussions encourage promiscuity.

“That’s not the case,” she said. “In fact, studies have shown that students who are well informed are less likely to be promiscuous when they have all the information. Students who are given options about contraception and relationships do a better job waiting and avoiding teen pregnancy.”

When it comes to high school sex ed in general, Gaulden said, “We have an unhealthy approach to it. We treat it like it’s a crime, then we give them no tools to be responsible.

There are some programs that the university and other groups are trying to add, but it should start earlier.”

“There’s really not a lot of information out there for the LGBTQ community, or the asexual students,” she added.

“It’s usually people of the conservative religious base who are opposing this.”

Unlike minds A conservative base is indeed opposing LGBTQ education— and a long list of other sex ed topics—and that community enthusiastically opposed the SHARE curriculum updates proposed earlier this year.

“The curriculum has seen virtually no changes from 2003 until last year,” explained Brooke Maylath, president of the Transgender Allies Group, who had helped draft the transgender and gender-nonconforming-inclusive policy— separate from the SHARE program—that the district adopted in 2015. (The 2003 curriculum, available online, does have a few scratch marks and write-ins that acknowledge LGBTQ students. “When and how one becomes aware of the opposite sex,” was changed to “when and how one becomes sexually attracted to another person,” for example.)

A lot of Maylath’s problem with the 2003 curriculum is what it leaves out.

Among her critiques: the consequences of not teaching communication skills.

“We’re teaching young girls that no means no, and we’re teaching young boys, ‘Boys will be boys. No means yes.

She really wants it.

Just keep on trying,’” Maylath said. “And we wonder why date rape happens? And the heartache, and the pain, and the unwanted pregnancies, and they STI transmissions that are happening because of lack of education, we are failing our students. We’ve been failing them for decades. … There’s not a student I have talked to up at the university—in five years—that hasn’t complained about how the curriculum did not get into the practical, real-world matters that all the sudden they were turned loose on in their freshman year. One young woman was telling me two weeks ago she had finished her freshman year before she had a true concept about what willing consent actually means.”

“We have an opportunity to be able to change that,” she continued. “Or, we did. We were on course to do that, until a professional agitator mobilized a congregation to be able to show up and start to essentially insult and badger and accuse, on both personal levels and professional levels, members of the SHARE committee.”

Beginning in 2015, the SHARE committee—made up of five parents, a school counselor, a teacher, a nurse and a clergy member—began drafting the updates.

“What was done by the school district was to remove some of the most outdated materials,” said Maylath. “The SHARE committee worked diligently to be able to develop a medically accurate, up-to-date, evidence-based curriculum— that was LBGT inclusive.”

The proposed curriculum addresses age-old topics—a straightforward video explains menstruation—and introduces issues that have come up since 2003. A brief video featuring interviews with teens is titled “Perspectives on Chatting Safely Online.” Another video is a dramatization—correlating with modern teen attention spans at 1:06 minutes— examining how a social-media photo can accidentally make its way into the hands of sexual predators.

Abstinence is mentioned, but not as a sole solution.

exactly how to say “no,” using, as an example, a conversation about setting up a movie date—“We can if you want” is not as effective as “No, I don’t want to.”

Community standards Here are two excerpts from the philosophy statement of the existing SHARE program: “The intention of the Sex Education Advisory Committee was to develop a sex education program consistent with community standards.” … “We must give young people the facts, but we must remember it is their sense of right and wrong, their internal moral compass, that determines their actions.”

Determining what the community considers to be right and wrong and which way moral compasses point has turned out to be a complex endeavor. As for “facts”—there’s some passionate disagreement about those, too.

The school district made the new proposal public and held several public-comment meetings in February and March.

On Feb. 23, the Nevada Family Alliance put out an action alert headlined “New Sexuality Training in Washoe Schools,” encouraging people to speak out against the proposed changes.

The Nevada Family Alliance website says that the group promotes “religious freedom” and “parental rights.” Its director, Karen England was once co-chair of a coalition trying to repeal a California law protecting transgender students, and she has publicly opposed LGBT people in the military and the Boy Scouts. England is also executive director of Sacramento-based Capitol Resource Institute, which says it exists “to educate and strengthen families.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center lists it as an anti-LGBTQ hate group.

In a March 8 public-comment meeting at Academy of Arts, Career and Technology, several commenters spoke against accommodating LGBTQ students’ sex education needs.

Some spoke with a sound of heightened emotion, some in measured tones. Supporters and detractors of the proposal both garnered applause—the detractors tended to elicit louder cheers. The moderator admonished the crowd for booing a speaker and asked one commenter, “Please refrain from making attacks on the board.”

Those supporting the curriculum updates—who were in the minority at this meeting—tended to speak about the dangers of being under-informed. A UNR student said she’d been assaulted at age 9 and didn’t know where to turn, “because

that’s not something that was discussed in my elementary school.” A father of two said that the more educated children are, the more likely they are they avoid STDs and pregnancy.

Robert Harding, who works with Northern Nevada HOPES, took the mic and said, “The education we provide in our SHARE program is not adequate” and pointed out Washoe County’s high syphilis rate.

YeVonne Allen, equity inclusion director at Truckee Meadows Community College, said, “I’m the one that, once your kids hit college, I’m realizing the education they don’t have. They don’t know about consent. … They don’t know about transgender individuals, because maybe it wasn’t even taught.”

Allen concluded, “We’re here as educators. Leave religion out of it.”

Of those who opposed the curriculum, most mentioned their faith. Several objected to language and concepts in the proposal that they found age-inappropriate, fourth graders learning what a wet dream is, for example. One parent objected to “pagan influences.” Another said, “You can’t ignore science,” and strongly implied that science does not acknowledge the existence of transgender people.

Dr. Joe Taylor, pastor of the South Reno Baptist Church said, “We have basically said that anything goes, and that all things are right without negative consequences. It’s one-sided, immoral, grossly skewed.”

Pastor Joe Canary of Spirit Filled Church in Sparks said, “As a pastor of a church, and the 500 people I represent, I feel like I’m being bullied because I think that marriage is between one man and one woman.”

Some commenters expressed an allegiance to the Old Testament, linking its messages to their discomfort with homosexuality. “You can’t just throw out 6,000 years of normal,” said one parent.

Several expressed anger over what they called attacks on their freedom to teach their children as they see fit. Some called the proposed program “indoctrination.” Some said the school district was trying to overstep its bounds.

One parent said, “Everything you have done needs to be thrown out and go back to the drawing board.”

That’s exactly what happened.

An alternative model In August, the school board decided not to adopt the changes. The 2003 curriculum remains in place, and the

question remains open of how to design a sex-ed curriculum for the entire community.

“We’re kind of in a situation that people are so dug into their perspective,” said Reverend Karen Foster, director of religious education at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Northern Nevada. “I wonder if somehow a one-size-fitsall answer is not the answer.”

Foster is one person who’s comfortable talking about religion and sex—including LGBTQ sex—in the same sentence. Her church teaches a sex ed program for kids and teens that addresses, among other topics, anatomy, body image, consent, relationships, communication, domestic violence, pregnancy prevention and decision-making. It’s called Our Whole Lives—OWL for short. And that curriculum recently went through an update process, too. It now mentions how specific drugs relate to issues of consent.

“The program was developed in the ’90s as a collaboration between the Unitarian Universalists Association and the United Church of Christ denomination,” said Foster. “Those are two very progressive, liberal denominations, that really believe our kids need something beyond abstinence getting pushed down their throats.”

“We believe that sexuality is a great gift,” she said. “It’s a fully integrated part of who we are.” The OWL program, she said, assumes that developing a healthy approach to sexuality is more beneficial than “to pretend it doesn’t exist.”

Foster said the program results in a community with few domestic violence incidents or unwanted pregnancies.

One comment she said she’s heard often from former participants, is, “I felt like I understood how to talk to partners.” For that success, she credits the detailed information that students receive in OWL, as well as its design. Adult facilitators need about 230 hours of training, kids say the program is fun, and building trust between participants and teachers is a priority.

“Sexuality is a beautiful part of who we are,” Foster said. “It’s integrated into our natures. It’s something to be acknowledged as a gift, rather than something that’s evil or something that we shouldn’t participate in. … What the kids need is information, honest information, and to be respected enough to be given the tools to make decisions. There’s really something to be said for helping kids navigate a situation before they encounter that situation. [Without accurate information], there’s a much higher chance you’re going to get caught blindsided.” Ω

We writers are a solitary bunch. We sit alone for long periods of time, cranking out words that we send off into the ether and hope they will mean something to someone. Yes, editors and publishers—and perhaps even the occasional reader—will give us a bit of feedback, but mostly we work inside a bubble. It’s hard to know just how the work will be received by the public, or even who that elusive public is.

When Catherine Magee came on board as director of the Nevada Historical Society in June 2016, she noticed that the NHS also was in its own sort of bubble.

“Around here, we like to say we’re hidden in plain sight,” Magee said. “A lot of people don’t know about us. They just see us on the University of Nevada, Reno campus and think we’re another UNR office building.”

But one of the things folks did seem to realize was that the NHS Museum Store contains an excellent collection of books about Nevada and the Great Basin. Occasionally, authors would come give talks about their work, but not with any regularity. Certainly writers needed a greater connection to their readers, just as NHS needed another way to reach visitors?

“I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to highlight writers who write on Nevada history?’”

Magee said. “I thought that if we started an evening lecture series, it would allow people who can’t come to events during the day to get a great opportunity to learn about Nevada history and what people are writing about, and to do it after work.”

Thus, in November 2016, the Writers’ Wednesday lecture series was born.

M o Nth ly M eeti N g o f th e M i N d S At that first event a year ago, attorney, historian and author Patty Cafferata spoke about her new holiday-themed book, Christmas in Nevada, which was published by the University of Nevada Press and features stories about how Nevadans from 1858 to the present have celebrated Christmas.

Magee said the timing of Cafferata’s release made her a natural choice for kicking off the holiday season, but since then authors have been selected and booked based on a combination of factors.

“Some authors fit a theme for that month—maybe a holiday or event,” Magee explained. “But we also get contacted by book distributors. For instance, our [October] author, Will Furman, wrote a book called

Bodie: Good Times and Bad, and the publisher called us to let us know it was coming out and asked if we wanted to host a lecture. And sometimes the author hears about the series and contacts us to propose a book.”

There’s no restriction on publisher—some books have come from the University of Nevada Press, but it’s not a requirement, and some authors have even self-published. The only requirement is that the content deal with Nevada, the Great Basin or the West.

Past presenters have included David Antonucci, author of Snowball’s Chance: The Story of the 1960 Olympic Winter Games, Squaw Valley & Lake Tahoe; Lynn Downey, retired historian from the Levi Strauss & Co., and author of Levi Strauss: The Man Who Gave Blue Jeans to the World; David Lowndes, one of NHS’s own researchers and author of Reno’s Heyday: 1931–1991; Robin Flinchum, who wrote Red Light Women of Death Valley and spoke about the mysterious murder of Virginia City prostitute Julia Bulette; and Stanley Paher, a local publisher and author of several books about Nevada history, spoke about how to break into publishing.

when the state didn’t have enough money to pay its bills,” Marshall said.

Though Parker will be on the road and unable to attend, Marshall will provide attendees at the Writers’ Wednesday talk with a little background on the book’s development, then read a few passages, which she said are “more personal in style, and not just dry economic text.” Then she’ll take questions about the book, about where she and Parker feel Nevada is today financially and what they feel can be done to make Nevada more resilient. The book is available on Amazon and at the University of Nevada Press website.

Marshall hopes to see the Writers’ Wednesday series grow.

“I mean, to be able to connect to people who are really interested in what’s going on in Nevada is wonderful,” she said. “It’s really something that should be promoted and celebrated.”

Talki n g cenTs This month, attendees will hear from former Nevada Treasurer Kate Marshall, who co-wrote Nevada’s Great Recession with her husband, UNR associate dean and economics professor Elliott Parker.

Published just this August by the University of Nevada Press, the book is a compilation of articles written during the Great Recession, primarily by Parker himself, which provide a blow by blow of the recession as it unfolded here in the Silver State.

“It takes a look at why Nevada was affected more than other states, why it hit us harder and what effects it had on business, housing, wages and so forth,” Marshall said.

The book also examines how the state can mitigate the effects of another recession, to see that we don’t sustain the same level of damage.

Marshall said she also wrote several vignettes portraying what she saw behind the scenes while working in the state treasurer’s office during that time.

“It’s not really a kiss-and-tell book—it’s more just a reflection on what I was experiencing at the time and what happened that people didn’t really see, for example, what did I do

At press time, the NHS had not announced its roster of speakers beyond November, but Magee suggests following the NHS on Facebook and watching its website, nvhistoricalsociety.org, for news about upcoming lectures. She looks forward to expanding the event to include new genres, too, and indicated that while the lectures have, up to this point, featured authors of nonfiction books, she’s open to other ideas, including fiction and journalism.

“One thing we’re exploring is people who write fiction based in Nevada,” she said.

“There’s going to be a mystery writers’ convention here”—Left Coast Crime 2018, coming in March—“that focuses on mystery writers in the West, so we’re working to see if some of the participants can come give a lecture.”

Supporting local authors, making connections between writers and readers, and sharing the history of and love for Nevada are all goals, Magee said.

“I think it’s nice to meet the author,” she said. “A lot of times people are disconnected from writers, and I think it’s important to realize these people may be talking about the writing process and things you wouldn’t get otherwise, those little bits of information that add to your understanding.” Ω

A lot of the time, DePaul Vera is all smiles—but his artwork addresses some serious questions about identity and visibility.

Unmistaken identity DePaul Vera DePaul Vera described his public image like this: “I’m known as this bubbly, hyper person that is just love all over.” A graduate student in the University of Nevada, Reno’s art department, he’s easygoing and quick to laugh.

Vera also contends with some ongoing difficulty, though—a lot of which is encapsulated in the title of a collage he made right after the Charlottesville riots in August: “Here I Am, Enjoying Graduate School, But I Have to Deal With This, And So It’s Time To Save The World.”

Vera—who is 25, black, gay and originally from Kentucky—said he didn’t intentionally set out to classify himself as a political artist. But after he moved from a racially mixed town to Reno, where only around 3 percent of the population is African-American, an inescapable feeling of otherness set in.

“Just existing as a queer person of color is political in itself,” he said. “The fact is, literally, me breathing is a political statement to some people. So, after the circumstances of the Charlottesville riots, I just felt like I had to make that piece.”

The piece is a digital collage. The background is an old photograph of hooded Klansmen with arms outstretched so that they form a human barricade. A cross burns behind them. It’s a pretty typical image of Klansmen—except the power dynamic is flipped. A nude, muscular black male in the foreground is not in peril, but in a position to have the next word. He stands on a tree stump that serves as a pulpit, striking a relaxed, confident pose and holding against his hip a star-spangled volleyball.

“I was thinking, me being my fun self, how would I approach the Klan?” Vera said. “I would want to serve it up with this volleyball, one by one. Let’s go, guys.”

In others images, Vera’s placed black bodies—often muscular, nude, male ones— in various configurations. He’s asserting that it’s about time for members of his race and orientation to be seen as normal.

“Mostly when you look at advertisements or the media, black people are portrayed as below the poverty line,” he said. “And I think that is absolutely ridiculous.”

Likewise, he said, in media portrayals of gay men, they tend to be white.

Vera said he tries to strike a balance between claiming his place in the public eye and not visually assaulting viewers.

The feedback he’s gotten from grad school peers and social media followers has been all over the map. Some are offended. Some are impressed. Some wish he would include bodies that aren’t built like models.

“As a designer, you know, you try to do things effectively, you try to design effectively,” he said. “And I’m trying not to beat people over the head, but to give them room to breathe as well as put some intense content in front of their faces.”

He understands what a tricky balancing act he’s trying to strike. He keeps experimenting with different ways to be approachable as a person and assertive in message—collaging together elements of history and fantasy, circulating work online, hanging it on gallery walls, maybe getting it onto a billboard someday. And he’s crystal clear on his reasons to keep taking on the challenge: “’cause it’s just swept under the rug so much here.” Ω

“They said there was a plot in this movie. it must be around here somewhere.”

Sawed off It was seven years ago, around Halloween, when I had myself a little celebration. Well, I did a little happy dance in my head when I walked out of a movie theater.

You see, I had just seen Saw 3D: The Final Chapter, the seventh film in the Saw franchise and, as advertised, the supposed last.

Oh, I didn’t really believe it would be the last one deep down in my cinema-going heart. I had been tricked before (Fuck you, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street!) But, you know, it did say “The Final Chapter” in the title, and this was back in the pre-Trump days, when I was a little more optimistic and had a bit more spring in my step.

No more was I to hear Tobin Bell as Jigsaw, droning on about “playing a game” and murdering people with elaborate schemes that would take something like seven billion dollars per death. (A lot of industrial labor, major planning and perhaps a live production crew would be required to pull off Jigsaw’s Rube Goldberg stunts.) After two or three years went by I thought, “Hey, maybe greed won’t win the day and Jigsaw’s cinematic legacy has finally come to an end.”

Nah, the bastard lives on in Jigsaw, a film that pulls Tobin Bell out of the mothballs and finds a way for his permanently scowling, droning party pooper to commence elaborate killings again. Hey, LionsGate needs a hit, and nobody over there is concerned about quality or making a lick of sense. This film is living proof of that.

Things start in that oh-so-familiar, Saw way, with a bunch of people trapped in a room and chained to contraptions that threaten to disembowel them. They are all bad people who must confess their crimes or face the wrath of Jigsaw and a rather stellar makeup department. This movie is idiotic, but the gore masters do some pretty decent yucky stuff. There’s a halfsawed-off head moment that was quite good. I hope the PA or intern who did the work on that one got an extra Snickers for the effort.

Yeah, Jigsaw died in one of the past movies. I don’t remember which, and you couldn’t pay me

enough to go back and watch them again to figure it out. I just know he died somewhere in the prior six films and lived on in flashbacks. The writers have come up with yet another way to return the crotchety psycho codger to the big screen because somebody at LionsGate needs one of those saltwater swimming pools and a new bike.

I’d give you a plot synopsis but, hey, what’s the point, right? It’d just be me running off a bunch of characters played by actors and actresses you don’t really know.

I guess what I could do is describe a few of the killing contraptions that take people out in this thing.

There’s a spinning blade thingamabob rigged to a motorcycle engine that makes little-to-no sense.

There’s also a wire-rigging sniggle-dee-doo that chops a dude’s leg off, and somebody gets injected in the neck with acid. In a nod to the Harrison Ford thriller Witness, a couple almost die by getting buried alive in a grain silo. Oh man, I just referenced Harrison Ford’s Witness in a Saw review. That has to be against film criticism law. I’m sure there’s a fine pending.

The movie is directed by Michael and Peter Spierig, whose best previous effort would be the mind-trippingly good Predestination, a film decent enough to make you sad that they wound up with this gig. Like, really sad. Like, a genuine Halloween-time tragedy sad. They get to work with Hellen Mirren on the cool-looking Winchester: The House that Ghosts Built next, so maybe redemption is on the way.

Seven movies in, and I’ve yet to meet a Saw movie that I like. Jigsaw is more of the same, more of the lame. The most unique thing in this movie is Tobin Bell’s stylish soul patch. (I really did admire it.

It’s a daring facial hair gesture.) At least Cary Elwes doesn’t show up for this one. Although, now that I think about it, a scene with him comically overacting as he saws off yet another limb would’ve been far better than anything in this movie. Ω

Happy Death Day

For the second time in just a month, Netflix scores again on the Stephen King front with this horrific ghost story starring Thomas Jane, no stranger to King territory having starred in Frank Darabont’s The Mist.

Jane plays Wilfred James, a farmer who kills his wife Arlette (Molly Parker) with the help of his lovestruck son, Henry (Dylan Schmid).

Of course, Arlette has been murdered in a Stephen King movie, so it goes without saying that her soul will not rest peacefully, and her corpse will be riddled with rather spirited and determined rats. Jane delivers a chilling, complicated character in Wilfred, a terrible man yet somebody we can watch for an entire movie and feel some concern for his welfare and the welfare of his misguided kid. Wilfred is one of those men who speaks through clenched teeth, and Jane simply disappears into the character. Parker doesn’t have a lot of scenes before becoming a scary spectral, but she does both the pre- and post-murder scenes well.

Schmid is kind of heartbreaking as the dumb son who goes along with his dad’s dumb ideas and winds up paying the price. (Available for streaming on Netflix.)

Ridley Scott’s original sci-fi masterpiece Blade Runner came out in 1982—35 years ago. Scott has tooled with the cut of that movie numerous times, resulting in a final cut that was released about 10 years ago. While there was a lot of monkeying—in a good way—with the original, it didn’t seem there was much thought, or chance, for an actual sequel. The original was a box-office bomb and didn’t start gaining its classic status until a decade after its release. In fact, critics beat up on it a bit.

Here in 2017, we actually do get a sequel, this time directed by Denis Villeneuve, the visionary behind Enemy and Arrival. (Scott remains involved as a producer.) Harrison Ford, who has classically moaned about the original movie, has, nonetheless, returned to play blade runner Rick Deckard. A terrific Ryan Gosling steps into the starring role of K, a new blade runner tasked with “retiring” older model replicants, the synthetic humans originated by the likes of Rutger Hauer and Daryl Hannah in the original. Other than the presence of Ford in the final act of the movie, and the vision of Pan Am and Atari logos still present in the Los Angeles skyline, there’s little to make this one feel like a standard sequel. 2049 goes off on many new tangents, bending the mind when it comes to topics like artificial intelligence, what really constitutes love, and determining what is “real” in this world.

A college girl learns a few lessons about life—and not being a total ass—by reliving the day she is murdered over and over again in this mediocre movie that gets by completely on the star power of a relatively unknown actress, Jessica Rothe. Rothe plays Tree Gelbman, who wakes up in a strange dorm room on the morning of her birthday to discover she has spent the night with a bit of a dweeb in Carter Davis (Israel Broussard). She storms out of the room, ignoring phone calls from her dad and basically being nasty to everybody she encounters on her walk of shame.

It’s established fairly quickly that Tree is a campus jerk and has more than a few enemies.

All of those enemies, and even some of her friends, become murder suspects when Tree is stabbed to death by a mask-wearing baddie on her way to a party that evening. After her life force is snuffed out, she immediately wakes up in Carter’s bed again. She goes about the same day thinking it’s just déja vu, but when she is murdered again and wakes up in the same bed on the same day again, she figures things out.

She’s living a murder mystery—Groundhog Day style. Rothe just sort of comes out of nowhere to make this movie more than a rip-off of the classic Bill Murray vehicle.

Leatherface

Once again, somebody tries to make a Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise entry to revive things and, once again, we get proof that some things are better left alone.

This time, things go to prequel territory, with a silly story about how Leatherface became Leatherface. As was the case with Rob Zombies’s faulty interpretation of Halloween, in which Michael Myers got a bigger backstory, some movie monsters are best left mysterious and mostly unexplained. Much of the action here centers around an insane asylum where a teenaged Leatherface-to-be is hanging out until a riot ensues. He escapes with a hostage nurse (Vanessa Grasse), while being pursued by yet another evil Texas Chainsaw franchise lawman, this one played by Stephen Dorff.

Leatherface’s mom is also looking for him, and she’s played by Lili Taylor, whose career is clearly in a downward spiral along with Dorff’s.

Directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury throw in some gory scares and extremely gross sex scenes, but there’s nothing that puts it in a league with Tobe Hoopers’s original except for the title. (Available for rent on iTunes and Amazon.com during a limited theatrical release.)

Stranger Things 2

After a slow start, Only the Brave becomes a solid tribute to the Granite Mountain Hotshots, who lost 19 men battling the massive Yarnell Hill Fire in 2013. The Hotshots were an elite Prescott, Arizona, crew led by veteran firefighter Eric Marsh, played here

by Josh Brolin. Brolin’s performance ranks among his best, showing us a man presiding over his crew like a father to his sons. Marsh takes a risk on Brendan McDonough (Miles Teller), a former drug user seeking redemption and a decent living to help provide for his newborn daughter. The always reliable Teller matches Brolin’s acting triumph every step of the way, making both Marsh and McDonough fully fleshed, complicated and ultimately likeable characters. The two seem right at home with each other on screen. Director Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, Tron: Legacy) takes a solid step beyond his prior sci-fi missteps to provide a movie that is technically sound, emotionally powerful, and just a little hokey and overlong in spots. The movie is never bad, but it does drone a bit during some of the melodramatic build up. The final sequences are so well done, you’ll feel kind of bad for groaning during the film’s more lumbering parts. By the time Kosinski shows the real-life firefighters alongside their Hollywood counterparts, the film has driven home a major message about and homage to these guys.

The gang is all back, just one year later, for another round of ’80s horror and sci-fi nostalgia, and maybe they should’ve taken a little more time to let things settle in. The new, intermittently enjoyable season feels a little stretched out and undercooked at times, with a lot of silly subplots mucking up the works. Will (Noah Schnapp) still sees visions of the Upside Down universe, the place he spent a good part of season one languishing in while his pals searched for him. It turns out Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), after her huge season one sacrifice going into the Upside Down, came back to our universe almost directly after, and is hiding out with Sheriff Jim Hopper (David Harbour) in a storyline that makes little sense.

Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), in a shameless nod to E.T., has captured a creature in his garbage can, and feeds it Three Musketeers bars instead of Reese’s Pieces. Winona Ryder overacts while Paul Reiser basically replaces Matthew Modine as the scientist guy. Season two manages to maintain the charm that made the first season so watchable, so fans won’t be disappointed. But, there’s no denying that the proceedings seem a little strained this time out. Notable movie references, besides E.T., include Jaws, Pretty In Pink, The Goonies— Sean Astin joins the cast!—Lost Boys, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. (Streaming on Netflix.)

Roll with it Forging its own identity in the space formerly known as Hiroba, Sushimi’s Sushi is both familiar and new. We waited a bit for a table on a Monday night—not more than 20 minutes—and we were warmly greeted upon entry. My wife’s friend and I availed ourselves of free sake, available Monday through Thursday, and I was surprised to see large bottles served for each of us—not a bad way to get things started.

Service was quick, with appetizers rapidly filling the table to capacity. Luckily, we brought a pair of 7-year-old eating machines, twin brothers raised on sushi.

You’ve got to be pretty quick to snag a bite when dining with these enthusiasts. AYCE lunch is $17.95, dinner $22.95, but kids under 12 eat all they can for $11.95 during lunch hours and $14.95 during dinner hours.

Piping hot miso soup was followed by a plate of excellent baked mussels. Deepfried gyoza, calamari rings and yakiton filled out the table, each with its own sauce and crispy character. Seaweed salad provided a light and refreshing contrast to the fried tidbits.

All of the sushi was top-notch. The rice-to-fish ratio was perfect, with each piece holding together well. The boys and I rolled through nigiri orders of tuna, seared tuna, yellowtail, salmon roe, salmon, smoked salmon, red snapper, fresh-water eel, shrimp, upside down shrimp, octopus, squid and sea urchin roe.

The seared tuna was topped with sesame seed and a sweet sauce, and the salmon roe was a fun, salty pop of ocean flavor. Both fresh and smoked salmon were delicious.

The octopus was tender and buttery, and the sea urchin roe was that creamy, velvety, melt-in-the-mouth apparition of sea spray that is completely unique. Shrimp and squid are apparently the boys’ favorites. I

didn’t get a bite of either—but I did manage to snag one upside down shrimp. It was stuffed with crab, and I thought it might be too much for smaller mouths. I was wrong.

I’m told the squid was a bit crunchy, but I’ll just have to take the boys’ word for that.

Next was a pair of hand rolls, one spicy scallop and the other crystal shrimp.

Each featured plenty of seafood mixed in with rice, veggies and sauce, and the nori wrappers were dry and easy to bite through.

They were so well executed I wish I’d had room for more. Next time, perhaps fewer appetizers.

Three long rolls followed, including the Golden Gate (crystal shrimp, cucumber, thin sliced lemon, salmon and green onion), Tundra (crab, mango, tempura shrimp, charred salmon, macadamia, balsamic and teri sauce), and Guapo (cream cheese, crystal shrimp, cilantro, avocado, spicy crab and spicy sauce). The textures and flavor of the Golden Gate were quite good, if a bit on the sweet side. Though I liked the Tundra’s complexity, it was even sweeter, which I find a bit distracting. Finally, the Guapo became the one and only roll containing cream cheese that I’ve ever liked. It was spicy, savory and—shockingly—something I’d consider ordering again.

Unfortunately, it took about 20 minutes to get our server’s attention to order dessert, but the mochi, green tea ice cream and green tea cheesecake hit the table fast. The cheesecake was semi-sweet with a texture like soft butter, and the boys loved their ice cream rice balls. Despite this small glitch in service, our overall experience indicated a meal worth repeating. Ω

Great Basin Brewing Co.’s Outlaw Milk Stout is served year-round on tap and in bottles, usually in both regular and nitro versions.

Dark matter Happy Stout Day. Since 2011, when somebody invented another phony holiday, there have been mildly celebratory tweets, slightly special events, and little else of note to mark the first Thursday in November as International Stout Day. In honor of it, let’s take a closer look at this widely known yet sometimes shunned beer style.

As with many historical origins, there’s uncertainty and disagreement, but it’s generally accepted that “stout” originally described a stronger porter in England— “stout porter,” as opposed to the normal version. Eventually, the two diverged, and stout became a style all its own. These days, the stout family is broad—Guinness’ dry Irish stout is the most famous, but the British motherland lays claim to others like sweet stout and oatmeal stout, while many craft brewers in this country offer a slightly more aggressive American version.

At the top of the stout food chain is the Imperial Stout, a strong, hearty brew, often 10 percent or higher in alcohol, thick and viscous, suitable for aging before properly sipping it by the fire. What they all have in common is the characteristic opaque dark hue and heavily roasted grain flavors.

Stouts sometimes get a bad rap. The perception of dark beer as stronger or heavier refuses to die despite the most ubiquitous brand—Guinness Draught—weighing in at just 4.2 percent, comparable to Bud Light. Most non-imperial stouts are of moderate strength, on par with many of the hoppy IPAs crowding store shelves. Still, the idea of stout as a hearty, chewy beer remains, so as cool temperatures approach when you might seek out more substantial brews, let me give you some local options.

Outlaw Milk Stout—a.k.a. sweet stout

due to the use of lactose, an unfermentable sugar that remains in the beer and contributes sweetness and body—has won a number of medals and is available year-round in bottles and on tap, usually in both regular and nitro versions. If you want a little more stout in your stout, the bourbon-barrel aged Scytale Imperial Stout is worth seeking out when available, though it’s gone for now.

Another worthy, year-round stout is The Blacksmith at The Depot Craft Brewery Distillery. A fairly standard American stout, The Blacksmith will share the limelight with the seasonal milk stout The Milkman in December, followed by the bourbon barreled version, The Return of the Milkman, in February.

Just down the street at Lead Dog Brewing, founder and brewmaster Ryan Gaumer told me his chocolate and vanilla stout, aptly named Choconilla, is coming to the taproom soon in regular and nitro versions as well as canned four-packs. A barrel-aged version will debut to celebrate the brewery’s first anniversary in January.

A little farther off, Truckee brewery Fifty Fifty Brewing will soon roll out its special annual release of Eclipse, a massive imperial stout aged in an assortment of different whiskey barrels and with flavors like vanilla and coffee. You’ll note the rainbow of wax-dipped bottles, color coded to reflect each individual version, when they arrives at local retailers.

Other local brewers offer stouts occasionally, but pitch black beers aren’t for everyone. The dark roasted grains create polarizing flavors. Yet, as a distinguished, complex part of the spectrum of beer styles, stouts are worth a taste. Ω

“I always know when something’s good if it makes me laugh,” says Hellbound Glory’s Leroy Virgil.

Pinball wizard Hellbound Glory “Nothing like a gun will make you feel real tall/Alcohol, Adderall, hey, are you ready for some football?”—those are the opening lines of “’Merica (The Good Ole U.S.A.),” the leadoff track on Pinball, the new album by Reno honky tonk band Hellbound Glory. It’s a portrait of rural patriotism pumped up to a comedic level.

Like a lot of the best country music, there’s a wink and a nod, and a tongue that seems firmly in cheek, but, according to singer-songwriter Leroy Virgil, it’s not—entirely—a piece of satire.

“It felt pretty sincere to me’” he said.

“But in my own strange way of being sincere. … It was written spur-of-themoment about the year that my ex-wife and I met—just running around here in Reno, shooting off fireworks. ... It’s about a feeling, a feeling of freedom and happiness.”

But he’s also quick to acknowledge that there’s humor in his songs. “I always know when something’s good if it makes me laugh. … But making fun of something—I don’t want to do that. I’m not making fun.”

And not every song has humor in it.

“Empty Bottles,” for example, is a straightno-chaser, tears-in-the-beer tearjerker.

The album’s title cut is a rockabilly ripper, with a narrator who bounces—like a pinball—from Las Vegas to Reno, and ends up in Wendover, all wrapped up in a crazy bender. It refers to the challenges of tour life—the constant travel as well as the ubiquity of intoxicants.

“There were substances—it got to the point where we didn’t know what to do with all of them,” he said. “We don’t want to waste stuff, but we also don’t want to die.”

Hellbound Glory, now a Reno institution, has been around for more than a decade in various incarnations, centered around Virgil and lap steel guitarist Rico Peterson. The new album was produced

by Shooter Jennings, the country singer and songwriter, whose father, Waylon, is the father of the style of outlaw country to which Hellbound Glory is clearly indebted.

The band recently premiered a new video for the song “Hellbound Blues.”

In the video, Virgil and a scantily clad female accomplice rob a strip club at gunpoint. They get high on a massive pile of cocaine. She overdoses, and he shoots himself. The video has a horror-movie sensibility that some find funny, but others found it offensive, so Virgil released a follow-up video, apologizing to anyone who thought the video was in bad taste.

The apology video itself has a cheeky tone. Instead of his usual cowboy garb, Virgil is dressed in jogging attire, and ends the video by going for a run in the hills.

Hellbound Glory is known for its raucous live shows, which can go haywire.

“There was a time at the Crystal Bay Club where I sat and flipped off the audience for 10 minutes, and went to piss in the back corner of the stage before security dragged me out,” said Virgil. “That was probably not a very good one. But they hired me back. …

The guy who booked the place—I get a call the next day, ‘Are you OK?’ He was really concerned, worried I’d gone off the rails. ‘Do you need to talk to someone? Are you OK?’ So, it’s nice to know that some of the business people out there in the Northern Nevada, Tahoe, Reno area—they really care about their musicians. They really do. It’s an entertainment town. That’s a good song title—‘Entertainment Town.’” Ω Hellbound Glory plays at The Saint, 761 S. Virginia St., on Nov. 2 as part of the Off Beat Arts & Music festival. LULA WASHINGTON DANCE THEATRE

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Performing Arts Series continues its 2017-2018 season with a performance by the Los Angeles-based repertoire dance ensemble. The Lula Washington Dance Theatre has built an international reputation for the earthiness, vitality, energy and humanism of its repertory—most of it choreographed by founder/artistic director Lula Washington. Lula and her husband Erwin Washington founded the company in 1980 with the aim to provide a creative outlet for minority dance artists in the inner city. Admired as a teacher, leader, dancer and choreographer, Lula Washington fuses African and Afro-Haitian dance while incorporating dance styles of gospel church, classical ballet, modern, street, theatrical and hip hop. Her work has been praised by critics for its strong political and social commentary and avant-garde composition. The company has danced in more than 150 cities in the United States and abroad, including Germany, Spain, Serbia, Mexico, Canada, China and Russia. THE HOLLAND PROJECT MICRO GALLERY: Discernment. The art exhibition features work by emerging artist Yanessa Martinez, a local, conceptual artist working primarily in acrylic. Martinez’s art, like her generation, brings into question social constructs that have formerly been taken for granted. ADONIS PUENTES & THE VOICE OF CUBA ORCHESTRA

Churchill Arts Council presents the all-Cuban, seven-piece ensemble whose sonero sound transports audiences to dance halls of Havana. Bandleader Adonis Puentes’ rich, soulful voice is the perfect front for his orchestra, layering traditional Cuban rhythms with deep bass lines, jazzy horns and his melodic guitar. Puentes was nominated for a Grammy for his vocal work with Los Angeles-based, nine-piece band Mongorama. His most recent CD Sabor a Café received a Juno (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy) nomination for World Music Album of the Year. REMSA FREE CAR SEAT CHECKPOINTS: The Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority offers a free car seat installation and inspection check point as part of its Point of Impact community outreach program. When visiting the checkpoint, parents should bring their children and car seats and schedule about 30-45 minutes or longer for more than one seat. Staff and volunteers will check for obvious defects and determine whether the car seat appears on a national recall list. In addition, they will check the installation, correct any problems and provide education on the proper use and installation of the car seat. Pic me!

I’m a newly divorced woman trying some online dating sites. Because I read your column, I understand how men prioritize beauty. I’m an attractive woman, but I often photograph terribly, and I’m thinking of spending some money and having a professional photographer shoot some pix in a studio.

Would this be a good investment? I feel like I’d have a better shot if I had really great photos.

Being somewhat vain, I fear the candid camera. In fact, I not only favor the posed photo but tend to stick to a single pose.

On online dating sites especially, appearance drives whom we choose or lose. Not surprisingly, marketing researcher Jonah Berger reports that “most online contexts,” including dating sites, “are dominated by posed photos,” as opposed to the candid kind.

Berger notes that people tend to assume that others will find them more likable and worth getting to know if they present “a curated, polished version of the self.” Yet in his research, it was the candid pix that made people more interested in “being friends with or going on a date” with the person pictured.

Those he surveyed also reported feeling “more connected” to those in the candid photos and liking these people more overall.

“Candid photos made photo targets seem more genuine,” Berger explains. They “seem to provide a glimpse into what someone is truly like, an unvarnished perspective on how they look and behave when others aren’t looking.” However, there are times when candids are less advisable. For example, Berger found that employers on LinkedIn were more interested in hiring someone who used a posed photo.

Sadly, it seems the candid “Here I am at 1 in the morning drinking my sixth glass of chardonnay” does not scream, “Hire me!”

But getting back to online dating, let’s temper Berger’s findings with what we all know: The hotter you look, the more replies you’ll get on a dating site. So, because you’re somebody who often photographs “terribly,” your best bet is getting photos taken that appear to be candid. You do this by having a photographer or friend shoot you “in action”—in other words, appearing not to notice the big honking lens

or the iPhone right in your face.

Plan to shoot a ton of photos, and at least a few will catch you looking babe-alicious.

Who will stop the wane?

I’m happily married. My wife is beautiful. She used to put a lot of effort into her appearance, but she now wears sweats and T-shirts everywhere, and she never wears makeup or does her hair. I felt really bad about this on our recent date night, when she just put her hair in a ponytail and wore a slouchy army jacket. I want her to keep making an effort to put herself together for me. How can I offer her constructive criticism without making her mad?

I suspect the term “constructive criticism” was coined by someone who went through life without ever encountering another human being.

Here in the real world, criticizing people doesn’t make them change; it makes them want to clobber you. That’s because our ancient fight-or-flight system is a little one-note—juicing us to respond to a verbal attack as if it were an attack by some dude running at us with a bloody spear.

So, though it isn’t unreasonable to want your wife to make an effort on date night, you should focus on what you do want to see rather than what you don’t. For example: “Honey, you’re so beautiful, and when it’s date night, it would make me so happy if you did your hair and wore a dress. And I’ll wear whatever you want.” And to get her to make more of an effort day to day: “I love you so much, and I want to be sure we keep the romance alive.” Make clear that you aren’t expecting her to do the dishes in an evening dress and a tiara. You’d just be thrilled if, from time to time, the thigh-highs could be fishnets instead of hip waders. Ω

Who is eligible to attend Startup Weekend?

Anyone over the age of 13. That is a requirement, and that is pretty much it.

We give discounts to students. We really encourage them to try it out. It’s practical learning. It’s not theoretical, how to start a business, it’s “let’s get it done.”

Who are you expecting?

This is our fifth year of doing Startup Weekend in the area. We’ve had everyone from a 13-year-old—who’s apparently planning on attending this year—all the way up into the 60s. We have all types of backgrounds, people who are in the tech and start-up scene, and who are fanboys of Elon Musk, all the way to people who just have an idea, and they don’t even know what it means.

Did you attend it yourself, when you were first starting out?

Yes, I helped organize a little bit. And then, I was hooked. That was 2013.

What did you learn that year?

It’s a great way to build a network, because you’re meeting people who also think it’s fun to do this for a weekend.

Some of my best professional contacts are the ones I met and worked with that weekend. That was a great thing, because you’re actually working with the people. You find out if you actually want to work with them.

What happens during the weekend?

Friday night, everybody comes together and gets out the pre-jitters. We do little

games and stuff like that, ice-breakers.

And then you pitch an idea. You have 60 seconds to pitch an idea. … And then, what the crowd does, through a very democratic use of Post-its, is, we vote for our favorite ideas. We usually vote for three of them, and then whoever gets the most Post-its is basically the teams that go forward. … Saturday, we start at 8 a.m., and it’s—who are your customers, go talk to them, would they be interested in what you’re offering?

Maybe you should pivot. What are your competitors doing? What are they doing wrong? … And that goes to midnight. It’s very intense. It’s a lot of work. It’s fun work, though, if you’re passionate about starting a business.

And on Sunday, it starts again at 8 a.m.

It’s polishing up your pitch. It’s making sure your business model is ready for the judges, and then the judging starts at about 4:30, 5 o’clock.

I mean, if a guy just told a judge that he was absolutely guilty of working his Russian connections for thousands of Democratic e-mails with the obvious hopes of finding great dirt to slime the Clinton campaign, and that he was working on the Trump campaign at the time of these communications, and his superior would say stuff like “Great work” as opposed to “We better call the FBI,” well, uh, gee—isn’t that pretty much a done deal? Doesn’t that prove that every time DOTUS (Dipstick) says there was “no collusion, no way, no collusion,” he’s lying (again) as purely and completely as it’s possible to lie?

I just love, love, love the image that Georgie Guilty might have dropped by the White House in September and had a nice long chat with Jared and Ivanka and Papa Perry Combover, and the batteries in the wire he was wearing stayed strong throughout. Wouldn’t that be just special? I wonder what they would talk about? I’m guessing something along the lines of “OK, everybody, let’s get our stories straight.” We just may find out some day soon. Fun! Why is grouchy glowerer press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders? Why isn’t she simply Sarah Sanders, like a regular humanoid?
