R.I.P. Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Here we are again. A heartbreaking, senseless event that requires a sensible response. It’s frustrating and disgusting that we’ve started to develop rituals and routines for responding to gun massacres.

We hash out the semantics of words like “terrorist” or suss out the slippery threads of motivation. I’m so sick of this shit.

One difference this time is that the massacre happened in Nevada. Nevadans died, and the killer was a Nevadan. Many of us in the north knew people who were attending that concert in Las Vegas on Sunday night where at least 59 lives were ended and where hundreds more were injured. It feels close to home. But that doesn’t really matter.

What matters is that we— Americans—need to do something to prevent these massacres from happening again anywhere in the country. Two things need to happen: 1. Better funding and access for mental health care. 2. Sensible gun control legislation. It should be harder to get a gun—especially an automatic weapon—and easier to get mental health care.

It’s that simple.

Before Sunday night, I had planned to use this space to hype the awards the RN&R won at this year’s Nevada Press Association awards banquet, but that’ll have to wait ’til next week. I’d much rather write about that. Or write about the gorgeous fall weather, the nasty allergens in the air, the stupid, petty strip club controversy, the newest beers, the baseball postseason, Halloween, bar crawls or pot shops. I’d rather commemorate a beloved musician who passed away after a long, successful career.

R.I.P. Tom Petty.

And R.I.P. to all those folks who had their lives stolen from them on Sunday night.

Walled out Re “Walled in” (Arts & Culture, Sept. 21): Regarding your story about graffiti “art,” my kindest comments are as follows: As the story mentioned, the “art’ is illegal.

It is also ugly—“art” is pretty much subjective.

It is vandalism, generally done without permission of the owner, if done on private property, or permission of whomever is in charge of maintaining the space, if done on public buildings or surfaces.

It is intrusive. I do not want to look at whatever somebody else decides to do for my edification or enjoyment.

It is expensive to clean up/remove.

The “artist” states, “We paint stuff on the street. It’s for the people. It’s for fun. It’s for information.”

It’s bullshit. It’s illegal, ugly, expensiveto-repair vandalism: I don’t want it. I don’t want to look at it. And I don’t want to have to pay for someone to clean it off of whatever surfaces the “artist” decides to deface.

I feel—very strongly—that the “artist” deserves the strongest penalties applicable for this illegal activity. Yes, get the vandalism into a closed building where it’s not shoved in my face if I walk down a street.

BELIEVE Re “Time to do the hard work” (editorial, Aug. 17): This editorial was thought-provoking and illuminating, and highly relevant to the polarized dialogue that is now occurring in our society. In this time, where false narratives and fake news items are advanced to provide support to the fact-devoid opinions and beliefs of many, the editorial underscores the important point that real facts, hard data, and evidence—as well as reasoning and actual thinking—is vital to identifying and solving problems.

As you say, “faith” is important and has value. In many matters of faith, there is no scientific data or material evidence. But where there is logical proof, hard facts, and data, and where sound reasoning can be applied, it is far too easy—and an evasion of the responsibility to do the “hard work” that the editorial calls for—for people to simply say “I believe,” “in my opinion,” and “I think.” Mere beliefs, opinions, and thoughts should be explored, challenged, and examined to determine if “there is any there there.”

The loudest among us In 1968, when television crews were setting up for coverage of another assassination and funeral, this one Robert Kennedy’s, just 62 days after Martin Luther King’s, a TV worker was heard to say something like, I think we’re getting too good at this.

There may have been some of that feeling in Las Vegas Sunday as the satellite trucks rolled in and crews went through the familiar routine of covering mass murder.

There are routes that can be followed across the country—San Ysidro, Las Vegas, Aurora and Littleton, Omaha, Wilkes Barre, Newtown—or up the coast, if preferred— San Bernadino, San Francisco, Roseburg, Seattle. A southern route? Waddell, Fort Hood, Austin, Kinston, Jacksonville, Orlando. No one and no place is immune.

“The victims of the violence are black and white, rich and poor, young and old, famous and unknown,” said Robert Kennedy, another victim. “They are, most important of all, human beings whom other human beings loved and needed. No one—no matter where he lives or what he does—can be certain who will suffer from some senseless act of bloodshed. And yet it goes on and on.” That was 49 years ago.

A more recent victim, Gabrielle Giffords, said this week of her former congressional colleagues, “I know they got into politics for the same reason I did—to make a difference, to get things done. Now is the time to take positive action to keep America safer. Do not wait.”

Like many, when we heard the rapid fire of a semiautomatic or automatic weapon in Las Vegas, it angered us. These are not weapons used for deer or chukkar. This

is one kind of weapon that could have been dealt with by Congress decades ago without interfering with sport shooting. There might still have been death tolls from Las Vegas and other communities, but they would have been smaller, and that is worth the effort. Controlling rapid fire weapons won’t halt mass murders, but it will mean fewer victims.

Instead, Congress has listened to those who want to “make it easy for men of all shades of sanity to acquire whatever weapons and ammunition they desire,” as Kennedy put it. Congress is not serving the nation by going along, it is serving a small, fanatical slice of our country.

In 1980, 85 people died in the Las Vegas MGM Grand Hotel fire, and sentiment was strong to require hotels to install sprinklers. Lobbyists went right to work and, by the time the 1981 Nevada Legislature went into session, they had stopped any chance of a sprinkler bill passing. Another fire broke out during that legislature, this one at the Las Vegas Hilton, killing five more. That got the bill through.

Do legislators need another mass murder in Nevada?

In 1996, at the behest of the gun lobby, Congress made federal gun research illegal. That is the level of head-in-the-sand zealotry we are dealing with, of willfully remaining ignorant—and taking the rest of society along.

Soon Congress will debate what, if anything, to do in the Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act about gun silencers, devices that can delay knowledge that a mass murder is even under way, giving a perpetrator a few more seconds to increase the kill.

Such political madness holds us all hostage to the loudest among us. Ω

Las Vegas generosity, Congress inaction Like so many others, I’m beyond frustrated with the “thoughts and prayers” of politicians after every mass shooting, offered once again following the horrific mass murder Sunday night at a Las Vegas country music concert. President Trump weirdly offered his “warmest condolences” via Twitter before his handlers could get a grip on his tweeting thumbs, shoving a teleprompter speech at him with more appropriate and somber language, although much of it was along the usual predictable lines, “We pray for the day when evil is banished and the innocent are safe from … fear.”

As is too often the case, the shooter had an arsenal of weapons at his side, on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel.

There is essentially no gun control in Nevada, no limits on how many you can buy or the size of the magazines. You can openly carry a rifle or shotgun. You can even possess, purchase or sell a machine gun or silencer. And before the gun fanatics start with the “guns don’t kill people,

people do” nonsense—it’s worth restating that one man, aided by his 19 guns, killed 59 people and shot 500 more in just a few minutes (these figures are as of press time). This is not the Second Amendment in action. This is mass murder by firearms.

By all accounts, sheriff’s deputies and first responders performed their extremely dangerous jobs with considerable bravery and competence, quickly deducing where the shooter was and taking calm, methodical action to stop him. The video from the scene is heartbreaking to watch, as 22,000 people run for their lives while the bullets rain down upon them.

The Las Vegas community responded quickly and generously to the tragedy.

Hundreds of people stood patiently in line for hours to give blood while others posted their availability to provide rides to the hospital or shelter for family members.

Donations poured in to help the victims and volunteers. State politicians offered support to the community and, of course, their thoughts and prayers.

But it’s action we need, instead of more thoughts and prayers. No other country in the world endures the endless mass shootings caused by our gun worship. U.S. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut tweeted “Congress needs to get off its ass” adding, “To my colleagues: your cowardice to act cannot be whitewashed by thoughts and prayers. None of this ends unless we do something to stop it.”

There is plenty that can be done.

As columnist Nicholas Kristof pointed out in the New York Times, “When Australia suffered a mass shooting in 1996, the country united behind tougher laws on firearms. As a result, the gun homicide rate was almost halved and the gun suicide rate dropped by half, according to the Journal of Public Health Policy.”

Sadly, that’s not likely to happen here, because the National Rifle Association maintains its tight grip on bought-and-paid-for politicians who

are in such denial that federal funding for gun violence research is outlawed, even for how to make guns safer for gun owners. We are so gun-obsessed in the United States that with 4.4 percent of the world’s population, we have almost half of the civilian-owned guns in the world. In Nevada, we haven’t been able to implement a streamlined universal background check system approved by voters, thanks to a technicality our Attorney General Adam Laxalt is hellbent on using.

The House of Representatives is about to debate the silencer provision of the SHARE Act to repeal restrictions on gun silencers. Imagine how a silencer would have increased the casualties in Las Vegas, making it harder for victims and police to identify the source of the gunshots.

Our elected officials must confront the NRA and protect us. It’s going to take more than prayer to end the violence. Ω

Title IX and due process In 2011, the U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights (OCR) sent a “Dear Colleague” letter to universities announcing a new interpretation of Title IX, originally intended to fight discrimination against female college athletes. The OCR declared campus sexual assaults a type of discrimination. Fearful of losing federal funding, universities scrambled to establish tribunals to hear campus sexual assault cases.

The OCR required tribunals hear cases under the “preponderance of the evidence” standard, rather than “beyond reasonable doubt” or even “clear and convincing” standards. Moreover, accused students could not have an attorney, or even cross examine their accusers, because that might cause trauma to the victim.

Legal experts generally agree that the reasonable doubt standard requires at least a 90 percent certainty of guilt to convict.

The preponderance standard reduces that threshold to 50 percent. Probability theory predicts that at least one in four innocent people would be found guilty under the

preponderance threshold, compared to fewer than one in 20 under the reasonable doubt standard.

In a short time, the new policy produced bizarre and shocking results. USC football player Matt Boermeester was found guilty and expelled because a nosy neighbor reported his roughhousing with his athletic girlfriend as an assault. Her testimony that they were playing was dismissed as a sign of battered woman syndrome, and a court has stayed his expulsion until a trial—but that will not be until sometime next year.

University of Texas at Arlington student Thomas Klocke committed suicide after he was found guilty of sexual harassment, accused by a gay student whose advances he rejected and who claimed Klocke told him to commit suicide. Colorado State University-Pueblo student of color Grant Neal had a third party accuse him of assaulting a woman who said there was no assault, but he was expelled anyway. His lawsuit against the campus was settled out of court after a judge found the campus process shot

through with “bias and inaccuracy.” So many black students were accused under the new policy many observers question whether the policy itself is discriminatory.

Even educators were swept up in the new panic. Northwestern University Prof. Laura Kipnis had Title IX complaints filed over her published article in which she argued that campus attitudes toward sex and rape were infantilizing, anti-feminist, and creating a culture of fear. When she published a book on her case, another investigation was opened. Professor Kipnis is being investigated for writing about being investigated.

In our Victorian legal culture, all sexual acts are potential violations worthy of investigation and punishment. Campus sexual assault panic is just one manifestation of the state war on sex. Sex-trafficking hysteria, attacks on Backpage.com for carrying sex worker ads, sex registry laws that unreasonably punish sex offenders, laws conflating teen sexting with distribution of child pornography all manifest the hypocritically prudish mentality infesting the ruling class.

On Sept. 22, new Secretary of Education Betsy de Voss withdrew the Obama-era Dear Colleague letter. Her revised letter correctly notes that the new policy was implemented without public notice and opportunity for comment.

More importantly, her letter spoke of the deprivation of due process rights caused by the new policy, both to the accused, who is denied due process, and the victim, who often does not see resolution.

Opposition is already forming to DeVoss’s decision. Former Obama staffers have set up a legal defense fund for a court fight. One of the members of the group’s advisory board is U.S. Commission on Civil Rights chair Catherine Lhamon, former head of the OCR that sent the now-revoked Dear Colleague letter in 2011. Ω

A GoFundMe account set up for victims of the Las Vegas shooting was nearing its $4 million goal at press time. 51,339 donors had brought the total to $3,604,767. It took less than a day for the bulk of that amount to be raised.

“Being a Las Vegas native, this breaks my heart,” read one message posted by a donor. “STOP HATE” read another.

Former reno man smeared “Falsehood flies, and the Truth comes limping after it,” Jonathan Swift wrote. The internet’s speed at spreading information should make us cautious, but it appears not. A former Reno man named Geary Danley was recklessly identified as the Las Vegas killer by extreme conservative websites that appeared to smear him in order to discredit liberals.

It began soon after the Oct. 1 shooting when Las Vegas police were seeking a woman named Marilou Danley. She was later cleared and dropped as a person of interest, but in the meantime, internet denizens looked for Danleys to check out. References to another Danley in the same state, albeit 450 miles from Las Vegas, came to their attention.

When they found Geary Danley, who still had Reno online references, they really zeroed in, since he appeared to be typecast as their idea of a villain—“REGISTERED DEMOCRAT!” one site exulted. “To name someone as a mass murderer based on that evidence would be irresponsible and dangerous,” wrote the Washington Post’s Abby Ohlhelser.

But conservatives did it.

As they learned more about Danley, now a resident of Arkansas, they started upping the ante in their recklessness, some even naming him the killer. Jim Hoft’s Gateway Pundit in St. Louis ran a piece by Hoft’s brother Joe headlined, “Las Vegas Shooter Reportedly a Democrat Who Liked Rachel Maddow, MoveOn.org and Associated with anti-Trump Army.” (Jim Hoft has received an award from the right wing Accuracy in Media, while liberal Media Matters has an article headlined “22 Times Jim Hoft And The Gateway Pundit Were Absurdly Wrong.”)

The article contains verbiage that makes anyone concerned about accuracy squirm on reading it: “Geary Danley, the murderer of at least 20 concertgoers in Las Vegas, from initial accounts was a far left loon.”

Everipedia: “Geary opened fired [sic] on the 34th floor of the Mandalay Bay toward a concert happening across the street.”

Sites like Facebook and Google News were slow about cleaning this stuff off their sites once the truth became known. It may have been uncertain who—humans or algorithms—were in charge, as pieces with the false claims and pieces correcting the false claims appeared side by side. As late as the morning of Oct. 2, Buzzfeed reported Google News had a “top story” falsely claiming Geary Danley as the shooter. (Buzzfeed also posted a story listing 19 dubious claims about the Nevada shooting.)

As this piece is written on Monday evening, a site called Follow News has lifted the Gateway Pundit material and is running it uncorrected, even as another of its pages reports the smear.

Some comments on the story suggest it’s just something society will have to live with in an internet age. “Misinformation Is the New Normal of Mass Shootings,” was a headline at Politico. “Viral hoaxes are an unfortunate, and permanent, part of how we experience tragedy online,” said Wired. If it turns out to be permanent, a lot of sites are going to be paying out a lot of money.

Besides Buzzfeed, the Washington Post kept “A running list of viral hoaxes and misinformation” about the tragedy.

Some sites—not enough—offered apologies to Danley.

Now you see it Last year’s school costs vanish The Washoe County school district has announced cost figures for new elementary and middle schools that are sharply higher than figures used during the 2016 campaign for WC-1, the ballot measure that hiked the sales tax for school construction. The district is asking the Capital Funding Protection Committee to sign off on a $200 million bond from the new money, with three constructions—two middle schools and one elementary school—to be financed by the bond. An elementary school in south Reno is funded at $34 million, 47.82 percent higher than the $23 million cited per elementary school in last year’s campaign. A Sun Valley middle school is funded at $85 million, 54.54 percent higher than the $55 million figure per middle school used in last year’s campaign. A middle school in Spanish Springs is expected to cost $50 million, 45.45 percent higher than ten months ago.

Nevada education reformer Stephen Lafer quickly pointed out the changed figures.

“As I recollect, the main proponents of WC-1 were representatives of the kind of big construction companies that will have to be hired to build the schools,” Lafer wrote in his blog.

“Who now is projecting cost increases amounting to 40 percent more than projected during the campaign to pass the measure? I have to believe it is these very companies.”

He noted that those who support school construction do not support education in other ways and tend to be the “same people, over the years, [who] were more likely than not to be opponents of measures intended to raise teacher salaries or cut studentto-teacher ratios, measures critical to attracting the best and brightest, and insure that the conditions of work were reasonable in respect to legitimate goals for education in a democratic society. I asked repeatedly if it could be true that WC-1’s main supporters might be acting selfishly, whether their claims of wanting what was good for the community was outweighed

by their desires to increase corporate profits. So, being of this frame of mind, I wonder how it could be that the cost of building the buildings that are to be paid for with WC-1 funds has risen so in such a short period of time.”

Lafer also faulted the Reno GazetteJournal for burying the news of the increased building costs. It appeared on the RG-J’s jump page near the end of a front page story that was basically about the WC-1 tax hike producing more revenue than had been projected—even though the higher costs are eating up much or all of that increase. Lafer noted that the headline on the story was “WCSD: WC-1 may generate $955M” and not “Cost of Building Schools Rises Precipitously.”

Economists say the inflation rate has been unusually low this year, and job wage gains have been relatively minor. Indeed, the low inflation rate has generated wide debate on how the Federal Reserve Board should react.

But school district needs specialist Riley Sutton said, “If you’re looking at broad numbers, yes, inflation is low. But if you’re looking at the construction industry, absolutely not. The numbers are very high, up to highest in the state and one of the highest in the nation.”

Labor and materials costs are driving the price rises in the construction field, he said: “The factors driving it are,, obviously the labor shortage locally.

Everybody is fighting each other for workers. Everybody that wants to is working 60 to 80 hours a week.”

As for materials, he said both expected and unforeseen factors are at work: “Materials are being impacted by everything—China, Houston, Puerto Rico.”

Briefing materials prepared for a Sept. 28 meeting of the Washoe capital funding panel said China alone is buying up half of the world’s cement and more than a third of the world’s steel. Meanwhile, the challenges of rebuilding that are rapidly coming into play in the disaster areas are further straining availability of materials. He said when negotiating with suppliers, it is common to ask something like—on, say, a purchase of PVC pipe—“How long will you hold

that price for me?” In normal times, Sutton said, the answer would be something like 30 days. But in today’s economy, he said, it is likely to be 30 minutes.

“It’s crazy,” he said.

Sutton said the school district is not the only entity experiencing these trends, that they afflict everyone, public and private.

He pointed to a briefing paper given to the Nevada Board of Regents at the board’s last meeting: “Following completion of the construction documents the University Arts Center project was competitively bid in May 2017. The winning bid was $35.6M, $10.8M or 44 percent percent higher than previously estimated. … This dramatic cost increase primarily reflects the current high-cost construction environment in Northern Nevada involving materials and especially labor.”

School board member Scott Kelley says questions about the differences in costs from last year to this are legitimate for citizens like Lafer to raise and that school board members have an obligation to get answers for them. At the same time, he said he has considerable respect for the skills of school district officials like Sutton and district chief operations officer Pete Etchart.

“They’re the experts,” Kelley said. “They have a committee dealing with these things, and I’d have to go along with what they say.

However, that is a pretty significant jump, and I think we owe it to the citizens to say, ‘Why are there differences?’ and delve into

it to get accurate information. It’s the job of a school district trustee to scrutinize the data, scrutinize the dollar amounts and keep asking questions until we have as accurate information as possible that we can report to the public.”

The district said on Sept. 22 that the increased sales tax, which gave Washoe County the highest sales tax in the state and one of the highest in the nation, is generating more revenue than expected, which offers the prospect of bonding for $955 million instead of the expected $780 million.

That, however, involved betting on the come. When asked how much of the increased revenue is being consumed by the increased cost, Sutton said it is difficult to keep a handle on it, but he suspects that “right now we’re about even.”

There is an assumption in the school district that workers who departed Nevada during the recession are slowly returning, and that materials suppliers will adjust to conditions, eventually returning the economy to something resembling normality in costs.

At that future point, they hope, the incoming revenues will overtake the costs.

“Not yet,” Sutton said. “We’re absolutely hopeful that later it will bring in more revenue than inflation” can cancel out. Ω

by Ashl ey WA rren What happens when you bring together three established, groundbreaking artists and create a show about Nevada?

The result is an exhibition with depth, unique interpretations of place and landscape, and an inescapable tension between light and dark. But that’s to be expected when Ron Arthaud, Nolan Preece and Michael Sarich come together for one exhibition.

This one opened at Stremmel Gallery on Sept. 14.

Parker Stremmel, gallery manager, said the show is loosely themed, and it serves more as three solo shows combined into one. These particular artists were chosen for their work and thier different approaches to landscape and the natural world—and also for their significant impact on Reno’s art scene.

“Their influence in this region has been powerful,” said Stremmel.

The artists themselves are humble about this claim. Much of their influence can be attributed to their careers not only as artists, but as educators. Sarich has taught painting and drawing at the University of Nevada, Reno for 28 years. Preece taught photography at Truckee Meadows Community College before retiring in 2010 to focus on art. Arthaud has led drawing and painting workshops for aspiring artists.

Being in classrooms has allowed each them to impart their knowledge to students, along with their often groundbreaking approaches to creating art. That’s what also makes them so influential—it’s hard to look at the work of these artists and easily connect it to the work of others.

Regardless, they are each reluctant to take credit for any derivations on their work.

“I want them to form their own voice,” said Sarich of his students.

However, that hasn’t stopped the community from giving credit where it’s due. In 2008, artists created an homage to Sarich in a show called Inkspiration, in which attendees wore temporary tattoos featuring his well-known “Devil Girl.”

The big picture What all three artists share is a love of texture, and it permeates the whole show. Arthaud is a plein air painter who lives in Tuscarora, and his paintings feature vivid, intentional brushstrokes depicting familiar Nevada sights: an abandoned barn, a luminous sky, a cluster of sagebrush.

“It’s very fractured,” said Arthaud. “[I use] dabs of color, and I see the atmosphere in nature. Nothing exists in isolation.”

He referred to sunlight glinting on sagebrush, for instance, and the colors of the plant that can change profoundly in the course of a day.

“It’s almost like a fluid, air and light and color,” he said. “It’s almost pixelated. The colors are lush and very moody.”

He cited impressionists such as Monet. Up close, the viewer only sees the texture of canvas and the paint superimposed on it, but, from a distance, the whole image comes into view.

Arthaud used words like “dreamy,” although the process of plein air painting can be physically demanding, and sometimes the weather doesn’t comply. When he paints in the open air of Tuscarora, he’s immersed in the landscape entirely, although viewers may not see the impact of wind or heat on the painting itself.

“For me, I enjoy the feeling and the melancholy and spending time in the abstract,” said Arthaud. “I look at lines and movement, and it’s cacophonous. I get really excited about that.”

Preece, a longtime photographer, creates “chemigrams,” in which he uses photo processing chemicals to “paint” on photo

27th Annual paper. He then enhances the designs digitally. His father was a hobby photographer, and Preece learned at a young age how to mix chemicals in a darkroom.

The results are fragmented vignettes of places that Preece pulls from his memory, usually a mix of locations around the West. He referred to them as “dystopian and apocalyptic landscapes.”

“I’m working a lot with environment and climate change,” he said, mentioning wildfires and fossil fuels.

Preece sees his work as a center point between the vibrancy of Arthaud’s paintings, and the abstraction of Sarich’s. The black outlines and bursts of bright color in Preece’s chemigrams transition well into Sarich’s bold paintings. What distinguishes Sarich’s work in the show is the presence of humans and human creations, skulls being the most obvious, but also buildings and boats. For Arthaud, the human impact on nature blends into the landscape, as if a collapsing wooden structure was meant to R o n A r t hau d, pa in ter be there just as much as the trees it was sourced from. But for Sarich, the dichotomy is more glaring.

He place humans in the literal center of each piece.

“It can be read in layers,” said Sarich of his paintings, and it’s true. It takes a few repeat viewings to really see everything in each one.

“A lot of it comes from personal storylines,” he said. He also mentioned agriculture as a common theme in his paintings, which links humans to the environment they cultivate.

The different approaches to nature, human or otherwise, connect the three artists across their chosen media.

The result of the show is a sort of spectrum of feeling and attitude, and longtime Nevadans can relate. A Nevadan may first be drawn to the beauty and awe of the state’s diverse terrain, as captured by Arthaud. Then, they become more aware of the complexity of Nevada, the ebb of its seasons that reveals a starkness, which Preece evokes through his more fragmented interpretations of familiar sights, such as an orb of moonlight shining through a thicket of trees at dusk. The colors become more muted in his work, dusky dark gold and crimson. Then comes a deeper fall into abstraction with Sarich’s imagery, featuring skulls and shadowed shapes immersed in vibrancy, embodying the feeling of Nevada—a lingering sense of discordance, the desolation of the beautiful landscape and the creatures who both perish and thrive in it. Working the same job for 40 years and still adoring it takes commitment, and Lady Jill Mueller is dedicated to her artwork. A childhood hobby of drawing with her sister evolved over time into a passion for painting.

Creativity was in her blood, as her mother was a gifted artist. Mueller felt that her mom had settled for married life rather than pursue that talent. Mueller herself gave marriage a 12-year try, too, but she decided that path wasn’t for her after all.

After her marriage ended, she struggled to earn an income. Unsure how to support herself, she tried different things, at one point being a caregiver.

The job didn’t suit her. She yearned for a life where she could be true to herself and do something she enjoyed. She began creating and teaching painting to see herself through the ups and downs of economics and life. Today, still loves to creating paintings, drawings and etchings. She also shares her passion with others, teaching classes and workshops.

She hopes to find a protégé who will carry on her love of watercolors.

Inside her country rambler home in Carson Valley, paintings and drawings hang all around and rest on the floor, leaning in stacks against the wall. The many canvases each have a destination—an art sale here or an upcoming exhibit there. Lady Jill has a full docket of events and material to show and sell at each. Most of the work that awaits a new home was inspired by looking outside her current one. Standing at

a big picture window in her dining area, she has a straight sight line to her favorite thing, the mountains. The terrain was what compelled her to move from California and make the Sierra Nevada home years ago.

“My biggest inspiration is mountains,” Mueller said. “One of the coolest comments I’ve gotten over the years when people look at my artwork is that they can tell I love the mountains.”

One watercolor canvas she’s been working on at her easel shows a purple mountain range brushed by gentle fog and a white, wintery landscape. It’s marked with berry bushes where a deer is snacking. The painting is called “Berries for Breakfast” and is drawn directly from the view outside her window.

If she’s in Yosemite, Mammoth or at her home in Northern Nevada, she will grab a canvas to capture what she can of the moment, even if it’s just a small bit of it. All of these “starts,”as she calls them serve as snapshots of places she goes. And making them sharpens her mind and talents. Putting something, anything, on the blank canvas is a piece of advice she learned from artist David Millard. Mueller proudly has his book The Joy of Watercolor in her home library. In her copy, he signed the inside cover with a note saying, “Work is the only secret. Paint every day. Put in the mileage.” So, she does. And it looks like that’s not going to stop anytime soon.

“I don’t think I’ll ever stop painting,” she said. “I’m gonna be the old lady directing the art show and shuffling to class.” Ω

Flying high The messed-up life of pilot Barry Seal gets a movie that’s not messed up enough in American Made, an entertaining film that plays it a little too safe. Drug cartels and Iran-Contra are played for laughs in a story that probably shouldn’t have us giggling all that much.

The movie winds up being moderately enjoyable thanks to Tom Cruise sweating it out in the lead role.

While his work here doesn’t rival his best, it’s miles better than The Mummy, that shitstorm that put his career on pause this summer. Director Doug Liman, who teamed with Cruise on the sci-fi masterpiece Edge of Tomorrow, rips off Catch Me if You Can, The Wolf of Wall Street, Goodfellas, Blow, and many more in telling the story of the notorious TWA pilot turned pawn for the CIA. Inspired by Seal’s true story—and some of the more outlandish stuff depicted in the film actually happened—the movie starts with him grinding out flights for TWA, smuggling the occasional box of Cuban cigars and trying to support a family that includes wife Lucy (Sarah Wright).

During a layover, Seal is approached in a bar by Monty (Domhnall Gleeson), a possible arm for the CIA. After a brief discussion, Barry is given an opportunity to fly arms to South America as an unofficial courier for the U.S.A. (He’s set up with a fake flying company as a front.) The gig soothes the adrenaline junkie in Seal but doesn’t pay enough.

That’s where smuggling drugs for the Medellin drug cartel comes in, something Seal starts doing on the side. The movie depicts Pablo Escobar (Mauricio Mejia) and Jorge Ochoa (Alejandro Edda) as almost fun-loving goofballs, and Seal becomes regular pals with them. Along the way, Seal’s operation expands to include an entire airport in Mena, Arkansas, on property large enough to fit a training ground for the Contras. Seal basically has his hand in everything.

The movie is a whirlwind of activity, but skimpy on some of the details that could make it more than just a silly blast. The likes of Ronald Reagan and George Bush, Sr. are reduced to stock

news footage—although W. makes a brief appearance, portrayed by an actor.

One element clearly stolen from Goodfellas is the whole “breaking the fourth wall to narrate” tactic.

Liman is able to pull this off through a series of videotapes Seal makes when he’s on the run, and we see bits throughout the movie used as story framing devices. It’s a way to help out the viewer with all the different plot threads and time jumps.

Honestly, this story might’ve played better as an HBO or Netflix miniseries than a big motion picture.

It feels far too slick for the story, and needed some more meat on the bone. A good 10 hour running time probably wouldn’t even be enough to cover everything Seal got himself into. It feels too massive for a feature length running time.

Cruise brings his reliable movie star prowess to the project, and it can safely be said that, while the movie might get a little messy, it is never boring. That’s because Cruise, as he often does, puts his everything into the role. Gleeson is decent in his fictional representation of the CIA, providing some of the movie’s bigger laughs. Wright does all she can with a role that provides little for her to do.

American Made can’t seem to decide whether it’s an action movie, a dark comedy or a dramatic retelling of a messed-up life. It keeps up the balancing act until its final minutes, where everything comes to a crashing stop on a discordant note. Anybody who knows anything about Seal would know that things would take a dark turn, but the film’s final tonal shift is handled poorly. Still, you can do worse at the theater than seeing a cocaine-coated Cruise paying some kid for a bicycle and riding down the street, with the cocaine leaving a smoky powder trail. American Made has enough going for it not to be a waste of your time, but not enough to consider it anything more than moderately passable entertainment fare. Ω

First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers

Angelina Jolie directs the memoir of Loung Ung, who also wrote the screenplay, a Cambodian woman who, as a child, survived the genocide brought upon her country by the Khmer Rouge in the mid ’70s, after the Vietnam War. The result is a triumph for Jolie and Ung, who succeed in telling the story through Ung’s eyes as a child. Young Sareum Srey Moch is a movie miracle as Ung, a happy child the day the Khmer Rouge arrive in her town, marking her dad for death and causing her family to flee into the jungle. Jolie keeps the vantage point of the movie through the eyes of this child, ingeniously filming the landscape around her in a way a child would see it: as something beautiful being invaded by monsters. Moch is required to deliver every emotion in the role, and she delivers them in a way that would seem impossible for a child actress. The movie is terrifying, and it should be. It stands alongside 1984’s The Killing Fields as a fierce, unyielding depiction of this terrible time in human history. (Available for streaming on Netflix during a limited theatrical run.)

Now Netflix chips in on the effort to make us all forget that filmed adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower with this latest King effort, a powerhouse acting job for both Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood. They play Jessie and Gerald, a married couple who have hit tough times. They attempt to rekindle their relationship on a holiday excursion, one that involves her getting handcuffed to the bed.

Things go bad, like, really bad, and Jessie winds up in a truly precarious situation that involves starving, dehydrating and hallucinating. The original King novel, of course, finds a way for Gerald to stick around for the whole movie, even after a fatal heart attack, while flashbacks show us other traumas involving Jessie’s dad (Henry Thomas). The movie is, appropriately, hard to watch at times as a hungry dog comes by for a visit and Jessie searches for ways to get her hands out of those cuffs. (Hint: Things get bloody.) This is a career-best performance from Gugino, who carries most of the movie. Greenwood is allowed to get deranged in the role, and he does just that. Visits from a ghostly giant give the movie a supernatural twist, and are legitimately scary. (Available for streaming on Netflix.)

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

The benefit of a movie like Andy Muschietti’s It is that the director and his writers can keep some core themes that worked in the novel but streamline the narrative to make the story work a bit better 30 years after it was written. In that respect, the new It is a triumph. While the 1990 TV miniseries dealt with both the young and older versions of The Loser’s Club, the posse of kids that stand up to evil, the new It stands as Part One, completely dividing the kid and adult stories. There’s also a major time change, with the kids’ story taking place in the late ’80s instead of the ’50s. Thank you, Stranger Things. The core story remains the same: Children in Derry, Maine, have been disappearing for many years, and the film starts with the sad case of Georgie (Jackson Robert Scott), a little boy in a yellow rain slicker who follows his paper boat to the sewer drain and makes an unfortunate acquaintance, Pennywise, the sewer-dwelling clown, played as a savage beast by Bill Skarsgard. The kids are great. The standout is Sophia Lillis as Beverly Marsh. Lillis has that kind of leading-lady-ina-teen-film commanding screen presence. It: Part Two, with the adults, while not official yet, is a certainty.

If you thought Kingsman: The Secret Service was a bit over-the-top, and you liked that aspect of it, you’ll be happy to know that things were just getting started with Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of the Mark Millar/ Dave Gibbons graphic novel The Secret Service.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is an example of

a sequel pulling out all of the stops, going into severe overkill mode, and holding together quite nicely to deliver a fun time for those who like their movies a little nasty. It’s too long at 141 minutes, and a pug dies, but the action snaps with expert precision, and the cast kicks ass. That cast includes Taron Egerton as Eggsy, Harry Hart’s (Colin Firth) young recruit from the first film. The Kingsman, an underground, sharply dressed spy agency in England, remains in operation. Eggsy has settled down with a royal girlfriend (Hanna Alstrom), and has segued comfortably into the life of a secret agent. Then, things start sucking badly as missiles destroy Kingsman headquarters and strongholds, leaving behind only Eggsy and techy Merlin (Mark Strong). Eggsy and Merlin wind up in America, where they meet the Statesman, secret agent allies doing a similar spying service for the U.S.A. The task force includes Tequila (Channing Tatum), Ginger (Halle Berry) and Champ (Jeff Bridges). Harry, despite apparently dying in the first film, makes a comeback, and the movie is better for it.

Mother

Bill Nighy plays Inspector Kildare, commissioned by Scotland Yard to find the notorious Golem Killer, a Jack the Ripper-type serial killer. Based on a 1994 novel that incorporated actual historical figures like Karl Marx, Juan Carlos Medina’s movie is good-looking, and Nighy is a fun sort of cranky Sherlock Holmes. Problem is, the mystery itself isn’t that absorbing, and a side plot involving the murder trial of a local actress (Olivia Cooke) fails to engage. Granted, it is pretty cool that Medina somehow manages to stage a hypothetical scene where Karl Marx commits a very bloody murder. There are a few macabre moments, like that one, that work well. Not enough to make this anything really worth watching.

Cooke labors hard in the role of Lizzie Cree, a stage actress in a bad marriage who becomes an object of sympathy for Kildare as he goes through his list of suspects, who include a local actor/playwright, a doctor and, yes, Karl Marx.

The movie is weird, but it’s not weird enough, and Nighy’s decent performance is ultimately wasted. (Available for rent and download on iTunes and Amazon.com during a limited theatrical release.)

Writer-director Darren Aronofsky’s latest film, Mother!, is one helluva nutty movie. The film takes unabashedly nasty aim at relationships, the Bible, narcissism, celebrity, art, family, smoking and, oh, yeah, motherhood. By the time it’s over, you might not know exactly what went down, but you know that it landed on the side of cynicism—highly stylized, lunatic, entertaining cynicism. Jennifer Lawrence plays Mother, an apparently kindhearted partner to Him (Javier Bardem).

They live in an old-style country house out in the middle of nowhere. Him is a writer, going through some major writer’s block and occasionally speaking of having lost everything in the past to a fire. He has some sort of crystalized object on a stand that he claims empowered him to move on after the fire. It’s in a room nobody is allowed to enter alone.

They live a quiet life in their little Eden, Mother preparing meals while Him tortures himself, unable to produce a single word for his next great work. Then, there’s a knock at the door.

It’s Man (Ed Harris), soon to be followed by Woman (Michelle Pfeiffer), a strange couple who wind up houseguests thanks to Him’s hospitality, and much to the chagrin of Mother.

Man and Woman invade Mother’s space, with Man huffing cigarettes and frequently vomiting from illness while Woman swills alcohol and asks Mother extremely personal questions.

Later, after a rage-inspired sex session, Mother becomes pregnant, and Him is suddenly fertile with ideas. He writes his next big thing, and their home is besieged by agents, fans, religious zealots, paparazzi, former SNL cast members, policemen, soldiers, terrorists and fire. If there’s a takeaway from Mother!, it’s that Aronofsky doesn’t have the most pleasant attitudes toward celebrity and Sunday school.

olive my love I don’t love olives. I tolerate them when they’re an ingredient in something else, but the thought of popping one into my mouth or adding the juice to a martini is revolting to me. As a result, I’ve never developed a taste for martinis, mainly because of the strong association with olives. I think this martini-olive link has lurked in the back of mind whenever I’ve given any thought to the Foxy Olive bar on Mill Street.

I really have no basis for this. The name has no connection to the kinds of drinks served there, I can now confirm.

I remember, when I first heard about the bar, wondering what chance of success it had on the ground floor of the Lake Mill Lodge, a residential hotel of questionable character, where, at that time, at least, police calls seemed to outnumber tenants any given month.

Clearly the Foxy Olive has made a successful run, still going strong 10 years later. I paid them a visit for an after-work beer late on a Sunday afternoon and found a decent crowd for this typically slow day.

Good punk rock played overhead, matching the assorted band stickers plastered on several walls.

I know they have live music and DJs sometimes, but the place is small, and I wonder where even a solo artist might perform in the narrow space. Customers trended toward young, not derelict barflies, the opposite of what I imagine used to haunt this space during its time as the Lamplighter Lounge in years past.

Despite the cool factor, the drink selection does not offer a vast row of microbrew taps or artisanal craft cocktails.

PBR, Hamm’s and Miller High Life set the tone for beer, the retro, blue-collar brews adopted by the urban hip generation. One of the three taps offered a hoppy Fresh 14

Squeezed IPA, and I was glad to find it crisp and tasty. The shelves behind the bar could be described as average and were filled with a decent selection of brands you know, enough variety to make most cocktails. A vintage pinball machine offers affordable amusement, should you prefer not to sit at the bar or few tables.

Small works of art for sale decorated the wall behind me, and as I let my mind wander, I could easily see this bar in a bigger city—San Francisco, in particular.

The juxtaposition of old and run-down with expensive and new reminds me of The City, where I once saw someone defecating on the sidewalk on my way into a bar serving $18 beers.

Here I sat with a young, hip assortment of people who probably wouldn’t be caught dead in the Lake Mill Lodge upstairs, but certainly could fit in at the recently renovated Renaissance Hotel and Bundox Bocce across the street. A hundred yards in any direction from the nearby Patagonia store you could find a homeless person bedding down for the night. It’s funny how gentrification creeps in, one small pocket of city at a time, and the curious bedfellows that result.

The more I thought about it, my spurious association of olives and martinis—a drink associated with James Bond and the chi-chi set—with this, figuratively, grungy dive bar was ironic but appropriate: the young crowd that can afford to go out appropriating the cheap beer and a bar nestled next to low-income weekly housing, while yards away the corner liquor store peddles rotgut to regulars. At least my beer was a very reasonable $4. Ω

Back in the ’90s, the Truckee Meadows was home to a pair of Indian restaurants with very different styles. One specialized in South Indian favorites, while the other focused on flavors from the central North regions. Recently opened Cafe Masala in Sparks offers a hybrid menu of dishes from the north and south, as well as American staples, including burgers, sandwiches, salads, entrees and a kids’ menu.

We began with a plate of three vegetable samosas stuffed with curried potato and peas ($6.99), and another trio filled with curried chicken ($7.99). The fried turnovers were crispy and fragrant, served with a pair of sauces—one lightly sweet and the other with plenty of cilantro and a spicy kick. The veggie samosas were full of smooth, savory perfection, but the chicken ones were a little dry. A liberal dose of both sauces added some moisture and a ton of flavor.

A classic dish of puri baaji also featured a mash of curried potato and peas, served with three puffy pillows of flat bread and a creamy coconut relish ($7.99). The bread was light and airy, and the relish added a nice contrast to each bite. We also tried a South Indian dosa—a crepe—filled with the same curry, more coconut relish, and a cup of sambar—spicy lentil—soup ($7.99). The crepe was enormous, dwarfing its veggie filling, and was delicious on its own.

Made with a mix of wheat and black lentil flours, the initial nose was somewhat floral, followed by a slightly sour finish. It sounds odd, but it worked well with the stuffing ingredients. As good as the dosa was, it was almost eclipsed by the sambar soup—spicy, herbal, chunky, fantastic.

Bold fusion

For me, it’s always a toss-up between murgh makhani—butter chicken—and tikka masala—a spiced curry dish—when trying a new Indian joint, but, this time, the makhani ($9.99) won out. I added orders of beef curry ($10.99) and pork vindaloo ($10.99), mostly because I’ve only occasionally encountered beef on an Indian menu, and the pork was a first for me. All were served with basmati rice and naan flatbread. The chicken’s sauce of tomato, butter and cream was spot-on and decadent. The pork and beef chunks were each cooked in an array of herbs and spices in a base of ghee (clarified butter).

All of the meat entrees were tasty, if a bit mild. Our server seemed surprised when we added a healthy amount of chili oil to each.

The naan was perhaps the only real disappointment. Lacking the blistered, puffy, crisp-yet-soft texture that makes tandoori-baked naan so appealing, it had the texture of pizza crust—perfectly fine bread, but not the naan I’m looking for.

In an effort to not ignore the American side of the menu, we sampled a 14-ounce coffee-crusted ribeye steak ($22.99) served with soup or salad, steamed vegetables and choice of rice pilaf, fries or mashed potatoes. Cooked just a bit under medium rare, the meat was tender and juicy, with the spicy coffee rub adding more than a bit of pizazz. The veggies were al dente. The mash was buttery, and another serving of the sambar soup cranked it up several notches. Having capped an Indian meal with a really decent steak, my mind has been cross-culturally blown. Namaste. Ω

ongratulations on your new hometown. It’s a popular choice these days. In case you’re wondering what to do with your free time, here is a guide brought to you by accident, clinically diagnosed ADD, and a seven-hour plane ride.

What began as a simple 1,200-word article on offbeat social groups morphed into a weird and massive flowchart somewhere over Colorado when I stumbled across a paragraph about Reno in Southwest’s Spirit magazine. The blurb featured Lake Tahoe, the Atlantis and the car from Titanic that lives at the National Automobile Museum less than five minutes from my home. This last item was quite a shock. In my nine years in Reno, I never heard about—let alone visited—the Titanic car. Thankfully, this problem has been fixed … but maybe not for you. Perhaps your Titanic car is still undiscovered. It could be bar crawls and all-you-can-eat sushi if you’re new.

Twist of fate Fate Awaits The members of Fate Awaits really want you to know that they are not a “kid band.”

Although their ages range from 12 to 15, they can rock with the best of them, and they take their musical journey seriously.

Fate Awaits is an alternative rock band comprised of brothers Landon McErquiaga-Gray, 15, and Manning Gray, 12, who play bass and guitar; drummer Scott Courts, 13; and vocalist Miyah Walker, 14. They found each other at Reno Rock Camp, a summer music camp that helps youth learn and improve their musical talents. They won the Forte Award for best rock band. By the time Fate Awaits formed in November of last year, the members already had several years of musical practice under their belts.

Landon said the band’s name came easy to them.

“We were in the car, and Manning was just talking about it, and thought of it,” he said, jokingly adding, “It was fate.”

The band has recorded more than three hours of cover songs, plays regularly at local establishments and events, and has opened for bands such as Famous Last Words. The artists these young musicians have covered run the gamut of classic and modern rock, from Jimi Hendrix, Pat Benatar and Nirvana to Pierce the Veil, Halestorm and We the Kings.

They’ve performed at bars like Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor, and Walker said that sometimes their age does come into play when they have to convince a bar employee that they are there to perform. She said her own teachers are sometimes in disbelief over her concert venues.

“At a lot of our gigs, a lot of people are surprised at how old we are,” she said.

Fate Awaits is currently working on a still-untitled LP, writing their own music.

They practice at the Musician Rehearsal Center in Sparks and take music lessons outside of band practice. As a sophomore, Landon will soon be taking AP Music Theory. All of the band members are eager to learn what they can about their craft.

They study the music of classical artists, including Beethoven, whose quote they feature on some of their merchandise: “I will seize fate by the throat; it shall certainly never wholly overcome me.”

“Beethoven’s lit,” said Landon.

Writing their own music adds a new dimension to the band, and they try to be encouraging of one another’s creativity.

“We do argue, but it’s like we’re siblings,” said Walker.

“It’s good knowing we’re all here for each other,” said Manning. They all agree that no one else quite understands what it’s like to be in a band and sacrifice normal “teen” things, like slumber parties or high school events. Even so, they don’t seem bothered by this. They celebrate their birthdays together and are often in one another’s company outside of band practice.

Lately, they’ve started to be recognized out in public, and they’re developing an avid following on social media.

It’s all part of the bigger picture. When asked what their dreams are, they speak excitedly at once: “To be famous,” said Court.

“To get better and improve,” said Walker. “Going on tours and having this be a stable career.”

“My dream is to write music that helps people,” said Manning. “Like when people tell bands, ‘This song saved my life.’ I want to be someone else’s inspiration.”

“I like that,” Landon said to his bandmates. “We do want to make a career out of this. I love what we do and hope it lasts forever.” Ω

A question of lust I am a 32-year-old woman who has never been in a relationship with a man I’m actually attracted to. The men I’ve ended up with really pursued me, and they were all smart, funny and kind, so I thought it was shallow not to date them because I wasn’t that into their looks. Each time, I eventually found myself repulsed by the guy and eyeing other men. Of course, that brought things to an end. How important is physical attraction in a relationship?

When you’ve got a position to fill— in your life or the workplace—it’s important to bring in somebody who meets the essential requirements.

Of course, sexual attraction isn’t everything. But without it, you and another person are best suited for a relationship like “friends,” “neighbors” or “people who give each other a friendly wave in the carport.” Experimental psychologist Gurit Birnbaum finds evidence from across social psychology and evolutionary psychology that the “sexual system”—sexual desire— and the “attachment system”— emotional bonding—work together.

In fact, she explains, it seems sexual desire “has been ‘exploited’ by evolutionary processes” to promote enduring emotional bonds between partners. Basically, evolution bribes romantic partners with nooky so they’ll stay together and care for their kids, improving the chances that the little buggers survive to pass on their genes.

It’s important to find somebody you have serious hots for from the start, because maintaining a sex crush on your partner is actually vital throughout the relationship stages. Birnbaum explains that sexual desire motivates partners to keep “investing resources” in each other and the relationship—beyond sexytime. Additionally, after the initial hottity-hots die down, still wanting to get it on with your partner seems to provide a “buffer” for poor communication skills and less-than-desirable personality traits, such as emotional instability.

So, no, you wouldn’t be “shallow” to date only men you’re attracted to. You’d be doing the wise and kind thing—keeping yourself from yet another doomed relationship with some nice but meh guy.

Mood poisoning My boyfriend broke up with me five months ago. When I’m going to sleep at night, I find myself mentally writing him hate letters, detailing what’s wrong with him.

I’m relieved that I’m not crying over him anymore, but I wonder whether I’m making things worse with this nightly litany of his shortcomings.

Psychologists call what you’ve been doing “ruminating”—a form of over-think that involves obsessively replaying events, problems or feelings. The term comes from a yicky place—a cow’s rumen, a stomach area where it partially digests food, only to throw it up so it can rechew the food again. Yum, huh?

The late psychologist Susan Nolen-Hoeksema found that rumination can lead to depression— probably because it’s like being on a hamster wheel of hopelessness.

However, the hopelessness comes not from reflecting on your feelings or problems but from doing it pointlessly—that is, rerunning those events and feelings and generating only frown lines, not insight.

Healthy reflection on the past involves making it mean something for the future—turning the unfortunate events of, say, an ill-advised relationship into a guide for a wiser course in your next one. So, for example, when you find yourself venting about this guy, stop and turn the lens on yourself. Take responsibility for how you might have seen or done things differently. That’s different from blaming yourself. By telling yourself “In the future, I have to take a closer look at this or that,” you are protecting yourself instead of pointlessly raging.

To get off the beddy-bye rage train, just keep redirecting your thoughts to the positive—people and things in your life you’re grateful for and ideas for moving forward. Sure, guys you date will probably ask why you and your ex broke up, but a few words should suffice. Nobody wants to see you cast a glance at the clock and pull a huge parchment scroll from your purse. Ω

Las Vegas arts champion Michele Quinn is a gallery owner, curator and art administrator in Las Vegas. She co-curated the 2016 exhibit Tilting the Basin at Reno’s Nevada Museum of Art and developed the $40 million art collection at CityCenter in Las Vegas. What does Las Vegas’s public art scene look like lately?

I think it’s sort of dramatically changed.

Obviously, my point of reference always starts with CityCenter—large-scale installations available to the public for free. It’s continued to evolve. We just finished with [mural festival] Life is Beautiful. They did a large, major outdoor mural. … Last but not least, we just installed the Ugo Rondinone project in the desert, 15 minutes outside of the city. That’s become an international conversation. It’s been received by people worldwide. People from Spain are traveling to visit that installation.

Japanese magazines have had it on their cover. Vogue did a photo shoot on it.

How about the gallery scene? A lot of good galleries have come and gone over the years and had trouble gaining a foothold.

I’ve had four galleries here. The gallery scene is still a struggle. It was starting to gain momentum, and we all got hit by the economy. We’re working on building a museum here. I’m on the board for Art Museum at Symphony Park. We have a partner on the project that has

Do you have a sense yet of what the programming might be like?

It wouldn’t be the same as NMA. We are a unique city. As much as I love Reno, we are very different from Reno.

There will be shared resources, shared exhibitions, that kind of thing. As far as programming—we don’t even have any walls yet. … It’s all very preliminary.

You’re speaking to high school and college students while you’re in Northern Nevada. Could you share one or two of the points you’ll talk with those audiences about?

I think some of it is just engaging with them about the project here. I spoke at an arts high school here last week and was surprised by how many people hadn’t been to CityCenter. The terrorists at home OK, Twitler. You say your first job as Prez is to protect us. You really wanna do that? Of course you don’t. You’re lying. As always. But fuck it. I’ve got a simple, three-step plan for you.

1. Take all of your pathetic travel bans, wipe your ass with them, and flush ’em down the dumper. You know how many people from Libya, Yemen and Somalia have attacked us in, say, forever? Zero. You know who is considerably more dangerous to Americans than Muslims from abroad? Your very own demographic, Dum Dum. Old, crabby white men who get their spiritual sustenance from (a) Fux News and (b) sports. You’re dangerous. And you keep proving it.

2. Tell Mitch and Paul to do two things. First, ditch this POS bill that some jerkoff from South Carolina is pushing, the SHARE act (Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act). This NRA-

backed horror would make it much easier to purchase silencers, under the guise of protecting hunters’ hearing from explosive damage.

You know what, hunters? Wear some goddamn ear plugs. What if Stephen Paddock had silencers on his weapons? How many more hundreds would have been murdered in that situation? The raw carnage would have been staggering.

3. Then, tell Mitch and Paul to do something about the purchase of semi-automatic weapons, which can be converted into fully automatic machine guns. We all heard Mr. Paddock’s full tilt automatic burp guns going bap bap bap bap rapid fire, as he basically shot human fish in a party barrel. “‘No way to prevent this,’ says the one nation where this regularly happens,” as the Onion reports.

I realize that step 3 is a complete fantasy. How sad is that? The Rethuglican Party is so in bed with

the National Rifle Association that there’s not a snowball’s chance that any meaningful restrictive weapon legislation will be introduced in either chamber. This is horribly depressing. Think about the level of corruption on display.

It’s appalling. The Republicans of D.C would rather please their gun-sucking masters than protect us from getting slaughtered by psychos. Why do people keep voting for these assholes? So to hell with your limp prayers and condolences.

They’re worthless! Do something, fercrissake!

But since nothing will happen, the only thing we can do is accept this mass murder and accept that it will happen again. Fine. Wonderful. Might be a good time to just avoid big crowds. Screw it. You say with that attitude, the terrorists win? Agreed. I’m just surprised that the terrorists turned out to look just like me. Ω
