Roll with it Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I know it’s still the middle of June, but I’m looking forward to July, and not just because, if recent patterns continue, we’re likely to get some nice winter weather. Nothing quite like a nice midsummer blizzard here in the desert.

July is a big month here at the RN&R. It’s the month of Rollin’ on the River, our summer concert series down at Wingfield Park, right along the Truckee River—which, in case you haven’t heard or been down there and peeped yourself recently—is indeed seriously rolling. It’s rolling fast and high, like a river with a head full of MDMA. It just wants to hug everybody—but it’s a river, so be careful.

Anyway, we’re really excited about the concert series, which again this year is a celebration of local music, featuring some of the best local acts, like Jelly Bread, Mojo Green and the Sextones—great, fun local performers that are accessible enough that you can still bring the kids, bring Grandma, bring your friend who hates everything, and they’ll all still have a good time.

That’s every Friday in July starting at 5. Check out the promo on page 10 for details.

And I’m extra excited about Still Rollin’, a late-night after-party concert series launching this year.

It’s a weekly showcase for some of the best music in the valley that’s too weird, too loud, too outlandish to bombard on the river. But it’s great stuff—rock ’n’ roll, heavy metal, punk rock, whatever—and I’m stoked that we’re partnering with Shea’s Tavern for the series. Shea’s is like a giant chunk of salt in the otherwise increasingly bland, gentrified neighborhood that is Reno’s midtown. Again, check out the promo on page 10 for details, including the complete lineup.

Pot boiler Re “Pot tale of the week” (Upfront, May 25): I’m glad Dennis Myers listened to my testimony on Nevada’s Early Start bill for recreational marijuana, but he seems to have missed my point. Myers seemed to think I was suggesting that legalization generates black market activity. In fact, as he pointed out, prohibition and not legalization leads to black market activity. In addition, even where marijuana is not prohibited, high prices also lead to black market sales (just as Myers tells us still happens with tobacco).

When I testified against Early Start, I was countering the pervasive myth that if we wait to roll out retail stores we will “create” a black market. As long as marijuana is prohibited in other states, and as long as medical marijuana is available at a lower price, the black market will thrive here. Therefore, there is no reason not to take the time provided in Question 2 to develop thoughtful regulations before starting retail sales.

Myers referred to Nevadans for Informed Marijuana Regulation as “prohibitionist.” For the record, we’re not looking for prohibition.

Our primary goal is to protect bystanders from exposure to marijuana smoke and vapor. We also want to prevent the industry from actively promoting marijuana use and misleading consumers.

Assuming that the memos were not classified (though it seems odd that it would not be classified even on the confidential level), there is 18 U.S.C. § 641, which makes it a crime to steal, sell, or convey “any record, voucher, money, or thing of value of the United States or of any department or agency thereof.”

Harvard law professor emeritis Alan Dershowitz: “The president can, as a matter of constitutional law, direct the Attorney General, and his subordinate, the Director of the FBI, tell them what to do, whom to prosecute and whom not to prosecute. Indeed, the president has the constitutional authority to stop the investigation of any person by simply pardoning that person. ... Nor is it an obstruction of justice to ask for loyalty from the director of the FBI ... We should just stop talking about obstruction of justice, there’s no plausible case there. ... I thought [the leak] shows a lot of cowardice. The head of the FBI, the guy is supposed to be a strong and powerful guy and he’s afraid of a couple seagulls.”

Yep, Comey really delivered a kick to the nutsack—his own nutsack. And that ain’t easy to pull off, even for a grandstanding coward like Comey.

But, you can’t win ’em all, Bruce.

Disappointing, but nothing a spliff and a glass of Jack can’t numb out.

The remedy is to go against one’s natural tendency and request more information from those sources you don’t tend to agree with.

This can give you different viewpoints and may well lead to a better understanding of each other. You might possibly even change your mind. Are we being driven into narrow mindedness and division by algorithms? Food for thought.

The era of bad feelings A Sparks businessperson named Kelly Smith recently penned an essay for the Reno Gazette-Journal: “The number one purpose of the press and the news media is to keep government officials in check. To keep them honest and hold them to their word. It’s a constitutionally guaranteed right that the news media has been blessed with, unlike almost any other industry. But what has happened? The news is now almost totally in bed with government and most noticeably, almost completely sided with the current political left. ... There are numerous stories that are always slanted against [Trump]. ... Why does [journalism] take sides? Because they get rewarded for doing so. They get special perks, access, privileges and money. ... You want to be trusted again? It’s easy: do what you’re supposed to do. Speak the truth and bring down all of those high-minded government officials, pointing out where they’ve gone wrong, showing them what they were elected to do. And if they weren’t elected to do the right thing, point this out. … Use that power in the manner it was intended and build our country as the founding fathers envisioned.”

It should be noted that Mr. Smith objects to journalists being “in bed with government” but faults journalism for its coverage of Trump, the head of government.

It is apparent that his objection is not really to taking sides, but to journalists not taking his side.

He has an incorrect view of the intent of the first Congress in writing the First Amendment. It was not “to keep government officials in check.” That’s one function of the press, nowhere mentioned in the Constitution.

The First Amendment says it is the right of the press to publish without interference from government. Mr. Smith should consider the nature of the post-colonial press as it existed during the first Congress. It was irresponsible, often vicious, and partisan, sometimes subsidized by parties or politicians—and the first Congress wanted it protected that way, believing if all have their say, the public would be well served. The notion that the First Amendment was written to protect objective reporting is silly. It didn’t exist then.

The second president, John Adams, was the first wag-the-dog president, stirring up a war hysteria against France based on invented grievances to curry favor with Britain. Adams also put government in the service of religion, sharply offending the sensibilities of the founding generation. Public protests resulted. Adams and his allies pushed the Alien and Sedition Acts through Congress and used them to punish his critics and force newspapers out of business. One editor died in prison, his case never heard. It was, in other words, a time of presidential excess like now.

And journalism responded strongly, as it is doing now.

Few of us want to be players in today’s awful politics, but dangerous men call for stronger scrutiny than usual.

Stories slanted against Trump? One person’s slant is another’s scrutiny. Trump is uninformed, immature, has a poor mind, is contemptuous of women, plays our people against each other, demonizes religions and races, all of which fit the conduct of today’s Republican Party. Intense scrutiny is the appropriate response to such behavior. Ω

Democrats used their majorities well Much to the delight and surprise of many progressives, Nevada’s legislative Democrats emerged victorious from the 2017 session on multiple levels. They took a firm stance against school vouchers, refusing to cave when offered a “deal” that they rightly characterized as containing nothing more than crumbs. In response, the Republican caucuses refused to vote for the budget bills, expecting Gov. Sandoval to produce vetoes that never occurred. The Republicans may have kept a campaign promise to the wealthy parents who wanted taxpayer subsidies to continue sending their children to private and religious schools but instead they ended up with a series of awful votes they will have to answer for in the 2018 campaigns.

The only budget bill that provided some drama in the last few days was the capital improvements budget which needed a twothirds vote the Democrats could not produce on their own. But even that $270 million budget wasn’t seriously in question as the Governor surely wouldn’t let the jobs bill

die. And Senator Heidi Gansert, R-Reno, could hardly return to her high-paying job at University of Nevada, Reno without funding for the university’s new engineering school.

Although many other bills were lost to the governor’s veto pen, the Democratic majorities in the Assembly and Senate accomplished a substantial part of the progressive agenda, reflecting Nevada’s status as a blue state, particularly in areas of health care, green energy and criminal justice reform. They even found a way to partially rescue the Washoe County School District from yet another unforeseen budget shortfall, providing one-time “bridge funding” of $5 million to give the District time to adjust to a new way of calculating the funding formula.

There were some excellent local bills sponsored by Washoe County legislators that passed, including Assembly Bill 379 from Assemblymember Amber Joiner, D-Reno. The bill authorizes local governments to create a parks, trails and open space district. The concept was pushed by the One

Truckee River collaboration as a potential method of raising funds to create a linear park district along the Truckee, protecting our natural resources and providing quality recreational opportunities.

AB 203 from Assm. Joiner and Sen. Julia Ratti, D-Sparks, restores local government’s ability to regulate cemeteries, allowing them to protect human remains from being disinterred to make way for development without a careful review. The bill grew out of a controversy over the Hillside Cemetery near UNR, home to the remains of members from Reno’s most prominent historical families. Developers had proposed demolishing the cemetery to make way for new student housing.

The Governor did veto several Democratic priorities targeting workers including Senate Bill 196, which would have mandated that large employers provide a minimum of three days of sick leave to their employees and several bills to allow state workers to engage in collective bargaining.

Sandoval also vetoed SB 265, landmark

legislation from Clark County Democratic Sen. Yvanna Cancela that broke new ground by forcing elements of transparency on Pharma and attacking arbitrary price increases on life-saving medicines for diabetics. However, in typical legislative tradition in Nevada, key elements of that bill resurfaced in another bill during the last few days of the session, becoming part of SB 539 from Senate Republican leader Michael Roberson of Clark County. That bill was approved with the governor’s blessing.

Despite the prevailing wisdom from Nevada’s political class, Democrats emerged from an on-time session united behind their major policy efforts. Although Republicans had declared there would be no budgets passed without funding for the ESA school vouchers, their promise proved hollow without the governor’s veto to back it up. In the end, Sandoval cared more about Nevada’s welfare as a whole than a small number of vocal parents who wanted taxpayer subsidies for their childrens’ private school educations. Ω

The market trumps climate change The days of Solyndra and other government-subsidized green boondoggles are over. A new dawn without hysteria and based on the realities of free markets and consumer choice is beginning.

I have been called a denialist because I question whether the emperor really has clothes. The empire is ruled by regulatory Malthusian limits to growth and the ironclad law of the precautionary principle. As EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt said after the president’s announcement, the choice between jobs and the environment is a false choice. You can have both economic growth and a clean environment.

Capitalism is all about doing more with less. Capitalism is all about efficiencies. It is natural that free markets become cleaner because efficiency brings cleanliness.

Capitalist production is the only means of production that has raised the global standard of living while at the same time cleaning the environment. The poor are not really poor, they are only getting rich more slowly.

If anything, government is inefficient, often arbitrary and short-sighted, and loaded with the wrong incentives that result in poor environmental outcomes.

Trump’s pullout from Paris caused such hysteria among the elites because he challenged the religion of environmentalism, and the movement for world government at the same time. Human civilization itself is the original sin, we are all energy sinners, and the apocalypse is approaching. Only world government, protested as merely “voluntary” now, but over time sure to be mandatory, can save mankind.

We must sacrifice our obscene wealth and independence and eat the organic food communion to be saved.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, sword of the Holy Roman Empire’s Archangel Michael against Satanic Russia, is a related mythos Trump is clearly demolishing.

Elon Musk stormed out of Trump’s Economic Policy Council after Trump’s announcement. So far, Tesla has been

a good example of a state-subsidized green manufacturer. But much of what Musk and the entire environmental movement dream of depends on his ability to engineer a major breakthrough in battery technology. It has not happened.

Aquion Energies, another government subsidized green energy storage battery company, filed Chapter 11 in March.

Musk is an extraordinary visionary, but his visions have to produce viable battery solutions soon, because renewables like wind and solar will not work on a large scale without massive energy storage to produce reliable energy without the wind and sun.

Angela Merkel’s Germany has pushed the green agenda of wind and solar with feed in tariffs and other subsidies. Germany though is unique because it is surrounded by developed countries which can provide energy when its renewables’ grid slows down.

Ironically, Germany is now replacing the nuclear plants it shuttered after

Fukushima with coal fired power plants, keeping American coal minors working.

An industrial green energy grid will not work in America because Canada and Mexico cannot supply us with enough energy when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing like Germany’s neighbors can. Trump is saying America doesn’t need to be in the same club with losers like Germany.

Nuclear energy is completely carbonfree, but regulatory barriers and outsized fears have crippled nuclear power in recent years. New nuclear plants will be smaller, cheaper and even safer. They won’t require massive water use or generate much waste. Trump’s pullout from the Paris Accords may bring nuclear back into the competitive mix.

In the meantime, petroleum—especially natural gas—and coal are still king.

They are the engines of economic growth that Americans asked for when they elected Trump president. He has now given it to them. Ω

Former regeNt charged The Sparks city attorney’s office on June 5 brought two charges against University of Nevada, Reno art professor Howard Rosenberg, a former Nevada regent and Washoe County school board member. They stemmed from an April 3 incident at Dilworth Middle School.

The complaints allege that Rosenberg, while making an official visit to Dilworth as part of supervision of a UNR student teacher, disciplined a student without authority. They also charged Rosenberg with trespass. The complaint says he “willfully remained” on the property after being warned not to trespass, but other sources say he was at the school on official business and signed in and was welcomed when he arrived.

In an interview with KRNV News, student Luis Medina said, “He pulled my ear right here”—Medina took hold of his ear above the earlobe—“and after that he pulled my sweater right here and made me get up and he took me to the office.

And he told me if I wanted to live to the age of 14 I better plant it or sit down.” Medina also quoted Rosenberg as saying, “Shut the fuck up.”

At his June 13 trial, Rosenberg’s attorney Robert Fahrendort gave a different account. He said Rosenberg observed students allegedly playing shuffleboard with a pair of scissors on a table. He intervened to halt the hazardous activity and took Medina to the principal’s office.

Sparks City Attorney Chet Adams said that “the allegation is that Rosenburg pulled the student by the ear to the office.”

Rosenberg attorney Robert Fahrendorf responded, “Said statement is incorrect. Without any qualification, Mr. Rosenberg did not take the child by the ear to the office.”

News reports, all apparently derived from Adams’ statements, used different kinds of verbiage to say that Rosenberg allegedly took the student to the principal’s office by the ear—“led the child by the ear to the office” (KRNV), “walking a 13-year-old student to the principal’s office by his ear” (Associated Press), “grabbing a 13-year-old student by the ear” (KOLO), “pulled a 13-year-old student by the ear while taking him to the principal’s office” (RG-J).

Adams declined to say whether there was video footage of any of the incident: “I’m not at liberty to discuss the evidence in the case at this point of the proceedings.”

Fahrendorf said, “It is my understanding that there is no video from the classroom. There is video of the hallways of the school and of what appears to be the area adjoining the principal’s office. The videos ... show Mr. Rosenberg and the student exit the classroom, walk down each hallway and enter the area of the principal’s office. At no time on the videos does Mr. Rosenberg touch the student.”

At Rosenberg’s June 13 trial, he pleaded no contest and was sentenced to a $500 fine and court administrative fees. Wearing dark glasses from two eye surgeries last week, he remained silent while Fahrendorf spoke for him. Medina and his mother were in the courtroom and were given a chance to comment but chose to remain silent.

Several well wishers attended the trial and greeted Rosenberg when he entered the courtroom.

The complaints against Rosenberg were signed by senior assistant city attorney Thomas R.C. Wilson III, who conducted the investigation.

Following the trial, Rosenberg returned to UNR. The 82-year old professor submitted retirement papers later in the day.

When he steps down, he will have taught for 50 years at UNR and 55 years altogether. He is a familiar figure in the community in part because he spent many years as a film critic on KTVN News. He has also been a consultant to the U.S. Army during summer periods.

Healthy legislature Lawmakers tried to protect state from D.C. In all likelihood, the 2017 Nevada Legislature will be remembered for its attention to health care issues, even if all its health work product does not survive.

With the nation’s capital in tumult, some measures were adopted in part to protect Nevadans from possible actions by Congress and Donald Trump.

“We won in just about every category,” said the Nevada Women’s Lobby’s Marlene Lockard.

Probably the biggest accomplishment of all was enactment of a “Medicaid for all” health care plan, which was largely overlooked by journalists inside the state while creating a fuss from coast to coast.

“Nevada Is Considering a Revolutionary Health Care Experiment” is the way New York Magazine headlined its report, and the Los Angeles Times called the Nevada plan “a landmark Medicaid-for-all healthcare model.”

The measure—called the Nevada Care Plan (NCP)—would create a state health care program in case Congress repeals the Affordable Care Act. And other measures specified benefits from

the ACA that would be guaranteed by the Nevada health plan.

At this writing, Gov. Brian Sandoval has not yet announced whether he will sign the measure creating NCP, sponsored by Washoe Assemblymember Michael Sprinkle, but even if he vetoes it, the lawmakers have sent a message that states have options that do not depend on Congress. At a time when other states have been considering Medicare-for-all plans, the novelty of going the Medicaid way has captured wide attention. It would mean lower costs because Medicaid pays physicians less while providing what Alternet news service called “more robust” benefits. The four-page bill would allow Nevadans to use their Affordable Care Act credits toward Medicaid.

Trade sites that cover the health care industry were analyzing the Nevada measure, with Health Payer Intelligence reporting, “The bill would allow applicants who are currently eligible for advance payments of premium tax-credits or cost

sharing reductions to use those funds to purchase their Nevada Care Plan.

However, left-leaning states are watching Nevada to see what the more centralist state does and could potentially follow suit if Nevada tests the waters.”

While sweating out the weekend wondering if the governor would veto or sign, sponsor Sprinkle said, “I recognized this is all part of the process but am certainly anxious for a decision to be made.”

While Nevada was taking this action, the state’s senior U.S. senator, Dean Heller, was working in D.C. to phase out Medicaid in seven years, a stance that brought concern from his fellow Republican, Gov. Sandoval.

Another measure that brought Nevada wide attention is a program under which the state will track insulin pricing. This bill drew the alarmed attention of the pharmaceutical industry. “Big pharma had in there 12 lobbyists,” said Lockard.

The measure, which had died at the hands of a Sandoval veto when it was sponsored by Sen. Yvanna Cancela, was brought back to life, its language dumped into a similar but weaker measure sponsored by Sen. Michael Roberson, and approved, requiring insulin manufacturers to disclose their profits so the state can track them.

The bill was enacted in spite of the indifference of powerful diabetes patient lobby groups.

ic first tried cannabis as a college sophomore.

That was in the 1970s, at a Doc and Merle Watson concert in Deep Gap, North Carolina, near where he grew up. He’s 63 now and lives in Reno. Looking back, he said the effects were comparable to that of the Buddhist meditation he now practices.

“I just remember it being so liberating,” he said. “I was in the moment. I was joyful to be alive.”

As a pot-smoking senior—or, more often, a pot-gummy-bear-munching senior—“Vic,” who asked that we not use his real name, is not an anomaly. A 2016 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the age demographics of users have changed quite a bit over the last 15 years. Since 2002, the number of teen marijuana users has decreased 10 percent, and people in the 35 to 44 bracket are now more likely to partake than their teenage kids are. Use among the 45 to 54 set has jumped almost 50 percent. As the Washington Post put it, “Among those ages 55 to 64, it’s jumped by a whopping 455 percent (no, that’s not a typo).” And one local dispensary rep said she routinely sees clients in their 80s.

Vic and his friends proceeded to smoke pot on occasion beyond college, and in addition to the joyful, liberated feeling it provided, there were a couple of other things that colored their experiences. For one thing, they thought it seemed less harmful than alcohol, and they saw some hypocrisy in that.

“Most people who I have experienced in my life who smoke pot and enjoy it are not aggressive at all,” Vic said.

“Alcohol tends to have this curve, where it’s all joyful and everything, and then it starts to go down, and you feel heavy and angry, and that comes to the surface. … I’ve met a lot of mean drunks in my life, but I’ve never met a mean

pothead.” As a young adult, he lived near a military base.

Close by, he said, there were bars where soldiers drank and contracted services from prostitutes.

“There were shootings and stabbings galore,” he recalled. “I just couldn’t understand why anyone would choose that state of being, as opposed to something that was peaceful and kind and fun-loving.”

Another thing about smoking pot was the reputation it could earn a young North Carolinian in the ’70s. “In my area, if you smoked pot and you were a hippie, you were anti-American and anti-Vietnam,” Vic said. “So you weren’t a good American if you opted to [partake.]” He kept his hair short, didn’t dress much like a hippie, and kept a low profile, but he saw some peers arrested and sent to jail.

“A couple of guys were dealing out of their room, and they got busted,” he said. “And they didn’t have anything but, like, an ounce. An ounce is something like a sandwich bag, but you’re talking about handcuffs, police. … It would really anger me, because the people who made the decisions about my freedom to choose pot were right-wing, Christian alcoholics, the ones who were enforcing and making the laws.”

Vic, who is gay, moved in 1980 to New York City, where he was pleased to discover a thriving gay culture and a happening party scene. He tried cocaine and LSD, and had positive experiences with both. “I never felt like I was an addict,” he said. “I felt like I was using recreational drugs, but I never missed work. I never borrowed money. I never called in sick. … And I never thought it denigrated who I was as an individual. My experiences about being whole and happy and connected were even elevated to a higher level on LSD and cocaine.”

A look inside the changing demographics of cannabis users in Nevada Vic said he abstained from drugs altogether during periods of time when others were in his care, including his 24 years as a high school science teacher. “I wanted to genuinely show the kids that you can be outgoing, loving, happy without anything at all,” he said. More recently, he abstained when he was a caretaker for his mother until her death in 2011.

Vic moved to Reno in 2014, where, he said, “I wasn’t going to walk out on the street to ask for some pot.” He attended Burning Man, and there he asked a friend for some pot, which he found surprisingly potent. “I thought I saw God,” he laughed.

“Then I started to get educated,” he said. “I have joint disease in both thumbs. I have a compressed spine in my lower L2s and L3s, and just general old-age joint issues.”

Ibuprofen didn’t help, and he wanted to avoid opioids.

Vic promptly got a medical card. For the first time in more than 40 years, he was a legal user. When he first stood in line at a dispensary in Sun Valley, he cried with relief, remembering the days when using marijuana made him a deviant and a criminal.

This time around, he said, “I felt like I was doing the right thing—and not feeling guilty about it or that I had to sneak around. The validation came in seeing a dispensary almost like I see a McDonald’s. I could walk in and feel good about getting any product that they had to sell, that I liked. So, my thoughts were, ‘God, [my college dorm mates] were thrown in jail, and here I am buying it with a card.’”

New users Sierra Wellness Connection is a dispensary in a nondescript, brick strip mall on East Second Street. In its tiny front entrance, laser-cut pendant lamps decorate the ceiling, and a scrolling digital menu lists the prices of items such as Truckee River Kush, Snuffleupagus Pre-rolls, capsules, “gummiez,” strawberry crunch bars, “Agave TinQture” and avocado lemongrass body cream.

From behind glass, a receptionist welcomes clients warmly. Once they’re checked in, they enter a retail area that looks a bit like a Starbucks, where employees wear lanyards and black scrubs. “Money always seems to be the number-one goal for anybody, no matter what business they’re in,” she said, and the profit motives of dispensaries—plus the fact that she likes her current product and its current price—are enough to deter her indefinitely.

Magical mystery cure?

Let’s pause here for a moment to list all of the ailments potentially treatable by marijuana that sources for this article have mentioned so far: joint disease, spinal compression, autism, behavioral issues in children, sleep problems, PTSD, menstrual cramps, cancer, liver disease, arthritis and diabetes. Additional qualifying conditions in Nevada—the list varies from state to state—include AIDS, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy.

Is marijuana starting to sound like a magical panacea? Is its list of touted benefits too long to be true?

Medical marijuana is nothing new. Its cultivation and use go back thousands of years.

Accoridng to the 2010 documentary film, What if Cannabis Cured Cancer, “Cannabis was often prescribed by doctors—and was part of every medical

But how could one substance really be effective in treating so many ailments? “Cannabis has been shown to kill cancer cells in the laboratory,” according to the National Cancer Institute. But that still doesn’t fully explain the long list of conditions it’s advised for.

It turns out that many researchers say cannabis and the human body are a particularly good match.

“People have a hard time believing that cannabis can have all of these fantastic effects that are described,” said addiction medicine specialist Jeffrey Hergenrather, a source interviewed in the film. “But

what we’re doing is we’re just stimulating a natural system that’s already there.” He’s talking about something called the endocannabinoid system in the human body, which is part of the nervous system and controls things like appetite, mood, memory and the way we experience pain. The endocannabinoids in the body have a similar structure to that of marijuana.

“Cannabinoids affect everything,” said Dr. Sean Devlin, physician and co-owner of Mynt Cannabis Dispensary. He advises cannabis use for a wide range of ailments, and he’s helped many patients transition from opioids—for which, he said, “the space between an effective dose and a lethal dose is narrow. “With cannabis, there is no lethal pharmaceutical dose,” he said. “You can cause sleepiness or paranoia, but you can’t kill em.”

“It’s not the end all be all,” said Devlin, however.

He expressed concerns about dosage, especially now that marijuana will likely be in the hands of many new users. Vic and Peggy are among many who’ve encountered surprises with dosage, and while their experiences ranged from simply entertaining to temporarily incapacitating, there have been some more serious cases. In Colorado, within 15 months of legalization, high doses of cannabis were a factor in three deaths—two apparent suicides and a murder.

Real chaRacTeRs: ResTless aRTisTs TheaTRe coMpany Based in Sparks and fairly new to the theater scene is RAT, which emphasizes small productions and smart, character-driven scripts. For summer, that means a staged reading of Motherhood Out Loud, a compendium of vignettes written by female writers who share the ups and downs of life and motherhood. For the seventh year in a row, Brüka will offer its Performing Arts Summer Camp, a two-week intensive for kids ages 8 to 18, in which they adapt and create their own original play based on a provided premise and under the direction of a professional artist. This year’s title is “The Enchanted Quill,” about a quill that makes magic as you write with it. The story is all up to the kids, who create characters, setting and costumes.

In August, Brüka technically goes dark, but the company will partner with the Aces on Aug. 1—raising funds through ticket sales to certain seats at that day’s game—and they’ll hold season auditions. Watch the website and Facebook to catch audition dates when they’re announced.

family, fanTaSy, fun: reno liTTle TheaTer Reno Little Theater keeps growing, and this year, company members are thrilled to be adding a part-time position for their increasingly popular education programs, as well as a full-time assistant technical director.

There’s family fun July 6-30 with RLT’s Artown show, Peter and the Starcatcher, the origin story of Peter Pan. Done in the style of do-it-yourself theater, the show invites the audience to come along on a journey into the

imagination, with a sparse set that places the show in a world of your mind’s own making.

In August, RLT goes dark in preparation for its 83rd season, which opens on Sept. 8 with Equivocation, directed by Merry War Theatre’s artistic director Chase McKenna, about a playwright called Shagspeare who is commissioned by the British government to write about a national crisis from their point of view, resulting in Shagspeare’s struggle to determine what his artistic integrity is worth.

Inner workings Meg Regelous When I pass a fire hydrant on the street, the last things I consider are the plumbing underneath or the bolts holding it together. I just sort of walk by. When I glance down at my old-school watch, my mind is on where the two hands are placed and how late I might be, not the feats of engineering it took to manufacture springs or cogs or whatever makes it tick.

I imagine that a lot of us don’t contemplate the inner workings of everyday items. We just think of the things when we need them, or maybe not at all.

But most of us are not Meg Regelous.

“I think objects are just incredible,” Regelous said. “I’m wowed by the development and the design and the science and the engineering that went into things. I love the idea that you can take something and kind of glorify it and bring attention to it by elevating it to the status of art.”

Growing up in Novato, California, Regelous was a distracted kid who thought her propensity for being influenced by all the things, all at once, made her incurably unfocused. Teachers said she was not bright. Her parents saw bursts of determination from her, but the influence of those teachers left her feeling lost, and she never finished high school.

As a young adult, Regelous moved with her sister to Chicago. Her sister got a membership to the Art Institute of Chicago, and Regelous began borrowing it. She visited and revisited the museum whenever possible. There, she found solace and fell in love with art.

Painter Meg Regelous has found that taking a close, thoughtful look at everyday objects can clear the distracted mind.

“Before I found art, I felt adrift, lacking and unsettled,” Regelous said. “I could get by, but I lacked purpose.”

After discovering art, she also discovered a life as an avid learner. She moved back to California, enrolled at the College of Marin and loaded her schedule with art classes. The classes showed her an artistic way to look at the everyday objects she’d always loved.

One such object, the fire extinguisher, inspired Fighting Flames Unseen, her most recent project, currently on display at Hub Coffee Roasters on Riverside Drive.

One of her favorite paintings in the show is called, “Extinguisher Two.” The technique she used in painting the piece is an homage to an artist she admires, Wayne Thiebaud, and his paintings of cakes and pies. Her painting is not of a baked good, but it looked buttery and delicious to me. Regelous emulated Thiebaud’s style, wanting the piece to be textured and simple. Although the composition of “Extinguisher Two” is straightforward, the painting also has complexity. In the middle of the canvas where the extinguisher sits in its box, there is a shadow. That is where Regelous chose to imply depth. She said that was the “trickiest part of the painting.”

“I love playing with this idea of a utilitarian object, like a fire extinguisher, and making it non-utilitarian,” she said.

Regelous said she’ll ponder an idea for months, letting it incubate before she makes a painting. Once the work is finished, the creative and intellectual parts of her mind have room again, and new ideas have space to grow. For a once-distracted kid, that has been very therapeutic. Ω

“Who you calling Four Eyes?”

Unraveled I don’t hate The Mummy because it’s a terrible movie. I hate it because it could have, and should have, been good.

Actually, hate is a strong word. I just don’t like it. Opportunities abound for some real fun here, and they are all squandered in the end.

Tom Cruise is fully committed for a gonzo performance as Nick Morton, a soldier moonlighting as a tomb raider in Iraq. After stumbling upon the tomb of an ancient Egyptian nasty named Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella), he winds up on a plane with the mummy, some soldiers, and a mysterious woman named Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis).

The plane crashes, and then the weirdness begins, with Nick surviving the crash due to being possessed by Ahmanet. Post-crash Ahmanet starts sucking face with cops and dead guys, turning them into a zombie army as she marches on London. Along the way, Nick meets Dr. Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe) in a subplot so freaking unnecessary it’s maddening.

Jekyll is here because he’s part of Universal’s new “Dark Universe” scheme, an attempt to Marvel-size the classic Universal monsters into some sort of connected, ongoing series. What a seriously stupid mistake this is. Nothing connects these monsters other than their original gothic origins, so trying to make them modern stand-ins for Iron Man and the Hulk is a joke. And, take it from me, Dr. Henry Jekyll is no Nick Fury.

Cruise is stuck laboring in this convoluted, yet sometimes almost entertaining, mess. The film starts with a blast as Nick and his sidekick Chris (Jake Johnson) uncover the tomb, then run into trouble on that plane. The subsequent plane crash is thrilling, scary stuff, and the attempt to turn Jake Johnson into something akin to Griffin Dunne in An American Werewolf in London has potential.

Alas, the movie cheeses out, and becomes more concerned with being the start of something big rather than just being a grand achievement unto itself. Director Alex Kurtzman plays it safe with the scares—scares that have potential but reek of

PG-13 confinement. Had he gone for something more in the spirit of the Evil Dead series, increasing the scares, gore, and raunchy laughs, part of the premise here could’ve been a lot of fun.

What we wind up with is a film that is afraid of itself, and so unfocused you’ll check out in the second half.

Too bad. Ahmanet makes for a compelling monster, and I prefer her mummy to the one running around in those hackneyed Brendan Fraser efforts. Wallis is equally good as the woman with a few secrets, and Johnson is funny when he’s allowed to be.

Cruise is Cruise, and if you are a fan, that’s a good thing. He holds his own for most of the flick, but the script lets him down in the end with a terrible finale. It’s as if Kurtzman and his screenwriters had something nice and bleak—hey, it’s supposed to be a horror film! Things can end badly!—and then they just had to shoot for something happier. The final moments feel tacked on.

Seriously, Universal wants this to be a Universe like Marvel and DC? Maybe the sympathetic vampires of Twilight have them thinking audiences will accept Dracula as a hero? I doubt it. First off, Dracula will always sound and be nasty, and many moviegoers frown upon bloodsuckers, even the Twilight ones.

Johnny Depp is supposed to play the Invisible Man, and Javier Bardem is signed on for Frankenstein’s Monster? What, are they going to join hands and solve crimes together? Pull the plug on this plan, now, and just make good standalone monster movies. Kurtzman has made a messy film, but he’s not totally to blame. This is a movie in service of a franchise idea, and it feels like it’s being force injected down our throats.

Abandon the Dark Universe, and, please, no more of Russell Crowe’s Jekyll and Hyde act. It’s nonsense. Ω

Alien: Covenant

It Comes at Night

Ridley Scott’s third Alien film is an entertaining mashup of the overreaching but cool sensibilities from Prometheus and the old-school ick factor and dread that marked the original. Alien: Covenant continues the ruminations about the origins of mankind birthed in Prometheus while injecting a few more Xenomorphs into the mix. It will please those fans of the first two films of the franchise who want the shit scared out of them, while also appeasing those who enjoyed the brainy ways of Prometheus. While Scott has leaned harder on the horror elements for this one, his budget is more than $30 million less than the one he had for Prometheus. That film constituted one of cinema’s all-time great uses of 3-D technology. Covenant totally abandons 3-D and features some CGI in the opening minutes that look befitting of a low budget Syfy channel offering. The film more than makes up for it once the crew members of the Covenant, a stricken colony ship in danger of not reaching its destination, set down to scout out a new planet as a closer alternate. They encounter Prometheus survivor David (Michael Fassbender), who has basically been up to no good. Fassbender also plays a new android named Walter, and he more than capitalizes on the chance to do something weird with this acting opportunity.

There’s plenty of old school scares and gore to go with the musings about Earth’s creation.

Writer-director Trey Edward Shults, who made a splendid debut with last year’s family drama Krisha, goes for a family drama of the post-apocalyptic kind with this thriller falsely billed as a horror movie. Paul (Joel Edgerton), a man living in a remote house with his wife and kid (Carmen Ejogo and Kelvin Harrison, Jr.) will go to every extreme to protect his family from a plague that has claimed the majority of Earth’s population. If somebody gets sick in his home, it’s a bullet to the head and a post-mortem visit to the fire pit. With that possibility always at hand, he allows a new couple (Christopher Abbott and Riley Keough, grandchild of Elvis) and their child to move in after they earn his trust with some livestock. Things go well for a short amount of time, before paranoia kicks in and the fire pit looms. Edgerton is magnificent here, as is the rest of the cast. The marketing makes this look like some sort of zombie movie, but it’s more drama than horror, although it is very much on the dark side. Shults is a true talent who doesn’t play by the rules. He’s off to one of the better director starts of recent memory, and he’s only going to get better. If you are looking for zombie fun, watch The Walking Dead. This one is about families behaving badly. It aims to mess with your head, and succeeds.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

The trippy Marvel fun continues with this big, nutty, spiraling sequel that brings the fun, along with a lot of daddy issues.

Star-Lord, a.k.a. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), had some major mommy issues in the first movie, and this time out his dad takes a turn at messing with his head. The dad comes in the form of Ego (Kurt Russell—yes!), who we see hanging out with Quill’s mom in the ’70s during the film’s prologue. (The CGI and practical makeup anti-aging effects on Kurt Russell ranks as one of the best examples of that particular trick.)

After a killer opening credits sequence, the Guardians—including Quill, Baby Groot (voice of Vin Diesel), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (David Bautista) and Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper)—find themselves on another quest.

They are quickly diverted to Ego’s planet, where Quill finds out more about his celestial origins. Russell proves to be perfectly cast as Quill’s bombastic father, with Pratt possessing many of the legendary action film star’s alluring traits. Seeing them on screen together, at one point playing catch with an energy ball Quill conjures with newfound powers, is one of the film’s great joys. But ecause writer-director James Gunn isn’t going to settle for an easy story about a wayward son reuniting with a dream dad.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

In the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, a bunch of pirates run around and act like dicks while being pursued by ghosts. If my memory serves me right, that is basically the plot of all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

The new one, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales rehashes the same plot, with Johnny “The Whore” Depp doing his whole drunken Keith Richards pirate routine again as Jack Sparrow. Actually, his Keith Richards routine has devolved into something more akin to Dudley Moore in Arthur 2: On the Rocks. I reference the Arthur sequel, for the original was somewhat funny, but the gag got real tired in part two. So it goes with Depp’s meandering, mumbling, tipsy performance as Jack Sparrow, the feared pirate that everybody in the world seems to have some sort of beef with. He’s laboring with a joke that stopped being funny four movies ago. This time out, a new legion of undead sailors is after Jack due to his having a compass that can lead them back to the land of the living, or some bullshit like that. The band of dead sailors is led by Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), some dude who was trying to rid the world of pirates in his living days, but wound up a cursed ghost under the sea. While Salazar’s villain has his good, creepy moments, he can’t save this dreck.

Wonder Woman

Martin McCann plays a character simply listed as Survivalist in the credits, a man living on a small piece of land in a post-apocalyptic world where food has grown scarce. It’s a lonely existence, but he has a crop to get by, and it’s all for him. That is, until a mysterious woman (Olwen Fouere) and her daughter (Mia Goth) show up looking to barter for food.

After he refuses their offer of pumpkin seeds, Survivalist accepts the offer of sleeping with the daughter, and then things get a little complicated. Writer-director Stephen Fingleton has made a film that is relentlessly dark, and his film has next to nothing good to say about human beings. (Hey, the human race needs a good smackdown sometimes, am I right?) McCann is highly memorable as a nervous man who yearns for companionship but trusts no one.

Fouere is the right touch of nasty as somebody who has been hardened by the apocalypse.

Goth plays the film’s most sympathetic character, yet even she is a schemer with nefarious intentions. This is a film that aims to bum you out, and succeeds. I say this as a compliment (Available for download on iTunes and Amazon. com during limited theatrical release.)

The DC Universe gets the blast of fun it sorely needed with a film that gets it right on almost every front, and features a performance from Gal Gadot that makes it seem the role was her birthright. Gadot lights up the screen and commands the camera on a level with Christopher Reeve and Robert Downey, Jr., in past films of the superhero genre. She simply is Wonder Woman to the extent that I can’t picture another actress ever even attempting to play the character again. She owns it. It’s hers. Game over. There’s always that faction of fans who bitch about superhero origin stories, wanting these films to jump straight to the hardcore action, but I love a good superhero origin story done well, and this is one of them. The movie starts with young Amazonian princess Diana running around in her island paradise, practicing her fight moves and yearning to be trained as a warrior. After butting heads with her sister Antiope, Diana’s mother, Hippolyta, relents, and allows Antiope to train Diana, as long as she doesn’t tell her about the true powers she possesses. For those who don’t know the Wonder Woman back story—I was a little rusty on it myself—it’s a sweet little piece of mythology and mystery, and director Patty Jenkins (the Charlize Theron Oscar vehicle Monster) perfectly paces all the revelations. It says a lot that Gadot and Jenkins make you feel good in a movie that has its share of violence and villainy in it.

A three-scoop poke bowl with crab, seaweed salad, tuna and much more.

Dice the roll As with sushi and ceviche, in recent years, Hawaiian poke salad has become popular with American foodies. Pronounced “pohk-eh,” it means “to slice or cut.” The dish originated as a quick fisherman’s snack of trimmings from the day’s catch and became a favorite treat on island menus in the ’70s. Versions of the dish started showing up on the mainland just a few years ago, with Reno restaurants adding a dish or two. However, the true mix and match custom poke bowl just made the local scene this spring with the opening of Poke King.

The strip mall location is small, but the sparse indoor seating is supplemented with a fair number of patio tables. The format is pretty straightforward and the service is efficient and friendly. First, you choose either three or five scoops of protein ($10.95 and $13.95, respectively). Tofu bowls are $8.95.

Proteins include octopus, salmon, scallop, shrimp, tuna, yellowtail and tofu. These are placed on a bed of white or brown rice, mixed greens, wonton chips or a mix of the diner’s choosing.

Sauce it up with sesame shoyu, spicy mayo, truffle ponzu or creamy miso.

Finally, top it with any combination of sweet onion, scallion, masago, tobiko, jalapeno, cucumber, edamame, seaweed salad, crab salad, wasabi, pickled ginger, sesame seed, fried garlic, fried shallot or furikake.

Diced avocado is $1 extra.

My friend and I went with three-scoop bowls, and at first glance they seemed a bit small. Looks can definitely be deceiving, because neither of us left hungry. I’d say the bowls were roughly equivalent to ordering a pair of sushi long rolls. Perhaps my only complaint would be that the food just barely fit in the bowl. I’d like to have more room to mix everything up a bit.

Wanting some leafy goodness, I asked for mixed greens, salmon, tuna and shrimp, tossed in spicy mayo and topped with maguro—tiny fish roe—onion, ginger, shallot, seaweed salad, sesame seeds and furikake—a Japanese seasoning blend of dried and ground fish, sesame seeds, chopped seaweed, sugar, salt and sometimes MSG. The texture and freshness of the seafood were very good, with cooked shrimp diced the same as the fish. The mix of greens was very nice, and the seaweed added some tartness and crunch. The spicy mayo made for a perfect salad dressing.

My friend’s bowl of octopus, scallop and yellowtail—tossed in creamy miso on white rice—was topped with wonton chips, crab salad, scallion, sweet onion, cucumber, fried garlic and avocado.

Again, the fish was perfect, with the octopus a delicious standout. The sauce was nice and savory, rounding out the satisfying, filling bowl of enjoyable flavor and texture. The avocado was ripe, and the crab salad was finely shredded, akin to that used to top sushi rolls. It didn’t have a ton of flavor on its own but was a nice complement to the bowl. The rice came straight from the cooker, so it was still a bit warm—a comforting touch against the refrigerated ingredients.

I really appreciate a menu that is simple and straightforward yet allows for any number of combinations to be assembled.

I’d like to taste the other sauces and mix up the seafood combinations, and with such great service and quality ingredients, I doubt it’ll be long before I work my way through a few more bowls of poke. Ω

Blue and red I’ve never really thought of myself as cool. At best, I thought I straddled the line between uncool and cool, equally comfortable with the nerds and the popular kids.

High school is a weird time. By the time I was in college, I’d like to think none of that mattered. Despite the social circles pretty much fading into meaninglessness, there are still places you go and people you hang out with that might be seen as cool or uncool, even when that social hierarchy disappears—you still are judged on the people you surround yourself with and the parties and other social events you attend.

Now I’m just happy if my kids think I’m a cool dad.

Rewinding to my social heyday and not wanting to subject you to further rhapsodizing on beer week, I decided to revisit a place that might have been one of the coolest local spots a couple of decades ago. Some of you local GenXers might remember a bar called the Blue Lamp downtown, a hip spot to catch the Atomiks, hang out with artists and Burners before many people knew what that meant, and get some drink in you. Just as many of us have moved on in life, starting families, careers, growing up, so the Blue Lamp became the RedRock Bar. On a random Monday after work, I wondered what the RedRock was like now, roughly 20 years since I drank there.

Surrounded by banks, office buildings, and courthouses, is it an after-work stop for yuppies? Now that I’ve been there, I still don’t know what to think. Apparently a Blue Lamp employee bought the place, and it retains some of the same feel—neon art, the speakeasy basement with a pool table like back in the day.

hangs out front. Carlsberg? I don’t remember anyone drinking or mentioning Carlsberg anytime in recent memory. Or maybe ever. And it’s not just a sign, they have it on draft. Or they would have if almost all the draft beer wasn’t gone. A mere five taps, including nitro Guinness, and three of them were empty. Inquiring about other beer options, the selection of bottles sounded average—an assortment of readily available brands, at least most of them decent craft options rather than beer factory lager. Eyeballing the back bar, the spirits selection appeared mostly average as well, and when I asked the bartender what cocktails he was good for, shots was the answer. Not quite ready to take that plunge, I opted for something simple—well vodka with tonic. Nothing fancy, but it was a little disappointing thanks to flat tonic. I was curious but didn’t ask about the espresso machine.

So it’s not really a beer bar or a cocktail bar, and with only two other customers, obviously regulars, I couldn’t decide what kind of crowd it draws. I thought the Carlsberg might be a hipster retro thing like PBR, but I really didn’t get that vibe—most of the cool here felt like Blue Lamp leftovers and my own nostalgia. What is this place? The accessible alternative music playing from a laptop gave no clues. It’s not really a dive or a trendy spot. I don’t think the college crowd comes here. Lawyers? Or maybe this is still an artist’s bar? Maybe there’s a late night shuffleboard scene.

Aside from a few missteps like empty taps and flat tonic, the RedRock seems OK. It’s clean, artfully decorated, and not too loud or smoky. And I don’t care how cool a crowd it draws. Ω

Carter Stellon and Michelle Belle are the scaled back version of the The Grimtones, formerly a sixmember band.

Two-piece wonder The Grimtones Michelle Belle and Carter Stellon met at an open mic event nine years ago, and their two-piece band the Grimtones is as strong as ever.

They have not always been a twopiece band. When they started, they were a six-piece band, but they spilt up to pursue different things. With only two members left, Carter swapped guitar for drums.

“We both play multiple instruments, and we wanted to do an album,” Belle said. “So we were just like, well, if we cannot have other people, let’s just play all the instruments in the album.”

They each play more than five instruments on the album, so their live sound is a lot different than their studio sound.

Going from a six-piece group to a two-piece has been one of their biggest struggles. They have to constantly change their recipe to fill in the spots that former players used to occupy.

“In all reality, there are a couple of songs on our album—we just cannot play it,” Stellon said.

“Sometimes I have to play the bass line with my thumb and solos with my fingers so I can keep the bass line going,” Belle added.

Taking influence from Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, they follow the motto, “players have to be able to play.”

“We always wing it on stage—it is much more satisfying to play when it is not completely rehearsed,” they said, almost in unison, collaborating on sentences. “We play the instrument and not the song.”

After working together as songwriting partners for nine years, they automatically follow and understand each other, and the best part of having fewer members is that it’s much easier to jam.

Stellon said their songwriting process is different every time.

“There have been times when we have studio time and we need to come up with a song in three days, and then we have had songs for years and years, and they are still not done,” he said.

The Grimtones have always written the music first, before the lyrics. Their steps of production usually go in this order: melody, music and then the lyrics. Belle is the mastermind behind most lyrics.

“It is half and half,” she said. “If I write a song and there’s a part missing, Carter usually knows exactly what parts to put in.”

The duo is often described as a soft rock ’n’ roll band, but their sound is different in every song. Stellon pointed to The Beatles and their varied sound to explain the band’s interest in trying new things.

The two consider their 2014 album, Sing the Body Electric, to be their biggest achievement to date. They said that their sound has matured a lot from when they started in 2008, when they worked together as studio musicians in Dogwater Studios.

“It should have taken two weeks to record our album when it took us a year because we messed around and experimented,” Belle said. “We kept microphones under garage doors to record rain and [clamped] tambourines to bass drums to get certain sounds.”

The Grimtones released a single, “Words,” in December, 2016. They’re now planning to release an EP and, eventually, a full-length album. Ω

The Grimtones play at 9:30 p.m. June 17 at Davidson’s Distillery, 275 E. Fourth St.

Churchill Arts Council presents a free concert featuring this multi-generational collective of Haitian musicians. The group was formed in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, by guitarist Steeve Valcourt, singer Joans Attis and American producer Zach Niles as a way to bring healing to a country that had been devastated by an earthquake and subsequent cholera outbreak in 2010. Valcourt, Attis and Niles assembled a team of singers, rara horn players, drummers, guitarists and an accordionist who range in age from

early 20s to late 60s and come from across Haiti’s musical, social, religious and geographic spectrum. The group’s first album, Wa Di Yo, reflects the African, French, Caribbean and U.S. influences that come together in Haiti. Their live show “blends the spirit of a church revival, the social engagement of a political rally and the almost trance inducing intoxication of a Vodou ritual.” The band will perform on Saturday, June 17, starting at 7:30 p.m. outside of the Oats Park Art Center, 151 E. Speaking ill of the dud I have a close friend whose relationships always end badly.

The new guy she’s dating has a reputation as a user. My friend’s very successful, and I believe he’s dating her for her business contacts. I need to be honest with her about this. How should I do that—considering she falls in love hard and fast?

People will insist that they absolutely want you to be honest with them when they’re doing anything stupid—and then immediately reward you for it by exiling you from Western society.

Yes, even well-intentioned honesty is often counterproductive.

This might be hard for you to swallow, considering how warning your friend about this guy probably seems like warning her that she’s about to be hit by a bus.

Though it’s hard to deny the existence of a 24-ton object hurtling toward us, seeing things accurately is not always the first order of the human perceptual system. In fact, evolutionary psychologist Martie Haselton explains that we seem to have evolved to make the least costly perceptual error in a situation—a subconscious calculation that sometimes leads to our over-perceiving or under-perceiving risks or opportunities. For example, we are predisposed to over-perceive that stick in the rustling leaves as a snake because it’s far more costly to die from a snake bite than to “die” of embarrassment when our peeps mock us for jumping out of our skin at a sinister-looking twig.

In relationships, social psychologist Garth Fletcher and his colleagues find that it’s sometimes in our interest to err on the side of “positivity”—the rosy view—over “accuracy.” Whether positivity or accuracy is active is contextdependent—meaning determined by our situation. So, for example, when you’re in no rush to settle down, positivity vision prevails. Positive illusions are “associated with greater relationship satisfaction and lower rates of dissolution.” Other times, “the need to make accurate, unbiased judgments becomes critical,” like when a little voice inside you is yelling “It’s baby o’clock!” and you’ll need a guy who’ll stick around and “dad.”

Unfortunately, your even hinting that this guy may have ulterior

motives is likely to make your friend snarlingly defensive—which is to say she may end up throwing somebody out of her life and it probably won’t be him. Of course, it’s possible that you’re wrong about the guy. Regardless, per the Fletcher team’s finding, your friend’s being able to see anything beyond how dreamypants he is may be driven by context—like when maintaining the rosy view would prove fatal to her achieving some essential goal. At that point, she might start noticing that their threesomes invariably involve the head of HR—and that if she asked him “Baby, what’s your favorite position?” his answer would be “vice president!”

Mute emergency I’m a single guy, and I just never know how to start conversations with girls. I have a sense of humor, but I’m bad at coming up with funny lines on the fly. I’ve thought of using a “line,” but if I were a girl, hearing one would just make me annoyed. Do you have any advice on good conversation starters?

Granted, it’s better if you can be funny when hitting on girls.

Evolutionary psychologist Geoffrey Miller believes “humor production ability” is a “hard-to-fake” sign of intelligence in a potential partner.

Research by Miller and others suggests he’s right—finding correlations between humor and “verbal creativity” and intelligence. But note “hard-to-fake.” Trying to be funny when you aren’t all that funny is about as successful a tactic as trying to remove someone’s appendix when you aren’t really a doctor.

However, even if you aren’t naturally funny, what you can be is genuine. To do this, just say something. Ask about that book she’s carrying or whether she’s survived the vegan Reuben. Just saying something is basically like opening a tiny door to see whether anything’s behind it. If a woman finds you attractive, she’ll pick up and respond. Ω

Where did the name Filthy Animal Apparel come from?

I actually came up with the name, bought the domain name, grabbed the Instagram handle so no one could take it, before I even started drawing and printing shirts. I just feel like with my personality, I would make sense to have something kind of feminine, kind of tomboy, kind of trashy, but also kind of normal. When I came up with Filthy Animal, people already love those two words together. They already do. It encompassed the kind of trashy, kind of awesome, kind of normal thing all in one, while being super familiar. … The actual birthday, the day that I launched it was June 30-slash-July 1, which is why I’m saying one-year on July 1.

There’s not a lot of opportunity for that kind of work here ...

Awesome. What are you doing to commemorate?

I’m going to be at Discover Dickerson. I’ll be in the Strange Bikinis warehouse. She invited me. I’ve got two new tees. And we did a giant photo shoot yesterday.

It was seriously a 10-hour photo shoot, multiple locations. We did an actual birthday shoot to commemorate the first birthday. It is a little girl’s birthday party, and it’s ridiculous. I’m excited. … In the long run, I want people to recognize my company, by the way that I style my photo shoots.

Explain that a little bit.

Well, one of the main reasons I started it—next to just wanting to make T-shirts and things—is that living in Reno, it’s difficult to get modeling work, difficult to get any kind of performance work.

So I needed to create something so I could actually do my thing. I’m good at styling photo shoots. I’m a good photographer. I have all these photographer friends.

I’m a good model, and I know that I am, and I want to be able to do it, and I felt like I wasn’t getting the chance to do it. So I created it. I did it. ... I want my photo shoots to be fun. I always want to be that borderline of almost inappropriate, but not quite.

Too true to be good It would be high comedy if it wasn’t so completely infuriating. When Eddie Munster Ryan defended Trump’s nonstop ineptitude by saying, “Hey, give the guy a break, he’s new to all this, you know, he’s learning,” the appropriate response was way beyond the instant, incredulous, “Say what?” that undoubtedly exploded from the mouths of millions. We have to also pause and consider how Republicans would have responded if some Dem had offered a similar lameass defense in early 2009, when new President Obama was having to deal with the gigantic economic grease fire left for him by Dubya and Darth.

A pleasure to see that two attorneys generals, from D.C. and Maryland, just slapped Dum Dum with another emoluments lawsuit.

We can’t have enough of these actions jammed up Twitler’s tailpipe.

The more of these suits he has to

wrangle with, the less time he has to pretend being President. Considering his still dead travel ban and his detestable POS health care bill, this is very good for America.

Right now, the best thing for us reasonable people is for Washington to be completely paralyzed and totally dysfunctional. I sleep much better at night knowing both zero and zilch got done in Washington to MAGA. Trump has openly, brazenly and blatantly flipped the bird at the concept of emoluments from the first minute he took office. It’s only right that the founding fathers finally get their day in court to slap some sense into this oafish lout.

And then, demand the goddamned tax returns.

It’s time to acknowledge the power and performance of our precious fourth estate—the press. (The first three “estates” are the clergy, the nobility and

the commoners.) Without the remarkable digging, probing and snooping of dozens of diligent and relentless reporters—led by the brilliant twin beacons of the New York Times and Washington Post, but also including AP, Reuters, the Guardian and the major television networks—we would be completely at the mercy of this hideous lummox and his detestable GOP henchmen, whose members vie amongst themselves to see who’s the next lucky lackey who gets to plant the next hickey on Trump’s fat, mottled ass. (“Ooh, me, me, Paul, pick me, pick me!”)

Journalists are single-handedly saving the country and the planet from this dangerous chowderhead and his deplorable zombies, with absolutely no help at all from the invertebrate Republican enablers in Congress. It’s a heroic battle we’re watching play out bit by bit, day by day, story by story. Ω
