Real-life magic Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I’m back from my little musical sojourn around the Northwest. Tour was great. I feel really fortunate that I get to experience that life—traveling with some of my best buds, visiting cool places, meeting people, and hearing great music. It’s a privilege to enjoy, and I’m thankful I get to do it— even if only for a week or two at a time a couple of times a year, plus the occasional weekend strike.

For a long time, I thought that music was important because it mattered, but in recent years, I’ve come to the conclusion that music is important because it doesn’t matter. Music is an activity that we choose to do—however we choose to do it. It’s not something that we need to do to stay alive, or further the species. It has no real utility.

But it’s so precious because it can be real-life magic—things that seem impossible happen every day.

I recognize that a life devoted to the arts is a gift, and I do my best to savor that and to make it accessible to as many people as possible.

That’s one of the many reasons I’m proud of the work we do here at the RN&R. Anyway. The first gig of the tour was in Salt Lake City, so we started off with a long drive across Nevada. And here’s the thing: it’s a lot greener and wetter than you might remember. Of course, it was late April, which is about as wet and green as it ever gets around here, but I was amazed at how much greenery I saw, nominal deserts that looked like marshes, and a Humboldt River that looked like it could be surfed. It’s not just here on the western border that things look wet and green. Central and eastern Nevada are altered landscapes as well. It’s hard not to think that climate change is the culprit.

But nothing I saw looks quite as threatening as the Truckee has lately. That river is a loaded weapon.

RSCVA and public property

The sex trade

About 200 people—not 100 as Channel 8 reported—and I stood in a long line the morning of April 17 outside the Reno Convention Center before word finally came that they were letting no one else in because Sen. Heller hadn’t booked a large enough room for the town hall.

An impromptu town hall then took place outside the Center front door right in front of a temporary Reno Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority sign warning people that signs and free speech activities were not allowed on this Washoe County property.

Dozens of speakers took their turn standing on a rock—a traffic barrier—to express their opinions. An RSCVA representative came out and handed out leaflets explaining that free speech was banned by the RSCVA on its leased property. However, there are no permanent signs on the building conveying this message, and they refused to enforce their own rules.

There were at least a half dozen Reno police officers present. When I asked the police why they were not going to enforce the RSCVA regulation, they said they would do nothing until RSCVA filed a trespass complaint. Obviously the RSCVA rule is arbitrary/or only enforced against people with whom the RSCVA or their customers disagree. I was arrested five months ago at the Convention Center for trespassing after holding up an anti-Tump sign, but the RSCVA refused to come to the bench trial to testify.

The RSCVA is funded in part by room taxes, and its meetings are subject to open meeting laws. They may be a quasi-private organization, but they have no right to arbitrarily restrict signs, flags, T-shirts, lapel pins or anything else that demonstrates free speech on public property. Could we have a short investigative piece on this action?

Re “Getting some” (letters, April 13): Chris Rosamond writes, “most men don’t have to pay” [for sex]. Most people don’t need wheelchairs—perhaps Chris Rosamond feels superior to those that do. There are many reasons why one would want to engage nurturance for hire—being abused by one’s parents so one cannot engage others socially, being through the emotional wringer of multiple divorces, having a job like truck driving where one doesn’t have time for a relationship, being physically crippled and feeling undesirable, being a bisexual woman in a relationship with a man and needing one’s other desires fulfilled without any emotional strings attached.

The vast majority of sex workers’ customers do, in fact, consider women to be human beings, which is why they are willing to pay.

People who take and don’t pay are rapists.

The whole trope of “bought like a piece of meat” is a lie from the prohibitionists.

When one engages a plumber by-the-hour or by-the-job, nobody says anything about buying bodies. Why the hysteria about sex work? Because it serves the moral entrepreneurs behind the fake news and panic. N.b., before 1910, prostitution was legal in every state in America. How’d the alcohol prohibition thing from 1920 work out? How’s the drug prohibition thing working? So sex work prohibition will work, you think?

Tinkering is not enough The Nevada Legislature may vote to remove the sales tax from feminine hygiene products. This has been getting considerable shallow and poorly informed news coverage.

As a result, the measure is coasting to passage with little scrutiny. There’s nothing wrong with the measure. The big problem is that it’s too small and limited. But first, let’s start with some of the misconceptions about the bill.

News outlets like the Sagebrush at the University of Nevada, Reno and KVVU in Las Vegas have repeated the claim, “Products considered necessities are exempt from sales tax in the state.” In fact, there is no such state policy.

Quite the contrary—when the sales tax was first created one of its attractions to legislators was that it would tax broad product lines like groceries and very expensive lines like pharmaceuticals and cars.

Further, journalists are using shorthand terms “pink tax” and “tax on tampons.” That misrepresents the situation and is pretty poor journalism in this period when the public is having to sort out alternative news, fake news and news. There is no tax on tampons—there is a sales tax that applies to a whole array of durable goods that happen to include tampons and other items—including, by the way, condoms.

That leads us to claims of sexism. The Las Vegas Review Journal and other entities have reported things like this: “Jazz Sheffer and several other young women who testified from Las Vegas said the tax was ‘sexist’.”

That’s not the case. In the 62-year history of the Nevada sales tax, there is not a single sheet of paper in the archival record suggesting that any member of the legislature

sought to single out women by applying the tax to feminine hygiene products. The tax may be unfair, but that is very different from suggesting sexist intent.

Over the years, some Nevadans became impatient with taxing necessities and either went to the legislature or to ballot petitions and got the sales tax lifted from some necessities. Those were small rebellions against the state policy of taxing necessities, but the policy itself is unchanged. Some variants of the word necessary appear six times in the sales tax statutes. In none of the six is it used to propound a policy of opposition to taxing necessities. And those statutes still tax innumerable necessities in addition to feminine hygiene products and male birth control.

In 1970, Nevadans voted to remove the sale tax on pharmaceutical drugs. In 1979, it was food, in 1986 prosthetic and other medical devices, and this past November voters removed the sales tax on still more medical devices.

And they’ve barely scratched the surface. Necessities from clothing to soap are still taxed.

When are state legislators going to learn that these piecemeal measures don’t solve the problem, that the sales tax can’t be reformed? The problem is the sales tax itself, not its various applications. It’s unfair, unpredictable, unreliable. In hard times, when a stable state tax is most needed, it collapses. A state government relying on it is sanity-challenged, and Nevada should know this better than most, given the repeated state budget crises it has caused the state over the decades.

Tinkering with the sales tax is not the answer.

Drugging the system with money When do well-meaning non-profits transform from community advocates to mercenary foot soldiers? When do corporate contributions to a non-profit organization cross the line from philanthropy to avarice?

These questions are playing out in real-time through a bill in the Nevada Legislature that would track and regulate prices on diabetes medicine—Senate Bill 265, from Clark County Senator Yvanna Cancela.

It’s not as if Nevadans aren’t used to this kind of behavior from the corporate sector, eager to change their foes into friends. The mining industry has long provided generous gifts to schools, the arts and universities to show what good citizens they are and to inoculate themselves from paying more in taxes for the privilege of taking our gold.

Many of Nevada’s premier environmental groups have accepted financing from the very industry they are supposed to be watchdogging, leading to distasteful perceptions that a non-profit is for sale.

Now we have a bill that is being touted as model legislation, taking the

pharmaceutical industry to task for raising prices on diabetes medication almost 400 percent from 2006 to 2013. S.B. 265 offers direct financial relief to patients coping with soaring prices for the drugs their lives literally depend upon, including refunds when prices spike. Patients are increasingly battling their own insurance providers when they balk at paying exorbitant prices for specific types of insulin. While insurers and drug makers blame each other for the problem, patients are left to engage in desperate and dangerous searches for these drugs in the black market or take smaller doses than recommended, risking the consequences.

S.B. 265 requires drug manufacturers to account for the actual costs associated with creating the drugs, including marketing expenses. The legislation requires that drug sales representatives become licensed in Nevada and asks non-profit patient advocacy groups to disclose contributions from manufacturers of prescription drugs, making it easier to evaluate who might really be pushing an agenda.

According to an article in Tonic, a New England Journal of Medicine study found 83 percent of 104 patient advocacy organizations that were reviewed received some of their funding from pharmaceutical companies, creating at least a perception of a conflict of interest. Since many of these public health organizations have submitted testimony against Cancela’s bill that is remarkably similar to the industry’s talking points, it is reasonable to assume that their fiscal interests are guiding their testimony against a bill that would save their constituents’ money and, in some cases, their very lives.

It’s worth noting that pharmaceuticals are one of the most profitable industries in America with incredible political clout.

They are no strangers to the technique of astro-turfing either, a tactic designed to showcase pseudo support by hiding behind well-known and respected organizations.

Don’t forget the debacle they created in 2003 when they commandeered the AARP into lobbying for a specific clause

forbidding the Federal government from negotiating prices when Medicare Part D was implemented.

Drug companies also have cozy relationships with many doctors, cultivating them through financial incentives such as the “gift” of becoming a paid lecturer at a seminar in a popular vacation destination.

They know what they’re doing, and they have the money to keep doing it thanks to the ridiculously high prices Americans pay for drugs.

The bill is still alive in the Nevada Legislature thanks to a waiver granted by the Democratic leadership. However, the pharmaceutical industry has upped its lobbyist corps dramatically with nearly 70 registered lobbyists now doing its bidding, including a number of former legislators.

If you’re tired of paying more for prescription drugs than any other country in the world, let your legislator know you support S.B. 265. We can’t fix everything about health care, but S.B. 265 is an excellent place to start. Ω

The presidential monopoly On April 21, former presidential nominees Gary Johnson of the Libertarian Party and Jill Stein of the Green Party had a hearing before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, appealing a dismissal at the district court level. They are suing the Commission of Presidential Debates (CPD), the Republican and Democratic Parties, and Barack Obama and Mitt Romney over their exclusion from the televised presidential debates in the 2012 election.

Minor candidates have usually been excluded from televised presidential debates. Reform Party nominee Ross Perot was included, twice. Independent candidate John Anderson was included in 1980.

Otherwise, they have been excluded. The CPD claims in its mission statement that it is non-partisan, but the plaintiffs contend it is actually bipartisan.

Minor candidates must poll 15 percent or more in presidential polls to be in the televised debates. This has proven to be a difficult barrier. Participation in the debates is necessary for name recognition,

so they are in a Catch-22. They can’t get to 15 percent without being known. They can’t get known because they’re not in the debates.

The CPD is a private organization. The district court dismissed the case over lack of standing to sue a private organization.

Johnson and Stein and their attorneys have devised a new legal theory to get around this jurisdictional problem. They contend that a presidential campaign is as much a business as a political activity.

They are suing the defendants under the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, contending that they have formed a monopoly that is depriving the plaintiffs of not only a political but a business opportunity in restraint of trade. They are trust-busting the Democrats and Republicans!

One of their attorneys, Bruce Fein, said, “When you run for President you have commercial goals. … [T]he concerted actions of Mr. Obama, Mr. Romney and the CPD were intended to cripple or destroy competition in the multi-billion dollar

business of campaigning for the presidency.

The output or product produced by competitors in the business of campaigning for the presidency is information about themselves or other presidential candidates. ... The allegedly illegal concerted actions of Romney, Obama and the CPD constituted an output limitation agreement, i.e., an agreement to limit the output of presidential candidate information. … This was to be accomplished by limiting public information about credible presidential candidates through an exclusionary 15 percent national polling criterion for participation in presidential debates.”

Johnson and Stein and the other participants could stand to gain triple damages under the Sherman Act, if they prevail. Right now, they are just asking the D.C. Circuit to overturn the dismissal and remand the case back to district court.

They are asking that the sole criteria for minor party candidates entering the presidential debates be that they are on the ballot in enough states that they could

theoretically win the electoral college vote and be elected president.

It’s actually easier for an independent candidate to get on the ballot in a presidential race than an organized political party.

Each state runs its own elections, and the requirements for ballot access vary from state to state. The minor parties regularly spend about half of their campaign funds just to get on the ballot, mostly by funding mass petition drives. The Libertarian Party is generally on close to or all 50 state ballots. The Greens usually appear on about 40 ballots. Both parties regularly appear on enough ballots they could theoretically win a presidential election.

The 2016 election with two flawed major party candidates caused increased media attention to the minor parties. They hope the D.C. Circuit will rule they have a fighting chance to improve their odds in 2020. Ω

InsulIn measure watched A measure in the Nevada Legislature is getting attention outside the state for its approach to prescription drug prices.

Senate Bill 265, sponsored by Clark County Sen. Yvanna Cancela, would require diabetes drug makers to keep prices within the rate of inflation or give refunds, require the drug makers to disclose information to the state on how much they pay for research and manufacturing as well as information on profits and discounts provided to insurers and pharmacy benefit managers, require licensure of pharmaceutical drug salespeople, require drug salespeople to disclose the freebies given to physicians, and require nonprofit groups to disclose the contributions drug makers give to those groups.

The measure is relatively nervy in this state. Because of its small size, Nevada often has difficulty enforcing its policies on big corporations. In the insurance field, for instance, legislators have usually been careful imposing mandates for particular types of coverage because some insurers have been known to leave the state’s market altogether rather than comply.

In the case of getting disclosure of confidential information, Nevada legislators investigating allegations of a price conspiracy by ARCO Petroleum in 1987 subpoenaed information that ARCO claimed constituted “trade secrets.” The corporation refused to comply. The lawmakers were stymied until the documents that had been subpoenaed turned up in a public court filing in California, making them available to Nevada’s lawmakers without ARCO’s consent.

Business and consumer lobbyists and trade publications are all watching the progress of the Nevada measure.

mInImum bIll In the U.S. Senate on April 26, Sen. Bernie Sanders’ measure providing for a $15-an-hour minimum wage was re-introduced. Twenty-two Democrats co-sponsored the measure this year, compared to five in the last Congress. Nevada’s Catherine Cortez Masto was not among the co-sponsors.

A statement on Cortez Masto’s 2016 campaign website read, “While Nevada slowly recovers from the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, many people who have been able to find work are still unable to live off the wages they earn. It is long past time for Congress to raise the minimum wage so working Americans can feed their families off the pay they earn.” However, it was not specific about amounts.

marrIage ban An effort to repeal a ban on marriage equality in the Nevada Constitution appears likely to be approved by state lawmakers. Repeal has been approved 27 to 14 in the Assembly and 19 to 2 in the Senate.

Such a measure must pass the legislature twice, then be voted on by the public. The Nevada Legislature approved repeal in 2013 when there was a Democratic majority. In 2015, a Republican majority was elected, and it failed to act on the second passage of the measure. So it had to start over again this year. The measure is Assembly Joint Resolution 2.

The ban went into the Nevada Constitution by initiative petition, which required two public votes. In the first round of voting in 2000, the measure passed by 69.62 percent. In second round voting in 2002, it passed by 67.2 percent.

According to opinion surveys, support for the ban has continued dropping ever since. In 2013, a Public Opinion Strategies poll commissioned by the Retail Association of Nevada indicated majority of Nevadans voters would support repealing of the ban, 54 to 43 percent. The ban has been voided by the courts but remains in the Constitution.

Nevada’s Gold Butte has been a national monument for fewer than 130 days, and Donald Trump is considering overturning its status.

Monumental study Fate of two Nevada sites at issue go to the national Park service’s list of national monuments at www.nps.gov/ archeology/sites/antiquities/monumentslist.htm and search for Nevada’s Basin and Range National Monument. It’s there, but if you click on it, it takes you to a page that reads “Page Not Found.”

That is slightly more successful than looking for Nevada’s Gold Butte National Monument. It is not listed at all.

Those signs of indifference from the NPS play right into the hands of Donald Trump, who argues that national monuments are illegitimate.

On the other hand, going to the White House website after Trump issued an executive order on national monuments and searching for that order produced only one item—“Get Out and Enjoy National Park Week,” a page that urges citizens to visit national parks and monuments.

“Today, we are putting the states back in charge. It’s a big thing,” Trump said in signing his order.

Back in charge?

He added that his order would “end these abuses and return control to the people, the people of all of the states, the people of the United States.”

Return control?

In fact, the states have never controlled public lands, so they can hardly be “returned.” The original 13 colonies, when they went from being independent states to part of a nation, turned their land holdings over to the federal government.

Thereafter, as the nation moved west, the federal government allocated 30 states some public lands to help them pay for their school costs. Those states still hold those lands, if they have managed them well. Nevada received 3,992,000 acres in school trust lands and has fewer than 3,000 remaining.

But these were grants, not returns of land. The land involved had always previously been federal holdings, in Nevada’s case since the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo of 1848, when the United States more or less took Nevada and other territory from Mexico at gunpoint.

In 1929, President Hoover offered to turn public lands over to the states, only to have the states accuse him of trying to saddle them with the enormous costs that would come with the transfer. Trump is having similar luck. The Albuquerque Journal responded to Trump’s order by calling it a “land grab.”

“Although the act doesn’t give the president power to undo a designation, and no president has ever taken such a step, Trump isn’t like any president we’ve seen,” the newspaper editorialized.

“And that begs the question of what Trump will do when he gets the results of his review? ... [Interior Secretary Ryan] Zinke’s review of the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument could gum up the works of a deal designed to provide access to the currently land-locked, 16,030-acre Sabinoso Wilderness, a dramatic piece of the high plains east of Las Vegas[, New Mexico].”

Salt Lake Tribune: “There is no argument to be made that monuments haven’t preserved land. ‘Free it up?’ What does that even mean? Free to overgraze and drive wherever we want? We’ve been there, and no one wants that.”

Tacoma [Washington] News Tribune: “There’s no doubt federal management of public lands has at times frustrated citizens, businesses and communities, and that regulations have hindered some access to recreation and development.

But there’s also no public will to give up on Teddy Roosevelt’s century-old vision of federal land preservation.”

In a January opinion survey of Western states by the State of the Rockies Project, a sample of Nevadans that matched voter registration almost exactly with Nevada’s was asked this question: “And, do you think that existing national monument designations for some public lands protected over the last decade should be kept in place or should they be removed?” Eighty-one percent said monuments should be kept in place.

trumP swItch Like most of Trump’s executive orders that he has portrayed as representing action, this one does little except order a study of the topic. However, his harsh verbiage toward national monuments (“massive federal land grab”) suggests the study is pro forma. And the website at the Interior Department, which will conduct the study, similarly suggests the department already knows where it is going: “The designations of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in 1996 and the Bears Ears National Monument in 2016 are considered the book-ends of modern Antiquities Act overreach.”

Outdoor apparel company Patagonia quickly stepped into a

leadership role in stopping Trump from taking any unfriendly actions toward monuments. A corporate statement said Patagonia, which has a Reno presence, is “preparing to take every step necessary, including legal action.”

As with so many matters, the national monuments issue represents a sharp reversal of position for Trump from his campaign stance as his Republican Party has enforced its doctrine on its volatile leader. During his campaign, Trump’s posture on public lands was described this way by the New Republic: “Donald Trump’s argument for conservation of public lands is pretty liberal. Amid calls from Ted Cruz and the Bundys of his party to turn over federally owned lands to states to do what they wish, Trump has taken a controversial stand: He wants to protect public lands. ‘I don’t like the idea because I want to keep the lands great, and you don’t know what the state is going to do,’ Trump told Field & Stream. ... ‘I don’t think it’s something that should be sold.’ His most surprising statement, though, is his argument that the domestic boom in oil and gas drilling should be an extra incentive to slow down: ‘Right now... it’s more of an advantage in terms of your question because we don’t have to do the kind of drilling that we did. I am for energy exploration, as long as

we don’t do anything to damage the land. And right now we don’t need too much—there’s a lot of energy.’ This doesn’t just put Trump squarely to the left of his current opponents, but to Mitt Romney, who in 2012 wasn’t sure ‘what the purpose is’ of public lands and wanted to allow states to determine drilling rights. Trump on the other hand thinks we ‘have to be great stewards.’”

Also in that Field & Stream interview, conducted in Las Vegas, Trump suggested he did not trust the states to keep public lands public: “I mean, are they going to sell if they get into a little bit of trouble?”

Now, however, he leads the GOP, which supports opening vast swaths of land for mining, commercial development, timber harvesting and pipelines.

Which national monuments Trump might be eyeing for change is uncertain. Twenty-four monuments in nine states and the Pacific Ocean are covered by his order calling for review of national monument designations in the past 21 years. That takes in the administrations of presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, and part of Bill Clinton’s tenure.

Nevada’s Basin and Range National Monument was established by President Obama on July 10, 2015. Obama designated Gold Butte a national monument on Dec. 28. Ω

Kirk Robertson 1946-2017

In Fallon on the evening of April 29, Kirk Robertson (right) and Valerie Serpa chatted with University of Nevada, Reno art professor Howard Rosenberg (left) at a fundraising speaking engagement for the American Association of University Women which Rosenberg gives each year. Robertson died a few hours later. He was a prominent Nevada arts leader and a Nevada Writers Hall of Fame laureate who helped make Fallon a cultural mecca. Born in Los Angeles, he took on roles in Nevada as editor of the Nevada State Council on the Arts journal and publisher at Duck Down Press. He was a guiding force behind Oats Park Art Center, which gave Fallon a prominent role in Nevada arts affairs and was described in the Nevada Online Encyclopedia as having “a reputation that draws audiences from Reno, Carson City and Northern California.” Rosenberg said this week that people in arts circles are “walking around in a daze” after hearing the news of Robertson’s death.

Oh, man …

we can use some good, escapist fare by now, right?

The first few months of the year have been nothing short of a downer, mired in a political cesspool. On top of that, the weather has been rough in Reno, where things that shouldn’t be floating have been seriously, dangerously floating.

Enough is enough. We need a palate cleansing. It needs to be fun time at the movies. It’s time to watch moving pictures with big, bright colors, much laughter and, yes, things that blow up real good.

I say it every year, and I will say it again: The blockbuster season starts earlier every year. March was sort of an early summer blockbuster primer, with Logan and Kong:

Skull Island brightening up a month that used to be vacant of the big stuff stuff. The Fate of the Furious was released fairly early, too, but let’s all just forget about that one, shall we? We must block the Theron-Diesel spit-swapping from our heads if we are to go on as a nation without frequent vomiting.

Last year’s blockbuster season was a bit of a bust. I still get occasional muscle spasms and fainting spells as a result of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. My physician says it’s a permanent condition that will be aggravated by further exposure to Henry Cavill as Superman, asbestos or Trump.

Here’s a list of cinematic extravaganzas coming your way. It looks like it could be a lot of fun, with some decent brain fuel/indie offerings to boot.

Maybe May will be great for Movies (oK … i apologize for that) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May

5): It’s that place in movieland where we can all love Vin Diesel as the beloved Groot (and proceed to hate him everywhere else). The crew is back with Tango & Cash (Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell) in tow. Dave Bautista’s Drax has been killer funny in the trailers. (Check back for a full review next week.)

Snatched (May 12): How long has Goldie

Hawn stayed away from moviemaking? Her

last role was in The Banger Sisters … 15 years ago. Goldie has been in hiding for a decade and a half (a good indicator of how much The Banger Sisters sucked). Amy Schumer pulled her out of retirement for a story about a mom and daughter having a tough time out of the country. It looks pretty nasty, in a good way.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (May

12): Guy Ritchie takes a crack at the legend of King Arthur, with Charlie Hunnan playing Arthur and Jude Law playing yet another bitchy British guy.

a very good movie despite the plot holes.

(Man, there were more plot holes in that thing than the entire Star Wars franchise, the Rocky franchise, and every other movie ever made put together.) It did, however, lack in gory alien content. Ridley Scott looks to revisit his abilities to scare the shit out of you with this Alien prequel that features hardcore action and lots of blood. Also exciting: It’s a Pineapple Express reunion, with Danny McBride along for comic relief—or what passes for comic relief when there’s an alien injecting its seed into your face—and James Franco playing the ship’s captain.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul (May 19): This is one of those films designed for the likes of me to not give a single damn about.

Wakefield (May 19): Bryan Cranston plays

a man who drops out of society without telling his family, retreating to an attic on his property and getting his food raccoon-style at night. The question is: Will he cook? Will he cook one last time?

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (May 26): Johnny Depp is a whore! A filthy, shameless whore!

Baywatch (May 26): Dwayne Johnson is in

something like 53 upcoming movies. This one, a cinematic R-rated reboot of the despicably horrible TV show, features the likes of Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario and Kelly Rohrbach running around in bathing suits. I’m sure the producers—Johnson being one of them—are sweating balls over the recent R-rated failings of CHIPs.

The Mummy (June 9): Tom Cruise does his

screaming, running-around thing for the latest Universal monster reboot. Cruise finds the title character, puts it on a plane ride with him, and basically brings Armageddon upon the Earth. I enjoy the sights and sounds of Cruise in a full sprint screaming his ass off. I like to pretend his fiercest Scientology critics are chasing him with pitchforks and sticks.

It Comes at Night (June 9): Director Trey

Edward Shults, who delivered the excellent Krisha last year—a film seen by no one— journeys into post-apocalyptic horror with the mighty reliable Joel Edgerton in his cast.

Cars 3 (June 16): Pixar has gone a little sequel heavy as of late, and the results are often less than stellar. Cars 2 was pretty bad. Heck, Cars wasn’t all that great to begin with, but the ride at Disneyland is awesome, and these movies will hopefully keep that ride relevant and hip. As a Disney junkie, this is very important to me.

All Eyez on Me (June 16): Demetrius Shipp, Jr., a man with an uncanny resemblance to Tupac Shakur, stars in this biopic about the late rap star.

Transformers: The Last Knight (June

23): Well, Michael Bay had claimed the prior Transformers chapter would be his last.

He’s made two decent films since then (Pain & Gain, 13 Hours), neither of which were a big success. So it’s back to the transforming robot car doodads for a big paycheck and a whole lot of slow motion and 360-degree shots.

The Big Sick (June 23): Director

Michael Showalter, one of my heroes, follows up the well-received Hello, My Name is Doris with this romantic comedy that is already getting extremely positive buzz (97 percent on the Tomatometer).

Wonder Woman

The Beguiled (June 23): Director Sofia

Coppola tries to inject some sophistication into the summer with this Civil War period drama about a girl’s boarding school. Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Elle Fanning and Kirsten Dunst star in this remake of the 1971 film starring John Wayne. Do you think the musically adventurous Coppola will use Radiohead in this period piece drama? I wouldn’t put it past her.

Baby Driver (June 28): Edgar Wright (Scott

Pilgrim vs. the World, Shaun of the Dead) was supposed to direct Ant-Man. When that fell through, he took on this project about a getaway driver. I still want Wright’s Ant-Man! Do-over please!

Despicable Me 3 (June 30): In a summer that

looks to be surprisingly slight when it comes to animated movies, this third in the series brings back Steve Carell playing the repentant evil Gru and his twin brother. Please, anything to take the spotlight off the annoying Minions.

The House (June 30): Will Ferrell and Amy

Poehler start an illegal casino in their basement to pay their daughter’s college tuition.

Amityville: The Awakening (June 30): For the umpteenth time, this long shelved movie has a release date. I think they might want to keep this one on the shelf collecting webs. It looks like donkey spunk.

Holland was marvelous opposite Naomi Watts in The Impossible, and he appears to be a good choice for Peter Parker—he’s one heck of a gymnast—in this “reboot again” installment of Spidey. Michael Keaton plays the Vulture, a bad guy role originally slated for John Malkovich in Sam Raimi’s abandoned Spider-Man 4

project. Hey, Marisa Tomei plays Aunt May. That’s crazy stuff!

A Ghost Story (July 7): Casey Affleck, coming off his recent Oscar win, costars with Rooney Mara in what looks to be one of the summer’s more daring, more experimental ventures.

Affleck spends a lot of the film under a white ghost sheet, and it’s not a comedy.

War for the Planet of the Apes (July 14):

Woody Harrelson goes up against Caesar (Andy Serkis) in the battle of humans versus motion-capture CGI apes. This franchise started in 1968, the year of my birth. It featured Charlton Heston in a loincloth and humans dressed in prosthetic makeup that was considered state of the art at the time. Fortynine years later, Charlton Heston is super dead, the apes are gigabytes, and coffee costs $4 a cup. Get off of my porch! (Bob reloads shotgun, takes a shot of Geritol and resumes whittling.)

Dunkirk (July 21): The latest from Christopher

Nolan, a World War II epic, looks freaking amazing. A large portion of it was previewed at an IMAX screening I attended recently, and it’s still the coolest thing I’ve seen on a screen this year. Early prediction: Major Oscar contender.

Also, it makes me think of Dunkin’ Donuts every time I see the word Dunkirk. I love me some Dunkin’, especially those glazed blueberry doughnuts. Who needs blueberry muffins when you have that glazed blueberry doughnut? Couple it with a large iced coffee with just a smidge of cream and sugar, and you are in franchise coffeehouse heaven. The kicker: That large iced coffee cost less than $3, a bargain by today’s standards!

Anyway, this movie looks pretty cool.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (July 21): From the director who

brought you The Fifth Element comes a movie that looks an awful lot like The Fifth Element!

Atomic Blonde (July 28): Charlize Theron’s bid to be an action star looks to be a fun one, with David Leitch, the man picked to direct Deadpool 2, at the helm. Remember her awesome fight scene with Teri Hatcher in 2 Days in the Valley? This looks like a whole movie of Charlize kicking butt …

An Inconvenient Sequel (July 28): A

scary sequel to Al Gore’s documentary. Is anybody out there as weirded out as I am over Al Gore and Tipper Gore not being together anymore? I mean, that was a power couple for the ages, or so I thought. Remember that whole PMRC thing, when Tipper tried to get ratings on music albums? Remember how condescending and douche-like they sounded during that whole fiasco? Remember when they had congressional hearings, and Frank Zappa made them both look like a couple of blooming idiots? Oh, and don’t forget, the planet is dying.

brother Mike’s favorite Stephen King thing ever. He’s been trying to get me to read it for years, but I refuse to for some reason. In return, Mike refuses to watch Breaking Bad all the way through even though I beg him

to do so almost every time I speak with him.

It seems we will never be able to share our views on these two entertainment entities.

This leaves a dark, deep hole in my soul.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard (August 18):

Ryan Reynolds plays a bodyguard to Samuel L. Jackson’s hitman, and the marketing team is having a whole lot of fun with the Kevin Costner/Whitney Houston parallel.

Detroit (August 4): This return of director Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty) focuses on civil unrest and riots in Detroit during the summer of ’67.

Annabelle: Creation

(August 11): This is a sequel about the possessed doll from The Conjuring that got its own spinoff/prequel in 2014.

Next up in the series: a prequel/spinoff/sequel featuring one of the evil sweaters the little girl wore in The Conjuring 2.

It’s a really evil sweater. It’s so evil that when you pull on one of its loose threads, it creates a hole—a virtual vortex of evil—in the middle of the sweater, and the garment becomes self-aware and finds a way to drain your bank account by purchasing home appliances at a shopping mall 2,000 miles away from your dwelling. Instead of possessing your soul, it possesses your financial identity. This requires a trip to the tailor, or basically just throwing the stupid evil, shamelessly spending sweater away. It’s the stuff of wardrobe nightmares.

This is director Steven Soderbergh’s first feature film since announcing his retirement from movies after directing Behind the Candelabra in 2013.

Happy as heck to have him back, with the likes of Channing Tatum, Adam Driver and Hilary Swank in tow in this story about a NASCAR race heist.

The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature (August

18): Yes, we are all chomping at the bit for this animated sequel. Summer truly dies hard in August when it comes to quality of releases.

… And one september mention It (September 8): Yeah, it falls in September,

summer, and it sort of caps off the season for Stephen King.

Confession: I was never a huge fan of the Tim Curry, John Boy/Jack Tripper, goofy-looking spider TV version of the novel. Actually, I wasn’t a big fan of the novel, either. Actually, screw this movie.

n a recent Sunday morning, about half an hour before sunrise, a line of 22 anglers—some sitting on top of stepladders, others standing waistdeep in the water—extended north along the shoreline at Pyramid Lake’s Pelican Point beach.

Out in the water, the Lahontan cutthroat trout were biting. As the sky to the east brightened from a pale blue to pink to yellow, the anglers cast their lines toward the sunrise, occasionally pulling in trout and releasing them back to the lake. Late arrivals rolled in, dragging ladders down the beach, while others out in the water chatted quietly with their neighbors. It was a scene of serenity, if not quite solitude.

By 7 a.m., Jose Luna, a fly fisherman from Carson City, had caught two fish.

He stood with his friend Eddy Willis at the boat launch. Willis, in for the weekend from Winnemucca, was about to head out in a kayak.

“What a beautiful day. God, I can’t believe it,” Willis said. “I thought it was going to be freaking cold out here. This is perfect!”

“We showed up at 4:30 am,” Luna said.

“It was 33 degrees.”

“You get all walks of life that come out here,” Luna said, as Willis paddled away. “It’s pretty neat. You can have executives. You can have local fishing bums. Our friends here, they’re from Utah and California, and we’re locals.

But the size of the fish that are coming out of here just attracts people from all over the world.”

TH e FAll AN D RiSe OF lO cAl TROuT In recent years, Pyramid Lake has gained attention from far and wide for the revival of its trout fishery. The story of the demise and recovery of the lake’s Lahontan cutthroat trout, a species of great cultural importance to the local Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, is an epic tale. The abridged version is this: Pyramid Lake’s original strain of Lahontan cutthroat trout was driven to extinction during the 1940s, in part due

to decades of heavy fishing pressure and a decline in the lake’s water level. When the U.S. Reclamation Service started the Newlands irrigation project in 1903 with the construction of Derby Dam to divert water into the desert, it completely dried up nearby Lake Winnemucca and reduced the depth of Pyramid Lake. It also blocked the upstream spawn.

During the 1970s, the Tribe’s fisheries department began re-stocking the lake with a hatchery-raised strain of Lahontan cutthroat trout known as the Summit Lake strain. These fish originated from outside of the Pyramid Lake watershed and were able to survive in the lake’s saline waters, but have rarely been observed spawning here naturally, and have never grown to the legendary size of the lake’s original strain.

In 2006, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service began releasing a new strain of captive-bred Lahontan cutthroat trout into Pyramid Lake. These fish, known as the Pilot Peak strain, are believed to be descendants of Pyramid Lake’s original strain of cutthroats, which were planted in a far-off stream near the border of Utah during the early 1900s and forgotten about for many years. DNA evidence supports this hypothesis, and since being released

back into Pyramid Lake, Pilot Peak trout have thrived. In 2014, they were observed spawning in the Truckee River for the first time. Pyramid Lake Fisheries has since begun raising the Pilot Peak strain as well, and each year, the fish grow larger and larger.

Luna, who has been fishing Pyramid Lake since 2001, said the difference is noticeable. He’s not complaining.

“The fish that are coming out right now are just humongous—huge," Luna said.

“Five years ago, you’d get an eight pounder and be like, ‘Oh my God, it’s an eight pounder.’ In the last few years, They’ve gone from eight to 10, to 15, to 20 pounds.

I caught my first 20 pounder two years ago.

Like, holy crap.”

As the Pilot Peak trout grow larger, so too do the crowds of people fishing along Pyramid’s shoreline. According to Debra Harry, business officer for the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, the tribe sold 40,211 fishing permits in 2016. The numbers aren’t in yet for 2017, but according to many who fish there, the beaches this year have been quite crowded—especially after damage from January storms resulted in the closure of many of Pyramid’s fishing areas.

Rob Anderson, a local fishing guide, has been fishing at Pyramid Lake for 20 years and has noticed many changes in fishing culture during that time. First, there was the rise of ladder fishing, a technique that is fairly unique to Pyramid Lake, which Anderson said grew popular during the late 1990s. Step ladders, many of which are customized with seats, wheels and other accessories, keep the anglers out of the cold water and make casting easier.

Over the years, Anderson has noticed an increase in the popularity of fly fishing at Pyramid Lake. He has seen catch-and-release fishing become more common, and derbies—in which fish are killed and brought to a checkpoint to be weighed and measured—have lost favor among many anglers who prefer to see the trout live.

“I think that we, as human beings, have evolved into the attitude that there’s more of us than there are of [the fish],” Anderson said. “There’s a lot more of that catch-and-release mentality, or picking out a specific fish or animal to harvest and planning to do the right thing with it. When I was growing up, there was nothing like that.”

Most of Anderson’s clients come from California, but he has also guided for visitors from all over the world, especially in the last few years as word of Pyramid Lake’s trout has spread.

Nevertheless, he said that there is a tightknit community of fishermen out at the lake, and that’s one of his favorite things about spending time there.

“It’s pretty cool, the camaraderie,” Anderson said. “It’s funny, you get up at four in the morning and run out there, you’re tired, you’ve had half a cup of coffee. Some guy moves his ladder in a little too close to you, and you want to cut his head off. Two hours later, you find out

The world record for a hook-andline caught Lahontan cutthroat trout, a 41-pound fish, was set in 1925, before the demise of Pyramid Lake’s original population. Many hope that this record will someday be beat. The modern-day fishof-record, brought in on Jan. 19, 2014, was a 25.25 pounder, 35 inches long.

Bob Wheeler, a retired timber faller from Susanville, fishes the lake three or four times per week. His personal best, he said, was 19 pounds, 34 inches long—and as he continues the hunt for the Big One, Pyramid Lake is not a bad place to hang out.

“I love the scenery,” Wheeler said.

“The sunrises in the morning are just phenomenal. The people, I know everybody out there. You go out there, and there’s no stress in the day. You leave everything at home. You fish all day long, and any cast can be that big bite. That lake’s just got you.” Ω

The average adult in the United States spends between four and seven hours on social media each week. That’s according to the 2016 Nielsen Social Media Report. It can be easy to rack up the hours with visits to Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, Instagram and all of the other platforms we use to carefully curate and distill our lives into series of posts and snapshots and memes.

People sometimes talk about our online lives displacing our lives in the real world. But that seems a bit hyperbolic, doesn’t it, at least so long as there are still spaces most of us recognize as inappropriate for cell phone use?

The theater springs to mind. And if you go to the University of Nevada, Reno’s Spring Dance Concert, there’s a good chance you’ll be prompted to turn off your cell phone before the show begins. But don’t go thinking it’ll be a nice opportunity to “unplug” and stop thinking about social media.

If anything, featured guest artist Teena Marie Custer wants us to think about it more—and more deeply.

The street dance artist and hip-hop B-girl is presenting a solo work called “My Good Side.” And it’s intended, in part, to provoke questions about how we engage with media and the effects it has on us.

“I think questions of personal identity with regard to race, class and

gender will definitely be at the forefront of the audience experience,” Custer said during a recent email interview.

“But I think the overall theme of the work is about the struggle to stay true to your most authentic self as we are bombarded with images in the media.”

It’s a theme Custer became interested in while she was still an up-andcomer in the hip-hop dance scene.

“In the underground street dance world, you are expected to battle and pay your dues,” she said. “Before there was YouTube, and forums and online chats were a thing, your battles would be posted online for everyone to see and comment on. I basically got ripped apart for my dancing and performance, and, after that, became very private with how I interacted with social media.”

Custer may have been burned, but it didn’t lead to her completely eschewing social media. You can find videos of her on YouTube, including a teaser for “My Good Side” and a performance with her all-female street dance crew, Venus Fly. And she’s on Facebook, though she doesn’t make a lot of public posts.

Much of what you’ll find about Custer online actually comes from the universities and people with whom she’s worked. A 2016 blog post from a former student discusses how Custer’s class changed her “outlook on hip-hop, and consequently the greater art form of dance.” Myriad press releases from university dance departments chart the places she’s performed and the works she’s created for students.

Custer has worked with dance departments at around 30 universities, to date.

In March, she did a teaching residency at UNR—during which time she worked with 13 students who will perform one of her pieces, entitled “Quake,” during the spring dance concert. Custer described the piece as “a study in how various street dance styles can be used for connecting to spirituality and healing oneself” and “a feat of intricate rhythmic footwork and vocalization that you don’t want to miss!” Ω

Big problems Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis gloriously upstage two kaiju monsters in Colossal, a science fiction monster mash that features many twists and a psychological/emotional river that runs mighty deep.

Hathaway outdoes herself as Gloria, a New York writer who gets herself kicked out of her boyfriend’s (Dan Stevens) apartment for constant partying and being somewhat “unmanageable.” She winds up in her hometown sleeping on an inflatable mattress.

She bumps into Oscar (Sudeikis), a friend from childhood. He’s, an overly sweet and generous guy at first glance, immediately seeks to help Gloria out, giving her a job at his bar and giving her furniture for her sparse home. This seems to be the setup for a strange romantic comedy between Gloria and Oscar with science fiction/horror as the background.

Writer-director Nacho Vigalondo has something much different in mind.

Gloria awakens one morning after much drinking to discover that a giant, lizard-like creature is attacking Seoul, Korea. After examining some YouTube and news programs, she realizes that the monster seems to be mimicking her mostly drunk body movements half a world away. Yes, the monster is the manifestation of her self-loathing, out-of-control, alcoholic ways, and it’s taking lives in Korea. She feels more than a little guilty about this.

Things get weirder when an equally large monster robot shows up next to Gloria’s monster and appears to be the manifestation of Oscar’s anxieties.

Oscar is far more into the notion of having a monster under his control and starts playfully taunting Gloria.

The two monsters wrestle it out, and their battles become more intense as Oscar and Gloria begin to have bigger and bigger problems in their newly reborn friendship.

While the movie has plenty of fun with giant monsters beating each other up, it has even more fun with the mystery that is Gloria and Oscar. It becomes an introspective and even scary look at messed

up relationships and, more prominently, severely messed up dudes and their manipulative ways.

Sudeikis is on fire in this movie, delivering easily the best performance of his post-SNL career. Oscar is as clever and charming as, well, Jason Sudeikis. Many of his actions seem to be propelled by good-natured ribbing or tomfoolery. As the film goes on, Sudeikis and Vigalondo slyly reveal more and more about Oscar’s psyche and what makes him tick. It turns into one of the more interesting, intricate character studies in a movie this year.

And then there is Hathaway, one of the more wonderful actresses to ever occupy the screen. There’s been a strange Hathaway backlash since her incredible, Oscar-winning turn in Les Miserables. (Some of that blame can go to her strained attempt to host the Oscars when her co-host James Franco mentally checked out mid-ceremony.)

Colossal immediately reestablishes her as an actress to be reckoned with. She’s everything in this movie—hilarious, heartbreaking, sympathetic and sometimes full-blown crazy. Sure, the manifestation of her problems is killing helicopter pilots in Korea, but we can’t help but root for her in her struggle. Many of us probably have buddies like Gloria, minus the kaiju shadow, of course.

Together, Hathaway and Sudeikis create fireworks that surely overshadow the monsters clashing. By the time it plays out, you’ve seen what will surely stand as one of the year’s more clever, adventurous, experimental films. You’ve also seen the next step in Sudeikis legitimizing himself as a true dramatic force in film. As for Hathaway, you’ve seen more of the same—an actress in full command of her every moment on screen.

What a wonderful, weird, gonzo idea for a film.

Colossal goes into a category of movies along the likes of Being John Malkovich, Barton Fink and Mulholland Drive. Ω

Beauty and the Beast

This live-action take on the classic Disney animated musical isn’t a shot-for-shot remake of the original like, say, Gus Van Sant’s time-wasting Psycho effort.

However, it does follow a lot of the same plot points and incorporates enough of the musical numbers to give you that sense of déja vu while watching it. Thankfully, Emma Watson makes it worthwhile. Hermione makes for a strong Belle.

Since director Bill Condon retains the music from the original animated movie, Watson is asked to sing, and it’s pretty evident that AutoTune is her friend. She has a Kanye West thing going. As the Beast, Dan Stevens gives a decent enough performance through motion-capture.

The original intent was to have Stevens wearing prosthetics only, but he probably looked like Mr. Snuffleupagus in dailies, so they called upon the help of beloved computers. Like King Kong, the CGI creation blends in nicely with his totally human, organic cast member. The cast and crew labor to make musical numbers like “Gaston” and “Be Our Guest” pop with the creative energy of the animated version, but they don’t quite reach those heights. They are nicely rendered, for sure, but not on the masterpiece level that was the 1991 film.

The Circle

This is a clueless movie based on the novel by Dave Eggers, a lame attempt at satire in regard to social networking and the invasion of privacy during the digital age.

After slaving away at a temp job, Mae Holland (Emma Watson) lands a gig at The Circle thanks to her friend Annie (Karen Gillan), a top player at the company. The Circle is all of your basic modern day computer entities—Apple, Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc.—wrapped into one big digital corporate burrito. It’s run by a friendly-looking, coffee cup-toting, Steve Jobs-like entity named Bailey (Tom Hanks) and his sidekick Stenton (Patton Oswalt, a.k.a.

TV’s Son of TV’s Frank on the new incarnation of Mystery Science Theater 3000). Mae progresses from a customer service rep to a big player in the company seemingly overnight, and let’s just say that ascension is a wee bit unconvincing. Watson’s portrayal of Holland’s supposed turmoil and opinion swings lacks any sort of dimension, wit or shock value. Yes, much of this can be blamed on the screenplay written in part by Eggers himself and director James Ponsoldt. It lacks the sort of insight and dark humor this sort of film craves. But, while often an enjoyable movie presence, Watson might lack the talent to pull a role like this, one that requires her to be unlikeable in many ways. The Circle is obnoxious, sloppy and full of aimless arguments. You know … like most of your Facebook and Twitter news feeds.

Free Fire

Bullets whiz, whistle and rip with a darkly comic ferocity in Free Fire, the latest from little known but super talented English director Ben Wheatley. Wheatley has quietly been establishing himself as a solid indie director of action and horror with obscure gems like Sightseers, High-Rise and A Field in England, along with one of the better installments in the horror anthology The ABCs of Death. With Free Fire, Wheatley gets to employ his action-directing prowess along with sharp dialogue and snap acting. He’s working with his biggest cast yet, which includes Oscar winner Brie Larson, along with Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy and Sharlto Copley. The film is coproduced by Martin Scorsese, and the setup sounds like the sort of movie he should be making. Two groups come together in a deserted Boston warehouse sometime in 1978. Things go awry, and the whole movie becomes one elongated shootout where everybody is taking bullets, and the losers will easily outnumber the winners. The movie is a blast, thanks in large part to Wheatley’s staging of the event, and the actors, especially Hammer, taking it to great heights. There’s some mystery involved in the payoff, but it’s secondary to the action, which is appropriately disorienting at times.

I couldn’t always tell who was shooting who, but this works for the movie in adding to the chaos of the situation. Throw in an extremely

well-placed John Denver song, and you have what amounts to a solid, eccentric step in the evolution of director Wheatley.

The Fate of the Furious

With The Fate of the Furious, easily the most stupidly titled installment in the Furious franchise—yes, even more stupid than the name Tokyo Drift—you get to see the single most disgusting, stomach-churning, horrifying moment in cinema so far this year. That would be when Charlize Theron plants a big, sloppy kiss on Vin Diesel, the image of which is some kind of “Woman from Monster Meets the Pillsbury Dough Boy On Steroids” nightmare.

Some five years ago, I made up a list of five things I never wanted to see, and that came in at number three, right under “Donald Trump as President” and “Spiders in My Scrambled Eggs Being Served to Me By a Man with Weeping Hand Sores.” Somewhere along the way, the Furious franchise went completely bonkers and became less about cars racing around and more about dudes who think hair on the top of their heads is total bullshit and also think upper arms should be the size of a bull’s torso.

It also went off on some sort of international spy team tangent, something that worked to a hilarious degree in Furious 7. In The Fate of the Furious, the franchise trajectory becomes ridiculous without being much fun. It’s just dumb and plodding.

Going in Style

This is a lousy remake of the “old guys rob a bank wearing rubber noses” bleak comedy from back in 1979 that starred George Burns and Art Carney. The original was directed by Martin Brest, the guy who would go on to direct Beverly Hills Cop, Midnight Run and, uh oh, Gigli. This take loses all of the charm of that fun and slightly dark Burns vehicle. It’s super heavy on schmaltz, and it asks a strong cast to embarrass themselves for more than 90 minutes. Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin replace Burns, Carney and Lee Strasberg in the updated story, and that setup probably looked pretty good on paper. Unfortunately, they handed the film to Zach Braff, the guy from Scrubs, to direct. Braff does so with all the subtlety and nuance of an M80 going off in a candlelight yoga class. The heist itself insists that it is clever while being rather rote and mundane. Caine replaces Burns as Joe, the brains of the group. Joe, during a visit to a bank to complain about his upcoming foreclosure, witnesses a bank robbery. So, naturally, when he and his pals’ pensions go away, he decides to rob a bank. Then, after some gentle persuading with Willie (Freeman) and Albert (Arkin), they rob a bank. The big twist here is that they rob a bank wearing Rat Pack masks instead of the rubber nose glasses they wore in the original.

Life

This sci-fi/horror film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds is an inconsistent but overall sturdy genre pic that looks great and ultimately delivers the goods despite a few slow patches and a couple of remarkably dumb moments. Credit director Daniel Espinosa for setting a grim tone and sticking with it through the very end. Gyllenhaal and Reynolds play astronauts pulling a long haul on an international space station. Gyllenhaal’s David Jordan is actually about to break the record for consecutive days in space, and generally prefers life in the stars to life back on our miserable planet. The crew is awaiting a space capsule containing samples from Mars, and these samples will put forth an amazing discovery: life beyond our planet. Ship scientist Hugh Derry (Ariyon Bakare) discovers a cell, wakes it up, and marvels at its ability to grow at a rapid pace. He eventually finds himself marveling at the little guy’s ability to grab on to his glove and basically mulch the hand within it. So, as the viewer quickly discovers, life on Mars was probably a total shit show, because this globular nasty—a distant cousin of Steve McQueen’s The Blob—digs on killing everything in its path. The expedition goes from a triumphant discovery to ultra protective mode in a matter of seconds.

coated each bite with simple decadence. If you can’t tell, I really enjoyed this one.

At this point, the chef asked if we’d like to try a couple of his favorite creations. We agreed right away. Special plates tell a lot about a chef’s approach to building flavors. A plate of “eggplant sliders” ($13.99) featured a row of thick Italian eggplant slices, topped by large cauliflower ravioli and spicy marinara sauce and fresh basil and parsley. The skin on the eggplant slices was a little tough to cut, but the flesh of the plant was cooked through. It’s just the nature of the beast.

As with our first two plates, the sauce was the real star of the dish.

A plate of spinach and meat ravioli ($12.99) covered in a creamy pesto sauce, topped with sauteed peppers and onions, finished with a few florets of roasted cauliflower was better. Together, the spicy meat mixture and sauce were delicious, though I wish there’d been more than just a few bits of pepper and onion. The cauliflower was roasted to the point of being crisp and crunchy—nearly dehydrated— but its slightly bitter earthiness actually worked well with the rest of the plate.

By this point, we were pretty full, but we just had to try the lone dessert on the menu—deep-fried chocolate and cheese ravioli ($5) covered in whipped cream, then drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauces. The crunchy bites were still warm, and the filling of ricotta, mascarpone and cocoa was smooth and semi-sweet. The sauces provided most of the sugar, and the effect was a not-too-sweet meal topper that even a non-dessert eater might enjoy. Ω

After opening his second location, the proprietor of Hummus Fresh found he had far more floor space than his mostly takeout traffic warranted. Rather than moving to smaller digs, he bifurcated the room with a partition—creating a restaurant within a restaurant—and thus began the aptly named Just Ravioli, opened in March.

There is a self-serve row of pitchers filled with organic iced teas, and my wife enjoyed her selection while we discussed what to order. The menu is a single-page list of housemade ravioli and sauces. You pick your pasta and pair it with a sauce.

We started with breaded, deep-fried jalapeno and cheese ravioli ($5) with a bowl of basic marinara for dipping. Served piping hot and tossed in Parmesan, they were nicely spicy and had a good crunch.

There were more than enough to share.

The dish is also available with plain cheese or meat filling.

Although the menu isn’t large, there is plenty to work with in mixing and matching flavors. We tried a plate of artichoke cheese ravioli ($12.99) with kale pesto sauce. A bite of the veggie pasta sans sauce was pretty mild. I could barely taste the artichoke. Or maybe I was distracted by the really outstanding use of oh-so-trendy kale. The consistency was reminiscent of classic cooked greens, combined with olive oil, herbs and plenty of garlic. There was so much of the fabulous sauce I used it to finish off the last of the deep-fried ravioli.

This particular Saturday was the epitome of middle-class, semi-suburban life. Little League opening day and pictures, a kid’s birthday party, buying school uniforms—about all that was missing was a visit to Home Depot, maybe Bed Bath & Beyond, and I’d complete my day of domestic responsibilities.

I say semi-suburban, because I feel like I live my life straddling the line between the urban—working and often playing downtown, living inside the McCarran loop, fairly meshed with the metropolitan side of Reno life—and the suburban— Costco, kids’ sports, and yard work on the weekends. If I had to pick a place that symbolizes the semi-suburban landscape, it has to be Viewcrest Center.

What’s that you say? You’ve never heard of Viewcrest Center? You’ve probably driven past it. Sitting nonchalantly above McCarran Boulevard where Kings Row crosses, the aging strip mall—not quite run-down, but not hip either. I managed to find time for a beer on this most semi-suburban Saturday, at Chewy & Jugs, one of the bars nestled in alongside the church, yoga studio, pizza place and other businesses in the center.

I remember Chewy & Jug’s being popular with the college crowd during my University of Nevada, Reno days, a nearby alternative to the most popular bars closer to campus. I don’t know if that’s still the case, but it didn’t feel much like a college bar when I visited. An assortment of apparent regulars occupied about half the bar, enjoying banter with each other and the bartender. People walking in were greeted by name—my wife’s comparison to Cheers isn’t far off. Like Viewcrest Center, Chewy and Jug’s has that well-worn, settled-in feel—it’s been there a while, it’s

a neighborhood joint, not fancy or hip, but not a dive either. The retro beer signs and assorted old junk and memorabilia decor sort of dictate this mid level of fanciness/ dive, I’ve decided.

Without trying, I wandered in during happy hour, and it’s called that for a reason—$2.50 for a pint of local Brewer’s Cabinet imperial brown ale, called Dirty Wookie, definitely brought more joy to my afternoon. A dozen taps of decent craft beer options are available, but an ice-filled box of longneck macro lagers looks to be the more popular choice here. While I fiddled with my phone and sipped my beer, I noticed a Jack Daniel’s tap, though, so despite the mild crowd now, perhaps things get a little crazier later. At happy hour prices, my planned stop for one drink becomes two, and I could still afford to lose at video blackjack too.

We had dinner plans later so I wasn’t eating, but if that wasn’t the case, I might have considered some bar food from the dubiously self-proclaimed “world famous” grill. In addition to eating, sports betting, pool tables and a few TVs round out the possible pastimes to engage in while you drink. And despite the smoking ban, there’s still a cigarette vending machine, situated conveniently next to the door so you can grab a pack on your way out to the sidewalk smoking area.

Never one to let curiosity slide, I asked about the bar’s name. The bartender explained that the two former owners simply used their college nicknames to name their bar. I had hoped for a better story, but I guess it’s appropriate—not too fancy, not too run-down. Ω

Dialed in NV89 radio On April 12, a new, non-commercial radio station, NV89, opened shop in Reno. Here’s a sampling of what’s been on the air so far.

Friday after lunch—a jazz track, a call for songs by local musicians, a soul/hip-hop tune I liked but didn’t recognize.

Friday mid-afternoon—Elle King, the White Stripes, Cold War Kids, indie singersongwriter Angel Olsen, Father John Misty and a singer from Las Vegas with a voice a bit like Sade’s and a pop veneer.

Friday evening—the XX, Goldfrapp, something from Alabama Shakes’ Sound and Color.

Saturday—Los Angeles band Chicano Batman, Reno indie band Bluff Caller, Vampire Weekend, more XX. Sunday morning—Reno new-waveflavored rockers Asphalt Socialites, one of the recently leaked Prince tracks.

Willobee Carlan, program director operations manager and afternoon DJ, talked about the station’s aims.

“Of course I have favorite music that I’ve grown up with,” he said. “I don’t think it’s my mission to turn people on to my favorite music. My mission is to turn people on to amazing new music that we’ve discovered, that’s being released.” Carlan and fellow DJs Gia DeSantis, Malayna Joy and Jake Wagner wade through new releases on Spotify and sift through the already hundreds of emails they’ve received from bands—and they plan to throw in the occasional song from what Carlan called his “deep library of gold music, older stuff.”

The station also plays local music—and “local,” here means statewide, as the station is affiliated with Las Vegas-based Nevada Public Radio and heard on translators in rural parts of Nevada and nearby states.

Carlan, who started in college radio and worked in commercial radio for decades,

said that after that short burst of creative freedom he’d experienced in his college days, he’d been largely obligated to playing “popular, familiar hits.” But these days, when he talks about programming the station, his eyes get wide, and he gets to use the word “curate.” NV89 is following in the foosteps of taste-maker stations like Santa Monica, California’s KCRW, an NPR affiliate that favors world music, music news, and music that the rest of the world will be listening to in six months.

Nevada Public Radio President and NV89 CEO Flo Rogers explained in a phone interview how and why the station came to fruition. After KJIV—the nonprofit rock station that previously occupied the 89.1 frequency—went off the air in February, the signal became available for purchase. The frequencies between 88 and 92, Rogers said, are known as “the reserved band.” That end of the dial is allocated for non-commercial stations—mostly public radio and religious stations.

Nevada Public Radio’s philosophy, said Rogers, is this: “We want to make sure the number of public radio stations doesn’t get any less.” Another motivating factor was that the organization wants to be more accessible to younger audiences at a time when the public-radio listener demographic has been graying for a while. Rogers’ board found bank financing to start NV89 with, and the station will also depend on pledge drives and membership drives.

The station is planning at least one improvement soon—a studio for live concerts that should seat about 25 to 30—and it’s already made another one. The on-air playlist is now available, so if you hear a leaked Prince track or a Las Vegas artist you don’t already know, you won’t be in the dark about a song that just played.

pringtime means cannabis plants are popping up in backyards across the valley. It’s tempting to fiddle with them while waiting for summer heat to come, but too much micromanaging can hurt. Be patient and try these early growing tips.

transplanting When transferring a germinated seed to dirt, start with soil in a disposable plastic cup. A few weeks later, transplant the sprout into its final container. Some growers recommend transplanting twice before going to the final container. But it can risk shocking the plant with a botched transfer, which will slow growth until it recovers.

Don’t transplant in direct sunlight.

Cannabis roots hate that. Transplanting at dusk is less shocking and allows the plant to adjust before morning. Make sure the dirt is moist enough to hold the root ball together, and move the plant quickly from one container to another. Some leaves may start to droop, but they should look alert in a day or two. If the plant goes into shock, however, additives like Superthrive Vitamin Solution that can help it recover.

Overwatering is the most common mistake growers make. Don’t water every day. Dig into the soil 2 inches. If it feels dry to the touch, then water. Moisture meters are available for about $15 and can better determine dampness 10 inches down.

Fabric grow containers allow for the best drainage. Otherwise, drill more holes into the bottom of all plastic, fiber or wood containers, and avoid ceramic pots with a single drain hole.

A small aquarium pump, available at pet or grow stores, can oxygenate 5 gallons of water. Aim the pump straight upward to create “flooming” — a bulge of rising water at the surface.

Swarm fuzzies I got in an argument with my boyfriend about the reason not to have sex outside our relationship.

He said he wouldn’t do it because he wouldn’t want to hurt me. I said he shouldn’t want to be with anybody else, but he said that’s just not realistic for guys. Are men really just these unfeeling sex machines?

A man can really love a woman and still want to spend the afternoon wrecking the bed with her BFF, her well-preserved mom and her sister.

As awful as that probably sounds, men’s evolved lust for sexual variety isn’t something you and other women should take personally. Evolutionary psychologists David Buss and David Schmitt explain that genetically speaking, it’s generally in a man’s interest to pursue a “short-term sexual strategy” with as many women as possible.

This isn’t to say men evolved to be entirely without discernment.

Because “beautiful” features—like pillowy lips and an hourglass bod— reflect health and fertility, if a man has a choice in casual sexmates, he’ll go for a hot woman, but if he doesn’t, he’ll go for a woman with a pulse.

However, Buss and Schmitt explain that there are times when it’s to a man’s advantage to pursue a “long-term sexual strategy”— commitment to one woman. It’s a quality-over-quantity strategy— wanting a woman with “high mate value” (one who’s physically and psychologically desirable enough to hold out for a guy who’ll commit).

Other factors include seeking the emotional, social and cooperative benefits of a partnership and wanting to retire from the time-, energyand resource-suck of working the ladies on Match.com.

In light of this, think about what your boyfriend’s really telling you by opting for “Honey, where do I sign away my sexual freedom?”

This isn’t dismaying, degrading or any of the other bummer D-words.

In fact, it’s really romantic, considering that men evolved to be sexual foragers. But for your boyfriend’s desire to make a life with you, he could be wandering the planet and sharing his life and hopes and dreams—uh, for about six minutes and 23 seconds—with a wide variety of oiled-up naked strangers.

Crazy belittle thing called love My boyfriend of five years has gotten super moody. He picks fights with me and even gets a little verbally abusive and condescending. I know he’s a good guy, and I want to help him sort through his stuff, but I’m finding myself flirting with other guys and fantasizing about cheating on him.

I wrote recently about a cocktail of personality traits that are associated with a susceptibility to infidelity in a person—basically those of a narcissistic, lazy con artist with all the empathy of a bent tack. That finding is from research by evolutionary psychologists Todd Shackelford and David Buss, who also studied the emotional circumstances in a relationship that might lead one of the partners to cheat or to want to.

They found that there are two personality characteristics someone can have that make a relationship particularly miserable. One is emotional instability—marked by mood swings and a gloomy obsessiveness about things beyond one’s control. As Buss explains in The Dangerous Passion, when emotional instability is paired with quarrelsomeness, relationships become “cauldrons of conflict.”

This, in turn, raises the odds that one’s partner will seek solace in the, um, back seat of another.

Part of being in a relationship is taking out the trash when it starts to overflow. Talk compassionately with your boyfriend about the need for him to start figuring out and fixing whatever’s causing him to act out in toxic ways.

Look for signs that he’s taking meaningful steps to dig out of his emotional winter. Give yourself some time markers. This should keep you from just blindly continuing along with a partner whose interests could be advertised as: Enjoys dive bars, French cinema, long screaming arguments on the beach, and staying up till dawn pondering the age-old question, “I know you are but what am I?” Ω

heard the exhortation “Follow your bliss!”, which was popularized by mythologist Joseph Campbell. After studying the archetypal stories of many cultures throughout history, he concluded that it was the most important principle driving the success of most heroes.

Here’s another way to say it: Identify the job or activity that deeply excites you, and find a way to make it the center of your life. In his later years, Campbell worried that too many people had misinterpreted “Follow your bliss” to mean “Do what comes easily.” That’s all wrong, he said. Anything worth doing takes work and struggle. “Maybe I should have said, ‘Follow your blisters,’” he laughed. I bring this up, Sagittarius, because you are now in an intense “Follow your blisters” phase of following your bliss.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The versatile artist Melvin Van Peebles has enjoyed working as a filmmaker, screenwriter, actor, composer and novelist. One of his more recent efforts was a collaboration with the experimental band The Heliocentrics. Together they created a science-fiction-themed spoken-word poetry album titled The Last Transmission.

Peebles told NPR, “I haven’t had so much fun with clothes on in years.” If I’m reading the planetary omens correctly Capricorn, you’re either experiencing that level of fun, or will soon be doing so.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): In what ways do

you most resemble your mother? Now is a good time to take inventory. Once you identify any momlike qualities that tend to limit your freedom or lead you away from your dreams, devise a plan to transform them. Filmmaker Kenny Holmes grew up in Reno, went to Wooster High and Truckee Meadows Community College, ran a news camera at Channel 4, then moved to Los Angeles, where he still works in television. He’s co-producer, editor and director of photography for Score, a feature-length documentary about Hollywood film score composers. The official release is in June, but first Holmes and collaborator Matt Schrader will host two screenings at the Nevada Museum of Art May 6, one at 3 p.m. followed by a Q+A with Channel 4’s Joe Hart and another at 6 p.m. followed by a Q+A with Vanessa Vancour from the University of Nevada, Reno. You interviewed almost 60 composers. As an editor, how do you even begin to deal with that much footage?

The project itself started off as—we don’t know what we’re going to get. … In the beginning we were like, hey, maybe we could get someone like Hans Zimmer. This is our first film. We had to build the trust of the industry.

We didn’t anticipate getting this many interviews. One thing we knew was we didn’t want a narrator. We had to craft our questions based on holes we had in the film. In order to fill those holes, we got more interviews. [Composers

had to find myself, whereas in news we shoot it all, and it’s right there in my face, and we put it together. We tried to keep similar pacing to news. … A lot of people have commented on this on the festival circuit. They could sense that we had a background that just was different than a documentary film background.

How long did the whole process take?

We shot a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff. Whittling all of that down into 90 minutes was tough. The original cut was over two hours. … There are still film buffs who are like, “Show us the six-hour version.”

Was editing for film a lot different than for TV? I do really fast paced editing on a daily basis, because we don’t have a lot of time. I felt really at home. We’re laying the sections, pulling down the sound bites. The only difference was I had so much more time, which sometimes is a blessing and sometimes is a curse, because I’m a perfectionist. From starting to plan, to completion, was just about two years. We both have a background in news. We’re used to doing minute-and-a-half documentaries every day with a short deadline. … We raised the money through crowdfunding—Kickstarter, Indiegogo. We did this project in our free time, before or after work, or on our weekends. We didn’t really anticipate where it was going to go.

We finished the movie last June and did the festival circuit to see if there was interest for distribution. We have North American distribution rights through Gravitas Ventures. They’re putting us in theaters in June in select cities and Canada. After that, out to digital, international as well. There’s no language barrier. People in Japan love John Williams music as much as Americans do. There are people around the world messaging us.
