Trolls Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Over here at the World Headquarters of the Reno News & Review, we’ve always received a certain number of angry letters delivered by snail mail, email, Tweet, Facebook posts, messenger pigeons, searing telepathic visions, what have you.

It comes with the territory.

Journalism is not for the thin of skin. And honestly, during those halcyon days when no such angry screeds arrive on our doorstep, we start to feel we’re doing something wrong.

But we’ve noticed a definite recent uptick in angry messages— much of it more explicitly hateful than what we’ve received in the past. The comments are often blatantly racist, sexist or homophobic.

It’s almost as if the racists, sexists and homophobes have, for some reason, felt suddenly emboldened since sometime last November. Not sure why.

For example, one recent morning I arrived to work to hear a voicemail: “Tell Bynum and van Dyke that the Democrats lost. Get over it, you fucking pussies!” Funny thing was it sounded like the same dude who called a week or two ago to complain about the “foul, obscene, disgusting language” in our paper. I thought he meant “fuck,” but apparently he meant “feminism.”

That same morning, I noticed a Facebook message which is reproduced here with its nontraditional approach to spelling and grammar fully intact: “Their is no such thing as gay nevada 99 percent of lbgt are not from here or their parents and grand parents and great grand parents and great so on i will never again look at your homo trash.”

I responded by asking the guy if we could run that message as a letter to the editor. I figured he’d back away, but nope, he doubled down, and said yes we could run his comments, and he even appended a long rant about drivers on Virginia Street.

I don’t want to normalize his attitude or perspective by actually printing his letter, or give the guy the small thrill of seeing his name in print. So there it is—no name but internet troll.

Re “Hidden history” (cover story, Feb. 16): Mr. Myers is to be congratulated on his extraordinary review of this book about gay Nevada [Out of the Neon Closet by Dennis McBride]. I can see myself in at least two places although he doesn’t mention my name.

I was a gay Assemblymember in the 1970s who was in the closet publicly but outed in my first term by another legislator. A Mormon member of the lower house who sat next to me on the floor told me about the outing. And he didn’t care. Nor did anyone else since I was very serious about my work representing my district. But in that time, being out publicly was complicated politically. At least I assumed it was. It is heartening to see how much Nevada has changed and all the heroes and heroines.

The story of Tom Ogg is distressing, and there are many such stories where ignorance and prejudice triumph. And today, I laugh when I see ads from the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce about gay Las Vegas. I moved away with my lover because we wanted to be more open about our lives and San Francisco beckoned. I will be buying Mr. McBride’s book and congratulate him for writing it, and also Mr. Myers for a powerful review plus some injection of his own considerable knowledge of Nevada history.

Re “Buses taking ‘locals’ to Tesla” (Erik Holland cartoon, Feb. 16): Instead of usually working as a crew driver for wildland firefighters, last summer my employer gave me the assignment of driving one of the buses depicted in the political ’toon. My passengers were Panasonic engineers and technicians from Japan. I told them I was unlike those who negatively viewed their presence and thanked them for being here.

Tesla has a contract with Panasonic Japan, which also has invested in the gigafactory. Panasonic has been producing lithium-ion batteries in Japan since 1994. Our community, state, country didn’t have the human capital to work on the start-up of the Gigafactory. That’s why these knowledgeable and highly skilled engineers and technicians are here.

I’m sure they would rather be back home where their families, friends and loved ones are. But they, like many of us would, didn’t turn down an historic opportunity to work abroad and have a different cultural experience. I had the pleasure to work with these gentlemen for several weeks and enjoyed the growing camaraderie that came about through learning and speaking Japanese phrases. For me it was an honor to meet and transport these admirable and kind people.

How is Single Stream Recycling Sorted?

ingle-stream recycling is now available to residents throughout Washoe County.

The program allows residents to place all recyclables in one large, wheeled cart. Waste Management handles the dirty work of sorting it all out.

Users can put newspaper, magazines, clean cardboard, plastic water bottles, plastic jugs, and junk mail all in one recycling cart. (Cardboard should be flattened before placing it in your cart, and caps should be left on water bottles so they can be correctly processed at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).)

Once we take your recyclable materials from the curb, those materials pass through several stops before returning to you as new aluminum cans, park benches and even filling for jackets.

The journey begins after our driver dumps your cart into his truck. After preliminary handling in Reno, single-stream recycling materials are sent to our MRF in Sacramento where employees compliment the work of

high-tech equipment to group like material into commodities that can be reused.

Air jets, lasers, magnets, electrical currents and shaker screens work in an assembly line automatically sorting materials into groups that are bailed and sent to manufacturing plants throughout the world.

While single-stream recycling is easier for residents, and allows for more materials to be recycled. It also requires awareness. When trash gets into a recycling cart, it can contaminate an entire truck load of recyclables.

That may require sending all that material to the landfill instead of being recycled. In fact, about 30% of the material the Reno area sends to the sorting facility ends up back in the landfill because of contamination. You can help us reduce that number by recycling only items listed on the lid of your singlestream cart.

Krasner’s fraud Our favorite case of voter fraud happened in Carson City. An elderly woman with Alzheimers voted twice. The “crime” was not uncovered until a couple of weeks after the election at the family Thanksgiving. Comparing notes, a daughter and granddaughter discovered they had both aided Grandma in voting—once at early voting, once on election day. What master criminals!

The family informed county clerk treasurer Alan Glover, who arranged a change in procedures so it would not happen again. It was the only instance of voter fraud Glover encountered in his many years in office. The same is true of every election official we have ever interviewed—rare oddball circumstances, and that’s the sum total of fraudulent voting in a nation of 300 million voters.

But Republicans always come up with isolated, freakish anecdotes to scare people into believing the notion of the ease of stealing elections—this quirky case in Kentucky, that odd incident in Montana. But they can never produce any evidence of any broad or sweeping problem of fraudulent voting. That’s because there isn’t any.

Still they keep publicizing the “threat.” Why? Because they want laws requiring voters to present identification before they can vote. The groups that do not have driver licenses—elderly people who have stopped driving, low-income people who do not own cars—tend to vote Democratic. So Republicans want to win through bureaucratic machinations elections they can’t win on the issues.

Washoe Republican Assemblymember Lisa Krasner, one of the more partisan lawmakers, has introduced a bill requiring Nevadans to show identification before voting.

Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that Republicans were arguing against a vote for legal marijuana because it would create a need for more unnecessary bureaucracy? It’s good to know that Republicans like Krasner see government as the answer to our nonexistent problems. Now if they could only see it as an answer to actual problems.

Krasner represents a Washoe district, so her action suggests a certain lack of confidence in the Washoe Voter Registrar’s office and its ability to keep elections clean, though it has an excellent record under both registrar Luanne Cutler and her predecessor Dan Burk.

And every bill costs some money. Just drafting and introducing bills involves a few hundred dollars, in Krasner’s case for a bill that is a solution without a problem. Asking the legislative bill drafting division to write it up was a waste of tax dollars. Introducing it wasted more.

With any kind of luck, her legislative colleagues will ignore it now and prevent any more wasted money on hearings.

Every Nevadan must present identification when he or she registers to vote. After that, the problem is getting them to vote at all. And voter fraud happens more in the counting end than the voting end, where it is clean as a whistle.

Krasner and her fellow Republicans spread misleading stories about voter fraud, then respond to the public concern they have generated about an imaginary problem by calling for government action that will reduce the number of Democratic votes. Now, that’s a fraud. Ω

Just add women It’s certainly satisfying to see the Nevada Legislature in second place this year in number of female members. Nevada is at 39.7 percent, just behind Vermont.

According to Rutgers Center for American Women and Politics the number of women serving in state legislatures has risen steadily since 1971 when just 4.5 percent of legislators were female, to an all-time high this year of 24.8 percent.

Marking the increasing power of women in the statehouse, a bi-partisan Nevada Women’s Caucus met, joined by female lobbyists and speakers from the Nevada Commission on Women and the League of Women Voters.

Leaders told the media they thought it was the first Women’s Caucus in the Nevada Legislaure, but that’s not entirely true. A bi-partisan Women’s Caucus operated for many years, traditionally convened amid little fanfare and media attention by the most senior female member in the legislative body. But there were no designer cupcakes or warm welcoming speeches

from legislative leaders at their meetings and certainly no lobbyists or media.

Former assemblymember Chris Guinchigliani remembers the suspicious reaction the Women’s Caucus generated from male legislators who wanted to know what was discussed in Caucus meetings and their skeptical comments when she told them the women talked about baseball. The meetings were usually held in the evenings in empty committee rooms and it was a treat if someone remembered to bring some snacks. The discussion centered around pending bills of interest to women and their families.

Caucus meetings were always congenial at the beginning of each session, but after the first month or so, it would become apparent that controversy from the committee room followed a bill into the caucus, and party ideology would interfere with unanimity. Bills that dealt with abortion were generally off limits, as was raising taxes, even to support subsidized child care or a small increase in welfare stipends.

By the first committee deadline day, the Women’s Caucus would usually splinter as members became overwhelmed with their schedules, finding less and less time to meet and little inclination to search for the increasingly smaller pieces of common ground once the easy bills had passed.

One exception to the rule was Giunchigliani’s bill in 1999 to require insurance companies to cover contraceptives as part of their prescription drug package.

Nearly every member of the Women’s Caucus supported the bill, which was aggressively opposed by the insurance industry. Ultimately it passed with just three women, all far-right Republicans, opposed—Sharron Angle, Kathy Von Tobel and Ann O’Connell.

Sometimes defeating a bill is as important as passing one. The Women’s Caucus played a key role in defeating SB 75 in the 2005 session, a bill pushed by rural judges to allow rural domestic violence offenders to complete their counseling via video-conference instead of the face-to-face

counseling required by statute. The bill passed the Senate with opposition from Democratic women but was defeated in the Assembly Judiciary Committee when the Women’s Caucus harnessed its considerable force behind the scenes to convince a majority of the male committee members of the peril of easing the requirements.

On other issues during those decades, the Women’s Caucus was not successful, usually because of a fracture over raising taxes to support social programs or ideological differences such as whether pharmacists should be allowed to decline to fill birth control prescriptions for unmarried women.

Time will tell whether the 2017 version of the Women’s Caucus becomes more of a social club than a force of substantive change. And once women achieve parity at 50 percent of the legislative body, perhaps a Women’s Caucus won’t be needed at all. Ω For more on women in legislatures, see http://bit.ly/2lQvA2y

The government did it The Oroville Dam north of Sacramento is one of a series of enormous dams built by federal and state money.

The Oroville flood of 2017 exposed the structure as poorly designed and maintained. A dirt carve-out in the side of a mountain served as the emergency spillway, but it eroded to the point of uselessness. The main spillway was also damaged.

Records show environmental groups urged the federal government 12 years ago to reinforce the emergency spillway.

A formal request for repairs was filed in 2005, but the paperwork was only completed last December!

These public works structures were built with tax money because private investors wouldn’t touch them. Former California governor Pat Brown routinely lied about Oroville Dam’s cost. His son, Jerry, is repeating his father’s mistake now with his high speed rail fiasco. The dam was not even built for Northern California, but to send water

to dry Southern California. No wonder Northern Californians want to secede from Sacramento.

During the Great Recession that started, more or less, in 2007, some talking heads urged President Obama to fund nationwide 1930s-style infrastructure projects like Franklin Roosevelt and the New Deal did. Obama promised thousands of “shovel-ready jobs” but my neighbor’s dog created more shovelready jobs than he did.

The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) first noticed there was a problem with the dam’s ability to contain storms that dramatically ended California’s five-year drought.

On February 8 came the first official announcement that there was “no imminent danger.” DWR released water down the damaged spillway while state fire/forestry officials frantically tried to clear debris from the eroded emergency spillway. Helicopters were dropping rocks to try to fill in the damaged spillway.

While citizens were being told a dam this size could never fail (remember the Titanic!), early on Feb. 12, California Fish and Wildlife evacuated the salmon from the Feather River Fish Hatchery.

More than five hours after the fish were rescued, the citizens emergency evacuation order was finally issued. If the dam fails, a 30 foot high wall of water resulting in a hundred foot deep lake would wipe out close to a dozen towns. If the rains keep up, the waters could still overflow, especially if snow packs suddenly melt.

The emergency evacuation disrupted the lives of almost 200,000 residents. Can you imagine the traffic jams, gas station and grocery store chaos? Lesson learned?

Never wait for the official evacuation order to get out.

The 2005 Hurricane Katrina disaster story in New Orleans is eerily similar to Oroville. Katrina featured the same slow federal government response to repeated requests for help to the Bush Administration, as well as the failure of

federal help when it came. Bush’s lame “Heck of a Job, Brownie” comment to FEMA Director Michael Brown is a political classic. Thousands of mostly poor blacks were trapped in the flooded city as few residents had cars and local government flubbed the promised bus evacuations.

In Oroville this year we see the same government denial, agonizingly slow response, and resulting human suffering.

Months after Katrina, it was determined that most of the New Orleans flooding was due to poorly constructed and maintained levees built by the Army Corps of Engineers.

The environmentalists are wrong to keep faith in the feds. The federal government is by far the greatest threat to the environment. You don’t have to quote Genesis to understand that private stewardship of the land is more beneficial to both humans and the planet than government’s iron web of subsidies, cronyism, ham-handed regulations, and outright destruction. Ω

ERA REtuRns, soRt of The Nevada Senate Legislative Operations and Elections Committee this week held a hearing on a measure that, if enacted, would have no legal effect.

The resolution purports to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, which was sent to the states by Congress in 1972 and was defeated after it failed to win the required 38 state ratifications by the 1982 deadline. In Nevada, it was voted on in the legislature three times, failing each time.

It was approved in both the Assembly and Senate, but in different legislative sessions. In 1977, following the three legislative votes, the legislature placed the issue on the public ballot where, in 1978, it was defeated 67 to 33 percent.

Nevadans cast 185,720 votes on the advisory question.

However, the victory of opponents of the amendment was short-lived. The courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, have effectively made the ERA law in the United States with a series of gender equality decisions that rely on the 14th and 5th Amendments.

That message has not gotten to some officials, like U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who has introduced a new Equal Rights Amendment in Congress. Nor is it understood by some activists, who have pressured state legislators around the country to “ratify” the expired amendment.

Besides Nevada, Utah and Virginia have such measures before them and legislators in other states are considering doing the same.

The measure in Nevada, Senate Joint Resolution 2, refers to “the Equal Rights Amendment” although the measure sent to the states by Congress did not include that verbiage.

It is the informal name by which the amendment was known.

The ERA was written in 1923 by National Women’s Party head Alice Paul and journalist Crystal Eastman.

tRoublEd wAtERs Donald Trump issued a disaster declaration for Nevada on Feb. 17. Gov. Brian Sandoval made the request on Feb. 9 in response to damages caused by flooding in Northern Nevada in the first two weeks of January.

In his letter to the president, Sandoval noted that storms between Jan. 5 and Jan. 14 left “the eastern front of the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Lake Tahoe” with “358 inches of snow when the average January snowfall is 74 inches.”

The official damage assessment from the governor’s office is $14.82 million. This accounts only for the Jan. 5 to Jan. 14 time frame and applies only to Carson City, the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, and four Nevada counties—Washoe, Douglas, Lyon and Storey.

In the interim between Sandoval’s Feb. 9 request and the president’s disaster declaration, Elko—on the east side of the state—was hit with serious flooding. The governor declared a state of emergency for Elko County on Feb. 10.

And the wild weather continues across the state. Even as the paper was prepared for press on Feb. 21, new flood warnings were in effect for Elko and Eureka counties and isolated flooding led to school delays and trapped motorists in the Truckee Meadows.

To give some perspective to the amount of precipitation this winter has brought to Northern Nevada, consider this: The National Weather Service reported that a record amount of rain—just over one inch—fell at the Reno Tahoe International Airport on Feb. 20. This amount broke the previous record of 0.67 inches, set in 1922.

No home on the range Future of the West’s mustangs remains unsettled there are an estimated 100,000 wild horses in the Western United States, but only a little more than half of them actually live in the wild of the vast range lands. The rest are kept in corrals and long-term pastures run by the Bureau of Land Management—whose job it has been to manage wild horses since 1971.

These numbers represent a real and growing problem.

In 2015, the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program spent nearly two-thirds of its roughly $72 million annual budget on housing the horses it has taken out of the wild. And, as of August 2016, the agency estimated its holding facilities were nearly 80 percent full. What’s more, according to its figures, the number of horses left on the range is fully two times what’s ideal.

The BLM’s estimate of how many horses the range can sustain “in balance with other public land resources and uses” is 26,715. The number of horses in Nevada alone exceeds this total by nearly 20 percent.

In fact, Nevada has the most wild horses of any state by far—almost

32,000. The next highest number is 6,500 in Wyoming.

Last September, the Wild Horse and Burro Program’s nine-person advisory board recommended the BLM euthanize or sell to slaughter the more than 40,000 horses currently in captivity. The recommendation made headlines across the country, and the agency responded quickly—issuing an online statement avowing it “does not and will not euthanize healthy animals.”

That was almost six months ago.

In an email interview, BLM spokespersons Jenny Lesieutre and Jason Lutterman provided an update on what’s happened in the interim, noting that “the BLM has acquired more offrange pastures to reduce the number of horses in higher-cost corrals.”

An October article in South Dakota’s Butte County Post about one of these pasture acquisitions, reported a Powerball jackpot winner had agreed to let the BLM pasture a herd of 917 horses on roughly 50 square mile of privately owned grassland 75 miles

north of Rapid City, South Dakota— for a price of $2 per horse, per day.

The BLM also puts some wild horses up for adoption and sale. According to Lesieutre and Lutterman, until the BLM has “better tools to manage wild horses on the range,” the agency has capped the number of horses that can be removed each year at 3,500, “about the same number that leave the system through adoption, sales and natural mortality.”

In 2015, the BLM reported the roundup of 3,093 horses—nearly half from Nevada. The same year, 2,331 were sold or adopted.

Roundups have long been controversial—garnering both media attention and outcry from advocates, who allege mistreatment of the animals and a lack of transparency on the BLM’s part. Author and wild horse advocate Terri Farley has witnessed several roundups and is among those who believe the BLM misrepresents the facts of them. She’s particularly concerned by how the BLM classifies horse deaths. There are two categories under which a death might be filed—“acute” and “chronic.” Acute injuries are those directly related to a roundup—broken necks, trampling, etc.

Chronic deaths include horses that are euthanized because of things like blindness and poor body condition.

Farley believes the BLM downplays the overall number of deaths by dividing them into these categories and that the reasons for euthanasia are often trumped up. A look at reports from several individual roundups in the last two years shows the number of horses killed varied from less than one percent to closer to five. On its “Myths and Facts” web page, the BLM cites cumulative 2014 statistics, which show 17 out of a little more than 1,700 horses—or slightly less than one percent—died that year. But information from an advocacy group, Wild Horse Preservation, suggests additional horses died in 2014 after being rounded up. Records obtained by the group under the Freedom of Information Act indicate 75 horses captured during the Checkerboard roundup in Wyoming died in captivity in the months to follow.

To be clear, roundups are not the preferred method of population control—for anyone. As the spokespeople mentioned, the BLM is exploring what it considers “better tools.” This includes “evaluating the safety, feasibility

and effectiveness of spaying and neutering on-range wild horses” and the development of “longer-lasting fertility control vaccines.”

There are already a few vaccines available.

Porcine zona pellucida (PZP) is made from a protein found in pig ovaries. It’s administered through a dart and, according to several scientific studies, can be up to 90 percent effective. The BLM’s search for alternatives is driven by the logistics of administering the vaccine, which—according to Lesieutre and Lutterman—a 2013 National Academy of Sciences study found was not “highly effective, easily delivered, and affordable.”

An independent group near Gardnerville disagrees. Pine Nut Wild Horse Advocates—a non-profit—began darting mares with PZP in 2012. In 2014, a pilot program to control the population of wild horses near the Pine Nut Mountains was officially established with the blessing of the Wild Horse and Burro Program’s Nevada office.

The program was established at no cost to BLM. The Pine Nut group’s members use donated funds to pay for PZP training and certification from another nonprofit, the Science and Conservation Center in Billings, Montana. They also use fundraising to pay for the vaccines, which according to Deb Walker, the group’s president, cost about $25 per dose.

A mare needs two doses in the first year, and one every year thereafter.

But it has been almost a year since the group’s members have darted a mare. Their carbon dioxide powered dart guns—some on

loan from the BLM—have sat unused, save for target practice, since another advocacy group threatened the BLM with a lawsuit. Friends of Animals cited concerns over alleged side effects of the treatment and a belief that the program violated a judge’s court order forbidding the roundup of horses from the area east of Gardnerville.

Now, members of the Pine Nut group worry the PZP they’ve administered to 36 different mares from four bands is wearing off. But they may soon get the green light to pick up where they left off. According to John Axtell, a wild horse and burro specialist with the BLM’s Nevada office, the agency is working on a new environmental assessment that could clear the way for darting to resume as early as this spring.

In the meantime, some are wondering how a new secretary of the interior will factor into things. In 2009, as a Montana state legislator, Ryan Zinke co-sponsored a bill that ultimately cleared the way for construction of slaughterhouses for privately owned horses and made any person who unsuccessfully files an action against the operation of one liable for financial losses resulting from any injunction that halts its operations. The BLM’s spokespeople said until Zinke—now a U.S. House member—is confirmed as interior secretary, “it is too soon to foresee what changes may or may not be forthcoming.” Ω Visit https://on.doi.gov/2k4wLyQ to see details from recent and current roundups.

here are a lot of reasons that people go to the desert.

To reflect, to hide out, to be tempted for 40 days. My friend Roxanne and I are here to clear our heads.

In the last year, we’ve been dealing with all kinds of old neuroses, our newly minted 30s, and something called ERSS—Election Related Stress Syndrome. It’s the thing that happens when you hold your breath from November to mid-January, and your soul goes numb.

It’s a debilitating condition that can only be reversed by looking at something big and beautiful.

That was the plan, anyway—to get a dose of beauty before inauguration, hitting four earthwork sculptures in five days, including the “Sun Tunnels,” “Spiral Jetty,” “Double Negative” and “Las Vegas Piece.”

Right now, we’re lost. My GPS says we are circling 37°N -114°W, but there is no sign of the faint machine scratches that will tell us whether or not we’ve found Walter de Maria’s elusive “Las Vegas Piece.” Just cowtracks and mountains forever.

About an hour ago, we lost sight of our truck, and 10 minutes back, we decided that if we have to, we will eat Machete, our schnauzer-Jack Russell terrier companion, to stay alive.

“She would want us to live,” Roxanne says.

I’m noticing things that delirious people notice.

Wavy lines on the horizon. The strange way a branch has twisted into a rabbit face. How much Roxanne looks like an attractive, female version of Russell Brand. We are down to a quarter of a water bottle, and I’m losing brain cells almost as fast as the questions are coming in.

How did we get here? Is land art a hoax? What does dog taste like? Will Donald Trump unleash a fiery Armageddon upon the world? Do I smell? Does it matter? Does anything matter?

We were in a better place earlier this week.

Big ideas Two days ago, we were standing in front of something big and beautiful. Four nine-foot tall concrete cylinders arranged in an “X” formation, pointing to a rail of frozen, pastel mountains in a nowhere desert in Utah.

Placed in the landscape by Nancy Holt in 1976, “Sun Tunnels” is a piece best viewed over time. Over hours, days and especially months, the cylinders morph from culvert-like tubes into starships that let the light of constellations like Draco, Perseus, Columba and Capricorn shine through drilled holes in their sides.

During the day, these patterns are projected by the sun—another star—onto the opposite side of the cylinders, or maybe onto your body if you’re standing inside.

Roxanne and I had a long time to prepare for the “Sun Tunnels” because Google Maps parked us a mile and a half away from the site. We woke at dawn to 14 degree weather and perfect visibility. When we began our snow-crunching walk out to the sculpture, the tunnels were the size of thumbnails, then thumbs, then middle fingers as we passed a road that would have cut our hike time in half.

Whenever it felt like one of our body parts was about to fall off, the following mantra gave us comfort: This is how people are meant to view the tunnels. You can’t just drive up to them.

You could, of course, “just drive up to them” because when we got within 20 feet of the sculpture, we crossed another road.

Immediately, we began to compare the tunnels to things we knew—Stonehenge, construction materials, the kind of drainpipes you’d run through on a childhood dare. The spectacle lasted several minutes, but the real force of the piece hit us when we let go of the references and we realized where we were—in the center of a mountain range, staring at a billion-year history of rock, observing the rotation of the Earth in real time.

Big Ideas like this are the bedrock of land art—a movement that emerged in the late 1960s, thousands of years after native cultures made their respective mounds, geoglyphic lines, and configurations of boulders. Inspired as much by the tightening grip of the gallery as the ancient work itself, these men—and a few women—began leaving cities for open spaces like Nevada, Arizona and Utah—attracted to the West for reasons that drove people to the frontier in the first place—cheap land and freedom, perfect conditions to make art that isn’t so much made in the landscape as it is made a part of it.

Ironically, the most famous earthworks from this period were also funded by the same gridlock of superrich patrons and galleries that these artists rejected in the first place. But in 2017, the money doesn’t matter anymore for the “Sun Tunnels.” It was raised and spent. Documentation photos were taken, and a short film was made.

There is nothing left to commodify, and now every year in July, people visit the sculpture on summer solstice and have a massive party. Fewer people show up on winter solstice, and in between, visitors like Roxanne and I make the pilgrimage from faraway places like Reno to contemplate Big Ideas like dying in the desert in sub-freezing weather.

Not everybody is taken with the piece, however.

At the Cowboy Bar & Grill in Montello, Nevada—the closest town to “Sun Tunnels” by a good 50 miles—a man that could have been Santa’s older, drunker relative lectured us for 20 minutes: “Why the hell you would come all this way to see a bunch of stars that you can see from your living room window?!”

It was a fair question that kept us company through the next leg of I-80 and the biggest disappointment of our trip: finding out that the roads leading to “Spiral Jetty”—the well-known earthwork made by Nancy Holt’s husband and leading land earthwork artist Robert Smithson—were not driveable this time of year with our type of vehicle and our limited schedule.

We headed south sooner than expected.

Into duSt continued FROM page 11 Southern expoSure Twelve hours later, we woke up at our campsite (parking spot) in the Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge and spent some time reading signage about the reason behind the refuge—an endangered fish called the Moapa dace. With its entire earthly habitat confined to the 106-acre stretch of nearby streams in the Muddy River headwaters, the small fish has been a bone of contention and legal battleground for developers—and government agencies looking to help developers—for years.

Despite its high profile, the dace is unremarkablelooking. It is minnowy, semi-transparent, and sort of brown with a black spot at the base of its tail. In pictures, it often blends into the background and is outshined by anything else that happens to be in the frame, including blurred rocks and close-ups of hands for size comparisons.

Across the street from the refuge is the Reid Gardner Generating Station, a coal-fired power plant that chokes out a steady stream of smoke, both day and night, providing incongruous views and ashy air for nearby campers. The plant is closing March.

Roxanne wondered aloud which came first, the factory or the refuge, and “how much one affects the other.”

Per usual, I had no good answer, so I handed my friend her daily ration of dehydrated salmon bar and pulled out our map.

We were headed to “Double Negative,” the most famous 1,500-foot gash in the world, made by the notoriously private and still-working land artist, Michael Heizer.

But first we had an appointment with the contractor behind the piece, an 84-year-old man named Bryant Robison.

Robison has been a local in Overton, Nevada, since he was born in the living room where we all sat for the interview—Roxanne and I on the couch, and Robison and his wife, Darlene, on the two lounge chairs facing us. The couple held hands as Robison answered our questions about what it was like to construct “Double Negative” almost 47 years ago.

“I thought [Heizer] was crazy—I’d never heard of such a thing as an earth sculpture,” Robison recalled. “He told me they’d give me an outline of what they wanted to do and said they’d be back and put up stakes where they wanted me to go. Anyway, when I saw them walk out the door, I figured I’d never see or hear from him again. Then, about 10 days later, I got a cashier’s check from the Dwan Gallery in New York City for $10,000.”

It took Robison two months of excavation work to complete the piece. To get in and out of the giant hole every day, he had to drive his bulldozer up the 50-foot, 50-degree ramp backwards in order to avoid tipping over. No hard hat, no canopy on his machine.

“You couldn’t do it nowadays,” Robison said. “It would probably take about a million dollars to do what we did out there now.”

“Double Negative” was not as hard to find as we thought it would be. We only had to overcome our doubts that “just go straight” was the only direction we needed until we arrived at the eastern edge of Mormon Mesa, took a left, and began driving parallel to a giant gash that seemed to appear out of nowhere.

We parked at the north end of the piece, looked out over the skyscraper-sized void in the earth, and repeated the two words everyone who has stood on that rim has undoubtedly said: “Holy shit.”

Even if you’ve seen gorges and canyons before, seeing another one doesn’t take away from the awe of what you’re witnessing—particularly if its walls are almost perfectly straight and pick up where they leave off on the other side of 12

the ravine, squashing all doubts that the thing could possibly be the work of nature alone.

As we scrambled down the steep side into the sculpture, I thought about what it would be like to ascend into this pit every day on an eight-ton piece of equipment.

Once inside, the whole space seemed to close in protectively, making a sandwich of the three of us—giving us room to explore, but not too much room. Like a slot canyon, it had its own climate, its own hours in the sun, and its own geological story printed on its walls. Sandstone for a millennium with a 10-thousand-year cap of limestone on top.

Sometime in the last 50 years, a few large chunks of rock have succumbed to the groundwater flowing behind them and flaked off, leaving a blemish on the otherwise straight edge of the canyon, a whisper of a doubt about its manmade nature.

Robison said that, once, when he was younger, he asked Heizer if he would like to keep the walls maintained and the canyon cleaned out periodically. At the time, Heizer said “no,” keeping with the tradition of artists like Smithson, who viewed natural processes as a part of the work. Recently, though, Heizer has reversed his feelings on the matter, voicing concerns about the integrity of his straight lines, suggesting that the backs of the walls be reinforced with steel rods.

It’s a funny anecdote for an artist whose pro-entropy attitude has saved him from much of the “blight on the land” criticism that was characteristic of the early years of the land art movement.

Sitting there inside “Double Negative,” these dusty accusations of land degradation felt almost comical to me, but at that moment I couldn’t figure out why. Maybe it was time to go.

When we emerged from our hole, it was still fairly early in the day, and I was filled with enough misguided optimism to make the first big mistake of our trip.

“I think we can find ‘Las Vegas Piece’ today.”

Roxanne knows me well enough to understand three important things about declarations like these: They are usually bad ideas.

They are never optional.

They always end with a “come to Jesus” moment that is highly orchestrated by not-me, but that I interpret as my own revelation.

LoSt and found So here we are, wandering around at 37°N -114°W, contemplating the sacrifice of the closest thing that Roxanne has to a child, giving our last drops of water to said dog-child. Every so often, we start following a faded cow track that resembles a bulldozer mark, only to find out a quarter of a mile later, in a damp spot, that there are distinct hoofprints in our path.

It doesn’t help that we have no real image of what the work itself looks like.

Created in 1969 roughly 90 miles north of its namesake, Walter de Maria’s “Las Vegas Piece” is—allegedly—a square-mile of barely-there bulldozer-cut lines with longer wings extending out on both sides. Like a diamond with a roof on top. It was never documented by de Maria, never repped in a gallery, and hardly visited since its establishment. And although it doesn’t show up on the latest satellite imagery, it is, according to the Center for Land Use Interpretation database, “faintly visible today, to some.”

I am still hoping that we are “some,” but Roxanne knows we’re not and has started to plant the seeds of dissent.

“Do you know which direction the truck is?”

“Why didn’t you bring your own water bottle?”

“You didn’t bring your hat either?”

“How much charge do you have left on your GPS?” The sun is going down when I realize our quest is futile. We are thirsty, sunburned, and 80 percent of my battery is gone.

When Roxanne gives me an out, asking me if I think the point of the piece is that “we’re supposed to experience what it feels like to get lost in the desert,” I take it.

“Yes, that’s it. That’s actually just what I was thinking. It’s brilliant, really.”

“Yeah, it really is.”

We head back toward the truck feeling proud of our artdeciphering abilities and partially cured of our ERSS.

Leaving L as vegas It’s a beautiful morning when we leave southern Nevada. We make a ceremony out of it—packing up the truck, hand-feeding Machete, and breaking down our bed to some Beyonce.

Then we take a last look at the rust-colored mountains and head north on US-93.

Roxanne has not let me drive once on this trip, but for the first time, I don’t care. I’m having a “if a tree falls in the forest” thought about the “Sun Tunnels” and earth rotation, and I am starting to see mirages along the highway.

For example, right now I am looking at a grove of palm trees straight ahead. They seem to be getting bigger, and they look as if they are lit from behind. As we get closer, a sign that reads “Coyote Springs” comes into view beneath the canopy.

“What’s Coyote Springs?” Roxanne asks. Apparently she can see it too.

According to its website, Coyote Springs is “a Jack Nicklaus signature experience,” a sprawling golf course complete with target greens, sweeping views, and lots of imported palm trees.

But according to every other news source on the internet, Coyote Springs is something of a monstrosity.

Located in a remote valley between Apex Landfill and the Sheep Range mountains, the original tract of BLM

land was first privatized in 1988 to serve as a rocket fuel recycling plant. When plans fell through, the land was designed by Harvey Whittemore as a master-planned community to be populated with 159,000 homes, more than one school, and municipal facilities all flanking its celebrity-backed golf course.

In the nine years since its initial development, the economic downturn has marooned the 43,000-acre property in the middle of Nevada, just beyond the suburban hope that would connect it to the cash and crowds of Las Vegas.

Miles behind the fancy sign and out-of-place palms, a cascading waterfall, a dozen ponds, and 19 acres of golf greens suck water from the Warm Springs Aquifer that feeds the Muddy River headwaters where the Moapa dace live. After winning a lawsuit two years ago brought by the Center for Biological Diversity on the behalf of the endangered fish, Coyote Springs developers are currently building out the first of its master-planned homes, to be completed sometime next year.

Suddenly, I realize why the “blight on the land” argument against land art seemed so silly to me back in the canyon.

“Double Negative” is 1,500 feet long and 30 feet at its widest. It took one man with a bulldozer two months to excavate 244,000 tons of rock to create a trench that you can only see if you can find it. It is not on sacred ground, and has no water rights attached to it. In all likelihood, it will never be reinforced by steel beams, and in another 100 years, it might take several minutes to tell whether it was created by an artist or a floodplain.

“Sun Tunnels” took three years to build and four semis to truck the cylinders out into the landscape. Worst case scenario, it is an abandoned load of construction materials miles from the nearest town.

“Las Vegas Piece” required an afternoon and a bulldozer.

It might not exist anymore.

Even the biggest earthwork in the West, “Spiral Jetty,” has had less of a negative impact on its surroundings than the (poorly maintained) roads that lead up to it. In most cases, the creation of these pieces is often followed by a flurry of conservation efforts that comes with exposure.

But a golf course in the middle of the desert? Sure.

A few months ago, the Reno City Council—in a 6-1 vote—approved the rezoning of 427 acres of land outside the Toiyabe National Forest near Border Town for singlefamily use. Part of a larger 2000-acre project, the plan is to build 5,000 new homes in an area with no services and a pipe dream to pump water in from Lemmon Valley to the tune of millions of dollars.

Since March of last year, Dakota Access LLC has been publicly pushing plans for its $3.8 billion, 1172-mile long pipeline through the Standing Rock Indian Reservation after facing NIMBY concerns elsewhere and despite the resistance of thousands of protesters concerned with water contamination.

The day after inauguration, the White House scrubbed all traces of climate change language from its website— among other concerning modifications—in an effort to hide a literal rising tide that will put Mar-A-Lago at least two feet underwater in the next 50 years.

We’re in a bad, non-optional kind of scenario that requires more than Roxanne’s well-placed questions to get out unharmed. I don’t know what to do but frown at the Coyote Springs sign and take comfort in the fact that, at the very least, a crumbling trench on Mormon Mesa will still exist a few hundred thousand years from now. Ω

s we climb out of this soggy winter and into a (hopefully) sunnier spring, the roster of local stage offerings is blooming profusely. We have more theater companies than ever before and a few Nevada premieres.

Several companies are putting new spins on old stories. Many pieces are redolent of our confused and troubled times. But in spring, we shed heaviness like winter coats, so you’ll find plenty lighthearted stuff, too.

Hand to God is fresh off Broadway and making its Nevada premiere at GLM March 18-April 8. It’s the outrageous story of how a Texas church’s effort to teach kids bible lessons with puppets goes awry when little Jason’s puppet, Tyrone, might be possessed by Satan. Reno’s puppet pro, Bernie Beauchamp, is helping to bring this production to life.

GLM goes back to the Bard April 28-May 20 with the playwright’s bloodiest tragedy: Titus Andronicus.

Producing Artistic Director Joe Atack is taking the story from the last days of the Roman Empire to a women’s prison in 1920s rural Nevada, complete with an all-female cast.

UNR Department of Theatre & Dance The University of Nevada, Reno, has fresh material this spring. Family Portrait, March 3-11, is the first English production

of a Japanese play by Shu Matsui. UNR faculty member Jessica Nakamura did the translation and directs this comedy that pokes fun at our notions about family.

Another old tale is made new April 14-23 with Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice. It’s based on the ancient Greek myth about Orpheus, who travels to the Underworld to retrieve his recently deceased wife, Eurydice. Ruhl’s version tells the tale from the wife’s perspective.

The department’s annual spring dance concert May 4-6 showcases faculty work and includes a guest appearance by hiphop b-girl Teena Custer.

show draws the audience into the world of the 1920s writer, whose voice seems particularly resonant today.

Next comes Sam Shephard’s Tooth of Crime. Lewis Zaumeyer, who mounted the show at Jub Jub’s a couple of years ago, is taking advantage of Brüka’s space and the current resurgence of spokenword poetry to reinvent this unconventional rock ’n’ roll poem about the high price of fame, running April 7-22.

Reinvention is the name of the game in May, too, when Aaron Posner’s Stupid F---ing Bird gives Chekhov’s The Seagull a new life. This new comedic retelling opening May 19 still deals with a circle of unrequited loves, but Posner’s does so from the doomed bird’s point of view.

Brüka also presents its ninth season of the Brüka Theatre for Children series, with The Bremen Town Musicians, opening Feb. 23 for three public performances before it begins its tour of schools. This tale of a troupe of older animals who find they’re no longer useful on the farm is about teamwork, friendships and living the dream.

C an ’ t sit still Restless Artists’ Theatre

The area’s newest theater company is Restless Artists’ Theatre. It’s the only one on this list based in Sparks, and judging by the ambitious roster of a show every month, it’s appropriately named. The company emphasizes dark comedies, as exemplified by Bakersfield Mist, March 3-19. It’s the story of a trailer park denizen who happens upon a lost Jackson Pollack painting.

Running March 31-April 16 is Parallel Lives, a show that originated as a sketch comedy routine between Kathy Najimy and Mo Gaffney. Told through vignettes, it follows two female supreme beings as they create the world much as sadistic housewives would a living room.

Then comes A Behanding in Spokane, May 5-21, from Martin McDonagh, the comedic genius behind In Bruges. It follows a one-handed man who thinks he may have found the couple who took the other.

Not all tales of outsiders end so darkly.

Suzan Zeder’s Mother Hicks, on stage at Reno Little Theater March 10-26, is a beautiful, hopeful, family-friendly tale about Depression-era outsiders—a foundling girl, a deaf boy and an eccentric recluse whom many people believe to be a witch.

Then it’s something decidedly not family friendly: Douglas Post’s Murder in Green Meadows, May 12-28. It’s a contemporary thriller about two suburban couples who keep up appearances but who are actually quite twisted.

Between mainstage performances, RLT has a nice lineup of additional events and classes nearly every weekend, including Sunday jazz on the second Sunday of every month and the popular Brews, Brats & Ballet event, returning for its third year April 22-23.

If you were to read through the arts listings, see the words, “group show from the permanent collection,” and proceed to yawn, I wouldn’t call you a philistine.

Sometimes those exhibits are best saved for academics. But this one—a slice of the Nevada Museum of Art’s Altered Landscape Collection—is engaging enough to recommend wholeheartedly to anyone.

First off, the museum has gone to some lengths to claim a spot in the global art world, and amassing this collection has been one of its key strategies. Plans started in the ’90s, before the NMA was in its current building.

“There was a recognition that you need to have a collection, a scholarly focus, relevant in your community and also beyond,” said curator Ann Wolfe.

The NMA has other permanent collections, too, but this is the one that much of its identity is built around. Wolfe said it contains about 2,000 works so far. They’re purchased through galleries, art fairs, auctions or directly from artists. The images are far more likely to depict humans’ impact on the landscape than to present an Ansel Adams-style idealized view of it.

Scholars from other states and countries request access to the collection, and pieces from it are sometimes lent out.

“We just had maybe 15 loans go to the Pompidou in Paris,” said Wolfe.

For art nerds like me, having a collection like this one in town is a cultural rallying point akin to having our own major league baseball team or our own style of pizza. (If you happen to be new or reading from out of town, we have neither of those.)

In the current version, photographs spanning several decades are hung “salon style,” in grids. This kind of presentation can come off as chaotic, but here it’s carefully thought out and seems to encourage visitors to linger, converse and even sketch.

The photos depict plenty of evidence of environmental degradation, and they also convey the grandiosity and appeal of landscapes themselves. This combination makes for a lot of entry points. Viewers inclined to see landscape art through the lenses of, say, politics, aesthetics or geography, will all find plenty to chew on.

A few highlights stand out easily, such as filmmaker Wim Wenders’ wall-length picture of a meteor crater in Australia.

Other, quieter highlights are in danger of getting lost in the shuffle. When Catherine Opie’s poetic black and white photos of Los Angeles freeways started circulating in the mid ’90s, they sparked some interesting conversations. Opie had been previously known for big, bold images about lesbian identity. This subtler imagery re-casting Southern California freeways as quiet and architecturally graceful had the art world arguing about whether Opie did or didn’t have a responsibility to remain bold and personal in choosing her subject matter.

None of this background is visible in Opie’s one tiny print in this show.

Of course it would be impossible to fit all of the rich and revealing context and history behind every image into a group exhibit—and the ideas and images that are on display here make for a satisfying range.

But I do have my fingers crossed. Museum reps are considering related events such as lectures or gallery talks. They’re not on the schedule yet, but I’m hoping for lots. Ω

The Founder

Michael Keaton is flat-out great as Ray Kroc, the sorta-kinda founder of McDonald’s. Director John Lee Hancock’s film tells the story from when Kroc was selling milk shake mixers door-to-door up through his wife-stealing days as the head of the McDonald’s corporation. Hancock’s movie desperately wants you to like Kroc, but maybe we shouldn’t? After all, he swept in and took the name of McDonald’s from the McDonald brothers (Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch), effectively cutting them out of most profits and leaving them in his dust. It’s a beautiful looking movie that captures the essence of those old timey fast food joints that replaced the traditional drive-in diners. It slows down a bit and gets a little muddled when it tries to depict Kroc as some sort of commerce hero.

Hidden Figures

Katherine Johnson was part of a segregated division at NASA in the ’50s, a wing of mathematicians who did the work that computers do today. Hidden Figures depicts the humiliation she and two other historical African-American figures, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, went through while solving equations that helped put men safely into space. The women had to put up with a lot of racist bullshit, and the film shows their hardships, albeit in PG fashion. Taraji P. Henson plays Johnson, the “smart one” astronaut John Glenn personally demanded check the coordinates before his historical flight launched.

Octavia Spencer is her usual great self as Vaughan, doing the work of a supervisor without the title and curious about that new IBM thing they just installed down the hall. Vaughan would become crucial to the implementation of computers at NASA, as well as being the agency’s first African-American supervisor. As Jackson, NASA’s first female African-American aeronautical engineer, singer Janelle Monae is so good, it’s easy to forget that this is just her second movie role. As a composite, fictional character named Al Harrison, Kevin Costner does some of his best acting in years.

John Wick: Chapter 2

A whole lot of people get shot in the face during this worthy sequel to the 2015 breakout hit. Keanu Reeves—totally bummedout Keanu Reeves—returns as the lone assassin, originally brought out of retirement after somebody killed his dog and stole his car. Many deaths later, Wick is back in his stylish home, with a new no-named dog, intent upon burying his guns and taking a long break. No such luck.

A man from the past shows up with a marker, giving him a killing assignment that will take him to Italy and have him facing off with the likes of Common. (It turns out Common is built like The Terminator and makes for a good villain. Oh, wait … he’s sort of the good guy. Wick is actually a villain.) Balletic violence begins and never ends. This time out, Wick is wearing some sort of bulletproof lining under his suit. He was unstoppable before, but now he can take a bullet! Reeves is the perfect guy for this role, physically believable as an aging, unstoppable assassin, and pretty great with the stoic line deliveries. He’s in one mode for this movie, and that mode is badass. Reeves has himself a brand new franchise, and this one is very ripe for the next story. It also has another Reeves franchise guy, Laurence Fishburne a.k.a. Morpheus from The Matrix.

La La Land

This is an all new, original musical from director Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) that’s surprisingly low on melodrama while full of vibrancy, beautiful tunes, outstanding set pieces and a stunning sense of realism for a movie where the characters bust out singing. It’s the best original movie musical ever made. The story follows wannabe actress Mia (Emma Stone) and jazz composer Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) as they try to make it in crazy Los Angeles. They meet, they don’t like each other much at first, but then they fall in love, which provides Chazelle and his performers ample opportunities for musical numbers that surprise at every turn. This solidifies Gosling

as one of the best actors of his generation. He can wow you with insightful indies and carry big-budget blockbusters. Now, with La La Land, he takes his game to a new level. He can sing and dance with the best of them. Stone doesn’t just make her mark with a beautiful voice and expert footwork—she embodies the character with the honest and almost tragic drive to “make it” in the business.

The Lego Batman Movie

This is the great Batman story that Batman v Superman failed to be. Even better, it has Will Arnett voicing Batman with a new, super amped, still dark, but amazingly well rounded and sometimes humorous incarnation.

After all these years of dark—and admittedly sometimes brilliant—Batman movies, it’s nice to have a vehicle where we can just have fun with the character. Director Chris McKay, along with a long list of writers, has come up with a story that will please adult Batman fans as much as the kids who will most assuredly be dropped off at the local Cineplex to watch a movie while parents catch a break from the little mayhem makers. Arnett’s Batman not only faces off against the Joker (a very funny Zach Galifianakis), but finds himself in a scenario where he’s battling a smorgasbord of movie villains including King Kong, the Gremlins, Dracula, evil British robots and Voldemort (Eddie Izzard), to name just a few. It’s a nutty plot element that also allows for Batman mainstays like Bane, Two-Face (Billy Dee Williams, who was Harvey Dent in Tim Burton’s Batman) and the Riddler (Conan O’Brien!) to get in on the act.

It’s a geek fest, a movie lover’s delight that has a funny little trivia bit at nearly every turn, and an emotional center.

Writer-director M. Night Shyamalan has finally made his first good movie since Signs (2002) with Split, a down-to-thebasics, creepy thriller propelled by excellent performances from James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch). The film reminds us that Shyamalan can be a capable director and writer when he’s not getting too carried away.

Taylor-Joy plays Casey, a high school outcast who attends a birthday party but soon finds herself and two classmates imprisoned by a strange man with multiple personalities (McAvoy). In addition to the angry man who kidnaps them, he’s also a stately, mannered woman, a 9-year-old child and, well, a few others. One of those other personalities plays a big part in taking the film into other realms beyond psychological thriller. McAvoy goes nuts with the role, and Shyamalan takes things into supernatural territories in a chilling climax.

Taylor-Joy is quickly becoming the new scream queen, and McAvoy’s work will surely stand as one of the year’s most fun performances.

Four women direct short films in this horror anthology. Most notably, Annie Clark of the band St. Vincent—my hero!—makes her film directorial debut with a segment called “The Birthday Party,” where a frantic mom (Melanie Lynskey) panics when she finds a corpse just before her child’s birthday. The segment looks great, is acted well, and features some great sound and St. Vincent music. As a piece of horror, it’s a bit of a failure—it’s more jokey than horror—but the segment does show that Clark can direct performances and pull together the technical parts. It’s just not scary. Things get creepier in an Evil Dead sort of way with “Don’t Fall,” where some desert campers come into contact with demonic forces after seeing some sketches on a stone wall. There isn’t much of a story to the segment, but the scares come fast and furious once somebody gets possessed. The other segments, “The Gift” and “Her Only Living Son,” deal with starvation, parenthood and the antichrist, and they also have their moments.

Nothing in this anthology is groundbreaking, but there’s enough here to warrant watching if you are a horror fan or a St. Vincent fan.

When Fall Silent got back together, guitarist Danny Galecki was hell bent against the band becoming a softer incarnation.

Core values Fall Silent For roughly 13 years, Fall Silent was one of the most popular hardcore bands in Reno, releasing three full-length albums and a handful of seven-inch records before breaking up in 2007. In late 2015, the band reappeared for an unannounced show at 40 Mile Saloon, followed by a sold-out show at the Holland Project.

Now, the band is releasing a new foursong E.P. Cart Return and re-releasing the long out-of-print 1999 L.P. Superstructure.

When Danny Galecki (guitar), Damon Watson (drums) and Levi Watson (vocals) decided to reform the band, they required a new bass player. The spot was filled by Joe Foley, who was a fan of the band’s earlier incarnation when he was, quite literally, a kid. Foley saw one of Fall Silent’s final shows when he was 12 or 13. He still talks about the band like a fan, rather than a member.

“There are very few bands that positively reflect on what music has ever been in Reno,” said Foley. “This represented a lot of cool shit. You could play fast, sing about what you want, do what you want.”

Galecki was determined that if the band reformed, it would indeed be the same band, the one Foley loved a decade ago, not a mellowed or “mature” version.

“The three of us—we’re all in our 40s,” he said. “You run the risk of trying to be too musical or trying to break new ground.

Their new music is as assaultive as it ever was. Without being sloppy, the band sounds like it’s always on the verge of imploding. Every song is fast, direct and free of frills—like guitar solos or intricate overdubbing. Levi Watson sings over the chaos like a chainsaw.

Under all this violence, however, there is a soft heart hiding. The name of the new E.P., Cart Return, refers to a simple act of human decency—putting your shopping cart back when you’re done with it.

“It’s kind of like all those little things,” said Levi Watson. “Like cart returns and generally being lazy, shitty people—how all of that shit adds up.”

Though the name indicates a concern for the seemingly small, mundane ways in which people hurt each other, the actual songs address larger concerns. “Sterling” covers the killing of Alton Sterling by members of the New Orleans police department, the Brock Turner rape case, and Omar Mateen’s shooting spree in Florida. The song itself doesn’t bear much insight into these horrible acts of violence.

It’s instead a prolonged scream about the simple fact of them. But sometimes a scream is the only proper response.

The E.P.’s remaining songs—“Try Harder,” “Jobs, Shelter, Food” and “Youth Wasted on the Young,”—are all in some way about the fear of living a pointless life.

Murder, rape, existential despair—these themes might give the impression that Fall Silent are grim and humorless. There is anger at injustices big and small, and the members of Fall Silent do want to write songs about real issues, but none of that would matter if they weren’t enjoying themselves.

“I think it’s just fun,” said Levi Watson.

It’s the only type of situation in life where you can scream for 40 minutes and people won’t call the cops.”

“When Damon four counts and we all fire up into a song we just feel awesome,” said Galecki. “That’s what we will continue to do for another … 30, 40 years.”

It’s something to hope for—seeing these four as old men, their music stubbornly unchanged, joyfully pounding out the same noise they made in the 1990s, and screaming. Screaming at the world’s lack of decency. Ω Fall Silent plays an album release show at 9:30 p.m., Feb. 24, at 40 Mile Saloon and another one at Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor Feb. 25. They’ll play last during a noon-tomidnight skate jam.

The RCO continues its 2016-2017 season with a concert featuring conductor and clarinetist Carl Topilow and pipa virtuoso Wu Man. Man is considered the world’s premier player of the pipa, a traditional Chinese musical instrument. The 40-year-old guy I’m dating swivels his head to check out ladies everywhere. He even comments on those he finds attractive. I’ve mentioned that it bugs me. He contends that it’s my insecurities that are really the issue here. I can see how lower self-esteem might lend itself to an offended reaction, as opposed to just a shrug or an eye roll, but is this really on me?

Yes, of course your insecurities are the real issue here. Because what woman wouldn’t feel great when her boyfriend’s all “Whoa, boobs are out tonight!”?

That said, it is normal that he’s driven to look.

Men evolved to have their eyeballs all up in every hot woman’s business because the features considered beautiful in a woman correlate with health and fertility. Ancestral men who passed on their genes (and mating psychology)—the men whose male descendants are walking the planet today—are those who went for the fertile young hotties, not the 70-year-old ladies with a lot of personality.

Not surprisingly, brain imaging studies by evolutionary psychologist Steven Platek and his colleagues find that when men see pictures of curvalicious women—those with an hourglass bod, a fertility indicator—there’s “activation” in (most notably) the nucleus accumbens. This is part of the brain’s reward circuitry and, as they put it, “the seat of addictive behavior.” Regarding their findings, Platek told me, “We think that this is why men quite literally find it challenging to look away from a highly attractive female body.”

However, feeling disturbed by his girl-gawking isn’t a sign you’re emotionally defective. Consider that emotions aren’t there just to jazz up your day.

Psychiatrist and evolutionary psychologist Randolph Nesse explains that emotions have a job to do—to motivate us to “respond adaptively” to threats and opportunities. For example, that rotten feeling you get in response to your boyfriend’s ogling is basically an alarm going off alerting you that a man’s commitment isn’t there or is waning. Wanting to feel better pushes you to remedy the situation.

Again, the problem isn’t that your boyfriend’s looking—it’s that he’s looking (and commenting) while you’re standing right there, feelings and all. Be

honest with him: This doesn’t just “bug” you—it hurts your feelings. It makes you feel disrespected.

And it needs to stop. Now. Because you want to feel loved, respected and happy—either with him or with some guy you meet at his funeral, after his tragic but inevitable death from drowning in a pool of his own drool.

What seems key this time around—in how happy you two are—is the gratitude you feel. Gratitude for your partner comes out of noticing the sweet, thoughtful things they do.

However, what you’re grateful for isn’t so much the garbage relocation as what it shows—what social psychologist Kaska Kubacka describes as your partner’s “responsiveness to (your) needs.” This, in turn, tells you that your happiness is important to them, which tells you that they value you and the relationship. Awww.

Seeing that you’re loved and cared for like this motivates you to do sweet, loving things for your partner. Which motivates them, which motivates you. This helps create and maintain the kind of relationship where, when your partner blurts out “I love you so much!” your inclination is to respond in kind—instead of turning around to see who the hell they’re talking to. Ω

How did you get into this?

I grew up out in Hawthorne, and I was born in Carson City, so I’m a lifelong Nevadan. I’ve lived all over the state. I ended up getting sick when I was about 13. There was a problem with my knees, and my grandparents took me in and got me checked out. We found out that I had Osgood–Schlatter [Disease], which is a bone growth disorder. It makes little nodules of bone in my joints, and it feels like it’s sand rubbing together inside my skin. It’s constant pain, and I’ve had to live with it forever. And I ended up becoming a drug addict because of it—a stimulant addict. And during the addiction, I found that they were treating people back in China 10,000 years ago for opium addiction by using cannabis. And I self treated, and I ended up kicking the addiction completely. I have no urge for it. It also ended up taking care of the pain and the anxiety problem I had.

Some people might say you’re just trading one addiction for another.

What’s your response to that?

As somebody who was an addict, I remember what it was like to actually crave stimulants, and how bad that really was and the withdrawal involved. I can take cannabis and stop for a month. I’ll be in pain, but I’m not driving myself to go find it. I’m not willing to steal or hurt people to get cannabis.

Tell me about the book.

I actually wrote a cookbook. It’s the first of three. I took a different method than what most people see in the cannabis cookbooks, which usually involves a long, stinky process of creating an infused oil or butter or fat of some sort. I watched the Food Network for a couple of years watching them making different versions of marshmallows, and took the dry ice extract that we use in our book and figured out how to bond that directly to it without an infusion process.

Do you have an interest in selling these things commercially or is this just stuff for home use?

I actually have been trying to get a job in the industry for five or six years, and every time I try, I either don’t blend with their company or the state directly stopped me from trying to build a brand early and get into the second round of the medical market. He called it a “77 minute brain fart.” Of the many memorable lines to surface in that surreal performance, I was comforted by Trump’s description of “a nuclear holocaust being like no other.” As Inquisitor magazine noted, “good to know Trump’s been briefed.”

Twitler wasn’t finished with nukes. “We had Hillary Clinton give Russia 20 percent of the

uranium in our country. You know what uranium is, right? It’s this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.”

This is the analysis of a 4th grader. Can you Trumplodytes not see this? Are you in this much of an OJ-like state of denial? Can you not see this is the commentary of an imbecile? I mean an imbecile imbecile, the definition of which is “a retarded person with the mental capacity of a child between 3 and 8 years old.” Only the IOTUS just also happens to be in charge of 10,000 nukes.

Speaking of assholes, the phrase “you fucking asshole” is

• Seriously, it’s now time for media pushback. You wanna try and de-legitimize a free press, Twitler? Fine. Two can play that game, and right now, pal, your legitimacy is a bit shakier than the media’s. It’s just a matter of time before the media goes full blast on instant fact checking as a part of all coverage of Trump coverage.
