Personal project Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I wrote this week’s cover story.

It’s a look back at the history and vision of the local arts nonprofit Holland Project, as the organization prepares to celebrate its tenth anniversary. In some ways, it feels like a story I’ve been working on for a decade.

I became this newspaper’s arts & culture editor in 2008, not long after Holland started.

My beat was covering local art and music, and the Holland hosts both, so over the years I’ve written dozens of stories about art exhibitions, concerts and other events they’ve presented. I’ve attended other events simply as a patron—sometimes glancing around the room and noticing that I appeared to be the oldest person present.

And, full disclosure, I’ve performed at several Holland events over the years—mostly with my bands. It’s also worth mentioning that some of my closest personal friends have worked there, served on the board or been involved in other ways.

More to the point, I belong to that same generation of frustrated Reno kids who launched the organization. Growing up here, I had experiences very similar to the ones that the Holland founders describe in the feature story.

The older I get, the stranger it is to think that, as a teen, my friends and I would routinely drive down to San Francisco, see a concert, and then drive back the same night—and then go to school at like 7 a.m. the next day.

Anyway, this is still a small town, and that little nonprofit has generated a lot of goodwill over the years, partly through its collaborative spirit, which has positively affected many local lives, including mine. But I know I’m not the only one.

On a different note, I wasn’t able to attend any of the protests this weekend ... but fuck the ban.

Does Trainor care that, in most cases, a woman’s desire to prostitute herself was born out of traumatic sexual assault and degradation? Though Trainor is horrified at the supposed attack on one’s “right” to engage in sex acts with someone who likely is doing so under extreme duress or coercion, I am more horrified by his support for the practice. In this case, restrictions will produce greater human flourishing for all involved.

Because I had insurance, I didn’t hesitate to go to urgent care and ultimately found my way to an oncology office, where I was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder and told I’d likely need a bone marrow transplant. What followed over the coming months was solid medical treatment consisting of prophylactic drugs for my malfunctioning immune system and blood transfusions to keep me alive. The Affordable Care Act was there when I needed new prescriptions.

I recognize it has problems. But it made it easy for me to seek quality, low-cost care when I needed it. When I couldn’t work, the subsidies kicked in to lower my premiums. So before you get rid of the ACA without having an alternative in place, think of me. Think of what a guy who just happens to have a medical condition and a family to support. … We should all seek to retain and improve the ACA, not to destroy it.

You should call on Adam Laxalt, and other Republican attorneys general, to do an investigation of the three to five million illegals who voted for Hillary Clinton as claimed by Trump.

Laxalt should use this opportunity to gain favor with the Trump administration by being the first to lead the way and start the investigation ahead of a federal investigation. With three to five million illegal votes across the country as stated by Trump over and over again, it shouldn’t be difficult for Laxalt to find evidence of wrongdoings in the Nevada election process. When other Republican attorneys general went after Obama for what they perceived as wrong policies, Laxalt was ready and willing to sign on to their efforts. I think it is time for Laxalt to show he can be a leader in the GOP and start the charge.

Sex work Re “Liberal feminists conspire with social conservatives” (Let Freedom ring, Jan. 26): This column inaccurately stated a fact concerning sex trafficking—that the average age of entry into prostitution is 12-14 years old.

That is, most currently involved in prostitution, legal or illegal, were introduced into prostitution, legal or illegal, between the ages of 12-14 years old. Additionally, legalized prostitution increases sex trafficking (see “Theory versus reality: Commentary on four articles about trafficking for prostitution” by Melissa Farley).

Suppliers of commercial sex acts can’t meet the demand with willing prostitutes because most women don’t want to sell their bodies to strangers, so there is more incentive to force mostly vulnerable women and children to engage in “sex work.” The majority of prostitutes, legal

America best In September 1968, Republican vice presidential nominee Spiro Agnew created an uproar among both Democrats and Republicans when he said that Democratic presidential nominee Hubert Humphrey was “soft on Communism.”

GOP presidential nominee Richard Nixon sent a babysitter, Stephen Hess, to the Agnew campaign plane to watch over the Agnew operation. Hess found that neither Agnew or his aides realized that the phrase “soft on Communism” had a history.

One account of the campaign later reported, “Hess found to his horror that [Agnew] and most of his staff were delighted with the effect the ‘soft on communism’ speech had had. Apparently, they were infected by the Billy Rose approach to publicity: don’t read it, measure it.

Hess arrived just in time to stall more diatribes on the same subject. Such crowd-pleasing gambits as ‘Communists in our midst’ and ‘lists of names’ were under consideration.

At this point, it emerged that Agnew genuinely did not know that these phrases were the slogans of McCarthyism. ... In 1953, Agnew had been an apolitical manager of a supermarket, and in the years since he hadn’t bothered to find out about McCarthy.”

It’s appalling how often our leaders are ignorant of history and insensitive to the power of words. After the Sept. 11 tragedies in 2001, as the United States geared up for war in Afghanistan, George W. Bush said, “This crusade, this war on terrorism, is going to take awhile.”

In Europe, which has had more experience with terrorism than the United States and is more sophisticated in its approach to combating terror, Bush’s use of the

term crusade caused leaders to shudder. They want a battle between civilization and extremism, not between civilizations. In the Middle East, crusade is a reminder of Christian terrorism in the medieval period—and a synonym for extremism. Bush at the time was reportedly reading the study Warriors of God by James Reston Jr., about the third Crusade (Reston: “the crusades were among the most disgusting blots on the human record”). One wonders how much Bush absorbed of the volume.

Which bring us to Donald Trump. His use of “America first” panders nicely to U.S. chauvinism, to those who believe the United States is exceptional. “From this day forward, it’s going to be only America first. America first,” said Trump at his inauguration.

“America first” is a slogan used by the Ku Klux Klan (see http://tinyurl.com/zj2ta9w), by U.S. anti-Semites—including Nevada’s U.S. Sen. Pat McCarran—who opposed this country fighting against Nazi Germany, by Reform Party presidential candidate and Holocaust skeptic Pat Buchanan.

Trump seems to consider himself a legitimate judge of the quality of various races and religions: “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best,” he claimed. But the quality of his own appointees is hardly testament to his judgment of people.

Because the slogan is so associated with dark forces, Trump’s use of “America first”—however popular—sends a message that those forces are approved by a U.S. president. We would argue “America best” will never emerge from “America first.” Ω

The devil is in the details It’s been fascinating and frightening to watch the GOP Congress and President Trump decide what they’re going to do about Obamacare. Republicans voted dozens of times during the last six years to repeal the Affordable Care Act, to no avail, most recently in 2016 when President Obama vetoed repeal.

But now that the GOP controls the U.S. Senate, the House of Representatives and the presidency, they’re having second thoughts. Some still want to “repeal and replace” although specifics on the replacement are illusionary. Other Republicans advocate “repeal and delay” so that the effective date of repeal is years away, perhaps after the 2020 election, to avoid voter anger as people lose their health care.

Recently, a few Republicans have publicly called for “repair” instead of “repeal.” Sen. Ron Johnson says that repair would be better than a repeal of Obamacare because “Nobody here wants to pull the rug out from under people.” Last week GOP Sens. Bill Cassidy and Susan Collins

offered the “Patient Freedom Act,” tossing the decision of how to provide health care to individual states, a proposal sure to cause chaos in the health care markets throughout the country.

Another GOP idea is to transform Medicaid from an entitlement into a block grant, capping the federal government’s payments and giving states more flexibility. This would also likely eliminate the guarantee that everyone who is eligible could enroll.

President Trump has been all over the place, as usual. At a January press conference he pledged, “It will be repeal and replace. It will be essentially simultaneously. It will be various segments, you understand, but will most likely be on the same day or the same week, but probably the same day. Could be the same hour.”

On the afternoon of his inauguration, Trump signed an executive order authorizing federal officials to grant waivers and exemptions, reduce regulations, and delay provisions of the ACA as a first step to

eliminating a program that has enabled more than 20 million people to access health care insurance, many for the first time in years.

Nevada’s Gov. Brian Sandoval is concerned about the effort to repeal the ACA, which could potentially affect 400,000 Nevadans. He wrote a letter to the House leadership in early January pleading for caution and communication with state leaders before any decision is reached. He wrote, “States are integral players in this conversation [about health care], and the decisions that are made going forward will have a profound impact on our citizens’ lives and the health care providers who serve them.”

His letter outlined at great length how Nevada has benefited from the ACA and warned that gutting the law could leave many “without the care they need to live healthy, productive lives.”

Sandoval noted that implementing the ACA “decreased Nevada’s uninsured rate from one of the worst in the country,

23 percent, to approximately 12 percent, making Nevada one of the most improved states in this regard. Nevada also saw one of the most significant decreases in child uninsured rates in the country from 16 percent in 2012 to eight percent in 2015.

This means over 92 percent of the children in Nevada have health care coverage ... 32 percent of them by Nevada Medicaid.”

The Commonwealth Fund projects that 22,000 Nevada jobs will be eliminated if the ACA is repealed, resulting in $377 million in lost tax revenue by 2023.

If Nevada’s congressional delegation supports the GOP in their quest to deprive Nevadans of their jobs and their health care coverage while also reducing revenue to hospitals, providers and the state budget, they should be prepared to face the fury of their constituents. Progressives have established a regular Tuesday protest at noon at the federal building in Reno to make their voices heard. Ω

Can school grants be saved?

Gov. Sandoval’s State of the State speech painted a rosy picture for Nevada, but constitutional conservatives are concerned that his $8.1 billion proposed budget only contains $60 million for school choice.

The Educational Savings Account (ESA) program, the jewel of the 2015 Republican controlled legislature, is in danger. After surviving two separate constitutional challenges, the legislation was put on hold by the Nevada Supreme Court. The court ruled the program could not be paid for by the State Distributive School Account because it took funding from already-allocated public school moneys in violation of the Nevada Constitution.

The Republican-controlled special legislative session failed to correct this technical issue and, in November, the Democrats took over the legislature. Now, a legislative battle looms over how—or if—the ESAs will be funded.

To deny funding would be a major disappointment for the more than 8,000

parents already signed up. ESA proponents welcome that the governor has put the funding in his proposed budget, but say that it is just a start. They would like to see it doubled.

Las Vegas Democrats like new Senate Majority Leader Aaron Ford and likely House speaker Jason Frierson have already expressed opposition. Northern Nevada Dems joined the chorus, with new Assembly Democratic Whip Mike Sprinkle of Sparks and Assembly Democratic Leader Teresa BenetizThompson of Reno critical of using the new Commerce Tax revenue to allow parents to choose private school options.

Maybe more magnet or charter schools, but private school choice for parents is not something Democrats want to allow.

Many believe the school choice movement began with libertarian economist Milton Friedman. But Friedman only revived the original classical liberal concept of education, formulated by John Stuart Mill in his 1859 essay “On

Liberty.” Mill wrote the state’s only obligation was to ensure that citizens in a democracy be able to read and write in order to understand the issues of the day.

Most parents naturally want what is best for their children, and most children want to learn. Mill advocated state testing for literacy, accompanied by fines for terribly negligent parents, and coupled with aid for the indigent to attend private schools—i.e vouchers—as the only state involvement.

The actual state provision and control of education was to be a very last resort. The markets would provide the tools for learning the classics and the trades.

Instead the Prussian model of statecontrolled education designed to mold future bureaucrats and military leaders for a strong centralized state prevailed.

American progressives created the system of “free,” compulsory, state-run K-12 education that attempts to mold future Democrats or Republicans, just as Mill foretold. After decades of mediocrity and outright failure of public schools,

the modern school choice movement was born. President Trump’s controversial nomination of choice activist Betsy DeVos to head the Department of Education signals school choice is now a permanent, ascendant movement.

To use a well worn progressive phrase, the Democrats are on the wrong side of history. They are champions of an outdated model of education that simply doesn’t provide good enough outcomes to justify its high costs. The dominance of the state in education helped create the PC culture Trump voters voted against.

The bureaucratic imposition of “zero tolerance” and the stationing of police (school resource officers) in public schools with arrest powers alarms many parents. Even the ACLU opposes School to Prison without recognizing it is a natural outgrowth of state control.

Nevada could be America’s leading laboratory of educational experimentation.

But only if the reactionary Dems can be persuaded to allow it. Ω

now this is tempting.

‘RemembeR the IndIans’ In an interview with Indian Country before she left office, Obama Interior Secretary Sally Jewell left a piece of advice she had been given.

“I had no real understanding of the importance of self-governance and self-determination and the trust and treaty rights that are a fundamental obligation of the U.S. government,” Jewell said, describing her arrival in D.C. But she said an Interior official named Kevin Washburn gave her some advice which she said would be useful to the Trump administration: “He said, ‘Sally, it’s as simple as this: Don’t forget the Indians.’ It’s not simple, but it’s really important, and it’s a simple phrase that reminded me through the course of my tenure that my job is complicated, the federal government is complicated—there are many different moving parts— but if you just remember our obligations to tribal nations, those trust and treaty obligations and the importance of self-governance and self-determination, it will pop into your mind in every decision you make. Whether it is the permitting of a project on federal public land, or cajoling your colleagues at the Department of Education to not forget the Indians when it comes to a budget line item that deals with, say, early childhood education or some other education grant program, or making the Department of Transportation aware of how much Indian country relies on their funding and support for roads on reservations that are some of the worst in the country.”

Nevada has 19 reservations where Washoe, Paiute, Goshute and Shoshone reside.

net neutRalIty at RIsk Donald Trump has nominated Federal Communications Commissioner Ajit Pai to chair the commission. Pai is an opponent of net neutrality and will likely push as chair to do away with it.

Net neutrality is a governing principle that governments and internet service providers should handle all data equally, without imposing higher prices or otherwise treating anyone different for different methods of data delivery. When the web is neutral, a homemaker’s information travels at the same speed as Citicorp’s. And neutrality requires regulation—on an unregulated web, service providers can discriminate and provide different speeds at different prices. Critics of net neutrality call an unregulated internet “open.”

Net neutrality is opposed by Nevada’s U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, who says he opposes regulating the web.

Consumer-oriented sites like Scientific American are warning, “One of the first regulations on the chopping block is likely to be the 2015 Open Internet Order, which aimed to ensure that internet service providers (ISPs) cannot intentionally slow or block any of the content in their networks—a prohibition that forms the essence of net neutrality.”

But some business sites like Forbes are running headlines like, “Why Is The Media Smearing New FCC Chair Ajit Pai As The Enemy Of Net Neutrality?” By this, it apparently means quoting Pai’s actual positions. It gave this Inquirer headline as an example of smearing: “New FCC Chief Ajit Pai Who Promises To Kill Net Neutrality Is Confirmed.”

ACLU of Nevada spokesperson Holly Welborn took a hard line against Trump anti-refugee orders.

Refugee disarray Trump makes national policy into local affair “We are involved in these issues for a variety of reasons,” J.S. Klippenstein said in a small gymnasium at Sparks Christian Fellowship.

“Probably the most important—our faith compels us. … Jesus Christ began his work on this planet as a refugee.”

Klippenstein is a neatly dressed, optimistic, clean cut looking youth, one of several spokespeople at a news conference called Jan. 25 after Donald Trump issued executive orders providing for a sweeping crackdown on illegal immigration—“to prevent further illegal immigration into the United States, and to repatriate [deport] illegal aliens swiftly, consistently, and humanely”—and construction of a wall along the Mexican border.

At the same time, the White House said more orders were being prepared curbing legal immigration, barring Syrian refugees from entering the United States, and restricting immigration from certain Muslim-majority countries.

In addition, Trump was expected to propose a program for local and state law enforcement agencies to arrest and detain illegal immigrants with criminal records as a step toward deportation and to reinstate a program in which unconvicted arrestees’ fingerprints are submitted to criminal and immigration databases to facilitate deportation. Entry into the United States by Syrian refugees would be stopped indefinitely, and all refugees from all nations would be barred for four months.

In Reno, one attorney specializing in immigration law said his phones have been ringing steadily.

The International Center of Northern Nevada had arranged for local families to take in up to 100 refugees, some of whom have already arrived, others who are on their way and expected to face interruption in their passage. At any rate, the number accepted locally will probably be well below 100.

On subsequent days after Trump’s orders were issued, airports in the U.S. and elsewhere were the scene of standings and protests. U.S. troops were angered at their often heroic interpreters being barred from the U.S., and members of Congress in both parties found fault with the way the orders were drafted. Republicans Mitch McConnell and Dean Heller both distinguished between improved vetting of refugees and blocking members of specific religions.

ollowing national politics lately has been a bit like watching a family member get mixed up in an abusive relationship. It’s hard to see a person—or, in this case, nation—that you love continue to make poor choices.

You want to help. You obsess and worry and feel like nothing you do is enough. Your own health starts to suffer. You feel confused. It can be difficult to sleep or focus on anything else.

The Holland Project, Reno’s youth-oriented arts organization, turns 10 by Brad Bynum photos by Eric Marks

“This is the time when we have to look toward organizations like the Holland Project and say, this is the undeniable positive change that this organization has brought to our community,” said Chelsie Rose Kern. She first encountered the local nonprofit organization, which presents all-ages workshops, concerts and gallery exhibitions tailored for young people, when she was an 18-year-old who had just moved to Reno. Now, 10 years later, she’s president of the organization’s board of directors.

“There are powers that be out there that don’t like that, that don’t like the arts, obviously, or alternative lifestyles, and by looking at organizations like the Holland Project, we can continue to be emboldened by those values, even in dark times,” she continued. “This last week [since the presidential inauguration] has been very trying for me. But I grew up—this current political environment, that’s what my home was like, paired with drug addiction. I could have been like those people, but the Holland Project and some other extenuating circumstances, opened up my worldview to something totally different, and because of that, I’m a totally different person. It is hard to celebrate right now, because I feel like there’s so much activism that needs to be done, but it’s crucial that we look at organizations like the Holland Project and Planned Parenthood or whatever—that might lose funding or be shut down because the powers that be don’t agree with their values—and celebrate them.”

Which was cool in its own way, because everyone still created it—they just created in their own homes and basements, which was still fun, but not for everybody and very limited. … The feeling was very strong that we’re going to do this, let’s make this happen now so that future kids have what we didn’t.”

SOuR timES In early 2006, Curtis began circulating a proposal for “an all-ages music and arts venue in Reno, NV. Modeled after successful ventures in Holland and Seattle, Vera Reno would provide a safe, smoke- and alcohol-free place for everyone, specifically youth, to partake in art and listen to music.” The early name “Vera Reno” was just a placeholder taken directly from the Vera Project, Seattle’s all-ages youth arts organization, which in turn took its name from Vera Groningen, a similar project in the Netherlands—thus the sometimes mysterious name Holland Project.

A key part of Curtis’ proposal was under the heading “Why Reno?”: “Reno youth are hungry. They are creative, energetic, motivated and active. The city currently has very little to offer youth outside their schools. Young people who like music have little incentive to create and play their own, form bands or promote their projects. Young music fans have very few opportunities to see local acts, and even fewer to see hot national acts. More often than not, young people squeeze into basements to see local shows and small touring acts, or drive four hours to San Francisco to see bigger bands. It should not be this hard.

Additionally, in a city that caters so much toward adults and tourists, young people often feel displaced or ignored. Giving them a place of their own … will give Reno youth, for the first time, an outlet of their own for expression and empowerment.”

Curtis passed this mission statement on to local business leaders and other potential donors as well as to Reno City Council member Dan Gustin. Later that spring, Gustin phoned her to say that the city had an unused warehouse space on Keystone Avenue that might work as an initial, temporary home for the project. It was in disrepair and would require renovation, and the loan of the building would initially only be good for 18 months.

That July, Ferguson and Curtis, along with Curtis’ boyfriend, Joe Crawford, and her father, Artown founder Mark Curtis, checked out the building for the first time.

By September, they were meeting with other volunteers, asking for input, and developing the space. In December, the organization hosted its first fundraiser, a jump-roping competition. In the spring

of 2007, it began hosting small events— including performance artists and teenage bands in the new space. And the grand opening was on April 28, featuring all sorts of live music, performances, art and food.

But by June, they had to move out.

The venue was in a commercial zone, but there were homes within earshot, and a neighbor who was disturbed by the sounds and heavy foot traffic filed noise complaints.

“Despite our best efforts to soundproof, it was fairly loud,” said Curtis.

“When he started to really loudly complain and beat the drums, it really turned a microscope on the space, which ultimately wasn’t fit for occupancy. And then a noise complaint issue went to safety concerns about the building. There weren’t sprinklers. There wasn’t proper exiting for the size of the space. … We put all this time and energy into the place, and we didn’t have any more.”

At that point, the very young nonprofit organization did not have the funds to bring the building up to code.

“We were building something in a really hard time, anyway,” said Curtis.

“And we were babies. We had no legitimacy or credibility in our community because we hadn’t done anything yet, so we didn’t have a funding base or donors.

We had a couple people that had supported us through grants that we had written, but very minimal. And the kicker to it all was that the space was slated to be torn down.

I mean, it’s still standing today, which is funny, but it was supposed to be torn down.

So it was, ‘you can raise all this money, put in all this work and energy, but you’re still going to have to find another space in a number of years.’ The decision was made for us.”

Losing the Keystone space only a matter of weeks after the grand opening created a huge challenge for the organization. And it began a few years of wandering in the desert, presenting events sporadically at a variety of venues, including Studio on 4th, the River School, Record Street Café and Rainshadow Community Charter High School. In January of 2008, the organization moved into a small space on Cheney Street, where the bar Death & Taxes is now. It was too small to be a long-term venue, but provided the organization a headquarters, gallery space and a place for small acoustic shows.

It was a challenging period, but Curtis, Fuss and other organizers and volunteers stuck with it, despite the few rewards, motivated by deeply held convictions and tough-to-talk-about emotions. Crawford, Curtis’ boyfriend who had been part of the first group to check out the Keystone space, had died suddenly in April, just as the organization presented its first few shows.

In its 10 years of existence, the Holland Project has become a cornerstone of the local art and music scenes. As the teenoriented nonprofit enters its own second decade, it’s still small, but more stable now than when it started. In fact, the wheels almost came off just as the organization got rolling. It suffered early setbacks that would have derailed most new ventures, but a core group of dedicated, inspired people kept it going.

The biggest inspiration for the Holland Project was the frustration felt by teenagers growing up in Reno during the decade or two immediately prior to the founding of the organization.

“Teenagers have a lot of energy, and they have a certain amount of angst,” said Heather Fuss, who was the program director during Holland’s first three years.

“And music and art and activism are really great outlets for that energy that’s building and pent up in teenagers. There wasn’t any of that [in Reno]. There were some underground shows, some basement shows, but they were few and kind of sparse.

It was in this culture that was primarily focused on casinos. At the time, the casinos hadn’t started to go on the decline yet. So there wasn’t anything set up to keep kids engaged and to keep them moving forward, especially if you were kind of on the fringe and feeling a little artsy. You’d watch movies and see these bigger cities that had all this culture and spunk. I turned 17, and I left the same week I graduated.”

Fuss graduated from Reno High School in 1999 and moved to Seattle, where she found the excitement and vitality she was craving. Britt Curtis, Holland’s director since its inception, also graduated in 1999, but from McQueen, and also moved to Seattle.

“It really made us thirsty for a world outside of our own community, I think, for people like me,” said Curtis. “You’d go to San Francisco or Oakland on the weekends.

You’d seek out the kind of culture that your city or your town wasn’t providing for you.

It was also why people wanted to leave the second they graduated high school. Reno is maybe a different place now, but for so many people I knew then, it was like, ‘Get me out of here. When I graduate, my bags are packed. I’m done. Good riddance.’

That’s definitely how I felt when I left when I was 17. I never thought I’d come back or have the kind of connection to this place as I do now.”

It might seem strange that these two young women had roughly the same experiences without meeting each other, but at the time, prior to the Holland Project,

Reno lacked a gathering place for people with these kinds of cravings. Thus, the long-running brain drain of many of the best and brightest moving away from town. Many of those people who graduated from local schools in that era moved to the Pacific Northwest, many of them never to return, although those who did, like Fuss and Curtis, or Noah Silverman of the Reno Bike Project, or Amber Sallaberry of the Great Basin Community Food Co-op, came back with inspired missions.

“OK, Seattle is great, San Francisco is great, L.A. is great, New York is great, but it’s super, super saturated with all that stuff that Reno didn’t have at all,” said Fuss. “I think there’s that thing in you after you’ve been in a place that’s super saturated like that, that if you do have a connection still with the place where you grew up, the place that I considered home still, there’s this desire to create what I was enjoying in Seattle in the place where I grew up.”

Of course, some musically or artistically inclined young people did stick around town and find meaningful connections in town—often in the local punk and hardcore music scene.

“The scene was really unique, and has always been really great, even going back to the ’80s with bands like 7 Seconds making a name for Reno within DIY culture,” said Joe Ferguson. He was another founder of the Holland Project, and he helped forge important connections for the organization to the underground music scene that already existed in town. “It’s always been a good scene. It’s always had a really rugged, do-it-yourself attitude and ethic, and not a lot of places—there was never really a community center where kids like me could find our voice or find our values or our expression. So we were getting in trouble—skateboarding, biking around town. And all the shows were done, you could say, illegally or semi-illegally in places where it was really a house in some neighborhood or a warehouse, someplace it really wasn’t supposed to be. So I think in order to make art and music accessible and open to a broader audience, the Holland Project was kind of necessary in that realm.

The scene only fostered a certain amount of people.”

And although there was an underground music scene, Reno still lacked other important cultural amenities.

“The [Nevada Museum of Art] was not what it is now,” said Curtis. “The culture was just very different. There weren’t galleries really or cool coffee shops, really.

We’d go to Java Jungle, which was always a mainstay. We’d hang out all hours at Pneumatic [Diner] or Deux Gros Nez or something, but the pockets of alternative culture or culture that was independent or a little outside the norm were fairly small

fOr aLL ages continued from page 11 “I felt very rooted all of a sudden in Reno,” Curtis said. “I didn’t want to go back to Seattle. I only thought I’d be here for a year, and that this project would be easy, and then I’d go back to my life. When that happened, I think it really rooted me here. It erased whatever vision of the future I thought I had. And I also felt like I owed it to him. … My dedication to Holland and to Reno all of a sudden became very fever pitched, very intense. It felt like this was now my mission.

He was part of the whole beginning. He was there when we first looked at the space. He donated all of our light and sound equipment—speakers that we still use. … So there was a lot of really intense emotion for me in it. For other people, it was the same, but for different reasons.”

Changes Although she’s now the president of the board, back in 2007, Kern was one of the teens who attended the grand opening.

“I had just moved here for school, kind of, and in part due to some pretty serious familial issues,” she said. “I was 18 years old, and I grew up in Las Vegas, which—maybe not so much now—but was really devoid of anything countercultural or anything that I really identified with. … I feel super corny saying it, but the Holland Project changed my life. I didn’t have any friends, I didn’t have any connections, but I also grew up in a poor, working class family, which, I think, right now, is the archetype of the Trump voter. So I grew up in that. I grew up in a very controlling environment, but the Holland Project gave way to this whole world that I didn’t know existed, and it changed my life. I just continued going to shows, going to art shows, going to events, the double dutch competitions. All this really rad shit that the Holland Project was doing molded my worldview and who I am as an adult. … Without the Holland Project, I could have ended up just like any of my other siblings. I have three siblings, and my older brother is a year older and my younger brother is a year younger, and they didn’t get out of that environment or have any positive influences, and they’re heroin addicts, to be frank, and are not necessarily good people. But the Holland Project put in place alternative role models. … I had never seen any examples of that—that you could be alternative and positive and make good changes in your community, and you don’t have to hate everything or be repressive in the way that you live your life.”

Another one of the “first generation” of teens who went to early Holland events was Clark Demeritt, who started going to Holland events when he was 16 and eventually served as its music director from 2010 to 2015. “I remember going there and Britt and Heather being really, extremely welcoming,” he said.

“They treated you like a peer. They asked 12 | RN&R | 02.02.17

you questions and actually cared and were interested. And I just started going to everything. No matter what they had, I just went to anything Holland was doing. … Before that, I would hang out at the skate park and, like, drink. And going to Holland, I just stopped doing that. It actually made me not drink at all, because it seemed cooler not to, which is weird. As a teenager, it was weird to find the place that would turn you away from that.”

He was only 19 when he became the organization’s music director.

“They really put their all-ages money to their all-ages mouth,” he said. “‘Yeah, you’re 19? Go for it.’ The experience was fantastic.

It will always be one of the best times of my life—meeting all these people in Reno and helping kids out, and meeting all these people from abroad and being an ambassador for Reno made me really proud to be from Reno, showing people around.”

In 2011, the organization moved into its current location on Vesta Street, near the southern end of Wells Avenue and the area that nowadays people refer to as midtown.

After a few years, the organization decided to buy its building, and launched a fundraising campaign to do so, which was ultimately successful, enabling the nonprofit to buy the building in late 2015.

In its time in the neighborhood, staffers of the organization say they’ve seen changes in the area—both good and bad. The good has included the recent opening just around the corner of Our Center, which houses an LGBTQIA+ advocacy group. The bad has included some ongoing negative effects of gentrification, including rising rents for nearby residential and commercial properties.

“The neighborhood, Wells, has always been such a vibrant, Hispanic-driven neighborhood that that kind of gentrification, some out-of-town dude snatching stuff up, raising rents and kicking out longstanding businesses really freaks all of us out,” said Curtis. “It’s a real problem, and it’s exactly what propelled us to buy the building. … The rooting of ourselves has been such a theme in Holland’s history—where is our place? Where do we do this thing? And the risk of losing that yet again was really terrifying for us especially with no real place to go. … For us, securing the building now secures our future and our longevity in our community with stability for years to come.”

The fu Ture Fuss attributes Holland’s ongoing success to its collaborative spirit. Over the years, the nonprofit has partnered with the Nevada Museum of Art, the Pioneer Center for the Arts, the Reno Bike Project, Boys & Girls Club, Artown, the City of Reno and many more businesses, nonprofits and others. And because it’s driven by young people and their ever-changing tastes, the aesthetics of the venue tend to change regularly. For instance, many of the early shows were punk and hardcore, but that shifted more toward psychrock a few years in, and in the last year or

two, there’s been a lot more hip-hop. But the open-ended framework remains solid.

“As long as Holland stays true to its mission and vision that we set up from the very beginning, it will always be a reflection of the youth culture,” said Ferguson. “It’s not like, here’s a bunch of old people telling us what to listen to and what to do. … That culture is for the youth. It’s not punk. It’s not hip-hop. It’s not hardcore. It’s not metal, whatever. It’s a youth cultural thing. It’s for kids to do. Because you know Reno is just naturally a 21-plus town. If you’re not 21, you’re not shit in that town—because of the culture, because of gambling, because of drinking. … We knew that, and that’s why we started that place.”

Brigdon Markwad, who has been Holland’s music director for about a year and counting, was only 11 years old when the organization started back in 2007, but now he helps steer the bus. He said that, even during his time with the organization, he’s seen many new faces start appearing regularly at events, many of them younger teens and many of them politically motivated.

“Providing an outlet in these troubling times and providing a safe place for people to go when they’re being threatened is incredibly important,” he said. “I think now more than ever … high schoolers, young people are really upset about a lot of this. Even if they’re not old enough to vote. They’re influenced by this, are strongly affected by this, just because you get bombarded with it on social media. You have more access to your friends

and strangers socially. It gives young people a lot more access to how they’re affected and how their peers are affected by political happenings, so I think they want to be more involved.”

And he’s cautiously optimistic about the future of the organization.

“It’s easy to say it’s not going anywhere, and it’s just going to keep going straight up— and I honestly think it’s going to be, but it’s not going to be super easy,” he said. “This last year has been incredibly rewarding, but incredibly, incredibly difficult and stressful.

Britt, myself, Alisha [Funkhouser, Holland’s gallery director], and tons of other people have put so much time and energy into making the last year the biggest year Holland has ever had.”

“It’s got to be sustainable,” said Ferguson.

“All kinds of venues get shut down because they don’t mold to the needs of the people that want to attend, so they get neglected, and they fall apart. As long as it stays relevant, I think it will be there. That’s my only hope is that it stays sustainable and moves on and adapts to the new kids, whoever wants to be there and wants to make a positive impact on that scene.”

“It has a whole new group of people that are making it run—that aren’t the people that started it,” said Curtis. “One hundred percent, I feel that Holland is theirs now and not mine, which is cool. It’s exactly what it should it be. It’s exactly as the organization should run and function. It’s a young person’s organization.” Ω

There were already major, long-standing dance film festivals like the Dance On Camera Festival in New York and Dance Camera West in Los Angeles, but Rosie Trump, a dance professor at University of Nevada, Reno, noticed they were missing something.

“I wasn’t seeing artists like myself being presented,” she said. She wanted to see more work by local filmmakers and more work by women. So, in 2010, while living in Houston, she started the Third Coast Dance Film Festival.

“Whenever dance is taken off of the stage and captured in film, all these possibilities become available,” Trump said—manipulation of speed and time, for example, jump cuts instead of fixed viewpoints, the ability to undo the laws of gravity with a camera. In some cases, this all adds up to having the freedom to mix up reality and fantasy. In Ravendoe—the festival’s first Reno-made film, by Erica French and Shaila Holihan—the two dancers play animals meeting in a forest.

Flicks in FallOn Churchill Arts Council Film Series On the night of a concert, if you try to enter the Barkley Theatre with a beer in your hand, a friendly usher will instruct you to abandon it at the door. This venue, located inside Fallon’s Oats Park Art Center, is too classy to tolerate sticky floors. During the less frequent movie screenings, which attract a dedicated but

smaller crowd, however, they’ll let you bring your drink right in.

The programming leans toward vintage films but also shows newer work.

“Sometimes we do thematically related series,” said program director Kirk Robertson.

“We do ’50s sci-fi. We do film noir. We’ve done later sci-fi.” There’ve also been romantic comedies and showcases of “little-known or overlooked films” by particular actors. Once it was Nicole Kidman. This month, it’s Burt Lancaster.

The theater is primarily a music venue, and Robertson said that when he shows films there, “The sound is very good because we run it through the house speaker system.”

The art center’s galleries are open during film showings, and the bar opens an hour before show time.

The two remaining showings in the “Three With Lancaster” series are The Swimmer, Feb. 10 and Atlantic City, Feb. 17. Both films start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 or $7 for members. For information, visit www. churchillarts.org.

art hOuse DiY Artemisia Moviehouse Artemisia Moviehouse isn’t exactly a movie house. It’s an iteration of the former Great Basin Film Society that’s been showing classics, animation, foreign films and the like in Good Luck Macbeth’s 50-some-odd-seat theater for a few years.

The group has established a few fun traditions for film lovers.

“We introduce the movie, talk about directors, certain things to look out for, little insights, without giving away the plot or the ending,” said organizer John McCarthy. And sometimes the hosts offer insider trivia. Before a recent screening of a French comedy, Mon Oncle, which features a pack of street dogs, viewers learned that the director eventually found homes for his orphaned canine actors.

Other things you should know about Artemisia: “If a film is short, we’ll show cartoons,” said McCarthy. Admission is payable only by cash. And there’s free popcorn.

First they hung a sheet to use as a projection screen and invited about 10 friends for a showing of Jurassic Park and a keg of Great Basin Icky—“because there’s a dinosaur beer.” They’ve shown movies at non-movie venues like Craft Wine & Beer and Hub Coffee Roasters and branched out from beer to other libations—pairing Karate Kid with sake, Can’t Buy Me Love with rose.

“We have done everything from simple, backyard cinema to pop-up dinners,” said Ashley. “Early on we had a lot of silly pairings. … We had an event called ‘Action Packed.’ We combined the movie Commando with New Belgium’s Ranger and cap guns. It was 2011.”

Now, Ashley and Taylor, a.k.a. Films On Tap, program films for Artown and are preparing to host the two-day Films On Tap Winter Film Festival. Ashley said that the fesival will screen six limited-release, festival-circuit films that have not yet shown in Nevada theaters.

Films on Tap presents a two-day film festival at the Nevada Museum of Art, 160 W. Liberty St. Feb. 25-26. A $100 ticket, $90 for NMA members, includes an all-access pass, beer, wine, small bites and admission to an afterparty. A one-day pass is $50, or $45 for members. From page To screen Carson International Film Weekend Five women in a church book club in Carson City decided to read some work by international authors. They read a Brazilian novel.

Then they watched the film version. Then they launched a film festival in the church, drawing about 400-500 viewers the first year.

The group connected with Friends of Carson City Library, a nonprofit that could help secure grant funding, and moved to a larger venue. Now, Carson International Film Weekend is a three-day showcase for films from around the world and close to home.

Among the goals, said co-organizer Linda Bellegray, are showcasing cultural diversity and human resilience. Also, “it has to be a film that shows a significant degree of film craft,” she said.

This year’s bill features three international features—a French/Chinese film called Wolf Totem, an Indonesian drama, The Look of Silence, and the Italian classic Cinema Paradiso—and six short films by UNR students.

Also on the bill is journalism professor Kari Barber’s first feature-length picture, Struggle and Hope, a documentary about all-black towns in her native Oklahoma that are struggling to survive financially but have an unbreakable community spirit and a blues music scene that makes it hard not to nod your head and tap your feet along to the movie. The film has already won an award for cinematography and is headed to Paris soon on the festival circuit.

Carson International Film Weekend takes place Feb. 16-18 at Carson City Community Center, 851 E. Williams St., Carson City.

“There’s visual information that we can’t explain that we inherit from culture,” said Gig —pronounced “Jig”— Depio. He’s a painter who was born and raised in the Philippines and lives in Las Vegas. His imagery, which is as funny and inviting as it is serious, is made up of politics and pop culture from past and present, say, JFK at a baseball game, a hefty, imposing Mexican wrestler in a luchador mask and jack-o’-lantern print shorts, Elvis wearing his usual wide lapels plus a tool belt full of oil-painting supplies.

Depio’s images teeter between celebratory and sardonic. They can come off as odes to realistic photojournalism, storybook fantasy, or, more often, both in one bite.

Take the huge, vertical painting in which FDR drives past the Delano—a Las Vegas hotel, “a shimmering, Trump-like building,” as the artist put it. Gen. MacArthur stands outside the car with a muzzled canine on a leash, “the wolf of Wall Street.” MacArthur has his trademark aviators and corn cob pipe—and a not-so-trademark balloon animal on a string. Chunky, old-fashioned microphones from broadcast stations are clumped in the foreground. Cash, coins and a Mickey Mouse pocket watch fall from the sky, and a military drone flies by.

Somehow, this mashup—painted realistically in the kind of thick, oozy brushstrokes usually reserved for abstract expressionism—is nowhere near as heavyhanded as it might sound. It’s more like an easy combination of manic and precise.

Here’s how Depio decides on his subject matter: “I look at the news, and

these are things I remember in my head. I remember images more than I remember the information.”

“You negotiate with culture,” he said.

“You negotiate your knowledge with history. It changes. … You don’t inherit exactly what they put down there. You question it.”

Depio’s own perspective was largely informed by Marxist theory he studied as a philosophy minor in Manila. He’s also influenced by his position in the Las Vegas art scene—he has one foot in the world of self-taught artists and DIY galleries, and one foot in the academic and museum parts of the art world. He majored in business, not art, but in 2016 he was awarded what’s probably the highest honor given by the state, an Artist Fellowship grant.

One of his best examples of varying viewpoints on culture, though, comes from his own family. “The Elvis painting is the funniest to me,” he said. It carries not only all the cultural weight of Elvis himself—from trailblazer to subject of velvet kitsch paintings—but also an insider reference to a longstanding argument Depio and art critic Dave Hickey waged on social media. To Depio’s 16-year-old son, however, “The Elvis … means nothing.”

The teen read the painting as none of the above. Through his cultural lens, made in present-day Las Vegas, it’s a picture of an Elvis impersonator.

20th Century Women

Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup shine in Mike Mills’ ode to his unusual mother, who raised him in the late ’70s and tried to like punk music as much as she could. Bening is terrific as Dorothea, perhaps the best work of her career. She represents the late ’70s woman, still cool but perhaps slowing down a bit due to too many cigarettes and a general disillusionment with certain aspects of the changing culture. Mills uses Dorothea as a sort of narrator from the future who talks about the events of the film while observing from a perch in years ahead.

It’s an interesting technique, and Bening’s performance is a career milestone. Gerwig and Fanning are great as two different women who hang around Dorothea’s apartment, both with their own interesting subplots. Cruddup chimes in capably as a local handyman who will sleep with you if you ask him to. I love the way this film uses music on its soundtrack, from Talking Heads to the Buzzcocks.

The Comedian

Robert De Niro delivers a good performance in a film that doesn’t match his prowess from director Taylor Hackford.

De Niro plays Jackie Burke, an aging standup comedian dealing with a TV sitcom past he isn’t all too proud of. De Niro does a nice job playing a Don Rickles-type, old school standup. He’s not entirely hilarious, but he’s convincing in his standup sequences. He’s also good when Jackie is off stage being an ornery bastard. Where the film lets him down is in its handling of modern day things like viral videos and reality TV. Hackford’s take on modern media is woefully out of touch, and De Niro finds himself stranded in some rather ridiculous, tone deaf scenes.

Leslie Mann is her usual great self as a younger woman Jackie winds up trying to romance; the two actually make for a convincing almostbut-not-quite couple. Harvey Keitel is a little overbearing as Mann’s dad, but Danny DeVito scores as Jackie’s bemused brother. However, for everything that works in this movie, there are two things that don’t. There are lots of cameos from standups like Richard Belzer, Hannibal Buress, Brett Butler and Jimmie Walker. Yes … Jimmie Walker is still alive.

The Founder

Michael Keaton is flat-out great as Ray Kroc, the sorta-kinda founder of McDonald’s. Director John Lee Hancock’s film tells the story from when Kroc was selling milk shake mixers door-to-door up through his wife-stealing days as the head of the McDonald’s corporation. Hancock’s movie desperately wants you to like Kroc, but maybe we shouldn’t? After all, he swept in and took the name of McDonald’s from the McDonald brothers (Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch), effectively cutting them out of most profits and leaving them in his dust. The film is at its best when it is in old-time, Americana mode.

It’s a beautiful looking movie that captures the essence of those old timey fast food joints that replaced the traditional drive-in diners.

It slows down a bit and gets a little muddled when it tries to depict Kroc as some sort of commerce hero. I suppose if they went into details about how his co-creating McDonald’s has contributed to worldwide obesity and environmental concerns, McDonald’s themselves would’ve mounted up the lawyers and put the kibosh on the whole thing. Offerman is great as the well-meaning, high-standards McDonald brother who regrets the day he met Kroc.

Hidden Figures

Katherine Johnson was part of a segregated division at NASA in the ’50s, a wing of mathematicians who did the work that computers do today. Hidden Figures depicts the humiliation she and two other historical African-American figures, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, went through while solving equations that helped put men safely into space. The women had to put up with a lot of racist bullshit, and the film shows their hardships, albeit in PG fashion. Taraji P. Henson plays Johnson, the “smart one” astronaut John Glenn personally demanded check the co-

ordinates before his historical flight launched.

Octavia Spencer is her usual great self as Vaughan, doing the work of a supervisor without the title and curious about that new IBM thing they just installed down the hall. Vaughan would become crucial to the implementation of computers at NASA, as well as being the agency’s first African-American supervisor. As Jackson, NASA’s first female African-American aeronautical engineer, singer Janelle Monae is so good, it’s easy to forget that this is just her second movie role. As a composite, fictional character named Al Harrison, Kevin Costner does some of his best acting in years.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

This is an all new, original musical from director Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) that’s surprisingly low on melodrama while full of vibrancy, beautiful tunes, outstanding set pieces and a stunning sense of realism for a movie where the characters bust out singing. It’s the best original movie musical ever made. The story follows wannabe actress Mia (Emma Stone) and jazz composer Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) as they try to make it in crazy Los Angeles. They meet, they don’t like each other much at first, but then they fall in love, which provides Chazelle and his performers ample opportunities for musical numbers that surprise at every turn. This solidifies Gosling as one of the best actors of his generation. He can wow you with insightful indies and carry big-budget blockbusters. Now, with La La Land, he takes his game to a new level. He proves he can pretty much do anything when it comes to movie characters. He can sing and dance with the best of them. Stone doesn’t just make her mark with a beautiful voice and expert footwork—she embodies the character with the honest and almost tragic drive to “make it” in the business.

There was a quick little moment in the very first Star Wars (now known as Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope) where a character mentions rebels possibly obtaining vulnerability secrets regarding the Death Star. That group of people actually gets their own movie in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a Star Wars spinoff that’s technically another prequel. In fact, it tells a story that leads right up to where A New Hope begins. It’s also a little different from your typical Star Wars movie in that it doesn’t mainly deal with the Skywalker saga—although a couple of them make notable appearances—and doesn’t prominently feature the John Williams score (although that makes some appearances, as well). Director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) goes for something a little different here, a tonal shift that reminds of the big change The Empire Strikes Back brought to the saga. Felicity Jones is terrific as Jyn, a woman who finds herself with strange ties to the Death Star, and becomes part of the effort to destroy it.

Writer-director M. Night Shyamalan has finally made his first good movie since Signs (2002) with Split, a down-to-thebasics, creepy thriller propelled by excellent performances from James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch). The film reminds us that Shyamalan can be quite the capable director and writer when he isn’t getting too carried away. Taylor-Joy plays Casey, a high school outcast who attends a birthday party and soon thereafter finds herself and two classmates imprisoned by a strange man with multiple personalities (McAvoy). In addition to the angry man who kidnaps them, he’s also a stately, mannered woman, a 9-year-old child and, well, a few others. One of those other personalities plays a big part in taking the film into other realms beyond psychological thriller.

McAvoy goes nuts with the role, and Shyamalan takes things into supernatural territories in a chilling climax. Taylor-Joy is quickly becoming the new scream queen, McAvoy’s work will surely stand as one of the year’s most fun performances, and Shyamalan finds himself back from the dead. Stay for the credits, which include a nice cameo.

Time travelers Fossils When Travis Brockett moved to Reno, he turned to the internet to find other musicians with whom to play. Now—two years later—he laughs about what he calls the ridiculous post he placed on Craiglist, “seeking musical fusion.”

Ridiculous or not, Brockett’s wording paints a fairly accurate picture of the band that eventually came of it.

Fossils is the product of more than a year of experimentation by Brockett and fellow musicians Randy Linscheid, Nik Tillman and Amearist Phillips. During that time, the four bandmates jammed together off and on, trying out different sounds and switching between instruments to fill in the gaps.

It’s been a little more than two months now since the band settled into its current configuration—Brockett on lead guitar, Linscheid on rhythm guitar, Tillman on bass and Phillips on drums.

While Fossils’ lineup may be settled, the band’s sound remains in flux. It’s a chameleon mix of rock ’n’ roll subgenres—one for which Brockett provides an entertaining synopsis.

“You’re in a dive bar, and the jukebox is playing,” he said. “You’re walking through, and you think the Allman Brothers are on, but you’re not really sure. At one point the acid hits really hard, and it’s just an awesome, really intricate jam. And then somebody kicks the jukebox, and you think the White Stripes turned on for a little bit, but you’re not really sure. And then it all just kind of fades out into some Earth Wind & Fire jam.”

Sparks, on Jan. 13, the bandmates’ set demonstrated their varied musical influences. With Linscheid, Tillman and Brockett taking turns on lead vocals, the effect was something like rock ’n’ roll time travel. Linscheid’s soulful, clear voice flowed readily over ’90s-alternative-andfunk-inspired originals. Brockett’s vocals— at once sweet and rough—lent a folky vibe to harder, more contemporary rock covers.

And Tillman’s wailing style with its occasional edge of vibrato and vocal fry played particularly well with a punkish rendition of “Love Potion No. 9.”

The bandmates were without a soundman during much of their Elbow Room Bar performance but still managed to showcase their instrumental aptitudes (despite incessant—and unwarranted— complaining from the bartender and some of the seemingly more regular patrons about the volume of the music).

Phillips’ joyfully animated drumming conveyed the fluctuating heartbeat of the band’s set with a fluency acquired from his time at San Francisco’s Conservatory of Music. And Tillman added extra flavor by switching off between a standard, four-string and a custom, fretless fivestring bass. His occasional use of a whammy pedal tuned up several octaves served as effective punctuation to the band’s mix of styles.

With several shows under their belts, the bandmates are hoping to head into the studio to record some time in the near future. They’re not yet sure if they’ll produce a demo, an EP or a full-length album. But one thing they do know is that—at least at this point—they’ve got no intention of narrowing in on a single subgenre of rock.

“That’s pretty much why I love playing with these guys more than anybody— because it’s so diverse,” Phillips said. “It’s just so different.” Ω Fossils will play the Sparks Lounge Bar, 1237 Baring Blvd., Sparks, on Friday, Feb. 10 at 9 p.m.

Get off my yawn!

I’m a 61-year-old guy who’s been married four times. I love the security and acceptance of marriage, but after several years, either my wife du jour or I will get bored, and we’ll agree to move on. Clearly, I like being a husband, but I do a poor job of remaining one. Can I change that?

So, you just want the security of marriage with all the excitement of dating somebody new—which is kind of like wanting a latex hood and ball gag that are also a comfy old pair of slippers.

Although, no, you can’t have it all, you might manage to have a good bit of it all—the security and the excitement—by bringing in the neurochemistry of the chase when you’re in the cuddly-wuddly longterm attachment stage.

Social psychologist Arthur Aron and his colleagues did a brain imaging study of couples who were still passionately in love after being married for 10 to 29 years. Surprisingly, the results looked a lot like their previous results on couples who’d just fallen madly in love, with intense activity in regions of the brain “associated with reward and motivation.”

The neurotransmitter dopamine is a central player in this reward circuitry. Though dopamine is still widely known by its outdated nickname, the “pleasure chemical,” current research by neuroscientist Kent Berridge suggests that it doesn’t actually give you a buzz (as opioids in the brain do). It instead motivates you to do things that might—like eating cake, smoking a doob and making moves on that girl with the hypno-hooters.

Dopamine-secreting neurons are especially on the alert for what researchers call “novel rewards”— any yummy, sexy, feel-good stuff you haven’t tried before. Neuroscientist Wolfram Schultz finds that “unpredictable rewards” may be even three or four times as exciting to us as those we’re used to.

Aron and his colleagues note that “if partners experience excitement” from, say, “novel and challenging activities” that they do together, “this shared experience can reignite relationship passion by associating the excitement with the relationship.”

Obviously, these should be unanticipated good experiences—like alternating who plans date night

and surprising each other with the week’s event.

You might also try to delight your spouse with small unexpected gestures every day. Ultimately, you should find bringing in surprise much more fun than simply hoping the relationship won’t die.

It’s nice to hope for the best about people—but still put a note, “tofu-kelp casserole,” on that foilwrapped plate of brownies you stuck in the break room refrigerator.

However, especially when our ego is involved, we’re prone to believe the best about people, because of what psychologists call “optimism bias.”

This is a form of selecto-vision that leads us to overestimate that things will turn out wonderfully for us and underestimate the likelihood of our experiencing bad stuff, like being in a flaming car wreck or a flaming car wreck of a relationship. In short, we believe that bad things happen to other people.

For example, that cheater we’re in love with is only cheating because the other dude’s such a fuckbuckle, not because she has the ethics of a dust mite.

Because optimism bias is ego-protecting, understanding that we’re susceptible to it typically isn’t enough to dig ourselves out. What might help you, however, is telling yourself your story, but about some other girl and guy. Then advise that guy on his prospects. For example: Yes, here’s a woman you can trust completely to be faithful—whenever she’s trapped, totally alone, 2,300 feet below ground in a Chilean coal mine.

Tell me a bit about the Writer’s Wednesday series.

The Writers Wednesday lecture series is to highlight the writers that specifically focus on Nevada or the Great Basin or the West in general. The main reason why we do this is because we have so many writers that come in here, into our library and use our resources.

And so we’re really familiar with local authors, regional authors and even national authors. … We’ve had events … where we have had book signings, but I thought it would be a really great way to highlight the authors—have question-and-answers with the audience as well as book signings and just be very specific to [one author] instead of having, you know, a group of authors here. It started in November. And we’re having really great luck with people who are coming. We’re getting requests from people who are interested in participating [as authors]. And … it’s from a

variety of people. We most recently had David Lowndes who wrote a book called Reno’s Heyday. … It was really great because, you know, he spent a lot of time really identifying photographs and telling people a lot about the photographs of Reno. And you get a lot of history that way. So, for his lecture, he talked a lot about his book, but he also really talked about the process of how he was able to identify the photographs and how he could tell the era and the buildings he used as markers for time frames and things like that. So it’s a great way for people to learn how to also identify their photographs.

How many lectures have there been so far?

We’ve only done three, and the next one is the eighth of February, and it’s going to be Guy Clifton, who you

probably know, who ... was a journalist with the RGJ. … And, actually, it’s not falling on Wednesday for April, because it’s the author Lynn Downey, and she was the archivist for Levi Strauss & Company. And I think it’s really great that we’re going to have her speak [on April 26]. … After that it’s Karl Breckenridge, who is another journalist, on May 10.

And then Peter Meyers on June 14. … We have them at 5:30—so book signing between 5 and 5:30—as a way to allow people who work to come to some of our events. A lot of our events are during the day. … We have a lot of events on Saturday. But we wanted to … hopefully attract a different audience who can’t get here to our lectures at noon.

The Twitler watch Well! It took all of a week—one zany week liberally sprinkled with faux facts, fuckups and farcicles—for President Twitler and his crack team of knuckleheaded newbies to firmly establish that they indeed don’t have the eentsiest teentsiest clue as to what the fuck they’re doing.

While everybody is wrangling today with the considerable fallout from Twitler’s pissy little Arab travel ban, I wanna go way, way back to Saturday the 21st, when Trump wasted no time whatsoever in showing off some 5-star cluelessness. This happened in front of the CIA’s Wall of the Fallen, adorned by 117 stars, one for each life given by agents in the line of duty. It was the third appearance ever by a sitting president at this hallowed spot, and whereas both Dubya (speaking there after Sept.

11) and Obama (speaking after the successful hit on Bin Laden) were

measured and respectful in their solemn remarks, Twitler wasted no time in offending the daylights out of every intelligence employee in earshot as he broke into his narcissist rap, talking about, among other things, how many times he’s been on the cover of Time and other galling egomaniacal trifles. To say the veteran agents in attendance were unimpressed is to greatly understate the case.

One observer said Twitler’s routine was about as appropriate as a president doing standup schtick at Arlington National Cemetery.

Newsweek’s Kurt Eichenwald said he actually didn’t blame Trump for this gaffe, but instead pointed his finger at the president’s staff, pointing out that if these reckless rookies had had the slightest clue as to what the hell was going on and where Trump was speaking, they would have briefed him accordingly as to the proper tone.

But they didn’t, because they didn’t know shit, because they’re frightfully ignorant amateurs. They just showed up and applauded for The Boss like good minions, and presto!

In less than 24 hours, Team Twitler had recorded its first lameass misstep.

By the way, do you know how many Americans have been killed by terrorists from the seven countries singled out by Team Trump for the Muslim travel ban? ZERO. That shooting at Fort Hood (2009) was carried out by Nidal Hasan, born in the United States to Palestinian parents. The Bomb Brothers in Boston (2013) were both Russians.

The male San Bernadino shooter (2015) was an American citizen, his wife a Pakistani raised in Saudi Arabia. The Orlando madman (2016) was U.S., born here to Afghan parents. Twitler’s order makes us safer in the same way that bacon makes you smarter. Ω
