elcome to the 30th annual Hometowne Christmas parade. This is a wondrous time to be a part of the City of Sparks. I’m proud of the work we do in our city and a cornerstone is about giving back – we take the time to see that our neighbors are fed, clothed and warm. This is why this year’s parade theme, “A Season of Giving,” resonates with me and the families of Sparks.

Our Grand Marshal, Cherie Jamason, Executive Director of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada leads the way in demonstrating charity and generosity. We celebrate her work in ending hunger in our community.

Please take some time this year to remember those in our community whose Christmas might not be a joyous as yours.

There are many ways to give back. From volunteering at the food bank sorting cans to shoveling your elderly neighbor’s walkway. It all leads to a Sparks that we can all be proud of.

Happy Holidays from the Veterans Guest House!

The Veterans Guest House provides temporary housing to U.S. military veterans and their families who are receiving medical treatment in the Reno/Sparks area. Today, the Guest House has 17 beds in two homes and will provide 5,300 guest nights of lodging in 2016. The total nights of lodging provided since 2005 is over 55,000. With the community’s support we will start construction of an expansion to 33 beds in spring 2017.

WE SERVE THOSE WHO SERVE Guests that stay with us can be receiving treatment from any doctor or any medical facility in the Reno/Sparks area. Typically, they live at least 30 miles away from Reno. Our guests fall into three main categories: 1. Veterans receiving outpatient care e.g., a doctor’s appointment, weeks of cancer treatmeant, or monthly PTSD group sessions.

2. The families of veterans who are hospitalized or in long term care facilities.

3. A veteran’s immediate family member who is receiving medical treatment as an inpatient or outpatient. Anyone who has served knows that the family serves too.

more than 900 abused and neglected children live in foster care in washoe county because they cannot live safely at home. after these children are placed into temporary foster care, they are often removed from everything familiar, while entering into a world filled with social workers, lawyers and judges making life-changing decisions on their behalf. as a casa volunteer, you would serve in a unique position as an advocate for an abused or neglected child. You will give that child a voice, and a chance for a better life.

The For Kids Foundation is a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides funding for the unmet needs of Northern Nevada children. we provide assistance for anything a child needs when other resources are insufficient or nonexistent. when emergency psychiatric medications were needed for a 13-year old boy, For Kids was there. when the money saved for tuition at TMCC was rerouted to a sibling’s cancer treatment, For Kids stepped in to help. when a two-year old with heart problems needed a portable defibrillator, For Kids purchased it. whether the need is as large as major surgery, or as simple as an extra pair of glasses, For Kids Foundation is there to help the children of Northern Nevada. won’t you please help us to help them?

is a wildlife sanctuary and education center. the mission of animal ark is to inspire environmental stewardship through wildlife education.
