Well, shit. Holy shit. Sweet merciful crap. I didn’t think this was possible. I didn’t think that enough U.S. citizens were gullible, ignorant and hateful enough to elect this shady con artist to the presidency.

All year, I obsessively checked the polls and read the analysts. This fascist victory seemed impossibile. I told my friends, family and coworkers not to worry. Now, I’m the sucker—a sucker who believed the numbers instead of recognizing the hate in Americans’ hearts. That’s the only explanation for why the numbers were so off. The surveys and exit polls had Clinton well ahead— but some people were either hiding the racism that allowed them to vote for a xenophobic bigot or concealing the sexism that prevented them from voting for the most qualified candidate.

Part of me that just wanted to write the word “fuck” over and over 400 times in this column. This election result had reduced me to a simpering, braindead ball of fetal anxiety, curled up under the covers with a pint of ice cream.

But screw that. Instead, I searched for a silver lining. The good news is that Nevada and Washoe County both voted for the more progressive presidential candidate.

And we elected Catherine Cortez Masto to the U.S. Senate, and many qualified candidates to state and local offices. And Nevadans and Californians voted for recreational marijuana, which, as many of my stoner friends have pointed out, we might need to get through the next few years. Of course, with that demagogue in the White House, there’s a strong possibility of the rekindling of a totalitarian federal War on Drugs. And that’s just one of the many wars to come.

This fearmonger has already launched his wars on women, Muslims, Latinos, African Americans, Europeans, Jews, the LGBTIA+, the disabled, environmentalists, journalists, academics, artists and many others. And he won a major battle yesterday. But it’s time to dust ourselves off, revive punk rock, start serious investigations, write, rally, sing and protest. Time to fight.

HOA, HOA, HOA Re “Western hospitality” (letters, Oct. 27): This is in response to Gemini Devi’s letter regarding, in part, homeowner associations (HOAs).

First, welcome to your newly adopted state.

Second, I respectfully suggest that had you requested, or known to request, and read a copy of your HOA bylaws (your realtor could have provided you a copy), you may have understood any and all boundaries imposed by the HOA. It is my understanding that few, if any, HOAs allow anyone to “leave cart parts and engines laying around everywhere.”

Last, an HOA works (volunteers) to keep the residential community presentable to all.

I regret the discrimination Gemini Devi receives, but I believe that is a separate, albeit sad and unfortunate, issue likely not HOA-related.

Or the candidates weaker Re “Take it home” (endorsements, Nov. 3): I am an independent who has generally enjoyed your publication and was looking forward to checking out your political endorsements and then the endorsement issue came out.

How sad. You could have just said “Vote Democrat” as every single endorsement you made, where a political affiliation is listed, was Democrat. Guess the “Media Liberal Bias” is stronger than I had realized.

it illegal and downright uncomfortable for the South to do their own lynching, most of these folks are quite happy, or at least acquiescent, to have our officers in blue thin out the herd on their behalf. No muss, no fuss, no rope burns.

God’ll sort ’em out. Trust me, no tears have been shed over the killing of Eric, or Freddy or stupid little 12-year-olds with BB guns.

Until the asshole cop-murderer in Dallas assassinated our men in blue (and really, “blue lives matter”? What the fuck is a “blue life”?), the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement had focus and empathy nationwide.

After the Dallas tragedy, the world’s richest junkie on the radio, Rush Somebody pronounced the BLM people “terrorists.”

And off goes Amurica. Now we’re supposed to hate those that hate the killing of unarmed citizens?

My point is that there are many millions of abject racists in this country. I doubt they are in a basket, but they are definitely closeted.

By sheer force of numbers, we need to out the bigots into the public opinion stockades and make racism as taboo as cannibalism.

Find a bigot, slap a bigot—unless they are armed, then laugh at them for being the absurd assholes they are.

Evolution A few years ago, a Reno reporter pitched a story to his desk on the way heavy security at the Washoe County Courthouse was discouraging tourists who wanted to see the courtrooms where movie stars once got their divorces.

The security had been thrown around the entire courthouse though nearly all courthouse violence happens in family court, and the reporter wanted to do a story on why the gear like metal detectors was not used only where the violence happened.

One of the 20-something newsroom producers asked, “Why would anyone object to metal detectors?” She had grown up seeing that kind of security and so had no memory of a more casual, less restrictive society.

We often encounter the way we have adapted ourselves to the way things are and don’t question whether they necessarily have to be that way.

Elsewhere in this edition, in our dining guide, Anna Hart wrote about Reno Initiative for Shelter and Equality, a program to feed homeless people here in the valley. She wrote, “There are a number of organizations that are hot meal providers, from grassroots organizations like We Care Volunteers and LoKa Cares, to programs run by local church groups like St. Vincent’s Food Pantry and Reno Sparks Gospel Mission. Each of these groups do their part to ensure that dozens, if not hundreds of people will have the chance to eat at least one warm, quality meal every day.

RISE is another one of these organizations.”

There are so many such programs now that eventually the Food Bank was created to gather food for many of them so they did not all have to do that work separately.

For those whose experiences in Reno are post-1980, it may be a surprise that this network of assistance is relatively new. For 40 years, there was no large homeless class in the United States. From World War II until the 1980s, all needy in the Truckee Meadows—disabled, blind, whoever—were served by the Salvation Army, wth a small dozen-beds shelter, that later was supplemented by St. Vincent’s Dining Room. So what happened?

Ronald Reagan was elected president. Elections have consequences. With new Republican majorities and Blue Dog Democrats, large parts of the social safety net that had provided services through seven presidencies of both parties were dismantled. Programs were cut, taxes reduced, training eliminated, catsup was designated a vegetable for purposes of compliance with federal guidelines. Gradually people ended up on the street. The population of those who slept in doorways or on heating grates grew. People with college degrees who never expected to have economic problems ended up getting work at casual labor offices.

Private organizations were created to deal with this new homeless population. Reno began a quarter-century-long effort to find a location for one central homeless shelter.

The same thing happened in communities across the nation.

Thank goodness private groups like those in Reno took up the slack, though some of them have come and gone.

We are recalling this in order to tell those who did not experience it that it doesn’t have to be this way. At some point as a society we decided we were going to leave these things up to fate and private groups. Whether we agree with the Reagan change or not, it is of our own making. Ω

At the end As Joe Biden’s booming voice filled the Wooster High School gym, you could feel the emotions of the crowd rise in response.

He spoke of Nevadans who lost their jobs and their homes during the recession and the callousness of the Republican presidential candidate who called it “good for business.” Biden’s comforting tone increased in volume, surrounding the crowd with empathy as he shouted, “It’s about dignity and respect. It’s about being able to hold your head up.” It was classic Joe Biden preaching to the church of working class voters.

I first met Biden in 2007 when all the Democratic candidates for President were suddenly interested in Nevada due to our newly-minted early state status in the 2008 election. They were searching for support in the Nevada caucus, and state legislators were prime targets to build their networks. Even though the attention was novel, we soon grew weary of the requests for meetings in the midst of a busy legislative session.

When Biden arrived and the call went out to assemble in the caucus room to hear his pitch, I almost skipped it as about half the Democrats did. I thought I’d swing in for 10 minutes, meet the senator, and then escape through a side door to more productive activity. But then I discovered how engaging and irresistible a man our vice president can be. Just like Gov. Kenny Guinn, he had a tendency to grab your forearm as he was talking, and you weren’t going anywhere until he was done. He hasn’t changed his style a bit.

Meeting nationally prominent candidates is now a routine experience for many Nevadans on both sides of the aisle. This year, the day after Biden’s visit on Nevada Day weekend to bolster the campaigns of Clinton and Masto, Donald Trump appeared in Las Vegas to rally his own supporters. Then Clinton came back to Las Vegas. Then her husband did.

Nevada’s purple swing-state status has attracted multiple visits from Clinton, Trump and their vice presidential running

mates, along with President Obama and Biden. Other high-profile surrogate visits in the last month have featured many a U.S. senator, such as Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Lindsey Graham, Jeff Sessions, Jeff Merkley and Ted Cruz, who trekked all the way to Elko for the Trump-Heck ticket. House Speaker Paul Ryan stumped for his congressional candidates in Southern Nevada, and many other members of Congress visited Nevada as well.

Although we grouse about the traffic delays caused by Secret Service motorcades and the way surrogates and candidates from the East pronounce Nevada, it’s flattering and satisfying to receive attention once reserved for more populous and influential states.

Instead of ignoring us and focusing on the wealth and huge media markets of California, the candidates speak directly to Nevadans packed into local gyms and hotels. It’s incredibly easy for the average Nevadan to interact with our

national leaders, and one hopes they remember more about our state than how to pronounce it correctly when they return to Washington.

Nevada and the nation can take a deep breath of relief today, knowing it’s over for another four years. No more incessant mind-numbing emails forecasting doom if a political contribution isn’t made before midnight. No more truth-stretching TV commercials with ominous lighting warning of disaster should a certain candidate be elected. No more earnest door knockers. And, within a few days, no more campaign signs.

As Senator Harry Reid retires, he leaves a long legacy of success in many complex areas of public policy affecting Nevada. The impact of elevating Nevada’s profile in the electoral process may be difficult to quantify, but it’s clear our needs are no longer hidden in the desert of flyover country.

Competing protests On Oct. 27 the brothers Bundy—Ammon and Ryan—and five co-defendants were acquitted in Oregon federal court of all charges stemming from their protest occupation of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge.

In what appears to be jury nullification, the jurors felt the federal government had simply not proven their charges of conspiracy to intimidate federal workers to prevent them from performing their duties with weapons brought onto federal property. The Bundy party did occupy the refuge, and they did have weapons. The reason the jury acquitted was the arrogance of the federal government in overcharging them. If the government had presented the jury with a simple trespass charge, punishable by up to a year in prison, the jury probably would have convicted.

The federal prosecutors stated during trial that the Bundys had a perfect right to protest federal policies, but then labeled that protest a criminal

conspiracy. The reason, jurors felt, was to increase the penalty for convictions from a misdemeanor trespass of up to a year in prison to a felony conspiracy carrying up to six years. That, the jury—to their credit—would not go along with.

It was a stunning defeat for the feds, who rarely lose a high-profile trial in federal court, and can usually pin a conspiracy charge on Mother Teresa and the Pope and win.

During this illegal commandeering of a Keurig coffee machine in the maintenance shack on the wildlife preserve, the Bundys invited other ranchers to join.

At the trial, it was revealed that at least 15 of those who came to “help” were federal informants.

For the crime of protesting while armed, 54-year-old Arizona rancher La Voy Finicum was shot dead on a snowy Oregon roadside. The protesters regularly left the wildlife refuge to talk to the locals to discuss their cause. On

Jan. 26, 2016 Oregon State Police and the FBI broke an informal agreement with Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer and decided to stop and arrest them.

Separate videos confirm Finicum’s vehicle, which also contained Ryan Bundy and two female supporters, was forced off the road.

Finicum was upset and shouted he was leaving the vehicle, was going to see the sheriff, and if they wanted to shoot him they could just go ahead. He stepped out of the vehicle and was soon killed by police gunfire. The police said he reached for a gun, and the videos show he reached for something, but after he was shot. A terrified Ryan and the two women somehow survived by lying flat on the back seat floor of the SUV as more shots were fired at their vehicle.

Next, the Bundys face charges in Nevada relating to the original standoff over the BLM’s attempt to seize their cattle for unpaid grazing fees. There was an argument in court over whether those

acquitted should be allowed to return home, and a Bundy defense attorney was tasered. A perfect right to protest, indeed!

Meanwhile, in Cannonball, North Dakota, the Lakota Standing Rock Tribe is protesting an oil pipeline through land claimed by treaty. If only the left and right local rural power protesters could become allies! Most of the animus comes from the progressives who dislike the Bundys and the Western public lands movement. Constitutional conservatives want energy development but generally support the Native Americans in their disputes over federal encroachment.

Getting the two sides together to focus on their common causes is like getting Donald Trump to stay focused on the issues instead of personal slights. The enemy of my enemy should be my friend. Ω

Marjorie Sill 1923-2016 “It’s a work of joy,” said Marjorie Sill of Reno. “There’s so much negative going on in the world right now. I love the positive.”

It was 2014, and Sill was talking about wilderness areas in the state. But she might well have been talking about a myriad of other things. She loved the upbeat, once writing this newspaper to thank us for the Aug. 5, 2010 edition: “Thank you for including several positive articles. … So much of the news now is so negative and discouraging that one almost hates to read a paper or watch a news broadcast.”

A resident of Nevada for more than half a century, Sill worked against coal-fired power plants and military land withdrawals. She and her scientist husband, Richard, worked on preservation of Pyramid Lake and Lake Tahoe. As a wilderness advocate, she watched Nevada’s wilderness areas go from 700,000 acres to more than two million.

“We in Nevada are fortunate to have so much public land that is open to everyone,” she wrote earlier this year in the Reno GazetteJournal. “Some of this land is in special categories—national parks, national monuments, national wildlife refuges, designated wilderness— siLL but most of it is just for people who want to visit and enjoy our beautiful far-flung lands in whatever way they choose.”

Her life will be marked by a gathering at 1 p.m. on Dec. 2 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

Second thoughtS Some of our readers were shocked when we published a cover story in which University of Nevada, Reno journalism professor emeritus Jake Highton made the case for Donald Trump’s candidacy (“The Trump card,” RN&R, June 30).

Highton wrote that Hillary Clinton was “beholden to corporate power” and “an unabashed hawk” while Trump wanted to stop corporations who get away with “tax murder” and would reduce U.S. military commitments.

But as the campaign unfolded, Highton found that in the end he could not do it. After more and more reports piled up on Trump’s record, Highton wrote in his Sparks Tribune column this week that “contrary to my earlier advice in print, I can’t vote for Trump with a clear conscience. Trump has alienated far too many people and whole organizations. The last straw was criticizing women and groping them. I have long been pro-feminist, an ardent proponent of women’s rights.

I supported the Equal Rights Amendment that was never ratified. So how will I vote for president today? ‘None of these candidates,’ an option we are fortunate to have in Nevada.”

Incidentally, we also offered to publish a piece by a Republican who supported Clinton, but none ever came forward.

Feet on the ground Ambivalence is the Democrats’ word of the week nevada democrats and liberals won sweeping victories in the 2016 election, but their pleasure at the wins was sharply reduced by the election of Donald Trump as president.

It is the first time since 1976 that Nevada went against the national presidential result.

Nevada voters gave Democrats easy wins for a U.S. Senate seat, three of four U.S. House seats, the Nevada Assembly majority, and eight of 11 Nevada Senate seats up for election.

At press time, a ballot measure providing for background checks in some gun purchases was leading, though more than 500 precincts—many of them in the small counties—out of 1,883 were still unreported. Measures dealing with public utilities and taxation of medical devices held commanding leads. A measure to regulate legal marijuana which drew opposition from nearly everyone with an official title in the state and attracted $2 million in

opposition from billionaire Sheldon Adelson nevertheless prevailed with ease. Washoe sales tax and Clark gas tax increases passed with comfortable margins.

In a closely watched and bitter Reno City Council race, incumbent Jenny Brekhus led her opponent by a comfortable six percent, overcoming opposition from developers and fellow city councilmembers.

In one Washoe County Assembly race, former Democratic assemblymember Richard “Skip” Daly appeared to have reclaimed his seat from Republican incumbent Jill Dickman by three votes out of 31,355, or 0.009 percent of the total, possibly teeing up a recount.

The resurgence of Democrats in the Nevada Legislature portends trouble for initiatives pursued by Republicans, who scored historic gains in the 2014 election. At the time, when the GOP at the 2015 legislative session enacted

some of its base’s favored programs such as school grants to parents who took their children out of public school, Democrats said they would reverse or repeal those initiatives when they returned to power. They will likely be closely watched now to see if they follow through.

Clinton’s win by about two percent of the vote followed opinion surveys showing her and Trump nearly tied in the Silver State. Her ground game—getting out the vote— worked at top efficiency as volunteers walked door to door in droves. “I’ve had another Clinton worker in my apartment complex every day for a week,” said a Reno college instructor.

Trump had little ground game, relying mostly on paid media, an innovation which Nevada political analyst Fred Lokken said could change the way U.S. politics is run.

In Las Vegas, the Nevada AFL-CIO said “union volunteers and staff were knocking at a rate of nearly 15,000 doors per day” for a total of half a million households.

In Reno, a coalition of several groups said they had knocked “on more than 29,000 doors in Washoe County this election cycle.”

The Culinary Union said nationally, its “members knocked on over 338,000 doors and talked to over 74,000 voters.

The North American hospitality workers union sent nearly 400 members from 25 union locals in 17 states to battleground states.” In Nevada, the number of households contacted by Culinary precinct workers was not known but 300 members walked precincts in Reno and Las Vegas over the past 10 weeks.

A Politico survey found 17 percent of voters had been contacted by the Clinton campaign, only eight percent by the Trumpets.

With 91 percent of normally Republican Washoe County’s votes counted, Clinton led by 1.2 percent.

She led by more than 10 percent in Clark County, which contains most of the state population.

One action by the Trump campaign against Las Vegas Latino precincts drew wide attention. A lawsuit filed in a Nevada district court asked for records from four early voting sites that reportedly stayed open the evening of Nov. 4 to allow everyone to vote be

impounded and preserved. Trump also asked for the names of polling place workers.

Judge Gloria Sturman, who seemed incredulous that someone would sue over people being able to vote, gave Trump’s lawyers a lecture on privacy. “Do you watch Twitter?” Sturman asked as viewers across the nation watched the hearing. “There are internet trolls who could get this information and harass people who just want to help their fellow citizens vote.

Why would I order them to make available to you information about people who work at polls when it’s not already a public requirement to do so, so that those people can be harassed for doing their civic duty?”

The dispute gave headline writers a field day. Wired, the technology magazine, posted a story headlined “Let’s Cheer This Badass Nevada Judge Who Understands Twitter Harassment.” The Washington Post story ran under the headline “The Trump campaign just basically got laughed out of a Nevada courtroom.” In the Times of Israel it was, “Trump lodges unsuccessful bid to throw out Nevada votes.”

Trump made vague claims about rigged voting machines across the country but did not provide substantiation. “It’s happening at

various places today. It has been reported,” he said. “In other words, the machines you put down a Republican, and it registers as a Democrat. They’ve had a lot of complaints about that today.” He did not identify the “various places,” and he did not name those he was referring to when he said “they’ve.”

He did not say where “it has been reported.”

In Florida—where Trump and Clinton were tied 48.5 to 48.5 percent at about 9:15 Florida time, raising for a time the possibility of another recount—Marco Rubio won back his U.S. Senate seat against U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy. Murphy won the Democratic nomination after Nevada’s Harry Reid intervened in the primary campaign to attack combative U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson and help Murphy. After Rubio beat Murphy, Grayson tweeted, “Rubio reelected.

Told you so, @SenatorReid.”

Accompanying that message was an animation of Homer Simpson burning a bridge.

Reid, who is retiring from public office after a public career lasting half a century that carried him from hospital trustee through state legislator and lieutenant governor to the U.S. House and U.S. Senate, watched as voters this year gave his party gains in the Senate but not a majority. Ω

What’s transpiring?

Wondering what’s going on with the seemingly sudden surge of transgender teens?

he last couple of years have been big for transgender visibility. In 2015, Bruce Jenner became Caitlin.

In June, Jamie Shupe of Oregon became the first person in the U.S. to be legally declared “non-binary,” officially not a member of either sex. In October, 17-year-old James Charles, already Instagram and YouTube famous for his assertively creative makeup artistry, became CoverGirl’s first-ever male spokesmodel. (“Just a little DIY side note,” he says in a video as he draws constellations on a purple-sky background painted around his eyes, “If you have a pimple, turn it into a star. Oh my god! Wow! Problem solved.”)

A New York Times analysis reported that about 1.4 million American adults identify as transgender.

That’s about 0.6 percent of the population, double the number, 0.3, compiled by the Williams Institute at University of California, Los Angeles in 2011.

As for transgender teens, there appears to be no official count—but here’s what I’ve seen in Reno lately. In May, the Washoe County School District became one of the first in the nation to allow students to use the restrooms that correspond with their chosen gender identities and to call students by their chosen names. Teens I know started changing the pronouns on their social media profiles from “he” or “she” to “they”—a choice that hasn’t yet caught on widely among non-teens, but has gained official approval by the American Dialect Society, which in 2015 deemed “they” acceptable as a gender-neutral, singular pronoun, and by the Washington Post, which adopted singular “they” in its style guide.

Also, among the families that stream through the veritable revolving door that is my kitchen, a teen has occasionally asked to be called by a new name that

signifies a new gender identity. Parents have occasionally wondered out loud at my dinner table, “What’s happening here? Is this a phase? Just a trend?”

All of this has left me with two questions: Is this “new” gender fluidity among teens actually new? And what do trans teens themselves have to say?

History repeats itself Jeff Auer is the director of the Nevada LGBT Archives.

He’s also a doctoral student in history at the University of Nevada, Reno and an adjunct faculty member at both Truckee Meadows Community College and UNR. I asked him whether any societies, past or present, had conceived of gender categories in ways other than the binary designations “male” and “female.”

“There’s a long history of it here in America,” he said.

“There’s examples all over the world, thousands of years of indigenous cultures.”

Expressions of alternative gender identities throughout history have been met with various reactions from mainstream society.

Molly-houses, for example—secret societies of men in 18th-century England who would dress up as women and, in some cases, engage in mock birth rituals—did not go over so well.

“It turned into a scandal in British society,” Auer said.

“Apparently they were quite common, which sort of horrified people.”

On the other hand, there have been examples of transgender identities being widely accepted, or even revered, in traditional Native American cultures, for example.

“They had a completely different idea of gender,” Auer said.

A blog post by LGBT scholar Will Roscoe, who lives in Seattle, explains the concept of Native American “two-spirits.” They were “male, female and sometimes intersexed individuals who combined activities of both men and women with traits unique to their status as two spirits. In most tribes, they were considered neither men nor women; they occupied a distinct, alternative gender status.”

The two-spirits concept “was found in almost every Native American tribe in the United States,” Auer said.

“I think you always should look to American popular culture for clues to what people are thinking is acceptable at the time,” he said. He traced a recent lineage of gender fluidity, as reflected in the glitter glam rock periods and bands such as the New York Dolls in the ’70s and Blur in the early ’90s.

Other prime examples include the 1975 musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show. “It inspired a huge culture that basically lasts to this day,” Auer said—and television shows such as Transparent, in which Jeffrey Tambor plays a father who comes out as transgender once his children are grown, and Orange is the New Black, where transgendered actor Laverne Cox plays a transgendered character.

“I think that emboldens youth who are immersed in the culture into accepting it and feeling comfortable enough to come out,” Auer said. “There’s a long history of this, especially in terms of adults. There’s more acceptance among younger teenage children today about gender.”

Straight from the SourceS I asked a few Reno teens who’ve re-thought their gender identities to share their own perspectives on how they define themselves—and what they’d like adults to know. All of their names have been changed.

I started off as “female to male,” then I didn’t want to put a label on it. I’m just male— period. Some people point out how low my voice is, the way I act more masculine.

Growing up, I had more guy friends than female fiends. I never played around with Barbies. I played more with Bionicles. I was into superheroes. I never wanted to dress like a girl. I wanted to wear stuff that was black. I never wanted my hair in pigtails or braids or anything. When I was 12, I never wanted to shave my legs.

When I was 14, I started realizing I’d rather be called handsome than beautiful. I started off as gender-fluid. Some days I’m more masculine— some days I’m more feminine.

Some people were more comfortable saying, “Hey Trinity” or “Hey Tyler.” “Tyler” just had a nice ring. I hated “Trinity.” It just wasn’t who I was.

I’d say the pronouns were extremely hard for people to catch onto. Acceptance from my family is extremely insane. My dad is like, “I’ll never call you Tyler.” He’s like, “You were born as our little girl.”

It was natural for me. It wasn’t hard to introduce myself as Tyler.

When I made the change, I never slipped up calling myself Trinity. I feel like I’m just trapped in a body where I don’t want to be.

I found a teacher who was accepting. My counselor changed my name in the system. My guidance counselor is awesome about it. He’s so cool about it. Totally for it, doesn’t have any questions about it. He said he’d be sure to email all my teachers. My mom is very supportive too.

I run a group for LGBT teens that have problems with self-harming or mental illness and stuff. I’m an intern for a therapist. That’s what I want to do when I grow up.

I play basketball, baseball and stuff. But not volleyball. Running around in spandex and booty shorts, that’s not my thing.

People will question me and be like, “What are you doing in the girls’ locker room?” I’ve had a gym teacher tell me it’s a disgrace for me to be in the girls’ locker room. Even though I identify as a male, I still have female parts, so I have to use the girls’ locker room. I’ll get weird looks going into the women’s restroom.

I think that people don’t have a lot of respect for [pronouns]. I’ll meet new people, and before we get the chance to introduce our names, my friend will introduce me as “she” on accident. Other people are like, “I don’t care if you identify as a male. You’re a she.” The way I see it is like, if I want to be called this, if I work so hard, it took me a long time to come out, and it’s who I am. I think the only people who understand are people who’ve come out or are trans themselves. We didn’t ask to get the body that we have. If I had a choice I’d be in a male body right now, but unfortunately that’s not the way it works.

Emotional stability with this stuff is crazy. I’ve had a lot of times where I’m like, “I might as well just go back to ‘Trinity’ and be unhappy with myself.”

[People] need to understand that we feel this way because we are this way. Even if it is “just a phase,” that’s who we are at that moment in time.

I would describe my gender as “gender fluid.” Sometimes I’m more masculine and sometimes I’m more feminine. It depends on the day. Today I felt more masculine, so I presented myself in a more manly way. Sometimes I want to look up and do my makeup—and I don’t really like makeup some days.

On days when I’m more masculine, I hang out with smokers. When I’m more feminine I’m more up in everybody’s business. I connect with girls better than guys. Even on my more masculine days, I hang out with mostly girls.

It took me a long time of bouncing back and forth. I thought I wanted to be female. I presented myself more female for a while. [Then] I was like, “I just want to follow whatever feels right that day.”

I’m lucky to have a big family. Every Thursday night we have a big family dinner. There’s 42 of us. My family’s very supportive of everything. Having that many people support me, that’s awesome. I go to a school that’s very supporting. I don’t really have very many toxic experiences.

I’m a YouTuber, and I blog about my life, so I constantly have a camera and am filming whatever I’m doing, whatever’s going on. I have 70 subscribers. On Instagram, I have 3,500 followers. I talk about video games. Video games are my life. I play the game and talk about whatever’s going on in my life, just whatever. Sometimes I yell at the game.

The pronouns were a big issue for me. I thought I had to be called “male” or “female.”

15 Now I don’t care if you call me “miss,” “mister.” Sometimes if I’m walking down the road I get “mister.” Sometimes I get “miss.” I just love that anybody’s trying to talk to me and communicate with me.

I think that [the teen years are] a time of experiment. It’s a time when people figure out what their path in life is. People need to understand that not everyone else is going down the same road they are. … The teenage years are just a time to experiment and figure out who you are as a person, who you want to be in your adult life.

In my case, I haven’t had a lot of external disturbance—I have had a lot of internal conflict. That has caused depression and anxiety, and I’m always afraid I might be letting somebody down. I feel like that happens to everybody to some extent, but I think that gender has made it even more so.

The difficulty is the people who love you, parents and everything. It’s hard for them to understand because they don’t go through it.

I guess, the easy way to say [how I identify] is “more masculine than I actually am.” I identify as male.

The way I dress points that out, my hair and the way I want to look every day. It’s also the way I talk and present myself. I’m just trying to get the idea across to people that I am what I am, like it or not.

It was when one of my exes that, like, I guess, introduced me to [the idea of becoming male].

Truthfully, deep down, when I look at it, throughout my life, I’ve been more guy-ish, but I tried to make it up with dresses, and I tried so hard, then when an ex of mine showed me who this group was, I was like, “It’s OK.” I was 12 when that happened. Now I’m 15.

The easy part is the people who accept you more. [One hard part is that] a lot of people say, “That’ll change when you get older.” That’s for older me to decide.

There is one more good thing—the real use of the inner you. It just feels great. It feels amazing.

More of the difficulty is the people who love you, parents and everything. It’s hard for them to understand because they don’t go through it. At first they don’t believe you because they haven’t gone through it. It’s really challenging, going through the steps of acceptance throughout everything. Transitioning is just going to be really hard with families.

A lot of my peers at my school accept this. A lot of them do. But some of them—it’s a really new concept, and it’s hard to tell them, “I want to identify as this and this.”

Substitutes are the worst. Usually they just go by the attendance sheet that they’re given. It’s like, the people who don’t know your birth name, and you don’t want them to know, and it’s—I’m just like, “Yo, OK, that’s cool. You can’t really deal with it.”

At the same time it’s a really stressing thing to have happen, what’s cool about it is having friends in your class that really stick up for you.

I know a lot of people have been very stickler about [pronouns], and like, “This is not OK if you don’t address me as this or this.” But truthfully,

for me, people call me what I want. Sometimes they mess up and use the wrong pronouns, and it’s fine. I say, just give people time.

Creativity identifies me most. I am a really creative person. It just comes to me easily, and I’m not a very—I’m not the best person in school. I’m too outside, out of the box. I do art. I don’t know if you know what this [social media platform] is, but it’s called a Tumblr—I post art on there. Art is a passion of mine, and I plan to do it in the future.

I know this is very narcissistic, but I’m a very intelligent person, also a very open-minded person.

I talk about anything, politics or gender or sexuality or art. Art is very big on my part.

[It’s important for people] not to be scared, not to be scared of change. This is how our world is now. I want them to understand that some people inside don’t feel like themselves, and it’s important for people to be who they are. This is a free country. How people are making it right now, it’s not. It’s OK to be scared, but not to be too scared to not accept it at all. [Some people] feel like it’s OK to be mean to people. Ω

Want to try a new winter sport?

Here’s where to go.

he mountains are already snow-capped, and that means it’s winter sport season. A lot of Reno and Tahoe dwellers

are already geared up and ready to hit the slopes and trails, but if you’ve never tried skiing or snowboarding, and you’re wondering where to start, we found some expert recommendations to point you in the right direction.

FiRsT ResoRT Making sense of the options Reno is within day-tripping distance of a mother lode of ski resorts, so where would a new skier or boarder begin? It depends what you’re looking for.

Mount Rose, just a 30-minute drive from south Reno, is a locals’ mainstay. For beginners, it has pros and cons. Some decry the lack of gentle terrain. Once you’ve conquered the bunny slope, called the Flying Jenny, you’ll have to graduate fast to slopes a few levels up in steepness. Mount Rose does offer ski and snowboard lessons and beginner packages to help you scale that learning curve though, and if you plan to start the season by binge-skiing, the $99 Dip Your Toe in the Snow Pass, which is 16

good from opening day through Dec. 18, could pay off big-time.

Jessica Fisk from the University of Nevada, Reno’s Winter Sports Club recommends Boreal Mountain Resort for its beginner-friendly terrain and its lift ticket deals, which are among the best around. For college students and active duty military, day passes can be as low as $15 on Fridays. The disadvantage here is that the slopes can be packed with people.

Dylan Silver, a freelance journalist who covers Tahoe outdoors, advised, “Heavenly, Sierra and Northstar have long, flat runs. You almost can’t go wrong on them as a beginner.”

All of the region’s resorts offer lessons. The Ski & Ride School at Heavenly ranks as a favorite, with instruction at every level, turning greenhorns into skiers and experts into badass experts.

Families with kids enjoy the non-profit Sky Tavern. Over 100,000 people have learned to ski and board there since it opened in 1948. Snow forecaster Bryan Allegretto from the Open Snow weather blog pointed out, “It’s affordable. … The mountain isn’t intimidating, and most people there will be beginners.”

To help get everyone psyched for the season, Sky Tavern hosts a Pray for Snow party Dec. 2.

oFF The beATen pATh Backcountry, baby!

Going backcountry means skiing, snowboarding or snowshoeing outside a patrolled or marked area.

That can involve taking a lift up a mountain and skiing or boarding down a resort’s backcountry territory—or it can mean you wander out into the wilderness, hike up a mountain and descend in relative solitude.

That’s relative solitude because going backcountry alone is a bad idea, so bring some friends. Other bad ideas include getting killed in an avalanche. According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, “Over the last 10 winters an average of 27 people died in avalanches each winter in the United States.” So, first things first, get thee

to an avalanche safety session and learn the basics. Your next opportunity is on Nov. 16, when Sierra Avalanche Center hosts a backcountry and avalanche awareness class at REI, 2225 Harvard Way. The class is free, but you need to register in advance at www.rei.com/stores/reno.

Popular backcountry stomping grounds include the Castle Peak area north of Donner Summit, which is patrolled by Tahoe Backcountry Ski Patrol, a volunteer group that provides information and assistance for backcountry travelers in the Tahoe and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forests. Less speed, gReAT views Where to cross-country ski There are two schools of thought on learning to cross-country ski. Some prefer the teach-yourself method, which is not too hard and has the advantage of being free once you have the gear. To take up the sport on your own, simply spend a few minutes gathering tips on YouTube, then head to Tahoe Meadows, an easily accessible snow-sport spot that’s part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe

National Forest. It’s four miles southwest of the Mount Rose ski area on Highway 431. Park near the Tahoe Meadows South Trailhead across from the sledding hill, where you can pick trails or blaze one yourself.

Don’t forget to pack a thermos of hot chocolate. There are no amenities here, but it’s a pretty spot.

Others prefer to learn under the guidance of an instructor. Tahoe Donner Cross Country in Truckee has lessons, clinics and events such as Equipment Demo Day on Dec. 28, not to mention creature comforts such as cross country warming huts and the Alder Creek Adventure Center, complete with bar, café and wifi.

“We call ourselves the best place to learn and continue learning,” said Tahoe Donner rep Derek Moore.

“We have over 100 kilometers of stable terrain. Just this year we’re adding an additional 16 kilometers of trails, through a recent acquisition of Crabtree Canyon.”

Gear up Think ahead about rentals “I’ve skied for 68 of my 70 years,” said Cindy Murin, cashier and concierge at Bobo’s, where she and a staff of eager skiers and boarders are glad to lend advice on their favorite gear, their favorite runs, and pretty much all things winter. The shop rents skis, poles, boards and snowshoes. Murin’s top tip: Renting equipment in town in the morning before you hit the slopes will save you money, and a season equipment rental ($99.95 kids, $139.95 adults) will save you even more. She advised dropping by to arrange a season rental before Thanksgiving.

After that the selection gets thinner.

A vacant lot on North Virginia Street just became the Reno Playa Art Park, featuring sculptures that have appeared at the Burning Man festival.

Maria Partridge, the park’s coordinator and artist advocate for Burning Man, said, “It’s bringing the culture of Burning Man to Reno. ... We’re creating here, hopefully, like, a community gathering spot.”

Partridge, along with Burning Man co-founder Crimson Rose, curated a small exhibit of playa art in 2007 and an installation of tree sculptures near the Riverside Hotel called “The Mangrove” in 2008. For the new park, she collaborated with members of the Reno Gateway Project and Artech to pick five sculptures.

“Something like ‘Imago’ here … on the desert it was beautiful, but it was immediately covered in dust,” said Partridge, gesturing to a gazebo constructed of faux butterfly wings. “But here you really get the iridescent quality of what it is, so it’s completely different in an urban setting than it is out on the playa.”

Kirsten Berg, the artist who created the sculpture in homage to both the metamorphic properties of the butterfly and the temples of Southeast Asia where she lives for most of the year, sees the park as a credit to Reno’s shifting cultural dynamic.

“We pass through Reno every year because our launching spot is the Bay Area,” said Berg. “We always remark on the change, especially in the last five years, and we think it’s the art and the artistic energy that a lot of young people are bringing to the area.”

Muralist Joe C. Rock is painting the massive, Burning Man-themed mural for the park. He said he’s noticed a renewed acceptance of his craft in recent years.

“There’s all these businesses that are really accepting it, and they’re realizing that it’s such a benefit to the community,” said Rock, who has been painting murals in Reno for over a decade. “It’s not just a blank, drab wall for someone to look at, and if you hired a painter to paint your wall that [single] color, it’s probably the same amount that you’re going to pay me.”

The art park’s placement in the main corridor between the downtown and university districts also serves as an incentive for foot traffic—one of the hallmarks of the redevelopment of areas such as midtown.

“There’s always people taking photographs in front of the murals—prom pictures and this and that—where, 10 years ago, there’s definitely not somebody taking a prom picture on Center Street,” said Rock.

The lot that houses the new art installation is being leased, and Partridge said the park will probably be moved in six months to a year, after the lot is slated for redevelopment. Meanwhile, she foresees the park benefiting downtown.

“When the city knocked down those motels … this would have been a blight area, and it would have had a chain link fence across the front,” she said. “I mean, how good is that for Circus Circus and the Eldo[rado] and downtown Reno? It’s not, right?”

The idea of a temporary “pop-up art park,” is one that she thinks could be employed annually.

“I would probably curate and choose X amount of projects that I think could actually work in Reno for a year … and then work with the city to say, ‘Is there an empty lot, or is there someplace that we could actually do a Reno Playa Art Park?’” said Partridge. “It’s all an experiment.” Ω

The Reno Playa Art Park, located on Virginia Street north of Fifth Street, opens Nov. 10 with a reception, 5-8 p.m., that includes a flaming ribbon cutting, food trucks, entertainment and a temporary beer garden.

Chicken People

This is a charming documentary about people who raise chickens for competition, and the people in this movie take their craft seriously. There’s the mom who got over a drinking problem by focusing on her chickens, resulting in a sense of career purpose and a few awards. There’s the singer with a gig in Branson, Missouri, who longs to be home with his family, taking care of his chickens and attending the major competitions. And then there’s the engineer who designs race car and tractor pull engines, but works obsessively on the side with chickens for show. If anything, the movie teaches a lot about the actual chickens, the many breeds, and their kind of adorable mannerisms. Let it be said, some of the chickens the folks raise in this movie are pretty impressive. Director Nicole Lucas Haimes has made a fun movie that leads up to a final competition where all those mentioned above are involved. I never thought I’d find a chicken beauty pageant interesting, but Haimes makes it so. (Available for rent on iTunes, Amazon.com and On Demand during a limited theatrical run.)

Horror fans know director Ti West for his cult classic horror film House of the Devil, and the horror films V/H/S, The Innkeepers and The Sacrament. His latest, starring

Inferno

This is easily the worst of the Robert Langdon series, a series that was already pretty terrible in that both The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons blew ass. Ron Howard once again directs Tom Hanks as Langdon, and this series needed to be put down after the first installment. When Langdon wakes up in a hospital room, with a bullet scratch on his head and loss of memory, Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones) is there to help out. Then, somebody starts toward Langdon’s hospital room guns blazing, and the so-called adventure begins. Langdon is having hallucinations about something akin to Dante’s “Inferno” while trying to work his way through amnesia. He’s in Italy, and he doesn’t know why, but Sienna, for reasons unknown, is going to stay by his side until he works things out. Langdon must race against time (and solve puzzles!) in order to save the world. The main “puzzle” Langdon has to solve this time is where a doomsday bomb containing a virus that will wipe out the majority of the Earth’s population has been planted. If he doesn’t find the Make Everybody Sick bomb, it will be an apocalypse like no other. Gee, I wonder if he’ll find it? I wonder if the whole world will die in a Ron Howard movie?

Talk about your total lack of suspense in a film.

Ouija: Origin of Evil

How bad was 2014’s Ouija? It was so piss poor and forgettable that I had to actually look into my archives for a review to confirm I had actually seen the damn thing. I wasn’t sure. In short, Ouija was a deplorable shitshow. Ouija: Origin of Evil is a bona fide movie miracle in many ways. Ouija was awful, but it was enough of a hit to warrant a sequel.

Still, it shocked me to see the sequel had actually made it to movie screens rather than some direct-to-digital platform. The fact that Mike Flanagan, the director of the crappy Oculus, was at the helm did little to quash my skepticism. After about 30 seconds of watching young Lulu Wilson as Doris Zander, I realized that Flanagan might to be onto something with this casting. This kid, with her authentic 1960s haircut and mature-for-her-years delivery, crafts one of the great horror film performances of all time. Yes, I’m bestowing that honor on a performance that occurs in a sequel to one of the worst horror films ever made. The film, set convincingly in 1965, follows right along with Wilson as truly inspired and creepy. The Doris character plays with a Ouija board, and soon has some pleasant conversations with her dead father. Then, very bad things start to happen. Is it one of the best horror films ever made? No. A few missteps in the final act take it down a notch. Is it one of the best horror sequels ever made? You bet it is.

The latest Marvel movie is certainly one of the weirder ones, with Benedict Cumberbatch starring as the title character, a sorcerer who can cast spells and slip through passageways in time. It’s an origin story, showing how Strange loses his surgeon’s hands in an accident, travels to India, and learns about the mystical arts from The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). I have to admit, I didn’t always follow exactly what was going on in this movie, and I found some stretches a little convoluted and boring. When the movie soars, it soars high, and Cumberbatch winds up being a decent choice for the role, even with his weird American accent. Director Scott Derrickson (Sinister), who looked like an odd choice for a Marvel movie with his horror film pedigree, acquits himself nicely. The movie often plays like a Matrix-Inception mashup with a little bit of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon thrown in for good measure. The special effects are first rate. Doctor Strange is a bit of an oddball character, and he’s supposed to factor into future Avengers movies. I’ll be curious to see how he fits into the mix with the likes of AntMan and Hawkeye.

Ethan Hawke and John Travolta, is a major departure from his usual projects, a capable, full-on homage to Sergio Leone Westerns.

Hawke plays Paul, a drifter who finds himself in a frontier ghost town with a few remaining inhabitants. He and his dog immediately get into some trouble with Gilly (James Ransome), the son of the town marshal (Travolta). Bad things transpire—this is sort of John Wick set in the old wild West—and Paul sets out for revenge.

The resultant gunfights are nicely staged, accentuated by good work from Hawke, Travolta and Ransome. While Hawke is always reliable these days, Travolta’s film career has been on a bit of a downslide (one of a few his career has endured). His performance here as a semicrooked lawman with a small streak of decency is actually funny at times, and consists of his best work in a film in over five years. (He was also quite good as Robert Shapiro in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.) The film’s biggest surprise is Taissa Farmiga, providing solid comic relief as a fast-talking hotel operator. This plays out like a deranged Batmanwith-a-calculator action flick. Ben Affleck plays Christian Wolff, a high functioning autistic man who has managed to harness his extreme intelligence with numbers and physical tics down into the strangest of professions.

By day, he’s your average accountant helping a farm owner find tax loopholes to save a few thousand bucks. At night, he’s some sort of accountant ninja who can take out a room full of mob guys with a dinner knife and some totally Batman forearm blasts to the face. Christian takes jobs laundering books for dirty folks all over the world and, while he does have a modest, sparsely decorated home, he also has a mobile man cave—or, should I say, Batcave— that keeps all the spoils of his riches—money, gold, Jackson Pollock paintings and, yes, collector’s items like Batman comic books.

During one job, trying to find missing money for a prosthetics company led by John Lithgow, he takes a liking to fellow accountant Dana (the invaluable Anna Kendrick), and they conspire to find the missing money, which, of course, wasn’t really supposed to happen. Maybe I’m the only one who sees this movie as Batman doing taxes. Maybe that makes me some sort of amateurish idiot who likes movies that are actually a little on the bad side just because they play out in a weird way in his overreaching mind. If so, I say “Hooray!” to that.

Tucked away in the Incline Village hills, electronic music artist Memory Code, a.k.a. Mike Adamo, works on a beat track in a studio packed with drums, recording and producing equipment, and old-school vinyl records.

As a drummer and drum instructor, he’s played in a wealth of styles, from West African drums for the world blues band Peter Joseph Burtt and the King Tide, to hip-hop breakbeat drumming, a genre that Adamo has written an instructional book about—The Breakbeat Bible. His beats have been featured in commercials for Gatorade and Domo, and he’s done programming for loop companies such as Groove Monkee.

As an instructor, Adamo has over 30 drum students, who he meets with in-person and via Skype. He finds teaching just as important as his musicmaking.

“I feel like if you don’t give back or inspire younger folks to get into music, then you aren’t perpetuating the art form,” he said. “I think it’s really important. And I can tell that [my students] love it, too.”

On Sept. 21, Adamo released his first album as Memory Code, titled The Great Rose Window. It is a 14-track album that uses electronic music as a foundation to blend old school hip-hop beats, verbal sound bites and jazz and funk instrumental influences.

The album is less a set of tracks and more a full auditory experience, best savored by listening to it in its entirety.

However, each track stands on its own, something Adamo finds necessary for music in this day and age.

Some tracks, such as, “The People of Orphalese (Shine On) [featuring

New Pharoah],” groove like a kickback playlist. John F. Kennedy’s voice opens the song, with a clip from his “New Frontier” speech, then the song transitions into a jazz-infused hip-hop beat that infiltrates your bones.

Others feel like a visceral experience.

“Silver Threads & Mercury Drops” is the penultimate track. Its title is a reference to chem trails—and Adamo’s feelings of anger and helplessness about them. It hits like an unrelenting force of nature yet still feels like a high-end EDM jam.

As a whole, The Great Rose Window creates a realm ruled by a hip-hop climate, infused with references to current affairs. It stuns with an edginess that feels ahead of its time, compared to the wave of synth pop that rules over today’s music. The construction of every song is nuanced and multidimensional yet is still accessible to mainstream audiences.

The album is for sale on Bandcamp for $10, but you also have the option to stream it for free—or name your own price, in which case proceeds from album sales through Sept. 21, 2017, will be donated to Project MANA, an organization that assists the food insecure in the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee regions.

“I want my music to be a force of positivity and change,” said Adamo.

“And I felt like the best way to do that was to help my little corner of the world.”

While Adamo has a number of projects in the works, his main focus these days is to grow his body of work as Memory Code. Currently, he is working on a new EP and a beat tape, and he’s planning some live shows as Memory Code, beginning in January of next year. Ω

The cellist and composer will play a special benefit concert in the Nightingale Sky Room at the Nevada Museum of Art on Saturday, Nov. 12. Keating uses a cello and a foot-controlled laptop to record layer upon layer of cello, creating intricate, haunting and compelling music. All proceeds from the show will benefit the Reno Philharmonic’s after-school music education program, RPA Kids, which provides free after-school music instruction at select Washoe County Title 1 elementary schools. Our emotions are our internal police force. They evolved to protect and serve—protecting us from allowing things that don’t serve our interest. Your hiding that you have kids will make guys angry, including those who’d be interested in you, kids and all. The problem goes to character. If you’re dishonest about this, what else will you be dishonest about?

The right thing to do in online dating is to give men who will ultimately reject you the info they need to do that right away—keeping them from wasting their time and yours. Otherwise, it’s like seeking a new accountant by interviewing plumbers. Being honest will narrow your pool down to those who are actual possibilities for you, like divorced dads who’d be open to Brady Bunch-ing.

For example, research by social psych grad student Bo Winegard and his colleagues finds that grief seems to be, among other things, a kind of broadcasting of a person’s “proclivity to form devoted bonds with others.” In other words, “Trust me! I love deeply!”

As for what your girlfriend’s signaling with all this late-husband reflux, maybe she’s telling you to back off. Maybe she wants you to try harder at something. Or maybe she just misses her late hubby (or feels guilty for being happy with you), and this is her way of keeping him around—in some form.

Ask her—in the most non-snarly, loving way— what she’s trying to communicate to you when she waxes on about him. Tell her it hurts your feelings—giving you the message that you’re failing her somehow. Maybe she’ll start appreciating what she has instead of being so focused on what she buried.

Date night shouldn’t involve your waving goodbye to your girlfriend as she goes off with a picnic dinner to the cemetery. Ω

Biggest Little Theatre Festival

Tell me a little bit more about how the pageant works.

It’s just like every other pageant. The difference is that we truly embrace the curvy body, and we want to showcase, basically, that women should be proud of their curves and flaunt them. They shouldn’t have to feel that they need to have a six-pack and have a two-piece on for them to be proud onstage.

Talk to me about the purpose of the pageant.

To me, the purpose of the pageant is to promote body positivity and overall women empowerment. I feel that women, especially today, have those wonders of, “Am I pretty? … I don’t look like her in the magazine. Or I’m not the typical size to have model work.” … So I feel that having this pageant is … almost like a groundbreaking experience for women to kind of

Nevada did its part. I feel great about us libs here in the Silver State. Hillary—check. Catherine— check. Pot—check. Gun background check—check. Goddamn, we rocked here in Nevada and brought it on home. So what’s up with all these pissy white rednecks in Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania?
