Good stuff Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

I like this issue.

That’s not to say that we’re in the habit of putting out newspapers I don’t like, but every once in a while we put out an issue where it seems like everybody on the team is contributing their best work, where everyone up and down the batting order is knocking in runs.

This is one of those issues.

Let’s start with the cover. Eric Marks was his usual talented self, running out to the Black Lives Matter demonstration and capturing some amazing images. And our designer Brian Breneman did a great job laying out those images in a nice two page spread.

Elsewhere in the issue, news editor Dennis Myers explored in depth some of the complex social issues surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement. So not only did we get great images, but great analysis as well.

Dennis also wrote the lead story of this week’s feature Back to School package, about how Washoe County School District’s reputation is actually tarnished by negative statewide statistics.

Special projects editor Jeri Chadwell-Singley also contributed to that package, and she, designer Sarah Hansel and some of our contributors put together a fantastic Family Guide supplement focused on family-friendly road trips. And Jeri wrote a fascinating piece for our Green column to boot.

Great arts section this week as well. Arts editor Kris Vagner wrote about Greg Allen, one of Reno’s best painters, and music writer Anna Hart wrote an excellent article about Schizopolitans, one of Reno’s best bands.

Calender editor Kelley Lang and all of our regular columnists and contributors brought their A game this week as well.

Except Bob Grimm. He’s way off base. There’s no way that the new Ghostbusters movie is as bad as he’s making it out to be. I haven’t even seen it yet, and already I know Bob is just plain wrong.

Letter about a letter

Re “Calling a foul” (Notes from the Neon Babylon, June 23): O.J. Simpson may have gotten away with murder in LA when the jury handed down the verdict. That should have been the end of it. A crime was committed. Court was convened. A trial was held. A verdict was rendered. End of story—or at least O.J.’s part of it.

Justice did not win or lose that day. Instead of dropping it, many people who watched parts of the trial on TV or saw recaps of it on the evening news decided to render their own verdict of guilty. (If you don’t like the jury verdicts, don’t spend your time trying to get out of jury duty.) People went after O.J. in any and all ways possible—financial, civil rights violations, etc. It took the case from being about justice to revenge.

When O.J. was convicted in Nevada, a member of the court said that Nevada did what California couldn’t. They also said O.J. got what he deserved in Vegas. No, he didn’t. He was partly sentenced for what happened in California. That in itself is not right. You get a speeding ticket in Reno. At traffic court the judge saw you were given a warning for illegal parking on a San Francisco street years ago. The judge takes that into account and triples your fine. Not right. The two are not related, just like the two O.J. cases are not related. True, a judge can take into account past behavior but only if it pertains to the case—not to enact revenge on a previous case that the judge rightfully or wrongfully feels was unfairly rendered.

If we allow—and we already have—the court system to give out sentences based on revenge for a previous case, then how fair is the system?

U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei responded to a letter recently asking him, post Orlando, to do something about guns and the ongoing slaughter of innocents. By now most of us have seen or heard excuses for inaction but two remarks in the congressman’s response are interesting.

First, Congressman Amodei didn’t mention Orlando. He said, “In the aftermath of recent tragedies—blah blah blah.” Why not mention Orlando? Because it’s a form letter, and Amodei knows very well he will be sending it out again.

Secondly, the congressman assures his constituent that his “thoughts and prayers are with the victims etc. etc.” I have to ask, what exactly are those thoughts, Congressman? Are you picturing corpses piled in a corner? Blood and brains on the floor and walls? Are you trying to imagine the velocity of rounds moving through the bodies of victims, victims you will never in your political career lift a finger to help?

Are you trying to hear the screaming of dying men and women? But we know what he’s thinking, really. He’s hoping that his form letter sympathies are acceptable to the NRA and to the paranoid wing of his party. He’s thinking everyone will forget about Orlando because, after all, practically everyone has forgotten about Newtown and Charleston and San Bernardino and, well—who can name all the places and deaths and grieving that a congressman has to forget.

Thanks for the letter, Congressman. I know you’ll probably say, “It was nothing.” Exactly, sir.

Give to get?

Re “Always try to come in 49th” (Left Foot Forward, June 30): The glass will always be half empty for Sheila. Too bad that the many positives of growth—average wage increase, job opportunities, etc.—are totally ignored by her liberal, anti-growth message. She focuses on the negatives like using state data to disrespect the real success of the Washoe County School District and tax subsidies, which very few companies actually get, and even when they get them it amounts to very little—a temporary reduction in taxes that actually brings more revenue to the state than the taxes that are not collected.

Any research in this area would reveal that of the majority of the incentives “given” to Tesla, over half were reductions in taxes on manufacturing equipment, a tax that most states don’t even have! But then reality and facts never matter to Sheila.

My favorite day trip is a place on the Yuba River that we go, the Yuba River right off of I-80. Well, there’s lots of great rocks and you can get up there and be in the water, be on the rocks and just hang out with the kids—in the water, out of the water, connecting with nature.

Head on Last week, after they had been told by ABC that a forum was being held in Washington, D.C., to discuss race, policing and violence, some participants—such as Black Lives Matter founder Daunasia Yancey and police victim Eric Garner’s daughter Erica—attended but were not permitted to participate in the discussion.

Something similar happened at an NAACP meeting in Reno that same day. When audience members tried to ask Washoe Sheriff Chuck Allen about his position on ballot question 1 (background checks), the audience was told that the meeting was not for “combative” dialogue and the exchange was effectively quashed (see news, page 8).

Interestingly, an audience member later in the meeting called on elected officials to stop being so polite to each other and criticize those officials who duck hard issues.

The NAACP can conduct its events any way it wants, of course, but when people are turning to places other than our polarized, ineffective government for leadership, it’s a tribute to the NAACP that a mostly white audience turned to that organization for guidance. We urge its officers not to waste the opportunity with safe and cautious dialogue. Now is the time to go at these issues head on.

Would direct and candid questions have made the occasion uncomfortable? Yes. But neither Sheriff Allen nor Reno Police Chief Jason Soto are tender orchid blossoms. Both accepted public office knowing there would be difficult times. And if there is ever a time when hard questions should be asked, it is when the nature of law enforcement is being widely questioned and some seem to seek extra-legal remedies against police.

“What I have said is that the data shows that there are disparities in how persons of color and whites are treated in the aggregate,” President Obama has said. “We have to make sure that we don’t pretend that there aren’t potential problems in how communities and police interact.”

If there is anger out there, it needs an outlet other than the one at the end of a gun or rifle barrel. “Shooting police is not a civil rights tactic,” said civil rights leader Jesse Jackson last week. Neither is it a solution to anything, but there do need to be remedies when law enforcement is perceived as not being held accountable.

If it is only a perception, it needs to be shown as such in a way the public will understand and accept. If it is not just a perception but reality, it needs to be dealt with. It cannot become a case of black lives versus blue lives.

“It’s coming to the point where no lives matter,” said Joycelyn Jackson, sister of a police officer—a black officer, not that it should matter—killed in Baton Rouge.

In truth, blue lives already matter more than other lives.

Some states have made killing police officers a death penalty offense. In Nevada, one of the “aggravating circumstances” that can lead to the death penalty is whether the victim was a police officer.

It has become a cliché that “every life is precious,” though it is certainly true. If we get into a competition over the value of lives, it is one more thing that will drive us away from each other—and we already have too many politicians trying to pit us against each other now. Let’s open up discussion of these difficult things. Ω

The gift of good example In this political season of unbridled Trumpian narcissism, it’s useful to peel back a few decades and consider the example of others who served our country well and true, without scandal or pathological lying, giving selflessly of themselves to make our nation strong.

If only our representatives would take a few lessons from Sarge.

As I finished Scott Stossel’s fascinating biography of Sargent Shriver, I was filled with hope and despair. Hope that public servants like Shriver existed in my lifetime, employing their talents and determination to demonstrate leadership and dedication to the greater good. Despair because there are so few like him in public office today, and those with potential to achieve greatness seem paralyzed by an epoch that rewards partisanship and stalemate more than the skills needed to forge the necessary compromises to begin healing our wounds of racial, gender and income inequality.

The biography arrived via Shriver’s son, Mark, whom I met during my legislative

years and served with on the National Commission on Children and Disasters.

Like all the Shriver children, Mark has followed his parents’ example of a life worth living, currently serving as the president of Save the Children Network.

He told his father about our work on a bill to expand tutoring services for children in rural Nevada schools, and Sarge inscribed the biography thanking me for my service as a Peace Corps Volunteer and state legislator. But I hardly feel worthy of his gratitude.

As a Kennedy brother-in-law, Shriver’s accomplishments have been overshadowed by the historical mythology of Jack, Bob and Ted Kennedy. And yet, his life’s work is indescribably rich with unparalleled achievement. He created the Peace Corps and served as its leader during the idealistic and difficult early years, inspiring thousands of young Americans to leave the comfort of their homes to venture into international public service. He headed up the War on Poverty under President

Johnson, overseeing the creation of Head Start, the Job Corps, VISTA and Legal Services for the Poor. He supported the endeavors of his wife, Eunice, to change the way the world viewed people with mental retardation, creating the Special Olympics to give them the thrill of athletic competition. He also served as a distinguished ambassador to France.

In a speech to the National Bar Association 50 years ago, Shriver’s words are prescient and full of wisdom for our troubled times. “We know what the collective effect of discrimination and poverty have been on the black thread. But if the War on Poverty means anything, it is a statement that we must look—not just to the poor—but to the whole cloth too—and even to the loom. The whole fabric of our society must be rewoven—and the patterns we must weave are patterns of justice, opportunity, dignity and mutual respect.”

Shriver retired from the chairmanship of Special Olympics International at the age of 87 after a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s

disease. In a letter to his closest friends, he said, “I want to keep my ideas fresh so I can actively take part in public debate.

But as we all come to learn sooner or later, desire is only part of the equation. To play a role, one needs not only desire, but skills too; not only a vision, but the ability to put it into action.”

When President Clinton recognized Shriver with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994, he summed up his career beautifully by saying, “Sargent Shriver has awakened millions of Americans, including many in this administration, to the responsibilities of service, the possibilities of change and the sheer joy of making the effort.”

Shriver died in 2011 at age 95. President Obama called him “one of the brightest lights of the greatest generation.” Ω

A nation divided Before 1908, there was no Federal Bureau of Investigation. The country’s largest detective agency was Pinkerton, a private investigative agency. They were the answer to “Who are those guys?” asked by Butch Cassidy and many other robbers and killers.

But progressives resented the Pinkertons.

They wanted a public federal agency that, according to progressive doctrine, would be unbiased and efficient. It would be managed on scientific principles of forensics and overseen by democratically elected representatives. Hatred of the private sector, of the profit motive, and consumer sovereignty are hallmarks of the progressive mindset.

Once created, the new Bureau of Investigation (Federal came later) gained its first national attention by vigorously prosecuting the Mann Act, which punished black men, like the famous boxer Jack Johnson, for “trafficking” their white girlfriends across state lines. Later, they gained popular support as crime fighters through movies like The FBI starring Jimmy Stewart, and by publishing the FBI’s “Most Wanted List.”

Its most famous director, the paranoid J. Edgar Hoover, thoroughly politicized the FBI by spying on politicians and civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King. As the FBI became politicized, it gradually turned away from investigating real crimes toward “national security.”

In recent times the reputation of the FBI has declined due to revelations of incompetence and corruption. The Bureau failed to stop the Boston and Orlando attacks, while it entraps deluded but harmless Muslims through paid informants. Its cyber-crimes unit is staffed with third raters. Google “FBI incompetency.”

FBI Director James Comey wrapped up the criminal investigation of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton with a whimper, not a bang. Comey has a reputation on Capitol Hill of being a “straight shooter,” but he shot the principle of equality before the law in the foot by declining to prosecute Hillary Clinton for even a misdemeanor. Many ordinary Americans are prosecuted for felonies for much less

“extreme carelessness.” Comey’s decision to avoid making history but instead opting for a safe career and nice retirement—no doubt to write a book regretting his decision—simply adds to the reputation of the FBI as careful to protect the powerful, and its own ass, while persecuting the defenseless.

Within days, the country was shocked by videos of apparently unjustified police shootings of black men in Baton Rouge and St. Paul, followed by the murderous rampage by a black military veteran shooting 14 Dallas police officers after a peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstration.

Is America coming apart? The Red and Blue political gangs are unwilling to work together but always willing to point fingers at each other. The Blues, like President Obama and presumptive presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, emphasize gun control and white guilt. The Reds, except for the libertarians, talk about black on black violence and eternal support for the police.

The progressives got their constitutionally unauthorized federal detective agency,

and the Pinkertons are a shadow of what they could have been. Are we better off?

What the progressives did was create an intertwined law enforcement system where everyone works under qualified immunity, meaning that they cannot be held personally liable for acts committed on duty. If an officer is successfully sued, the taxpayer—not the individual officer—pays the victims. The police are a protected class.

I credit Black Lives Matter for its proposals to remove some of the extraordinary legal privileges police have when they shoot a civilian. Private investigators like the Pinkertons can be individually sued if they violate civil rights. Qualified immunity should be removed for acts of police brutality, and the individuals responsible exposed to tort liability. Ω

BAD EXAMPLE CATCHES ON On the first night of the Republican convention, GOP leaders took a page from Nevada Democratic Party officials, using a voice vote to quash a revolt by die-hard Trump opponents who had shocked the Republican leadership by getting a majority of signatures from delegates in 11 states—four more than needed—to get a floor vote on convention rules. U.S. Rep. Steve Womack of Arkansas, presiding over the convention, used a voice vote to claim the convention had approved the rules without change.

Just as the same stunt worked at the Nevada Democratic Convention in May, so insurgent GOP delegates angrily shouted for a roll call vote again—which was denied them. Again.

SuPErDELEgATES TArgETED Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is expected to try to get rid of a substantial portion of the unelected delegates known as “superdelegates”—party and elected officials who get delegate seats at the convention automatically. It could mean a floor fight, though some Clintonites are expected to join in.

Nevada’s DNC delegation will have eight unelected delegates, seven of whom support Hillary Clinton.

Sanders seems particularly concerned because those delegates came out for Clinton so early. The purpose of superdelegates is to wait to see how a presidential race is going and intervene if they believe the party is likely to nominate a troublesome or unelectable candidate. Clinton had hundreds of votes lined up from superdelegates before 2016 even began.

POT TALE Of THE wEEk In a June 7 editorial, the Las Vegas Review-Journal claimed, “And no matter how much pot enthusiasts argue otherwise, marijuana is both addictive—one in 10 people who try pot will become hooked on it—and a gateway to more deadly drugs that kill more than 45,000 Americans a year.”

The gateway theory has been around for decades—long before any research on drugs had been done. Thus, it plainly originated as a product of supposition, not of science. One version of it in the early 20th century said that tobacco always leads to harder stuff. Con man Charles Towns, who ran “clinics” where alleged cures for drug addiction were offered, said, “It [tobacco use] always precedes alcoholism and drug addiction. I’ve never had a drug case or an alcoholic case (excepting a few women) that didn’t have a history of excessive smoking.”

In the case of marijuana, once outside the realm of supposition and into practical tests, there is evidence that marijuana—far from acting as a gateway—actually serves as a barrier to “harder stuff.”

In 1969, the Nixon administration launched what it called “Operation Intercept”—slowing traffic at Mexico/U.S. border towns and thoroughly searching every vehicle. It certainly dried up supplies of marijuana in the Southwest—and demand for harder stuff shot up. New users of smack crowded into clinics. As marijuana slowly became more available again, heroin cases declined. California physician David Smith told Newsweek, “The government line is that the use of marijuana leads to more dangerous drugs. The fact is that the lack of marijuana leads to more dangerous drugs.”

The previous year during the Johnson administration, a military crackdown on marijuana in Vietnam reduced supply and prompted an upsurge in heroin use by U.S. servicepeople.

Incidentally, the Review-Journal has changed its position on marijuana since it was purchased by billionaire Sheldon Adelson.

Search for answers Residents meet to discuss race and police “I want to do something, but I don’t know what to do,” Leslie Sexton told the mostly white audience at a July 14 NAACP meeting in Reno.

She had become inured to killing, she said, but the Philando Castile and Alton Sterling killings revived her horror. She wasn’t the only one searching for a way to deal with her feelings.

“I felt discouraged and hopeless last week and I wanted to do something really practical for my fellow citizens,” said Laura Freed. “I wanted to do something really practical ... for my fellow citizens.”

So she decided to volunteer for the local police advisory board—only to discover there isn’t one. To city councilmembers, the county sheriff and Reno police chief who were seated

in the audience, she called attention to Nevada Revised Statute 289.380, which provides for creation of a “review board by ordinance to advise the governing body on issues concerning peace officers, school police officers, constables and deputies of constables within the city or county.”

She also said she sought information from an unnamed Reno city councilmember about whether local police have body cameras. She said she was given a “polite brush-off. … I wanted a straight answer to that question, and I didn’t get one.”

Councilmembers Naomi Duerr and David Bobzien, seated in the front row, then spoke. Bobzien said since the Castile/Sterling incidents, “my white middle class friends have been up in my grill asking me, ‘Tell me

what’s going on in the Reno Police Department. What are you doing about this?’” He said his son has also been asking uncomfortable questions.

Duerr recalled attending ninth grade in a school that had about a 50/50 black-white split and was very tense.

“I’m struck by the fact that this was 40 years ago, and here we are talking about the same things.”

The meeting of 139 people in a small room near downtown Reno went on like that, with attendees telling their stories or answering questions. Early in the meeting, Police Chief Jason Soto and Sheriff Chuck Allen described police procedures to which their departments subscribed that are designed to avoid brutality and violence.

Longtime civil rights leader Lonnie Feemster noted that at one time, a flag was hung in front of the NAACP headquarters in New York each time someone was lynched. It read, “A MAN WAS LYNCHED YESTERDAY.” Feemster displayed a photo of a flag that was hung recently at the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York: “A MAN WAS LYNCHED BY POLICE YESTERDAY.” “I am safer being a black man today than ever in this country’s history,” Feemster said, but argued that there are obviously still serious problems. He argued that there are police procedures that can be implemented from an NAACP report, Born Suspect.

“A lot of this has been done,” he said. “We don’t need to reinvent the wheel. … What have you implemented in this report?”

Sheriff Allen said, “I do believe we are embracing all six pillars that were cited by the Department of Justice. … We are not going to go back to the office and forget about this [meeting].”

He also said, “I hope and pray we never have a mistake where we have to come together and explain” a Castile/ Sterling-type incident.

Silver lining Dr. John Whitney’s father was a farmer. But that wasn’t the life Whitney wanted for himself.

“I went into mining to get away from farming,” he explained.

Whitney earned his bachelor’s degree in geology, his master’s in mineralogy and a Ph.D. in mineral economics.

Forty years ago, Whitney was helping build the first silver heap leaching operation at a small mine in Nevada. At the same time, he and a few colleagues were working on a chemical process to separate silver from the cyanide solution used in heap leaching to collect gold from low grade ore. Little did Whitney know the project had put him on a path that led—in a roundabout way—back to farming.

Whitney continued experimenting with methods for recovering silver from mine materials well into the 1980s, when his work caught the attention of some civil servants with a problem.

“It was in the back half of 1986,” Whitney recalled. “A couple guys from Sparks and Reno called and asked if I’d be willing to meet with them—talk about a problem they had related to silver.”

It turned out that silver found in the spent chemical liquid used by one-hour photo shops, dentists, hospitals and x-ray facilities was making its way into the sewer system, and the sewage treatment plant was unable to remove it, so they ended up in the Truckee River.

Silver’s “toxic to fish when it’s in the water,” Whitney said. “And it’s really toxic to salmon and trout.”

threatened suit if the problem wasn’t fixed. Whitney agreed to test a sample of the photo chemicals and found that he was able to remove enough silver to satisfy EPA standards. When discharging photo-liquids to the sewer was banned in 1989, Whitney’s company— Itronics—was in a position to take over processing them.

But it turned out the problem was only half solved. When Whitney began receiving the liquids in bulk, he tested them further and discovered that they were also full of nitrogen and chrome-based cleaners used by photo processors. Taking the silver out wouldn’t make the liquids safe to go through the sewage treatment plant.

For a time, the county health department had Whitney remove the silver and then ship the liquids off to be mixed with water used for dust control on roads. It was a temporary fix that allowed Whitney time to hire a research librarian and start a worldwide patent survey to identify a commercial use for the leftover liquids.

“We took a year, and we found some patents that related to fertilizer-type materials that had similar chemistry,” Whitney recalled. “And I said, ‘OK, so this might work. … nitrogen, iron, sulfur—all nutrients for plants.’”

With the help of his then-retired father, Whitney began testing the liquids in his own backyard to see if they could be made into a fertilizer. Eventually, he got it right. Today, Itronics recycles spent photographic liquids—turning them into silver bullion and a brand of specialty fertilizer called GOLD’n GRO, with a concentrated formula that poses a lower risk of groundwater contamination.

On t h e r i s e Washoe is a better school district than statewide statistics might lead you to believe

hen a recent study showed Nevada had clawed its way up from 50th to 49th in the nation in the quality of its schools, folks at the Washoe County School District knew what they would soon be facing. And they were right—most news coverage did not distinguish between state and county performance.

“Look at Washoe County and judge it on our own merits, rank us on our own, and we’ll be in the upper half,” Richard Jay of Reno wrote in a letter to the Reno GazetteJournal. “Washoe County is 15 percent of the student population, while Clark County is 51 percent. Looking at our SAT scores, Washoe County combined were 1670 compared to 1491 as the national average—11 percent higher. Our ACT scores were 25 compared to 21 as a national average—16 percent higher. Advanced placement exams: 56 percent of students took at least one AP exam,

compared to the 33 percent national average; 34 percent of students passed at least one AP exam as compared to the 20 percent national average.”

The Washoe County School District received some more major awards this year—most recently, being named a “District on the Rise” by Education First, an education-improvement organization based in Seattle. It said the WCSD is “doing more with less,” which is just the message the district can use with a sales tax increase dedicated to school needs on the November ballot.

“The district directs its scarce resources to data-driven teaching and turning around low-performing schools,” the Education First report said. “The results: strong support among staff and community for reform—and achievement gaps that are closing.”

In recent years, the district has received awards for music instruction, and math and science instruction—the latter a presidential award. Washoe student Ella Breider is going to Wellesley after being named a national ACT semifinalist.

Administrator Robert Sidford was recognized for blending technology instruction with academics.

There has even been non-academic recognition, such as an environmental award for less polluting buses and an administrative award for the district’s data system’s ease of access to student records.

And two school board members, Barbara McLaury and John Mayer, have received recognition for their work.

So for the school district, being grouped with the rest of the state is particularly exasperating when considering how far the district has come: “Dropout Factories—that was the label given to nine out of 13 Washoe County high schools last fall [of 2007] by researchers with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Social Organization of Schools. These high schools have 40 percent fewer seniors than freshman. Researchers used enrollment data submitted by school districts to the U.S. Department of Education.” (“Will they graduate?” RN&R, Jan. 17, 2008).

By contrast, this year, three Washoe County School District high schools were placed among Nevada’s top 10 high schools by U.S. News and World Report. And the Washington Post named Wooster High first among Nevada public high schools for percentage of students who take and pass college level tests.

All this didn’t happen overnight. The district can’t drop a dime in a slot and get an award immediately. It has taken time, suggesting that the school board that was so demonized by the daily newspaper and community figures like Perry DiLoreto and Kathleen Sandoval did some things right.

Washoe schools superintendent Traci Davis: “For me, when people talk about the work here, I think that every superintendent and every group of board members brought something to the mission for kids. ...You see, long term, a commitment to what’s valuable for us to move this vision along and everybody brings something forward, right?”

Too much emphasis can be laid on awards, particularly national awards. And just as a state legislator last year asked why the University of Nevada, Reno needed more funding if it had reached “tier one” status without it, talking too much about the district’s accomplishments could lead voters to think the November ballot question is unnecessary.

Washoe teachers leader Dana Galvin said, “The district could get to the point where we don’t have full-time subs in the classroom.” Her predecessor as head of the Washoe Education Association, Natha Anderson, said, “If it does not pass we will be going to double session.”

That kind of argument can backfire because it sounds like a threat, as some school board members have acknowledged.

There are, of course, problem areas, as the RGJ’s series on special education is demonstrating, but no indication so far that the district fails to deal with them when they are known and within the resources it is given. Ω

Pop quiz time—how many apps are available these days?

Time’s up. The correct answer, according to the online statistics database Statista, is 2.2 million for Android users and 2 million for IOS users. Those numbers represent categories ranging from news and games to fitness and social media. And then there are scholastic apps.

Did you know that graphing calculators are used in classes ranging from pre-algebra to calculus—not to mention physics, biology, statistics and business courses? If we were conspiracy theorists we might be inclined to think that the folks at Texas Instruments—purveyors of the $150 TI-89 graphing calculator—had lobbyists pushing the graphing calculator on younger and younger demographics. Well, regardless, let’s have three cheers for disruptive technological innovations. The Desmos Graphing Calculator app is free, and it can totally plot polar, Cartesian and parametric graphs—whatever those are.

Bibliographies are time-consuming and, honestly, really frustrating to make. EasyvBib is a helpful tool for creating citations. It allows users to scan book barcodes and/or search books to create citations.

Afterward, they can be exported to the user’s email.

Plus, users can switch between more than 7,000 citation styles. Who even knew there were that many?

Let’s see—there’s the Modern Language Association style manual, the American Psychological Association publication manual and the Chicago Manual of Style.

Are we forgetting one? Oh, right—Associated Press style.

World Map Atlas 2016 This one’s probably best for the little kids—and maybe adults who snoozed during geography class. Its name may be long and awkward, but World Map Atlas 2016 is actually pretty well made. Its homescreen allows users to choose different tabs to scroll through lists of countries, rivers, peaks and wonders of the world. It’s also searchable. And in addition to pinpointing countries on a zoomable app, it has a variety of information on each country, including flags, population, average lifespan, GDP and a bunch of other stuff. Pop-up ads might be distracting, especially for youngsters, but the app doesn’t require a data connection to run (though you’ll want to update it every once in a while to ensure accuracy).

Wikipedia That’s right—Wiki-freakin’-pedia. Yes, it’s got a bad rep as an unreliable source for academic research.

And it is! You absolutely should not use the EasyBib app to cite it in your college papers. Nonetheless, Wikipedia is an excellent place to begin your research on pretty much any subject. That’s because it’s the most comprehensive reference work that human beings have ever created. According to the Wikipedia website, it has “more than 32 million articles in 280 languages.” And the Wikipedia app has plenty of cool features that make it worthwhile. For instance, users can organize articles into reading lists that can

be accessed offline. On the off chance that you’re an avid RN&R reader who lives somewhere else in the world, you should be aware that there are currently mobile providers in 74 countries that don’t charge their customers data fees for using the Wikipedia app.

If you’re here in the States, you should be rightfully put out that there are no providers that offer the same in the U.S.

StudyBlue Flashcards & Quizzes There are dozens of flashcard apps—some free, others pay to play. StudyBlue is a good app for students of any age. The app allows users to create their own flashcards and notes, to which they can add images and audio. Classmates can have discussions and share flashcards between one another. It also has an offline mode that allows users to study when they don’t have access to Wi-Fi and don’t want to waste mobile data. Users have access to more than 350 million student-created flashcards on a variety of subjects, as well as content provided by universities and high schools. And, get this, there’s a potential recreational application hidden in there too—bartending flashcards. Study for that biology exam Thursday, but be sure to set aside time to beef up your knowledge on martini variations before Friday night. Ω

T

he news that a Black Lives Matter demonstration was going to be held in downtown Reno on July 15 attracted some of the internet’s nastiest trolls.

The comments on social media and local TV news pieces about the event, back when it was still upcoming, were downright disturbing. Latent racism became blatant. Some jerk even “joked” about driving a truck through the crowd. It was the kind of stuff that if you were to have woken up in the middle of the night and made the never-a-good-idea move of glancing at Facebook, it would have ruined whatever chance you might have had of falling back to sleep.

A lot of the comments accused the Black Lives Matter movement itself of being racist and reacted with variations of “Shouldn’t all lives matter?” As a friend of ours said, that response is a little like going to the emergency room with a broken leg, and then watching in frustration as the doctor examines your arms and ribs. You say, “But doctor—it’s my leg that needs help!” And the doctor replies, “All bones matter.”

So it was a bit of a relief that the actual demonstration was peaceful and thought-provoking. Some counter-demonstrators showed up and had their say.

And the fine folks of the Reno Police Department were present and gracious, interacting peaceably with demonstrators of a movement that’s often characterized as anti-police. And there was a diversity of opinions expressed by the demonstrators, some of whom held signs, like “Good cops quit,” that could indeed be read as anti-police. Other signs commemorated the lives of people, like Alton Sterling and Eric Garner, who had been killed by law enforcement.

But the majority of signs read quite simply, “Black Lives Matter.” Ω

Greg Allen is just about always in his studio painting.

Stranger than fact Greg Allen Greg Allen is one of the best painters in town. He’s painted portraits of well-known artists (Richard Jackson, Jaxon Northon); an album cover for Richmond Fontaine, the band of Reno-born novelist Willy Vlautin; and loving tributes to long-gone local eateries such as Landrum’s and Deux Gros Nez. He is a longstanding Reno legend.

But you probably haven’t seen him at many parties lately. He spends most of his time in his studio—which is basically an easel, a computer and some neatly arranged shelves of oil paint in the corner of his neatly arranged kitchen—concentrating on meticulous tasks such as painting sagebrush with precision veracity or rendering the glow of Reno neon just right.

Everything about Allen looks retro, from the slicked-back hair to the mailmanstyle shirt with the Pabst Blue Ribbon patch. His fashion sense might suggest that he lives in the speed-fed world of Los Angeles lowbrow, the 1970s art movement whose hot-rod-revving buxom babes still fill the pages of magazines such as Hi-Fructose and Juxtapoz. He does have an affinity for that kind of imagery. He wears it on his sleeve in the form of tattoos wrapped around his arms. But what really holds his attention as a painter is the rich, weird world of non-fiction.

“Nothing is stranger than reality, by far,” said Allen, soft-spoken and thoughtful.

It was a strange occurrence that got him into this job in the first place. At 33, he was playing in a hardcore punk band. A disgruntled 18-year-old neo-Nazi stabbed him with a knife, he said.

“I ended up getting pretty seriously 18

hurt,” he said. “During my recuperation, I decided to teach myself to paint. It’s completely shifted my life. I used to be a very social person.” The requisite reclusiveness didn’t come naturally, but eventually the paintings required too much focus for hosting many visitors. Allen gestured to a café-table-sized canvas, a painting of the Nevada Club, which lit up Reno with 1940s dazzle until it was closed in 1997.

“This has 300 in it,” he said. Three hundred hours, that is, and he still has hundreds of tiny light bulbs yet to paint.

“The kind of work that I really respect is when I look at it and go, ‘How is that even humanly possible?’” Allen said. It’s also the kind of work he paints. He looks deep and longingly into our own back yard, rendering with lavish detail the unsung beauty of rough, rural Nevada and bright, urban facades from decades gone by. He paints a hyper-realistic combination of loneliness and celebration, with a sensibility that’s somehow at once worldly and sheltered. He can paint a sunset over Peavine Mountain without being saccharine or a brokendown mobile home without being ironic or clichéd. He reveres mid-20th-century Nevada, highlighting its grit and glamor as if they were one and the same.

As Allen prepared to mount a rare exhibition at Holland Project, he mentioned that he doesn’t mind impressionist paintings or abstraction, but to him, realism—the colors, textures, tones, tragedies and triumphs that the world is actually made of—hit hardest.

“You can’t tell me there’s a lot of pathos in Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock,” he said. “You can’t tell me there’s a lot about the human condition in splatter art and solid color canvasses. This movie is toast

firecracker McCarthy, as the trailblazer scientist of the group, bumbles her way through her role with a smile but no material. My current favorite Saturday Night Live star, Kate McKinnon, as the brainy yet eccentric science wizard, is allowed to mug like a crack addict on an NYC subway full of inebriated, unarmed billionaires. Leslie Jones, as the street-smart member with no science chops, seems to equate volume with The first Ghostbusters will always be one of the humor. She’s just loud. most magnificent movie miracles.

The BFG

And with this, the startling run of Steven Spielberg duds continues. After delivering two of the dullest movies of his career (Lincoln, Bridge of Spies) Spielberg does the almost impossible; he makes Roald Dahl completely boring. Oscar-winner Mark Rylance delivers a motion-capture CGI performance as the central character, the Big Friendly Giant, that results in more yawns than smiles. His giant captures dreams and blows them into the sleeping residents of London. On one of his excursions, he kidnaps Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), and takes her to the land of giants, where most giants are meat eaters. Luckily, he’s a vegetarian, but he’s being bullied by a group of bad giants led by Jemaine Clement in the film’s most fun motion-capture performance.

Despite a winning performance from Barnhill, a true star in the making, the film drags on and on, trying to get by on big special effects rather than an engaging story. Everything feels a little off for Spielberg. A visit to the Queen’s house, which should be bizarrely funny and subversive, winds up feeling awkward and uncomfortable. The whole movie seems to be playing it safe in Dahl land, as if it is E.T. in Dahl land, and it throws the tone completely off. It doesn’t help that John Williams rips off his own E.T. score. It never clicks. Nothing really works, yet again, for Spielberg, a director who seems to have momentarily lost his mojo.

Central Intelligence

While it doesn’t boast much along the lines of originality, this winds up being an above average action/comedy buddy movie thanks to its stars, Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. The guys belong together. The plot feels like a bunch of parts from other movies cobbled together to make a whole. It has elements of Lethal Weapon, Grosse Pointe Blank, Just Friends and even a little Sixteen Candles, all stitched together, albeit capably, by director Rawson Marshall Thurber (We’re the Millers).

It’s a well-oiled movie Frankenstein. Johnson and Hart are a strong screen duo, with Johnson actually scoring most of the laughs. Hart, who certainly chips in on the laughs front, actually delivers one of the more well rounded, warm performances of his career. He plays Calvin, the most popular guy in high school who grows up to be humdrum. Johnson plays Bob, a former obese guy who Calvin took pity on. Bob grows up to be a rogue CIA agent who looks like the Rock. The two wind up on an adventure that, of course, eventually leads to their high school reunion.

Finding Dory

This sequel to Finding Nemo goes a little darker than its predecessor. Ellen DeGeneres returns as Dory, the lovable fish with short-term memory loss. An event triggers a memory of family in her little brain, and she sets off on a journey to find her mom and dad (voiced by Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy). Pals Marlin (Albert Brooks) and Nemo (Hayden Rolence) join Dory on her quest, which culminates in an aquarium amusement park graced with voice announcements by the actual Sigourney Weaver. Dory winds up in a touch pond, in a bucket of dead fish, and swimming around in a lot of dark pipe work. In some ways, this is to Finding Nemo what The Empire Strikes Back was to Star Wars. It’s a darker, slightly scarier chapter that still delivers on the heartwarming elements and laughs.

Independence Day: Resurgence

I enjoyed the goofy, funny, balls-out alien invasion movie that was Independence Day (1996). The film was dumber than a stoned golden retriever in a Harvard calculus class, but Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and, yes, Randy Quaid made the grandiose stupidity somewhat of a blast. Two decades after the original, Independence Day: Resurgence finally arrives, without Smith, who probably didn’t think the check was big enough. While the original was a stupid blast, the sequel is the equivalent of a nasty two-hour alien fart.

Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Brent Spiner return for alien nonsense that is fast paced yet dull, and utterly void of laughs. It’s evident in the

first 10 minutes that the movie will somehow manage to be lethargic even though the editing is frantic, and lots of things are exploding.

Returning director Roland Emmerich is clearly not on his disaster-epic game. It’s a wasteful effort, where camp has been replaced by total ineptitude, and the performers look lost. And, let’s face it, Liam Hemsworth is no Will Smith.

Swiss Army Man

A bunch of comedians lend their voices to some cartoon characters, and the results are moderately entertaining. Louis C.K. voices Max, a Jack Russell terrier who loves his master, Katie (Ellie Kemper of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), with that undying loyalty that makes dogs so damn cool. Katie brings home a new brother for Max, a big brown shaggy dog named Duke (Eric Stonestreet), and it creates some turmoil in the household. Max and Duke eventually wind up in the hands of Animal Control, and eventually fend for themselves in the sewers of Manhattan. There they become enemies of the Flushed Pets, a group consisting of alligators, lizards, snakes and furry critters led by Snowball the Rabbit (Kevin Hart on a sound booth tear). The advertised premise for the film suggests the movie might be about what our pets do in the house when we leave home. That part of the film is out of the way early in the movie’s opening minutes. The rest of the movie is the band of pets in Max’s neighborhood trying to find him and Duke when they get lost. Some of the sequences are borderline deranged. Max and Duke wind up in a sausage factory, where they gobble down hot dogs in an almost hallucinatory scene set to Grease’s “We Go Together.” This doesn’t feel like the stuff of kids’ movies; it’s a sequence that seems as if the animators took a little LSD break, came back to their computers, and dreamt up some wild shit.

Blake Lively, whose best role until now was the secretary in that SNL “Potato Chip” sketch, is terrific as Nancy, a medical school dropout who goes to a secret beach in Mexico in the wake of her mother’s death. She sets out for a day of surfing and reflection in what she thinks is a completely solitary setting (with the exception of a couple of other friendly surfers). Turns out, there’s a big-assed Great White shark, and this is its territory, and no trespassers are allowed, even if they are as pretty as Blake Lively. As shark movies go, this is a good one, with decent CGI effects, a couple of tense shark attacks, and a constant level of terror that never lets up. The only thing really keeping this from being “very good” rather than “nice and good” is the ending, which made me laugh a laugh I shouldn’t have laughed.

Like the dead corpse at its center, this film is a multipurpose entity. It can be a lot of different things to the viewer. It can be a story about the wild things starvation and desperation can do to the brain, and the strange movies that play in your head when you are losing it. It can be a story about how a deranged stalker deals with the end of his life and afterlife. It can be a story about how funny it would be if somebody’s farts could propel him like a jet ski across the ocean and how funny it would be if his erect dick were a compass. I’ve made my choice what this movie is about, but you could walk away from it thinking something completely different. As Hank, Paul Dano gets yet another careerdefining, nutty role. He’s seemingly stranded on a desert island, at the end of his rope, literally.

Just before killing himself, a corpse (Daniel Radcliffe) washes up on the beach, and starts farting. It starts farting—a lot. Before much time has passed, Hank is riding the corpse, dubbed Manny, across the ocean as its farts provide jet propulsion. Hank, with the arrival of his new friend, decides suicide is a drag, and takes Manny along with him on a trek through the forest to find civilization. Manny eventually starts having conversations with Hank. Sound weird? It is. It’s also strangely beautiful, deeper and richer than most movies with this many farts in it.

Other worlds Schizopolitans “Usually everyone dies in the end, but I think these new songs have a pretty low body count,” said Andy Jorgensen, one of the bassists for Schizopolitans, as he described the group’s newest album.

Jorgensen is one third of Schizopolitans, playing alongside Hector Urtubia on the bass and synths, and The Mighty Xtevion, who handles drums, lead vocals and his infamous “Big Black Stick,” a giant pipe laden with electronic drum triggers.

Schizopolitans was founded in 2004 and has since gone through a series of members.

The current trio has been together for the better part of a decade. In that time, they have endeavored to bring their impulsive creativity from the practice space to their audience.

“We have been trying for a while to capture the spirit of improvisation that we have in the basement and bring it to the stage,” said Jorgensen. “So when we play live, it is different every time.”

The group just released a full-length album, Alone Time, that encapsulates that very spirit. It’s filled to the brim with new music, and it literally happened overnight.

“There are a couple of websites where you make an album for the month of February, said Xtevion. “One night we decided to do it. So we improvised the whole thing, did some overdubs and it was done. We kind of turned on the machine and just went for it. … It was all very organic.”

Alone Time reflects Schizopolitans’ refined ability for impromptu group composition that has been honed through years of playing together.

“Over the years we have learned where the musical spaces are,” said Urtubia. “We have been together so long that we have really learned to be in tune with each other.

Schizopolitans—Andy Jorgensen, Hector Urtubia and Xtevion—will officially release their new album, Alone Time, by canceling their alone time and inviting everyone to The Saint.

Alone Time is the kind of music that makes you think, but that is not as important as how it makes you feel. It is an entire otherworldly experience that is encapsulated in an 11-track album The new songs, in true Schizopolitans form, break down the boundaries of genre labels. In one moment the music infiltrates your bones with a futuristic synth, then compels your attention with a futuristic, deconstructed rock fury. In the next moment, it is art rock with an avant-garde, Nintendo-esque quality.

The simple combination of basses and drums broadens the harmonic landscape that Xtevion can explore vocally. The lyrics are sometimes dramatic, sometimes unintelligible. But the words are less important than the sonic landscape.

“We are very sonically oriented,” said Urtubia. “Of course there are melodies, good melodies. But we are driven by texture.”

The instrumentation blends an acoustic rhythm section with synths to create what the group calls “cinematic, avant-garde pop music.” It makes for a sound with an orchestral grandeur translated in a language of space-age art rock.

“It is like an adventure film, but you do not know who is in it or what is going on,” joked Xtevion.

“They are probably foreign films,” quipped Jorgensen.

For a group whose stage antics have included theatrics, intoxicating visuals and the occasional animal mask, what can audiences expect for the upcoming show?

A little mayhem, a little mystery—and maybe even a little music. Ω

Stray it forward I’m a single guy who started a “friends with benefits” thing two months ago with an unhappily married female co-worker. We’ve since developed feelings for each other and started talking about a future. I’m worried because people always say, “If she cheated with you, she’ll cheat on you.”

OK, sure, have a FWB thing, but with a married coworker? What happened—too overworked to swipe right on Tinder? As for why your co-worker started outsourcing her sex life, there’s an assumption that people cheat because they’re in crappy marriages or relationships. But infidelity researcher Shirley Glass found that even people in happy, loving marriages can end up cheating. They do this for a variety of reasons: more sex, better sex, different sex or sometimes just because “she isn’t bad-looking and there’s an empty office with a big couch two doors down.”

As for whether this woman would cheat on you, that depends on whether she’s the sort of person who cheats. Evolutionary psychologists David Buss and Todd Shackelford found that there are personality traits common to people susceptible to cheating.

One of the strongest predictors is “narcissism”—a personality trait marked by self-importance, selfabsorption, a profound sense of entitlement and a lack of empathy.

Another big predictor is “low conscientiousness,” reflected in unreliability, disorganization, laziness and a lack of self-control. Finally, there’s the unfortunately Norman Batesy-sounding “high psychoticism”—researcher-ese for a mix of aggressiveness, impulsivity and an inability to delay gratification.

Even if this woman checks out personality-wise, you’ll have a much clearer picture of what’s possible after she gets divorced. That is, if she gets divorced.

Regardless, you should take the time to parse who she really is and whether she and her husband are simply two (irreconcilably) different people or whether he just watches a bit too much ESPN when he comes home. If you’re lucky, you’ll find these things out from her, and not in some awkward moment at the end of the workday when you finally get a chance to chat with her husband—through the windshield as you’re clinging to the hood of his moving car.

Tender bender I’m a woman, married for a year to a great guy. The problem is that he’s too gentle when he touches or kisses me, and I’m starting to get really frustrated in bed. I know I should have let him know what I really like a long time ago. How can I do this now without hurting his feelings?

Words, who needs ’em? Maybe you figured he’d get the hint from your body language—maybe because you’re pretty sure you would have if the tables were turned. Well, research by social psychologist Judith A. Hall finds that women are far better at spotting and decoding nonverbal messages (in facial expressions and body language). This makes evolutionary sense, considering a mother’s need to suss out what’s wrong with her 6-month-old.

Still, you don’t have to give him a poor performance evaluation (ouch!) or go into sex ed lecturer-like detail. Instead, take the Gene Hackman approach. Hackman reportedly informs movie directors that the only directions he’ll take are “louder, softer, faster, slower.” (You might want to supplement those with “harder” and “rougher.”)

To encourage greater openness, ask him what his sexual fantasies are (which should lead to the question, “Well, what are yours?”)—and do your best to deliver on any that don’t involve illegal acts with livestock.

You might also watch movies together with sex scenes that are more G.I. Jane than Jane Austen— like the 2005 movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Then, when you’re in bed, suggest “Mr. & Mrs. Smith-style,” and he should get what you mean. Before long, when you tell your friends that sex with your husband is “dreamy,” it won’t be because you usually doze off during it. Ω

We have a couple that are there because a lot of people think that if they buy a wolf-dog and it’s not working out, they can just set it free and it’ll survive out in the wild. It doesn’t work that way.

They’re stuck in the middle! You can’t just set them free. They already know that humans are their resource for food, so they’ll always come back. We don’t deal with wolves in the wild. We just deal with captivity. But we do try to help the wolves in the wild. Yellowstone this past weekend had a Speak for Wolves event.

Bruce on the loose I spent last week in the wilds of Elko county, getting lost on some of the most beautiful desert back roads in this state. Here are highlights.

Middlegate Roadhouse is just east of Fallon on lonely Highway 50.

Lots of people there on a Saturday afternoon. The word is obviously out about them Middlegate burgers. We waited forever to get ours, which gave me time to go out into their swingin’ yard and shoot some baskets. I Stef out and splashed four straight free throws. Finally, the burger. Still quite good!

Big Creek in the Toiyabes. Tremendous desert mountain scenery, with its own special and very vertical character. The creek, positively gushing with water. Summertime and primetime.

East to Elko, via Highway 278, the state highway that connects Eureka to Carlin. This road turns out to be a pleasant scenic surprise, filled with large gorgeous

pastures of creek-fed fescues and wild native grasses. Vital. Healthy.

Picturesque.

They say Lamoille Canyon is Yosemite without the people. And you know what? That’s a great call. If you like majestic awesomeness, put glacial Lamoille Canyon, 25 miles south of Elko, on your list. Yosemite comparisons are totally apt.

Thomas Canyon Campground on Lamoille Creek is dynamite. If you’re camping, a spot at this spot is a no brainer. And just down the road from this place is the Pine Lodge, the well established and super yummy steakhouse/seafood restaurant in “downtown” Lamoille. Yes, eat here. As often as you can. If they eat meat in heaven, they might well serve this filet.

The drive to incredibly remote and delightfully exotic Jarbidge (Watch it! Only ’Fornians and lameasses call it Jar-bridge! Ain’t no second R in the name!) over ut-

terly amazing Coon Creek Summit and eyeball-boggling Bear Creek Summit is one of the greatest visual experiences you will ever enjoy on this planet. It’s Nevada at its ultimate and most stunningly beautiful. You’ll never forget your afternoon on this road.

Jarbidge, the village of trilling hummingbirds dashing and streaking about (so many feeders!) was in perfect form. The always enjoyable Outdoor Inn in downtown J-town was firing on all cylinders. The food was great.

The bar was excellent. The ambiance superb. How superb? They had a stuffed phukar in there, pronounced “fucker,” a mutant game bird of a pheasant head sewed on to a chukar body. This phukar had one foot upraised, with the middle talon of that upraised foot also upraised, delivering his unmistakable message to humanity. It was about as perfect as shit gets. Ω
